<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>The story of <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri </em>began in 19th century Germany, where its fossilized remains were discovered. However, its unusual anatomy caused confusion among scientists. For decades, the true identity of this perplexing creature remained shrouded in mystery.</p>



<p>"Through research on Chinese fossils of the long-necked marine reptile <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinocephalosaurus-240-million-year-old-chinese-dragon-was-a-fierce-predator/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dinocephalosaurus</a>, which I published with colleagues just a few weeks ago, we were able to solve the mystery of <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri</em>. The anatomy shows us that it is closely related to Dinocephalosaurus," explains <a href="https://www.stephanspiekman.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Stephan Spiekman</a>, an expert on this group of animals.</p>



<p>"Trachelosaurus fischeri is the first fossil of this reptile group to be found outside of China. It is also the oldest long-necked marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/are-chameleons-reptiles-yes-heres-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reptile</a> known to date."</p>

<p>The partially disarticulated skeleton of <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri</em> provides valuable clues. It includes skull fragments, a substantial section of the spine, parts of the tail vertebrae, a well-preserved rib cage, sections of the pelvis, a femur, and even a possible foot bone. </p>



<p>These elements, though fragmented, give researchers a strong foundation for comparison with other early archosauromorphs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elongated-spine">Elongated spine</h3>



<p>Remarkably, <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri</em> boasts a long spine, with at least 21 neck vertebrae and 27 back vertebrae. This elongation is a hallmark of the tanysaurians. Furthermore, the ends of the spine's neural arches widen distinctively, unlike anything seen in other Triassic archosauromorphs. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unusual-ribs">Unusual ribs</h3>



<p>The creature's neck ribs are equally bizarre with their short, forked design, never extending past the length of the vertebra they belong to. This is another unusual trait unseen in its close relatives.</p>

<p>The fossil's right premaxilla reveals long, slightly curved teeth devoid of serrations – a feature resembling some tanystropheids and trachelosaurids. </p>



<p>Moving beyond the head, <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri</em> lacks a some parts of the pelvis, and its femur is surprisingly stout without a bend. Its barrel-shaped torso and rounded ribs show that this creature was built for life in the water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-strategies">Survival strategies</h2>



<p>Scientists suspect its signature long neck was a crucial weapon in its hunting arsenal. With lightning-fast strikes, it likely ambushed unsuspecting prey. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the discovery of land-dwelling animal footprints near the <em>Trachelosaurus fischeri</em> fossil paints a dramatic scene. It's possible the reptile ventured too close to the shore, or perhaps violent weather washed it ashore into shallow waters. </p>



<p>These footprints reveal the ever-changing nature of prehistoric coastlines, where the boundaries blurred between land and sea. The mix of marine and terrestrial creatures in the same rock layer suggests a thriving and diverse ecosystem. </p>



<p>The coastal waters were likely a bountiful hunting ground for Trachelosaurus fischeri. Yet, these same waters carried a deadly risk, as its fossilized remains tragically attest.</p>

<p>Interestingly, this heightened overestimation does not extend to inanimate objects, such as boxes, suggesting a uniquely <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-sensory-perception-brain-fascinating-interplay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social dimension</a> to this phenomenon.</p>



<p>Olaf Blanke, leading the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience at <a href="https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lnco/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPFL</a> and a part of <a href="https://www.neuroxlab.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neuro-X</a>, expressed astonishment at the findings. </p>



<p>“The fact that patients of Parkinson’s disease have a much higher over-estimation in counting people is mind-blowing because Parkinson’s disease is classically viewed as a movement disorder,” says Blanke. “We show that Parkinson’s may also be a perceptual disorder, especially of social stimuli, and that invisible presences in Parkinson’s Disease may impair even more the counting social brain!”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prescence-hallucinations-and-their-role-in-social-overcounting">Prescence hallucinations and their role in social overcounting</h2>



<p>The study focuses on "presence hallucinations," where individuals feel an invisible entity nearby, despite no one being present. <p>Researchers propose that the sensation of an invisible presence, likely due to specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nature-experiences-alter-time-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain mechanisms</a>, contributes to the overestimation of people. </p>



