<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>A new study has identified eight key lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of certain cancers by up to 30 percent. These include limiting red meat intake to three servings per week, avoiding sugary beverages, and maintaining a diet rich in fiber.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Regular physical activity, achieving a healthy weight, and minimizing fast food consumption also play crucial roles. Notably, completely abstaining from alcohol emerges as another critical step in cancer prevention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This research, aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of previously established guidelines by <a href="https://www.wcrf.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The World Cancer Research Fund</a> (WCRF) and the <a href="https://www.aicr.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Institute for Cancer Research</a> (AICR), was conducted by scientists from <a href="https://www.ncl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newcastle University</a>, UK.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study involved analyzing data from 94,778 British adults, averaging 56 years in age, using self-reported information on diet and exercise, along with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>Participants were assessed based on their adherence to seven out of the ten original recommendations. Due to data limitations, some recommendations were excluded from the study such as avoiding cancer-fighting supplements and adhering to medical guidance post-cancer diagnosis.</p>



<p>The researchers tracked cancer diagnoses over an eight-year period using cancer registry data, adjusting for factors like age, sex, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and smoking habits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-on-lifestyle-choices">Critical insights on lifestyle choices</h2>



<p>On a scale of seven, the average adherence score among participants was 3.8. During the study, 7,296 participants (8 percent) were diagnosed with cancer. The findings revealed a clear link between adherence to these lifestyle recommendations and reduced cancer risk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For each additional guideline followed, individuals reduced their cancer risk by seven percent. Specifically, a one-point increase in adherence score correlated with significantly lower risks of various cancers, including breast, colorectal, kidney, esophageal, liver, ovarian, and gallbladder cancers.</p>



<p>Participants with adherence scores of 4.5 or higher exhibited a 16 percent reduced risk of all cancers combined, compared to those scoring 3.5 or less.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hormonal-changes-nbsp">Hormonal changes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study also shed light on the surprising protective role of breastfeeding, possibly due to hormonal changes during lactation that reduce lifetime exposure to estrogen, a factor linked to increased cancer risk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, fast food consumption’s association with cancer was attributed to its contribution to obesity, which can trigger hormonal changes fostering tumor growth.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harmful-compounds-nbsp">Harmful compounds&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Red and processed meats were highlighted for containing potentially harmful compounds, while alcohol was noted for its breakdown into acetaldehyde, a chemical linked to DNA damage and various cancers.</p>



<p>The researchers cautioned that the study’s observational nature means they cannot definitively conclude that adherence to these recommendations caused the lower cancer risk. </p>



<p>However, the findings, published in the journal <a href="https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-023-03107-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>BMC Medicine</em></a>, underscore the importance of lifestyle choices in cancer prevention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Foods that may lower cancer risk</h2>



<p>Several foods are known for their potential to lower cancer risk, due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and nutrient-rich properties. These include:</p>



<ul>
<li>Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.<br></li>



<li>Berries, particularly blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, are rich in antioxidants and vitamins.<br></li>



<li>Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts contain sulforaphane, a compound thought to have anti-cancer properties.<br></li>



<li>Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats offer dietary fiber, which is linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer.<br></li>



<li>Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, an antioxidant linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer.<br></li>



<li>Garlic and onions have sulfur compounds that might have anti-cancer effects.<br></li>



<li>Nuts, particularly walnuts and almonds, are rich in beneficial nutrients and healthy fats.<br></li>



<li>Turmeric, a spice containing curcumin, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.<br></li>



<li>Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects.<br></li>

<p>Cancer risk can be significantly influenced by various lifestyle factors. Smoking is perhaps the most well-known and significant risk factor for many types of cancer, including lung, throat, mouth, and bladder cancer. Similarly, excessive alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of cancers such as liver, breast, and esophagus cancer.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diet">Diet</h3>



<p>Diet also plays a critical role. Diets high in processed meats and low in fruits and vegetables can contribute to higher cancer risk. In particular, processed and red meats are associated with colorectal cancer. Obesity is another significant risk factor, increasing the risk of several cancers including breast, colon, and kidney cancers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-physical-activity">Physical activity</h3>



