<p>A small, cool star 40 light-years away has a planet that just might hold on to an atmosphere. Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to watch that world, TRAPPIST-1e, pass in front of its star four times and extract the planet’s faint atmospheric fingerprint.</p>



<p>A new paper reports those observations and what they can - and cannot - show about the gases above this rocky surface. </p>



<p>The team can already reject a thick, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, but the data are not yet strong enough to prove what is there on the planet instead.</p>



<p>Néstor Espinoza from the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> (STScI) led the analysis with the JWST Telescope Scientist Team.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-star-activity-masks-trappist-1e">Star activity masks TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1 is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planets-orbiting-red-dwarf-stars-may-not-be-habitable-ultraviolet-uv-radiation/">red dwarf star</a>, a compact and relatively cool star type that often flares and develops spots in ways that upset precise measurements. </p>



<p>That activity complicates the search for air around its planets because changes from the star can masquerade as signs from a planet’s atmosphere.</p>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e sits in the star’s habitable zone - the region where a planet could support liquid water on its surface if pressure and temperature are suitable. </p>



<p>That alone does not make it hospitable, since the star’s outbursts could strip or scramble any atmosphere over time.</p>



<p>Earlier Webb data on the inner siblings, such as TRAPPIST-1b, found little evidence of a substantial atmosphere. </p>



<p>That result keeps expectations in check and places more weight on careful, repeated measurements for the middle worlds.</p>



<p>NASA shared a technical feature explaining that the first four TRAPPIST-1e observations are not enough to confirm an atmosphere. </p>



<p>The figure shows that models with and without an atmosphere still overlap in the range allowed by today’s data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-telescope-actually-measured">What the telescope actually measured</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e is an exoplanet, a planet beyond our solar system. When it crosses the star, a tiny bit of starlight filters through any air at the planet’s edge, and that light carries molecular fingerprints.</p>



<p>This method is called transmission spectroscopy, and it spreads the light into wavelengths to see where particular gases absorb. </p>



<p>Webb’s NIRSpec instrument recorded four such transits in 2023, covering wavelengths where gases like water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide could show up clearly.</p>



<p>Because the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interstellar-tunnel-cosmic-channel-discovered-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars/">star</a> itself has features that can change over minutes to hours, the team built models to separate stellar effects from any possible planetary signals. </p>



<p>They also combined the four events to reduce random noise while being careful not to blur out real, repeatable features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-primary-atmosphere-detected">No primary atmosphere detected</h2>



<p>A hydrogen-rich atmosphere on the planet would have produced large, easily seen features in the spectrum. </p>



<p>The team reports that such primary atmospheres - dominated by hydrogen at levels above roughly 80 percent by volume - are inconsistent with the data.</p>



<p>Ana Glidden is a postdoctoral researcher in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences and the MIT <a href="https://www.space.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.</a></p>



<p>“The idea is: If we assume that the planet is not airless, can we constrain different atmospheric scenarios? Do those scenarios still allow for liquid water at the surface?” she said. </p>



<p>Glidden noted that the results rule out a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere and tighten limits on several secondary-atmosphere scenarios.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A warm, nitrogen-rich mix remains possible, along with other secondary atmospheres that could arise from volcanic outgassing. </p>



<p>Those would appear much subtler in the data than hydrogen and require more than four transits to emerge from the noise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stellar-flares-complicate-tests">Stellar flares complicate tests</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/">TRAPPIST-1</a>’s surface has star spots and frequent flares that change its spectrum over time. </p>



<p>That “stellar contamination” can either add or remove features in the planetary spectrum and, if not modeled correctly, can be misleading.</p>



<p>To tackle that, the authors used Gaussian processes, a flexible statistical tool that learns the typical shape and size of the star’s variations and then subtracts them. </p>



<p>That approach does not assume a perfect star model, which is wise when the star is as active as this one.</p>



