Hotter summers are not just uncomfortable, they also changing the odds of getting sick from food. A new analysis links warmer air, higher moisture, specific dewpoint ranges, and longer daylight to spikes in Salmonella infections across two European countries. 



The team showed that risk climbs when average temperatures rise above about 50°F and days stretch past 12 to 15 hours.



Lead author <a href="https://www.londonntd.org/research/researchers/laura-c-gonzalez-villeta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Laura C. González Villeta</a> of the University of Surrey’s <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-veterinary-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Veterinary Medicine</a> led work that tied laboratory confirmed Salmonella cases to local weather conditions using a transparent statistical approach.



The bacteria called Salmonella cause <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15697-salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food poisoning</a> that often brings diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Common symptoms usually start within hours to a few days and most people recover without treatment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-the-weather">Salmonella and the weather</h2>



Researchers linked daily case counts from the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-health-security-agency" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Health Security Agency</a> to detailed weather from the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>, then checked the model with national surveillance data from the Netherlands. 



They examined 14 factors, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, sunshine, and dewpoint temperature.



Instead of forcing a complex equation to fit the data, the group calculated a conditional incidence that directly describes how often cases occur when specific combinations of weather are present. 



That method lets you see which trio of conditions lines up with higher infection counts without hiding the signal inside a black box.



The approach showed consistency when moved from one country to another after accounting for reporting differences. That matters because public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/to-get-fit-and-stay-healthy-walk-this-exact-distance-every-day/">health</a> tools work best when they travel across borders without losing accuracy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-model-found">What the model found</h2>



Risk rose when average air temperatures topped roughly 50°F, day length sat between 12 and 15 hours, and dewpoint hovered around the mid 40s to about 50°F. The same pattern appeared regardless of location.



Not every weather knob seemed important. Wind speed, air pressure, and sunshine duration had little or no association with reported cases in this dataset.



Seasonal peaks in late summer were reproduced when the model fed on local weather. That gave officials a way to anticipate risk based on last week’s skies rather than waiting for lab reports to trickle in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-weather-boosts-salmonella">How weather boosts Salmonella</h2>



Broader evidence lines up with these findings. A large <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11530612/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> of 23 Salmonella studies found about a 5 percent rise in risk for every 1.8°F increase in temperature.



Europe’s outbreak history shows why this topic matters. In 2018, nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the European Union were caused by Salmonella, according to an EFSA <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/salmonella-most-common-cause-foodborne-outbreaks-european-union" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>.



That baseline risk has not disappeared in recent years. Surveillance summaries still identify Salmonella as a leading cause of foodborne outbreaks across the region, with eggs and mixed foods often involved, as noted in EFSA’s public <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/7666" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">publication</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-public-health">What this means for public health</h2>



“The study highlights how weather plays a significant role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-overlooked-sources-of-antibiotic-resistant-salmonella/">Salmonella</a> outbreaks and provides a valuable tool for predicting future risks and tailoring interventions, particularly in the context of climate change,” said Dr. Villeta. The work is not just about describing patterns.&nbsp;



Weather aware forecasting can help agencies time inspections, target hygiene messaging, and plan surge capacity when the odds of illness tick up. 



Food businesses can also adjust cold chain checks, staff training, and consumer advice when riskier conditions line up.



Individuals are not powerless either. Keep cold foods cold, cook poultry and eggs to safe temperatures, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, and wash hands and surfaces, especially when the air is warm and the day runs long.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-tech-forecasting-tools">High-tech forecasting tools</h2>



Most forecasting tools lean on regression or time series fits that struggle with tangled, non linear interactions. 



The conditional incidence approach shows how combinations of temperature, humidity, and daylight align with cases, which is easier to interpret and to explain.



That clarity helps separate what drives risk from noise. It also allows public health teams to identify factor combinations that do not explain much, saving effort where it will not pay off.



Model outputs replicated real world peaks and mapped risk at fine spatial scales. That is the level where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-screen-time-shapes-their-mental-health-as-teens/">health</a> departments and food producers make day to day choices.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-and-next-steps">Limits and next steps</h2>



The model tracks reported cases, which understate total infections. Even so, de trending and validation across two countries suggest the weather signals are real.



Future tests in different climates and income settings would show how far the method travels. Adding data on livestock density, land use, and consumer behavior could sharpen predictions without losing transparency.



Better early warnings do not replace basic food safety, but they can make those steps more timely. That is useful as warmer summers and longer heat seasons become more common.

If you've been sensing something feverish about the Earth recently, you're far from alone. The symptoms of climate change are alarmingly clear, and worsening every year. The climate report for the year 2023 was no respite, echoing this fevered sentiment.



Escalating sea levels, record-smashing temperatures, swelling greenhouse gas levels, and a spike in extreme weather calamities are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-annual-climate-report-issued">Alarming annual climate report issued</h2>



The annual international review of the world’s climate, led by scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (<a href="https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCEI</a>) and published by the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (<a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/bams/bams-overview.xml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BAMS</a>), brings together nearly 600 scientists from 60 countries.



It offers a comprehensive update on Earth’s climate indicators, key weather events, and other data collected from monitoring stations and instruments on land, water, ice, and even in space.



“The BAMS State of the Climate report is the product of an international effort to more fully understand global climate conditions in 2023,” said NCEI Director Derek Arndt. “This report documents and shares a startling, but well established picture.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-climate-change">Global climate change </h2>



The year 2023 hoisted some discomforting 'first-place' flags - greenhouse gas accumulation, land and sea temperatures, the global sea level, and oceanic heat content; they all reached new all-time highs.



Here are the stats to take note of: the annual global surface temperature registered an increase of 0.99 to 1.08 degrees F (0.55 to 0.60 degrees C) against the 1991–2020 baseline. 



This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature spike</a> makes 2023 the warmest year since record-keeping began in the 19th century, toppling 2016 from its reigning pedestal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-record-warmth">Decoding the record warmth</h2>



But what's heating up our home planet to this extent? The transition from La Nina conditions early in 2023 to a potent El Nino witnessed sea surface temperatures ascend to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-make-your-hometown-feel-like-somewhere-else/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">record levels</a>. 



From June through December, every month shattered previous warmth records. On August 22, 2023, a staggering globally averaged daily sea-surface temperature of 66.18 degrees F (18.99 degrees C) was clocked.



Making matters less cozy, the atmospheric big three - carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide - reached unprecedented spikes. 



