<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

NASA announces discovery of life on Mars with high degree of confidence

<p>Vampire bats are the only mammals that live solely off blood. Their feeding habits may be the stuff of horror stories, but they have an interesting form of metabolism that sets them apart from other vertbrates.</p>



<p>Most vertebrates, including humans, use carbohydrates and fats for a source of energy. But these nutrients are in short supply in blood, the only food eaten by vampire bats. </p>



<p>Researchers Ken Welch, from the  <a href="https://learn.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a>, and Giulia Rossi who is now at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, wondered how vampire bats actually get the energy they need for survival, when they have such a simple diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eating-habits-of-the-night-stalker">Eating habits of the night stalker</h2>



<p>Vampire bats can fly from place to place, like other bats, but they also do a lot of walking. In particular, they are known to creep silently up to a sleeping animal, like a cow, in the dark of night. For this, they walk along the ground on all four limbs. </p>



<p>They have razor-sharp teeth that cut into the sleeping host without causing any pain. The incision, along with the bat's anticoagulant saliva, cause blood to ooze out. This is lapped up by the bat. </p>



<p>Rossi and Welch wondered how vampire bats can survive on such a simple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-diets-offer-clues-on-how-to-protect-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a> that is apparently deficient in carbohydrates and fats. To investigate, they caught 24 vampire bats while on location in Belize, Central America.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovative-approach-to-studying-metabolism">Innovative approach to studying metabolism</h2>



<p>Revealing how vampire bats manage their metabolism comes with significant challenges, as traditional equipment for tracking metabolism in flying animals is cumbersome and awkward. This can interfere with natural movement and skew the results.</p>



<p>To overcome this, Rossi and Welch capitalized on the fact that vampire bats stalk their prey by walking or running along the ground. The researchers set the bats on a specially-designed bat treadmill that was placed inside a small enclosure.  </p>



<p>The speed of the treadmill was increased gradually, until the bats were running along at around 30 meters per minute. With this method, the researchers could accurately measure metabolism without influencing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-bats-and-human-infants-engage-in-similar-babbling-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats' behavior</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-source-of-energy-for-vampire-bats">Source of energy for vampire bats </h2>



<p>Sensors monitored oxygen intake and carbon dioxide released in the bat's breath, while the source of the energy for respiration was determined using isotopically labeled cow blood.</p>



<p>The results revealed that the vampire bats were using amino acids for energy, rather than metabolizing carbohydrates or fats. Amino acids derive from the digestion of proteins and are a common component in blood.</p>



<p>This discovery indicates that the bats get their energy from their recent blood meal, similar to the way that blood-feeding tsetse flies or mosquitoes do.&nbsp; </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-metabolic-miracles-of-vampire-bats">Metabolic miracles of vampire bats</h2>



<p>Most mammals can use amino acids as a source of energy if they are short on carbohydrates and fats, so the basic bat chemistry isn’t that unusual. </p>



<p>“In most of us mammals, some kind of biochemical pathways can break down amino acids for fuel or some other use, but they’re built to slowly churn along in the background," explained Ken Welch. </p>



<p>Unlike fats that can be stored and used when needed, amino acids cannot be stored as an energy reserve. These bats must therefore feed daily to avoid starvation - a characteristic that gives them the reputation for being voracious blood-suckers.</p>



<p>Yet, they manage to navigate this challenge, surviving each night with precision and resilience one drop of blood at a time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bat-adaptations-beyond-metabolism">Bat adaptations beyond metabolism</h2>



<p>While this unique metabolic activity of vampire bats is fascinating, their survival relies on more than just physiology. These creatures have evolved impressive adaptations to ensure their nightly success. One of the key adaptations is their highly developed sensory system.</p>



<p>Vampire bats possess specialized heat sensors, located on their noses, that allow them to detect the blood vessels of their prey with pinpoint accuracy.</p>



<p>This enables them to make precise incisions, ensuring minimal disturbance to the host and a steady <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vampire-bats-hunt-for-food-with-their-friends/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food</a> supply.</p>



<p>Moreover, their sharp teeth and anticoagulant saliva play crucial roles in their feeding process. The bat's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolutionary-secrets-how-bat-teeth-adapted-to-their-diverse-diets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">teeth</a> are so fine and sharp that their bite is virtually painless, while their saliva contains a compound called <em>draculin</em> that prevents blood from clotting, ensuring a continuous flow while they feed. </p>



<p>These adaptations highlight that vampire bats are highly specialized creatures that rely on a suite of traits extending beyond their metabolic feats to master their environment and thrive against the odds.</p>

<p>Have you ever talked or sang to a plant or a tree? Or maybe walked through a garden and wondered if the flowers were trying to tell you something? Fascinating new research suggests that plants seem to be emitting sounds and engaging in unheard conversations, especially when they're stressed.</p>



<p>Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist and theoretician, led a team that uncovered this surprising phenomenon. </p>



<p>They found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tomatoes-acylsugars-parallel-universe-plant-kingdom-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants like tomatoes</a> and tobacco emit sounds when they're stressed, such as when they're dehydrated or their stems are cut.</p>



<p>"Even in a quiet field, there are actually sounds that we don't hear, and those sounds carry information," says Hadany. </p>



<p>"There are animals that can hear these sounds, so there is the possibility that a lot of acoustic interaction is occurring."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plants-emit-sounds-when-they-re-stressed">Plants emit sounds when they're stressed</h2>



<p>Using sensitive microphones, the researchers at <a href="https://english.tau.ac.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tel Aviv University</a> recorded these plants in both soundproof chambers and noisier greenhouses. </p>



<p>They discovered that stressed plants emit sounds resembling pops or clicks -- imagine the sound of bubble wrap being popped. </p>



<p>In fact, a single <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-respond-to-specific-stress-situations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stressed plant</a> can produce about 30 to 50 of these clicks every hour.</p>



<p>"When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet," Hadany notes. What's fascinating is that these sounds are at frequencies too high for human ears to detect. </p>



<p>However, they are comparable in volume to normal human conversation and could potentially be heard by insects, mammals, and perhaps <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-plant-communication-on-video/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">even other plants</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-hear-sounds-from-plants">How to hear sounds from plants</h2>



