<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>In recent times, the global climate has changed in unprecedented ways. We've seen extreme events such as intense hurricanes, prolonged droughts, record-breaking heatwaves and significant Arctic ice melt. Among these phenomena, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> has garnered significant attention.</p>



<p>This climate pattern, characterized by warm waters in the eastern Pacific, leads to hotter weather worldwide. It plays a key role in causing prolonged periods of heat and heavy precipitation.</p>



<p>Interestingly, as the latest El Niño event begins to wane, a study sheds light on an unexpected player in this complex climate system: the melting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-will-soon-vanish-during-the-summer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic sea ice</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-ice-melt-to-weaken-el-nino">Arctic ice melt to weaken El Niño</h2>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://en.nuist.edu.cn/mainm.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University at Albany</a> and the<a href="https://en.nuist.edu.cn/mainm.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology</a> in China have embarked on an exploratory journey. </p>



<p>Their study underscores a critical connection between the melting Arctic sea ice and the intensification of El Niño events. </p>



<p>Consequently, through a meticulous analysis involving climate model simulations and observational data, the study reveals a stark revelation. </p>



<p>The ongoing interaction between melting Arctic sea ice and the atmosphere plays a pivotal role - reducing the strength of El Niño events by up to 17 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-arctic-ice-melt-on-el-nino-events">Impact of Arctic ice melt on El Niño Events</h2>



<p>This discovery is particularly alarming given the rapid decline of Arctic sea ice, which has been decreasing by 12.2% per decade since the late 1970s. </p>



<p>With projections indicating the potential for the Arctic to experience its first ice-free summer by 2040, the implications are profound. This situation could significantly affect future El Niño events.</p>



<p>Aiguo Dai, a distinguished professor at UAlbany's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and co-author of the study, emphasizes the significance of these findings. </p>



<p>"Climate models are already projecting a strengthened El Niño in the upcoming decades due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>. Our study suggests that the current climate's sea ice-air interactions significantly dampen the amplitude of El Niño events, unveiling a new facet of Arctic sea ice's impact on our climate," said Professor Dai.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-arctic-ice-in-el-nino-dynamics">Role of Arctic ice in El Niño dynamics</h2>



<p>The research team embarked on an ambitious project, utilizing the Community Earth System Model from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (<a href="https://ncar.ucar.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCAR</a>) to simulate global climate conditions over 500 years. These simulations, hosted by the UAlbany Data Center, differed only in the Arctic's sea ice-air interactions.</p>



<p>The comparison between these simulations was revealing. It showed that the presence of sea ice-air interactions reduces El Niño-related variations in the tropical Pacific Ocean's climate by about 12 to 17%. </p>



<p>This reduction is attributed to the asymmetric impacts of positive and negative sea-ice anomalies on surface fluxes. Essentially, this refers to the exchange of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere.</p>



<p>Jiechun Deng is an associate professor at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology and the study's lead author.</p>



<p>"Our findings illuminate the critical role of sea ice-air interactions in regulating El Niño activity. This underscores the necessity for climate models to more accurately represent these interactions to better predict El Niño and its impacts in a warming world," said Professor Deng.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-climate-implications">Broader climate implications</h2>



<p>The study is part of a series of research efforts led by Professor Dai, focusing on the changing Arctic climate. Previous studies have explored the causes of Arctic amplification and how Arctic sea ice changes affect Atlantic temperatures. </p>



<p>"The main takeaway is that shrinking Arctic sea ice has many far-reaching climate impacts," said Professor Dai. "Understanding these consequences is crucial for grasping the full scope of global warming's impact on our planet."</p>



<p>Furthermore, adding to the body of knowledge, Dai's research echoes the findings of a 2022 study published in <em>Nature Communications</em>. This study predicted an increase in the frequency of strong <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasters-warn-of-weather-chaos-as-el-nino-arrives-early/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> events as a direct consequence of future Arctic sea ice loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



<p>The intricate relationship between Arctic sea ice loss and El Niño events presents a compelling facet of climate science. Moreover, it highlights the interconnectedness of our planet's climate systems.</p>



<p>As our understanding of these dynamics grows, the need to incorporate these interactions into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperature-increase-2023-blew-past-all-climate-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate models</a> becomes more evident. Only through comprehensive and accurate models can we hope to predict and mitigate the impacts of global warming. </p>

Now, an intriguing study has shed new light on the complex relationship between the gut <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-microbiome-trillions-of-bacteria-unique-like-your-fingerprint/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome</a> bacteria and obesity, revealing intriguing differences between men and women.</p>