Over the prior decade, the annual global mean CO2 growth skyrocketed, averaging 2.5 parts per million (ppm) per year, a steep climb from the 0.6 ± 0.1 ppm per year rise in the early 1960s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-rippling-effect">Climate change rippling effect</h2>



The repercussions from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-days-getting-longer-rotation-slows-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolving climate landscape</a> are strikingly clear. Extreme weather episodes are increasingly becoming the new normal. From scorching heatwaves to harsh droughts to wild fires blazing across the globe. 



In Canada, approximately 37 million acres were scorched during the late spring and record-warm summer, forcing nearly 232,000 people to evacuate their homes.



Europe and Australia's Northern Territory were no exceptions, experiencing their largest wildfire since 2000 and long-lasting bushfires, respectively.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-alarm-and-antarctic-anxiety">Arctic alarm and Antarctic anxiety</h2>



The polar frontiers weren't exempted from the heat wave either. The Arctic posted its fourth warmest year, while Antarctic sea ice levels slumped to new record lows throughout 2023. 



The Arctic ice, particularly multiyear ice (ice that survives at least one summer melt season), is melting at a frighteningly rapid pace. Since 2012, the Arctic has been nearly devoid of ice older than four years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cyclones-decelerate">Cyclones decelerate </h2>



In an unexpected turn of events, the year 2023 saw below-average tropical cyclone activity, reporting a total of 82 named storms. 



While this might suggest a quieter season, it's crucial not to let the statistics create a false sense of security.



Among these 82 cyclones, a noteworthy seven escalated their intensity, reaching the formidable Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. 



This category signifies winds of 157 mph or higher, indicating that these storms were exceptionally powerful and destructive. 



Such intensity can lead to catastrophic impacts on coastal communities, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, awareness, and respect for the unpredictable nature of weather patterns.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-damage-dossier">Climate damage dossier</h2>



The live-action drama of climate change is far from a pleasure watch. However, it's a reality we cannot shirk.

Record-high temperatures, greenhouse gases, and sea-level rise reached in 2023

New research from Northwestern University has demonstrated that a mild electrical current can significantly strengthen marine coastlines, providing a potential long-term solution to combat sand erosion caused by climate change and rising sea levels.



In this study, the researchers were inspired by marine organisms like clams and mussels, which use dissolved minerals in seawater to build their shells.&nbsp;



The researchers applied a similar concept, using naturally occurring dissolved minerals to create a natural cement between grains of sand, transforming them into a rock-like solid. However, instead of using metabolic energy as mollusks do, they used electrical energy to trigger the chemical reaction.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-combating-sand-erosion-with-electricity">Combating sand erosion with electricity </h2>



Laboratory experiments showed that a mild electrical current instantly altered the structure of marine sand, making it a solid, immovable material. The researchers believe this method could offer a sustainable, low-cost solution for reinforcing coastlines around the world.



Study senior author Alessandro Rotta Loria is a civil and environmental engineer at <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern</a>. 



“Over 40% of the world’s population lives in coastal areas. Because of climate change and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cost-coastal-cities-over-1-trillion-in-damages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea-level rise</a>, erosion is an enormous threat to these communities,” said Rotta Loria.



“Through the disintegration of infrastructure and loss of land, erosion causes billions of dollars in damage per year worldwide. Current approaches to mitigate erosion involve building protection structures or injecting external binders into the subsurface.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strengthening-the-coast-without-structures">Strengthening the coast without structures</h2>



Rotta Loria said that his goal was to develop an approach capable of changing the status quo in coastal protection - one that didn’t require the construction of protection structures and could cement marine substrates without using actual cement.&nbsp;



“By applying a mild electric stimulation to marine soils, we systematically and mechanistically proved that it is possible to cement them by turning naturally dissolved minerals in seawater into solid mineral binders - a natural cement.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-rise-of-coastal-sand-erosion">The rise of coastal sand erosion</h2>



As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burdens-of-climate-change-sea-level-rise-and-the-risk-of-isolation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> intensifies storms and raises sea levels, coastal erosion is becoming a more severe problem. According to a 2020 <a href="https://nature.com/articles/s41558-020-0697-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> by the European Commission’s Joint Research Center, nearly 26% of the Earth’s beaches could disappear by the end of this century.



Communities typically respond to this threat by building sea walls or injecting cement into the ground to strengthen the sandy marine substrates. However, these conventional methods have significant downsides: they are extremely expensive and often fail to last.



“Sea walls, too, suffer from erosion. So, over time, the sand beneath these walls erodes, and the walls can eventually collapse. Oftentimes, protection structures are made of big stones, which cost millions of dollars per mile. However, the sand beneath them can essentially liquify because of a number of environmental stressors, and these big rocks are swallowed by the ground beneath them,” said Rotta Loria.



“Injecting cement and other binders into the ground has a number of irreversible environmental drawbacks. It also typically requires high pressures and significant interconnected amounts of energy.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solutions-inspired-by-nature">Solutions inspired by nature</h2>



To avoid these problems, Rotta Loria and his team developed a new technique inspired by coral and mollusks. Seawater is naturally rich in ions and dissolved minerals, and when a mild electrical current (two to three volts) is applied, it triggers chemical reactions that convert some of these constituents into solid calcium carbonate, the same mineral that mollusks use to build their shells.&nbsp;



A slightly higher voltage (four volts) can convert these constituents into magnesium hydroxide and hydromagnesite, common minerals found in various stones.



When these minerals form in the presence of sand, they act like glue, binding the sand particles together. In lab tests, the process worked with all types of sands, from common silica and calcareous sands to iron sands, which are often found near volcanoes.



“After being treated, the sand looks like a rock,” Rotta Loria said. “It is still and solid, instead of granular and incohesive. The minerals themselves are much stronger than concrete, so the resulting sand could become as strong and solid as a sea wall.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-protection-for-coastlines-nbsp">Long-term protection for coastlines&nbsp;</h2>



The minerals form instantaneously once the current is applied, but longer electrical stimulation produces more substantial results. “We have noticed remarkable outcomes from just a few days of stimulations,” he added. “Then, the treated sand should stay in place, without needing further interventions.”



The treated sand is expected to maintain its durability for decades, providing long-term protection for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-erosion-is-picking-up-speed-across-the-arctic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coastlines</a>. The process is also eco-friendly and reversible. The mild voltages used in the process are harmless to sea life, and the process can be undone if necessary by switching the battery’s anode and cathode, which dissolves the minerals.



