<p>The first weekend of September offers two dazzling lunar shows, depending on where you live. Across parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, the skies will host a total lunar eclipse.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For more than five hours, Earth will line up perfectly between the Sun and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-is-the-black-moon-in-2025-and-why-does-it-occur/">Moon</a>, casting a deep shadow across the lunar surface.&nbsp;</p>



<p>During totality, which will last 82 minutes, only red light will filter through Earth’s atmosphere and reach the Moon. That’s what gives the lunar face its striking copper hue, earning the name “blood moon.”</p>



<p>Here in the United States, the eclipse will stay below the horizon. The wait won’t be long, though. According to <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, the next blood moon lunar eclipse that will be visible from America will occur on March 3, 2026.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-a-total-lunar-eclipse">Understanding a total lunar eclipse</h2>



<p>A total <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/total-lunar-eclipse-will-paint-the-moon-blood-red-tomorrow/">lunar eclipse</a> happens when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the Moon’s surface. </p>



<p>Instead of going completely dark, the Moon usually glows a deep red or copper color. That’s because Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters sunlight, letting only the longer, reddish wavelengths reach the Moon. </p>



<p>It’s the same effect that makes sunsets look red, but in this case the Earth is creating a “sunset glow” that wraps all the way around and paints the Moon.</p>



<p>Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye - no special glasses are needed. They also last much longer: totality can stretch for over an hour, compared to just a few minutes for a total solar eclipse. </p>



<p>Anyone on the night side of Earth can see it, which makes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harvest-moon-2024-will-feature-a-partial-lunar-eclipse/">lunar eclipses</a> more common to experience. </p>



<p>For astronomers, these events are chances to study Earth’s atmosphere, since the way light bends and colors the Moon gives clues about dust, clouds, and even volcanic ash floating around our planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-final-full-moon-of-summer">Final full moon of summer</h2>



<p>On Sunday, September 7, the Corn Moon will reach its peak illumination at 2:09 p.m. EDT. That moment takes place below the horizon for U.S. viewers, but the full moon will climb into the eastern sky, glowing bright and round by nightfall.</p>



<p>The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that the Moon will look nearly full on both the nights before and after September 7. For sky watchers, that means an extended window to catch a glimpse.</p>



<p>Near the horizon, the Moon may appear golden or orange for a while, but as it rises higher, the glow will shift to a clearer white.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-is-it-called-the-corn-moon">Why is it called the Corn Moon?</h2>



<p>The name Corn Moon traces back to the Algonquin tribes in the northeastern United States. </p>



<p>Late summer was the time to gather their staple crops of corn, beans, pumpkins, squash, and wild rice.&nbsp;The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildlife-vehicle-collisions-surge-during-full-moon-nights/">full moon</a> served as a seasonal marker for this period of abundance and labor.</p>



<p>European traditions gave their own names to the September moon. Some called it the Fruit Moon, marking the ripening of orchard crops.</p>



<p>Others referred to it as the Barley Moon in recognition of the grain harvest. Each name reflects a calendar rooted in the cycles of planting and gathering.</p>

<p>It’s tempting to confuse the Corn Moon with the better-known Harvest Moon, but the two aren’t the same.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Harvest Moon is the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox. In 2025, that moment comes on October 7, which also happens to be the first supermoon of the year.</p>



<p>By contrast, the Corn Moon always comes in September. A fascinating new study from <a href="https://www.aalto.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aalto University</a> in Finland suggests that just believing an AI is helping us can significantly boost our performance, even when the AI is unreliable or nonexistent.</p>

<p>Researchers at Aalto University created an innovative experiment to explore how our beliefs about AI affect our performance. Participants underwent a basic letter recognition exercise twice. <p>Adding a twist, the researchers divided the participants into two groups. One group was informed that the AI was reliable and would improve their performance. The other group was told the AI was unreliable and would degrade their performance.</p>



<p>The catch? Neither AI system actually existed. The researchers created a "sham-AI" that provided random feedback, regardless of the participants' actual performance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-belief-trumps-reality">Belief trumps reality</h2>



