<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Climate change is making <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-rivers-always-recover-from-floods/">floods</a> worse and more common around the world. Professor Lindsey McEwen, Director of the Centre for Water, Communities and Resilience at the <a href="https://www.uwe.ac.uk/">University of the West of England</a>, warns that extreme floods will happen more frequently and become more damaging. This means that people need to change how they prepare for and deal with flood risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-floods">Consequences of floods</h2>



<p>Multiple scientists agree that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/">climate change</a> will cause more frequent and intense floods.&nbsp; This prediction, based on extensive research and modeling, considers the impact of rising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lakes-are-struggling-to-maintain-oxygen-as-temperatures-rise/">temperatures</a>, changing precipitation patterns, and other climate-related factors.</p>



<p>The consequences of flooding are far-reaching, impacting the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cigarette-butts-leak-thousands-of-deadly-toxins-into-the-environment/">environment</a>, economy, and society. Floods destroy habitats, pollute water sources, damage infrastructures, disrupt businesses, and force people from their homes. These problems are all connected, making it hard to solve them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vulnerable-communities">Vulnerable communities</h2>



<p>Floods do not affect everyone equally and this means that not every community can prepare for flood risks the same way. Some have easier access to information, like flood warnings, or have more people who can get organized and work together. They might also have tools to help stop floods. </p>



<p>This isn't fair, and it makes it harder for some communities to protect themselves during floods. Without the right knowledge, power to act, and resources, it's much harder to keep people safe from floods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-europe-s-rising-tide">Europe's rising tide</h2>



<p>Europe provides a stark example of flood consequences. Experts predict yearly flood costs to jump from $5.724 billion USD to $43.2 billion USD by 2050. This significant increase stems from several factors, including the growing value of assets in flood-prone areas, the higher frequency and severity of floods, and potential delays in implementing effective flood resilience measures.</p>



<p>Beyond economic losses, the human cost is also staggering. The number of people affected by floods in Europe alone is expected to jump from 200,000 to over 500,000 by 2050.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-centric-flood-management">Community-centric flood management</h2>



<p>For over 20 years, Professor McEwen has focused on floods and worked with communities facing them. She stresses that these communities are essential to handling flood risks and minimizing disaster damage.</p>



<p>Building walls and other traditional solutions funded by the government are important, but they're not enough. Even with these measures in place, there's still a chance of flooding (called "residual risk"). This makes community involvement critical.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-misconception-about-government-responsibility">Misconception about government responsibility</h3>



<p>Not everyone trusts communities to help with flood protection, thinking it lets the government off the hook. But that's not true.</p>



<p>Both communities and governments have important roles to play, and working together leads to better flood plans. When everyone joins forces, we can make our communities more resilient to floods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-path-forward">The path forward</h2>



<p>Climate change demands a shift in how we approach flood protection. While traditional methods like dams and levees serve a purpose, they alone cannot withstand the rising tide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Investing in large infrastructure projects as the sole flood management solution simply hasn’t reduced ecological, financial and even sentimental losses,” explained McEwen. “Investment in defen­sive infrastructure alone, with its costs and design limits, can only be part of the solution.”</p>



<p>She suggests we must build resilience, and that goes beyond physical structures. “Flood risk management is all about how we shift the focus away from reactive responses to preparation and resilience at the household and community level. Much of that residual risk management needs to happen at a local level, but people might not have the necessary information, skills or resources to do this.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-flood-resilient-communities">Building flood-resilient communities</h2>



<p>“A key question is how to increase community participation and agency when there is expectation of a key role of the state still pervades. There is a wider perceived disconnect between citizens and water in the developed world,” said McEwen.</p>



<p>Communities need comprehensive plans, early warning systems, and robust education programs to prepare for floods. Engaging local knowledge and understanding vulnerabilities through collaborative efforts are key.</p>



<p>Wealth disparities can worsen flood impacts. We must identify vulnerable populations, ensure equal access to resources and planning, and develop solutions that consider diverse needs and capabilities.</p>



