<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

<p>The question of how to handle wastewater has been an environmental concern for several decades. Yearly, billions of gallons of untreated or inadequately treated wastewater are released into rivers, lakes, and oceans. This water contaminates ecosystems and severely endangers public health.</p>



<p>Traditional methods of wastewater treatment usually involve energy-intensive processes and chemical additions, which are neither environmentally sustainable nor economically viable in the long run.</p>



<p>These issues are even more severe in arid regions, where limited water resources compound the difficulty of treating and reusing wastewater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-based-solution-for-wastewater-management">Nature-based solution for wastewater management</h2>



<p>Reed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wetlands-are-caught-in-a-battle-between-co2-and-rising-seas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wetlands</a>, or sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs), offer a breakthrough alternative. By leveraging nature to treat wastewater, STRBs minimize environmental harm while maximizing efficiency.</p>



<p>In a recent study, experts have investigated this promising solution. The team demonstrated that reed beds use natural processes to degrade pollutants and reduce sludge - a hazardous byproduct of conventional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteriophages-could-revolutionize-fracking-wastewater-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wastewater treatment</a>.</p>



<p>As nations grapple with increasing water and climate challenges, STRBs represent a critical step toward achieving global sustainability goals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-scientific-breakthrough">A scientific breakthrough </h2>



<p>The research was conducted by scientists at <a href="https://www.squ.edu.om/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sultan Qaboos University</a> and published in the journal <em>Soil &amp; Environmental Health</em>.</p>



<p>The experts have made progress in fine-tuning solutions for sludge management, particularly for arid climates.</p>



<p>The team utilized advanced 16S rRNA sequencing to identify the microbial players responsible for nutrient removal and organic matter stabilization.</p>



<p>Pilot-scale reed beds were tested under varying sludge loading rates. While the higher sludge loads led to increased bacterial diversity, they also resulted in lower community evenness.</p>



<p>Reeds, which are vital to the process, help shape microbial populations and promote the growth of nitrifying bacteria and methanogens.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-reed-beds">The science behind reed beds</h2>



<p>Several bacteria were found to have prominent roles in the process. Proteobacteria were the main drivers of critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sequestering-carbon-in-soil-is-dependent-upon-microbes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> and nitrogen cycles. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria played significant roles in organic matter degradation and nutrient removal.</p>



<p>Reeds planted in the sludge created aerobic niches and released root exudates, which enhanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-activities-underground-revealed-by-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial activity</a> and promoted the development of specialized rhizosphere communities.</p>



<p>With their contribution, STRBs achieved an impressive 98% reduction in sludge volume. The optimal performance for this was observed at a sludge loading rate of 100 kg/m<sup>2</sup>/year.</p>



<p>"These findings highlight the transformative potential of STRBs in sustainable wastewater management. By leveraging natural processes, STRBs offer an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods," noted Daniel Menezes Blackburn, the study's lead researcher.</p>



<p>"By harnessing natural processes, STRBs provide an effective, eco-friendly alternative to conventional methods, offering valuable insights for real-world applications."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionizing-wastewater-management">Revolutionizing wastewater management</h2>



<p>As it stands, reed beds have proven to be a viable solution for sustainable sludge management. Through minimizing chemical and energy use, these systems contribute to climate resilience and environmental conservation.</p>



<p>The next stage of research will explore diversifying plant species, optimizing sludge load capacities, and assessing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a>.</p>



<p>The breakthrough findings of this study highlight the potential of reed beds to revolutionize wastewater management.</p>



<p>By marrying ecological integrity with practical wastewater treatment solutions, STRBs are paving the way to global sustainability targets.</p>

<p>A new report has revealed that 2024 was yet another year of record-breaking temperatures, which are driving the global water cycle to unprecedented climate extremes and are contributing to massive floods and crippling droughts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the experts, this intense warming is pushing worldwide water systems to their limits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transformations-in-the-global-water-cycle">Transformations in the global water cycle</h2>



<p>According to the 2024 Global Water Monitor Report, an international collaboration led by <a href="http://anu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ANU</a> Professor Albert van Dijk, rising temperatures are significantly changing the way water moves around the planet, “wreaking havoc” on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water cycle</a>. </p>



<p>With the planet growing steadily hotter, water evaporates more quickly, amplifying severe events like storms and droughts.</p>



