<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>It's long been recognized that carbon dioxide concentrations in our atmosphere are continuously on the rise. This increase is a byproduct of human activity and an agent of climate change.</p>



<p>However, a less explored but puzzling trend is the growing gap between the highest and lowest annual carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This widening gap between the peaks and troughs of carbon dioxide concentration was previously attributed to rising temperatures and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide. However, a recent study explores another possible factor: agriculture.</p>



<p>The unexpected findings revise our concept of the carbon cycle and hold important implications for future climate change mitigation efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-agriculture-shifts-carbon-dioxide">How agriculture shifts carbon dioxide</h2>



<p>The researchers found that, contrary to previous beliefs, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-produce-their-own-nitrogen-fertilizer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen fertilizer</a> used in agriculture is the chief contributor to the yearly ebb and flow of the carbon cycle. This highlights the impact of our actions and land management decisions on Earth system processes.</p>



<p>Study lead author Danica Lombardozzi is an assistant professor of ecosystem science and sustainability at <a href="https://www.colostate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a>.</p>



<p>“These findings are important because we have undervalued the role of agriculture in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-carbon-cycle-trends-of-the-past-50-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon cycle</a> fluxes," said Lombardozzi.</p>



<p>"A lot of people recognize that agriculture can help mitigate climate change, but because it's not represented in most Earth system models, it's not considered in climate change projections the way it should be."</p>



<p>So, how does this all work? As plants sprout in the spring, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to support the new growth. Once crops are harvested and other plants become dormant in the fall, less carbon dioxide is needed by plants and so the level in the atmosphere rises again.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nitrogen</a>, a common ingredient in fertilizer, is essential for plant growth and thus contributes to increased carbon absorption from the atmosphere during the growing season.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dioxide-by-the-numbers">Carbon dioxide by the numbers</h2>



<p>The study reveals that agricultural nitrogen contributes 45% to the rise in annual carbon cycle fluctuations.</p>



<p>Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and warmer temperatures also contribute to the difference between high and low carbon dioxide levels within a year, but not to the extent that nitrogen fertilizers do. </p>



<p>Interestingly, this carbon cycle fluctuation caused by crop growth doesn't directly affect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-practices-boost-soil-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon storage</a>. This is because crops are harvested annually and the absorbed carbon returns to the atmosphere. </p>



<p>However, the study adds an exciting dimension: modifying agricultural practices can enhance long-term carbon storage in the soil, which is a potential weapon against climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-agricultural-practices-and-carbon-fluxes">Agricultural practices and carbon fluxes</h2>



<p>Gretchen Keppel-Aleks, a co-author of the study from the University of Michigan, emphasized the implications of these findings.</p>



<p>“Agricultural management practices are very important to shaping the world we live in," she said Keppel-Aleks.</p>



<p>"At a time when many people feel like climate change has had profound and negative impacts on their lives through wildfire, flooding or droughts, we can use the fact that this study shows that agricultural management has a profound impact on carbon fluxes to think about how we can use agricultural management to our advantage.”</p>



<p>In line with this, many farmers are turning to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-adopt-regenerative-agriculture-better-soil-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regenerative agriculture</a> - agricultural practices designed to improve soil health and crop yield while combating climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-updating-earth-system-models">Updating Earth system models</h2>



<p>Despite evidence showing the crucial role of agriculture in carbon cycle fluctuations, it has been largely overlooked in the past because traditional Earth system models did not include agricultural processes. </p>



<p>The researchers used the Community Earth System Model, a tool developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and other institutions, to pinpoint the causes of fluctuation increase. Unsurprisingly, agricultural nitrogen emerged as the key player.</p>



<p>Accounting for agriculture, specifically agricultural nitrogen, in Earth system models is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the carbon cycle. Yet, the majority of the models do not take it into account.</p>



<p>“It is really hard to represent human decisions in an Earth system model, but we need to tackle it,” Lombardozzi said.</p>



<p>The research paints an empowering picture of agriculture's role in climate change, along with its potential for significant impact on mitigation strategies.</p>

Agriculture plays a surprising role in carbon dioxide fluctuations

<p>For the first time, researchers have used satellite collar data alongside specialized cameras to observe maternal denning in polar bears. This stage, when mothers give birth and remain in dens with their cubs, has long remained a mystery.</p>



<p>Studies have shown that the length of time mothers spend in dens impacts cub survival. However, scientists had little understanding of why they stay so long or what they do during that period. Until now, tracking devices had not been tested against direct observations of the bears.</p>



<p>Study lead author Louise Archer is a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto Scarborough</a>.</p>



<p>“The Arctic's warming two to four times faster than the rest of the world, humans are expanding into areas that might be important for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bear-cubs-are-emerging-earlier-from-dens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bear</a> denning, and we know they're sensitive to disturbance during this time,” said Archer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-denning-in-polar-bear-survival">Role of denning in polar bear survival</h2>



<p>Denning begins when pregnant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-polar-bear-day-keeping-moms-and-cubs-safe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bears</a> dig out snow dens to give birth. Cubs are born tiny and vulnerable, and the den shields them from the harsh Arctic cold as they nurse and grow rapidly. </p>



<p>During this time, mothers lose nearly half their body weight. Even after emerging, they do not immediately return to hunting. Instead, they stay near the den for several weeks, engaging in activities that seem more critical than eating.</p>



<p>Historically, researchers observed denning through binoculars, then remote cameras, and now satellite collars. Each method has its limitations. Satellite collars, which track location, activity, and ambient temperature, have become more common. </p>



<p>However, most collars only record data every few hours, making it difficult to capture short-term behaviors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-polar-bears-for-six-years">Tracking polar bears for six years</h2>



<p>In a six-year study, Archer and her colleagues tracked 13 polar bears from the Barents Sea subpopulation. They placed cameras outside of nine dens in Svalbard, Norway, while also using satellite collars.</p>



<p>Comparing the two methods revealed differences of several days to over a week in estimating key denning stages.</p>



<p>Each time the experts collected collar data, they matched it with corresponding camera images to confirm bear activities. </p>



<p>The team then built three statistical models. These allow researchers to use collar data to predict not just what the bears are doing, but what they will likely do. The models forecast breakout times, den emergence patterns, and final polar bear departures.</p>