<p>Physical inactivity contributes to cancer risk indirectly by increasing the likelihood of obesity, but it may also have a direct impact. Regular physical activity is known to reduce the risk of certain cancers, including breast and colon cancer.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ultraviolet-radiation">Ultraviolet radiation</h3>



<p>Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds significantly increases the risk of skin cancers, including melanoma. Safe sun practices, such as using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing, are important preventive measures.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollutants-and-chemicals-nbsp">Pollutants and chemicals&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Other lifestyle factors include exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals, which can increase cancer risk. This includes exposure to asbestos, certain chemicals in the workplace, and air pollution.</p>

<p>Additionally, certain infections, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B and C, are linked to cancer. Vaccinations and other preventive measures can reduce the risk of cancers associated with these viruses.</p>

<p>A study from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> (UW) offers new insights into the health risks associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/">air pollution</a> from congested city roadways. The findings reveal the direct impact of traffic pollution on blood pressure.</p>



<p>The experts have found that exposure to unfiltered air during rush-hour traffic not only elevates passengers' blood pressure in the moment, but maintains this increase for up to 24 hours.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traffic-pollution-nbsp">Traffic pollution&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This research, led by Dr. Joel Kaufman, signifies a critical advancement in understanding the health risks associated with traffic pollution.</p>



<p>“The body has a complex set of systems to try to keep blood pressure to your brain the same all the time. It’s a very complex, tightly regulated system, and it appears that somewhere, in one of those mechanisms, traffic-related air pollution interferes with blood pressure," said Dr. Kaufman.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings build on Kaufman’s earlier research, which showed that diesel exhaust fumes could raise blood pressure in a controlled environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The new study aimed to replicate these findings in a real-world scenario by testing the impact of traffic pollution on healthy individuals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>For the investigation, participants between the ages of 22 and 45 were driven through Seattle's rush-hour traffic.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their blood pressure was monitored under two different conditions: exposure to unfiltered road air and drives with air filtered through high-quality HEPA filters, reducing particulate pollution by 86%.</p>



<p>The participants were unaware of the type of air they were exposed to during each drive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-on-traffic-pollution">Critical insights on traffic pollution</h2>



<p>The results showed that breathing unfiltered air led to an average increase in blood pressure of more than 4.50 mm Hg compared to filtered air drives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This spike in blood pressure occurred rapidly, within about an hour into the drive, and persisted for at least 24 hours. Notably, the effect of this increase is comparable to that of a high-sodium diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dr. Kaufman highlighted the broader implications of these findings. “We know that modest increases in blood pressure like this, on a population level, are associated with a significant increase in cardiovascular disease."&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There is a growing understanding that air pollution contributes to heart problems. The idea that roadway air pollution at relatively low levels can affect blood pressure this much is an important piece of the puzzle we’re trying to solve.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traffic-pollution-creates-ultrafine-particles">Traffic pollution creates ultrafine particles </h2>



<p>Another critical aspect of the study is its focus on ultrafine particles, a type of pollutant less than 100 nanometers in diameter and unregulated.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These ultrafine particles, abundant in traffic-related air pollution, were significantly reduced in the filtered air experiments, suggesting their potential role in affecting blood pressure.</p>



<p>"Ultrafine particles are the pollutant that were most effectively filtered in our experiment – in other words, where the levels are most dramatically high on the road and low in the filtered environment,” Kaufman said. “So, the hint is that ultrafines may be especially important [for blood pressure]. To actually prove that requires further research, but this study provides a very strong clue as to what’s going on.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dr. Kaufman notes the need for further research to conclusively establish this link. Nonetheless, the study stands out for its real-world application, moving beyond laboratory settings to replicate actual conditions millions experience daily.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-findings-nbsp">Valuable findings&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Michael Young, a former UW postdoctoral fellow and lead author of the study, praises the design for isolating the impact of air pollution from other roadway factors like stress and noise.</p>



