<p>After nearly four decades of stubbornly clinging to life, one of the largest icebergs ever recorded is entering its final act. A23a - the trillion-ton "megaberg," which once sprawled over an area more than twice the size of Greater London - has drifted into the warmer waters of the South Atlantic and has begun to disintegrate rapidly.</p>



<p>In recent weeks, satellite images show vast slabs calving away - some measuring hundreds of square miles - while a blizzard of smaller bergy bits spreads around it, posing hazards to ships as the giant wastes away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iceberg-freed-after-30-years">Iceberg freed after 30 years</h2>



<p>A23a’s story stretches back to 1986, when it calved from Antarctica’s Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and promptly ran aground in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-is-sea-ice-loss-affecting-biodiversity-in-the-weddell-sea/">Weddell Sea</a>, pinned to the seafloor for more than 30 years.</p>



<p>Freed at last in 2020, it joined “iceberg alley,” the conveyor belt of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-circumpolar-current-speed-increasing-rising-sea-levels/">Antarctic Circumpolar Current</a> that sweeps big bergs toward the South Atlantic.</p>



<p>By early 2025, it had loomed into view near South Georgia, raising fears it could block the island’s penguins and seals from their feeding grounds. The berg briefly grounded on shallow banks, then worked loose in late May and accelerated north.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-seas-speed-its-demise">Warming seas speed its demise</h2>



<p>Heat and waves are now doing what gravity and time could not. According to an analysis of Copernicus satellite data, megaberg A23a is down to roughly 683 square miles, with a maximum width of about 37 miles - less than half its size at the start of the year. </p>



<p>Its drift speed has jumped too, at times topping 12 miles per day as it rides stronger currents and increasingly rough seas.</p>



<p>“It’s breaking up fairly dramatically,” said Andrew Meijers, a physical oceanographer at the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Antarctic Survey</a> (BAS). “I’d say it’s very much on its way out - it’s basically rotting underneath." </p>



<p>"The water is way too warm for it to maintain. It’s constantly melting…It won’t be really identifiable within a few weeks.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-made-megaberg-a23a-so-unusual">What made megaberg A23a so unusual</h2>



<p>Iceberg calving is part of the normal life cycle of polar ice, and giant bergs are not unprecedented. But A23a’s persistence and path are striking.</p>



<p>“Most icebergs don’t make it this far,” Meijers said. “This one’s really big, so it has lasted longer and traveled farther than others.”</p>



<p>When BAS researchers sailed alongside it in late 2023 aboard the RRS <em>Sir David Attenborough</em>, the experience was otherworldly.</p>



<p>“It looked like a towering wall emerging from the ocean, stretching from horizon to horizon,” Meijers said. “Some portions were quite pitted and undercut by the action of waves and melt.”</p>



<p>That undercutting is the giveaway. As the berg moves into warmer, saltier water and meets heavier swell, melting hollows its base while cracks propagate through the plate-like ice. Running aground - whether at South Georgia or now on patches of the continental shelf - adds extra stress that hastens the breakup.</p>



<p>“Large bergs have made it a long way north before - one got within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of Perth, Australia -  but they all inevitably break up and melt quickly afterward,” Meijers said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-danger-and-opportunity-collide">Danger and opportunity collide</h2>



<p>Icebergs of this size can reshape local ecosystems as they pass. They can temporarily block straightforward routes from island rookeries to offshore feeding grounds, forcing adult <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/penguins-are-threatened-by-mercury-contamination/">penguins</a> and seals to detour and burn energy while chicks and pups wait ashore.</p>



<p>“Potentially, it could interrupt their pathway to feeding sites and force the adults to expend more energy to travel around it,” Meijers said of the South Georgia colonies, which is why the grounding in March drew concern. The berg’s drift around the island reduced that immediate risk.</p>



<p>There may also be benefits. As megabergs like A23a melt, they stir stratified waters and leak micronutrients such as iron into the sunlit surface layer - fertilizer for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-from-africa-sparked-a-massive-phytoplankton-bloom/">phytoplankton blooms</a> that can feed krill and fish, and ultimately seabirds and mammals.</p>



<p>BAS researchers sampled waters around A23a in December 2023 to gauge its biogeochemical “footprint.” They paired these results with past deployments of robotic ocean gliders around similar bergs. </p>



<p>Together, the data show how iceberg-borne nutrients and upwelling can boost productivity and even enhance carbon sequestration as organic matter sinks to depth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iceberg-s-collapse-tracked-by-satellites">Iceberg's collapse tracked by satellites</h2>



<p>A23a’s decay has unfolded in near-real time thanks to daily satellite imagery, which captures both its changing outline and the swarms of fragments it sheds.</p>



<p>“It is easily observed from space, and daily visual-spectrum satellite snapshots make it easy to track its progress,” Meijers said. </p>



<p>Ocean current maps - also derived from satellites - help project its likely path, though the precise route always depends on winds, waves, and where the berg next snags the seafloor.</p>



<p>For shipping, vigilance is everything. A single monster is easy to avoid; a broken field of smaller floes is not. “As it breaks up over time, the smaller bergs are much harder to track,” Meijers said. Fishing operators may temporarily write off entire regions until the ice debris disperses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-icebergs-in-a-warming-world">Icebergs in a warming world</h2>



<p>Scientists are careful to distinguish between calving - a natural release valve for ice shelves - and the broader, climate-driven changes transforming Antarctica.</p>



<p>“Icebergs, including megabergs like this one, are a completely normal part of the lifecycle of the Antarctic (and Greenland) ice sheets,” Meijers said. But the context has shifted.</p>



<p>“Observations show that the ice shelves have lost around 6,000 giga (billion) tons of their mass since the year 2000.” </p>



<p>It is a loss “roughly matched by an increase in straight-up melt of the ice shelves” and aligned with measured mass loss from grounded Antarctic ice.</p>



<p>That matters for global sea level - because thinning shelves buttress <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-are-reshaping-landscapes-and-national-borders-around-the-world/">glaciers</a> less effectively - and for ocean circulation, as freshwater input alters density and flow. Scientists are especially concerned about potential “tipping points” in West Antarctica, where retreat could become self-sustaining.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-final-days-of-a-giant">Final days of a giant</h2>



