<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Giant pandas are full of contradictions. Their distinctive black-and-white fur makes them instantly recognizable, yet it's their diet that puzzles scientists the most. Despite having a digestive system adapted for meat, they survive almost entirely on bamboo.</p>



<p>For most animals, diet follows anatomy. Herbivores have complex stomachs to break down plant fibers, while carnivores have short, simple intestines for digesting protein-rich meat. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-panda-day-recognizing-the-beauty-and-fragility-of-wildlife/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pandas</a>, though, seem to defy this rule. Their guts resemble those of meat-eaters, yet they munch on bamboo for hours every day.</p>



<p>How do they pull this off? Over time, they’ve developed physical features - pseudo thumbs for gripping stalks, flat molars for crushing tough fibers. But physical traits alone don’t explain how they extract enough nutrition from such a limited diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-genes-adapt-to-diet">Can genes adapt to diet?</h2>



<p>Every living thing runs on genetic instructions. DNA stores the blueprint, while RNA carries out the tasks. Among the many types of RNA, one stands out in this case: microRNA (miRNA). Tiny but powerful, microRNA is capable of controlling which genes get activated.</p>



<p>Scientists recently made a startling discovery - miRNA from plants can enter <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-secretly-reshape-landscapes-in-powerful-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>’ bodies through food. </p>



<p>This raises an intriguing question: Could bamboo-derived miRNA influence giant pandas at the genetic level? If so, their diet might be reshaping their biology in ways no one had expected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bamboo-s-influence-on-pandas">Bamboo’s influence on pandas</h2>



<p>A team of Chinese researchers set out to investigate whether plant miRNA from bamboo makes its way into pandas’ blood and affects their genes.</p>



<p>“We showed that plant-derived miRNAs are present in the blood of giant pandas. Our study proved that bamboo used as food for giant pandas does affect the change of giant pandas’ feeding habits," said Dr. Feng Li of <a href="https://www.cwnu.edu.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">China West Normal University</a>.</p>



<p>This suggests something incredible - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancestors-of-giant-pandas-had-a-completely-different-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a> aren’t just physically adapted to eating bamboo. Their genes might be changing in response to their diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-bamboo-alters-panda-biology">How bamboo alters panda biology</h2>



<p>The researchers didn’t just speculate. They took blood samples from seven pandas - three adult females, three adult males, and one young female. </p>



<p>When the experts analyzed the samples, they found 57 different miRNAs that likely came from bamboo.</p>



<p>“MiRNA in bamboo can enter giant pandas’ bodies through diet, be absorbed by the intestine, enter the blood circulation, and then regulate when the giant panda’s RNA transfers information, thus playing a role in regulating the gene expression of giant pandas,” explained Dr. Li.</p>



<p>This means that plant-derived miRNAs don’t just float around uselessly in the bloodstream. They take part in critical biological processes - growth, metabolism, immune response. More than that, they seem to influence how pandas experience food itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regulation-of-taste-and-smell">Regulation of taste and smell</h2>



<p>For pandas, taste and smell are essential. Their diet consists of a single food source, so choosing the right bamboo - nutrient-rich, fresh, and safe to eat - is a matter of survival. It turns out miRNA may be helping with that, too.</p>



<p>“MiRNA in bamboo is also involved in the regulation of smell, taste, and dopamine pathways of giant pandas, all of which are related to their feeding habits,” said Dr. Li.</p>



<p>As pandas eat more bamboo, certain miRNAs build up in their system. Over time, these molecules fine-tune their ability to detect the best bamboo - perhaps even making them crave it. </p>



<p>This could explain how pandas, despite being genetically wired for a carnivorous diet, have fully embraced their bamboo-based lifestyle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-all-pandas-are-affected-equally">Not all pandas are affected equally</h2>



<p>One of the most intriguing aspects of this study? The differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meet-melita-panda-the-black-and-white-crustacean-shrimp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a>. </p>



<p>The researchers found that miRNA levels varied depending on the panda’s age and sex. Some miRNAs, particularly those involved in reproduction, were only present in certain groups.</p>



<p>“Only miRNAs that can specifically play a role in regulating gene expression can remain in the body, and those that do not play a role will be expelled,” noted Dr. Li.</p>



<p>This suggests that miRNA doesn’t affect every panda in the same way. Some molecules influence feeding habits, while others may shape reproductive health or immune function. </p>



<p>The idea that diet-derived miRNA could have such wide-ranging effects is opening up new possibilities for research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-this-change-animal-science">Could this change animal science?</h2>



<p>If bamboo miRNA affects the genes of pandas, could other plants influence other species? Could certain foods help regulate immune responses, metabolism, or even disease resistance in animals?</p>



<p>“Plant miRNAs may also participate in regulating the animal immune system, enhancing animals’ disease resistance,” said Dr. Li.</p>



<p>If scientists can understand how plant-derived miRNA works, they might develop better diets for endangered animals - or even improve human nutrition. Imagine eating food not just for calories and vitamins, but for its ability to directly influence genetic expression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-pandas-and-bamboo">Future research on pandas and bamboo</h2>



<p>There’s still so much left to learn. Scientists need larger studies, more samples, and deeper genetic analysis to fully confirm the role of plant miRNA in pandas. Right now, the evidence is compelling, but not conclusive.</p>



<p>“The giant panda is a very precious national treasure in our country, and blood samples are not easy to get. If possible, we hope to collect blood samples of young pandas who have not yet eaten bamboo for research, and perhaps get more surprising results," concluded Dr. Li.</p>



<p>This research hints at a new frontier in biology - where diet doesn’t just influence health but actively shapes genetic expression. The story of pandas and bamboo is still unfolding, and it may be just the beginning of a much bigger scientific breakthrough.</p>