“The minerals form because we are locally raising the pH of the seawater around cathodic interfaces,” Rotta Loria explained. “If you switch the anode with the cathode, then localized reductions in pH are involved, which dissolve the previously precipitated minerals.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-cost-more-protection-nbsp">Less cost, more protection&nbsp;</h2>



This method offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional erosion control methods. Rotta Loria’s team estimates that their process costs just $3 to $6 per cubic meter of electrically cemented ground, compared to up to $70 for similar methods that use binders.



This approach also shows promise for repairing cracked structures made of reinforced concrete, commonly found in existing shoreside infrastructure that is deteriorating due to sea-level rise, sand erosion, and extreme weather. A single pulse of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-generate-electricity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electricity</a> could heal potentially destructive cracks without the need to rebuild the entire structure.



“The applications of this approach are countless. We can use it to strengthen the seabed beneath sea walls or stabilize sand dunes and retain unstable soil slopes. We could also use it to strengthen protection structures, marine foundations, and so many other things. There are many ways to apply this to protect coastal areas,” Rotta Loria concluded.

When we think of forests, several incredible benefits may spring to mind. Forests offset greenhouse gas emissions through their natural carbon storage capacity. They provide habitats for wildlife, increase biodiversity, and offer unparalleled recreational opportunities. 



In Michigan, forests serve as a vital economic engine that contributed over $26 billion to the state's economy in 2022. 



And now, researchers at Michigan State University are highlighting an invisible standout benefit: these woodlands play an instrumental role in supplying and sanitizing our drinking water.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unearthing-the-forest-water-nexus">Unearthing the forest-water nexus</h2>



The study was led by Emily Huff, an associate professor in the <a href="https://seas.umich.edu/academics/courses/forest-ecology-and-management" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U-M Department of Forestry</a>, and colleagues Asia Dowtin, Emily Huizenga, and Jo Latimore.



"Billions of people around the world rely on forests to filter and provide clean drinking water," noted the researchers.



"The immense value of drinking water can be a strong rationale for conserving and sustainably managing forests, however, people are often unaware of this forest ecosystem service of providing clean drinking water which can lead to the service’s degradation."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



The team set out to investigate how stakeholders perceive woodlands' ability to provide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/over-4-4-billion-people-lack-access-to-safe-drinking-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clean drinking water</a>.



Stakeholders in this study were categorized into seven groups: water consumers, water utility providers, forest landowners, industry partners, policymakers, local governments, and nonprofit organizations. 



“Generally speaking, most people understood that where there are forests, there’s cleaner and more abundant water. However, they didn’t make the functional link that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-of-forests-2024-new-solutions-for-a-better-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conserving forests</a> results in cleaner drinking water," explained Huff.



This oversight arises due to a lack of awareness about the origin of household drinking water and the significant contribution of woodlands to its cleanliness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecological-link-between-forests-and-clean-water">Ecological link between forests and clean water</h2>



“The conclusion we came to for why this is, is partly because Michigan is varied when it relates to where water comes from and flows to throughout different watersheds. There’s a huge focus on overall Great Lakes water quality, but maybe less so specifically on drinking water,” said Huff.



Despite the fact that over 150 million people in the U.S. depend on woodlands to filter their drinking water, many remain oblivious to this ecological connection.



In Michigan specifically, 56% of residents rely on surface water for drinking, while the remaining 44% use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-has-a-vital-role-in-ecosystem-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater</a>, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.



The state's vast woodland coverage, therefore, plays an integral role in ensuring the availability and purity of its water supply.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forests-nature-s-water-filtration-system">Forests: Nature’s water filtration system</h2>



Forests act as a natural filtration system, safeguarding our water in several ways. Their leafy canopies buffer the impact of heavy rain on the forest floor, reducing erosion and thereby limiting the pollution of nearby bodies of water.



As rainwater permeates the soil and becomes groundwater, the forest roots absorb nutrients and filter it further.



“In 2016, we were only a couple years removed from the beginning of the Flint <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tackling-the-worlds-climate-driven-water-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water crisis</a> when drinking water was a crisis in Michigan and something we needed to pay more attention to," said Mike Smalligan, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) forest stewardship coordinator.



Smalligan said he wanted forests and the Michigan DNR to be more relevant to a conversation about drinking water. An initiative called “Forest to Mi Faucet” was created to explain how forests in Michigan protect drinking water.



Forest to Mi Faucet also helps find ways to lower water treatment costs for communities through forest filtration, teaches landowners how to responsibly manage woodlands, and promotes strategic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planting-too-many-trees-could-spoil-the-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree planting</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-awareness-action-and-conservation">Awareness, action, and conservation</h2>



"Healthy forests protect clean drinking water, and healthy forests are sometimes actively managed for forest products," said Huff. 



"There are ways to log forests that are sensitive to water quality and quantity, and at the end of the day, having forests where they are far surpasses any other land use when it comes to water quality and quantity.”



Looking forward, Huff and her team see an opportunity to create a market compensating landowners and forest managers for the water-based ecosystem services their woodlands provide. 



“That would essentially mean that money moves from the consumer or utility provider upstream to the forest landowner or manager so that forests are protected via a system where the beneficiaries - the consumers of water - pay forest landowners or managers to keep their lands as forests,” Huff explained.



The study is published in the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1752-1688.13002" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of American Water Resources Association</a>.

Energy companies employ persistent and personalized pressure tactics to persuade landowners to permit hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on their properties when signing oil and gas leases.



Even when landowners decline, these companies often use legalized compulsion to proceed with fracking, according to a new study.



“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-fracking-linked-to-mysterious-gentle-tremors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hydraulic fracturing</a> is a controversial issue, but a lot of the controversy has been focused on the big-picture consequences, for the climate and the economy,” said Benjamin Farrer, the study’s lead author and a former PhD student at <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a>.



“One of our hopes for this paper is that it will encourage policymakers to pay more attention to the individual experiences of the people who are closest to the issue.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compulsory-unitization-in-fracking">Compulsory unitization in fracking</h2>



Led by researchers at Binghamton University, <a href="https://www.suny.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State University of New York</a>, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (<a href="https://www.unlv.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNLV</a>), the study uncovered various types of shady and unsavory practices employed by oil and gas companies against landowners.



Because many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-fuel-extraction-must-be-stopped-to-limit-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuel</a> reservoirs in the United States are located under private land, energy companies must negotiate with landowners, offering compensation for access to the minerals beneath their properties. 



However, a well is only economically viable if it can drain a large spatial area, which requires pooling multiple mineral claims into a single working contract. 



Landowners may hold out for various reasons, including concerns about health risks, financial dissatisfaction, or simple unavailability.



