<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>Rivers, lava, and ice carve through landscapes in twisting, meandering channels. At first glance, their bends appear similar. </p>



<p>However, a recent study from researchers at <a href="https://www.utexas.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Texas</a> at Austin reveals that rivers form curves differently than lava or ice channels.</p>



<p>The exact forces shaping these channels remain unclear. However, past research suggests that the interaction between the fluid and the surrounding terrain plays a crucial role. </p>



<p>This study builds on those ideas by analyzing thousands of bends formed by different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shanay-timpishka-river-amazon-rainforest-is-so-hot-that-it-literally-boils-destroying-nearby-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural processes</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-the-river-bends">Science behind the river bends</h2>



<p>In <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-amount-of-water-do-earths-rivers-hold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a>, centrifugal force plays a major role. Water moves faster along the outer edges of a curve and slows down along the inner edges. </p>



<p>This causes erosion on the outer banks while depositing sediment on the inner banks, which gradually intensifies the bends.</p>



<p>Volcanic and ice channels, however, behave differently. These channels erode through melting rather than by carrying and depositing sediments. </p>



<p>Because of this, erosion occurs mainly on the outer edge of a bend, resulting in smaller curves when compared to rivers.</p>



<p>“This distinction sets up a great natural experiment for us to see if the shape, or size, of bends in rivers is distinct from those in volcanic or ice channels,” said Tim Goudge, a co-author on the study and an assistant professor at the <a href="https://www.jsg.utexas.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jackson School of Geosciences</a>, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-beyond-earth">Implications beyond Earth</h2>



<p>This research could help scientists analyze sinuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-rivers-are-shifting-with-global-climate-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">channels</a> on other planets and moons, where the origin of fluids remains uncertain. Without direct access to these channels, their shapes may provide clues about their formation.</p>



<p>The study, published in <em>Geology</em>, was led by Juan Vazquez, who completed his undergraduate degree at the Jackson School in 2024. </p>



<p>He worked alongside Goudge to analyze thousands of bends in rivers on Earth, volcanic channels on the Moon, and ice channels on glaciers.</p>



<p>Vazquez initially believed he had made an error when analyzing the data. However, he soon realized that river bends were significantly more extreme than those of lava and ice.</p>



<p>“It wasn’t until the parameters for the code we had set for the volcanic channels on the Moon kept failing for the rivers on Earth that we realized, ‘Oh, that’s not a fault of the code. It’s an intrinsically different amplitude,’” Vazquez related.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-channel-origins">Identifying channel origins</h2>



<p>The study also found that volcanic and ice channels tend to have a higher proportion of downstream-accentuated bends compared to rivers. </p>



<p>This pattern could help distinguish different types of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planning-for-an-uncertain-future-in-the-colorado-river-basin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">channels</a> on planetary bodies like Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.</p>



<p>On Earth, scientists can observe the fluids or study geological evidence to determine a channel’s origin. </p>



<p>However, on Titan, liquid ethane and methane carve through ice, making it difficult to determine whether channels form like rivers or through melting and dissolution.</p>



<p>Mars presents a similar challenge. Several billion years ago, the planet had flowing rivers and active volcanoes. </p>



<p>Today, sinuous channels appear on the sides of Martian volcanoes. Some scientists believe these formed from lava, while others argue that melting snow created them.</p>



<p>“There are these sinuous channels on the sides of Martian volcanos. Some people have interpreted them as volcanic channels, and some people have interpreted them as rivers that formed when maybe snowpack on the top of the volcano melted,” said Goudge. </p>



<p>“We’re saying that because volcanic channel bends are so distinct, you can measure those channels to find out.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-river-bend-patterns">Future research on river bend patterns</h2>



<p>Goudge cautions that this research should not be seen as a strict rule for identifying the origin of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-of-action-for-rivers-lifelines-of-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">channels</a>. </p>



<p>Natural channels, whether formed by rivers, lava, or ice, can vary widely due to different environmental conditions. Because of this variability, the method may not always provide clear answers.</p>



<p>Before scientists can confidently use these findings to determine whether a channel was created by water, lava, or ice, more data needs to be collected. </p>



<p>Further studies and analysis of additional channels are necessary to confirm the reliability of this approach.</p>



<p>By refining this research, scientists may unlock a new way to study planetary surfaces, helping them to decode the histories of distant worlds.</p>

<p>The Kuiper belt, a distant region of icy bodies beyond Neptune, is home to many celestial wonders. Among them, one particular trio of space rocks has recently caught the attention of scientists.</p>



<p>Cosmic systems involving three orbiting bodies have always challenged astronomers as it is difficult to predict the paths of the three gravitationally bound objects. </p>



<p>Interactions between the gravitational fields of the three bodies tend to lead to chaotic dynamics, which has given rise to the "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finding-order-in-the-chaos-of-the-three-body-problem/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">three-body problem</a>."</p>



<p>The discovery that a previously identified binary system in the Kuiper belt may actually involve three bodies could reshape our understanding of how objects in the Kuiper belt form and evolve.</p>



<p>The research team that have identified the system claim to have found a stable group of three bodies, which is highly unusual but not entirely unheard of. This would marking a significant breakthrough in planetary science.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-astronomers-found">What astronomers found</h2>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.byu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brigham Young University</a> in Provo, Utah, believe they've uncovered the second trio of space rocks ever identified in the Kuiper belt. </p>



<p>If verified, this suggest that there may be other three body systems present. It adds credence to a unique theory on the history of our solar system and the formation of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs).</p>



<p>"The universe is filled with a range of three-body systems, including the closest stars to Earth, the Alpha Centauri star system, and we're finding that the Kuiper belt may be no exception," says the study's lead author, Maia Nelsen, a physics and astronomy graduate of BYU.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-kuiper-belt-objects">What are Kuiper Belt objects?</h2>



<p>Catalogued in 1992, KBOs are primordial icy remains from the very beginnings of our solar system. The belt where these objects are found lies well beyond Neptune's orbit.</p>



<p>To date, scientists have recorded over 3,000 KBOs and predict a possible number in the hundreds of thousands if they include those bigger than 10 miles (16 kilometers) in diameter.</p>



<p>Dwarf planet <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pluto-may-not-be-real-planet-but-has-real-big-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pluto</a> ranks as the biggest KBO.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-formation-of-kuiper-belt-objects">Formation of Kuiper belt objects</h2>



<p>The new Hubble breakthrough offers key insights into a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-snowman-arrokoth-celestial-objects-become-ice-bombs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KBO formation</a> theory in which the three small, rocky bodies would not have formed as the result of collision in the busy Kuiper belt, but rather from the gravitational collapse of matter in the disk of material surrounding the newly formed Sun.</p>



<p>This likely happened around 4.5 billion years ago.</p>



<p>By comparison, stars are known to form by the gravitational collapse of gas, often in pairs or triples. </p>



<p>The notion that celestial bodies in the Kuiper belt form similarly is a fascinating concept that is currently under review.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-the-altjira-system">Insights into the Altjira system</h2>



<p>Located in the outer realms of our solar system, some 44 times the distance between Earth and the Sun, the Altjira System is the subject of this compelling research. </p>



<p>Though two KBOs were seen in Hubble images of this system, scientists now believe the inner object is, in fact, a pair of bodies that appears as one due to their close proximity and their great distance from observers on Earth. </p>



<p>The scientists explain that differentiating the two tiny bodies at such a great distance requires non-imaging methods. </p>



