<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.70017" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Insect Conservation and Diversity</em></a><em>.</em></p>

<p>Scientists recently reported an unexpected deep-sea development in the Pacific: certain metallic rocks seem to be making oxygen in the dark, without light or sunshine, at the bottom of the ocean.</p>



<p>This idea runs counter to the usual belief that oxygen only forms in sunlight through photosynthesis.</p>



<p>Although these findings have stirred debate, the central claim is that potato-sized nodules found thousands of feet below the surface appear to split seawater molecules and release oxygen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oxygen-and-photosynthesis-the-basics">Oxygen and photosynthesis - the basics</h2>



<p>Since the late 1700s, we've been taught that light creates oxygen through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>, a crucial natural process that keeps life on Earth thriving. </p>



<p>Plants, algae, and some bacteria soak up sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. </p>



<p>In the simplest of terms, nature uses light as fuel to produce the oxygen we breathe and keep everything on Earth alive. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-photosynthesis-could-transform-power-generation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Photosynthesis</a> not only gives energy to these organisms but also releases oxygen into the atmosphere, maintaining the perfect balance of gases that most life forms need. </p>



<p>Until the discovery of dark oxygen, it has been commonly accepted knowledge that without light, photosynthesis would grind to a halt, and our planet wouldn’t have the oxygen-rich air we rely on every day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-sea-rocks-making-oxygen">Deep-sea rocks making oxygen</h2>



<p>Exploration in a region called the <a href="https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/18ccz/background/mining/mining.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clarion-Clipperton Zone</a> - where deep-sea mining companies are eyeing metals resources like cobalt and nickel - uncovered <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/ferromanganese-deposit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ferromanganese nodules</a> resting on the ocean floor.</p>



<p>Ferromanganese nodules are like little treasure rocks that settle on the ocean floor, packed with metals such as manganese and iron. </p>



<p>These nodules form slowly over millions of years as minerals from seawater build up in layers around a tiny core, like a shark tooth or a piece of shell.</p>



<p>Think of them as underwater onions, with each layer adding more minerals and creating these cool, rounded shapes.</p>



<p>Researchers suggested that the nodules may produce electric charges that spark electrolysis, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/summer-storms-stir-oxygen-into-the-deep-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">generating oxygen</a> and hydrogen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-the-rocks-produce-oxygen">How do the rocks produce oxygen?</h2>



<p>Early studies raised plenty of questions about the process and the potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-microalgae-show-photosynthesis-is-possible-in-near-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effect on seafloor life</a>. </p>



<p>Leading the push for more answers is <a href="https://www.sams.ac.uk/people/researchers/sweetman-professor-andrew-k/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew Sweetman</a>, a professor at the Scottish Association for Marine Science. </p>



<p>He is running a three-year project to investigate how these nodules might form oxygen in the absence of light. One of his goals is to see if this phenomenon appears in other parts of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our discovery of dark oxygen was a paradigm shift in our understanding of the deep sea and potentially life on Earth, but it threw up more questions than answers,” said Sweetman.</p>



<p>He and his team will also look into whether <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cascading-oxygen-loss-could-endanger-our-oceans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial reactions</a> help release hydrogen, an energy source for certain deep-sea microbes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-freshwater-mysteries">Freshwater mysteries</h2>



<p>Dark oxygen has popped up in other surprising, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-microalgae-show-photosynthesis-is-possible-in-near-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">light-deprived places</a>.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-38523-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emil Ruff</a> detected oxygen in freshwater samples beneath Alberta, Canada. It appeared in groundwater that had been isolated for tens of thousands of years, yet still contained enough oxygen to support life. </p>



<p>“After 40,000 years or 30,000 years (separated from surface processes), there’s no reason really to think that there should be any oxygen left,” remarked Ruff.</p>



<p>He found that special bacteria could produce oxygen on their own by breaking down certain dissolved compounds. </p>



<p>What’s more, Ruff found that the quantity of oxygen produced was enough to sustain other oxygen-dependent microbial life in the groundwater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-dark-oxygen">Challenging dark oxygen</h2>



<p>Not all scientists are in agreement about this dark oxygen discovery. Some deep-sea mining interests challenged Sweetman’s work, saying they have found no such electrical oddities in the nodules. </p>



<p><a href="https://metals.co/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Metals Co.</a> submitted a <a href="https://eartharxiv.org/repository/view/7717/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rebuttal</a> of the scientific research paper to <em>Nature Geoscience</em>, which awaits peer review.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, independent observers note the need for more experiments. A research oceanographer at the US Geological Survey’s <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/pacific-coastal-and-marine-science-center" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center</a> in Santa Cruz, California, said the USGS has not observed any electrical phenomena in ferromanganese nodules examined so far.</p>



<p>She was not involved in either Sweetman’s or Ruff’s research.</p>



<p>NASA hopes these findings might hint at life in places beyond Earth. Dark ocean worlds like Jupiter’s moon <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/why-europa/europa-up-close/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa</a> and Saturn’s moon <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/resources/gallery/8-real-world-science-facts-about-saturns-moon-enceladus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enceladus</a> are prime targets for research.</p>



<p>Sweetman shared that the space agency wants to test whether high pressures found on those icy moons can trigger oxygen generation in deep-sea rocks without direct sunlight. If the same basic chemistry works there, it could point to possible <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-in-the-deep-sea-may-hold-clues-about-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial life in alien seas</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-oxygen-and-deep-sea-mining">Dark oxygen and deep-sea mining</h2>



<p>The Clarion-Clipperton Zone sits far offshore, and mining there is governed by the <a href="https://www.isa.org.jm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Seabed Authority</a>. Critics argue that removing nodules in huge volumes could destroy habitats.</p>



<p>Organizations like <a href="https://www.fauna-flora.org/publications/fauna-flora-deep-sea-mining-report-update-march-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fauna &amp; Flora</a> warn of irreparable harm, saying it may disturb carbon storage in the ocean. Sweetman believes it is risky to harvest seabed minerals until scientists know a lot more about these systems.</p>



<p>He acknowledges the controversy and plans to address critics in peer-reviewed forums. For now, the hunt for hard data continues, fueled by the hope of expanding our understanding of life - both here and possibly on other worlds.</p>

<p>Wandering salamanders, also known as "skydiving salamanders," have fascinated scientists for years with their ability to jump and glide effortlessly through the towering canopies of coastal redwood forests. </p>



<p>Despite their small size, these amphibians navigate high-altitude branches with precision, sticking their landings and taking off with ease. </p>



<p>Until recently, the mechanics behind their remarkable acrobatic movement remained a mystery. Now, a new study reveals a surprising answer: blood-powered toes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salamanders-that-control-blood-flow">Salamanders that control blood flow</h2>



<p>Researchers at Washington State University discovered that wandering salamanders (<em>Aneides vagrans</em>) can rapidly control the blood flow in their toe tips.</p>



<p>This ability allows them to grip, detach, and move through their arboreal environment with remarkable efficiency. </p>



<p>The study not only sheds light on an unknown aspect of salamander physiology but also has potential implications for technological advances in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopus-suckers-the-future-of-underwater-adhesives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adhesives</a>, prosthetics, and robotic limbs.</p>



