<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Pompeii's eruption in 79 AD was a catastrophic event that changed the course of history and left an indelible mark on human civilization. </p>



<p>The violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius transformed the once bustling Roman city into a graveyard. Most of its inhabitants met a gruesome end, buried alive under a lethal rain of lapilli - small stones and ash.</p>



<p>The few who managed to escape the initial onslaught were ultimately overtaken by deadly pyroclastic flows. </p>



<p>This high-speed avalanche of superheated gas and volcanic matter sealed them in a solid ash layer, preserving their bodies - and, quite paradoxically, their life stories - for posterity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-assumptions-about-pompeii-victims">Assumptions about Pompeii victims</h2>



<p>Historically, the lives of these Pompeiians were narrated through plaster casts made from the hollows left by the many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vulture-bees-have-acquired-a-taste-for-dead-bodies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decaying bodies</a>. This gave birth to countless assumptions about the victims, their relationships, and their lives.</p>



<p>However, an international team led by scientists at Harvard Medical School, the University of Florence, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology embarked on a journey to dispel some of these assumptions and bring to light the true stories of these ancient city dwellers.</p>



<p>The scientists painstakingly extracted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-can-now-collect-human-dna-from-water-air-and-basically-everywhere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a> samples from the fragmented skeletal remains found in 14 of 86 famous casts. This novel approach allowed them to re-evaluate established beliefs and narratives.</p>



<p>Their findings challenged many previously held assumptions about the Pompeii victims that were based solely on physical appearances and the positioning of the casts. This has helped illuminate certain complexities of the ancient civilization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-findings-from-the-dna-extraction">Findings from the DNA extraction</h2>



<p>Professor David Caramelli, an expert in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florence, highlighted the monumental impact of this research.</p>



<p>"This research shows how genetic analysis can significantly add to the stories constructed from archaeological data," said Professor Caramelli. </p>



<p>He noted that the findings challenge enduring notions such as the association of jewelery with femininity or the interpretation of physical proximity as evidence of familial relationships.</p>



<p>"Moreover, the genetic evidence adds a layer of complexity to simple kinship narratives. For example, in the&nbsp;<em>House of the Golden Bracelet</em>, the only site where we have genetic information from multiple individuals, the four people traditionally thought to be the two parents and their children actually have no genetic ties to each other."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unanticipated-relationships-of-pompeii-victims">Unanticipated relationships of Pompeii victims</h2>



<p>Remarkably, the research also sheds light on unexpected relationship dynamics, which were far from mainstream narratives.</p>



<p>The team's findings not only challenged traditional gender and familial assumptions, but also shed light on some unexpected relationships. </p>



<p>“The scientific data we provide do not always align with common assumptions," stated co-senior author&nbsp;<a href="https://reich.hms.harvard.edu/">David Reich</a>, professor of genetics in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS and professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University. </p>



<p>"For instance, one notable example is the discovery that an adult wearing a golden bracelet and holding a child, traditionally interpreted as a mother and child, were an unrelated adult male and child." </p>



<p>"Similarly, a pair of individuals thought to be sisters, or mother and daughter, were found to include at least one genetic male. These findings challenge traditional gender and familial assumptions," stressed Reich.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-true-nature-of-the-roman-empire">The true nature of the Roman Empire</h2>



<p>The scientists discovered that the inhabitants of Pompeii were descendants of recent immigrants who came mainly from the eastern Mediterranean.</p>



<p> “Our findings have significant implications for the interpretation of archaeological data and the understanding of ancient societies," explained Alissa Mittnik of the <a href="https://www.eva.mpg.de/index/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</a> </p>



<p>"They highlight the importance of integrating genetic data with archaeological and historical information to avoid misinterpretations based on modern assumptions."</p>



<p>"This study also underscores the diverse and cosmopolitan nature of Pompeii’s population, reflecting broader patterns of mobility and cultural exchange in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/using-ai-to-decode-the-legacy-of-the-roman-empire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman Empire</a>," she added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-the-story-of-pompeii-s-eruption">Beyond the story of Pompeii's eruption</h2>



<p>This novel research is just the beginning of a new perspective, where the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tragic-end-of-pompeii-was-not-solely-caused-by-mount-vesuvius/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">site of Pompeii</a> itself plays a central role in advancing archaeological studies and methodologies.</p>



<p>Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of Pompeii Park, explained that the Park oversees a range of research projects through its laboratory, encompassing isotopic analysis, diagnostics, geology, volcanology, and reverse engineering. </p>



<p>"The Pompeii Park has been including ancient DNA analysis in its study protocols for years, not only for human victims, but also for animal victims."</p>



<p>"All these elements together contribute to a comprehensive, updated interpretation of the archaeological findings," Zuchtriegel stated, emphasizing that these efforts position Pompeii as an incubator for new methods and scientific innovation. </p>



<p>"From this point of view, this study marks a true change in perspective, in which the site itself plays a central role in advancing archaeology and research," he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-past-civilizations">Understanding past civilizations</h2>



<p>By successfully integrating novel genetic data with traditional archaeological methods, we can now look beyond the surface and challenge established narratives. </p>



<p>“Instead of establishing new narratives that might also misrepresent these people’s experiences, the genetic results encourage reflection on the dangers of making up stories about gender and family relationships in past societies based on present-day expectations,” said Reich.</p>



<p>This revolutionary approach thus potentially reshapes our understanding of past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-calendar-discovery-could-rewrite-history-of-civilization/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">civilizations</a>, giving us a fresh and more authentic understanding of our shared human history.</p>

DNA evidence reveals new clues about Pompeii's eruption victims

<p>The seasonal flu places a significant burden on healthcare systems globally, leading to over five million hospitalizations annually. </p>



<p>Current influenza vaccine development relies on monitoring circulating strains that migrate across continents, requiring comprehensive surveillance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diet-quality-briefly-improved-during-the-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19 pandemic</a>’s unprecedented reduction in global travel provided a unique window for scientists to assess how restricted movement influenced the behavior and evolution of seasonal influenza.</p>