<p>The results of the study were unexpected and remarkable. Participants in both groups, regardless of whether they were informed of the AI's unreliability or not, demonstrated a significant improvement in their performance on the letter recognition task when they believed they were being assisted by an AI system. </p>



<p>This improvement was evident in both the speed and accuracy with which they completed the task, indicating a heightened level of focus and engagement when participants perceived AI involvement.</p>



<p>"What we discovered is that people have extremely high expectations of these systems, and we can't make them AI doomers simply by telling them a program doesn't work," explained Professor Robin Welsch. The researchers replicated the study online with similar results, further solidifying the power of belief in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-decipher-every-possible-facial-expression-outperforming-therapists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a>.</p>

Firstly, this phenomenon makes it hard to discern if improvements in performance stem from the actual capabilities of the AI or merely from people's belief in its effectiveness. Thus, distinguishing the true impact of AI technology requires careful consideration of how beliefs influence outcomes.</p>



<p>In the human-computer interaction research, expectations play a critical role in shaping study results. The anticipatory beliefs of participants can significantly sway the outcomes, potentially skewing the data. To address this, implementing placebo-controlled studies is crucial to isolate the real effects of AI from the psychological impact of expectations.</p>



<p>Marketing strategies often capitalize on the placebo effect, promoting AI systems in a way that heightens expectations among users. This approach can lead to exaggerated beliefs about the effectiveness of AI, which may not accurately reflect its actual capabilities. As a result, consumers may perceive AI technologies as more powerful than they are, complicating the assessment of their true utility and performance.</p>

<p>"People perform better if they think they have an AI assistant – even when they've been told it's unreliable and won't help them," said doctoral researcher Agnes Kloft.</p>

<p>Vaping devices, also known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/e-cigarettes-linked-to-increased-risk-of-heart-failure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">e-cigarettes</a> or electronic vapor products (EVPs), are often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes and attract many users with their diverse flavors. </p>



<p>However, these devices are far from harmless. They contain nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and potentially dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde and various metals. </p>



<p>Exposure to these substances can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory diseases, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/e-cigarettes-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular diseases</a>, and cancer. </p>



<p>Furthermore, a severe lung condition has been linked to vaping, particularly due to the use of vitamin E acetate, an additive in some THC-containing e-cigarettes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-alarming-trend-in-teen-vaping">An alarming trend in teen vaping </h2>



<p>Despite the known risks, vaping has seen a dramatic increase among U.S. adolescents. Researchers from <a href="https://www.fau.edu/medicine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine</a> conducted a study using data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey which included participants from ninth to 12th grade. </p>



<p>The team observed trends among 57,006 subjects from 2015 to 2021. The findings revealed significant and concerning rises in daily usage of electronic vapor products.</p>



<p>In 2015, only 2% of adolescents reported daily use of EVPs. By 2019, this figure had jumped to 7.2% - more than a threefold increase. </p>



<p>Although there was a slight decline to 5% in 2021, possibly due to COVID-19-related lockdowns and remote schooling, the numbers remain alarmingly high.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disparities-in-usage">Disparities in usage</h2>



<p>The study highlighted not only the rise in general usage but also interesting shifts in demographic patterns. </p>



<p>Initially, in 2015, more boys (2.8%) were using EVPs compared to girls (1.1%). By 2021, this trend reversed with 5.6% of girls vaping compared to 4.5% of boys. </p>



<p>Usage rates among different races also varied, with white teens showing the highest increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/teenagers-vape-alarming-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaping rates</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-consequences-of-vaping">Potential consequences of vaping</h2>



<p>Dr. Charles H. Hennekens, the first author of the study, warned about the severe implications of vaping. </p>



<p>"EVP use increases risks of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabidiol-could-help-cure-nicotine-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nicotine addiction</a>, drug-seeking behavior, mood disorders, and long-term risks of avoidable premature morbidities and mortality," he explained. </p>



<p>Moreover, vaping could serve as a gateway to cigarette smoking, which continues to be a major cause of preventable death globally.</p>



