<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>A recent study has uncovered a surprising link between recreational cannabis use and a decreased risk of subjective cognitive decline (SCD). The findings challenge previous research that suggested negative associations between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoking-cannabis-significantly-increases-the-risk-of-heart-attack/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> use and cognitive health. </p>



<p>This discovery has prompted a closer look at the potential protective effects of recreational cannabis consumption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-cognitive-decline-and-cannabis-use">Studying cognitive decline and cannabis use</h2>



<p>Zhi Chen, a Master of Public Health (MPH) student, and Professor Roger Wong, Ph.D., MPH, MSW, from <a href="https://www.upstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Upstate Medical University</a>, analyzed data from the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CDC</a>.</p>



<p>They discovered that non-medical cannabis use, such as for recreational purposes, was associated with a 96 percent decreased odds of SCD compared to non-users. </p>



<p>Medical and dual (medical and non-medical) use also showed decreased odds of SCD, although not statistically significant. Surprisingly, cannabis consumption frequency and method were not significantly associated with SCD.</p>



<p>"The main takeaway is that cannabis might be protective for our cognition, but it is really crucial to have longitudinal studies because this is just a snapshot of 2021," said Wong, an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health &amp; Preventive Medicine. </p>



<p>"We do not know if non-medical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-use-linked-to-psychosis-among-adolescents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> leads to better cognition or the other way around if those with better cognition are more likely to use non-medical cannabis. We need longitudinal studies to see long term if non-medical cannabis use is protecting our cognition over time. That's something we don't know yet, but that research is hindered since cannabis remains illegal federally," Wong explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-study-design">Unique study design</h2>



<p>The study, published in <em>Current Alzheimer Research</em>, differs from previous research by focusing on middle-aged and older adults. In addition, they considered three facets of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-use-strongly-linked-to-mental-disorders-in-a-new-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis use</a>: type of use (medical or non-medical), frequency of use, and mode of use (smoking, vaping, eating, or dabbing).</p>



<p>"The reason I think this study is so great is we looked at all the different dimensions of cannabis use," Wong said. "The fact that we included all three is a huge contribution to the research because I do not believe such a study has been done before."</p>



<p>The authors acknowledged some limitations with the study, including the inability to consider state-by-state <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-of-americans-have-tried-cannabis-and-nearly-a-fifth-use-it-regularly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis regulations</a>, which could lead to potential selection bias if certain states are over or underrepresented due to varying measures of cannabis use. </p>



<p>However, the study's strengths include using a national data set, which increases the generalizability of the findings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mechanisms-behind-cannabis-protection-from-cognitive-decline">Mechanisms behind cannabis protection from cognitive decline</h2>



<p>Wong suggested that the difference in protection between medical and non-medical use could be attributed to the compounds that make up <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/after-centuries-of-speculation-heres-what-really-causes-the-munchies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a>. </p>



<p>Non-medical cannabis has higher concentrations of THC, while medical-grade cannabis has higher concentrations of CBD. </p>



<p>Non-medical users often use cannabis to improve sleep and reduce stress, which are risk factors for dementia. The protective effects of non-medical cannabis on SCD could come from better sleep and stress relief.</p>



<p>"Based on our findings, we don't see the CBD in medical cannabis being beneficial for cognitive health," Wong said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-research">Implications and future research</h2>



<p>In summary, this fascinating study challenges previous notions about the relationship between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-potency-linked-to-dramatic-rise-in-psychiatric-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> use and cognitive health, revealing that non-medical cannabis use may offer protection against subjective cognitive decline. </p>



<p>While the findings are intriguing, the authors emphasize the need for longitudinal studies to better understand the long-term effects of non-medical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-cannabis-users-no-longer-need-conventional-sleep-aids/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis use</a> on cognition and to explore the potential mechanisms behind these protective effects. </p>



<p>As cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, researchers face challenges in conducting the necessary studies to fully unravel the complexities of this relationship. </p>



<p>Nevertheless, this study serves as a starting point for further investigation into the potential benefits of non-medical cannabis use for cognitive health and highlights the importance of considering the various facets of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runners-high-cannabis-makes-exercise-more-enjoyable-and-boosts-motivation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis use</a> when examining its impact on the brain.</p>

Recreational cannabis use helps protect against cognitive decline

A recent study has uncovered a surprising link between recreational...

<p>Research from the <a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of New South Wales</a> (UNSW) in Australia, in collaboration with international partners, has brought to light the concerning levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. The results of the study reveal that we have underestimated the amount of PFAS in source waters across the globe. </p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/banning-forever-chemicals-may-threaten-us-national-security/">chemicals</a>, numbering over 14,000, have been valued since the 1950s for their remarkable properties, including resistance to heat, water, grease, and stains, leading to their prevalence in a vast array of consumer and industrial products. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forever-chemicals-nbsp">Forever chemicals&nbsp;</h2>



<p>From non-stick pans and waterproof apparel to cosmetics, insecticides, food packaging, and even firefighting foams, PFAS compounds have been integrated into daily life, despite their environmental and health risks.</p>