<p>Strong social networks, empowered leadership, and collective action are vital. Communities working together, sharing information, and taking responsibility for preparedness can face floods head-on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change-nbsp">More about the flood risks of climate change&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Climate change significantly increases the risk of flooding in various parts of the world. As the Earth's atmosphere warms due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases, weather patterns become more extreme and unpredictable. </p>



<p>This warming causes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-pose-great-threat-to-biodiversity-in-mountain-ranges/">glaciers</a> and ice caps to melt, contributing to a rise in sea levels, which in turn increases the likelihood of coastal flooding.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warmer-atmosphere">Warmer atmosphere</h3>



<p>Additionally, a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to more intense and frequent rainstorms. Heavy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-will-wreak-havoc-on-mountain-ranges-as-warming-climate-turns-snow-to-rain/">rainfall</a> can overwhelm drainage systems and natural waterways, causing flash floods and river floods.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-areas">Urban areas</h3>



<p>Urban areas, often with impervious surfaces like concrete and asphalt, face heightened flood risks. These materials prevent water from being absorbed into the ground, exacerbating runoff and flooding.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Climate change also influences the severity and frequency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-causes-the-rapid-intensification-of-hurricanes/">hurricanes</a> and cyclones. These storms bring heavy rains and storm surges, further increasing flood risks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a world characterized by instant gratification, waiting emerges as a universally dreaded experience. Yet, it's an inevitable part of our daily lives, whether we're stuck in traffic or eagerly anticipating the results of an election. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/faculty-and-research/faculty-directory/annabelle-roberts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Annabelle Roberts</a>, an assistant marketing professor at <a href="https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas McCombs</a>, delves into this common human experience through her insightful research. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closer-look-decision-making-and-waiting">Closer look: Decision-making and waiting</h2>



<p>Roberts' studies, detailed in two new papers, shed light on the intricate dance of patience and impatience, revealing the significant role of closure in managing our waiting experiences.</p>



<p>Her work also offers lessons on what marketers can do to make waiting less annoying. She says, “Everyone has had this experience of getting overly frustrated while they’re waiting.”</p>



<p>Roberts' research centers on the impact of the desire for closure on our patience levels. In one study, she collaborates with Alex Imas and Ayelet Fishbach from the <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a> to explore how this need influences our decisions, particularly when faced with the option of receiving a reward now versus later. </p>



<p>Their findings illustrate a counterintuitive truth. People often prefer to exert more effort or pay more upfront to achieve closure sooner. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>In a series of studies carried out both online and in laboratory settings, participants faced choices that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traffic-pollution-impairs-brain-network-connectivity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tested their patience</a>: either to undertake more work immediately or to defer the effort for a lesser workload later, with the outcome remaining constant. </p>



<p>The studies found that participants leaned towards options that granted them closure more swiftly, manifesting a willingness to either pay a premium or exert additional effort. </p>



<p>Specifically, they opted to pay an extra dollar if it meant they could settle payments promptly and eliminate the pending task from their mental checklist.</p>



<p>Similarly, the option to complete 15% more work upfront for identical compensation was more appealing if it enabled them to conclude the task sooner. </p>



<p>Furthermore, faced with the desire to clear their minds before a vacation, participants chose to work an extra hour without pay to finalize a report, over the option of completing it for pay upon their return.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impatience-paradox-when-waiting-becomes-too-much">Impatience paradox: When waiting becomes too much</h2>



<p>This phenomenon highlights a deeper aspect of impatience -- it's not merely about the eagerness to obtain a reward but also about the relief that comes from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/switching-lines-wait-shorter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">completing goals</a>. </p>



<p>"The need for goal closure helps explain the counterintuitive preference for working more sooner or paying more sooner," Roberts explains. "It’s also about crossing goals off their list, not having the goal hanging over them."</p>



<p>Roberts' insights hold valuable lessons for both management and marketing. Understanding that the desire for closure can motivate people to avoid procrastination, managers can devise strategies to enhance team motivation effectively. </p>



<p>Moreover, the research provides a critique of marketing promotions like "buy now, pay later" deals, suggesting that consumers might reject these offers to avoid the looming stress of future payments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emotional-trajectory-of-waiting">Emotional trajectory of waiting</h2>



