<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>Bacterial neighbors can be fierce rivals in their daily scuffle for resources. Some Pseudomonas bacteria species use specialized microscopic membrane devices to fight back against competing bacteria.</p>



<p>According to new research, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-strain-identified-that-can-eat-forever-chemicals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cells</a> react to threats by assembling a precise injection tool inside their outer shell. </p>



<p>This work comes from the lab of <a href="https://www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/about/administration/administration-a-z/overview/unit/research-group-marek-basler" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Marek Basler</a> at the Biozentrum, <a href="https://www.unibas.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Basel</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pseudomonas-bacteria-and-nano-spearguns"><em>Pseudomonas</em> bacteria and nano-spearguns</h2>



<p>These weapon-like structures are known as the type VI secretion system (<a href="https://asm.org/articles/2023/april/type-vi-secretion-systems-weapons-of-bacterial-des" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T6SS</a>), and they allow bacteria to inject harmful molecules into rivals. </p>



<p>They have been studied extensively because of their importance in bacterial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">competition</a> and survival.</p>



<p>“We knew that <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> bacteria uses its T6SS to fire back when attacked,” said Basler. Scientists had long <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18289922/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suspected</a> that external stress might activate these devices in <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/25164-pseudomonas-infection" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em></a>. </p>



<p>One survey showed that T6SS genes occur in about a quarter of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538213/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gram-negative species</a>, highlighting their prevalence as a competitive strategy.</p>



<p>Some bacteria also direct T6SS at eukaryotic targets, affecting plant and animal hosts. This flexibility helps them adapt to diverse situations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-t6ss-genes-the-basics">Understanding T6SS genes - the basics</h2>



<p>T6SS genes control the Type VI Secretion System (T6SS), an impressive molecular weapon that bacteria use to fight each other and sometimes even mess with host cells. </p>



<p>Think of it as a microscopic harpoon gun - bacteria literally shoot toxic proteins into rival microbes to kill them or weaken their defenses. </p>



<p>Some bacteria also use T6SS to interact with host organisms, either to establish infections or to outcompete other microbes in a shared environment. </p>



<p>This system gives bacteria a serious advantage in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-that-love-to-kill-bacteria-could-help-fight-deadly-infections/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microscopic battlefield</a>, whether they're battling it out in soil, water, or even inside a host’s gut.</p>



<p>Scientists are fascinated by T6SS because it plays a huge role in bacterial survival, competition, and even virulence. </p>



<p>Some nasty pathogens, like <em>Vibrio cholerae</em> (which causes cholera) and <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> (a major threat in hospitals), use T6SS to dominate their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mechanical-force-as-a-trigger">Mechanical force as a trigger</h2>



<p>“Using AFM, we have been able to mimic a bacterial T6SS attack,” said Yves F Dufrêne, a doctoral researcher at the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17661630/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swiss Nanoscience Institute</a>. </p>



<p>The team used atomic force microscopy (<a href="https://www.nanoscience.com/techniques/atomic-force-microscopy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AFM</a>) to gently push on the bacterial surface with a very fine tip. </p>



<p>By applying measured force, they found that the <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8934262/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outer membrane</a> damage alone could spur this injection tool into action. Once activated, the cells unleashed a burst of toxin-bearing elements to ward off intruders.</p>



<p>Studies from different labs have shown that surfaces with varied stiffness can influence <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/23-new-marine-bacteria-species-discovered-that-influence-global-ocean-cycles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial</a> attachment. However, it was less clear how direct mechanical stress might activate a defensive tool like T6SS.</p>



<p>Laboratories investigating <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/food-science/vibrio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vibrio species</a> observed T6SS responses to mechanical cues in marine environments. </p>



<p>These clues paved the way for experiments focusing on Pseudomonas under controlled force measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pseudomonas-bacteria-attack-detection"><em>Pseudomonas</em> bacteria attack detection</h2>



<p>The scientists discovered that the site of membrane rupture guided the T6SS to assemble at the exact spot of assault. This high precision helps reduce wasted energy and ensures toxins only hit the intended target.</p>



<p>“Our work clearly shows that breaking the outer membrane is necessary and sufficient to trigger T6SS assembly,” said Basler.</p>



<p> Researchers believe this system works thanks to a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/phosphorylation-cascade" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phosphorylation cascade</a> that springs into action upon sensing disruption. </p>



<p>Pinpointing the exact trigger site allows minimal resource expenditure while maximizing impact on an aggressor. This specificity keeps the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-pass-down-memories-to-future-generations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial</a> cell from randomly launching costly attacks.</p>



<p>Scientists are interested in finding the molecular components that link physical membrane disturbance to T6SS initiation. These details could open doors for inhibitors designed to neutralize this response.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-assault-on-the-membrane">Chemical assault on the membrane</h2>



<p>Interestingly, certain antibiotics or <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/peptide-derivative" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">peptide derivatives</a> also weaken the same barrier. This hints that chemical agents capable of penetrating the membrane can provoke a similar defensive strike.</p>



<p>The findings could be significant when considering <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/pharmacology-toxicology-and-pharmaceutical-science/multiple-drug-resistance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multidrug resistance</a> in clinical settings. If a damaged outer membrane leads to a swift T6SS reaction, it might alter how pathogens respond to various medications.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/polymyxin-derivative" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polymyxin derivatives</a>, often reserved for severe infections, disrupt the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. </p>



<p>This disruption can unintentionally activate T6SS, giving the pathogen a countermeasure against rival organisms.</p>



<p>Understanding this dynamic may help clinicians refine how these drugs are applied in critical care. If T6SS ramps up under partial membrane stress, combination therapies might offer a more thorough strategy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-for-pseudomonas-bacteria-study">Next steps for <em>Pseudomonas</em> bacteria study</h2>



<p>Much still needs to be clarified, such as how multiple T6SS assemblies are precisely regulated once the membrane is compromised. Different strains may also vary in how sensitive they are to mechanical or chemical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-in-lake-mendota-keep-evolving-but-never-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cues</a>.</p>



<p>The bigger picture could involve a network of signals that prime bacteria to respond rapidly whenever their boundary is breached. </p>



<p>Exploring these nuances might help researchers develop ways to disrupt this mechanism without harming beneficial microbes.</p>



<p>Researchers suspect that different bacterial species have unique thresholds for activating T6SS when threatened. </p>



<p>This variation might determine which organisms thrive in complex environments like soil or aquatic habitats.</p>



<p>Experts are also investigating the role of protein partners that reset or limit T6SS after activation. </p>



<p>Gaining clarity on the shutdown mechanism could lead to ways of blocking these assemblies and tackling antibiotic-resistant infections in the future.</p>

Bacteria build tiny 'nano-spearguns' to fight back against attacks

<p>A frog species thought to be missing for well over a century has been spotted again.&nbsp;This startling discovery was announced by a group of Chilean and international researchers.</p>



<p>First described in 1902, the species <em>Alsodes vittatus</em> had not appeared in any scientific records for more than 130 years. </p>



<p>Despite multiple expeditions attempting to locate the frog in the intervening decades, all efforts ended in vain - until now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-discovery">Significance of the discovery </h2>



