<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Recent research has unveiled surprising details about the Megalodon, a colossal shark species that became extinct approximately 3.6 million years ago. Contrary to earlier beliefs, this study reveals that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodon-was-a-truly-vicious-killer-but-not-a-cold-blooded-one/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> was much thinner than previously thought. </p>



<p>This new understanding significantly alters our perception of Megalodon behavior, its role in ancient ocean ecosystems, and the factors contributing to its extinction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-megalodon-in-popular-culture">Megalodon in popular culture</h2>



<p>In popular culture, notably in sci-fi films like “The Meg” (2018) and “Meg 2: The Trench” (2023), the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodon-shark-was-a-very-slow-swimmer-with-an-enormous-appetite/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> is often depicted as a gargantuan and bulky creature. </p>



<p>Previous scientific studies, largely based on its teeth and vertebrae fossils, supported this portrayal, estimating the shark's length to range from 50 feet to a staggering 65 feet. </p>



<p>However, this new study challenges these assumptions and reshapes our understanding of this ancient predator.</p>



<p>“Our team reexamined the fossil record, and discovered the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodon-devoured-huge-prey-up-to-eight-meters-long/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> was more slender and possibly even longer than we thought. Therefore, a better model might be the modern mako shark,” said <a href="https://www.ucr.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCR</a> biologist and paper first author <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Megalodon-shark_tooth_Douglas-Long_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phillip Sternes</a>.</p>



<p>“It still would have been a formidable predator at the top of the ancient marine food chain, but it would have behaved differently based on this new understanding of its body.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-thinner-megalodon-surmised">A thinner Megalodon surmised</h2>



<p>This revelation suggests that while still a formidable apex predator, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-white-sharks-may-have-sped-up-megalodon-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a>'s hunting and feeding behavior might have been different than previously imagined.</p>



<p>The research involved an international team of 26 scientists, co-led by Sternes and Kenshu Shimada, a paleobiology professor at <a href="https://www.depaul.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DePaul University</a>. </p>



<p>The team's 'eureka moment' occurred when they noticed discrepancies in the estimated body lengths for the same <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-white-sharks-may-have-sped-up-megalodon-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> specimen. This inconsistency prompted a deeper investigation.</p>



<p>“We measured the whole vertebral skeleton of a living great white shark with a CT scanner and compared that to the previous reconstruction of the Megalodon vertebral column,” Sternes elaborated. </p>



<p>The findings indicated that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodons-appearance-still-remains-a-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> was not just a larger version of the modern great white shark.</p>



<p>This revised understanding of the Megalodon's body type has far-reaching implications. </p>



<p>“The remarkably simple evidence that <em>O. megalodon</em> had a more slender body than the great white shark was hidden in plain sight,” said Kenshu Shimada, a co-leader and the senior author of the new study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-and-ecological-implications">Evolutionary and ecological implications</h2>



<p>This stunning discovery alters our view of not only the giant shark itself, but also its impact on the evolution and ecology of marine ecosystems that have shaped today's oceans. </p>



<p>A thinner, more <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Megalodon-shark_body-form_graphic_credit-Depaul-University_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elongated Megalodon body</a> suggests a longer digestive canal, implying enhanced nutrient absorption and potentially less frequent feeding needs.</p>



<p>Sternes added, “With increased ability to digest its food, it could have gone for longer without needing to hunt. This means less predation pressure on other marine creatures.” </p>



<p>This insight offers a new perspective on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-caused-a-giant-megalodon-tooth-to-split/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a>'s ecological role and its interactions with other marine life.</p>



<p>While some scientists believe a natural decrease in prey led to the Megalodon's extinction, Sternes proposes a different theory, influenced by the new understanding of its shape. </p>



<p>“I believe there were a combination of factors that led to the extinction, but one of them may have been the emergence of the great white shark, which was possibly more agile, making it an even better predator than the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodons-grew-larger-in-cold-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a>,” he suggested. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifestyle-and-extinction-of-a-thinner-megalodon">Lifestyle and extinction of a thinner Megalodon</h2>



