<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>In today’s digital age, educators constantly seek innovative ways to engage students and enhance learning outcomes. A recent study by researchers from Ateneo de Manila University reveals that incorporating internet memes into science education can significantly improve students’ learning and retention of complex topics. </p>



<p>Conducted by Alyanna Nicole Carlos and Dr. Emmanuel Delocado, the study explored how humor and cultural relevance can make science more accessible, especially for non-STEM senior high school students.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meme-based-learning-in-science">Meme-based learning in science</h2>



<p>The research focused on Grade 11 students from private high schools in the Philippines, particularly those in non-STEM tracks who are still required to take biology as part of their curriculum. </p>



<p>A total of 200 students who participated in the study were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received meme-infused lessons and a control group that followed traditional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/math-anxiety-can-be-cured-with-colors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">teaching methods</a> without memes.</p>



<p>Over a five-week period, both groups learned about complex biology topics, including cellular division and genetics. </p>



<p>However, the experimental group also engaged in activities that involved creating their own memes based on the lessons. This approach encouraged creativity and deeper engagement with the subject matter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-memes-on-learning">Impact of memes on learning</h2>



<p>To evaluate the effectiveness of meme-based teaching, researchers used pre-tests and post-tests with 30 questions each. </p>



<p>These tests assessed students’ comprehension and retention of key biological concepts. Additionally, surveys measured students’ attitudes toward science and their confidence in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-it-comes-to-practice-and-learning-variety-is-key/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning</a> biology.</p>



<p>The results were striking. Students who were taught using memes scored 21% higher on their post-tests than those who received traditional instruction. The experimental group achieved an average score of 21.46 correct answers, while the control group averaged only 17.74.</p>



<p>Beyond improving test scores, the study revealed that meme-based learning had a positive psychological effect on students. Those exposed to memes developed a more favorable attitude toward biology and reported greater confidence in their ability to grasp and apply scientific concepts. </p>



<p>The use of humor in learning reduced anxiety and made science lessons more engaging and memorable.</p>

<p>“Humor and culture can be powerful tools in education. Memes can make even the most intimidating subjects accessible,” noted Dr. Emmanuel Delocado.</p>



<p>This aligns with existing research in education psychology, which suggests that positive emotions enhance cognitive processing and improve long-term knowledge retention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creating-memes-for-better-learning">Creating memes for better learning</h2>



<p>One of the most effective aspects of this study was the inclusion of student-generated memes. By encouraging learners to create their own content, educators allowed them to actively engage with scientific concepts in a way that resonated with their personal experiences.</p>

<p>From adding up lunch bills to juggling monthly expenses, mathematics can feel like a steep climb for many people. The frustration can become so intense that some avoid any numbers that seem daunting, losing out on jobs and opportunities in the process. </p>



<p>It’s no wonder that organizations tracking adult skills keep pointing to math anxiety as a serious barrier to well-being. </p>



<p>Math anxiety doesn’t just hinder academic progress; it also impacts career opportunities, financial literacy, and overall confidence in navigating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-brain-uses-context-to-make-complex-decisions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">daily life</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-color-transforms-perception-in-mathematics">Color transforms perception in mathematics</h2>



<p>Artist and educator Brook Tate says he once felt paralyzed at the mention of even basic number problems. He had hoped to become a children’s nurse, but he struggled with the numeric test required for nursing school. </p>



<p>While this setback discouraged him, he looked for a new approach that would make numbers less intimidating. He traveled, worked with children in India, and found himself questioning the usual ways of teaching math.</p>



<p>Tate, who lives in Bristol, was inspired by the legacy of mathematician Alan Turing and decided to mix art, color, and pattern to ease math anxiety. He says a vibrant dream on Munroe Island sparked his color-coded method, leading to ideas about how shapes and colors could represent digits from 0 to 9. </p>



<p>“I woke up and thought, ‘That’s math, I don’t know how, but that is math,’” said Tate. He calls it the <a href="https://www.multicolourmaths.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multicolour math method</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-patterns-that-calm-and-motivate">Patterns that calm and motivate</h2>



<p>Tate suggests that assigning each digit its own color helps people see how addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division link together visually. The shapes are arranged like building blocks, and individuals can rearrange them into patterns that quickly highlight relationships between numbers. </p>



<p>Tate tried his approach in workshops with both adults and children at <a href="https://www.callicroftprimary.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Callicroft Primary Academy.</a> The school’s teacher, Luke Guest, said, “I believe it’s going to help them."</p>



<p>Advocates of this approach say that once math is presented as a puzzle of colors and shapes, the usual dread fades. The calmness of drawing and coloring encourages a new perspective. </p>



<p>Tate feels it’s been transformative in his own life. "I love math now, it’s cured my math anxiety, math for me is now like an endless poem and song."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-attitudes-matter">Why attitudes matter</h2>



<p>Struggling with math is not just a classroom issue. Numbers follow people through rent payments, job interviews, recipe portions, and everyday money decisions. Those who feel overwhelmed by figures sometimes avoid career paths that require even modest math skills.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That avoidance can have serious consequences later, since research shows that low numeracy can hurt job prospects and incomes. One <a href="https://dera.ioe.ac.uk/22309/1/doc_3186.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> found that lower math skills may lead to fewer employment opportunities and more time spent unemployed.</p>



<p>Sam Sims from the charity National Numeracy has been urging businesses, public institutions, and community groups to join forces to help everyone gain more confidence in their math abilities. “Progress will require systemic change,” said Sims.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-number-skills-change-lives-and-economies">Number skills change lives and economies</h2>



<p>Researchers note that limited number skills can come with emotional and financial burdens. Data from a study points to poor numeracy costing the UK economy around £20 billion a year, mainly through lost productivity and unemployment.</p>



<p>According to another international <a href="https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/104394/pdf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survey</a>, 57.4% of English adults score below the level of numeric skill expected of children aged 9 to 11.3. </p>



<p>Educators warn that math anxiety can begin early and linger, reinforcing the notion that certain people just can’t grasp numbers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-fresh-way-to-learn">A fresh way to learn</h2>



<p>Tate believes his color-coded system offers a route out of these difficulties by turning numbers into something you can see rather than fear. He says that when teachers and parents encourage creativity in a math lesson, learners are more relaxed and willing to give new methods a try. </p>



