<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of British Columbia</a> have found alarming evidence about the accumulation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-shows-how-microplastics-are-harming-global-soil-and-agriculture/">microplastics</a> in the food web of the Galápagos Islands. The study suggests that the endangered Galápagos penguin is the most affected by this growing environmental concern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-impact-of-microplastics-nbsp">Environmental impact of microplastics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research, led by Karly McMullen under the guidance of Dr. Juan José Alava and Dr. Evgeny A. Pakhomov, presents a concerning picture of the environmental impact of microplastics. These include small plastic particles less than five millimeters in size, </p>



<p>Microplastics have been a topic of increasing concern due to their pervasive presence in marine environments and potential impacts on wildlife.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-indicator-species-nbsp">Indicator species&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers' focus on the Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) provides a critical view of how plastic particles are moving through and impacting a relatively isolated ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This penguin, unique to the Galápagos Islands, serves as a key indicator for understanding the broader implications of microplastic pollution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts used two models to simulate microplastic movement within the food web, incorporating data collected around Santa Cruz Island in October 2021.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The island, home to human settlements and penguin colonies, offered a pertinent site for examining microplastic interactions between urbanized areas and natural habitats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed samples from various sources, including seawater, zooplankton, fish species that are part of the penguin's diet, and penguin feces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-findings-nbsp">Alarming findings&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Both models revealed a significant and rapid increase in microplastic accumulation within the first five years of an organism's life. This was followed by a more gradual increase and eventual stabilization.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Notably, the Galápagos penguin exhibited the highest levels of microplastic per unit of biomass. This was followed by other species in its food chain, such as the barracuda, anchovy, sardine, herring, salema, and predatory zooplankton.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers also predicted the biomagnification of microplastics across predator-prey relationships, highlighting the rate of excretion as a crucial factor in the net accumulation rate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-knowledge-gap-nbsp">Key knowledge gap&nbsp;</h2>



<p>McMullen emphasized the importance of understanding the behavior and residence time of microplastics within organisms.</p>



<p>“The model predictions highlight a key knowledge gap in microplastics science, specifically the accumulation behavior and residence time of microplastics in the gut," said McMullen.</p>



<p>"With microplastics emerging as a prominent ocean pollutant, entering the environment every day, there is a growing concern for marine fauna and coastal wildlife. To understand microplastics' effects on wildlife and food webs, future research must address how these diverse plastics behave after ingestion."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-threat-of-microplastics-nbsp">Growing threat of microplastics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“The finding of microplastics in the Galápagos penguin, fish prey, and plankton that form part of its food web is undoubtedly worrisome because it shows the globalization of this emerging anthropogenic threat for the conservation of the Galápagos, proving that microplastics can reach isolated and protected areas, such as The Galápagos Archipelago, across thousands of kilometers," said study co-author Hernán Vargas.</p>



<p>"Plastic pollution may also affect the public health of human residents inhabiting the islands. As a global threat to ecosystems, global remedies are required to solve it.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study co-author Paola Calle noted that having demonstrated the potential bioaccumulation and biomagnification of microplastics in the Galápagos penguin food web alerts us to the potential that these microparticles have on entering and potentially exert adverse effects on the endemic and unique biota of the Galápagos.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Therefore, we must raise awareness, actions and public policies that allow us to protect and conserve the endemic and native fauna of the islands.”</p>

Galápagos penguins at risk from microplastics in polluted food web

<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pumping-too-much-groundwater-affects-earths-spin/">Groundwater</a>, a crucial resource hidden beneath our feet, is declining across the globe. A comprehensive analysis from <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Barbara</a> indicates that groundwater depletion is not only a growing concern but is also accelerating. However, the experts report that proactive management can reverse these troubling trends.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-research">Extensive research</h2>



<p>Spanning nearly 1,700 aquifers and based on an analysis of 300 million water level measurements from 1.5 million wells over the past century, the research is unprecedented in scale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This study was driven by curiosity. We wanted to better understand the state of global groundwater by wrangling millions of groundwater level measurements,” explained study lead author Professor Debra Perrone.</p>