<p>Recent fieldwork by researchers from the Laboratory of Systematics and Conservation of Herpetozoa (SyCoH) at the <a href="https://www.udec.cl/pexterno/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Concepción</a> has confirmed that the elusive amphibian is, in fact, still alive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings detail the missing frog’s reemergence in the southeastern region of the Hacienda San Ignacio de Pemehue in La Araucanía, Chile.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This rediscovery represents a significant moment for scientists studying South American <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>, especially in light of the many frog species currently listed as threatened or lacking sufficient data to assess their status.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-missing-frog-species">A missing frog species</h2>



<p><em>Alsodes vittatus</em>, originally described by naturalist Rodulfo Amando Philippi, was initially located by French entomologist Philibert Germain in 1893, who provided the three specimens that Philippi used to define the species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Ever since then, it has disappeared from the record. Between 1995 and 2002, researchers combed the Pemehue area, determined to relocate <em>A. vittatus</em>, but none succeeded.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Efforts resumed in 2015 and 2016, yet the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-frog-day-addressing-environmental-threats-to-frogs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frog</a> populations identified lacked the characteristic white or yellow dorsal stripe that defines <em>A. vittatus</em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-south-america-s-frog-species">South America's frog species </h2>



<p>Eventually, over a decade into the investigation, new teams led by Dr. Claudio Correa, engineer in renewable natural resources Edvin Riveros Riffo, and biologist Juan Pablo Donoso focused on a different part of the same region. Their change of venue paid off.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Within the Lolco and Portales river basins at the southeastern end of the former estate, they spotted two populations of a frog that, upon careful examination, was confirmed to be <em>A. vittatus</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This unexpected triumph sheds light on important conservation implications for frogs in the southern cone of South America.</p>



<p>“The main challenge in locating it was the lack of precision in the description of its type locality,” the researchers wrote. </p>



<p>“In Germain's time, the Hacienda San Ignacio de Pemehue was an estate of enormous size, and the naturalist did not specify the exact place where he collected the specimens.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-retracing-old-footsteps">Retracing old footsteps</h2>



<p>While the northwestern section of the old hacienda had been surveyed frequently, there was little information about areas farther to the southeast.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Because Germain never noted his precise collecting site, the modern team resorted to reconstructing his likely path through historical documents and publications.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Armed with this historical context, Correa and Riveros hiked the estate from its southeastern reaches, culminating in the discovery that <em>Alsodes vittatus</em> still exists - albeit in small populations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-risks-to-amphibians-nbsp">Significant risks to amphibians&nbsp;</h2>



<p>More than a century after its scientific description, scientists now have their first biological and ecological data on <em>A. vittatus</em>. The species is found living near streams, as is common among many other <em>Alsodes</em> frogs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By sampling individuals carefully, the team identified the presence of the distinctive dorsal stripe that sets <em>A. vittatus</em> apart.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Because most Alsodes frogs are extremely local in their habitats and easily disturbed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-activities-are-weakening-earths-air-circulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human activities</a>, the researchers believe <em>A. vittatus</em> faces several immediate threats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Local land-use changes, logging activities, and climate factors all pose significant risks to amphibians in Chile’s temperate forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-and-threatened-frog-species">Missing and threatened frog species</h2>



<p>This is a major milestone for South American herpetology and the conservation of biodiversity in the southern region. </p>



<p>Many frogs in the region are threatened with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eu-responsible-for-extinction-of-frog-populations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinction</a>, so clarifying the distribution and life history of this one species is a crucial first step toward its protection. </p>



<p>Field evidence collected by the team indicates that <em>A. vittatus</em> could meet criteria for classification as an endangered species. </p>



<p>Further studies will be needed to confirm population sizes, any breeding sites, and precise habitat conditions.</p>



<p>“In a broader context, this rediscovery demonstrates the limited biological, evolutionary and biogeographic knowledge of the amphibians that inhabit the southern cone of South America, emphasizing the urgency of their study and conservation,” the scientists wrote.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Since multiple <em>Alsodes</em> species remain poorly understood, the authors encourage additional research and collaboration to fill knowledge gaps.</p>

<p>Above all, the reappearance of a species lost to science for 130 years demonstrates that biodiversity can hide in overlooked corners of the Earth and highlights the value of determined research efforts.</p>

Scientists, however, often avoid jokes when presenting their work, worried that a lighthearted tone might reduce their authority and, consequently, the perceived reliability of their research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet a newly published paper appears to contradict this assumption, pointing toward humor’s potential to bolster a scientist’s likability and legitimize their message.</p>



<p>The research was led by Alexandra Lynn Frank, a doctoral student at the <a href="https://www.uga.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Georgia</a>’s Grady College of Mass Communication.</p>



<p>The results showed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-who-use-humor-have-better-relationships-with-their-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humor</a> - if it genuinely elicits amusement - “can both have positive impacts on the likeability of a communicator, as well as enhancing perceptions that the message is an appropriate and legitimate source of scientific information.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>This conclusion broadens a growing line of inquiry into how comedic strategies in public outreach, such as stand-up performances, might sharpen scientific engagement. Frank’s research team placed their focus on a specific context, examining humor in the context of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spending-less-time-on-social-media-improves-your-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> posts from scientists.</p>



<p>“Our study aimed to bridge this gap by enhancing our understanding of how individuals react to anthropomorphism and satire while providing practical insights for scientists and science communicators,” Frank explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cartoons-anthropomorphism-and-satire">Cartoons, anthropomorphism, and satire</h2>



<p>The project centered on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-reveals-hidden-climate-extremes-in-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial intelligence</a> (AI) content conveyed via cartoons in social media posts by a fabricated scientist named Dr. Jamie Devon. Three types of humor were tested: mild satire, anthropomorphism, or a mixture of both. Alongside these were control posts that lacked any humorous element.</p>



<p>Frank and her team ran an online survey with an embedded experiment. While participants realized they were completing a survey, they did not know they were part of an experiment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Carefully selected using quota sampling aligned with U.S. Census data, 2,212 individuals viewed one of eight hypothetical tweets from Dr. Devon. Each tweet addressed AI and contained a cartoon, but the humorous aspect varied by group: no humor, anthropomorphism, satire, or a combination of both.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Survey respondents then rated how amusing the content was, how much they liked the fictional scientist, and how credible they felt the material was as a source of scientific knowledge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-authentic-humor">The power of authentic humor</h2>



<p>“Politicians, entertainers, and advertisers often use humor because people tend to like and connect with people who can make them laugh,” said Frank.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When people find something funny, they’re usually less likely to argue with or reject the message or the person delivering it. Our research supports this idea. We found that humor can aid scientists’ communication efforts, but only if people think they’re funny.”</p>



<p>In other words, a humorous approach must genuinely provoke amusement in an audience, or it might do more harm than good. The study also warns that certain types of comedy, especially harsh satire, can appear hostile and reduce the speaker’s believability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“However, it is important to note that recent research conducted by my co-authors indicates that harsh forms of satire can be perceived as aggressive, which may undermine the credibility of the source of scientific information,” noted Frank.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientists-and-humor-on-social-media">Scientists and humor on social media</h2>