<p>No one can say exactly how A23a’s last weeks will play out, only that the megaberg's direction is one-way. Grounding events, wave attacks, and heat from above and below guarantee a cascade of fractures until the berg is a memory and a field of bergy bits.</p>



<p>“Now it’s grounded, it is even more likely to break up due to the increased stresses,” Meijers noted earlier; whether or not it’s currently snagged, the outcome is the same.</p>



<p>For scientists, though, this isn’t just spectacle. It’s a chance to watch, measure, and model how a true giant interacts with the Southern Ocean - how it fertilizes, how it freshens, how it fragments - and to fold those insights into a bigger picture of a warming world.</p>



<p>As Meijers put it, icebergs provide interesting natural laboratories for studying ocean physics, chemistry, and ecosystems. A23a’s long journey is nearly over. The lessons it leaves behind won’t melt away.</p>

<p>Do you ever wonder how your pet understands what you're going through? An intriguing study conducted in Budapest has given us some answers about how animals like dogs and pigs respond to human sounds.</p>



<p>This research, led by Fanni Lehoczki and Paula Pérez Fraga from the Neuroethology of Communication Lab at <a href="https://ethology.elte.hu/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ELTE Department of Ethology</a>, reveals how animals react to our emotional vocalizations, offering fascinating insights into the depth of interspecies empathy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-empathy-of-dogs-and-pigs-towards-humans">Empathy of dogs and pigs towards humans</h2>



<p>Researchers carried out this study on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-dog-day-celebrating-all-the-ways-that-dogs-make-life-better/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">companion dogs</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-pig-day-honoring-the-role-of-an-underappreciated-animal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">miniature pigs</a>, two popular pets found in homes around the world. </p>



<p>They focused on how these animals would respond to different types of human vocalizations, specifically human humming and crying.</p>



<p>Now, you might wonder, why these two sounds? Well, our tears, more often than not, signify distress and sadness. </p>



<p>On the other hand, humming doesn't usually signal any particular emotion but is relatively unusual.</p>



<p>According to the research, dogs and pigs were able to distinguish between these two human sounds. However, their reactions were noticeably different.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogs-reflect-human-feelings">Dogs reflect human feelings</h2>



<p>If you've ever felt like your dog can sense your sadness, you just might be right. The study found that dogs <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-can-imitate-human-actions-from-2d-videos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mirrored their emotional state</a> to the one they perceived in the human vocalization they heard. </p>



<p>For instance, upon hearing crying, our canine friends demonstrated behaviors indicative of a high-arousal and negative state, reinforcing the idea that pets can pick up on our feelings.</p>



<p>This phenomenon, known as 'emotional contagion', affirms the deep emotional bond between humans and dogs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pigs-react-to-unusual-human-sounds">Pigs react to unusual human sounds</h2>



<p>On the other side of the coin, our piggy pals reacted more to the unusual sound of humming. Pigs, unlike dogs, exhibited behaviors showing stress in response to the humming sound.</p>



<p>It seems the unfamiliar noise caught the pigs' attention more, suggesting they might find such uncommon sounds stressful or confusing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-domestication-and-emotional-contagion">Domestication and emotional contagion</h2>



<p>These findings bowled over researchers by suggesting domestication processes might influence animals' responses to human emotions -- with dogs, for instance, being bred for their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-explores-the-mystery-of-why-dogs-wag-their-tails/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dependency on humans</a>. </p>



<p>This, in turn, might have led to dogs being more sensitive to our emotional states.</p>



<p>"While we cannot exclude that pigs also experienced emotional contagion when listening to human crying, one explanation for their reaction might be that humming is highly unusual, and surprising sounds stress out pigs more than human sadness," Paula Pérez Fraga stresses.</p>



<p>The study hints that understanding certain human sounds may be more challenging for some domestic animals. However, additional research involving physiological measurements is required to confirm these findings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-emotions">Evolution of emotions</h2>



<p>The study delves deeper into the evolutionary pathways that have led to the emotional sensitivity observed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-foxes-can-be-domesticated-thanks-to-breeding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">domesticated animals</a>.</p>



<p>Historically, the process of domestication in dogs and pigs has selected for traits beneficial to humans, including the capacity to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-learn-better-with-praise-and-petting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">connect emotionally</a>. </p>



<p>Dogs, being one of the first domesticated animals, have had a long socio-evolutionary history of coexisting with humans.</p>



<p>This prolonged association could have naturally selected for emotional attunement in dogs, enabling them to respond empathetically to human cues. </p>



<p>Thus, their ability to mirror human emotions may be an evolved trait fostering better human-animal relationships.</p>



<p>Pigs, on the other hand, have had a relatively shorter domestication timeline, primarily driven by agricultural purposes rather than companionship. </p>



<p>This difference in domestication trajectories might explain the varied <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-provide-insight-into-human-cognition-and-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">responses</a> to human emotional vocalizations observed in the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-interaction-between-humans-dogs-and-pigs">Implications for interaction between humans, dogs and pigs</h2>

<p>For pig owners, especially those engaging in farming or therapy animal roles, acknowledging their propensity to stress from unusual sounds can enhance animal welfare practices. </p>



<p>Overall, this study underscores the importance of emotional intelligence in fostering healthy human-animal bonds, potentially paving the way for more nuanced and supportive approaches to pet care and domestication.</p>

<p>NASA is all geared up to launch a unique telescope that could possibly uncover inhabited planets by 2050. They have named it Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), and it will primarily focus on detecting a 'wide variety of biosignatures' emitted by living organisms.</p>



<p>Introducing Dr. Jessie Christiansen, the esteemed chief scientist for <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, who is dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. </p>



<p>She firmly believes that HWO will find 'a signal in the atmosphere of a planet in the habitable zone of a star like our sun within our lifetime.</p>



<p>Dr. Christiansen's work is at the forefront of astronomical research, exploring the potential for life beyond our planet. Her optimism and expertise inspire the scientific community and the public alike.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-inhabited-planets-with-hwo">Search for inhabited planets with HWO</h2>