<p>In a new study, an international team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>, <a href="https://www.fudan.edu.cn/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fudan University</a>, and <a href="https://www.kuleuven.be/english/kuleuven" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KU Leuven</a> analyzed data on the spread and genetics of seasonal influenza alongside international travel patterns. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This study explored how long influenza viruses stayed within particular regions during restricted and unrestricted travel periods, shedding light on the diversity of flu strains before, during, and after the pandemic.</p>



<p>“During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonpharmaceutical interventions were introduced worldwide, which led to human behavioral changes on an unprecedented scale,” noted the study authors.</p>



<p>“This led to a decline in the global prevalence of endemic respiratory pathogens, including seasonal influenza subtypes H1N1pdm09 and H3N2 and lineages B/Victoria and B/Yamagata.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reduced-influenza-levels-and-diversity">Reduced influenza levels and diversity</h2>



<p>When <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/omicron-is-much-more-deadly-than-the-seasonal-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19</a> pandemic-related travel restrictions were enforced worldwide, cases of seasonal influenza declined sharply due to less movement and fewer social interactions. </p>



<p>Yet, influenza levels rebounded rapidly as international travel resumed. The virus, despite its temporary dip in cases, was maintained in circulation and continued to evolve genetically.</p>



<p>“It was remarkable how quickly seasonal flu re-established to a pre-pandemic equilibrium just a few years after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said lead author Zhiyuan Chen, a scientist at the University of Oxford and Fudan University.</p>



<p>This bounce-back revealed that, although COVID-19 measures temporarily slowed influenza spread, the virus was preserved within certain regions and resumed its typical patterns once movement restrictions eased.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-variations-and-flu-transmission">Climate variations and flu transmission</h2>



<p>Tropical regions, particularly in South and East Asia, support year-round flu transmission due to their climates, which fosters a greater diversity of influenza strains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>During the pandemic, increased genomic surveillance capacity enabled scientists to better understand the role of various regions, including Africa and West Asia, in flu’s global circulation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These areas, with fewer restrictions and relatively low COVID-19 spread, contributed to sustained flu transmission.</p>



<p>“Increased genomic surveillance capacity established during the COVID-19 pandemic means that we are finally getting a deeper insight into the global distribution patterns of seasonal flu and other respiratory viruses,” explained Kraemer.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-co-circulating-viruses-and-human-behavior">Climate, co-circulating viruses, and human behavior</h2>



<p>Study co-author Moritz Kraemer is an expert in the Department of Biology and the Pandemic Sciences Institute at the University of Oxford.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“These novel and large openly accessible datasets provide an opportunity to learn about the intricate relationships of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-unleashing-ancient-zombie-viruses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>, co-circulating viruses, and human behavior.”</p>



<p>With improved global genomic surveillance now in place, scientists have a new opportunity to track the evolution of seasonal flu and its global migration patterns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This deeper understanding may reduce the risk of vaccine mismatches, making it possible to tailor interventions and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-vaccination-reduces-mortality-risk-but-only-for-6-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaccines</a> more effectively, which could ultimately alleviate the healthcare burden of seasonal influenza. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-flu-transmission-nbsp">Climate change and flu transmission&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The goal becomes increasingly relevant as climate change makes more regions suitable for flu transmission throughout the year.</p>



<p>“Further efforts should still focus on the continuing surveillance of seasonal influenza viruses and other respiratory pathogens, particularly in resource-limited regions,” noted Hongjie Yu from Fudan University.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The established surveillance systems for seasonal respiratory pathogens could also play an extremely vital role when the next pandemic emerges in the future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-respiratory-viruses-nbsp">Understanding respiratory viruses&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As climate conditions shift and the possibility of year-round influenza transmission in previously unsuitable areas grows, continued focus on influenza surveillance and response remains essential.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Increased monitoring in regions with limited resources, combined with these new datasets, equips health systems to respond proactively.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This progress in understanding the interplay between climate, global travel, and respiratory <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-can-hide-in-lung-cells-and-cause-chronic-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a> may prove instrumental in managing both seasonal influenza and future pandemics.</p>

<p>A year after an unprecedented outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza swept through elephant seal breeding grounds on Península Valdés in Argentina, the beaches are quieter, and the normally bustling colonies have drastically diminished.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The bird flu outbreak, which killed over 17,000 elephant seals, including almost 97% of the pups, has left a scar on this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elephant-seals-have-genetic-scars-from-intense-hunting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vulnerable population</a>, with only about a third of the seals typically expected here returning.</p>



<p>“It’s beautiful to walk the beaches now and hear elephant seals again,” said Marcela Uhart, director of the Latin America Program at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">UC Davis</a> Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“At the same time, we’re walking among piles of carcasses and bones, and seeing very few elephant seal harems, so it’s still disturbing.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammal-to-mammal-transmission-of-bird-flu">Mammal-to-mammal transmission of bird flu</h2>



<p>A study published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-53766-5"><em>Nature Communications</em></a>, co-led by scientists from UC Davis and Argentina’s <a href="http://inta.gob.ar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institute of Agricultural Technology</a> (INTA), sheds light on how H5N1 spread among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-influenza-h5n1-marine-mammals-spreading-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine mammals</a> during the 2023 outbreak.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research provides critical evidence that H5N1 was able to transmit from one marine mammal to another, efficiently infecting the seals in what became a devastating event across southern South America.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-the-bird-flu-virus">Evolution of the bird flu virus</h2>



<p>Genomic analysis revealed that, upon its arrival in South America, the virus branched into separate strains: one adapted to avian hosts and another to marine mammals - an unprecedented shift.</p>



<p>“We’re showing the evolution of H5N1 viruses that belong to genotype B3.2 over time since their introduction in South America in late 2022,” said co-lead author Agustina Rimondi, a scientist at INTA and the <a href="https://www.rki.de/EN/Home/homepage_node.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Robert Koch Institute</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This virus is capable of adapting to marine mammal species, as we can see from the mutations that are consistently found in the viruses belonging to this clade.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Very importantly, our study also shows that H5 marine mammal viruses are able to jump back to birds, highlighting the need for increased surveillance and research cooperation in the region.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elephant-seal-population-hit-hard-by-bird-flu">Elephant seal population hit hard by bird flu</h2>



