<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>

<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>A team of astronomers led by <a href="https://www.bgu.ac.il/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ben-Gurion University of the Negev</a> (BGU) has identified an extremely red, gravitationally lensed supermassive black hole in the early universe. This discovery, facilitated by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-discovers-second-most-distant-galaxy-in-pandoras-cluster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a> (JWST), suggests the black hole is concealed behind a thick dust veil, obscuring much of its light. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-of-the-early-universe-nbsp">Mysteries of the early universe&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts found that the black hole's mass is significantly larger relative to its host galaxy compared to more local examples. The research marks a significant advancement in understanding the early universe.</p>



<p>Launched two years ago, the JWST has revolutionized our view of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ceers-2112-ancient-galaxy-looks-strikingly-similar-to-ours/">galaxy</a> formation. The telescope has uncovered very early galaxies in greater numbers and with more brightness than anticipated, along with some new object types.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-far-into-the-past">Looking far into the past</h2>



<p>The discovery was made in images from the JWST, initially believed to be a lensed, quasar-like object from the early universe. Quasars are bright centers of galaxies where supermassive black holes actively accrete material, emitting vast amounts of radiation that overshadows the host galaxy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The images were part of the <a href="https://jwst-uncover.github.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNCOVER program</a>, aimed at observing the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 with unprecedented depth. The mass of the cluster causes a gravitational lensing effect, magnifying background galaxies and allowing astronomers to see further into the past than otherwise possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-red-blooming-objects-nbsp">Red-blooming objects&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"We were very excited when JWST started sending its first data. We were scanning the data that arrived for the UNCOVER program and three very compact yet red-blooming objects prominently stood out and caught our eyes," said lead author Lukas Furtak, a postdoctoral researcher at BGU. "Their 'red-dot' appearance immediately led us to suspect that it was a quasar-like object."</p>



<p>The team used a numerical lensing model of the galaxy cluster to determine that the red dots were multiple images of the same background source, seen when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-study-claims-our-universe-is-27-billion-years-old-double-the-current-age-estimate/">universe</a> was only about 700 million years old.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Analysis of the object's colors indicated that it was not a typical star-forming galaxy. This further supported the supermassive black hole hypothesis," said Professor Rachel Bezanson from the <a href="https://www.pitt.edu/">University of Pittsburgh</a> and co-lead of the UNCOVER program.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-staggering-results-nbsp">Staggering results&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Acquiring JWST/NIRSpec data for the three images of the "red dot" provided staggering results. "The spectra were just mind blowing," remarked another co-lead of the UNCOVER project, Professor Ivo Labbé from the <a href="https://www.swinburne.edu.au/">Swinburne University of Technology</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis not only confirmed the object as a supermassive black hole and measured its exact redshift but also provided a solid estimate for its mass from the width of its emission lines.</p>



<p>The research led to the surprising finding that the black hole's mass is exceedingly high compared to the mass of its host galaxy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"All the light of that galaxy must fit within a tiny region the size of a present-day star-cluster...Even packing all the possible stars into such a small region, the black hole ends up being at least 1% of the total mass of the system,” said Professor Jenny Greene from <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a>, one of the lead authors of the paper.</p>

<p>This discovery has opened up new discussions about the growth of supermassive black holes and their relationship with their host galaxies in the early universe, highlighting the mysteries surrounding their origins and development.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A study led by <a href="https://tulane.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tulane University</a> has found that residing near pubs, bars, and fast-food restaurants could increase the risk of heart failure. According to the researchers, this type of food environment, often laden with unhealthy options, is associated with cardiovascular diseases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pioneering-study">Pioneering study</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hydration-reduces-the-risk-of-heart-failure/">Heart failure</a>, a condition where the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to meet the body's needs, has not been extensively studied in relation to the food environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Thus, the study is a pioneering one in examining the long-term observation of the association between food environment and heart failure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-the-food-environment-nbsp">Impact of the food environment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Most previous research on the relation between nutrition and human health has been focused on food quality, while neglecting the impact of food environment," said senior author Lu Qi, a professor of epidemiology at Tulane. “Our study highlights the importance of accounting for food environment in nutrition research.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The researchers utilized data from the <a href="https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Biobank</a>, analyzing over 500,000 adults in the UK, to investigate the proximity and density of pubs or bars, restaurants or cafeterias, and fast-food restaurants near participants' homes and its correlation with heart failure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Throughout a 12-year follow-up, nearly 13,000 heart failure cases were identified, showcasing a link between the density and proximity of ready-to-eat <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dont-say-vegan-food-labeling-should-focus-on-health-and-sustainability/">food</a> outlets and an increased risk of heart failure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-density-areas-of-pubs-and-bars">High-density areas of pubs and bars</h2>