<p>“This study is exciting because it takes the gold-standard design for laboratory studies and applies it in an on-roadway setting, answering an important question about the health effects of real-world exposures," said Young.</p>



<p>"Studies on this topic often have a challenging time separating the effects of pollution from other roadway exposures like stress and noise, but with our approach the only difference between drive days was air pollution concentration."</p>



<p>"The findings are valuable because they can reproduce situations that millions of people actually experience every day.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.7326/M23-1309" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Annals of Internal Medicine</em></a><em>.</em></p>

<p>In a recent study led by Dr. Shawn Olsen at the <a href="https://alleninstitute.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Allen Institute</a>, researchers have made significant strides in understanding how our brains perceive - or fail to perceive - visual stimuli. The research, focusing on a mind-blowing phenomenon known as visual masking, reveals intriguing insights into the mechanisms of conscious perception in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/">brain</a>.</p>

<p>From previous studies, the scientists knew that neurons in the retina and parts of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> in that pathway are activated even when a person is not aware that they are seeing an image. This means that your brain can see things without your knowledge.</p>

<p>Dr. Olsen and his team, including Dr. Christof Koch and Dr. Sam Gale, trained mice to respond to visual stimuli. The mice were taught to turn a tiny LEGO wheel in the direction of a briefly flashed image to receive a treat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When a masking image was introduced immediately after the target image, the mice failed to perform the task correctly, indicating a loss of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/children-and-adults-perceive-time-differently/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conscious perception</a> of the original image.</p>



<p>“This is an interesting observation, where what is present in the world is not accurately reflected in your perception,” said Dr. Olsen. “Like other visual illusions, we think that it tells us something about the way the visual system works and ultimately about the neural circuits that underlie visual awareness.”</p>

<p>The experts wanted to confirm that the optical illusion they showed the rodents is relevant to humans. They tested 16 people using a keystroke instead of the wheel. The results showed that human and mouse perception - or lack thereof - is very similar.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The fact that human and mouse perceptions of this visual masking illusion were similar reinforces the theory that conscious perception resides in the cortex of mammals. That fits with the general sentiment in the field that the cortex is the seat of conscious perception in mammals, including us, said Dr. Koch.</p>

<p>The colossal, cryovolcanic "devil <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/comet-nishimura-may-approach-earth-so-closely-that-it-will-be-visible-to-the-naked-eye/">comet</a>," three times larger than Mount Everest, has experienced yet another explosive event as it makes its way toward Earth. The comet, also known as 12P/Pons-Brooks, earned its nickname after two devil-like horns appeared during previous outbursts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-12p-pons-brooks-has-massive-outburst">12P/Pons-Brooks has massive outburst</h2>



<p>Just two days ago, 12P/Pons-Brooks exploded for the fourth time. Experts say the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-comet-impact-triggered-the-invention-of-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">comet</a> released the largest outburst yet, abruptly brightening by more than 100 times. </p>



<p>According to experts, the devil comet became as bright as the Elliptical Galaxy - which is located 600 million light years from Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-activity">Increasing activity</h2>



<p>Eliot Herman, an amateur astronomer based in Arizona, has been <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/eliot_photos/53333910354/in/photostream/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tracking</a> the cryovolcanic comet. He shared in a post: "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12P/Pons%E2%80%93Brooks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Comet 12P</a> appears to be manifesting more frequent outbursts, a new outburst only two weeks from the prior outburst is now apparent."</p>



<p>This "cold volcano" <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ghostly-green-comet-is-now-visible-to-the-naked-eye/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">comet</a>, approximately 18 miles in diameter, is notorious for its violent ejections of ice and gas. This activity created the trail that resembled devil horns, making it a fascinating spectacle in space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closest-approach-of-12p-pons-brooks">Closest approach of 12P/Pons-Brooks</h2>