<p>The research team found that salamanders can fill, trap, and drain blood within their toe tips. </p>



<p>This process helps them fine-tune their attachment and detachment from surfaces, providing the grip necessary for climbing and the release required for efficient movement.</p>



<p>The discovery challenges previous assumptions about the function of the visible red “lakes” of blood in their translucent toes. These structures were long thought to aid in oxygenation, but no scientific evidence supported that claim.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advantages-of-the-control">Advantages of the control</h2>



<p>The study suggests that controlling blood flow in the toes allows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-salamander-like-beast-gaiasia-jennyae-top-predator-before-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">salamanders</a> to adjust pressure asymmetrically.</p>



<p> This fine-tuned control helps them navigate the irregular surfaces of tree bark. Surprisingly, the blood influx before “toe-off” does not aid in attachment but rather helps the salamanders detach. </p>



<p>By slightly inflating their toe tips, they reduce the surface area in contact with the bark, minimizing the energy required to let go. This efficiency is crucial when gliding between branches and ensuring safe landings.</p>



<p>“Gecko-inspired adhesives already allow surfaces to be reused without losing stickiness,” said Christian Brown, lead author of the study, and a postdoctoral researcher in integrative physiology and neuroscience at <a href="https://wsu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington State University</a>.</p>



<p>“Understanding salamander toes could lead to similar breakthroughs in attachment technologies.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-documentary-shoot">A documentary shoot</h2>



<p>The origins of this study trace back to an unexpected moment during the filming of the documentary <em>The Americas</em>, which will air on February 23, 2025 on NBC and Peacock.</p>



<p>Brown was assisting on set as a salamander expert when he noticed something unusual through the production team’s high-powered camera lenses.</p>



<p>Just before a wandering salamander took a step, blood appeared to rush into its toe tips. Brown and camera assistant William Goldenberg observed this phenomenon multiple times. </p>

<p>The repeated occurrence caught their attention. “We looked at each other like, ‘Did you see that?’” Brown related.</p>



<p>Although the documentary team moved on to other subjects, Brown’s curiosity lingered. After filming wrapped, he reached out to Goldenberg and proposed an experiment. </p>



<p>Using high-resolution film equipment, they would investigate whether salamanders consistently displayed this blood-powered toe mechanism under controlled conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salamanders-regulating-their-blood-flow">Salamanders regulating their blood flow </h2>



<p>The research team conducted detailed video trials and microscopic analysis at Washington State University’s <a href="https://fmic.wsu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Franceschi Microscopy &amp; Imaging Center</a>. </p>



<p>Their findings confirmed that wandering salamanders regulate blood flow to each individual toe tip, which allows them to modify grip strength as needed.</p>



<p>This discovery provides insight into how salamanders navigate the complex terrain of the redwood canopy. The ability to release their grip efficiently is particularly significant. </p>



<p>“If you’re climbing a redwood and have 18 toes gripping bark, being able to detach efficiently without damaging your toe tips makes a huge difference,” Brown said. </p>



<p>The research suggests that this mechanism plays a crucial role in the salamanders’ ability to thrive in the towering heights of their natural habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-beyond-one-species">Implications beyond one species</h2>



<p>While this study focused on&nbsp;<em>Aneides vagrans</em>, the findings could have broader implications. Other salamander species, including aquatic ones, also have vascularized toe structures. </p>



<p>These structures may serve different purposes depending on the environment, from regulating grip on wet surfaces to enhancing movement across diverse landscapes.</p>



<p>The discovery could also inspire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-pushing-the-u-s-toward-an-unpredictable-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">innovations</a> beyond biology. Scientists studying bioinspired design are particularly interested in nature’s solutions to movement and adhesion problems.</p>



<p>By understanding how salamanders control their grip with blood-powered toe tips, researchers may be able to develop new adhesives and prosthetics that mimic this ability.</p>



<p>Brown and his colleagues plan to expand their research to investigate how similar mechanisms function in other salamander species. </p>



<p>“This could redefine our understanding of how salamanders move across diverse habitats,” Brown said. The findings could help explain how different species adapt to their environments and refine our knowledge of biomechanics in amphibians.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-salamander-movement">New perspective on salamander movement</h2>



<p>The discovery of blood-powered toes in wandering salamanders challenges previous assumptions about their movement and grip strength. </p>



<p>As scientists continue to study these remarkable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-and-toads-face-new-risks-as-their-habitats-dry-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amphibians</a>, they may uncover even more secrets hidden within their physiology. </p>



<p>For now, the ability of wandering salamanders to control their grip with precision remains an intriguing discovery in animal biomechanics.</p>

<p>Cosmic rays contain some of the most energetic particles in the universe, moving at nearly the speed of light. These subatomic particles, such as electrons and protons, travel through space, carrying essential clues about astrophysical phenomena.</p>



<p>While some originate from within our solar system, the most powerful ones come from distant cosmic sources.</p>



<p>The origin and acceleration of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-cosmic-explosion-changes-what-we-know-about-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-energy particles</a> remain one of astrophysics' greatest puzzles. Scientists have long theorized that extreme environments, such as the jets of black holes, could provide the necessary conditions for this extreme particle acceleration.</p>



<p>However, the details of how and under what circumstances these processes occur are still not well understood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microquasars-and-cosmic-rays">Microquasars and cosmic rays</h2>



<p>Microquasars, a type of binary system composed of a stellar-mass black hole and a companion star, have been identified as promising sites for high-energy particle acceleration. In these systems, the black hole pulls in material from its companion, forming a swirling accretion disk. </p>



<p>This process generates <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-high-energy-cosmic-rays-did-something-outside-our-galaxy-send-them-here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">powerful jets</a> that shoot matter away at exceptionally high speeds.</p>



<p>Such jets are thought to play a significant role in accelerating cosmic rays but, until now, observational evidence has been scarce and limited to specific systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microquasars-in-high-energy-physics">Microquasars in high-energy physics</h2>



<p>Microquasars exist in two main forms that are differentiated by the mass of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hess-observatory-detects-highest-energy-cosmic-rays-ever-observed-origin-unknown/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">companion stars</a>. High-mass microquasars contain stars that are significantly larger than the Sun, while low-mass microquasars have much smaller companion stars.</p>



<p>High-energy particle acceleration had previously been observed only in the high-mass category, leading many researchers to believe that low-mass microquasars lacked the necessary conditions to produce cosmic rays.</p>



<p>One of the most well-known examples of a high-mass microquasar is SS 433, which was recently revealed to be one of the most powerful particle accelerators in the galaxy. </p>



<p>This system contains a companion star with a mass approximately ten times that of the Sun. Its powerful jets emit high-energy gamma rays, reinforcing the idea that such systems could significantly contribute to the total cosmic ray production in the Milky Way.</p>



<p>The question remained whether all microquasars could accelerate cosmic particles, or if only the most massive ones had this capability. </p>



<p>Since low-mass microquasars are much more abundant than their high-mass counterparts, answering this question was essential for understanding their role in cosmic ray <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-rays-help-archaeologists-determine-age-discoveries-prehistoric-settlements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">production</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-mass-microquasar-emitting-gamma-rays">Low-mass microquasar emitting gamma rays</h2>