<p>The results indicated that those living in areas with the highest density of ready-to-eat food outlets had a 16% greater risk of heart failure compared to those in areas without such outlets.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Specifically, high-density areas of pubs and bars were associated with a 14% higher risk, and areas with a high density of fast-food outlets had a 12% higher risk. Proximity to these outlets also mattered, with those living closest to pubs and bars or fast-food outlets facing a 13% and 10% higher risk, respectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigating-the-risk-of-heart-failure-nbsp">Mitigating the risk of heart failure&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to Qi, the findings were in line with expectations “because previous studies have suggested that exposure to ready-to-eat food environments is associated with risks of other disorders, such as Type 2 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-loss-can-prevent-or-reverse-diabetes/">diabetes</a> and obesity, which may also increase the risk of heart failure.”</p>



<p>The study suggests that improving access to healthier food and physical fitness facilities, particularly in urban areas, and promoting higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/every-year-of-education-reduces-mortality-risk/">education levels</a> could mitigate the increased heart failure risk associated with quick-meal options.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed-nbsp">Further research is needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>An accompanying editorial by Dr. Elissa Driggin and Dr. Ersilia M. DeFilippis from <a href="https://www.cuimc.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University Medical Center</a> calls for more detailed analyses in diverse racial and ethnic communities, noting the particular importance of focusing on food environments in high-risk populations, including those with a high incidence of heart failure.</p>



<p>“Given the clear association between Black race and high incidence of heart failure as compared to white patients, as well as associations with worse heart failure outcomes, attention to food environment in this high-risk population is of the utmost importance,” they wrote.</p>



<p>“It has already been demonstrated that compared to predominantly white neighborhoods, there are significantly fewer supermarkets in predominantly Black neighborhoods, which are likely to be inversely associated with ready-to-eat food environments.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-initiative">Broader initiative </h2>

<p>This week's X6.3 flare stands out as the largest of its kind during the current solar cycle, a period marked by the sun's magnetic field undergoing a complete reversal approximately every 11 years. We are currently in cycle 25, which began in 2019 and is anticipated to last until about 2030. </p>

<p>The cycle's progression influences the sun's activity levels, from the tranquility of the solar minimum to the tumultuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storms-will-intensify-then-slow-as-the-solar-cycle-peaks-in-early-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar maximum</a>, characterized by an increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-sunspot-archipelago-15-times-wider-than-earth-spotted-by-nasa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunspots</a> and solar flares.</p>



<p>The implications of such solar activity extend beyond the confines of space, touching down on Earth with the potential for both disruption and natural wonder. </p>



<p>The particles ejected by solar flares, taking roughly two days to reach Earth, can ignite the sky with auroras -- a spectacle traditionally confined to regions close to the poles but sometimes visible further afield under favorable conditions.</p>



<p>Beyond their visual majesty, solar flares and the related coronal mass ejections (CMEs) pose challenges to our increasingly technology-dependent world. </p>



<p>High-speed solar winds emanating from coronal holes, areas on the sun where magnetic fields open into space, can exacerbate these effects, leading to auroras and disruptions in communication systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-noaa-solar-flare-forecast-discussion">NOAA solar flare forecast discussion</h2>



<p>As mentioned above, the most striking event was the production of an X6.3/3b flare by Active Region (AR) 3590, situated at N18E26. This flare, recorded at 22:34 UTC on February 22nd, stands as the largest flare observed in this solar cycle, underscoring the dynamic nature of our sun. </p>



<p>Accompanying this event was a tenflare, reaching a peak of 240 Solar Flux Units (SFU) at 22:25 UTC the same day. Despite the magnitude of this flare, no <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-solar-outburst-detected-simultaneously-at-earth-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coronal mass ejections</a> (CMEs) were detected, indicating a lack of significant outward material ejection from the sun's corona.</p>



<p>In parallel, new solar regions have been identified and monitored. New Region 3591, located at S34E77, exhibited a moderate M1.5 flare early at 00:14 UTC on the same day. </p>



<p>Additional regions, 3592 (S12E78) and 3593 (S04W58), have also been cataloged, though they remained relatively inactive during the observed period. The absence of Earth-directed CMEs during this time provides a somewhat reassuring outlook for our planet's near-term space weather environment.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, experts anticipate sustained high solar activity through February 25th, with M-class flares expected to occur frequently. There is also a potential for X-class flares, given the recent activities of ARs 3590 and 3591. </p>



<p>This forecast underscores the ongoing vigilance required in monitoring solar phenomena and their potential impacts on space weather.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energetic-particles-and-their-influence">Energetic particles and their influence</h3>



