<p>During totality, which will last 82 minutes, only red light will filter through Earth’s atmosphere and reach the Moon. That’s what gives the lunar face its striking copper hue, earning the name “blood moon.”</p>



<p>Here in the United States, the eclipse will stay below the horizon. The wait won’t be long, though. According to <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, the next blood moon lunar eclipse will be visible from America on March 3, 2026.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-final-full-moon-of-summer">Final full moon of summer</h2>



<p>On Sunday, September 7, the Corn Moon will reach its peak illumination at 2:09 p.m. EDT. That moment takes place below the horizon for U.S. viewers, but the full moon will climb into the eastern sky, glowing bright and round by nightfall.</p>



<p>The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that the Moon will look nearly full on both the nights before and after September 7. For sky watchers, that means an extended window to catch a glimpse.</p>



<p>Near the horizon, the Moon may appear golden or orange for a while, but as it rises higher, the glow will shift to a clearer white.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-is-it-called-the-corn-moon">Why is it called the Corn Moon?</h2>



<p>The name Corn Moon traces back to the Algonquin tribes in the northeastern United States. </p>

<p>By contrast, the Corn Moon always comes in September. <p>At first glance, mangroves might appear as quiet coastal sentinels, swaying gently between land and sea. But beneath the surface, these tangled root systems harbor a world that is teeming with life. For centuries, coastal communities have fished and foraged in mangrove-rich waters, relying on their resources to survive.</p>



<p>Today, new research reveals the extent of that support. A global study led by Philine S. E. zu Ermgassen and colleagues from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a> offers one of the most detailed estimates yet of the role that mangroves play in sustaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-fish-species-are-the-big-catch-of-the-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a>.</p>



<p>The findings are staggering. Each year, mangroves nurture over 700 billion juvenile fish and invertebrates from commercially important species. These include prawns, finfish, crabs, and bivalves. </p>



<p>While this abundance doesn’t automatically translate into food on our plates, it highlights the irreplaceable role that mangroves play in ecological and economic systems worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mangroves-feed-fish-and-support-jobs">Mangroves feed fish and support jobs</h2>



<p>Food from oceans and coasts supplies essential nutrition to billions of people. The growing global population intensifies pressure on these systems. An estimated 260 million people currently earn a living from marine fisheries, and this livelihood is especially important in lower-income nations.</p>



<p>Fish stocks rely heavily on healthy ecosystems - mangroves included. When these environments deteriorate due to overfishing or habitat loss, the ripple effects reach dinner tables and job markets around the world.</p>



<p>Mangrove forests flourish in the intertidal zones of tropical and subtropical coasts. Their structure offers shelter and food to juvenile fish and shellfish. These nurseries are more than a convenience - they are an essential requirement for many species to survive their early life stages.</p>



<p>Small-scale and export-oriented fisheries alike benefit. Species such as crabs and shrimp fetch high market prices, especially in times of economic instability.</p>



<p>“While abundance at the early life-history stage does not directly equate to potential economic or biomass gains, this estimate indicates the critical role of mangroves globally in supporting fish and fisheries,” noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mangrove-life-across-the-globe">Mangrove life across the globe</h2>



<p>To reach these conclusions, the team compiled data on 37 commercially important <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/native-fish-species-are-facing-double-trouble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>. They included juvenile finfish, prawns, crabs, and a single bivalve species.</p>



<p>Data came from 481 field measurements spread across various geographies, though some regions, like West Africa, lacked sufficient information. To bridge the gaps, the researchers used the Delphi technique - an expert consensus method - to identify the ecological drivers of species density.</p>



<p>Twelve environmental variables shaped the predictive model. These included sea surface salinity, tidal amplitude, mangrove area, and net primary productivity. The model also factored in mangrove edge length and changes in forest extent. </p>



<p>Using global geospatial layers, researchers estimated species density across all known mangrove regions. This allowed them to visualize not just where mangroves exist, but where they produce the highest abundance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-evolve-rapidly-by-switching-between-simple-and-complex-teeth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life</a>.</p>



<p>Their findings revealed hotspots in Southeast and South Asia, the Red Sea, the Caribbean, and the northern coast of South America. Regions with deltaic mangroves - formed around river mouths - supported especially high densities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fish-and-crab-numbers-change-by-region">Fish and crab numbers change by region</h2>



<p>The study uncovered wide variations in abundance based on geography. Southeast Asia stood out, supporting nearly half of the global total. </p>



<p>Finfish and prawn numbers dominated in this region, with Indonesia alone producing 185 billion individuals annually. Countries like Myanmar, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea also ranked high.</p>



<p>In the Americas, the focus shifted to crabs. Two species -<em> Ucides cordatus</em> and <em>Ucides occidentalis</em> - showed high densities in Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. These crustaceans not only play ecological roles but also hold cultural and economic significance for coastal communities.</p>



<p>Three species of penaeid prawns, which rely heavily on mangrove nurseries, had the highest predicted densities in places like Pakistan, India, Myanmar, and Viet Nam.</p>



<p>In contrast, some areas like the Pacific coasts of the Americas featured fewer finfish but boasted dense populations of the bivalve <em>Anadara tuberculosa</em>. This species, which is tied closely to red mangrove root habitat, contributes heavily to regional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-eye-tracking-changes-what-we-know-about-swarm-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fisheries</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-mangroves-grow-more-fish-than-others">Some mangroves grow more fish than others</h2>



<p>Geomorphic settings - such as whether the mangroves are in a delta or on an open coast - significantly influence fish and invertebrate densities.</p>