<p>Labeled as “<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-reveals-new-evidence-of-forever-chemicals-in-drinking-water/">forever chemicals</a>” due to their persistent nature, PFAS compounds hardly degrade in the environment or the human body, posing long-term ecological and health risks.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-contamination-in-water-sources">PFAS contamination in water sources</h2>



<p>Now, the UNSW experts have provided a pioneering global assessment of PFAS contamination in surface and groundwater sources, revealing widespread exceedances of established safe drinking water thresholds for these chemicals.</p>



<p>“Many of our source waters are above PFAS regulatory limits,” said senior author Denis O’Carroll, a professor of engineering at UNSW. “We already knew that PFAS is pervasive in the environment, but I was surprised to find out the large fraction of source waters that are above drinking water advisory recommendations. We're talking above five percent, and it goes over 50 percent in some cases.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>This comprehensive study, aggregating over 45,000 data points from government reports, databases, and peer-reviewed literature collected over roughly two decades, is the first to quantify the environmental load of PFAS on such a scale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers found high levels of PFAS in various regions, including Australia, particularly in areas historically exposed to firefighting foams, such as military and fire training facilities.</p>



<p>“Drinking water is largely safe, and I don't hesitate drinking it,” O’Caroll said. “I also don’t suggest that bottled water is better, because it doesn’t mean that they’ve done anything differently than what comes out of the tap. But I certainly think that monitoring PFAS levels and making the data easily available is worthwhile.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-implications-of-pfas">Health implications of PFAS</h2>



<p>In Australia, as well as in numerous other regions globally, it's common for individuals to have trace amounts of PFAS in their system. However, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pfas-crisis-humans-are-early-warning-system-for-wildlife-impacts/">health implications</a> of these chemicals remain a topic of debate, with a lack of universal consensus on the extent of their risk.</p>



<p>For instance, an expert health panel in Australia has indicated that the evidence linking PFAS exposure to significant health impacts is minimal to non-existent. However, international health organizations in the US and Europe associate PFAS exposure with a range of negative health effects, including decreased birth weights, elevated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-cholesterol-may-increase-the-risk-of-dementia/">cholesterol</a> levels, diminished kidney functionality, thyroid disorders, changes in sex hormone levels, weaker vaccine efficacy, and an increased risk of liver, kidney, and testicular cancers. Moreover, the <a href="https://www.who.int/">World Health Organisation</a> (WHO) classified PFOA, a variant of PFAS, as a category one human carcinogen in 2023.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controls-on-pfas-usage">Controls on PFAS usage</h2>



<p>While associations between PFAS and various health conditions have been identified, causation has not been definitively established. Nevertheless, due to the enduring presence of these substances and their associated health risks, regulatory agencies worldwide have implemented stricter controls on PFAS usage and established safety limits for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-reveals-new-evidence-of-forever-chemicals-in-drinking-water/">drinking water</a> as a precautionary measure.</p>



<p>"Two forms of PFAS initially raised concerns about 20 years ago: PFOS and PFOA," said O’Carroll. "These chemicals are regulated to different extents around the world. In the US, the proposed drinking water limits for PFOS and PFOA are four nanograms per liter."</p>



<p>In Australia, another PFAS compound, PFHxS, is subject to regulation, with a combined limit for PFOS and PFHxS set at 70 nanograms per liter, significantly exceeding the US's threshold for PFOS and PFOA.</p>



<p>"PFOA, on the other hand, is regulated in Australia at 560 nanograms per liter, which is two orders of magnitude higher than in the US," O’Carroll added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-level-of-pfas-is-safe">What level of PFAS is safe?</h2>



<p>Compared to the regulations in the US, Australia's standards appear more lenient. Yet, when compared with Canada's approach, which aggregates the total of all 14,000 PFAS compounds and caps them at 30 nanograms per liter, both the Australian and US guidelines seem less stringent.</p>



<p>The research revealed that 69 percent of worldwide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-depletion-is-accelerating-but-it-is-not-inevitable/">groundwater</a> samples, lacking known sources of contamination, surpassed <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada.html">Health Canada</a>'s safety benchmarks for drinking water, while 32 percent exceeded the US's hazard index for drinking water.</p>



<p>“There’s debate about what level PFAS should be regulated to,” O’Carroll added. “Australia has much higher limits than the US, but the question is why. Both health bodies would have different reasoning for that, and there’s not a really strong consensus here.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research-nbsp">Ongoing research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In light of the findings, the researchers aim to deepen the understanding of PFAS pollution by investigating the environmental impact of PFAS compounds in consumer products and developing new technologies to mitigate PFAS in drinking water systems. Furthermore, predictive models are in development to forecast the distribution of PFAS in the environment and their interaction with biological systems.</p>



<p>As this significant research unfolds, Professor O’Carroll urges manufacturers and consumers to exercise caution and responsibility in the use of PFAS-containing products.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We manufacture and distribute a lot of chemicals without having a full assessment on their potential health impacts. We should have judicious use of some of these chemicals. Just because they’re available, doesn't mean that we should use them,” he concluded.&nbsp;</p>