<p>Over the past 24 hours, the solar system has experienced near-background levels of proton flux above 10 MeV, while electron flux levels above 2 MeV have been observed at normal to moderate intensities. </p>



<p>The forecast suggests a slight possibility of an S1 (Minor) proton event occurring within the next three days (February 23rd to 25th), primarily due to the potential activity from AR3590. </p>



<p>Additionally, the electron flux is expected to maintain its current levels, contributing to the overall energetic particle dynamics within Earth's vicinity.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-wind-solar-flares-and-cme">Solar wind, solar flares, and CME</h3>



<p>The solar wind environment has maintained nominal levels, with total field strength peaking at 7 nanoTeslas (nT) and wind speeds averaging near 325 km/s. </p>



<p>A noteworthy shift occurred when the solar wind's magnetic polarity switched from positive to negative around 09:00 UTC on February 23rd. </p>



<p>Forecasts predict these nominal conditions to persist through February 24th, with the influence of a CME and a Coronal Hole High Speed Stream (CH HSS) anticipated on February 25th. </p>



<p>This event is expected to pass ahead of Earth's orbit, potentially influencing the solar wind conditions encountered by our planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geospace-outlook-emerging-storm-potential">Geospace outlook: Emerging storm potential</h2>



<p>The geomagnetic field has exhibited quiet conditions, while the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) has returned to background levels. The immediate forecast indicates a continuation of these quiet conditions through February 24th. </p>



<p>However, a shift is expected on February 25th when G1 (Minor) storm levels are likely to be reached. This change is attributed to the combined effects of the February 21st CME, related to a filament eruption, and the impact of a CH HSS. </p>



<p>These phenomena highlight the interconnected nature of solar and geomagnetic activity, as well as the importance of continuous monitoring to predict and mitigate potential impacts on Earth and its technological systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>In summary, NASA's recent capture of the most powerful solar flare in seven years marks a significant event in our ongoing observation of solar phenomena. </p>



<p>This X6.3 class flare, emanating from the sun's atmosphere, underscores the dynamic and sometimes volatile nature of our closest star. </p>



<p>The NOAA warns of the potential for disruptions to Earth's technological infrastructure, including power grids and navigation systems, while also promising the breathtaking spectacle of auroras across polar skies. </p>

<p>Once vibrant and sprawling, coral reefs are now shrinking at an alarming pace. Imagine an entire state like Georgia losing all of its trees in just a few decades - that's the devastating speed at which coral reefs are vanishing.</p>



<p>However, a recent discovery by leading scientist Mark Hay and his colleague Cody Clements from <a href="https://gatech.edu/node/1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Georgia Institute of Technology</a> offers a glimmer of hope. The experts have identified an unexpected, yet crucial factor in the health and survival of coral reefs: sea cucumbers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-underwater-rainforests">Underwater rainforests</h2>

<p>Sea cucumbers belong to the same group as starfish and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-identify-the-parasite-causing-mass-mortality-in-sea-urchins/">sea urchins</a>, known as echinoderms. Their primary function is to break down debris and recycle nutrients, a critical process for maintaining healthy and balanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-stress-causes-undetected-changes-in-marine-ecosystems/">marine ecosystems</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-removal-of-sea-cucumbers">Removal of sea cucumbers</h2>



<p>The scientists conducted a unique experiment in French Polynesia and Palmyra Atoll. They carefully removed sea cucumbers from specific areas of the reef, while leaving other areas untouched. This allowed the team to directly compare the health of corals with and without the presence of sea cucumbers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By studying the consequences of removing these creatures, the researchers gained insights into their role in protecting corals from disease and death. The experiment was designed to closely resemble natural conditions, ensuring that the results accurately reflect the true impact of sea cucumbers on coral reef health.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study revealed the important, but often underestimated, role sea cucumbers play in protecting coral reefs from disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decrease-in-coral-reefs">Decrease in coral reefs</h2>



<p>The experts found that coral reefs where sea cucumbers have been removed experience much higher rates of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-oceans-intensify-viruses-that-kill-coral-reefs/">coral disease</a> and death.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sea cucumbers play a vital role in keeping the sand and soil around coral reefs clean. They act like natural vacuum cleaners, eating bits of dead plants and animal waste that sink to the bottom. This constant cleaning helps prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria and other substances that could harm the coral.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study shows that by removing these potentially harmful materials, sea cucumbers help create a healthier environment for the coral to thrive, making them less likely to get sick.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recycling-nutrients">Recycling nutrients</h2>