<p>Deltaic mangroves, rich in nutrients and tidal activity, supported the greatest abundance. On the other hand, fragmented mangrove areas or those with long edge lengths sometimes showed reduced productivity, possibly due to habitat degradation.</p>



<p>“Hotspots of finfish density include the extensive mangrove coastline of Brazil to the east of the Amazon, the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela, as well as the deltaic and lagoonal Caribbean coasts of Colombia and Mexico,” stated the authors. </p>



<p>While some models showed positive links between edge length and catch sizes, this study found a negative correlation. Fragmented edges may not provide the same protective benefits for juveniles as continuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-pushing-freshwater-fish-toward-the-poles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitats</a> do. This suggests that mangrove quality - not just quantity - matters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fishers-rely-on-mangroves">Fishers rely on mangroves</h2>



<p>One of the most illuminating parts of the research was the comparison between fish abundance and fishing pressure. </p>



<p>Areas in South and Southeast Asia, such as the Mekong Delta, revealed strong overlaps. These regions host both high fish densities and large populations of small-scale fishers. In contrast, places like the northern Red Sea showed high productivity but low fisher numbers.</p>



<p>Some countries showed an inverse relationship. They had high numbers of fishers but lower estimated fish abundance. This mismatch could indicate overfishing or degraded habitats. Other areas, including parts of Australia and the Western Caribbean, supported recreational fisheries rather than subsistence or commercial ones.</p>



<p>This kind of data becomes vital for designing policies. It helps governments and conservation groups decide where interventions are most needed - be it through habitat restoration or fishery regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mangroves-boost-national-food-systems">Mangroves boost national food systems</h2>



<p>The study found a clear correlation between a country’s mangrove-related abundance and its total ocean-derived food production. </p>



<p>In countries like Indonesia and Brazil, mangroves significantly contribute to national food systems. But in nations with limited mangrove areas - like Japan or Peru - their share remains small despite high overall seafood output.</p>



<p>Mangroves supply more than just protein. They underpin local economies, support employment, and offer buffers against environmental crises. In island nations, up to 80% of species targeted by fisheries depend on mangroves during part of their life cycle. </p>



<p>“Despite their relatively small area, mangrove-associated fish and invertebrate species can contribute substantially to fisheries catches,” the experts noted in their paper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-losing-mangroves-means-losing-fish">Losing mangroves means losing fish</h2>



<p>The study emphasizes that mangroves must be treated as vital infrastructure for global food systems. While the 735 billion juvenile fish and invertebrates nurtured each year represents only a subset of all commercial species, it still showcases the immense productivity of these habitats.</p>



<p>If anything, this number is a conservative estimate, limited by data gaps in places like West Africa.</p>



<p>Areas with both high fishing pressure and low abundance signal urgent need for protective action. In contrast, regions with rich mangroves but low exploitation may offer opportunities for sustainable fisheries expansion. Knowing which is which allows better planning.</p>



<p>“Clearly, overall abundance of commercially important fish and invertebrate species is strongly influenced by overall mangrove extent,” the authors concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moving-forward-with-clarity">Moving forward with clarity</h2>



<p>The study bridges a long-standing gap in marine ecology. It doesn’t just describe what mangroves offer - it maps the benefits, models them, and links them directly to livelihoods. For policymakers, fishers, and conservationists, this is a crucial toolkit.</p>



<p>Protecting mangroves is more than just an environmental goal - it’s a necessity for maintaining food security and income in vulnerable regions.</p>



<p>With growing climate risks and population demands, mangrove forests must no longer be an afterthought. They are a living engine of resilience, quietly holding up a large part of the world’s coastal economies.</p>

This isn't just a passing concern. It’s a steady hum of anxiety that often grows louder with time. For some, it even disrupts daily life.</p>

Coping with eco-anxiety: Turning climate worry into action

The world is warming. With each new disaster, worry deepens....

<p>Planet Mercury is scorched and easy to overlook, yet the innermost planet keeps tossing cosmic curveballs. Now researchers suggest an even wilder twist: a layer of diamond roughly 10 miles thick may sit inside the planet. </p>



<p>For a world that spins three times on its axis for every two laps around the Sun and endures noon temperatures above 800 °F, that is a dazzling possibility.</p>



<p>Hints of carbon riches have been piling up since NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/messenger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MESSENGER spacecraft</a> mapped Mercury in detail. Graphite patches spattered across the crust - graphite, an “allotrope” of carbon - point to a bygone magma ocean loaded with carbon. </p>



<p>When that ocean cooled, light carbon floated upward, darkening the ground, while denser metal sank inward. </p>



<p>Heavier carbon, the new study argues, descended alongside the sinking metal and re‑crystallized into diamond, adding a fresh twist to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bepicolombo-spacecraft-captures-high-definition-images-of-mercury-during-close-flyby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the planet’s story</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recreating-mercury-diamonds-in-the-lab">Recreating Mercury diamonds in the lab</h2>



<p>The work comes from a joint team in China and Belgium led by planetary materials specialist Dr. Yanhao Lin of the Center for High Pressure Science and Technology Advanced Research (<a href="https://hpstar.ac.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HPSTAR</a>). </p>



<p>MESSENGER’s chemical readings showed more carbon than any other rocky world, so Lin’s group recreated Mercury’s interior in a lab press, squeezing synthetic mantle rock to 7 GPa, roughly seven times the pressure at the bottom of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sea-hydrothermal-vents-provide-clues-about-the-origin-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mariana Trench</a>, then heating it to nearly 3,600 °F.</p>



