<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

A recent study, led by a team of Canadian forest management specialists, has highlighted fuel aridity as the dominant factor influencing burn severity in Canada’s wildfires over the past several decades.</p>



<p>Published in the journal <em>Science</em>, the research combines 40 years of wildfire data with advanced modeling techniques to shed light on the drivers behind Canada’s escalating wildfire crisis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-severity-of-wildfires">Increasing severity of wildfires</h2>



<p>Wildfires are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-activity-surged-during-ice-age-climate-shifts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">uncontrolled fires</a> that burn in forests, grasslands, or wildland areas. They often start due to lightning strikes, human negligence, or arson, and spread rapidly when fueled by dry vegetation, high temperatures, and strong winds.</p>



<p>While they play a natural role in ecosystems, helping to clear dead plants and promote new growth, wildfires have become more severe in recent times due to climate change and poor land management.</p>



<p>These fires cause widespread destruction, threatening wildlife, homes, and infrastructure, while also releasing significant carbon emissions that worsen global warming.</p>



<p>Effective wildfire management involves prevention, firefighting, and sustainable practices to reduce their frequency and intensity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fuel-aridity-s-role-in-wildfires">Fuel aridity's role in wildfires</h2>



<p>The researchers set out to investigate why <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/brazils-devastating-2024-fire-season-rages-on/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> in Canada have become more intense and widespread.</p>



<p>To do this, they collected detailed records of wildfire occurrences over the past 40 years. This dataset included information about when, where, and how wildfires occurred, along with environmental conditions at the time, like temperature and vegetation dryness.</p>



<p>The experts analyzed the data using a multinomial logistic regression model. This is a statistical tool that helps identify patterns and relationships.</p>



<p>The researchers examined how different factors - like vegetation dryness, weather, and geography - contributed to the severity of wildfires. The model can handle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-fire-risk-has-grown-exponentially-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex situations</a> where multiple factors interact, thus helping to identify which are most important.</p>



<p>The study reached a critical finding: the dryness of vegetation, known as fuel aridity, plays the most significant role in how severe a wildfire becomes. </p>



<p>In simpler terms, drier trees and plants burn more intensely, making wildfires more destructive. This insight highlights the importance of managing vegetation, especially as climate change makes conditions drier in many areas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seasonal-and-regional-variations">Seasonal and regional variations</h2>



<p>The study revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/intense-forest-fires-leave-scorched-earth-heating-the-planet-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> are not the same across seasons and regions in Canada. Wildfires during the summer were found to be the most severe. </p>



<p>This is likely due to drier conditions caused by rising temperatures and reduced rainfall over the past two decades. These arid conditions make vegetation highly flammable, which leads to more intense fires.</p>



<p>However, the researchers observed that the factors influencing wildfires, such as fuel aridity and weather conditions, varied depending on the specific geography of the region. </p>



<p>For example, some areas might experience more severe fires due to extreme dryness, while others might be affected by wind patterns or local vegetation types.</p>



<p>This variation shows that wildfire behavior is complex and depends on a combination of local environmental factors - making it essential to develop wildfire management strategies based on each region's unique conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-context-and-global-implications">Broader context and global implications</h2>



<p>Jianbang Gan, a researcher from <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M University</a>, provided additional relevance to the study by placing its findings in a global context. In a companion article, Gan highlighted how wildfire drivers vary significantly across different parts of the world.</p>



<p>For example, in the United States, strong winds often spread wildfires by carrying embers far ahead of the flames, thus igniting new areas. In places like Russia and Australia, massive forest losses play a key role in shaping wildfire behavior.</p>



<p>Gan stressed the importance of understanding these regional differences to create effective wildfire management strategies. Since the causes and conditions of wildfires differ from one region to another, a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. </p>



<p>Instead, strategies must be designed to address the specific factors driving wildfires in each area, such as fuel aridity, wind patterns, or vegetation types. This localized approach is essential to mitigate wildfire risks and their devastating impacts effectively .</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-climate-change">Role of climate change</h2>



<p>As the planet gets warmer due to climate change, the factors that make wildfires worse are becoming more intense. Rising temperatures dry out vegetation, turning trees, shrubs, and grass into highly flammable fuel. </p>



<p>Stronger winds, another effect of changing weather patterns, spread fires more quickly and unpredictably. These conditions combine to create wildfires that are larger, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-wildfires-are-gaining-even-more-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">move faster</a>, and are harder to control.</p>



<p>The damage caused by wildfires extends far beyond burned forests and destroyed homes and infrastructure.</p>



<p>When vegetation burns, it releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. This adds to the buildup of greenhouse gases and further accelerates global warming.</p>



<p>In this way, wildfires create a dangerous cycle: climate change makes wildfires worse, and the wildfires, in turn, contribute to climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-fuel-aridity-to-control-wildfires">Addressing fuel aridity to control wildfires</h2>



<p>The study highlights the urgent need to address fuel aridity through sustainable forest management and climate mitigation efforts.</p>

<p>Every atom of carbon in your body has an incredible story to tell. Before becoming part of you, the carbon atom likely spent time not just in other living things, but also floating in the vast spaces between stars.</p>



