<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>The connection between early life experiences and mental health has long been a focus of psychological research. Central to these early experiences is the bond between children and their parents, a core concept in attachment theory and various other psychological frameworks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Research has consistently shown that the quality of these relationships significantly influences subjective well-being into adulthood. However, most studies to date have been limited to small, localized samples, often confined to a single country.</p>



<p>In a recent study published in <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s44271-024-00161-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Communications Psychology</em></a>, Jonathan T. Rothwell and Telli Davoodi, two researchers at <a href="https://www.gallup.com/home.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gallup</a>, investigated this relationship on a much larger and more diverse scale, analyzing data from 21 countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings suggest that the quality of parent-child relationships universally predicts adult <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-the-critical-role-of-nature-in-human-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-being</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-broader-perspective-on-parenting-and-well-being">A broader perspective on parenting and well-being</h2>



<p>“I worked in psychiatric treatment facilities and clinics during college and saw many examples of the profound effect that family conflict has on the mental health of adolescents and adults,” Rothwell said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This experience, combined with concerns over rising mental health issues among adolescents in the United States, inspired Rothwell to explore the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parents-often-feel-lonely-burnt-out-parenting-demands/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting</a> practices over generations.</p>



<p>Rothwell and Davoodi initially conducted a U.S.-based study that linked parenting practices, parent-child relationship quality, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/outdoor-classes-improve-childrens-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">youth mental health</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Building on these findings, the experts expanded their research to include a global perspective, analyzing 200,000 interviews and surveys collected from adults in 21 countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The goal was to examine the connection between childhood parenting experiences and adult well-being while accounting for cultural, religious, and socioeconomic diversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quality-of-parent-child-relationships">Quality of parent-child relationships </h2>



<p>Participants were asked about their childhood relationships with their parents, including whether they felt loved by their mother or father, the overall quality of these relationships, and whether they ever felt like outsiders in their families.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These responses were compiled into an index measuring the quality of parent-child relationships.</p>



<p>To assess adult well-being, the researchers used 19 questions focusing on participants’ levels of hope, gratitude, and satisfaction with health and virtue.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Examples of these statements included: “Despite challenges, I always remain hopeful about the future,” and “If I had to list everything that I am grateful for, it would be a long list.” </p>



<p>Additionally, the study included seven mental health indicators, primarily focusing on clinical symptoms such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fear-and-anxiety-the-mental-health-impacts-of-wildfires/">anxiety</a> and sadness.</p>



<p>The researchers also collected data on socioeconomic factors, parental religiosity, and participants' current economic and family contexts to understand how these variables interacted with parenting experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parent-child-relationships-and-adult-flourishing">Parent-child relationships and adult flourishing</h2>



<p>The study revealed a strong, universal link between positive parent-child relationships and adult well-being.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found a substantial effect of parent-child relationships on both flourishing and mental health,” Rothwell said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This effect was larger than any other variable tested, including socioeconomic status, education level, income, gender, and financial security.</p>



<p>Remarkably, the positive association between parent-child relationships and adult flourishing was observed across all countries in the sample.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Only one country failed to meet conventional levels of statistical significance, which the researchers attributed to the younger population surveyed there. After adjusting for age distribution, even this outlier conformed to the overall trend.</p>



<p>The researchers also found that the influence of parent-child relationships on well-being was more pronounced in higher-income and secular countries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In these regions, where basic needs like food and shelter are typically met, the quality of family relationships appears to play a larger role in determining individual happiness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-religion-nbsp">The role of religion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>An intriguing finding was the role of parental religiosity. “Our main secondary finding is that more religious parents tend to have better relationships with their children in every country in our sample,” Rothwell noted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This may explain why lower-income, more religious countries scored higher on flourishing indexes despite facing greater economic challenges.</p>



<p>This observation raises critical cultural questions. As societies develop and become more secular, there is a risk of losing traditional parenting wisdom that fosters strong family bonds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rothwell emphasized the importance of preserving these practices while navigating societal change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-research">Implications and future research</h2>



<p>The findings underscore the profound and lasting impact of childhood experiences on adult well-being and mental health. They also highlight the need for global, culturally inclusive research to further understand this relationship.</p>



<p>“In early 2025, my colleagues and I at Gallup are fielding a new U.S. survey on parenting to further improve the measurement of parenting practices that lead to the highest quality relationships and best long-term mental health outcomes,” said Rothwell.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His future work aims to explore how parenting shapes character traits and virtues, as well as to disentangle the effects of genetics from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-resolutions-better-parenting-and-family-health-are-top-priorities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parenting practices</a>.</p>



<p>Ultimately, Rothwell plans to compile these insights into a book, shedding light on how parenting influences human flourishing and offering guidance for future generations.</p>

<p>Weather shapes our daily lives, influencing decisions about safety, travel, and work. As climate change drives more extreme events, accurate forecasts become indispensable. However, predicting weather patterns beyond the next few days remains challenging.</p>



<p>Probabilistic ensemble forecasts have emerged as an essential prediction tool, offering a range of possible scenarios to inform decisions. Now, a new AI model, GenCast, aims to redefine weather forecasting with unmatched precision and speed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-gencast-unique">What makes GenCast unique?</h2>



<p>Developed by researchers and recently featured in the journal&nbsp;<em>Nature</em>, GenCast is a high-resolution AI ensemble model that is capable of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/winter-of-extremes-how-will-la-nina-affect-weather-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forecasting weather</a> for up to 15 days ahead.</p>



<p>Compared to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ (ECMWF) ENS system, GenCast consistently delivers more accurate predictions. </p>



<p>The model is not only faster but also highly reliable in predicting both daily <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/winter-of-extremes-how-will-la-nina-affect-weather-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather patterns</a> and extreme events like cyclones and heat waves.</p>



<p>GenCast represents a significant leap from its predecessor - a deterministic model that offered a single best estimate. Instead, GenCast uses an ensemble of 50 or more predictions, each representing a potential weather trajectory.</p>