Patients with long COVID experience a wide range of symptoms that persist long after the initial infection has resolved. </p>



<p>Now, a game-changing study highlights the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/low-iron-may-be-a-key-driver-of-long-covid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential cause</a>s of this condition and opened up new avenues for treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-patterns-of-inflammation-detected">Distinct patterns of inflammation detected</h2>



<p>The study, published in the journal <em>Nature Immunology</em>, was led by researchers from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a> and involved collaborators from the Universities of Leicester, Edinburgh, and Liverpool. </p>

<p>Professor Peter Openshaw, from Imperial's National Heart &amp; Lung Institute and an ISARIC-4C lead investigator, emphasized the urgency of understanding long COVID. </p>



<p>"With one in ten <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-death-toll-of-covid-19-pandemic-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SARS-CoV-2 infections</a> leading to long COVID and an estimated 65 million people around the world suffering from ongoing symptoms, we urgently need more research to understand this condition. At the moment, it's very hard to diagnose and treat," Openshaw explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-players-in-long-covid-symptoms-and-treatment">Key players in Long COVID symptoms and treatment</h2>



<p>The researchers compared 426 people experiencing long COVID symptoms with 233 people who had fully recovered from COVID-19 hospitalization. </p>



<p>They measured 368 proteins involved in inflammation and immune system modulation and found that long COVID patients showed a pattern of immune system activation indicating inflammation of myeloid cells and activation of the complement system.</p>



<p>Dr Felicity Liew, from Imperial's National Heart &amp; Lung Institute, explained the significance. "Our findings indicate that complement activation and myeloid inflammation could be a common feature of long COVID after hospitalization, regardless of symptom type," she explained. </p>



<p>"It is unusual to find evidence of ongoing complement activation several months after acute infection has resolved, suggesting that long COVID symptoms are a result of active inflammation," Dr. Liew continued.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-five-subtypes-of-long-covid-identified-for-treatment">Five subtypes of Long COVID identified for treatment</h2>



<p>The researchers also obtained comprehensive information about the range of symptoms experienced by long COVID patients and identified five overlapping subtypes with different immune signatures: </p>

<p>Professor Openshaw concluded by saying, "This work provides strong evidence that long COVID is caused by post-viral inflammation but shows layers of complexity. We hope that our work opens the way to the development of specific tests and treatments for the various types of long COVID and believe that a 'one size fits all' approach to treatment may not work."</p>

<p>In a remarkable study, the longstanding scientific principle known as Bergmann's rule, which posits that animals in colder, high-latitude climates are typically larger than those in warmer regions, is being challenged. </p>



<p>Originating in the 1800s, this rule has been a cornerstone of ecological and evolutionary theory. Yet, researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Reading have uncovered evidence from the fossil record. This evidence, particularly involving dinosaurs, tells a different story.</p>



<p>This new research suggests that the traditional understanding of Bergmann's rule may not apply universally across different species and climates. Consequently, this challenges decades of scientific consensus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bergmann-s-rule">Bergmann's rule</h2>



<p>Bergmann's Rule states that within a broadly distributed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-self-regulated-their-body-temperature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taxonomic group</a>, the size of an animal increases with latitude and correlates with the temperature of their environment.</p>



<p>It is a key concept in ecology and evolution. Scientists have applied and tested it across different animals like birds, mammals, and insects. It falls under biogeography which studies how species and ecosystems spread across places and time.</p>



<p>The rule is particularly relevant for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sauropod-dinosaurs-lived-only-in-earths-warmer-regions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">endothermic</a> (warm-blooded) animals because they must regulate their internal body temperature. </p>



<p>According to this rule, larger-bodied animals in colder regions have an advantage in conserving heat due to their reduced surface area-to-volume ratio, which minimizes heat loss. </p>



<p>Conversely, smaller-bodied animals in warmer regions can dissipate body heat more efficiently because of their higher surface area-to-volume ratio.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-bergmann-s-rule">Challenging Bergmann's rule</h2>



<p>Lauren Wilson, a graduate student at the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/uaf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alaska Fairbanks</a> and a lead author of the study published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shares that their findings reveal the complexity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-wonder-evolutionary-success/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary traits</a>. </p>



<p>"Our study shows that the evolution of diverse body sizes in dinosaurs and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolutionary-mystery-why-are-mammals-the-only-vertebrates-to-have-only-one-lower-jawbone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a> cannot be reduced to simply being a function of latitude or temperature," Wilson explains. </p>



<p>She also emphasizes the specificity of Bergmann’s rule. The rule seems to apply only to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ichthyosaurs-warm-blooded/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">homeothermic animals</a>, those that maintain stable body temperatures, and even then, only under certain conditions. <p>The study, inspired by a conversation between Wilson and her advisor, explored if Bergmann’s rule applied to dinosaurs.</p>



<p>After a comprehensive review of data from the fossil record, including dinosaurs from Alaska's Prince Creek Formation which endured freezing conditions, the researchers found no significant correlation. The animals' body size did not seem to relate to their arctic environment.</p>