<p>“Many years ago, I noticed that Mercury's extremely high carbon content might have significant implications. It made me realize that something special probably happened within its interior.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mercury-s-core-mantle-boundary">Mercury's core–mantle boundary</h2>



<p>Under those conditions, graphite is not the only option. The experiments indicate that at the core-mantle boundary - about 5.575 GPa and enriched by roughly 11 percent sulfur - carbon flips into its harder sibling, building a sparkling shell up to 18 kilometers (11 miles) thick around the metallic core. </p>



<p>Cooling calculations show a 358 K drop in the magma ocean once diamond begins to appear, helping the crystals sink and pile up.</p>



<p>“We use the large‑volume press to mimic the high‑temperature and high‑pressure conditions of Mercury's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bepicolombo-mission-captures-mercury-in-unprecedented-detail/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">core‑mantle boundary</a> and combine it with the geophysical models and thermodynamic calculations,” Lin explained. </p>



<p>“Sulfur lowers the liquidus of Mercury's magma ocean. If the diamond forms in the magma ocean, it can sink to the bottom and be deposited at the CMB." </p>



<p>On the other hand, sulfur also helps the formation of an iron sulfide layer at the CMB, which is related to carbon content during planetary differentiation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sturdy-magnetic-field">Sturdy magnetic field</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bepicolombo-spacecraft-reveals-mercurys-magnetic-secrets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mercury’s magnetic field</a> is surprisingly sturdy for a world only slightly wider than the continental United States. Heat must flow out of the core to keep the dynamo churning, and diamond is an ace conductor that funnels energy upward faster than the surrounding rock.</p>



<p>“Carbon from the molten core becomes oversaturated as it cools, forming diamond and floating to the CMB," Lin continued.</p>



<p>"Diamond's high thermal conductivity helps transfer heat effectively from the core to the mantle, causing temperature stratification and convection change in Mercury's liquid outer core, and thus affecting the generation of its magnetic field."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-mercury-got-so-much-diamond">How Mercury got so much diamond</h2>



<p>Mercury’s graphite veneer - described as a “primordial crust” in MESSENGER papers - already set the planet apart. If diamond truly lurks below, it widens the chemical gulf between Mercury and other rocky worlds. </p>



<p>Earth, Mars, and Venus lost most of their carbon to space or locked it in carbonates; Mercury appears to have hoarded it, first as floating graphite, then as sinking diamond.</p>



<p>“It also could be relevant to the understanding of other terrestrial planets, especially those with similar sizes and compositions. The processes that led to the formation of a diamond layer on Mercury might also have occurred on other planets, potentially leaving similar signatures,” Lin concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>The discovery leans heavily on laboratory insight because no probe has yet peered inside Mercury. <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/BepiColombo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BepiColombo</a>, a joint European–Japanese mission cruising toward the planet, will slip into orbit in 2030. </p>



<p>Its instruments will refine gravity maps and look for twists in the magnetic field that betray a thin, superconductive layer. </p>



<p>A modestly thick diamond shell may leave a clear fingerprint that confirms or refutes the laboratory predictions.</p>



<p>Future researchers may also revisit carbon‑rich metallic asteroids. </p>



<p>If Mercury managed to forge diamond <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-mercury-is-still-shrinking-and-now-has-more-wrinkles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">under modest pressure</a>, smaller bodies could follow suit, spicing up asteroid‑mining dreams - even if any gems are locked beneath iron skins, not loose pebbles ripe for harvest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>The tale is not about jewelry; it is a lesson in planetary evolution. Carbon’s behavior - floating, sinking, switching structure - shapes heat flow, crust makeup, and even the shielding field that deflects solar wind.</p>



<p>By tracing carbon’s journey on Mercury, scientists sharpen models that apply to worlds circling distant stars. A planet baked dry and loaded with carbon might look lifeless at first glance, yet deep interiors could dance with diamond phases that keep cores alive. </p>



<p>Mercury, often written off as a scorched ball of rock, shows that worlds can host exotic physics, hiding secrets worth chasing.</p>

NASA spacecraft finds a layer of diamonds 10-miles thick on planet Mercury

<p>Every plant leaf, eagle feather, and speck of pond scum spell out existence with the same four DNA letters. Ribosomes read that code, snap together twenty familiar amino acids, and pay each cellular bill with the energy token ATP.</p>



<p>That sameness keeps biologists chasing one big puzzle: if the instructions are nearly identical everywhere, who wrote the first edition? </p>



<p>The answer points to LUCA - the Last Universal Common Ancestor - an organism that sat at the split between Bacteria and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-the-pressure-builds-archaea-go-multicellular/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archaea</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-one-genetic-code-one-single-ancestor">One genetic code, one single ancestor</h2>



<p>Living systems are not fond of coincidence. A single genetic alphabet, the same protein‑making machinery, and a universal energy currency add up to more than luck. </p>



<p>“The evolutionary history of genes is complicated by their exchange between lineages," explained Dr. Edmund Moody, lead author from the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>. His team sifted thousands of genomes to see how far back the shared toolkit stretches.</p>



<p>"We have to use complex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-model-esm3-creates-new-protein-that-simulates-500-million-years-of-biological-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary models</a> to reconcile the evolutionary history of genes with the genealogy of species.” </p>



<p>By letting the data, rather than strict cutoffs, decide which features belonged to LUCA, the researchers landed on roughly 2,600 genes - about as many as a run‑of‑the‑mill modern bacterium carries. </p>



<p>Co-author Dr. Tom Williams noted, “One of the real advantages here is applying the gene‑tree species‑tree reconciliation approach to such a diverse dataset representing the primary domains of life, Archaea and Bacteria. This allows us to say with some confidence - and assess that level of confidence - in how LUCA lived.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-luca-s-developmental-toolkit">LUCA's developmental toolkit</h2>