<p>This approach provides a nuanced view of possible outcomes that is crucial for effective decision-making.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leap-in-ai-technology">Leap in AI technology</h2>



<p>GenCast utilizes diffusion models, a type of generative AI previously used in creating images, videos, and music. Adapted for Earth’s spherical geometry, the model accurately simulates complex <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-and-severe-solar-storms-will-continue-through-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather patterns</a>. </p>



<p>Researchers trained GenCast using four decades of historical data from ECMWF’s ERA5 archive, which includes variables such as temperature, wind speed, and pressure at multiple altitudes.</p>



<p>The result is a model with an unparalleled understanding of global weather dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-performance-benchmarks-of-gencast">Performance benchmarks of GenCast</h2>



<p>The researchers evaluated GenCast using data from 2019, testing it on 1,320 combinations of variables and lead times. </p>



<p>GenCast outperformed the ENS in 97.2% of these cases and excelled in 99.8% of scenarios at lead times beyond 36 hours. These results demonstrate GenCast’s superior skill in predicting both standard weather conditions and extreme events.</p>



<p>For example, in forecasting extreme heat or high winds, GenCast consistently provided higher economic value. Its ensemble <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-surge-in-global-warming-may-have-an-unexpected-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forecasts</a> balance confidence and uncertainty, offering actionable insights for scenarios like cyclone paths. </p>



<p>One striking example was Typhoon Hagibis. Seven days before landfall, GenCast forecasted a wide range of possible paths, which narrowed into a precise and accurate cluster as the storm approached Japan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-efficiency-and-scalability">Efficiency and scalability</h2>



<p>GenCast’s efficiency is another standout feature. While traditional models require hours on supercomputers, GenCast generates a 15-day forecast in just eight minutes using a single Google Cloud TPU v5. </p>



<p>This speed and scalability make it an ideal tool for real-time applications and broader accessibility.</p>

<p>The potential applications of GenCast extend far beyond weather forecasting. <p>Vinegar has been part of human life for a very long time. It appears in kitchens, pops up in home remedies, and gets passed around as a so-called cure-all.</p>



<p>Vinegar’s reputation stretches far and wide. People say it can soothe a scratchy throat or help clean a cut. Others claim it helps the belly handle food a little better.</p>



<p>Folk tales and family traditions often link vinegar, especially apple cider varieties, to dozens of health benefits. </p>



<p>Some call it a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oxytocin-cuddle-hormone-fosters-love-boosts-memory-and-may-cure-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wonder drug</a>, while others remain skeptical. And now, there is scientific proof that vinegar can even play a role in curing depression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vinegar-and-depression">Vinegar and depression</h2>



<p>According to research led by <a href="https://www.asu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arizona State University</a> dietician Haley Barrong and colleagues, a daily portion of vinegar might have more to offer than expected. </p>



<p>Recent work suggests that it may play a role in easing depression symptoms, an idea that takes vinegar from the kitchen cabinet into conversations about everyday wellbeing.</p>



<p>Vinegar’s main ingredient is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientifically-proven-tips-for-better-kombucha-brewing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">acetic acid</a>. It is what gives this sour liquid its sharp taste. Centuries ago, people thought that vinegar’s bite held the key to better health. </p>



<p>Nowadays, modern research looks deeper. One recent study took a closer look at vinegar’s effects on mood. </p>



<p>The team took steps to connect vinegar intake not just to self-reported feelings, but also to shifts in metabolic activity. Metabolism turns food into energy and other vital <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-diets-of-infants-provide-the-building-blocks-of-human-vision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">building blocks in the body</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controlled-experiment-on-mood">Controlled experiment on mood</h2>



<p>The research involved 28 overweight but otherwise healthy adults. They were divided into two groups. </p>



<p>One group took two tablespoons of red wine vinegar twice each day, while the other took a daily pill that contained a very small amount of vinegar.</p>



<p>During the four-week period, participants answered questions about their mental health, using surveys that health professionals know well. </p>



<p>They completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (<a href="https://www.apa.org/pi/about/publications/caregivers/practice-settings/assessment/tools/depression-scale" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CES-D</a>) questionnaire and the Patient Health Questionnaire (<a href="https://med.stanford.edu/fastlab/research/imapp/msrs/_jcr_content/main/accordion/accordion_content3/download_256324296/file.res/PHQ9%20id%20date%2008.03.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PHQ-9</a>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-boosting-vitamin-b3-levels">Boosting vitamin B3 levels</h2>



<p>A noticeable increase in the levels of nicotinamide, a form of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molecule-in-coffee-trigonelline-keeps-muscles-young/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vitamin B3</a>, appeared in the group consuming vinegar daily. </p>



<p>This group showed an 86 percent boost in that nutrient, which researchers previously linked to anti-inflammatory effects. </p>



<p>The published paper states, “This data provides additional support that daily vinegar ingestion over four weeks can improve self-reported depression symptomology in generally healthy adults and that alterations in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vitamin-b-paradox-supplement-linked-to-heart-disease-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">[vitamin B3] metabolism</a> may factor into this improvement.”</p>

<p>For many, depression affects mood, energy, concentration, appetite, and sleep. It often makes life feel heavy. </p>



<p>Some people might feel hopeless, while others lose interest in things they once enjoyed. Some struggle to get out of bed, while others find themselves awake all night. </p>



<p>Depression varies, and it does not follow a single pattern. It is not a sign of weakness. It may develop from a mix of factors, such as shifts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-or-exercise-a-chemical-in-the-brain-helps-us-decide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain chemistry</a>, family history, health conditions, or life events. It lingers, often making everyday tasks feel harder than they should.</p>



<p>Some individuals might not show obvious signs. They could manage a smile for friends or get their work done without hinting at the weight they carry inside. </p>



<p>Identifying depression early matters because there are many ways to find support. Information about new approaches to treat depression, such as a daily dose of vinegar, draws attention because depression is not a one-size-fits-all fix.</p>

<p>Smaller pilot studies like this one can sometimes spark interest in following up with larger groups of people, different durations, or other forms of vinegar. </p>