<p>Additional researchers have also shown interest in this approach. Tom Crawford from Oxford University finds the visual system intriguing and is open to a formal study with children and adults. “I’d be interested to create a more formal study,” said Dr. Crawford.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, some participants from Tate’s pilot sessions say they finally feel safe exploring math without embarrassment. One reason is that the approach gives them an immediate sense of playfulness, rather than the usual panic. </p>



<p>Placing colorful tiles or shapes in a pattern can feel more like a craft activity, and the final design draws the eye away from old feelings of shame around numbers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspectives-in-mathematics-education">New perspectives in mathematics education</h2>



<p>Tate hopes his multicolor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-impossibility-made-possible-using-exotic-mathematics/">math method</a> can bring new confidence to families, teachers, and even advanced researchers who find certain equations baffling. He wants to partner with more schools and possibly run large-scale trials in collaboration with higher education experts. </p>



<p>Though he started with modest experiments, his belief that art and color can soften math anxiety has grown stronger, especially after seeing children grasp new concepts within minutes.</p>



<p>He knows his bright collection of shapes won’t replace traditional methods or official exams, but he’s certain it can give math-shy learners a foot in the door. Feeling comfortable with numbers leads to better prospects at work, improved financial decisions, and less stress around everyday tasks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These results matter for all ages, from students tackling their first times table to adults juggling mortgage payments. Tate’s dream-inspired discovery arrives at a moment when many people are searching for better ways to make numbers click. </p>



<p>Even though math can seem like a puzzle without a solution, Tate's method shows that color might be the spark missing in conventional approaches.</p>

<p>Mothers give birth to daughters from fertile eggs that haven't been fertilized by any male counterpart.</p>



<p>This process, known as parthenogenesis, gives rise to an all-female population - a peculiar characteristic that has caught the attention of scientists around the globe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asexual-reproduction-in-mites">Asexual reproduction in mites</h2>



<p>Scientists at the <a href="https://www.uni-koeln.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cologne</a>, along with their international colleagues, set out to investigate the remarkable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asexual-reproduction-can-negatively-impact-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">asexual reproduction</a> of oribatid mites.</p>



<p>The study revealed that the secret to the mites' survival is in the independent evolution of their double chromosome copies - a concept known as the "Meselson effect."</p>



<p>Through the use of genome sequencing techniques, the researchers identified several factors that contribute to the genetic diversity of the chromosome sets which could, in turn, ensure the mite's long-term preservation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolving-chromosomes-and-genetic-diversity">Evolving chromosomes and genetic diversity</h2>



<p>The oribatid mite is a living contradiction of the evolutionary principle, surviving over 20 million years without any trace of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/males-are-responsible-for-the-genetic-fitness-of-a-population/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sexual reproduction</a>.</p>



<p>These mites produce female offspring from unfertilized eggs, sidelining males to nonexistence or sheer rarity - thus, making no contribution to the gene pool.</p>



<p>In contrast to our understanding, the offspring inherit either all or some of the mother’s gene variants (alleles), turning into an identical copy of the mother.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the mite's two chromosome sets evolve independently, allowing the introduction of new genetic variants while preserving essential information. </p>



<p>These changes enable rapid adaptation to environmental fluctuations, providing a selective advantage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-tools-in-the-genetic-toolbox">New tools in the genetic toolbox</h2>



<p>The research highlights horizontal gene transfer (HGT) as another mechanism that enhances <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-asexual-ants-maintain-genetic-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">genetic diversity</a>. HGT refers to the exchange of genetic material outside the boundaries of sexual reproduction.</p>



<p>From a metaphorical perspective, horizontal gene transfer is similar to adding new tools to a preexisting toolbox.</p>



<p>"Some of these genes seem to help the mite to digest cell walls, thus expanding its food spectrum," noted study lead author Dr Hüsna Öztoprak, an expert in the Institute of Zoology at the University of Cologne.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-jumping-genes">The role of "jumping genes"</h2>



<p>Transposable elements (TEs), or '<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-fungus-has-become-more-deadly-thanks-to-jumping-genes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jumping genes</a>,' also play a significant role. They are dynamic components of the genome, exerting influence by altering their locations, akin to rearranging chapters in a book to change the plot's trajectory.</p>



<p>The excitement lies in the different activity levels of TEs in the two chromosome copies. One copy demonstrates an active state that allows for dynamic transformations, while the other remains relatively inactive.</p>



<p>The findings of the study add significant value to understanding the survival strategies of asexual organisms. </p>



<p>"In future research projects, we would like to find out whether there are additional mechanisms that might be important for evolution without sex,” said Dr. Jens Bast, Emmy Noether group leader at the University of Cologne.</p>

<p>Most people are left confounded and flummoxed when presented with the most basic concepts of quantum mechanics. That's because they make no sense to any rational mind, so please don't take this statement as any type of slight. </p>



<p>This is especially true when discussing something called "superposition" - where a particle can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exist in multiple states</a> at the same time until someone actually measures it.</p>



<p>One of the most memorable thought experiments used to explain superposition is through the story of Schrödinger’s cat, which paints a picture of a hypothetical feline that is simultaneously alive and dead inside a box. </p>



<p>When someone opens the box to observe the cat, the superposition is broken, and the cat definitively becomes one or the other: alive or dead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schrodinger-s-cat-explains-quantum-strangeness">Schrödinger’s cat explains quantum strangeness</h2>



<p>Of course, we never encounter boxes containing real animals in that type of bizarre dual state, yet researchers continually explore and test superpositions of much smaller particles. </p>



<p>They do this for many reasons, but for the purposes of this research, a team of scientists focused on particle superposition because they believe it holds the secret to error-free <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/google-record-shattering-quantum-ai-chip-accesses-parallel-universes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing</a>.</p>



<p>Quantum computers display processing <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/highereducation/books/quantum-computation-and-quantum-information/01E10196D0A682A6AEFFEA52D53BE9AE#overview" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">power</a> that monumentally eclipses anything that modern traditional computers or supercomputers can manage.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/staff/andrea-morello" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrea Morello</a> from the University of New South Wales (<a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNSW</a>) has been at the forefront of turning these quantum properties into a secure and efficient way to store and process information.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antimony-as-the-quantum-cat">Antimony as the quantum cat</h2>



<p><a href="https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=pYmHeC8AAAAJ&amp;hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xi Yu</a>, a researcher in the same UNSW group, describes their latest feat as creating a quantum atomic take on this cat story.</p>