<p>NASA's team has identified 25 Earth-like planets around sun-like stars. These are potential candidates for further exploration. </p>



<p>These planets could have conditions <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-85-new-exoplanets-that-could-harbor-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suitable for life</a>. Hence, the discovery is particularly significant for the search for extraterrestrial life.</p>



<p>Noteworthy strides are also being taken to construct <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/programs/habitable-worlds-observatory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Habitable World Observatory</a>'s next-generation hardware and code. </p>



<p>With a whopping three NASA contracts totaling $17.5 million, the aim is to enrich the detail of nearby exoplanet data.</p>



<p>This funding will facilitate the development of advanced technologies, enhancing the precision and scope of our observations, and ultimately bringing us closer to understanding the universe and our place within it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hwo-s-construction-and-features">HWO's construction and features</h2>



<p>Super Hubble is the name the experts are using to refer to HWO. It embodies the features to directly image <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-sized-exoplanet-orbiting-ultracool-dwarf-star-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth-size</a> planets revolving around other stars. </p>



<p>This will be coupled with ultra-precise optics to scrutinize the atmospheres of these worlds for signs of life.</p>



<p>Berkeley astronomer, and co-leader of HWO's Science Architecture Review Team (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/programs/habitable-worlds-observatory/start-tag/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">START</a>), Dr. Courtney Dressing, proposed equipping HWO with the capacity to detect a 'wide variety of biosignatures.' </p>



<p>These include 'biogenic' gases, aerosols, and other airborne pollutants; 'surface biosignatures,' like the infra-red heat produced by vegetation, and even more artificial 'technosignatures' that would be made by a civilized alien race. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead-to-inhabited-planets">Looking ahead to inhabited planets</h2>



<p>Despite discovering over 5,000 new exoplanets and cataloging a few dozen earth-like candidates, Dr. Christiansen admits that major progress is yet to be made.</p>



<p>"We still haven't found a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-exoplanet-gliese-12-b-only-40-light-years-away-earth-like-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet like the Earth</a>, a rocky planet in the habitable zone of a star like the sun," she says.</p>



<p>However, she maintains faith in the potential of HWO to find proof of extraterrestrial life and inhabited planets not too long after it's launched in 2040. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behind-the-scenes-at-hwo">Behind the scenes at HWO</h2>



<p>To construct this marvel, military contractors Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and Ball Aerospace will begin their contributions to HWO this summer. </p>



<p>Isn't it astonishing that this year's spend alone is $17.5 million, and it is anticipated that the US government may devote up to $11 billion to the HWO telescope project?</p>



<p>Let's also take a moment to pay tribute to the <a href="https://hubblesite.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble</a> Space Telescope. Named after Edwin Hubble, it has made over 1.5 million observations since its mission began in 1990. These observations have helped publish around 18,000 scientific papers.</p>



<p>The HWO aims to build on its predecessor's achievements and extend our grasp of the universe even further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hwo-and-implications-for-humanity">HWO and implications for humanity</h2>



<p>The HWO's discoveries extend beyond scientific curiosity. They could deeply impact humanity's understanding of its place in the universe. </p>



<p>Detecting biosignatures or technosignatures on other planets could confirm we are not alone. This might transform our philosophical, ethical, and theological perspectives.</p>



<p>Such a paradigm shift could spur interest in space exploration and foster international collaboration in addressing the universal quest for knowledge. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the technologies developed for HWO are likely to spur innovations in other fields, including environmental monitoring and medical imaging, illustrating the wide-ranging benefits of investment in astronomical research. </p>



<p>Therefore, while the primary goal of HWO is to find extraterrestrial inhabited planets, its broader impact could touch many aspects of human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sulfur-dioxide-found-on-distant-exoplanet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life</a>.</p>

NASA's new telescope aims to find inhabited planets by 2050

<p>New research has revealed how the unique internal anatomy of the helmeted hornbill’s casque helps it withstand damage during aerial jousting battles. This understanding may aid in conserving this critically endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/observing-birds-in-nature-can-help-protect-them-in-captivity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> and developing impact-resistant materials.</p>



<p>“When I started in Hong Kong, I visited <a href="https://www.cityu.edu.hk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">City University of Hong Kong</a> (CityU)’s conservation forensics group to chat about their research and they introduced me to this amazing bird, to its bizarre cranial anatomy, and to the threats posed to the species by the illegal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-sunscreens-lose-effectiveness-and-become-harmful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife trade</a>,” said Mason Dean, an associate professor of comparative anatomy at CityU.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unique-headgear-of-the-helmeted-hornbill">The unique headgear of the helmeted hornbill</h2>



<p>The helmeted hornbill is targeted in the illegal wildlife trade for its distinctive casque. While casques are common among hornbills, their function varies by species. In the helmeted hornbill, the casque has a thick keratin layer and a dense network of bone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As I learned more about this species, I discovered a cross-section of a dried skull in a museum, revealing a shocking trainwreck of trabeculae in the casque,” Dean said. “When I heard that individuals are known to ram their casques together in mid-air displays, I just had to know more about the functional morphology.”</p>



<p>Trabeculae are inter-connected struts inside bones that provide strength and resistance to buckling. “Understanding hornbill anatomy and how it allows for this jousting behavior can therefore give us clues about this elusive animal’s ecology and fundamental aspects of its life history and health,” Dean explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skull-support-during-high-impact-collisions-nbsp">Skull support during high-impact collisions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study revealed that the casque’s dense trabeculae support the structure during high-impact collisions. The team used microCT to analyze the casque’s internal structure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We have been focused on understanding the hierarchical architectures of the skull, uniting biology, materials science, and engineering techniques,” Dean said.</p>



<p>“We’ve been able to get a detailed and quantitative picture of how the casque is constructed, how the bone interacts with the keratin, and the intricate latticework of bone trabeculae supporting the skull’s impact surface.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-anatomy-of-the-helmeted-hornbill">Surprising anatomy of the helmeted hornbill</h2>



<p>The team found that the hornbill’s trabeculae were as thick as those in an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-elephant-day-understanding-celebrating-and-protecting-earths-gentle-giants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephant</a>’s femur, despite the hornbill being much smaller. </p>