<p>To delve deeper, the team trained a machine-learning algorithm to differentiate between the sounds of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sensors-that-detect-plant-stress-could-revolutionize-farming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unstressed plants</a>, thirsty plants, and those that had been cut. </p>



<p>They found that not only do <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-have-a-secret-weapon-for-surviving-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stressed plants</a> emit more sounds, but the types of sounds also vary depending on the kind of stress.</p>



<p>Water-deprived plants began making noises even before showing visible signs of dehydration. </p>



<p>The frequency of their sounds peaked after five days without water and then decreased as the plants <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tomato-plants-use-their-roots-to-ration-water-during-drought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dried up completely</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-there-a-universal-plant-language">Is there a universal plant language?</h2>



<p>While the study focused on tomatoes and tobacco due to their ease of cultivation, the team didn't stop there.</p>



<p>"We found that many plants -- corn, wheat, grape, and cactus plants, for example -- emit sounds when they are stressed," says Hadany.</p>



<p>This raises the possibility that emitting sounds under stress might be a common trait among plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-this-happen">How does this happen?</h2>



<p>The exact reason plants produce these noises is still a mystery. One theory is that the sounds result from cavitation -- the formation and bursting of air bubbles in the plant's vascular system.</p>



<p>But are plants <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-emit-faint-glow-sif-when-flash-droughts-imminent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intentionally communicating</a> with these sounds?</p>



<p>"It's possible that other organisms could have evolved to hear and respond to these sounds," Hadany suggests. </p>



<p>"For example, a moth that intends to lay eggs on a plant or an animal that intends to eat a plant could use the sounds to help <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-plants-make-life-and-death-decisions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">guide their decision</a>."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-the-natural-world">Implications for the natural world</h2>



<p>If insects or other animals can detect these sounds, it could have significant ecological implications. Other plants might also be listening in.</p>



<p>"If other plants have information about stress before it actually occurs, they could prepare," says Hadany.</p>



<p>Previous studies have shown that plants can respond to sounds and vibrations. For instance, some plants increase the sugar concentration in their nectar when they "hear" the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stressed-out-bees-get-depressed-and-make-bad-decisions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">buzz of pollinators</a>.</p>



<p>Yossi Yovel, a neuro-ecologist at Tel Aviv University and co-senior author of the study, is excited about the potential applications of this discovery.</p>

<p>"We know that there's a lot of ultrasound out there -- every time you use a microphone, you find that a lot of stuff produces sounds that we humans cannot hear -- but the fact that plants are making these sounds opens a whole new avenue of opportunities for communication, eavesdropping, and exploitation of these sounds," Yovel explains.</p>



<p>Understanding these plant sounds could revolutionize how we approach agriculture. Farmers might one day use sound recordings to monitor crop hydration and stress levels, leading to more efficient water use.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-in-plant-sound-research">Next steps in plant sound research</h2>



<p>"So now that we know that plants do emit sounds, the next question is -- 'who might be listening?'" says Hadany. </p>



<p>"We are currently investigating the responses of other organisms, both animals and plants, to these sounds, and we're also exploring our ability to identify and interpret the sounds in completely natural environments," Hadany concluded.</p>



<p>To sum it all up, by discovering that stressed plants emit sounds, researchers like Lilach Hadany and Yossi Yovel have unveiled a hidden layer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-rhythms-inspire-a-new-approach-to-energy-efficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communication in nature</a>. </p>



<p>These ultrasonic clicks and pops, though inaudible to us, could be influencing how insects, animals, and even other plants interact with their environment.</p>



<p>This finding change our understanding of plant behavior while opening practical applications in agriculture. </p>



<p>By listening to these silent signals, farmers could monitor crop stress levels and optimize watering, leading to more efficient farming practices. </p>



<p>As we continue to explore this unseen world of plant acoustics, we're reminded of how much there is still to learn about the silent conversations happening all around us.</p>

<p>Mars, our celestial neighbor, has been hiding a secret for billions of years. Thanks to the relentless efforts of scientists and advanced technology, we now have more evidence supporting a long-debated theory about an ancient and vast ocean on Mars.</p>



<p>A Chinese rover has brought forth evidence that hints at the likelihood of a massive ocean, covering almost a third of the Red Planet, that existed billions of years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chinese-rover-makes-a-huge-discovery">Chinese rover makes a huge discovery</h2>



<p>In 2021, China made an impressive stride in space exploration. Its Zhurong rover landed on Mars' northern hemisphere, specifically the Utopia region. </p>



<p>This area had previously shown signs of ancient water presence, and now, it was time for a closer investigation.</p>



<p>The rover has been examining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-life-exist-below-the-icy-surface-of-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>' intriguing red terrain and its latest findings are truly mind-blowing. </p>



<p>According to the study, the rover's landing area was riddled with “pitted cones, polygonal troughs, and etched flows" -- features that indicate the presence of an ocean in the past.</p>



<p>The possibility of mud volcanoes forming those crater-like pitted cones has been suggested. These are often seen in areas where water or ice existed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-ocean-on-mars">Ancient ocean on Mars</h2>



<p>The research was led by Bo Wu, a scientist at <a href="https://www.polyu.edu.hk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hong Kong Polytechnic University</a>. According to the findings, the Martian ocean might have been created from a massive flood about 3.7 billion years ago.</p>



<p>Over time, the ocean froze, carving out a coastline, and around 3.4 billion years ago, it disappeared.</p>



<p>Bo Wu, however, maintained an open stance on these findings. He stated that the team does not claim their findings definitively prove that there was an ocean on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mars-became-uninhabitable-after-being-life-supporting-ocean-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>. Martian rocks may be required for a more detailed study to settle the debate.</p>



<p>Benjamin Cardenas, a scientist from <a href="https://www.psu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pennsylvania State University</a>, expressed skepticism about the new study. </p>



<p>He felt the research had not factored in the impact of the Martian wind, which could have significantly altered the planet's terrain over billions of years.</p>



<p>Despite his skepticism, Cardenas is not entirely dismissive of the ocean theory. "I tend to think there was an ocean on Mars," he stated.</p>

"So, evidence for an&nbsp;ocean&nbsp;makes the planet appear more hospitable."</p>