This is where compulsory unitization comes into play. In many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oil-and-gas-production-linked-to-77-billion-in-annual-health-care-costs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oil- and gas</a>-producing states, this law permits companies to compel remaining landowners to join a drilling project if a certain percentage of the land atop a reservoir has already been leased. 



For instance, if 65% of the landowners on top of a gas deposit have given permission, the remaining 35% can be legally compelled to comply.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vertical-and-horizontal-drilling">Vertical and horizontal drilling</h2>



“Under conventional vertical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biden-policy-aims-to-block-arctic-oil-drilling-for-conservation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drilling</a>, the use of compulsion generally was a net positive for mineral owners -- it prevented holdouts looking for better contract terms from tanking a project, and it allowed small properties or properties along the border of a drilling area to force themselves into a contract if the drilling company tried to shut them out,” explained Robert Holahan, associate professor of political science at Binghamton University and co-author of the study.



“Under fracking, though, where the drilling happens horizontally under multiple properties, compulsory unitization can force mineral owners who otherwise don't want to lease their property to do so.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fracking-practices-on-ohio-landowners">Fracking practices on Ohio landowners</h2>



The research team, which included Holahan, Farrer, and former Binghamton students Kellyanne Allen and Tara Riggs, analyzed data from Ohio, a state that experienced a fracking boom in the 2010s.



They obtained the full database from Ohio’s <a href="https://ohiodnr.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Natural Resources</a>, covering compulsory unitization applications from January 2014 to April 2021.



The team reviewed a random sample of 37 applications, which documented each time a landowner was contacted about leasing, including the method, date, and outcome of the contact.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-examples-of-fracking-pressures-on-landowners">Examples of fracking pressures on landowners</h2>



In one notable case, a landowner opposed to signing a lease was persistently pursued by a company representative, or “landman.” 



Despite the landowner’s refusal to engage, the landman continued to call, send letters, and even visit her home. When the landowner did not answer the door, the landman spoke with her neighbors and family members.



In another case, a landman contacted a landowner undergoing radiation treatment at a hospital. The landowner expressed interest in discussing the lease after returning home, yet the landman continued to press the matter while the landowner was still hospitalized.



“Overall, we find widespread use of personalized tactics like phone calls and visits, as well as evidence that these tactics are used persistently, as landmen make multiple attempts over multiple months to contact landowners. We also find that many negotiations end in compulsion rather than in consent,” the researchers noted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-energy-policy">Broader implications for energy policy</h2>



The study’s findings indicate that compulsory unitization is being utilized not only with economic holdouts and unreachable landowners but also with various types of landowners, underscoring the widespread use of these pressure tactics.



“Legal instruments, like compulsory unitization or pooling, are often designed to solve one type of problem (ensuring all mineral owners get a fair share of revenues from an oil or gas well), but eventually can be used for other purposes (forcing mineral owners to lease their rights),” said Holahan. 



“Effective resource policy requires a continuous updating of the law as technologies change.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research-and-future-studies">Ongoing research and future studies</h2>



The research team is conducting a follow-up survey with individuals whose conversation records were analyzed in the study to verify the accuracy of their findings. 



Additionally, Holahan and his colleagues have surveyed 3,000 residents in the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania to gauge opinions on drilling and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wind-turbines-are-displacing-bats-from-their-forest-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wind turbines</a>, aiming to better understand how, or if, 'green energy' is viewed differently from 'conventional energy' among property owners.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-024-01601-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural Energy</a>.

When that puzzle is vibrant and diverse, filled with different landscapes and habitats and rich in biodiversity, it's more stable, more resilient, and bursting at the seams with life.



It's a thrilling discovery, one that challenges us to rethink how we approach conservation efforts and manage our landscapes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-landscape-habitats-and-biodiversity">Landscape habitats and biodiversity</h2>



The <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, a leading hub of research and innovation, has pulled back the curtain on this dynamic world in an exciting new study led by ecologists.



Their findings bring insightful answers to critical questions on conservation and land management. It even shines a light, bright and compelling, on how food chains operate across multiple habitats.



The study was conducted across 30 field sites in the Southwest UK, offering a sweeping, panoramic look at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-biodiversity-wildlife-habitats-delicate-balancing-act/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">varied habitats</a> across the landscape. What the researchers discovered was, to use a colloquial term, pretty awesome.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-variety-is-the-spice-of-life">Variety is the spice of life</h2>



You know the old saying, “variety is the spice of life”? Well, it turns out, it holds true for our habitats as well. 



The study unearthed significant differences in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbial-awakening-arctic-food-webs-are-transforming-from-green-to-brown/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food web structures</a> among landscapes with one, two, or three habitats. The more varied the habitat, the more diverse the species and the more evenly distributed they were.



A landscape peppered with multiple habitats is like a party hosting a bigger crowd, including those who are seasoned party-goers and know how to mix up the fun, leading to a more spirited, vibrant environment. 



In our case, habitat specialists, the ones particular about the party they attend, perk up when they see a multi-habitat landscape, leading to a dramatic increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-monitor-biodiversity-through-animal-sounds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overall biodiversity</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-landscapes-and-habitats">Biodiversity, landscapes, and habitats</h2>



“Conservation and restoration projects increasingly focus on landscape-scale efforts, however, data on species interactions are often limited to specific habitats, such as woodlands, farmland or urban areas,” explained lead author <a href="https://www.biology.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-talya-hackett" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr Talya Hackett</a>, who ran the project from Bristol’s <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Biological Sciences</a> and is currently at <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>.  



But landscapes with varied environments displayed a different picture. They showed a tougher resistance to species loss. 



In other words, despite life's ups and downs, they tend to bounce back quickly. Besides, a higher variety of habitats also led to better pollination services, a boon for our environment that depends heavily on this critical natural process.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multiplication-not-addition">Multiplication, not addition</h2>



But the multiple habitats did more than just attract a larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-shaped-plant-biodiversity-for-thousands-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">number of species</a> or provide better pollination. They brought something unique to the table.



If we think of each habitat as a piece of a puzzle, then the complete picture -- the landscape wasn’t merely an addition of these pieces, it was something more.



It showcased properties, like increased buffering against species loss and improved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hornets-are-the-most-important-pollinators-for-some-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollination</a>, that you can't predict from looking at individual habitats.



That's what Professor Jane Memmott, the project leader and co-lead author emphasized.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-conservation-strategies">Shift in conservation strategies</h2>



These findings have profound implications for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation strategies</a>. Historically, our efforts have centered around specific habitats, such as prairie restoration, wetland creation, or connecting similar ecosystems. 