<p>To gauge the full extent of the impact, the <a href="https://www.wcs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wildlife Conservation Society</a> (WCS) in Argentina has been monitoring the seal population as part of a long-term conservation effort. The losses are staggering.</p>



<p>“It is likely that more than half of the reproductive population died due to the virus. It will take decades before the numbers are back to the 2022 population size,” said WCS Argentina director of coastal and marine conservation Valeria Falabella.</p>



<p>The effects of the outbreak have undone decades of conservation progress, Falabella added, as the virus claimed many of the species’ most fertile females and dominant males. This loss of reproductive individuals will have long-term consequences for the population’s recovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-efforts-and-lingering-questions">Monitoring efforts and lingering questions</h2>



<p>Tracking H5N1 among elephant seals has become an essential task for scientists. WCS Argentina’s monitoring program is working in tandem with the UC Davis team, which documents and tests any animals that die, while INTA conducts the testing and genomic sequencing of samples.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As of now, no elephant seals have tested positive for bird flu in the new breeding season, though scientists are left with numerous questions from last year’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/efforts-to-control-bird-flu-are-not-working-are-humans-next/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outbreak</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Experts still do not know how the virus was primarily transmitted among seals - whether through aerosols, saliva, feces, or another means - and whether surviving seals may have developed protective antibodies.</p>



<p>Outside of Argentina, the virus has continued to wreak havoc across bird populations and livestock.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the United States, H5N1 has spread beyond birds, reaching dairy cows and recently even swine, according to a <a href="https://www.usda.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Agriculture</a> report from October. To date, there is no known human-to-human transmission of the virus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-spread-and-impact-of-bird-flu">Global spread and impact of bird flu</h2>



<p>The H5N1 variant clade 2.3.4.4b began its spread in 2020, around the same time as the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>



<p>First, the outbreak killed tens of thousands of seabirds in Europe before reaching South Africa, North America, and eventually South America in late 2022. H5N1 was detected in Argentina in early 2023, primarily affecting inland poultry farms. </p>



<p>However, by mid-2023, the virus had moved to sea lions near Tierra del Fuego and then quickly progressed northward, bringing deadly consequences for both marine mammals and seabirds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mass-mortality-of-elephant-seals">Mass mortality of elephant seals</h2>



<p>By October 2023, elephant seal colonies at Punta Delgada on Península Valdés witnessed mass mortality, which researchers found was due to HPAI [highly pathogenic avian influenza] H5N1.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The outbreak had a cascading impact, with other species, like terns, dying in the same region and timeframe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study authors emphasize the critical need for continuous monitoring and deeper research into H5N1’s adaptability across species. Its capacity to infect new hosts could pose broader implications for human health, biodiversity, and ecosystems.</p>

Elephant seal colony lost 95% of its pups to bird flu

A year after an unprecedented outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza...

<p>The frogs residing in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone appear remarkably unaffected by radiation when it comes to their age and rate of aging. </p>



<p>A recent study shows no significant differences between frogs living in high-radiation areas and those from non-irradiated control zones regarding these two aging traits. </p>



<p>Additionally, corticosterone levels - a hormone related to stress response - are consistent across frogs regardless of the radiation levels they’re exposed to.</p>



<p>These findings, from a study led by the <a href="https://www.uniovi.es/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oviedo</a> and the <a href="https://www.ebd.csic.es/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Doñana Biological Station-CSIC</a>, mark the first analysis on the long-term effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-wolves-have-evolved-resistance-to-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chernobyl</a>’s radiation on the age and aging rate of local wildlife.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Germán Orizaola, a zoology professor at the University of Oviedo, “the levels of radiation currently experienced by frogs in Chernobyl would not be sufficient to cause chronic damage to these organisms.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chernobyl-as-a-potential-wildlife-refuge">Chernobyl as a potential wildlife refuge</h2>



<p>This study highlights the need for comprehensive analysis of radiation’s long-term effects on biological traits like age and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-25-years-of-research-revealed-about-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> rate to accurately assess the current environmental impact of the Chernobyl disaster.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Orizaola notes that the results support the idea that Chernobyl now serves as a refuge for wildlife that should be protected.</p>



<p>Nearly 40 years have passed since the 1986 meltdown at Chernobyl’s reactor 4, during which <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-is-teeming-with-worms-resistant-to-radiation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radiation</a> levels have substantially declined in the initially affected zones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Experts estimate that less than 10% of the original radiation remains. Isotopes such as iodine, which posed significant danger after the accident, disappeared within months.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This sharp reduction in radiation has allowed the area to become one of Europe’s largest natural reserves, prompting scientists to carefully examine its lingering impact on the local environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-impacts-of-radiation-on-aging">Long-term impacts of radiation on aging</h2>



<p>Led by Orizaola, the research team began studying Chernobyl’s wildlife in 2016, with a focus on animal populations in the exclusion zone, especially amphibians like the eastern tree frog (<em>Hyla orientalis</em>).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Past research by this group revealed no detectable impacts from current radiation levels on various health-related physiological and morphological parameters in this species.</p>



<p>In the current study, scientists extended their focus to the age and aging rate of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-frog-day-addressing-environmental-threats-to-frogs/">frogs</a>, hoping to detect any cumulative radiation damage over the animals' lifespans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding the long-term impact of radiation on aging is crucial, as it reflects how radiation exposure might accumulate and affect organisms over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The fieldwork, conducted with Pablo Burraco of the Doñana Biological Station, spanned three research trips to Ukraine between 2016 and 2018.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-radiation-exposure-in-frogs">Measuring radiation<strong> exposure </strong>in frogs</h2>