<p>The process of data collection and analysis took three years, two of which were solely dedicated to cleaning and sorting the data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-new-insights-nbsp">Critical new insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The results revealed that groundwater levels are dropping in 71% of the studied aquifers, with this decline accelerating at an alarming rate. Groundwater depletion rates significantly sped up from 2000 to the present, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions under cultivation.</p>



<p>According to the researchers, the accelerating declines are occurring in nearly three times as many places as they would expect by chance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-groundwater-management-nbsp">Groundwater management&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite these grim revelations, the study also highlights examples of successful groundwater management. Notably, in 16% of the aquifer systems with historical data, declines observed in the 1980s and '90s have reversed.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Study co-lead author Scott Jasechko pointed out that human intervention can help. “This study shows that humans can turn things around with deliberate, concentrated efforts."</p>



<p>An example of such success is Tucson, Arizona, where water from the Colorado River is used to replenish the nearby Avra Valley aquifer.</p>



<p>“Groundwater is often viewed as a bank account for water,” explained Jasechko. “Intentionally refilling aquifers allows us to store that water until a time of need.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Filling aquifers is a cost-effective and ecologically beneficial approach compared to above-ground water storage. However, such interventions aren't without their trade-offs, as evidenced by the dwindling Colorado River.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-demand-nbsp">Reducing demand&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study suggests that reducing demand is as crucial as augmenting supply. Often this involves regulations, permitting and fees for groundwater use, noted Perrone, who is currently examining water law in the western U.S. to understand these diverse interventions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Regardless of whether it comes from supply or demand, aquifer recovery seems to require intervention, the researchers found.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complementary-resources-nbsp">Complementary resources&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team also leveraged data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, which provides insights into groundwater conditions at a larger scale. This data offers a more comprehensive understanding of groundwater dynamics.</p>



<p>“The beauty of GRACE is that it allows us to explore groundwater conditions where we don’t have in-situ data,” said Perrone. “Our assessment complements GRACE. Where we do have in-situ data, we can explore groundwater conditions locally, a crucial level of resolution when you’re managing depletion.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>In a previous paper published in 2021, the authors highlighted how withdrawing groundwater can affect nearby streams and surface water. Additionally, they are now exploring how groundwater levels vary over time in the context of climate change, aiming to predict where groundwater access is most at risk.</p>

<p>Norway has been recognized as Europe's most environmentally friendly country, according to a recent study by <a href="https://www.hemsol.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hemsol</a>, a solar energy company. </p>



<p>The experts considered various factors to rank Europe's greenest countries, such as renewable energy share, recycling rates, and carbon dioxide emissions.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-norway">Norway</h2>



<p>Norway's top ranking as Europe’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/going-green-which-states-are-the-least-environmentally-friendly/">greenest</a> country is attributed to its impressive renewable energy share in 2022, despite high per capita carbon dioxide emissions and extensive farmland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-austria">Austria</h2>



<p>Austria secured the second spot, primarily due to its citizens' preference for public transport, significantly reducing car usage. Austria also stands out for its high recycling rate and commitment to the Paris Agreement, though it ranks sixth in carbon dioxide emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finland">Finland</h2>



<p>Finland ranks third, following the implementation of a new Climate Act on July 1, 2022. The Act sets ambitious emission reduction targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050, with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iceland">Iceland</h2>



<p>Iceland, in fourth place, boasts one of the lowest carbon dioxide emissions rates among the top ten European countries and the highest rate of renewable energy share.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Iceland aims for carbon neutrality before 2040 and a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, as outlined in its updated Climate Action Plan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sweden">Sweden</h2>



<p>Completing the top five greenest countries in Europe is Sweden, notable for its extensive woodland areas and the second-highest renewable energy usage. Sweden's goal is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, with a minimum reduction of 85% from 1990 levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-northern-europe">Northern Europe</h2>



