<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>Anoles have been dubbed as the "scuba-diving” champions of the lizard world, due to a unique ability to remain submerged for an impressive duration of more than 16 minutes. This fascinating behavior showcases the complex interplay between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/resilient-lizard-climate-change/">lizards</a>' adaptive behaviors and the physiological costs associated with their aquatic escapades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was conducted by <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> Professor Lindsey Swierk and doctoral candidate Alexandra M. Martin, along with Christopher K. Boccia of <a href="https://www.queensu.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queens University</a> in Canada.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evading-predators-nbsp">Evading predators&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In earlier work, the researchers found that anoles craft an air bubble over their nostrils to breathe underwater, primarily as a means to escape <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predators-help-prevent-biodiversity-loss/">predators</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Marin, while anole’s first line of defense is to run away on land, they will often dive underwater to evade predators’ - or researchers’ - pursuit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diving-lizards-nbsp">Diving lizards&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study's findings indicate a notable difference in dive duration between male and female anoles, with males surfacing approximately 20 fewer seconds than females.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This may not sound like very much, but biologically, 20 seconds could easily be the difference between life and death," Martin said. "A hungry bird may decide that searching for an extra 20 seconds simply isn't worth the energy it might cost and would rather search for better luck downstream."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drawbacks-of-diving">Drawbacks of diving</h2>



<p>However, the act of diving is not without its drawbacks. The researchers observed that diving could lead to a substantial drop in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-self-regulated-their-body-temperature/">body temperature</a>, by up to 6°C.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Given that anoles are ectotherms, dependent on external sources for thermoregulation, prolonged exposure to cold water can adversely affect various physiological functions, including those critical for predator evasion.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-optimization-problem-nbsp">Optimization problem&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Semi-aquatic anoles seem to have evolved a sex-specific tradeoff between finding safety underwater and retaining body heat on land. This represents what behavioral ecologists call an 'optimization problem,' where animals have to balance the costs and benefits of performing particular behaviors," Swierk explained.</p>



<p>Despite the absence of sex differences in oxygen consumption, the study suggests that dive time disparities are influenced by factors other than respiratory efficiency. </p>



<p>Martin shed light on the reproductive strategies of Anolis aquaticus, noting the divergent priorities between males and females - while females invest more energy in producing offspring, males spend more time on courtship and mating activities - which could explain their differing behaviors when faced with the threat of predation.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-research-nbsp">Intriguing research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers are intrigued by the anoles' ability to maintain a "dry suit" of air underwater, possibly aiding in heat retention. Swierk expressed enthusiasm for further exploration of these diving lizards.</p>



<p>"The ways that animals can adapt to environmental pressures are astounding and have continued to inspire humans to push the boundaries of bio-inspired design. We are curious and excited to explore these ideas in the future," she concluded.</p>

<p>These studies, primarily published in the American Meteorological Society's journals, highlight the significant role of long-term warming trends, possibly more pronounced than previously believed, in driving the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-has-lost-3000-billion-tons-of-ice-in-25-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">record-low sea ice levels</a> in the Southern Ocean observed in 2023.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-s-shifting-ice-dynamics">Antarctic's shifting ice dynamics</h2>

<p>Since 2006, the extent of sea ice during summer months in Earth's south polar region has shown increasing variability, correlating more with the prior month's sea ice levels than with atmospheric conditions that typically influence it. </p>



<p>This shift suggests a fundamental change in the interaction between sea ice and the underlying ocean, likely tied to global warming, leading to this heightened variability.</p>



<p>“Perhaps the most striking change for scientists is that … the recent extreme fluctuations over the last decade can’t be explained by the atmosphere alone,” Hobbs said. </p>



<p>“AAPP research shows that the changes we’re seeing -- how much the sea ice can shift from its average state, and how long those shifts can stick around -- are controlled by ocean processes. This is more evidence that ocean changes are probably the secret to what’s happened in recent years," Hobbs explained further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-polar-regions-responses-to-warming">Polar regions' responses to warming</h2>



<p>Differences in how the Arctic and Antarctic respond to warming are evident in a study by Hamish D. Prince and Tristan S. L’Ecuyer from the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a>. </p>