<p>The team monitored the Altjira system over a 17-year period, observing the unique co-orbital movement of the outer object. Over time, they noticed  subtle shift in orbit that was not expected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multiple-hypotheses-for-the-altjira-system">Multiple hypotheses for the Altjira system</h2>



<p>In analyzing the Hubble footage, the team found that the strongest evidence supported the idea of a triple system.</p>



<p>They also considered that the inner object could be a contact binary (two separate bodies so close that they touch each other) or an irregularly flat object reminiscent of a pancake.</p>



<p>Currently, the researchers estimate there are around 40 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mors-somnus-provides-clues-neptune-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">binary objects</a> in the Kuiper belt.</p>



<p>With the discovery of a potential second triple system, it is possible that these systems are not single eccentricities but rather examples of an entire population of three-body systems formed under similar conditions.</p>



<p>Historically, the only KBOs studied in detail are Pluto and the smaller object Arrokoth, which were explored by NASA's New Horizons missions in 2015 and 2019, respectively.</p>



<p>Arrokoth is a contact binary, a pair of objects that have moved ever closer to each other and assumed a peanut shape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>The team describes Altjira as a close relative of Arrokoth, as it hails from the same Kuiper belt group.</p>



<p>They estimate Altjira to be approximately ten times larger though, with a diameter of 124 miles (200 kilometers).</p>



<p>Even though there's no planned mission to see Altjira as closely as Arrokoth was observed, the researchers gleefully await an upcoming opportunity for further study. </p>



<p>Over the next decade, they will get the chance to observe the outer body passing in front of the central body, which will give them a chance to learn more about this intriguing system and other aspects of the <a href="http://arth.com/news/webb-telescope-confirms-hubble-constant-our-understanding-of-universe-expansion-very-wrong/">universe</a></p>



<p>In addition, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will join the study in its upcoming Cycle 3 observations, and it will add new evidence about these three frosted cosmic bodies.</p>

<p>For centuries, Mars has captivated human curiosity, from early astronomers to modern scientists. The Red Planet remains a source of mystery, and with the possibility of human exploration on the horizon, understanding its environment is more crucial than ever.</p>



<p>While its mountains and valleys get much attention, the atmosphere of Mars is just as interesting and complex.</p>



<p>Recent research, including contributions from the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a>, has shed new light on how Mars' atmosphere behaves. Scientists have discovered that atmospheric gravity waves play a crucial role in shaping latitudinal air currents, particularly in the middle and upper layers of the planet’s atmosphere.</p>



<p>This discovery helps us understand <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-seeks-a-faster-way-to-bring-mars-samples-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>' weather better and may also improve climate predictions on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behavior-of-mars-atmosphere">Behavior of Mars' atmosphere </h2>



<p>To grasp the significance of these findings, it is important to understand how Mars' atmosphere differs from our own. </p>



<p>Earth has a thick atmosphere full of nitrogen and oxygen, making it suitable for life. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/detecting-life-on-mars-a-breakthrough-in-space-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>, on the other hand, has very thin air, mostly made of carbon dioxide. This major difference causes Mars' atmosphere to behave in unique ways.</p>



<p>Even though they are different, both planets have air movements caused by their rotation and heat from the Sun. </p>



<p>"On Earth, large-scale atmospheric waves caused by the planet’s rotation, known as Rossby waves, are the primary influence on the way air circulates in the stratosphere, or the lower part of the middle atmosphere," said Professor Kaoru Sato from the Department of Earth and Planetary Science. </p>



<p>"But our study shows that on Mars, gravity waves (GWs) have a dominant effect at the mid and high latitudes of the middle atmosphere."</p>



<p>“Rossby waves are large-scale atmospheric waves, or resolved waves, whereas GWs are unresolved waves, meaning they are too fine to be directly measured or modeled and must be estimated by more indirect means.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-gravity-waves">What are gravity waves?</h2>



<p>Gravity waves are a type of movement in the air. They happen when air moves up and down like waves in the ocean because of differences in air pressure and buoyancy. These waves are different from gravitational waves, which come from space events like black hole collisions.</p>



<p>Since gravity waves are small and hard to see directly, scientists have struggled to measure their effects in Mars' atmosphere. </p>



<p>To solve this problem, Professor Sato and her team used a special dataset called the Ensemble Mars Atmosphere Reanalysis System (<a href="https://www.datacommons.psu.edu/download/meteorology/greybush/emars-1p0/a_landing_page.html#:~:text=EMARS%20uses%20the%20Local%20Ensemble,Sounder%20(MCS)%20temperature%20retrievals." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EMARS</a>). This dataset combines information collected from spacecraft over many years, helping researchers study how these waves influence Mars’ weather and climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-mars-atmosphere">New perspective on Mars' atmosphere</h2>



<p>The study revealed that gravity waves transport angular momentum rapidly, affecting north-south circulation patterns in Mars’ middle atmosphere.</p>



<p>"We found something interesting, that GWs facilitate the rapid vertical transfer of angular momentum, significantly influencing the meridional, or north-south, in the middle atmosphere circulations on Mars," said graduate student Anzu Asumi. </p>



<p>"It’s interesting because it more closely resembles the behavior seen in Earth’s mesosphere rather than in our stratosphere. This suggests existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-collects-26th-rock-sample-on-mars-plans-to-bring-them-all-to-earth-for-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian</a> atmospheric circulation models may need to be refined to better incorporate these wave effects, potentially improving future climate and weather simulations."</p>



<p>This discovery challenges previous assumptions about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>’ atmospheric circulation and highlights the need for updated models. If researchers can refine simulations based on these findings, future climate predictions for Mars will be more accurate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-weather-predictions-on-earth">Improving weather predictions on Earth</h2>



<p>Studying Mars helps scientists learn more about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-year-on-mars-avalanches-icy-explosions-and-the-arrival-of-spring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> works on different planets. </p>

<p>“Looking ahead, we plan to investigate the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/did-mars-once-host-life-we-finally-know-where-to-look/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian</a> dust storms on atmospheric circulation. So far, our analysis has focused on years without major dust storms,” said Sato. </p>



<p>“However, these storms dramatically alter atmospheric conditions, and we suspect they may intensify the role of GWs in circulation. Our research lays the groundwork for forecasting Martian weather, which will be essential for ensuring the success of future Mars missions."</p>



<p>Future studies will examine how these storms on Mars reshape global atmospheric patterns. If scientists can predict these changes with precision, mission planners will be able to prepare astronauts for the planet’s extreme weather. </p>



<p>With each new breakthrough, the dream of reliable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-has-spectacular-glowing-clouds-at-sunset/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian</a> weather forecasting moves closer to reality.</p>

<p>March’s night sky is alive with motion - planets shift, the Moon changes, and Mercury makes a fleeting appearance before disappearing again. </p>



<p>Whether or not you're an avid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/january-2025-stargazing-a-parade-of-bright-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stargazer</a>, March has something extraordinary in store. Some of this month's astronomical events will last weeks - others just minutes. </p>



<p>With skywatching tips from <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/skywatching/whats-up-march-2025-skywatching-tips-from-nasa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, you'll know just what to look for.</p>



<p>The universe keeps changing, whether we watch or not. But if you do take the time, March's night sky will reward you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mercury-at-sunset">Mercury at sunset</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bepicolombo-spacecraft-captures-high-definition-images-of-mercury-during-close-flyby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mercury</a> is a tricky planet to see because it stays close to the Sun. Most of the time, the Sun's brightness hides it, making it one of the hardest planets to spot without a telescope. </p>