<p>One model also considers how temperature changes affect the behavior of mothers and cubs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-and-den-emergence-patterns">Temperature and den emergence patterns</h2>



<p>“Collars do a good job at picking out these broader <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-doesnt-stick-to-polar-bear-fur-but-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behaviors</a>, like when the bears first come out of the den and when they depart. We found they corresponded pretty well to what we were seeing on camera,” said Archer. "But it was difficult to tease out the finer scale behaviors we saw on camera.”</p>



<p>Bears almost always emerged during daylight, with trips averaging 27 minutes. Some lasted under a minute, while others extended to nearly eight hours. Mothers brought their cubs outside about half the time, usually staying within 40 meters of the den. </p>



<p>Warmer temperatures increased the likelihood of polar bears leaving the den and prolonged their outdoor stays. The longer it had been since their first breakout, the more frequently they emerged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-denning-for-cubs">Importance of denning for cubs</h2>



<p>The data suggests that this period near the den helps cubs adapt to the outside world. Other research has found that a faster departure after breaking out reduces cub survival rates. If cubs do not spend enough time near the den, their chances of survival decrease.</p>



<p>“The Arctic is a really fast-changing area. We've got a lot of sea ice being lost, so seeing what polar bears are doing and how they're responding to these changes gives us an insight into what we might expect in other parts of the Arctic down the line,” said Archer.</p>



<p>She recently completed a study linking a decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bear-conservation-leaps-forward-with-new-tracking-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bear populations</a> to shrinking sea ice caused by climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-polar-bear-research">Future of polar bear research</h2>



<p>This study involved researchers from <a href="https://polarbearsinternational.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polar Bears International</a>, <a href="https://sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance</a>, and the <a href="https://www.npolar.no/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian Polar Institute</a>. </p>



<p>By improving tracking methods, scientists hope to gain a clearer picture of polar bear behavior in and around dens and the challenges they face.</p>



<p>Continued monitoring will provide valuable insights into how these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-2025-a-global-call-to-protect-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> adapt to their rapidly changing environment.</p>

Polar bear cub survival depends on this little-known den behavior

<p>Conventional wisdom has long held that iron oxides merely trap phosphorus in the environment. Yet new research has uncovered a more dynamic role for these minerals in driving the conversion of organic phosphorus into the inorganic form that plants require for growth. </p>



<p>A new study led by <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> reveals that this activity can occur at rates on par with biological enzymes, overturning assumptions about how phosphorus becomes available in soils and sediments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-fate-of-phosphorus">The fate of phosphorus </h2>



<p>Study senior author Ludmilla Aristilde is an associate professor of environmental engineering at Northwestern.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Phosphorus is essential to all forms of life. The backbone of DNA contains phosphate. So, all life on Earth, including humans, depends on phosphorus to thrive,” said Aristilde.</p>



<p>“That’s why we need <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-produce-their-own-nitrogen-fertilizer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertilizers</a> to increase phosphorus in soils. Otherwise, the crops we need to feed our planet will not grow. There is a profound interest in understanding the fate of phosphorus in the environment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-availability-of-inorganic-phosphorus">Availability of inorganic phosphorus</h2>



<p>Most soil phosphorus exists in organic form, bound to carbon atoms in plant, animal, or microbial remains. Plants, however, need inorganic phosphorus - the sort found in common fertilizers - for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-grow-more-branches-and-become-bushy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">growth</a> and survival. </p>



<p>Traditional thinking held that microbial and plant enzymes alone could break down organic phosphorus, releasing the inorganic portion.</p>



<p>Prior work by Aristilde’s group demonstrated that iron oxides, which are abundant in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-soil-day-2024-protecting-our-planets-lifeline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soils</a> and sediments, can likewise facilitate this transformation. </p>



<p>In the new study, lead author and PhD student Jade Basinski, along with other members of Aristilde’s lab, sought to determine just how much phosphorus these minerals could release and how efficiently they function in various scenarios.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-iron-oxides">The role of iron oxides</h2>



<p>To investigate, the researchers examined three frequently occurring iron oxides: goethite, hematite, and ferrihydrite. They exposed these minerals to different ribonucleotides, the building blocks of RNA, which contain phosphorus in organic bonds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By measuring the appearance of inorganic phosphorus both in the surrounding solution and on the mineral surfaces, the team assessed the extent of the reaction and how quickly it proceeded. </p>



<p>The researchers also varied reaction times and the concentration of ribonucleotides to observe how these conditions influenced the process.</p>



<p>The findings showed that iron oxides are capable of driving the conversion of organic phosphorus to inorganic phosphorus at rates comparable to enzymes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iron-oxides-as-catalytic-traps"><strong>Iron oxides as ‘catalytic traps’</strong></h2>



<p>Moreover, the researchers uncovered a particular twist: some minerals can hold on to the newly released inorganic phosphorus, effectively sequestering it on their surfaces.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We concluded that iron oxides are ‘catalytic traps’ because they catalyze the reaction to remove phosphate from organic compounds but trap the phosphate product on the mineral surface,” Aristilde said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Enzymes don’t trap the product; they make everything available. We found goethite was the only mineral that didn’t trap all the phosphorus after the reaction.”</p>



<p>While ferrihydrite and hematite tended to keep the cleaved phosphorus locked in place, goethite proved more inclined to release it back into the surrounding medium.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Hematite was notably effective at processing ribonucleotides containing one phosphorus, whereas goethite showed heightened performance with those containing three. </p>



<p>These differences may reflect each mineral’s specific surface chemistry or structural characteristics, though the precise reasons remain unknown.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-crops-and-plant-growth"><strong>Implications for </strong>crops and plant growth</h2>



<p>This discovery has far-reaching implications for agricultural practices. Farmers worldwide have long relied on adding phosphorus to fields to promote plant growth, yet phosphorus is a finite resource sourced primarily from phosphate rock in places such as the United States, Morocco, and China. </p>



<p>As supply concerns grow, identifying alternative means to free up naturally occurring organic phosphorus could help maintain affordable food production.</p>



<p>Aristilde’s group believes that a deeper understanding of why goethite more readily releases inorganic phosphorus might guide the design of synthetic catalysts or soil amendments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our work is providing a steppingstone for designing and engineering a synthetic catalyst as a way to recycle phosphorus,” Aristilde said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We uncovered a reaction that’s happening naturally. The dream will be to leverage our findings as a way to make catalysts to contribute to the production of fertilizers for our food security.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions"><strong>Future research directions</strong></h2>