<p>The size of this study was small, and participants only had mild symptoms, but the differences the team found have attracted attention.</p>

<p>The authors acknowledge that bigger, longer-term research would be ideal to get a better grasp on exactly how vinegar is able to ease depression symptoms in many people. </p>



<p>They note that their secondary analysis, which adjusted for initial survey differences, was not significant. Still, they believe the link between daily vinegar intake and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/confirmed-magic-mushrooms-can-effectively-treat-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported mood changes</a> deserves more focus. </p>



<p>“Depressive disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions in the world," the authors explained. </p>



<p>“The commonly prescribed antidepressant medications can have serious side effects, and their efficacy varies widely. Thus, simple, effective adjunct therapies are needed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-all-of-this-mean">What does all of this mean?</h2>



<p>Studies often look beyond a single variable. Factors like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-color-of-light-impacts-our-internal-clocks-and-circadian-rhythms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep patterns</a>, body temperature, and overall lifestyle might matter. </p>



<p>This work hints at a different angle. It might prompt questions about whether vinegar or its components could work alongside other treatments. </p>



<p>The researchers say, “Future research examining the effects of vinegar administration in clinically depressed or at-risk populations, and those on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-antidepressants-could-help-treat-brain-tumors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antidepressant medications</a>, is warranted.”</p>



<p>They add, “A focus on mechanisms and large patient samples will strengthen the science and provide the evidence to more firmly demonstrate vinegar’s role in health promotion.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vinegar-depression-and-human-health">Vinegar, depression, and human health</h2>



<p>It remains to be seen if vinegar will ever become a regular part of a care plan for depression or depressive symptoms. </p>



<p>Although initial results are encouraging, the current information does not prove it is better than other approaches. </p>



<p>Still, the exploration of vinegar as an everyday element that might influence mood feels notable. </p>



<p>Individuals who deal with depression often seek a variety of options. Having extra tools makes sense, given that what works for one person may not help another. </p>



<p>Human health involves many complex processes, and adding many small steps into a routine can often prove beneficial. This research gives another hint that everyday items might be worth a second look.</p>

<p>Since 1970, over half of all sharks and rays have vanished from our oceans, according to a new study. This alarming decline in sharks and rays stems primarily from overfishing, which has pushed these ancient and ecologically critical species to the brink. </p>



<p>However, researchers offer hope with clear strategies to halt further losses and support recovery efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-scale-of-decline">The scale of decline</h2>



<p>The research highlights that overfishing has caused a 50% decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepwater-desperation-the-race-to-save-sharks-and-rays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chondrichthyan fishes</a> - a group comprising sharks, rays, and chimeras. This diverse group of over 1,199 different species faces increasing threats despite advances in our understanding of these creatures.</p>



<p>"In addition to intentional targeting and bycatch, the threat to sharks is compounded by habitat degradation, climate change, and pollution," noted Professor Colin Simpfendorfer from <a href="https://www.jcu.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Cook University</a> in Australia.</p>



<p>"The result is over one-third of chondrichthyans now face the threat of extinction."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sharks-and-rays-guardians-of-aquatic-ecosystems">Sharks and rays: Guardians of aquatic ecosystems</h2>



<p>The disappearance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unexpected-discovery-large-sharks-are-hunting-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sharks</a> and rays threatens the balance of aquatic ecosystems worldwide. </p>



<p>Lead author Professor Nicholas Dulvy from <a href="https://www.sfu.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Simon Fraser University</a> in Canada notes that population declines began in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters before spreading to open oceans and deep seas. These marine creatures play vital roles in their environments. </p>



<p>"Sharks and rays are important predators, and their decline disrupts food webs throughout the ocean," said Dr. Nathan Pacoureau from the European Institute for Marine Studies at <a href="https://brest-universite.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brest University</a>, France.</p>



<p>"Larger wide-ranging species connect ecosystems. For example, reef sharks transfer nutrients from deeper waters to coral reefs, helping to sustain those ecosystems. Rays are important foraging animals that mix and oxygenate sediments, influencing marine productivity and carbon storage," explained Pacoureau.</p>



<p>Without these keystone species, aquatic ecosystems could face severe disruption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-overfishing-on-sharks">Impacts of overfishing on sharks</h2>



<p>Overfishing - the practice of catching fish faster than they can reproduce - remains the leading driver of shark and ray declines.</p>



<p>The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (<a href="https://www.fao.org/home/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNFAO</a>) reports that one-third of the world’s fisheries are operating beyond sustainable limits, and the number of overfished stocks has tripled in the last 50 years.</p>



<p>Bycatch, the unintended capture of non-target species, exacerbates the crisis. Sharks and rays frequently end up as unintended victims in nets meant for other fish, which compounds their population losses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recovery-from-overfishing">Recovery from overfishing</h2>



<p>Despite these challenges, the solutions for addressing the decline are straightforward. </p>



<p>"Nations can reduce the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reef-sharks-are-abandoning-their-homes-due-to-ocean-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinction risk</a> by lowering fishing pressure to sustainable levels, strengthening fisheries governance, and eliminating harmful subsidies," said Professor Simpfendorfer.</p>



<p>Some regions have already made progress. Countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, and parts of Europe and South Africa have implemented science-based limits on fishing catches. </p>



<p>These measures include efforts to reduce bycatch and protect critical habitats, thus offering a glimmer of hope for chondrichthyan recovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-sharks-and-rays-from-overfishing">Protecting sharks and rays from overfishing</h2>



<p>The study highlights the urgency of collective action to safeguard these ancient species. Science-driven policies and international cooperation are vital to ensuring sharks and rays do not slip further toward extinction. </p>



<p>By addressing overfishing and habitat degradation for sharks, humanity can help restore balance to marine ecosystems and protect these vital guardians of the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-sharks-and-rays">More about sharks and rays</h2>



<p>Sharks and rays belong to the group of cartilaginous fishes, known scientifically as Chondrichthyes. </p>