<p>“It’s interesting to see how six of the countries in the top 10 are Northern European and how all Scandinavian countries figure in the top five. This is a testament to their commitment to the environmental cause more than anyone else in Europe, and this can be seen both in the data and in the practical regulations that they have put in place both at home and that they have pledged to help with internationally,” concluded William Bergmark, founder of Hemsol.</p>

<p>In the serene waters off Maui during the winter months, the melodic singing of humpback whales fills the marine soundscape. </p>



<p>Despite extensive research spanning decades, many aspects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-20-minute-conversation-with-a-humpback-whale-named-twain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humpback whale behavior</a> and their complex singing remain enigmatic. </p>



<p>Recent research, however, has begun to unravel some of these mysteries, offering new insights into the daily patterns of these majestic creatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-humpback-whale-songs">Decoding humpback whale songs</h2>



<p>The study, spearheaded by the <a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hawaiʻi</a> in collaboration with NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands <a href="https://hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary</a>, observed an intriguing daily movement pattern among the whales. </p>



<p>These gentle giants tend to drift away from the shore during the day, only to return as evening approaches. </p>



<p>This pattern of migration is not just a random movement but appears to be a strategic choice by the whales.</p>



<p>Anke Kügler, the study's lead author and a doctoral student in the Marine Biology Graduate Program at <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UH Mānoa</a> at the time of the research, shared her insights. </p>



<p>“Singers may be attempting to reduce the chances of their song being drowned out among the cacophony nearshore when whale numbers are high,” Kügler explained. </p>



<p>She further noted that the whales’ movement towards the shore around sunset might be to avoid the offshore evening chorus of other marine animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-how-and-when-humpback-whales-sing">Learning how and when humpback whales sing</h2>



<p>The methodology behind this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whales-sing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humpback whale</a> research was as innovative as its findings. </p>



<p>By employing a combination of underwater listening devices and visual surveys, the team successfully tracked both the movements and the acoustic patterns of the whales in their high-density breeding grounds. </p>



<p>This dual approach allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the whales' behavior.</p>



<p>Marc Lammers, co-author of the study and a research ecologist with NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, highlighted the significance of this movement. </p>



<p>“This dynamic onshore-offshore movement of singers may be aimed at increasing the efficiency of the whales’ acoustic display, ensuring that other whales hear their songs,” he said.</p>

<p>The study not only tracked these movements but also explored the reasons behind them. Kügler elaborated on the unique approach taken by the team. </p>



<p>“This is the first effort of its kind, to our knowledge, in which we used specialized acoustic sensors to localize individual singers relatively close to shore to understand daily variations in their distance from shore, their spacing, and their movement behavior,” she said. </p>



<p>This strategy helped the team to contextualize visual results and address some limitations inherent in land-based observations.</p>



<p>The song of the humpback whale, believed to be crucial for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whales-travel-thousands-of-miles-to-mate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breeding</a>, takes on new significance in light of these findings. </p>



<p>The study highlights the challenges <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whale-reproduction-is-linked-to-krill-abundance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">male singers</a> face in an environment bustling with acoustic activity. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-noise-pollution-vs-natural-noise">Noise pollution vs. natural noise</h2>



<p>The team identified key drivers for the whales’ daily migrations -- crowded nearshore environments during the day and noisy offshore areas in the evening due to the chorus of other marine animals.</p>



<p>Kügler also shed light on a broader ecological issue -- <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whales-fail-to-respond-to-vessel-noise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">noise pollution</a>. “Discussions of noise pollution related to marine mammals have been dominated by concerns over anthropogenic noise,” she stated. </p>



<p>The study brings to attention the potential acoustic masking from natural sources, like one whale's song masking another's, a factor often overlooked in previous research. </p>



<p>Understanding these natural drivers adds depth to our knowledge of how animals reliant on acoustic signals adapt to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/whales-quiet-shipping-noise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">loud environments</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humpback-whales-and-hawaiian-culture">Humpback whales and Hawaiian culture</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whales-perform-full-body-scrubs-on-their-return-south/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humpback whales</a> of Hawai‘i are ecologically and economically significant, while holding a special place in the cultural heritage of the region. </p>