<p>And now, scientists have discovered something remarkable about this cosmic journey - these carbon atoms don't just drift aimlessly through space. They're part of a massive galactic recycling system that keeps our universe's star-forming factories running.</p>



<p>The remarkable research comes from a team led by Samantha Garza, a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington. </p>



<p>The findings shed new light on how galaxies, like our Milky Way, maintain their ability to form new stars through a complex system of cosmic circulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-and-the-human-body-the-basics">Carbon and the human body -- the basics</h2>



<p>Carbon atoms are like the building blocks of life, making up a huge part of the human body. In fact, about 18% of your body weight comes from carbon. </p>



<p>Carbon forms the backbone of all organic molecules, which include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/did-the-building-blocks-of-life-replicate-on-their-own/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nucleic acids</a> like DNA. These molecules are essential for everything your body does, from carrying energy to building cells. </p>



<p>For example, glucose, a simple sugar made of carbon atoms, is one of the main sources of energy for your cells. Without carbon, none of these vital molecules would exist.</p>



<p>When you breathe in oxygen, your body uses it to break down carbon-based molecules in a process called metabolism. This process releases energy that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-metabolism-has-evolved-to-become-energetically-unique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">your body needs to function</a>. </p>



<p>At the same time, carbon atoms are also involved in the removal of waste through exhaling carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a byproduct of metabolism. Your body works hard to maintain a balance of carbon by taking it in through food and releasing it as waste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conveyor-belt-in-space-cycles-carbon">Conveyor belt in space cycles carbon </h2>



<p>Galaxies have their own version of the Earth's water cycle, but instead of water they cycle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-detect-molecules-that-store-carbon-in-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elements</a>, like carbon and oxygen, through the circumgalactic medium.</p>



<p>It's like a massive conveyor belt system that extends far beyond the visible edges of galaxies, pushing material out into space and then drawing it back in.</p>



<p>"Think of the circumgalactic medium as a giant train station," Garza said.</p>



<p>"It is constantly pushing material out and pulling it back in. The heavy elements that stars make get pushed out of their host galaxy and into the circumgalactic medium through their explosive supernovae deaths, where they can eventually get pulled back in and continue the cycle of star and planet formation," she explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-carbon-atoms-in-space">Detecting carbon atoms in space</h2>



<p>This discovery builds on a breakthrough from 2011 when scientists first confirmed that star-forming galaxies are surrounded by this circumgalactic medium. </p>



<p>Back then, the experts found hot, oxygen-rich gases in this region. Now, Garza's team has shown that cooler materials, particularly carbon, are also part of this cosmic recycling stream.</p>



<p>The scale of this system is mind-boggling. Using the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/observatory/design/cosmic-origins-spectrograph/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cosmic Origins Spectrograph</a> on the <a href="https://hubblesite.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble</a> Space Telescope, the team detected carbon extending nearly 400,000 light-years into space - that's four times the diameter of our entire galaxy. </p>



<p>The experts made these measurements by studying how light from distant quasars (incredibly bright cosmic objects) was affected by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-carbon-sinks-are-being-pushed-to-their-limits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon-rich material</a> in the circumgalactic medium of 11 different star-forming galaxies in space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-traveled-outside-of-our-galaxy">Carbon traveled outside of our galaxy</h2>



<p>"The same carbon in our bodies most likely spent a significant amount of time outside of the galaxy!" noted Jessica Werk, a professor and chair of the Department of Astronomy at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, who co-authored the study.</p>



<p>This recycling system might hold the key to understanding why some galaxies eventually stop forming new stars. </p>



<p>Think of it like a city's recycling program - if the collection and processing system breaks down, new products can't be made from the recycled materials. </p>



<p>Similarly, if a galaxy's circumgalactic medium stops cycling materials like carbon effectively, star formation in space could grind to a halt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-star-formation">Future of star formation</h2>



<p>"If you can keep the cycle going - pushing material out and pulling it back in - then theoretically you have enough fuel to keep star formation going," noted Garza.</p>



<p>But what happens when this cycle slows down or stops? That's one of the next big questions researchers hope to answer.</p>



<p>The study, published in the <em>Astrophysical Journal Letters</em>, opens up new avenues for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-space-station-observes-something-unknown-55-miles-above-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a> evolution. </p>



<p>The research team included scientists from institutions across the U.S. and Canada. The experts are now working to quantify other elements in the circumgalactic medium and compare how the composition of active star-forming galaxies differs from those that have mostly stopped making new stars in space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-vast-carbon-recycling-system">A vast carbon recycling system</h2>



<p>The research reminds us that we're part of something much bigger than ourselves. <p>Sleep affects every aspect of our lives, from physical health to emotional balance. A recent study led by Dr. Marcus Harrington at the University of East Anglia (UEA) sheds light on the link between sleep deprivation, unwanted memories, and mental health problems.</p>



<p>Published in the&nbsp;<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>&nbsp;(PNAS), the research reveals how sleep impacts our brain’s ability to control intrusive thoughts - a key factor in emotional well-being.</p>