<p>Discovered in 1812, 12P/Pons-Brooks is on a trajectory that will bring it closest to Earth in June 2024. Despite its proximity, it poses no threat to our planet. During this approach, it will be visible as a faint, star-like object with a distinct tail, even to the naked eye.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cryovolcanic-comet-behavior">Cryovolcanic comet behavior </h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bouncing-comets-could-deliver-lifes-building-blocks-to-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Comets</a> like 12P/Pons-Brooks are made up of an icy nucleus surrounded by a coma - a cloud of gas and dust. Its classification as a cryovolcanic comet indicates that it exhibits volcanic behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, instead of ejecting molten rock, it releases gasses and ice, particularly when nearing the sun. As the comet approaches the sun, the increase in temperature and pressure leads to explosive releases of nitrogen and carbon monoxide, pushing out icy fragments from the nucleus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dramatic-brightening-nbsp">Dramatic brightening&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Herman had previously observed a dramatic brightening of the comet on October 31, indicating a fresh burst of cryovolcanic activity. That outburst marked the second in a month and the third since July.</p>



<p>12P/Pons-Brooks orbits the sun, attracted by its gravitational pull, and completes this journey in 71 years. This period is relatively short compared to most comets, which may take thousands of years to orbit the sun.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-highly-elliptical-orbits">Highly elliptical orbits</h2>



<p>Comets like 12P/Pons-Brooks have highly elliptical orbits, bringing them close to the sun at perihelion and far away at aphelion. As they near the sun, their speed increases significantly.</p>



<p>Currently, the devil comet is hurtling towards the sun at over 40,000 miles per hour. This speed is expected to increase to over 100,000 miles per hour as it approaches its perihelion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Its closest encounter with the sun will occur on April 21 next year, followed by a close approach to Earth on June 2. After this encounter, the comet will be propelled back to the outer solar system, not returning until 2095.</p>

<p>Long-period comets have orbits extending over 200 years. Astronomers believe they come from the Oort Cloud, a distant spherical shell surrounding the solar system.</p>

<p>A recent scientific discovery could be straight out of a science fiction novel. Researchers involved in the Telescope Array experiment have identified an extraordinarily energetic cosmic ray. <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Amaterasu_cosmic-ray_Credit-Osaka-Metropolitan-University_1medium-scaled.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">This particle</a>, named “Amaterasu,” originated from outside our galaxy and boasts an energy level of approximately 240 exa-electron volts (EeV). </p>



<p>Despite its remarkable detection, the analysis reveals that the direction from which this cosmic ray arrived does not align with any discernible source.</p>



<p>Cosmic rays are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-surges-of-cosmic-radiation-from-space-directly-linked-to-earthquakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">not just particles</a> from space; they are energetic charged particles that come from both galactic and extragalactic sources. Among these, the extremely high-energy cosmic rays are particularly rare and fascinating. </p>



<p>These rays can possess <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recent-gamma-ray-burst-was-70-times-brighter-than-any-cosmic-explosion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energy levels</a> greater than 10^18 electron volts (EeV), a figure that is about a million times higher than the energy achievable by the most powerful human-made accelerators. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-telescope-array-experiment">The Telescope Array experiment</h2>



<p>Associate Professor Toshihiro Fujii is from the Graduate School of Science and <a href="https://www.nitep.osaka-cu.ac.jp/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nambu Yoichiro Institute</a> of Theoretical and Experimental Physics at <a href="https://www.omu.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osaka Metropolitan University</a>. Since 2008, Professor Fujii, alongside an international team, has been at the forefront of the <a href="https://www.telescopearray.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Telescope Array</a> experiment. </p>



<p>This experiment involves a cosmic ray detector comprising 507 scintillator surface stations spread over an area of 700 square kilometers in Utah, United States. On May 27, 2021, this team made a groundbreaking discovery: they detected a particle with an energy level of 244 EeV.</p>