<p>Sarcasm or combative humor is therefore discouraged. Instead, Frank and her co-authors propose that scientists on social media carefully select the tone of their jokes, aiming for content that resonates positively with readers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings raise implications for how scientists might adopt novel and more engaging communication techniques.</p>



<p>“Our research aims to provide valuable insights to aid these professionals in developing public communication strategies,” said Frank, adding that comedic methods used judiciously have the power to establish a warmer connection.</p>



<p>“When used responsibly, humor is a powerful tool that can humanize scientists and create meaningful connections with the public on social media. By leveraging humor, scientists can simplify complex concepts, making them more relatable and easier to understand.”</p>



<p>“This approach not only fosters goodwill but also has the potential to dispel misinformation in a friendly manner. Moreover, humor can spark curiosity, motivating people to seek out additional information on important scientific topics.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-outreach">Implications for future outreach</h2>



<p>By conveying a scientist’s approachable side while maintaining factual accuracy, humor might help reframe weighty or complicated research subjects in ways that more people can digest.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the cautionary reminders about harsh satire underline the importance of aligning comedic approaches with the values of trustworthiness and sensitivity to one’s audience.</p>



<p>Although this study revolved around AI-related posts, its results could apply to a wide range of scientific discussions, suggesting that thoughtful use of jokes, cartoons, or playful analogies can enhance both interest and respect for scientific viewpoints.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For scientists venturing into social media - a domain that often shapes public perception - the research offers a signpost for bridging expertise with accessibility, reinforcing the message that a genuine sense of mirth can be an ally rather than a liability in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-trust-science-but-want-better-communication/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">science communication</a>.</p>



<p>In a digital ecosystem where short attention spans and skepticism can challenge the spread of scientific information, humor stands out as a channel for empathy and engagement.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As Frank’s study indicates, humor and factual accuracy need not be at odds. Instead, a carefully tailored, genuinely amusing approach can make the communicator more likable, the message more credible, and the science more understandable - ultimately helping to broaden support for scientific endeavors.</p>

Humor helps scientists connect with the public and gain trust

Politicians learned long ago that humor is a powerful asset...

<p>Water is unlike any other substance we encounter daily. Imagine a frozen pond, its icy surface concealing a liquid world beneath, while storm clouds swirl overhead. This interplay of solid, liquid, and gas highlights water's remarkable versatility.</p>



<p>Not to mention, water is one of the few substances whose solid incarnation is less dense than its liquid form, explaining why ice cubes bob around your drink.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-does-water-have-a-second-liquid-phase">Does water have a second liquid phase?</h2>



<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California San Diego</a> recently revealed another twist in water's tale. </p>



<p>Under a specific set of conditions comprising high pressure and low temperature, water splits into two liquid phases, high-density and low-density. Once confirmed, this discovery could make a significant impact in the world of physics.</p>



<p>The research was led by Francesco Paesani, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego.</p>



<p>Professor Paesani and his team create realistic molecular models that mirror experimental measurements, thanks to the application of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neuromorphic-computing-where-ai-meets-human-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">machine learning</a> techniques and algorithms.</p>



<p>"Our water model is so realistic you can almost drink it," said Professor Paesani.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-is-not-always-homogenous">Water is not always homogenous </h2>



<p>Typically, liquids are homogenous - they flow seamlessly, and distinguishing one molecule from the next would be impossible. This general rule applies to water as well.</p>



<p>However, in 1992, researchers theorized that beyond a certain temperature and pressure, water would no longer remain homogenous. Now, the UC San Diego team has conducted simulations that verified this theory.</p>



<p>The researchers pinpointed the critical point, approximately 198 Kelvin (-103 Fahrenheit) and 1,250 atmospheres, where water spontaneously separates into high-density and low-density phases.</p>



<p>Beyond this point, water alternates wildly between these phases; a phenomenon that defies expectations and evolves at a molecular level.</p>



<p>The 1992 researchers relied on a basic simulation to predict this unusual <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/scientists-cannot-fully-explain-the-behavior-of-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior in water</a>. Since then, scientists have made several attempts to recreate this spontaneous division in controlled lab conditions, but without success.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, the world of computational modeling has evolved significantly over the past decades, especially with the rise of "data-driven many-body potentials." This is a field that Professor Paesani's team specializes in.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-across-the-entire-phase-diagram">Water across the entire phase diagram</h2>



<p>The data-driven many-body model of water (MB-pol) developed by the Paesani group is trained on high-level quantum mechanical calculations (data-driven) and rather than calculating the energy of an entire system at once, they deconstruct energy in terms of individual contributions (many-body).</p>



<p>According to the researchers, these reference energies are fed into a machine learning model that is then able to provide realistic simulations of water across the entire phase diagram.</p>



<p>Just as adding another person to a crowded room hardly affects the behavior of individuals, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-molecule-discovery-will-force-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water molecules</a> behave in a certain way until a point where additional changes make no significant impact, noted Professor Paesani.</p>



<p>"Quantum mechanical simulations can be extremely expensive. You might be able to calculate the energies of five or six water molecules. Our method, using MB-pol and machine learning, allows us to run simulations for up to several microseconds," said Paesani.</p>



<p>"This is something computational molecular scientists have dreamed about for a long time."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-road-ahead-liquid-liquid-separation">The road ahead: Liquid-liquid separation</h2>



<p>Despite the significant breakthrough, the journey was far from easy. The simulations used in this research took around two years of continuous calculations, made possible only by some of the world's most powerful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supercomputers</a>.</p>



<p>As we look forward, this research could potentially lead to the creation of synthetic liquids exhibiting similar liquid-liquid transitions as water under ordinary conditions.</p>



<p>Imagine porous liquids that behave akin to sponges and are capable of capturing pollutants or aiding in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cheap-and-drinkable-water-from-desalination-is-finally-a-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water desalinization</a>.</p>



<p>"The simulation took almost two years, so this is a really exciting accomplishment," said Paesani. "I think our estimate is very realistic. Now it's up to the experimental researchers to prove our predictions right."</p>



<p>Though recreating these conditions in a lab remains challenging, advances in nanodroplet technology - for instance, creating tiny water droplets that generate high internal pressure through surface tension - could lend a helping hand.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41567-024-02761-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Physics</a></em>.</p>

Water appears to have a secret liquid phase

<p>Long before the first rays of sunlight brushed the California horizon, an extraordinary homecoming took place. The U.S. military’s experimental space plane, the X-37B, touched down in secrecy, its journey ending just as mysteriously as it began. </p>



<p>After spending 434 days orbiting Earth, the un-crewed vehicle returned to <a href="https://www.vandenberg.spaceforce.mil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vandenberg Space Force Base</a>. </p>



<p>Only hours later did officials acknowledge the event, leaving the world once again questioning the true purpose of this enigmatic program.</p>