<p>Previous estimates swung from a lean 80‑gene outline to libraries topping 1,500 families. The updated theory paints LUCA as anything but a genetic ghost. </p>



<p>Inside those 2,600 blueprints are membrane pumps, DNA‑repair crews, and all the ingredients for simple lipids. Better still, the cache includes the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood%E2%80%93Ljungdahl_pathway" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wood–Ljungdahl pathway</a>, a tidy chemical loop that welds carbon dioxide to hydrogen, spits out acetate, and releases usable energy in the process.</p>



<p>Such provisions point to a self‑reliant cell thriving without outside help. That picture challenges older ideas that early life was a stripped‑down passenger riding geology’s coattails toward complexity. </p>



<p>Instead, LUCA seems to have been capable, adaptable, and ready to try new tricks the moment the planet cooled enough to keep liquid water in place.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemistry-of-hydrothermal-vents">Chemistry of hydrothermal vents</h2>



<p>Tracking gene changes throughout Earth's history, the study dates LUCA to about 4.2 billion years ago, only a few hundred million years after Earth itself pulled together. </p>



<p>“We did not expect LUCA to be so old, within just hundreds of millions of years of Earth formation. However, our results fit with modern views on the habitability of early Earth,” said <a href="https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/sandra-alvarez-carretero?_gl=1*1vhoh1m*_ga*NzU0MjM5MjI2LjE3NDQ5Mjc5MDk.*_ga_6R8SPL3HLT*MTc0NDkzMTg1Ni4yLjEuMTc0NDkzMTk2Mi42MC4wLjA." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Sandra Álvarez‑Carretero</a>.</p>



<p>Back then, asteroid impacts and belching volcanoes regularly upended the crust. Yet seafloor hydrothermal vents likely offered warm, metal‑rich oases. </p>



<p>Iron, nickel, and sulfur minerals could have driven the very reactions scripted in LUCA’s genome. </p>



<p>The Wood–Ljungdahl pathway, still used by some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-type-of-microbes-found-earths-deep-soil-critical-zone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">present‑day microbes</a>, fits neatly into that setting, turning vent chemistry into food and fuel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-luca-s-peace-was-short-lived">LUCA's peace was short-lived</h2>



<p>“Our study showed that LUCA was a complex organism, not too different from modern prokaryotes. What is really interesting is that it clearly possessed an early immune system, showing that even by 4.2 billion years ago, our ancestor was already engaged in an arms race with viruses,” said <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/people/person/Davide-Pisani-27ef6f2a-19b3-4474-b71c-e61f2c8585a4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Davide Pisani</a>. </p>



<p>Genes resembling today’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crispr-gene-editing-gets-a-revolutionary-upgrade-with-new-tool/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CRISPR</a> defenses suggest viral predators appeared almost as soon as cells did.</p>



<p>This constant sparring matters. Viral raids can shuffle genes between hosts faster than random mutation alone. </p>



<p>The pressure to dodge infection forces microbes to innovate, potentially speeding up the invention of new enzymes, pathways, and even entire metabolic lifestyles that later lineages would inherit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-sharing-space-with-luca">Microbes sharing space with LUCA</h2>



<p>It’s clear that LUCA was exploiting and changing its environment, but it is unlikely to have lived alone. </p>



<p>"Its waste would have been food for other microbes, like methanogens, that would have helped to create a recycling ecosystem,” observed Tim Lenton from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>. </p>



<p>In modern hydrothermal vents, acetate‑producers and methane‑makers trade leftovers, smoothing local chemistry and stabilizing energy flows.</p>



<p>Similar give‑and‑take could explain how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/was-early-earth-a-purple-planet-scientists-say-its-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early Earth</a> cycled carbon and hydrogen long before <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sounding-the-alarm-microplastics-are-disrupting-photosynthesis-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a> took the stage. </p>



<p>By knitting together waste and resource, hydrothermal vent communities may have tempered extreme swings in temperature and acidity, opening fresh niches for the next wave of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-first-bacteria-used-oxygen-about-one-billion-years-earlier-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary experiments</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-luca-matter">Why does LUCA matter?</h2>



<p>“The findings and methods employed in this work will also inform future studies that look in more detail into the subsequent evolution of prokaryotes in light of Earth history, including the lesser‑studied Archaea with their methanogenic representatives,” said Professor Anja Spang, co-author from the Royal Netherlands <a href="https://www.nioz.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Sea Research</a>.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/people/person/Philip-Donoghue-4fd2d6ef-3986-4566-97e4-7ae7db296525/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Philip Donoghue</a> highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the work, saying it brought together data and techniques from across multiple fields. </p>



<p>This collaborative approach, he explained, made it possible to uncover insights into early Earth and the origins of life that no single discipline could have revealed on its own. </p>



<p>He also pointed out how swiftly ecosystems seem to have taken root on the early planet - an observation that opens the door to the possibility that life might be thriving on other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-k2-18b-strongest-evidence-yet-of-extraterrestrial-life-discovered-webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth-like worlds</a> in the universe.</p>



<p>"This suggests that life may be flourishing on Earth‑like biospheres elsewhere in the universe," Donoghue concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, each genome pulled from ocean mud or desert crust adds a puzzle piece to LUCA’s portrait. </p>



<p>As sequencing tech grows faster and cheaper, scientists will keep hunting for ancient gene families, refining the ancestral blueprint, and scoping out early viral fossils hidden in microbial DNA. </p>