<p>Their singing is recognized and cherished worldwide. Lammers emphasized the shared responsibility in protecting these magnificent creatures. </p>



<p>“It is our collective kuleana (responsibility) to be the koholā’s (humpback whales) stewards,” he remarked. </p>



<p>Lammers underscored the importance of such research in fulfilling the Sanctuary’s management plan, aimed at maintaining a healthy and sustainable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/whales-changed-their-mating-tactic-from-singing-to-fighting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whale population</a>.</p>

<p>At Mesa Verde National Park in southern Colorado, a remarkable scene unfolds on a cliffside: a fuzzy bumblebee, <em>Anthophora pueblo</em>, diligently carves into the red sandstone, its powerful jaws creating a symphony of grinding sounds. </p>



<p>This industrious insect, native to Colorado and a recent discovery, captivates Adrian Carper, an entomologist at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Boulder</a> and the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/cumuseum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CU Museum of Natural History</a>. </p>



<p>"This is just one example of how crazily diverse our native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-evolution-occurred-tens-of-millions-of-years-earlier-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bees</a> are," Carper marvels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colorado-s-bumblebee-pollinators-in-peril">Colorado's bumblebee pollinators in peril</h2>



<p>Yet, Carper's latest comprehensive report on Colorado's native pollinators, co-authored with his team, paints a concerning picture. </p>



<p>Their research reveals a stark decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-heat-threatens-solitary-bees-and-global-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinator populations</a> over the past 35 years, with some species plummeting by more than half. </p>



<p>Alarmingly, about 20% of Colorado's 24 native bumblebee species are on the brink of seeking federal protection under the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/laws-regulations/summary-endangered-species-act" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Endangered Species Act</a>. </p>



<p>"That’s a huge alarm call, and that’s only for species we have good data for," Carper warns, suggesting the actual situation could be more dire.</p>



<p>The report, drawing on data from the <a href="https://www.rmbl.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory</a>, indicates a 61% decline in insect populations in high-elevation meadows, despite these areas being well-protected. </p>



<p>This decline encompasses a range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, beetles, flies, and even mosquitoes, many of which are under-researched.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bumblebees-agriculture-and-tourism">Bumblebees, agriculture and tourism</h2>



<p>Colorado's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bees-synthesize-nutrients-to-nourish-their-gut-microbiota/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bees</a> and other native pollinators are not just a vital component of the ecosystem; they are integral to the state's agriculture and tourism. </p>



<p>Carper highlights the unique relationship between these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-communication-is-hindered-by-human-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> and local flora. </p>



<p>For instance, the renowned Rocky Ford cantaloupes, native to southeastern Colorado, rely heavily on native squash bumblebees for pollination. </p>



<p>These bees possess specialized hairs to handle the cantaloupe's large pollen grains, a feature honeybees lack, making them inefficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-choose-immediate-rewards-over-energy-efficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> for these flowers. </p>



<p>"Our native bees have co-evolved with our native plants. We recreate in our beautiful high alpine mountains, because they are covered in colorful wildflowers, which wouldn’t be there if they didn't have our native pollinators to help them reproduce," Carper explained.</p>



<p>"Additionally, those native plants are integral to our rangelands, supporting over $5 billion worth of livestock across the state," said Carper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-to-native-pollinators">Threats to native pollinators</h2>



<p>The report identifies several threats to native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-rusty-patched-bumblebee-a-very-important-pollinator-is-on-the-edge-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a>: habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and the introduction of non-native species like honeybees. </p>



<p>The latter, despite their importance in agriculture, are not native to Colorado and have seen a surge in urban hive numbers. </p>



<p>This increase raises concerns about competition for food with native species and the potential spread of diseases and parasites. </p>



<p>"We need to better educate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-is-causing-honey-bee-colony-collapse-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beekeepers</a> on subjects like disease management and swarm control to mitigate honeybees’ impacts on native pollinators," advises Carper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-colorado-s-bumblebees">Protecting Colorado's bumblebees</h2>



<p>To combat these threats, the report suggests strategies such as creating and connecting habitat patches and reducing pesticide use. </p>