<p>While both poles are experiencing increased solar energy input due to melting sea ice reducing their reflectivity, their reactions diverge. The Arctic manages to emit nearly as much heat back into space as it absorbs, maintaining its net energy balance despite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-free-arctic-summers-could-be-the-new-normal-by-2030/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rapid ice melt</a>. </p>



<p>Conversely, the Antarctic does not emit more heat energy back into space, suggesting that it absorbs solar radiation into the climate system in a manner that could significantly affect both the Southern Ocean and atmospheric temperatures, as well as Earth's overall latitudinal heat balance.</p>



<p>“Our study provides a robust, observed record of a fundamental aspect of the climate system. Unlike the Arctic, where increased solar absorption is balanced by thermal emission, the Southern Ocean surface temperature remains insensitive to increasing absorption, accumulating additional energy,” says Prince. </p>



<p>“The global impact of this contrasting polar response to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-new-clues-about-rapid-arctic-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reducing albedo</a> may be far reaching but is broadly unknown," Prince concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-arctic-s-dampened-temperature-extremes">The Arctic's dampened temperature extremes</h2>



<p>Research by Igor Polyakov and colleagues from the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/uaf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alaska, Fairbanks</a>, reveals that melting sea ice in the Arctic is leading to less pronounced seasonal temperature extremes. </p>



<p>With the exposure to more humid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-arctic-dipole-the-atmospheric-pattern-shaping-our-future-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean air</a>, the gap between summer highs and winter lows has been narrowing since 1979. </p>



<p>This "dampening" of temperature extremes is highlighted by cooler summer peaks and significantly warmer winter troughs, a trend that is expected to persist as the Arctic continues to warm.</p>



<p>"Our study shows a fundamental shift in the Arctic climate system toward increased mobility and a close connection between the atmosphere, ice sheet, and ocean,” explained Polyakov. </p>



<p>“This strong coupling makes it very difficult to understand the system's behavior, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach in the research of Arctic climate change."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-2023-s-polar-region-sea-ice-lows">Rethinking 2023's polar region sea ice lows</h2>



<p>Lastly, a study led by Till Kuhlbrodt from the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a>, published in the <em>Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society</em>, suggests that the record-high North Atlantic sea surface temperatures and record-low Antarctic sea ice cover in 2023 resemble conditions expected in a world experiencing 3°C of global warming. </p>



<p>While factors like El Niño have been considered primary drivers of these extremes, the study argues for a more nuanced understanding, pointing to a potential "regime change" in ocean dynamics as a significant contributor.</p>



<p>Till Kuhlbrodt remarks, “Last year’s observed extremes in the North Atlantic and in the Southern Ocean are so concerning because they lie far outside anything we’ve seen in the 40 years before. While the acceleration of global heating will be a major contributor, our analysis of ocean data suggests that a regime change in the oceans could play a crucial role too.”</p>



<p>These findings underscore the importance of continued research and monitoring of Earth's polar regions, as they play a critical role in our global climate system and its ongoing changes.</p>

<p>As mentioned above, the albedo effect plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's temperature, particularly in polar regions. </p>



<p>Albedo measures the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-a-widespread-decline-of-snow-cover-in-the-northern-hemisphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reflectivity of a surface</a>, indicating how much sunlight it reflects back into the atmosphere. </p>



<p>Surfaces with high albedo, such as ice and snow, reflect most of the sunlight, while darker surfaces, like the ocean or forested areas, absorb more sunlight and convert it into heat.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-polar-regions">Impact on polar regions</h3>



<p>In the Arctic and Antarctic, the albedo effect is a significant factor in climate dynamics. These regions are covered by vast expanses of ice and snow, which have a high albedo and thus reflect a large portion of the incoming solar radiation. This reflection helps to keep the polar regions and the planet at large cooler.</p>



<p>However, as global temperatures rise, we witness a concerning trend. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-transformation-ice-melt-plant-growth-vegetation-cascading-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice and snow cover</a> in the polar regions is diminishing, uncovering darker surfaces beneath, such as ocean water or land. </p>