<p>"These variants are primarily associated with how much someone may <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moderate-alcohol-consumption-does-not-increase-risk-of-early-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consume alcohol</a>," explained Sanchez-Roige. "And they also tend to prevent alcohol use disorder, because these variants are primarily associated with the quantity of alcohol someone may drink."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protective-power-of-rare-variants">Protective power of rare variants</h2>



<p>The researchers discovered that certain variants, or alleles, of the SNPs under study act as "protective" factors against <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-alcohol-has-a-significant-negative-impact-on-a-fathers-sperm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">excessive alcohol</a> drinking and alcohol use disorder. </p>



<p>Interestingly, one of these alcohol-protective variants is exceptionally rare, with the most prevalent allele found in only 232 individuals out of the 2,619,939 European cohort, 29 out of the 446,646 Latin American cohort, and 7 out of the 146,776 African American cohort.</p>



<p>These protective variants influence how the body metabolizes ethanol, the intoxicating chemical in alcoholic beverages. </p>



<p>"The people who have the minor allele variant of the SNP convert ethanol to acetaldehyde very rapidly. And that causes a lot of negative effects," said Sanchez-Roige. She likened the experience to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/long-covid-linked-to-alcohol-sensitivity-and-debilitating-hangovers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bad hangover</a> that sets in almost immediately, overshadowing any pleasurable effects of alcohol.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-genetic-connections-to-alcohol-consumption">Unexpected genetic connections to alcohol consumption</h2>



<p>While the SNP variants' influence on alcohol consumption is well-established, Sanchez-Roige and her team took a "hypothesis-free" approach to the 23andMe dataset. </p>



<p>They aimed to uncover potential associations between the three <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-than-2300-genes-can-predict-alcohol-use/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SNP variants</a> and other traits and behaviors beyond alcohol consumption.</p>



<p>The researchers found that individuals with the alcohol-protective alleles generally enjoyed better health, including less chronic fatigue and less need for daily assistance with tasks. </p>



<p>However, the study also revealed some surprising and counterintuitive findings. Individuals with the alcohol-protective alleles reported higher rates of lifetime tobacco use, emotional eating, Graves' disease, hyperthyroidism, malaria, myopia, skin cancer, lung cancer, and migraine with aura.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chicken-and-egg-dilemma">Chicken-and-egg dilemma</h2>



<p>Sanchez-Roige acknowledged the complex nature of their findings, particularly when it comes to conditions known to be associated with alcohol consumption, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-consumption-linked-to-continuous-rise-in-blood-pressure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>. </p>



<p>"So is alcohol consumption leading to these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-alcohol-consumption-results-in-muscle-loss-and-frailty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions</a>?" she asks. Palmer adds, "Or do these genetic differences influence traits like malaria and skin cancer in a manner that is independent of alcohol consumption?"</p>



<p>The researchers emphasized the importance of conducting broad, hypothesis-free studies on large, diverse datasets to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic basis of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/no-evidence-that-beer-goggles-are-real-but-liquid-courage-is-definitely-a-thing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol behaviors</a> and other conditions. </p>



<p>Sanchez-Roige stressed the significance of including individuals from different ancestral backgrounds in genetic studies to promote a more inclusive and accurate understanding of human health.</p>



<p>"The study of only one group of genetically similar individuals (for example, individuals of shared European ancestry) could worsen health disparities by aiding discoveries that will disproportionately benefit only that population," she noted.</p>

<p>About 4.5 billion years ago, Earth experienced a cataclysmic collision with a smaller planet. This violent event sent molten rock hurtling into space, where it gradually came together, cooled, and crystallized to form our moon.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This narrative of the moon's creation is widely endorsed by the scientific community. Yet, as researchers from the University of Arizona <a href="https://www.lpl.arizona.edu/">Lunar and Planetary Laboratory</a> (LPL) have pointed out in a recent publication, the intricacies of this process resemble "more of a choose-your-own adventure novel."&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research presents the first geophysical evidence that a young, unstable moon turned itself inside out during the course of its evolution. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-moon-evolution">Insights into moon evolution</h2>



<p>The study provides crucial insights into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lunar-anthropocene-how-humans-have-impacted-the-moon/">evolution</a> of the lunar interior, with broader implications for understanding the development of other celestial bodies, like Earth or Mars.</p>



<p>The primary evidence supporting the moon's origin story has been derived from rock samples collected by Apollo astronauts over fifty years ago and from theoretical models. </p>



<p>These samples, mainly basaltic lava rocks, revealed unexpectedly high levels of titanium, mainly situated on the moon's nearside, sparking questions about their origin and distribution.</p>



<p>The moon's formation was rapid and intensely hot, resulting in a global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crystals-from-earths-magma-ocean-found-in-greenland-rocks/">magma ocean</a> covering its surface. As this ocean cooled and solidified, it gave rise to the moon's mantle and the luminous crust visible during a full moon. Below this surface, however, the young moon was anything but stable.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dense-material-sank-into-the-moon-then-resurfaced">Dense material sank into the moon, then resurfaced</h2>



<p>Theoretical models have suggested that the remnants of the magma ocean crystallized into dense minerals, including ilmenite, rich in titanium and iron.</p>