<p>However, for a few days in early March, you have a rare chance to see it with your own eyes.</p>



<p>To find Mercury, look towards the western sky about 30 minutes after sunset. It will appear as a tiny bright dot just below <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venus-was-never-capable-of-supporting-life-as-we-know-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Venus</a>. </p>



<p>But don’t wait too long - each night, Mercury moves lower and gets harder to see. By mid-March, it will sink into the Sun’s glare and won’t be visible for months in the night sky.</p>



<p>For the best view, go to a place with a clear horizon, like a beach, an open field, or a hilltop. Trees, buildings, and city lights can block your view, making it even harder to spot. </p>



<p>If you do manage to see Mercury before it disappears, enjoy the moment - because it won’t last long.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-planetary-shuffle">The planetary shuffle</h2>



<p>While Mercury will be tricky to spot, the other planets will have their own stories to tell in March’s night sky.</p>



<p>Venus, the unmistakable “evening star,” will start the month low in the western sky. But its time will be short. Venus will sink lower each night and by mid-March, it will be gone.</p>



<p>Mars, however, will hold its ground. High in the east after sunset, it will linger late into the night, not setting until around 3 a.m. If you stay up past midnight, you will still see its reddish glow overhead.</p>



<p>Jupiter, the giant of our solar system, will dominate the western <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/four-planets-will-align-this-week-during-a-rare-nighttime-spectacle-heres-how-to-see-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sky</a> once night falls. Its bright, steady light will make it one of the easiest planets to spot, even in light-polluted areas.</p>



<p>But like Venus, it will eventually fade, setting around 1 a.m. And when that happens, the morning sky will be planet-free for the first time in a year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-red-moon-in-the-march-sky">Blood-red Moon in the March sky</h2>



<p>And then, there’s the main event - the total lunar eclipse on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venus-mars-and-bodes-galaxy-will-light-up-februarys-night-sky/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">night</a> of March 13th into the 14th.</p>



<p>Unlike a solar eclipse, which requires protective eyewear, this event is safe to watch with your own eyes. No equipment is needed - just step outside, find the Moon, and enjoy the show.</p>



<p>At first, you’ll notice a shadow creeping across its surface, like a slow-moving bite taken out of a cookie. As the eclipse deepens, the Moon won’t vanish - it will turn an eerie, deep red. This crimson is the Earth’s atmosphere at work.</p>



<p>If you were standing on the Moon during the eclipse, you’d see something incredible - a fiery ring around Earth, made up of all the sunrises and sunsets happening at that moment.</p>



<p>That reddish light bends through Earth’s air and spills onto the Moon, giving it the signature blood-red hue.</p>



<p>Then, just as it appeared, the shadow slowly retreats. The deep red hue fades, the darkened edge shrinks, and the Moon regains its usual glow. </p>



<p>Another cycle ends, and another celestial event is etched into the ever-changing story of March's night sky.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-on-the-dark-side-of-the-moon">What’s on the dark side of the Moon?</h2>



<p>The phrase “dark side of the Moon” is a bit misleading. It makes it sound like there’s a half of the Moon that never sees sunlight - an eternal night locked in place. But that’s not the case.</p>



<p>The Moon does have a far side, the part we never see from Earth. This happens because it’s tidally locked, meaning one side always faces us. </p>



<p>But just like Earth, the Moon rotates. Every part of its surface gets bathed in sunlight at some point. There’s no permanent darkness, only the changing light of the lunar day.</p>



<p>The far side of the Moon only faces Earth when the Moon is new. That’s when the Moon is positioned between us and the Sun - so close to the Sun’s light that we can’t see it at all. Unless, of course, there’s a solar eclipse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-optimal-view-of-march-s-night-sky">Optimal view of March's night sky</h2>



<p>March 29th marks the new moon - a night of darkness, and a golden opportunity for stargazers.</p>



<p>Without the Moon’s glare washing out the sky, faint celestial objects suddenly become visible. The Milky Way stretches across the heavens. Distant galaxies, usually hidden, start to emerge. </p>



<p><a href="https://esahubble.org/wordbank/nebula/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nebulae</a>, those swirling clouds of cosmic dust and gas, become easier to photograph.</p>



<p>If you own a telescope, now’s the time to use it. If you don’t, all you really need is a clear, dark sky. Find a spot far from city lights and let your eyes adjust. </p>



<p>March reminds us that the sky is always changing. Mercury appears briefly, then vanishes.</p>



<p>Venus fades away, followed by Jupiter. The Moon transforms into a deep red during the eclipse, only to return to its usual glow. And with the new moon, the night sky reveals sights you may have never noticed before.</p>

<p>The European Space Agency's (ESA) International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (Integral) was launched on October 17, 2002 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Its mission was to observe the extreme and ever-changing cosmos.</p>



<p>“For over two decades, Integral has shown us time and time again how important it is to look at the sky in gamma-ray light,” noted Jan-Uwe Ness, ESA’s Integral <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Integral" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Project</a> Scientist.</p>



<p>“Some of the bursts of light associated with extreme physical events in our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-detect-more-than-20-mysterious-radio-signals-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universe</a> can only be fully understood if we catch the rays that come from the very core of the blasts: the gamma rays.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integral-reveals-cosmic-mysteries">Integral reveals cosmic mysteries</h2>



<p>Unlike visible and radio light, which ground-based telescopes can observe, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-object-discovered-in-space-should-never-have-been-there/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic</a> gamma rays must be captured in space. Earth's atmosphere acts as a shield and protects us from these harmful rays.</p>



<p>“Integral has transformed our understanding of the dynamic, high-energy Universe and physics in extreme conditions,” added Prof. Carole Mundell, <a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a> Director of Science.</p>



<p>“That Integral’s spacecraft and instrumentation have performed so exquisitely well for so many years is testament to the quality of the technology developed by the European scientific community and space industry at the turn of the millennium, and the science and engineering teams at ESA who have operated this mission ever since. Congratulations to all our communities for their dedication and achievements,” Mundell enthused.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integral-helped-explain-powerful-space-explosions">Integral helped explain powerful space explosions</h2>



<p>Integral has played a key role in solving the mysteries of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). These energetic flashes appear in the sky about once per day, often outshining all other gamma-ray sources combined.</p>



<p>Scientists now know that longer GRBs, which last several seconds, result from the collapse of massive stars into supernovae. Shorter bursts happen when neutron stars or black holes collide.</p>



<p>“What I find impressive about Integral are its unexpected discoveries,” remarks Jan-Uwe Ness.</p>



<p>“It turned out that Integral was ideal for tasks not at all foreseen when the mission was conceived. An example is its ability to track down the sources in the sky that generated some of the gravitational waves and ultrahigh-energy neutrinos caught by specialised instruments on the ground.”</p>



<p>When Integral launched, scientists were unsure whether gravitational waves could ever be directly detected. The first confirmed observation came 13 years later, in 2015, by the LIGO detectors in the U.S.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discoveries-that-shaped-astronomy">Discoveries that shaped astronomy</h2>



<p>Integral’s breakthroughs continued. Just in the past two years, it captured the most powerful gamma-ray burst ever observed. The blast even affected Earth’s protective ozone layer.</p>