<p>The goal is to treat any wiggles that change from one visit to the next as coming from the star, and any persistent pattern as likely belonging to the planet. Webb’s stability helps here, but the source star’s behavior still sets the pace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trappist-1e-air-circulation">TRAPPIST-1e air circulation</h2>



<p>A nitrogen-rich atmosphere would resemble Earth in broad strokes, though details such as oxygen, water vapor, and methane would matter greatly. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/">Nitrogen</a> alone does not prove anything about life on the planet, but it suggests a heavier, secondary atmosphere capable of maintaining surface pressure.</p>



<p>“We are seeing two possible explanations," said Ryan MacDonald, Lecturer in Extrasolar Planets in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the <a href="https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St Andrews</a>.</p>



<p>"The most exciting possibility is that TRAPPIST-1e could have a so-called secondary atmosphere containing heavy gases like nitrogen. But our initial observations cannot yet rule out a bare rock with no atmosphere.” </p>



<p>Independent of biology, an atmosphere changes surface temperature and how heat moves from day to night. On a tidally locked world, that could be the difference between an ice cap and a stable ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-webb-and-trappist-1e">Webb and TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>The team plans many more transits to shrink error bars and test for specific gases. More visits let the statistics work, and they also average over the star’s mood swings.</p>



<p>“In the coming years we will go from four JWST observations of TRAPPIST-1e to nearly twenty," said MacDonald. </p>



<p>"We finally have the telescope and tools to search for habitable conditions in other star systems, which makes today one of the most exciting times for astronomy.”</p>



<p>As the dataset grows, scientists can check for methane and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-dioxide-hydrogen-peroxide-discovered-on-plutos-moon-charon/">carbon dioxide</a> together and run climate models that test whether liquid water could persist at the surface. </p>



<p>Caution remains the watchword until a clear atmospheric pattern repeats across many passes.</p>

Nearby rocky planet may hold an atmosphere fit for life

<p>We've got a cosmic mystery on our hands. No one’s ever confirmed the existence of an 'exomoon,' which is a moon outside our solar system. However, a new NASA-led study might finally give us some indirect evidence for one in a system just 635 light-years away from Earth.</p>



<p>Astronomers have spotted a giant cloud of sodium near an exoplanet called WASP-49 b, and it might just be the clue pointing to a moon unlike any we've seen before.</p>



<p>Apurva Oza, a staff scientist at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>, has been digging into this enigma. His research suggests that this sodium cloud could be coming from a rocky, volcanic moon orbiting the gas giant planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sodium-discovery-hints-at-an-exomoon">Sodium discovery hints at an exomoon</h2>



<p>Back in 2017, scientists first detected this unusual cloud of sodium around WASP-49 b. It caught Oza's attention because neither the planet -- a Saturn-sized gas giant -- nor its star have enough sodium to explain such a massive cloud. </p>



<p>To put it in perspective, the source seems to be producing about 220,000 pounds of sodium every second!</p>



<p>So, where's all this sodium coming from? That's the million-dollar question. </p>



<p>"We think this is a really critical piece of evidence," said Oza. "The cloud is moving in the opposite direction that physics tells us it should be going if it were part of the planet’s atmosphere."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-echoes-of-jupiter-s-volcanic-moon-io">Echoes of Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io</h2>



<p>To make sense of this, Oza looked closer to home. In our solar system, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-moon-io-has-a-huge-new-volcano/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter's moon Io</a> is the most volcanic body we know. </p>



<p>It constantly spews gases like sulfur dioxide and sodium, creating vast clouds that can stretch up to 1,000 times Jupiter's radius. If a moon like Io were orbiting WASP-49 b, it could produce a similar sodium cloud.</p>

<p>This idea isn't just a shot in the dark. The cloud's behavior around WASP-49 b resembles the way Io's emissions create a giant gas cloud around Jupiter. </p>



<p>But detecting exomoons (moons outside our solar system) is no easy feat. They're often too small and faint for our current telescopes to spot directly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chasing-exomoon-clues-in-deep-space">Chasing exomoon clues in deep space</h2>