However, the latest research highlights the necessity of a broader approach. To effectively boost biodiversity conservation, we must prioritize preserving landscapes that encompass multiple habitats. 



This holistic view recognizes the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how they support a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-fill-a-150-year-gap-in-biodiversity-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wide variety of species</a>. 



By maintaining diverse landscapes, we can create resilient environments that thrive amidst changing conditions. 



This shift in strategy is vital for ensuring the survival of countless species and promoting overall ecosystem health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-is-bright">Future is bright</h2>



The Bristol team plans to dive deeper into the effects of various habitat combinations and their compatibility.



They also aim to explore other ecological functions -- such as seed dispersal and decomposition -- in multi-habitat landscapes. 



These studies could very well revolutionize agricultural practices, possibly boosting food production and pest control, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maintaining ecosystem health</a>.



“Mobile species effectively glue the various <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-know-far-less-about-four-footed-animals-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitats</a> together, underscoring the intricate connections that sustain biodiversity and ecosystem services,” concluded Professor Memmott.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-07825-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a>.

Picture this: You're standing on the outskirts of Evia, Greece, your heart pounding as you watch a raging wildfire engulf a once lush forest. This is not an apocalyptic movie scene; it's our reality in the age of climate change. A new report from leading experts hints at an even harsher reality: we are relying too much on climate solutions that may not even be feasible.



We are now facing the fallout of dangerous climate change as the world continues to warm. And the belief that we can overshoot our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a> targets and then roll back the damage through future technology is nothing short of a risky gamble, according to the experts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-solutions-science-fact-or-fiction">Climate solutions: Science fact or fiction?</h2>



This study was carried out by three renowned researchers - Dr. James Dyke from the Global Systems Institute at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>, Professor Sir Robert Watson, Emeritus Professor in Environmental Sciences at the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of East Anglia</a> and previous chair of the IPCC and IPBES, and Dr. Wolfgang Knorr of <a href="https://www.lunduniversity.lu.se" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lund University</a>. 



In their report, they warn that the proposed solutions to our climate crisis might be based more on science fiction than science fact.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-false-promises-and-surreal-pledges">False promises and surreal pledges</h2>



World leaders made a commitment during the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels and "well below" 2 °C. Fast forward to today, and these pledges seem almost "surreal" as we continue to produce fossil fuels and break greenhouse gas emission records.



"Like the proverbial frog in the heating pan of water, we refuse to respond to the climate and ecological crisis with any sense of urgency,” said Dr. Dyke.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-circumventing-the-best-climate-solutions">Circumventing the best climate solutions </h2>



So, what's the solution? Dr. Dyke spells it out for us: we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions rapidly from all sectors while boosting energy efficiency.



However, the current policies and pledges seem to be circumventing this straightforward solution. They suggest that we can keep warming the planet, past any amount of climate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperatures-increase-scientists-plan-slow-down-rising-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">change</a>, and then use future technology to pull us back from the brink.



This, according to our experts, is a dangerous path that not only annihilates any attempt to limit warming to 1.5°C but also dumps the responsibility of fixing our planet on future generations. It hinges on carbon dioxide removal systems and geoengineering solutions that largely exist only on paper.



“The situation demands honesty, and a change of course,” said Professor Watson. Our policies need to be rooted in real-world science and engineering, focused on present-day actions instead of uncertain future technologies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-real-and-hard-truth">Real and hard truth</h2>



While the idea of overshooting our targets and then deploying carbon removal technology might sound tempting, there is a huge flaw in this plan – it overlooks the immense suffering that will be endured while we wait for this recovery. 



As Dr. Knorr points out, promises of net zero and recovery from overshoots are holding us back. They create a false sense of security that nothing too drastic needs to change right now.



The authors put forth four straightforward suggestions:



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Leave it where it is: It's time to cease funding new oil and gas projects and prioritize renewable energy sources. By leaving fossil fuels in the ground, we can combat climate change and promote a sustainable future for generations to come.</li>



<li>Immediate action over future promises: The climate crisis demands immediate action. We cannot promise to balance our carbon budgets decades from now.</li>



<li>In real science we trust: Our climate change policies need to be rooted in credible science and engineering. We cannot gamble our future on speculative carbon-removal approaches.</li>



<li>Get real: The ideas of net zero and overshoots should not be used to argue that our energy-intensive society doesn't need to change.</li>
</ol>



The truth is difficult to swallow. But acknowledging it could be our first step toward making a real difference. 



"Owning up to the failures of climate change <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-have-a-surprising-impact-on-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">policy</a> doesn’t mean giving up. It means accepting the consequences of past failures and not making the same mistakes," said the researchers. "Rather than hoping future generations can undo the damage, we must act now to protect the planet."

Overshooting climate targets and relying on future solutions is a risky gamble

The Atlantic Ocean is experiencing unprecedented warming, with waters off Florida resembling a hot tub, causing bleaching of the world's third-largest barrier reef. Similarly, extreme heat off Ireland’s coast has been linked to the mass death of seabirds. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-trend-in-the-atlantic-ocean">Warming trend in the Atlantic Ocean</h2>



Historically, the North Atlantic warmed more slowly than other global regions, but it has now not only caught up but surpassed previous records.&nbsp;



Last month, the sea surface temperature there surged to a record 25°C - nearly 1°C higher than the previous record set in 2020 - and the temperatures are expected to rise even further. “This year it’s been crazy,” said Tianle Yuan, an atmospheric physicist at NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a>.



The primary cause of this alarming trend is the increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a> from human activities, which trap heat that the oceans gradually absorb.&nbsp;



Additionally, recent weather patterns, especially stationary high-pressure systems that prevent cloud formation, have allowed the oceans to absorb more sunlight, intensifying the warming.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-lying-clouds-called-ship-tracks">Low-lying clouds called ship tracks</h2>



Researchers have also identified another contributing factor, which can be seen as an unintended consequence: the reduction of clouds known as ship tracks.&nbsp;



Regulations implemented in 2020 by the <a href="https://www.imo.org/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">United Nations International Maritime Organization</a> (IMO) significantly reduced sulfur pollution from ships by over 80%, improving air quality globally. 



However, this reduction has also diminished the formation of low-lying, reflective clouds that follow in ships' wakes and play a crucial role in cooling the planet. 