<p>This competitive dynamic might have been a significant factor in the decline and ultimate extinction of a thinner <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megalodons-feasted-on-sperm-whales-enormous-noses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a>.</p>



<p>The international team of researchers from countries including the U.S., UK, Austria, France, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and Australia agree that this new understanding of the Megalodon necessitates a reevaluation of ancient marine life. </p>



<p>“Now that we know it was a thinner shark, we need to reinvestigate its lifestyle, how it really lived, and what caused it to die,” Sternes concluded. </p>



<p>“Despite the major scientific advancement in our new study, the fact that we still don’t know exactly how <em>O. megalodon</em> looked keeps our imagination going,” Shimada said. </p>



<p>“The continued mystery like this makes paleontology, the study of prehistoric life, a fascinating and exciting scientific field.”</p>



<p>In summary, this study challenges existing beliefs about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-megatooth-sharks-were-apex-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megalodon</a> sharks and proves the need for more research in the future. </p>

<p>Contrary to the long-held Clausius-Clapeyron relationship, which suggests that a warmer atmosphere should contain more water vapor, a new study finds that atmospheric moisture has not increased as expected, particularly over dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deserts-as-carbon-sinks-study-reveals-potential-for-greening-arid-regions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a>.</p>



<p>This revelation raises new questions about the future of these regions in the face of climate change.</p>



<p>Recent research spearheaded by the U.S. National Science Foundation's National Center for Atmospheric Research (<a href="https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/national-center-atmospheric-research-ncar" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF NCAR</a>) has revealed a puzzling anomaly in our understanding of climate science. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-regions-are-getting-dryer-instead-of-wetter">Dry regions are getting dryer instead of wetter</h2>



<p>The study's results are alarming, as they suggest that dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-is-frozen-ground-responding-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> could be more vulnerable to wildfires and extreme heat than previously projected.</p>



<p>“The impacts could be potentially severe,” said NSF NCAR scientist Isla Simpson, lead author of the study. “This is a global problem, and it’s something that is completely unexpected given our climate model results.”</p>



<p>The study, a collaborative effort involving scientists from various esteemed institutions, including <a href="https://www.ucla.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a>, <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCSB</a>, <a href="https://www.cornell.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>, <a href="https://polarbearsinternational.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polar Bears International</a>, and <a href="https://www.columbia.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a>, delved into decades of atmospheric data. </p>



<p>From 1980 to 2020, the team analyzed data from weather stations, weather balloons, and satellites, expecting to find an increase in atmospheric water vapor in line with climate models. However, the results were contrary to expectations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clausius-clapeyron-relationship-challenged">Clausius-Clapeyron relationship challenged</h2>



<p>The Clausius-Clapeyron relationship has been a fundamental principle in climate science, suggesting that with every 1°C rise in temperature, atmospheric moisture should increase by about 7%. </p>



<p>Surprisingly, the research found that over dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restoration-of-drylands-essential-for-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a>, moisture levels have remained constant or even declined, as observed in the Southwestern United States.</p>



<p>“This is contrary to all climate model simulations in which it rises at a rate close to theoretical expectations, even over dry regions,” the authors wrote in the new paper. </p>



<p>“Given close links between water vapor and wildfire, ecosystem functioning, and temperature extremes, this issue must be resolved in order to provide credible climate projections for dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drier-savannas-store-more-soil-carbon-than-previously-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> of the world.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-regions-will-face-greater-challenges">Dry regions will face greater challenges</h2>



<p>This discrepancy poses a significant challenge to climate models, which have consistently projected rising atmospheric moisture even over dry regions. </p>



<p>Simpson, who first noticed this trend while working on a <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> report about climate change in the southwestern U.S., emphasizes the urgency of resolving this issue to provide credible climate projections.</p>



<p>“We could be facing even higher risks than what’s been projected for dry and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-the-driving-forces-behind-greening-in-the-sahara-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semi-arid regions</a> like the Southwest, which has already been affected by unprecedented water shortages and extreme wildfire seasons,” Simpson said.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the study found that humid regions exhibit a different pattern. Here, water vapor increased during wetter months as expected, but the increase was not as pronounced during the driest months. </p>