<p>The next step will be to discover precisely how different mineral compositions drive these catalytic reactions. </p>



<p>Researchers initially hypothesized that the shape or structure of the phosphorus compounds themselves might determine the release rates, but the data did not support that idea. </p>



<p>Now, attention is turning to the internal chemistry of each mineral, with the hope that clarifying these fine-scale details may point to new pathways for managing soil phosphorus.</p>



<p>In revealing that iron oxides can act as powerful catalysts for phosphorus release, the Northwestern study challenges the notion of these minerals as inert storage sites. Instead, they emerge as dynamic participants in a process vital to crop growth and, ultimately, the global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/futuristic-food-supply-transforming-co2-into-protein/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food supply</a>. </p>



<p>Understanding this process better could help scientists and farmers find sustainable solutions for using phosphorus more wisely, ensuring this critical nutrient remains within reach for future generations.</p>

<p>Farmed fish are often viewed with suspicion, while wild-caught varieties are more likely to be perceived as healthy and pure. Seafood shoppers everywhere debate the differences and weigh their options carefully.</p>



<p>A fresh scientific review points to an unexpected conclusion. Various pollutants can accumulate in fish, and wild-caught individuals appear to experience greater exposure to these. </p>



<p>This perspective is shared by <a href="https://orcid.org/0009-0001-6007-8622" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Isabel  Casanova-Martínez</a>, a scientist who works under the auspices of several Spanish research institutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-heavy-metals">Understanding heavy metals</h2>



<p>Many people recognize that <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/lab-tests/heavy-metal-blood-test/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heavy metals</a> pose a threat for food safety. </p>



<p>These substances include elements like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elevated-mercury-levels-discovered-in-dolphins/">mercury</a>, <a href="https://periodic-table.rsc.org/element/33/arsenic" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arsenic</a>, lead and others that can build up in tissue (bioaccumulate) over time. Certain types can be risky to humans if present in large amounts.</p>



<p>Researchers found that wild-caught fish carried an average mercury concentration of 0.06 micrograms per gram, while farmed fish had about half that, at 0.038 micrograms per gram. </p>



<p>They also found arsenic levels of 3.26 micrograms per gram in wild fish, compared with 1.23 micrograms per gram in farmed varieties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ddt-and-other-pollutants">DDT and other pollutants</h2>



<p>A lesser-known concern is <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ingredients-used-pesticide-products/ddt-brief-history-and-status" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DDT</a>, which was once a widely used pesticide. Even though it was banned in many places years ago, traces can still linger. These residues can find their way into aquatic environments and accumulate in fish.</p>



<p>The review indicates around 196.48 nanograms per gram of DDT in wild-caught samples, whereas farmed fish had about 44.64 nanograms per gram. </p>



<p>The findings suggest differences in how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-small-fish-whole-reduces-cancer-risk-in-women/">fish</a> come into contact with old pesticide deposits, possibly due to habitat or feeding patterns.</p>

<p>Fish produced through aquaculture may face stricter oversight in terms of feed and water conditions. </p>

<p>Experts often urge pregnant women to be particularly careful about the consumption of large, predatory fish as they are known to harbor elevated mercury levels.</p>

<p>Eating fish brings many benefits. It offers protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and important minerals. </p>

<p>That rarity makes them a favorite topic for those who study unusual behavior in matter.</p>



<p>Scientists have theorized for decades that electrons in special environments might display such repeating structures. </p>



<p>Reports hinted at possible sightings, but nobody had directly measured the electron energies in a real crystal to confirm this fractal. It looked like a problem best left to speculation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-a-decades-old-prediction">Observing a decades-old prediction</h2>



<p>Now, however, a brand-new observation in quantum materials has left researchers excited. They have found an intricate energy pattern that matches a famous prediction from the 1970s.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/carbon-atom" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ali Yazdani</a>, James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at <a href="https://www.princeton.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton</a>, led the group that made this unexpected observation.</p>



<p>He and his colleagues captured direct evidence of the fractal pattern in a new type of material that was created by stacking and twisting sheets of carbon atoms, and which produced a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0097849300000431" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moiré design</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fractal-energy-pattern-in-quantum-material">Fractal energy pattern in quantum material</h2>



<p>Scientists have long been fascinated by <a href="https://lab.semi.ac.cn/library/upload/files/2019/1/412557940.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fractals</a>, which are self-repeating patterns seen at many scales. </p>



<p>The research team measured the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-atomic-collisions-unleash-unexpected-energy-bursts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energies</a> of electrons in these twisted sheets and found a sequence that matched the pattern known as Hofstadter's butterfly.</p>

<p>Hofstadter first named this spectral pattern in his Ph.D. work in 1976, and it is one of the early examples of modern scientific data visualization.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.mathematik.com/Hofstadter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hofstadter's butterfly</a> is also a rare example of a problem that is solved exactly in quantum mechanics, without any approximations,” explained  <a href="https://physics.mit.edu/research/pappalardo-fellowships-in-physics/kevin-nuckolls/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kevin Nuckolls</a>, the co-lead author of the paper. He explained that until now, no one had observed this energy pattern directly in a real <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poorly-understood-force-helps-keep-atomic-nuclei-stable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">material</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accidental-clues">Accidental clues</h2>



<p>“Our discovery was basically an accident,” commented Nuckolls. He revealed that they originally set out to examine superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene but ended up with a moiré arrangement that opened the door to the butterfly pattern.</p>



<p>A team at MIT had shown in 2018 that <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-41068-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moiré crystals</a> can become <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nature26160" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">superconducting</a> under special conditions.</p>



<p>The samples did not meet the magic angle for superconductivity, but they produced a clear view of the fractal spectrum. That unexpected twist confirmed the calculations from decades ago in a direct and visual way.</p>



<p>“Sometimes nature is kind to you,” said Nuckolls. He mentioned that they nearly missed this hidden butterfly and only caught on after studying the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electron</a> energies in more detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detailed-electron-energy-patterns">Detailed electron energy patterns</h2>



<p>The team applied a <a href="https://www.nanoscience.com/techniques/scanning-tunneling-microscopy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scanning tunneling microscope</a>, which probes surfaces at an atomic scale by allowing electrons to tunnel from a sharp tip. This method captured the energy structure in exquisite detail.</p>