“The 2020 IMO rule ‘is a big natural experiment,’” said Duncan Watson-Parris, an atmospheric physicist at the <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scripps Institution of Oceanography</a>. “We’re changing the clouds.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-effects-of-human-activities">Warming effects of human activities</h2>



Studies have shown that by drastically reducing the number of ship tracks, the planet has warmed at a faster rate, particularly in the Atlantic, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dramatic-increase-in-shipping-traffic-threatens-marine-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maritime traffic</a> is dense.&nbsp;



In these shipping corridors, the reduced cloud cover has enhanced the warming effect of human carbon emissions by 50 percent. Michael Diamond, an atmospheric scientist at <a href="https://www.fsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida State University</a>, compared the impact to the loss of the cooling effect equivalent to that of a significant volcanic eruption each year.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geoengineering-experiment-gone-wrong-nbsp">Geoengineering experiment gone wrong&nbsp;</h2>



This natural experiment created by the IMO rules offers climate scientists a rare opportunity to study a geoengineering scenario - though it's one that’s unfortunately working in the wrong direction.&nbsp;



One such proposed strategy to mitigate global warming, called marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cloud-engineering-can-temporarily-cool-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cloud</a> brightening, involves ships spraying salt particles into the air to make clouds more reflective.&nbsp;



According to Diamond, the sharp decline in ship tracks demonstrates that humanity could, in theory, significantly cool the planet by brightening clouds. “It suggests pretty strongly that if you wanted to do it on purpose, you could,” he said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-in-the-atlantic-and-beyond">Warming in the Atlantic and beyond</h2>



The influence of pollution on clouds remains one of the largest uncertainties in predicting the rate of global warming, according to Franziska Glassmeier, an atmospheric scientist at the <a href="https://www.tudelft.nl/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Delft University of Technology</a>. Progress in understanding these complex interactions has been slow because “clouds are so variable,” she explained.



Some basic principles are well understood: particles like sulfate or salt can seed clouds by providing nuclei around which water vapor condenses into droplets. These seeds also brighten clouds by increasing the number of smaller droplets. However, the effects don't stop there, according to Robert Wood, an atmospheric scientist at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>.&nbsp;



Smaller droplets are less likely to merge, potentially reducing rainfall, which could enlarge clouds and further increase their reflectivity. However, larger clouds may mix with dry air, which could decrease their brightness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ship-tracks-decreased-by-more-than-50-percent-nbsp">Ship tracks decreased by more than 50 percent&nbsp;</h2>



Even before the IMO regulations, ship tracks were a focus for testing these ideas. With their striking visual appearance, these linear clouds were prime candidates for artificial intelligence-based image recognition.&nbsp;



By employing such techniques and analyzing 20 years of calibrated imagery from NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites, Yuan and his colleagues identified ten times more ship tracks than had previously been documented manually.&nbsp;



The study, published last year in <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abn7988" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a>, revealed that ship tracks in major shipping corridors decreased by more than 50% after the IMO regulations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extent-of-warming-in-the-north-atlantic-nbsp">Extent of warming in the North Atlantic&nbsp;</h2>



In subsequent research, Yuan's team took this analysis further, calculating the cooling effect associated with the brightening of these clouds and the pollution’s impact on cloud longevity.&nbsp;



The researchers concluded that the IMO rules have caused a warming of 0.1 watts per square meter - double the warming impact caused by changes to clouds from airplanes, as detailed in a paper currently under review.&nbsp;



This impact is especially pronounced in heavily trafficked areas like the North Atlantic, where the disappearance of clouds is a “shock to the system,” according to Yuan. The increase in sunlight, exacerbated by a lack of reflective <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saharan-dust-can-intensify-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saharan dust</a> over the ocean this year, “can account for most of the warming observed” in the Atlantic this summer.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollution-cools-the-climate">Air pollution cools the climate</h2>



Watson-Parris and his colleagues approached the problem differently, starting with ship location data and combining it with weather records to project where ship pollution traveled.&nbsp;



The experts compared clouds at these locations with nearby clouds unaffected by ship pollution. In <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05122-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a> last year, they reported that these “invisible” ship tracks not only enhanced low-lying marine clouds but also significantly increased the volume of higher-altitude cumulus clouds, which were previously thought to be unaffected by ship pollution.&nbsp;



The findings suggested that air pollution could be causing clouds to cool the climate at nearly twice the previously estimated strength.



However, their follow-up study on the effect of the IMO rules on these invisible tracks delivered a surprise: the reduction in pollution did not reduce the puffiness of the cumulus clouds, according to a new preprint in the journal <a href="https://egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2023/egusphere-2023-813/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics</a> (ACP). This suggests that these clouds have a saturation point, beyond which additional pollution has little effect on their development.&nbsp;



“We removed 80% of the aerosols, but that’s still not taking us close to the preindustrial state,” Watson-Parris said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-ship-pollution-on-clouds-nbsp">Impact of ship pollution on clouds&nbsp;</h2>



Another approach to understanding the impact of ship pollution on clouds involves zooming in on specific ocean regions where winds align with shipping lanes, concentrating the pollution.&nbsp;



One such region is off the coast of Angola in the southeast Atlantic. Observing this area with the Terra satellite, Diamond found that with reduced pollution, cloud droplet sizes had increased to their largest in two decades.&nbsp;



Based on these findings, Diamond estimates in a recent paper in <a href="https://acp.copernicus.org/articles/23/8259/2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACP</a> that the IMO rules have caused warming globally at levels comparable to those observed by Yuan.



Later this year, Diamond, Yuan, and other researchers will begin comparing their methods for studying the interaction of pollution and clouds under the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>’s small geoengineering research program. “After a few more years, we’re really going to have something to say about these cloud adjustments,” Wood concluded.

What once stood as a shield against the harsh impacts of climate change, Africa's montane forests, are under threat. The latest danger to these forests involves a largely unknown consequence of deforestation: cloud level rise.



Known for their spectacular biodiversity and water-trapping properties, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loss-of-mountain-forests-accelerating-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">montane forests</a> are lifelines for millions of people in Africa.



In an era where climate change is a reality, these forests are sadly diminishing at an alarming rate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disappearing-forests-and-cloud-level-rise">Disappearing forests and cloud level rise</h2>



In the span of just two decades, a staggering 18% of these "water towers" have disappeared due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-deforestation-crisis-how-can-we-stop-massive-forest-losses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deforestation</a>.



The impact? A two-fold increase in warming and cloud-level rise compared to that caused by climate change.



The air temperature has spiked by 1.4 centigrade, and the cloud level has ascended by a startling 230 meters in the past 20 years.



Professor Dirk Zeuss of the <a href="https://www.uni-marburg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Marburg</a> noted that these changes have strong consequences for water resources and biodiversity. But what exactly does this mean?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-cloud-level-rise">Consequences of cloud level rise</h2>



As the cloud level ascends, water harvesting takes a significant hit. Clouds, when they touch the forest canopy, deposit fog (water) onto the plant and land surfaces. This natural phenomenon, however, becomes obsolete if the cloud base is higher than the forest canopy.