<p>“In our work, the ‘cat’ is an <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/element/Antimony" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atom of antimony</a>,” explains Xi Yu, who was lead author of the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41567-024-02745-0#Abs1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a>.</p>



<p>Antimony is no ordinary atom. It has a nuclear spin with <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prresearch/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.5.033105" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eight possible directions</a>, unlike simpler two-state systems called qubits.</p>



<p>That larger range protects the encoded data from sudden changes that would normally disrupt more fragile qubits.</p>



<p>A typical qubit can flip if anything nudges it, and one flip may turn a zero into a one, foiling any crucial calculation. The antimony approach helps avoid that vulnerability.</p>



<p>“As the proverb goes, a cat has nine lives. One little scratch is not enough to kill it,” says Xi Yu.</p>



<p>Each small error leaves most of the data intact, making it easier to notice and fix any trouble before it gets worse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schrodinger-s-cat-inside-a-silicon-chip">Schrödinger’s cat inside a silicon chip</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/staff/danni-holmes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Danielle Holmes</a> at UNSW built a silicon chip that can hold this single antimony atom. It grants full control over the spin state, and it is fashioned with the same material found in typical consumer electronics.</p>



<p>This opens the door for large-scale production methods that already exist. </p>



<p>The prospect of connecting many atoms on a chip may allow <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/materials-science/quantum-device" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum devices</a> to be assembled using machinery that has served the regular semiconductor industry for decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-error-correction-with-quantum-cats">Error correction with quantum cats</h2>



<p>“A single, or even a few errors, do not immediately scramble the information,” says Morello, a professor at UNSW. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-teleportation-of-logical-qubits-performed-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum error correction</a> is a central challenge, since even minute glitches can cascade and ruin complicated tasks. </p>



<p>By using antimony’s expanded spin space, the design does not topple when faced with a small slip. That extra buffer slows down error accumulation, so there is a higher chance of fixing mistakes in time.</p>



<p>Each quantum bit, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-quantum-computers-just-got-easier-with-new-technique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">qubit</a>, remains stable under minor disturbances that would derail simpler systems. Once a disturbance shows up, the device can often preserve the right values.</p>



<p>This relieves some of the burden from correction algorithms. With fewer surprises to manage, researchers hope these extra-robust qubits will lead to larger, more complex quantum circuits that can solve problems outside the reach of standard computers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-in-quantum-computing">Next steps in quantum computing</h2>



<p>Scientists plan to refine their tools for spotting and fixing errors the moment they pop up. They aim to push reliability high enough for lengthy <a href="https://scienceexchange.caltech.edu/topics/quantum-science-explained/quantum-superposition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">computing</a> tasks.</p>



<p>Morello notes that this “Schrödinger’s cat” analogy shows how quantum systems can be both delicate and sturdy. </p>



<p>By improving this technology, the team hopes to overcome one of the toughest hurdles to a fully fledged quantum computer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>Quantum machines could support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/code-breaking-encryption-quantum-computers-takes-big-step-closer-to-becoming-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">safer cryptography</a>, simulate large-scale phenomena, and sift through colossal data sets.</p>



<p>Engineers foresee a hybrid model where single-atom components work alongside today’s circuits, taking advantage of industrial processes that are already in place.</p>



<p>Though it may take time to perfect, early results suggest these unusual, cat-like states might boost the resilience of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum hardware</a>, and pave the way for a new era of computing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewriting-quantum-rules">Rewriting quantum rules</h2>



<p>Teams worldwide keep testing different spins and elements, hunting for ways to control errors without overloading hardware resources. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-45368-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">High-dimensional nuclear spins </a>may be a vital stepping stone in this pursuit.</p>



<p>By letting these spins act like sturdy bits, researchers cut down the complicated fixes usually required. The hope is that robust qudit-based strategies will open the door to leaner and more powerful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> machines.</p>



<p>Experts from UNSW Sydney, the <a href="https://www.unimelb.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Melbourne</a>, <a href="https://www.sandia.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sandia National Laboratories</a>, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/ames/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA Ames</a>, and the <a href="https://ucalgary.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Calgary</a> joined forces for this research. They tackled materials growth, device engineering, and advanced theoretical modeling.</p>



<p>Together, they turned a classic thought experiment into a workable unit that might, someday soon, accelerate quantum technology to the point where we achieve error-free quantum computing at mass scale.</p>

<p>While efforts to tackle global warming have taken various forms - some more effective than others - biochar stands out for its dual benefits of promoting soil health and sequestering carbon.</p>



<p>A new study now reveals its largely untapped potential as a long-term CO₂ removal solution that surpasses conventional expectations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-biochar-and-carbon">Climate, biochar, and carbon</h2>



<p>The study - a collaborative effort from Professor Hamed Sanei of <a href="https://international.au.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aarhus University</a>, Professor Henrik Ingermann Petersen from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (<a href="https://eng.geus.dk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GEUS</a>), among others - spotlights biochar's overlooked potential.</p>



<p>Published in the journal <em>Biochar</em>, the study tears down the inadequate climate models of the IPCC and European climate policymakers.</p>



<p>"The previous models underestimated the stability of carbon stored in biochar. By correcting these inaccuracies, we can elevate biochar to its rightful place as a highly reliable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-practices-boost-soil-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon storage</a> option,” remarked Professor Hamed Sanei.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biochar-a-carbon-storage-solution">Biochar: A carbon storage solution</h2>



<p>Biochar is a type of charcoal that farmers and gardeners are using to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-adopt-regenerative-agriculture-better-soil-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">boost soil health</a> and fight climate change. </p>



<p>They make biochar by heating organic materials like wood, crop residues, or manure in a low-oxygen environment, a process called pyrolysis. </p>

<p>Biochar's ability to improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability is probably its most important trait.</p>



<p>It acts as a sponge, holding onto essential nutrients and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Additionally, its porous structure supports microbial activity, which promotes healthier soil ecosystems.</p>



<p>These benefits have made biochar an attractive option for farmers and environmentalists alike.</p>



<p>However, despite its many advantages, its potential has been overshadowed by skepticism regarding its long-term stability and effectiveness in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forest-modeling-study-reveals-new-insights-into-carbon-sequestration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sequestration</a>. </p>



<p>Past climate models have failed to fully acknowledge the enduring nature of biochar's stored carbon, a situation which this new research aims to address.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unearthed-flaws-in-previous-models">Unearthed flaws in previous models</h2>