<p>“The STM is a direct energy probe,” said <a href="https://www.thegraphenecouncil.org/blogpost/1501180/Graphene-News-and-Updates?tag=Myungchul+Oh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Myungchul Oh</a>, a postdoctoral research associate and co-lead author of the paper. He emphasized that this made it possible to verify the fractal pattern in ways that electrical resistance tests could not match.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-theories-on-quantum-fractals">Shifting theories on quantum fractals</h2>



<p>The data suggests that <a href="https://lightcolourvision.org/dictionary/definition/electron-electron-interaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electron-electron interactions</a> play a role in shaping the fractal arrangement. These interactions were not part of the original model that was proposed in the 1970s.</p>



<p>Theoretical efforts by <a href="https://phy.princeton.edu/people/biao-lian" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Biao Lian</a> and his students helped interpret these extra features. Their calculations matched the experimental findings, once they added the impact of strong correlations among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seeking-the-origins-of-the-molecule-that-made-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electrons</a>.</p>



<p>“The Hofstadter regime is a rich and vibrant spectrum of topological states,” said <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Wf1aRMYAAAAJ&amp;hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michael Scheer</a>, a graduate student in physics at Princeton and one of the paper's co-lead authors. </p>



<p>He believes these images could unlock new insights into some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-fission-what-exactly-happens-when-the-nucleus-of-an-atom-splits-in-two/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> behaviors that remain poorly understood.</p>



<p>These findings hint at new possibilities for exploring unusual phases in two-dimensional materials. Researchers see this study as one step toward richer frameworks in quantum physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-fractal-pattern-surprises">More fractal pattern surprises</h2>



<p>Many experts wonder if other twisted structures might show similar surprises. Each new angle or stacking pattern can shift electrons into exotic behaviors.</p>



<p>Some might ask how such fractal features could connect to next-generation devices. While no immediate inventions are guaranteed, curiosity in this area is growing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-story">The bigger story</h2>



<p>Beyond the fractal butterfly, other puzzles lie in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nmat5012" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">topological states</a> and quantum conductivity. Physicists hope that sharper imaging techniques might map out more hidden patterns.</p>



<p>“These moiré crystals provided an ideal setting,” stressed Ali Yazdani. He said that the carefully arranged <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/carbon/articles/10.3389/frcrb.2023.1305515/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon lattices</a> allowed electrons to move in a periodic environment that revealed the structure that Hofstadter predicted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-studies-on-fractal-patterns">Future studies on fractal patterns</h2>



<p>Investigators plan to measure how these fractals shift as conditions like temperature or magnetic field change. Each variation might introduce a new shape to the electronic spectrum.</p>



<p>There is also excitement about combining this fractal observation with further research on superconductivity. </p>



<p>Small tweaks in the angle or doping level could reveal how electrons organize themselves in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-021-00923-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flat moiré bands</a>.</p>

Quantum fractal pattern predicted 50 years ago observed in the lab

<p>Long-standing investigations into the birth and formation of stars, planets, and galaxies have given rise to many exciting revelations. One such fascinating area of research is the study of planet-forming disks - the cosmic nurseries that assist in the generation of new planets.</p>



<p>Traditionally, researchers believed that these disks existed for only a brief period in a star’s life. Most estimates suggested that within 10 million years, they would dissipate, leaving behind either fully formed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-planets-form-its-much-more-complicated-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a> or barren remnants. </p>



<p>However, new research is challenging this assumption, and has revealed that some disks can last far longer under specific conditions. </p>



<p>This unexpected discovery opens up fresh possibilities for understanding how planets form and whether long-lived disks might increase the chances that life exists beyond Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-discovery-defies-expectations">Cosmic discovery defies expectations</h2>



<p>A team of researchers at the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a> has discovered that planet-forming disks can persist for much longer than previously believed. Their study focused on stars with a mass of one-tenth of the sun or less. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that under these conditions, disks can survive for as long as 30 million years - three times longer than earlier estimates.</p>



<p>This breakthrough was made possible by NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a>, which allowed researchers to conduct a detailed chemical analysis of an unusually long-lived disk. </p>



<p>Their study, published in <em>Astrophysical Letters</em>, sheds new light on the timeline of planet formation. The longer a disk survives, the more time it provides for planets to form, which could significantly impact the development of planetary systems.</p>



<p>"In a sense, protoplanetary disks provide us with baby pictures of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-finds-largest-amount-of-carbon-ever-seen-in-a-planet-forming-disk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary systems</a>, including a glimpse of what our solar system may have looked like in its infancy," explained Feng Long, the lead author of the study and a Sagan Fellow at the <a href="https://www.lpl.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lunar and Planetary Laboratory</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-star-that-changed-the-timeline">The star that changed the timeline</h2>



<p>The research focused on a star designated WISE J044634.16–262756.1B, which is more conveniently known as J0446B. </p>



<p>This star, located in the constellation Columba and about 267 light-years from Earth, has managed to hold onto its disk far longer than expected.</p>



<p>Most young stars lose their planet-forming disks within 10 to 20 million years. Yet, J0446B has retained its disk for about 30 million years, making it an anomaly in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-giant-planets-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary science</a>. </p>



<p>The team’s analysis suggests that small stars like J0446B might be capable of maintaining their disks for extended periods, allowing planets more time to form and develop stable orbits.</p>



<p>"Because materials in the disk provide the raw materials for planets, the disk's lifespan determines how much time the system has to form planets," explained Long.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stable-environment-for-planet-formation">Stable environment for planet formation</h2>



<p>A key finding of this study is that even though these disks last longer, their chemistry stays mostly the same.</p>



<p>The team observed that the gases and dust in the disk remain relatively stable, providing a consistent environment in which <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-formation-new-insights-mechanics-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a> may form. </p>



<p>This stability is crucial, as it ensures that planets forming around small stars have the necessary materials for an extended period.</p>



<p>By analyzing the gas content in J0446B’s disk, the researchers ruled out the possibility that it was a debris disk. </p>



<p>Unlike protoplanetary disks, debris disks are made of second-generation material formed by asteroid collisions, and do not support the formation of new planets. The presence of primordial gas confirmed that J0446B’s disk was still in its original state.</p>