<p>At first glance, giant glacier ice sheets may seem like immovable barriers. In reality, these colossal formations have quietly shaped the face of our planet through massive floods.</p>



<p>New findings reveal the surprising extent of their power in sculpting landscapes. This sets the stage for how <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/neoproterozoic-era" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neoproterozoic</a> conditions might have sparked shifts in ocean chemistry.</p>



<p>The study, led by Professor Chris Kirkland from Curtin University’s Frontier Institute for Geoscience Solutions, explains the link between melting ice and mineral release. </p>



<p>Professor Kirkland and his colleagues observed that as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-threaten-global-water-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glacial</a> erosion scoured deeper layers of rock, key elements found their way into ancient oceans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glacier-floods-reshaped-earth-s-surface">Glacier floods reshaped Earth’s surface</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.281.5381.1342" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scientists</a> once believed <a href="https://www.astronomy.com/science/snowball-earth-the-times-our-planet-was-covered-in-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snowball Earth</a> events occurred when ice covered much of the planet’s surface, reducing normal weathering. Fresh data suggests glaciers may have done more than merely blanket continents.</p>



<p>One recent <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2014378117?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analysis</a> showed how subglacial grinding exposed buried minerals, including uranium. This brought about new avenues for chemical reactions in Earth’s early seas.</p>



<p>During these ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glacier-melting-threatens-global-water-supplies-and-coastal-communities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meltdown periods</a>, floods released dissolved metals that altered marine environments. This shift gave evolving life forms new resources for metabolic processes.</p>



<p>When the ice receded, nutrient levels surged, and ocean conditions changed. Many researchers suggest that these transformations opened the door for more complex organisms to emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glaciers-impact-on-ancient-floods">Glaciers' impact on ancient floods</h2>



<p>To test these ideas, the team analyzed <a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsw/lithosphere/article/3/4/304/145596/Detrital-zircon-geochronology-and-sedimentary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">detrital zircon</a> grains found in certain rock layers. These zircon crystals recorded a jump in older sedimentary input at glaciogenic boundaries.</p>



<p>Evidence points to a spike in uranium content during peak erosion. This suggests that glacial movement dramatically influenced how radioactive minerals cycled through marine systems.</p>



<p>“This research is a stark reminder that while Earth itself will endure, the conditions that make it habitable can change dramatically. These ancient climate shifts demonstrate that environmental changes, whether natural or human-driven, have profound and lasting impacts,” said Professor Kirkland. </p>



<p>As massive ice sheets melted, they unleashed vast floods that carried minerals and chemical elements, including uranium, into the oceans. This surge of materials altered ocean chemistry during a period when more complex life was beginning to emerge.</p>



<p>Ancient floods may have rearranged entire ecosystems across continents. Experts point out that similar environmental upheavals occurred at various points in Earth’s history. Recognizing them helps experts build more accurate models for our future climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-implications-of-the-research">Modern implications of the research</h2>



<p>Changes happening today might shift habitats in unpredictable ways. Many scientists emphasize the importance of learning from these events to plan sustainable strategies.</p>

<p>“Understanding these past events can help us better predict how today’s climate changes might reshape our world,” said Professor Kirkland. Such insights continue to shape environmental science and guide long-term decision-making.</p>

<p>The concept of tight links between land, sea, and atmosphere is a recurring theme in geology. A subtle change in one sphere can trigger unexpected responses in another.</p>

<p>Communities today may not see glacier floods on the scale of ancient times. Nevertheless, tracking modern ice dynamics can shed light on possible long-term trends.</p>

<p>Researchers remain cautious, pointing out that while Earth’s processes are slow, they can still produce major results over millions of years. Lessons from the Neoproterozoic era remind us that adaptation is key to survival.</p>



<p>Further studies are planned to investigate younger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astonishing-glacier-retreat-in-the-arctic-signals-climate-disaster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glacial episodes</a>. Teams hope to identify patterns of erosion and mineral release in more recent geological periods.</p>



<p>Refining these datasets could clarify how climate shifts have historically coincided with bursts of biological innovation. This knowledge might prove relevant as humans grapple with rapid environmental transformations.</p>

Ancient glaciers unleashed floods that reshaped the planet

<p>Mars has fascinated observers for centuries with its striking red hue, shining brightly in our night skies. Research from multiple space agencies suggests that this distinctive color comes primarily from iron in the planet's rocks, which contributes to its dusty appearance.</p>



<p>Despite decades of exploration, we still do not know exactly why the surface of Mars appears red. A new study suggests that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-seeks-a-faster-way-to-bring-mars-samples-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars’s earliest environment</a> may hold the key to understanding its famous color.</p>



<p>Adomas Valantinas, a postdoctoral researcher at <a href="https://www.brown.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brown University</a>, began this research at the <a href="https://www.unibe.ch/index_eng.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bern</a> in Switzerland. </p>



<p>“What we want to understand is the ancient Martian climate, the chemical processes on Mars - not only ancient - but also present,” explained Valantinas. </p>



<p>“Then there’s the habitability question: Was there ever life? To understand that, you need to understand the conditions that were present during the time of this mineral formation.”</p>



<p>Along with collaborators, he compared data from multiple spacecraft and tested basalt mixtures with various iron oxides in the lab.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-s-red-dust-may-come-from-water">Mars’s red dust may come from water</h2>



<p>Scientists have often linked Mars’s color to hematite, a type of iron oxide believed to form under dry conditions. </p>



<p>However, the latest <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56970-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> points to ferrihydrite, a water-rich iron mineral that can only arise in the presence of cool liquid water.</p>



<p>Ferrihydrite can retain hints of water in its molecular structure, providing a record of damp conditions long ago. </p>