<p>Dr. Harrington, a lecturer at UEA's School of Psychology, worked with researchers from York, Cambridge, Sussex, and Queen's University in Canada. </p>



<p>Using advanced neuroimaging, the team explored how deficits in brain function caused by sleep loss can impair memory control, and potentially trigger emotional distress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-sleep-shapes-memories">How sleep shapes memories </h2>

<p>Sleep plays a vital role in the brain’s daily rejuvenation, particularly in regions that govern memory and emotional regulation.</p>



<p>“Memories of unpleasant experiences can intrude into conscious awareness, often in response to reminders. For most people, these moments pass quickly. However, they become vivid and recurring for individuals with disorders like depression or PTSD,” <a href="https://research-portal.uea.ac.uk/en/persons/marcus-harrington" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Harrington</a> explains.</p>



<p>Intrusive memories disrupt emotional stability, and understanding their mechanisms is crucial. This research connects memory control failures to sleep loss, and offers insights into the complex relationship between sleep and mental health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-to-the-sleep-deprived-brain">What happens to the sleep-deprived brain?</h2>



<p>To uncover these links, the team conducted an experiment involving 85 healthy adults. Participants were divided into two groups: one spent a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-rhythms-help-strengthen-memories-during-sleep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">restful night</a> in a sleep lab, while the other stayed awake. </p>



<p>The next day, both groups performed memory suppression tasks while undergoing functional MRI scans. This process helped researchers identify which brain regions activated - or failed to activate - during attempts to suppress unwanted memories.</p>



<p>The results were striking. Participants who slept showed greater activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - a brain region that is crucial for controlling thoughts, actions, and emotions. Conversely, those deprived of sleep exhibited reduced activity in this area.</p>



<p>Sleep-deprived participants also demonstrated heightened activity in the hippocampus, the brain's memory retrieval hub, during memory suppression attempts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rem-sleep-a-key-to-emotional-resilience">REM sleep: A key to emotional resilience</h2>



<p>Among those who slept, the quality of sleep made a difference. Participants who spent more time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep showed better engagement of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during memory suppression. </p>

<p>For many, the recent anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was a time for reflection and remembrance.</p>



<p>The disaster took the lives of more than 220,000 people from different countries and is ranked as the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. </p>

<p>It was 20 years ago, on a seemingly ordinary day, that an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquake-activity-will-increase-due-to-glacial-retreat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earthquake</a> of unprecedented magnitude occurred off the western coastline of Indonesia's Sumatra island.</p>



<p>Standing as the longest faultline rupture from a quake ever recorded, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-fracking-linked-to-mysterious-gentle-tremors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic</a> event sent huge waves - some reaching heights of over 30 meters - sweeping across coastal regions in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other nations within the ocean basin.</p>



<p>Its energy release was enormous - the equivalent of 23,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. </p>



<p>The earthquake was first recorded as having a magnitude of 8.8. The United States Geological survey later revised the official magnitude of the earthquake to 9.1 with a depth of 30 kilometers.</p>



<p>The epicenter was located 150 miles from the Sumatran coast.</p>

<p>The tsunami's massive waves didn't stay contained within Indonesia. They spread across the Indian Ocean at incredible speeds - over 800 kilometers per hour - reaching countries like Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand hours later.</p>



<p>The death toll in these countries was also staggering - over 35,000 in Sri Lanka, 16,389 in India, and 8,345 in Thailand.</p>



<p>Other countries like Somalia, the Maldives, Malaysia, and Myanmar also reported fatalities.</p>

Evidence of a massive, early-universe black hole stuns astronomers

<p>Archaeologists in central China have identified an enormous tomb that may have belonged to a prehistoric king, or someone from a royal lineage, about 5,000 years ago. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202410/24/WS671997e9a310f1265a1c945e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">find</a> offers a glimpse into an ancient community’s organization, rituals, and social structure, with more than 350 valuable items collected from the tomb.</p>

<p>The newly explored site extends around 183 square feet (17 square meters), which was unusually large for a burial site at the time. </p>

<p>Bacteria and viruses constantly evolve to outpace our defenses, creating new challenges in public health. A research team led by Dr. Noémie Lefrancq at the University of Cambridge has developed a novel method to identify these emerging threats. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-detection-of-disease-variants">Early detection of disease variants</h2>



<p>To demonstrate its utility, the researchers tested the system on Bordetella pertussis, the bacteria behind whooping cough.</p>



<p>Recent outbreaks of this disease, some of the worst in decades, highlight the need for improved surveillance. The technique immediately identified three new variants, previously undetected, circulating among populations.</p>



<p>“This method is timely for whooping cough, given its resurgence in many countries and the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant strains,” said Professor Sylvain Brisse of Institut Pasteur.</p>



<p>The team also applied the technique to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis (TB). The analysis uncovered two antibiotic-resistant variants currently spreading, highlighting the method's potential to guide treatment choices.</p>



<p>“If we see a rapid expansion of an antibiotic-resistant variant, we can adapt the prescribed antibiotics to limit its spread,” explained Professor Henrik Salje, senior author of the report. This adaptability could transform the fight against TB, a disease that still claims millions of lives annually.</p>