<p>“Rising sea surface temperatures intensified tropical cyclones and droughts in the Amazon Basin and southern Africa. Global warming also contributed to heavier downpours and slower-moving storms, as evidenced by deadly flash floods in Europe, Asia and Brazil,” reported van Dijk.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report notes that, in 2024, about four billion people across 111 countries experienced their hottest year to date, and that air temperatures over land have climbed 1.2 degrees Celsius since the start of the 21st century, roughly 2.2 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-water-related-disasters">Harsh water-related disasters</h2>



<p>“In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, for the fourth year in a row. Water systems across the globe bore the brunt,” van Dijk said.</p>



<p>He emphasized that 2024 was a year of extremes but was not an isolated occurrence. “It is part of a worsening trend of more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">floods</a>, prolonged droughts, and record-breaking extremes.”</p>



<p>Major water-driven calamities - flash floods, river floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and landslides - resulted in more than 8,700 deaths and displaced 40 million people worldwide, incurring economic losses exceeding US $550 billion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“From historic droughts to catastrophic floods, these extreme events impact lives, livelihoods, and entire ecosystems. Separate, heavy rainfall events caused widespread flash flooding in Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing more than 1,000 people,” van Dijk said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Catastrophic flooding in Brazil caused more than 80 deaths, with the region recording more than 300 millimetres of rainfall.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intensified-rainfall-extremes-and-flash-floods">Intensified rainfall extremes and flash floods</h2>



<p>One of the report’s key findings is the increased frequency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme rainfall</a>. </p>



<p>“We found rainfall records are being broken with increasing regularity,” said van Dijk.</p>



<p>“For example, record-high monthly rainfall totals were achieved 27 percent more frequently in 2024 than at the start of this century, whereas daily rainfall records were achieved 52 percent more frequently. Record-lows were 38 percent more frequent, so we are seeing worse extremes on both sides.”</p>



<p>Van Dijk noted that in southern China, the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers flooded cities and towns, displacing tens of thousands of people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in crop damages. In August, heavy monsoon rains and dam releases in Bangladesh caused widespread river flooding.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“More than 5.8 million people were affected and at least one million tons of rice was destroyed. In Spain, more than 500 millimetres of rain fell within eight hours in late October, causing deadly flash floods,” said van Dijk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-droughts-a-parallel-threat">Droughts: A parallel threat</h2>



<p>While many regions contended with floods, others faced punishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-now-the-driving-force-behind-droughts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a>. </p>



<p>“In the Amazon Basin, one of the Earth’s most important ecosystems, record low river levels cut off transport routes and disrupted hydropower generation.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Wildfires driven by the hot and dry weather burned through more than 52,000 square kilometres in September alone, releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases,” van Dijk added.</p>



<p>“In southern Africa, a severe drought reduced maize production by more than 50 percent, leaving 30 million people facing food shortages. Farmers were forced to cull livestock as pastures dried up. The drought also reduced hydropower output, leading to widespread blackouts.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-more-extreme-events">Preparing for more extreme events</h2>



<p>Van Dijk warned of the growing necessity to prepare for more intense extremes.&nbsp;</p>

Rising temperatures are ‘wreaking havoc’ on the global water cycle

A new report has revealed that 2024 was yet another...

<p>The skies above America's heartland have been getting increasingly volatile. Massive thunderstorms and extreme summer rainfalls have been dumping unprecedented amounts of rain across the central and eastern United States.</p>



<p>Backed by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), recent research sheds light on the link between prolonged thunderstorms and these intense downpours. The study offers critical insights into one of the most dangerous weather phenomena: flooding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-patterns-of-extreme-summer-rainfall">Patterns of extreme summer rainfall</h2>



<p>A team led by meteorologist Jason Chiappa analyzed high-resolution rain data that spanned 21 years, from 2003 to 2023.</p>



<p>The researchers identified instances where the rainfall within 12 hours exceeded the 10-year average for the area. The scientists termed these occurrences "extreme events." </p>



<p>The analysis revealed a clear pattern: thunderstorms that linger for hours over the same region tend to produce extreme rainfall events that are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasting-the-floods-new-clues-about-extreme-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">responsible for many floods</a>.</p>



<p>“This research will help improve daily and seasonal forecasts to help us understand health and safety concerns related to one of the deadliest consequences from extreme rainfall events - flooding,” said Chungu Lu, an <a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF</a> program manager who supported the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-of-long-term-rainfall-patterns">Complexity of long-term rainfall patterns </h2>



<p>Chiappa’s analysis showed that while extreme rainfall events have generally increased over the years, they also exhibit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">annual variations</a>.</p>



<p>"It is important for us to identify changes in the nature and frequency of these events and explore why some years have so many more extreme events than others," Chiappa explained. This variability adds complexity to understanding long-term patterns and preparing for future risks.</p>