<p>"We detected gases like hydrogen and neon, which tells us that there is still primordial gas left in the disk around J0446B," said Chengyan Xie, a doctoral student at the <a href="https://www.lpl.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lunar and Planetary Laboratory</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-life-beyond-earth">Implications for life beyond Earth</h2>



<p>The discovery of long-lived planet-forming disks has profound implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-planets-formed-in-the-harsh-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary systems</a> outside our own. </p>



<p>One of the most intriguing planetary systems for researchers is TRAPPIST-1, which lies 40 light-years from Earth. This system features a red dwarf star surrounded by seven planets similar in size to Earth. </p>



<p>Three of these planets exist in the habitable zone, where conditions could allow for liquid water and, potentially, for life.</p>



<p>The star in the TRAPPIST-1 system is similar in size to J0446B. Scientists think long-lasting disks help shape planets around small stars. The extra gas in these disks might affect how planets move and settle into their orbits.</p>



<p>"To make the specific arrangement of orbits we see with TRAPPIST-1, planets need to migrate inside the disk, a process that requires the presence of gas," explained Ilaria Pascucci, a professor of planetary sciences at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.</p>



<p>"The long presence of gas we find in those disks might be the reason behind TRAPPIST-1's unique arrangement."</p>

<p>The sun and bigger stars lose their disks faster. They change quickly, giving planets less time to form. This might be why our solar system looks different from ones around smaller stars.</p>

<p>Small stars are much more common than larger stars like the sun, so they might help scientists discover how planets form and whether they can support life.</p>



<p>"Developing a better understanding of how low-mass star systems evolve and getting snapshots of long-lived disks might help pave the way to filling out the blanks in the photo album of the universe," Long said.</p>

<p>Since planets need time and the right conditions to in order to develop, the discovery that planet-forming discs may last longer raises new questions. </p>

<p>With powerful telescopes, scientists hope to learn even more about these long-lasting disks. This discovery could completely change how we understand the requirements for planets to form and survive.</p>



<p>Researchers will continue studying these cosmic nurseries to learn more about how planets form and whether any of them could be home to life beyond Earth.</p>

<p>An extensive, decades-long analysis tracking endangered caribou populations has revealed that migration patterns are eroding in both distance and duration. Researchers attribute this decline largely to human-caused habitat disturbances rather than shifts in climate.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The work, led by Dr. Clayton Lamb of <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of British Columbia</a> (UBC), emphasizes the urgency of safeguarding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tracking-caribou-movement-patterns-can-transform-conservation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">caribou</a> habitats and their time-honored migratory routes.</p>



<p>“Western science and Indigenous knowledge recognize the critical role of migration in sustaining abundant wildlife populations, yet these movements are increasingly disrupted by human activity worldwide,” Lamb said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We studied the extent and type of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-behaviors-are-shaped-by-experience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration</a> as well as changes through time, and determined if these changes correlated with landscape disturbance or shifts in weather.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shrinking-caribou-migrations">Shrinking caribou migrations</h2>



<p>The research team examined data spanning 35 years (from 1987 to 2022), which included 1,704,842 geolocation points from radio tags and GPS collars. More than 800 individual animals across 27 southern mountain caribou subpopulations provided a massive dataset.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By comparing the timing and distances traveled over three and a half decades, scientists gleaned new insights into how caribou movement is shifting.</p>



<p>“The data shows that most of these subpopulations remain migratory to some degree, but seasonal migrations appear to be shrinking in both duration and extent,” Lamb said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Though our study spanned just 35 years - a blink compared to millennia caribou have been migrating here - we found migration eroding, not due to weather shifts, but alongside expanding human disturbance and caribou population decline.”</p>



<p>Caribou have traditionally migrated in response to food availability, snowpack conditions, and predation pressures, using both elevational (vertical) and horizontal movements.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Barren-ground caribou in the far north, for example, routinely traverse hundreds of kilometers, sometimes in vast herds. Southern mountain caribou travel smaller distances, but they once performed significant up-and-down journeys among mountainous and forested regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-caused-habitat-disturbance">Human-caused habitat disturbance</h2>



<p>While the researchers tested the influence of changing weather patterns, they found no significant correlation between the shifts in migration and climate variables. Instead, they identified industrial and resource development as the primary factor affecting migration routes.</p>



<p>“Due to their southern distribution, these caribou are exposed to higher levels of human-caused landscape disturbance and associated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-species-are-shifting-their-habitats-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat</a> change and loss," explained Lamb. </p>



<p>"Observations from Indigenous communities, local people, scientists and government biologists indicate that southern mountain caribou migrations are changing or not happening at all."</p>



<p>Signs of development - such as logging, oil and gas extraction, road-building, and other infrastructure projects - have transformed much of the caribou’s original habitat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By subdividing forests and carving out new corridors, these changes can boost predator access and fragment the terrain, making traditional migratory routes untenable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-decline-in-caribou-migration">Significant decline in caribou migration </h2>



<p>“Southern mountain caribou migration, including the distance and elevation change, has declined significantly over the past 40 years, and we believe these changes are correlated with human-caused disturbances, including change and loss to habitat,” said Adam Ford, director of UBC’s Wildlife Restoration Ecology Lab.</p>



<p>In 1983, just 5% of the area inhabited by these caribou subpopulations had been disturbed by human activities (like reservoirs, logging, and resource extraction), whereas natural disturbances - for instance, from fire or pests - accounted for a mere 0.3%. By 2020, however, more than 30% of the same landscape had been altered by human use.</p>



<p>“Within the last 35 years, human-caused disturbance increased nearly sixfold within the ranges of the caribou subpopulations. Beyond impacts to migration, habitat disturbance - which has disrupted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/danger-zones-climate-change-is-altering-predator-prey-dynamics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predator-prey dynamics</a> - is a primary cause of caribou population declines,” Ford said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s important to note the southern mountain caribou population declined by more than 50 per cent over the period of our investigation.”</p>



<p>This steep population drop coincides with the observed erosion of migratory behavior, signaling that caribou now struggle to adapt to an environment fragmented by industry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-restoring-ecological-balance">Restoring ecological balance </h2>



<p>“Sustaining caribou populations and their migratory behavior into the future will require a rapid change in managing the landscape that facilitates extensive habitat conservation, restoration and a reduction in ongoing human-caused disturbance,” Lamb said.</p>