<p>"Because these heavy minerals are denser than the mantle underneath, it creates a gravitational instability, and you would expect this layer to sink deeper into the moon's interior," said lead author Weigang Liang, who conducted the study during his doctoral degree at LPL.</p>



<p>Over time, this dense material descended into the moon's depths, mingling with the mantle, melting, and eventually resurfacing as the titanium-rich lava flows observed today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-moon-turned-itself-inside-out-nbsp">The moon turned itself inside out&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Our moon literally turned itself inside out," said co-author Jeff Andrews-Hanna, an associate professor at LPL. "But there has been little physical evidence to shed light on the exact sequence of events during this critical phase of lunar history, and there is a lot of disagreement in the details of what went down – literally."</p>



<p>The study explores various hypotheses regarding how and when this material sank, whether gradually or all at once, whether it moved globally before surfacing on the near side, and whether it descended in one large mass or several smaller ones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geologic-evolution-of-the-moon">Geologic evolution of the moon</h2>



<p>"Without evidence, you can pick your favorite model. Each model holds profound implications for the geologic evolution of our moon," said co-lead author Adrien Broquet, a planetary geologist at the <a href="https://www.dlr.de/en">German Aerospace Center</a> in Berlin.</p>



<p>In an earlier study published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-021-00872-4"><em>Nature Geoscience</em></a>, scientists predicted that the dense layer of titanium-rich material beneath the crust first moved to the moon's near side - possibly due to a giant impact on the far side - then sunk into the interior in a cascading manner, leaving behind geometric patterns of dense material.</p>



<p>"When we saw those model predictions, it was like a light bulb went on, because we see the exact same pattern when we look at subtle variations in the moon’s gravity field, revealing a network of dense material lurking below the crust," said Andrews-Hanna.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remarkably-consistent-story-nbsp">Remarkably consistent story&nbsp;</h2>



<p>By comparing simulations with gravity anomalies detected by <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/grail/">NASA's GRAIL mission</a>, the authors confirmed the presence of ilmenite remnants below the crust. This is consistent with their simulations of the moon turning itself inside out.</p>



<p>"Our analyses show that the models and data are telling one remarkably consistent story," said Liang. "Ilmenite materials migrated to the near side and sunk into the interior in sheetlike cascades, leaving behind a vestige that causes anomalies in the moon's gravity field, as seen by GRAIL."</p>



<p>This investigation also sheds light on the timing of these events, suggesting the ilmenite-rich layer sank before the formation of the moon's oldest impact basins, hinting at its role in subsequent volcanic activity on the lunar surface.</p>



<p>"Analyzing these variations in the moon's gravity field allowed us to peek under the moon's surface and see what lies beneath," Broquet added, highlighting the study's ability to bridge model predictions with physical evidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-layers-to-a-complex-narrative-nbsp">Additional layers to a complex narrative&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The identification of anomalies in the moon's gravitational field not only substantiates the descent of a dense layer into the lunar depths but also enables a finer determination of the timing and mechanics of this phenomenon. Moreover, the moon's surface characteristics introduce additional layers of complexity to this narrative.</p>



<p>"The moon is fundamentally lopsided in every respect," Andrews-Hanna said, highlighting the disparities between the moon's near side, which faces Earth - particularly the darker Oceanus Procellarum area - and its far side. </p>



<p>The near side is characterized by a lower elevation, a thinner crust, extensive lava flows, and elevated levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-can-help-sustainably-extract-rare-earth-elements/">rare elements</a> such as titanium and thorium, contrasting sharply with the far side's features. </p>



<p>The reorganization of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timeless-mystery-solved-scientists-uncover-what-is-inside-the-moons-core/">lunar mantle</a> is believed to be intricately linked to the distinct structure and historical dynamics of the Oceanus Procellarum region, a topic that has sparked significant scientific discourse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-geophysical-evidence-nbsp">First geophysical evidence&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Our work connects the dots between the geophysical evidence for the interior structure of the moon and computer models of its evolution," Liang further explained.</p>



<p>"For the first time we have physical evidence showing us what was happening in the moon’s interior during this critical stage in its evolution, and that's really exciting," Andrews-Hanna added. </p>



<p>"It turns out that the moon’s earliest history is written below the surface, and it just took the right combination of models and data to unveil that story," he concluded.</p>



<p>The vestiges of early lunar evolution are present below the crust today, which is mesmerizing. Broquet explained, "Future missions, such as with a seismic network, would allow a better investigation of the geometry of these structures."</p>



<p>Liang concluded by noting, "When the Artemis astronauts eventually land on the moon to begin a new era of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-plans-to-build-house-on-the-moon-by-2040/">human exploration</a>, we will have a very different understanding of our neighbor than we did when the Apollo astronauts first set foot on it."</p>

<p>"Forever chemicals", or PFAS, are the subject of a pivotal study by Stockholm University's Department of Environmental Science. This research uncovers a neglected route through which PFAS cycle back to land from the ocean.</p>



<p>It challenges the common belief, showing PFAS do not simply dilute in the ocean but follow a cyclical journey.</p>