<p>This "extra presence" is subconsciously added to the count but only when estimating the number of people, not objects. This discovery underscores the social nature of our perceptual systems and their susceptibility to disorders like Parkinson's.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technodelics-merging-vr-and-robotics">Technodelics: Merging VR and robotics</h2>



<p>To explore this theory, the team employed a novel approach, merging virtual reality with robotics in a method they dub "technodelics." This innovative combination creates technology-induced altered states of consciousness and hallucinations. </p>



<p>In their experiments, participants were shown brief 3D scenes of varying numbers of people and experienced artificial presence hallucinations via a robotic finger. This setup not only induced hallucinations but also provided a measurable indication of an individual's susceptibility to them.</p>



<p>“The advantage of our technodelics environment is that it gives us an objective way to measure hallucinations which are highly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-can-change-the-colors-we-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">subjective states</a>,” explains Louis Albert, lead author of the study. “We are essentially engineering hallucinations, inducing hallucinations and getting a clear, implicit read-out of hallucination susceptibility at a given time.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-presence-hallucinations-with-virtual-worlds">Testing presence hallucinations with virtual worlds</h2>



<p>This research has led to the development of a simplified, online version of their experiment, allowing for unobtrusive testing from home. This breakthrough offers a significant advancement in assessing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-hallucination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hallucination</a> susceptibility, especially in Parkinson's disease patients, without the need for specialized equipment or personnel.</p>



<p>“The test can be carried out independently by patients, directly from home on their computer or tablet, thus has the potential to reach a large demographic at minimal cost," Albert said. </p>



<p>"Without the need for patients to travel to the clinic, this test is accessible and can reach people living far away from medical centers and in low-income countries," he concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-scientists-learned">What the scientists learned</h2>



<p>With around 170 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-plays-an-unexpected-role-in-movement-and-parkinsons-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Parkinson's disease</a> patients participating in the online test, including 69 with presence hallucinations, the study confirmed that those experiencing these hallucinations tend to overcount more. Remarkably, some reported seeing as many as 11 or more people in scenes showing only eight.</p>



<p>Fosco Bernasconi, a co-author of the study, highlighted the clinical implications of their findings. "We have strategies for determining if a patient with Parkinson’s disease experiences presence hallucinations or not, which means that in the future we should be able to identify and monitor those who are more prone to cognitive decline for early treatment."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-redefining-perception-and-the-future-of-parkinson-s-care">Redefining perception and the future of Parkinson's care</h2>



<p>In summary, EPFL neuroscientists have revolutionized our understanding of the human tendency to overcount in social settings. In their study, they linked this phenomenon to the "presence hallucinations" often experienced by individuals with Parkinson's disease. </p>

<p>These ancient crocodile ancestors, which thrived approximately 200 million years ago, have left behind fossils scattered across all continents except Antarctica and Australia, revealing a rich diversity in form and function.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers from <a href="https://www.univ-amu.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aix-Marseille University</a> in France recently discovered that what makes teddy bears so special isn't their looks, smiles, or even how soft they are. <p>Have you ever argued a point passionately, only to find yourself agreeing with the other side when the conversation ends? New research shows that even avatars in a virtual world can influence your opinions, particularly when it comes to judging right and wrong.</p>



<p>Scientists at <a href="https://english.swps.pl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPS University</a>, along with international collaborators, investigated a phenomenon called social influence. Simply put, it's the pressure we feel, consciously or not, to conform to the views of others within a group. </p>



<p>Social influence isn't limited to the real world; it appears our digital avatars can exert a similar force.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-avatars-and-social-influence">Avatars and social influence</h2>



<p>Avatars are simply those <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/digital-media-can-alter-our-visual-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">digital</a> representations we create of ourselves in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-posts-are-not-a-good-representation-of-our-true-selves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">online world</a>. Think of them as your virtual stand-ins. </p>



<p>Social influence, on the other hand, is that often unconscious urge to fit in, to adopt the opinions and behaviors of the group. "We usually conform to the views of others for two reasons," explains <a href="https://english.swps.pl/konrad-bocian" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Konrad Bocian</a> from SWPS University. </p>