<p>This was no ordinary spacecraft mission. Launched in December 2023 from NASA’s <a href="https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kennedy Space Center</a>, the X-37B carried no astronauts - only classified experiments. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.spacex.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpaceX</a> provided the lift into orbit, but after that, the miniature shuttle’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-spacecraft-set-out-to-drill-for-water-on-the-moons-south-pole/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activities</a> remained largely hidden from public view.</p>



<p>Now back on solid ground, its journey fuels speculation about what tests and technologies were refined during its extended stay above the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brief-history-of-the-x-37b">Brief history of the X-37B</h2>



<p>Originally, NASA started developing the X-37B in 1999, but the Department of Defense took over in 2004, and that’s when things got classified. Since then, the spaceplane has launched on a variety of missions. </p>



<p>The longest trip the public is aware of, which ended in 2022, lasted a mind-blowing 908 days, dwarfing this most recent mission timeline. That’s almost two and a half years orbiting Earth without anyone onboard. </p>



<p>It takes off like a regular rocket, usually hitching a ride on a <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/falcon-9/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpaceX Falcon 9</a> or <a href="https://www.ulalaunch.com/rockets/atlas-v" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ULA Atlas V</a>, but it returns more like an airplane, landing smoothly on a runway.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-military-space-plane-returns">Military space plane returns </h2>



<p>Unlike traditional crewed missions, this space plane slipped into the sky without public fanfare. No live-streamed countdown, no astronauts waving goodbye. </p>



<p>The X-37B’s launch was marked only by the fire of its rocket engines as it left Earth behind. What followed was more than a year of silent travel, its purpose known only to those with the highest security clearance.</p>



<p>When it finally returned, there was no grand welcome. </p>



<p>The spacecraft glided through the darkness, unseen by most, until its wheels met the runway in the pre-dawn hours. The U.S. <a href="https://www.spaceforce.mil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Force</a> released no immediate statements.</p>



<p>Only later did images surface - grainy photos of the black-and-white vehicle resting on the airstrip, an unspoken testament to its long and mysterious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-a-planet-k2-22b-disintegrating-at-a-speed-never-seen-before/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">voyage</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-achievement-revealed">Key achievement revealed</h2>



<p>Each mission by the X-37B adds another layer to its reputation as one of the most advanced unmanned spacecraft in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturns-majestic-rings-will-vanish-next-week-ring-plane-crossing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">existence</a>.</p>



<p>This time, the military emphasized a key achievement: the ability to change orbits using atmospheric drag rather than burning large amounts of fuel. </p>



<p>This technique, if perfected, could allow spacecraft to operate with greater endurance while maintaining the agility to adjust their paths as needed.</p>



<p>"It's an exciting new chapter in the X-37B program," stated program director Lt. Colonel Blaine Stewart.</p>



<p>Though details remain scarce, the ability to shift orbits efficiently hints at future advancements in both reconnaissance and long-duration spaceflight. The implications for national security and scientific research could be profound.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pushing-the-limits-of-space-exploration">Pushing the limits of space exploration</h2>



<p>The X-37B program has been in operation since 2010, with each mission pushing the limits of unmanned space endurance. </p>



<p>While this most recent flight lasted 434 days, previous ones have stretched even longer, with a 908-day mission holding the record.</p>



<p>The vehicle itself is small by spacecraft standards, measuring just 29 feet in length with a wingspan of nearly 15 feet. </p>



<p>Its design resembles a miniature version of NASA’s retired space shuttles, though the X-37B operates entirely without human crew.</p>



<p>Boeing engineers crafted it for repeated use, making it one of the few reusable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spaceship-thruster-technology-fueled-by-any-type-of-metal-could-fly-indefinitely/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a> planes in existence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrecy-of-the-military-space-mission">Secrecy of the military space mission</h2>



<p>A recently released image from 2024 captures a rare perspective from the spacecraft itself. Taken by the X-37B’s onboard camera, the photograph showcases Earth as seen from high Earth orbit. </p>



<p>Though beautiful, the image also raises questions. What experiments were conducted in such a remote region of&nbsp;space? What new technologies were tested on the&nbsp;military space plane, far from prying eyes?</p>



<p>With secrecy surrounding much of the mission, speculation runs wild. Some believe the vehicle is testing new surveillance systems. </p>



<p>Others suspect advancements in satellite deployment or military-grade communications technology.</p>



<p>Whatever the case, its prolonged stay in orbit suggests complex research that could shape the future of space operations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-frontiers-of-technology">New frontiers of technology </h2>



<p>What lies ahead for the X-37B remains unknown to all but a select few. </p>



<p>The lessons learned from this mission will likely inform future flights, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in long-term, unmanned space travel. </p>



<p>Each journey seems to last longer, venture farther, and test new frontiers of technology.</p>



<p>For now, the&nbsp;military space plane&nbsp;sits safely back on Earth, its secrets locked away. But it will not stay grounded forever. </p>



<p>Somewhere in the future, a new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-will-search-for-signs-of-life-on-jupiters-icy-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space mission</a>&nbsp;awaits, another launch in the darkness, another journey without an audience, and another silent return to a world eager for answers.</p>

What was it doing? U.S. space plane returns after 14 mysterious months

Long before the first rays of sunlight brushed the California...

<p>The farthest-flung human-made objects will be able to take their mission even farther, thanks to a series of power-saving decisions. On February 25, engineers turned off the cosmic ray subsystem experiment on Voyager 1, and on March 24, they will deactivate Voyager 2’s low-energy charged particle instrument.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Three science instruments will remain active on each spacecraft, enabling the twin probes to keep transmitting data from interstellar space despite an ever-declining power supply.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-challenges-in-deep-space">Energy challenges in deep space</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/voyager-1-resumes-sending-data-to-earth-from-interstellar-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Voyager 1</a> and Voyager 2, launched in 1977, rely on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator that converts the heat from decaying plutonium into electricity. Each spacecraft loses about 4 watts of power every year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The project team, led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>), has been gradually switching off instruments and systems to manage this dwindling energy, which is critical to the continued operation of the probes’ most important science instruments.</p>



<p>“The Voyagers have been deep space rock stars since launch, and we want to keep it that way as long as possible. But electrical power is running low,” said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at JPL.</p>



<p>“If we don’t turn off an instrument on each Voyager now, they would probably have only a few more months of power before we would need to declare end of mission.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-voyager-s-instrument-load">Reducing Voyager’s instrument load</h2>



<p>Each spacecraft originally carried ten instruments, many of which were designed to study <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-is-our-trip-to-jupiter-taking-so-long/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter</a>, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune during flybys in the 1980s.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over the decades, after the planetary portion of the mission concluded, several instruments were deactivated, leaving the ones needed to investigate the heliosphere - the bubble of charged particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun - and interstellar space, where both Voyagers are now traveling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in 2012, followed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-lost-contact-with-voyager-2-spacecraft-12-billion-miles-away/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Voyager 2</a> in 2018, making them the only spacecraft to operate in that unknown realm.</p>



<p>Engineers decided in October to turn off Voyager 2’s plasma science instrument, which measures plasma flow but had collected limited recent data due to its orientation. </p>



<p>Voyager 1’s version of this instrument had been switched off years ago for performance reasons. </p>