<p>By testing rock powders in a specialized laboratory setup, the team discovered that ferrihydrite, combined with basalt, replicated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-year-on-mars-avalanches-icy-explosions-and-the-arrival-of-spring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian</a> dust more convincingly than other mixes.</p>



<p>“These new findings point to a potentially habitable past for Mars and highlight the value of coordinated research between NASA and its international partners when exploring fundamental questions about our solar system and the future of space exploration,” said Geronimo Villanueva from NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a> in Greenbelt, Maryland, and co-author of this study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-environment-of-mars">Shifting environment of Mars</h2>



<p>“We were trying to create a replica <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-has-spectacular-glowing-clouds-at-sunset/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian</a> dust in the laboratory using different types of iron oxide,” said Valantinas.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>If ferrihydrite took shape when Mars had a thicker atmosphere and steady surface water, then the planet’s environment transitioned earlier than scientists once believed. </p>



<p>This suggests Mars was once very different from its dry, cold self today, noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Mars now has a thin atmosphere that makes liquid water on its surface improbable for long stretches. </p>



<p>Past rover missions including <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Curiosity</a> and Opportunity found signs of ancient streams and lakes, but current conditions are much less forgiving.</p>



<p>The presence of ferrihydrite indicates that water likely existed on Mars when the mineral first formed. </p>



<p>Many experts believe that these liquid conditions faded away several billion years ago as Mars lost much of its atmospheric protection.</p>

<p>Wind is still a dominant force on Mars, shaping and distributing dust across vast distances. Over time, these movements broke down iron oxides and spread them around the planet.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-storms-can-engulf-the-entire-planet-of-mars-but-how/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Persistent dust storms</a> continue to swirl, obscuring ground views and leaving rovers coated in fine debris. </p>



<p>Despite the harsh environment, the original water-rich signature of ferrihydrite may remain locked in the dust grains.</p>

<p>This latest ferrihydrite finding strengthens the argument that Mars underwent a cool and moist period well before it dried out.</p>

<p>“We eagerly await the results from upcoming missions like ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover,” said Colin Wilson, ESA’s <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Mars_Express" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars Express</a> project scientist. He expects the future findings to shed more light on Mars’s watery transformation.</p>

<p>In the hidden corners of the world, caterpillars and ants have a remarkably specialized relationship. The caterpillars secrete a sweet, nectar-like substance that ants feed on, and the ants often protect the growing caterpillars from predators.</p>



<p>This interesting relationship, which exists between ants and the larvae of some species of the Riodinidae family (metalmark butterflies), is so particular that each species of caterpillar interacts with only one species of ant.</p>



<p>Scientists have now investigated the complex mechanisms of this mutualistic partnership. </p>



<p>They show that chemical signals and sweet secretions determine whether the ant response is one of protection or destruction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caterpillar-protection-from-ants">Caterpillar protection from ants</h2>



<p>In tropical forests, caterpillars provide an important food source to many insectivores. Caterpillar mortality is inevitably high, unless the adult butterfly lays its eggs on a plant that is inhabited by the correct species of ant. </p>



<p>The research was conducted by Luan Dias Lima during her postdoctoral studies at the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto School of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters (<a href="https://www.ffclrp.usp.br/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FFCLRP-USP</a>). </p>



<p>The ants and caterpillars were collected at the Serra das Araras Ecological Station in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed the chemical signals produced by caterpillars. The goal was to understand how ants can identify specific types of caterpillars as those to protect or those to kill.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that this relationship is delicately balanced as each <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/treasure-map-will-help-experts-find-new-ant-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species of ant</a> recognizes only one species of caterpillar as worthy of protection. </p>



<p>The ants will kill any other caterpillars, even if they secrete the sweet liquid that is believed to promote protection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-signals-and-sweet-secretions">Chemical signals and sweet secretions</h2>



<p>In the experiments, the researchers focused on caterpillars of the species&nbsp;<em>Juditha molpe</em>, which live in harmony with ants of the species&nbsp;<em>Dolichoderus bispinosus</em>.</p>



<p>The team also studied caterpillars of the species&nbsp;<em>Nymphidium chione</em>, which are found only where there are ants of the species&nbsp;<em>Pheidole biconstricta</em>.</p>



<p>They analyzed the cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) present on the ants, caterpillars and plants. CHCs are chemical compounds that are found in the coverings of plants and insects, and play a vital function in waterproofing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-silent-language-decoding-the-chemical-signals-of-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communication</a>, and species recognition.</p>



<p>"We found insect and plant CHCs to be quite different from each other. In caterpillars, they signal food for ants. The caterpillars in our experiment offered a sweet secretion, allowing them to be recognized and protected by specific ant species," explained Lima, the study’s first author. </p>



<p>This sugary secretion not only promotes recognition but also cements the partnership between these species by offering the ants a source of food. </p>



<p>In return for the nectar, the ants defend the caterpillars from predators, thus improving their chances of survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-ants-turn-hostile">When ants turn hostile</h2>



<p>However, when the researchers mixed up the ant-caterpillar pairings, the harmonious alliance turned hostile, and destroyed the delicate balance that sustains this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-symbiotic-relationships-evolve-between-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">symbiotic relationship</a>.</p>



<p>At first, the unfamiliar ants showed little interest in the caterpillars, seemingly indifferent to their presence. They ignored them until they discovered the caterpillar organ that secretes the nectar, which momentarily piqued the ants' curiosity.</p>



<p>Their curiosity soon turned to aggression, however, and they began to behave erratically, opening their mandibles and biting the larvae. What started as a potential new alliance quickly devolved into a deadly confrontation.</p>