<p>Roberts' second paper, in collaboration with Fishbach, delves into the emotional journey of waiting. Their research reveals that the distress associated with waiting intensifies as the end approaches. </p>



<p>“This paper was about people's feelings, their experiences while they wait,” Roberts says. “When you expect the wait to be ending soon, you become more impatient closer to that expectation.”</p>



<p>This was observed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/patience-is-a-virtue/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">real-life scenarios</a>, such as the anticipation for the COVID-19 vaccine or the arrival of a bus, where individuals reported increasing levels of impatience as they neared the moment of fulfillment. </p>



<p>This trend was also evident during the 2020 presidential election, with supporters of both candidates experiencing heightened impatience as the vote counting progressed.</p>



<p>“Even for those who expected their candidate wasn’t going to win, they just wanted to get this over with,” Roberts says. “This nicely demonstrates the desire for closure and how it plays out in the experience of waiting.”</p>



<p>Roberts suggests practical applications of her findings for businesses, especially in managing customer expectations around waiting times. </p>



<p>She advises that companies prepare customers for longer waits to mitigate impatience and communicate any delays early in the waiting period, allowing customers to adjust their expectations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-focus-beyond-immediate-gratification">Future focus: Beyond immediate gratification</h2>



<p>As Roberts continues her research, she aims to identify interventions that can help individuals manage their waiting experiences more effectively. </p>



<p>"I want my research to help people manage their waiting experiences," she states, emphasizing the importance of developing strategies that enable people to make better decisions, such as saving for the future, by enhancing their patience.</p>



<p>In summary, Dr. Annabelle Roberts' pioneering research analyzes the psychological underpinnings of impatience, offering valuable insights into how the need for closure drives decision-making and emotional responses during periods of waiting. </p>



<p>By dissecting the motivations behind our desire to expedite tasks and the intensifying distress as waits draw to a close, Roberts enhances our understanding of human behavior and provides practical guidance for individuals and businesses alike. </p>

<p>Wetlands, the most extensive natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-seas-release-more-methane-from-wetlands-than-expected/">methane</a> sources on Earth, are contributing significantly to atmospheric warming, with methane being around 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A study led by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-seas-release-more-methane-from-wetlands-than-expected/">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a> (Berkeley Lab) has revealed a concerning trend. Methane emissions from the Boreal-Arctic wetlands have surged by approximately nine percent since 2002. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accelerated-warming-rates-nbsp">Accelerated warming rates&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This rise is particularly alarming given the accelerated warming rates in Boreal and Arctic ecosystems, which are currently warming at nearly four times the global average.</p>



<p>The study was led by Qing Zhu, a Berkeley Lab research scientist, along with postdoctoral researcher Kunxiaojia Yuan. Their work leverages advanced monitoring techniques to quantify the uptick in emissions over the last two decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Boreal and Arctic environments are carbon-rich and vulnerable to warming. Rising temperatures increase microbial activity and vegetation growth, which are associated with methane emissions. By understanding how natural methane sources are evolving, we can better track greenhouse gasses critical for projecting future climate change scenarios,” Zhu explained.</p>

<p>The study underscores methane's significant impact on atmospheric warming, despite its shorter atmospheric lifespan compared to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-news-plants-are-absorbing-more-human-produced-co2-than-expected/">carbon dioxide</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the researchers, higher temperatures not only boost the activity of methane-producing microbes in saturated soils but also expand their habitat as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/time-traveling-pathogens-from-melting-permafrost-pose-great-risk-to-the-earth/">permafrost</a> thaws and precipitation patterns shift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-results">Alarming results</h2>



<p>Employing a combination of traditional gas trapping and eddy covariance towers, the Berkeley Lab team analyzed over 307 years' worth of methane emissions data from Arctic-Boreal wetlands.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their findings indicate an average annual release of 20 teragrams of methane since 2002, equating to the mass of roughly 55 Empire State Buildings, with a notable nine percent increase in emissions during this period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-new-insights">Critical new insights</h2>