<p>This pattern contrasts sharply with the arid and semi-arid regions, further complicating the overall understanding of atmospheric moisture dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-possible-explanations">Exploring possible explanations</h2>



<p>The researchers propose several theories to explain these unexpected findings. One possibility is that the transfer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-is-the-main-source-of-rain-in-the-atacama-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moisture</a> from the Earth's surface to the atmosphere is not occurring as the models suggest. </p>



<p>Another theory is that atmospheric circulation patterns may be moving moisture in unexpected ways. Additionally, the land surface itself might be retaining more moisture than anticipated, affecting its availability to the atmosphere.</p>



<p>Despite considering errors in observational data, the team found the discrepancy too consistent across different regions and time frames to be attributed to measurement errors.</p>



<p>Simpson emphasized the urgent need for more research to determine the cause.</p>



<p>“It is a really tricky problem to solve, because we don't have global observations of all the processes that matter to tell us about how water is being transferred from the land surface to the atmosphere," she said.&nbsp; </p>



<p>"But we absolutely need to figure out what's going wrong because the situation is not what we expected and could have very serious implications for the future.”</p>



<p>In summary, this study opens a new chapter in climate science, challenging existing models and highlighting the complexity of Earth's climate system.</p>



<p>As the researchers continue to explore this surprising anomaly, their work reminds us of the ever-evolving nature of scientific understanding and the critical need for continuous observation and analysis in the face of global climate change.</p>

<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a> have identified new strains of bacterial pathogens in Pennsylvania that threaten the state's potato <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tackling-malnutrition-new-satellite-can-monitor-nutrients-in-crops-from-space/">crops</a>, which are crucial to its snack industry. </p>



<p>These pathogens are capable of causing devastating diseases like blackleg and soft rot, leading to potential crop losses.</p>



<p>Pennsylvania is known for its leading snack companies like Martin's Potato Chips, Utz, and Snyder's of Hanover. The state highly values its potato production.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers embarked on a study after observing symptoms of blackleg and soft rot in potato fields across Pennsylvania. These symptoms include wilting, stunting, black lesions, and rotting tubers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In their investigation, the team collected samples from 26 potato fields showing these distressing signs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-startling-results-nbsp">Startling results&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team isolated, cultured, and identified 456 samples of bacteria. This included six species of Pectobacterium and one strain of Dickeya, which were previously unreported in Pennsylvania.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Alarmingly, one of the Pectobacterium species had never been seen in the United States before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study co-author Professor Carolee Bull said the findings could inform methods for detecting and quantifying the potato pathogens causing blackleg and soft rot in Pennsylvania and beyond.</p>



<p>"In addition to surveillance, these insights could also help us better understand disease epidemiology," said Professor Bull. "For example, the pathogens may have different optimum temperatures for growing or for producing these symptoms in the potatoes. So, the severity of the disease may change depending on different climate conditions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recent-crop-losses">Recent crop losses</h2>



<p>The research comes in the wake of significant crop losses in other northeastern states like Maine and New York, attributed to similar pathogens.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These losses have reignited interest in monitoring not only known pathogens but also those not yet reported in the U.S. such as Dickeya solani. This particular pathogen is known for causing severe disease outbreaks in Europe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-the-pathogens-nbsp">Identifying the pathogens&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"The losses in the Maine potato industry, as well as the importance of the potato industry here in Pennsylvania and to the potato chip industry, necessitated that we determine what pathogens may be causing these outbreaks," said Professor Bull.</p>



<p>"We were worried that new pathogens had entered the U.S., including the very devastating Dickeya solani."</p>



<p>Professor Bull noted that growers will benefit from the analysis by knowing which organisms were found on which potato varieties.</p>

<p>The study's findings are crucial for Pennsylvania's potato industry and the broader U.S. agricultural sector. </p>



<p>The detection of pathogens like P. actinidiae, P. polonicum, P. polaris, P. punjabense, P. parmentieri, and P. versatile, and particularly the first-time reporting of P. actinidiae in the U.S., marks a significant milestone in plant pathology. </p>