<p>“This GRB took place in a galaxy almost two billion light-years away – it is mind-boggling to think that Earth can be affected by an event that took place in a remote corner of the Universe, two billion years ago,” marveled Ness.</p>

<p>Recent discoveries also include a rare 0.1-second magnetar outburst, which emitted as much energy as the Sun produces in half a million years. Integral also found that thermonuclear explosions power jets in a neutron star.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-pioneering-observatory">A pioneering observatory</h2>



<p>At the time of its launch, Integral was the most advanced gamma-ray observatory available. It was the first space-based observatory capable of observing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-tiny-red-spots-discovered-in-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial objects</a> in gamma rays, X-rays, and visible light simultaneously.</p>



<p>Three features made Integral’s discoveries possible: its large field of view, its ability to capture detailed images and spectra at high energies, and its monitoring capability with X-ray and optical cameras. These elements helped pinpoint gamma-ray sources with unprecedented precision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-final-chapter">The final chapter</h2>



<p>“After 2886 orbits and 22 years gazing into the depths of our cosmos, today Integral’s sensitive instruments will stop collecting scientific data. But the legacy of ESA’s gamma-ray observatory will serve scientists for many more years to come,” concluded Matthias Ehle, Integral’s Mission Manager at ESA.</p>



<p>&nbsp;“The wealth of data collected over two decades will be stored at the Integral Science Legacy Archive. It will be essential for future research and to inspire a new generation of astronomers and engineers to develop exciting new missions.”</p>



<p>The scientists adjusted Integral's orbit in 2015 so that it would gradually move into a position to ensure a safe re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, in early 2029. This aligns with the ESA's commitment to reducing  <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-cosmic-explosion-changes-what-we-know-about-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space</a> debris. </p>



<p>During the next four years, ESA engineers will monitor the spacecraft, even though its scientific operations will have ceased. </p>



<p>Integral’s mission may be ending, but its impact on high-energy astrophysics will endure for generations.</p>

<p>Butterflies are currently disappearing in the United States with alarming speed. A new study estimates that overall butterfly abundance in the continental United States dropped by 22% between 2000 and 2020. </p>



<p>Researchers warn that without immediate action, these vibrant insects - essential for pollination, nutrient cycling, and food webs - could continue to vanish at a rate with unsettling consequences for ecosystems and agriculture alike.</p>



<p>“Action must be taken,” said Elise Zipkin, a professor of quantitative ecology at <a href="https://msu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michigan State University</a> and a co-author of the paper. “To lose 22 percent of butterflies across the continental U.S. in just two decades is distressing and shows a clear need for broad-scale conservation interventions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-largest-ever-compilation-of-butterfly-data"><strong>Largest-ever compilation of butterfly data</strong></h2>



<p>In the past, scientists have typically focused on one species (like the monarch) or on a limited geography. This study, however, brings together more than 76,000 surveys of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grassland-butterflies-declining-all-over-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">butterfly populations</a> spanning the lower 48 states.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers incorporated data from 35 separate monitoring programs and compiles records of over 12.6 million butterflies, enabling analysts to develop a nationwide snapshot of butterfly abundance trends and species richness.</p>



<p>To clarify changes, the research team examined 554 different species, comparing population sizes in 2000 with those in 2020. They discovered that for every five butterflies present at the start of the century, only four remained after two decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The average annual decline of 1.3% highlights the widespread nature of the downturn, with fewer butterflies appearing in backyards, open meadows, and nearly everywhere in between.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-decline-of-butterflies"><strong>Increasing decline of butterflies</strong></h2>



<p>Nick Haddad, a professor of integrative biology at Michigan State and one of the study’s co-authors, has been closely involved in charting the precarious state of U.S. butterflies. He combines scientific expertise with a practical, on-the-ground perspective.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While many declines involve species we rarely encounter, Haddad stresses that losses can also be noticed close to home.</p>



<p>“My neighbors notice it,” Haddad said. “Unprompted, they’ll say, ‘I’m seeing fewer butterflies in my garden, is that real?’ My neighbors are right. And it’s so shocking.”</p>



<p>Such observations confirm broader findings: average people are detecting changes in butterfly abundance without relying on official numbers. Now, large-scale data affirm that this anecdotal evidence reflects a genuine, countrywide shift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-definitive-study-on-u-s-butterflies"><strong>The definitive study on U.S. butterflies</strong></h2>



<p>“This is the definitive study of butterflies in the U.S.,” said Collin Edwards, the study’s lead author. “For those who were not already aware of insect declines, this should be a wake-up call.”</p>



<p>“We urgently need both local- and national-scale conservation efforts to support butterflies and other insects. We have never had as clear and compelling a picture of butterfly declines as we do now.”</p>



<p>Edwards, formerly a postdoctoral research associate at <a href="https://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington State University, Vancouver</a>, now works with the <a href="https://wdfw.wa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He and his colleagues designed methods to integrate sometimes-variable data sets. By analyzing changes in “butterfly abundances, they aimed to see how species fared individually, regionally, and collectively.</p>



<p>Though the Pacific Northwest seemed to buck the national trend by showing a 10% overall gain in butterfly numbers, that apparent uptick is traced mainly to a single species, the California tortoiseshell, which had a population spike unlikely to last.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Elsewhere, the standard pattern of decline holds true, demonstrating that the national losses are part of a deeper, multi-regional shift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-need-for-solutions"><strong>Urgent need for solutions</strong></h2>



<p>By studying 554 species, the team highlights just how widespread the problem is. Many species had never been systematically analyzed at such a scale. The numbers show that 13 times more species declined than increased, with 107 species losing over half their populations.</p>



<p>According to Zipkin and Haddad, butterflies are more than fluttering symbols of freedom and beauty. They serve as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urban-expansion-linked-to-global-decline-of-wild-pollinators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> - alongside bees and flies - supporting a portion of the country’s agriculture and a source of food for numerous animals, including birds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Indeed, bird populations have dropped by nearly three billion over the last 50 years, at a rate that parallels butterfly declines.</p>



<p>The researchers highlight that policymakers and the public should view these insects not just as ornaments but as key contributors to ecological balance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If butterflies continue to disappear, pollination services may weaken, predator-prey relationships will be altered, and many plants reliant on butterfly pollination could suffer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-past-findings-nbsp"><strong>Lessons from past findings&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Haddad’s earlier work, published in 2024 in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0304319" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>PLOS ONE</em></a>, determined that insecticide use was a leading cause of butterfly mortality. Although habitat destruction and climate change are also major factors, the findings suggest that widespread pesticide application does extraordinary harm.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Profligate use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterfly-decline-in-american-midwest-linked-to-insecticides/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insecticides</a> - often deployed as a sort of “insurance” by farmers - can, ironically, result in minimal gains in crop yields while doing maximum damage to insect populations.</p>



<p>Haddad believes that a shift to more strategic, evidence-based pesticide use would give many butterfly species a fighting chance to rebound.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slowing-the-decline-of-butterflies"><strong>Slowing the decline of butterflies </strong></h2>



<p>Zipkin describes the current data as a strong warning to national leaders: “People depend on plants, microbes, and animals for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Yet, we are losing species at rates that rival the major mass extinction events on our planet,” she said.</p>



<p>Zipkin said that the United States can take meaningful steps, from local habitat management to large-scale legislative action, to protect not just butterflies but the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> that underpins human health and well-being.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Edwards hopes individuals and local governments will commit resources to planting pollinator-friendly vegetation, curtailing pesticide use, and supporting land conservation measures.</p>