<p>"First, we succumb to group pressure and want to gain social acceptance. Second, we lack sufficient knowledge and perceive the group as a source of a better interpretation of the current situation."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-influence-in-the-real-vs-virtual-world">Influence in the real vs. virtual world</h2>



<p>The scientists conducted a two-part experiment. The study began by having participants judge morally ambiguous scenarios. Take the following example: a mother punishes her child for poor academic performance. </p>



<p>The participants offered their initial judgment privately. Then things got interesting.</p>



<p>In the second part of the study, researchers revealed how others had judged the exact same scenarios, often with starkly different perspectives. This is where the pressure to conform came into play. </p>



<p>Participants changed their original moral judgments to align with the group 43% of the time. But, when the situation involved harm, the likelihood of the social influence lessened. This indicated the participants boundary within moral conformity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-influence-of-virtual-reality">Social influence of virtual reality</h2>



<p>The second experiment introduced an entirely new dimension: virtual reality (VR). Participants donned VR headsets and were immersed in a simulated environment with three avatars. </p>



<p>Some of these avatars were controlled by real people while others were powered by artificial intelligence.</p>



<p>The shocking revelation? Whether the avatars were governed by a human mind or simply lines of code, the level of social influence remained surprisingly similar. Participants adjusted their judgments to match the virtual group nearly 30% of the time.</p>



<p>"The results suggest that judgments about moral behavior, like other judgments we make, are subject to pressure from both real and virtual groups," notes Dr. Bocian.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dangers-of-digital-reality">Dangers of digital reality </h2>



<p>"Today, social influence is increasingly as potent in the digital world as in the real world," Dr. Bocian points out. "Therefore, it is necessary to determine how our judgments are shaped in the digital reality, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/digital-hugs-can-be-just-as-effective-as-physical-hugs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interactions</a> take place online, and some participants are avatars, not real humans."</p>



<p>This opens up a crucial discussion. In a world where we're spending increasing amounts of time in the metaverse and other virtual spaces, the distinction between the 'real' and the simulated is blurring.</p>



<p>"Group pressure to influence private moral judgments of individuals in a virtual world can be used for both good and malicious purposes," says Dr. Bocian. </p>



<p>"This is why understanding the mechanisms of this influence is so important. Only with in-depth knowledge can we increase the awareness of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/virtual-art-has-a-highly-positive-impact-on-mood-and-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virtual</a> world participants about the influence that others can have on them."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-our-susceptibility-to-influence"> Our susceptibility to influence </h2>



<p>This research serves as a chilling wake-up call. While virtual worlds hold exciting potential for connection, innovation, and creativity, they also come with unique social traps. </p>



<p>The avatars we interact with, regardless of the intelligence behind them, possess an unsettling power to shape our thoughts and behaviors. </p>



<p>As we venture deeper into digital realms, keeping a watchful eye on our susceptibility to influence will be crucial in navigating these brave new worlds. It's vital not to underestimate this power. </p>



<p>Being aware of this potential for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/internet-addiction-where-do-you-fall-on-the-spectrum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">influence</a>, while simultaneously fostering critical thinking skills, will be key to developing a healthy relationship with the expanding virtual landscapes.</p>

<p>The researchers conducted confidential interviews with 65 high school students aged 14-18. The experts explored their responses to real-world stories involving other students around the world, probing into the emotions and insights these stories elicited.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Following the interviews, participants underwent fMRI brain scans initially and then a follow-up scan two years later, with additional follow-ups as they transitioned into their early twenties.</p>

<p>Extremophiles and the search for alien life are at the forefront of scientific exploration as researchers delve into Earth's most inhospitable environments. </p>



<p>Thriving in extremes from deep-sea trenches to mountaintops, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-in-the-extreme-microbial-activity-discovered-in-old-faithful/">microorganisms</a>, known as extremophiles, flourish where most life cannot. Their adaptability not only sheds light on life on Earth but also aids in the search for life beyond it.</p>



<p>A notable advancement was reported in the American Chemical Society’s <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jproteome.3c00538" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Proteome Research</a>, where researchers have introduced a new method for identifying extremophiles. </p>