<p>The study, led by Dr. Paula Aranaz from the <a href="https://en.unav.edu/web/research-center-for-nutrition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centre for Nutrition Research</a> at the University of Navarra in Spain, was presented at this year's European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Venice, Italy. </p>



<p>The research team analyzed metagenomic and metabolomic data from a Spanish population to understand how gut bacteria influence the development of obesity.</p>

<p>Disruption in this delicate balance, known as dysbiosis, can significantly impact the risk of certain diseases, including obesity. </p>



<p>However, the specific species that contribute to or protect against obesity, and their impact on metabolic health, have remained elusive until now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-gut-bacteria-obesity-connection">Unraveling the gut bacteria-obesity connection</h2>



<p>To unravel the gut-obesity connection, the researchers examined the fecal metabolome -- a diverse collection of small molecules produced by gut bacteria as a byproduct of metabolizing food. These metabolites make their way into the bloodstream, influencing overall health.</p>



<p>The study included 361 adult volunteers (251 women and 110 men) from the Spanish Obekit study, a randomized trial examining the relationship between genetic variants and the response to a hypocaloric diet. </p>



<p>Participants were classified according to their obesity (OB) index, based on factors such as BMI, fat mass percentage, and waist circumference.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-christensenella-minuta-potential-ally-in-the-obesity-fight"><em>Christensenella minuta</em>: Potential ally in the obesity fight</h2>



<p>The analysis revealed that individuals with a high OB index had significantly lower levels of <em>Christensenella minuta</em>, a bacterium consistently linked to leanness and health. </p>



<p>This finding suggests that <em>Christensenella minuta</em> may play a protective role against obesity.</p>



<p>"Gut <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mothers-hardships-are-reflected-in-their-childs-gut-microbiome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome composition</a>, specifically higher levels of the <em>Christensenella minuta</em> bacterium, appeared to protect against obesity," explains Dr. Aranaz.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gender-differences-in-obesity-associated-gut-bacteria">Gender differences in obesity-associated gut bacteria</h2>



<p>Intriguingly, the study also uncovered gender-specific differences in the gut bacteria associated with obesity. </p>



<p>In men, greater abundance of <em>Parabacteroides helcogenes</em> and <em>Campylobacter canadensis</em> species was strongly associated with higher BMI, fat mass, and waist circumference. </p>



<p>In contrast, three Prevotella species -- <em>Prevotella micans</em>, <em>Prevotella brevis</em>, and <em>Prevotella sacharolitica</em> -- were highly predictive of these obesity markers in women, but not in men.</p>



<p>"The species that influence the risk of developing obesity appear to be different between the sexes and interventions to help prevent an obesity-favorable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/walnuts-improve-heart-health-by-altering-the-gut-microbiome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome</a> may need to be different in men and women," notes Dr. Aranaz.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-link-between-gut-bacteria-and-metabolic-disease">Link between gut bacteria and metabolic disease</h2>



<p>Further metabolomic analyses revealed variations in the abundance of certain metabolites, particularly bioactive lipids such as phospholipids and sphingolipids, in participants with a high OB index. </p>



<p>These lipids have been implicated in the development of metabolic diseases, including diabetes and vascular complications.</p>



<p>Dr. Aranaz emphasizes the significance of these findings, noting, "Our findings reveal how an imbalance in distinct bacterial groups are likely to play an important role in the onset and development of obesity, with considerable differences between the sexes, which might affect the metabolism of different bioactive molecules present in the metabolome that influence the development of metabolic disease."</p>

<p>The study demonstrates the power of combining metagenomics and metabolomics to study the mechanisms involved in the development of metabolic diseases like obesity. </p>

<p>"We hope that this study demonstrates that using metagenomics in combination with metabolomics enables researchers to study the mechanisms involved in the development of metabolic diseases such as obesity with a high degree of confidence," said Dr. Aranaz. </p>



<p>"This novel, broader approach could help to develop nutritional precision strategies for weight loss that modify the presence of specific bacteria strains, or the levels of bioactive molecules," he concluded.</p>

<p>“Our goal was to develop something cost-effective and versatile, so anyone – from governments to individual beekeepers – could use it,” said Thomas O’Shea-Wheller, an expert in collective behavior and sociobiology at Exeter. “This study tested a prototype version, and the results were encouraging. VespAI shows promise as a robust early warning system to detect Asian hornet ingressions into new regions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accurate-surveillance-capabilities-nbsp">Accurate surveillance capabilities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>VespAI operates on a compact processor, activating only when detecting an insect of hornet-size dimensions. Its AI algorithm then assesses whether the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honey-bees-use-a-contagious-warning-signal-to-scare-off-hornets/">insect</a> is an invasive Asian hornet or the native European variety. Upon identifying an Asian hornet, the system issues an image alert for user verification.</p>