<p>The study reveals that ocean waves launch these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/creators-of-forever-chemicals-covered-up-the-toxic-dangers-for-decades/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">toxic substances</a> into the air, where they then settle back onto land, posing potential risks to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-pfas-forever-chemicals-released-by-dupont-and-chemours-caused-significant-harm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human health</a> and the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-a-persistent-threat">PFAS: a persistent threat</h2>



<p>PFAS, short for Per- and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/skiers-are-spreading-pfas-forever-chemicals-around-the-worlds-mountains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polyfluoroalkyl Substances</a>, represent a vast group of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/not-so-green-hidden-chemicals-found-in-paper-straws/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">synthetic chemicals</a>.</p>



<p>Due to their ability to resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water, PFAS are prevalent in many products. This includes non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, certain firefighting foams, and various grease-, water-, and oil-resistant items.</p>



<p>However, PFAS have earned the moniker "forever chemicals" for their durability and tendency to persist in the environment and accumulate over time.</p>



<p>Such persistence, evident in both the environment and living organisms, has sparked health concerns. Specifically, potential risks associated with PFAS exposure include an increased likelihood of cancer, hormone disruption, and adverse effects on the immune system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-research-at-ocean">PFAS research at ocean</h2>



<p>The research team undertook extensive field experiments across the Atlantic Ocean. This team included Bo Sha, a post-doctoral researcher, and Jana Johansson, a former researcher at the Department who is now at <a href="https://liu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Linköping University</a>.</p>



<p>Their innovative approach featured a custom-built sea spray simulator aboard a research vessel. Over two months, they conducted multiple experiments using this setup.</p>



<p>Subsequently, the startling results showed that air particle concentrations of PFAS exceeded those in seawater by over 100,000 times, highlighting ocean spray's efficiency in reintroducing these chemicals into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-boomerang-effect-on-land-and-ocean">PFAS 'boomerang effect on land and ocean</h2>



<p>Ian Cousins, a professor at the <a href="https://www.su.se/department-of-environmental-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Environmental Science</a> and a co-author of the study, emphasized the significance of their findings.</p>



<p>"Contrary to the common belief that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/banning-forever-chemicals-may-threaten-us-national-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS</a> are merely washed away from the land into the ocean, our research shows that there's a 'boomerang effect.' Some of these chemicals are re-emitted into the air, transported over long distances, and then deposited back onto land," Cousins explained. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-concerning-discovery">A concerning discovery</h2>



<p>Bo Sha noted the dual nature of their research. She states, "Our findings, while scientifically impactful, are also disconcerting."</p>



<p>Furthermore, the study not only contributes to the scientific understanding of PFAS distribution. In essence, this also sparks concern among scientists, regulators, and the general public, given the widespread presence and persistence of these chemicals.</p>

<p>Matthew Salter, a co-author and researcher at the Department of Environmental Science, highlighted supporting evidence from Denmark. There, scientists pinpoint the sea along the west coast as a primary PFAS source.</p>



<p>Salter remarked, "This aligns with our expectations, as our study predicts that coastal regions are the most impacted." He underlined the global significance of their findings.</p>



<p>Thus, Stockholm University's study represents a critical advancement in understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pfas-crisis-humans-are-early-warning-system-for-wildlife-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS pollution</a> in the ocean. <p>One of their most potent tools in this endeavor is the observation of eclipses, or more specifically, transits.</p>



<p>It is crucial to remember that planets do not intrinsically emit light. Instead, they reflect the light of the stars they orbit. </p>



<p>When an exoplanet passes directly between its host star and our line of sight, it causes a slight but detectable decrease in the observed starlight. This phenomenon is known as a transit.</p>



<p>Telescopes such as <a href="https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/tess/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA's TESS</a> (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) are specifically designed to identify and measure these subtle fluctuations in starlight. </p>



<p>By analyzing these transit events, astronomers can derive valuable information about distant exoplanets.</p>



<p>"A solar eclipse is a huge transit," explains Dr. Allison Youngblood, a TESS scientist at NASA.</p>

<p>Fun fact: We're incredibly lucky to witness total solar eclipses as we do on Earth. Our moon is the perfect size, at the perfect distance, to completely mask the sun. </p>



<p>"A solar eclipse is the pinnacle of being lucky," says Dr. Tripathi, an eclipse expert. "We're at this perfect time and place in the universe to be able to witness such a perfect phenomenon."</p>



<p>"An Earth-like transit in front of stars is equivalent to a mosquito walking in front of a headlight," noted David Ciardi, chief scientist at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>. "That's how little light is blocked." </p>



<p>But this won't last forever. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moon-is-shrinking-moonquakes-potential-problems-for-astronauts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a> is slowly drifting away, and eventually, it won't fully block the sun anymore. </p>

<p>When Marcus Jones and his business partner, Akunna Olumba, decided to establish a pizzeria in Detroit, their vision was clear: to integrate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-technology-is-urgently-needed-to-save-the-climate/">sustainable technologies</a>, including solar panels, a high-efficiency tankless water heater, and a stormwater collection system on the roof. However, when they approached traditional banks to finance their clean energy projects, they encountered skepticism. </p>