<p>New drilling missions aimed at untouched seafloor vents could reveal communities whose lifestyles echo those first biochemical gambles, tightening links between geology and genetics.</p>



<p>The storyline is still unfolding, but one takeaway already stands firm: life did not tiptoe onto the stage. It sprinted, armed with a full toolkit, ready to spar with viruses, and eager to reshape its surroundings - leaving every organism alive today carrying a hint of that four‑billion‑year‑old spark.</p>

Climate wins in 2025 came from unexpected places

<p>When a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named SuBastian dropped into the frigid waters near the South Sandwich Islands on March 9, the scientists watching the video feed expected fascinating footage of deep‑sea life. What they did not anticipate was history.&nbsp;</p>



<p>At roughly 600 meters (1,968 feet) below the surface, the ROV’s cameras recorded a transparent juvenile colossal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-species-of-deep-sea-squid-discovered-that-broods-giant-eggs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">squid</a> (<em>Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni</em>). This is the first time this legendary species has ever been observed alive in its natural habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-centennial-surprise">A centennial surprise</h2>



<p>The timing could not have been more fitting: 2024 marks one hundred years since zoologists first described and named the colossal squid, a member of the glass‑squid family <em>Cranchiidae</em>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After a century of piecing together its existence from beaks found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/language-like-patterns-decoded-in-sperm-whale-communication/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sperm‑whale</a> stomachs and the occasional adult cadaver tangled in fishing gear, researchers finally have moving images of a live individual.</p>



<p>“It's exciting to see the first in situ footage of a juvenile colossal and humbling to think that they have no idea that humans exist,” said Kat Bolstad from <a href="https://www.aut.ac.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Auckland University of Technology</a>, one of the experts who verified the find. </p>



<p>“For 100 years, we have mainly encountered them as prey remains in whale and seabird stomachs and as predators of harvested toothfish.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colossal-squid-in-every-sense">Colossal squid in every sense</h2>



<p>Even as a youngster, the squid measured nearly 30 centimeters (one foot) long. As adults, these giants are thought to reach seven meters (23 feet) and tip the scales at up to 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), making them the heaviest invertebrates on Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet they remain among the least understood marine animals. Juveniles like the one filmed are nearly transparent; with maturity they darken and lose that ghostly clarity.</p>



<p>Adult colossal squids - possibly exhausted or dying - have occasionally surfaced on fishing lines, but until now none had been witnessed alive in the abyss where they thrive.</p>

<p>Dr. Aaron Evans, an independent authority on glass squids, helped confirm the juvenile’s identity. One key clue was a set of hooks located midway along each arm - distinctive hardware that differentiates <em>M. hamiltoni</em> from similar glass‑squid species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Apart from those arm hooks, juveniles of several glass‑squid lineages can look remarkably alike: clear bodies, large eyes, and a pair of long feeding tentacles sporting sharp terminal hooks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-one-breakthrough-leads-to-another">One breakthrough leads to another</h2>



<p>The March discovery was not the research vessel’s only brush with squid lore. On January 25, during an earlier expedition to the Bellingshausen Sea near Antarctica, Falkor (too) scientists had filmed <em>Galiteuthis glacialis</em>, known as the glacial glass squid, alive and undisturbed for the first time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That sighting came as the team surveyed the seafloor where a Chicago‑sized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-ecosystem-sea-creatures-never-before-seen-revealed-antarctica-iceberg-breakup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iceberg</a> had calved from the George VI Ice Shelf. At 687 meters (2,254 feet) down, the transparent squid floated with its arms loose above its head - the so‑called “cockatoo pose” typical of glass squids.</p>



<p>“The first sighting of two different squids on back-to-back expeditions is remarkable and shows how little we have seen of the magnificent inhabitants of the Southern Ocean,” noted <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Schmidt Ocean Institute</a>’s executive director Jyotika Virmani.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Fortunately, we caught enough high‑resolution imagery of these creatures to allow the global experts, who were not on the vessel, to identify both species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-collaborative-voyage-of-discovery">A collaborative voyage of discovery</h2>



<p>Both encounters occurred aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too), equipped with the ROV SuBastian and supported via satellite telepresence by taxonomists around the world.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 35‑day cruise that netted the colossal‑squid footage served as the flagship expedition of Ocean Census, the largest global mission to discover marine life.</p>



<p>“It's incredible that we can leverage the power of the taxonomic community through R/V Falkor (too) telepresence while we are out at sea,” said expedition chief scientist Michelle Taylor from the <a href="https://www.essex.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Essex</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The Ocean Census international science network is proud to work together with the Schmidt Ocean Institute to accelerate species discovery and expand our knowledge of ocean life, live online with the world's science community.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-growing-catalog-of-firsts">A growing catalog of firsts</h2>



<p>SuBastian has rapidly become one of the world’s premier vehicles for squid discovery. In 2020, it filmed the enigmatic Ram’s Horn Squid (<em>Spirula spirula</em>) alive for the first time. </p>



<p>In 2024, before the colossal‑squid milestone, it captured another first‑ever video of a deep‑sea squid in the genus <em>Promachoteuthis</em>. A fifth suspected first is currently under expert review.</p>



<p>“These unforgettable moments continue to remind us that the Ocean is brimming with mysteries yet to be solved,” Virmani said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-colossal-squid-sightings">Significance of the colossal squid sightings</h2>



<p>Beyond the thrill of seeing elusive creatures, such footage provides valuable clues about life histories, behaviors, and ecosystems that were once purely speculative. </p>



<p>Observing a juvenile colossal squid confirms its depth range and offers hints about its developmental stages. </p>