<p>Thunderstorms at the heart of these extreme rainfalls don’t follow a simple playbook. These storms often unleash their fury at night, a time when weather models struggle to predict them accurately. Convective rainfall, marked by its sudden and localized nature, poses a particular challenge. </p>



<p>Current global weather and climate models lack the resolution and timing precision to capture reliably such small-scale but high-impact events.</p>

<p>Nighttime thunderstorms are a meteorological puzzle. Weather models, which excel during the day, falter when predicting nocturnal convective storms. </p>

<p>From climate change to soil degradation, agriculture faces mounting challenges. A new study published in the journal <em>Agriculture, Ecosystems &amp; Environment</em>&nbsp;shines a spotlight on a promising solution: using cover crops as “living mulch.”</p>



<p>The research, led by scientists from the Institute of Applied Ecology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenyang, reveals how intercropping maize with cover crops can rejuvenate soil health and nutrient cycling.</p>



<p>Dr. Li Zhang and her team conducted a remarkable experiment in Changtu County, northeastern China. The researchers examined how legumes, grasses, and mixtures of both as cover crops influenced soil properties, microbial communities, and nutrient availability.</p>



<p>The findings could reshape sustainable farming practices globally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-cover-crops">What are cover crops?</h2>



<p>Cover crops are plants grown alongside or after the main crop to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-soil-day-2024-protecting-our-planets-lifeline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enhance soil health</a>. Unlike traditional practices where soil is left bare post-harvest, cover crops prevent erosion, enrich soil fertility, and promote the recycling of plant nutrients. </p>



<p>“Soil degradation, caused by unsustainable farming practices, threatens food security. Cover crops offer a way to restore degraded farmland without compromising productivity,” Dr. Zhang explained.</p>



<p>The concept of “living mulch” involves growing cover crops between rows of maize throughout the crop’s lifecycle. This approach differs from relying solely on decomposing residues, and represents a proactive method to tackle soil degradation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-potential-of-cover-crops">Testing the potential of cover crops</h2>



<p>The researchers implemented a field study with three treatments.</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Legume cover crops</strong>: These crops are known for their nitrogen-fixing ability, legumes add valuable nutrients to the soil.</li>



<li><strong>Grass cover crops</strong>: Grasses contribute to carbon retention and enhance soil structure.</li>

<p>Each type of cover crop offered unique advantages:</p>



<p>Legumes increased dissolved organic carbon and available nitrogen in the soil. These changes altered microbial community dynamics, reducing microbial carbon limitations and boosting carbon cycling. Microbes could access essential nutrients more efficiently, thus enhancing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-soil-esoil-boosts-crop-production-by-50-in-just-15-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overall soil health</a>.</p>



<p>Grasses maintained soil carbon and nitrogen levels while promoting microbial biomass growth. They also supported bacterial diversity, an essential factor for robust nutrient cycling.</p>



<p>Mixed crops of legumes and grasses were the most effective treatment. The combination improved carbon and nitrogen levels, balanced soil nutrients, and amplified microbial functions. Temporal shifts in microbial activity highlighted the dynamic benefits of this approach.</p>



<p>“The mixed cover crop system demonstrated remarkable potential to enhance microbial activity and maintain soil nutrient balance. This makes it an ideal solution for maize intercropping,” noted Dr. Zhang.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-soil-degradation">Addressing soil degradation</h2>



<p>Soil degradation is a pressing issue, especially in black <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-soils-release-more-carbon-than-plants-can-replace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a> regions like northeastern China. These areas, crucial for food production, face declining fertility and erosion. The innovative use of cover crops as living mulch offers a scalable, sustainable solution.</p>



<p>By improving soil organic matter, balancing nutrients, and promoting microbial diversity, these plants reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.</p>



<p>This not only benefits the environment but also supports farmers by lowering input costs and enhancing long-term productivity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-global-agriculture">Implications for global agriculture</h2>



<p>The insights from the <a href="https://english.cas.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a> are relevant well beyond the borders of northeastern China.</p>

Mixed cover crops may be the future of sustainable farming

From climate change to soil degradation, agriculture faces mounting challenges....