<p>The researchers sampled frog populations across the gradient of radiation exposure present in the area, including locations with some of the highest radioactive contamination in the world and areas with no contamination.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They captured over 200 male frogs from 14 different sites and transported them to their field laboratory in Chernobyl city.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In all the frogs, we calculated the level of radiation absorbed based on the environmental radiation and the cesium content in their muscles and strontium in their bones,” noted Burraco.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This has been one of the most precise assessments of absorbed radiation carried out on a vertebrate in Chernobyl.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calculating-frog-age-using-growth-lines">Calculating frog age using growth lines</h2>



<p>The researchers used growth lines in frog bones, much like counting tree rings, to determine each frog’s age. To analyze aging rates, they measured the frogs' telomere lengths.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Telomeres, DNA sequences located at chromosome ends, protect genetic material and shorten with each cell division - a process associated with aging. Corticosterone levels were also measured to assess each frog’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-eats-away-our-brains-cognitive-defenses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> response, providing another data point in the research.</p>



<p>This study’s findings suggest that frogs in Chernobyl’s exclusion zone have adapted to the radiation levels present without significant effects on their aging processes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research contributes valuable knowledge to ongoing research into Chernobyl’s wildlife, reinforcing the importance of the exclusion zone as a wildlife refuge and emphasizing the resilience of some species in radiation-exposed environments.</p>

<p>The PROBA-3 mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) is designed to explore and study the sun in unique ways. </p>



<p>It consists of two small satellites - the Occulter and the Coronagraph - that will work together to create a giant, space-based solar coronagraph. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viewing-the-sun-in-unprecedented-detail">Viewing the Sun in unprecedented detail </h2>



<p>The spacecraft aims to capture the sun's faint ambiance while enduring the intense heat of the solar disk.</p>



<p>By positioning one satellite to block the Sun's direct light, the other can capture images of the solar corona, allowing scientists to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere in unprecedented detail.</p>



<p>The sun-facing side of the Occulter is equipped with a unique instrument to continuously measure the sun's total energy output, also known as total solar irradiance. This is a crucial variable for climate studies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proba-3-s-mighty-radiometer">Proba-3’s mighty radiometer</h2>



<p>The key instrument is the Swiss-made, shoebox-sized Davos Absolute Radiometer or DARA, procured from the <a href="https://www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/about-us/research-and-cooperation/international-cooperation/pmod-wrc.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Physical Meteorological Observatory Davos</a> (PMOD).</p>



<p>The question arises, why is it so important to keep track of the total solar irradiance? Wolfgang Finsterle, DARA Principal Investigator at PMOD, elaborated on this question. </p>



<p>“Researchers used to talk about the ‘solar constant’ but in fact it is always changing slightly. And it’s essential to keep track of the total solar irradiance, because it is the dominant energy input to the surface of the Earth," noted Finsterle.</p>



<p>"It amounts to something like 99.978% of the energy available on Earth, including the conserved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/suns-fury-secrets-of-solar-energy-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar energy</a> stored in coal and oil. It drives all the dynamic processes of Earth’s climate, so even the tiniest variations are hugely significant."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-the-sun-s-energy-output">Measuring the Sun's energy output</h2>



<p>Having studied total solar irradiance for over a century, PMOD began with ground-based instruments and later escalated to deploying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-based-data-centers-could-transform-satellite-capabilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space-based</a> radiometers in the 1970s, to maintain a continuous dataset. </p>



<p>The noble endeavor earned PMOD the title of World Radiation Centre from the World Meteorological Organization to calibrate radiation measurements across global UN monitoring programs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-proba-3-s-dara-works">How Proba-3's DARA works</h2>



<p>DARA’s basic operating principle can be easily understood, but its execution showcases sophisticated engineering tailored for precision.</p>



<p>It has a 5-mm diameter cavity made from black-painted silver, which is known for its low temperature emissivity and high absorption efficiency.</p>



<p>Sunlight warms the cavity's interior for 15 seconds, then a shutter automatically closes at its entrance. </p>



<p>For the next 15 seconds, electric heat maintains the cavity’s previous temperature, and this energy is extrapolated to the unit of total solar irradiance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-possibilities-with-dara">New possibilities with DARA</h2>



<p>The new and improved DARA is ready to embark on a lifetime journey with Proba-3, ensuring millions of opening and closings, as proven in PMOD’s vacuum chamber tests. </p>



<p>“DARA is an improvement on previous radiometer designs with an optimized cavity design to minimize unwanted straylight and a multi-channel measuring system for self-calibration," noted Finsterle.</p>



<p>"This generation of instrument also possesses a fully digital control loop, allowing the possibility of experimenting with higher frequency observations."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proba-3-s-unique-orbit">Proba-3's unique orbit</h2>



<p>The main difference that sets Proba-3's DARA apart is its elongated orbit that will propel it 60,000 km above the Earth's surface.</p>



<p>It can adjust to slight changes in the solar disk's size based on its distance from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/see-the-sun-in-exquisite-detail-in-rare-solar-orbiter-video/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>, which changes during Earth's annual elliptical orbit. </p>



<p>All the radiometer needs to know is its position in space, and its data gathering compensates for the shift.</p>



<p>In the end, Proba-3’s journey will offer us new insights into the sun's energy outputs and the influences they have on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-clouds-influence-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's climate</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proba-3-s-optimal-view-of-the-sun">Proba-3’s optimal view of the Sun</h2>



<p>One of the standout aspects of Proba-3's mission is its unique orbit. Unlike typical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burning-up-of-satellites-severely-harms-ozone-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">low-Earth orbits</a>, Proba-3’s extended trajectory is essential for achieving the mission’s objectives. This specific path enables precise positioning for optimal observation of the Sun.</p>



<p>By positioning itself farther from Earth, Proba-3 can better align its two <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/for-the-very-first-time-a-spacecraft-has-touched-the-sun/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spacecraft</a>, the Occulter and the Coronagraph, to create an artificial solar eclipse. This alignment allows scientists to observe the Sun’s faint corona without interference from its blinding surface light.</p>