<p>“I’ve used microCT to look at a big diversity of animal skeletons, but I have never seen bony trabeculae like the ones we’ve found in the hornbill,” Dean added.</p>



<p>The findings also show that the casque’s trabeculae channel back to the braincase, providing additional reinforcement.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-increased-awareness-nbsp">Need for increased awareness<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Illegal wildlife trade has driven the helmeted hornbill to become critically endangered.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The helmeted hornbill is one of the largest hornbill species in Asia, with the keratin fronting its casque historically a target for the art and antique market for carving into ornamental wildlife products,” Dean explained. “A large number of our skull specimens still contained the bullets that had likely killed the animal.”</p>



<p>“Since the species is elusive and hard to observe in the wild, there is a great need to improve knowledge of its biology, to preserve its habitat, protect dwindling wild populations, and to develop better tools to ID wildlife products.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We hope projects like ours contribute to an understanding of species’ natural history and raise public awareness of the challenges facing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> loss, while also ideally showing scientists that steps toward conservation need not solely come from conservation biologists!,” he concluded.</p>

<p>A team of international researchers has recently identified the unique nanostructures responsible for the electric blue spots on the bluespotted ribbontail <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-rays-were-more-diverse-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ray</a> (<em>Taeniura lymma</em>), which could inspire chemical-free color production. </p>



<p>Additionally, they are also investigating the blue coloration of the blue shark (<em>Prionace glauca</em>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-colors-of-the-ribbontail-ray">Mysterious colors of the ribbontail ray</h2>



<p>Skin <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-animals-got-their-complex-color-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coloration</a> is crucial for communication in organisms, offering visual cues for warning, attraction, or camouflage. While the bluespotted ribbontail ray is known for its vivid blue spots, the biological processes behind these spots were previously unknown.</p>



<p>“Understanding animal structural color is not just about optical physics but also the materials involved, how they’re finely organized in the tissue, and how the color looks in the animal’s environment,” said senior author Mason Dean, an associate professor of comparative anatomy at the <a href="https://www.cityu.edu.hk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">City University of Hong Kong</a> (CityU).</p>



<p>“To draw all those pieces together, we assembled a great team of disciplines from multiple countries, ending up with a surprising and fun solution to the stingray color puzzle.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extremely-rare-blue-coloration-nbsp">Extremely rare blue coloration<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Dean noted that if you see blue in nature, you can almost be sure that it’s made by tissue nanostructures, not pigment. These structural colors are created by nanoscale structures that manipulate light.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Blue colors are especially interesting because blue pigments are extremely rare, and nature often uses nanoscale structures to make blue,” said Viktoriia Kamska, a postdoc studying natural coloration mechanisms at CityU.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fine-scale-architecture-of-the-skin-nbsp">Fine-scale architecture of the skin<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The scientists utilized various techniques to analyze skin architecture under natural conditions. “To understand the fine-scale architecture of the skin, we used microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM),” Dean said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analyses revealed that the blue color arises from unique skin cells with a stable 3D arrangement of nanoscale spheres containing reflecting nanocrystals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Because the size of the nanostructures and their spacing are a useful multiple of the wavelength of blue light, they tend to reflect blue wavelengths specifically,” said Amar Surapaneni, a postdoc in Dean’s group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bright-blue-skin-of-the-ribbontail-ray-nbsp">Bright blue skin of the ribbontail ray<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The “quasi-ordered” arrangement of these spheres ensures the color remains unchanged when viewed from different angles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“To clean up any extraneous colors, a thick layer of melanin underneath the color-producing cells absorbs all other colors, resulting in extremely bright blue skin. In the end, the two cell types are a great collaboration: the structural color cells hone in on the blue color, while the melanin pigment cells suppress other wavelengths, resulting in extremely bright blue skin,” Dean explained.</p>



<p>This coloration likely offers <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-pandas-have-the-perfect-camouflage-for-their-natural-habitat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">camouflage</a> benefits. “In water, blue penetrates deeper than any other color, helping animals blend with their surroundings. Bright blue skin spots of stingrays do not change with viewing angle; therefore, they might have specific advantages in camouflage as the animal is swimming or quickly maneuvering with undulating wings,” he added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>The researchers are exploring applications for bio-inspired, pigment-less colored materials.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We are pursuing collaborations with fellow researchers to develop flexible biomimetic structurally-coloured systems inspired by the soft nature of stingray skin for safe, chemical-free colors in textiles, flexible displays, screens, and sensors,” Dean reported.</p>



<p>The experts are also investigating blue coloration in other rays and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sharks-important-deserve-protections/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sharks</a>, including the blue shark. “Despite the name 'blue shark' and its ecological aspects being well studied, no one still knows how the blue color is produced on its skin,” Kamska said. </p>



<p>“Preliminary results demonstrate that this coloration mechanism is different from the stingray's - but just like the stingray, we need to try different combinations of fine imaging tools and address multiple related disciplines in optics, material, and biological science,” she concluded.</p>

<p>Many scientists believe that in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hairless-mammals-evolved-at-a-faster-pace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a>, there's a tradeoff between growth and lifespan. Pugs, for example, are known to live longer than their larger counterpart in the dog world, the Great Dane. </p>



<p>But a new study conducted by Chen Hou, an associate professor of biological sciences at the <a href="https://www.mst.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Missouri University of Science and Technology</a>, shows that when more energy is allocated to the creation of better cellular materials, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-explain-longevity-in-mammals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">longevity</a> is enhanced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energetic-cost-of-biosynthesis-nbsp">Energetic cost of biosynthesis<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Hou argued that his “take-home message” from this research is that if you allocate more energy to making improved cellular materials, you will live longer - a concept that he says engineers may be more familiar with than biologists.</p>



<p>“The existing life history theories suggested a tradeoff between growth and somatic maintenance, meaning more energy spent on growth would result in less for maintaining health,” Hou explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But this study reveals that the energy cost for biosynthesis is a hidden physiological mechanism underlying the well-established negative correlation between growth and lifespan in mammalian species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-growth-and-lifespan">Linking growth and lifespan</h2>