<p>Unlike bony fishes, their skeletons consist entirely of cartilage, making them lighter and more flexible. This evolutionary adaptation has helped them dominate aquatic ecosystems for over 400 million years.</p>



<p>Sharks, ranging from the tiny dwarf lantern shark to the massive whale shark, exhibit incredible diversity. Rays, their flat-bodied relatives, thrive in environments from shallow waters to the deep ocean floors.</p>



<p>Their unique physiology, including electrosensory systems, allows them to detect prey hidden under sand or at great distances from them.</p>

<p>Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have added a new layer of understanding to the enigma of why the universe is expanding more quickly now than it did billions of years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Known as the Hubble tension, this discrepancy in measurements of the universe's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universes-expansion-rate-hubble-tension-puzzles-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expansion rate</a> has baffled scientists for over a decade.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The latest data confirms the accuracy of the Hubble Space Telescope's measurements, ruling out significant errors in its observations and suggesting that the answer lies in unexplored aspects of the universe’s physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observations-and-predictions-of-the-expansion-rate">Observations and predictions of the expansion rate </h2>



<p>The research was led by Nobel laureate Adam Riess of <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a>. “The discrepancy between the observed expansion rate of the universe and the predictions of the standard model suggests that our understanding of the universe may be incomplete,” Riess said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“With two NASA flagship telescopes now confirming each other’s findings, we must take this [Hubble tension] problem very seriously - it’s a challenge but also an incredible opportunity to learn more about our universe.”</p>



<p>Riess and his team used data from the James Webb telescope to cross-verify Hubble’s measure of the Hubble constant, a value describing the universe’s rate of expansion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team focused on distances to galaxies hosting supernovae that had previously been measured by Hubble, using three independent methods to confirm the precision of Hubble’s results.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings showed that Webb’s measurements aligned closely with those of Hubble, ruling out any observational inaccuracies large enough to account for the tension.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-persistent-hubble-tension">The persistent Hubble tension</h2>



<p>The Hubble constant measured through telescope observations consistently yields a value of 70 to 76 kilometers per second per megaparsec, with a mean of 73 km/s/Mpc.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In contrast, the standard cosmological model predicts a lower value of about 67-68 km/s/Mpc. This 5-6 km/s/Mpc difference has puzzled cosmologists, as it is too significant to attribute to simple measurement errors.</p>



<p>“The Webb data is like looking at the universe in high definition for the first time and really improves the signal-to-noise of the measurements,’’ said study co-author Siyang Li, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The new observations covered roughly a third of Hubble’s full galaxy sample, providing results with an impressive precision difference of under 2% - far smaller than the Hubble tension discrepancy, which stands at around 8-9%.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-the-expansion-of-the-universe-nbsp">Measuring the expansion of the universe&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study employed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expansion-rate-of-the-universe-confirmed-by-jwst/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>’s advanced technology to measure distances using Cepheid variables, a gold-standard method for gauging cosmic distances. The experts also incorporated measurements of carbon-rich stars and the brightest red giants. </p>



<p>Combined observations of these galaxies and their supernovae produced a Hubble constant of 72.6 km/s/Mpc, closely matching Hubble’s previous finding of 72.8 km/s/Mpc for the same galaxies.</p>



<p>These findings further confirm that the Hubble tension is unlikely to stem from flaws in measurement techniques. Instead, the discrepancy hints at new, unknown factors influencing the universe’s behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As the researchers noted, this might indicate gaps in the current understanding of fundamental physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-explanations-for-the-hubble-tension">Possible explanations for the Hubble tension</h2>



<p>Marc Kamionkowski, a cosmologist at Johns Hopkins who was not involved in the study, speculated on what might account for the Hubble tension.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“One possible explanation for the Hubble tension would be if there was something missing in our understanding of the early universe, such as a new component of matter - early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-is-ripping-the-universe-apart-but-we-arent-sure-how/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a> - that gave the universe an unexpected kick after the Big Bang,” said Kamionkowski.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He also suggested other possibilities, including “funny dark matter properties, exotic particles, changing electron mass, or primordial magnetic fields that may do the trick.”</p>



<p>Although the standard model of cosmology has successfully explained many aspects of the universe, including the cosmic microwave background and the evolution of galaxies, it does not fully account for the nature of dark matter and dark energy. These mysterious components make up approximately 96% of the universe and drive its accelerated expansion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-structure-and-history-of-the-universe">The structure and history of the universe </h2>



<p>The Hubble constant may not have practical implications for everyday life on Earth, but it plays a vital role in mapping the structure and history of the universe. It helps cosmologists trace the universe’s state 13-14 billion years after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bang</a> and refine models of its large-scale behavior.</p>



<p>Resolving the Hubble tension could unlock new insights into other inconsistencies in the standard cosmological model that have come to light in recent years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Riess and his team emphasized the importance of this challenge, noting that continued investigation could yield groundbreaking discoveries about the cosmos.</p>



<p>“The Webb data is providing unprecedented clarity, and as we delve deeper, we have the opportunity to reveal fundamental truths about the universe. The Hubble tension isn’t just a problem to solve - it’s a doorway to deeper understanding,” Riess concluded.</p>

<p>Even as catastrophic floods and storms intensify in parts of the world, more than three-quarters of Earth’s land has become permanently drier in recent decades, according to a stark new analysis released by UN scientists.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Released by the <a href="https://www.unccd.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UN Convention to Combat Desertification</a>, the report reveals that about 77.6% of Earth’s land experienced drier conditions over the three decades leading up to 2020 compared to the previous 30-year period.</p>



<p>Over the same three decades, drylands expanded by about 4.3 million km² - an area nearly a third larger than India - and now encompass 40.6% of all land on Earth, excluding Antarctica.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Within this timeframe, some 7.6% of global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/land-degradation-severely-threatens-planetary-boundaries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lands</a> - an area larger than Canada - surpassed aridity thresholds. Most transitioned from humid landscapes to drylands, setting off profound repercussions for agriculture, ecosystems, and the communities that depend on them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-emissions-scenarios-and-dryland-expansion">High-emissions scenarios and dryland expansion</h2>