<p>"Almost all of the caterpillars were killed during this pair-switching treatment. Soldiers of the species <em>P. biconstricta</em> even used their strong mandibles to cut <em>J. molpe</em> into pieces," said Lima.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-importance-of-the-right-partnership">The importance of the right partnership </h2>



<p>Why are caterpillars relying on ants when things can go so badly wrong? It turns out that ant protection is so important to the caterpillars that adult female butterflies lay eggs only on plant species colonized by the right ant species.</p>



<p>The life of the developing young caterpillars depends on their protection from ants. Without this protection, predators would destroy them.</p>



<p>In the future, the scientists aim to investigate whether CHCs also serve as a deterrent against other natural enemies like parasitoids.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-caterpillar-ant-relationships">Evolution of caterpillar-ant relationships </h2>



<p>The exclusivity of these caterpillar-ant partnerships raises intriguing questions about their evolutionary origins. </p>



<p>Scientists suggest that these relationships may have developed through a long process of co-evolution, where both species adapted to each other over time.</p>



<p>One theory proposes that ancestral caterpillars, once vulnerable to predation, evolved the ability to secrete nectar as a survival strategy, and gradually refined their chemical signals to align perfectly with specific ant species.</p>



<p>In turn, ants learned to recognize these caterpillars as a valuable food source, strengthening the mutual dependence between them.</p>



<p>The evolution of such specialized interactions likely resulted from a long history of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-rules-natural-selection-change-significantly-often-daphnia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural selection</a>. </p>



<p>Caterpillars that failed to match their chemical profiles to local ants faced higher risks of mortality, while those that adapted found a niche where they could thrive.</p>



<p>By studying these ancient alliances, researchers hope to uncover broader patterns in insect evolution and symbiosis, and to shed light on how cooperation between different species shapes ecosystems.</p>

<p>Few ocean mysteries capture as much fascination as&nbsp;whale songs, the melodies produced by giant sea creatures. Recent findings suggest these&nbsp;whale songs&nbsp;can offer unique clues about shifting conditions deep below the surface.</p>



<p>Scientists have long recognized that <a href="https://us.whales.org/whales-dolphins/what-is-baleen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baleen whales</a> emit structured <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-whales-use-songs-to-hide-from-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sound signals</a> to maintain contact across staggering distances. </p>



<p>These signals may also serve as a key to understanding variations in whale foraging patterns, according to a new study led by John Ryan from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (<a href="https://www.mbari.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MBARI</a>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-whale-songs-the-basics">Understanding whale songs - the basics</h2>

<p>The experts noted that this shift coincided with local jumps in key prey resources, such as krill and anchovy, and took place as humpbacks demonstrated an ability to switch food sources.</p>

<p>This correlation suggests that whale songs might function as an unexpected barometer of ecosystem health.</p>



<p>These results may motivate future projects to use passive acoustic monitoring as an early alert system for changes in marine life. </p>



<p>Interpreting whale song data in real time could help managers identify potential feeding hotspots or track unusual shifts in the food web.</p>

<p>Love is often seen as a driving force in human relationships, but could it also shape intelligence in the animal kingdom? Scientists have uncovered a surprising connection between cognitive abilities and mating success.</p>



<p>These tiny fish, originally from Central America, are now found in waters worldwide. The new research suggests that intelligence in males plays a crucial role in reproductive success, much like in human relationships where wit and charm often make a difference.</p>



<p>The study reveals that male mosquitofish with better problem-solving skills are more successful in finding mates. This challenges traditional ideas that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-study-intelligent-life-is-likely-very-common-throughout-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intelligence</a> in animals primarily evolves for survival. </p>



<p>Instead, it suggests that brainpower can be just as valuable in securing a mate as it is in avoiding predators or finding food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-male-intelligence-in-reproduction">Role of male intelligence in reproduction</h2>



<p>Male mosquitofish are not just competing for food and shelter; they are also competing for partners. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.anu.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian National University (ANU)</a>  researchers found that males capable of solving complex tasks had a higher chance of mating than their less-intelligent counterparts. This suggests that intelligence provides a direct reproductive advantage.</p>



<p>Lead author Dr. Ivan Vinogradov explained that cognitive abilities likely evolved because they helped males locate and attract females, increasing their chances of producing offspring. </p>



<p>This process, known as sexual selection, plays a crucial role in shaping intelligence in certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-flightless-birds-are-more-intelligent-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intelligence-beyond-survival">Intelligence beyond survival</h2>



<p>For many years, scientists believed that intelligence in animals evolved primarily through natural selection. Smarter animals had better chances of survival because they could find food, escape predators, and adapt to new environments.</p>



<p>“Evolution of intelligence in animals has long been thought to have been driven by natural selection. Animals that were better at problem solving were more adept at gathering food, finding shelter, and avoiding predators and hence lived longer,” Dr. Vinogradov explained.</p>



<p>“They then passed on these genes to their offspring, helping future generations become smarter over time."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bottom-line-intelligence-is-attractive">Bottom line - Intelligence is attractive</h2>



<p>But there is another possible explanation for the evolution of intelligence: the quality of braininess is attractive to the opposite sex. </p>



<p>A better brain might help an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-aliens-could-detect-earth-what-would-they-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal</a> find more mates, have more sex, and eventually produce more offspring.</p>



<p>Dr. Vinogradov and his collaborators suggest that intelligence in mosquitofish may partly have evolved through sexual selection as well. </p>



<p>Usually, the pressure of sexual selection is stronger on males than females because, at any given time, there are more males seeking mates than there are females ready to breed.</p>



<p>During this form of selection, traits that boost mating and fertilization success become more common over generations, as the genes for the traits are passed on to offspring. </p>