<p>Dr. Panagiota “Yiota” Kitsantas, another researcher involved in the study, emphasized that nearly all e-cigarettes in the U.S. contain nicotine, posing significant addiction risks. </p>



<p>"EVP use is not a safer alternative to smoking but may have contributed to the decline in regular tobacco product use. However, it also introduces new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-vaping-e-cigarettes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health risks</a>, including nicotine addiction," noted Dr. Kitsantas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-need-for-targeted-interventions">The need for targeted interventions</h2>



<p>Given these alarming trends, the researchers advocate for targeted interventions to address the rising vaping rates among adolescents. They suggest mass media campaigns and peer interventions to counteract the social norms that promote such risky behaviors. </p>



<p>"Clinical interventions could include routine screening for vaping and nicotine dependence during adolescent health assessments as well as counseling and tailored cessation programs," said Dr. Hennekens.</p>



<p>While there has been a decline in traditional cigarette smoking among U.S. teens, the introduction and rise of electronic vapor products (EVPs) pose new public health challenges. </p>



<p>These findings underline the need for continuous research and proactive measures to protect young individuals from the allure and dangers of vaping.</p>

<p>Vaping became popular among teens in the early 2010s. Electronic cigarettes were first developed in the early 2000s and introduced to the U.S. market around 2007. </p>



<p>Initially marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes for adults looking to quit smoking, these products quickly caught the attention of younger demographics. </p>



<p>By the early 2010s, as vaping devices became more sophisticated and flavors more appealing, their use among teenagers began to rise significantly. </p>



<p>This trend was exacerbated by aggressive marketing, which often targeted younger audiences with social media campaigns and appealing flavors, leading to widespread use among teens throughout the decade.</p>



<p>The United States has one of the highest rates of teen vaping. This is due in part to the early introduction and widespread availability of e-cigarettes. Other countries have also reported increases in teen vaping, but the prevalence in the U.S. is notably high.</p>

<p>While 2023 is recognized as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hottest year</a> on record, our reliance on instrumental records only dates back to approximately 1850, and even these are often geographically limited. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hottest-summer-since-the-peak-of-the-roman-empire-nbsp">Hottest summer since the peak of the Roman Empire&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> and <a href="https://www.uni-mainz.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz</a> has now extended this perspective by integrating data derived from tree rings, which chronicle climate changes annually and span two millennia.</p>



<p>Despite natural climate fluctuations over centuries, the summer of 2023 has set a new precedent, being the hottest since the peak of the Roman Empire, exceeding natural climate variability by half a degree Celsius.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-global-warming">Rapid global warming</h2>



<p>“When you look at the long sweep of history, you can see just how dramatic recent global warming is,” said Ulf Büntgen, an expert in dendroecology and paleoclimatology at Cambridge. “2023 was an exceptionally hot year, and this trend will continue unless we reduce<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> greenhouse gas emissions</a> dramatically.”</p>



<p>These findings also show that the thresholds set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aim to keep global warming below 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, have already been surpassed in the Northern Hemisphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historical-climate-patterns-nbsp">Historical climate patterns&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The scientists meticulously compared sparse and inconsistent early instrumental temperature records from 1850 to 1900 with extensive tree-ring data. This comparison not only provided a more comprehensive view of historical climate patterns but also led to the recalibration of the 19th-century temperature baseline, which is now understood to be several tenths of a degree Celsius cooler than previously estimated.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Consequently, the summer of 2023 in the Northern Hemisphere was found to be 2.07C warmer than the average temperatures between 1850 and 1900.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-better-perspective-on-climate-change-nbsp">A better perspective on climate change&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Many of the conversations we have around global warming are tied to a baseline temperature from the mid-19th century, but why is this the baseline? What is normal, in the context of a constantly-changing climate, when we’ve only got 150 years of meteorological measurements?” Büntgen said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Only when we look at climate reconstructions can we better account for natural variability and put recent anthropogenic climate change into context.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tree-rings-revealed-the-hottest-summer">Tree rings revealed the hottest summer</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-largest-ever-solar-storm-discovered-through-tree-rings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tree rings</a> are particularly valuable for this type of research, providing detailed and accurately dated records of past summer temperatures. These records indicate that most cooler periods in the last 2000 years followed major volcanic eruptions, like the one in 536 CE, which resulted in the coldest summer on record, being 3.93C colder than the summer of 2023. </p>