<p>While time is short, the researchers remain cautiously optimistic: the data highlight just how urgent the task is, but it also provides a roadmap for remedying the losses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Through improved policy, targeted restoration programs, and mindful insecticide management, the decline of these “fluttering symbols” might be slowed, or even reversed - restoring butterflies to gardens, fields, and wildlands across the nation.</p>

<p>Imagine biting into a juicier, tastier tomato or cooking with an eggplant that’s not just flavorful but also larger. Scientists have made a discovery that could bring this to reality by identifying genes that control fruit size.</p>



<p>Researchers at Johns Hopkins University (<a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JHU</a>) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (<a href="https://www.cshl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CSHL</a>) have mapped genetic sequences in tomatoes and eggplants, paving the way for the development of new, improved varieties.</p>



<p>Their findings, published in <em>Nature</em>, could transform agriculture, particularly in regions where local varieties are too small to support commercial production.</p>

<p>Gene modification for plants is basically science giving nature a little upgrade. Scientists tweak plant DNA to make crops stronger, more nutritious, or resistant to pests and harsh weather. </p>



<p>Instead of waiting generations for traditional breeding to get the perfect traits, genetic engineering speeds up the process. </p>



<p>For example, some modified crops can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-populations-dramatically-declining-around-the-world-rising-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fight off insects</a> without needing pesticides, while others grow in salty soil or survive droughts. </p>



<p>In this instance, modifying the genes of tomato plants will provide bigger and better tomatoes.</p>



<p>This tech has already changed farming, making it more efficient and reducing the need for chemical sprays that can harm the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-agriculture-with-one-seed">Changing agriculture with one seed</h2>



<p>“Once you’ve done the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boosting-crop-colors-with-gene-editing-can-improve-weed-control/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gene editing</a>, all it takes is one seed to start a revolution,” said Michael Schatz, a geneticist at Johns Hopkins University and co-lead author of the study. </p>



<p>“With the right approvals, we could mail an engineered seed to Africa or anywhere it’s needed and open up entirely new agricultural markets. There’s huge potential to translate these advances into real-world impact.”</p>



<p>The study is part of a larger initiative to map the full genomes of 22 crop plants within the nightshade family, which includes tomatoes, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crops-of-the-future-potatoes-that-thrive-in-heatwaves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potatoes</a>, and eggplants.</p>



<p>The researchers used computational analysis to compare genetic maps and track how genes evolved. They discovered that, over time, more than half of these genes had been duplicated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-genetic-changes-over-time">Tracing genetic changes over time</h2>



<p>“Over tens of millions of years, there’s this constant churn of DNA sequences being added and lost,” Schatz explained. </p>



<p>“The same process can occur for gene sequences, where entire genes duplicate or disappear. When we started looking, we noticed these changes were very widespread, but we didn’t yet know what those changes meant for the plants.”</p>



<p>To answer that question, researchers at the Boyce Thomson Institute used CRISPR-Cas9 technology to edit these genes. Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor then grew the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/engineered-gmo-plants-make-baby-formula-healthy-as-breast-milk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">engineered plants</a> to observe the results.</p>



<p>The duplicated genes, known as paralogs, turned out to be essential for traits like fruit size, shape, and flowering time. </p>



<p>One experiment involved turning off both copies of a gene called CLV3 in the forest nightshade, a plant native to Australia. </p>



<p>The result was that misshapen, “weird, bubbly, disorganized” fruits were formed. These wouldn’t be viable for grocery stores. However, tweaking just one copy of the gene led to plants with larger fruits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-treasure-map-for-tomatoes">Genetic treasure map for tomatoes</h2>



<p>“Having full genome sequences for these species is like having a new treasure map,” said Katharine Jenike, who helped assemble the genome sequences as a Ph.D. student in Schatz’s lab.</p>



<p>“We can see where and when one genetic path diverges from another and then explore that place in the genetic information where we wouldn’t have thought to look. This allowed us to find the size-genes in a really unexpected place.”</p>



<p>One of the most exciting discoveries came from the African eggplant, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/engineered-plant-microbiomes-the-future-of-crop-protection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crop</a> grown across Africa and Brazil. Scientists identified a gene, SaetSCPL25-like, which controls the number of seed cavities, or locules, inside the fruit. </p>



<p>When they edited this gene in tomatoes, they found that increasing the number of locules resulted in larger tomatoes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tomatoes-eggplants-and-genes">Tomatoes, eggplants, and genes</h2>



<p>These findings suggest that careful gene editing could lead to larger, more commercially viable tomatoes and eggplants.</p>



<p>“This work shows the importance of studying many species together. We leveraged decades of work in tomato genetics to rapidly advance African eggplants, and along the way we found entirely new genes in African eggplants that reciprocally advance tomatoes," Schatz explained.</p>



<p>"We call this ‘pan-genetics,’ and it opens endless opportunities to bring many new fruits, foods, and flavors to dinner plates around the world.”</p>



<p>With continued research and the right regulatory steps, these discoveries could change how we grow and consume some of our favorite fruits and vegetables in the years ahead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-tomato-plants-and-gene-editing">Future of tomato plants and gene editing</h2>



<p>Beyond simply increasing fruit size, this research has broader implications for global agriculture. </p>



<p>In many parts of the world, farmers struggle with low-yield crops that are not suitable for large-scale farming. </p>



<p>With gene editing, scientists could tailor plants to specific environments, making them more resistant to climate change, pests, and diseases.</p>



<p>By using advanced genetic tools, researchers hope to create crops that not only grow larger but also require fewer resources, such water and fertilizers.</p>



<p>This could make <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mixed-cover-crops-may-be-the-future-of-sustainable-farming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">farming more sustainable</a> and reduce environmental impacts.</p>



<p>Future studies may focus on improving taste, nutritional value, and shelf life, which would ensure that these new varieties don’t just benefit farmers but also provide better food options for consumers.</p>

Gene modification can create bigger, better tomatoes, but should we do it?

Imagine biting into a juicier, tastier tomato or cooking with...

<p>A planet’s orbit defines its movement around a star. Earth follows a nearly circular orbit, but exoplanets often take different paths. Some have very elongated orbits, while others resemble Earth’s circular pattern. </p>



<p>UCLA astrophysicists have now measured the orbits of exoplanets, from Jupiter-sized to Mars-sized, and found an interesting trend. </p>



<p>Smaller planets tend to have nearly circular orbits, while larger planets follow more elliptical paths. This suggests that large and small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-images-of-baby-planets-reveal-surprising-growth-spurts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a> may form in different ways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bigger-planets-with-different-orbits">Bigger planets with different orbits</h2>



<p>“What we found is that right around the size of Neptune, planets go from being almost always on circular orbits to very often having elliptical orbits,” said <a href="https://www.ucla.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> postdoctoral researcher Gregory Gilbert, who led the study.</p>



<p>The research team analyzed data from NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/kepler/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kepler telescope</a>. This telescope observed 150,000 stars and detected exoplanets by measuring dips in brightness as they passed in front of their stars. </p>



<p>These brightness patterns, called light curves, revealed new details about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/four-planets-will-align-this-week-during-a-rare-nighttime-spectacle-heres-how-to-see-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary orbits</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-challenge-of-measuring-planet-orbits">The challenge of measuring planet orbits </h2>



<p>One of the biggest hurdles was ensuring accurate modeling for all 1,600 light curves.</p>