<p>A recent discovery by Dr. Laura Olivera-Nieto from the <a href="https://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/mpi/de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max-Planck-Institut</a> für Kernphysik and Dr. Guillem Martí-Devesa from <a href="https://portale.units.it/it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Università di Trieste</a> has challenged previous assumptions about particle acceleration.</p>



<p>Using 16 years of observational data from NASA’s <a href="https://fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fermi Large Area Telescope</a>, the experts detected a faint gamma-ray signal linked to GRS 1915+105, a microquasar with a low-mass companion star.</p>



<p>The presence of gamma rays at energies exceeding 10 GeV suggests that this system is accelerating particles to even higher levels. This marks the first concrete evidence of particle acceleration occurring in a low-mass microquasar. </p>



<p>The discovery fundamentally shifts the understanding of which systems contribute to cosmic ray production in the galaxy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mechanism-behind-the-acceleration">Mechanism behind the acceleration</h2>



<p>The study proposes that the detected gamma rays result from proton acceleration within the microquasar’s jets. </p>



<p>These high-energy protons escape the system and collide with nearby gas, producing gamma-ray photons. This mechanism aligns with previous theoretical predictions about how cosmic rays might originate from black hole environments.</p>



<p>Further supporting this hypothesis, additional data from Japan’s Nobeyama 45-meter Radio Telescope indicate that there is enough surrounding gas to sustain this process. </p>



<p>The presence of this gas is crucial, as it provides the necessary medium for the accelerated protons to interact with and generate the observed gamma-ray emission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-cosmic-ray-research">Implications for cosmic ray research</h2>



<p>This discovery reshapes the understanding of how cosmic rays are produced and distributed throughout the galaxy. </p>



<p>Given that low-mass microquasars are significantly more common than their high-mass counterparts, their total contribution to the cosmic ray population could be far greater than previously assumed. This challenges earlier models that relied primarily on the influence of high-mass microquasars and supernova remnants.</p>



<p>Despite this breakthrough, many questions remain. Are all low-mass microquasars capable of accelerating cosmic rays, or is GRS 1915+105 an exceptional case? What specific conditions enable efficient particle acceleration in these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/voyager-spacecraft-fighting-survival-cosmic-threats-outside-our-solar-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">systems</a>? </p>



<p>Further observations and multi-wavelength studies will be required to refine these findings and better understand the underlying mechanisms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-high-energy-astrophysics">Future of high-energy astrophysics</h2>



<p>The discovery that low-mass microquasars can act as cosmic ray accelerators opens new research avenues. If similar gamma-ray signals are detected in other low-mass systems, it could lead to a major revision of current cosmic ray models. </p>



<p>Future missions involving more sensitive space- and ground-based telescopes will play a critical role in identifying additional sources and confirming the extent of their contributions.</p>



<p>This research also highlights the importance of long-term observational studies. By analyzing extensive datasets spanning multiple years, researchers can uncover faint signals that might otherwise go undetected.</p>



<p>The use of multi-wavelength approaches - combining gamma-ray, radio, and X-ray observations - will continue to refine the understanding of how these extreme environments function.</p>



<p>Microquasars, once thought to be relatively minor players in cosmic ray production, are now emerging as significant contributors. </p>

<p>Every object in the universe is on a countdown. Planets take shape, orbit their stars and, in some cases, break apart completely. One small planet, locked in a dangerously close orbit, is falling apart faster than anyone expected.</p>



<p>In the wake of this discovery, <a href="https://www.icds.psu.edu/featured-researcher-nick-tusay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nick Tusay</a> from Penn State has highlighted how modern instruments can capture the fragments of a world in near-real time. </p>



<p>His team uncovered new details about one particular planet, known as K2-22b, by pointing the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a> (JWST) at this extreme environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-k2-22b-meltdown">Understanding the K2-22b meltdown</h2>



<p>Astronomers classify certain extreme planets as <a href="https://sites.astro.caltech.edu/~fdai/usp.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultra-short period</a> objects if they lie very close to their stars and orbit them in mere hours. </p>



<p>K2-22b fits this definition perfectly, circling its sun in just over nine hours while enduring a blistering surface temperature of about 2100 degrees Kelvin.</p>



<p>Researchers believe K2-22b loses material because it sits so close to its star that even metal and rock turn into vapor. </p>



<p>They noticed that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/">star's light</a> dims in an uneven way, which supports the idea that a lengthy dust tail trails behind the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-lies-beneath-k2-22b">What lies beneath K2-22b?</h2>



<p>The K2-22b system provides a chance to examine the interior of a planet that lies outside our solar system. </p>



<p>Astronomers have rarely had direct access to the core and mantle layers of any world in such a clear fashion, but they see bits of this planet being tossed off into space. </p>



<p>“These planets are literally spilling their guts into space for us, and with JWST we finally have the means to study their composition and see what planets orbiting other stars are really made of,” explained Tusay.</p>



<p><a href="https://science.psu.edu/astro/people/jtw13" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jason Wright</a>, a co-author on the same project, described how it is tricky to get samples from Earth’s own mantle. He sees K2-22b as a rare chance to capture a direct glimpse of a <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/k2-22-b/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">small world’s deeper layers</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-second-disappearing-act">Second disappearing act</h2>



<p>While K2-22b first drew notice by shedding rock into space, another object has shocked astronomers with a brisk pace of demise. </p>



<p>A separate team, guided by researchers from MIT, discovered <a href="https://exoplanet.eu/catalog/bd_05_4868_ab--10886/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BD+05 4868 Ab</a>, a planet that completes its orbit in just over 30 hours and looks to be spewing material in two directions.</p>



<p>According to the MIT group, BD+05 4868 Ab’s dust tail stretches around 9 million kilometers, which is more than half the distance along its orbit. It even boasts a second tail, composed of smaller particles that drift at a different rate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brighter-star-bigger-surprises">Brighter star, bigger surprises</h2>



<p>Observers report that BD+05 4868 Ab blocks more than one percent of its star’s light whenever the dust tail crosses our line of sight. </p>



<p>The transit period can last up to fifteen hours, reflecting the massive area that the dust cloud covers.</p>



<p>“The rate at which the planet is evaporating is utterly cataclysmic, and we are incredibly lucky to be witnessing the final hours of this dying planet,” said <a href="https://www.space.mit.edu/people/marc-hon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marc Hon</a>, postdoctoral researcher at the MIT TESS Science Office. </p>



<p>This object might only endure another couple of million years, which is swift from a cosmic perspective.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-k2-22b-matter">Why does K2-22b matter?</h2>



<p>With BD+05 4868 Ab orbiting a relatively <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bright-star-documented-year-1181-was-actually-supernova-sn-1181/">bright star</a>, astronomers can more easily analyze the spectral signatures of the planet’s dusty outflow. That brightness boosts the chances of spotting specific chemical markers.</p>



<p>A growing number of specialists hope to build a clearer picture of what elements make up these evaporating worlds. </p>