<p>Carper also emphasizes the role individuals can play, advocating for the use of native plants in personal landscaping to support local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-have-an-incredible-sense-of-smell-to-find-their-way-home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a>.</p>



<p>In summary, while the Anthophora pueblo bumblebee showcases the unique biodiversity of Colorado's pollinators, the stark reality of their declining numbers calls for immediate action. </p>



<p>Through a combination of research, education, and conservation efforts, there is hope for preserving these vital members of Colorado's ecosystem and economy.</p>

<p>The team's research marks a pivotal step in understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-discovery-is-a-revolutionary-step-forward/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> materials. </p>

<p>“By looking at how constituent particles move around in that system, we can tease out these properties that are really tricky to find otherwise.”</p>

<p>The innovative experiment was spearheaded by Sheikh Rubaiat Ul Haque, a recent UC San Diego graduate and now a postdoctoral scholar at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>. </p>



<p>Collaborating with Yuan Zhang, another graduate student from Averitt’s lab, Haque refined a technique known as terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. </p>



<p>This enhancement enabled the team to explore a material's properties across a wider frequency range, pushing the boundaries of their research.</p>



<p>Underpinning their experimental work is a theory by Professor Eugene Demler of <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zürich</a>, another author of the paper. </p>

<p>This hypothesis provided a crucial framework for Haque and his colleagues to investigate TNS's optical properties more closely.</p>

<p>A core concept in their research is the formation of excitons -- bound states of an electron and a hole created when an electron is elevated to a higher energy level by a photon. </p>



<p>These excitons can condense, behaving as a single entity. Utilizing Demler's theory, along with density functional calculations from Angel Rubio's group at the <a href="https://www.mpsd.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter, the team observed anomalous terahertz light amplification. </p>



<p>This observation was pivotal in uncovering some of the elusive properties of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/lasers_hidden-properties_TNS-exciton-condensate_Stanford_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TNS exciton condensate</a>.</p>



<p>The implications of this discovery are far-reaching. Condensates represent a well-defined <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-mechanics-uncovers-hidden-patterns-in-the-stock-market/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> state, and this spectroscopic technique could enable the imprinting of their quantum properties onto light.</p>

<p>The findings suggest that being more forgiving and kind to oneself, particularly in the face of shortcomings within a romantic relationship, can lead to happier, more fulfilling partnerships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-insights-nbsp">Valuable insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, which involved 209 couples, provides valuable insights into the dynamics of romantic relationships. A striking result of the research indicates that men, in particular, experience higher levels of relationship satisfaction when their female partners practice self-compassion.</p>



<p>"Self-compassion is the act of having a caring, kind and attentive attitude towards oneself - especially with regard to your own shortcomings," explained study lead author Dr. Robert Körner from the University of Bamberg.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We found that one’s ability to react compassionately to one’s own inadequacies, suffering and pain in the relationship benefits both members of the couple. In this way, an actor’s self-compassion not only improves their own happiness, but also their partner’s."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-personal-well-being-nbsp">Beyond personal well-being&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The implications of self-compassion extend beyond personal well-being, influencing various aspects of romantic relationships, such as conflict resolution, dealing with jealousy, and overall relationship satisfaction.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Prior studies have mainly focused on individual perspectives within relationships. However, this research stands out by considering both partners.</p>



<p>Dr. Nancy Tandler from the Institute of Psychology at MLU emphasized the importance of interviewing both individuals in a relationship. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of how self-compassion affects each partner and the relationship as a whole.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-relationship-dynamics-nbsp">Relationship dynamics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers conducted a survey that covered a wide range of relationship aspects, including sexual satisfaction and the perceived long-term potential of the relationship.</p>