<p>Such observations are vital for studying solar winds and their impact on space weather, which can disrupt satellite communications and power grids. </p>

Proba-3: A mission to see the Sun like we've never seen it before

<p>Plants, just like us, want to grow big and strong. But they're constantly under attack by pathogens - tiny organisms that have the power to weaken or even kill plants. This is where the plants' secret agents - "defense genes" - enter the picture.</p>



<p>These genes arm plants with defenses against harmful pathogens. However, this defense network comes at a cost - it saps away the resources the plant could otherwise use for growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-defense-genes-of-plants">Defense genes of plants</h2>



<p>A recent study on defense genes was led by postdoctoral researcher Michael Giolai and Professor Anna-Liisa Laine from the <a href="https://www.helsinki.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Helsinki</a>.</p>



<p>The team analyzed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-absorb-31-more-co2-than-previously-estimated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant</a> defense genes and growth traits across 184 plant species - a feat made possible by the power of open databases.</p>



<p>The researchers found a direct correlation between a plant's investment in defense genes and its ability to grow.</p>



<p>They discovered a broad range of plant defense strategies, from asparagus with just 72 resistance genes to a chili variety with 1,095 of them. </p>



<p>However, the more of a plant's genome that is devoted to defense, the less it grows.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-defense-in-cultivated-plants">Defense in cultivated plants</h2>



<p>Think of the trade-off business like this - every plant has a limited pool of resources (like energy and nutrients) to carry out activities.</p>



<p>The more it dips into this pool to fuel its defense system, the less it has left to spur its growth. But why don't plants just expand their resource pool and do both? Well, that's the revelation - they can't.</p>



<p>However, the researchers found a catch. Cultivated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-shaped-plant-biodiversity-for-thousands-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants that we humans have bred</a> for specific traits in agriculture did not show this correlation between defense and growth.</p>



<p>The experts suspect this might be due to the breeding process, which has reduced natural variation in the genomes of these crop plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-picture">The bigger picture</h2>



<p>But it's not just about a single plant or its struggles. The findings shed light on how allocation costs - the costs associated with this balancing act - play a crucial role in shaping and maintaining biodiversity.</p>



<p>Essentially, these findings help us understand why plants are the way they are and how they have adapted to their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-of-plant-defenses">Complexity of plant defenses</h2>



<p>In exploring these phenomena further, Giolai and Laine highlight the intricate dance between genetic inheritance and environmental demands. </p>



<p>They found that some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vaccinating-plants-could-boost-global-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> exhibit sophisticated strategies to balance their defense and growth, flaunting their evolutionary prowess. </p>



<p>For instance, plants native to harsh or unpredictable environments tend to boast a diverse genetic toolkit, allowing them to switch on specific defense genes only when under threat. This inducible defense strategy ensures they can conserve resources when conditions favor growth. </p>



<p>This adaptive flexibility highlights the evolutionary trade-offs that have fine-tuned plant species to their specific niches, reinforcing the role of natural selection in shaping plant biodiversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-agriculture">Implications for agriculture</h2>



<p>The insights gained from this study offer vital implications for agriculture, particularly in breeding new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-boost-plant-evolution-in-surprising-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant varieties</a>. By understanding the dynamic between defense investment and growth potential, scientists can aim to optimize crop yields while maintaining sufficient resistance to pathogens.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, Giolai and Laine advocate for more studies utilizing large-scale, open-access databases to deepen our understanding of genetic trade-offs in plants further. </p>



<p>They emphasize the need for an interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from genomics, ecology, and evolutionary biology to gain a holistic view of plant adaptations. </p>



<p>Such efforts could pave the way for sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to global food security in an ever-changing climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-open-science">Power of open science</h2>



<p>This research on plants defense genes wouldn't have been possible without open science. Sequencing hundreds of plant genomes and collecting extensive growth data just isn't feasible for a single team.</p>



<p>Open access to such data is enabling scientists to dig deeper into interspecies variations, opening up entirely new levels of inquiry.</p>

Plants have sophisticated strategies to balance defense and growth

<p>Elite sports - it's all about endurance, resilience, and relentless competition, right? But what if coaches threw the concept of compassion into this challenging mix?</p>



<p>Sounds counterintuitive, doesn't it? Struggle and hardship may not seem to blend with warmth and empathy, but that's where a new study begs to differ.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coaches-take-on-compassion">Coaches' take on compassion</h2>



<p>The study argues against the perceived incongruity of compassion in top-level sports. The research probed into the perspectives of 12 coaches regarding the place and role of compassion in their work with elite athletes.</p>



<p>The interesting conclusion? There's a broad agreement among these coaches, most of whom lead national teams, on the value of employing compassion. </p>



<p>Study lead author Emilia Backman is an expert in the Department of Psychology at the <a href="https://www.ku.dk/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Copenhagen</a>.</p>



<p>"All of the high-performance coaches bought into the idea that using compassion has beneficial outcomes in their sporting environments. Many also feel it is something that they already practice in one way or another," said Backman. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compassion-a-vital-tool-for-coaches">Compassion: A vital tool for coaches</h2>



<p>Compassion in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/youth-sports-are-more-accessible-to-privileged-families/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sports</a> is more than just showing empathy. It plays a key psychological role by enabling coaches and others to understand the disappointment and adversities athletes experience and help alleviate their distress.</p>



<p>The study, titled "Compassion matters in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mental-health-issues-are-prevalent-among-elite-athletes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elite sports</a> environments: Insights from high-performance coaches," was focused on interviews with 12 Danish coaches working at the highest level in ten sports.</p>



<p>"With this study, we have therefore moved the focus away from the individual athlete and zoomed out to look at the use of compassion in the entire sporting environment," said Backman. </p>



<p>"The aim has been to explore how it can support athletes, especially in terms of lasting performance enhancement."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-of-compassion-a-coach-s-perspective">Benefits of compassion: A coach's perspective</h2>



<p>During the study, coaches listed multiple benefits of incorporating compassion into their coaching strategies. </p>