<p>These bits of data might guide theories on how planets form and evolve, offering insights that extend well beyond one star system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-both-teams-joining-forces">Both teams joining forces</h2>



<p>Scientists behind both discoveries are joining efforts to gather more data on BD+05 4868 Ab. They plan to use JWST’s infrared capabilities to investigate whether the losing world releases certain combinations of silicate or iron vapors.</p>



<p>Astronomers also anticipate comparing the composition of K2-22b’s escaping rock to that of BD+05 4868 Ab’s dust tails. </p>



<p>Unusual compounds could crop up in either system, spurring new questions about how materials behave at scorching temperatures and intense radiation levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stars-destroy-their-planets">Stars destroy their planets</h2>



<p>These fiery, short-lived planets confirm that stars can rip apart their neighbors under the right conditions. Observations of dust tails do more than raise eyebrows; they unlock ways to decode the inner layers of distant worlds.</p>



<p>Some researchers point out how each <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-identified-85-new-exoplanets-that-could-harbor-life/">new planet found</a> in this condition brings them closer to refining atmospheric models. </p>



<p>Even the presence of compounds like nitric oxide or carbon dioxide can challenge long-held assumptions about which chemicals endure such brutal heat.</p>



<p>Disintegrating planets were once seen as an oddity, but technology has leapt forward. Instruments like TESS continually scan large chunks of sky, and JWST can focus on selected targets at extraordinary resolution.</p>



<p>Future campaigns may reveal more battered planets that have similar tails. Once a few more systems are identified, researchers might learn if certain stars are more prone to hosting these doomed objects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-k2-22b-and-disintegrating-planets">K2-22b and disintegrating planets</h2>



<p>As telescopes capture fresh snapshots of disintegration in progress, theorists will keep refining their understanding of tidal forces, star-planet interactions, and how heat ravages a planet’s structure. </p>

<p>Each new observation feeds into a bigger mosaic that helps answer why certain planets crumble so quickly. That ongoing research could reshape our perspective on planetary survival in the harshest of stellar neighborhoods.</p>

<p>A team of researchers, including scientists from the <a href="https://ista.ac.at/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Science and Technology Austria</a> (ISTA), has tackled these fundamental questions. The findings suggest that evolution may have had multiple optimal solutions at its disposal.</p>



<p>Their mathematical model forecasts the ideal body plan of a fruit fly embryo, offering new insights into how evolution optimizes biological processes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results indicate that rather than following a single trajectory, evolution might allow for multiple optimal solutions, depending on the constraints and conditions under which an organism <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-evolution-not-random-gene-families-pangenome-influence-called-revolutionary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolves</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-optimization-in-evolution-a-universal-principle">Optimization in evolution: A universal principle?</h2>



<p>The principle of optimization is often seen as nature’s guiding force, driving systems toward minimal energy consumption, maximum efficiency, or highest fitness.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Whether in whale pods, cellular collectives, or ecosystems, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-rules-natural-selection-change-significantly-often-daphnia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural selection</a> appears to favor structures that operate close to peak efficiency.</p>



<p>One area where this principle might be particularly relevant is the development of animal embryos. From a small cluster of cells to a fully developed organism, embryonic growth has likely been fine-tuned over millions of years. However, until now, no precise mathematical model had successfully predicted the optimal embryonic structure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-allows-for-multiple-solutions-nbsp">Evolution allows for multiple solutions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Researchers from ISTA, the <a href="https://fias.institute/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies</a>, and <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University </a>have now developed such a model.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, nearly two decades in the making, presents a theoretical framework for understanding the gene-regulation network that controls early developmental processes in fruit flies.</p>



<p>"Adaptation can be seen as an optimization process, or at least as a process that requires optimization of certain traits and functions," explained Thomas Sokolowski, a scientist at ISTA and the study’s first author.</p>



<p>Unlike physical systems, where optimization typically leads to a single, lowest-energy state, biological systems seem to allow for multiple optimal solutions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The evolution of eyes is a classic example: although they evolved independently in multiple species, their overall structure remains remarkably similar due to the fundamental requirement of maximizing light absorption and neural encoding.</p>



<p>“Eyes were optimized for the same well-defined objective function, which is maximal uptake of light and its encoding into neural spikes. They are therefore strongly dictated by the laws of physics,” Sokolowski explained. “Nuanced differences between animals may be explained by differences in the side circumstances under which they evolved.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-paths-to-success">Many paths to success</h2>



<p>The same principle appears to apply to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/embryo-formation-is-shaped-by-electric-fields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">embryonic development</a>. Different evolutionary strategies have emerged, yet they all lead to the same highly precise and reproducible body plan. The challenge lies in identifying which selective pressures drove the optimization process.</p>



<p>“It is increasingly clear how an embryo develops, but it is not clear which mathematical function guides the system to come together,” Sokolowski noted. “It’s like finding a mathematical needle in a biological haystack.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-fruit-fly-as-a-model-organism">The fruit fly as a model organism</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-flies-have-a-new-weapon-to-defend-against-parasitic-wasps/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fruit fly</a> (<em>Drosophila melanogaster</em>) has long been a cornerstone of biological research. The 1995 Nobel Prize-winning work of Eric Wieschaus, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, and Edward B. Lewis identified the genes crucial for fly development, particularly gap genes and morphogen gradients that regulate embryogenesis.</p>



<p>The gap gene network functions like a genetic positioning system (GPS), determining cell fate along the embryo’s head-to-tail axis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The precise activation levels of these genes form a highly accurate positional code, giving each cell exact information about its location within the embryo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decades-of-research">Decades of research</h2>



<p>The new study builds on 20 years of work by scientists such as William Bialek, Gašper Tkačik, Curtis Callan, Aleksandra Walczak, and Thomas Gregor.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team's earlier research suggested that the gap gene network is optimized to provide high positional accuracy using minimal signaling molecules - similar to how a GPS system functions efficiently with fewer satellites.</p>



<p>The goal was to define a mathematical function that explains this phenomenon. Initially, researchers explored simplified theoretical models that incorporated only parts of the gap gene regulatory mechanisms. These early models were limited but paved the way for a more comprehensive approach.</p>



<p>“Our early work showed that it was possible to obtain nontrivial and originally unexpected predictions for gene regulatory interactions by optimizing them for maximal information throughput under realistic biophysical and molecular resource constraints,” Tkačik explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modeling-gene-expression-patterns">Modeling gene expression patterns</h2>



<p>Building on this foundation, Sokolowski and colleagues developed detailed stochastic models, incorporating the randomness that occurs in real biological systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When Sokolowski joined Tkačik’s group at ISTA in 2014, they combined optimization techniques with spatial-stochastic modeling, creating a realistic yet computationally efficient simulation of gap gene interactions.</p>



<p>Initially, their model featured just two genes but was later expanded to include the full set of four gap genes and three morphogen gradients. The resulting optimized networks closely matched the actual gene expression patterns observed in real fruit fly embryos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multiple-paths-to-evolutionary-optimization">Multiple paths to evolutionary optimization</h2>