<p>“When I first discovered this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-detect-highest-energy-gamma-rays-ever-from-a-pulsar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultra-high-energy</a> cosmic ray, I thought there must have been a mistake, as it showed an energy level unprecedented in the last 3 decades,” Professor Fujii remarked.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-amaterasu-particle">The Amaterasu particle</h2>



<p>This newly detected particle has been named "Amaterasu," after the sun goddess in Shinto religion, who is believed to have played a crucial role in the creation of Japan. </p>



<p>The Amaterasu particle's energy level is comparable to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh-My-God_particle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">"Oh-My-God" particle</a>, which held the record for the most energetic cosmic ray with an estimated energy of 320 EeV when detected in 1991.</p>

This suggests the possibility of unknown astronomical phenomena or novel physical origins that extend beyond the current Standard Model of particle physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research">Ongoing research</h2>



<p>Professor Fujii and his team are committed to continuing their research with the Telescope Array experiment. They are also involved in an upgraded experiment, known as TAx4, which promises four times the sensitivity of the current setup. Along with next-generation observatories, these advancements will aid in a more detailed investigation into the source of this extremely energetic particle.</p>

<p>A study from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a> has shed new light on the origins of life's essential building blocks. The researchers have discovered that carbamic acid, a simple amino acid, may have formed in the icy environments near newborn stars or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trillions-of-rogue-planets-may-be-wandering-alone-in-our-galaxy/">planets</a>. </p>



<p>This finding challenges the traditional belief that life's building blocks originated solely on early Earth, suggesting a cosmic genesis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prebiotic-molecules-nbsp">Prebiotic molecules&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Life on Earth is a relatively recent phenomenon in geological terms, but the components that led to its formation could be significantly older.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study proposes that prebiotic molecules, instead of originating in the oceans of early Earth, might have been birthed in the extreme cold of interstellar ices. These ices, composed of water and various gases, are found in the frigid realms of space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-amino-acids">Origins of amino acids</h2>



<p>Previously, it was believed that amino acids, crucial for life, were products of reactions on prebiotic Earth or were brought to our planet by meteorites.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The meteorite theory suggests that these molecules were collected by space rocks from interstellar ices or cosmic dust. However, the origins and formation period of these building blocks remained a mystery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-model-ices">Model ices</h2>



<p>To investigate, a research team led by Ralf Kaiser and Agnes Chang conducted experiments simulating conditions in interstellar ices. They created model ices with ammonia and carbon dioxide and observed their chemical reactions as they were gradually warmed on a silver substrate.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the researchers detected the formation of carbamic acid and ammonium carbamate at extremely low temperatures of -348 and -389 degrees Fahrenheit (62 and 39 Kelvin). This indicates that these molecules, precursors to complex amino acids, could have formed during the earliest and coldest phases of star development.</p>



<p>"Ices observed spectroscopically in molecular clouds are predominantly water, unlike model ices employed here; however, the reaction products observed have also been identified with FTIR in model ices composed primarily of water," noted the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>The team discovered that at higher temperatures comparable to those near a new star, two carbamic acid molecules could combine to form a stable gas. The molecules could have been part of the raw materials of solar systems, including ours, and later delivered to early Earth by comets or meteorites.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for deep space exploration. Instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope could be trained to search for these prebiotic molecules in distant, star-forming regions, potentially unraveling more secrets about the origins of life.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study was supported by the Division for Astronomy of the U.S. National Science Foundation, the W.M. Keck Foundation, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.</p>

<p>A biotech firm based in San Francisco (<a href="https://loyalfordogs.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loyal</a>), is making strides in the development of a drug that could potentially increase the lifespan of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-do-small-dogs-live-longer-than-large-breeds/">dogs</a> by at least one year. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Food and Drug Administration for Veterinary Medicine</a> recently affirmed that the data for Loyal’s drug candidate, LOY-001, shows promising signs of effectiveness. This advancement brings the possibility of veterinarians prescribing this longevity drug to our canine companions a step closer to reality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-dog-breeds-nbsp">Large dog breeds&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Slated for a 2026 launch, LOY-001 is designed to specifically target cellular mechanisms in large and giant dog breeds. These breeds, known for their rapid aging and shorter lifespans compared to smaller breeds, could benefit significantly from this intervention.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The extreme phenotypic variety found in dogs is not ‘natural’ - it’s the result of intensive breeding by humans to create dogs that excelled at tasks such as herding, protection, and companionship,” explained Brennen McKenzie, Loyal’s director of veterinary medicine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-the-drug-work">How does the drug work?</h2>