<p>The novel study uncovers the oversights in the widely accepted carbon modeling frameworks.</p>

<p>“Our work corrects the narrative and highlights biochar’s exceptional capacity for long-term carbon storage. It’s a ready-to-implement technology that can make an immediate impact,” stated Professor Henrik Ingermann Petersen from GEUS.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-denmark-leads-the-charge">Denmark leads the charge</h2>



<p>The findings illustrate Denmark's forward-thinking climate initiatives. Recognizing biochar's critical role, Denmark is on the front line to achieving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reaching-carbon-neutrality-will-not-be-easy-in-california/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon neutrality</a> by 2050.</p>



<p>“This study provides policymakers and stakeholders with the tools they need to integrate biochar into carbon markets with confidence,” said Professor Ondrej Masek from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a>, one of the paper's authors.</p>



<p>The authors express hope that their revelations will spur immediate action among policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers. </p>



<p>With accurate models now at their disposal, biochar, and slow pyrolysis can finally claim their rightful spot as trusted, scientifically validated solutions for carbon dioxide removal.</p>



<p>"This isn’t just a story about biochar - it's about the future of carbon removal,” stated Professor David Chiaramonti from the <a href="https://www.polito.it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Politecnico di Torino</a>. </p>



<p>“By improving the accuracy of our models, we unlock the potential of technologies like biochar that are ready to scale today.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Following this confirmation of biochar's full potential, its integration into mainstream policies related to the climate and frameworks of sustainability would seem to be a pressing task.</p>



<p>Policy makers, industries, and researchers need coordination to scale up production, standardize guidelines for its usage, and include it in carbon credit markets.</p>



<p>This will help biochar to shift from a largely unexploited resource to become the backbone of strategies for combating climate change.</p>



<p>Beyond its applications in agriculture, ongoing research has investigated other innovative applications for biochar.</p>



<p>As technologies continue to make production efficient and cheap, its use is expected to mitigate climate change extensively. </p>

What is 'biochar' and how can it help us mitigate climate change?

Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced by pyrolyzing biomass, is emerging...

<p>A recent study&nbsp;by Global Fishing Watch has uncovered an immense quantity of previously untracked vessel activity at sea.</p>



<p>The ocean has long been a vast and mysterious frontier, covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface. It is the lifeblood of global trade, a crucial source of food, and a key player in energy production. Yet, despite its importance, much of what happens on its surface remains shrouded in secrecy. </p>



<p>By leveraging satellite imagery, vessel GPS data, and artificial intelligence, researchers have created a detailed map of industrial vessel movements and offshore energy infrastructure.</p>



<p>The findings reveal staggering gaps in public tracking systems, raising urgent concerns about maritime transparency, environmental sustainability, and global security.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-vessels-at-sea">Dark vessels at sea</h2>



<p>For years, maritime organizations and governments have relied on the&nbsp;Automatic Identification System (AIS)&nbsp;to track vessel movements. While AIS is useful for monitoring registered ships, it has significant limitations. </p>



<p>Not all countries mandate its use, and many vessels turn off their transponders to avoid detection, particularly those engaging in illegal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-fishing-gets-a-boost-from-genomics-roadmap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a>, smuggling, and other illicit activities.</p>



<p>The&nbsp;experts found that between&nbsp;72% and 76% of the world’s industrial fishing vessels are not publicly tracked - a striking figure that highlights the hidden scale of commercial fishing operations.</p>



<p>Even more concerning,&nbsp;21% to 30% of transport and energy vessel activity is missing from public monitoring systems, further obscuring the true scale of industrial use of the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-fishing-activity">Hidden fishing activity </h2>



<p>Most of this untracked activity occurs in&nbsp;South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the northern and western coasts of Africa. These regions, rich in marine biodiversity, are also hotspots for illegal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-hidden-consequences-of-catch-and-release-sport-fishing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a>, overexploitation of marine resources, and environmental degradation. </p>



<p>Without a reliable and transparent tracking system, governments and conservationists struggle to enforce regulations, protect fish stocks, and monitor maritime security.</p>



<p>The implications of this dark vessel activity extend far beyond fishing. More than&nbsp;one billion people depend on the ocean as their primary food source, and&nbsp;260 million people are directly employed by global marine fisheries.</p>



<p>Additionally,&nbsp;80% of all traded goods are transported via ocean routes, and&nbsp;nearly 30% of the world’s oil production occurs offshore. Without accurate tracking, illegal activities such as&nbsp;forced labor, human trafficking, and environmental crimes&nbsp;can continue unchecked, undermining efforts to promote sustainable ocean management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-satellites-reveal-dark-vessels">AI and satellites reveal dark vessels </h2>



<p>To address the limitations of AIS and other conventional tracking systems, the researchers turned to artificial intelligence and satellite technology.</p>



<p>They used deep learning models to scan a staggering&nbsp;two petabytes of satellite imagery&nbsp;from the&nbsp;European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellite constellation. This AI-powered system was trained to detect and classify vessels with remarkable accuracy, far surpassing previous methods.</p>



<p>The team&nbsp;designed and trained three deep convolutional neural networks&nbsp;to analyze satellite imagery and vessel GPS data. </p>



<p>These models achieved an&nbsp;object detection accuracy of over 97%, a&nbsp;classification accuracy of 98% for offshore infrastructure, and a&nbsp;90% accuracy rate for distinguishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-fishing-must-be-redefined-to-halt-ocean-destruction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a> vessels from non-fishing vessels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-untracked-vessel-activity">Unveiling untracked vessel activity</h2>



<p>The dataset used for this analysis was massive. Researchers examined&nbsp;67 million image tiles, including&nbsp;53 billion AIS vessel positions, to determine which ships were actively broadcasting their location and which were operating in the shadows. </p>



<p>The&nbsp;resolution of the satellite radar allowed the team to detect objects as small as 15 meters, making it possible to track industrial fishing vessels, cargo ships, tankers, and offshore infrastructure with unprecedented clarity.</p>



<p>"Our satellite mapping revealed high densities of vessel activity in large areas of the ocean that previously showed little to no vessel activity by public tracking systems," the research team stated.</p>



<p>The study’s findings have already&nbsp;reshaped our understanding of global maritime activity, revealing areas where fishing and transport vessels operate without oversight. </p>



<p>This new method of tracking vessels will be&nbsp;instrumental in identifying illegal fishing hotspots, detecting human rights violations at sea, and improving enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rise-of-offshore-energy-wind-vs-oil">Rise of offshore energy: Wind vs. oil</h2>