<p>By focusing on protein fragments rather than genetic analysis, this approach has identified two new bacteria species in Chile's high-altitude lakes, mirroring conditions found on early Mars.</p>

<p>Collecting water samples, the researchers cultivated 66 microbes to test their hypothesis: Can the new proteotyping technique, which analyzes protein fragments, outperform traditional gene sequencing in accurately identifying these microorganisms?</p>

<p>"Our findings signify a paradigm shift in understanding leatherback turtle behavior along the U.S. coastline," said Rider. "By highlighting key foraging grounds and migration patterns, we aim to inform targeted conservation strategies to safeguard the future of these magnificent creatures."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-journey-of-the-leatherback-turtle-revealed">The journey of the leatherback turtle revealed</h2>



<p>Using advanced satellite tags, the researchers tracked the movements of 52 leatherback sea turtles from 2017 to 2022. These tags, attached to turtles off the coasts of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Beaufort, North Carolina, provided valuable data on location, depth, and water temperature. </p>



<p>The tagging and monitoring effort unveiled significant activity off Cape Cod and Nantucket. Here, leatherbacks feast on the abundant jellyfish present in late summer and early fall. Similarly, signs of feeding behavior in the Mid-Atlantic Bight mark it as a crucial foraging area. However, further research is needed to pinpoint the turtles' exact diet.</p>



<p>Researchers have identified the South Atlantic Bight as a versatile habitat. It supports various stages of the leatherback's migration cycle, including nesting and overwintering. Observations of feeding behavior along the continental shelf ridge further highlight this area's significance.</p>

<p>Moreover, the research underlines the leatherbacks’ vulnerability to threats such as incidental capture by fisheries and vessel strikes. With offshore wind farms developing in critical regions, these findings provide invaluable guidance.</p>



<p>The groundbreaking study advances our knowledge of leatherback sea turtles' migration and foraging patterns, shaping future conservation strategies. <p>A comprehensive study offers a deep dive into the complexities surrounding the local impacts of wind turbines, particularly focusing on how their visibility can influence property values in communities across the United States.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was conducted by an international team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.cmcc.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMCC Foundation</a>, the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> (PIK), and the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California at Berkeley</a>, </p>

<p>The investigation is critical for understanding the nuanced trade-offs between renewable energy's environmental benefits and its local effects, potentially reshaping discussions around renewable energy development.</p>



<p>“This situation is a classic 'Not In My Backyard' problem, which leads to extensive policy debates on renewable energy growth,” said lead author Wei Guo, a researcher at CMCC and the <a href="https://www.eiee.org/">European Institute on Economics and the Environment</a> (EIEE).&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In the big picture, the economic solution is about finding a balance between the global environmental benefits of renewable energy and the local impacts on communities nearby.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-wind-turbines-on-local-communities-nbsp">Impact of wind turbines on local communities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research takes an innovative step by focusing on the often-overlooked aspect of wind turbines' impact on local communities, specifically how their presence in the landscape can affect the valuation of nearby homes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By constructing a comprehensive database detailing the visibility of wind turbines - including their location, height, and the surrounding topography - the study leverages hedonic valuation theory to statistically estimate the effects of wind turbine visibility on home values, utilizing an extensive dataset covering the majority of U.S. home sales since 1997.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-depreciation-of-property-values">Depreciation of property values</h2>



<p>The findings reveal a discernible negative impact on property values within an 8 km radius of visible wind turbines, an effect that diminishes with increased distance and over time post-installation. In addition, the researchers found that seeing a windmill closer than two kilometers can lower a house’s value by up to 8 percent.</p>



<p>“To picture this, imagine holding a golf ball at arm's length - that is roughly how big a wind turbine looks from that distance,” Guo explained. </p>



<p>“However, as one moves further from the windmill, its impact on house values drops off quickly. From 8 kilometers away, a wind turbine looks about as big as an aspirin tablet at arm’s length, and at this distance, it doesn't really affect what people think their homes are worth.”</p>



<p>The experts calculated a total depreciation of US $24.5 billion in property values for U.S. homes with views of wind turbines, a figure that, while substantial, represents only a minor fraction of the over $45 trillion total value of all homes in the U.S. in 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Guo, “although houses close to wind turbines can lose some value due to the disrupted view, the impacts are just a small part in the grand theme of all houses, and we expect it to become even less of an issue in the future."</p>