<p>The report warns that if the world does not curb <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a>, an additional 3% of today’s humid areas could become drylands by the end of this century.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Under high emissions scenarios, drylands are projected to spread across regions including the Midwestern United States, central Mexico, northern Venezuela, north-eastern Brazil, south-eastern Argentina, the entire Mediterranean region, the Black Sea coast, large parts of southern Africa, and southern Australia.</p>



<p>The study, titled <em>The Global Threat of Drying Lands: Regional and Global Aridity Trends and Future Projections</em>, was presented at the <a href="https://www.unccdcop16.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">16th UNCCD conference (COP16)</a> in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.</p>



<p>This was the largest UN land conference to date and the first in the Middle East - a region profoundly affected by aridity’s impacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This analysis finally dispels an uncertainty that has long surrounded global drying trends,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, UNCCD Executive Secretary. “For the first time, the aridity crisis has been documented with scientific clarity, revealing an existential threat affecting billions around the globe.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-drier-land">Climate change and drier land</h2>



<p>According to the UNCCD Science-Policy Interface, which authored the report, human-caused <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> is the primary driver of this shift.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Emissions from electricity generation, transportation, industry, and land-use changes are heating the planet and altering rainfall patterns, evaporation rates, and plant life - conditions that underpin increasing aridity.</p>



<p>Data from global aridity indexes, which monitor long-term environmental shifts, reveal extensive drying trends.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Areas most affected include almost all of Europe (95.9% of its land), parts of the western United States, Brazil, parts of Asia (notably eastern Asia), and central Africa.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Meanwhile, less than a quarter of the planet’s land (22.4%) became wetter, with some positive trends observed in the central United States, Angola’s Atlantic coast, and parts of Southeast Asia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Overall, drylands are expanding globally, pushing ecosystems and societies into life-threatening challenges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-impacts-on-human-communities">Growing impacts on human communities</h2>



<p>The report identifies South Sudan and Tanzania as countries with the largest percentage of land turning into drylands, and China as having the greatest total area shifting from non-drylands into drylands.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As of 2020, 2.3 billion people - well over a quarter of the global population - live in these expanding drylands. Aridity-related land degradation, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oases-grow-by-human-effort-but-face-threats-from-desertification/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desertification</a>, poses a dire threat to human well-being and ecological stability.</p>



<p>The future could be even more bleak without action. Under worst-case emissions scenarios, up to five billion people might inhabit drylands by the century’s end. Such a scenario would mean depleted soils, scarce water resources, and collapsing ecosystems for large swaths of humanity.</p>



<p>Forced migration, already visible in some of the world’s driest regions, is one of the most immediate consequences. As land becomes inhospitable and farming fails, families and communities often have no choice but to relocate, intensifying social and political challenges globally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cascading-effects-of-drier-land">Cascading effects of drier land</h2>



<p>The cascading effects of rising aridity extend well beyond agriculture and water scarcity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report warns that one-fifth of all land could undergo abrupt ecosystem transformations - forests turning into grasslands and other dramatic changes - leading to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinctions</a> among many of the world’s plant and animal species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Aridity also drives a host of other problems, from declining GDP (notably in Africa) to intensifying wildfires and even public health crises, especially for children and women.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-global-drying-trend-nbsp">The global drying trend&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Addressing the threat of aridity demands more than just acknowledging the science - it requires concerted policy action and comprehensive adaptation measures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report calls for improving aridity monitoring and integrating these metrics into drought monitoring systems, incentivizing sustainable land use, investing in water-efficient technologies, and building resilience in vulnerable communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts also emphasize the need for international frameworks and collaboration, emphasizing that human rights, social justice, and responsible governance must guide this collective effort.</p>



<p>In essence, the global drying trend forces a new narrative: as we confront climate change, we must recognize the irreversible transformation of once-fertile lands into dry regions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Successfully adapting to this reality will determine whether we can secure a sustainable and equitable future in a world defined increasingly by the absence of water and the presence of ever-expanding drylands.</p>

<p>Echinoderms like brittle stars and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-cucumbers-protect-coral-reefs-from-disease-and-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea cucumbers</a> possess a unique ability to rapidly adapt their collagenous tissues. This capability allows them to detach limbs to escape predators or withstand environmental changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research team focused on juxtaligamental cells (JLCs), which play a critical role in controlling MCT. By comparing tissue regions rich in JLCs to areas without them, the experts identified key genomic relationships and isolated the role of these cells in regulating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-dinosaur-collagen-survived-the-test-of-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">collagen</a> transformations.</p>



<p>The study highlights how brittle stars, as non-model organisms, present unique challenges for research. They lack the standardized protocols available for mice and other common model organisms, requiring researchers to develop innovative approaches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the study’s most exciting outcomes is its potential to inspire the development of dynamic biomaterials.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers have already filed a provisional patent for a collagen-based biomaterial capable of changing its pliability. Machado envisions this material as a “collagen matrix that can change its pliability to become as soft or rigid as we want.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Such a material could revolutionize medicine, serving as a rapid-response surgical adhesive or even “gelatinous origami” to replace traditional stents.</p>

<p>The research revealed 16 candidate genes that regulate MCT, offering a roadmap for future investigations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using advanced techniques like in situ hybridization (ISH) and RNA interference (RNAi), the team plans to explore how turning off these genes affects tissue pliability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Confirming the role of the identified candidate genes in controlling MCT tensile strength will open up a wide range of new possibilities for both fundamental biology and biomedicine,” the researchers said.</p>

<p>"Man's best friend" takes on a new meaning in the field of medicine. Recent research findings suggest that dogs can effectively sniff out bladder cancer in other canines.</p>



<p>This discovery comes from a study conducted by researchers at the University of Bristol.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-training-dogs-for-cancer-detection">Training dogs for cancer detection</h2>



<p>Three specially trained dogs - Kizzy, a chocolate working cocker spaniel; Jobi, a black cocker spaniel; and Marlow, a black Labrador - played a central role in the study.</p>