<p>Now, the team has also shut down Voyager 1’s cosmic ray subsystem experiment, which consisted of three telescopes that studied energetic particles from the Sun and the wider galaxy. </p>



<p>The data from that experiment was essential for pinpointing Voyager 1’s crossing from the heliosphere into interstellar space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-instruments-going-offline">Key instruments going offline</h2>



<p>Next, the team will shut down the low-energy charged particle instrument on Voyager 2, which examines ions, electrons, and cosmic rays. </p>



<p>The instrument includes two subsystems: a low-energy particle telescope for broad energy measurements, and a low-energy magnetospheric particle analyzer for specialized studies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Both components rely on a rotating platform powered by a stepper motor that draws 15.7 watts every 192 seconds. </p>



<p>That motor was tested to last through the spacecraft’s Saturn encounter in 1980, but by the time the instrument is powered off, it will have performed more than 8.5 million steps.</p>



<p>“The Voyager spacecraft have far surpassed their original mission to study the outer planets,” said Patrick Koehn, Voyager program scientist at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> Headquarters in Washington. </p>



<p>“Every bit of additional data we have gathered since then is not only valuable bonus science for heliophysics, but also a testament to the exemplary engineering that has gone into the Voyagers - starting nearly 50 years ago and continuing to this day.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustaining-deep-space-exploration">Sustaining deep space exploration</h2>



<p>Mission engineers have chosen to deactivate as few scientific instruments as possible because the probes deliver unique observations from the edge of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interstellar-tunnel-found-that-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar system</a>. </p>



<p>By carefully rationing power, they expect both Voyagers to keep collecting data for at least another year before more instruments must be switched off. </p>



<p>Voyager 1 will continue operating its magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem, while its low-energy charged particle instrument will remain on through 2025 and then be switched off. </p>



<p>Voyager 2 will keep running its magnetic field and plasma wave instruments, with its cosmic ray subsystem slated for shutdown in 2026.</p>



<p>Implementing this new power management approach should allow each spacecraft to keep at least one instrument functioning into the 2030s. </p>



<p>However, the team acknowledges that the Voyagers, which have traveled for 47 years, could face unanticipated problems that shorten that timeline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-trailblazing-voyager-mission">The trailblazing Voyager mission</h2>



<p>Voyager 1 is currently more than 15 billion miles (25 billion kilometers) from Earth, and Voyager 2 is over 13 billion miles (21 billion kilometers) away. </p>



<p>Communicating with them is a slow process, taking about 23 hours for a signal to reach Voyager 1 and more than 19 hours to reach Voyager 2.</p>



<p>“Every minute of every day, the Voyagers explore a region where no spacecraft has gone before,” said Linda Spilker, Voyager project scientist at JPL.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“That also means every day could be our last. But that day could also bring another interstellar revelation. So, we’re pulling out all the stops, doing what we can to make sure Voyagers 1 and 2 continue their trailblazing for the maximum time possible,” she concluded.</p>

<p>A total lunar eclipse is set to transform the moon into a deep red as it passes through Earth's shadow. The eclipse will unfold late Thursday night into early Friday morning, and will be visible across the Western Hemisphere. </p>



<p>The last total lunar eclipse occurred on November 8, 2022, marking the first to align with Election Day in the United States. Once again, the moon will slip behind Earth, illuminated in red by scattered sunlight.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-the-moon-turn-red">Why does the moon turn red?</h2>



<p>During the event, the moon and the sun will stand on opposite sides of Earth, perfectly aligned. When this happens, our planet blocks sunlight that would normally reach the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tonights-worm-moon-coincides-with-a-subtle-lunar-eclipse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a>.</p>



<p>Instead of going dark, the moon glows red because Earth's atmosphere bends and filters the sunlight, scattering shorter wavelengths and letting only deep reds and oranges pass through. This phenomenon has earned the name “blood moon.”</p>



<p>According to NASA, between four and seven lunar and solar eclipses take place each year. Most of them are partial, and only part of the moon is shadowed. But a total lunar eclipse, when the moon disappears into Earth’s shadow entirely, is far less common.</p>



<p>The last time the world witnessed one, it could be seen in Asia, Australia, and across the Pacific. This time, the best seats belong to North and South America, though a faint glimpse may still be possible in parts of Europe and Africa.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-watch-the-eclipse">How to watch the eclipse</h2>



<p>No need for telescopes or protective glasses - this is one of the few <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harvest-moon-2024-will-feature-a-partial-lunar-eclipse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial events</a> that requires nothing but your eyes and a clear sky.</p>



<p>The eclipse will begin at&nbsp;2:26 a.m. Eastern on Friday, March 14, 2025, reaching its most dramatic moment around&nbsp;3 a.m.&nbsp;when the moon takes on its fiery glow. The entire event will last roughly an hour, giving skywatchers plenty of time to take in the view.</p>



<p>“As long as the sky is clear, you should be able to see it,” said Shannon Schmoll, director of Abrams Planetarium at <a href="https://msu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michigan State University</a>.</p>



<p>For those in Africa and Europe, the moon’s setting may cut the experience short. While some may still catch part of the eclipse, visibility won’t be as clear as it will be across the Americas.</p>



<p>“This is really an eclipse for North and South America,” said astronomy expert Michael Faison from <a href="https://www.yale.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-will-next-lunar-eclipse-happen">When will next lunar eclipse happen?</h2>



<p>The next total lunar eclipse visible in the U.S. will not occur until&nbsp;March 2026. </p>



<p>Until then, skywatchers may catch&nbsp;partial lunar eclipses, but a full&nbsp;blood moon&nbsp;won’t return for another two years. These events are rare, making each occurrence special.</p>



<p>For those who enjoy astronomical predictions, the next Election Day lunar eclipse is an extremely distant event. It won’t happen until November 8, 2394 - a staggering 372 years from now. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lunar-eclipses-in-history">Lunar eclipses in history</h2>



<p>Eclipses have stirred awe and fear for thousands of years. Before telescopes, ancient people crafted stories to explain the moon’s sudden disappearance and blood-red glow.</p>



<p>“They were looking at the night sky and they had a much brighter vision than we do today,” said historian Zoe Ortiz with the <a href="https://www.unt.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Texas</a>.</p>



<p>Aristotle’s observations of lunar eclipses helped confirm that Earth is round. He noted that Earth’s shadow, whenever it passed over the moon, was always curved. Centuries before space exploration, this simple observation provided undeniable proof of our planet’s shape.</p>



<p>For ancient Mesopotamians, a red moon was not just an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-skies-full-eclipses-transits-exoplanets-know-where-to-look/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">astronomical event</a> - it was a warning. They believed it signaled danger for the king. To protect their ruler, they would place a temporary substitute on the throne, allowing any misfortune to fall upon the stand-in instead.</p>



<p>“If there’s ever a movie plot,” said Ortiz, “that’s the one.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-timeless-spectacle">A timeless spectacle</h2>



<p>Even in an age of space probes and lunar missions, a blood moon remains a sight to behold. </p>