<p>Similarly, viewing <em>G. glacialis</em> in the wild helps scientists understand how glass squids position themselves in the water column, interact with predators, and potentially respond to changing ocean conditions.</p>



<p>These findings come at a time when the Southern Ocean is undergoing rapid environmental change. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-melting-ice-shelves-threaten-global-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice‑shelf</a> calving, warming waters, and shifting currents could reshape food webs. Documenting present‑day biodiversity is crucial for detecting future alterations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-upcoming-images-of-deep-sea-life">Upcoming images of deep-sea life</h2>



<p>The researchers now plan to analyze the new video frames for details such as muscle movements, fin strokes, and eye orientation - data points that, when compared with dead specimens, can illuminate how these squids hunt and evade predators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There’s good reason why tropical forests are often called the lungs of the planet. They produce oxygen through photosynthesis and absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide. In this way, they help regulate Earth’s climate.</p>



<p>But these vital ecosystems are not immune to the growing stress of a changing climate.</p>



<p>A new study, conducted by researchers from <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a>, used a special laser detection system mounted aboard the International Space Station. This remote sensing technology is able to measure the 3D structure of objects on Earth's surface. It is used as part of the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI).</p>



<p>The new findings offer a deeper, more complete look at how global warming is impacting the height - and health - of tropical forest canopies across Asia, Africa, and South America, using canopy height as a key indicator of forest health and carbon storage capacity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-forest-height-matters">Why forest height matters</h2>



<p>The forest canopy - the uppermost layer formed by mature trees - is essential for ecosystem stability.</p>



<p>"The canopy is a very critical indicator of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-mammals-play-a-vital-role-in-maintaining-forest-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest health</a> and ecosystem productivity," explained Shaoqing Liu, a postdoctoral fellow and lead author of the study. </p>



<p>"In general, taller canopies are associated with high <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mixed-forests-with-many-tree-species-are-more-effective-at-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon storage</a> and greater above-ground biomass. Tall canopies can buffer the microclimate."</p>



<p>In fact, tall trees can even help cool the air during extreme heat events.</p>



<p>By using GEDI’s space-based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), the research team was able to gather global data on tropical forests in great detail with a level of coverage and accuracy that far surpasses earlier studies, which were mostly conducted on local or regional scales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-unique-eye-from-space">A unique eye from space</h2>



<p>"Over the past decade, NASA has been using the International Space Station as a convenient platform for evaluating new forms of space-based remote sensing measurements," said Paul Moorcroft, senior author of the study. </p>



<p>"The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation waveform LiDAR is a prime example of this approach."</p>



<p>GEDI - pronounced like "Jedi" - uses laser pulses to measure the vertical structure of forests. This includes not just canopy height, but also the density of leaves and branches throughout the forest column.</p>



<p>“Our study demonstrates that climate, topography, and soil properties account for almost three-quarters of the variation in tropical forest canopy height,” said Liu. </p>



<p>In addition, the study revealed that elevation, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-variability-drives-tropical-tree-growth-during-dry-season/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dry season</a> length, and solar radiation are the most important drivers of canopy height both locally and regionally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forests-face-big-climate-challenges">Forests face big climate challenges</h2>



<p>Not all tropical forests are reacting to climate change in the same way. The southern Amazon, for example, faces a distinct risk. </p>



<p>Liu noted that tropical forests in the southern Amazon area are vulnerable to climate change because of increasingly prolonged dry seasons. "The dry season is the dominant driver determining forest canopy height in this area."</p>



<p>With <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weather-in-dry-regions-isnt-behaving-as-climate-models-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate models</a> predicting even longer dry seasons in the future, Liu warned that we may see significant reductions in canopy height in the southern Amazon. Other regions show different trends.</p>



<p>"In the central Amazon, because it is relatively moist, the first important driver is actually elevation," Liu explained. The same holds true in parts of Africa, where elevation appears to play a stronger role than drought or heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-policy-implications-and-future-goals">Policy implications and future goals</h2>



<p>The findings have significant implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/progressive-approach-brings-new-hope-to-forest-conservation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest conservation</a> and climate strategies. According to Moorcroft, understanding the environmental controls of tropical forest height is important for assessing the carbon sequestration and conservation value of different tropical forest areas. </p>



<p>"Understanding the environmental drivers of forest canopy height variation is also crucial for understanding how tropical forests will respond to climate change," said Moorcroft.</p>



<p>Liu believes that the research can help inform policy decisions on where conservation efforts should be concentrated.</p>



<p>“In terms of climate-change policies, we see the tropical forests are not only <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-amazon-became-a-biodiversity-hotspot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity hotspots</a>, they are critical for carbon storage. Protecting them is essential for mitigating climate change,” said Liu.</p>



<p>“We hope to help policymakers identify areas that are vulnerable to climate change and prioritize them.”</p>



<p>Liu also plans to expand this research beyond untouched primary forests. He hopes to include other types of woodlands and forested areas to build a fuller picture of how Earth’s greenery is adapting - or struggling - to cope with climate pressure.</p>

Laser technology measures forest canopy height from space

<p>Perched high above the ocean on South Africa’s southern coast, a cave carved into a cliff has revealed thousands of ancient stone tools left behind by early humans some 20,000 years ago.</p>



<p>Through painstaking excavation and detailed analysis, a team of archaeologists has uncovered clues not only about how these tools were made, but also how people in the late <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-age-data-analysis-reshapes-climate-future-lowers-warming-estimates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice age</a> traveled, interacted, and passed along their techniques - suggesting a web of shared knowledge stretching across southern Africa.</p>