<p>The identification of these bacteria is a vital step in developing effective management and control strategies, which are essential for protecting potato crop yields.</p>



<p>The researchers said they will continue their work by testing the effects of these pathogens on potatoes, developing surveillance tools for each of the pathogens, and evaluating the need for new management practices.</p>

Potato-threatening pathogens discovered that could harm potato chip production

<p>Women who eat more plant-based protein develop fewer chronic diseases and are generally healthier later in life, according to a study from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at <a href="https://www.tufts.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tufts University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research was focused on data from over 48,000 women. The data was obtained from the Harvard-based Nurses' Health Study, which tracked female healthcare professionals from 1984 to 2016. At the study's onset, the women were between the ages of 38 and 59 and were in good physical and mental health.</p>



<p>The researchers examined dietary surveys collected every four years. They analyzed the frequency of consumption of various foods to assess the impact of dietary protein on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-and-feeding-cycle-is-crucial-for-healthy-aging/">healthy aging</a>. The Harvard University Food Composition Database was used to calculate total protein intake from all food items.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings-nbsp">Key findings&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts found a striking correlation between higher plant-based protein intake and reduced incidence of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, as well as cognitive and mental health decline.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Women who consumed more plant protein were 46% more likely to maintain good health into their later years.</p>



<p>On the other hand, higher consumption of animal protein was associated with a 6% decrease in the likelihood of healthy aging.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While animal protein was modestly linked to fewer physical limitations in older age, plant protein showed a stronger and more consistent correlation across all models, especially with mental health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-source-of-the-protein-matters">The source of the protein matters</h2>



<p>“Consuming protein in midlife was linked to promoting good health in older adulthood,” said study lead author Andres Ardisson Korat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We also found that the source of protein matters. Getting the majority of your protein from plant sources at midlife, plus a small amount of animal protein seems to be conducive to good health and good survival to older ages.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chronic-disease-nbsp">Chronic disease&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For heart disease, in particular, higher plant protein consumption was associated with lower levels of LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By contrast, increased animal protein intake was associated with higher levels of these markers and increased insulin-like growth factor, which is linked to various cancers.</p>



<p>“Those who consumed greater amounts of animal protein tended to have more chronic disease and didn’t manage to obtain the improved physical function that we normally associate with eating protein,” said Ardisson Korat.</p>



<p>Interestingly, dairy protein (from sources like milk, cheese, pizza, yogurt, and ice cream) showed no significant correlation with better health status in older adulthood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications">Broader implications</h2>



<p>The study suggests that the benefits of plant protein might extend beyond the protein itself. Plant-based foods typically have higher proportions of dietary fiber, micronutrients, and polyphenols, beneficial compounds not found in animal foods.</p>



<p>However, Ardisson Korat also emphasized the need for further research, particularly in more diverse groups. The Nurses' Health Study primarily surveyed white females in the healthcare sector.</p>



<p>“The data from the study tended to be very homogeneous in terms of demographic and socioeconomic composition, so it will be valuable to follow up with a study in cohorts that are more diverse. It’s a field that is still evolving,” said Ardisson Korat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recommendations">Recommendations</h2>



<p>The findings support the recommendation for women to consume most of their protein from fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. However, the inclusion of some fish and animal protein is advised for iron and vitamin B12 content.</p>



<p>“Dietary protein intake, especially plant protein, in midlife plays an important role in the promotion of healthy aging and in maintaining positive health status at older ages,” concluded Ardisson Korat.</p>

<p>Scientists have traced the journey of a 14,000-year-old woolly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-made-woolly-mammoths-unique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoth</a>, named Élmayųujey'eh, tying its movements directly to the oldest human settlements in Alaska. </p>



<p>This revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of some of the earliest people to traverse the Bering Land Bridge, and their interactions with these iconic creatures.</p>



<p>The study was led by Audrey Rowe, a PhD student at the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alaska Fairbanks</a> (UAF). The researchers used isotope analysis to delve into the life of Élmayųujey'eh -- affectionately known as <a href="https://media.uaf.edu/media/t/1_90y53m1b" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Elma</a>. </p>