<p>Compassion can prevent athletes from overly associating with unfavorable sporting outcomes. It can stimulate a deeper connection and understanding between the coach and athlete.</p>



<p>Compassion promotes unity and collaboration in otherwise competitive sports settings. It also helps coaches gain the trust they need to push athletes towards improved performances</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practicing-compassion-in-sports">Practicing compassion in sports</h2>



<p>Despite acknowledging the merits, many coaches grapple with understanding what compassion implies in practice.</p>



<p>"While all the coaches believed compassion was beneficial for performance, they also expressed uncertainty on how and when to utilize compassion, indicating a need to find balance between support and challenge," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Backman emphasizes the importance of using compassion as an adaptable tool for different sporting contexts and situations.</p>



<p>"Sometimes the compassionate thing to do is to be able to push your athletes. The difficult aspect of that, like some of the coaches also mentioned, is finding this balance of doing one or the other."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-stereotype-compassion-as-softness">The stereotype: Compassion as softness</h2>



<p>Backman also challenges the associated perception of compassion as a form of "softness" that could potentially breed complacent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/watching-the-olympics-can-help-you-lose-weight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">athletes</a>.</p>



<p>"To act compassionately really requires wisdom, strength and commitment - and these are not soft values in my opinion," said Backman. </p>



<p>"So even though compassion focuses on the more emotional aspects, I don’t think it is easy or 'soft' to incorporate. And it is not incompatible with sporting performance."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emphasizing-the-well-being-of-athletes">Emphasizing the well-being of athletes</h2>



<p>Some coaches worry about situations where compassion may seem misplaced. Backman emphasized that it's possible to maintain a compassionate approach even during difficult conversations, respecting athletes and considering their perspectives.</p>



<p>"It's definitely a contradiction in the sense that compassion typically focuses more on improving well-being and not so much on performance. But as said, the two things don't have to be opposites," noted Backman.</p>



<p>Her hope lies in embedding compassion knowledge into more training programs. </p>



<p>"I sense that sports organizations, at least in Denmark, are moving in a direction where they put even more emphasis on the well-being of their athletes," said Backman.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>The study authors noted that future research should investigate the outcomes and consequences of compassion by using methods to investigate the impact of compassionate coaching over time. </p>



<p>"Furthermore, research in more naturalistic settings, such as training and competitions, could elucidate the role of compassion on an interpersonal and environmental level within the elite sport context."</p>



<p>Who said sports couldn't be compassionate? The playing field is gradually changing, and we may yet see a kinder, more empathetic world in elite sports.</p>

Coaches who show compassion help athletes perform better

Elite sports - it's all about endurance, resilience, and relentless...

<p>In November, the United Nations Climate Change Conference is set to commence. The spotlight will shine brightly on one contentious issue: the negotiation of new payments from industrialized nations to their less affluent counterparts - especially using profits from oil and gas companies. </p>



<p>The debate on the financing of these payments is, to put it mildly, a heated one. But now, a revelation from a study led by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) could change everything.</p>



<p>It turns out, the windfall profits raked in by oil and gas companies during the energy crisis of 2022 were enough to fulfill the existing commitments of industrialized nations for almost five years. The researchers' solution? A tax on these so-called windfall profits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oil-profits-bridge-the-funding-gap">Oil profits bridge the funding gap</h2>



<p>The funding for climate targets is a key item on the agenda at the forthcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29). </p>



<p>Industrialized nations had pledged annually $100 billion from 2020 to 2025 to assist less developed countries in climate protection initiatives and adaptation to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-diversity-takes-a-hard-hit-near-offshore-platforms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. However, the promised funds have not fully been delivered. </p>



<p>This leads us to the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), a follow-up agreement set to be passed. The NCQG commits to additional funding, yet there is no clarity on sourcing these funds. So, what do we do? </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-windfall-profit-tax">Windfall profit tax</h2>



<p>One proposed solution under consideration is a tax on windfall profits of companies dealing in fossil fuels. </p>



<p>A windfall profit tax imposes a levy on profits that exceed normal expectations during a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crisis</a>. Think of it as a situation where the companies hit the jackpot owing to the crisis. </p>



<p>Taking the energy crisis following Russia's attack on Ukraine in 2022 as an example, international energy prices rocketed sky-high.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-oil-and-gas-profits">Using oil and gas profits</h2>



<p>The research team meticulously scrutinized the profits reported by 93 of the world's largest oil and gas companies for 2022, and compared them with the analysts' predictions at the beginning of the year. </p>



<p>The figures are staggering. The projected profits were about $753 billion. However, the actual profits earned exceeded this by a whopping $490 billion, totaling around $1.243 trillion. </p>



<p>“These additional profits from just one year are close to the total amount promised to the poorer countries for a five-year period,” noted study leader Florian Egli, professor of Public Policy for the Green Transition at <a href="https://www.tum.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TUM</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-it-plausible">Is it plausible?</h2>



<p>To consider the feasibility of redistributing these excess profits, the research team acknowledged the domicile countries of these companies and whether they were state-owned or private entities. </p>



<p>A remarkable 42% of these windfall profits were reported by state-run companies, with the lion's share originating from Norway. </p>



<p>“The governments have the ability to take direct action to skim off the profits earned due to a crisis and use them to fight the climate crisis,” said Dr. Anna Stünzi of the <a href="https://www.unisg.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St. Gallen</a>.</p>



<p>On the other hand, the private enterprises that garnered windfall profits, which is a whopping 95%, were headquartered in nations that pledged towards <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/report-earth-is-headed-for-an-irreversible-climate-disaster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> protection funding.</p>



<p>“With a tax on windfall profits from oil and gas, at least some industrialized countries could generate income to meet their commitments to the poorer countries,” said Professor Egli.</p>



<p>It is important to note that companies in the United States, the UK, France, and Canada collectively accounted for about half of these profits. Almost all of these companies are based in G20 countries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-oil-profits-fund-climate-solutions">Can oil profits fund climate solutions?</h2>