<p>The findings center on the Robberg technocomplex, a group of stone tool <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">technologies</a> used between 24,000 and 12,000 years ago. The study was led by Sara Watson, a postdoctoral scientist at the <a href="https://nirc.fieldmuseum.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Field Museum’s Negaunee Integrative Research Center</a>. </p>



<p>For Watson, the research offers a compelling window into the behavior of early Homo sapiens. “This is an important insight into how people who lived in this region were living and hunting and responding to their environment,” she said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stone-tools-during-the-ice-age">Stone tools during the ice age</h2>



<p>At the time the tools were crafted, the world was emerging from the last major ice age. With massive volumes of water locked in glaciers and ice sheets, global sea levels were much lower than today. </p>



<p>What is now a coastal cave overlooking the ocean would have stood several miles inland, adjacent to vast plains teeming with game.</p>



<p>“Instead of being right on the water like they are today, these caves would have been near vast, open plains with large game animals like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-antelope-hippotragus-leucophaeus-extinction-caused-european-colonization/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antelope</a>,” Watson said. “People hunted those animals, and to do that, they developed new tools and weapons.”</p>



<p>Today, however, the geography is strikingly different. The caves are embedded in a steep cliff face, towering nearly 75 feet above a rugged shoreline. Reaching the excavation site required determination - and serious safety equipment.</p>



<p>“It’s a 75-foot climb up to the cave from the shoreline,” Watson explained. “We had safety ropes and a staircase made of sandbags, and we had to be harnessed in while doing the excavation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cores-of-ancient-stone-tools">Cores of ancient stone tools</h2>



<p>Despite the challenges, the team hauled up all their excavation gear - sometimes 50 pounds per person - and carried out meticulous work using small dental tools and tiny trowels. </p>



<p>“Since these are extremely, extremely old sites, from before the end of the last ice age, we had to be very careful with our excavation,” Watson added.</p>



<p>Beneath layers of dust and sediment, the team unearthed a wealth of artifacts: thousands of sharp, small blades and the larger rocks - known as cores - from which those blades were struck. </p>



<p>While the blades may attract the most attention, it’s the cores that Watson finds most illuminating.</p>



<p>“When your average person thinks about stone tools, they probably focus on the detached pieces, the blades and flakes. But the thing that is the most interesting to me is the core, because it shows us the particular methods and order of operations that people went through in order to make their tools,” she said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stone-tools-and-communication">Stone tools and communication</h2>



<p>By closely analyzing the patterns etched into the surfaces of these cores, Watson and her colleagues identified distinct methods of reduction - techniques used to produce the desired blade shapes. These methods are not random. </p>



<p>Instead, they reflect intentional, culturally shared ways of making tools that were likely passed from one generation to the next.</p>



<p>“In a lot of these technologies, the core reduction is very specific, and it’s something that you are taught and learn, and that’s where the social information is,” Watson noted. </p>



<p>“If we see specific methods of core reduction at multiple sites across the landscape, as an archaeologist, it tells me that these people were sharing ideas with one another.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shared-traditions-across-hundreds-of-miles">Shared traditions across hundreds of miles</h2>



<p>One of the most telling discoveries in the Robberg cave was a particular technique for breaking small bladelets off a core - a method that has also been identified at archaeological sites hundreds of miles away in countries such as Namibia and Lesotho.</p>



<p>“Same core reduction pattern, same intended product,” Watson said. “The pattern is repeated over and over and over again, which indicates that it is intentional and shared, rather than just a chance similarity.”</p>



<p>These repeated techniques suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-had-surprising-diets-3-5-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early humans</a> in different regions were not isolated but part of a broader network of knowledge-sharing. Whether through seasonal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-age-climate-shifts-changed-early-human-migration-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration</a>, trade, or cultural exchange, they were likely communicating in ways that helped spread innovations across vast distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-human-story-etched-in-stone"><a></a>A human story etched in stone</h2>



<p>According to Watson, although the tools may be ancient, the people who made them were not so different from us. “We have a very long and rich history as a species, and humans go back a lot farther in time than most people realize,” she said. “People living around the last ice age were very similar to people today.”</p>



<p>The blades and cores from the Robberg caves tell more than a story of survival - they illustrate the complexity and adaptability of early human societies. They hint at long-distance connections, sophisticated knowledge transfer, and the ability to innovate in response to a changing world.</p>



<p>As researchers continue to dig into these layers of prehistory, each artifact recovered offers a new piece of the puzzle - an enduring link between our ancestors and the modern world.</p>

<p>We often think our first impressions come from sight as we notice how someone looks, speaks, and moves. We focus on what we see and hear, but there’s another sense, always present, usually unnoticed, that might shape friendship more than we realize: smell.</p>



<p>Every day, we pass strangers, meet new colleagues, and shake hands at events. Some of those people feel immediately familiar, others strangely distant. </p>



<p>Sometimes we like someone without knowing why. Sometimes we’re put off without a clear reason. Could it be the scent they carry - not necessarily a strong perfume or cologne, but the subtle mixture of personal habits that lingers in the air?</p>



<p>That’s the question a group of researchers set out to answer. Their study, recently published in <em>Scientific Reports</em>, reveals how scent - specifically what they call “diplomatic odor” - can guide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pets-increase-life-satisfaction-as-much-as-marriage-or-close-friendships/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social preferences</a> from the very first encounter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-our-scent-signals-future-friends">Our scent signals future friends</h2>



<p>Unlike natural body odor studied in past research, diplomatic odor reflects daily life. It includes perfumes, shampoos, laundry detergent, pets, food, and everything else that shapes how someone smells during a typical day.</p>