<p>In contrast, warmer periods are often linked to the El Niño climate pattern, which has been exacerbated by greenhouse gas emissions in recent decades, leading to stronger El Niño events and consequently hotter summers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-longer-and-more-severe-heat-waves-nbsp">Longer and more severe heat waves&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“It’s true that the climate is always changing, but the warming in 2023, caused by greenhouse gasses, is additionally amplified by El Niño conditions, so we end up with longer and more severe heat waves and extended periods of drought,” said lead author Jan Esper, a professor of climate science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When you look at the big picture, it shows just how urgent it is that we reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately.”</p>



<p>The scientists argued that while their results are robust for the Northern Hemisphere, it is more difficult to obtain global averages for the same period due to lack of data for the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, the Southern Hemisphere also responds differently to global warming, since it is far more ocean-covered than the Northern Hemisphere.</p>

<p>Cat Royale, an award-winning research project, resulted from collaboration between <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Nottingham</a> scientists and Blast Theory artists. This project crafted a "multispecies world." In it, three cats lived with a robotic arm. They coexisted for six hours each day across twelve days.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-just-robotic-engineering">More than just robotic engineering</h2>



<p>A recently published study sheds light on some surprising findings. It turns out that designing the robot and its interactions isn't enough. The design of the environment in which the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-will-soon-be-able-to-use-air-to-move-objects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot</a> operates, and the role of humans in that environment, are just as important.</p>



<p>"At first glance, the project is about designing a robot to enrich the lives of a family of cats by playing with them," said Professor Steve Benford, who led the research. "Under the surface, however, it explores the question of what it takes to trust a robot to look after our loved ones and potentially ourselves."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-robot-arm-and-the-playful-cats">Robot arm and the playful cats</h2>



<p>The robotic arm at the heart of Cat Royale engaged the feline participants through a variety of playful interactions, including dragging a toy mouse, dangling a feather "bird," and dispensing treats. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-suitable-environment-for-robot-cat-interaction">Suitable environment for robot-cat interaction</h2>



<p>The implications of this research are intriguing. Designing robots involves interior design as well as engineering and AI. If you want to introduce robots into your home to look after your loved ones, then you will likely need to redesign your home.</p>



<p>"As we learned through Cat Royale, creating a multispecies system - where cats, robots, and humans are all accounted for - takes more than just designing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-cannot-outrun-animals-but-theyre-evolving-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot</a>," said Eike Schneiders, an assistant professor in the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Nottingham. </p>



<p>"We had to ensure animal wellbeing at all times, while simultaneously ensuring that the interactive installation engaged the (human) audiences around the world," noted Eike Schneiders, a researcher involved in the project.</p>

<p>The impact of pollution and climate change on global ecosystems remains a complex, underexplored field. A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.uta.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Texas at Arlington</a> offers new insights, particularly concerning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-of-the-worlds-bird-species-are-now-in-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird populations</a> on islands, suggesting that our understanding may be more limited than previously recognized. </p>



<p>“Anthropogenic activities have reshaped biodiversity on islands worldwide. However, it remains unclear how island attributes and land-use change interactively shape multiple facets of island biodiversity through community assembly processes,” wrote the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-discovery-among-island-birds">Surprising discovery among island birds </h2>



<p>By examining bird populations from the Zhoushan Archipelago (China’s largest island chain), the experts were surprised to find more bird species in agricultural areas than in forested regions.</p>