<p>"This project stands at the cutting edge of understanding how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/renewable-energy-must-be-doubled-by-2030/">renewable energy</a> affects local communities. It is like putting on a new pair of glasses to look at how wind power impacts people's lives and homes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nationwide-evaluation-of-wind-power">Nationwide evaluation of wind power</h2>



<p>This groundbreaking study not only provides a nationwide evaluation of wind power generation's external costs but also introduces methodological innovations by considering the actual visibility of turbines from residences, a significant step forward in the field of environmental economics and policy research.</p>



<p>“Personally, living in northern California for the past five years, I have seen firsthand how local people can be hesitant or opposed to new wind turbines projects. This sparked my interest in this field of research," said Guo.</p>



<p>"For me, this project is more than just an academic study. It's about addressing a real-world issue that I've observed, and using my expertise to shed light on a topic that affects many people's lives.”</p>

<p>Kombucha, the tangy, fizzy fermented <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-delays-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tea</a>, has exploded in popularity thanks to its supposed health benefits. Researchers at <a href="https://www.ship.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shippensburg University</a> are uncovering ways to fine-tune the process of brewing kombucha tea. </p>



<p>"Brewers typically see making kombucha as an art more than a science," says Jeb Kegerreis, a physical chemist and one of the team's principal investigators. </p>



<p>"So, when we are doing a consultation, we also walk the brewer through the biochemistry of what's happening during fermentation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-scoby-in-kombucha-brewing">What's SCOBY in kombucha brewing?</h2>



<p>SCOBY, an essential fermentation factor, stands for "Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast." This lively community of microbes is the magic behind kombucha. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/a-beginners-guide-to-the-wild-world-of-wild-yeast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">yeast</a> gobbles up sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide (that's where the fizz comes from). Then, the bacteria step in, converting most of that alcohol and other sugars into flavorful acids. </p>



<p>It's a beautiful partnership, but since SCOBYs are living things, each batch can turn out a bit differently. This variability is where the Shippensburg University team comes in to help both home brewers and commercial producers.</p>

<p>Shippensburg University's research reveals that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brewing-non-alcoholic-beer-that-tastes-just-like-regular-beer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brewing</a> kombucha in silicone bags yields some surprising benefits:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kombucha-brewing-speed">Kombucha brewing speed</h3>



<p>Brewing time gets slashed from two weeks to one! Why? Silicone is more porous than glass, allowing more oxygen in, and that fuels the bacteria to work faster.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-booze">Less booze</h3>



<p>The extra oxygen helps the bacteria break down alcohol more efficiently, which is great news if you want a low-alcohol kombucha.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tangy-twist">Tangy twist</h3>



<p>Silicone brews seem to have more gluconic acid, which provides a tart flavor without the vinegary punch of acetic acid (another common acid in kombucha).</p>



<p>"We think this acid will become more popular with brewers,” says Kegerreis. “Gluconic acid provides acidity without the sour vinegar taste you get from acetic acid, and that may appeal to more tastebuds.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-sugars-in-kombucha-brewing">Different sugars in kombucha brewing</h2>



<p>Typically, kombucha is made with plain sucrose (table sugar). But the Shippensburg team wanted to see how starting with different types of sugar would impact the fermentation process.</p>



<p>"During the fermentation process, yeast in the SCOBY breaks sucrose into glucose and fructose. By using just glucose or just fructose, we looked at how removing that first step affects the whole brewing process,” explains chemistry student Abbi Czarnecki. </p>



<p>Here's what the researchers found:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glucose">Glucose</h3>



<p>Using pure glucose as the SCOBY's food gave a kombucha with loads of gluconic acid and very little alcohol.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fructose">Fructose</h3>



<p>Fructose-fed kombucha had higher acetic acid levels (that vinegar tang) and more alcohol. It also tended to be sweeter.</p>



<p>“If minimizing ethanol production is the measure of our success, fructose failed in that department. Out of all three sugars, it produced the most ethanol,” Ian Loscher, another chemistry student on the team adds.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
