<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>The ability of robots to navigate aquatic environments is crucial for a variety of applications, such as mapping pollution levels and monitoring the health of coral reefs. However, challenges remain.</p>



<p>The commotion from the noisy propellers of these underwater devices can cause unnecessary disturbances, and even harm wildlife.</p>



<p>The natural obstacles in these aquatic settings - like plants, underwater animals, and floating debris - further test the navigation abilities of these robotic swimmers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-robot-with-big-potential">Tiny robot with big potential</h2>



<p>A team of experts has introduced a novel solution to these issues. They have developed a compact, nimble robot that is capable of navigating tight corners and carrying payloads much heavier than itself. </p>



<p>Remarkably, the aquatic robot is smaller than the size of a credit card and weighs only 6 grams (0.2 ounces).</p>



<p>This tiny device is designed to work in confined environments, making it perfect for tasks like inspecting waterborne machines and studying the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pesticides-travel-far-and-wide-endangering-aquatic-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aquatic ecosystem</a> of compact spaces, like rice fields.</p>



<p>Herbert Shea, head of <a href="https://sti.epfl.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPFL</a>'s Soft Transducers Lab, elaborated on the challenges of developing aquatic robots.</p>



<p>“In 2020, our team demonstrated autonomous insect-scale crawling robots, but making untethered ultra-thin robots for aquatic environments is a whole new challenge. We had to start from scratch, developing more powerful soft actuators, new undulating locomotion strategies, and compact high-voltage electronics,” said Shea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-movements-of-marine-flatworms">Movements of marine flatworms</h2>



<p>Breaking away from traditional propeller-based systems, this new robot propels forward with silently undulating fins that are inspired by the movements of marine flatworms.</p>



<p>This novel design, coupled with its feather-weight structure, allows the robot to float on the water’s surface and blend into its natural surroundings without causing a stir.</p>



<p>Florian Hartmann, a former EPFL researcher who is now a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, in Stuttgart, Germany, offered an interesting perspective.</p>



<p>“Our design doesn’t simply replicate nature; it goes beyond what natural organisms can achieve," he said.</p>



<p>By oscillating its fins up to 10 times faster than marine flatworms undulate, this new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-robotic-fish-developed-to-collect-microplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robotic swimmer</a> achieves impressive speeds of 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) per second, which is equivalent to 2.6 body lengths per second.</p>



<p>With four artificial muscles driving the fins, the robot exhibits unprecedented maneuverability, which allows controlled backward and sideways swimming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-applications-of-aquatic-robots">Potential applications of aquatic robots</h2>



<p>The researchers developed a compact control system that charges the robot’s actuators with up to 500 volts at a power of 500 milliwatts - four times less than that of an electric toothbrush.</p>



<p>Despite using a high voltage, the tiny robot's low currents and shielded circuitry make it perfectly safe for its environment.</p>



<p>The light sensors on the robot act as its eyes, enabling it to detect and follow underwater light sources autonomously .</p>



<p>The potential applications of this swimming robot include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-of-things-tech-will-transform-ocean-data-collection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecological studies</a>, pollution tracking, and precision agriculture. However, the researchers are not finished with the robot just yet.</p>



<p>“We aim to extend operating times and enhance autonomy. The fundamental insights gained from this project will not only advance the science of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbird-wings-the-future-of-robotic-flight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bioinspired robotics</a> but also lay the foundation for practical, lifelike robotic systems that harmonize with nature,” said Hartmann.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-bioinspired-robotics">The future of bioinspired robotics</h2>



<p>The team now plans to focus on expanding this miniature aquatic robot’s capabilities. They wish to integrate more advanced sensors, improve battery life, and refine autonomous decision-making.</p>



<p>Future iterations could feature enhanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-design-and-build-walking-robots-in-seconds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI-driven</a> navigation, which would allow these tiny swimmers to collaborate in groups (much like schools of fish) for large-scale environmental assessments.</p>



<p>In the realm of precision agriculture, such robots could assist in monitoring irrigation systems and identifying nutrient imbalances in flooded crops. </p>



<p>They may also play a role in underwater infrastructure inspections, assisting in detecting pipeline leaks or assessing the condition of offshore wind farms.</p>



<p>By combining cutting-edge robotics with insights from nature, researchers are not only overcoming long-standing challenges in aquatic exploration but also paving the way for a new generation of intelligent, adaptable, and environmentally harmonious robotic systems.</p>

<p>Water is essential to life, driving our economies and supporting the foundation of ecosystems. Yet, despite its critical role, many regions are facing severe water shortages.</p>



<p>Add to this the plight of a warming planet, and the result is an urgent global crisis that needs effective water management strategies.</p>



<p>Research conducted by Lorenzo Rosa of <a href="https://carnegiescience.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carnegie Science</a> and Matteo Sangiorgio of the <a href="https://www.polimi.it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polytechnic University of Milan</a> sheds light on the growing water crisis under various climate scenarios.</p>



<p>The experts emphasize a critical need for robust <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fog-harvesting-could-ease-water-shortages-in-the-worlds-driest-places/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> policies, with insights that could prove instrumental in future preparations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-water-gap-issue">The water gap issue</h2>



<p>A "water gap" happens when people need more water than what is available. This problem affects billions of people around the world.</p>



<p>The amount of water needed for drinking, farming, and industry is often more than what nature can provide. When people use too much water without allowing time for it to be replenished, natural sources like rivers, lakes, and aquifers start to dry up.</p>



<p>Over time, this continuous overuse creates a serious water shortage, making it harder for communities, farms, and businesses to get the water they need.</p>



<p>"Water scarcity is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity this century. About 4 billion people reside and about half the world's irrigated agriculture is in regions that experience <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-drought-has-caused-crisis-levels-of-food-and-water-scarcity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> scarcity for at least one month each year," said Rosa.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-water-shortages">Climate change and water shortages</h2>



<p>The water <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-now-the-driving-force-behind-droughts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scarcity</a> issue is further complicated by climate change. Rising temperatures destabilize rainfall patterns, shift water cycles, and deplete natural freshwater sources. </p>



<p>This adds substantial strain to already fragile water systems, elevating the risk of shortages in urban and rural areas.</p>



<p>According to Rosa, higher temperatures accelerating evaporation rates can deplete water supplies, even in regions that have historically been stable. Unpredictable weather patterns causing droughts and floods further complicate water management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-demand-amidst-population-growth">Water demand amidst population growth</h2>



<p>Population explosion further strains water resources with expanding cities requiring greater quantities for drinking, sanitation, and industrial usage. </p>



<p>Agricultural production must also increase to feed the growing population, making water conservation and management even more critical.</p>