<p>Researchers have unveiled an exceptional golden fossil from an ancient era. It is beautifully preserved and frozen in time, yet appears ready to spring into life at any moment.</p>



<p>This 450-million-year-old, 3D-preserved entity is not just any fossil. The original living animal came to rest where pyrite (fool's gold) was present in the water, and this mineral entered the tissues, resulting in a fossil that glows golden. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-golden-arthropod">A golden arthropod</h2>



<p>"As well as having their beautiful and striking golden color, these fossils are spectacularly preserved. They look as if they could just get up and scuttle away," noted <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a> Professor Luke Parry.</p>



<p>The specimen, a new species named <em>Lomankus edgecombei</em>, is related to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spiders-turn-to-cannibalism-when-food-sources-are-limited/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spiders</a>, centipedes, scorpions, and horseshoe crabs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-origin-and-evolution">Intriguing origin and evolution</h2>



<p><em>Lomankus</em> belongs to a group of arthropods known as megacheirans, which are characterized by the presence of a large, modified leg - or "great appendage" -- for seizing prey.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-did-the-first-animals-appear-on-earth-we-are-now-one-step-closer-to-knowing-the-answer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cambrian Period</a>, which spanned between 538 and 485 million years ago, was rife with megacheirans. They were thought to be predators mostly, using their unusual great appendage to secure prey. </p>



<p>But most of the species died off and disappeared from the fossil record by the Ordovician Period (485 - 443 million years ago).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-golden-piece-of-the-arthropod-puzzle">Golden piece of the arthropod puzzle</h2>



<p>The discovery of <em>Lomankus</em> is like unearthing a golden piece of a giant puzzle -- it provides crucial insights into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-fossil-sheds-light-on-arthropod-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a> of the specialized head appendages of arthropods.</p>



<p>All arthropods have one or more pairs of legs at the front of their bodies that are modified for special functions, like sensing the surroundings or catching prey. </p>

<p>Such appendages include the antennae of insects and <a href="https://search.app?link=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.earth.com%2Fnews%2Fmeet-melita-panda-the-black-and-white-crustacean-shrimp%2F&amp;utm_campaign=aga&amp;utm_source=agsadl2%2Csh%2Fx%2Fgs%2Fm2%2F4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crustaceans</a>, and the pincers and fangs of spiders and scorpions.</p>



<p>"Today, there are more species of arthropod than any other group of animals on Earth. Part of the key to this success is their highly adaptable head and its appendages, that has adapted to various challenges like a biological Swiss army knife," said Professor Parry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-whip-like-appendages-for-navigation">Whip-like appendages for navigation </h2>



<p>The head appendages of <em>Lomankus</em> tell an interesting tale. Unlike its megacheiran relatives who used their great appendages primarily for hunting, <em>Lomankus</em> had reduced claws and was equipped with long, whip-like feelers that could have had a sensory, rather than a predatory role.</p>

<p>Moreover, unlike other megacheirans, <em>Lomankus</em> didn't seem to have eyes, suggesting it lived in the depths and relied on its front appendages to navigate around the sediment in the dark.</p>



<p>"Rather than representing a 'dead end,' <em>Lomankus</em> shows us that megacheirans continued to diversify and evolve long after the Cambrian, with the formerly fearsome great appendage now performing a totally different function," said Professor Parry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-features-of-lomankus">Intriguing features of <em>Lomankus</em></h2>



<p>Other intriguing features of <em>Lomankus</em> offer further evidence of its evolutionary journey and contribution to the existing fauna.</p>



<p>"These beautiful new fossils show a very clear plate on the underside of the head, associated with the mouth and flanked by the great appendages," noted Professor Yu Liu from Yunnan University.</p>



<p>"This is a very similar arrangement to the head of&nbsp;megacheirans&nbsp;from the early Cambrian of China except for the lack of eyes, suggesting that&nbsp;<em><em>Lomankus</em></em>&nbsp;probably lived in a deeper and darker niche than its Cambrian relatives." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-time-capsule-in-fool-s-gold">A time capsule in fool’s gold</h2>



<p>The fossil was discovered in a New York area famous for its "Beecher’s Trilobite Bed," a unique rock layer that is rich in trilobites.</p>



<p>A hostile, low oxygen environment led to the remarkable preservation of these creatures by replacing their bodies with pyrite, or the glittering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fools-gold-may-be-a-valuable-source-of-lithium/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fool’s gold</a>, resulting in stunning 3D fossils.</p>



<p>The pyrite-adorned treasures can be examined using a CT scan, which reveals hidden anatomical features preserved in exceptional detail.</p>



<p>Professor Derek Briggs, a co-author of the study from Yale University, noted that the fossils show how the rapid replacement of delicate anatomical features in pyrite (before they decay) preserves critical evidence of the evolution of life in the oceans 450 million years ago.</p>

Golden fossil: 450-million-year-old arthropod found inside a block of fool’s gold

<p>The complex web of life holds countless mysteries and its origins inspire endless queries. The question of which came first - the chicken or the egg - is a classic example. </p>



<p>This biological conundrum has been debated for centuries, perplexing philosophers, biologists, and curious minds alike.</p>



<p>But, we might finally be close an answer, thanks to an unexpected source - a single-celled species discovered just a mere four years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-chicken-or-the-egg">The chicken or the egg?</h2>



<p>The name of this remarkable species is Chromosphaera perkinsii. In an expedition around Hawaii in 2017, scientists discovered the species in marine sediments.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the first signs of its presence on Earth trace back to over a billion years ago. This is well before the emergence of the first animals, let alone <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chicken-domestication-humans-timeline-silk-road-evidence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chickens</a> or their eggs.</p>



<p>This long timeline of existence has allowed C. perkinsii to bear witness to some of the most monumental shifts in life as we know it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multicellular-structures">Multicellular structures</h2>



<p>A team of researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), led by Professor Omaya Dudin, has been studying C. perkinsii. They have made a striking observation - this unicellular species forms multicellular structures that are eerily similar to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chick-emotions-shed-new-light-on-animal-welfare/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal</a> embryos.</p>



<p>In the grand story of evolution, the transition from solitary, unicellular life forms (like yeast or bacteria) to complex, multicellular organisms (like animals) is a significant chapter.</p>