<p>“Usually, one predicts that there should be fewer species of birds living in agricultural areas where trees have been removed and the land manipulated than in natural habitats like forests,”&nbsp; said co-author Luke O. Frishkoff, an assistant professor of biology at UT Arlington.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But strangely, on the islands we studied off the coast of China, we found opposite patterns with the communities of birds under examination - there were more bird species in agriculture than in forested areas.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The research team, including collaborators from <a href="https://english.ecnu.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East China Normal University</a> in Shanghai, the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a> in the United Kingdom, and the <a href="https://www.upmc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pittsburgh Medical Center</a>, chose islands for their study due to their ecological significance: while islands constitute only 5% of the Earth's land mass, they support 20% of its animal species.</p>



<p>Over two years, the scientists conducted four surveys during the breeding season across 34 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-types-of-islands-attract-migratory-birds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">islands</a>, ranging from forested to farmed, and from isolated to more accessible. Their findings challenged preconceived notions about habitat preference among birds. </p>



<p>“Human activities have extensively modified habitats on three-quarters of all the Earth’s surface worldwide, and islands are no different,” Frishkoff said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-island-bird-populations-nbsp">Island bird populations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The data revealed that bird populations on smaller, more isolated islands were more evolutionarily similar than those on larger, less remote islands. This observation was contrary to the team's initial hypothesis that forested areas would harbor more diverse and numerous bird species than agricultural settings.</p>



<p>“All this is suggesting that there are some fundamental principles of ecology that we don’t yet understand, and that there is perhaps something special about islands that affects species that can tolerate human environments differently than species that require natural ecosystems for survival,” said Friskhoff.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We need additional research to better understand why bird evolution, and the evolution of species in general, is different on islands so that we can better protect and sustain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> in other human-dominated ecosystems,” he concluded.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-isolation-and-evolution">Isolation and evolution</h3>



<p>The isolation of islands means that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-can-switch-their-perception-of-earths-magnetic-field-on-and-off/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> that arrive, whether by flight or accidental means such as drifting on vegetation, often diverge significantly from their mainland ancestors. </p>



<p>Over generations, these birds can evolve to exploit different ecological niches. For instance, some may become flightless if there are no predators, or develop unique feeding techniques tailored to the resources available on the island.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-nbsp">Challenges&nbsp;</h3>



<p>However, this remarkable diversity is also coupled with vulnerability. Island birds are often more susceptible to extinction due to limited population sizes, restricted habitats, and a reduced genetic pool.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, they are particularly vulnerable to human impacts - such as habitat destruction, introduced species, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/body-sizes-and-shapes-of-birds-are-shrinking-as-the-earth-warms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> - which can rapidly and irrevocably alter their limited habitats. Conservation efforts are therefore critical to preserve the unique bird populations that contribute to the rich biodiversity of the world’s islands.</p>

<p>Declan Morris, a PhD candidate at the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Adelaide</a>'s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, led a pivotal research project. His work revealed a surprising level of genetic diversity among leopards in South Africa's Highveld region. </p>



<p>This significant finding illuminates the complex evolutionary history of these leopards. It also underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts to safeguard their future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-lineages-one-region">Two lineages, one region</h2>



<p>The newfound genetic diversity in Highveld <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-clouded-leopard-day-the-fight-to-protect-an-elusive-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">leopards</a> stems from the convergence of two distinct maternal lineages. One lineage spans the majority of the African continent, showcasing a broad genetic base. </p>



<p>The other is more localized, found primarily in South Africa's Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga. This unexpected overlap in the Highveld region forms a unique genetic melting pot, enriching the genetic diversity of the local leopard population.</p>



<p>"We compiled the most comprehensive mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data set to date to explore the trends and leopard genetics on a continental scale," Morris explains. </p>



<p>"The results of our analysis, using a combination of mtDNA, microsatellites, and comparisons with results of other published studies, is what enabled us to determine that the leopard population in the Highveld of Mpumalanga had the highest levels of genetic diversity in the country."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-leopard-s-genetic-diversity-matters">Why leopard's genetic diversity matters</h2>



<p>Genetic diversity is a critical factor in the long-term survival of any species. It serves as a reservoir of adaptability, enabling populations to cope with environmental changes, diseases, and other challenges. <p>"High genetic diversity increases the ability for a species to adapt to a changing environment around it; therefore, it can make species more resilient to events such as climate change or the introduction of new diseases," says Morris.</p>