<p>The study also identifies two "hotspot" regions with significantly higher emissions, emphasizing the importance of focused mitigation efforts in these areas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis further reveals temperature and plant productivity as key drivers of methane emissions, with warmer conditions and more productive vegetation leading to increased microbial activity and, consequently, higher methane release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The year 2016, marked as the warmest in the high-latitudes since 1950, also recorded the highest methane emissions, underscoring the direct correlation between temperature elevations and methane release.</p>



<p>However, according to Zhu, since “methane has a relatively short lifetime in the atmosphere, its reduction and removal can be achieved relatively quickly.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research provides a scientific baseline for comprehending wetlands' role in global climate dynamics and addressing climate change.</p>

<p>Drainage, agriculture, and the construction of dams can reduce wetland areas and their capacity to emit methane. Conversely, restoration of wetlands and creation of artificial wetlands can increase methane emissions.</p>

<p>Globally, wetlands represent the largest natural source of methane emissions to the atmosphere. Despite their contribution to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-plans-to-eliminate-greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-power-plants-by-2040/">greenhouse gas emissions</a>, wetlands also provide critical ecosystem services, including biodiversity conservation. </p>

<p>This finding challenges the traditional dichotomy of mutualism and parasitism, illuminating the intricate evolution of plant-pollinator relationships.</p>

<p>Most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-plant-communication-on-video/">plants</a> engage animals for pollination by offering them rewards. However, the Arisaema genus stands out for its unique approach, trapping pollinators to ensure <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weevils-the-unknown-and-underappreciated-pollination-heroes/">pollination</a> at a fatal cost.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is famous as the only plant that achieves pollination at the expense of the pollinator's life,” said Kobe University biologist Suetsugu Kenji. The plant entices fungus gnats with its musky scent, only to trap them inescapably within its female flowers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Driven by a commitment to expand the boundaries of pollination biology, Suetsugu and his team delved into the genus Arisaema. The goal was to uncover more complex interactions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research focused on the species A. thunbergii, commonly known as Asian jack-in-the-pulpit. The team investigated the fate of both male and female flowers and the insects ensnared by them.</p>

<p>The study revealed that the primary pollinator, the fungus gnat Leia ishitanii, uses the flowers as a breeding ground. The larvae feed on the decaying floral matter and eventually emerge as adults.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Intriguingly, some gnats were observed escaping from flowers unharmed, suggesting a possibility of survival and escape from the floral trap.</p>



<p>“This finding adds a new dimension to our knowledge of plant-insect interactions," Suetsugu remarked, highlighting the continuous potential for discovery within well-explored fields.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-nursery-pollination-mutualism">Evolution of nursery pollination mutualism</h2>



<p>Suetsugu argued that the relationship between A. thunbergii and its pollinators might not fully align with typical nursery mutualism. Trapped gnats lose future reproductive opportunities, yet some level of mutual benefit exists, unseen in other Arisaema species.</p>



<p>Thus, this interaction may represent a transitional phase in the evolution of nursery pollination mutualism, suggesting a shift from deceptive to mutualistic relationships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Suetsugu, further examination of the Arisaema genus may reveal more examples of such complex interactions, underscoring the importance of revisiting and refining models of pollination biology to encompass a broader spectrum of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urbanization-alters-the-dynamics-of-plant-pollinator-networks/">plant-pollinator dynamics</a>.</p>

<p>A recent study highlights a concerning link between sleep deprivation and increased cardiovascular risks among middle-aged women. Conducted by researchers at the <a href="https://www.pitt.edu/">University of Pittsburgh</a>, the investigation followed nearly 3,000 women aged 42 to 52 over a span of 16 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Through annual surveys, the study meticulously tracked the participants' sleep patterns. <p>The analysis unveiled a stark finding: women who consistently slept fewer than five hours per night were at a risk up to 75 percent higher of encountering severe cardiovascular issues such as strokes, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-people-die-from-heart-attacks-during-the-holidays/">heart attacks</a>, heart failure, and coronary artery disease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the correlation persisted even after adjusting for other risk factors like BMI and pre-existing health conditions. This suggests that there is a direct link between short sleep duration and cardiovascular health.</p>