<p>Sea cucumbers aren't just reef janitors; they're crucial for keeping the entire ecosystem healthy. They act like recyclers by eating dead plants and animals on the seafloor. Inside their bodies, these materials are broken down and transformed into essential nutrients. These nutrients are then released back into the water, functioning like fertilizer for the diverse creatures living in the reef.</p>



<p>Without sea cucumbers, the reef faces a double threat. First, the absence of their cleaning action allows organic matter to accumulate, leading to the growth of harmful bacteria and substances that can damage the corals. Second, the missing link in the nutrient cycle creates an imbalance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Without sea cucumbers converting organic matter into usable nutrients, the reef loses its nutritional foundation, impacting the overall well-being and diversity of life in the ecosystem. This can affect not only the corals themselves, but everything that depends on them for survival.</p>



<p>“If you remove all the scum suckers in the great fish tank of Earth, you’re going to get a dirty tank eventually,” said Clements. “People have paid lip service to the idea that sea cucumbers could be important for a long time, but we didn’t know the scale of their importance until now.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threat-of-extinction-nbsp">Threat of extinction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study reveals a worrying issue: sea cucumber populations, once plentiful in many regions, are now decreasing rapidly due to being caught in large numbers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The high demand for sea cucumbers in certain foods and traditional medicine has led to a significant drop in their numbers. Sea cucumbers are a crucial food source for many marine animals, and their disappearance would cause a ripple effect throughout the food chain, potentially leading to population decline in other species. This would ultimately reduce the variety of life in the ocean (biodiversity).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-cucumber-conservation-nbsp">Sea cucumber conservation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Sea cucumbers are crucial to healthy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-atlantic-ocean-may-soon-enter-its-declining-phase/">oceans</a>, but they face threats from overharvesting.&nbsp; “If we don’t cut back on pollution, if we don’t cut back on overharvesting, and if we don’t cut back on global warming, there isn’t much hope. It’s a challenge, but you can either give up and go home, or you can keep working on it,” said Dr. Clements.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To ensure their survival and protect marine ecosystems, we need to take several steps. We must regulate how many sea cucumbers can be caught to prevent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-is-a-major-threat-to-coral-reef-fish/">overfishing</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In addition, the creation of marine protected areas would establish specific areas of the ocean where sea cucumbers could thrive without being disturbed. Furthermore, adopting sustainable trade practices - which prioritize responsible harvesting and consumption - is essential.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the vast expanse of the cosmos, our solar system might seem like a mere speck, yet it continues to reveal new wonders. Recently, astronomers announced the discovery of three additional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-four-uranus-moons-may-have-oceans-that-are-miles-deep/">moons</a>: two in orbit around Neptune and one circling Uranus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Uranus and Neptune, the solar system's ice giants, are composed primarily of a dense fluid of icy materials such as water, methane, and ammonia, above a small rocky core.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-perspective-nbsp">A new perspective&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Recent imagery has corrected misconceptions about their appearance, showing that both planets are more similar in color than previously thought. Contrary to the deep blue images captured by Voyager 2, Neptune's true color is a pale bluish-green, closely resembling Uranus, and offering a new perspective on these distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-17-exoplanets-that-have-oceans-and-possibly-alien-life/">worlds</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-three-new-moons-nbsp">Three new moons&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The newly identified moon of Uranus, which is the first discovery of its kind in over two decades, is believed to be the planet's smallest, with a diameter of merely five miles. The discoveries at Neptune include the dimmest moon ever detected with ground-based telescopes.</p>



<p>With these findings, Neptune's tally of moons increases to 16, and Uranus' count to 28, though these numbers pale in comparison to the moon collections of Jupiter and Saturn, the solar system's largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trillions-of-rogue-planets-may-be-wandering-alone-in-our-galaxy/">planets</a>, which boast 95 and 146 moons, respectively, with numbers that continue to grow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-image-processing-nbsp">Special image processing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team, led by Dr. Scott S. Sheppard from the <a href="https://carnegiescience.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carnegie Institution for Science</a>, identified these celestial bodies orbiting the solar system's two furthest planets, more than 30 million miles away.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The three newly discovered moons are the faintest ever found around these two ice giant planets using ground-based telescopes," Sheppard said. "It took special image processing to reveal such faint objects."&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smallest-moon-of-uranus-nbsp">Smallest moon of Uranus&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Uranian moon, temporarily named S/2023 U1, awaits a permanent name that will align with the tradition of naming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-photo-of-uranus-and-its-rings-and-moons-captured-by-the-webb-telescope/">Uranus</a>' moons after characters from Shakespeare's works. </p>