<p>Unlike solar eclipses, which are visible only from narrow paths on Earth, a total lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere the moon is above the horizon.</p>



<p>The upcoming eclipse will transform the sky, giving stargazers a chance to witness something both scientifically explained and deeply mystical. </p>

<p>Genetically predicted height can be linked to the development of certain health conditions, according to new research. The findings suggest that increased height may raise or lower the odds of certain ailments, emphasizing the importance of early check-ups.</p>



<p>The study was led by Dr. Areti Papadopoulou, a postdoctoral research associate at the <a href="https://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit</a>, and Dr. Eirini Marouli, an associate professor in computational biology at Queen Mary University of London.</p>



<p>The experts emphasize that these findings can benefit many people from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-of-ultra-processed-foods-revealed-in-30-year-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">varied backgrounds</a>.</p>

<p>The scientists examined data from six populations of different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-life-expectancy-faces-a-triple-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancestries</a>, and analyzed the DNA factors that govern how tall a person might grow.</p>



<p>This approach, known as a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34982132/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phenome-wide association study</a> (a method that scans a broad set of health outcomes), uncovered a variety of conditions that were linked to a single genetic trait.</p>



<p>The researchers discovered 254 notable links between height and disease. One of the strongest connections was with <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/atrial-fibrillation/what-is-atrial-fibrillation-afib-or-af" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atrial fibrillation</a>. This particular condition, which disrupts normal heart rhythms, appeared more frequently among taller individuals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taking-a-closer-look-at-circulatory-risk">Taking a closer look at circulatory risk</h2>



<p>Height was strongly related to blood vessel and heart <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">issues</a>, with taller people experiencing more problems involving veins and certain arterial conditions.</p>



<p>By one measure, taller people also seemed to have a lower chance of developing <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21656-hyperlipidemia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hyperlipidemia</a> (high fats in the blood) but a higher likelihood of facing specific heart <a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/arrhythmias" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arrhythmias</a>.</p>



<p>Some conditions connected to taller stature were only spotted in one sex or ancestry group. For instance, there was a connection between increased height and lower risk of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK470284/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hyperpotassemia</a> (high potassium levels), but the link was only found in males. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspectives-on-disease-risk">New perspectives on disease risk </h2>



<p>“Our study explored disease-related outcomes in up to 840,000 individuals of European, African, East Asian and Hispanic population groups with genetically predicted height,” explained Dr. Papadopoulou, the first author of the study.</p>



<p>“We report associations with a series of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-takes-a-major-toll-on-childrens-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disorders</a>, involving mental disorders and the endocrine system, that have not been previously associated with genetically predicted height.”</p>



<p>According to Dr. Marouli, the study reveals significant links between genetically predicted height and various health conditions, providing new perspectives on disease risk. </p>



<p>"By analyzing genetic data across diverse ancestries and incorporating sex-specific analyses, we have identified associations that could improve early diagnosis and patient care,” said Dr. Marouli.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-daily-life">What this means for daily life</h2>



<p>Simple measures, like blood pressure readings, might be interpreted more carefully for taller adults, given that some <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCGEN.121.003612" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> points to different cardiac risks by height.</p>



<p>For example, the experts noted that taller men appear less likely to experience high blood pressure but are more prone to heart rhythm disorders.</p>



<p>Screening for conditions such as certain cancers has also been debated in past <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.29159" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> of taller women, especially regarding breast health. The exact reasons for the potential link remain unclear, but the genetic factors that lead to a bigger frame may sometimes coincide with an increased risk for various types of tumors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-managing-risks-across-diverse-groups">Managing risks across diverse groups</h2>



<p>The researchers emphasize that improving health monitoring based on genetically predicted height should not focus on one ancestry alone.</p>



<p>The best strategies come from studies that include everyone, ensuring that recommendations will apply to people from diverse backgrounds and help them <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-one-third-of-asthma-cases-linked-to-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">manage risks</a>.</p>



<p>Health leaders also recognize the importance of routine checkups, such as monitoring blood pressure, which is crucial for spotting early <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/hypertension" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hypertension</a>. With height now becoming a bigger part of the conversation, providers might refine their advice to match each person's unique background and build.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-link-between-height-and-health">The link between height and health</h2>



<p>There is still much to learn about the interplay between height and overall health. By studying the genetic codes of people in different parts of the world, scientists hope to reveal fresh insights that lead to more targeted guidance.</p>

<p>Nature is always changing, sometimes in small but powerful ways. Genetic and brain changes can shape how species behave. A recent study by Nicholas VanKuren and Nathan Buerkle at the <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a> reveals how a simple neural change can shift mating preferences in male butterflies. </p>



<p>The findings show that small brain and sensory changes can quickly alter behavior, helping <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-country-without-butterflies-rapid-decline-in-u-s-populations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> evolve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-butterfly-survival-and-mate-selection">Butterfly survival and mate selection</h2>



<p>Heliconius butterflies, known for their striking wing patterns and colors, use these visual signals as a defense against predators. Their bright hues serve as warnings, signaling toxicity or unpalatability. </p>

What makes a male <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-learn-about-butterflies-day-an-enchanting-world-awaits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">butterfly</a> prefer a female with a particular wing color? </p>



<p>Scientists aimed to uncover the sensory and genetic factors influencing these choices by studying two subspecies of <em>Heliconius cydno</em>, one with yellow patches on its wings and the other with white. </p>



<p>The research has revealed the deep connections between vision, genetics, and behavior in shaping mate selection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-butterfly-mate-choice-and-genetics">Butterfly mate choice and genetics</h2>



<p>To understand the genetic basis of mate preference, the researchers examined the genomes of the butterflies.</p>



<p>They identified four specific genomic regions linked to both wing color and mate selection. One of these, known as the "K locus," had already been associated with similar traits in other <em>Heliconius</em> <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterflies-create-silk-seatbelts-to-strap-in-for-metamorphosis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">butterflies</a>. </p>



<p>This finding suggests a common genetic mechanism influencing both physical traits and behavioral tendencies in these insects.</p>



<p>The team also explored gene expression patterns in different parts of the butterfly’s nervous system, including the retina, optic lobe, and brain.</p>



<p>The researchers found that seven genetic variants were not only located in regions associated with mate preference but were also expressed at different levels in yellow and white males. These variations likely play a direct role in determining which wing color a male butterfly finds attractive.</p>

<p>Beyond genetic factors, the researchers investigated how these butterflies process visual information. </p>

<p>Male <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterfly-migration-habits-are-not-determined-by-their-dna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">butterflies</a> that preferred yellow-winged females had green-sensitive photoreceptors that strongly inhibited the activity of UV-sensitive photoreceptors. This inhibition was significantly weaker in males that did not show the same preference. </p>



<p>This means that a relatively simple modification in the peripheral nervous system alters how butterflies perceive different wing colors, shaping their mate choices.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that mating preferences are not just about detecting certain colors but rather about how the brain processes sensory information. Males are not simply seeing a preferred color more clearly; their nervous systems are wired to find one wing color more attractive than another.</p>