<p>The drug operates by addressing the genetic anomaly of increased IGF-1 levels, a growth-promoting hormone, which is believed to curtail the lifespan of larger dogs. Studies indicate that larger dogs have IGF-1 levels up to 28 times higher than those of smaller breeds. LOY-001 seeks to reduce these levels, thereby potentially extending the healthy life of larger dogs.</p>



<p>Loyal’s research indicates that this innovative drug development could offer hope in extending the lifespan and healthspan of large dogs by targeting mechanisms associated with their accelerated aging. The drug, if approved, would be administered by vets as an injection every three to six months, but only for dogs that are seven years or older and weigh at least 40 pounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-research-implications-nbsp">Research implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Loyal is also working on other products like LOY-002, a daily pill for medium to giant breeds, and LOY-003, targeting large and giant breeds only. Celine Halioua, Loyal’s CEO, envisions that this is just the beginning, with potential implications for human longevity as well. “We are not going to make 80-year-old dogs,” Halioua stated, emphasizing the realistic goals of their research.</p>



<p>Inspired by her experience in an oncology clinic at 18, Halioua was moved to tackle aging in dogs. “Feeling that lack of freewill, that lack of ability to control your destiny when it comes to your health completely freaked me out,” she said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clinical-trial-phase">Clinical trial phase</h2>



<p>Currently, Loyal is in the "companion dog clinical study" phase, conducting large-scale nationwide studies to evaluate the drug’s safety and efficacy in real-world veterinary settings. With over 1,000 dogs across the US participating in this four-year study, Loyal aims to conduct thorough testing before seeking FDA approval for prescription use.</p>



<p>Loyal, a subsidiary of Cellular Longevity, a San Francisco-based biotech firm, focuses on researching how drugs can control pathological aging mechanisms to prolong life. This endeavor to delay the onset and reduce the severity of age-related diseases could mark a significant advancement in veterinary medicine and beyond.</p>

<p>Tumor imaging has advanced significantly, offering detailed insights into the microscopic world of tumors. However, these advances have led to a new challenge: the interpretation of an enormous amount of generated data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Advances in multiplex histology allow surveying millions of cells, dozens of cell types, and up to thousands of phenotypes within the spatial context of tissue sections," noted the researchers.</p>

<p>Traditional imaging methods can measure hundreds of molecules in thousands of cells, but discerning which molecules and cells are crucial has become increasingly complex.</p>

However, traditional AI often operates as a "black box," performing tasks without providing explanations understandable to human researchers. This lack of transparency in AI processes has been a significant hurdle in its application to medical research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-satellite-image-interpretation-nbsp">Satellite image interpretation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Seeking a solution, the team turned to techniques from different fields. They drew inspiration from analysis methods in satellite imaging and ecology, dating back to the 1950s and 2000s.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Satellite imaging AI is adept at identifying varied geographical features in large images, such as cities and forests. Similarly, ecological techniques analyze how different species coexist in a geographic area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turning-complex-data-into-new-insights-nbsp">Turning complex data into new insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“We realized that the interpretation of tumor images is similar to the interpretation of satellite images and that the relationships between cells in a tissue are similar to the relationships between species in ecology,” explained senior researcher Jean Hausser.</p>