<p>"We must be able to balance environmental resilience and the growing need for water in a warming world with a burgeoning population," noted Rosa.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-temperatures-and-water-shortages">Rising temperatures and water shortages</h2>



<p>The research paints a troubling picture. The baseline global water gap stands at nearly 458 billion cubic meters (121 trillion gallons) annually.</p>



<p>The water gap is expected to increase by 6% under 1.5°C (2.7°F) warming and by 15% under 3°C (5.4°F) warming.</p>



<p>"Even relatively modest increases in the water gap can put pressure on ecosystems and lead to severe shortages for agricultural use, resulting in food insecurity," said Rosa.</p>



<p>Water resource management needs quick action and future planning. Building better systems to store and share water can help solve the problem. Advances in technology present possibilities like desalination of seawater and wastewater treatment and reuse.</p>



<p>Agriculture, a major consumer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global water</a>, must adapt by shifting to crops that require less water or employing advanced irrigation techniques.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-solutions-for-water-shortages">Finding solutions for water shortages </h2>



<p>Rosa's research plays an important role in finding solutions for water shortages. He is exploring ways to make irrigation more efficient so that less water is wasted.</p>



<p>Rosa also investigates how to keep soil moist for longer, which helps crops grow with less water. Another part of his work focuses on improving how water is stored, making sure it is available when needed.</p>



<p>In addition to water management, Rosa also examines how to reduce the harmful effects of fertilizer production on the environment. The goal is to make farming more sustainable, ensuring that future generations can grow food without harming natural resources.</p>



<p>As climate change intensifies, water shortages will continue to be a significant issue across the globe. It is essential for policymakers, researchers, and communities to collaborate on finding effective solutions.</p>



<p>By understanding water scarcity and exploring innovative approaches, we can work toward ensuring a sustainable water future.</p>

<p>One small yet remarkably significant component found in all mushrooms - beta-glucan - has recently gained the attention of scientists, thanks to its potential role in combating the flu. </p>

<p>In the food and health industry, mushrooms have achieved superfood status due to their nutrient-dense structure of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. Their application in diets worldwide has been shifted from being flavor-based to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-tiny-bacteria-outsmart-the-human-immune-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health-based</a>.</p>



<p>Mushrooms are linked to improved brain health, as evidence shows that they may help protect against cognitive decline. Mushrooms also contribute to better digestive health with their fiber content.</p>



<p>A new study sheds light on a special role of mushrooms in health maintenance beyond what was previously recognized. </p>



<p>According to the research, mushrooms might assist the body in keeping infections at bay and preventing harmful inflammation. The experts report that mushrooms might render flu infections less damaging. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-mushrooms-fight-the-flu">How mushrooms fight the flu</h2>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McGill University</a> in Canada investigated the intriguing effect of beta-glucan on the immune system response to flu. </p>



<p>The findings indicate that the natural fiber can help people manage flu infections by inhibiting the out-of-control inflammation that usually leads to complications.</p>



<p>"It is tempting to hypothesize that the levels and composition of fungi in an individual could influence how their immune system responds to infections, in part because of beta-glucan," noted study co-author and immunologist Maziar Divangahi.</p>



<p>This is an optimistic departure from conventional flu <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/temperatures-impact-the-immune-system-of-wild-monkeys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treatment</a> protocols.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keeping-immunity-in-check">Keeping immunity in check</h2>



<p>Beta-glucan, present in fungi cell walls, has been shown to possess immune-stimulating activity. But the study identifies a significant role - it maintains immune balance.</p>



<p>Instead of provoking an out-of-control immune reaction, beta-glucan provokes a controlled reaction within the body, restricting uncontrolled inflammation, which is typically the main threat in extreme cases of the flu.</p>



<p>The researchers tested beta-glucan on mice, infecting some with the flu virus after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-lockdowns-weakened-our-immune-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treatment</a> with beta-glucan.</p>



<p>What they found was remarkable. The treated mice had very little lung inflammation, improved lung function, and a very low probability of becoming seriously ill or dying, even though the mice received no beta-glucan.</p>



<p>Another fascinating finding of the study is the impact of beta-glucan on neutrophils, a type of immune cell. </p>



<p>Normally, neutrophils induce inflammation, which has the consequence of exacerbating flu infections. Beta-glucan alters their function and makes them resistant to inducing over-inflammation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-flu-prevention-with-mushrooms">Future of flu prevention with mushrooms</h2>



<p>For years, conventional flu medications have targeted antiviral drugs that directly assault the virus. Antiviral drugs, though, have limitations. Certain strains of the flu develop resistance, and not every patient responds to antivirals.</p>



<p>The study proposes another approach that centers on enhancing the body's immunity against infection, thus opening a new chapter in the treatment of flu.</p>



<p>The study reinforces the idea that edibles can have medicinal benefits. While further research is needed, mushrooms may soon shift from a nutritious ingredient to a vital component for enhancing immunity and protecting against severe respiratory diseases.</p>



<p>As scientific research continues to uncover the immune-boosting benefits of mushrooms, they may soon become a vital component of flu prevention <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reprogramming-the-immune-system-to-attack-cancer-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">protocols</a>. </p>



<p>Ultimately, mushrooms are more than just a nutritious food - they are a powerful ally in strengthening the immune system.</p>

<p>Global warming has already contributed to an alarming decline in plant species. By some estimates, around 600 plant species have vanished since 1750, which is twice the number of animal species lost in the same period.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet, questions persist: which plant species are most vulnerable to climate change, and how does changing biodiversity influence interactions between plants?&nbsp;</p>



<p>A research team from the <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfred Wegener Institute</a> (AWI) tackled these issues by analyzing centuries of plant genetic material preserved in lake sediments.</p>



<p>By focusing on the dramatic warming at the end of the last ice age - approximately 15,000 to 11,000 years ago - the experts gained novel insights into how flora reorganized during what they consider the last major mass extinction event prior to today. </p>



<p>The findings, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-025-56176-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Communications</em></a>, may help us gauge what could lie ahead in our current era of rapid climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-clues-from-ancient-plant-dna"><strong>Climate clues from ancient plant DNA</strong></h2>



<p>“Everyone knows that the woolly mammoth went extinct, but virtually no-one mentions the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-earths-most-endangered-plants-from-extinction-proving-difficult-botanic-gardens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> that were lost at the end of the last ice age,” said Ulrike Herzschuh, a scientist at AWI. “Until recently, we lacked suitable methods for investigating the extinction of plant species in detail.”</p>



<p>Traditionally, scientists studied fossil pollen to learn about past vegetation, but pollen cannot reliably reveal extinct species or pinpoint which ones died out.</p>