<p>The researchers propose that insufficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-counteracts-negative-effects-of-sleep-deprivation/">sleep</a> might escalate blood pressure levels and foster insulin resistance, both of which can lead to vascular damage. Another concern is an increased obesity risk due to disrupted regulation of hunger caused by lack of sleep.</p>

<p>This issue is particularly prevalent among middle-aged women, half of whom reportedly do not achieve the suggested seven hours of sleep, placing them at heightened risk for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-mortality-risk-escalated-by-climate-change/">heart disease</a>, especially as estrogen levels decline post-menopause, affecting blood vessel flexibility and heart blood flow.</p>

<p>The study, featured in the American Heart Association's journal<em> </em><a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.066491"><em>Circulation</em></a>, utilized data from the extensive <a href="https://www.swanstudy.org/">Study of Women's Health Across the Nation</a> (SWAN), which has been observing thousands of women for over 22 years. Throughout this period, 200 cardiovascular events were recorded, including 23 fatalities.</p>

<p>The experts report that outbreaks of desert locusts could increase in frequency and severity due to erratic weather patterns fueled by global warming.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In particular, the researchers found that extreme weather events such as increased rainfall and extreme wind conditions may lead to bigger and worse desert locust outbreaks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasingly-difficult-outbreaks-nbsp">Increasingly difficult outbreaks&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Desert locusts are found in dry areas of northern and eastern Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. They thrive in conditions where extreme rainfall follows prolonged periods of aridity. These conditions create ideal breeding grounds for these pests.</p>



<p>A square-kilometer swarm contains 80 million locusts. In a single day, this swarm can wipe out enough food crops to feed 35,000 people. The study authors said these outbreaks will be increasingly hard to prevent and control in a warming climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-major-hotspots-for-desert-locusts">Major hotspots for desert locusts</h2>



<p>With an analysis of incidents from 1985 to 2020, the study underscores a significant correlation between climate change and locust outbreaks. Notably, the researchers identified ten countries, including Kenya, Morocco, Niger, Yemen, and Pakistan, as major hotspots among 48 affected nations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research brings to light the worst outbreak in 25 years, which struck East Africa in 2019 and 2020. The outbreak caused unprecedented agricultural damage and threatened the livelihoods of millions by impacting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungal-infections-are-threatening-global-food-security/">food security</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-favorable-conditions-for-outbreaks-nbsp">Favorable conditions for outbreaks&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Professor Xiaogang He at the <a href="https://nus.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National University of Singapore</a>, who led the research, said more extreme weather events will add unpredictability to locust outbreaks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers linked the magnitude of desert locust outbreaks to specific weather and land conditions, such as air <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-global-temperature-exceeded-2c-for-the-first-time/">temperature</a>, precipitation, soil moisture, and wind patterns. The study also highlights the role of El Niño in exacerbating the conditions favorable for locust outbreaks.</p>



<p>Douglas Tallamy is a professor of Entomology at the University of Delaware who was not part of the research. He noted that erratic weather and rainfall trigger spurts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vegetation-impacts-energy-movement-in-the-arctic/">vegetation</a> and therefore fuels enormous population growth in locusts. "As such variability increases, it is logical to predict that locust outbreaks will increase as well," said Tallamy.</p>

<p>As the habitats of these pests expand and the frequency of extreme weather events rises, the global community faces a critical challenge in safeguarding food production systems against the looming threat of increased locust activity.</p>

<p>Countries affected by desert locust outbreaks are already grappling with climate-driven extremes like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flash-droughts-are-becoming-the-new-normal/">droughts</a>, floods and heat waves, and the potential escalation of locust risks in these regions could exacerbate existing challenges, said Professor He. "Failure to address these risks could further strain food production systems and escalate the severity of global food insecurity."</p>



<p>He hopes the study will help countries understand the climate impacts on locusts, particularly in the context of food security. He also urges for better regional and continental cooperation to respond quickly and build early warning systems.</p>

<p>This innovative model, detailed in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43587-023-00557-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Aging</em></a>, is capable of identifying genetic differences that either decelerate or accelerate the aging process, offering a clearer understanding of aging mechanisms and the effectiveness of anti-aging interventions.</p>