<p>Loneliness and social isolation are more than just feelings - they're silent threats to our health.</p>



<p>A recent study from researchers at the University of Cambridge and Fudan University reveals a direct link between our social lives and the proteins in our blood, shedding light on why staying connected may protect against serious illnesses. </p>



<p>Published in the journal <em>Nature Human Behaviour</em>, the study analyzed blood samples from over 42,000 adults in the UK Biobank.</p>



<p>Dr. Chun Shen, a researcher in Cambridge’s Department of Clinical Neurosciences, is the study's lead author.</p>



<p>"We know that social isolation and loneliness are linked to poorer health, but we've never understood why. Our work has highlighted a number of proteins that play a key role in this relationship," explained Dr. Shen. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-loneliness-and-isolation-matter">Why loneliness and isolation matter</h2>



<p>Loneliness and social isolation impact health differently. Isolation is an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-disrupts-college-students-sleep-more-than-screen-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">objective condition</a> - living alone or rarely interacting socially.</p>



<p>Loneliness, however, is subjective and hinges on an individual’s sense of connection. Both states have been linked to chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke, but the biological mechanisms behind these links remained elusive until now.</p>



<p>The study's approach was innovative: researchers analyzed "proteomes," or the collection of proteins in the bloodstream, to identify changes associated with social factors. </p>



<p>Proteins, which govern critical functions in the body, often serve as indicators of health and potential drug targets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proteins-link-loneliness-to-poor-health">Proteins link loneliness to poor health</h2>



<p>The study identified 175 proteins associated with social isolation and 26 linked to loneliness, with substantial overlap between the two. </p>



<p>Many of these proteins are tied to inflammation, immune responses, and conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The team used Mendelian randomization, a robust statistical method, to confirm causal links between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-drops-in-middle-adulthood-but-then-grows-with-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">loneliness</a> and specific proteins.</p>



<p>One standout protein was ADM (adrenomedullin), which regulates stress responses and influences oxytocin - a hormone known to reduce stress and enhance mood.</p>



<p>“Levels of some proteins, including ADM, increase as a direct consequence of loneliness,” said Dr. Shen. </p>



<p>High ADM levels were linked to structural changes in the brain’s insula and caudate regions, essential for emotional and social processing, and were associated with a higher risk of early death.</p>



<p>Other proteins, such as ASGR1, were linked to cholesterol regulation and cardiovascular risk. Several proteins played roles in insulin resistance, arterial health, and even cancer progression. These findings highlight the far-reaching effects of social isolation on physical health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-social-bonds-protect-health">Why social bonds protect health</h2>



<p>"AI and high-throughput proteomics can pinpoint key proteins in preventing and diagnosing diseases, revolutionizing our understanding of health," noted Professor Jianfeng Feng from the <a href="https://warwick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Warwick</a>.</p>



<p>The connection between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-harms-health-more-than-alcohol-obesity-or-smoking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social relationships and health</a> isn’t new. However, this study offers unprecedented insight into the biological pathways at play. </p>



<p>It highlights how proteins, as mediators of biological processes, may bridge the gap between social experiences and physical outcomes.</p>

<p>"That’s why the <a href="https://www.who.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Health Organization</a> describes social isolation and loneliness as a ‘global public health concern,’" said Professor Sahakian. </p>



<p>The urgency is clear: without intervention, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-causes-people-to-have-more-nightmares/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ripple effects of loneliness</a> may strain individuals and healthcare systems alike.</p>

<p>Dr. Shen’s team also calls for more research into targeted therapies. The proteins identified could pave the way for treatments that mitigate the impact of loneliness on the body. By developing interventions that focus on these biological markers, we may help those most at risk.</p>



<p>The evidence is clear: our social lives profoundly influence our physical health. <p>The cause remains unknown, but the event has reignited serious concerns about the increasing accumulation of space junk in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).</p>



<p>Experts warn that this growing problem could lead to the dreaded&nbsp;Kessler Syndrome, potentially rendering space exploration and satellite use impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-low-earth-orbit-leo-the-basics">Understanding Low Earth Orbit (LEO) - the basics</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/what-is-low-earth-orbit-leo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Low Earth Orbit (LEO)</a> is a region of space that lies relatively close to Earth, typically between 100 and 1,200 miles (160 to 2,000 kilometers) above the planet’s surface. </p>



<p>It’s the most commonly used orbit for satellites and space stations because it’s cheaper and easier to reach than higher orbits. </p>



<p>In LEO, satellites orbit the Earth much faster, completing a full circle in just about 90 minutes. This means they can pass over the same spot on Earth several times a day, making LEO ideal for things like weather forecasting, communication, and Earth observation.</p>



<p>One of the most famous objects in LEO is the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-nasa-plans-to-keep-people-in-space-after-the-iss-is-gone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Space Station (ISS)</a>, which orbits the Earth at about 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the surface. </p>



<p>LEO is also where most commercial communication satellites, as well as satellites for internet services, operate. </p>



<p>Their relatively low altitude means they can provide faster data transmission speeds and lower latency compared to satellites in higher orbits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-kessler-syndrome">What is Kessler Syndrome?</h2>