<p>The AWI team employed advanced methods to scrutinize old DNA fragments deposited in lake sediments taken from Alaska and Siberia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Using cutting-edge methods, we analysed old DNA from sediment cores taken from lakes in Alaska and Siberia, which allowed us to reconstruct the changes in vegetation in these regions,” Herzschuh explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Those cores, containing up to 30,000-year-old plant DNA, were enriched, sequenced, and matched with existing genetic databases in specialized labs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-interactions-changed-with-the-climate"><strong>Plant interactions changed with the climate</strong></h2>



<p>The scientists used their data to chart where and when plant species emerged or disappeared across Siberia and Alaska, unlocking details about how plant communities evolved toward the end of the last ice age.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’ve now been able to determine in detail when and where species appeared and disappeared in Alaska and Siberia,” said Herzschuh. </p>



<p>“Our research shows that the composition of plant species changed substantially at the end of the last ice age, and that this was accompanied by fundamental changes in the ecological conditions.”</p>



<p>Crucially, they found a link between temperature shifts and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-climates-force-plants-to-compete-with-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant-to-plant interactions</a>. During colder periods, plant species often supported one another, while in warmer periods, they primarily competed. </p>



<p>“In the DNA from the lake sediments, we found e.g. many cushion plants, which most likely supported the expansion of other species by forming sheltered habitats,” Herzschuh noted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the modern Arctic, however, this helpful role might speed the cushion plants’ own decline.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Since the warming of the Arctic has already progressed quite far, woody plants can survive even in the high latitudes. The cushion plants could facilitate their spreading, hastening their own extinction in the process,” explained Herzschuh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-disappearance-of-entire-vegetation-types"><strong>The disappearance of entire vegetation types</strong></h2>



<p>The end of the last ice age triggered the loss of key types of vegetation, as the researchers confirmed using their new method. For instance, the mammoth steppe - a vast, grassy biome widespread during the ice age - vanished during the Earth’s transition to the current warm phase.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Identifying which species ceased to exist posed a particular challenge since modern DNA databases only catalog living plants.</p>



<p>“To identify the species that no longer existed, we had to use a trick,” Herzschuh said. They sifted through all DNA fragments in the sediment cores and systematically ruled out those resembling any species still alive. What remained were sequences likely belonging to extinct plants.&nbsp;</p>



<p>From this analysis, the experts concluded that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-perennial-grasses-could-help-curb-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grasses</a> and shrubs are among those most at risk in a warming climate, while woody plants typically expand under warmer conditions. A surprising discovery was the time lag. </p>



<p>“That means the full impacts of today’s human activities might not become apparent until the distant future,” Herzschuh added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-today-s-arctic"><strong>Implications for today’s Arctic</strong></h2>



<p>The researchers emphasize that their findings offer essential reference data for assessing ongoing Arctic shifts, where the climate is changing more rapidly than almost anywhere else on Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their two new studies illustrate how warming influences not only individual species but also their ecological interactions - and how these changes may lead to permanent shifts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-biodiversity-will-get-a-boost-from-rising-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>.</p>



<p>“Our studies show how important it is to understand biodiversity and ecological interactions, also in the long term, in order to better predict the impacts of climate change,” Herzschuh said. “Using the information locked in old DNA from sediments, we can gain the fundamental knowledge needed to do so.”</p>



<p>By establishing extinction rates for ancient plants and examining how temperature-induced stressors remolded their communities, the research provides a valuable lens through which to view future risks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team hopes that comparing past extinctions with current conditions can guide policymakers and conservationists in predicting - and possibly mitigating - the fate of today’s Arctic and global ecosystems, which face many of the same pressures that once toppled the woolly mammoth and its lesser-known plant neighbors.</p>

<p>A new study reveals that Arabia historically received higher levels of rainfall, shattering notions about the region’s long-term arid climate stability.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by experts from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. </p>

<p>Contrary to the present barren desert, Arabia boasted of lush greenery thousands of years ago, sustained by consistent rainfall. </p>



<p>The region, home to a diverse array of wildlife, including lions, leopards, and wolves, was far wetter than it is now in the last 2,000 years.</p>



<p>The researchers investigated the region's historical rainfall patterns. They found that rainfall was twice as much as it is today 200 years ago, and five times higher 400 years ago.</p>



<p>The results of the study indicate that the region has always been subjected to extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-summer-rainfall-events-have-increased-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> fluctuations.</p>

<p>The swift pace of urbanization in the Middle East raises concerns about the potential aftermath of unexpected alterations in rainfall patterns. <p>The unique chemistry of the brine splendidly preserved the sediment layers for centuries. These layers offer precise records of past rainfall patterns, enabling a more accurate understanding of long-term climate trends.</p>



<p>Recent trends have shown a rise in extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasting-the-floods-new-clues-about-extreme-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> events in the Middle East, heightening the region's vulnerability to climate change. </p>



<p>The winter of 2024 saw disastrous flooding across the Arabian Peninsula, emphasizing the need for climate adaptation to be prioritized by policymakers, urban planners, and scientists.</p>



<p>“This is a key record to fill in the history of the Middle Eastern climate. What it tells us is that the climate, both the average and the extremes, can change dramatically in this region, and the assumption of long-term climate stability in future development is not a good one,” noted Amy Clement, a professor at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-equipping-for-a-unpredictable-future">Equipping for a unpredictable future</h2>



<p>The study accentuates the need for improved planning and adaptation, as human development in the region becomes increasingly exposed to extreme weather consequences. </p>



<p>It also highlights the criticality of considering long-term climate patterns while designing new infrastructure and cities.</p>



<p>Scientific advancements have significantly bolstered climate research, permitting a more accurate understanding of historical climate patterns.  </p>



<p>“Utilizing the technology on OceanXplorer in combination with multidisciplinary experts in ocean and climate science we can further our understanding of the linkages between ocean systems and long-term weather and climate trends, to help at-risk areas be ready for the future,” noted Mattie Rodrigue, science program director at <a href="https://oceanx.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OceanX</a>.</p>

<p>The study, A 1,600-Year Record of Extreme Rainfall in Northern Arabia, is pivotal in understanding how the climate of the Arabian Peninsula has evolved over the centuries. </p>



<p>While we might not have the power to control natural climate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astonishing-global-heat-in-january-2025-defied-climate-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changes</a>, it is within our capacity to determine how effectively we adapt to these variations.</p>



<p>Therefore, it is imperative for governments, researchers, and urban planners to collaboratively create a future that effectively navigates the challenges posed by a rapidly changing climate, drawing valuable lessons from the past.</p>

<p>Improvements in human life expectancy throughout Europe have slowed significantly since 2011, with England experiencing the largest slowdown, according to a new study.<br></p>



<p>The research, led by the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of East Anglia</a> (UEA), identifies poor diets, physical inactivity, obesity, and the COVID-19 pandemic as major factors contributing to this shift. </p>