<p>The mysteries beyond our earthly world have always captivated and fascinated us, particularly those of the moon. Outer space, the moon, planets, and stars have ignited our curiosity and filled us with wonder for centuries.</p>



<p>Our quest to understand our cosmic environment has evolved to include studying the invisible forces that shield our planet. One such force is the magnetic field that protects Earth from incident solar radiation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lexi-and-the-artemis-era">LEXI and the Artemis era</h2>



<p>With NASA's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grow-plants-on-moon-by-2026-nasa-artemis-iii-mission/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Artemis</a> program, a new chapter in space exploration is about to begin.</p>



<p>Setting foot in this new era is LEXI (Lunar Environment Heliospheric X-ray Imager), an instrument delivered as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative to the moon.</p>



<p>LEXI will capture the first global images of Earth's magnetic field. </p>



<p>The journey kickstarts at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Lander hosting LEXI.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lunar-landing-with-an-earthly-objective">Lunar landing with an earthly objective</h2>



<p>Upon successful landing, LEXI will jolt into action, focusing its gaze back towards Earth. </p>



<p>During an intense, six-day session, this innovative device will record images of X-rays originating from the boundaries of our planet's extensive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-solar-shockwave-has-cracked-earths-magnetosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetosphere</a>.</p>



<p>This visualization will provide insights into how the magnetosphere responds to space weather and cosmic forces. </p>



<p>The images will also reveal the susceptibility of our planet’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-dances-with-solar-wind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic shield</a> to streams of charged solar particles that can create auroras and potentially damage our infrastructure.</p>



<p>“We’re trying to get this big picture of Earth’s space environment. A lot of physics can be esoteric or difficult to follow without years of specific training, but this will be science that you can see,” explained Brian Walsh, a space physicist at <a href="https://www.bu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boston University</a> and the principal investigator of LEXI. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lexi-s-view-of-the-magnetosphere">LEXI's view of the magnetosphere </h2>



<p>Streams of particles from the Sun known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-solar-wind-which-creates-beautiful-auroras-on-earth-is-now-less-mysterious/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar winds</a> create low-energy X-rays when they collide with Earth's magnetic field - a force field known as the magnetosphere.</p>



<p>Previously, these X-rays were only detectable through a patchwork of observations from various satellites and instruments. </p>



<p>But LEXI, stationed on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-earth-get-its-moon-a-new-theory-has-emerged/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Moon</a>, will have an unobstructed view of the entire magnetopause, which is the outer edge of Earth's magnetic field.</p>



<p>Here on Earth, the team will track how the magnetosphere expands, contracts, and changes its shape in response to the solar wind's strength.</p>



<p>“We expect to see the magnetosphere breathing out and breathing in for the first time," noted Hyunju Connor, an astrophysicist and the NASA lead scientist for LEXI.</p>



<p>"When the solar wind is very strong, the magnetosphere will shrink and push backward toward Earth, and then expand when the solar wind weakens." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-journey-years-in-the-making">A journey years in the making</h2>



<p>LEXI's journey began a decade ago, with a Goddard-based team testing the technology needed to detect low-energy X-rays across a broad field of view.</p>



<p>The instrument was then known as STORM. It was launched into space on a sounding rocket in 2012, and collected images before returning to Earth.</p>



<p>The imager was displayed at Goddard, and sat there until a call for CLPS projects came. Walsh saw an opportunity for the instrument to contribute from the lunar surface.</p>



<p>“We’d break the glass - not literally - but remove it, restore it, and refurbish it, and that would allow us to look back and get this global picture that we’ve never had before,” Walsh explained.</p>



<p>With some minor refurbishments, STORM was reinvented as LEXI and is now prepared to revisit space. </p>



<p>“There’s a lot of really rich science we can get from this,” said Walsh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncovering-mysteries-of-the-universe">Uncovering mysteries of the universe</h2>



<p>NASA's CLPS model permits commercial delivery services to the moon, thus promoting the growth of the industry while supporting long-term lunar exploration.</p>



<p>As a primary customer for CLPS deliveries, NASA seeks to share flights with other future customers. </p>



<p>NASA Goddard is a principal science collaborator on LEXI, while NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center manages the development of seven of the 10 CLPS payloads on Firefly’s Blue Ghost lunar lander, including LEXI.</p>



<p>Our fascination with the cosmos will continue to drive us to uncover the mysteries of the universe.</p>



<p>And with endeavors like NASA's Artemis campaign and instruments like LEXI, we inch closer to understanding the nature of the forces that protect us every day.</p>

LEXI will watch Earth’s magnetosphere 'breathing' from the moon

<p>Plant leaves may seem unassuming, but beneath their glossy surfaces lies a surprising discovery: they are coated with a diverse array of RNA (ribonucleic acid) molecules. </p>



<p>This finding has the potential to reshape our understanding of plant biology and the interactions between plants and the environment.</p>