<p>The team also looked at the connection at a relationship-specific level by analyzing not only individual self-compassion, but also self-compassion within the relationship.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This approach takes into account the fact that people behave differently in different areas of life," explained Professor Astrid Schütz from the University of Bamberg. For example, a person’s self-compassion after a romantic conflict may differ from their self-compassion following a work-related conflict.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"This study is the first to thoroughly test reciprocal effects of self-compassion in couples. We found that a person's self-compassion is related to the partner's relationship satisfaction, but this effect pertains only to self-compassion in the context of the relationship, not to self-compassion in general," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Apparently, when people are accepting of their own shortcomings and failures in a relationship, it benefits not only themselves but also the relationship and their partner's relationship satisfaction. The findings are relevant for couples therapy."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fostering-self-compassion-nbsp">Fostering self-compassion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dr. Tandler suggests a practical approach for fostering self-compassion by considering how one would treat a partner in a challenging situation and then applying that same level of care and understanding to oneself.</p>



<p>"In addition to the substantive findings, we conclude that it is important to consider the interrelationship between the relationship partners in order to understand the full potential of self-compassion as a resource for happy relationships," noted Dr. Tandler.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paleontologists have unveiled a new species of bird-like oviraptor dinosaur that roamed North America shortly before the catastrophic mass extinction event approximately 66 million years ago. </p>



<p>This event, believed to have been caused by a colossal asteroid impact, marked the end of the Cretaceous period and led to the extinction of most life forms, including all non-avian dinosaurs.</p>



<p>The newly identified species, an Oviraptor, likely <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-eggs-color-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">boasted feathers</a> and a beak and is believed to have lived around 125 million years ago. </p>



<p>Its existence came to light through the discovery of a leg bone within the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_Creek_Formation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hell Creek formation</a> -- a region extensively studied for its rich deposits of Upper Cretaceous and some lower Paleocene rocks, spanning across four states in North America.</p>



<p>This significant finding was made possible by a team of researchers from Canada and the United States, who studied a limb of the dinosaur found in the northern United States. </p>

It is depicted as having lived up to 130 million years ago.</p>



<p>Kyle Atkins-Weltman, a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.okstate.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oklahoma State University</a> and author of the study, provided insights into their findings. </p>



<p>"We describe a relatively small caenagnathid hindlimb from the Hell Creek Formation, and conducted osteohistological analysis to assess its maturity," he explained. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rigorous-study-of-an-ancient-dinosaur">Rigorous study of an ancient dinosaur</h2>



<p>The team's meticulous examination of histological data and the morphological distinctions from <em>Anzu wyliei</em> and other caenagnathids led them to the conclusion that this specimen is a novel species of caenagnathid from Hell Creek.</p>



<p>Oviraptorosaurs, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mud-dragon-dinosaur-fossil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diverse clade</a>, varied significantly in size -- ranging from the size of chickens or turkeys to species weighing over a ton. </p>



<p>Their cranial morphology suggests a diet that included both omnivorous and herbivorous members. While the earliest members of this group retained teeth, these were completely lost in the Late Cretaceous forms. </p>



<p>These dinosaurs possessed a complex, feathery integument, and studies of other specimens reveal their social nature, active brooding over nests, a reproductive strategy intermediate between crocodilians and modern birds, and an avian-like brain organization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-eoneophron-infernalis">Significance of <em>Eoneophron infernalis</em></h2>



<p>The discovery of this new species, named <em>Eoneophron infernalis</em>, has significantly broadened our understanding of the types of dinosaurs that inhabited this region between 125 and 129 million years ago. </p>



<p>"In tandem with histological data indicating that this animal was of subadult or adult status at the time of its death, our research suggests that it represents a new taxon, Eoneophron infernalis," said Mr. Atkins-Weltman.</p>



<p>This smaller caenagnathid from the Hell Creek Formation adds to the diversity and ecological understanding of caenagnathids in the end-Maastrichtian period. </p>



<p>In addition, the finding indicates that caenagnathid diversity in Laurasia remained largely stable through the Campanian-Maastrichtian. </p>



<p>These dinosaurs were successful components of Laurasian ecosystems until their extinction.</p>

<p>In the same way that cream blends into coffee, transforming it from a whirl of white to a uniform brown, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-discovery-is-a-revolutionary-step-forward/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> computer chips face a challenge. </p>