<p>The experts warn that instead of living increasingly longer than older generations, many people now face the possibility of earlier mortality.</p>



<p>“Advances in public health and medicine in the 20th Century meant that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/women-in-the-us-now-live-6-years-longer-than-men-as-life-expectancy-gap-widens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life expectancy</a> in Europe improved year after year. But this is no longer the case,” said professor Nick Steel, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decreases-in-life-expectancy">Decreases in life expectancy </h2>



<p>From 1990 to 2011, lower death rates from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-worsens-cardiovascular-health-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular diseases</a> and cancers steadily increased average life expectancy across the continent. But the study found that between 2011 and 2019, progress stagnated as major risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol either rose or stopped improving in virtually all European nations.</p>



<p>“We found that deaths from cardiovascular diseases were the primary driver of the reduction in life expectancy improvements between 2011–19. Unsurprisingly, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-expectancy-fell-sharply-during-the-covid-19-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Covid pandemic</a> was responsible for decreases in life expectancy seen between 2019–21,” explained Steel.</p>



<p>Researchers highlight that while improved treatments for high cholesterol and blood pressure have helped, they haven’t offset the harmful effects of increasingly unhealthy lifestyles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As the pandemic further eroded longevity figures after 2019, the concern is that people may begin dying younger unless governments take robust action.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-government-policies-targeting-health-risks">Government policies targeting health risks </h2>



<p>Among 19 European countries studied, England showed the sharpest reduction in life expectancy growth following 2011, a trend mirrored to varying degrees in the rest of the UK.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In contrast, some nations, including Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, and Belgium, managed better resilience. They also had stronger policies targeting health risks and a more favorable record in controlling major cardiovascular threats.</p>



<p>“In contrast, England and the other UK nations fared worst after 2011 and also during the Covid pandemic, and experienced some of the highest risks for heart disease and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a>, including poor diets,” Steel said. </p>



<p>“This suggests that stronger government policies are needed to reduce major health risks including obesity, poor diet, and low physical activity - to improve population health over the long term.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-human-life-expectancy-still-improve">Can human life expectancy still improve?</h2>



<p>The study emphasizes that rising longevity is still possible. “Life expectancy for older people in many countries is still improving, showing that we have not yet reached a natural longevity ceiling,” Steel explained. By focusing on preventing early deaths - chiefly among younger adults - there is ample room to reduce mortality.</p>



<p>“These results are a cause for concern especially here in the UK, but also some hope,” said John Newton, a scientist at the European Center for Environment and Human Health at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>.</p>



<p>“We should be concerned because many European countries including the UK are showing such poor progress but hopeful because addressing the underlying causes of major illnesses appears to be effective if only improvements in the key risks can be sustained.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-need-for-action">Urgent need for action</h2>



<p>Sarah Price, National Director of Public Health at <a href="https://www.england.nhs.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHS England</a>, said the findings highlight a need for stronger measures to tackle cardiovascular disease and cancer at their roots.</p>



<p>“The slowdown in life expectancy improvements, particularly due to cardiovascular disease and cancer, highlights the urgent need for stronger action on the root causes - poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity.”</p>



<p>Although the NHS offers weight management programs and widespread blood pressure checks to curb these conditions, Price emphasized that government intervention is crucial to address the broader societal drivers of obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. “We cannot treat our way out of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childhood-obesity-rates-are-surging-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obesity</a> crisis, and we need to stem it at source,” she said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reversing-the-human-life-expectancy-trend">Reversing the human life expectancy trend</h2>



<p>Overall, the study found that while the European public enjoyed steady life expectancy gains for decades, those gains have lately diminished - mostly due to unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, and the pandemic’s toll.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the researchers, reversing this trend depends on decisive actions, from healthier lifestyle promotion to better policy frameworks.</p>



<p>In short, a coordinated public health response that prioritizes dietary changes, physical activity, and tackling obesity may help restore the upward curve in life expectancy. Otherwise, Europe’s younger generations risk shorter lifespans than those who came before them.</p>

<p>Building collapses in one of the world’s oldest port cities have dramatically increased in recent years, and researchers are pointing to sea-level rise and seawater intrusion as key drivers. </p>



<p>The alarming trend highlights the vulnerability of historic coastal hubs to even small changes in ocean levels.</p>



<p>In the port city of Alexandria, located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, the rate of building collapses has jumped from approximately one per year to around 40 per year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Study co-author Essam Heggy is a water scientist at the <a href="https://www.usc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southern California</a> (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering. </p>



<p>“The true cost of this loss extends far beyond bricks and mortar. We are witnessing the gradual disappearance of historic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-coastal-cities-around-the-world-could-disappear-under-rising-seas-by-2100/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coastal cities</a>, with Alexandria sounding the alarm. What once seemed like distant climate risks are now a present reality,” said Heggy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-seas-and-intensifying-storms-nbsp">Rising seas and intensifying storms&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Alexandria has a history stretching back more than two millennia and has survived earthquakes, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/20-years-later-remembering-the-worlds-deadliest-tsunami/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tsunamis</a>, and conquests. Yet modern challenges appear to be outpacing the city’s traditional resilience. </p>



<p>“For centuries, Alexandria’s structures stood as marvels of resilient engineering, enduring earthquakes, storm surges, tsunamis and more. But now, rising seas and intensifying storms - fueled by climate change - are undoing in decades what took millennia of human ingenuity to create,” said Sara Fouad, a landscape architect at the <a href="https://www.tum.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Munich</a> (TUM) and the study’s first author.</p>



<p>Even slight sea-level increments - just a few centimeters - can prove destructive for coastal cities, weakening the ground beneath buildings and eroding essential infrastructure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These dangers are not confined to Alexandria. Along many shorelines worldwide, scientists have identified the gradual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sinking</a> of coastal terrain, coupled with rising seas, which exacerbates the risk of flooding and saltwater infiltration into structures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarm-bells-for-other-coastal-regions">Alarm bells for other coastal regions</h2>



<p>The latest research on Alexandria parallels <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.ads8163" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">findings</a> from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> and <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a>, which have documented areas of California - such as the San Francisco Bay Area, Central Valley, and parts of Southern California - also sinking. </p>



<p>Though these changes may be measured in mere centimeters, they heighten flood risks significantly when combined with coastal erosion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our study challenges the common misconception that we’ll only need to worry when sea levels rise by a meter,” Heggy said.&nbsp;"However, what we’re showing here is that coastlines globally, especially Mediterranean coastlines similar to California’s, are already changing and causing building collapses at an unprecedented rate.”</p>