<p>These surfaces have a lower albedo, meaning they absorb more solar radiation and contribute to further warming. </p>



<p>This process creates a feedback loop: as ice melts and albedo decreases, more heat is absorbed, leading to more melting.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-consequences">Global consequences</h3>



<p>The implications of changes in the albedo effect in polar regions extend far beyond their boundaries. As these areas warm and ice melts, it contributes to global sea-level rise, posing a threat to coastal communities worldwide. </p>



<p>Moreover, changes in albedo can influence global weather patterns and the distribution of species, impacting ecosystems and biodiversity.</p>



<p>The reduction of ice and snow cover also affects indigenous communities and wildlife in the polar regions, disrupting traditional ways of life and threatening survival. </p>



<p>For instance, polar bears rely on sea ice to hunt for seals, and as the ice disappears, so does their primary food source.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-path-forward">The path forward</h3>



<p>Addressing the challenges posed by the albedo effect in polar regions requires global cooperation and concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. </p>



<p>By slowing the pace of climate change, we can help preserve the polar ice and snow cover, mitigating the impacts on global temperatures and sea levels. </p>



<p>Efforts such as reforestation and the development of reflective materials for urban areas can also help increase the Earth's albedo and combat warming.</p>

<p>An intriguing study conducted by researchers at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has shed light on the intricate social lives of feral <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cow-drama-herd-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cattle</a>, offering unprecedented insights into their behaviors and welfare. </p>



<p>By focusing on free-ranging cattle in Hong Kong, this research delves into how sex and social status influence social grooming -- specifically, the act of one animal licking another, known as allogrooming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closer-look-at-the-social-dynamics-of-cattle">Closer look at the social dynamics of cattle</h2>



<p>Feral cattle, while numbering over a billion in global production, find a unique niche in Hong Kong, with around 900 brown <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cow-manure-greatly-improves-soil-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cattle</a> roaming freely. </p>



<p>Unlike their farm-raised counterparts, these cattle exhibit distinct social behaviors, offering a rare window into their natural interactions. </p>



<p>Alan McElligott, associated with CityUHK’s Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, underscores the rarity and value of studying these free-ranging groups to understand the evolution of behavior in cattle groups.</p>



<p>“Most research on cattle behaviors is conducted on farms, and so the opportunity to study cattle behavior in free-ranging groups is rare, as there are only a few feral populations worldwide,” explains McElligott.</p>



<p>The study, a collaborative effort led by McElligott and PhD researcher George M. W. Hodgson, alongside other distinguished team members, was conducted in Sai Kung East Country Park, Hong Kong. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-cattle-social-structure">Understanding cattle social structure</h2>



<p>Observations spanned February to May 2022, focusing on a mixed-sex herd and revealing that while all cattle were recipients of allogrooming, not all engaged in performing it. </p>



<p>A notable find was the preferential grooming among the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-want-to-talk-to-their-cows-so-ai-is-helping-them-interpret-moos-and-burps/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cattle</a>, with dominant females receiving more attention, highlighting an asymmetrical distribution of grooming based on social hierarchy and sex.</p>

<p>In the study, 125 healthy volunteers ranging from 18 to 90 years old underwent three distinct assessments. </p>

<p>There are a couple of reasons why smaller size may impact the ability of North Atlantic right whales to reproduce. One is that smaller whales might be less healthy overall. </p>



<p>They might not have the strength or energy needed to carry and raise a baby. Having a calf takes a lot of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/game-changing-invention-converts-both-co2-and-plastic-waste-into-renewable-energy/">energy</a>, and their bodies might struggle to keep up.</p>



<p>Another reason is that smaller animals might not be able to have as many babies as bigger whales. Their reproductive organs might be smaller, or they might have other physical limitations that make getting pregnant or having healthy calves difficult. </p>



<p>It could also be harder for them to find a mate or for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-moths-use-an-aphrodisiac-during-mating-to-feel-macho/">mating</a> to be successful, making it even tougher for them to have offspring.</p>