<p>These devices operate on the minuscule scale of the universe's fundamental particles, where data can quickly become chaotic, limiting memory efficiency. </p>



<p>However, new research spearheaded by Rahul Nandkishore, an associate professor of physics at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Boulder</a>, suggests a groundbreaking approach that could revolutionize data retention in quantum computing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coffee-creamer-and-the-quantum-world">Coffee, creamer and the quantum world</h2>



<p>Nandkishore and his team, through mathematical modeling, propose a scenario akin to cream and coffee that never mix, regardless of how much they are stirred. </p>

<p>Nandkishore, the senior author of the study, illustrates his idea using the familiar sight of cream swirling in coffee, imagining these patterns remaining dynamic indefinitely. </p>



<p>“Think of the initial swirling patterns that appear when you add cream to your morning coffee,” said Nandkishore. “Imagine if these patterns continued to swirl and dance no matter how long you watched.”</p>



<p>This concept is central to the study, which involved David Stephen and Oliver Hart, postdoctoral researchers in physics at CU Boulder.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-computing-the-challenge">Quantum computing: The challenge</h2>

<p>Nandkishore and his team's solution lies in arranging qubits in specific patterns that maintain their information even under disturbances, like magnetic fields. </p>



<p>“This could be a way of storing information,” he said. “You would write information into these patterns, and the information couldn’t be degraded.”</p>



<p>This arrangement could allow for the creation of devices with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/full-chemical-complexity-of-quantum-decoherence-finally-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> memory, where data, once written into these patterns, remains uncorrupted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mathematical-model-used-in-the-study">Mathematical model used in the study</h2>



<p>The researchers employed mathematical models to envision an array of hundreds to thousands of qubits in a checkerboard pattern. </p>



<p>They discovered that tightly packing qubits influences their neighboring qubits' behavior, akin to a crowded phone booth where movement is severely limited. </p>



<p>This specific arrangement might enable the patterns to flow around a quantum chip without degrading, much like the enduring swirls of cream in a cup of coffee.</p>



<p>Nandkishore notes that this study's implications extend beyond <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computing-and-machine-learning-enhance-airplane-performance-and-safety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> computing. </p>



<p>“The wonderful thing about this study is that we discovered that we could understand this fundamental phenomenon through what is almost simple geometry,” Nandkishore said. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-real-world-applications-from-quantum-coffee">Real world applications from 'quantum coffee'</h2>



<p>It challenges the common understanding that everything in the universe, from coffee to oceans, moves toward thermal equilibrium, where differences in temperature eventually even out, like ice melting in a warm drink. </p>



<p>His findings suggest that certain matter organizations might resist this equilibrium, potentially defying some long-standing physical laws.</p>



<p>While further experimentation is necessary to validate these theoretical swirls, the study represents a significant stride in the quest to create materials that stay out of equilibrium for extended periods. </p>



<p>This pursuit, known as "ergodicity breaking," could redefine our understanding of statistical physics and its application to everyday phenomena. </p>



<p>As Nandkishore puts it, while we won't need to rewrite the math for ice and water, there are scenarios where traditional statistical physics might not apply, opening new frontiers in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-ping-pong-game-played-by-two-atoms-controlling-photons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> computing and beyond.</p>

<p>Huettmann’s research underscores the changing dynamics of wildlife due to human influence and highlights the need for improved wildlife conservation efforts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This kind of information is providing a more holistic picture of how human influence on the environment is changing what we otherwise know as natural. Using machine learning will help us, hopefully, to advocate for improved wildlife conservation,” he concluded.</p>

<p>The Earth is currently experiencing a series of solar storms, raising concerns about potential technological disruptions and offering the chance to witness stunning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storms-will-intensify-then-slow-as-the-solar-cycle-peaks-in-early-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auroras</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over the weekend, the Sun emitted two solar flares which have since made contact with Earth, beginning with an impact over the Pacific Ocean on Monday afternoon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-radio-blackouts">Radio blackouts</h2>



<p>A brief radio blackout was detected over the Pacific Ocean following the solar storm's arrival on Earth around 4:20 p.m. EST. </p>