<p>Such phenomena demonstrate how cities on the Mediterranean - long admired for their coastal beauty - face problems that echo those now emerging in other shoreline communities, from Los Angeles to Naples.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rising seas and shifting shorelines threaten everything from ancient monuments to modern housing developments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-collapse-of-alexandria-s-coastline">The collapse of Alexandria’s coastline</h2>



<p>To quantify the growing crisis, the research team employed a comprehensive three-part strategy. First, they produced a detailed digital map of collapsed buildings in six districts of Alexandria’s historic core, among the most densely populated areas of the city.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The map includes location, size, construction materials, foundation depth, and floor count. Information was compiled via site visits, governmental records, news stories, and private company reports spanning 2001 to 2021.</p>



<p>Second, the group examined satellite images and historical maps from 1887, 1959, and 2001 to chart how parts of the city’s 50-mile shoreline have receded by tens of meters in recent decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By calculating the annual rate of coastal retreat, they found that the diminished coastline is raising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-depletion-is-accelerating-but-it-is-not-inevitable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater</a> levels, allowing saltwater to permeate deeper into the ground beneath buildings.</p>



<p>Third, they conducted a chemical isotope analysis of soil samples to pinpoint where seawater intrusion is undermining structural foundations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our isotope analysis revealed that buildings are collapsing from the bottom up, as seawater intrusion erodes foundations and weakens the soil. It isn’t the buildings themselves, but the ground underneath them that’s being affected,” said Ibrahim H. Saleh, a soil radiation scientist at <a href="https://www.alexu.edu.eg/index.php/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alexandria University</a> and one of the study’s co-authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-nature-based-response"><strong>A nature-based response</strong></h2>



<p>Among the proposed solutions is a nature-based coastal defense strategy, which involves creating sand dunes and planting vegetation along the shoreline.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach, the researchers argue, could help slow incoming seawater and keep groundwater levels from rising to the point where they compromise building footings. Such methods have proven effective in other regions where climate-driven <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fighting-coastal-erosion-electricity-turns-sand-into-a-sea-wall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coastal erosion</a> is intensifying.</p>

<p>“Historic cities like Alexandria, which represent the cradle of cultural exchange, innovation and history, are crucial for safeguarding our shared human heritage,” Heggy said. “As climate change accelerates sea level rise and coastal erosion, protecting them isn’t just about saving buildings; it’s about preserving who we are.”</p>



<p>While the study’s authors urge immediate action in Alexandria, they also view the city as a bellwether for many other coastal urban centers. With targeted mitigation measures and renewed focus on nature-based solutions, it may still be possible to safeguard these locations - even as global warming ushers in an era of volatile seas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers hope that policy initiatives and international collaboration can help retain the architectural marvels of Alexandria and other ancient coastal sites for generations to come.</p>

<p>In many parts of the world, traditional landscapes once dominated by wild herbivores are undergoing dramatic changes.&nbsp;Livestock grazing has replaced native grazers, leading to shifts in soil composition, plant diversity, and the delicate balance of predator-prey interactions. </p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grazing-animals-have-an-unexpected-role-in-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transformations</a> are often subtle, unfolding over years, but their consequences can be far-reaching.</p>



<p>A long-term study in the Spiti valley of the Himalayas sheds light on how this shift is affecting ground-dwelling arthropods, including spiders, ticks, and mites. </p>



<p>The findings reveal a concerning trend - spider populations are dwindling while disease-carrying organisms such as ticks and mites are thriving. </p>



<p>These changes have direct implications for biodiversity, ecological stability, and even human health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-livestock-grazing-the-basics">Global livestock grazing - the basics</h2>



<p>The expansion of livestock grazing areas has been reshaping landscapes around the world for decades. As global demand for meat and dairy products grows, ranchers and agribusinesses clear more land for cattle, sheep, and other grazing animals. </p>



<p>In places like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-rainforest-is-approaching-widespread-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazon rainforest</a>, vast stretches of trees are cut down to create pastures, contributing to deforestation and habitat loss. </p>



<p>Grasslands, savannas, and even arid regions are also being converted into grazing land, often at the cost of native ecosystems. </p>



<p>Some regions are turning to regenerative grazing techniques, which involve rotating animals across different pastures to mimic natural grazing patterns and allow the land to recover. </p>



<p>Others are exploring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/increasing-plant-based-food-production-would-have-extremely-positive-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant-based</a> alternatives and lab-grown meat to reduce pressure on the planet. </p>



<p>The challenge is balancing food production with environmental sustainability, and as global appetites grow, finding solutions becomes even more urgent.</p>



<p>While livestock farming plays a major role in feeding the world, its rapid expansion raises a multitude of concerns, many of which we will discuss in this article.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spiders-in-livestock-grazed-areas">Spiders in livestock-grazed areas</h2>



<p>The researchers found that livestock-grazed areas had fewer spiders but more grasshoppers, ticks, and mites. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rethinking-arachnid-evolution-the-surprising-history-of-spiders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spiders</a> play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling insect populations.</p>



<p>Study co-author Sumanta Bagchi is an associate professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (<a href="https://ces.iisc.ac.in" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CES</a>), Indian Institute of Science (IISc).</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/save-a-spider-day-protecting-our-connection-with-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spiders</a> are predators; their ecological roles are similar to wolves, lions, and tigers. A low abundance of spiders can release grasshoppers from predator control, and lead to many downstream changes in an ecosystem. Together, these effects alter material and energy flow,” explained Bagchi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-replacing-wild-herbivores-with-livestock">Replacing wild herbivores with livestock</h2>



<p>Bagchi and his team have studied livestock’s impact on Spiti valley <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seaweed-supplements-reduce-methane-in-grazing-cattle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> for over 15 years. They note that wild herbivores like yak and ibex once thrived globally but are now confined to protected areas. Elsewhere, domesticated animals dominate.</p>



<p>For the study, the researchers tracked over 25,000 arthropods from 88 taxa, including spiders, ticks, mites, bees, wasps, and grasshoppers. </p>



<p>They monitored fenced plots with either wild or domestic grazers and analyzed soil moisture, pH, and vegetation biomass.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupting-arthropod-habitats">Disrupting arthropod habitats</h2>



<p>Shamik Roy, former PhD student at CES and co-first author, pointed out that arthropods have long-established ties with native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restored-grasslands-bring-more-peace-to-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grazers</a>.</p>



<p>“Vegetation and soil biotic and abiotic variables are intertwined in complex ways that we are still unravelling. Arthropods heavily depend on them for food and home, an association developed over centuries with native grazers in the ecosystem,” noted Roy.</p>



<p>Replacing these grazers disrupts arthropod populations. The study found that spiders declined in livestock-grazed areas, while ticks and mites flourished. </p>