<p>One of the study’s most significant findings is that there is more than one way to achieve optimal positional encoding in the gap gene network. While only a small subset of all possible genetic configurations are truly optimal, even within this subset, significant variability exists.</p>



<p>“We believe this is not a detriment, but an advantage for evolution, as the same fitness can be potentially reached by many imaginable evolutionary paths,” Sokolowski explained.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that while fruit flies followed one particular evolutionary trajectory, many alternative pathways could have led to equally viable organisms. This flexibility increases the likelihood that evolution can select for functional adaptations, even in changing environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modeling-evolution-beyond-optimal-solutions">Modeling evolution beyond optimal solutions</h2>



<p>Despite the success of their optimization-based approach, the researchers acknowledge that a full understanding of embryonic evolution will require additional modeling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Future studies must account for environmental influences, natural selection mechanisms, and genetic constraints to build a more accurate picture of how evolution shapes functional body plans.</p>



<p>The team’s work represents a major step forward in theoretical biology, providing a mathematical framework that helps explain how embryos develop and why evolution selects for specific genetic configurations. </p>



<p>The findings could also offer insights into other biological systems where optimization plays a role.</p>



<p>By demonstrating that multiple optimal solutions exist in evolution, the research challenges traditional views of a single evolutionary path, highlighting the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microfossils-reveal-a-leap-in-lifes-complexity-2-4-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complexity</a> and adaptability of life’s developmental processes.</p>

<p>Color perception and our sense of smell might sound like simple and straightforward processes, but scientific research points to something more happening behind the scenes in our brains. Our senses appear to blend in ways that shift how we see things, and scent is a key part of this mixture. </p>



<p>Researchers in the UK explored this link by presenting participants with various odors, then testing their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/synesthesia-how-some-people-taste-words-and-see-music-in-color/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">color perception</a> by asking them to set a color patch to what they believed was neutral gray. </p>

<p>Studies have shown that a high-pitched sound can seem to brighten <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-we-see-the-world-based-on-what-we-expect-to-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our perception</a> of flavor or that a cool temperature might alter how sweet something tastes. </p>



<p>Although scent and sight have received less attention, this study brings the focus to odors and how they influence color judgment.</p>



<p>Participants noticed subtle differences based on the aroma they encountered. One illustration involved the smell of cherry, which led people to set the neutral gray color patch in a way that leaned red-brown. </p>



<p>The researchers also pointed out that when caramel, coffee, lemon, or peppermint were introduced, there was a tendency to connect each fragrance with distinct color tints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-color-influencing-odor-and-smell">Color influencing odor and smell</h2>



<p>Past studies found that color can shift how we judge <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-dreams-influence-our-perceptions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smells or tastes</a>. An orange-looking drink might be described as orange-flavored, even if it is actually cherry. </p>



<p>There was also a case where white wine was dyed red, and skilled wine tasters then applied terms typical of red wine to describe it. </p>



<p>According to these findings, the relationship between color and smell is not one-way. Just as color can guide how a smell is perceived, odor and our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-detects-odors-in-less-time-than-it-takes-to-blink/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sense of smell</a> can affect how we see color.</p>



<p>People are sometimes surprised by how easy it is to misidentify certain fragrances, even those we think we know well. Researchers in this study saw that confusion often happened with coffee and peppermint. </p>



<p>Yet even if folks got the label wrong, there was a strong sense of familiarity that might have been enough to change color perception.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-this-happen">How does this happen?</h2>



<p>Semantics, or the mental links we form over time, could play a central part in this effect. </p>



<p>The smell of cherry, for example, might bring to mind bright red fruit. The scent of coffee might suggest darker shades. </p>



<p>Researchers propose that such connections can shape how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-story-behind-our-sense-of-smell-is-coming-into-focus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brains map smells</a> to colors, even if we are not fully aware of the process.</p>

<p>This new insight into smell-sight pairing opens up questions about how retailers and product designers might shape consumer experiences. </p>



<p>Previous research has shown how color and flavor pairings guide buying habits. Now, scent-based cues may also be involved in shaping the colors people see in packaging or advertisements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coffee-smell-has-a-red-brown-color">Coffee smell has a red-brown color</h2>



<p>Investigators explained that the color shifts were not huge, but the consistency across subjects points to a genuine effect. </p>



<p>One result was that odors often tugged the neutral gray setting toward warmer shades. The smell of coffee had a red-brown tilt, while peppermint prompted a mix that included browner tones. </p>



<p>The authors also highlighted that people do not always realize their senses are interacting in these ways.</p>



<p>Although the study did not offer a final answer on why this happens, the suggestion is that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/losing-your-sense-of-smell-is-linked-to-over-100-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smell can trigger</a> vivid mental images. </p>



<p>These associations, in turn, guide small but meaningful changes in how colors appear. It is an intriguing blend of unconscious inference and sensory overlap.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-merging-senses-blended-information">Merging senses, blended information</h2>



<p>The authors note that these findings fit into a larger pattern of research on how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-processing-speed-is-millions-of-times-slower-than-wi-fi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">senses merge</a>. In many situations, our minds rely on blended information. </p>



<p>When we talk to someone, for instance, we rely on speech sounds and facial expressions. </p>



<p>Companies have long leveraged these sensory crossovers to make certain products or experiences more appealing. </p>



<p>What this study adds is a deeper look at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/odors-prompt-brain-cells-to-make-decisions-before-you-know-whats-happening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how odors can shape</a> color perception on a level that goes beyond guesswork.</p>



<p>Whether this makes a peppermint-scented space seem a bit browner or a cherry aroma tilt the world a little redder, the effect appears to be real. </p>



<p>Some might not notice it directly, but the impact on design, marketing, and even everyday awareness could be more important than people realize.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-by-mixing-colors-and-smells">Learning by mixing colors and smells</h2>



<p>This study provides a fresh angle on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emotions-sensory-perception-brain-fascinating-interplay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sensory science</a> by showing that smell can steer how we interpret a neutral color. </p>



<p>Previous examples, including how people perceive wine or connect flavor to color, paved the way for these conclusions. </p>



<p>Our senses are intertwined, and this research suggests they work together in ways that might surprise us.</p>



<p>Though many odors were part of the experiment, it was tricky for participants to name them with perfect accuracy. Even so, the sense of recognition was enough to shift the color patch. </p>



<p>These subtle shifts in the gray setting might point to powerful undercurrents in how the brain combines information from smell and sight. That combination, though quiet, has a noticeable effect on our view of the world.</p>

<p>Imagine going out for a quiet stroll and unexpectedly uncovering the remnants of a prehistoric meal - one that dates back 66 million years - buried beneath layers of ancient rock.</p>



<p>This is exactly what happened to an amateur fossil enthusiast in Denmark who, with a keen eye and a bit of luck, stumbled upon a discovery that promises to shed new light on the diets of prehistoric creatures that once roamed the ancient seas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chance-discovery-on-the-cliffs">Chance discovery on the cliffs</h2>



<p>The location called the Stevns Klint Coastal Cliffs, which is a <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNESCO-heritage</a> site south of Copenhagen, proved to be a treasure trove for this local resident.</p>



<p>His name is Peter Bennicke, and he was out on a casual walk when he happened upon some unusual fragments in a piece of chalk.</p>