<p>The discovery of her tusk at the Swan Point archaeological site in interior Alaska marked a significant milestone in understanding the coexistence of mammoths and early human settlers in the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woolly-mammoths-and-humans">Woolly mammoths and humans </h2>



<p>The researchers found that isotopic data from Elma's tusk, along with DNA from other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/woolly-mammoths-had-testosterone-driven-aggression-during-mating-season/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoths</a> and archaeological evidence from the site, suggested that early Alaskan settlers strategically positioned their settlements in areas frequented by mammoths. </p>



<p>“She wandered around the densest region of archaeological sites in Alaska,” said Rowe. “It looks like these early people were establishing hunting camps in areas that were frequented by mammoths.”</p>



<p>This indicates a symbiotic relationship between the mammoths and human hunter-gatherers, with humans likely relying on these mammoth-populated areas for sustenance.</p>



<p>Elma's journey, covering approximately 1,000 kilometers through Alaska and northwestern Canada, was not a solitary one. </p>



<p>The tusk and remains of two related juvenile mammoths were excavated in 2009 by Charles Holmes, a research professor at UAF, and François Lanoë, a research associate at the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/museum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alaska Museum of the North</a>. </p>



<p>Accompanying these remains were signs of human activity, including campfires, stone tools, and butchered game remains. </p>



<p>Ben Potter, an archaeologist and professor of anthropology at UAF, said these findings indicate a pattern consistent with human hunting of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/woolly-mammoths-extinct/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoths</a>.</p>



<p>“Climate change at the end of the ice age fragmented mammoths’ preferred open habitat, potentially decreasing movement and making them more vulnerable to human predation,” Potter said.</p>

The isotopes indicated that Elma was a healthy, 20-year-old female.</p>



<p>“She was a young adult in the prime of life. Her isotopes showed she was not malnourished and that she died in the same season as the seasonal hunting camp at Swan Point where her tusk was found,” said senior author Matthew Wooller, who is director of the <a href="https://ine.uaf.edu/werc/asif/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alaska Stable Isotope Facility</a> and a professor at UAF’s College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.</p>

<p>Ancient chewing gum has shed light on the diet and eating habits of people living on the west coast of Scandinavia during the Stone Age 10,000 years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A comprehensive study of DNA extracted from the gum reveals a varied diet that included deer, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-humans-stone-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trout</a>, and hazelnuts.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-huseby-klev">Huseby Klev</h2>



<p>The research was centered around Huseby Klev, an island north of modern-day Göteborg. </p>



<p>The scientists have discovered fascinating details from a time when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-humans-connected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humans</a> were transitioning from nomadic hunter-gatherers to settled agricultural societies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>About 9,700 years ago, this site was a bustling camp where people fished, hunted, and gathered food. </p>



<p>Among these activities, teenagers chewed resin to produce glue, a task complicated by their dietary habits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-stone-age-diet">Unraveling the stone age diet</h2>



<p>The chewed resin from Huseby Klev, discovered during an excavation 30 years ago, has been the focus of an international research team.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"There is a richness of DNA sequences in the chewed mastic from Huseby-Klev, and in it we find both the bacteria that we know are related to periodontitis, and DNA from plants and animals that they had chewed before," said Dr. Emrah Kırdök of <a href="https://www.mersin.edu.tr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mersin University</a>.</p>



<p>The research, initiated when Dr. Kırdök was a postdoc at <a href="https://www.su.se/cmlink/stockholm-university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm University</a>, has evolved significantly. The complexity of identifying different species from the DNA mix presented a challenge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dr. Andrés Aravena from Istanbul University spent extensive hours analyzing the data with Dr. Kırdök.</p>



<p>“We had to apply several computational heavy analytical tools to single out the different species and organisms. All the tools we needed were not ready to be applied to ancient DNA; but much of our time was spent on adjusting them so that we could apply them," said Dr. Aravena.</p>

<p>The team found that due to a bad case of periodontitis (severe gum infection that can lead to tooth loss and bone loss), one of the teenagers had problems eating the chewy deer-meat, as well as preparing the resin by chewing it.</p>