<p>In 1978, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> scientists Donald Kessler and Burton Cour-Palais introduced the concept of&nbsp;Kessler Syndrome - a dire prediction about space debris.</p>



<p>The experts theorized that as objects in orbit collide, the resulting <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/what-happens-to-all-the-space-junk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">debris</a> could trigger more collisions. These repeated collisions would create a&nbsp;chain reaction, generating an increasing number of fragments in space.</p>



<p>This phenomenon could spiral out of control, leading to a heavily polluted orbital environment. If allowed to continue accumulating unchecked, the debris could render low Earth orbit completely unusable.</p>



<p>This would prevent future satellite launches, disrupt space exploration, and severely impact technologies that rely on satellites, such as GPS, internet, and weather forecasting.</p>



<p>Kessler Syndrome highlights the critical need to manage space debris effectively and prevent cascading collisions that could jeopardize humanity's access to space.</p>



<p>"The Kessler Syndrome is going to come true. If the probability of a collision is so great that we can't put a satellite in space, then we're in trouble," said&nbsp;John L. Crassidis, space debris expert at the <a href="https://www.buffalo.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University at Buffalo</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-debris-a-growing-problem">Space debris: A growing problem</h2>



<p>Space has become <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/undetectable-space-junk-is-now-easier-to-detect/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasingly crowded</a>. There are currently more than 10,000 active satellites orbiting Earth, with approximately 6,800 of these belonging to Elon Musk's <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/what-is-low-earth-orbit-leo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Starlink</a> network.</p>



<p>Companies like SpaceX and Amazon aim to launch thousands more satellites, heightening the risk of collisions.</p>



<p>Since the dawn of spaceflight in 1957, there have been over 650 fragmentation events, including collisions, explosions, and deliberate satellite destruction. </p>



<p>In 2021, Russia destroyed one of its own satellites in a military test, creating over 1,500 traceable debris fragments.</p>



<p>"The size of the debris we are tracking ranges from small fragments roughly the size of a softball to larger pieces up to the size of a car door," noted Bill Therien, CTO at <a href="https://exoanalytic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ExoAnalytic Solutions</a>.</p>



<p>"The majority of the tracked objects are on the smaller end of that spectrum, which contributes to the difficulty of consistently observing all the debris pieces."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-space-debris">Consequences of space debris</h2>



<p>Congestion in orbit endangers astronauts and vital <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clusters-final-mission-a-fiery-return-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space-based technologies</a>. For instance, the&nbsp;ISS&nbsp;has performed numerous evasive maneuvers to avoid debris. </p>



<p>In one recent incident, a piece of debris came within&nbsp;2.5 miles&nbsp;of the ISS, forcing a Russian spacecraft to adjust its trajectory.</p>



<p>If satellites collide or go offline due to overcrowded space, critical services like&nbsp;GPS, broadband internet, and television&nbsp;could fail. Experts warn that this would cause widespread disruption to modern life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigating-kessler-syndrome-risks">Mitigating Kessler Syndrome risks</h2>



<p>Efforts are underway to address this growing crisis. The European Space Agency (<a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>) is developing initiatives like <a href="https://www.esa.int/Space_Safety/ClearSpace-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clearsat-1</a> in collaboration with Swiss startup <a href="https://clearspace.today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ClearSpace</a> to capture and deorbit defunct satellites.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, technologies such as drag sails aim to accelerate the natural descent of debris into Earth's atmosphere.</p>



<p>However, tracking and mitigating debris remains a monumental challenge. The ESA estimates there are over&nbsp;40,500 pieces of debris larger than 10 centimeters&nbsp;and millions of smaller fragments that current technology cannot reliably detect. </p>



<p>"Even with today’s best sensors, there are limits to what can be reliably 'seen' or tracked, and smaller space debris is often untrackable," said&nbsp;Bob Hall, director at COMSPOC Corp.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-space-regulations">Need for space regulations</h2>



<p>Experts emphasize the urgency of international cooperation to establish binding space regulations. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.un.org/en/summit-of-the-future/pact-for-the-future" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The United Nations' Pact for the Future</a> aims to address space debris through frameworks for traffic and resource management. However, enforcement mechanisms are lacking.</p>



<p>"The biggest concern is the lack of regulation," said&nbsp;Dr. Vishnu Reddy, a professor of planetary sciences at the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>. "Having some norms and guidelines that are put forward by the industry will help a lot."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-junk-kessler-syndrome-and-the-future">Space junk, Kessler Syndrome, and the future</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, as more satellites are launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the risk of collisions and the potential for Kessler Syndrome -- the runaway chain reaction of debris collisions -- becomes an increasingly real threat. </p>



<p>With over 10,000 active satellites currently in orbit, the crowded space environment is putting everything from space missions to vital technologies like GPS and communication systems in jeopardy. </p>



<p>Experts warn that without significant efforts to manage and reduce space junk, we could face a future where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turning-moon-soil-lunar-regolith-space-debris-into-building-materials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space exploration</a> and satellite services become nearly impossible.</p>



<p>Proactive measures - ranging from technological solutions to enforceable regulations - are crucial to safeguarding Earth's orbit.</p>