<p>"The discovery that the leopards in the Highveld have the highest recorded levels of genetic diversity in South Africa is significant as it places a high conservation priority for the population in the region."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leopard-divergence-and-genetic-reunion">Leopard divergence and genetic reunion</h2>



<p>Researchers believe the two leopard lineages diverged between 960,000 and 440,000 years ago. They attribute this separation to the aridification of the Limpopo Basin, which likely served as a barrier between the two groups.</p>



<p>Now, after hundreds of thousands of years, these lineages are reuniting in the Mpumalanga Province, where Morris's research was conducted. This unexpected reunion highlights the dynamic nature of leopard populations and the interconnectedness of their habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-assumptions-and-embracing-connectivity">Challenging assumptions and embracing connectivity</h2>



<p>The discovery of high genetic diversity in the Highveld leopards challenges previous assumptions about their isolation. Initially, researchers hypothesized that the fragmented nature of the region would lead to genetic isolation. </p>



<p>The findings from the study reveal a surprising degree of connectivity between the Highveld leopards and those in the Lowveld areas and Kruger National Park. Despite geographical separations, these populations maintain genetic links, indicating a more interconnected ecosystem than previously thought. This connectivity enhances the genetic flow and diversity among the leopard populations across these regions.</p>



<p>"We had originally hypothesised that the Highveld leopards would be isolated as they exist in a highly fragmented region, but this discovery shows us that it's not as isolated as we thought," says Morris.</p>



<p>"Gene flow is occurring with Lowveld areas and Kruger National Park. We found an unexpected level of connectivity, even across landscapes highly modified by humans."</p>

<p>By analyzing the long calls of 13 individual orangutans, the researchers sought to categorize the pulse types within these vocalizations and assess their variations.</p>

<p>“We found low inter-observer reliability and poor classification accuracy using supervised approaches, indicating that pulse types were not discrete,” noted the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We propose a new pulse type classification scheme that is highly reproducible across observers and exhibits high classification accuracy using support vector machines. Although the low number of call types suggests long calls are fairly simple, the continuous gradation of sounds seems to greatly boost the complexity of this system.”</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/searching-for-technosignatures-from-intelligent-life-in-the-cosmos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmos</a> has always held mysteries, but perhaps none as profound as the story of its inception, featuring the universe's first stars. These ancient luminaries, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-galaxy-far-far-away-scientists-observe-the-most-distant-object-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Population III</a> stars, were quite unlike those we see today. </p>



<p>Formed primarily from hydrogen and helium and devoid of heavier elements, they burned hotter, larger, and faster than stars like our Sun, exhausting their fuel quickly and living short lives. </p>



<p>These stars are not just astronomical entities but are key to understanding how the universe evolved from a simple to a complex state, spawning the diverse galaxy systems we observe today.</p>



<p>"The first-generation metal-free stars, referred to as Population III (Pop III) stars, are believed to be the first objects to form out of the pristine gas in the very early Universe," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-tools">Revolutionary tools</h2>



<p>Peering back across billions of years to observe these stars is no small feat. Enter NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Slated for launch by May 2027, Roman is set to revolutionize our view of the cosmos. </p>



<p>With a field of view 200 times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope and the ability to survey the sky 1,000 times faster, Roman offers unprecedented capabilities. </p>



<p>The telescope could potentially unveil the elusive Pop III stars by observing their dramatic endings rather than their brilliant beginnings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shredded-by-giants-the-demise-of-the-first-stars">Shredded by giants: The demise of the first stars</h2>



<p>Instead of seeking intact stars, astronomers will search for the signs of Pop III stars that have met their demise through interactions with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supermassive-binary-black-holes-secrets-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a>. </p>



<p>This catastrophic end results in a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/18-black-holes-captured-devouring-nearby-stars-in-dramatic-tidal-disruption-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tidal disruption event</a> (TDE), where a star is torn apart, and its remnants glow intensely enough to be seen from great distances. </p>