<p>“Our study suggests that intelligence in mosquitofish isn’t only driven by their need to find food or avoid predators, but also by the complex challenges of finding love. This shows that, much like humans, love conquers all,” remarked Dr. Vinogradov.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-abilities-of-mosquitofish">Cognitive abilities of mosquitofish</h2>



<p>To understand how male intelligence affects mating success, researchers designed a series of underwater tests. These tests assessed the problem-solving abilities of male mosquitofish. </p>



<p>The fish had to navigate mazes, figure out how to move around transparent barriers, and remember different colored spots. Those that completed the challenges were rewarded.</p>

<p>“Our findings imply that the evolution of cognitive abilities may have been driven by sexual selection for males who gained more mating opportunities,” study co-author Professor Michael Jennions said.</p>



<p>“Something about these males seemingly gave them an edge in securing mating opportunities. Perhaps females recognized and preferred smarter males, or maybe smarter males were better at chasing the females and forcing them to mate, a common, if unpleasant, practice in mosquitofish."</p>



<p>More observations and analyses are needed in order to establish differences in the mating behavior of the smarter males. </p>

<p>New research from <a href="https://global.toho-u.ac.jp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Toho University</a> in Japan suggests that visceral fat - the deep fat stored around organs - does more than just pad the waistline. It may actually help keep the brain functioning as we age.</p>

<p>CX3CL1 production in belly fat was found to help keep BDNF levels stable, but with age, both CX3CL1 and BDNF levels decline.</p>

<p>To validate the fat-brain link, the Toho University scientists manipulated CX3CL1 levels in mice through experiments. </p>



<p>When they artificially lowered CX3CL1 in younger mice, signs of premature brain aging were noted, as BDNF levels dropped considerably. On the other hand, when older mice were injected with extra CX3CL1, BDNF levels rose again, restoring some of the brain's youthful resilience. </p>



<p>This indicates that CX3CL1 and BDNF play crucial roles in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-time-and-space-interact-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> aging.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-stress-hormones">The role of stress hormones</h2>



<p>The reasons behind a decline in CX3CL1 production are linked to stress hormones - cortisol in humans and corticosterone in mice. These hormones regulate various bodily functions, including CX3CL1 production.</p>



<p>"Glucocorticoids boost CX3CL1 production. An enzyme in belly fat called 11β-HSD1 reactivates inactive forms of glucocorticoids and keeps them active in cells, promoting glucocorticoid-dependent expression of CX3CL1," noted Dr. Yoshinori Takei, one of the study's authors. </p>



<p>However, with aging, 11β-HSD1 levels decline, leading to a slowdown in CX3CL1 production, a drop in BDNF levels, and consequent cognitive decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-perception-of-belly-fat">Changing perception of belly fat</h2>



<p>This discovery shifts our traditional views on belly fat. While it is linked to serious conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, this research suggests that visceral fat is not just a storage unit. It plays an active role in brain function. </p>

<p>Earth has never been a stranger to changes in the ice age cycle. </p>



<p>Around 2.5 million years ago, the planet settled into a rhythm - glaciers advanced, then melted back, over and over. The last big freeze ended about 11,700 years ago, leaving us in a warm, stable period. But how long will this last?</p>



<p>If history followed its usual script, the next ice age would arrive in roughly 10,000 years. That’s what a new study suggests. A team of researchers, including scientists from UC Santa Barbara, has traced the subtle shifts in Earth’s orbit - its wobbles and tilts that are so slight they seem insignificant.</p>



<p>Yet, over thousands of years, these changes have rewritten the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lessons-from-the-ice-age-how-climate-change-reshapes-plant-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet’s climate</a> again and again. Their findings, published in <em>Science</em>, reveal a strikingly predictable pattern in Earth’s natural cycles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-subtle-mechanics-of-a-changing-climate">Subtle mechanics of a changing climate</h2>



<p>The team combed through a million years of climate records, tracking how ice sheets across the Northern Hemisphere expanded and shrank. </p>



<p>They compared those shifts to the temperature of deep ocean waters, which represent cold storage in terms of Earth’s climate history. Then, they lined it all up with data about variations in Earth’s orbit.</p>



<p>It turns out that every major climate shift has followed a script dictated by these orbital quirks.</p>



<p>“We found a predictable pattern over the past million years for the timing of when Earth's climate changes between glacial ‘ice ages’ and mild, warm periods like today, called interglacials,” explained <a href="https://www.geol.ucsb.edu/people/faculty/lorraine-lisiecki" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lorraine Lisiecki</a>, a professor in UCSB’s Earth Science Department.</p>



<p>Some orbital changes signaled the end of an ice age, while others set the stage for a new one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-pattern-hidden-in-plain-sight">A pattern hidden in plain sight</h2>



<p>Scientists have long suspected that Earth’s orbit plays a role in glacial cycles. The idea dates back over a century. But proving it has taken time. Not until the mid-1970s did data begin to confirm the connection. Even then, the details remained murky.</p>



<p>Now, thanks to this new study, those details are much clearer.  </p>



<p>“We were amazed to find such a clear imprint of the different orbital parameters on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-ice-caps-may-only-exist-because-of-unusual-climate-shifts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate record</a>. It is quite hard to believe that the pattern has not been seen before,” expressed Stephen Barker, a professor at <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cardiff University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-the-next-ice-age-on-hold">Is the next ice age on hold?</h2>



<p>Looking at the past 900,000 years, the team uncovered a repeating pattern. Left to its own devices, Earth would remain in this warm interglacial period for several more millennia before the next deep freeze began.</p>



<p>“The pattern we found is so reproducible that we were able to make an accurate prediction of when each interglacial period of the past million years or so would occur and how long each would last,” Barker stated. This discovery confirms that climate changes over tens of thousands of years are anything but random.</p>