<p>This turns out to be a complex process, which starts with a single cell, the egg, and develops into complex beings. And believe it or not, this embryonic development process is remarkably similar across varied animal species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-roots-of-multicellularity">The roots of multicellularity</h2>



<p>Upon observing C. perkinsii, the UNIGE team made a startling discovery. Once these cells reach their maximum size, they divide without any further growth. </p>



<p>The result? Multicellular colonies. These colonies, which resemble a chicken egg structure, persist for a substantial part of their life cycle and bear a striking resemblance to the early stages of animal embryonic development.</p>



<p>So, does this mean that the researchers have stumbled onto the roots of multicellularity?</p>



<p>"Although C. perkinsii is a unicellular species, this behavior shows that multicellular coordination and differentiation processes are already present in the species, well before the first animals appeared on Earth," said Professor Dudin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threads-of-evolution">Threads of evolution</h2>



<p>Not only are the cells' divisions and the three-dimensional structure they form similar to the early stages of animal embryonic development, but their genetic activity is in sync with it too. </p>



<p>In collaboration with Dr. John Burns at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, the UNIGE team noticed intriguing similarities between the genetic activity within these colonies and that observed in animal embryos. </p>



<p>This implies that the complex genetic programs governing multicellular development, like those seen in the chicken and egg, may have already been in place over a billion years ago. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-chicken-and-egg-mystery">The chicken and egg mystery</h2>



<p>Marine Olivetta, the first author of the study and a laboratory technician at the Department of Biochemistry in the UNIGE Faculty of Science, emphasized the significance of C. perkinsii.</p>



<p>"It's fascinating, a species discovered very recently allows us to go back in time more than a billion years," said Olivetta.</p>



<p>The profoundly interesting take-away from the study is that either the principle of embryonic development existed before animals, or multicellular development mechanisms evolved separately in C. perkinsii. </p>



<p>This discovery could shed a whole new light on a long-standing scientific debate concerning 600 million-year-old fossils that resemble embryos and could challenge certain traditional conceptions of multicellularity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chicken-egg-or-c-perkinsii">Chicken, egg, or C. perkinsii?</h2>



<p>So, did the chicken come first, or the egg? According to the UNIGE team, it's possible that the building blocks of female reproductive cells, or eggs, appeared long before <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chickens-faces-change-color-depending-on-their-emotions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chickens</a> evolved. </p>



<p>Nature, therefore, could have possessed the genetic tools to create eggs long before chickens came along. </p>



<p>This unassuming, single-celled species might just have handed us a key piece of the evolutionary puzzle, improving our understanding of the origins of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-evolution">New perspective on evolution</h2>



<p>Life is a complex tapestry woven with the threads of countless organisms - each contributing to the multitude of species that inhabit our planet today.</p>



<p>The discovery of C. perkinsii and its fascinating developmental mechanisms challenges our conventional take on evolution, pushing us to rethink and reassess.</p>

<p>The study was focused on data from the Lothian Birth Cohorts (LBC), which uniquely tracked participants' cognitive abilities from childhood into their eighth decade.</p>

<p>The vital element that set this study apart was its use of the Scottish Mental Surveys from 1932 and 1947, which included almost every child born in Scotland in 1921 and 1936. </p>



<p>This thorough baseline enabled the researchers to track cognitive changes across entire lifespans and discover patterns previously unseen by science.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-structure-and-function">Brain structure and function</h2>



<p>Another aspect of the research highlighted significant differences in brain health among people of the same age.</p>

<p>A recent study has shown how lifestyle factors influence the composition of the oral microbiome - the community of beneficial bacteria and other microbes living in the mouth. </p>



<p>This research, which spans different subsistence lifestyles, from nomadic hunter-gatherers to industrialized groups, reveals how both broad lifestyle patterns and specific habits like smoking shape the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-in-your-mouth-multiply-in-a-very-unique-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oral microbiome</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diversity-of-the-oral-microbiome">Diversity of the oral microbiome</h2>



<p>The oral microbiome plays a key role in human health, aiding in digestion, bolstering immune function, and guarding against <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-pandemic-looms-as-pathogens-move-from-wild-plants-to-crops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pathogens</a>. However, a shift in its balance can be linked to various health issues.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The oral microbiome has been understudied, and most studies of the oral microbiome have been conducted in Western populations,” said Emily Davenport, an assistant professor of biology at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a> and leader of the research team.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Davenport explained that the diversity and composition of the microbiome vary globally, and by examining it within different lifestyles, the team hopes to expand understanding of its impact on health across different populations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mouth-microbes-and-diverse-lifestyles">Mouth microbes and diverse lifestyles</h2>



<p>To understand how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lifestyles</a> affect the oral microbiome, the team conducted a study on 63 individuals in Nepal, a region that offered diverse subsistence strategies within the same geographic area.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach allowed researchers to assess how lifestyle influences the microbiome without the confounding effects of geographical differences like climate, disease exposure, and access to healthcare.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In this study, we comprehensively investigated the oral microbiome of individuals across a range of lifestyles from the same country, Nepal,” explained Erica Ryu, the study’s first author and a graduate student at Penn State.</p>



<p>The participants represented a range of subsistence strategies: hunter-gatherers who move throughout the year, subsistence farmers who recently settled and started farming, agriculturalists with a longstanding history of farming, and both Nepali and American industrialists from highly industrialized settings.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers also collected detailed lifestyle information, including diet, educational background, medical practices, and habits.</p>

<p>Using DNA sequencing on saliva samples, the team identified the specific bacteria present within each person’s oral microbiome.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers found that bacterial species composition closely followed a gradient that matched the subsistence strategies, with distinct species more common among foragers and other species more common among industrialized individuals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This suggests a clear impact of lifestyle on the microbiome, supporting the hypothesis that lifestyle influences which microbial species thrive.</p>



<p>Some of these lifestyle-related microbial species were linked to particular behaviors, such as smoking, diet, and specific plants in the diet, like nettle, which is commonly chewed in Nepali culture.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings underscore that lifestyle extends beyond just environmental context to include unique cultural and habitual factors that affect the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diet-and-culture-shape-the-microbiome">Diet and culture shape the microbiome</h2>