<p>"If stars behaved like boring light bulbs, this project would have been 10 times easier," said Erik Petigura, a UCLA professor of physics and astronomy. </p>



<p>"But the fact is that each star and its collection of planets has its own individual quirks, and it was only after we got eyes on each one of these light curves that we trusted our results."</p>



<p>This is where UCLA undergraduate Paige Entrican played a crucial role. She developed a specialized visualization tool and manually inspected every light curve.</p>



<p>"Reviewing the data was a meticulous process that required careful inspection of all data products to ensure the validity of our results," said Entrican.</p>



<p>"Several times during this project, I identified failure modes that only affected 1% of all our stars. But we needed to update our analysis to be robust to these issues and go back and reprocess the entire data set."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-formation-processes-of-planets">Formation processes of planets</h2>



<p>The divide between circular and elliptical orbits aligns with other known patterns in exoplanet studies. Gilbert noted that small planets are more common than giant planets.</p>



<p>"Large planets need metal-rich stars in order to form; small planets do not. Small planets have low eccentricities, and large planets have large eccentricities," said Gilbert. </p>



<p>The connection between planet size, orbit shape, and star composition suggests two different formation processes for planets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-planets-take-shape">How planets take shape</h2>



<p>Scientists believe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-a-hidden-planet-in-kepler-51-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a> start as small space rocks that collide and merge over time. </p>



<p>If a growing planet reaches a certain size, it can capture large amounts of hydrogen and helium, turning into a gas giant like Jupiter or Saturn. However, planets larger than Neptune are rare. </p>



<p>The growth of a giant planet requires a process called runaway accretion, where gas accumulation accelerates dramatically. This can only happen around stars with high levels of elements heavier than helium.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-planets-with-elliptical-orbits">Planets with elliptical orbits</h2>



<p>Larger planets with elliptical orbits indicate a more chaotic formation history. These planets likely experienced strong gravitational interactions that disrupted their paths. </p>



<p>Eccentric giant planets may have also influenced their neighbors, triggering major impacts like the one that formed Earth’s moon. In exoplanet systems, such collisions could involve planets much larger than Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tribute-to-kepler">A tribute to Kepler</h2>



<p>“It's remarkable what we've been able to learn about the orbits of planets around other stars using the Kepler Space Telescope,” said Petigura.</p>



<p>“The telescope was named after Johannes Kepler, who, four centuries ago, was the first scientist to appreciate that the planets in our solar system move on slightly elliptical rather than circular orbits. </p>



<p>“His discovery was an important moment in human history because it showed that the sun, rather than the Earth, was at the center of the solar system. I’m sure Kepler, the man, would be delighted to learn that a telescope named in his honor measured the subtle shapes of orbits of Earth-size planets around other stars.”</p>



<p>This study marks a significant step in understanding how planets form and evolve. The differences in orbit shape between small and large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-85-new-exoplanets-that-could-harbor-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exoplanets</a> provide new clues about their origins. </p>



<p>With ongoing research and advanced telescopes, scientists will continue uncovering the mysteries of planetary formation.</p>

Planets seem to have hidden patterns in their solar orbits, according to a new study

<p>Earth has experienced numerous powerful space events that have changed its surface. Some of the most significant were meteorite crashes, which may have played a key role in shaping the planet and potentially supporting early life. </p>



<p>Scientists know that Earth was hit by many meteorites, but most impact craters disappeared over time.</p>



<p>A team of scientists from Curtin University has found the oldest known meteorite impact crater in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. </p>



<p>This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-insight-mro-spacecraft-teamed-up-with-ai-to-find-a-fresh-impact-crater/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crater</a> is over a billion years older than any other confirmed impact site. The discovery helps us understand what Earth was like billions of years ago and raises new questions about how meteorite crashes might have helped create the right conditions for life to begin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-oldest-impact-crater">Earth’s oldest impact crater</h2>



<p>Scientists studied the rocks in the area and found special patterns called shatter cones. These cone-shaped marks only form when a huge meteorite crashes into the ground, creating intense pressure. Because of this, shatter cones are considered to be solid evidence of a meteorite impact.</p>



<p>The site is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Marble Bar in Western Australia. The evidence suggests that a giant meteorite hit this spot at a speed of around 36,000 kilometers per hour (22,400 miles per hour). </p>



<p>This impact would have created a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nadir-crater-second-massive-asteroid-impact-discovered-dinosaur-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crater</a> more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide and thrown debris across the planet.</p>



<p>Professor Tim Johnson from <a href="https://www.curtin.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Curtin University</a> emphasized the significance of the discovery.</p>



<p>“Before our discovery, the oldest impact crater was 2.2 billion years old, so this is by far the oldest known crater ever found on Earth,” said Professor Johnson.</p>



<p>Scientists have been puzzled by the lack of very old impact craters on Earth, while the Moon still has many. This study helps connect the missing pieces, showing how these meteorite crashes may have shaped Earth’s early history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meteorites-and-early-microbial-life">Meteorites and early microbial life</h2>



<p>Meteorite impacts may have played a role in the origins of life by creating environments suitable for microbial activity. The intense heat and geological disruption could have led to the formation of hydrothermal pools, similar to those known to support early microbial life.</p>



<p>Professor Chris Kirkland explained how this discovery deepens our knowledge of Earth’s past.</p>



<p>“Uncovering this impact and finding more from the same time period could explain a lot about how life may have got started, as impact craters created environments friendly to microbial life such as hot water pools,” said Professor Kirkland.</p>



<p>The meteorite crash may have helped form some of Earth’s first solid land. The impact released an enormous amount of energy, which could have caused parts of the Earth’s crust to move. </p>



<p>This might have pushed some areas down and forced hot, melted rock from deep inside the Earth to rise to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-impact-carved-massive-canyons-on-the-moon-in-minutes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surface</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-search-for-hidden-impact-craters">The search for hidden impact craters</h2>



<p>Scientists have wondered why no craters older than 2.2 billion years were found. Natural forces like erosion and earthquakes may have erased them. </p>



<p>But this discovery shows that some ancient craters might still exist in areas where rocks have stayed well-preserved.</p>



<p>The North Pole Dome is one of the few places where Earth's ancient crust remains mostly unchanged. Studying it gives scientists a rare look at what the planet was like billions of years ago. Finding this impact crater may inspire more research in other similar areas around the world.</p>



<p>Professor Johnson highlighted how this finding changes our perspective on Earth’s impact history.</p>



<p>“This study provides a crucial piece of the puzzle of Earth's impact history and suggests there may be many other ancient craters that could be discovered over time.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-violent-history">Earth’s violent history</h2>



<p>The study challenges previous assumptions about Earth’s early development. The impact may have played a role in forming cratons - large, stable landmasses that became the foundation of today’s continents.</p>



<p>If more impact craters from this period are identified, they could refine theories about early Earth’s geological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-mars-rocks-contain-signs-of-life-scientists-call-to-bring-them-back-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a>.</p>



<p>This discovery shows that Earth’s early history was more violent than we once thought. Meteorite crashes didn’t just change the land - they may have also affected the planet’s interior and helped create conditions for life.</p>

<p>Earthquakes can cause widespread loss of life and property, so reliable forecasts remain a global priority. Heat-related factors might influence seismic activity, making accurate predictions crucial for timely evacuations. Yet, many aspects of earthquake behavior remain puzzling.</p>