<p>But there’s a catch. This natural rhythm assumes that nothing interferes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humans-have-changed-the-natural-ice-age-cycle">Humans have changed the natural ice age cycle</h2>



<p>“And because we are now living in an interglacial period – called the Holocene – we are also able to provide an initial prediction of when our climate might return to a glacial state,” noted Chronis Tzedakis, a professor at University College London.</p>



<p>However, there is a problem. Human activity has already thrown the system off course.</p>



<p>“But such a transition to a glacial state in 10,000 years’ time is very unlikely to happen because human emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere have already diverted the climate from its natural course, with longer-term impacts into the future,” added Gregor Knorr from the Alfred Wegener Institute.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead">Looking ahead</h2>



<p>The research team isn’t stopping here. They plan to refine their predictions, calibrating past climate changes to create a clearer picture of what <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timeline-of-life-ice-ages-gave-evolution-a-kick-start/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s climate</a> should look like over the next 10,000 to 20,000 years. </p>



<p>Combined with modern climate models, this data could reveal the full extent of human influence on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disastrous-climate-changes-of-the-last-ice-age-could-happen-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a>.</p>



<p>“Now we know that climate is largely predictable over these long timescales, we can actually use past changes to inform us about what could happen in the future,” Barker said. “This is something we couldn’t do before with the level of confidence that our new analysis provides.”</p>



<p>Understanding these cycles matters. It’s not just about predicting the next ice age - it’s about understanding how our choices today may reshape the climate for millennia to come.</p>

<p>Aging affects every part of the body, but the brain holds the key to how well we navigate our later years. Some people maintain sharp cognition well into their 80s and 90s, while others experience rapid mental decline much earlier. Understanding why this happens has long been a challenge for scientists.</p>



<p>A remarkable study has now introduced a revolutionary way to measure how fast the brain is aging with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Unlike previous methods that provided a single estimate of brain age, this approach calculates the rate of decline over time.</p>



<p>By tracking how quickly the brain changes between two MRI scans, researchers can determine an individual’s "pace of aging."</p>



<p>“This is a novel measurement that could change the way we track <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parenting-may-help-keep-the-brain-younger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain health</a> both in the research lab and in the clinic. Knowing how fast one’s brain is aging can be powerful," said Andrei Irimia, an associate professor at the <a href="https://gero.usc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology</a>.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-age-vs-chronological-age">Biological age vs. chronological age</h2>



<p>Chronological age measures time since birth, but biological age reflects how fast an individual’s body and brain are aging. </p>



<p>Some people experience aging at a slower or faster rate than their peers. Earlier methods only provided a static snapshot of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mothers-pass-down-x-chromosomes-that-accelerate-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> age, missing important information about ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The new technique addresses this gap by analyzing two MRI scans from the same person at different times. By comparing these scans, researchers can calculate the rate of change and determine whether someone’s brain is aging faster or slower than expected.</p>



<p>“The pace of brain aging conveys the rate of aging-related alteration in neurobiological system integrity,” wrote the researchers. “For example, faster pace reflects faster adverse cognitive changes contributing to morbidity and mortality.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-of-blood-based-aging-tests">Limits of blood-based aging tests</h2>



<p>Some studies have attempted to measure biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-25-years-of-research-revealed-about-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> through blood samples. However, this method does not provide an accurate picture of brain aging.</p>



<p>“The barrier between the brain and the bloodstream prevents blood cells from crossing into the brain, such that a blood sample from one’s arm does not directly reflect methylation and other aging-related processes in the brain,” explained Professor Irimia.</p>



<p>To overcome this challenge, researchers at the University of Southern California trained their AI model using MRI scans from thousands of cognitively normal adults. The model was then tested on independent groups, including patients with Alzheimer’s disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-the-pace-of-brain-aging">Measuring the pace of brain aging</h2>



<p>This new approach examines changes between two MRI scans over time. Instead of estimating brain age at a single point, the AI system determines how much aging has occurred between scans and calculates the rate of decline.</p>



<p>The AI model achieved a mean absolute error of just 0.16 years when predicting brain aging in cognitively normal adults. In comparison, the best traditional model had an error of 1.85 years - more than ten times worse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-reveals-differences-in-brain-aging">AI reveals differences in brain aging</h2>



<p>Beyond tracking the pace of aging, the researchers identified key differences between sexes, age groups, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-reveals-the-secret-to-keeping-your-brain-young/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive conditions</a>.</p>



<p>“The 3D-CNN also generates interpretable ‘saliency maps,’ which indicate the specific brain regions that are most important for determining the pace of aging,” said Paul Bogdan, associate professor at the USC <a href="https://viterbischool.usc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Viterbi School of Engineering</a>.</p>



<p>For women, brain aging was most prominent in regions such as the right precentral gyrus, superior parietal lobules, and precunei. Men, however, exhibited more aging-related changes in the left transverse frontopolar gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus.</p>



<p>People in their 50s showed aging in different regions compared to those in their 70s. Younger individuals had more decline in the left lateral temporal lobe and right medial occipital lobe. Meanwhile, those in their 70s experienced faster aging in the right central and postcentral gyri.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-brain-aging-to-cognitive-decline">Linking brain aging to cognitive decline</h2>



<p>The study also found that individuals with faster brain aging had greater declines in cognitive function over time.</p>



<p>“Rates of brain aging are correlated significantly with changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aging-hotspot-found-in-the-brain-may-hold-the-key-to-longevity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive function</a>,” Irimia said. “So, if you have a high rate of brain aging, you’re more likely to have a high rate of degradation in cognitive function, including memory, executive speed, executive function, and processing speed.”</p>