<p>“Previous clocks considered the relationship between methylation patterns and features we know are correlated with aging, but they don’t tell us which factors cause one’s body to age faster or slower. We have created the first clock to distinguish between cause and effect,” said senior author Vadim Gladyshev, an expert in genetics at <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BWH</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-biological-age-research">Shift in biological age research </h2>

<p>The study leverages a vast genetic dataset to perform an epigenome-wide Mendelian Randomization on 20,509 CpG sites related to eight aging traits. </p>



<p>Kejun (Albert) Ying, the study's first author, helped with the creation of three models - CausAge, DamAge, and AdaptAge - to analyze and interpret these relationships. </p>



<p>These models were meticulously trained using blood samples from the "Generation Scotland Cohort," comprising individuals aged 18 to 93 years.</p>

<p>The findings underscore the complex interplay between genetic inheritance and lifestyle factors in determining the rate of aging among individuals.</p>



<p>Further validation of these epigenetic clocks was conducted using data from the Framingham Heart Study and the Normative Aging Study, revealing correlations between DamAge and adverse health outcomes and AdaptAge with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-induced-increases-in-biological-age-can-be-reversed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increased longevity</a>. </p>



<p>The clocks also demonstrated their utility in evaluating the rejuvenation potential of reprogrammed stem cells, with DamAge scores indicating a reduction in age-related damage.</p>

<p>By applying these clocks to biological samples from patients with chronic conditions and lifestyle-induced damage, the researchers were able to differentiate between conditions exacerbating age-related damage and those associated with protective adaptations.</p>



<p>"Aging is a complex process, and we still do not know what interventions against it actually work," said Gladyshev. "Our findings present a step forward for aging research, allowing us to more accurately quantify biological age and evaluate the ability of novel aging interventions to increase longevity."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As discussed above, biological aging, also known as senescence, is the gradual decline in physiological function and integrity that organisms experience as they get older. This process involves changes at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecular-level">Molecular level</h3>



<p>At the molecular level, aging is characterized by the accumulation of damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids, caused by factors such as environmental stresses and normal metabolic processes. This damage can lead to mutations, disruptions in cellular function, and the loss of cellular integrity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Telomere shortening, which occurs each time a cell divides, also plays a significant role. Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division, eventually leading to cellular senescence or apoptosis (programmed cell death) when they become too short.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-age-at-the-cellular-level">Biological age at the cellular level</h3>



<p>Cellular aging is marked by a decrease in the cell's ability to divide (replicative senescence), an increase in the number of senescent cells that resist apoptosis, and a decline in the efficiency of cellular repair mechanisms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The global battle against COVID-19 has unveiled many mysteries about how the virus affects the human body, including its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-death-toll-of-covid-19-pandemic-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact on the brain</a>. </p>



<p>Early in the pandemic, the direct infection of the brain by SARS-CoV-2 was considered a potential cause for the neurological symptoms observed in patients. </p>



<p>But now, research conducted by <a href="https://www.charite.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin </a> has provided evidence that points in another direction. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complex-interactions-nbsp">Complex interactions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The detailed study offers insight into the complex interaction between the virus, the immune system, and brain function, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms that lead to neurological symptoms in COVID-19 patients.</p>



<p>One of the most perplexing aspects of COVID-19 infection has been the range of neurological symptoms that patients experience, including headaches, memory problems, and fatigue, which can persist long after the acute phase of the infection has passed. </p>



<p>Initially, researchers theorized that these symptoms could be due to the virus directly infecting the brain.</p>



<p>“We took that as our hypothesis at the start, too. But so far, there has been no clear evidence that the coronavirus can persist in the brain, let alone proliferate,” explained Dr. Helena Radbruch, head of the Chronic Neuroinflammation working group at the Department of Neuropathology at Charité.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For that, we would have needed to find evidence of intact virus particles in the brain, for example. Instead, the indications that the coronavirus could infect the brain come from indirect testing methods, so they aren’t entirely conclusive.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-covid-and-inflammation">Studying COVID and inflammation </h2>