<p>The researchers found significant associations between certain microbes and dietary staples. For instance, individuals who primarily consumed barley and maize had distinct microbiome profiles compared to those who primarily consumed rice and wheat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This reflects the idea that certain microbes may thrive depending on the grains in a person’s diet.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It makes sense that different microbes might feed on the different grains in a person’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feeding-children-healthy-diets-can-be-very-challenging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a>,” said Davenport, emphasizing the connection between dietary components and microbial composition.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team also noted an association with nettle, a fibrous plant often chewed in Nepal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Nettle is a fibrous plant often chewed by the foragers in this study, much like people might chew gum,” Davenport explained, adding that its presence in the diet could contribute to the unique microbiome composition observed in Nepali foragers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-smoking">The role of smoking</h2>



<p>The study highlights <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoking-cigarettes-accelerates-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smoking</a> as another significant factor influencing the oral microbiome.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Past research has shown that smoking affects the microbiome in industrialized populations, and the current study extends this finding across varied lifestyles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The consistent association between smoking and microbiome composition suggests that certain lifestyle factors play a key role regardless of broader lifestyle patterns or geography.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>The research team stresses the importance of considering lifestyle factors and cultural behaviors in future microbiome research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts also advocate for the inclusion of diverse populations to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the oral microbiome’s role in health.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We studied populations in Nepal because it offered a unique way to explore the effects of lifestyle while controlling for a variety of other factors like geography that often obscure that effect,” Davenport said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach reveals the impact of lifestyle on microbiome health, which is likely relevant for other populations as well.</p>



<p>“Whenever you make a shift - whether it’s to a different diet or different location or different culture - the microbiome can change too,” Davenport emphasized.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By investigating how microbiomes vary globally, scientists can better understand the processes that shape the microbiome and how these variations affect human health. This knowledge could lead to improved strategies for managing health outcomes and preventing diseases linked to microbiome imbalances.</p>



<p>The study marks a significant step forward in understanding how the oral microbiome adapts to diverse lifestyles, offering new insights that could inform future healthcare and conservation efforts around the world.</p>

<p>A recent study has highlighted how plastics impact the environment, health, and human well-being in ways far more intricate and damaging than previously understood. </p>



<p>The study uses the <a href="https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planetary Boundaries framework</a> to examine the full life cycle of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-plastic-pollution-lurks-beneath-the-surface-of-rivers/">plastics</a>, showing their impacts on global environmental issues including climate change, biodiversity loss, and freshwater and land use.</p>



<p>“It’s necessary to consider the full life cycle of plastics, starting from the extraction of fossil fuel and the primary plastic polymer production,” explained lead author Patricia Villarrubia-Gómez, a doctoral student at the <a href="https://www.stockholmresilience.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm Resilience Center</a> at Stockholm University.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-overload">Global plastic overload</h2>



<p>Currently, over 500 million tons of plastics are produced each year, yet only 9% is recycled. Plastics are pervasive, contaminating ecosystems from Mount Everest’s peak to the Mariana Trench’s depths.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research team’s review reveals how plastic pollution affects fundamental Earth systems, contributing to almost every pressing global environmental challenge.</p>



<p>Plastics are complex synthetic materials, often combined with thousands of chemicals. Their effects extend throughout their life cycle, from raw material extraction to production, use, and release into the environment.</p>



<p>“Plastics are seen as those inert products that protect our favorite products or make our lives easier, that can be ‘easily cleaned up’ once they become waste. But this is far from reality,” noted Villarrubia-Gómez.</p>



<p>“Plastics are made out of the combination of thousands of chemicals. Many of them, such as endocrine disruptors and chemicals, pose toxicity and harm to ecosystems and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-marine-protected-areas-boost-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human health</a>.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interconnected-impacts-of-plastics">Interconnected impacts of plastics</h2>



<p>Until now, most research and policy efforts have focused on specific aspects of plastic pollution, often treating it primarily as a waste management problem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the research highlights that plastics’ impacts are interconnected, destabilizing the Earth system in ways previously overlooked.</p>



<p>“The impacts of plastics on the Earth system are complex and interconnected,” said co-author Sarah Cornell, an expert in global sustainability at the Stockholm Resilience Center. “This work clearly demonstrates how plastics are acting to destabilize the system.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-system-impacts-of-plastic">Earth system impacts of plastic</h2>



<p>To more effectively address these impacts, the researchers propose an impact pathway approach. This framework includes indicators at three main stages of plastics’ life cycle: extraction and production, environmental release, and systemic Earth impacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rather than seeking a single quantitative threshold for plastic pollution within the Planetary Boundaries framework, they suggest a set of control variables that can better capture the multifaceted nature of plastics pollution.</p>



<p>“We emphasize the need to account for impacts at all stages along the life cycle of plastics,” Villarrubia-Gómez said. “We propose a set of control variables that together allow us to better understand and control plastics pollution.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-data-transparency-nbsp">Challenges in data transparency&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research team examined publicly available data on plastic production, noting significant challenges in standardizing and reporting. In 2022 alone, at least 506 million tons of plastics were produced worldwide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Since the 1950s, an estimated total of 11,090 million tons have been produced. However, inconsistent data reporting, lack of methodological detail, and missing metadata complicate reliable assessments.</p>



<p>The team noted that this data gap limits both research and policy responses. Even with current limitations, the available evidence demonstrates how plastics contribute to environmental harm at planetary scales.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Plastic pollution affects ecosystems directly, through physical contamination, and indirectly, by altering Earth’s biophysical processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solutions-to-address-planetary-health">Solutions to address planetary health</h2>



<p>For people across the globe, the impacts of plastic pollution are becoming more severe as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-exceeded-six-of-nine-planetary-boundaries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary boundaries</a> are increasingly breached. </p>



<p>Understanding how plastics interact within the Planetary Boundaries framework can support more sustainable strategies to address pressing environmental issues.</p>



<p>Study co-author Bethanie Carney Almroth, an expert in the environmental impact of plastics at the <a href="https://www.gu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Gothenburg</a>, noted that plastics are now found in the most remote regions of the planet and in the most intimate - within human bodies.</p>



<p>“And we know that plastics are complex materials, released into the environment throughout the plastics life cycle, resulting in harm in many systems,” she said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The solutions we strive to develop must be considered with this complexity in mind, addressing the full spectrum of safety and sustainability to protect people and the planet.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reframing-plastic-pollution-policy">Reframing plastic pollution policy</h2>