<p>Hou's study uses a new research model based on energy conservation to explain the physiological effect of the variation in the energetic cost on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aging-may-be-driven-by-genetic-imbalances/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> process. It also illustrates its role in linking growth and lifespan.</p>



<p>“Previously, the energetic cost of biosynthesis has been thought to be a constant across species and therefore was not considered a contributor to the variation in any life history traits, such as growth and lifespan,” Hou said.</p>



<p>“This study employs a recently proposed model based on energy conservation to explain the physiological effect of the variation in this energetic cost on the aging process and illustrates its role in linking growth and lifespan.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-negative-correlation-between-growth-and-lifespan">Negative correlation between growth and lifespan</h2>



<p>The study shows that after controlling two energy components - mass-specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolic rate</a> and the energetic cost of biosynthesis - there is still a negative correlation between growth constant and lifespan, revealing that the energetic cost of biosynthesis is a link between growth and longevity in mammals.</p>



<p>According to Hou, since the energy cost of biosynthesis links growth to aging processes, allocating more energy to growth may enhance somatic maintenance.</p>



<p>Thus, the conventional understanding of the tradeoff between growth and maintenance needs to be more carefully analyzed, and the potential combined effect of metabolic rate and energetic cost of biosynthesis should be considered in similar studies of aging.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-creates-an-unclear-future-for-u-s-forests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate change</a> is likely to push tree species toward the colder and wetter parts of their geographical distribution, according to new research led by the <a href="https://www.uah.es/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alcalá</a> (UAH) in Spain. </p>



<p>The study, published in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2314899121" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em></a> (PNAS), provides the first quantitative evidence that climate change is causing this shift in tree density across <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boreal-and-temperate-forests-have-emerged-as-the-main-carbon-sinks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperate forests</a> on a continental scale.</p>



<p>“Although climate change is expected to drive tree species toward colder and wetter regions of their distribution, broadscale empirical evidence is lacking,” noted the study authors. “One possibility is that past and present human activities in forests obscure or alter the effects of climate.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-most-tree-species-can-acclimate">Most tree species can acclimate</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed data from over two million trees, representing 73 species widely distributed across Europe and the United States.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They explored whether changes in tree density could be attributed to specific characteristics of each species, such as tolerance to arid conditions or dispersal capacity. However, the study did not identify any single trait as decisive for these changes.</p>



<p>“This lack of a definitive trait suggests that most species possess a degree of acclimation capability,” said lead author Julen Astigarraga, a postdoctoral fellow at UAH.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tree-species-used-for-ecosystem-restoration-nbsp">Tree species used for ecosystem restoration&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Understanding how forest species respond to climate change by increasing their density in more northerly regions is crucial for planning ecosystem <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a>, management, and restoration. </p>



<p>“Some tree species which are currently used for ecosystem restoration in Europe may no longer be suitable in these regions in the near future,” said co-author Thomas Pugh, a climate scientist at the University of Birmingham and Lund University.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In addition, massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reforestation-cannot-offset-carbon-emissions-from-harvesting-wood/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reforestation</a> programs planned as a solution for capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere might be limited in their effectiveness if they do not account for these responses.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-international-collaboration-nbsp">International collaboration&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study represented a significant international collaboration, involving scientists from 12 countries and data analysis from more than 125,000 forest plots across Europe and North America.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This study required a significant international effort to pull together and harmonize data from many different sources. The data from these forest inventories is crucial for advancing our understanding of forest dynamics and their resilience to climate change,” explained co-author Adriane Esquivel Muelbert, an expert in forest ecology at Birmingham.</p>



<p>These findings underscore the importance of considering climate-driven changes in tree species distribution when developing strategies for ecosystem restoration and reforestation.</p>

<p>In the fascinating world of ornithology, a groundbreaking study reveals that blue and great tits are capable of utilizing impressive episodic-like memory for their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coffee-plantations-limit-native-birds-diets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food foraging</a> activities. This trait was once thought to be exclusive to humans.</p>



<p>Often seen darting around gardens in search of delicious treats hidden in shrubs and trees, these small songbirds remember not only their dietary past but the location of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-birds-enjoy-eating-feces-and-what-it-means-for-their-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food source</a> and the time they discovered it. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-cognition-in-natural-environments">Animal cognition in natural environments</h2>



<p>The novelty of this research is that it's one of the very first to involve wild animals in such an experiment, opening an intriguing avenue into understanding more about animal cognition in natural environments.</p>



<p>This discovery was made by researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> and the University of East Anglia. </p>



<p>Initially, it was widely believed that episodic memory, which involves recalling personally experienced events, was a trait unique to humans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, this research provides compelling evidence to the contrary, suggesting that many non-human animals also possess such episodic-like memory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-intelligence-research">Animal intelligence research</h2>



<p>Implementing advanced tracking technologies and specially commissioned software, the research team facilitated the participation of 94 wild, free-living blue and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-tits-often-lose-their-vivid-colors-in-the-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">great tits</a> in a series of memory tasks. </p>



<p>The tasks were centered around automated food containers and included testing unique, timed events specific to each bird.</p>



<p>Why focus specifically on blue tits and great tits? Well, these birds are opportunistic foragers with diverse <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-birds-learn-what-to-avoid-eating-by-watching-others/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dietary preferences</a>, making them perfect candidates to investigate the benefit of recalling ecological details from singular experiences aiding flexible decision-making.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pushing-the-boundary-of-songbird-memory">Pushing the boundary of songbird memory</h2>



<p>According to James Davies, the study's first author from the University of Cambridge’s Comparative Cognition Lab, these results are a breakthrough.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Our findings provide the first evidence for episodic-like memory in the wild and show that blue and great tits have a more flexible memory system than we used to assume. These birds are more intelligent than they've been given credit for."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-songbird-memory-in-action-nbsp">Songbird memory in action<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>For the memory tests, the researchers employed an existing study design, which had been developed by Nicola Clayton and Anthony Dickinson. They adapted it to a realistic foraging scenario with two food items - sunflower seeds and peanut pieces.</p>