<p>The study was led by Lucía Borniego and Meenu Singla-Rastogi, postdoctoral fellows at Indiana University Bloomington, alongside Roger Innes, a professor of biology. </p>



<p>The research offers a fresh perspective on the complex relationships between plants and microbes.</p>



<p>“What excites us most about this discovery is that it indicates plants may control their microbiomes, in part, by regulating gene expression in microbes using cross-kingdom RNA interference, also known as RNAi,” said Innes. </p>



<p>But what does this mean, and why is it significant?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-discovery-plant-rnas-on-leaf-surfaces">Revolutionary discovery: Plant RNAs on leaf surfaces</h2>



<p>RNA, a fragile molecule, typically degrades quickly outside a cell unless protected. However, this study reveals that plants secrete viable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-recovered-from-an-extinct-species-tasmanian-tiger-for-first-time-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RNA</a> onto their leaf surfaces, where it remains surprisingly stable. </p>



<p>This discovery suggests that plant-derived RNA could directly influence microbial communities on leaf surfaces by engaging in cross-kingdom RNAi - a process whereby RNA from one organism affects gene expression in another.</p>



<p>Cross-kingdom RNAi is not new in biology. Scientists have known that organisms can exchange RNA to regulate genes. What’s remarkable here is the idea that plants may use this mechanism to interact with microbes that are colonizing their surfaces.</p>



<p>“Only recently has it been shown that RNAs produced by one organism can be taken up by another organism and then base pair with RNAs in the recipient organism,” Innes explained. RNA interference appears to occur in just about all living organisms. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-rna-and-polysaccharides-in-plants">Role of RNA and polysaccharides in plants</h2>



<p>The research team found abundant RNAs on the leaf surfaces of&nbsp;<em>Arabidopsis thaliana</em>, a model plant widely used in scientific studies. </p>



<p>These RNAs were stable, likely because they formed condensates with polysaccharides, such as pectin. </p>



<p>As a component of the plant cell wall, pectin appears to play a protective role, ensuring that RNA molecules can persist outside plant cells.</p>



<p>The implications are profound. Stable RNA on leaf surfaces means that microbes colonizing these areas are exposed to plant RNA. This exposure could influence microbial gene expression, potentially determining which microbial species can thrive on leaf surfaces.</p>



<p>This ability to “curate” microbial communities could impact plant health, disease resistance, and overall growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-this-matter-the-bigger-picture">Why does this matter? The bigger picture</h2>



<p>The implications of this research extend far beyond plants. </p>



<p>“The manipulation of microbial communities by environmental RNA is likely taking place in our own guts as well, with RNA being secreted by our intestinal epithelial cells,” noted Innes.</p>

<p>Ever wondered if the flavor of your coffee could taste even better? A simple dash of water might hold the secret to a richer, smoother cup. </p>



<p>New research reveals that adding moisture to coffee beans before grinding can significantly improve brewing flavor while preventing the mess and waste often caused by static electricity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coffee-flavor-and-electrons">Coffee flavor and electrons</h2>



<p>Grinding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-coffee-reduces-the-risk-of-certain-cancers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coffee</a> beans produces friction as the particles collide, rub together, and break apart. This process causes the ground coffee to develop a charge, which then produces static electricity.</p>



<p>The charged coffee particles stick together, forming clumps that can clog grinders. These clumps make it difficult to achieve a consistent grind, leading to uneven brewing and less flavorful coffee.</p>



<p>Scientists have investigated the impact of this static buildup on the brewing process. Their research revealed a simple yet effective solution: adding water to the beans before grinding. </p>



<p>This moisture reduces static electricity, prevents clumping, and ensures smoother grinding, which ultimately improves the quality and flavor of the brewed coffee.</p>



<p>"Moisture, whether it's residual moisture inside the roasted coffee or external moisture added during grinding, is what dictates the amount of charge that is formed during grinding," explained Christopher Hendon, a materials chemist at the <a href="https://www.uoregon.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oregon</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-static-electricity-the-basics">Understanding static electricity -- the basics</h2>



<p>Static electricity is what happens when there's an imbalance of tiny electric charges on the surface of an object. </p>



<p>Everything around us is made up of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/x-ray-single-atom-captured-by-scientists-for-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiny particles called atoms</a>, and inside these atoms, there are even smaller particles called electrons. Electrons carry a negative charge, and they can move from one object to another.</p>



<p>For example, when you rub a balloon on your hair, some electrons from your hair move to the balloon, making the balloon negatively charged and your hair positively charged. This is why the balloon can stick to your hair or make your hair stand up - opposite charges attract!</p>