<p>With international Plastics Treaty negotiations approaching, the researchers urge experts and policymakers to view plastic pollution as more than a waste issue.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By focusing on the entire lifecycle and material flow, they hope policymakers can address the effects of plastic pollution on Earth's fundamental systems.</p>



<p>This shift in perspective could enable more precise tracking of plastic pollution’s impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-interlinked-crisis-of-plastic-pollution-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>, biodiversity, and resources, allowing for timely, targeted responses.</p>

<p>Have you ever found yourself acting differently when you know you're being watched? Well, it turns out, humans aren't the only ones who feel the pressure of an audience. Recent research has revealed that chimpanzees also feel the influence of onlookers.</p>



<p>The fact that chimpanzees' performance changes based on whether they're being watched or not is utterly fascinating.</p>



<p>“It was very surprising to find that chimpanzees are affected in their task performance by audience members, and by human audience members nonetheless!” said Christen Lin of <a href="https://www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyoto University</a> in Japan.</p>



<p>“One might not expect a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-use-rapid-gestures-in-conversations-like-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimp</a> to particularly care if another species is watching them perform a task, but the fact that they seem to be affected by human audiences even depending on the difficulty of the task suggests that this relationship is more complex than we would have initially expected.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chimpanzees-and-the-audience-effect">Chimpanzees and the audience effect</h2>



<p>A group of researchers, including Shinya Yamamoto and Akiho Muramatsu, took the lead on this study. They were curious to find out if the "audience effect," often ascribed to how we humans manage our reputation, may also exist in non-human primates.</p>



<p>People are often unconsciously attentive to who's observing them, which may influence their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mother-child-play-is-a-crucial-part-of-chimpanzee-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior</a> and performance.</p>



<p>But what about chimps? It's known that chimpanzees also exist within hierarchical societies like ours, but it wasn't immediately clear if their performance might be swayed by who is watching.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chimpanzees-in-the-company-of-humans">Chimpanzees in the company of humans</h2>



<p>"Our study site is special in that chimpanzees frequently interact with and even enjoy the company of humans here, participating almost daily in various touch screen experiments for food rewards," explained Muramatsu.</p>



<p>This unique interaction between chimps and humans provided the researchers with an opportunity. </p>



<p>Not only were they able to investigate potential similarities in audience-related effects, but they were able to do so in a context where chimps already share unique bonds with humans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-observers-affect-chimpanzees">Human observers affect chimpanzees</h2>



<p>The experiment conducted by the researchers was meticulously designed to examine how the presence of a human audience affected the chimpanzees' performance. </p>



<p>The setup involved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-machine-learning-can-help-us-protect-chimpanzees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimpanzees</a> engaging in tasks of varying complexity on touch screens while their interactions with human observers were carefully monitored. </p>



<p>The tasks ranged from simple, requiring basic selections, to complex sequences that challenged the chimps' problem-solving abilities. </p>



<p>The presence of different types of human observers - familiar or unfamiliar, and well-dressed or casually attired - added layers of complexity to the experiment. This rigorous approach ensured that the results were not merely anecdotal but grounded in robust scientific inquiry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-primate-behavior">Understanding primate behavior</h2>



<p>The findings from this study have significant implications for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-continue-learning-as-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding of primate behavior</a> and cognition. If chimpanzees modify their actions based on the human gaze, they may have the ability to perceive and interpret social cues from another species.</p>



<p>This capability suggests a higher level of cognitive functioning and raises intriguing questions about the evolutionary bridges connecting human and non-human primates. It also prompts a reconsideration of how we view the social dynamics within captive and wild chimpanzee populations. </p>



<p>By recognizing the nuanced ways in which chimpanzees interact with humans, researchers can better tailor enrichment activities and conservation strategies to support their psychological and physical well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-performing-for-an-audience">Performing for an audience</h2>



<p>The researchers made their discovery after analyzing thousands of sessions where chimpanzees completed a touch screen task spanning six years.</p>



<p>In three different number-based tasks, chimpanzees performed better on the most difficult task when the number of experimenters observing them increased. </p>



<p>For the simplest task, however, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-seek-medicinal-plants-when-theyre-sick-or-injured/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimps</a> performed worse when being watched by more experimenters or other familiar people.</p>



<p>What's the reason behind these audience-related effects? It's not clear-cut, even for humans. The researchers theorize that further study in non-human apes might provide more insight into how this trait evolved and its purpose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chimpanzees-and-human-audiences">Chimpanzees and human audiences</h2>



<p>"Our findings suggest that how much humans care about witnesses and audience members may not be quite so specific to our species," noted Yamamoto.</p>



<p>"These characteristics are a core part of how our societies are largely based on reputation. If chimpanzees also pay special attention towards audience members while they perform their tasks, it stands to reason that these audience-based characteristics could have evolved before reputation-based societies emerged in our great ape lineage."</p>

<p>Indeed, human culture - our shared knowledge and practices passed down over generations - has an undeniable vitality that seems unparalleled in the animal kingdom.</p>



<p>Thomas Morgan, an evolutionary anthropologist and a scholar from <a href="https://www.asu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arizona State University</a>, is shedding new light on this enduring question. He brings exciting ideas to the table which might alter how we view ourselves and the world.</p>



<p>"Ten years ago it was basically accepted that it was the ability of human culture to accumulate and evolve that made us special, but new discoveries about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-share-many-of-the-same-behaviors-as-animals-that-live-nearby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal behavior</a> are challenging these ideas and forcing us to rethink what makes our cultures, and us as a species, unique," said Morgan. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teaching-and-learning-across-species">Teaching and learning across species</h2>



<p>What's fascinating is that the act of passing knowledge to subsequent generations isn't exclusive to humans. Animals also engage in this practice.</p>



<p>Take leafcutter ants, for example. When a new queen hatches, she takes a bit of her mother's fungus to start her colony. </p>



<p>This practice has been ongoing for millions of years to the point that the fungus within these colonies has evolved to be genetically different from the wild fungus.</p>



<p>The parallels don't stop there. Much like human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-begin-to-learn-language-before-they-are-even-born/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">languages</a> evolve over time, humpback whale songs undergo the same process. They change, spread between groups, and become more complex over time.</p>