<p>The ability to rapidly alter sensory processing could be a key driver of behavioral evolution in butterflies. </p>

<p>By altering how butterflies perceive potential mates, these neural modifications can contribute to reproductive isolation, eventually leading to the formation of new species.</p>

<p>"Our work generated a striking picture of how a critical visual behavior - mate choice - is controlled, from variation in the connections between neurons in the eye down to genetic variation across the genome," concluded the researchers.</p>

Butterfly mate preferences shift with slight brain changes

<p>Aging is a natural process that affects every living being. From the moment we are born, our bodies begin an intricate journey of growth, repair, and eventual decline. The outward signs of aging—wrinkles, sagging skin, and graying hair—are familiar to everyone. </p>



<p>Yet, the true impact of aging lies deeper, within our very cells. Over time, our DNA and cellular structures experience gradual wear, leading to the changes we associate with getting older.</p>



<p>Some animals have developed ways to temporarily reverse this process. The fat-tailed dwarf lemur of Madagascar is one such example. Researchers at <a href="https://duke.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a> and the <a href="https://www.ucsf.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, San Francisco</a>, have found that this small primate can slow cellular aging during hibernation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-telomeres-in-aging">Role of telomeres in aging</h2>



<p>At the end of each chromosome, tiny caps called telomeres protect genetic material, similar to how plastic tips prevent shoelaces from fraying. </p>



<p>With each cell division, telomeres shorten. Stress, lack of sleep, and inactivity can accelerate this process, leading to cell dysfunction.</p>



<p>Dwarf lemurs, however, have a way to extend their telomeres. A study in Biology Letters suggests that their cells rejuvenate during hibernation, slowing the aging <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-a-protein-that-reverses-cellular-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">process</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-hibernation-affects-aging">How hibernation affects aging</h2>



<p>"When winter sets in in the wild, dwarf lemurs disappear into tree holes or underground burrows, where they spend up to seven months each year in a state of suspended animation," said lead author Marina Blanco of Duke.</p>



<p>This state is a survival strategy during food shortages. Their heart rate drops from 200 beats per minute to fewer than eight, their body temperature falls, and their breathing slows significantly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dwarf-lemurs-telomeres">Dwarf lemurs' telomeres</h2>



<p>To study these effects, researchers at the <a href="https://lemur.duke.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke Lemur Center</a> observed 15 dwarf lemurs before, during, and after hibernation. They monitored changes in telomere length by testing cheek swabs.</p>



<p>To simulate natural conditions, they lowered the temperature gradually and provided artificial burrows. Some lemurs were allowed to eat when awake, while others lived off stored fat, mimicking their wild behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hibernation-reversed-aging-in-lemurs-cells">Hibernation reversed aging in lemurs' cells</h2>



<p>"At first we thought something was off with the data," said researcher Greene.</p>



<p>Genetic sequencing showed that telomeres lengthened rather than shortened during hibernation. UCSF co-author Dana Smith confirmed the findings with Nobel Prize-winning telomere expert Elizabeth Blackburn.</p>



<p>Lemurs that remained in deep torpor had the most significant telomere lengthening, while those that periodically woke to eat saw little change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temporary-but-significant-effects">Temporary but significant effects</h2>



<p>The telomere extension was not permanent. Within two weeks of coming out of hibernation, the lemurs' telomeres returned to their original length.</p>



<p>Researchers believe this lengthening may help counteract <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/defying-time-three-ways-to-slow-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cellular damage</a> from periodic rewarming.</p>



<p>"Like starting a car after it’s been sitting unused in cold weather, these drastic metabolic rev-ups really challenge the body to the extreme, from zero to 100," Greene explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-similar-findings-in-humans">Similar findings in humans</h2>



<p>A comparable telomere extension has been observed in humans under extreme conditions. Astronauts spending a year on the International Space Station and divers living underwater for months have shown similar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organ-aging-can-predict-diseases-decades-in-advance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effects</a>.</p>



<p>By increasing their telomere length, dwarf lemurs may extend the number of times their cells can divide. This could contribute to their long lifespan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-connection-between-aging-and-hibernation">Connection between aging and hibernation</h2>



<p>Dwarf lemurs can live nearly 30 years, twice the lifespan of similar-sized primates like the galago, which does not hibernate.</p>



<p>"Longevity and telomere repair may be linked, but we don't know for sure yet," Blanco said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-human-aging">Implications for human aging</h2>

<p>A new study has found that, contrary to previous claims, the ocean is not a significant source of microplastics to the atmosphere, but rather a major sink.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research team used a global chemical transport model to evaluate how tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, move around the world. </p>



<p>The finding challenges past assumptions about the ocean’s role in releasing plastic fragments into the air.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-journey-of-airborne-microplastics-nbsp">The journey of airborne microplastics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Plastic debris in dust form is increasingly recognized as a worldwide contaminant. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-in-the-brain-alarming-new-details-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Microplastics</a> (particles less than 5 mm in diameter) have been detected in soils, freshwater, the ocean, and even in the air that we breathe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Scientists warn that microscopic plastic bits pose risks for human health, since they can easily enter the respiratory system and the bloodstream.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once airborne, these tiny pieces can travel large distances and eventually settle in remote or sensitive regions, harming wildlife and potentially impacting human populations.</p>



<p>But how do these particles enter the atmosphere in the first place? The planet’s primary sources of microplastics are typically found on land, from everyday materials such as vehicle tires shedding particles on roads, or synthetic clothing fibers washed out in domestic wastewater.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, earlier models had suggested that there might be an additional large source at sea. Microplastics often accumulate in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-pose-a-greater-threat-to-some-ocean-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceans</a>, carried there by rivers and other waterways. Then, once present in the marine environment, it was believed that they could be lofted into the air by sea spray or wind-driven wave action.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-the-ocean-s-contribution">What is the ocean's contribution?</h2>



<p>Prior reports pointing to a large marine source relied on an inverse modeling technique. That method uses atmospheric measurements of particular substances and attempts to infer their origin by matching observed concentrations with predicted distributions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Applied to microplastics, inverse modeling suggested the ocean might contribute hundreds of millions - or even billions - of kilograms of these fragments to the air each year.</p>



<p>Such massive figures were then tested experimentally, with scientists using wave tanks and other controlled setups to see how vigorously wave action or bursting bubbles could transfer plastics from the water surface into the atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Those studies, however, hinted that only tens or hundreds of thousands of kilograms of plastic might plausibly be introduced into the air - orders of magnitude smaller than the figures derived from inverse modeling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-chemical-transport-model">A global chemical transport model</h2>



<p>In an effort to reconcile these contradictory outcomes, a group led by researchers at the <a href="https://mpimet.mpg.de/en/homepage" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Meteorology</a> (MPI-M) ran a global chemical transport model. This computer model simulates the movement of substances, such as microplastic particles, through the atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By prescribing a minor oceanic emission of microplastics - consistent with the low estimates from laboratory work - they were able to predict how microplastic concentrations should appear in the air at various locations around the globe.</p>