<p>“By combining techniques used in satellite imaging and ecology and adapting them for the analysis of tumor tissue, we have now been able to turn complex data into new insights into how cancer works.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-personalized-cancer-treatment-nbsp">Personalized cancer treatment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Looking ahead, the researchers plan to implement this method in clinical trials. Collaborations are underway with a major cancer hospital in Lyon, France, to understand the varied responses to cancer immunotherapy among patients.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another partnership with the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. will focus on why certain breast cancer patients may not require chemotherapy. This cross-disciplinary approach holds promise for significantly advancing personalized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-treatment-could-be-transformed-by-shape-shifting-macrophages/">cancer treatment</a>, offering new hope for patients worldwide.</p>



<p>“With our new method, we can reveal important details in tumor tissue that can determine whether a cancer treatment works or not. The long-term goal is to be able to tailor cancer treatments to individual needs and avoid unnecessary side effects,” said Hausser.</p>

Cancer research: AI will change the way we see tumors

<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://www.uva.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Amsterdam</a> have made a significant discovery regarding newborn babies, music, and "beat" perception. The research confirms that newborns have rhythm and can recognize the beat in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-can-prevent-brain-aging-and-cognitive-decline/">music</a>. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that the ability to perceive a music beat is an innate cognitive mechanism - distinct from other learning processes - that is active from the very beginning of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-babies-perceive-music">How babies perceive music</h2>



<p>"There is still a lot we don't know about how newborn babies perceive, remember and process <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-as-a-pain-reliever-the-power-of-your-playlist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a>," study's lead author Professor Henkjan Honing. </p>



<p>"But, in 2009, we found clear indications that babies of just a few days old have the ability to hear a regular pulse in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-activity-reveals-connection-between-music-and-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">music</a> -- the beat -- a characteristic that is considered essential for making and appreciating music."</p>



<p>To further explore this phenomenon, the researchers conducted an experiment with 27 newborn babies. The goal was to distinguish between the babies' ability to learn the order of sounds in a drum rhythm (statistical learning) and their capacity to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-prefer-listening-to-live-music-than-to-a-recording-of-the-same-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recognize a beat</a> (beat-induction). </p>



<p>This distinction is crucial in understanding how beat perception operates as a separate cognitive mechanism from birth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>The method involved presenting two versions of a drum rhythm to the babies via headphones. The first version had an isochronous timing, maintaining equal intervals between sounds, enabling the perception of a pulse or beat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The second version had the same drum pattern but with random timing (jittered), making beat perception impossible, though the sequence of sounds could still be learned.</p>



<p>Due to the challenges in observing behavioral responses in newborns, the study relied on brain wave measurements (EEG) taken while the babies slept. This approach allowed the researchers to observe the brain responses to the different rhythm versions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights-into-babies-and-music">Key insights into babies and music</h2>



<p>The experts found that when the rhythm had regular intervals, the babies' brain responses indicated they heard the beat. However, when the timing was irregular, the beat was not perceived.</p>



<p>"This crucial difference confirms that being able to hear the beat is innate and not simply the result of learned sound sequences," said study author István Winkler, a professor at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology at the HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences (TTK).&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Our findings suggest that it is a specific skill of newborns and make clear how important baby and nursery rhymes are for the auditory development of young children. More insight into early perception is of great importance for learning more about infant cognition and the role that musical skills may play in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-promotes-social-development-in-infants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early development</a>."</p>

<p>The research not only adds a new dimension to our understanding of cognitive development in newborns but also highlights the intrinsic connection between humans and music from birth.</p>



<p>"Most people can easily pick up the beat in music and judge whether the music is getting faster or slower – it seems like an inconsequential skill," said Professor Honing.</p>



<p>"However, since perceiving regularity in music is what allows us to dance and make music together, it is not a trivial phenomenon. In fact, beat perception can be considered a fundamental human trait that must have played a crucial role in the evolution of our capacity for music."</p>

They found only slight and inconsistent changes in global well-being and mental health. </p>



<p>"We looked very hard for a ‘smoking gun’ linking technology and well-being and we didn’t find it," states Professor Przybylski.</p>