<p>The key to avoiding the worst-case scenario of Kessler Syndrome lies in international cooperation and the establishment of strict regulations to prevent further overcrowding. </p>



<p>If action is not taken soon, the consequences could be catastrophic - not just for space exploration but for the many aspects of modern life that depend on satellite technology.</p>

<p>The study showed that, in aging brains, the activity of genes linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">inflammation</a> rose, while the activity of genes important for neurons decreased.</p>

<p>The researchers discovered a concentration of these changes in an “aging hotspot,” located in the hypothalamus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The most significant gene expression changes were discovered in cell types located near the third ventricle of the hypothalamus.</p>



<p>The cells include tanycytes, ependymal cells, and neurons with an important role in food intake, energy homeostasis, metabolism, and how our bodies use nutrients.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This observation hints at a connection between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-healthy-diet-can-reduce-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a>, lifestyle factors, brain aging, and changes that influence susceptibility to age-related brain disorders.</p>



<p>“Our hypothesis is that those cell types are getting less efficient at integrating signals from our environment or from things that we're consuming,” said study lead author Kelly Jin, a scientist at the <a href="https://alleninstitute.org/division/brain-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Allen Institute for Brain Science</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“And that loss of efficiency somehow contributes to what we know as aging in the rest of our body. I think that's pretty amazing, and I think it’s remarkable that we're able to find those very specific changes with the methods that we're using.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-millions-of-brain-cells">Analyzing millions of brain cells</h2>



<p>The experts employed advanced single-cell RNA sequencing and high-resolution mapping methods created through <a href="https://braininitiative.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The BRAIN Initiative®</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team analyzed over 1.2 million brain cells taken from mice at two months of age (classified as “young”) and 18 months of age (considered by researchers to be “late middle-aged”).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Mice share critical structural, functional, and genetic features with humans, making them useful for studying how the brain evolves over time.</p>



<p>“Aging is the most important risk factor for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-disease-attacks-the-brain-in-two-separate-phases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s disease</a> and many other devastating brain disorders. These results provide a highly detailed map for which brain cells may be most affected by aging,” said Richard J. Hodes, the director of <a href="https://www.nia.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NIH’s National Institute on Aging</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This new map may fundamentally alter the way scientists think about how aging affects the brain and also provides a guide for developing new treatments for aging-related brain diseases.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-will-this-study-help">How will this study help?</h2>



<p>The researchers found that particular clusters of cell types in the hypothalamus had a meaningful drop in the genes essential for neuron functioning, while the genes involved in inflammation rose in activity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts reasoned that examining this hotspot and these cell types more closely could lead to targeted interventions.</p>



<p>“We want to develop tools that can target those cell types,” said Hongkui Zeng, the executive vice president and director of the Allen Institute for Brain Science. “If we improve the function of those cells, will we be able to delay the aging process?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifestyle-factors-in-brain-aging">Lifestyle factors in brain aging</h2>



<p>These data support earlier links between aging and metabolic changes, along with evidence suggesting that intermittent fasting or a balanced diet might influence longevity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the study did not test dietary patterns directly, it highlights the importance of understanding which brain cells may be “players” in the aging process.</p>



<p>“It’s not something we directly tested in this study,” said Jin. “But to me, it points to the potential players involved in the process, which I think is a huge deal because this is a very specific, rare population of neurons that express very specific genes that people can develop tools for to target and further study.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preventing-age-related-brain-decline">Preventing age-related brain decline</h2>



<p>The study provides a starting point for deeper inquiries into how diet, lifestyle, or pharmaceuticals might alleviate or slow age-related declines in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-health-may-literally-be-a-state-of-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain health</a>. </p>



<p>By tracking the most vulnerable cell types, researchers hope to devise strategies - whether dietary or pharmaceutical - that help maintain healthy brain function well into old age.</p>



<p>“The important thing about our study is that we found the key players - the real key players - and the biological substrates for this process,” Zeng said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Putting the pieces of this puzzle together, you have to find the right players. It’s a beautiful example of why you need to study the brain and the body at this kind of cell type-specific level.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Otherwise, changes happening in specific cell types could be averaged out and undetected if you mix different types of cells together.”</p>



<p>As scientists probe further into the link between these specific cells and the hypothalamic region, this line of research sets the stage for developing new methods aimed at preserving cognitive abilities and forestalling age-related diseases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Volcanoes hold incredible power, but similar to plants and their root systems, most volcanic activity that occurs before an eruption happens beneath the surface.</p>



<p>Traditional monitoring tools focus on measuring seismic activity and collecting gas samples, yet these methods can miss subtle warning signs hidden in rugged landscapes. </p>



<p>Researchers have been searching for additional ways to detect signs of unrest before eruptions happen, especially for volcanoes that are far from inhabited areas. They are now turning to plant life for clues and signs that a volcano is close to erupting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dioxide-plants-and-volcanoes">Carbon dioxide, plants, and volcanoes</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-shows-signs-of-waking-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Volcanic gases, like carbon dioxide</a>, are often released as magma pushes upward. Detecting them can be tricky because the same gases also appear in everyday life.</p>