<p>The intricate rules of the “temporal feeder” experiment allowed the birds to show their capacity for recalling details from their experiences. By applying this knowledge to new situations, the researchers could observe episodic-like memory in action.</p>



<p>Dr. Gabrielle Davidson from the University of East Anglia, the senior author of the study, marveled at the birds' natural behavior and their ability to perform well in the memory tasks within their familiar environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The birds were behaving naturally in a familiar environment, so we captured something more realistic than if the birds had been captive. It was remarkable to see these birds performed well in our memory tasks while also experiencing a bunch of other memories out in the wild,” said Dr. Davidson.</p>



<p>“For us, field research is challenging because the birds are completely free not to take part in our experiments and just fly away, but we’ve shown this type of intelligence test in the wild works.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-memory-in-songbirds">Evolution of memory in songbirds</h2>



<p>The implications of this discovery extend beyond just proving the existence of episodic-like memory in non-human animals. The experts also suggest that this flexible memory could aid in adapting to environmental stress and fluctuations related to climate change.</p>



<p>This research poses fascinating questions about the reciprocal relationship between humans and these birds, and the potential impact of human behavior on the evolution of their memory traits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is possible that these birds are picking up on and remembering our routines in terms of when we top up bird feeders. This needs further study,” said Dr. Davidson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead-future-research">Looking ahead: Future research</h2>



<p>The exciting results of this study in the wild has not only broken ground in our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seagulls-birds-more-intelligent-than-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird intelligence</a> but paves the way for further research. Professor Nicola Clayton is eager to explore whether birds with more prominent episodic-like memory traits experience enhanced reproductive success.</p>



<p>Significant progress has undoubtedly been made since the late 1990s when Professor Clayton first started her research in this field. Understanding the “what, where, and when” of unique past events is not a uniquely human trait, as once assumed.</p>



<p>“This type of memory would allow them to flexibly react to new conditions and combine this information with their original memory to make decisions,” said Davies. “So whether they're thinking about fruit ripening or caterpillars emerging, that's a powerful ability to have when things get tough."</p>

<p>“Adequate nutrient or mineral stores in the body prior to conception can ensure optimal nutrient status for conception and support the early stages of fetal growth and development.”</p>



<p>The research was conducted separately for calcium and zinc using data from over 7,700 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-may-speed-up-aging-in-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnant women</a> across the U.S who shared their health and dietary information through the <a href="https://www.nichd.nih.gov/research/supported/nuMoM2b" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zinc-calcium-and-healthy-pregnancy">Zinc, calcium, and healthy pregnancy</h2>



<p>Individuals with higher pre-conception calcium intake were 24% less likely to suffer from hypertensive disorders during pregnancy compared to those with the lowest calcium intake. </p>



<p>The same trend was observed with zinc, where the highest pre-conception zinc intakes resulted in a whopping 38% less likelihood to experience hypertensive disorders during pregnancy as opposed to those with minimal zinc intake.</p>



<p>While these observational studies do not essentially prove causation, the results align with related studies linking higher intakes of these minerals to a decreased risk of hypertension-related illnesses outside of pregnancy.</p>



<p>Calcium and zinc are known to play important roles in metabolic processes related to maintaining the health of blood vessels. </p>



<p>This offers a plausible biological explanation for the hypothesis that these minerals could help prevent blood pressure disorders.</p>



<p>The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommend that women of childbearing age should consume 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 8 milligrams of zinc daily. </p>

<p>Harnessing this power isn't straightforward as it may sound. Bacteria's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crispr-gene-editing-gets-a-revolutionary-upgrade-with-new-tool/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">genetic makeup</a> holds the key to tapping into their potential. </p>



<p>However, the problems arise when scientists try to introduce foreign DNA into them, a process known as DNA transformation, which till now has been a bit of a hard nut to crack.</p>



<p>The prime culprit standing between scientists and successful DNA transformation is restriction-modification systems. </p>



<p>Acting as the bacteria’s security system, these mark the bacterial genome with a unique pattern and destroy incoming foreign DNA that doesn't match this pattern. Think of it as a locked door where only the right key (pattern) can let you in.</p>



<p>To bypass this system, scientists have to painstakingly add the bacterial pattern to the foreign DNA. This process requires the use of enzymes called DNA methyltransferases that attach small chemical groups to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-building-block-of-life-called-tna-created-in-the-lab/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA bases</a>. </p>



<p>Unfortunately, current methods to accomplish this are laborious, not easily scalable, and about as convenient as a square wheel. Clearly, we needed a fresh approach.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-imprint">Meet IMPRINT</h2>



<p>Enter a team led by the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (<a href="https://www.helmholtz-hiri.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HIRI</a>), in collaboration with Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (<a href="https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JMU</a>) and researchers from North Carolina State University (<a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCSU</a>). </p>



<p>They've proposed a novel way to reproduce these patterns and enhance DNA transformation, aptly named IMPRINT (Imitating Methylation Patterns Rapidly IN TXTL).</p>



<p>IMPRINT uses a cell-free transcription-translation (TXTL) system -- a liquid mix that can produce RNA and proteins from added DNA. </p>



<p>The unique point here is to express a bacterium’s specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epigenetic-dna-clocks-predict-biological-age-more-accurately/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA methyltransferases</a>, which are then used to modify the foreign DNA before its delivery into the target bacterium.</p>



<p>According to Chase Beisel, head of the RNA Synthetic Biology department at the HIRI and professor at the JMU Medical Faculty, IMPRINT represents a groundbreaking use of TXTL. </p>



<p>"While TXTL is widely employed for various purposes, it has not previously been used to overcome barriers to DNA transformation in bacteria," Beisel explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-imprint-the-advantages">IMPRINT: The advantages</h2>



<p>The benefits of IMPRINT don't stop at breaking barriers. Compared to existing methods, IMPRINT is faster and simpler, saving scientists valuable time and resources. </p>



<p>"Current approaches require purifying individual DNA methyltransferases or expressing them in <em>E. coli</em>, which often proves cytotoxic. These methods can take days to weeks and only reconstitute a fraction of the bacterium's methylation pattern," said Justin M. Vento, a PhD student at NC State and the first author of the study.</p>