<p>Dr. Sheppard, utilizing the Magellan telescopes at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, first observed this moon in November of the previous year. The moon, approximately five miles in diameter, orbits Uranus every 680 days, making it potentially the smallest moon of Uranus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neptune-s-moons">Neptune's moons</h2>



<p>The brighter of the two new Neptunian moons, provisionally named S/2002 N5, discovered using the same telescope, measures about 14 miles across and completes an orbit in nearly nine years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The other, a dimmer moon named S/2021 N1, discovered with the Subaru telescope in Hawaii, has a diameter of approximately 8.5 miles and an orbital period of nearly 27 years. These moons will eventually be named after one of the 50 Nereid sea goddesses from Greek mythology, following naming conventions for Neptunian moons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-more-moons-remain-undetected">Many more moons remain undetected</h2>



<p>The moons are characterized by distant and eccentric orbits, suggesting they were captured by the gravitational pull of Uranus and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neptune-like-exoplanets-atmospheres-interesting-earth-size-neighbors/">Neptune</a> during or shortly after the planets' formation from the protoplanetary disk surrounding the early Sun. Earth's moon, by contrast, likely formed from the debris ejected after a Mars-sized body collided with Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>NASA believes thousands more moons await discovery within our solar system, though many remain elusive due to their small size and the limitations of even the most powerful telescopes. Moreover, spacecraft sent to explore the outer planets often miss these moons, depending on their position in their orbits.</p>

<p>A national poll from the <a href="https://www.uofmhealth.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Michigan Health</a> C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital sheds light on a troubling trend: a significant number of young children, specifically those aged 5-12, are frequently using personal listening devices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-use-among-younger-children-nbsp">Extensive use among younger children&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This phenomenon is not just confined to teenagers, as traditionally thought, but has extended to even younger demographics, with two in three parents acknowledging their child's engagement with such devices.</p>



<p>Overall, half of the parents of children aged 5-8 reported that their elementary-aged kids use a device. Furthermore, among those children who use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/headphones-have-a-powerfully-persuasive-effect-on-listeners/">headphones</a> and earbuds, half spend at least an hour a day with them, and one in six indulge in at least two hours of daily usage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The extensive use of audio <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-spend-the-most-time-on-devices-but-nature-offers-a-solution/">devices</a> has prompted experts to voice concerns over the potential harm from excessive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urban-noise-affects-the-color-of-songbirds-beaks/">noise exposure</a>, which has traditionally been associated with singular loud events like concerts or fireworks.</p>



<p>“Over recent years we’ve mostly been concerned about teens overusing audio devices. But earbuds have become increasingly popular and prevalent among younger kids, exposing them to more intense noise on a regular basis,” noted Dr. Susan Woolford, pediatrician and co-director of the Mott poll.</p>



<p>“Noise exposure risks to young children have historically involved loud singular events like concerts or fireworks, but parents may underestimate the potential harm from excessive use of listening devices. It may be difficult to know whether their child’s exposure to noise is healthy.”</p>



<p>According to the survey, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/using-apps-to-practice-mindfulness-improves-mental-health-of-children/">children</a> are most likely to use these devices at home, school, and in the car. On the other hand, less than 10% of parents reported usage on the bus, outside, or in bed.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.aap.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Academy of Pediatrics</a>, recognizing the growing evidence of increased noise exposure risk through personal listening devices, issued a statement in 2023 emphasizing the need to mitigate these risks for children and teens. </p>



<p>Dr. Woolford said that prolonged or extreme exposure to high volumes of noise can result in long term health issues, including hearing loss or tinnitus.</p>



<p>“Young children are more vulnerable to potential harm from noise exposure because their auditory systems are still developing. Their ear canals are also smaller than adults, intensifying perceived sound levels,” explained Dr. Woolford.</p>



<p>“Tiny hair cells inside the inner ear pick up sound waves to help you hear. When these get damaged or die, hearing loss is irreversible.”</p>



<p>Dr. Woolford added that noise exposure among children can also affect their sleep, academic learning, language, stress levels and even blood pressure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-setting-time-and-volume-limits">Setting time and volume limits</h2>



<p>Despite the prevalent usage, only half of the parents have attempted to limit their child’s audio device usage, employing strategies such as designated break times, set hours for use, and timers. Interestingly, parents whose children use headphones for more than two hours a day are less likely to set time or volume limits.</p>



<p>To combat the risks associated with noise exposure through headphones and earbuds, Dr. Woolford offers practical advice to parents. She advocates for the 60/60 rule, limiting children to no more than 60 minutes of audio device usage a day at no more than 60% of the maximum volume.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-recommendations-nbsp">Further recommendations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“A good way to tell if an audio device is too loud is if a child wearing headphones can’t hear you when you’re an arm’s length away,” she said.</p>