<p>The reasons behind spider declines are unclear, but reduced prey availability and vegetation changes may contribute.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-disease-carrying-arthropods">Increasing disease-carrying arthropods</h2>



<p>Pronoy Baidya, former PhD student at CES and co-first author, highlights a concerning trend. </p>



<p>“One of the most surprising observations was the massive difference in tick and mite abundance between native grazers and livestock,” Baidya said.</p>



<p>Eighty percent of cattle worldwide carry ticks, which poses risks to both animals and humans. “This is a major concern for zoonotic diseases and One Health,” said Baidya.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-livestock-grazing-and-vegetation">Livestock grazing and vegetation</h2>



<p>Livestock grazing affects vegetation structure and soil health in complex ways. The study revealed that areas with domestic grazers had different plant compositions compared to those with native herbivores. </p>



<p>Changes in plant types influence arthropod diversity and alter food availability for different species.</p>



<p>Soil conditions, including moisture and pH levels, also shift under livestock grazing. These changes impact microbial communities, further influencing the ecosystem. </p>



<p>Healthy soil supports diverse vegetation, which in turn sustains a balanced arthropod population.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-and-land-management">Conservation and land management</h2>



<p>To mitigate these effects, the researchers suggest reintroducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grazing-succession-animal-herbivore-mass-migration-serengeti/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">native</a> herbivores and monitoring vector-borne diseases. Conservation policies should focus on balancing livestock grazing and preserving ecosystems.</p>



<p>“Currently, most of the commons are rather mismanaged, allowing people from villages to unsustainably utilise these commons for their livelihoods, and in the process denying the local herbivores their grazing areas,” said Baidya.</p>



<p>“Our study will hopefully be an example which may nudge governments to take serious steps for freeing up the commons first and then starting proper ecological restoration of these lands.”</p>



<p>Restoring wild herbivores and managing grazing lands could help rebuild ecosystems and reduce disease risks. </p>



<p>These changes require action to protect biodiversity and maintain ecological balance. Sustainable land-use practices and better management of grazing areas can prevent further ecological disruption.</p>

Livestock grazing is changing soil, plants, and insect populations

<p>Most people think wrinkles, graying hair, and a few creaks in the knees define aging. Yet scientists have spent decades exploring whether these signs, along with genetic mutations, tell the whole truth about growing older.</p>



<p>Early research suggests that <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/genomics-and-health/epigenetics/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">epigenetics</a> might help us measure how our bodies grow older, but what actually pushes these epigenetic “clocks” forward has been heavily debated.</p>



<p>The answer may involve unexpected links between random genetic changes and the epigenetic patterns found in older cells, according to Dr. Steven Cummings from Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-mutations-control-biological-age">Do mutations control biological age?</h2>



<p>Scientists once thought that DNA mutations were the main culprits behind the decline in health we see with age.</p>



<p>Previous research has shown that somatic mutations, which are genetic changes acquired over a lifetime, occur more often in older tissues. Other studies noted that not all aspects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-every-day-proven-studies-to-delay-biological-aging-in-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> could be blamed on these changes alone.</p>



<p>This curiosity set the stage for new research on the processes sitting “on top” of DNA, known as epigenetic changes. </p>



<p>Epigenetic modifications do not alter the core DNA sequence. Instead, they shift the activity of genes, and appear to follow consistent patterns as people age. Scientists measure these patterns with tests called epigenetic clocks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-random-mutations-fit-in">How random mutations fit in</h2>



<p>The recent study used tumor and noncancerous tissue samples from thousands of patients to see if they could track how mutations and epigenetic marks matched up. </p>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking overlap. Once a random mutation appeared, surrounding CpG sites often showed significant shifts in a specific epigenetic mark called methylation.</p>



<p>The scientists found that mutated spots had a reduced level of methylation. When these changes showed up, many nearby spots either gained or lost methylation too.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the researchers found that the overall methylation patterns reliably tracked a person’s age, hinting at a tight bond between random genetic errors and the chemical marks that define <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36206857/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">epigenetic clocks</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-mutations-speed-up-aging">Do mutations speed up aging?</h2>



<p>“This is very clear evidence of a relationship,” said Dr. Cummings. He emphasized that the correlation between mutations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-the-cellular-mortality-timer-that-dictates-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">epigenetic changes</a> leaves room for two big possibilities. One idea is that both changes are triggered by an unknown source of aging.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another possibility is that somatic mutations gradually push these clocks forward. This would mean that reversing epigenetic changes may not solve the biggest problems associated with aging.</p>



<p>The researchers also noticed that once a cytosine base in DNA gains a methyl group, it becomes more likely to mutate. This can create a chain reaction in which each new mutation influences future epigenetic shifts. </p>



<p>Scientists say more studies will help explain which event happens first, or if both swirl together in a complex cycle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fresh-angles-on-health-and-disease">Fresh angles on health and disease</h2>



<p>Epigenetic clocks have long been used to spot tissues that appear “older” or “younger” than expected for a given person’s chronological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aging-hotspot-found-in-the-brain-may-hold-the-key-to-longevity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">age</a>. </p>



<p>These measurements often show up in discussions of early disease risk or overall lifespan. Such clocks may even prove valuable in predicting which treatments will work best for certain age-related conditions.</p>



<p>Still, experts warn that the actual drivers behind these epigenetic signals need more research. In some labs, investigators plan to create controlled mutations in cultured cells, then watch how epigenetic marks shift over time. </p>



<p>Others hope to follow human subjects over the years, collecting samples at different intervals so that real aging patterns can be observed in action.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-mutations-and-aging">Future research on mutations and aging</h2>



<p>Researchers are also looking at diseases tied to heightened mutation rates. Such conditions might give extra clues about whether these random genetic changes truly lead to faster aging.</p>



<p>Scientists are curious whether preventing new mutations, improving DNA repair, or slowing epigenetic changes can significantly extend a healthy lifespan.</p>



<p>Although there is excitement in the scientific community, finding the exact mechanics behind aging is tricky. More data will help show if both the mutations and epigenetic marks merely act as signals of a deeper aging process.</p>



<p>As Dr. Cummings suggested, if mutations are the actual trigger, then resetting epigenetic clocks alone may not be enough to reduce certain age-related health risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-hope-and-caution">Balancing hope and caution</h2>



<p>For the average person, the concept of “biological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/muscles-defy-aging-with-remarkable-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">age</a>” might still feel like a puzzle. Researchers, however, see these new findings as a chance to broaden our understanding of everything that happens inside aging cells. </p>



<p>Any further understanding of the basic mechanisms that are at play are going to ultimately help to advance the field.</p>



<p>By testing how cells respond to targeted epigenetic modifications, scientists hope to clarify whether adjusting these markers can deliver practical health benefits. Their findings, along with long-term observations of how mutations appear in various tissues, could be vital in refining current anti-aging tools.</p>