<p>“This provides a snapshot of the life of a small group of hunter-gatherers on the Scandinavian west coast," said Professor Götherström.</p>



<p>"I think it is amazing, there are other well established methods to work out what nutrition and diet relates to the Stone Age, but here we know that these teenagers were eating deer, trout, and hazelnuts 9,700 years ago on the west coast of Scandinavia, while at least one of them had severe problems with his teeth."</p>

<p>Alpine glaciers are set to lose at least a third of their volume by 2050, regardless of any immediate halt in global warming, according to scientists from the <a href="https://www.unil.ch/central/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Lausanne</a> and international collaborators. </p>



<p>This startling projection about the future of Alpine glaciers is the result of advanced computer modeling and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-identifies-new-anti-aging-compounds/">artificial intelligence</a>. </p>



<p>The team developed a computer model that uses machine-learning algorithms and climate data. The model predicts a minimum reduction of 34% in the ice volume of the European Alps by 2050. </p>



<p>This disturbing prediction holds true for Alpine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-arctic-glaciers-are-releasing-a-new-source-of-potent-methane-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glaciers</a> even under the most optimistic scenario where global warming ceases instantly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-discovery-about-alpine-glaciers">Alarming discovery about Alpine glaciers</h2>



<p>Modeling glaciers is highly challenging over the next few decades, because creating models correctly is a big issue due to the amount of variables and uncertainty involved.</p>



<p>"This is unfortunate, because we really want to know what is going to happen on that timescale, as it will directly affect our lives, homes and jobs," explain the authors. </p>



<p>"We present a new modeling approach, taking advantage of new data and machine-learning methods, that allows us to set our model up much more effectively."</p>



<p>The study focused on how much ice will be lost in the European Alps between now and 2050, even if the climate does not change further.</p>



<p>The team discovered that at least one-third of the ice will be lost, come what may. Even the largest glacier fronts will retreat by several kilometers.</p>



<p>The projections are based on the premise that the inertia in the climate-glacier system would continue to affect the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-pose-great-threat-to-biodiversity-in-mountain-ranges/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glaciers</a> despite a halt in warming. </p>



<p>A more dire scenario unfolds when considering the current trajectory of climate change. </p>



<p>Without significant intervention, almost half (46%) of the Alps' ice volume is projected to vanish by 2050, following the melting trend observed over the last two decades. </p>



<p>The situation appears even more alarming when looking at data from just the past ten years, which suggests a potential loss of up to 65% of the ice volume.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-short-term-impacts">New perspective on short-term impacts</h2>



<p>The study is distinct from traditional models in its focus on the near future, specifically the year 2050. By concentrating on this shorter timeframe, the research brings the consequences of climate change into a more immediate perspective.</p>



<p>These findings raise some very difficult questions about the world our children will inherit and the potential impacts on future events, such as the 2038 Winter Olympics in Switzerland.</p>

<p>Samuel Cook, a researcher at UNIL and the first author of the study, emphasized the urgency of the situation. </p>



<p>"The data used to build the scenarios stop in 2022, a year that was followed by an exceptionally hot summer. It is therefore likely that the situation will be even worse than the one we present," said Cook. </p>

<p>The study specifically investigates Skyrmion topology, a concept introduced by Tony Skyrme in the 1980s. In this scenario, topology refers to a global property that remains unchanged, like the texture of a fabric, irrespective of how it is manipulated.</p>

<p>Building on this, the team proposes using topology as a classification system for entangled states. Dr. Isaac Nape, a co-investigator, compares this to an alphabet for entangled states. </p>



<p>"Just as we differentiate spheres and doughnuts by their holes, our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/full-chemical-complexity-of-quantum-decoherence-finally-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> skyrmions can be categorized by their topological features," he explains.</p>

<p>Researchers from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SUNY Binghamton</a> and <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cardiff University</a> in Wales have unearthed fossils of early plant life at the site. </p>



<p>The forest, stretching from New York to Pennsylvania, featured trees as tall as 65 feet with trunks up to five feet in diameter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This discovery is pivotal in understanding the planet's climatic evolution, as the emergence of trees played a crucial role in altering Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide and laying the groundwork for the atmosphere that supports human life.</p>