<p>“Unfortunately, the majority of reports submitted are misidentified native species, meaning that the responsible agencies have to manually validate thousands of images every year – our system thus aims to provide a vigilant, accurate, and automated surveillance capability to remediate this,” said Peter Kennedy, a behavioral ecologist at Exeter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traditional-detection-methods">Traditional detection methods</h2>



<p>Moreover, traditional detection methods in Europe often involve traps that indiscriminately kill many native insects without significantly affecting Asian hornet populations. VespAI stands out by sparing non-target insects, facilitating the live capture of hornets for nest tracking. Kennedy highlighted the environmental and operational benefits of this approach:&nbsp;</p>



<p>“VespAI does not kill non-target insects, and thus eliminates the environmental impact of trapping, while ensuring that live hornets can be caught and tracked back to the nest, which is the only effective way to destroy them.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reliable-detection-algorithm-nbsp">Reliable detection algorithm&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The device underwent rigorous testing on the island of Jersey, close to France, a hot spot for Asian hornet incursions. Despite being exposed to a mix of Asian and European hornets, as well as other insects, VespAI's detection algorithm accurately differentiated among them.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“That’s the benefit of our system – its high accuracy means that it won’t wrongly identify other species, or miss any Asian hornets that visit,” said O’Shea-Wheller.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-powerful-tool-for-asian-hornet-detection">Powerful tool for Asian hornet detection</h2>



<p>Plans are in place to deploy additional prototypes in partnership with various UK organizations, aiming to strengthen defense against the rising Asian hornet threat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The proposed device may prove a powerful tool in the early determination of the presence of Asian hornets in an area, and thereby fills an important gap,” concluded Alistair Christie, a Senior Scientific Officer for Invasive Species in Jersey.</p>

<p>Located at the back of our brain beneath the larger cerebrum, the cerebellum - often dubbed the "little brain" despite containing over half of the brain’s neurons - plays a vital role in coordinating our movements and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/">learning</a> from our experiences.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is well known that the cerebellum refines our actions based on sensory feedback and past mistakes, the specific mechanics behind this learning have remained somewhat elusive.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-of-zombie-neurons-nbsp">Discovery of zombie neurons&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Recently, a study by researchers at the <a href="https://www.fchampalimaud.org/">Champalimaud Foundation</a> has shed light on this mystery with the discovery of "zombie neurons."&nbsp;</p>



<p>These neurons, though alive, have undergone functional changes that significantly advance our understanding of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/cerebellum/">cerebellum</a>'s role in learning processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sensory-cues-and-motor-actions">Sensory cues and motor actions</h2>



<p>The cerebellum is crucial not just for enabling us to execute daily activities with precision, such as navigating crowded spaces or playing sports, but also for how we learn to associate sensory cues with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lack-of-sleep-leads-to-risky-decision-making/">motor actions</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Every time we adjust our grip to prevent a drink from spilling, adjusting for the weight of the container and its contents, we're experiencing the cerebellum's capability to connect visual signals to motor responses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teaching-signals-in-the-brain-nbsp">Teaching signals in the brain&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Learning involves the cerebellum's constant evaluation of external stimuli and the outcomes of our actions, using information about errors to fine-tune neural connections. This adjustment leads to changes in how we respond to specific cues over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The nature of these "error" or "teaching signals" within the brain and their role in driving behavioral changes have already been subjects of extensive research. This latest study provides compelling evidence that activity in a particular class of cerebellar inputs, known as climbing fibers, is crucial for associative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-brain-is-constantly-working-to-learn-from-our-mistakes/">learning</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-experiment-with-mice">Study experiment with mice</h2>



<p>To investigate the role of climbing fibers and their targets, cerebellar Purkinje cells, in learning, the researchers conducted an experiment involving mice.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They used a common learning task known as eyeblink conditioning. In this task, a mouse learns to blink in response to a specific signal, such as a light, that precedes an event, usually a gentle puff of air directed at its eye. The animals then demonstrate associative learning, linking a sensory signal with an adaptive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-control-movement-limbs/">movement</a> response, in this case, blinking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remote-control-for-brain-cells">Remote control for brain cells</h2>