<p>Beyond vessel movements, the study also mapped the rapid expansion of offshore energy infrastructure. </p>



<p>By&nbsp;2021, offshore wind turbines had surpassed oil structures in number, a significant milestone in the transition toward renewable energy. Wind power accounted for&nbsp;48% of all offshore structures, while oil installations made up&nbsp;38%.</p>



<p>Despite the growth of wind energy,&nbsp;oil-related vessel traffic still dwarfs that of wind infrastructure, with oil platforms generating&nbsp;five times more vessel activity&nbsp;than wind farms. The global shift to offshore renewables is happening, but oil remains dominant in terms of maritime traffic and industrial footprint.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-footprint-of-offshore-energy">Growing footprint of offshore energy</h2>



<p>The study from <a href="https://globalfishingwatch.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Fishing Watch</a> found that offshore wind farms are&nbsp;highly concentrated in northern Europe (52%) and China (45%), with China experiencing an extraordinary&nbsp;900% increase in offshore wind turbines from 2017 to 2021. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, offshore oil infrastructure remains concentrated in&nbsp;the Gulf of Mexico, the Persian Gulf, and Southeast Asia, with the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia leading in oil platform installations.</p>



<p>As renewable energy infrastructure continues to grow, understanding how these structures interact with existing maritime industries will be crucial. The study found that&nbsp;trawlers avoid fishing within one kilometer of oil platforms, likely to prevent net entanglement. </p>



<p>However, other fishing activities&nbsp;increase around offshore infrastructure, as these structures can serve as artificial reefs that attract marine life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-maritime-surveillance">Future of maritime surveillance</h2>



<p>In addition to satellite-based vessel tracking, new AI-driven technologies are set to&nbsp;revolutionize real-time ship detection. The&nbsp;Rapid Earth Monitoring Information System (REMIS), developed in partnership with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>, <a href="https://www.stcorp.nl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">S[&amp;]T</a>, <a href="https://www.vake.ai" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vake</a>, and <a href="https://emlogic.no" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EmLogic</a> in Norway, promises to&nbsp;locate ships in hours instead of days.</p>



<p>Current satellite monitoring relies on&nbsp;downlinking images, processing them on the ground, and analyzing them manually, which can take days. By the time authorities receive data, dark vessels may have moved on, making enforcement difficult.</p>



<p>REMIS will&nbsp;pre-filter images in space, prioritizing those containing ships before sending them to ground stations. This drastically reduces&nbsp;data transmission time and processing costs, enabling authorities to&nbsp;track vessels in near real-time.</p>



<p>“If we can already identify ships onboard and potentially even combine it with AI systems, we could mark dark vessels and prioritize the scenes containing ships or their locations,” explains&nbsp;Maris Tali, the technical officer leading the project.</p>



<p>This system will be particularly valuable for&nbsp;detecting illegal fishing vessels, preventing ship collisions, and redirecting maritime traffic during emergencies. It represents a&nbsp;significant leap forward in global ocean monitoring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-covid-19-on-fishing-activity">Impact of COVID-19 on fishing activity</h2>



<p>The study also examined how maritime activity was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While&nbsp;global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-has-caused-a-50-decline-in-sharks-and-rays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a> activity dropped by 12% in 2020, it has&nbsp;not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. However, transport and energy-related vessel activity remained relatively&nbsp;unaffected&nbsp;during the same period.</p>



<p>This decline in fishing is part of a&nbsp;longer-term trend. Since the 1980s,&nbsp;global marine fish catch has remained stagnant, as many fisheries have reached or exceeded sustainable limits. Meanwhile,&nbsp;offshore energy and maritime trade continue to expand, reshaping human interactions with the ocean.</p>



<p>As industrialization of the ocean accelerates, conflicts between fisheries, energy developers, and conservationists are likely to increase. </p>



<p>Understanding these trends is essential for&nbsp;policymakers, environmental groups, and industry leaders&nbsp;to make informed decisions about marine resource management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-call-for-transparency-and-accountability">Call for transparency and accountability</h2>



<p>The findings of this study highlight the urgent need for&nbsp;greater transparency in maritime activity. With three-quarters of industrial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-pushing-freshwater-fish-toward-the-poles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a> occurring&nbsp;outside public tracking systems, governments must adopt&nbsp;stricter regulations and better enforcement mechanisms.</p>



<p>AI-powered satellite monitoring and real-time detection systems like REMIS offer&nbsp;powerful new tools to combat illegal fishing, improve ocean governance, and enforce environmental protections.</p>

A recent study&nbsp;by Global Fishing Watch has uncovered an immense...

<p>The recent detection of a&nbsp;cosmic explosion by the Einstein Probe is stirring excitement among space watchers everywhere. Early last year, the probe's Wide-field X-ray Telescope spotted a mysterious X-ray burst that defies the usual patterns.</p>



<p>The strange event lasted over 15 minutes before fading from view. Astronomers suspect it could reshape theories on how these cosmic blasts begin.</p>



<p>Yuan Liu is an expert in the National Astronomical Observatories at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAO, CAS) and first author on a new paper describing the observation.</p>



<p>“It was really good to see the algorithm working fine for this event,” explained Liu, who also designed the onboard software that flagged this outburst.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strange-cosmic-explosion">Strange cosmic explosion</h2>



<p>Experts have identified the source of the explosion as a fast X-ray transient. It is tagged EP240315a and seems to be tied to a gamma-ray burst designated GRB 240315C.</p>



<p>Such intense flares are best known for releasing enormous energy across multiple wavelengths. Researchers are excited about the chance to match X-ray data with radio signals and figure out if standard models still hold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-event-linked-to-a-gamma-ray-burst">Event linked to a gamma-ray burst</h2>



<p>Roughly an hour after the X-ray peak, observers in South Africa recorded matching visible light. Additional instruments in Hawaii and Chile confirmed a redshift that places this explosion about 12.5 billion light-years away.</p>



<p>This distance indicates that the blast happened when our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-blaze-star-explosion-visible-one-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmos</a> was far younger. According to the research team, it is a rare glimpse of primordial processes that shaped early star formation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-ancient-cosmic-explosions">Exploring ancient cosmic explosions</h2>