<p>Chimpanzees also learn to use tools, something they've been doing for thousands - or perhaps even millions - of years.</p>



<p>Locusts, too, adapt to local conditions, relying on epigenetic changes to transition between various forms based on overpopulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-open-ended-nature-of-human-culture">Open-ended nature of human culture</h2>



<p>With the growing evidence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-started-cumulative-culture-around-600000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolving cultures</a> among animals, it leads us to question: What is special about human culture that sets us apart from other animals?</p>



<p>In their paper, "Human culture is uniquely open-ended, not uniquely cumulative," Morgan and Stanford University Professor Marcus Feldman provide an intriguing answer. They suggest that it's the human ability to conceive and understand endless possibilities that make us so influential.</p>



<p>The distinguishing feature of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-ever-3d-map-of-human-brain-created-by-harvard-and-google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human brain</a>, according to Morgan, lies in our ability to build and remember complex sequences of instructions. This permits us to exhibit an almost limitless range of behaviors - a trait referred to as open-endedness.</p>

<p>“The way that animals think about what they’re doing constrains the way that their cultures can evolve. One way might be that they can’t imagine elaborate sequences very easily, or they can’t imagine subgoals," said Morgan. </p>



<p>“For example, when I’m making my boys’ breakfast in the morning, it’s a nested, multistep process. First, I need to get the bowls and pots and other equipment. Then I need to put the ingredients in the pot and start cooking, all in the right amounts and order. Then I need to cook it, stirring and monitoring temperature until it reaches the right consistency, and then I need to serve it up."</p>



<p>“Each of these steps is a subgoal, and these subgoals have steps within them that I need to execute in the right order, so this whole thing is an elaborate procedure.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-redefining-cultural-evolution">Redefining cultural evolution</h2>



<p>Unlike previous comparisons of human and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-not-the-only-animals-that-create-their-own-culture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal cultures</a>, Morgan and Feldman's research stands out. </p>



<p>The study includes comparisons of animal examples of epigenetic inheritance and parental effects, such as the leafcutter ant (parental effect) and the locust (cumulative epigenetic inheritance).</p>



<p>While both epigenetic inheritance and parental effects are stable and accumulate in non-human species, they eventually stop developing, noted Morgan. “Just like animal cultures, there are constraints that these systems run-up against and that halt their evolution.” </p>



<p>“I think the key question is what is special about human culture, and we tried to answer that by comparing human cultures with animal cultures, with epigenetics, and with parental effects - as many evolving systems as we can think of," said Morgan.</p>



<p>"And in the end we concluded that the special thing about human culture is its open-endedness. It can accumulate but then it never has to stop, it just keeps going.”</p>

<p>As Morgan and Feldman’s research pushes the boundaries of how we perceive human culture, it opens the door to new questions and areas of exploration. </p>

<p>Droughts define the American West - dry, dusty, and unforgiving. Yet, these recurring droughts are not solely due to a lack of rainfall as previously thought.</p>



<p>A recent study indicates a different narrative, placing the blame on rising temperatures caused by human-induced climate change.</p>



<p>The study asserts that increased evaporation, driven by warmer temperatures, has played a more significant role than decreased precipitation in droughts across the American West, especially since 2000.</p>



<p>The study was conducted by scientists at UCLA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-heat-and-drought-severity">Rising heat and drought severity</h2>



<p>The researchers concluded that during the 2020-2022 drought, evaporation accounted for 61 percent of the drought’s severity, while reduced precipitation contributed only 39 percent.</p>



<p>Study lead author Rong Fu, a <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, made an interesting clarification.</p>



<p>“Research has already shown that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flash-droughts-are-increasing-around-the-world-due-to-warming-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warmer temperatures</a> contribute to drought, but this is, to our knowledge, the first study that actually shows that moisture loss due to demand is greater than the moisture loss due to lack of rainfall," noted Professor Fu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-shift-in-perspective">A shift in perspective </h2>



<p>Historically, drought in the West has been associated with reduced rainfall. However, warming temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels have intensified evaporative demand.</p>



<p>This clearly broadens our perspective on the causes of drought, highlighting the need to account for human activities and their impacts on the environment.</p>



<p>Veva Deheza, executive director of NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System and co-author of the study, elaborated on this shift in understanding.</p>



<p>"For generations, drought has been associated with drier-than-normal weather. This study further confirms we’ve entered a new paradigm where rising temperatures are leading to intense droughts, with precipitation as a secondary factor," said Deheza.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-rain-that-never-falls">The rain that never falls</h2>



<p>Our climate is a complex system. As the planet warms, evaporation rates increase. Even though a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, it will not necessarily result in precipitation.</p>



<p>Heat keeps water molecules in constant motion, making condensation - and thus <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-cause-a-major-delay-in-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> - difficult. This cyclic process suggests that droughts will last longer, cover wider areas, and be even drier with every bit that the planet warms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-evaporation-and-droughts">Heat, evaporation, and droughts</h2>



<p>What happens when we analyze observational data over a 70-year period about "natural" droughts and those resulting from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human-induced climate change</a>? </p>



<p>Surprisingly, researchers found that climate change has accounted for 80 percent of the increase in evaporative demand since 2000. During the drought periods, that figure increased to more than 90 percent.</p>



<p>These figures reveal that climate change is the main driver increasing drought severity and expansion since 2000.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-drought-severity">Climate change and drought severity </h2>



<p>The researchers made a dramatic comparison of drought patterns. Before 2000, only 26 percent of droughts were caused by high evaporative demand. Since 2000, this figure jumped to 66 percent.</p>



<p>Professor Fu highlighted the impact of climate change on the drought severity. </p>



<p>"Though the drought began through a natural reduction in precipitation, I would say its severity was increased from the equivalent of ‘moderate’ to ‘exceptional' on the drought severity scale due to climate change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-droughts">The future of droughts </h2>



<p>The study concludes with a warning. If the emission of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/state-of-the-climate-greenhouse-gases-hit-a-record-high-in-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gases</a> continues unabated, what we once considered severe droughts will become more frequent events in the not-so-distant future.</p>