It is crucial for mountaintops to have ample forest cover - not only to augment the surface area of the land cover - but also to increase water storage in trees and soil.



The study sites were located in the highlands of Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Africa, including the Taita Hills of Kenya. 



According to Professor Petri Pellikka, director of Taita Research Station, the team found that 20% more water was landing on the ground in forested mountain tops compared to open areas. 



"This is due to fog deposited on the trees, which drips on the ground as droplets. This is additional to the rainfall. If the clouds remain higher and do not touch the forests, this phenomenon does not take place anymore," said Pellikka.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-the-forests-fade-so-does-life">When the forests fade, so does life</h2>



It’s not just the Taita Hills where deforestation has wreaked havoc. Kenya's most critical water towers - Mt. Kenya, the Mau Forest, the Aberdare Mountains, Mt. Elgon, the Cherangani Hills, and even Mt. Kilimanjaro - are all bearing the brunt of deforestation.



Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain located in Tanzania, is a prime example. This mountain has seen a striking loss of 50% of its forest since 1880, according to Dr. Andreas Hemp from the University of Bayreuth, who has spent three decades researching in Kilimanjaro.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-and-elevation">Temperature and elevation</h2>



Deforestation has far-reaching impacts. As the study reveals, the negative relationship between temperature and elevation means the impacts of warming due to deforestation can decrease with increasing elevation.



However, mass deforestation can counteract this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-measures-the-cooling-effect-of-shade-in-urban-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cooling effect</a>, causing comparable warming at higher elevations in African montane forests. This adds another layer of complexity to the crisis.



Temesgen Abera is a visiting scholar from the <a href="https://www.helsinki.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Helsinki</a> and a postdoctoral researcher at Philipps University of Marburg, 



"In Africa, montane deforestation induced by cropland expansion and logging poses serious threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as water supply," said Abera.

The movement of these molten metals in the outer core generates Earth's magnetic field through a process known as the geodynamo.

Spanning approximately 1,220 kilometers in radius -- about the size of the Moon -- this inner core grows slowly as the Earth cools over time. It, too, plays a role in generating Earth’s magnetic field, although scientists are still uncovering the details of its influence.



Together, these two cores form the heart of our planet, driving many processes that sustain life on Earth. As we explore these layers, we can appreciate the complexity and wonder of our planet's inner workings. Isn’t it intriguing to think about how such dynamics impact our daily lives?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-the-long-lost-ocean">Discovering the long-lost ocean</h2>



Imagine the Earth's beefy crust as a colossal jigsaw puzzle of tectonic plates moving, colliding, and sinking into the belly of our planet. 



Over the years, some of these submerged plates -- once remnants of the ocean floor -- settled at the core-mantle boundary, forming what scientists have now recognized as an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ). 



Albeit only tens of kilometers thick, this ULVZ layer is significantly denser than the surrounding mantle.



"As seismic investigators," Dr. Hansen explains, "Our work is like a high-resolution snapshot of the Earth's inner structure, and boy, is it more complex than we ever thought!"



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-core-mantle-boundary">Earth's core-mantle boundary</h2>



The peculiar activity at the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-breaking-hole-drilled-into-earths-mantle-scientific-goldmine-magma-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">core-mantle boundary</a> has baffled scientists for decades. Seismic waves, the audacious trespassers they are, slow to a crawl upon hitting this region. 



However, the breadth and intricacy of these zones remained elusive until Dr. Edward Garnero, a geophysicist at <a href="https://www.asu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arizona State University</a>, and his team analyzed a whopping number of seismic recordings from Antarctica.



This high-definition imaging led to a staggering discovery: gigantic 'mountains' at the core, some towering up to five times the height of Mount Everest. 



Mind you, these aren't your garden-variety mountains. They're clusters of ancient oceanic crust compacted and densified over the ages. This dense material slows down passing seismic waves, hence the term 'ultra-low velocity zone.'

What does this mean for our understanding of the Earth? While the immediate thought of a wildfire might bring to mind the devastation of homes, landscapes, and lives, there exists a lesser-known narrative about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-ultimately-benefit-plant-and-animal-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">positive impacts</a> of certain types of wildfires. According to research from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, low-severity wildfires play a crucial role in protecting our forests.



These milder fires, unlike their more destructive counterparts, can act as nature's own defense mechanism, reducing the intensity and spread of future wildfires.

The study not only highlights the immediate benefits of these fires but also emphasizes how their effects can persist, continuing to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-an-unexpected-ally-in-forest-regeneration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">protect forests</a> even as environmental conditions evolve.



Climate change is leading to more frequent and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-wildfires-have-doubled-in-the-last-20-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intense wildfires</a>, making the findings of this research particularly relevant for future forest management strategies.



"We’re living in a time with increasing wildfire, which poses challenges for our communities and landscapes," noted Tortorelli.

The findings reveal that forests along the California coast and Southwest exhibit longer-lasting resilience than those in the Sierra and Cascades.

The study shows that the benefits of these low-severity fires are not uniform but are instead shaped by the unique characteristics of each forest. "It’s all about the vegetation and fuels that are coming back after fire," said Tortorelli.



The research highlights the importance of local conditions in determining how effective initial fires are in reducing the severity of future fires.



The reduced severity could last up to 20 years in some systems, but the effect diminishes over time, requiring follow-up treatments such as prescribed burns or mechanical thinning to prolong the benefits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-forest-management">Implications for forest management</h2>



The findings could play a key role in helping land managers decide where to focus risk reduction efforts while adapting to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-attribute-extreme-heat-and-wildfires-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changing climate</a>.



The researchers also found that even in areas experiencing high-severity wildfires, there are often zones that burn with low to moderate severity.



Study co-author Andrew Latimer is a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis.



"It opens this window of opportunity to keep forests in good shape," said Latimer, emphasizing the widespread impact of low-severity fires as a significant form of fuel reduction.

An invisible enemy is gradually threatening the health of our water, our planet, and all of its residents -- one that many of us may not even be aware of: nanoplastics.



Far tinier than an average human hair, these minuscule plastics are far too small for the naked eye to detect. 



Alarmingly, they have been linked to various cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and are accumulating steadily in our water sources.