<p>We experience <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mystery-of-static-electricity-has-finally-been-solved/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">static electricity</a> a lot in everyday life. You might have felt it when you touch a metal doorknob and get a little shock, or when your clothes stick together after they come out of the dryer.</p>



<p>These shocks happen when the extra charges suddenly move from one thing to another, often through your body, which feels like a quick zap. </p>



<p>Static electricity is more common in dry air because moisture in the air helps stop the buildup of charges. That’s why it tends to happen more in the winter when the air is dry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-of-better-coffee-brewing">Science of better coffee brewing</h2>



<p>Hendon and Joshua Méndez Harper, a former volcanologist from the University of Oregon, investigated how moisture affects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-coffee-is-missing-these-five-brain-boosting-spices/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coffee</a> grinding. </p>



<p>The researchers examined coffee beans from various origins, with different roasting levels and moisture contents. </p>



<p>They measured key factors such as the static electricity generated during grinding, the size of the resulting particles, and the flavor profiles of the brewed coffee.</p>



<p>The study revealed that darker, drier coffee roasts are more susceptible to static electricity than lighter, moister beans. </p>



<p>The increased brittleness of darker roasts leads to greater friction during grinding, which causes clumping and uneven grounds.</p>



<p>By adding a small amount of water to the beans before grinding, the researchers showed that static electricity could be reduced. </p>



<p>This simple adjustment produced a smoother grind and improved consistency, enhancing the quality of the coffee.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stronger-espresso-with-water">Stronger espresso with water</h2>



<p>Harper and his team compared espresso brewed with beans ground with and without added moisture. </p>



<p>They discovered that a light spritz of water not only reduced clumping but also improved the extraction process. The moist grounds allowed water to flow more evenly, and pulled more flavor from the coffee.</p>



<p>Hendon recommends adding about 20 microliters of water per gram of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robusta-coffee-could-save-our-morning-brew-from-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coffee</a>, which equals roughly half a milliliter for a single shot of espresso. </p>



<p>This minor adjustment not only enhances the uniformity of the grind but also ensures a stronger and tastier cup of coffee, making it a simple yet effective technique for coffee enthusiasts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-geophysics">Lessons from geophysics</h2>



<p>The research also connects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healthy-aging-drinking-coffee-can-add-years-to-your-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coffee</a> science with earth science. </p>



<p>"There's a lot more to know about how coffee breaks, how it flows as particles, and how it interacts with water," said Harper. </p>



<p>By studying coffee, scientists hope to gain insights into broader geophysical phenomena like landslides, volcanic eruptions, and soil water flow.</p>

<p>"A few simple squirts of water have solved the problems of clumping, channeling, and poor extractions while aiding in the pursuit of attaining the tastiest espresso," Hendon states.</p>

<p>The drink in your hand might carry more risks than you realize. Last Friday, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy dropped a bombshell that's shaking up happy hours across America. Alcohol, that social lubricant we've embraced for millennia, needs a stark new warning label about its links to cancer.</p>



<p>Despite mounting evidence, fewer than half of Americans are aware of this risk. Murthy’s call for labeling alcohol bottles with cancer warnings aims to bridge this knowledge gap and save lives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-stark-warning-backed-by-evidence">A stark warning backed by evidence</h2>



<p>"Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for about 100,000 cases and 20,000 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-related-deaths-have-doubled-over-the-past-two-decades/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deaths</a> annually in the United States," stated Dr. Murthy.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/leadership/vivek-murthy.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Surgeon General</a>’s advisory highlights that alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing at least seven types of cancer, including cancers of the breast, liver, and throat. </p>



<p>This risk is not limited to heavy drinking; even moderate alcohol intake can raise the likelihood of developing these cancers. Essentially, the more alcohol a person consumes, the greater their risk of cancer becomes.</p>



<p>This finding is particularly significant as the U.S. is in the process of revising its dietary guidelines, which currently recommend that women consume no more than one drink per day and men no more than two. However, these guidelines may not fully reflect the evidence that links even small amounts of alcohol to increased cancer risk.</p>



<p>This raises questions about whether the current recommendations provide sufficient protection against alcohol-related cancers and suggests a need for updated guidance or heightened public awareness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cancer-warning-labels-for-alcohol-bottles">Cancer warning labels for alcohol bottles</h2>



<p>Murthy's advisory calls for adding cancer risk warnings to labels on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spike-in-alcohol-use-during-the-pandemic-continues-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol</a> bottles, building on existing warnings about drinking during pregnancy and impaired driving. Public health experts argue this step is long overdue.</p>