<p>The team collaborated with Roberto Ricci, <a href="https://web.uniroma2.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Rome Tor Vergata</a>, to investigate the outburst in radio wavelengths. The experts uncovered signs of a relativistic jet consistent with typical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bursts</a> from massive star collapse.</p>



<p>“Combining the power of X-ray and radio observations hands us a new way to explore these ancient explosions even without detecting their <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/ems/12_gammarays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gamma rays</a>,” said Roberto. This multi-wavelength approach is a strong clue to the burst’s overall energy release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-powerful-jet-from-a-collapsing-star">Powerful jet from a collapsing star</h2>



<p>“Such a long delay has never been previously observed,” noted Hui Sun, a scientist at the <a href="https://gcn.nasa.gov/missions/einstein-probe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Einstein Probe Science Center</a>. EP240315a arrived hundreds of seconds before its corresponding gamma-ray signal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This difference complicates standard ideas about what triggers the blasts. Researchers are weighing new explanations for how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-novae-star-explosion-may-be-origin-phosphorus-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">burst</a> engine might fire up in stages.</p>



<p>“This tells us something really new and maybe we have to rethink the models we have for gamma-ray bursts,” said Weimin Yuan, Einstein Probe's principal investigator. He pointed to the extended soft X-ray glow as a clue to unexpected activity in the source.</p>



<p>Scientists say more bursts are needed to confirm whether EP240315a is a one-off or part of a pattern. They hope these puzzling signals might show that gamma-ray <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-year-on-mars-avalanches-icy-explosions-and-the-arrival-of-spring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bursts</a> go through previously unseen phases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-cosmic-explosion-theories">Rethinking cosmic explosion theories</h2>



<p>“This is just the starting point and really demonstrates the potential of Einstein Probe to detect cosmic explosions from the early Universe,” said Weimin. </p>



<p>The probe's wide field of view is expected to reveal more events in the distant corners of space.</p>



<p>“As soon as we opened the eyes of Einstein Probe to the sky, it found interesting new phenomena. That's pretty good and should mean that there are a lot more interesting discoveries to come,” noted Erik Kuulkers of the European Space Agency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-einstein-probe">More about the Einstein Probe </h2>



<p>Einstein Probe is a joint project led by the <a href="https://english.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, partnering with the European Space Agency and other institutions. </p>



<p>The orobe was launched from China’s Xichang site on January 9, 2024 with instruments ready to scan for uncharted X-ray outbursts.</p>



<p>The Follow-up X-ray Telescope locks onto sources flagged by its wide-view partner. This two-part approach helps scientists gather quick signals and then take a deeper look without missing fleeting moments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-cosmic-history">Early cosmic history</h2>



<p><a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0034-4885/53/8/003" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">High-redshift detections</a> can reveal how stars and galaxies formed under extreme conditions. Fresh data from future telescopes may confirm patterns or highlight even more surprises.</p>



<p>A few of these explosions could help astronomers piece together the puzzle of early cosmic history. They also hope to refine ideas about massive star endings and black hole birth.</p>



<p>Scientists remain intrigued by the bursts that appear more energetic at different stages. They are hopeful that more in-depth studies will confirm whether we need to revamp long-held assumptions.</p>



<p>Experts hope new detections will truly clarify massive star endings. The observations might reshape how we view ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/supernova-explosion-captured-in-the-constellation-gemini/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic events</a>.</p>

Strange cosmic explosion changes what we know about space

The recent detection of a&nbsp;cosmic explosion by the Einstein Probe...

<p>Scientists have discovered two continent-sized regions hidden deep within Earth's mantle, referred to in a recent study as "islands." </p>



<p>Research from <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> reveals that these regions are not only hotter than their surroundings, but are also ancient, dating back at least half a billion years or longer.</p>



<p>The findings challenge conventional theories about the Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earths-mantle-shapes-surface-topography/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mantle</a> being a well-mixed and rapidly flowing system. Instead, the research suggests there is much less flow within the mantle than previously believed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-islands-inside-earth">Hidden islands inside Earth</h2>



<p>These subterranean islands are&nbsp;buried 1,200 miles (2,000km) beneath our feet, and reach heights of roughly 620 miles (1,000km), dwarfing every mountain peak found on Earth's surface and every other planet in our solar system.</p>



<p>The regions in question, located beneath Africa and the Pacific Ocean, were first identified in the late 20th century through seismic analysis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When large earthquakes strike, they cause the Earth to resonate like a bell, producing oscillations that seismologists can analyze to reveal subsurface anomalies. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-low-seismic-velocity-provinces-llsvps">Large Low Seismic Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs)</h2>



<p>The studies showed the presence of what scientists now call Large Low Seismic Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs).</p>



<p>“Nobody knows what they are, and whether they are only a temporary phenomenon or if they have been sitting there for millions or perhaps even billions of years,” explained study senior author Arwen Deuss, a seismologist at Utrecht University.</p>

<p>Surrounding these “islands” is a graveyard of cold, sunken tectonic plates that have descended through Earth's mantle via subduction - the process by which one plate sinks beneath another. </p>



<p>Unlike the surrounding regions, seismic waves slow down significantly in the LLSVPs due to their elevated temperatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-mantle-is-still-a-mystery">Earth's mantle is still a mystery</h2>



<p>To delve deeper into these structures, Deuss and her colleague Sujania Talavera-Soza incorporated a novel approach to studying seismic waves.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Beyond analyzing how much waves slow down, they also measured “damping,” or how much energy the waves lose as they travel through the Earth.</p>



<p>“Against our expectations, we found little damping in the LLSVPs, which made the tones sound very loud there. But we did find a lot of damping in the cold slab graveyard, where the tones sounded very soft,” Talavera-Soza said.</p>



<p>The findings revealed that the LLSVPs, despite being hot, do not significantly dampen seismic waves. This contradicted expectations based on the behavior of waves in the hotter upper mantle, where both slowing and damping are observed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grain-size-plays-a-role-in-llsvps">Grain size plays a role in LLSVPs</h2>



<p>The unexpected results prompted the team to investigate the material properties of the LLSVPs. According to mineralogical analyses suggested by study co-author Laura Cobden, grain size plays a pivotal role.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the cold slab graveyard, tectonic plates recrystallize into small grains as they sink into the mantle, leading to significant energy loss as seismic waves cross numerous grain boundaries. </p>



<p>In contrast, the LLSVPs appear to consist of much larger grains, which allow waves to pass with minimal damping.</p>