<p>"In our experiment, we used a technique called optogenetics. This method functions like a highly precise remote control for brain cells, using light to turn on or off certain cells of interest at extremely specific times,” explained lead author Tatiana Silva, a research fellow in neurosciences at Champalimaud.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Climbing fibers normally respond to sensory stimuli like a puff of air to the eye. By precisely activating these fibers with optogenetics, we were able to trick the mouse into thinking it had received an air puff, when in fact it had not. After we consistently stimulated climbing fibers during the presentation of a visual cue, the mice learned to blink in response to that cue - even in the absence of stimulation. This proved that these fibers are sufficient to drive this type of associative learning."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climbing-fibers-are-necessary-for-associative-learning">Climbing fibers are necessary for associative learning</h2>



<p>The researchers managed to demonstrate that climbing fibers are also <em>necessary</em> for associative learning. “When we used optogenetics to selectively silence climbing fibers during the presentation of an actual air puff, the mice completely failed to learn to blink in response to the visual cue,” Silva said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team manipulated various other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/">types</a> of brain cells within the cerebellum but found none could provide such reliable teaching signals for learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adjusting-specific-activity-patterns-in-targeted-brain-cells">Adjusting specific activity patterns in targeted brain cells</h2>



<p>Delving deeper into their data, the research team encountered an unexpected twist. To control climbing fiber activity via optogenetics, they introduced a light-sensitive protein known as Channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) into these specific neurons. </p>



<p>However, they observed that the mice engineered to express ChR2 failed to learn using the conventional air puff technique. </p>



<p>"It turned out that introducing ChR2 into the climbing fibers altered their natural properties, preventing them from responding appropriately to standard sensory stimuli like air puffs. This, in turn, completely blocked the animals' ability to learn," said senior author Megan Carey, a group leader in the Neuroscience Program at Champalimaud.</p>



<p>"The remarkable thing was that these same mice learned perfectly well when we paired climbing fiber activation with a visual cue rather than an air puff," added Silva. </p>



<p>This accidental discovery realized a long-sought goal within neuroscience: adjusting specific activity patterns in targeted neurons without completely halting their communication. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climbing-fibers-as-zombie-neurons-nbsp">Climbing fibers as zombie neurons&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This method offers a refined approach to probe their direct impact. Despite the climbing fibers being spontaneously active and ostensibly normal, their changed response to sensory input prevented the animals from learning the task, prompting Silva to term them zombie neurons: alive in function but detached from their usual role in brain circuits.</p>



<p>"These results serve as the most compelling evidence to date that climbing fiber signals are essential for cerebellar associative learning. Our next steps involve understanding why ChR2 expression leads to the 'zombification' of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neurons-can-predict-human-speech-before-we-say-a-word/">neurons</a> and determining whether our findings extend to other forms of cerebellar learning," Carey concluded.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have an innate advantage in certain settings where response time is crucial, such as in ball sports or competitive gaming? Recent research suggests that the answer may lie in our visual perception and the way our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-we-see-the-world-based-on-what-we-expect-to-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brains process</a> what our eyes see.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-differences-in-temporal-resolution">Discovering differences in temporal resolution</h2>



<p>Researchers from <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trinity College Dublin</a> have made a fascinating discovery about perception and the way individuals process visual signals. </p>



<p>Using a blink-and-you'll-miss-it experiment, they found that there is considerable variation among people in their temporal resolution, meaning some people effectively see more "images per second" than others.</p>



<p>Clinton Haarlem, a PhD Candidate in the School of Natural Sciences and the first author of the study, explained, "We also measured <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nature-experiences-alter-time-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temporal</a> resolution on multiple occasions in the same participants and found that even though there is significant variation among individuals, the trait appears to be quite stable over time within individuals."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-visual-perception-and-temporal-resolution">Measuring visual perception and temporal resolution</h2>



<p>To quantify temporal resolution, the scientists used the "critical flicker fusion threshold," a measure for the maximum frequency at which an individual can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-masking-your-brain-can-see-things-without-your-knowledge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perceive</a> a flickering light source. </p>



<p>If the light source flickers above a person's threshold, they will not be able to see that it is flickering and instead see the light as steady.</p>



<p>The results of the experiment were striking. Some participants indicated they saw the light as completely still when it was in fact flashing about 35 times per second, while others were still able to perceive the flashing at rates of over 60 times per second.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-high-speed-situations">Implications for high-speed situations</h2>



<p>While the researchers don't yet know how this variation in visual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-rate-influences-our-perception-of-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temporal</a> resolution might affect our day-to-day lives, they believe that individual differences in perception speed might become apparent in high-speed situations. </p>



<p>Examples include scenarios where one might need to locate or track fast-moving objects, such as in ball sports, or in situations where visual scenes change rapidly, such as in competitive gaming.</p>