<p>On closer inspection, these fragments turned out to be pieces of sea lily, which is actually a type of marine invertebrate.</p>



<p>Intrigued by his discovery, Bennicke decided to take these fragments to a museum for further examination. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossilized-vomit-composition">Fossilized vomit composition</h2>



<p>The specialists at the <a href="https://www.oesm.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum of East Zealand</a> conducted an examination of the fragments, which revealed that the pieces were not just ordinary sea lilies.</p>



<p>They were actually a part of fossilized vomit that had formed near the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous period</a>, around 66 million years ago.</p>



<p>This vomit is thought to have come from a fish that dined on at least two different species of sea lily. However, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-show-distinct-personalities-when-foraging-for-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> could not digest these parts and subsequently regurgitated them.</p>

<p>In a press release, the Museum emphasized the importance of such discoveries, stating that they play a key role in piecing together ancient food webs.</p>



<p>"This type of find ... is considered very important when reconstructing past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-past-warming-help-protect-future-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> because it provides important information about which animals were eaten by which," stated the Museum press release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prehistoric-food-chain-insights">Prehistoric food chain insights</h2>



<p>Discovering prehistoric fossilized vomit is indeed rare and offers new insights into the diet and behavior of prehistoric animals. In the world of paleontology, this is regarded as a precious find.</p>



<p>Jesper Milan, a noted paleontologist associated with the research, was very enthusiastic about the discovery. </p>



<p>He hailed this discovery as "truly an unusual find," and elaborated on how it helps decipher the relationships in the prehistoric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oceans-twilight-zone-stabilizes-the-marine-food-chain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food chain</a>.</p>



<p>"Sea lilies are not a particularly nutritious diet, as they consist mainly of calcareous plates held together by a few soft parts," explained Milan. </p>



<p>"But here is an animal, probably some kind of fish that, 66 million years ago, ate sea lilies that lived at the bottom of the Cretaceous sea and regurgitated the skeletal parts."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-clues-in-fossilized-vomit">Unexpected clues in fossilized vomit</h2>



<p>Fossilized remains like this rare regurgitation provide a unique snapshot of life in the prehistoric seas.</p>



<p>Unlike traditional body fossils, which reveal an animal’s physical structure, trace fossils such as vomit, feces, and bite marks offer direct evidence of ancient behaviors. </p>



<p>These remnants, which are often overlooked, play a crucial role in understanding prehistoric ecosystems.</p>



<p>The Cliffs of Stevns, already famous for their rich fossil record from the end-Cretaceous period, continue to yield new surprises. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-fossilized-vomit-matter">Why does fossilized vomit matter?</h2>



<p>This latest discovery highlights how the prehistoric marine world was more dynamic than previously thought. </p>



<p>The presence of sea lilies in the fish’s diet suggests that some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-shoulders-evolved-from-the-jawbones-of-ancient-fish-called-placoderms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient fish</a> species were more opportunistic feeders than expected, consuming whatever was available in their environment. </p>



<p>This challenges assumptions that sea lilies, primarily composed of calcium carbonate, were unappealing to most marine predators.</p>



<p>By analyzing the composition and arrangement of fossilized vomit like this, paleontologists can piece together ancient food webs with greater accuracy. </p>



<p>It also raises intriguing questions. Was this fish struggling to find more nutritious prey? Had it evolved specialized features to help it digest this unappealing food? </p>



<p>With each new find, researchers inch closer to understanding the daily lives of prehistoric creatures, and recreating a more vivid picture of the past.</p>

66-million-year-old fossilized vomit gives clues to prehistoric diets

Imagine going out for a quiet stroll and unexpectedly uncovering...

<p>When did humanity's early hominin ancestors first leave Africa and migrate into Europe and Asia? Good question. It seems like each time scientists think they have a definitive date, a new discovery is made that pushes the timeline back even further.</p>



<p>Until very recently, experts believed that these early ancestors first reached Eurasia about 1.8 million years ago. </p>



<p>However, new findings by an international research team suggest a different timeline that nudges the date back to nearly 2 million years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unearthing-clues-from-graunceanu">Unearthing clues from Grăunceanu</h2>



<p>To investigate this question, researchers headed to Grăunceanu in Romania. Nestled in the picturesque Olteț River Valley, this area hosts numerous fossil sites first uncovered in the 1960s.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-hotspots-may-skew-our-view-of-human-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sites</a> offer tantalizing glimpses into the ancient past, but researchers faced a significant challenge: the conspicuous absence of hominin bones. </p>



<p>Without any fossilized bones to analyze, the researchers sought alternative sources of evidence that might indicate the presence of ancient hominins.</p>



<p>At Grăunceanu, researchers embarked on an examination of over 5,000 bones, which were scrutinized for the signs of possible cut marks. These would have indicated the use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/400000-year-old-stone-tools-show-technological-adaptations-of-prehistoric-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stone tools</a> to remove animal flesh from the bones.</p>



<p>From this sea of fossils, the team zeroed in on 20 bones that confidently displayed the tell-tale marks of tool use.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dating-ancient-bones-with-tool-marks">Dating ancient bones with tool marks</h2>



<p>“We didn’t initially expect to find much,” shared research lead, Sabrina Curran, associate professor of anthropology at <a href="https://www.ohio.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ohio University</a>.</p>



<p>However, a routine check of the collections led to the discovery of several cut-marked bones, sparking a deeper investigation that uncovered “distinct marks across different bones, suggesting deliberate butchering activities.”</p>

<p>By employing biostratigraphic data and precise uranium-lead dating techniques, it was determined that the minimum age of these bones was around 1.95 million years. </p>



<p>This is significantly earlier than anticipated and represents a shift in our understanding of early hominin history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interpreting-a-prehistoric-palette">Interpreting a prehistoric palette</h2>



<p>Factoring into the narrative is Dmanisi, an archaeological site in Georgia which, until this discovery, was regarded as home to the oldest evidence of hominin activity outside Africa - dated to approximately 1.8 million years ago.</p>



<p>Verification of the age of the cut-marked bones in Grăunceanu, Romania, however, pushes the timeline of the presence of hominins in Eurasia back by almost 200,000 years.</p>



<p>Not only does this suggest early hominin presence in Eurasia, but it also elucidates aspects of their tool use from that era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environment-of-early-hominin-habitation">Environment of early hominin habitation</h2>



<p>Further inquiry into the environment that our early ancestors inhabited was undertaken through isotopic analyses by Virgil Drăguşin from the “Emil Racoviţă” <a href="https://www.iser.ro/presentation.php?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Speleology</a>.</p>



<p>It seems this region would have witnessed seasonal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earths-temperature-has-changed-over-500-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature variations</a> akin to those of the present day, but levels of rainfall would have been higher.</p>



<p>Additionally, the hominins entering these new territories would have encountered a variety of unique fauna, including wooly rhinos, saber tooth cats, pangolins, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-made-woolly-mammoths-unique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoths</a>. </p>



<p>They would have needed to be highly adaptable in these relatively unfamiliar environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-debate-on-early-hominin-migration">Debate on early hominin migration</h2>