<p>The dogs had prior experience detecting human bladder and prostate cancers and were retrained by Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) to identify canine urothelial carcinoma (UC), a common type of bladder cancer in dogs.</p>



<p>The training process involved teaching the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/national-dog-day-honoring-mans-best-friend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a> to sniff urine samples attached to metal stands in MDD’s training room. The dogs displayed indication behaviors - such as sitting, staring, or standing - to signal cancer-positive samples.</p>



<p>Rewards included food and play, which kept the training engaging for these canines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogs-sniffing-out-cancer">Dogs sniffing out cancer</h2>



<p>The findings reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-and-dogs-were-bonding-much-earlier-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">canine</a> bladder cancer emits a distinct smell that trained dogs can detect non-invasively. </p>



<p>The detection rate reached up to 90% sensitivity (the rate at which the dogs correctly identified cancer-positive samples), and up to 95% specificity, meaning they accurately ignored cancer-free samples. </p>



<p>These results highlight the remarkable accuracy of this method.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-of-traditional-diagnosis">Challenges of traditional diagnosis</h2>



<p>Bladder cancer accounts for nearly 2% of all reported canine cancers, with about one in four dogs developing cancer in their lifetime. </p>



<p>Urothelial carcinoma often mimics symptoms of other urinary tract disorders, like infections or bladder stones, making diagnosis challenging. </p>



<p>Additionally, traditional diagnostic methods like urine sampling via cystocentesis carry risks, such as tumor seeding, and definitive diagnosis requires invasive biopsy procedures. </p>



<p>These factors can delay treatment, leaving the disease to progress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-research">Broader implications of the research </h2>



<p>"We are delighted that [the dogs] were so successful at finding the odor of bladder cancer as it is a difficult disease to diagnose using traditional methods and unpleasant and intrusive for canine patients," noted Claire Guest, CEO and Co-Founder of Medical Detection Dogs.</p>



<p> "There is great potential value in a new, early, cheap, rapid, and non-invasive diagnostic test which could lead to opportunities for earlier intervention."</p>



<p>The study also suggests that these trained <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-dogs-are-rapidly-evolving-in-strange-ways-due-to-nuclear-radiation-exposure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a> could provide a faster, more comfortable alternative to traditional diagnostics. </p>



<p>This could enable earlier treatment for affected dogs, improving outcomes and quality of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogs-are-highly-effective-for-cancer-diagnosis">Dogs are highly effective for cancer diagnosis</h2>



<p>"This study adds to the growing body of evidence which shows dogs are highly effective at detecting odors from changes linked to health in both humans and canines," noted Dr. Nicola Rooney from <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/vet-school/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bristol Veterinary School</a>.</p>



<p>"The dogs involved with the study demonstrated a sensitivity superior to cytology of a free catch sample and similar to the BRAF test," added Isabelle Desmas-Bazelle, who led the study at <a href="https://www.vetspecialists.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Davies Veterinary Specialists</a>.</p>



<p>It suggests cancer cells have a unique odor pattern, possibly via secretion of volatile organic chemicals. </p>



<p>"This exciting research could lead to the development of an electronic nose as an additional diagnostic test for UC," added Desmas-Bazelle, highlighting the potential for technological advancements. </p>

<p>For instance, trained dogs can identify diabetes by sensing hypoglycemic episodes through changes in a person’s scent. Similarly, they can detect the presence of malaria by sniffing worn socks from infected individuals. </p>



<p>Dogs have also demonstrated the ability to identify neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and certain bacterial infections like <em>Clostridium difficile</em>.</p>



<p>These skills rely on their acute olfactory senses, which can detect volatile organic compounds associated with different diseases. </p>



<p>Their application in real-world medical diagnostics is growing, and provides a non-invasive and rapid method to detect conditions that often require complex testing.</p>

<p>Memory, a phenomenon that has fascinated scientists and psychologists for generations, remains a puzzle with many unanswered questions. </p>



<p>A recently published review paper provides fresh insights into why certain experiences are retained, and explores the factors that shape what people remember.</p>



<p>Authored by Fernanda Morales-Calva, a graduate student in psychological sciences, and Stephanie Leal, an adjunct assistant professor at <a href="https://www.rice.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rice University</a>, the review appears in a special issue of the journal <em>Cognitive, Affective &amp; Behavioral Neuroscience</em>.</p>



<p>The researchers investigated the "three Ws" of memory - what, where, and when - while addressing the vital question of why certain experiences become memorable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experiences-that-we-remember">Experiences that we remember </h2>



<p>The researchers examined existing studies to develop a comprehensive understanding of how emotional significance, personal relevance, and individual differences shape <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-human-brain-decides-which-memories-to-remember/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory retention</a>. They emphasized that memory is deeply subjective.</p>



<p>“Memory is not a one-size-fits-all phenomenon. What’s memorable for one person might be entirely forgettable for another, depending on their unique background and cognitive priorities,” explained  Morales-Calva. </p>



<p>The researchers categorized the study into three core domains: what, where, and when we remember.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-memory-how-we-remember-traumatic-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emotionally significant events</a>, personally relevant experiences, and focused attention emerged as critical factors shaping recall. </p>



<p>For example, individuals are more likely to remember events that are imbued with emotional resonance or details they consciously focus on.</p>



<p>Moreover, individual circumstances such as cultural, cognitive, and personal differences further highlight the fluidity of how experiences are retained.</p>



<p>“This review highlights the importance of considering subjectivity and context in memory research. By accounting for these variables, we can develop more accurate diagnostic tools and effective interventions,” noted Leal, stressing the importance of this variability. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spatial-memory-and-timing">Spatial memory and timing</h2>



<p>The researchers also emphasized the importance of <em>where</em> events occur. The concept of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-have-remarkable-spatial-memory-and-sense-of-direction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spatial memory</a>, often studied in animals, is highly relevant to human experiences as well.</p>



<p>According to Morales-Calva and Leal, new environments demand more attention and leave stronger imprints on memory compared to routine, familiar settings.</p>