<p>Consequently, the study suggests that reversing these trends will require robust habitat protection efforts and stricter oversight of resource extraction. </p>



<p>Creating buffer zones, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planting-trees-is-important-but-reforestation-can-help-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reforesting</a> clear-cut areas, and adopting management strategies to limit predator access are essential steps.</p>



<p>“Creating a landscape with suitable caribou habitats and lower predator densities that can once again sustain caribou is imperative to preserve their migratory behaviorr and support recovery efforts,” Lamb concluded.</p>



<p>Experts agree that a sustained effort to restore ecological balance could keep caribou on the move. Without prompt and meaningful intervention, further disruptions could eliminate both the migration patterns and the herds themselves - losing a millennia-old aspect of the mountain ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Through collaboration among governments, industries, local communities, and Indigenous groups, conservation initiatives may still preserve this species’ ancient migratory legacy.</p>

<p>A young man’s remains from 79 AD have left experts speechless. Fragments of his brain appear to have turned into shiny, black glass.</p>



<p>Volcanologist <a href="https://www.geologicalfieldtripsandmaps.com/N12/guido-giordano.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guido Giordano</a>, from the Department of Science at <a href="https://www.uniroma3.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roma Tre University</a>, is part of a team that studied this strange <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-next-big-volcano-eruption-will-cause-global-chaos-climate-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phenomenon</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-exactly-happened">What exactly happened?</h2>



<p>Archaeologists discovered the man during excavations in the 1960s, lying on a wooden bed in a building that was devoted to honoring <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Augustus-Roman-emperor" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emperor Augustus</a>. He was probably around 20 years old.</p>



<p>When nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted, waves of burning ash swept over Herculaneum. Researchers say that, at some point, the extreme heat transformed parts of his brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-mount-vesuvius-the-basics">Understanding Mount Vesuvius - the basics</h2>



<p>Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. It looms over the Bay of Naples in Italy, standing as both a breathtaking natural wonder and a ticking geological time bomb. </p>



<p>Back in 79 AD, the eruption that is the subject of this article buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under thick layers of ash and lava, freezing them in time. </p>

<p>That eruption remains one of the deadliest in history, killing thousands and leaving behind eerily preserved ruins that give us a rare glimpse into ancient life. </p>



<p>Today, scientists keep a close eye on Vesuvius, since it’s still very much active and sits dangerously close to millions of people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-turned-into-glass">How the brain turned into glass</h2>



<p>According to the new analysis, temperatures above 950°F (510°C) would have been needed. The tissue then had to cool fast enough to avoid crystallizing.</p>



<p>“This is an amazing and truly unexpected find,” exclaimed Giordano. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-88894-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Researchers</a> point out that most organic matter would simply burn to ashes at this temperature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-mattered-for-scientists">Why it mattered for scientists</h2>



<p>This unique case highlights a rarely seen effect of hot ash clouds, which are known as <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-dangerous-are-pyroclastic-flows" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pyroclastic flows</a>. Such clouds can blast into an area at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axial-seamount-large-underwater-volcano-off-us-coast-will-likely-erupt-in-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high temperatures</a> and then rapidly recede.</p>



<p>One reason the brain fragments remained is that the surrounding deposit was not hot enough to remelt the glass. </p>



<p>That deposit reached roughly 869°F (465°C), which is lower than the point where the glassy tissue would revert to a softer form.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-about-a-rare-event">Clues about a rare event</h2>



<p>Researchers say that the first scorching surge struck Herculaneum minutes before the main flow arrived. That could explain how this man’s brain was briefly exposed to extreme heat but then cooled.</p>



<p>Complex neuron and spinal cord structures remained embedded in the hardened material. These delicate features rarely survive in such clarity.</p>

<p>Scientists examined the fragments with electron microscopes. They noticed patterns that align with known neuronal shapes, including <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554388/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">axons</a>.</p>



<p>Internal pores in the glassy chunks hinted at water vapor escaping from the tissue. The result was an almost volcanic obsidian-like appearance.</p>

<p>All other humans in Herculaneum at the time appear to have fled toward the sea. This man did not.</p>



<p>“Maybe he was drunk,” joked Giordano. He suspects the victim was simply overwhelmed by the sudden <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstone-supervolcano-eruption-study-sparks-new-debate-on-where-and-when-it-will-erupt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disaster</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-from-a-glass-preserved-brain">Insights from a glass-preserved brain</h2>



<p>Understanding how extreme heat affects human remains could help experts reconstruct events in ancient and modern disasters. </p>



<p>This case challenges previous assumptions about how bodies react in high-temperature environments.</p>



<p>It also raises questions about other potential instances of vitrified tissue that may have gone unnoticed in the past. If similar cases exist, they could provide further insights into the effects of pyroclastic flows on the human body.</p>



<p>Researchers may now look for evidence of this phenomenon at other volcanic sites where high heat and rapid cooling occurred.</p>

<p>Hot ash clouds can be extremely dangerous. Some modern fatalities, such as those near <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8674289/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guatemala’s Fuego</a> volcano in 2018, likely involved these blasts.</p>



<p>Giordano explained that buildings near active volcanoes might need heat-resistant designs. Such measures could allow people a brief chance to escape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-a-single-discovery">Beyond a single discovery</h2>



<p>Volcanic eruptions have shaped human history by burying entire cities. Pompeii is often in the spotlight, yet Herculaneum reveals equally gripping scenes.</p>



<p>The glass brain fragments remain the only known example of this natural process in human tissue. Their formation required fast heating, rapid cooling, and a precise window of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-eruption-zavaritzki-that-cooled-the-earth-and-turned-the-sun-green/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature</a>.</p>

<p>Study co-authors believe the victim was part of a religious community. The building where he was found was dedicated to the worship of Augustus.</p>

<p>To the untrained eye, <em>Megaphragma</em> wasps may appear as mere specks of dust, but these minuscule insects - measuring just a fifth of a millimeter - are formidable hunters. </p>



<p>They prey on even smaller insects called thrips, using them for both nourishment and shelter.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-wasp-species-named-after-famous-thieves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiny wasps</a> infiltrate thrips' bodies to lay their eggs, which then hatch, feed, and develop entirely within their hosts.</p>



<p>This unusual lifestyle requires them to fit into spaces that most insects would find impossible. It is no wonder that scientists have long been curious about how the wasps' bodies and organs manage under such extreme size constraints.</p>