<p>“People get really fired up about human ancestors, and one ongoing debate has been related to the earliest evidence of tool use,” noted Associate Professor Claire Terhune from the <a href="https://www.uark.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arkansas</a>.</p>



<p>“Because of this, we have been extremely meticulous in documenting the presence of these cut marks because we knew if we handed another paleontologist these bones, they’d say, ‘Oh, yeah these are cut marks.’ But if we told them they’re from Romania two million years ago, they’re going to say, ‘No, that can’t be right,’” she explained.</p>



<p>Indeed, the discovery at Grăunceanu is pivotal in understanding our human prehistory.</p>



<p>It challenges long-held assumptions about the timing and pace of early hominin dispersal, suggesting a more dynamic migration process than previously believed. </p>



<p>These findings also raise new questions about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-used-interesting-technique-hunt-big-animals-clovis-points/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early humans</a> adapted to novel ecosystems, particularly in colder, temperate regions of Eurasia.</p>



<p>"It demonstrates that early hominins had already begun to explore and inhabit diverse environments across Eurasia, showing an adaptability that would later play a crucial role in their survival and spread," Dr. Curran said. </p>



<p>"We are just beginning to uncover the many chapters of that story," she added.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56154-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a></em>.</p>

<p>Antarctica, frequently seen as the globe's final untouched frontier, harbors a diversity of life in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. </p>



<p>The Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems, which span less than half a percent of the continent's permanently ice-free land, are home to a fascinating range of biodiversity, from resilient microbes and mosses to seabird colonies that thrive in these isolated habitats.</p>



<p>These rare ecological pockets serve as crucial strongholds for species uniquely adapted to conditions of extreme cold and limited resources.</p>



<p>Unfortunately, they are increasingly vulnerable to human intrusion and climatic fluctuations. </p>



<p>Rising global temperatures threaten to alter these fragile environments by expanding ice-free areas and potentially accommodating invasive species that could disrupt long-established ecological balances.</p>



<p>Additionally, growing human activity - through research stations, tourism, and resource exploration - raises concerns about pollution, habitat degradation, and the introduction of non-native organisms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-fresh-look-at-an-old-landscape">A fresh look at an old landscape</h2>



<p>A group of researchers from the Centre for Ecosystem Science, <a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNSW Sydney</a>, has recently made a significant advance in understanding these icy ecosystems.</p>



<p>They have orchestrated a thorough and detailed map and classification system of Antarctica's ice-free lands. </p>



<p>This novel index classifies the continent's ecosystems into nine major environment units, 33 habitat complexes, and 269 bioregional ecosystem types.</p>



<p>This detailed categorization offers a much-needed resource to aid in the protection of Antarctica's diverse, ice-free lands.</p>



<p>“Many people are surprised to learn that Antarctica has any permanently <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice-free</a> lands at all. And yet, these tiny habitat patches contain the vast majority of the continent’s biodiversity,” explained researcher Dr. Anikó B. Tóth. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unseen-world-of-ice-free-antarctica">Unseen world of ice-free Antarctica</h2>



<p>These frost-less landscapes host an array of highly adapted plants that form "micro-forests" and include lichens, moss, and two flowering plants, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-is-experiencing-rapid-plant-growth-concerning-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic hair grass and pearlwort</a>.</p>



<p>Numerous mites and springtails (tiny arthropods related to spiders and insects), tardigrades, nematodes, and algal species find homes in these lands.</p>



<p>Various seabirds, including land-breeding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emperor-penguins-will-not-survive-the-current-rate-of-sea-ice-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">penguins</a>, petrels, gulls, skuas, and albatrosses, have even established breeding communities here.</p>



<p>Yet, with changes in climate and melting ice, these pockets of biodiversity will likely become warmer and less isolated in future, making them accessible to colonizing species from the lower latitudes.</p>



<p>“Instead of fragmentation and loss of area, ice-free patches will become larger and more interconnected,” which could drastically alter the ecosystems, typically characterized by isolation.," Dr. Tóth added. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conserving-ice-free-antarctica">Conserving ice-free Antarctica</h2>



<p>Senior researcher, Professor David Keith, underlines that this map and classification system denote a significant stride towards comprehending <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/akarotaxis-gouldae-new-banded-dragonfish-species-discovered-reveals-antarctic-ecosystem/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic ecosystems</a>. </p>



<p>Considering both biophysical and biological data has led to a robust structure for directing conservation efforts as part of the Antarctic Treaty System.</p>

<p>One vital component is the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/veterinary-science-and-veterinary-medicine/gap-gene#:~:text=Gap%20genes%20subdivide%20the%20embryo,expression%20of%20segment%20polarity%20genes." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gap gene system</a>, a network that helps cells recognize their exact spot in the embryo. </p>



<p>Messages from <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology/morphogen" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">morphogen</a> gradients steer each section into the right shape, making these genes essential for normal growth.</p>



<p>Many scientists once wondered if this entire process could be boiled down to a single winning formula. They suspected that years of adaptation had honed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-flies-can-walk-jump-and-dance-using-the-same-motor-neurons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fruit fly</a>’s design to a razor-sharp optimum.</p>

<p>By juggling more than 50 parameters, the team hoped to predict what arrangement of gene interactions would generate the best spatial map.</p>



<p>Early prototypes simplified the system to glean the core ideas. Embryo development shows how evolution had many options to choose from

<p>In the frozen expanse of the Arctic, polar bears glide effortlessly across ice and plunge into sub-zero waters - yet their fur is remarkably free of frost. </p>



<p>For years, scientists have wondered: How do these apex predators avoid turning into walking ice cubes? The answer, it turns out, is as simple as it is surprising: greasy hair.</p>



<p>Researchers analyzed hair samples from six wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bears-are-struggling-to-survive-longer-summers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bears</a>. They discovered that the fur’s sebum, made of cholesterol, diacylglycerols, and fatty acids, plays a crucial role in preventing ice buildup. </p>



<p>When the grease was removed, the fur lost its ice-resistant properties and behaved similarly to human hair, which allows ice to adhere easily.</p>



<p>The research offers new insights into how polar bears adapt to their harsh environment. It also opens up possibilities for developing new materials that resist ice accumulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-polar-bears-greasy-fur">Polar bears' greasy fur</h2>



<p>The study was led by Julian Carolan, a PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry at <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trinity College Dublin</a> and the <a href="https://ambercentre.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMBER Research Ireland Centre</a>.</p>



<p>“We measured ice adhesion strength, which is a useful measure of how well ice sticks to fur; hydrophobicity, which dictates whether water can be shed before it freezes; and freezing delay time, which simply shows how long it takes for a drop of water to freeze at certain temperatures on a given surface,” explained Carolan.</p>



<p>“We then compared the performance of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bear-conservation-leaps-forward-with-new-tracking-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bear</a> hair with that of human hair and two types of specialist human-made ‘ski skins.'"</p>



<p>The results confirmed that greasy, unwashed polar bear hair strongly resists ice. When washed, the fur lost its grease and performed similarly to human hair, to which ice sticks easily.</p>