<p>Furthermore, Dr. Woolford recommends noise-cancelling or volume-limiting headphones, ensuring children take breaks from personal listening devices, and being vigilant for early signs of hearing loss.</p>



<p>On the other hand, children should avoid using noise-cancelling listening devices in situations when perception of sounds is crucial for safety.</p>



<p>“Noise-cancelling devices may help prevent children from increasing the volume to levels that are too high,” said Dr. Woolford. “But these devices shouldn’t be used when a child is engaged in activities where it’s important to hear their surroundings for their safety, such as walking or bike riding.”</p>



<p>Parents should help children intentionally have daily “device-free” time, said Dr. Woolford. This may involve putting away or locking the child’s audio devices when time limits are up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-signs-of-hearing-loss-nbsp">Early signs of hearing loss&nbsp;</h2>



<p>She also noted that if parents feel their child may be at risk of hearing loss due to using audio devices, they should check with a pediatrician, an audiologist, or an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist.</p>



<p>“Early signs of hearing loss may include asking for repetition, hearing ringing noises often, speaking loudly to people nearby, delayed speech, or lack of reaction to loud noises."</p>



<p>“Healthcare providers may be of assistance to parents by offering a simple explanation about hearing loss to help the child understand the reasons for limiting their use of audio devices.”</p>

<p>The presence of water is crucial for life as we understand it. Water serves as a universal solvent necessary for the biochemical reactions that sustain all known life forms. Therefore, water serves as a potentially stable habitat for organisms to thrive and evolve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-europa-s-capacity-to-support-microbial-life">Europa's capacity to support microbial life</h2>



<p>In September 2023, two independent scientific teams uncovered evidence suggesting that solid carbon dioxide (CO2) on Europa's surface likely stems from its subglacial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-atlantic-ocean-may-soon-enter-its-declining-phase/">ocean</a>. This finding, aligning with geological features indicative of material transport from beneath the ice, bolsters the case for Europa's habitability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the exact source of the CO2 remains undetermined, the identification of carbon on Europa has ignited astrobiologists' speculation about the moon's capacity to support microbial life.</p>



<p>Identifying biosignatures, such as organic carbon and water, is pivotal in the quest for extraterrestrial life. No single biosignature can definitively prove life's presence on distant worlds. </p>



<p>But, the accumulation of multiple biosignatures on celestial bodies like Europa strengthens the argument that life possibly exists beyond Earth.</p>



<p>The concept of Earth-based analog sites - extreme environments on Earth that mirror conditions on distant worlds like Europa - provides invaluable insights into life's resilience in hostile settings.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-biosignatures-nbsp">Potential biosignatures&nbsp;</h2>



<p>By studying the microbial life in these ecosystems, we gain a deeper understanding of how life can persist in environments completely inhospitable to most other life forms. These analog sites also inform researchers about potential biosignatures to look for in data from future missions to Europa.</p>



<p>Jill Mikucki, an associate professor at the <a href="https://www.utk.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tennessee, Knoxville</a>, has investigated one such analog site: Blood Falls, a feature at the terminus of Taylor Glacier in Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"It feels otherworldly to work and camp in the dry valleys," she said, further highlighting the eerie silence and the roaring winds that characterize this unique environment.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-falls">Blood Falls</h2>



<p>Blood Falls, with its iron-rich brine that oxidizes upon contact with air, offers a glimpse into the microbial life that could exist beneath Europa's ice. </p>



<p>Mikucki's research into the microbial metabolism beneath Taylor Glacier suggests an ecosystem that may have been isolated for over a million years, providing a parallel to the potential hidden worlds beneath Europa's icy crust.</p>



<p>"I think Blood Falls makes a great analog for ocean world studies because it is one of the few places where liquid transits from the below the ice to the surface," Mikucki added. "Additionally, it is briny, so it's like a mini ocean world that episodically spills out aliquots of subglacial fluids - and its microbial contents."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-space-missions">Future space missions</h2>



<p>Future missions, including the European Space Agency's <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Juice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer)</a> and <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA's Europa Clipper</a>, are set to unveil more about Europa's icy shell, subsurface ocean, and the potential for life. </p>



<p>These missions, launching in the coming years, aim to deepen our understanding of Europa and expand the horizons of life beyond Earth.</p>