<p>Global greenhouse gas emissions are predominantly linked to burning oil and gas. Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry continues to rake in substantial profits.</p>



<p>“More than half of the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions result from the burning of oil and gas. At the same time, the oil and gas industry has been one of the most profitable sectors for a long time,” said Professor Egli.</p>



<p>“It would undoubtedly be hard to reach an international agreement to tax these profits. But the agreement on a global minimum tax rate for companies, reached by more than 130 countries in 2023 under the auspices of the OECD and G20, could be a role model.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oil-profits-drive-clean-energy">Oil profits drive clean energy</h2>



<p>The worldwide profits of oil and gas the industry are larger than those acknowledged in this study. </p>



<p>Some of the industry giants - such as those in Russia, Iran, South Africa and Venezuela - do not disclose their figures and therefore, were not encompassed in the study.</p>



<p>“Taxing superprofits could tamper and phase down investment in oil and gas, building a stable and efficient clean energy market and helping to align financial flows with the goals of the <a href="https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paris Agreement</a>,” noted Michael Grubb, professor at University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>).</p>



<p>“The reorientation of fossil fuel revenues for consistency with climate goals should be next on the global agenda.”</p>

<p>A significant study has demystified this puzzle, revealing the discrete genetic triggers that govern these fascinating colorations.</p>



<p>The study unveils how the long-tailed finch's red and yellow bill colors sprouted from slight changes in a few <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finch-beaks-and-bird-songs-a-new-story-of-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vital genes</a>. </p>



<p>The genes are intricately involved in how birds process dietary yellow pigments. This discovery opens an exciting chapter in our understanding of natural coloration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-the-bills-of-australian-finches">Observing the bills of Australian finches</h2>



<p>The species under investigation, the long-tailed finch, is endemic to Australia. Conducted by experts from eight institutions across five countries, this research peels back layers on the genetic makeup of these captivating creatures.</p>



<p>"Modern genomic techniques provide us with incredible insight into how relatively subtle genetic changes can lead to profound changes in things like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zebra-finch-female-birds-choose-mates-who-can-sing-most-complex-songs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal color</a>," said study senior author Professor Simon Griffith from Macquarie University's <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/faculty-of-science-and-engineering/departments-and-schools/school-of-natural-sciences" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Natural Sciences</a>.</p>



<p>The study was focused on two subspecies of the long-tailed finch. One flaunts a yellow bill and calls the Kimberley region of Western Australia home while its counterpart with a red bill hails from the Northern Territory. </p>



<p>In the event of these subspecies mating, they yield hybrid offspring adorned with orange bills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bill-colors-of-australian-finches">Bill colors of Australian finches </h2>



<p>The red-billed finches owe their crimson "smile" to carotenoid pigments, sourced from the seeds they munch. Through the course of their lives, they create enzymes that alter the yellow pigments from their dietary intake into the red pigment deposited in their growing bills.</p>



<p>The spectrum of eye-catching bill colors among the Finch family results from the genetic variations that halt this color conversion.</p>



<p>"This discovery helps us understand how animals can evolve different color signals, contributing to the amazing colors of nature," said Professor Griffith.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-natural-selection">The role of natural selection</h2>



<p>The study suggests that the yellow bill tint, which first emerged roughly 100,000 years ago, might have offered an evolutionary edge.</p>



<p>This advantage could have led to the proliferation of genes responsible for yellow bills within populations of red-billed finches. </p>



<p>"While red-colored bills were the ancestral state for these finches, we can see natural selection has favored the yellow coloration as these populations have mixed," noted Professor Griffith.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-bird-s-eye-view">A bird's eye view</h2>



<p>Birds utilize carotenoid pigments for ornamental feather, skin, and bill colors. But, these pigments also play a crucial role in bird vision. </p>



<p>Nestled in their retinas, these oil droplets laden with carotenoids filter light, enabling color vision.</p>



<p>Interestingly, although yellow-billed finches cannot produce red carotenoids in their bills, they can still manufacture them in their retinas. </p>



<p>This intriguing fact suggests that the birds don't lack the genes for creating red pigments. Instead, they regulate these genes uniquely in different body parts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mechanisms-behind-unique-coloration">Mechanisms behind unique coloration</h2>

<p>When we think of animals using tools, creatures like crows, chimpanzees, and dolphins might come to mind. But have you ever considered elephants in that mix? Turns out, some of the tools that elephants use might just surprise you.</p>



<p>Michael Brecht, one of the senior authors of a recent study, was amazed by what elephants can do with a simple garden hose. </p>



<p>"Elephants are amazing with hoses," he said. "As it is often the case with elephants, hose tool use behaviors come out very differently from animal to animal; elephant Mary is the queen of showering."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mary-s-unique-shower-routine">Mary's unique shower routine</h2>



<p>So, what's so special about Mary? </p>



<p>This Asian elephant has developed a knack for showering herself using a hose. In the study conducted at the <a href="https://www.zoo-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berlin Zoo</a>, researchers observed Mary coordinating the hose with her limbs to wash different parts of her body. </p>

<p>She usually grabs the hose just behind the tip, turning it into a makeshift shower head. To reach her back, she switches things up by holding the hose further along and swinging it over her body like a lasso.</p>



<p>The team from <a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humboldt University of Berlin</a> noticed that when given a larger and heavier hose, Mary opted to use her trunk to wash instead. </p>



<p>The bulkier hose just wasn't as effective for her needs. This shows that she doesn't just use tools; she understands which tools work best in different situations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elephant-named-anchali-and-her-tool">Elephant named Anchali and her "tool"</h2>



<p>But Mary's not the only star of this story. Enter Anchali, another Asian elephant at the zoo who seems to have a bit of a mischievous streak.</p>



<p>The researchers noticed some tension between Mary and Anchali, especially when Mary was enjoying her showers.</p>



<p>At one point, Anchali began pulling the hose away from Mary, lifting and bending it to stop the water flow. </p>