<p>First uncovered in 2009, the archaeological site has been meticulously analyzed by the team to accurately date the trees and identify the species that once thrived there.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist from Cardiff University, described the experience, saying, "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees. Standing on the quarry surface we can reconstruct the living forest around us in our imagination."</p>

<p>The site, roughly half the size of a football field, contains rocks aged at 385 million years. <p>These roots, with their unique horizontal radial patterns, indicate where vertical tree trunks once stood.</p>



<p>Predominantly, the forest’s trunks were from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/decaying-tree-roots-may-have-caused-mass-extinctions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archaeopteris</a>, a tree species with large wooden roots and leafy branches. </p>



<p>The forest also housed cladoxylopsids, an extinct group of sphenopsids and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-sheds-light-on-the-evolution-of-ferns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ferns</a>, and a third yet-to-be-identified tree type. </p>



<p>Interestingly, all these trees reproduced through spores rather than seeds, a process where small cells multiply to create more plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geochemical-changes-in-the-world-s-oldest-forest">Geochemical changes in the world's oldest forest</h2>



<p>Kevin Boyce, a geoscientist at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, highlighted the significant impact these trees had on the ancient climate. </p>



<p>Their growth process involved "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-rock-weathering-is-a-co2-source-comparable-to-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weathering</a>," a chemical reaction that extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it to carbon ions in groundwater, which eventually flows to the sea and gets absorbed in limestone.</p>



<p>The researchers believe that a massive flood led to the forest's demise, a theory supported by the discovery of multiple fish fossils on the quarry's surface. </p>



<p>Berry noted the unexpected coexistence of plants previously thought to inhabit mutually exclusive environments.</p>



<p>He explained how they drilled into the fossil soil between the trees to investigate geochemical changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-the-forest-as-a-historical-site">Preserving the forest as a historical site</h2>



<p>In 2020, New York State Assemblyman Chris Tauge introduced a resolution to the Cairo Town Board to protect this significant area. </p>



<p>John Coyne, the supervisor of Cairo, expressed pride and excitement about this discovery, underscoring the collaboration between the county, state, and the town for its preservation.</p>



<p>Before this discovery, the oldest known forest was in Gilboa, New York, located about 25 miles from the Cairo site. </p>



<p>Discovered in the late 19th century, the Gilboa forest was home to Gilboa Trees, or Eospermatopteris, one of the earliest plant species on Earth. </p>



<p>These fern-like trees, reaching around 30 feet tall, lacked wood. A preserved tree stump from Gilboa, initially displayed in a museum in the mid-1900s, was later moved to the <a href="https://nysl.nysed.gov/locpar_ce.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cultural Education Center</a> in Albany, New York.</p>

<p>Through machine learning frameworks, the researchers identified sea otter population density as the strongest predictor of change in kelp coverage. </p>



<p>This finding underscores the otter's role as a keystone species, vital in maintaining the health and balance of kelp ecosystems. </p>

<p>"Today, extreme heat in the ocean is intense and persistent. Beginning a decade ago, this threat now affects more than half the ocean's surface," said study senior author Kyle Van Houtan, a research scientist at Duke University.</p>



<p>"This is a major problem for kelp forests as chronic temperature stress undermines kelp growth and health. Ecosystems are complex, and to give them their best chance at surviving these extreme changes, they need all their component parts. Sea otters, of course, are hugely influential for Pacific kelp forests. Historical studies like this are a crucial demonstration of this dynamic over the long term."</p>



<p>The study not only reinforces the importance of conserving the southern sea otter but also highlights the potential of nature-based solutions in restoring kelp forests.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Healthy kelp forests provide numerous benefits, such as serving as nursery grounds for fisheries, mitigating coastal erosion, and aiding in carbon storage. </p>

<p>In an alarming study released today, scientists have focused on a previously overlooked factor in climate change: bottom trawling. </p>



<p>This fishing practice, which involves <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-fleets-hidden-industrial-fishing-activity-exposed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dragging hefty nets</a> across the ocean floor, is not just destructive to marine life and habitats, but also a significant contributor to atmospheric carbon emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bottom-trawling-and-ocean-floor-carbon">Bottom trawling and ocean floor carbon</h2>