<p>Since those mineral grains do not grow fast, it means that LLSVPs are much older than the surrounding slab graveyards.</p>



<p>This insight suggests the LLSVPs are not part of the mantle’s convection processes and have remained largely unchanged for vast periods - which is in stark contrast to the constantly recycling material around them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>The rigidity and age of the LLSVPs challenge the notion of the mantle as a uniformly mixed system. “After all, the LLSVPs must be able to survive mantle convection one way or another,” Talavera-Soza said.</p>



<p>This has profound implications for understanding Earth’s evolution. The mantle drives surface phenomena such as volcanism and mountain building.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, mantle plumes - columns of hot material rising from deep within the Earth - are believed to originate at the edges of LLSVPs. These plumes eventually cause <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-and-trees-predict-volcano-eruptions-when-viewed-from-space-satellites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic activity</a>, such as that seen in Hawaii.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-hidden-islands">Studying the hidden islands</h2>



<p>To study these deep regions, seismologists rely on oscillations caused by massive earthquakes, particularly those occurring at great depths, such as the 1994 Bolivia earthquake.</p>



<p>“It never made it into the newspapers because it took place at a large depth of 650 km and luckily did not result in any damage or casualties at the Earth's surface,” Deuss said.</p>



<p>Seismometers have been recording high-quality data since 1975, allowing researchers to revisit past earthquakes to gather valuable insights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-llsvps-and-earth-s-mantle">LLSVPs and Earth’s mantle</h2>



<p>This research provides a transformative view of Earth’s mantle. Instead of a uniform, well-mixed system, the mantle contains ancient, stable structures that defy conventional models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding these regions is crucial for interpreting surface phenomena and offers a clearer picture of Earth’s complex inner workings.</p>



<p>“The Earth's mantle is the engine that drives all these phenomena. Take, for example, mantle plumes, which are large bubbles of hot material that rise from the Earth's deep interior as in a lava lamp. And we think that those mantle plumes originate at the edges of the LLSVPs,” Deuss said.</p>



<p>The discovery of the LLSVPs’ unique properties and their role in shaping Earth’s surface processes marks a significant step forward in the study of our planet’s dynamic interior.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leadership-driving-east">Leadership Driving EAST</h2>



<p>A significant part of this success involves collaboration across labs and technical teams. The director of the <a href="https://www.ipp.cas.cz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Plasma Physics</a> at the <a href="https://english.hf.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hefei Institutes of Physical Science</a>, under the <a href="https://english.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, is one of the key people guiding these operations.</p>

<p>Reaching a state where fusion reactions produce net energy requires pushing the limits of temperature and duration, and that is exactly what EAST’s latest run has attempted to move closer toward.</p>

<p>Additional experimental facilities are being assembled in Hefei, aiming to speed up fusion research. </p>



<p>Many experts believe that test reactors like EAST will guide the design of next-generation projects, including the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (<a href="https://nucleus.iaea.org/sites/fusionportal/Shared%20Documents/FEC%202018/fec2018-preprints/preprint0216.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CFETR</a>).</p>

<p>“We hope to expand international collaboration via EAST and bring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-dogs-are-rapidly-evolving-in-strange-ways-due-to-nuclear-radiation-exposure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fusion</a> energy into practical use for humanity,” said SONG.</p>



<p>The momentum from EAST’s milestone has fueled discussions about how soon fusion might serve everyday needs. </p>



<p>Some commentators claim it is still decades away, while others argue that improved materials and new fusion reactor designs may accelerate progress.</p>



<p>Regardless of timelines, steady, clean power remains a priority as we search for reliable ways to satisfy growing energy demands. </p>

<p>In the ceaseless dance of evolution, it has been recently discovered that men are moving at a faster rhythm than women. This isn't a matter of opinion or casual observation, but a result of extensive analysis.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that biological and environmental factors are interacting in ways that favor men's physical development at a faster pace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-living-conditions-and-male-evolution">Living conditions and male evolution</h2>



<p>The research was led by experts at the <a href="https://unige.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Genova</a>. They have found that enhanced living conditions - including access to healthier food, superior healthcare, and reduced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-eats-away-our-brains-cognitive-defenses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> factors - have led to a rapid increase in men's stature and weight.</p>



<p>Remarkably, this growth trend appears to be passed down from generation to generation.</p>



<p>A somewhat intriguing aspect of this study is that the same positive environmental changes have not sparked comparable evolutionary progress in women. </p>



<p>This has led to the suggestion that women may not be as responsive to changes in their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-at-evolutionary-rhythms">A closer look at evolutionary rhythms</h2>



<p>Digging a bit deeper into the study, the researchers focused on more than 135,000 people from 62 different countries. </p>



<p>They used 2003 data from the World Health Organization (<a href="https://www.who.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHO</a>) as the basis of their research, specifically examining the height and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fathers-have-a-surprising-influence-on-their-babys-birth-weight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weight</a> of the individuals.</p>



<p>To add another layer to their analysis, the team weighed this data against a measure known as the Human Development Index (HDI). This tool evaluates a country's overall quality of life, taking into account factors like health, education, and income.</p>



<p>The idea was to look for a correlation between a country's living conditions and the physical characteristics of its male population.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environment-fuels-the-evolution-of-men">Environment fuels the evolution of men</h2>



<p>The results were not only intriguing but also quite significant. An increase of 0.2 in HDI resulted in men growing by 1.5 inches and gaining 14 pounds of muscle. So, to put it simply, better living conditions are making men taller and stronger.</p>



<p>The researchers explained that these changes align with basic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolution-is-not-as-random-as-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary theory</a>. Traits such as height in men are seen as signals of health and strength, making them more attractive to potential mates in the process of evolution.</p>



<p>"Consequently, this is why men assess the formidability of potential opponents using physical cues, such as upper body strength, and women find taller, muscular men with a relatively large overall <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-and-bmi-do-not-accurately-reflect-a-persons-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">body mass</a> (but not obese) particularly attractive," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-body-sizes-of-males-and-females">Body sizes of males and females</h2>



<p>This research on the evolution of men and women also touched on an interesting concept known as sexual size dimorphism (SSD). This term refers to a noticeable difference in body sizes between males and females within the same species.</p>



<p>The blanket octopus is a perfect illustration of SSD, as the females outweigh males by a factor of 40,000.</p>



<p>The study revealed that for every 0.2 increase in HDI, women gained about six pounds, while men gained about 14 pounds. A similar pattern emerged with height, with women growing roughly 0.6 inches compared to men's 1.5-inch increase.</p>