<p>“Even if precipitation looks normal, we can still have drought because moisture demand has increased so much and there simply isn’t enough water to keep up with that increased demand," said Professor Fu.</p>



<p>"This is not something you could build bigger reservoirs or something to prevent because when the atmosphere warms, it will just suck up more moisture everywhere. The only way to prevent this is to stop temperatures from increasing, which means we have to stop emitting greenhouse gases.”</p>



<p>The research was supported by NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System and Climate Program Office, and the National Science Foundation.</p>



<p>The findings highlight the urgent need to address climate change. The future of the American West depends on us - on our actions and our commitment to preserving the environment.</p>

Climate change is now the driving force behind droughts

<p>Picture a rainbow of feathers fluttering from the treetops. That's a scarlet macaw, a bird known for its love and loyalty. However, as perfect as scarlet macaws seem, these lifelong mates often abandon their chicks.</p>



<p>A study conducted by researchers at Texas A&amp;M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has revealed that scarlet macaws tend to show favoritism with their young, a cruel twist in their nature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scarlet-macaws-have-favorite-chicks">Scarlet macaws have favorite chicks</h2>



<p>Scarlet macaws, even with bountiful resources, deliberately withhold feeding the youngest of their chicks. This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infanticide-or-adoption-why-parrots-kill-each-others-chicks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stark bias</a> results in only one or two chicks learning the ropes of survival, without consideration for broods that host up to four chicks.</p>



<p>"Scientists have known for years that scarlet macaws hatch more chicks than they fledge," said Dr. Donald Brightsmith, a professor in the VMBS’ Department of Veterinary Pathobiology.</p>



<p>“We found that 26% of second chicks in scarlet macaw broods and nearly all third and fourth chicks die before fledging."</p>



<p>Perplexing, isn't it? How could such loving creatures abandon their own young to die? It seems, in this case, the parental code for these birds isn’t written in black and white.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-of-scarlet-macaw-chicks">Survival of scarlet macaw chicks </h2>



<p>Dr. Gabriela Vigo-Trauco, a leading researcher with the Schubot Center for Avian Health, noted a relevant fact - every chick doesn’t hatch on the same day because scarlet macaws lay eggs over an extended period.</p>



<p>The difference in the hatching dates influences the feeding decisions of the parents - a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elusive-bird-night-parrot-pezoporus-occidentalis-thought-to-be-long-extinct-rediscovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survival tactic</a> no one saw coming.</p>



<p>When the hatching period varies by four or more days, the parental care for each chick starts differing. This differentiation is what leads to the appalling neglect and subsequent starvation of the youngest chicks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foster-parents-for-macaw-chicks">Foster parents for macaw chicks</h2>



<p>With these findings, <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M</a> scientists have devised a means to combat this issue, mitigating the fatalities among the neglected chicks.</p>



<p>The researchers propose that "foster parents" for the neglected chicks might be the solution to this pressing problem. While this may seem like a human intervention, it's more akin to a nudge in the right direction.</p>



<p>The scientists believe that foster parenting strategies could come to the rescue of many endangered parrot species, shifting the balance in favor of these threatened birds. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brood-reduction-a-harsh-reality">Brood reduction: A harsh Reality</h2>



<p>The strategy these birds employ is termed "brood reduction," and it isn't exclusive to scarlet macaws. Many bird species, including sea birds like boobies, gulls, and eagles, are notorious for their sibling rivalries and fratricide.</p>



<p>For scarlet macaws, however, starvation is the cause of 45% of all chick deaths, with the third and fourth hatchlings in a brood rarely surviving.</p>



<p>What could be the reason behind 26% of second-born chicks also perishing from lack of food? The researchers tackled this question head-on. They started by rejecting the idea of resource scarcity causing starvation.</p>



<p>Gustavo Martinez, a member of the research team, investigated the scarlet macaw's primary food source - fruit trees - in the forests of the Tambopata National Reserve in Peru.</p>



<p>Martinez found that the abundance of food in the environment was not a problem. So what was the real issue?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-pattern-of-neglect">Disturbing pattern of neglect</h2>



<p>To find out, the researchers turned to modern technology, installing cameras in nest boxes across the Tambopata National Reserve. From their footage, a disturbing pattern of neglect emerged.</p>



<p>Dr. Brightsmith noted that scarlet macaws have a food sac on their necks called a crop, and in chicks it’s very easy to see when it’s full of food.</p>



<p>“We caught video of female macaws trying to over-feed their oldest chicks while the third chick would be running slowly around the base of the nest with an empty crop, begging for food," said Dr. Brightsmith.</p>



<p>“What’s more, the chicks at that age can’t regulate their own body temperature, so they need to be in the nest. We saw that the mother won’t even share her body heat with her dying offspring."</p>



<p>“As scientists, we try not to do what’s called anthropomorphizing - attaching human ideas about morality to animals. But it’s hard to watch that and not think of it as parental abuse.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-neglected-macaw-chicks">Saving neglected macaw chicks </h2>



<p>While the evidence paints a grim picture, it's not all doom and gloom. Remember the foster parent solution we talked about earlier? Well, it has been successfully implemented by Dr. Vigo-Trauco as part of her doctoral research.</p>



<p>“To save neglected chicks, they are raised in captivity for a few weeks before being placed in the nests of macaws with chicks at a similar developmental stage or that have lost all their chicks to predation," explained Vigo-Trauco.</p>



<p>The success of the fostering program lies in ensuring that all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-extinctions-shatter-the-harmonious-balance-of-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chicks</a> look approximately the same size. This familiarity encourages the foster parents to accept the orphaned chicks as their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-success-of-the-fostering-program">Success of the fostering program </h2>



<p>The good news? The scarlet macaws accept their new role with surprising ease. Despite their initial confusion, they accept and care for the newcomers. So far, the team has successfully re-homed 28 chicks across three breeding seasons.</p>



<p>While scarlet macaws aren't endangered or threatened, their behavior sheds light on survival strategies that might prove crucial for other parrot species around the globe.</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-parrots-in-the-illegal-wildlife-trade-with-dna-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Parrots</a> are one of the most endangered groups of birds in the world,” noted Dr. Brightsmith. “We hope that this program, and the understanding of brood reduction behind it, can assist with the conservation of a broad array of parrot species across the tropics.”</p>

<p>Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