<p>Further chemical analysis revealed a surprising detail - polar bear sebum does not contain squalene. This fatty compound is common in human hair and in aquatic mammals like sea otters. Its absence in polar bears suggests a key evolutionary adaptation that helps them resist ice accumulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-inspired-innovation">Nature-inspired innovation</h2>



<p>Dr. Richard Hobbs highlighted the broader impact of this discovery. "Animals living in polar habitats have emerged as a source of inspiration for the development of new anti-icing materials,” he said.</p>



<p>“For example, Anne Kietzig’s group at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McGill&nbsp;University</a>&nbsp;recently found that the hierarchical structure of Gentoo penguin feathers afforded them anti-icing properties that relied on the feather structure rather than the preen oil coating." </p>



<p>"Our work shows that polar bear fur provides an alternative strategy to produce an anti-icing surface based on the characteristic blend of lipids present in their fur sebum or hair grease.”</p>



<p>This study not only clarifies why polar bears avoid ice buildup but also suggests new ways to create sustainable, ice-resistant coatings. Researchers hope to replace environmentally harmful chemicals like PFAS, commonly used in current anti-icing coatings, with alternatives inspired by nature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-properties-of-polar-bear-fur">Unique properties of polar bear fur</h2>



<p>Beyond its scientific applications, this discovery provides valuable insights into polar bear hunting techniques and Inuit traditions.</p>



<p>Professor Bodil Holst from the <a href="https://www.uib.no/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of&nbsp;Bergen</a>&nbsp;explained how this adaptation benefits polar bears in the wild.</p>



<p>“One of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bears-are-suffering-from-painful-ice-balls-stuck-on-their-feet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">polar bears</a>’ main hunting strategies is ‘still hunting,’ where they lay motionless beside a breathing hole on sea ice waiting for seals to surface. Still hunting frequently develops into an ‘aquatic stalk’ with the polar bear using its hind paws to slide into the water to pursue its prey, and the lower the ice adhesion, the less noise generated and the faster and quieter the slide.”</p>



<p>Inuit hunters have long understood this advantage. They sometimes cover their hunting stools with polar bear fur to reduce noise while moving on ice. Additionally,&nbsp;polar bear trousers (made using the same principle) allow hunters to move quietly without alerting prey.</p>



<p>Importantly, traditional Inuit preparation methods preserve the natural grease in the fur. Unlike fox fur, which is often cleaned with soapstone or dry clay, polar bear fur is kept unwashed to maintain its unique properties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-technology">Implications for future technology </h2>



<p>This research not only deepens our understanding of Arctic survival but also has practical implications for future technology.</p>



<p>By studying how nature prevents ice buildup, scientists aim to create more sustainable solutions for industries that require ice-resistant materials.</p>

<p>Forests along Brazil’s rivers have played a crucial role in connecting the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests for millions of years. These green corridors have allowed tree species to migrate between the two forests, even though they are separated by vast expanses of dry forest and savanna. </p>



<p>Until now, researchers believed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-relocating-in-a-race-against-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree</a> migration only occurred during wetter climatic periods when rainforests expanded across South America. However, a new study from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a> reveals a different story.</p>



<p>The research challenges the long-held assumption that tree species only moved between the Amazon and Atlantic forests during rare climate shifts. Instead, the study suggests that species have been dispersing continuously over time, using riverside forests as natural highways. </p>



<p>This discovery reshapes the understanding of how rainforest biodiversity has evolved and highlights the ongoing importance of these ecological corridors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tree-migration-through-generations">Tree migration through generations</h2>



<p>Rather than short-term bursts of movement, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/many-tree-species-are-moving-to-colder-and-wetter-regions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree species</a> have migrated slowly over many generations. The researchers found that trees growing along rivers helped species move gradually across the dry landscapes of Brazil.</p>



<p>“Rather than tree species being exchanged during specific wetter periods in the past, we found that species have dispersed consistently over time,” said Dr. James Nicholls of <a href="https://www.rbge.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RBGE</a>.</p>



<p>The study was focused on 164 species of <em>Inga</em> trees, a genus found widely in Latin American rainforests. By analyzing the DNA of these trees, the researchers reconstructed their evolutionary history, determining when different species diverged from their ancestors.</p>



<p>Mapping the locations of various&nbsp;<em>Inga</em>&nbsp;species further revealed patterns of movement between the Amazon and Atlantic forests.</p>



<p>This detailed genetic analysis uncovered a consistent pattern of species migration that spanned millions of years. The findings suggest that rainforest connectivity has depended not just on large-scale climate changes but also on localized ecological networks along rivers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-trees-migrate-more">Amazon trees migrate more</h2>



<p>The study identified 16 to 20 instances where tree species from the Amazon successfully established themselves in the Atlantic forest. These events were spread across evolutionary history rather than being concentrated in specific periods when Brazil had a wetter climate. </p>



<p>The findings indicate that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-moving-to-soils-that-lack-the-fungi-to-support-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trees</a> have been able to migrate across dry regions at a slow but steady pace, rather than relying on rare climate-driven rainforest expansions.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers found only one or two cases where tree species moved in the opposite direction—from the Atlantic rainforest to the Amazon. This suggests an imbalance in species migration, likely due to the Amazon’s vast size and greater seed production. </p>



<p>Because the Amazon is much larger, it likely sends out a greater number of seeds, increasing the chances of successful migration to the Atlantic forest.</p>



<p>This discovery reshapes the understanding of rainforest dynamics, showing that species movement is not just a relic of past climate changes but an ongoing process. It also suggests that even in modern times, forest corridors remain vital for biodiversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-brazil-s-riverside-forests">Protecting Brazil’s riverside forests</h2>



<p>The research highlights the importance of conserving forests along Brazil’s rivers. These green corridors allow <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-forests-which-tree-species-can-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree species</a> to continue moving between the two rainforests, maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. </p>



<p>Brazilian law already provides legal protection for riverside forests, recognizing their critical role in preserving the country’s natural ecosystems.</p>



<p>“This legal protection - and efforts to preserve these riverside forests - are highly valuable for long-term habitat connectivity,” said Professor Toby Pennington from Exeter’s Department of Geography and the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/institutes/gsi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Systems Institute</a>.</p>



<p>Beyond their role in species migration, these forests are essential for sustaining the extraordinary biodiversity of the Atlantic rainforest trees.</p>



<p>The Atlantic rainforest is home to approximately 3,000 more plant species than the Amazon, yet only 20% of it remains intact. Habitat destruction has put many species at risk, making conservation efforts more urgent than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-maintaining-rainforest-connections">Maintaining rainforest connections </h2>



<p>“In the short term, we need to protect these precious rainforests. In the long term, our study shows that we must also conserve the connections between them,” said Pennington.</p>



<p>Protecting the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests requires more than just safeguarding individual patches of forest. It also depends on maintaining the ecological links that have allowed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-have-an-amazing-ability-to-adapt-to-new-climates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree</a> species to migrate and adapt over millions of years.</p>



<p>Ensuring the survival of riverside forests will not only help preserve the unique biodiversity of both rainforests but also support the broader health of Brazil’s ecosystems.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