<p>The study, conducted by a global team from institutions including <a href="https://www.usu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utah State University</a>, NASA's <a href="https://www.giss.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Institute</a> for Space Studies, and <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.org/society/our-programs/pristine-seas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Geographic Pristine Seas</a>, reveals a startling fact.</p>



<p>55%-60% of the carbon dioxide generated by bottom trawling underwater eventually reaches the atmosphere within nine years. </p>



<p>This revelation is critical as the world grapples with reducing emissions from well-known sources like fossil fuels and deforestation.</p>



<p>“We have long known that dragging heavy fishing nets -- some as large as ten 747 jets -- across the ocean floor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/underwater-mountain-range-hawaii/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">destroys sea life</a> and habitats,” said Dr. Trisha Atwood of Utah State University and National Geographic Pristine Seas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Only recently, we have discovered that bottom trawling also unleashes plumes of carbon, which otherwise would be safely stored for millennia in the ocean floor," said Atwood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-extent-of-bottom-trawling-emissions">Surprising extent of bottom trawling emissions</h2>



<p>The scale of carbon emissions from bottom trawling is alarming. Annually, it doubles the emissions from the global fishing fleet's fuel combustion, comprising about <a href="https://www.fao.org/3/cc0461en/online/sofia/2022/fishing-fleet.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">4 million vessels</a>. </p>



<p>Atwood explains, "Our study is the very first to show that over half the carbon released by bottom trawling eventually escapes into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide over the span of about ten years, contributing to global warming. Much like destroying forests, scraping up the seafloor causes irreparable harm to the climate, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-havens-shipwreck-sites-provide-a-sanctuary-for-marine-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">society and wildlife</a>."</p>



<p>The study titled "Atmospheric CO2 emissions and ocean acidification from bottom-trawling," employed data and advanced models to track bottom trawling activities globally from 1996 to 2020. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California Santa Barbara</a>, <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a>, <a href="https://www.jcu.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Cook University</a> also contributed to this important research.</p>



<p>The findings are a significant leap from <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03371-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previous research</a>, indicating that the carbon dioxide released into the ocean from this practice is comparable to the annual emissions of most countries and similar to those from global aviation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-high-risk-areas">Identifying high risk areas</h2>



<p>Particularly affected regions include the East China Sea, Baltic and North Seas, and the Greenland Sea. There's also concern about Southeast Asia, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, parts of Europe, and the Gulf of Mexico. </p>



<p>However, data limitations in these areas hinder a comprehensive understanding of the full impact.</p>



<p>“Right now, countries don’t account for bottom trawling’s significant carbon emissions in their climate action plans,” said Dr. Enric Sala, National Explorer in Residence and Executive Director of Pristine Seas. </p>



<p>“Our research makes it clear that tackling these and other ocean emissions is critical to slowing the warming of the planet, in addition to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-activities-are-ravaging-adriatic-mollusk-communities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">restoring marine life</a>," Sala continued. </p>



<p>"The good news is that reducing bottom trawling carbon emissions will deliver immediate benefits. The bad news is, delaying action ensures that emissions from trawling will continue seeping into the atmosphere a decade from now.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-calls-for-immediate-action">Implications and calls for immediate action</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study also examines the fate of the carbon that remains in ocean waters post-trawling. Findings suggest that 40%-45% of this carbon stays in the water, exacerbating local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preparing-for-ocean-acidification-a-silent-killer-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean acidification</a> and harming plant and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dolphin-bycatch-from-fishing-activities-is-unsustainable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal life</a>.</p>



<p>“There are more issues with bottom trawling than just the impacts from carbon -- biodiversity and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/billions-of-snow-crabs-vanished-due-to-rising-ocean-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainability</a> for instance,” said Gavin A. Schmidt, the Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. </p>



<p>“But this ‘marine deforestation’ is large enough to be noted and assessed. Hopefully, this can lead to policy efforts that can try to maximize benefits across all of the impacts.”</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