<p>"It’s pretty crazy that there’s a lot more information on a can of peas than on a bottle of whiskey," said Dr. Timothy Naimi from the <a href="https://www.uvic.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Victoria</a>. He emphasized consumers’ right to know the health risks associated with alcohol.</p>



<p>Adding such warnings faces significant opposition from the alcohol industry, which invests heavily in lobbying against regulatory changes. The last update to alcohol warning labels was in 1989, and focused on pregnancy risks and drunk driving.</p>



<p>A similar push for cigarette warnings helped decrease smoking rates, which offers hope that alcohol warnings could yield comparable results.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-and-individual-choices">Public health and individual choices</h2>



<p>Murthy encourages individuals to weigh their alcohol consumption carefully. "Cancer risk increases as you drink more alcohol," he wrote, reminding people that "less is better" when it comes to minimizing cancer risks.</p>



<p>The Surgeon General’s advisory emphasizes that addressing the link between alcohol and cancer goes beyond adding warning labels to alcoholic beverages. </p>



<p>It calls on public health professionals to take an active role in educating communities about how alcohol contributes to cancer risk. Raising awareness at the community level can help people make informed decisions about their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-alcohol-in-moderation-does-not-prolong-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol consumption</a>.</p>



<p>Additionally, the advisory encourages healthcare providers to address this issue directly in clinical settings. </p>

<p>A renewed rivalry between the United States and China in space exploration has placed special focus on Lagrange points, which are becoming crucial locations for asserting influence beyond Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These regions, named for the astronomer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph-Louis_Lagrange" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Joseph-Louis Lagrange</a>, lie in interplanetary space where the gravitational pull of two celestial bodies (like Earth and the Sun) balances the centripetal force that keeps smaller objects in stable orbits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lagrange-points-and-the-space-race">Lagrange points and the space race</h2>



<p>In the Sun and Earth-Moon system, five Lagrange points (labeled L1 through L5) emerge from these gravitational interactions. </p>



<p>Two of them, L4 and L5, sit 60 degrees ahead and behind Earth (plus the Moon) in its orbit around the Sun. </p>



<p>Their stability makes them appealing sites for satellites and telescopes, as spacecraft can remain at these spots for extended periods without large fuel expenditures. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-advantages-of-l2">Key advantages of L2</h2>



<p>From the Sun’s perspective, L2 is located 1.5 million kilometers (932,000 miles) behind Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Its orbit around the Sun mirrors Earth’s speed, yet it is about four times farther from our planet than the Moon’s farthest distance. </p>



<p>This location offers a clear view of deep space, which is why telescopes like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/firefly-sparkle-webb-telescope-weighs-a-galaxy-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb</a> have been placed there.</p>



<p>China, for instance, has stationed the Queqiao relay satellite at L2 in the Earth-Moon system to maintain communication with the Chang’e 4 lunar probe - the first to land on the Moon’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/china-has-launched-a-spacecraft-to-the-far-side-of-the-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">far side</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The United States has similar aspirations for L2, including missions such as the Gateway lunar outpost planned for the late 2020s.</p>



<p>“L2 is specifically important because of its visibility to the far side of the Moon,” noted space systems engineer Laura Duffy. “We cannot see that from the Earth, and China is headed there.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-tensions-between-the-u-s-and-china">Growing tensions between the U.S. and China</h2>



<p>A recent bipartisan committee <a href="https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/reset-prevent-build-scc-report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> from the House of Representatives details the expanding economic and technological competition between the two nations. </p>



<p>Investigating the rivalry since China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001, the report proposes a set of nearly 150 policy recommendations designed to “fundamentally reset” relations.</p>



<p>“NASA and relevant Department of Defense funding is critical to ensure command and control in the space domain, establish dominance in multilateral space governance, and spur scientific discovery and American innovation,” the report states.</p>



<p>One notable suggestion advises Congress to “fund NASA’s and the Department of Defense’s programs that are critical to countering the CCP’s [Chinese Communist Party] malign ambitions in space, including by ensuring the United States is the first country to permanently station assets at all Lagrange Points.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-progress-in-china-s-space-program">Progress in China’s space program</h2>



<p>China has recently made great strides in its space program, showcased by efforts such as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-moon-had-active-volcanoes-just-120-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chang’e 5</a> lunar sample return mission and the upcoming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/china-has-launched-a-spacecraft-to-the-far-side-of-the-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chang’e 6 expedition</a> to the Moon’s south pole. </p>