Here lies the crux of the fight against nanoplastics. A cost-effective, efficient solution is needed to remove these almost invisible particles from water while leaving it clean.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-removing-nanoplastics-from-water">Removing nanoplastics from water</h2>



The <a href="https://missouri.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Missouri</a>, recognized as Mizzou, is making significant strides in this battle. A team of researchers there recently developed a liquid-based solution with unprecedented efficiency. 



This innovative method eliminates more than 98% of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-in-oceans-often-go-undetected-due-to-their-tiny-size/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiny plastic</a> particles, offering promising new possibilities for water purification.



One of the team members, Piyuni Ishtaweera, said, "Nanoplastics can disrupt <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-pollution-found-in-every-aquatic-species-tested/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aquatic ecosystems</a> and enter the food chain, posing risks to both wildlife and humans. In layman's terms, we're developing better ways to remove contaminants such as nanoplastics from water."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wonder-of-the-liquid-solution">Wonder of the liquid solution</h2>



Unlike conventional methods, this new approach uses water-repelling solvents made from natural ingredients. 



These solvents designed by the scientists themselves, act like plastic magnets, absorbing the nanoplastics from a significant volume of water.



Initially, the solvent sits on the water's surface the way oil floats on water. Once the solvent is mixed with the water and then separated again, it floats back to the surface, but now carrying the nanoplastics within its molecular structure.



In the laboratory, the execution is straightforward: the nanoplastic-laden solvent is simply removed using a pipette, leaving behind clean, plastic-free water.



"We aim to determine the maximum capacity of the solvent," said Gary Baker, an associate professor in Mizzou's Department of Chemistry and the study's corresponding author. "Additionally, we will explore methods to recycle the solvents, enabling their reuse multiple times if necessary."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nanoplastics-and-water-contamination">Nanoplastics and water contamination</h2>



Notably, this new method works with both fresh and saltwater, showing its universal applicability.



Moreover, because these solvents are manufactured from safe, non-toxic components that repel water, they prevent further <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-drinking-water-often-contains-unsafe-levels-of-toxic-contaminants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contamination of water</a> sources.



The capability to deal with diverse water sources reflects the high sustainability of this solution. 



"From a scientific perspective, creating effective removal methods fosters innovation in filtration technologies, provides insights into nanomaterial behavior, and supports the development of informed environmental policies," said Ishtaweera.



Their results tower over those of previous studies. The Mizzou team tested five different sizes of polystyrene-based nanoplastics, a common type of plastic used in the production of Styrofoam cups.



This contrasts with earlier work that only focused on a single size of plastic particles.



With this breakthrough, the researchers at the University of Missouri are on the vanguard of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-develop-an-eco-friendly-material-to-purify-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water purification</a> technology, heralding a more hopeful future in the fight against nanoplastic water contamination.

Imagine a summer evening with the California air charged with anticipation. It's August 16, 2024 at 20:56 CEST, and at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is set to lift off, carrying Europe's latest cubesat, Φsat-2 (PHsat-2). 



Much more than just another satellite, Φsat-2 marks a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthcare-satellite-will-reveal-the-climate-effects-of-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">revolutionary stride</a> in Earth observation, packed with advanced AI technology.



The project was led by Nicola Melega, <a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>'s Φsat-2 Technical Officer. 



"<a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Phsat-2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Φsat-2 mission</a> showcases how advanced AI technology can transform our ability to monitor and respond to changes on Earth, making space data more actionable and impactful than ever before,” shared Melega.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-satellite-in-the-sky">AI satellite in the sky</h2>



Unlike traditional satellites, Φsat-2 is like <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/ai-satellite_Phsat-2_launched_orbit_earth-observation_1big.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a super-smart detective</a>: it's designed to analyze and process imagery while in orbit. 



This is invaluable when it comes to quick decision-making for environmental protection, disaster response, and maritime monitoring, among other critical applications.



"This mission heralds a new era of actionable insights from space, promising smarter and more efficient ways of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-based-data-centers-could-transform-satellite-capabilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">monitoring our planet</a>,” said Simonetta Cheli, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-introducing-φsat-2-from-launch-to-orbit">Introducing Φsat-2: From launch to orbit</h2>



Φsat-2's journey to space began aboard a <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/falcon-9/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket</a>, integrated by Exolaunch. The cubesat safely entered into orbit and began sending back signals on the same night, received by the Svalbard ground station in Norway.



Zipping around Earth at an altitude of 510 km, Φsat-2 is equipped with a multispectral camera that can image Earth in seven different bands in the visible to near-infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-features-and-capabilities-of-the-ai-satellite">Features and capabilities of the AI satellite</h2>



Φsat-2 houses a set of extraordinary features, thanks to some outstanding AI apps that run on the 6U Cubesat platform, designed and developed by <a href="https://www.open-cosmos.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OpenCosmos</a>.



Being remotely operable from Earth, these apps revolutionize how we gather environmental data, setting a new benchmark in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soho-satellite-captures-massive-earth-solar-storm-video/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space-based</a> AI technology.



The satellite's applications range from cloud detection and street map generation to maritime vessel detection and on-board image compression and reconstruction.

For instance, one of the onboard apps developed by KP Labs, enables Φsat-2 to classify clouds and only transmit unobscured, usable images back to Earth.



Then there's Sat2Map application, developed by CGI, which transforms satellite imagery into street maps. This data proves invaluable during emergencies, allowing response teams to identify accessible roads during disasters such as floods or earthquakes.



And let's not forget the maritime vessel detection application, developed by CEiiA. By leveraging machine learning techniques, the app can detect and classify vessels in specified regions, aiding on-sea security measures.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-societal-impact-of-φsat-2-s-data">Societal impact of Φsat-2's data</h2>



As Φsat-2 orbits our planet, its advanced capabilities promise to usher in a new era of data-driven decision-making. 



By providing timely and precise information, the satellite can significantly enhance our response to natural disasters. 



For instance, through real-time imaging and analysis, emergency management teams will be better equipped to allocate resources and respond effectively in crisis situations.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pushing-boundaries">Pushing boundaries</h2>



To widen the scope of its functionalities and contributions, two more apps will be uploaded to Φsat-2 now that it's in orbit.



First, is the marine anomaly detection app by IRT Saint Exupery Technical Research. Like a hawk's eye over the ocean, this app spots abnormalities such as oil spills, harmful algae blooms and heavy sediment discharges.



Then there's the wildfire detection system by Thales Alenia Space. This tool provides real-time data to help firefighters locate wildfires, track fire spread and identify potential hazards.



With Φsat-2 in our skies, we've taken a giant leap in Earth observation and AI applications in space. But let's remember, this is just the beginning of a new era in actionable insights from space.

Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