<p>A recent study led by Dr. Gregor Belušič from the <a href="https://www.bf.uni-lj.si/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Biotechnical Faculty</a> at the University of Ljubljana may have begun to clear up some of the mystery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-wonders-of-the-insect-world">Tiny wonders of the insect world</h2>



<p><em>Megaphragma</em> wasps do more than just outsmart thrips. They also show how far miniaturization can go before basic features stop working.</p>



<p>Most insects rely on their eyes for movement and exploration. Ommatidia form the building blocks of these compound eyes and act like small detectors for incoming light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-incredible-compound-eyes">Incredible compound eyes</h2>



<p>In <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37666087/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Megaphragma viggianii</em></a>, researchers have counted a total of 29 ommatidia, which is extremely low compared to the number in the eyes of bigger insects. </p>



<p>Each tiny ommatidium uses a lens that measures around 8 micrometers, but that’s still enough to focus light onto specialized structures below.</p>



<p>The rhabdom within each ommatidium (the optical units that make up the insect’s compound eye) has stayed thick enough - about 2 micrometers - to catch adequate light and send signals to the brain. </p>



<p>This balance between lens size and rhabdom thickness seems to preserve clear vision during daylight hours.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-energetic-cost-of-vision">The energetic cost of vision</h2>



<p>Packed pigment granules line the sides of each ommatidium. They block stray light that might otherwise blur the wasp’s vision.</p>



<p>Maintaining sight at such a small scale may demand a lot of energy. Some data hint at heavy loads of mitochondria in these photoreceptor cells, suggesting that vision comes with a metabolic price.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-polarized-light-detection">Polarized light detection</h2>



<p>Roughly a third of the ommatidia cluster near the dorsal region of the eye. These specialized structures appear to detect <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/13825256/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polarized light</a>, a feature known to help insects orientate under open skies.</p>



<p>In many insects, the dorsal rim area is essential for successful navigation and migration. It provides steady guidance, even when visual landmarks are absent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extra-light-sensors">Extra light sensors</h2>



<p>In addition, a few unique photoreceptor cells hide behind the first row of ommatidia. They are positioned to receive light indirectly.</p>



<p>Some experts suggest these hidden receptors might take part in day-night rhythms or other internal body processes. Small as these eyes are, they still maintain surprising complexity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compensations-for-extreme-miniaturization">Compensations for extreme miniaturization</h2>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-flies-have-a-new-weapon-to-defend-against-parasitic-wasps/">wasps</a> show that size reduction has its limits. Eye cells have nuclei, which remain intact despite the disappearance of nuclei in parts of the wasp’s brain.</p>



<p>Retaining larger cell structures may be unavoidable for proper light collection and signal processing. If eyes shrink too far, vision might no longer be useful during flight or host-finding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Scientists see these eyes as a chance to explore extreme biology. Understanding how tiny lenses and sensors function might lead to ideas in micro-robotics or imaging devices.</p>



<p>These intricate eyes can also be mapped in three dimensions, thanks to modern microscopy methods. </p>



<p>That opens doors to simulating miniature visual systems on computers and comparing them with those found in larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-rarest-insect-returns-lord-howe-island-stick-insect-dryococelus-australis/">insect species</a>.</p>

While most people associate circadian rhythms with sleep cycles, new research shows that these rhythms also affect how quickly injuries heal.</p>



<p>A study from Northwestern Medicine, conducted on mice, reveals that muscle injuries heal faster when they occur during the body's natural waking hours.</p>



<p>These findings could have significant implications for shift workers, aging individuals, and those with metabolic disorders. </p>



<p>The study also raises important questions about how disruptions like jetlag and daylight saving time changes impact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-ultra-processed-foods-makes-your-muscles-weaker-and-more-fragile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">muscle</a> recovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faster-recovery-during-active-hours">Faster recovery during active hours</h2>



<p>The study, conducted on mice, shows that muscle injuries recover more quickly when they occur during active hours. Injuries during usual sleeping periods heal at a slower rate. </p>



<p>Clara Peek, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics at Northwestern University <a href="https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Feinberg School of Medicine</a>, believes these findings could help shift workers and those experiencing aging-related muscle issues.</p>



<p>The study also highlights how disruptions such as jetlag and daylight saving time changes affect circadian rhythms. “In each of our cells, we have genes that form the molecular circadian clock,” Peek said. </p>



<p>“These clock genes encode a set of transcription factors that regulate many processes throughout the body and align them with the appropriate time of day. Things like sleep/wake behavior, metabolism, body temperature and hormones - all these are circadian.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-time-affects-muscle-recovery">How time affects muscle recovery</h2>



<p>Peek’s lab previously found that muscle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/muscles-defy-aging-with-remarkable-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tissues</a> regenerate faster when damaged during natural waking hours. </p>



<p>To understand why, the researchers examined muscle stem cells at different times of the day. They used single-cell sequencing to analyze injured and uninjured muscle tissue. </p>



<p>The findings revealed that the inflammatory response in stem cells varies by time of day. These stem cells signal neutrophils, immune cells crucial to muscle recovery.</p>



<p>“We discovered that the cells’ signaling to each other was much stronger right after injury when mice were injured during their wake period,” Peek said. </p>



<p>“That was an exciting finding and is further evidence that the circadian regulation of muscle regeneration is dictated by this stem cell-immune cell crosstalk.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aging-may-slow-muscle-recovery">Aging may slow muscle recovery</h2>



<p>The research also uncovered the role of NAD+, a coenzyme essential for energy production and metabolism. The muscle stem cell clock influences NAD+ production after injury, which in turn affects immune responses.</p>



<p>To test this, the scientists used genetically modified mice with increased NAD+ production in muscle stem cells. They found that boosting NAD+ levels led to stronger inflammatory responses and improved muscle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-fuels-neuron-growth-through-muscle-signals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healing</a>.</p>



<p>These findings may be crucial in understanding muscle recovery issues linked to aging and metabolic disorders. Peek believes circadian rhythm disruptions could explain slower healing in older individuals and those with obesity or diabetes.</p>



<p>“Circadian disruptions linked to aging and metabolic syndromes like obesity and diabetes are also associated with diminished <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childhood-trauma-can-cause-muscle-decline-adult-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">muscle</a> regeneration,” Peek said. </p>