<p>"This suggests that some people may have an advantage over others before they have even picked up a racquet and hit a tennis ball, or grabbed a controller and jumped into some fantasy world online," added Clinton Haarlem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding visual perception</h2>



<p>Professor Andrew Jackson from Trinity's School of Natural Sciences emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the project. </p>



<p>"What I think is really interesting about this project is how a zoologist, a geneticist and a psychologist can all find different angles to this work," Jackson explained. </p>



<p>"As a zoologist, I believe the consequences of variation in visual perception likely have profound implications for how predators and prey interact, with various arms-races existing for investment in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-changes-with-our-walking-rhythm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain processing</a> power and clever strategies to exploit weaknesses in one's enemy," he concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Challenging our assumptions about perception</h2>



<p>Associate Professor Kevin Mitchell from Trinity's School of Genetics and Microbiology and the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience was a participant in the study. </p>



<p>"Because we only have access to our own subjective experience, we might naively expect that everyone else <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-sensory-perception-brain-fascinating-interplay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perceives the world</a> in the same way we do. Examples like color blindness show that isn't always true, but there are many less well known ways that perception can vary too," Mitchell noted. </p>



<p>"This study characterizes one such difference – in the 'frame rate' of our visual systems. Some people really do seem to see the world faster than others," he concluded.</p>

Recent findings by researchers from the <a href="https://www.broadinstitute.org/">Broad Institute</a> of MIT and Harvard, in collaboration with <a href="https://www.massgeneral.org/">Massachusetts General Hospital</a>, have shed light on the gut microbiome's influence on cardiovascular disease. </p>



<p>The study reveals that certain gut bacteria metabolize cholesterol, potentially reducing cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease.</p>

<p>The researchers discovered that the <em>Oscillibacter</em> bacteria absorb and metabolize cholesterol from their environment, leading to lower cholesterol levels in individuals with higher concentrations of these bacteria in their gut.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the experts uncovered the specific mechanism such bacteria likely utilize to decompose <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapes-lower-bad-cholesterol-and-protect-heart-health/">cholesterol</a>. The findings suggest the potential for microbiome-targeted interventions to reduce cholesterol levels in the future and pave the way for more focused research on microbiome alterations and health.</p>



<p>Ramnik Xavier is a core institute member at the Broad Institute, director of the Immunology Program, co-director of the Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program, and a professor at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.</p>



<p>"Our research integrates findings from human subjects with experimental validation to ensure we achieve actionable mechanistic insight that will serve as starting points to improve cardiovascular health," said Xavier.</p>

<p>Utilizing shotgun metagenomic sequencing to profile microbial DNA in stool samples from the Framingham Heart Study, combined with metabolomics to measure various metabolites, the team identified over 16,000 microbe-metabolite associations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A notable finding was that individuals with several <em>Oscillibacter</em> species had lower <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-can-work-as-well-as-medication-to-lower-cholesterol/">cholesterol</a> levels. These bacteria were found to be surprisingly common, averaging one in every 100 gut bacteria.</p>

<p>The challenge then was to identify how these microbes metabolize cholesterol. Thanks to a unique library of bacteria collected from stool samples, including <em>Oscillibacter</em>, the team was able to cultivate these organisms and use mass spectrometry to pinpoint cholesterol metabolism byproducts, revealing the bacteria’s cholesterol-lowering pathways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They also explored another bacterial species, <em>Eubacterium coprostanoligenes</em>, known for its cholesterol metabolism contributions, uncovering its potential synergistic effects with <em>Oscillibacter</em> on cholesterol levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeted-therapeutic-strategies-may-be-possible-nbsp">Targeted therapeutic strategies may be possible&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research underscores the untapped potential of the gut microbiome, with many genes yet to be characterized. By focusing on specific bacteria and genes, the team hopes to achieve a systematic understanding of gut ecology and develop targeted therapeutic strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The work not only contributes to the understanding of microbial influence on cholesterol metabolism but also opens the door to discovering new metabolic pathways influenced by the gut microbiome, moving closer to a mechanistic understanding of microbe-host interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potentially-many-new-discoveries-to-be-made">Potentially many new discoveries to be made</h2>



<p>“There are many clinical studies trying to do fecal microbiome transfer studies without much understanding of how the microbes interact with each other and the gut,” said study co-first author Chenhao Li, a postdoctoral fellow at the Broad Institute.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Hopefully stepping back by focusing on one particular bug or gene first, we’ll get a systematic understanding of gut ecology and come up with better therapeutic strategies like targeting one or a few bugs.”</p>