<p>Additionally, the timing - or the <em>when</em> - of an event impacts memory retention. Humans tend to sequence events and recognize transitions, which aids in recall.</p>



<p>“Specific events are often compartmentalized into distinct episodes, making them easier to remember,” the researchers explained.</p>

<p>In the pursuit of innovation, a group of scientists has achieved something remarkable: they've found a way to create "real" diamonds at normal room temperature and pressure.</p>



<p>This breakthrough not only eliminates the need for a starter gem but also drastically simplifies the process of producing lab-grown diamonds, making it more efficient and potentially more accessible. </p>



<p>By challenging conventional methods, this discovery paves the way for a new era in diamond synthesis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-nature-makes-diamonds">How nature makes diamonds</h2>



<p>Most diamonds start their journey about 90 to 150 miles beneath the surface, in a part of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-breaking-hole-drilled-into-earths-mantle-scientific-goldmine-magma-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's mantle</a> where temperatures soar to around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and pressures are mind-bogglingly high. </p>



<p>Under these extreme conditions, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graphite-in-2-5-billion-year-old-ruby-linked-to-early-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon atoms</a> bond together in a unique crystal structure, creating the hard, shiny gems we know and love.</p>



<p>But getting those diamonds to the surface is another story. Volcanic eruptions, millions of years ago, brought diamonds closer to the Earth’s crust in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamond-fountain-eruption-from-volcanoes-when-earth-continents-shift/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rocks called kimberlite</a> or lamproite. </p>



<p>These eruptions were like express elevators, moving the diamonds upward quickly enough to keep them intact under lower-pressure conditions. </p>



<p>Today, miners find these ancient gems in volcanic pipes or riverbeds where erosion has carried them. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mimicking-extreme-conditions-in-the-lab">Mimicking extreme conditions in the lab</h2>



<p>To mimic these natural conditions in the lab, scientists have been using a method called high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) growth. </p>



<p>With this method, they have been simulating the same extreme conditions in order to coerce dissolved carbon, in liquid metals like iron, to convert into diamond around a starter <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-second-largest-diamond-found-in-botswana/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gem</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-of-growing-diamonds">Challenges of growing diamonds</h2>



<p>This approach has its limitations. Incredible pressure and heat aren't easy to achieve or maintain in a lab setting. And, the size of the lab-made gems leaves a bit to be desired.</p>



<p>The largest ones only reach about the size of a blueberry, and the process is time-consuming.</p>



<p>Alternative methods, such as chemical vapor deposition, attempt to eliminate some of HPHT's limitations, such as the need for high pressures, but the requirement for a starter diamond remains.</p>



<p>The new technique, developed by a team led by Rodney Ruoff, a physical chemist at the <a href="https://www.ibs.re.kr/eng.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Basic Science</a> in South Korea, eliminates some of the disadvantages of the above-mentioned synthesis processes. </p>



<p>According to Ruoff, he has been pondering new ways to grow diamonds for over a decade now, challenging conventional thinking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secret-to-growing-diamonds">Secret to growing diamonds</h2>



<p>The team's method began with electrically heated gallium with a little bit of silicon in a graphite crucible. </p>



<p>While gallium may sound exotic, it was actually chosen based on a previous unrelated study that identified its ability to catalyze the formation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graphene-new-wonder-material-earth-technology-found-moon-soil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">graphene</a>, a carbon cousin to diamond.</p>



<p>The team also invented a special chamber containing a 2.4-gallon crucible where the gallium-silicon mix awaited. </p>



<p>This crucible chamber, designed to be at sea-level atmospheric pressure, was ready to experiment in just 15 minutes. It allowed the experimental gas mixtures to be changed rapidly and easily to determine the optimal blend.</p>



<p>After numerous trials, the scientists found that an optimal mixture of gallium-nickel-iron, with a smattering of silicon, catalyzed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamonds-can-be-grown-in-a-lab-in-less-than-3-hours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">growth</a> of diamonds most efficiently.</p>



<p>Even more impressive was that diamonds appeared at the base of the crucible within 15 minutes, and a more complete diamond film formed within two and a half hours.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-diamond-formation">Mystery of diamond formation</h2>



<p>The actual mechanism that leads to diamond formation deep within the Earth isn't yet completely understood.</p>



<p>However, the researchers believe that a decrease in temperature helps drive the carbon from the methane towards the center of the crucible, where it coalesces into a diamond.</p>



<p>The process seems reliant on silicon. Without it, no diamonds could be formed, indicating the crucial role it plays as a seed for the carbon to crystallize around.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-of-the-new-technique">Limitations of the new technique</h2>



<p>Despite these thrilling advancements, the new technique isn't without its own limitations. </p>



<p>The diamonds produced using this method are minuscule, hundreds of thousands of times smaller than those grown with the HPHT method. Hence, these diamonds are far too small for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/revolutionary-process-turns-carbon-emissions-into-diamonds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jewelry</a> applications.</p>



<p>However, their use in technological applications, such as drilling or polishing, is a possibility. Due to the low pressure involved in the new method, it might be feasible to significantly scale up diamond synthesis.</p>



<p>"In about a year or two, the world might have a clearer picture of things like possible commercial impact," Rodney Ruoff predicts optimistically. </p>



<p>This breakthrough is a remarkable reflection of the unceasing quest for innovation that pushes the boundaries, and redefines the possible.</p>



<p>The intriguing discovery may even hint at an exciting new chapter in the evolving story of synthetic gems, one that could reshape their production and applications. Only time will tell how far this innovation will take us.</p>

<p>At the age of 74, parenting can be quite the adventure. But for one venerable albatross named Wisdom, it seems the journey is just beginning anew. </p>



<p>Surprisingly, Wisdom is now in the process of becoming a mother yet again - a feat that sets her apart as the oldest known bird in the world to breed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-windy-home-of-the-oldest-bird">Windy home of the oldest bird</h2>



<p>The scene takes place on Midway Atoll, near Hawaii. Each year, this location brims with the arrival of multitudes of spectacular <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-are-moving-north-and-breeding-earlier-in-a-changing-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seabirds</a> known as Laysan albatrosses.</p>