<p>Certain remote volcanoes lack permanent sensors or easy access, which leads scientists to test creative approaches that might reveal small changes long before other instruments notice them.</p>



<p>One project was led by Robert Bogue from <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McGill University</a> in Montreal, Canada, who worked with colleagues to measure patterns in vegetation health near hydrothermal areas in the Yellowstone Caldera. </p>



<p>The results reveal how plants respond to changes in the ground beneath them, which may point to rising magma and a heightened risk of volcanic activity or the imminent eruption of a volcano.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plants-and-volcanoes-as-allies">Plants and volcanoes as allies</h2>



<p>Plants adjust how they grow when their surroundings shift. This adjustment includes changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a> and patterns in leaf structure.</p>



<p>Variations in carbon dioxide, sulfur, and soil temperature can affect how trees flourish, and these factors often emerge in volcanic settings. </p>



<p>Scientists reason that such signals might appear in plant tissues months or years before major events occur.</p>



<p>In the field, it can be hard to see small changes in vegetation by eye alone. Forests are vast, and weather can alter growth in ways unrelated to volcanoes. </p>



<p>That is why satellite imaging has become popular. It can scan large areas and detect subtle hints of stress or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-learning-can-help-track-changes-in-forest-cover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unusual greening</a> that might not stand out on the ground.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-beneath-the-canopy">Looking beneath the canopy</h2>



<p>One helpful technique is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (<a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/features/MeasuringVegetation/measuring_vegetation_2.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NDVI</a>). This calculation captures how vigorously plants are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/details-photosynthesis-water-viewed-atomic-level-cryo-microscope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesizing</a> by measuring chlorophyll levels.</p>



<p>Scores range from negative numbers up to 1, with higher numbers pointing to healthy leaves. By comparing these values in different spots over time, researchers can see if there are trends that may connect to shifts in the subsurface environment.</p>



<p>Studies in volcanic regions suggest that small bursts of carbon dioxide and heated fluids can initially fertilize local plants. But higher concentrations of harmful gases or very hot soil can stress and even kill them. </p>



<p>Tracking these ups and downs over multiple years can reveal a story of underground changes that unfold gradually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tern-lake-as-a-proving-ground">Tern Lake as a proving ground</h2>



<p>In Wyoming, the Tern Lake thermal area sits in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-music-will-yellowstones-seismic-activity-produce/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yellowstone Caldera</a>. From 1984 to 2022, archived Landsat images showed that tree health in this hydrothermal zone improved for about 16 years. </p>



<p>Scientists believe the initial benefit may have come from extra nutrients reaching the soil. Then around the early 2000s, the satellite record captured a shift, with tree health dipping and many lodgepole pines dying near the center of activity.</p>

<p>Infrared data suggested that soil temperatures in parts of the site exceeded 122°F, and that poisonous gases and acidic fluids were breaking down <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-soil-bacteria-contribute-to-atmospheric-co2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant tissues</a>.</p>



<p>Over time, the zone of stress spread outward, and a bare patch of dead trees became more visible. This persistent change confirmed that a deeper process was heating the ground and altering the chemistry that plants depend on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-signs-from-plants-that-a-volcano-is-waking-up">Signs from plants that a volcano is waking up</h2>



<p>The research team linked these findings to pathways of hydrothermal fluids moving toward the surface. In some areas, mineral buildup may have clogged old routes, forcing new channels to open. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquake-activity-will-increase-due-to-glacial-retreat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earthquake data</a> supported this interpretation. Small tremors can indicate that magma or hot fluids are seeking different escape routes.</p>



<p>Collectively, these events point to activity that might have begun well before on-the-ground surveys took note.</p>



<p>Observations also suggest that this expansion reached a limit. Some recent field checks found signs of new seedlings taking hold in once-barren terrain. </p>



<p>This could mean the local system is calming, at least for the moment. Changes in vegetation and plant life can serve as a reminder that volcanoes and their processes are not always linear. Conditions can shift as gases and fluids come and go.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-all-of-this-mean">What does all of this mean?</h2>



<p>These discoveries illustrate how forests can serve as eyes on a hidden world. Researchers have often relied on thermal cameras and gas detectors to evaluate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axial-seamount-large-underwater-volcano-off-us-coast-will-likely-erupt-in-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic hazards</a>, but those instruments have limitations.</p>



<p>In some places, there is no easy way to install or maintain them. Harsh weather, dense canopies, and rough slopes can hamper efforts to collect reliable data.</p>



<p>Satellite imagery provides wide coverage without the need for a permanent presence in challenging locations. </p>



<p>Vegetation-based monitoring is not a standalone method, but it can offer valuable hints for scientists. If the data show unusual patterns of greening or die-off, teams can schedule closer inspection or deploy instruments before any major event.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcanoes-plants-and-a-safer-tomorrow">Volcanoes, plants, and a safer tomorrow</h2>



<p>Every volcano is unique. Some are surrounded by thick forests, while others sit in deserts or at high elevations. </p>



<p>Where conditions support enough plant life, scientists can try vegetation indexes to look for shifts that might signal building magma. </p>



<p>In other areas, this strategy may be less useful or confounded by drought, wildfires, or different species that react in unexpected ways.</p>