<p>"This year alone, the U.S. East Coast has become a graveyard for North Atlantic right whales after two young whales were struck by boats, another juvenile died from a painful entanglement in fishing gear, and two newborn calves are presumed dead after going missing."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This study shows the need for stronger protections to reduce the constant risks and stress North Atlantic right whales face every day from navigating a jungle of vertical fishing lines and speeding boats in their migration path."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"President Biden and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo can stop whales washing up on our shores from boat strikes, and give North Atlantic right whales a chance at survival, if they stop delaying and finalize the updated vessel speed rule today.”</p>

<p>In North Queensland, invasive Asian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honeybee-pollination-produces-plant-offspring-vastly-inferior-to-plants-pollinated-by-other-species/">honeybees</a> (Apis cerana) have surprisingly flourished, expanding from a single swarm to over 10,000 colonies across a 10,000 square kilometer area, akin to the size of Greater Sydney.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This enormous growth challenges the conventional evolutionary theory that a significant genetic bottleneck would hinder such expansion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-adaptability-with-limited-diversity">Unexpected adaptability with limited diversity</h2>



<p>"Our study of this bee population shows that some species can quickly adjust to new environments despite starting with very low genetic diversity relative to their native-range populations," said co-lead author Rosalyn Gloag from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> School of Life and Environmental Sciences </p>

<p>The team's investigation into the Queensland invasion provides a comprehensive genetic chronology of a natural incursion, tracing back to the bees' 2007 arrival, likely from Papua New Guinea. This event raised biosecurity alarms in Australia due to potential parasite threats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, these bees were found to be free of the feared varroa mite, which has since entered Australia through unknown means, posing a risk to the local honey industry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-biological-dataset-nbsp">Valuable biological dataset&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries</a>' exhaustive early sampling efforts, aimed at eradicating the bees, yielded a valuable biological dataset. </p>



<p>“We were lucky to have a complete sample timeline of this invasive population thanks to the incredible efforts of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, which sampled the population extensively during the early years of the incursion as part of an eradication attempt,” Gloag explained.</p>



<p>“Although that attempt was unsuccessful, the biological material collected has been incredibly valuable for understanding how these invasions proceed. And that in turn helps us prepare better for future invasions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-natural-selection">Observing natural selection</h2>



<p>Analyzing genomes from 118 bees collected over a decade, the researchers witnessed natural selection in action within a genetically constrained population. “We could essentially observe natural selection acting over time in a population that started with low genetic diversity,” Gloag said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“From this unique vantage point, we could see that selection was acting on the variation in genomes that had arrived with the handful of original bees. It wasn’t variation that arose later by mutations. In other words, some species with very low genetic diversity can adapt very quickly.”</p>



<p>This finding that species can swiftly adapt with scant genetic diversity presents a mixed outcome. While it poses challenges for managing invasive species, it also offers hope for populations endangered by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-the-biggest-threat-to-wild-bees/">climate change</a> or catastrophes, demonstrating potential resilience despite genetic losses.</p>

<p>In the dense forests of Central and South America, Seba's short-tailed bats thrive, navigating through the trees and feeding primarily on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolutionary-secrets-how-bat-teeth-adapted-to-their-diverse-diets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pepper fruit</a> while living in large communal groups. </p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-find-a-protein-in-bats-that-can-slow-aging-and-fight-most-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a>, nestled in the safety of hollow trunks and rocky caverns by day, emerge at night in search of food, guided by their unique ability to echolocate. </p>



<p>This bat navigation process involves emitting ultrasonic sounds that bounce off objects, creating an "image" of their surroundings based on the returning echoes. </p>



<p>But amidst the constant chatter and ambient noise of their colonies, how do these creatures manage to filter out and focus on the sounds critical for their survival?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bat-navigation-echolocation-and-communication">Bat navigation: Echolocation and communication</h2>



<p>A recent study led by Johannes Wetekam and Professor Manfred Kössl from <a href="https://www.goethe-university-frankfurt.de/47091958/Department_of_Neurobiology_and_Biosensors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goethe University</a> Frankfurt's Neurobiology and Biosensors Working Group has shed light on this fascinating question. </p>



<p>Previously, it was believed that the brain's higher regions were responsible for processing sounds. </p>