<p>This was particularly evident in scores from the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS13). People whose brains were aging more quickly showed greater errors in cognitive tests, indicating a strong link between brain structure and cognitive function.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-at-risk-individuals">Identifying at-risk individuals</h2>



<p>Perhaps the most significant finding was that the pace of brain aging could predict future cognitive impairment. Among the study participants, those who later developed cognitive decline had a significantly higher rate of brain aging than those who remained cognitively normal.</p>



<p>“The alignment of these measures with cognitive test results indicates that the framework may serve as an early biomarker of neurocognitive decline,” Bogdan said. “Moreover, it demonstrates its applicability in both cognitively normal individuals and those with cognitive impairment.”</p>



<p>Early identification of at-risk individuals could allow for preventive measures, such as lifestyle changes or medical interventions, before symptoms appear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-brain-health-monitoring">Future of brain health monitoring</h2>



<p>Irimia believes this model could help detect brain aging before cognitive symptoms emerge. With new Alzheimer’s treatments available, early intervention may be crucial in improving outcomes.</p>



<p>“One thing that my lab is very interested in is estimating risk for Alzheimer’s; we’d like to one day be able to say, ‘Right now, it looks like this person has a 30% risk for Alzheimer’s.’ We’re not there yet, but we’re working on it,” Irimia said. </p>



<p>“I think this kind of measure will be very helpful to produce variables that are prognostic and can help to forecast Alzheimer’s risk. That would be really powerful, especially as we start developing potential drugs for prevention.”</p>



<p>Since men and women showed different patterns of brain aging, this model could also help researchers understand why they face different risks for neurodegenerative diseases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>The study had some limitations. Because it calculates an average pace of aging over a set period, it may not capture recent changes in brain health. </p>



<p>Additionally, the model performed better for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-sleep-habits-may-age-the-brain-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitively</a> normal individuals than for those with Alzheimer’s, likely because it was trained on healthy adults.</p>



<p>Future studies with larger and more diverse populations could improve the model’s accuracy. However, even with its limitations, this research represents a major step forward in understanding how brain aging progresses over time.</p>



<p>By focusing on how fast the brain is changing rather than just its current state, this research could lead to more personalized medical interventions. Maintaining brain health isn’t just about age - it’s about how quickly aging is taking place.</p>

<p>Robots are learning in a way that was once thought to be exclusive to humans - by watching themselves.</p>



<p>A recent study shows that robots can use simple video footage to understand their own structure and movement. This ability allows them to adjust their actions and even recover from damage without human any intervention.</p>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a> have developed a method that enables robots to achieve a deeper understanding of their own bodies. </p>



<p>Instead of relying on engineers to create detailed simulations, these robots watch their own movements, using a regular camera, and teach themselves how their bodies work.</p>



<p>By developing "self-awareness," these machines could revolutionize automation, making robots more independent, adaptable, and efficient in real-world environments like homes, factories, and disaster zones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-from-observation">Learning from observation</h2>



<p>"Like humans learning to dance by watching their mirror reflection, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-can-now-learn-to-accomplish-any-task-by-watching-videos-or-observing-people/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robots now use raw video</a> to build kinematic self-awareness," explained study lead author Yuhang Hu, a doctoral student at the Creative Machines Lab at <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a>.</p>



<p>"Our goal is a robot that understands its own body, adapts to damage, and learns new skills without constant human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dog-human-bond-helps-guide-social-robot-programming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">programming</a>."</p>



<p>Traditionally, robots are first trained in digital simulations. These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/real-life-star-trek-holodeck-created-for-robots-using-chatgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">simulations</a> help the robots understand movement before they are deployed in the real world. </p>

<p>“The better and more realistic the simulator, the easier it is for the robot to make the leap from simulation into reality,” said Professor Hod Lipson, chair of the Department of&nbsp;Mechanical Engineering.</p>



<p>However, designing these simulations is a time-consuming and complex task that often requires expert knowledge.</p>



<p>The researchers found a way to bypass this step by allowing robots to build their own simulations based on input from watching themselves move.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-self-awareness-in-robots">Self-awareness in robots</h2>



<p>The study’s breakthrough came from using deep neural networks to infer 3D movement from 2D video. </p>



<p>This means the robot can understand its own shape and how it moves, without needing sophisticated sensors. </p>



<p>More importantly, it can detect changes in its body - such as a bent arm - and adjust its actions accordingly. This kind of adaptability has real-world benefits.</p>



<p>"Imagine a robot vacuum or a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-glimpse-of-the-future-robots-in-nursing-homes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personal assistant bot</a> that notices its arm is bent after bumping into furniture," said Hu. </p>



<p>"Instead of breaking down or needing repair, it watches itself, adjusts how it moves, and keeps working. This could make home robots more reliable - no constant reprogramming required."</p>



<p>In industrial settings, this capability could be just as valuable. For example, a robot arm in a car factory could get knocked out of alignment and need to be readjusted.</p>



<p>"Instead of halting production, it could watch itself, tweak its movements, and get back to welding, which would cut downtime and costs. This adaptability could make manufacturing more resilient," noted Hu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-robots-need-self-awareness">Why robots need self-awareness </h2>



<p>As robots become more integrated into everyday life, their ability to operate independently will be essential. </p>



<p>“We humans cannot afford to constantly baby these robots, repair broken parts and adjust performance. Robots need to learn to take care of themselves if they are going to become truly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-with-space-to-think-will-become-more-useful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">useful</a>,” said Professor Lipson. “That’s why self-modeling is so important.”</p>



<p>This study builds on two decades of research at Columbia University. During this time, the researchers have been developing ways for robots to create self-models using cameras and other sensors.</p>