<p>"The surprise was certainly Anchali's kink-and-clamp behavior," Brecht shared. "Nobody had thought that she'd be smart enough to pull off such a trick."</p>

<p>Anchali didn't stop there. She devised another method to disrupt Mary's shower time. This time, she placed her trunk on the hose and lowered her body onto it, effectively stopping the water. </p>



<p>The researchers called this the "trunkstand." Since elephants at the zoo are trained not to step on hoses to avoid being scolded by keepers, Anchali's workaround was both clever and deliberate.</p>



<p>"When Anchali came up with a second behavior that disrupted water flow to Mary, I became pretty convinced that she is trying to sabotage Mary," Brecht admitted. </p>



<p>It sparked quite a debate among the team about Anchali's true intentions. Was she being playful, or was there some elephant rivalry at play?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>These observations highlight not just the intelligence of elephants but also their ability to understand and manipulate tools in complex ways. </p>



<p>The researchers are now curious about what this could mean for wild elephants.</p>



<p>"Do elephants play tricks on each other in the wild?" Brecht wondered aloud. </p>



<p>"When I saw Anchali's kink and clamp for the first time, I broke out in laughter. So, I wonder, does Anchali also think this is funny, or is she just being mean?"</p>



<p>It's a fascinating question. If elephants in captivity can display such nuanced behavior, perhaps their wild counterparts engage in similar antics. </p>



<p>Maybe they have their own ways of teasing each other or competing for resources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-elephant-intelligence">Glimpse into elephant intelligence</h2>



<p>This study highlights the extraordinary manipulative skills elephants possess, thanks to their versatile trunks. </p>



<p>Their ability to use tools isn't just about survival; it seems to encompass social interactions and maybe even a sense of humor.</p>



<p>"I had not thought about hoses as tools much before, but what came out from Lea's work is that elephants have an exquisite understanding of these tools," Brecht mentioned. </p>



<p>It's clear that there's still so much we can learn from these majestic creatures.</p>

<p>Aging gracefully might just have a secret ally that we often overlook- a good night's sleep - which plays an essential role in overall health and well-being.</p>



<p>In a world where everyone is striving for success and juggling numerous responsibilities, it turns out that the same principle of prioritizing wellness applies to aging.</p>



<p>According to a recent study, consistently clocking more than seven hours of quality sleep could be the solution to achieving this, helping individuals maintain their physical vitality, cognitive sharpness, and emotional stability as they grow older.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sleep-behavior-and-aging-outcomes">Sleep behavior and aging outcomes </h2>



<p>The study was focused on a cross-section of people who have crossed the threshold of 45 years.</p>



<p>More than 3,300 participants had their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-color-has-no-impact-on-our-internal-clocks-or-sleep-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep patterns</a> carefully monitored over a span of four years from 2011 to 2015, capturing variations in their nightly routines and consistency. </p>



<p>Five years later, a comprehensive health assessment was conducted to evaluate the long-term impacts of their sleep behaviors on aging outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-much-sleep-for-healthy-aging">How much sleep for healthy aging?</h2>



<p>The data was analyzed by scholars from <a href="https://en.wmu.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wenzhou Medical University</a> in China. The researchers found that individuals who invest at least seven hours in sleep tend to enjoy a healthier life as they age.</p>



<p>"Successful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-every-day-proven-to-delay-biological-aging-in-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> was evaluated in 2020 and was defined as being free of major chronic diseases, no physical impairment, high cognitive function, good mental health, and active engagement with life," explained the study authors.</p>



<p>At the end of this inquisitive journey, 13.8% of the participants were deemed to have aged "successfully." Of these, approximately two-thirds had been clocking more than seven hours of sleep each night consistently.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stable-sleep-patterns-promote-healthy-aging">Stable sleep patterns promote healthy aging </h2>



<p>Based on their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-jet-lag-sleeping-in-on-the-weekends-impacts-your-gut-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleeping schedules</a>, the participants were classified into five groups: long stable, normal stable, decreasing, increasing, and short stable.</p>



<p>The chance of successful aging was found to be more prominent among the long and normal stable groups. Those with erratic patterns of rest durations didn't fare as well in the age test.</p>



<p>"Relative to participants with the normal stable sleep duration trajectory, those with the low stable and increasing trajectory had 36 percent and 52 percent lower odds of successful aging, respectively," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>The enigma of sleep's impact doesn't end there. The findings also revealed that consistent extended sleep contributes to the battle against an array of physical and mental health concerns.</p>



<p>While the research was conducted in China, which is home to one of the fastest aging populations globally, the findings have a universal application. As the world ages, it presents an imperative need for a healthy global society.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-key-to-aging-well">The key to aging well</h2>



<p>"These findings underscore that chronic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-deprivation-increases-the-risk-of-stroke-by-70-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep deprivation</a>, as well as the patterns of increasing and decreasing sleep duration, are not mere age-related changes," wrote the study authors. "Rather, they emerge as pivotal indicators of obstacles in the pursuit of successful aging." </p>



<p>So, next time you consider skimping on sleep, remember that every hour of sleep is a stepping stone to a healthier and more fulfilling life as you age.</p>

<p>The United States, although still boasting the primary footprint in Antarctica, is seeing rapid competition from China. Just recently, China completed its fifth base on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-is-greening-at-an-unprecedented-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">continent</a>, purportedly dedicated to 'scientific purposes'.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Russia seems equally intent on increasing its presence. This move, according to Dr. Lyn Goldsworthy from the University of Tasmania, is part of their broader strategy to shake up the world's rule-based order.</p>

Yet achieving the unanimous support needed for this overhaul seems a far cry away, considering the geopolitical stakes and reach of nations like Russia and China.</p>

<p>Despite its flaws, the Antarctic Treaty has managed to keep the peace for more than 60 years. But the waters are getting murky, threatening a collapse that could trigger chaos in the polar south.</p>



<p>Only time will tell what lies ahead for Antarctica. For now, it remains a symbol of what we can achieve when we let shared curiosity and respect for our planet take precedence over national interests and territorial ambitions.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