<p>“Because of the large number of genes of unknown function in the gut microbiome, there are gaps in our ability to predict metabolic functions. Our work highlights the possibility that additional sterol metabolism pathways may be modified by gut microbes. There are potentially a lot of new discoveries to be made that will bring us closer to a mechanistic understanding of how microbes interact with the host,” he concluded.</p>

But recent research has revealed that seagulls are remarkably intelligent, and there's much more to these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/save-food-seagulls/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pesky birds</a> than meets the eye. Turns out, those "criminal" acts might just be signs of incredible intelligence and adaptability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-are-intelligent-seagulls-flocking-to-our-cities">Why are intelligent seagulls flocking to our cities?</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wing-technique-gulls-drones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seagulls</a> aren't moving inland just for a change of scenery. Prof. Paul Graham of the <a href="https://www.sussex.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sussex</a> explains it's a matter of survival. </p>



<p>Shrinking natural habitats, threats like avian flu, and dwindling fish stocks are forcing them to seek out new sources of food. Our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/which-traits-help-birds-thrive-in-urban-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cities</a>, with overflowing trash cans and discarded snacks, provide a tempting alternative.</p>



<p>"When we see behaviors we think of as mischievous or criminal - almost, we're seeing a really clever <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-birds-dream-of-flying-scientists-say-they-now-know-the-answer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> implementing very intelligent behavior," said Prof Graham. "I think we need to learn how to live with them."</p>

<p>Don't be fooled by a gull's clumsy appearance! Prof. Graham explains they're capable of sophisticated learning. </p>



<p>Herring gulls can watch their older peers, figuring out how to identify and obtain food in an urban setting. Over time, they develop clever tactics to liberate food from our bins or right out of our hands.</p>



<p>"They learn about which items that are discarded might be food and they've probably learned that by observing older birds," explains Prof. Graham.</p>



<p>So, the next time you see a gull brazenly pinching your hot dog, give it begrudging respect – that's a resourceful survivor taking advantage of its environment.</p>

Gull populations across the UK are seriously <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-most-endangered-seabirds-are-also-threatened-by-plastic-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">declining</a>. </p>



<p>All six of the main gull species are considered to be under threat. In the case of the herring gull, numbers are so low they're on the conservation red list.</p>



<p>"I don't think people realise that the numbers, especially of our breeding gulls, have been declining," stressed Dawn Balmer of the <a href="https://www.bto.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Trust for Ornithology</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-personal-accountability">Personal accountability</h3>



<p>We must take responsibility for how we dispose of our waste, particularly food scraps. Avoid creating unintentional "outdoor buffets" by ensuring that food waste is always properly discarded in secure containers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foster-awareness-nbsp">Foster awareness&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Public education campaigns can raise awareness about how our actions impact local wildlife, including gulls. By emphasizing the importance of not feeding gulls and properly securing trash, we can promote respectful cohabitation.</p>

Seagulls are much more intelligent than most people think

<p>Researchers led by the <a href="https://chinese.tjut.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tianjin University of Technology</a> have recently developed an implantable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-recover-energy-from-discarded-batteries/">battery</a> that operates on the body's own oxygen, a novel approach that could revolutionize the powering of medical devices such as pacemakers and neurostimulators.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, conducted on rats, demonstrates the battery's potential for stable power delivery and biological compatibility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-body-as-a-continuous-energy-source">The body as a continuous energy source</h2>



<p>"Implantable electronics have transformed disease diagnostics, therapies, wound healing, and health monitoring," wrote the researchers. "The reliable operation of these devices depends on the performance of implantable batteries that possess good bio-compatibility and sufficient capacity."</p>



<p>"Conventional batteries, such as Li-I2 and Ag-Zn batteries, are sealed and utilized for powering implantable devices. However, their capacities are restricted by the mass of active Li/I2 or Ag/Zn embedded in the batteries, which limits their service life."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Living organisms contain a wealth of basic components that can be used as continuous energy sources for batteries, including dissolved oxygen, glucose, enzymes, and sweat."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implantable-battery-interacts-with-oxygen-in-the-body">Implantable battery interacts with oxygen in the body</h2>



<p>“When you think about it, oxygen is the source of our life. If we can leverage the continuous supply of oxygen in the body, battery life won’t be limited by the finite materials within conventional batteries,” said corresponding author Xizheng Liu, an expert in energy materials and devices at Tianjin University.</p>