<p>In 2006, their robots could only generate simple stick-figure-like simulations. A decade later, they advanced to higher-fidelity models using multiple cameras. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-self-sufficient-robots">The future of self-sufficient robots</h2>



<p>Now, for the first time, a robot has managed to build a complete kinematic model of itself using just a short video clip from a single standard camera - input that is similar to looking in a mirror.</p>



<p>“We humans are intuitively aware of our body; we can imagine ourselves in the future and visualize the consequences of our actions well before we perform those actions in reality,” explained Professor Lipson.</p>



<p>“Ultimately, we would like to imbue robots with a similar ability to imagine themselves, because once you can imagine yourself in the future, there is no limit to what you can do.”</p>



<p>The ability of robots to self-model and adapt is a significant step forward. It could lead to more resilient machines that require less human oversight, and pave the way for smarter, more independent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/household-robots-now-with-added-common-sense-and-ability-to-self-correct/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robots in homes</a>, factories, and beyond.</p>

Robots can now learn like humans, using self-awareness

Robots are learning in a way that was once thought...

<p>In the wild, every meal is a gamble. Animals like lizards must constantly weigh&nbsp;their&nbsp;options - play it safe or take a risk. The wrong choice could mean starvation. But the right one? A feast.</p>



<p>For some creatures, survival is about consistency. They take the sure thing, never gambling on an uncertain future. Others, when faced with starvation, throw caution to the wind.</p>



<p>A recent study led by Maria Thaker, professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (<a href="https://ces.iisc.ac.in" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CES</a>) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), reveals that certain tropical lizards fall into the latter category. Under the strain of hunger, they roll the dice - risking it all for a chance at a bigger meal.</p>



<p>The study challenges a long-standing belief. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/desert-lizards-struggle-as-global-warming-raises-their-energy-needs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reptiles</a> have often been dismissed as slow, instinct-driven animals. But this research suggests otherwise. These creatures, despite their cold blood, are surprisingly calculating. They don’t just react; they strategize.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hunger-makes-lizards-take-risks">Hunger makes lizards take risks </h2>



<p>Scientists call it the “risk-sensitive foraging hypothesis.” The idea is simple: hunger changes how animals approach risk. When full, they opt for reliable food sources, even if they’re small. When starving, they chase bigger, uncertain rewards.</p>



<p>Birds and mammals have demonstrated this behavior. But reptiles? They’ve largely been overlooked. After all, many can slow their metabolism and enter a state of torpor when food is scarce. But tropical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reptiles-provide-new-clues-about-the-diets-of-extinct-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizards</a> don’t have that luxury.</p>



<p>“Reptiles can slow down their metabolism a lot. So, in food-scarce times like winter, they go into torpor (hibernation) to avoid starving to death,” explained Professor Thaker.</p>



<p>“In the tropics, however, reptiles are exposed to warm temperatures all year round and cannot slow their metabolism down enough to get through tough (food lean) times. We expected that lizards in the tropics should have evolved the ability to assess food options, because if they don’t, they may risk starving to death.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-starving-lizards-make-riskier-choices">Starving lizards make riskier choices</h2>



<p>To test this, the researchers turned to the rock agama (<em>Psammophilus dorsalis</em>), a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deforestation-threatens-the-future-of-8-in-10-lizards/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizard</a> commonly found in and around cities like Bengaluru. These small, fast-moving reptiles navigate both natural and urban landscapes, making them ideal for studying adaptive behavior.</p>



<p>The team devised a straightforward test. First, they split the lizards into two groups. One group received plenty of food, while the other received nothing for 48 hours. </p>



<p>Next, both groups were presented with a choice. One option offered two mealworms, guaranteed. The other was a gamble - either zero or four mealworms. Would hunger change their decisions?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risk-taking-lizards">Risk-taking lizards</h2>



<p>The results showed that well-fed lizards stuck to the safe bet - two mealworms, no surprises. But the starved lizards? They took the risk, picking the unpredictable option far more often.</p>



<p>“We found that well-fed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-lizard-day-2024-celebrating-our-scaly-companions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizards</a> played it safe, opting for the guaranteed two mealworms option,” said study lead author and PhD student Avik Banerjee.</p>



<p>“On the other hand, starved lizards took greater risks, frequently choosing the variable option which has the potential to get them four mealworms. Remarkably, both groups of lizards ended up with similar net food gains by the end of the trials, indicating that the different strategies worked.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-survival-strategy-not-a-fluke">A survival strategy, not a fluke</h2>



<p>The study reshapes how we see reptile decision-making. Unlike their cold-climate cousins, which rely on metabolic slowdowns, tropical lizards must stay active. Their survival depends on making smart, timely choices.</p>



<p>And this goes beyond instinct. The lizards remembered their options, assessed the risks, and made choices based on their needs. That’s strategy, not reflex.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lizards-remember-past-choices">Lizards remember past choices</h2>



<p>For decades, intelligence has been linked primarily to mammals and birds. But <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lizards-rely-on-trees-so-what-happens-when-they-disappear/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reptiles</a> are proving to be far more complex than previously assumed.</p>



<p>“We think that humans have an excellent ability to assess our environment and take calculated risks when needed. But lizards can too,” said Professor Thaker.</p>



<p>“The fact that the rock agamas can remember different options and make appropriate choices to secure their survival is rather cool. We are surrounded by very clever and calculating animals.”</p>



<p>Lizards, often overlooked, might just be thinking more than we ever gave them credit for. And if they can weigh risks and rewards - who knows what else they’re capable of?</p>

<p>City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge"><strong>Disturbing connections emerge</strong></h2>



<p>Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters"><strong>Timing matters</strong></h2>



<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>



<p>These findings, published in <em><a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a></em>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.</p>



<p>As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. <p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