<p>Researchers have recently unveiled a fascinating aspect of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mystery-solved-when-butterflies-evolved-and-what-plants-they-used-for-food/">butterfly evolution</a>. They found that species which are inedible and mimic each other's color patterns have also evolved similar flight behaviors to enhance their survival against predators.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This discovery adds a new layer to our understanding of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mystery-solved-when-butterflies-evolved-and-what-plants-they-used-for-food/">butterflies</a> use both visual and behavioral mimicry to communicate their unpalatability to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-the-scariest-predators-in-the-african-savannah/">predators</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a>, utilized high-speed video footage to analyze the flight of wild butterflies in South America.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts examined the wing beat frequency and wing angles of 351 butterflies across 38 species, all of which fell into one of 10 distinct color pattern mimicry groups.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings-nbsp">Key findings&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, the research revealed that the color pattern mimicry group a butterfly belonged to was a more significant determinant of its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterflies-habitat-influences-their-flight-behavior/">flight behavior</a> than other factors such as habitat and wing shape. This indicates that butterflies within the same mimicry group exhibit more similar flight behaviors than those that are genetically closer but display different color patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behavioral-mimicry-is-widespread-nbsp">Behavioral mimicry is widespread&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“From an evolutionary perspective it makes sense to share the color pattern between species, to reduce the individual cost of educating predators to the fact that they don’t taste nice!” said study lead author Edd Page, a PhD student from the Department of Biology at York.</p>



<p>“Once a predator has tasted one, the visual clues on others indicate that they too are also inedible, but flight patterns are more complex and are influenced by several other factors such as the air temperature and the habitat the species fly in.”</p>



<p>“We wanted to see whether flight corresponded to color - could predators be driving the mimicry of flight as well as color patterns? We were surprised to find just how strong and widespread the behavioral mimicry is.”</p>



<p>The research specifically looked at the Heliconiini tribe, which consists of around 100 species and subspecies distributed across the Neotropics, each belonging to several distinct color pattern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterflies-habitat-influences-their-flight-behavior/">mimicry</a> groups. Additionally, the study included a few species from the Ithomiine butterfly tribe, which diverged from the Heliconiini about 70 million years ago but share similar 'tiger' color patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fascinating-insights-nbsp">Fascinating insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Sharing flight behavior across multiple species seems to reinforce this ‘don’t eat me’ message. It is fascinating that this behavior has evolved between distant relatives over a long period of time," said Page, highlighting the study's implications for understanding the evolutionary strategies of these butterflies.</p>



<p>Professor Kanchon Dasmahapatra from the University of York's Department of Biology commented on the significance of the findings. "The extent of flight mimicry in this group of butterflies is amazing. It is a great example of how evolution shapes behavior, with selection from predators driving subtle changes which enhance the survival of individuals."</p>



<p>This study - published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em></a><em> - </em>not only sheds light on the intricate ways in which butterflies have adapted to avoid predation but also sets the stage for further research into the genetic basis of such behavioral mimicry.</p>

<p>Facing the global challenge of declining fish stocks, over 190 countries have committed to establishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-improve-well-being-in-coastal-communities/">marine protected areas</a> (MPAs) covering around one-third of the world's oceans by 2030. These designated zones, where fishing activities are regulated or prohibited, aim to support marine biodiversity recovery.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, a recent study reveals the potential socioeconomic challenges these MPAs pose to coastal communities reliant on fishing for sustenance, income, and cultural heritage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This analysis, led by a global team of researchers from <a href="https://duke.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a>, <a href="https://www.fsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida State University</a>, the <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Wildlife Fund</a>, and other organizations, reviewed over 14,000 fish surveys across 216 MPAs in 43 countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings underscore the effectiveness of fully protected MPAs in rejuvenating fish populations but also highlight the complexities of implementing such measures in areas where local and indigenous communities depend on fishing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ethical-considerations-nbsp">Ethical considerations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“In those under-resourced and culturally important areas, it would be unethical to take away local and indigenous people’s rights to harvest and eat fish,” said lead author David Gill, an assistant professor of marine science and conservation at Duke University’s Marine Lab. </p>



<p>This statement highlights the ethical considerations necessary when enforcing fish <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildlife-conservation-can-help-stabilize-the-climate/">conservation</a> measures that impact traditional ways of life.</p>

<p>The study suggests that multiple-use MPAs, which allow for regulated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-fleets-hidden-industrial-fishing-activity-exposed/">fishing</a>, could serve as a practical compromise.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Many people, especially those in coastal communities, have strong food, job, or cultural ties to the ocean,” said co-author Dominic Andradi-Brown, a lead marine scientist at World Wildlife Fund.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our results show that big gains for nature don't have to come at the cost of excluding people. Future ocean protection and conservation that is tailored to allow a range of uses can be successful - provided that good management is in place.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-it-s-not-all-or-nothing">It's not all or nothing</h2>