<p>However, research from 2021, conducted by the same team, revealed that this intricate processing begins in the brainstem -- a part of the brain vital for controlling essential functions like breathing and heart rate.</p>



<p>Unlike prior studies that relied on artificial stimuli, the latest research focused on natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-advice-leave-bats-alone-if-we-want-to-prevent-future-pandemics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bat calls</a>, including both communication and echolocation sounds. </p>



<p>“With our study, we wanted to find out what happens in deviation detection when, instead of meaningless stimuli, ones are presented to Seba’s short-tailed bat that actually occur in its auditory world,” explains Wetekam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taking-a-deep-dive-into-bat-brains">Taking a deep dive into bat brains</h2>



<p>To conduct their experiments, the team inserted two ultra-thin electrodes under the bats' scalps, recording <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-have-brains-that-synchronize-when-they-socialize/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain waves</a> while the animals were under general anesthesia to prevent any movement that could skew the results. </p>



<p>Remarkably, the bats' brains continued to respond to sounds even in this state, providing a clear picture of how different calls are processed.</p>



<p>The findings revealed a distinct difference in how the brainstem handles echolocation and communication calls. </p>



<p>Echolocation sounds, which are crucial for navigating and avoiding obstacles, triggered stronger signals in the brainstem when they were less frequent, indicating a mechanism for deviance detection. </p>



<p>This suggests that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-bats-use-earths-magnetic-field-as-a-compass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a> are primed to respond more swiftly to these crucial navigational cues. </p>



<p>Communication sounds, on the other hand, did not show the same pattern, highlighting a tailored response system based on the type of sound and its importance for survival.</p>



<p>“Bats probably need to react faster during echolocation than when communicating with conspecifics,” presumes Manfred Kössl.</p>



<p>“The brainstem is the first station in the brain to receive the acoustic signals, which is why calculating the probability of echolocation calls might be necessary first of all there, and especially their echoes, so that the animal can dodge obstacles in good time.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-insights-from-bat-brain-waves">Surprising insights from bat brain waves</h2>



<p>Moreover, the study uncovered that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-brains-are-highly-specialized-for-flight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a>' brainstems do not just differentiate sounds based on frequency but can also detect rapid changes in frequency or volume, underscoring its sophisticated capacity for sound processing. </p>



<p>This challenges the traditional view of the brainstem as a mere relay station for auditory signals, positioning it as a critical component in the early stages of sound analysis.</p>



<p>“This is astonishing, as the brainstem is a rather young part of the brain that scientists did not previously think capable of any substantial involvement in signal processing,” says Wetekam. </p>



<p>“They saw its role more in receiving signals from the auditory nerve and transmitting them to high-level regions of the brain.”</p>



<p>These insights are not just a breakthrough in understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hibernation-may-be-key-to-extraordinary-longevity-in-bats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bat echolocation</a> but also hold potential implications for human medical research. </p>



<p>Conditions like ADHD and schizophrenia, characterized by difficulties in processing external stimuli, may benefit from these findings, suggesting that the lower regions of the brain, such as the brainstem, play a more significant role than previously acknowledged. </p>



<p>Additionally, by unraveling how the bat brainstem distinguishes between complex acoustic signals, researchers hope to gain deeper insights into the human brain's ability to process and interpret complex speech patterns.</p>

<p>Scientists have made the first direct observation of the influence of the universe's most potent magnetic fields on deconfined <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/incredibly-profound-evidence-of-nuclear-fission-discovered-in-the-cosmos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear matter</a>. </p>



<p>This discovery, unveiled in a new study by the STAR collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (<a href="https://www.bnl.gov/rhic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RHIC</a>) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, emerged from examining how particles of opposite charges diverge after being released from collisions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-fifth-force-of-nature-subatomic-particles-are-defying-the-laws-of-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atomic nuclei</a>. </p>



<p>This finding offers a novel method to probe the electrical conductivity of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), shedding light on the fundamental components of atomic nuclei.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-direct-evidence-of-cosmic-magnetic-fields">First direct evidence of cosmic magnetic fields</h2>