<p>This incident occurred off the western U.S. and South American coasts and was short-lived, lasting only a few seconds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the impact was more prolonged at the poles, where the outage spanned approximately seven hours.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-grid-impact">Potential grid impact</h2>



<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Weather Prediction Center</a> has indicated a 60 percent chance that the ongoing storm could disrupt the power grid.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another storm that is expected to arrive tomorrow could further affect radios, aviation communication, and degrade satellite operations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-m-class-flares">M-class flares</h2>



<p>Physicist Tamitha Skov, speaking to DailyMail, highlighted the increasing risk of radio blackouts.</p>



<p>"As for radio blackouts, yes the risk is increasing now," said Skov. "We have already had two small M-class flares, resulting in short-lived R1-level radio blackouts today, but they may soon become longer and larger."</p>



<p>Skov explained that these M-class <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aurora-borealis-seen-as-far-south-as-the-equator-after-largest-known-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flares</a> generally cause brief radio blackouts affecting Earth's polar regions. </p>



<p>Sunspots 3559 and 3555 have been identified as the sources of these flares, releasing coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that contain plasma and magnetic fields.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-series-of-storms">A series of storms</h2>



<p>"This storm will be followed by two, possibly three others that will give us several glancing blows through January 25," said Skov, who hosts a space weather forecast on YouTube. </p>



<p>"We have a series of solar storms hitting starting now (the first one just hit a few hours ago, but it is ramping up slowly)."</p>



<p>"However, we can all rest easy, as these storms will not be that powerful to affect critical infrastructure."</p>



<p>NOAA uses a five-level S-scale to indicate the severity of solar radiation storms, with the current storm being a moderate G2 event on the SWPC scale.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-solar-storms">Understanding solar storms</h2>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, solar storms occur when the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetosphere, causing potential disturbances.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Shawn Dahl, coordinator for NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, told ABC News that the current solar storm resulted from an eruption from a filament, which is a magnetic field suspended above the sun's surface that contains billions of tons of solar material.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When that magnetic field becomes unstable, it can sometimes eject material into space, dragging a very strong, localized magnetic field with it, explained Dahl. </p>



<p>He noted that these filament eruptions are what caused the solar storms observed on Saturday, Sunday, and again on Monday morning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-technology">Impact on technology</h2>



<p>Intense geomagnetic storms can disrupt navigation systems by interfering with radio and GPS signals and can affect electrical power networks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dahl told ABC News that the ongoing solar storm should not bring major impacts to everyday life, noting that the power grid is equipped to handle minor disruptions and that satellites can be managed to maintain their proper orbital height.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-beauty-of-solar-storms">The beauty of solar storms</h2>



<p>One of the more visible effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storms-will-intensify-then-slow-as-the-solar-cycle-peaks-in-early-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coronal mass ejections</a> is the aurora borealis, or northern lights, created by the interaction of solar particles with Earth's atmosphere. </p>



<p>The intensity of the solar storm determines how far south these lights can be seen.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This week's solar storms are expected to create stunning auroras visible as far south as Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Auroras this time of year are typically the most visible from several hours after sunset to around the midnight hour, said Dahl. He added that viewers will need take the full moon into account, as well as move away from city lights.</p>

<p>As discussed above, the sun is a hub of intense and dynamic activity. Among its many phenomena, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-massive-solar-flare-struck-earth-on-monday-but-what-does-this-mean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar flares</a> stand out, especially the M-class category. </p>



<p>These medium-sized eruptions on the sun's surface, which are the cause of the current space weather alert that Earth is under, have profound implications for our planet and its technological infrastructure.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-m-class-solar-flares">Understanding M-class solar flares</h3>



<p>Solar flares are sudden, intense eruptions of electromagnetic radiation from the sun's atmosphere. They are classified into categories – A, B, C, M, and X – based on their brightness in the x-ray wavelengths. </p>



<p>M-class flares, ranking second in intensity, are ten times stronger than C-class but considerably weaker than the most potent X-class flares.</p>

<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>

<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