<p>"Since we know that black holes likely exist at these early epochs, catching them as they’re devouring these first stars might offer us the best shot to indirectly detect Pop III stars," explained Priyamvada Natarajan, a co-author of the study from <a href="https://www.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-the-echoes-of-ancient-light">Detecting the echoes of ancient light</h2>



<p>TDEs emit light across a spectrum, including X-ray, radio, UV, and optical light. Due to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universes-expansion-rate-hubble-tension-puzzles-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe's expansion</a>, the light from these early first stars shifts into near-infrared wavelengths, which Roman is designed to detect. </p>



<p>Moreover, the timescale of these events stretches significantly due to their large redshift. Unlike a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supernova-explosions-could-damage-distant-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supernova</a>, which brightens and fades over shorter periods, a Pop III TDE brightens over hundreds to thousands of days, with a decline that could span over a decade. </p>



<p>"The evolution timescales of Pop III TDEs are very long, which is one feature that could distinguish a Pop III TDE from other transients including supernovas," noted Rudrani Kar Chowdhury, a postdoctoral fellow at the <a href="https://www.hku.hk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hong Kong</a> and first author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cosmic-hunt-for-the-first-stars">The cosmic hunt for the first stars</h2>



<p>While the James Webb Space Telescope also plays a vital role in observing TDEs, its smaller field of view limits its efficiency as a TDE hunter. </p>



<p>Roman, with its expansive survey capability through the High Latitude Wide Area survey covering about 2,000 square degrees of the sky, is better suited to this task. </p>



<p>"Roman can go very deep and yet cover a very big area of the sky. That's what's needed to detect a meaningful sample of these TDEs,” said Jane Dai, a professor of astrophysics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-spectroscopic-follow-up">The spectroscopic follow-up</h2>



<p>Once a TDE is spotted, follow-up observations are crucial. Here, Webb's advanced spectroscopic tools come into play. Since Pop III stars contain only hydrogen and helium, their TDE spectra would lack the metal lines typically found in later star generations. </p>



<p>Identifying these unique spectral signatures could confirm the presence of Pop III stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-our-cosmic-knowledge">Expanding our cosmic knowledge </h2>



<p>This ambitious approach not only holds the promise of detecting the universe's first stars but also opens up broader opportunities to understand galactic and cosmic phenomena closer to home. </p>

<p>A team of researchers at <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M University</a>, led by Dr. Leif Andersson, is pioneering an approach to fisheries management that leverages the power of population genomics. This cutting-edge field involves analyzing the genetic makeup of entire fish populations to gain unprecedented insights into their biology, ecology, and vulnerabilities.</p>

<p>Once a reference genome is established, scientists examine DNA from various <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-fleets-hidden-industrial-fishing-activity-exposed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> populations. They identify genetic variations that show unique adaptations and migration patterns. This data is crucial for understanding connections between fish populations, their spawning locations, and their responses to environmental changes.</p>



<p>"Step two is figuring out where the fish are spawning; you need to know where the population that you want to monitor is reproducing," explains Dr. Andersson. "Once you know that, you have to take samples of fish at the spawning point and sequence their DNA. Then you can compare the population's DNA to the reference genome and see the differences."</p>

When faced with environmental challenges such as rising temperatures, pollution, or the emergence of new diseases, a genetically diverse population is more likely to possess the necessary traits to survive and reproduce.</p>



<p>Conversely, populations with low genetic diversity are inherently vulnerable. With a limited range of genetic variations, they are less equipped to cope with environmental stressors and are more susceptible to diseases. This vulnerability can lead to population declines and, in severe cases, even extinction.</p>



<p>By using population genomics, scientists can pinpoint fish populations with low <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/channel-island-foxes-threatened-by-low-genetic-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">genetic diversity</a>. This identification allows fishery managers to act protectively. <p>"We hope that population genomics can become a powerful tool for assessing and maintaining biodiversity, not just for fish, but for many species."</p>