Causes of biological aging are much different than we thought

<p>A small weekly dose of moderate to vigorous exercise - just 35 minutes - could significantly lower an older adult’s chances of developing dementia, according to a new study.</p>



<p>Led by the <a href="https://publichealth.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health</a>, the research found that even older people who are frail appear to benefit from this low level of activity. </p>



<p>The results suggest that physical activity is an accessible way for many seniors to protect their cognitive health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-dementia-risk-with-exercise">Reducing dementia risk with exercise</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed data from nearly 90,000 adults living in the United Kingdom. Each participant wore a wrist-based device that recorded their physical activity for a week, and they were then followed over an average period of 4.4 years to see who developed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/risk-of-dementia-is-much-higher-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a>.</p>



<p>The findings were striking: compared to participants who recorded zero moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, those who achieved as little as 35 minutes per week had a 41% reduced risk of being diagnosed with dementia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Greater amounts of physical activity correlated with even lower risks: 60% lower for 35–69.9 minutes, 63% lower for 70–139.9 minutes, and 69% lower for 140 or more minutes.</p>



<p>Study lead author Amal Wanigatunga is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Bloomberg School.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our findings suggest that increasing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fitness-focused-medicine-physical-activity-reduces-chronic-disease-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical activity</a>, even as little as five minutes per day, can reduce dementia risk in older adults,” explained Wanigatunga.</p>



<p>“This adds to a growing body of evidence that some exercise is better than nothing, especially with regard to an aging-related disorder that affects the brain that currently has no cure.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dementia-risks-and-the-role-of-exercise">Dementia risks and the role of exercise</h2>



<p>Dementia, often caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-disease-attacks-the-brain-in-two-separate-phases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s</a> disease, is highly prevalent among older populations - about seven million individuals in the United States alone. One in three people over the age of 85 is affected, and the numbers are expected to rise as the population ages.</p>



<p>Scientists have long studied how lifestyle factors might reduce dementia risk, pointing to better management of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, alongside increased physical activity. However, it has been less clear how small or large an exercise dose should be to help protect the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Current guidelines in both the U.S. and the U.K. recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week (roughly 20 minutes per day). While beneficial, that target may intimidate some older adults - particularly those who are frail or limited by mobility issues.</p>



<p>The new data suggest that even a fraction of the recommended time could deliver meaningful protection against dementia. The researchers took special note of participants who met criteria for “<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flavonol-rich-foods-reduce-the-risk-of-developing-frailty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frailty</a>” or “pre-frailty” and found that low volumes of exercise were associated with lower dementia risk in those groups as well. </p>



<p>“This suggests that even frail or nearly frail older adults might be able to reduce their dementia risk through low-dose exercise,” Wanigatunga said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-limitations-and-future-directions">Study limitations and future directions</h2>



<p>Because this study was not a clinical trial, it cannot conclusively prove that exercise itself prevents dementia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To reduce the possibility of reverse causation - i.e., that undiagnosed dementia caused people to move less - the team repeated their analysis after excluding dementia diagnoses that occurred in the first two years of follow-up.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The protective link between activity and lower dementia risk remained strong, adding credibility to the idea that movement itself helps preserve cognitive function.</p>



<p>The authors call for additional research to confirm these results through randomized clinical trials. They see “low-dose” exercise as a potentially critical step for seniors - especially those who struggle to meet higher targets.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By encouraging just a few minutes per day and building up gradually, more people might achieve at least 35 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity per week and thus lower their odds of cognitive decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dementia-risk-in-older-adults">Dementia risk in older adults</h2>



<p>These findings are particularly relevant given the growing number of older adults worldwide and the significant impact dementia can have on individuals, families, and healthcare systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although some may find it difficult to dedicate 20 minutes each day to exercise, the study demonstrates that even small increments of movement - brief walks, light gardening, or gentle workouts - can add up to better brain health.</p>



<p>For now, the message is clear: a little bit of exercise is better than none at all, and that small effort might yield substantial rewards.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By broadening access to physical activity for older adults - especially those who feel constrained by frailty - health practitioners could take an important step toward reducing the burden of dementia in an aging society.</p>

<p>Scientists recently shared news of a particle event that has sparked excitement in the physics community. One of the most energetic neutrinos ever recorded was observed in the Mediterranean Sea by the ARCA detector of the KM3NeT project.</p>

<p>Neutrinos travel across the universe, slipping through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> and planets without much disturbance. </p>



<p>For decades, scientists have aimed to spot ultra-high-energy neutrinos to shed light on cosmic accelerators. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.km3net.org/about-km3net/collaboration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KM3NeT Collaboration</a> unites more than 360 experts from 68 institutions in 21 countries.</p>



<p>“Neutrinos are one of the most mysterious of elementary particles. They have no electric charge, almost no mass and interact only weakly with matter. They are special cosmic messengers,” said Rosa Coniglione, a researcher at the <a href="https://home.infn.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">INFN National Institute for Nuclear Physics</a>.</p>

<p>KM3NeT is a sprawling setup resting on the seabed, composed of two detectors called ARCA and ORCA. </p>



<p>ARCA is located about 50 miles from <a href="https://www.italia.it/en/sicily/portopalodicapopassero" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portopalo di Capo Passero</a>, Sicily, at a depth of 11,319 feet. ORCA is positioned near Toulon, France, at a depth of 8,038 feet. </p>



<p>Each site serves a distinct goal, with ARCA tuned for high-energy neutrinos and ORCA for lower-energy neutrinos.</p>



<p>The detectors depend on photomultipliers nestled within glass spheres. </p>



<p>When a cosmic neutrino collides with water molecules, faint bluish light appears. The sensors collect that light, letting researchers map the neutrino’s journey.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remarkable-single-muon">Remarkable single muon</h2>



<p>ARCA picked up a single <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/doe-explainsmuons" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">muon</a>, which signaled a neutrino interaction close by. Its path across the detector left a trail that triggered a large number of active sensors. </p>



<p>This confirmed the neutrino was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supernova-dandelion-year-1181-leaves-behind-zombie-star-defying-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic</a> in origin rather than coming from local backgrounds.</p>



<p>“To determine the direction and energy of this neutrino required a precise calibration of the telescope and sophisticated track reconstruction algorithms,” said Aart Heijboer, KM3NeT Physics and Software Manager.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-high-energy-neutrinos">Origins of high-energy neutrinos </h2>



<p>Scientists suggest that such high-energy neutrinos could come from cataclysmic sources like supernova remnants or supermassive black holes.</p>



<p>Interactions between cosmic rays and other matter or photons can also create these neutrinos. </p>