<p>“Now, we are able to ask: do these circadian disruptions contribute to poorer muscle regeneration capacity in these conditions? How does that interact with the immune system?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Peek and her team plan to explore the exact mechanisms by which NAD+ influences immune responses. They hope to uncover whether this process can be manipulated to improve muscle recovery in those affected by aging or metabolic disorders.</p>



<p>“A lot of circadian biology focuses on molecular clocks in individual cell types and in the absence of stress,” Peek said. </p>



<p>“We haven't had the technology to sufficiently look at cell-cell interactions until recently. Trying to understand how different circadian clocks interact in conditions of stress and regeneration, is really an exciting new frontier.”</p>



<p>This research opens new possibilities for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-muscles-may-soon-be-able-to-regenerate-like-other-muscles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enhancing muscle repair</a> by aligning treatment approaches with the body's natural rhythms. </p>



<p>Optimizing recovery schedules and boosting NAD+ production could improve muscle healing. This study reveals how the body’s internal clock affects regeneration, offering new possibilities for better treatments. </p>



<p>Understanding these processes may help aging individuals, shift workers, and those with metabolic disorders recover faster and maintain stronger muscles.</p>

<p>A recent study indicates that chronic stress may be associated with an increased chance of stroke in some younger adults - particularly women.</p>



<p>The researchers examined younger adults and found an association between stress and stroke in female participants, but not male participants. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-young-adults-and-work-related-stress">Young adults and work-related stress</h2>



<p>The research team zeroed in on adults under the age of 50 who had experienced an ischemic stroke of unknown cause.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Younger people often experience stress due to the demands and pressures associated with work, including long hours and job insecurity, as well as financial burdens,” said senior Nicolas Martinez-Majander, a doctor at the <a href="https://www.hus.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helsinki University Hospital</a> in Finland.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Previous research has shown that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chronic-stress-disrupts-gut-bacteria-and-fuels-cancer-progression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chronic stress</a> can negatively affect physical and mental health. Our study found it may increase the risk of stroke in younger women.”</p>



<p>Ischemic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stroke-deaths-expected-to-rise-to-five-million-by-2030/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke</a> occurs when a blood vessel is blocked, cutting off blood flow to part of the brain. Potential outcomes can include weakness, speech issues, vision problems, or even death.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While young adults generally carry a lower risk of stroke, chronic stress may lead to physiological changes that raise stroke likelihood in certain groups, especially younger women.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chronic-stress-and-stroke">Chronic stress and stroke</h2>



<p>To investigate possible links between chronic stress and stroke, the researchers examined 426 participants aged 18 to 49 who had an ischemic stroke lacking a known cause. These individuals were then matched by age and sex with 426 people who had not experienced a stroke.</p>



<p>All participants answered a questionnaire evaluating stress during a one-month period. Those with stroke were instructed to recall how stressed they felt in the month before their stroke.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The survey asked 10 questions - one of which was, “In the last month, how often have you felt that you were unable to control the important things in your life?” - and each question offered response options rated from zero to four, with four meaning “very often.”</p>



<p>Combining answers produced an overall stress score, with 0–13 deemed “low stress,” 14–26 “moderate stress,” and 27–40 “high stress.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>On average, people who suffered a stroke logged a stress score of 13, while those who did not have a stroke averaged 10. Overall, 46% of stroke survivors showed at least moderate stress levels, compared to 33% of those in the stroke-free group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stroke-risk-and-moderate-stress-nbsp">Stroke risk and moderate stress&nbsp;</h2>



<p>After accounting for factors such as educational background, high blood pressure, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-has-a-hidden-impact-on-heart-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol</a> consumption, the researchers discovered a striking pattern among younger women.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moderate stress corresponded to a 78% greater stroke risk for women, and high stress was linked with a 6% increase. Yet, in younger men, no association appeared.</p>



<p>“More research is needed to understand why women who feel stressed, but not men, may have a higher risk of stroke,” said Martinez-Majander. </p>



<p>“In addition, we need to further explore why the risk of stroke in women was higher for moderate stress than high stress. Knowing more about how stress plays a role could help us to create better ways to prevent these strokes.”</p>



<p>Though the data point to a heightened risk, the study cannot confirm that stress directly causes stroke. Instead, the results highlight a correlation warranting further examination. </p>



<p>Future inquiries may focus on whether stress mediates other risk factors - such as hormone fluctuations or lifestyle behaviors - that then amplify the likelihood of stroke.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-lifestyle-mechanisms">Possible lifestyle mechanisms</h2>



<p>Chronic stress can trigger an overactive stress response, potentially causing long-lasting effects on blood pressure, inflammation, and metabolic processes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Elevated stress might also reduce opportunities for exercise or encourage unhealthy habits (like poor nutrition or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoking-cigarettes-accelerates-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smoking</a>), thereby intensifying stroke risk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These mechanisms could be particularly pronounced among younger women balancing job demands, financial strains, and other social pressures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-of-the-study">Limitations of the study</h2>



<p>A primary limitation to note is that those under intense stress may have been less inclined to participate in the study, potentially influencing results. Additionally, data collection hinged on self-reports of stress, a subjective measure that may vary between individuals.</p>



<p>Moreover, the study does not prove causation but only demonstrates an association between chronic stress and stroke in younger female participants. </p>



<p>Finally, the analysis focused solely on ischemic strokes lacking a known origin, so the findings might not apply to other stroke types.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, these insights underscore the significance of stress management for younger adults, especially younger women. </p>



<p>Understanding how moderate or high stress could lead to adverse health outcomes may pave the way for tailored prevention strategies - ranging from better mental health support to lifestyle modifications.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-young-women-stress-and-stroke-prevention-nbsp">Young women, stress, and stroke prevention&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While the exact reasons underlying the heightened stroke risk in stressed young women remain unclear, this study calls for closer monitoring of stress levels in clinical settings, alongside routine checks of factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Effective stress-reduction programs or workplace policies to lessen the burden on young women might also reduce future stroke occurrences.</p>



<p>By delving deeper into the physiological and behavioral pathways connecting stress and stroke, researchers can refine their efforts in mitigating risk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For now, these findings point to stress as a meaningful element of stroke vulnerability among younger women, highlighting the need for interventions that tackle chronic stress before it contributes to more severe cardiovascular consequences.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