<p>The experts differentiated between the northern and southern populations of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbirds-have-more-colors-than-all-other-birds-combined/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hummingbirds</a>, with the former residing year-round in the high Andes and the latter migrating from sea level up to 14,000 feet during non-breeding months. </p>

<p>Senior author Chris Witt, a biologist at the University of New Mexico, highlighted the extent of their difference: “They are as different from each other as chimpanzees are from bonobos. The two species do overlap on their high elevation wintering grounds.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s mind-boggling that until now nobody figured out the giant hummingbird mystery, yet these two <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbird-species-newly-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> have been separate for millions of years.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-the-migratory-paths-of-hummingbirds-nbsp">Tracking the migratory paths of hummingbirds&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The discovery was initially part of a project to trace the migratory paths of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-hummingbirds-deal-with-their-need-for-flight-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hummingbirds</a>, using geolocators and satellite transmitters to track individual birds. </p>



<p>Remarkably, the researchers documented one of the longest hummingbird migrations in the world, with birds traveling up to 5,200 miles from the Chilean coast to the Andes of Peru and back.</p>



<p>Speciation appears to have been driven by shifts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-behaviors-are-shaped-by-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migratory behavior</a>, though it is unclear whether this trait was gained or lost. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-northern-and-southern-giant-hummingbird-nbsp">Northern and southern giant hummingbird&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Previously, the giant hummingbird was the only recognized species on this branch of the hummingbird family tree, which contrasts sharply with its closest relatives that have diversified into 165 distinct species.</p>



<p>The researchers have proposed naming the two species the northern giant hummingbird and southern giant hummingbird, with the latter retaining the Latin name <em>Patagona gigas</em> and the former newly dubbed <em>Patagona chaski</em>, "chaski" being a Quechua word meaning “messenger.”</p>



<p>The study benefited significantly from the support and local knowledge of communities in Peru and Chile, particularly the village in Peru where co-author Emil Bautista resides. Capturing these birds for study proved to be exceptionally challenging due to their keen awareness and territorial behavior.</p>



<p>Despite these difficulties, both populations of the giant hummingbird are currently stable and are commonly seen within their ranges, sometimes even visiting backyard nectar feeders.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-nbsp">Future research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Going forward, the team plans to investigate the interactions between these two species, particularly in their shared wintering grounds.</p>



<p>“We have to figure out where these two forms come together and how they interact,” Witt said. “Do they compete, is one dominant over the other, how might they partition resources, and do they mix or spatially segregate within the winter range? Lots of interesting questions to pursue!”</p>



<p>“I’m really interested in how southern giant hummingbirds make such dramatic shifts in elevation during migration. They travel from sea level to the high Andes in just a few weeks. They’re like miniature mountain climbers. How do they change their physiology to facilitate these movements?” Williamson concluded.</p>

<p>Giant hummingbirds, known scientifically as Patagona gigas, hold the title of the largest member of the hummingbird family. They can reach a length of about 23 centimeters, making them considerably bigger than the more typically sized hummingbirds most are familiar with.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Native to the Andes Mountains, they thrive in environments ranging from semi-desert to mountainous areas in countries like Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wing-beats">Wing beats</h3>



<p>These birds are distinct not only for their size but also for their relatively slow wing beats, especially when compared to their smaller counterparts who are known for their rapid flapping.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Giant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbirds-adjust-their-wings-to-fly-through-very-tiny-spaces/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hummingbirds</a> can beat their wings at a rate of about 12 to 15 times per second, which is leisurely by hummingbird standards. This wing beat allows them to hover effectively, a trait synonymous with hummingbirds, as they feed on nectar from a variety of flowers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-body-size">Body size</h3>



<p>Their larger body size also impacts their feeding habits. Giant hummingbirds consume more nectar than the average hummingbird to sustain their energy levels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, they have adapted to a high-altitude environment, which affects the types of flowers they pollinate and their overall role in the ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite their size, they maintain the iridescent plumage characteristic of hummingbirds, although their colors might not be as vibrant as some of the more tropical species.</p>

<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."</p>



<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