<p>The study is notable for its breadth, examining the largest dataset on well-being and<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/swedish-pediatricians-no-screen-time-for-children-under-two/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> internet adoption</a> to date. Professor Vuorre notes, "Although we couldn’t address causal effects of internet use, our descriptive results indicated small and inconsistent associations."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-demographic-insights">Demographic insights</h2>



<p>Contrary to common beliefs, the study found no specific demographic patterns among internet users, regardless of age or gender. Interestingly, for the average country, life satisfaction increased more for females over the period. Professor Przybylski asserts, "There is no evidence to support popular ideas that certain groups are more at risk."</p>



<p>The research team also explored the relationship between mobile broadband adoption and life satisfaction. They discovered a positive correlation, but the association was too insignificant to hold practical relevance.</p>

<p>Low-intensity fires can significantly mitigate the risk of devastating wildfires, according to new research from <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health</a> and Stanford University. </p>



<p>The study reveals that practices like controlled burns, managed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-massive-amounts-of-methane-gas-spews-from-wildfires/">wildfires</a>, and tribal cultural burning can decrease the risk of catastrophic fires by 60 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The analysis was focused on over 100,000 square kilometers of California forests. This research is particularly relevant, as it comes five years after California's deadliest wildfire, the Camp Fire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The goal of this paper is to provide a unified analysis of fire dynamics across California’s forests, based on 20 years of continuous, satellite-based monitoring of wildfires. We consider data from all fires detected by satellite monitoring in California’s conifer and hardwood forests during our study period," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Using these data, we seek to measure whether areas that burn at low intensity are less likely to experience high-intensity wildfire in the future - and how long any such protective effect lasts."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-focus-nbsp">Broader focus&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“It’s no secret that wildfire-prone regions need to shift from a single-minded focus on suppression to one that includes much more controlled burning and forest resilience,” said study lead author Xaio Wu.</p>



<p>“However, until now, studies assessing the beneficial effects of prescribed and low-intensity fires have been limited to relatively small areas, such as a single wilderness area or watershed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-approach-nbsp">Unique approach&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To measure the protective effect of low-intensity fires, the team used a method that assembled unburned areas into a synthetic landscape closely resembling the burned landscapes’ attributes - such as weather patterns, elevation, vegetation type, and disturbance history.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the experts, this approach allowed them to assess how these burned landscapes might have evolved had they not burned in that same year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>The experts found that low-intensity fire in mixed conifer forests in California initially provides a 60 percent reduction in risk of catastrophic fire. This reduced risk lasts at least six years but diminishes over time.</p>

<p>The U.S. Forest Service has proposed treating nearly 200,000 square kilometers over the next decade, and California plans to increase its land treatment for wildfires to 2,000 square kilometers annually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildland-fuel-treatments-nbsp">Wildland fuel treatments&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study emphasizes that for wildland fuel treatments to be effective, they must be ongoing and periodic, especially for forests near communities or critical infrastructure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The purpose of fuel treatments is not to exclude all future fires, but rather to increase the likelihood that, upon the inception of a fire within a designated area, the fire remains low to moderate intensity and exhibits a reduced rate of spread," explained the researchers.</p>



<p>"This mitigation strategy provides windows of opportunity for control through the allocation of additional suppression resources and reduces the potential for the fire to develop into a high-intensity fire."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-solutions">Practical solutions</h2>



<p>The risk mitigation benefit of low-intensity burning depends on careful selection and targeting of the intervention to maximize protection for people, communities, and ecosystems.</p>



<p>“This study exemplifies how data science can contribute to climate mitigation through a highly multidisciplinary collaboration,” said Wu. “Wildfires present substantial threats to both our ecosystems and human well-being. As scientists, our constant goal is to find practical solutions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications">Study implications</h2>



<p>“I’m hopeful that policymakers will rely on this work as motivation and support for the scale-up of beneficial fire as a key strategy in preventing wildfire catastrophes,” said study co-author Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy Policy Program at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Beneficial fire is not without its own risks – but what our study shows is just how large and long-lasting the benefits are of this crucial risk reduction strategy."</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