<p>The battery's electrodes, made from a sodium-based alloy and nanoporous gold, interact chemically with bodily <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-less-oxygen-could-extend-your-lifespan-by-50-or-more/">oxygen</a> to generate electricity. To ensure safety and flexibility, the battery is encased in a porous polymer film.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-implantable-battery">Testing the Implantable battery</h2>



<p>Implanted under the skin of rats, the battery maintained voltages between 1.3 V and 1.4 V, achieving a power density of 2.6 µW/cm^2 over two weeks. While currently not powerful enough for medical devices, this demonstrates the feasibility of using internal oxygen for energy generation.</p>



<p>The research team found no significant inflammation in the rats. The battery's byproducts, including sodium and hydroxide ions and a minimal amount of hydrogen peroxide, were effectively processed by the body, causing no harm to the kidneys or liver.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the implantation site showed complete hair regrowth and blood vessel regeneration around the battery after four weeks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implantable-battery-and-wound-healing-nbsp">Implantable battery and wound healing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“We were puzzled by the unstable electricity output right after implantation. It turned out we had to give the wound time to heal, for blood vessels to regenerate around the battery and supply oxygen, before the battery could provide stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-generate-electricity/">electricity</a>. This is a surprising and interesting finding because it means that the battery can help monitor wound healing,” Liu explained.</p>



<p>Currently, the scientists aim to enhance the battery's energy output by investigating more efficient materials and optimizing its structure. According to Liu, this battery also has significant potential for scaling and cost-effectiveness.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-revolution-in-the-field-of-implantable-devices">New revolution in the field of implantable devices</h2>



<p>"The O2 concentration in the present battery can be controlled precisely and thus has the potential of therapeutic capabilities against diseases caused by oxygen aggregation or pathogenic bacteria," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The catalysts in cathode of Na-O2 battery can also reduce the super-oxide radicals that cause cellular senescence and dementia, highlighting its potential applications in these fields."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"While several fundamental studies and intrinsic challenges remain to be tackled, the Na-O2 battery is still highly promising and can spark a new revolution in the field of implantable devices, leading to the development of new methods for the treatment of various diseases."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-medical-applications">Potential medical applications</h2>

<p>“Because tumor cells are sensitive to oxygen levels, implanting this oxygen-consuming battery around it may help starve cancers. It’s also possible to convert the battery energy to heat to kill cancer cells. From a new energy source to potential biotherapies, the prospects for this battery are exciting,” Liu concluded.</p>

<p>This profound isolation acted as a natural barrier for countless years, shielding the island from the introduction of many <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/invasive-species-plants-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potentially invasive</a> species.</p>



<p>However, this isolation was breached with the arrival of humans. During centuries of whaling and sealing activities, ships carried unintentional stowaways to South Georgia. </p>



<p>Seeds clung to cargo, rats found refuge in ships' holds, and insects remained undetected. While many of these introductions may not have been successful, some species found a foothold.</p>



<p>Now, a new threat compounds this issue: climate change is fueling the retreat of South Georgia's glaciers. This opens up newly exposed terrain, creating fresh territory that these established invasive species are poised to exploit, potentially spreading into previously untouched parts of the island's fragile ecosystem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invasive-species-in-the-glacier">Invasive species in the glacier</h2>



<p>A team of intrepid scientists, led by Dr. Pierre Tichit from <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Durham University</a>, wasn't content to just watch the ice melt. They wanted to understand what fills the void. Their study meticulously documented the plant and animal life colonizing former glacier zones. </p>



<p>In the freshest ground, just revealed by the ice, hardy pioneer plants pop up. As more time passes, a whole crew of species – mosses, insects, more complex plants – join the party.</p>



<p>"The surprise," states Dr. Tichit, "is the sheer number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/economic-time-bomb-costs-of-invasive-species-are-greatly-underestimated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strange species</a> thriving alongside native ones. Even plants from milder European climates are finding a foothold!"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-speed-of-invasive-species-in-the-glacier">Speed of invasive species in the glacier</h2>



<p>The retreat of glaciers on South Georgia, while seemingly gradual, exposes new land at an accelerating pace. This creates a crucial window of opportunity for the establishment of plant and animal life. </p>



<p>Invasive species, particularly those with a well-honed ability to exploit new environments, can capitalize on this opportunity much faster than native species.</p>



<p>The study identified two particularly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-hornets-so-successful-as-invasive-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aggressive invaders</a>: annual meadow grass, a common weed native to Europe, and mouse-ear chickweed. </p>



<p>These species have demonstrated a remarkable capacity for rapid colonization, outpacing all other competitors in the race to establish themselves in the newly exposed terrain left behind by receding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/himalayan-glaciers-retreating-threat-is-much-worse-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glaciers</a>. </p>