<p>The research indicates a 97% likelihood of fish population improvement within both no-take and multiple-use MPAs, contingent upon effective management and sufficient staffing.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Gill advocates for a strategic combination of these MPA types, tailored to local needs. “It's not an all-or-nothing game. There are options out there to get positive results. You can get benefits from marine protected areas where fishing is allowed. But they have to be done well.”</p>



<p>This nuanced approach to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-were-not-designed-for-climate-resilience/">marine conservation</a> aims to balance ecological objectives with the socio-economic realities of coastal communities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“A key takeaway from these results is that context matters. There is no cookie-cutter approach to effectively, and equitably, protect the world’s marine ecosystems. We need to consider what mix of conservation approaches are best for the local context and then invest in managing them fairly, and managing them well,” explained Gill.</p>



<p>This perspective calls for a considerate and adaptable strategy in the global effort to safeguard marine biodiversity while respecting human dependencies on marine resources.</p>

<p>In a new study published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41562-024-01831-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Human Behavior</em></a> on Monday, February 26, scientists have made significant strides in understanding the role of chemical neuromodulators, specifically dopamine and serotonin, in shaping <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-explores-the-basis-of-social-behavior-in-the-insect-brain/">social behavior</a>. </p>



<p>This research, which involved Parkinson's disease patients undergoing awake brain surgery, focused on the brain's substantia nigra, a key area for motor control and reward processing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurochemical-mechanism-nbsp">Neurochemical mechanism&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Led by Read Montague, a computational neuroscientist at Virginia Tech, the international team uncovered a neurochemical mechanism underlying the human propensity to make decisions based on social context. This mechanism explains why individuals are more inclined to accept offers from computers than from human counterparts in decision-making games.</p>



<p>“When people know they're playing a computer, they play perfectly, just like mathematical economists – they do what they should do. But when they're playing a human being, they cannot help themselves. They are often driven to punish the smaller bid by rejecting it,” Montague explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-influence-on-decision-making-nbsp">Chemical influence on decision-making&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study utilized the "ultimatum game" to analyze patients' responses to offer splits of $20 from both human and computer players. This setup allowed the researchers to observe the dynamic interplay between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-influences-our-motivation-to-exercise/">dopamine</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/serotonin-expedite-learning-process/">serotonin</a> in real-time, offering new insights into how these chemicals influence decision-making in social contexts.</p>



<p>“Dopamine levels are higher when people interact with another human as opposed to a computer,” said study co-author Dan Bang, an associate professor at Aarhus University in Denmark. “And here it was important that we also measured serotonin to give us confidence that the overall response to social context is specific to dopamine.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinguishing-the-roles-of-two-neurotransmitters-nbsp">Distinguishing the roles of two neurotransmitters&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“The unique twist with our method is that it allows us to measure more than one neurotransmitter at a time - the impact of that should not be lost. We’ve seen these signaling molecules before, but this is the first time we’ve seen them dance. No one has ever seen this dance of dopamine and serotonin in a social context before,” said study co-author Seth Batten, senior research associate in Montague’s lab.</p>



<p>Ken Kishida, a co-author and associate professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, discussed the challenges of interpreting the electrochemical signals, which were addressed through advanced machine-learning tools. These tools helped distinguish the specific roles of dopamine and serotonin from the raw data collected during surgery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The implications of this research extend beyond understanding social behavior, offering potential insights into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-plays-an-unexpected-role-in-movement-and-parkinsons-disease/">Parkinson’s disease</a> pathology and other brain disorders. <p>Michael Friedlander, executive director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, praised the study's potential to revolutionize neuroscience and psychiatric treatment. He highlighted the importance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-plays-an-unexpected-role-in-movement-and-parkinsons-disease/">dopamine</a>, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters in psychiatric disorders, suggesting that this research could lead to more precise and effective treatments.</p>



<p>“We have an enormous number of people in the world who suffer from a variety of psychiatric conditions, and, in many cases, the pharmacological solutions do not work very well,” said Friedlander, who is also Virginia Tech’s vice president of health sciences and technology.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters are in some ways intimately involved with those disorders. This effort adds real precision and quantitation to understand those problems. The one thing I think we can be sure of is this work is going to be extremely important in the future for developing treatments.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This study marks a culmination of over a decade of effort by Montague and his team to measure neurotransmitters in real-time in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-invent-computer-that-operates-just-like-the-human-brain/">human brain</a>, opening new avenues for understanding the neurochemical underpinnings of human cognition and behavior.</p>



<p>“We've made active measurements of neurotransmitters multiple times in different brain regions, and we have now reached the point where we're touching on crucial elements of what makes us human beings,” Montague concluded.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. <p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>



<p>Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.</p>



<p>While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.</p>

Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