<p>The researchers also examined data specific to the UK and found that men's height increased faster than women's over time. While women's height grew by 0.25 centimeters every 5 years, the growth rate for men was 0.69 centimeters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-trends-in-evolution">Global trends in evolution </h2>



<p>The researchers concluded that as living conditions improve globally, people's height and weight increase. However, this effect is notably more pronounced in men than in women.</p>



<p>"Based on our main finding of sexual size dimorphism being greater in more favorable environments, it is clear that the development and maintenance of gross morphology is more sensitive to living conditions in men than in women," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>It's important to clarify here that these results don't suggest any form of superiority or inferiority. Instead, they attest to the complex dance of evolution and the various factors, from genetics to environmental conditions, that cause species to evolve differently.</p>



<p>Ultimately, even as our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-evolution-may-be-the-biggest-roadblock-to-solving-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human evolution</a> grows, the dance continues, and each step we learn brings with it new insights and possibilities.</p>

<p>We often admire the alpha males of the world - think of a lion ruling his pride, a CEO commanding a boardroom, or a wolf leading his pack. These males have dominance, respect, and the first pick of resources. But what if being on top wasn’t as great as it seemed? </p>



<p>For alpha baboons, for example, the price of power is steep. </p>



<p>A new study shows that these primates live under intense stress. Surprisingly, their stress doesn’t come from fighting rivals but from guarding their mates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-alpha-male">What does it mean to be an alpha male?</h2>



<p>Being an alpha male often means embodying confidence, leadership, and a strong presence in social situations. </p>



<p>People who see themselves - or others - as alpha males typically take charge in group settings, make decisive choices, and inspire others to follow their lead. </p>



<p>They usually exhibit traits like assertiveness, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-robots-with-charismatic-voices-get-better-results-from-students/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">charisma</a>, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Whether it's in the workplace, among friends, or in romantic relationships, alpha males are seen as the ones who set the tone and drive the group forward. </p>



<p>They prioritize their goals and are often highly motivated, which can make them natural leaders in various aspects of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alpha-males-and-leadership-pressure">Alpha males and leadership pressure</h2>



<p>Becoming an alpha male <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-face-an-uncertain-future-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboon</a> is no easy feat. Males must battle their way up the ranks - relying on strength, strategy, and persistence. But reaching the top is only the beginning. Staying there demands constant vigilance.</p>



<p>The dominant male must protect his status against challengers, ensuring that no rival steals his position. But his biggest concern is not other males - it is the females.</p>



<p>During fertile periods, he must closely monitor them and prevent other males from mating with them. This requires following the females around for days on end, ensuring that he remains their only mate.</p>



<p>“They’re essentially staking a claim; preventing other males from gaining access,” said Professor Susan Alberts of <a href="https://duke.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a>.</p>



<p>This near-constant surveillance takes a toll. Instead of using their time to rest, eat, or socialize, alpha males devote their energy to guarding their mates. Over time, this effort drains them both physically and mentally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-in-alpha-male-baboons">Stress in alpha male baboons</h2>



<p>For decades, scientists have studied wild baboons in Kenya as part of the <a href="https://amboselibaboons.nd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amboseli Baboon Research Project</a>. Since 1971, researchers have closely tracked the social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visually-striking-primate-features-ease-tension-and-reduce-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interactions and behaviors</a> of these animals, collecting valuable data about their lives.</p>



<p>A study published in 2011 provided one of the first clues that being an alpha male comes with a cost. The research, led by senior scientist Laurence Gesquiere at Duke University, found that alpha males had significantly higher levels of glucocorticoids - hormones linked to stress and the "fight-or-flight" response.</p>



<p>“In humans, this response is activated for every kind of challenge we face, whether it’s running down the block because you’re late for a meeting, running a marathon, or going into a stressful meeting with your boss,” Alberts explained.</p>



<p>The new study builds on these findings. The research team analyzed 14 years of behavioral data from 204 male baboons and measured their stress hormone levels using droppings left behind in the wild.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-source-of-stress">Surprising source of stress</h2>



<p>The results confirmed that life at the top is stressful. Alpha males had 6% higher glucocorticoid levels than lower-ranking males. </p>



<p>But the study also revealed something unexpected: aggressive behaviors such as fighting, bullying, or threatening rivals had no impact on the stress levels of alpha male baboons. “That was a big surprise!” Gesquiere exclaimed.</p>



<p>The researchers had expected that constant battles with other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primate-evolution-completing-the-timetree-of-life-for-all-of-our-closest-relatives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">males</a> would be the main cause of stress. Instead, they found that stress hormones spiked when alpha males spent more time guarding females.</p>



<p>Their thyroid hormone levels also dropped, indicating they were burning more calories than they consumed. This suggested that being an alpha male is not just stressful - it is physically exhausting as well.</p>



<p>“Being alpha really has energy consequences,” Gesquiere noted. Unlike lower-ranking males, who can focus on feeding and resting, alpha males are constantly on alert, even when they attempt to eat.</p>



<p>“They’re constantly interrupted,” Alberts said. “They'll start to dig up or pry open a tasty morsel, but then the female gets up and walks away, and they have to abandon it.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-cost-for-short-term-rewards">High cost for short-term rewards</h2>



<p>The constant stress of being an alpha male baboon appears to have lasting effects. Previous research on Amboseli <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/non-human-primate-chromosomes-mapped-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboons</a> found that top-ranking males age faster and have shorter lifespans than their lower-ranking counterparts.</p>



<p>Chemical changes in their DNA suggest that stress accelerates aging, and weakens their bodies over time. Once they lose their alpha status, they may struggle to recover from years of physical and emotional strain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-can-humans-learn-from-baboons">What can humans learn from baboons?</h2>



<p>While baboon society is different from human society, some parallels exist. Alpha males live in a rigid hierarchy, but humans navigate multiple social structures. A person may be a low-ranking employee at work but a leader in their sports team or community.</p>



<p>Still, the study on alpha male baboons highlights an important lesson: leadership comes with challenges, and constant stress can take a toll on well-being. In humans and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-primates-must-prioritize-survival-over-long-term-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboons</a> alike, maintaining power requires energy, focus, and sacrifice.</p>



<p>For dominant male baboons, the cost of being on top is clear. “Stress definitely has long-term consequences,” noted Gesquiere.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