<p>"The lenders thought we were crazy,” Jones said. The banks were hesitant to fund such green initiatives, doubting their financial viability due to a lack of precedent in lending for clean energy projects or efficiency upgrades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainability-in-business-operations">Sustainability in business operations</h2>



<p>Faced with this challenge, Jones and Olumba turned to a specialized financial institution, a green bank, designed to support projects aimed at reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-biodiversity-wildlife-habitats-delicate-balancing-act/">environmental impact</a>. This decision placed them at the forefront of a burgeoning movement that prioritizes sustainability in business operations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This movement is set to receive a significant boost, with the Biden administration announcing a $20 billion investment, which Vice President Kamala Harris has described as “the largest investment in financing for community-based climate projects in our nation’s history.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clean-energy-grants">Clean energy grants</h2>



<p>This groundbreaking initiative by the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA) aims to distribute grants, varying from $500 million to $6.9 billion, to eight non-profit organizations. These funds are earmarked for projects that advance clean energy solutions, especially in underprivileged communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scope of these projects ranges from assisting families in acquiring electric induction stoves to constructing energy-efficient housing for low-income residents.</p>



<p>“We’re putting an unprecedented $20 billion to work in communities that for too long have been shut out of resources to lower costs and benefit from clean technology solutions,” explained EPA administrator Michael S. Regan.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critics-of-the-initiative-nbsp">Critics of the initiative&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Yet, this initiative has not been without its critics. Republicans have condemned the funding as a “greendoggle,” questioning EPA's capability to manage a program of this magnitude. </p>



<p>Despite these criticisms and attempts to repeal the program, the administration is pressing forward, with hopes that the initiative will leverage an additional $150 billion in private capital. </p>



<p>This ambitious goal reflects a belief that federal dollars can act as a catalyst, drawing private investment into the clean energy sector at a ratio of about $7 for every federal dollar spent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grants-intended-to-reduce-carbon-emissions">Grants intended to reduce carbon emissions</h2>



<p>The grants are part of the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/cleanenergy/inflation-reduction-act-guidebook/">Inflation Reduction Act</a>, a cornerstone of President Biden’s climate policy, which allocated $27 billion to what is known as the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/greenhouse-gas-reduction-fund">Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund</a>. </p>



<p>Among the largest recipients of this funding are the <a href="https://weareclimateunited.org/">Climate United Fund</a> and the <a href="https://coalitionforgreencapital.com/">Coalition for Green Capital</a>, with grants intended to reduce carbon emissions significantly over the next seven years.</p>



<p>The concept of a green bank is not new, having been proposed over two decades ago as a means to drive private investment into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-utilities-may-be-100-percent-renewable-energy-by-2060/">renewable energy</a> projects and other environmental initiatives. </p>



<p>However, EPA's approach diversifies this concept by distributing funds across various nonprofit groups, allowing them to function as lenders for community-focused projects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-income-communities-and-clean-energy">Low-income communities and clean energy</h2>



<p>Senator Chris Van Hollen, an early advocate for a national green bank, highlighted the importance of this funding in enabling low-income communities to participate in the clean energy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-transition-may-boost-job-opportunities-in-the-u-s/">transition</a>. He pointed out that federal tax incentives for clean energy technologies often remain out of reach for individuals lacking the upfront capital for such investments.</p>



<p>Examples of the program’s potential impact are already visible in communities like De Soto, Georgia, where non-profit organizations have facilitated home appliance upgrades and energy-efficiency improvements for families. Mildred Carter, a beneficiary of such a program, shared her relief at receiving a grant for a new electric heat pump after her water heater failed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-model-for-community-level-clean-energy-financing">New model for community-level clean energy financing</h2>



<p>In Detroit, the success story of Detroit Pizza Bar, supported by a green loan for its sustainable technologies, underscores the tangible benefits of green financing for small businesses. </p>



<p>Jones noted that while customers might not initially notice the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-solar-panels-appealing/">solar panels</a> or rain barrels, the restaurant's commitment to sustainability is a point of pride and distinction.</p>



<p>As the Biden administration moves to announce these awards, the initiative represents a significant step toward inclusive, sustainable development, offering a new model for community-level clean energy financing. </p>



<p>Through such efforts, the administration aims to ensure that the benefits of clean technology are accessible to all, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and equitable future.</p>

<p>However, these vital ecosystems are currently facing unparalleled threats. The combined pressures of climate change, disease, and various stressors have contributed to their consistent decline.</p>



<p>In response to this crisis, researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (<a href="https://www.whoi.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHOI</a>) have embarked on a remarkable study. The experts have turned their attention to an unexpected ally for real-time monitoring of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seaweed-can-mislead-scientists-about-reef-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reef health</a>: the microbes inhabiting these aquatic environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-role-in-coral-reef-survival">Microbes role in coral reef survival</h2>



<p>Cynthia Becker, a recent graduate of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, led the research, which uncovers the critical role microbes play within <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fishing-levels-can-destroy-or-save-coral-reef-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral reef ecosystems</a>.</p>