<p>The hope is to combine these plant observations with other signals. Minor quakes, ground swelling, and changes in gas composition all help create a clearer picture of what lies beneath the surface. </p>



<p>Scientists continue to refine these approaches. As they gather more information, they can figure out how to focus resources on volcanoes that pose the greatest risk.</p>



<p>The story at Tern Lake shows that forests can act as an early warning system, revealing shifts that might mean an eruption is more likely. By studying these patterns, experts might someday issue alerts sooner than ever before.</p>

<p>Over the past decade, there's been growing concern about the staggering rates of suicide. Now, a remarkable study from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) offers a ray of hope. The study illustrates how artificial intelligence (AI) alerts can aid doctors in identifying patients at a higher risk for suicide.</p>



<p>Led by Dr. Colin Walsh, the research team tested the Vanderbilt Suicide Attempt and Ideation Likelihood (VSAIL) model. This AI-driven system aimed to prompt suicide risk screening in three VUMC neurology clinics. </p>



<p>The findings, published in the journal <em>JAMA Network Open</em>, demonstrate that interruptive alerts - which actively notify doctors during their workflow - were far more effective than passive notifications embedded in electronic charts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-driven-alerts-for-suicide-risks">AI-driven alerts for suicide risks</h2>



<p>The study compared two types of AI-driven alerts. Interruptive alerts actively interrupted the doctor's workflow by appearing as pop-up notifications during a patient consultation. </p>



<p>This required the doctor to acknowledge and address the alert immediately, thus ensuring that they took action right away.</p>



<p>Passive alerts provided the same risk information but did so in a less direct way. The information was displayed within the patient's electronic medical chart, where it could be seen but did not actively prompt the doctor to take immediate action. </p>



<p>This approach avoided interrupting the workflow but relied on the doctor noticing and acting on the information independently.</p>



<p>The study found interruptive alerts to be more effective at prompting doctors to conduct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/women-who-were-born-prematurely-are-more-prone-to-suicide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suicide risk</a> assessments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interruptive-alerts-reduced-suicide-risk">Interruptive alerts reduced suicide risk</h2>



<p>The results were striking. The team found that interruptive alerts led to suicide risk assessments in 42% of cases, while passive alerts resulted in assessments in only 4% of cases.</p>



<p>“Most people who die by suicide have seen a health care provider in the year before their death, often for reasons unrelated to mental health. But universal screening isn’t practical in every setting. We developed VSAIL to help identify high-risk patients and prompt focused screening conversations,” said Dr. Walsh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-suicide-a-growing-public-health-crisis">Suicide: A growing public health crisis</h2>



<p>Suicide rates in the United States have been increasing steadily, with 14.2 deaths per 100,000 people annually. Suicide is now the 11th <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stock-market-volatility-increases-risk-of-heart-attacks-and-suicide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">highest cause of death</a> nationwide.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that 77% of individuals who die by suicide have seen a primary care provider within the year before their death. These figures highlight the critical need for better ways to identify and support individuals at risk.</p>



<p>The VSAIL model offers a significant advance in addressing this challenge. It uses data from routine electronic health records to assess a patient's 30-day risk of attempting suicide.</p>



<p>In prior testing, VSAIL demonstrated its effectiveness by identifying high-risk individuals, with one in 23 flagged patients later reporting suicidal thoughts. This capability positions VSAIL as a powerful tool for targeted suicide prevention efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-high-risk-patients">Identifying high-risk patients </h2>



<p>The new study involved 7,732 patient visits over six months, which triggered 596 suicide alerts.</p>



<p>Researchers focused on neurology clinics, as certain neurological conditions carry heightened suicide risks. Of the flagged visits, only about 8% prompted alerts, highlighting the model’s efficiency in busy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-alert-doctors-when-patients-might-get-sicker/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clinical environments</a>.</p>



<p>During the 30-day follow-up, no flagged patients reported suicidal ideation or attempts. However, the team noted potential downsides, such as “alert fatigue,” where frequent notifications could overwhelm clinicians. Future studies will explore this balance.</p>



<p>“Health care systems need to balance the effectiveness of interruptive alerts against their potential downsides,” Walsh noted. </p>



<p>“But these results suggest that automated risk detection combined with well-designed alerts could help us identify more patients who need suicide prevention services.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-suicide-alerts">Broader implications of suicide alerts</h2>



<p>The study’s success suggests that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/truth-deception-future-of-ai-artificial-intelligence-lie-detection-machines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">similar systems</a> could benefit other medical settings. By selectively flagging high-risk patients, AI models like VSAIL offer a feasible and impactful approach to suicide prevention.</p>



<p>“The automated system flagged only about 8% of all patient visits for screening. This selective approach makes it more feasible for busy clinics to implement suicide prevention efforts,” Dr. Walsh concluded.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by a multidisciplinary team from VUMC, including Dr. Michael Ripperger, Dr. Laurie Novak, and co-senior authors Dr. William Stead and Dr. Kevin Johnson. </p>



<p>The study paves the way for innovative, AI-driven interventions that could save lives and redefine suicide prevention in healthcare.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