<p>Diyu Shen, a leading physicist from <a href="https://www.fudan.edu.cn/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fudan University</a> and a key member of the <a href="https://www.star.bnl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">STAR collaboration</a>, emphasized the significance of this research, saying, “This is the first measurement of how the magnetic field interacts with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP)."</p>



<p>The study focuses on the effects of powerful magnetic fields created during off-center collisions of heavy atomic nuclei, such as gold. </p>



<p>These fields are believed to be among the strongest in the universe, significantly surpassing those found around neutron stars or generated by human-made objects. </p>



<p>“Those fast-moving positive charges should generate a very strong magnetic field, predicted to be 10<sup>18</sup> gauss,” said Gang Wang, a STAR physicist from the University of California, Los Angeles. “This is probably the strongest magnetic field in our universe.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-magnetic-fields-in-nuclear-matter">Detecting magnetic fields in nuclear matter</h2>



<p>Due to the fleeting nature of these magnetic fields, lasting less than a ten-millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a second, the researchers did not measure the fields directly. </p>



<p>Instead, they detected their impact on the particles ejected from the collisions. By analyzing the collective movement of charged <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/attosecond-electron-freeze-frame-of-liquid-water-seen-for-the-first-time-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particles</a>, they sought to identify patterns indicative of electromagnetic field influence.</p>



<p>“Specifically, we were looking at the collective motion of charged particles,” Wang said.</p>



<p>The research team meticulously tracked the movement of various pairs of charged particles, differentiating the effects of the magnetic fields from other potential influences. </p>



<p>This careful analysis led to the identification of charge-dependent deflection patterns unique to electromagnetic fields within the QGP, confirming the phenomenon of Faraday induction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-effects-in-various-atomic-collisions">Observing effects in various atomic collisions</h2>



<p>This effect was not limited to collisions involving large nuclei. It was also observed in smaller systems, indicating a universal principle. </p>



<p>“We wanted to see if the charged particles generated in off-center heavy ion collisions were being deflected in a way that could only be explained by the existence of an electromagnetic field in the tiny specks of QGP created in these collisions,” said Aihong Tang, a Brookhaven Lab physicist and member of the STAR collaboration.</p>



<p>The signal was even stronger in lower-energy collisions, providing additional evidence of the magnetic fields' role in inducing particle-deflecting electromagnetic fields.</p>



<p>“This effect is stronger at lower energy because the lifetime of <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic field</a> is longer at lower energy; the speed of the nuclear fragments is lower, so the magnetic field and its effects last longer,” said Wang.</p>



<p>The implications of this discovery extend far beyond the identification of these magnetic fields. By using the observed effects to probe the QGP's conductivity, the scientists hope to uncover more about the fundamental properties of quarks and gluons. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-probing-the-qgp-s-conductivity-and-beyond">Probing the QGP's conductivity and beyond</h2>



<p>“This is a fundamental and important property,” said Shen. “We can infer the value of the conductivity from our measurement of the collective motion. The extent to which the particles are deflected relates directly to the strength of the electromagnetic field and the conductivity in the QGP -- and no one has measured the conductivity of QGP before.”</p>



<p>Furthermore, this research could offer insights into the <a href="https://www.bnl.gov/newsroom/news.php?a=119062" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chiral magnetic effect</a> and the conditions under which quarks and gluons form hadrons, contributing to our understanding of the nuclear phase diagram and the strong force's interactions under extreme electromagnetic fields. </p>



<p>Wang envisions this method as a new avenue to explore these fundamental properties, adding another dimension to our comprehension of the strong interaction.</p>



<p>“We want to map out the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-designs-nuclear-fission-reactor-to-provide-electricity-on-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear</a> ‘phase diagram,’ which shows at which temperature the quarks and gluons can be considered free and at which temperature they will ‘freeze out’ to become hadrons," Wang explained. </p>



<p>"Those properties and the fundamental interactions of quarks and gluons, which are mediated by the strong force, will be modified under an extreme electromagnetic field,” said Wang. We can investigate these fundamental properties in another dimension to provide more information about the strong interaction," Wang concluded.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

Instead, researchers from Stanford Medicine have found that our bodies undergo dramatic molecular changes at two specific ages: 44 and 60. <p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>



<p>Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