<p>This lack of clarity led the Charité team to explore alternative explanations for the neurological impacts of COVID-19.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study involved detailed molecular biology and anatomical analyses of brain tissue from 21 individuals who succumbed to severe coronavirus infections in hospital settings, typically in an ICU.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analyses were compared against those of nine patients who died of other causes after ICU treatment. </p>



<p>While the team did find coronavirus genetic material in the brain in some cases, they discovered no neurons infected by SARS-CoV-2. </p>



<p>This led to the conclusion that while the virus can be carried into the brain by immune cells, it does not infect brain cells directly.</p>



<p>“We assume that immune cells absorbed the virus in the body and then traveled to the brain. They’re still carrying the virus, but it doesn’t infect cells of the brain. So coronavirus has invaded other cells in the body, but not the brain itself," explained Radbruch.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights">Critical insights</h2>



<p>The research suggests that neurological symptoms may arise as a side effect from the body's powerful immune response to the virus. </p>



<p>Notably, the study found significant changes in molecular processes within some brain cells of those infected with COVID-19. </p>



<p>These changes included an increased activation of the interferon signaling pathway, a common response to viral infections, indicating that some neurons react to inflammation elsewhere in the body.</p>



<p>“Some neurons evidently react to the inflammation in the rest of the body,” said Professor Christian Conrad, head of the Intelligent Imaging working group at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH).</p>



<p>“This molecular reaction could be a good explanation for the neurological symptoms we see in COVID-19 patients. For example, neurotransmitters emitted by these cells in the brainstem could cause fatigue. That’s because the brainstem is home to groups of cells that control drive, motivation, and mood.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-the-vagus-nerve-nbsp">The role of the vagus nerve&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to the researchers, the reactive nerve cells were found primarily in what are known as the nuclei of the vagus nerve. These cells are located in the brainstem and extend to organs such as the lungs, intestine, and heart.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In simplified terms, our interpretation of our data is that the vagus nerve ‘senses’ the inflammatory response in different organs of the body and reacts to it in the brainstem – without there being any actual infection of brain tissue,” explained Radbruch. “Through this mechanism, the inflammation does spread from the body to the brain in a way, which can disrupt brain function.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-covid-inflammation">Broader implications of COVID inflammation</h2>



<p>The study not only challenges the initial hypothesis that COVID-19's neurological symptoms are due to direct brain infection but also opens new avenues for understanding how inflammation in the body can impact brain function.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers observed that the neurons' reaction to inflammation is temporary, with molecular changes normalizing after the acute infection phase. </p>



<p>However, they speculate that chronic inflammation could underlie the persistent neurological symptoms seen in some long COVID patients, a theory they plan to investigate further.</p>



<p>“We think it’s possible that if the inflammation becomes chronic, that could be what causes the neurological symptoms often observed in long COVID in some people,” said Conrad.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Going forward, the team is planning to study the molecular signatures in the cerebral fluid of long COVID patients.</p>

<p>Rivers are complex and crucial parts of our planet. From playful otters to towering salmon, countless creatures call rivers home, relying on their ever-flowing waters for survival.&nbsp;</p>



<p>But what happens when powerful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flash-floods-are-set-to-become-much-more-common-in-the-u-s/">floods</a> disrupt this delicate balance? Scientists from the <a href="https://www.unr.edu/">University of Nevada, Renohas</a> created a model in their lab to answer this question.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results challenge our previous ideas about how well rivers can recover from floods and other disturbances. The research provides a new perspective on the delicate balance of life in these flowing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-dust-plays-surprisingly-crucial-role-in-stabilizing-ocean-ecosystems/">ecosystems</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-resilience-of-the-river-ecosystem-nbsp">The resilience of the river ecosystem&nbsp;</h2>



<p>After floods, the rising water in a river might seem insignificant, but beneath the surface, a battle for survival is waged. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-plant-communication-on-video/">Plants</a> and algae, known as autotrophic biomass, face the flood's fury. How quickly they recover after the flood subsides determines the resilience of the entire river ecosystem.</p>