<p>The researchers confirmed that IMPRINT could express a diverse array of DNA methyltransferases that could be combined to mimic complex methylation patterns.</p>



<p>This method significantly improved DNA transformation in bacteria such as the pathogen Salmonella and the probiotic Bifidobacteria.</p>

<p>How can we better understand the looming problem of extreme flooding, as we brace ourselves for an era of escalating rainfall? It turns out that flood prediction is not just about how much it's raining, but when and how frequently.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A new study from the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (<a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CIRES</a>) has shed light on this pressing topic.</p>



<p>The research was led by CIRES Fellow and <a href="https://wwa.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Western Water Assessment</a> (WWA) director, Ben Livneh, along with his fellow scientist, Kris Karnauskas.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>“A mystery has emerged as to why patterns of increasing extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-rainfall-events-in-the-northeast-are-set-to-increase-by-over-50-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> have not been accompanied by similar levels of flooding, garnering growing attention given concerns over future flood risks,” wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>“Antecedent moisture conditions have been proposed as the missing explanatory factor. Yet, reasons for moisture variability prior to flooding remain largely unstudied.”</p>



<p>“Here, we evaluate the potential utility of <em>precipitation intermittency</em>, defined as the dry spell length prior to a flood, to explain the variability of flooding over 108 watersheds from 1950 to 2022.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soil-moisture-and-flood-prediction-nbsp">Soil moisture and flood prediction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Together, the experts have navigated the choppy waters of soil moisture, revealing its significant role in predicting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flood events.</a>&nbsp;</p>



<p>Soil moisture, however, is notorious for its erratic behavior. As Livneh noted, soil water is hard to predict.</p>



<p>The researchers needed a hero, a stand-in for soil moisture. They found one in the form of precipitation intermittency: the time gap between rainfall events.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It seems simple - the longer the dry spell, the bigger the storm required to trigger a flood. Conversely, when the rains are more frequent, even the tiniest drizzle can escalate to a flood.</p>



<p>"We can actually understand changes in flood risk based on the number of days since the last rain event,” noted Livneh. "We wanted to make it straightforward because soil water is hard to predict."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-historical-rain-events-nbsp">Analyzing historical rain events&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The scientists focused their lens on semi-arid and arid regions, homing in on rain rather than snow. The next piece of the puzzle: analyzing historical rain events across 108 watersheds throughout the U.S. from 1950-2022.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The objective was to understand the correlation between wet or dry soils before <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-gets-an-unpredictable-boost-from-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heavy rain</a> events and consequent flooding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tricky-terrain-of-soil-moisture">Tricky terrain of soil moisture</h2>



<p>Navigating the world of soil moisture is not as simple as it may seem. Nels Bjarke is a WWA postdoctoral researcher who led the analysis for the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We don't have comprehensive observations of soil moisture that are continuous over space or continuous through time,” said Bjarke. &nbsp;</p>



<p>"Therefore, it can be difficult to apply some sort of predictive framework for flooding using just soil moisture because the data are sparse."</p>



<p>The experts turned to precipitation as a stand-in. They found that the timing of the rain, not the quantity, held the key.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciphering-the-code-of-flood-prediction">Deciphering the code of flood prediction </h2>



<p>The researchers developed a timescale to gauge precipitation intermittency. They broke down intermittency into segments of five days.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Shorter breaks of ten days or less signified low intermittency, while prolonged dry spells of 20 days or more indicated high intermittency. They discovered that after long dry periods, the probability of a flood reduced by 30 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-2013-boulder-floods">The 2013 Boulder floods</h2>



<p>The devastating floods in Boulder in 2013 serve as an all-too-real example. Seven days of relentless rain nearly doubled the previous rainfall record. The event displaced hundreds and caused $2 billion in property damage, according to NOAA.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that this study can significantly aid forecasters and emergency managers in anticipating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-ground-amplifies-flood-risk-from-sea-level-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flood risks</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Since precipitation data is widely available, it can act as a proxy for soil moisture, enabling more accurate flood predictions.</p>



<p>“As we enter the era of big data, we can benefit from simple proxies like the dry-spell length as a way to more intuitively understand extreme events,” said Livneh.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969724039718?dgcid=author" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Science of the Total Environment</em></a>.</p>

<p>Two new species of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-psilocybin-mushrooms-got-their-magic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">psychoactive mushrooms</a> in the genus Psilocybe have been identified in southern Africa, bringing the total to six known indigenous species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite Psilocybe being among the most well-known and studied psychoactive mushrooms, these new species, <em>Psilocybe ingeli</em> and <em>Psilocybe maluti</em>, were only recently discovered.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings were detailed in a paper published in the journal <em>Mycologia</em> by researchers from <a href="https://www.sun.ac.za/english">Stellenbosch University</a> (SU) and citizen mycologists.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that although there are no studies on the origin of the genus <em>Psilocybe</em>, it is possible that the genus originates from Africa.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-citizen-scientists-find-new-mushroom-species">Citizen scientists find new mushroom species</h2>



<p><em>Psilocybe ingeli</em> was discovered in 2023 in KwaZulu-Natal by Talan Moult, a self-taught citizen mycologist.&nbsp;</p>



<p><em>Psilocybe maluti</em> was found in 2021 on a small holding in Free State by Daniella Mulder, who sent photos of the mushrooms to Andrew Killian, one of South Africa’s leading citizen mycologists based in Somerset West.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Both of the specimens were then sent to Breyten van der Merwe at SU for DNA sequencing and analysis in the lab of Prof. Karin Jacobs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traditional-use-of-mushrooms">Traditional use of mushrooms</h2>



<p>The paper also highlights the traditional use of <em>P. maluti</em> by Basotho traditional healers in Lesotho. According to the researchers, this appears to be the only recorded first-hand report of hallucinogenic mushrooms being used traditionally in Africa.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Cullen Taylor Clark, a citizen mycologist and co-author, worked with Mamosebetsi Sethathi, a Mosotho traditional healer, to document the use of <em>P. maluti</em> (locally known as koae-ea-lekhoaba) in traditional healing practices. </p>