<p>Study lead author Jessica Gaby is an assistant professor of psychology at Middle Tennessee State University (<a href="https://www.mtsu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MTSU</a>).</p>



<p>"It's not just perfume," said Professor Gaby. "It's your dietary choices. Are you a cat person or dog person? What laundry detergent do you use?"</p>



<p>The study focused on how diplomatic odor influences friendship potential - how likely we are to want to connect with someone. Unlike studies of romantic attraction, this work explored platonic connections, the ones that make up most of our daily <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-theory-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend-proven-by-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social landscape</a>.</p>



<p>Friendship shapes mental and physical health. It helps people navigate life. Knowing what influences our initial decisions about friends matters. And as the study found, scent plays a surprisingly strong role.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-odor-influences-first-impressions">Odor influences first impressions </h2>



<p>The researchers designed a multi-part speed-friending event involving 40 women. First, they photographed the participants and gave them clean cotton T-shirts to wear during daily activities for around 12 hours.</p>



<p>Participants were asked to keep their habits unchanged, other than avoiding smoking and alcohol. They were told to wear the same products to the event that they used while wearing the shirts.</p>



<p>Then came the real test. In a controlled but realistic environment - a busy room full of chatter - participants smelled the worn shirts before any in-person meetings.</p>



<p>They rated how likely they would be to want to hang out with the wearer, be friends, or avoid them. This pre-interaction sniff test set the baseline. </p>



<p>The results already showed personal preferences. What smelled friendly to one person didn’t appeal to another. And that individual taste held meaning throughout the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scent-helps-predict-new-friends">Scent helps predict new friends</h2>



<p>Next came the live speed-friending part. Each participant had about ten four-minute conversations with different people. </p>



<p>They sat across small tables, introduced themselves, and chatted. After each brief conversation, they filled out forms judging their chat partner’s friendship potential - just as they had done earlier, based only on scent.</p>



<p>"People take a lot in when they're meeting face to face. But scent, which people are registering at some level, though probably not consciously, forecasts whether you end up liking this person," said Vivian Zayas, professor of psychology at <a href="https://www.cornell.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>.</p>



<p>The findings were striking. The friendship ratings based on smell alone closely matched the in-person ratings after the short chats.</p>



<p>"If you think you might be friends with someone you haven't met based on a tenth-of-a-second exposure to their photograph, you are also more likely to judge them as a potential friend based on the scent of their T-shirt," Zayas said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sight-smell-and-first-impressions">Sight, smell, and first impressions</h2>



<p>The study also included a test based on quick glances at portraits - 100 milliseconds per image. Even these brief flashes gave participants enough information to form an impression.</p>



<p>Yet when the researchers compared smell-based ratings with those based on photos, smell turned out to be the better predictor of how people felt after meeting someone. Multilevel statistical models confirmed that diplomatic odor had a stronger and more consistent effect than visuals.</p>



<p>Portrait-based judgments did matter - but not as much. The live interaction scores were more closely tied to what people had sniffed than what they had seen.</p>



<p>Importantly, this connection held even after accounting for other variables like time worn or intensity of the scent. The results were clear: scent quietly shapes social judgments, and does so powerfully.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interactions-can-change-perception">Interactions can change perception</h2>



<p>What’s more fascinating is that smell didn’t only influence how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-pressure-is-straining-teen-friendships/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">people</a> felt going into a conversation - it changed based on what happened in that conversation. </p>



<p>Participants repeated the sniff test after the live chats. This time, they judged the same T-shirts again. And their opinions had shifted.</p>



<p>"It makes sense to me that the way you smell impacts the way I judge you," Gaby said. "But I was most surprised by the learning, by the shift in the second set of readings - one interaction and you're like, hmmm, maybe not."</p>



<p>If someone had a good chat, their shirt smelled better afterward. If the interaction was disappointing, the scent seemed worse. This pattern suggests our brains update scent-based associations rapidly, using emotional memory to reframe what we’ve already experienced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scents-and-social-chemistry">Scents and social chemistry</h2>



<p>One of the strongest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-power-of-diversity-in-friendships/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">themes</a> in the study was individual preference. There wasn’t one universally liked or disliked smell. What appealed to one person might not appeal to another.</p>



<p>"Everybody showed they had a consistent signature of what they liked," Zayas said. "And the consistency was not that in the group one person smelled really bad and one person smelled really good. No, it was idiosyncratic."</p>



<p>This finding adds depth to how we think about social chemistry. It’s not just about shared interests or mutual friends - it might also be about shared scent spaces, shaped by laundry, pets, and food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-scent-of-friends">The scent of friends</h2>



<p>This study stands out because it took place in a natural setting. Participants weren’t isolated in scentless rooms. The researchers wanted to test scent in the kind of environment where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-friendships-improve-your-health-as-you-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">friendships</a> really form - noisy, busy, filled with competing sensory input.</p>



<p>In this real-world context, diplomatic odor still played a major role. It was perceptible and meaningful, even surrounded by other cues like voice, appearance, and body language.</p>



<p>The researchers also emphasized that diplomatic odor carries social information of its own. Unlike pure body odor, diplomatic scent reflects lifestyle and culture. It’s shaped by choice. This means scent may serve as a kind of soft signal about who we are - and who we might connect with.</p>



<p>Friendships help people thrive. They affect mood, resilience, and long-term health. And yet, we rarely stop to think about what drives those first moments of liking or disliking someone.</p>



<p>This research shows that our sense of smell plays a role in those judgments. Not consciously, not obviously - but powerfully.</p>

<p>Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



<p>The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. <p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