<p>Shifts in <a href="https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/plate-tectonics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tectonic plates</a> and the buildup of strain energy typically drive these events. However, some researchers believe solar heat might also play a part in the bigger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-linked-to-nearby-oil-extraction-fracking-sites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic picture</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-solar-heat-influence-earthquakes">Can solar heat influence earthquakes?</h2>



<p>These ideas have gained attention thanks to new work by Matheus Henrique Junqueira Saldanha from the <a href="https://www.tsukuba.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tsukuba</a> and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (<a href="https://www.aist.go.jp/index_en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AIST</a>) in Japan.</p>



<p>In a recent project, Saldanha and collaborators looked at how fluctuations in <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/world-of-change/Solar" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar activity</a> could alter Earth’s surface temperature in ways that influence crustal conditions.</p>



<p>Temperature swings are thought to affect the brittleness of rocks, especially in upper layers. Changes in brittleness may not singlehandedly trigger large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquake-activity-will-increase-due-to-glacial-retreat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earthquakes</a>, but heat fluctuations could add subtle strain in locations that are already under stress.</p>



<p>Scientists suspect that water infiltration can shift local pressures as well. Rainfall, snowmelt, and other seasonal factors might raise or lower tension around fault lines, contributing to how cracks form or expand near the surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-changes-may-trigger-earthquakes">Heat changes may trigger earthquakes</h2>



<p>Atmospheric temperature can modify underground water circulation. This movement can add or reduce stress on faults, which could be important when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quakes</a> are near the upper crust.</p>



<p>Certain <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1103961" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> have explored connections between the sun, moon, and Earth’s internal processes. Tidal forces and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1674862X20300203" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electromagnetic fluctuations</a> often steal the spotlight, yet solar heating is a different angle that brings seasonal and regional temperature changes into the conversation.</p>



<p>Experts note that any effect of temperature might be minor compared to major tectonic shifts. Even so, small contributions can accumulate over <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/geologic-time" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">geologic timescales</a>. Many quakes happen without a single “smoking gun,” so every factor is worth examining.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-at-subtle-signals">A closer look at subtle signals</h2>



<p>Hidden correlations between heat and  can be difficult to detect. Small quakes often go unnoticed, but they offer useful data about how the Earth’s crust responds to environmental changes.</p>



<p>A magnitude 9.0 event, like the 2011 <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/official20110311054624120_30" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tōhoku earthquake</a>, caused catastrophic impacts and showed the limits of current forecasting methods. Even if solar heating only provides a slight improvement in forecast models, that could make a difference for vulnerable areas.</p>



<p>Detecting these small influences involves gathering data from different regions and comparing it with solar records. Scientists look for consistent patterns over time, checking if heat variations and temperature fluctuations align with changes in earthquake frequency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-earthquake-forecasting">Improving earthquake forecasting</h2>



<p><a href="https://scienceexchange.caltech.edu/topics/earthquakes/earthquakes-probabilities" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Forecasting</a> improvements often start with a close look at fault mechanics and strain buildup, as well as historical quake records. Some regions have more detailed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-map-shows-75-percent-of-the-u-s-at-risk-of-damaging-earthquakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic histories</a> than others, which helps refine mathematical models.</p>



<p>Adding solar-based temperature inputs could sharpen the accuracy of those models. Subtle spikes in heat might signal shifts in rock stability, especially for shallow earthquakes that depend more on heat-related conditions in the top layers of Earth.</p>



<p>A more precise forecast would not mean pinpointing the exact day of a quake. Instead, it might reduce uncertainty for the next few weeks or months, giving local authorities another tool to weigh when organizing preparedness plans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-heat-and-seismic-activity">Solar heat and seismic activity</h2>



<p>“Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties and underground water movement,” said Saldanha. Solar heating alone is not a dominant driver of seismic systems, yet it may still tip the balance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These fluctuations can change how rocks fracture, especially if faults are already close to slipping. Even tiny changes in pressure might determine whether stored energy is released over days or years.</p>



<p>“It’s an exciting direction, and we hope our study sheds some light on the bigger picture of what triggers earthquakes,” said Saldanha. Incorporating solar data could reveal patterns that slip through the cracks in purely plate-based analyses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-wider-view-of-seismic-risk">A wider view of seismic risk</h2>



<p>A multidisciplinary approach to earthquake forecasting considers water, temperature, and stress accumulation. Combining these elements can highlight new signals that standard tectonic models might overlook, potentially linking heat variations to earthquake <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-earthquake-changed-the-course-of-the-ganges-river/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activity</a>.</p>



<p>Greater collaboration with climatologists and hydrologists could strengthen quake forecasts. Areas prone to shifts in rainfall or snowmelt might see extra stress on faults, which ties into the temperature-driven processes that Saldanha’s team is studying.</p>



<p>Some experts remain cautious, emphasizing that tectonic motion will always be the main culprit behind earthquakes. Yet they also acknowledge that no single factor explains every quake, so exploring the effects of temperature could add clarity.</p>

<p>For centuries, archaeologists have pieced together the story of early humans - one artifact at a time. Stone tools, with their sharp edges and deliberate craftsmanship, have offered the clearest window into the minds of our ancient ancestors. But now, the discovery of bone <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tools</a> has challenged this long-held narrative.</p>



<p>A new study from UCL and the CSIC-Spanish National Research Council reveals something astonishing: early humans were capable of advanced reasoning a million years earlier than previously believed. And the proof? Bone tools - some of the oldest ever found.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oldest-bone-tools">Oldest bone tools </h2>



<p>The study describes 27 fossilized bones that were shaped into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tools</a> approximately 1.5 million years ago. This collection marks the earliest known instance of systematically produced bone tools, pushing back the timeline of advanced tool use.</p>



<p>Early human ancestors, called hominins, had been making stone tools for at least a million years. But until now, scientists believed that the regular use of bone tools only started around 500,000 years ago.</p>



<p>The recent discovery challenges this understanding, showing that these ancient ancestors were skilled in working with multiple materials.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bone-tools-prove-advanced-thinking">Bone tools prove advanced thinking</h2>



<p>The newly found bone <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-discovery-challenges-entire-theory-of-human-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tools</a> were shaped using a technique similar to stone knapping. Hominins chipped away small flakes to create sharp edges, demonstrating an ability to adapt and transfer skills between different materials. </p>



<p>This suggests that early humans possessed a greater cognitive capacity than previously assumed.</p>



<p>“The tools show evidence that their creators carefully worked the bones, chipping off flakes to create useful shapes. We were excited to find these bone tools from such an early timeframe,” noted Dr. Renata F. Peters from <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL Archaeology</a>.</p>



<p>”It means that human ancestors were capable of transferring skills from stone to bone, a level of complex cognition that we haven’t seen elsewhere for another million years.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-humans-used-more-than-just-stone">Early humans used more than just stone</h2>



<p>“This discovery leads us to assume that early humans significantly expanded their technological options, which until then were limited to the production of stone tools and now allowed new raw materials to be incorporated into the repertoire of potential artifacts,” noted lead researcher Dr. Ignacio de la Torre (<a href="http://www.csic.es/en/csic" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CSIC</a>-Spanish National Research Council).</p>



<p>The shift to making tools shows that early humans were smart enough to use their stone-making skills on other materials. This was a big step forward in how they created and used <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/400000-year-old-stone-tools-show-technological-adaptations-of-prehistoric-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tools</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-at-olduvai-gorge">Discovery at Olduvai Gorge</h2>