<p>This rapid spread highlights a key characteristic of successful invasive species: their ability to quickly exploit new resources and favorable conditions. </p>



<p>Their unfettered growth can disrupt the natural processes of colonization by native species, potentially leading to long-term ecological consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glaciers-struggle-due-to-invasive-species">Glaciers struggle due to invasive species</h2>



<p>The initial greening of formerly barren ground might seem harmless, even positive. However, invasive species rarely play nice. They can disrupt the fragile relationships within an ecosystem. </p>

<p>Psychological poverty, or the deep impact that not having enough money has on our minds, is at the heart of psychologist Leon Hilbert's research. </p>



<p>His findings highlight several key issues. Not having enough money makes financial decisions challenging. It also leads to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-procrastination-negativity-and-task-delay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">procrastination</a> - putting things off that should be done. </p>



<p>In addition, a lack of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/too-much-emphasis-on-money-can-lead-to-social-isolation/">money</a> causes people to avoid important tasks. Furthermore, it results in a feeling of being out of control. </p>



<p>Hilbert's work reveals that those struggling financially often choose immediate, smaller rewards over bigger ones that could come later, worsening their financial and emotional stress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-immediate-choice-now-or-later">The immediate choice: now or later</h2>



<p>Leon Hilbert, a socio-economic psychologist at <a href="https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/">Leiden University</a>, embarked on a journey to explore how monetary constraints influence decision-making processes. His findings show that people facing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/optimism-battle-money-anxiety/">financial hardships</a> often prefer small, immediate gains over larger, future rewards. </p>



<p>"They more often opt for 100 euros now rather than 200 euros later," said Hilbert, indicating that these choices are made irrespective of the individual's personality but are deeply rooted in their current financial predicaments.</p>



<p>The research included an experiment where participants, given a budgeting task, had their incomes adjusted to mimic debt conditions. Those under the burden of debt consistently chose short-term financial decisions, exacerbating their monetary woes. </p>



<p>Hilbert pointed out the stark reality facing those with limited funds: "There’s no room for long-term decisions if you need to put food on the table today."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-procrastination-and-avoidance">Procrastination and avoidance</h2>



<p>The study further exposed a direct correlation between financial scarcity and an increase in procrastination and avoidance behaviors. This was particularly evident in a long-term survey of a representative sample of the Dutch population. </p>



<p>Individuals with constrained financial resources were more likely to ignore financial responsibilities, such as not opening bills or failing to monitor their bank accounts, leading to greater financial difficulties over time.</p>



<p>Hilbert described this as a "negative spiral of helplessness," where the lack of financial control propels individuals into avoidance, further detaching them from opportunities to ameliorate their situation.</p>

<p>The study aimed to discern if the sense of lost control varied in countries offering state benefits. Contrary to expectations, individuals in such countries reported a greater sense of lost control despite financial aid.</p>



<p>Hilbert suggests a reason for this. In societies with individualistic values, people feel a greater loss of control despite financial aid. This contrasts with collectivist countries, where people often turn to family or friends for financial support, which helps reduce the feeling of losing control.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-escaping-the-poverty-trap">Escaping the poverty trap</h2>



<p>The research highlights the psychological poverty trap, where decisions made under the duress of financial scarcity perpetuate the cycle of poverty. </p>



<p>"If you have five final demands in the drawer, you feel you have lost control. That reinforces procrastination, which in turn has negative consequences because you aren't paying your bills," said Hilbert.</p>



<p>However, he stresses that these decisions, though problematic in the long run, are rational responses to immediate circumstances. </p>



<p>Hilbert noted that breaking this cycle starts with understanding the mental state of those in poverty. This understanding can help create solutions that lessen <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-wishful-thinking-impacts-our-decisions-in-times-of-stress/">stress</a> and improve their sense of control over money matters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-toward-empowerment-and-control">Toward empowerment and control</h2>



<p>The ultimate goal of the research is to foster a deeper understanding of the conditions that lead to financial vulnerability. By moving from punishment to providing tools and knowledge, we can find a way out of the psychological grip of poverty. </p>



<p>"You might be in difficulties now, but we want you to get out of this situation and these are the steps that will make it manageable," said Hilbert, advocating for solutions that allow individuals to regain control of their financial futures.</p>



<p>In summary, Hilbert's research provides critical insights into the psychological mechanisms at play in the poverty trap, emphasizing the importance of nuanced, compassionate interventions that address the root causes of financial distress. </p>



<p>Through understanding and empowerment, there's hope for breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering a sense of agency among those most affected.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