<p>Microbes are essentially minuscule life forms that are invisible to the naked eye. They inhabit virtually every corner of our planet. This includes the air we breathe, the soil beneath our feet, the bodies of water that surround us, and even the internal recesses of our own bodies.</p>



<p>Within the intricate ecosystems of coral reefs, these microscopic organisms undertake the vital task of recycling organic substances and nutrients. The recycling process carried out by microbes goes beyond merely breaking down materials; it acts as a lifeline for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-some-corals-more-resilient-to-climate-change-than-others/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a>. This process provides corals with the essential nourishment they need to thrive.</p>



<p>Moreover, microbes lay the foundation for a diverse web of life that thrives on coral reefs. They support a vast array of species that depend on these vibrant underwater cities for survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbial-shifts-in-coral-reefs">Microbial shifts in coral reefs</h2>



<p>For seven years, the researchers closely studied microbial communities around eight reefs in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Their findings showed major changes in these communities due to hurricanes and disease outbreaks.</p>



<p>"Coral reefs have been declining for decades… It is important for us to monitor changes in coral reefs as they are happening, and the microbes in their environment can really help us do that,” said Becker. </p>



<p>The study documents the effects of major events, including hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. It also covers the onset of the stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak in 2020.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the research details the significant changes within the microbial community resulting from these disturbances. This includes a notable 34% decline in Prochlorococcus, a critical photosynthetic bacteria, illustrating the profound impact these events have on the ecosystem's microbial balance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microscopic-monitoring-with-edna">Microscopic monitoring with eDNA</h2>



<p>The research highlights a shift from traditional macro-level studies of coral reefs to a focus on the microscopic level. </p>



<p>"A lot of how we study coral reefs is done on a macroorganismal level. This makes it difficult to track the health of these vulnerable reefs in real time," explained study co-author Amy Apprill, a microbial ecologist at WHOI. </p>



<p>To bridge the gap, the team utilized environmental DNA (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/measure-coral-reef-health-water-samples/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eDNA</a>) techniques to examine microbial DNA, providing a noninvasive method for assessing reef health. This approach allows for almost instantaneous health evaluations of the reefs, offering a crucial advantage in conservation efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stages-in-edna">Stages in eDNA</h2>



<p>The technique starts with collecting water samples from the coral reefs, each containing approximately 1 million microbes per milliliter.</p>



<p>After collection, the microbial DNA within these samples is sequenced to analyze the present microbial communities.</p>



<p>Subsequently, this method provides a snapshot of the microbial community's composition, offering an insight into the reef's health in near real-time.</p>



<p>"Microbes are the hidden engines of coral reefs. By sampling the water, we can see the immediate impacts of disturbances and intervene to support the reefs before the situation potentially worsens,” noted Apprill.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-towards-a-future-of-healthy-reefs">Towards a future of healthy reefs</h2>



<p>Understanding the composition of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-bacteria-vital-to-coral-reef-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healthy reef</a> microbial community is crucial for assessing the overall health of the ecosystem.</p>



<p>Consequently, this knowledge can complement visual assessments, providing a fuller picture of a reef's condition and informing conservation strategies.</p>



<p>As the challenges facing these ecosystems intensify, the study offers a beacon of hope, leveraging the power of modern genomics to safeguard the future of our planet's coral reefs.</p>

<p>This phenomenon is not just a rare spectacle; it's a journey into the shadows that only a select portion of the Earth's surface, known as the "path of totality," gets to experience firsthand. </p>



<p>During this upcoming eclipse, the path of totality carves a route starting in Mexico, slicing through the heart of Texas, and continuing its arc northeastward to Maine. </p>



<p>Those situated within this narrow corridor are the fortunate audience to a dramatic display of nature's grandeur, where day briefly transforms into night, unveiling stars and planets against a darkened sky. The sun's corona - a fiery halo - becomes visible in a mesmerizing celestial show.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bird-navigation-during-total-solar-eclipse">Bird navigation during total solar eclipse</h2>



<p>Birds, with their unparalleled mastery of long-distance migration, have long fascinated scientists and nature enthusiasts alike. They possess an extraordinary array of navigational tools, a testament to nature's ingenuity. </p>

<p>This nocturnal strategy raises intriguing questions about how sudden environmental changes, such as the abrupt darkness of a total solar eclipse, might affect their intricate navigation systems. </p>



<p>Will the sudden darkness disorient them, or will they adapt seamlessly? The answers hold clues to their navigational abilities and the adaptability of wildlife amidst change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-2017-eclipse">The 2017 eclipse</h2>



<p>This isn't the first time researchers have studied the effects of a solar eclipse on wildlife. During the total eclipse of 2017, Cornell Lab of Ornithology scientists used weather radar to track how animals reacted. The results were intriguing.</p>



<p>"During the 2017 eclipse, we saw a decrease in flying insects, flying birds - but we didn't see anything like the typical pattern of movement when it gets dark at night," said Andrew Farnsworth, senior researcher at the <a href="https://www.birds.cornell.edu/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell Lab of Ornithology</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>