<p>The tools were found in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, a famous place where many important discoveries about early humans have been made. The experts uncovered 27 bone tools, mostly from big animals like elephants and hippos.</p>



<p>These tools were made from the strongest parts of the animals - the thick bones in their legs - showing that early humans carefully chose the best material.</p>



<p>The bone <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-lived-in-rainforests-80000-years-earlier-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tools</a> come from a time when early human ancestors were improving how they made tools. </p>



<p>Before this, during the Oldowan age (which lasted from about 2.7 million to 1.5 million years ago), they mainly used simple stone tools by chipping off small pieces to create sharp edges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-shift-in-toolmaking">A shift in toolmaking</h2>



<p>The Acheulean age began about 1.7 million years ago. At this time, early humans started making more advanced stone tools.</p>



<p>The discovery of shaped bone tools suggests early humans used their skills on more than just stone.</p>



<p>Before this discovery, bone tools were rare and found only in isolated cases. There was no proof that early humans were making them regularly. But these new findings show that hominins may have been using bone tools much earlier and more widely than scientists previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-bone-tools">Mystery of bone tools</h2>



<p>The exact purpose of these bone tools remains uncertain. Their shape, size, and sharp edges suggest they may have been used to process animal carcasses for food. However, no direct evidence confirms their specific function.</p>



<p>It is also unclear which hominin species crafted these tools. No fossilized remains were found alongside the collection. At the time, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei were known to inhabit the region, making them the likely candidates.</p>



<p>Since finding these bone tools was so surprising, scientists hope their discovery will encourage archaeologists to look back at old excavation sites. There’s a chance that other similar tools were found before but not recognized as important.</p>



<p>This research was funded by the European Research Council (ERC) to help scientists learn more about how early humans developed their thinking and technology.</p>

<p>Scientists have long studied how desert plants adapt to extreme conditions. Now, a study using advanced imaging techniques has uncovered deeper insights into the agave’s survival mechanisms.</p>



<p>The researchers used special imaging technology to see how agave plants store and use water. They found that these plants keep moisture at both the leaf and tiny molecular levels. This discovery could help create <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-earths-most-endangered-plants-from-extinction-proving-difficult-botanic-gardens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crops</a> that need less water and improve how processed foods stay fresh.</p>



<p>The results not only highlight the resilience of agave plants but also point to potential solutions for global food security in the face of climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-agave-hydration-levels">Analyzing agave hydration levels</h2>



<p>The scientists used terahertz spectroscopy, a non-invasive technique that falls between microwave and mid-infrared technologies, to analyze the hydration levels of agave <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-may-stop-absorbing-carbon-if-temperatures-continue-to-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a>.</p>



<p>This method allows researchers to map water distribution within plant tissues and observe how fructans, a type of sugar, help retain moisture at the molecular level.</p>



<p>“Understanding how plants adapt to dry conditions could lead to better farming practices and be used to develop crops that require less water,” said Monica Ortiz-Martinez from the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica (<a href="https://www.cio.mx/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CIO</a>) in Mexico.</p>



<p>“This could lead to higher crop yields with lower water consumption, benefiting farmers, food production and global food security.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-plant-hydration-levels">Measuring plant hydration levels</h2>



<p>Terahertz waves, which exist between microwaves and the mid-infrared spectrum, have unique interactions with water. </p>



<p>Since water strongly absorbs terahertz radiation, the researchers used this property to measure hydration levels within agave tissues. The technique allowed them to visualize water distribution and examine how fructans function at the molecular level.</p>



<p>The study, published in <em>Applied Optics</em>, demonstrates that terahertz spectroscopy is a non-invasive tool for plant analysis. </p>



<p>The researchers found that agave plants survive harsh conditions by storing water in specialized leaf structures. Additionally, fructans act as molecular sponges, ensuring that moisture remains available even in extreme drought.</p>



<p>“In the food industry, our findings on agave fructans and their exceptional water-binding properties could be used to develop new food ingredients that improve moisture retention, texture and shelf life, especially in dried or processed foods,” said Enrique Castro-Camus from CIO. </p>



<p>“This could lead to healthier, longer-lasting food products with fewer artificial preservatives.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intersection-of-biology-and-food-science">Intersection of biology and food science</h2>



<p>The study began as a collaboration between CIO’s Applied Terahertz Science group and June Simpson at Centro de Investigaciones Avanzadas (<a href="https://www.cinvestav.mx/irapuato/investigacion/directorio-de-investigacion/June-Kilpatrick-Simpson-Williamson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CINVESTAV</a>). Their focus was on water distribution in agave leaves and the role of fructans in hydration. </p>



<p>Around the same time, CIO researchers partnered with Socorro Villanueva from Centro de Investigación y Asistencia en Tecnología y Diseño del Estado de Jalisco (<a href="https://ciatej.mx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CIATEJ</a>) to explore how fructans protect frozen foods from damage. These projects merged to provide a comprehensive understanding of agave’s survival mechanisms.</p>



<p>For their analysis, the researchers used a time-domain terahertz spectrometer with a femtosecond fiber laser and sub-millimeter pixel resolution.</p>



<p>Thin leaf slices were placed between a terahertz emitter and detector, enabling hydration mapping through water absorption measurements. The spectrometer was later reconfigured to analyze fructan solutions in greater detail.</p>



<p>“Our research introduces several key innovations in the study of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predicting-how-climate-change-will-alter-plant-growth-cycles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant</a> hydration using terahertz technology,” said Ortiz-Martinez.</p>



<p>“One of the most significant advancements is non-invasive water detection - unlike traditional methods that require cutting, drying and weighing plant samples, terahertz imaging enables real-time hydration analysis without damaging the plant.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-agave-plants-retain-water">How agave plants retain water</h2>



<p>The study revealed that agave leaves have a unique water storage system. Their inner core remains hydrated, while the outer layer acts as a barrier to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-understanding-of-light-detection-in-plants-may-revolutionize-farming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">minimize water loss</a>. </p>



<p>Fructans play a critical role in this process by forming porous structures that trap and retain water molecules. This water retention capability is stronger than that of other sugars, making fructans vital for agave survival.</p>



<p>By combining tissue-level storage with molecular water retention, agaves have evolved into one of the most drought-resistant plants. These findings could have significant implications for crop cultivation in water-scarce regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-non-invasive-plant-monitoring">Expanding non-invasive plant monitoring</h2>



<p>Researchers now aim to expand terahertz spectroscopy applications to study drought-resistant mechanisms in agave and other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-bacteria-help-plants-stay-calm-and-keep-growing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant species</a>. The goal is to understand how different crops manage hydration, particularly those essential for food security.</p>



<p>Future developments may lead to a portable terahertz system for use in fields and greenhouses. Machine learning algorithms could further enhance this technology by analyzing terahertz images in real-time, enabling the detection of drought stress before visible signs appear.</p>



<p>The study highlights the importance of collaboration among experts in optics, plant physiology and food science. Researchers believe that integrating these disciplines will lead to practical applications for agriculture and food production.</p>



<p>“By advancing non-invasive plant monitoring methods, our research lays the foundation for smarter, more sustainable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-climates-force-plants-to-compete-with-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural practices</a>, ultimately benefiting both farmers and consumers while helping to conserve natural resources for future generations,” said Castro-Camus.</p>

<p>Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.</p>



<p>Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



<p>The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. <p>Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