<p>This forms part of a larger effort led by Clark to document the use of mushrooms by indigenous groups in southern Africa.</p>



<p>“These two species were sent to me by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/citizen-scientists-rare-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">citizen scientists</a>. It would be impossible for a single researcher to cover a fraction of an area these mushroom enthusiasts have access to. This is the only way we will be able to further studies in African <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/a-beginners-guide-to-mycology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mycology</a>,” Van der Merwe said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-promoting-a-love-of-mushrooms">Promoting a love of mushrooms</h2>



<p>“There are only a handful of mycologists in Africa documenting local biodiversity,” Jacobs added. “Considering the vast mycological diversity on the continent, it is a daunting task. Collaborating with citizen mycologists is therefore hugely beneficial.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In addition to more material, collaboration also opens avenues for conversation and exploration, which can lead to documenting mycophilia (the love of mushrooms) on the African continent.”</p>



<p>These collaborative efforts underscore the critical role of citizen scientists in expanding our understanding of mycological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-fungi-determine-the-gradient-of-forest-diversity-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diversity</a> and traditional uses of mushrooms in Africa. </p>



<p>The research not only highlights new mushroom species but also the cultural significance and potential benefits of these fungi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-history-of-psilocybin-mushrooms">History of psilocybin mushrooms</h2>



<p>The history of psilocybin mushrooms is deeply connected to human culture, spirituality, and medicine. Archaeological evidence shows that magic mushrooms were used by indigenous peoples for thousands of years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is particularly true in Central and South America. The ancient Aztecs called these psychedelic fungi "teonanácatl," meaning "flesh of the gods." They used them in religious ceremonies to induce visions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Spanish chroniclers in the 16th century documented these rituals. However, colonial authorities often suppressed the practice, considering it heretical.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-renewed-attention-nbsp">Renewed attention<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h3>



<p>In the 1950s, psilocybin mushrooms gained renewed attention. R. Gordon Wasson, an American ethnomycologist, participated in a traditional mushroom ceremony in Mexico. His 1957 publication in Life magazine caught the public and scientific community's interest.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Soon after, Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist known for discovering LSD, isolated psilocybin and its active metabolite, psilocin.</p>



<p>The 1960s saw extensive research into psilocybin's therapeutic potential. Scientists explored its efficacy in treating depression and anxiety.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the counterculture movement and its anti-establishment sentiments led to a backlash. The United States prohibited psilocybin and other psychedelics under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-interest">Scientific interest</h3>



<p>Recently, scientific interest in psilocybin has surged again. Modern studies highlight its benefits for mental health therapies. The compound shows promise in treating treatment-resistant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/compound-in-magic-mushrooms-effectively-treats-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a>, PTSD, and end-of-life anxiety.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This renewed focus acknowledges the historical significance of psilocybin mushrooms. It also explores their potential for future medical applications.</p>

<p>This enlightening study is from the reputable <a href="https://www.ars.usda.gov/plains-area/gfnd/gfhnrc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USDA-ARS</a> Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center.</p>



<p>A team of passionate scientists, led by Dr. Julie Hess, worked hard to challenge our current beliefs about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/contamination-crisis-microplastics-found-in-88-of-protein-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food</a> processing.</p>

<p>The researchers contrasted two diets reflective of typical Western consumption. </p>



<p>One consisted of minimally processed foods, while the other composed of ultra-processed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-of-ultra-processed-foods-revealed-in-30-year-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a>, as defined by the NOVA classification system.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the minimally processed diet was more than twice as expensive. It also had a shorter shelf life. Additionally, it didn't provide any extra nutritional value.</p>



<p>"This study indicates that it is possible to eat a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-diet-quality-in-adolescence-linked-to-lifelong-health-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">low-quality diet</a> even when choosing mostly minimally processed foods," Hess explained. </p>



<p>"It also shows that more-processed and less-processed diets can be equally nutritious (or non-nutritious), but the more-processed diet may have a longer shelf life and be less costly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-twist-in-the-tale">Twist in the tale</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://sniglobal.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Soy Nutrition Institute Global</a>'s director of nutrition science and research, Mark Messina, Ph.D., is scheduled to present these breakthrough findings at the NUTRITION 2024.</p>



<p>This study is a sequel to their earlier work, revealing that a high-quality menu aligning with dietary guidelines can predominantly consist of ultra-processed foods.</p>



<p>This time, the scientists flipped the script, asking, "Could a low-quality menu be largely comprised of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-food-swaps-could-have-a-major-environmental-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">'simple' foods</a>?"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reality-check">Reality check</h2>



<p>The researchers composed a less-processed menu, acquiring 20% of its caloric content from ultra-processed foods. On the other hand, the more-processed menu received 67% of its energy from ultra-processed foods. </p>



<p>Both menus scored roughly 43-44 on the Healthy Eating Index, a regrettable score indicating inadequate adherence to the <a href="https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dietary Guidelines for Americans</a>.</p>



<p>The less-processed menu set back consumers by $34.87 per day per person, in stark contrast to the $13.53 per day for the more-processed menu. </p>



<p>The median expiration time for the less-processed and more-processed menu items varied drastically as well, with figures standing at 35 days and 120 days, respectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-minimally-processed-foods">Understanding minimally processed foods</h2>



<p>Julie Hess underlined that nutrient-dense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-labeling-consumer-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">packaged foods</a>, including unsweetened applesauce, ultrafiltered milk, liquid egg whites, and certain brands of raisins and canned tomatoes, could be classified as ultra-processed.</p>



<p>"The results of this study indicate that building a nutritious diet involves more than a consideration of food processing as defined by NOVA. The concepts of 'ultra-processed' food and 'less-processed' foods need to be better characterized by the nutrition research community," she concluded.</p>



<p>This study serves as a wake-up call, encouraging a holistic approach that goes beyond considering food processing levels, including minimally processed foods, to examining the nature of the foods we consume.</p>

<p>The findings from this study could change public health policies and nutritional guidelines. Current advice favors minimally processed foods. </p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."</p>



<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