<p>The results aligned well with real-world measurements. Based on the model, the ocean in fact took up some of these airborne particles instead of emitting them in large quantities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scientists learned that rather than being a source, the ocean appeared to be a sink, in which 15 percent of all airborne microplastics are deposited.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In other words, waves, spray, and wind may occasionally lift small amounts of plastic out of the sea, but far more of the material is settling onto the water rather than emanating from it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-airborne-microplastics-travel">How airborne microplastics travel</h2>



<p>The study also uncovered the significant influence of particle size on how microplastics travel. Larger plastic fragments drop out of the atmosphere relatively quickly, often landing in coastal areas or not far from their point of emission.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By contrast, smaller particles can remain suspended for up to a year. That extended flight time allows them to cross entire oceans or continents and reach distant regions such as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/citizen-scientists-uncover-microplastics-in-the-remote-arctic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>, where they land on ice or snow.</p>



<p>These discoveries highlight the global character of plastic contamination, showing that microplastic dust can be widespread in places typically considered pristine.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They also clarify that stopping microplastic pollution at its land-based sources may be the most efficient approach, as the ocean itself is neither the greatest emitter nor the root cause.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-roadmap-for-pollution-reduction">A roadmap for pollution reduction</h2>



<p>Given that airborne microplastics reach faraway corners of the planet, the research team’s results have immediate practical value. Any broad plan to cut plastic pollution should focus on terrestrial origins: tire wear on roads, textiles shedding fibers, and insufficiently treated wastewater.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, lessening single-use plastics and improving waste management at landfills can help limit microplastics before they disperse into the environment.</p>



<p>These findings show that ocean waters, already burdened by plastic accumulations, are predominantly sinks - taking in plastic particles from the air. They also emphasize that microplastics do not stay put in the environment: large ones settle nearby, while smaller ones can travel global distances.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Future models aimed at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-pollution-is-changing-the-entire-earth-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic pollution</a> will need to consider these dynamics in more detail, particularly when mapping out strategies to protect vulnerable ecosystems, reduce human exposure, and maintain cleaner oceans.</p>



<p>By settling this debate over whether the ocean is more of a source or a sink, scientists can now direct their attention to mitigating the true origins of airborne microplastics, thus improving targeted policies to help address this pressing environmental concern.</p>

<p>Nearly 90% of adults in the United States believe they must eat meat, dairy, or eggs to get enough protein. This finding comes from a poll of 2,203 people who were surveyed in January 2025, and it highlights the lingering confusion around animal protein and plant-based eating.</p>



<p>Women and Gen Z participants were most likely to push back against the idea that animal products are required for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemp-seeds-could-be-a-game-changer-as-an-alternative-protein-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adequate nutrition</a>. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.pcrm.org/about-us/staff/roxanne-becker" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Roxanne Becker</a>, MBChB, DipIBLM, who is with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, <a href="https://www.pcrm.org/news/news-releases/nearly-90-us-adults-believe-inaccurately-its-important-eat-animal-products-get" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">notes</a> that some consumers still struggle to see how plant foods can match traditional protein sources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-plant-protein-replace-animal-protein">Can plant protein replace animal protein?</h2>



<p>Consumers may worry about protein quality when moving away from animal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-more-plant-protein-lowers-the-risk-of-heart-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a>. One key concern is about whether plant proteins are too low in essential amino acids.</p>



<p>Plant-based proteins are often linked with health perks such as high fiber and reduced levels of unhealthy fats. </p>



<p>They also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that animal products may lack, but the question about adequate essential amino acids remains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-protein-vs-animal-protein">Plant protein vs. animal protein</h2>



<p>“Plant protein has been shown in randomized controlled trials to be as effective as animal protein for building muscle when the amounts of protein are equal. And it is full of nutrients and fiber, unlike animal-based protein sources,” clarified Dr. Becker.</p>



<p>There is strong support from <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10537483/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">controlled trials</a> for the benefits of plant-based eating.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In one <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33599941/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>, men who followed a plant-based dietary plan or an omnivorous plan experienced similar gains in muscle mass when the diet was paired with resistance training. </p>



<p>Similar protein amounts produced comparable results, regardless of the protein source. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-protein-supports-better-aging">Plant protein supports better aging</h2>



<p>Midlife nutrition habits can set the stage for quality of life decades later. An <a href="https://ajcn.nutrition.org/article/S0002-9165(23)66282-3/fulltext#tbl2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">investigation</a> led by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (<a href="https://hsph.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HSPH</a>) suggests that higher intake of plant protein in midlife may support healthy aging in women.</p>



<p>Participants in that study showed better physical and cognitive outcomes over the years when they relied on beans, nuts, and other plant-based staples. </p>



<p>The findings indicate that animal protein may have a few benefits for mobility, but plant protein aligns with improved overall well-being.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-protein-needs">Practical protein needs</h2>



<p>The minimum daily requirement for an adult is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram (0.01 ounces per pound) of body weight. </p>



<p>That’s about 56 grams for a 70-kilogram (2 ounces for a 155-pound) man and 46 grams for a 58-kilogram (1.6 ounces for a 128-pound) woman.</p>



<p>Those who exercise heavily may need up to 2 grams per kilogram (0.07 ounces per pound), especially if they’re doing strength training. </p>



<p>Keeping track of these figures can guide individuals toward balanced dietary choices that nourish muscle growth and support overall health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-maintaining-muscle-with-age">Maintaining muscle with age</h2>



<p>“As we age, it’s important to consume enough protein to maintain our muscle mass so we can avoid frailty. Plant protein sources, which contain no artery-clogging cholesterol and are low in saturated fat, should be the go-to,” said Dr. Becker. </p>



<p>Older adults might lose muscle mass over time, so feeding the body with enough protein is wise.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Many plant-based options are naturally free of animal fats, which can help with <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.117.006659" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart health</a> in the long run. These foods are also linked to lower cholesterol levels.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ways-to-replace-animal-protein">Ways to replace animal protein</h2>



<p>Busy schedules might make it tricky for some people to figure out a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/futuristic-food-supply-transforming-co2-into-protein/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant-friendly</a> menu that supplies adequate protein. </p>



<p>Tofu, beans, lentils, peas, nuts and tempeh are familiar to many who want to load up on muscle-building nutrients without relying on animal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-are-suffering-from-declining-plant-quality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">products</a>.</p>



<p>“Unlike animal-based protein, these foods contain zero cholesterol and tend to be low in saturated fat, making them a smart choice for long-term health. Getting enough protein is as easy as enjoying meals you already know and love,” said Xavier Toledo, a registered dietitian with the Physicians Committee.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wider-acceptance">Wider acceptance</h2>



<p>The survey revealed that more than half of respondents felt it was possible to gain muscle on a plant-based eating plan. </p>



<p>This marks a change from older attitudes that portrayed animal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-changes-in-diet-can-greatly-reduce-your-carbon-footprint/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">protein</a> as the gold standard.</p>



<p>Despite strong acceptance among younger adults, the broader public still lags behind on the facts. That gap could close as research keeps highlighting the flexibility and benefits of plant-based <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-based-meat-less-protein-lacks-certain-nutrients/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diets</a>.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. <p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