<p>Some of the most energetic cosmic rays in the universe may bump into the cosmic microwave background, producing what researchers call “cosmogenic” neutrinos.</p>



<p>Studying these events may unmask fresh secrets of the universe, offering a direct clue about the places and processes that fling particles to unimaginable energies. </p>



<p>As these neutrinos fly mostly unimpeded from their source, they can deliver information that light or charged particles cannot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advancing-neutrino-astronomy">Advancing neutrino astronomy </h2>



<p>The ARCA site will eventually include 230 detection units, while the ORCA site will have 115. Each unit features 18 high-tech optical modules, and altogether, KM3NeT will span over a cubic kilometer of water.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Miles Lindsey Clark is the KM3NeT Technical Project Manager and research engineer at the CNRS - Astroparticle and Cosmology laboratory in France.</p>



<p>“The scale of KM3NeT, eventually encompassing a volume of about one cubic kilometer with a total of about 200,000 photomultipliers, along with its extreme location in the abyss of the Mediterranean Sea, demonstrates the extraordinary efforts required to advance neutrino astronomy and particle physics,” said Clark.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capturing-a-rare-event">Capturing a rare event</h2>



<p>Though the installation is incomplete, ARCA was able to catch one of the rarest events in nature. With advanced calibration and data analysis, teams extracted the trajectory and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-travels-back-in-time-to-better-understand-supernovae-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">energy details</a> of this neutrino. </p>



<p>Since it most likely entered the water with more than 220 PeV of energy, that single neutrino opens the door to more surprises as KM3NeT continues to grow.</p>



<p>Such an event supports the existence of even higher-energy cosmic neutrinos. Different from lower-energy detections, these ultra-high-energy signals hint that distinct astrophysical engines could drive them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>Teams worldwide aim to see if this was a “cosmogenic” neutrino or if it sprang from an active celestial powerhouse. </p>



<p>Eventually, a bigger fleet of detection units will allow more frequent captures of such signals, improving the odds of pinpointing their origin and clarifying the forces that shape our universe.</p>



<p>“We stand at a frontier where new data will sharpen our understanding of the cosmos,” said a KM3NeT representative. </p>



<p>Each new detection offers a chance to spot patterns and compare them with signals from gamma-ray telescopes and other observatories.</p>

<p>Protons and neutrons stay together in the nucleus and make a stable atomic center, thanks to powerful interactions. For decades, the two-nucleon force was seen as the main player that both attracts these particles and keeps them from smashing too close together.</p>



<p>In a recent paper, researchers have shed light on an overlooked ingredient known as the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0370157320303409" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">three-nucleon force</a>.</p>



<p>The research was led by Professor Tokuro Fukui of <a href="https://www.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyushu University</a>'s Faculty of Arts and Science in Japan. The team investigated the ways in which adding a third player to the mix can change how stable an atom’s center is.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-nucleons-matter">Why nucleons matter</h2>



<p>Nucleons are protons and neutrons. These particles form the central nucleus of each atom and influence whether an element is stable or liable to break down. </p>



<p>Three forces are thought to operate within a nucleus - the strong nuclear force and the electrostatic force (together known as the two-nucleon force) - as well as the weaker three-nucleon force.</p>



<p>Many scientists trace our modern understanding of nuclear structure to the nuclear shell model, which won Maria Goeppert Mayer a Nobel Prize in 1963. </p>



<p>In that model, nucleons fill specific energy levels, much like electrons do, though the underlying physics is more involved.</p>



<p>Nuclear forces also guide how atoms evolve in stars, where new elements can be created through fusion. This process, called nucleosynthesis, powers the production of heavier atoms that eventually spread through space.</p>



<p>Understanding how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cell-nuclei-play-unexpected-role-in-organ-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear forces</a> shape this process can improve models of stellar evolution and element formation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-force-in-atomic-nuclei">Missing force in atomic nuclei</h2>



<p>“Scientists have formed a good understanding of the two-nucleon force and how it impacts nuclear stability,” said Fukui, who is the lead author of the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0370269324003976" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>. </p>



<p>Physicists have spent years fine-tuning models that show how the two-nucleon force functions. However, the three-nucleon force, which operates when three nucleons interact at the same time, has remained less well understood.</p>



<p>The recent study suggests this extra force is surprisingly significant in making the nucleus stronger. The researchers used advanced simulations to see how these interactions change energy levels inside the nucleus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spin-orbit-splitting-and-nuclear-stability">Spin-orbit splitting and nuclear stability</h2>



<p>When nucleons line up their spins with their orbital movement, they settle into a lower-energy state. When their spins oppose their orbits, they climb to a higher energy state.</p>



<p>The differing energies form distinct shells. The study revealed that the three-nucleon force cranks up the energy gap between these shells in larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atomic-nucleus-made-of-quarks-and-gluons-reproduced-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclei</a>.</p>



<p>“This effect is so large that it has almost equal weighting to the impact of the two-nucleon force,” noted Fukui. In carbon-12, which carries 12 nucleons, this gap increased by a factor of 2.5.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-this-force-on-heavier-nuclei">Impact of this force on heavier nuclei</h2>



<p>Heavier atoms have more nucleons, so these interactions become even more critical. If the nucleus has a stable arrangement - sometimes referred to as a magic number configuration - stacking on more neutrons becomes challenging.</p>



<p>When elements fuse inside stars, increasing stability in the nucleus makes the next step of capturing extra neutrons harder. As a result, certain elements might form more slowly or under special conditions.</p>



<p>This research could also impact nuclear physics applications, such as predicting isotopic stability, understanding radioactive decay, and refining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-fission-what-exactly-happens-when-the-nucleus-of-an-atom-splits-in-two/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear energy</a> models. </p>



<p>These findings may help design better reactors or improve predictions about rare isotopes found in cosmic events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-quantum-twists">Unexpected quantum twists</h2>



<p>Another outcome relates to quantum entanglement, a phenomenon better known in electrons and photons. With the three-nucleon force in play, two of the three nucleons can exist in mixed spin states until observed.</p>



<p>This entanglement hints that nucleons might not be so simple to pin down. It raises fresh questions about how these spin states might be measured or harnessed. </p>



<p>Similar effects in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-wobble-how-scientists-manipulated-the-nucleus-of-a-single-titanium-atom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> computing use entanglement for information processing, and researchers wonder if nuclear systems could contribute to future quantum technologies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>Scientists plan to extend these investigations to elements heavier than carbon. More nucleons likely strengthen the three-nucleon force even further, possibly making some atomic nuclei more stable than current models suggest.</p>



<p>These findings could improve predictions for stellar fusion pathways. By refining how we model nuclear interactions, researchers hope to predict which elements form under different cosmic scenarios.</p>

<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