<p>Among them has been Wisdom, returning annually to nest. For decades, she was inseparable from her partner. They were monogamous, much like the rest of their kind. Over the course of her life, Wisdom has laid over 50 eggs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wisdom-s-new-lease-on-life">Wisdom's new lease on life</h2>



<p>In an unexpected turn of events, Wisdom's partner sadly vanished. Unfazed by this change, the elderly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-winds-make-it-difficult-for-albatrosses-to-feed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">albatross</a> adapted and started to court other males. </p>



<p>Wisdom's current visit to the atoll was marked by her laying another egg, and she has a new partner with whom to share the incubation duties.</p>



<p>"We are optimistic that the egg will hatch," expressed Jonathan Plissner, a supervisory wildlife biologist at <a href="https://www.fws.gov/refuge/midway-atoll" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wisdom-the-world-s-oldest-breeding-bird">Wisdom: The world's oldest breeding bird</h2>



<p>This new chapter in Wisdom's life was beautifully captured in photographs and video by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.</p>



<p>They depict the excited parents-to-be, seemingly communicating with their egg, before the male takes over incubation duty.</p>



<p>Tagged and identified back in 1956 when she was laying her first egg at the refuge, Wisdom was no less than five years old at the time - the age at which Laysan albatrosses reach sexual maturity.</p>



<p>Taking these facts into account, it is clear that Wisdom is at least 74 years old.</p>

<p>Laysan albatrosses are named after Laysan Island, one of their primary nesting sites within the Hawaiian Archipelago.</p>



<p>These birds exhibit incredible site fidelity, often returning to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oldest-known-wild-albatross-mother/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breed</a> at the exact location where they were hatched. The species plays a critical role in the marine ecosystem, acting as indicators of ocean health due to their reliance on marine food sources like squid and fish.</p>



<p>These albatrosses are known for their elaborate courtship dances, which involve a series of coordinated movements, calls, and gestures. The ritual helps strengthen the bond between mating pairs. </p>



<p>Laysan albatrosses also possess a unique adaptation - a specialized gland located above their eyes that helps them excrete excess salt from the seawater they drink, thus enabling them to thrive in their marine habitat.</p>



<p>Despite their resilience, Laysan albatross populations face threats from plastic pollution, longline fishing, and invasive predators at nesting sites. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-extinctions-shatter-the-harmonious-balance-of-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Conservation efforts</a>, such as habitat restoration and reducing bycatch in fishing operations, are crucial for ensuring their survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extraordinary-journeys-of-albatrosses">Extraordinary journeys of albatrosses</h2>



<p>Laysan albatrosses are quite remarkable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-sea-ice-makes-it-harder-for-seabirds-to-find-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creatures</a>. They have a wingspan stretching up to 80 inches and can travel over 930 miles in search of food.</p>



<p>Not only that, there are over a dozen species of albatross spanning locations from the Southern Hemisphere to the North Pacific Ocean.</p>



<p>Birds' lifespans can differ considerably based on their species. The smaller ones tend to reach only two to three years in age, whereas seabirds such as albatrosses and penguins can live up to 40 or 50 years.</p>



<p>Wisdom's age, however, surpasses all of these, making her an exceptional figure in the natural world.</p>

<p>Friendships are a cornerstone of human social dynamics, often influenced by shared personalities and mutual interests. However, how animals like buffalos choose their companions remains less understood. </p>



<p>A new study by researchers at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) sheds light on this question. The team examined a unique free-ranging feral population of water buffalo on Lantau Island in Hong Kong.</p>



<p>The findings reveal that spatial proximity is a strong indicator of buffalo friendships, influenced by certain shared personality traits.</p>

<p>"Our research provides evidence that friendships among water <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-animal-day-2024-building-a-legacy-of-compassion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">buffalo</a> can form among individuals with similar behaviors. These findings offer valuable insights into the evolution of friendships," said Dr. Debottam Bhattacharjee, a Postdoc in CityUHK’s <a href="https://www.cityu.edu.hk/ph/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health</a>.</p>



<p>"Personalities and social relationships will be potentially important for understanding how buffalo use their habitats during different seasons (wet and dry) of the year with fluctuating food resources."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-buffalo-friends-and-spatial-associations">Buffalo friends and spatial associations </h2>



<p>The study reveals that female buffalo with similar personalities tend to exhibit higher spatial associations. These individuals spend more time in close proximity during activities like foraging, collective movement, and resting.</p>



<p>The observational studies focused on female buffalo who displayed similar personality traits. These traits, described as repeatable behavioral variables, included social tension, vigilance, and general dominance.</p>



<p>Professor Alan McElligott, a co-author of the study and an expert on animal behavior and welfare at CityUHK, explained how these traits were assessed:</p>

<li><strong>Social tension:</strong>&nbsp;How buffalo approached and avoided each other.</li>



<li><strong>Vigilance:</strong>&nbsp;How they sat and moved around.</li>



<li><strong>General dominance:</strong>&nbsp;How they responded to others in the herd.</li>

<p>First, previous research - mostly conducted in captivity - has highlighted buffalo’s social complexity, marked by affiliated behaviors and dominance hierarchies.</p>



<p>Second, understanding these behaviors in natural settings provides valuable insights for improving the welfare and health of buffalo populations.</p>



<p>"Moreover, understanding social behaviors and friendships of group living animals like buffalo improves welfare with broader implications for maintaining optimal health of those within the wider population," noted Professor Kate Flay from CityUHK’s <a href="https://www.cityu.edu.hk/pg/department/vcs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences</a>.</p>

<p>Another noteworthy aspect is the role of vocal communication. While the study primarily focused on spatial proximity, field observations revealed that buffalo frequently used low-frequency calls to maintain contact with their preferred companions when separated by distance. <p>The influence of predators also shaped buffalo friendships. Herd members who maintained strong friendships were more likely to engage in collective vigilance, enhancing their chances of detecting and escaping threats. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