<p>The researchers set out to gain a better understanding of the resilience of the river ecosystem. They developed a clever method using underwater sensors that monitor oxygen levels of 143 rivers.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-window-into-post-flood-recovery-nbsp">A window into post-flood recovery&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This data, fed into their specially designed latent biomass time series (LB-TS) model, revealed a hidden treasure: the daily growth rate of the vital biomass. This model acted as a window into their post-flood recovery, a real-time glimpse into their fight for survival.</p>



<p>"Previously, you would have to go to a river and scrub rocks to measure the algae, and do that several times for an extended period of time in order to estimate changes in biomass growth and loss," said study lead author Joanna R. Blaszczak. "This is very time consuming, so the data have been extremely limited relative to how extensive our sensor networks are."</p>



<p>"The dissolved oxygen sensors show the peak during the day, and the low during the night, and from those patterns, you can estimate how much new algae and other biomass grew that day."</p>



<p>"With the sensors measuring data continuously in hundreds of rivers for years now, we can get a much bigger, clearer picture. The data is there, and we can use it to model the size of flood needed to disturb the biomass in a river, as well as the rate at which a river recovers from flood disturbances, which can help us manage rivers more effectively."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recovering-from-disruptions">Recovering from disruptions</h2>



<p>Traditionally, scientists believed rivers could handle natural floods pretty well. But the research shows rivers might be more sensitive to changes in water flow than we realized.</p>



<p>Different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hypoxia-is-a-serious-problem-in-rivers-worldwide/">rivers</a> recover from disruptions like floods at different speeds. Some bounce back quickly (2 days), while others take longer (14 days).</p>



<p>Normally, we judge a river's flood resistance based on how often it can handle major floods without damage. But it turns out, even smaller changes in water flow can hurt how much life the river supports.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This means our current ways of managing rivers might not be enough. If they're truly more sensitive than we thought, we need to change our approach. This could involve using less water, fixing floodplains, and making plans that better consider the specific needs of each river.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-river-width-and-dams">River width and dams</h2>



<p>Wider rivers bounce back faster from floods than narrow ones, especially if they don't have dams upstream. This study shows that both a river's size and human impacts affect how well it recovers from floods.</p>



<p>Wider rivers spread flood waters out more, which makes the water flow slower and gentler. This gentler flow causes less damage to the plants and animals living in the river, so they can recover more quickly.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dams, on the other hand, mess up the natural flow of water, sand, and nutrients in the river, making it harder for the ecosystem to bounce back after a flood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-contributing-factors">Additional contributing factors</h2>



<p>Rivers deal with many factors- light, water, plants, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazon-animals-will-suffer-as-the-rainforest-turns-into-savanna/">animals</a> all play crucial roles. Sunlight acts like fuel for the river ecosystem, powering the growth of plants and algae. Water flow acts like a delivery service, bringing nutrients, shaping the riverbed, and controlling the pace of everything happening.</p>



<p>When a flood disrupts this balance, changes in sunlight and water flow can affect the ecosystem's "food production" (how much organic matter is generated) and its structure (how different organisms are arranged).</p>



<p>Animals like fish and insects play a role in recovering from the disturbance. They eat algae, preventing it from taking over completely, but they can also overeat and slow down the growth of new plants.</p>



<p>Talking about plants, floods can mix things up by moving them around, favoring certain species over others. Initially, fast-growing types might dominate, but as things settle down, a more diverse group usually arrives. This shift in plant life affects everything from nutrient movement to animal habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications">Study implications</h2>



<p>Healthy rivers are vital for clean water, diverse plant and animal life, and strong communities. This study helps us understand how floods affect rivers, which is crucial for protecting their health.</p>



<p>The study focuses on "thresholds": points where floods become harmful to the river ecosystem. Knowing these thresholds is key to managing and protecting rivers effectively. By identifying them, we can take action beforehand, like adjusting dam releases or reinforcing riverbanks, to prevent major damage.</p>



<p>This knowledge is even more important with climate change increasing the number and intensity of floods. We need strong conservation strategies to protect rivers in the face of these challenges.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