<p>The Tiangong space station has become operational, and the country aims to send taikonauts to the Moon in the near future.</p>



<p>“The CCP understands well the need for space-based operations and is developing formidable space capabilities to challenge US dominance in this domain,” the committee report says.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-space-race-continues">The space race continues</h2>



<p>Both the United States and China are accelerating deep-space capabilities, with the Earth-Moon system Lagrange points potentially serving as gateways to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-captured-in-true-color-like-youve-never-seen-the-red-planet-before/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a> and beyond.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Other nations and agencies have also shown interest in these strategic locations. While the US-China rivalry fuels competition, international collaboration - as seen through ventures like the International Space Station - continues to advance scientific knowledge of the cosmos.</p>



<p>As Lagrange points become central to this new space race, it remains to be seen how their control might shape humanity’s push deeper into space.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although concerns about competition persist, the pursuit of these points may drive innovation and further exploration in ways that transform our understanding of - and presence in - the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interstellar-tunnel-found-that-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar system</a>.</p>

<p>The Hades’ snake moray, scientifically known as <em>Uropterygius hades</em>, is a slim, dark brown, serpent-like eel that is widely recognized for its distinctive lifestyle.</p>



<p>This one-of-a-kind creature is distributed across the Central Indo-Pacific region in southern Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, southern Java, and Fiji.</p>



<p>The dark, formidable hue of this eel and its unique <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-lack-critical-fish-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat</a>, combined with its unusual burrowing behavior and extreme light sensitivity, have earned it the name of the underworld god, Hades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-species-in-an-unlikely-environment">New species in an unlikely environment</h2>



<p>This new species was brought to light by a team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.nsysu.edu.tw/?Lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Sun Yat-sen University</a> in Taiwan, Western Philippines University, and the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History in Japan.</p>



<p>The researchers were inspired by Ralph Fiennes' portrayal of Hades in the movie <em>Clash of the Titans</em>, which is how the Hades' snake moray eel got its name. </p>



<p>There are currently about 230 recognized species of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-eels-have-a-secret-weapon-to-generate-electricity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moray eels</a>, with the majority inhabiting marine environments.</p>



<p>Only one has been confirmed to exist predominantly in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-steadily-increasing-in-freshwater-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">freshwater</a> and some, like the slender giant moray, occasionally venture into low-salinity habitats such as river mouths.</p>



<p>Moray eels that are specifically adapted to live in estuarine habitats are exceedingly rare.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unexpected-encounter">An unexpected encounter</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the discovery of the Hades’ snake moray was made by accident.</p>



<p>Researchers from National Sun Yat-sen University were conducting a survey of the bean-eyed snake moray, a creature known for its highly reduced eye size, within the caves of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.</p>



<p>The goal was to use this eel as a case study to understand the evolutionary processes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-eels-have-a-secret-weapon-to-generate-electricity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eel adaptation</a> to cave environments.</p>



<p>But, the team had a surprise in store. Instead of the bean-eyed eel, the researchers stumbled upon a slender, uniformly deep, dark-colored eel that turned out to be the Hades' snake moray.</p>

<p>So, what makes this eel so special? Its lifestyle and habits are intriguing, to say the least. </p>



<p>In an aquatic tank, this eel exhibits tail-first <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-new-species-of-burrowing-scorpions-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">burrowing</a> behavior, which is a rare trait among morays. It is unusually sensitive to light, and constantly seeks refuge from brightness.</p>



<p>Its small eyes, likely adapted to low-light environments, along with reduced sensory pores in the head - presumably to prevent clogging by substrate - indicate that this species may excel at burrowing.</p>



<p>The discovery of the Hades' snake moray eel pushes the boundaries of our knowledge of aquatic life. It serves as a reminder of the fascinating biodiversity that lies around every corner of our planet, waiting for curious minds to uncover.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecological-role-and-conservation">Ecological role and conservation </h2>



<p>Despite its elusive nature, the Hades' snake moray eel plays an important role in its estuarine ecosystem. </p>

<p>A study led by scientists at <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Manchester</a> and the University of Leeds has shed new light on ocean carbon storage.</p>

<p>The researchers dedicated several years to this project, creating a comprehensive model that takes into account a broader range of carbon preservation processes than ever before. </p>



<p>These processes include burial in sediments, hydrolysis (the breakdown of carbon in water), sorption, and molecular transformation.</p>

<p>According to the team's calculations, the carbon preservation efficiency of the ocean is nearly three times higher than estimates from previous models.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