<p>Oza and his team embarked on a celestial detective hunt. Since the star, planet, and cloud often overlap from our distant viewpoint, they had to watch the system over time to tease apart their movements. </p>



<p>Twice, they noticed the cloud suddenly growing larger when it wasn't next to the planet. That hinted at a separate body -- possibly a moon -- refueling the cloud.</p>



<p>Moreover, the cloud was moving faster than the planet in a way that didn't add up unless something else was in play. </p>



<p>It's like seeing footprints ahead of you in the sand when no one else is around -- you start to wonder who's making them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peering-through-powerful-eyes">Peering through powerful eyes</h2>



<p>To get a better look, the team used the European Southern Observatory's <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/vlt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Very Large Telescope (VLT)</a> in Chile. </p>



<p>Julia Seidel, a research fellow at the observatory and co-author of the study, found that the cloud sits high above the planet's atmosphere, much like Io's gas cloud around Jupiter.</p>



<p>They also fired up a computer model to see if a moon could explain what they were seeing. </p>



<p>The model showed that if there were a moon orbiting the planet every eight hours, it could account for the cloud's odd movements and the way it sometimes drifted in front of the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-difficulty-of-hunting-for-exomoons">Difficulty of hunting for exomoons</h2>



<p>While exomoons remain elusive, this research adds a tantalizing piece to the puzzle. Detecting them is tricky business. </p>



<p>They don't emit their own light, and they're often lost in the glare of their parent planets and stars. But clues like mysterious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gas clouds</a> give astronomers a new way to search.</p>



<p>"We're not just looking for tiny dots of light," Oza explained. "We're looking for the fingerprints they leave behind."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>There's still work to be done. The team wants to observe the system longer to confirm the cloud's orbit and structure. </p>



<p>“The evidence is very compelling that something other than the planet and star are producing this cloud,” said Rosaly Lopes, a planetary geologist at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a> who co-authored the study with Oza. </p>



<p>“Detecting an exomoon would be quite extraordinary, and because of Io, we know that a volcanic exomoon is possible.”</p>



<p>Future telescopes and instruments could provide sharper eyes to spot these hidden moons directly.</p>



<p>But for now, the possibility of a volcanic exomoon orbiting WASP-49 b opens up exciting avenues. It's a reminder that the universe is full of surprises waiting to be uncovered.</p>

<p>Small apes known as crested gibbons are capturing attention with their exuberant dance moves. Researchers believe that this dancing is not just random, but is an intentional action which plays a crucial role in communication among crested gibbons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-allure-of-gibbon-dances">Allure of gibbon dances</h2>



<p>For anyone who has visited a zoo, the sight of female crested gibbons engrossed in choreographed sequences of twitching movements may be familiar.</p>



<p>Using their rumps, arms, and legs, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/apes-use-gestures-similar-to-human-body-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates perform</a> in a way that's reminiscent of a human dance. </p>



<p>Crested gibbons are found both in captivity and in the wild, impressing audiences with their eye-catching dance routines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-the-dance-of-gibbons">Science behind the dance of gibbons</h2>



<p>The dance of the crested gibbons has not attracted significant scientific attention in the past. But now, a study by an international team of researchers has focused on this remarkable behavior.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Kai R. Caspar from the Institute of Cell Biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (<a href="https://www.hhu.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HHU</a>), Dr. Camille Coye from the <a href="http://www.institutnicod.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institut Jean Nicod</a> in Paris, and Professor Dr. Pritty Patel-Grosz from the <a href="https://www.uio.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oslo</a> in Norway.</p>



<p>The experts analyzed the sequence of movements, rhythm, and intentionality, as well as the contexts in which these gibbons choose to dance.</p>



<p>"Our examination of video material from various zoos and rescue centers proves that all species of crested gibbons perform these dances. They represent a common and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/playful-teasing-among-apes-suggests-that-humor-has-ancient-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intentional form of visual communication</a>," said Dr. Coye, who led the study.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that the gibbons often check during a performance to see if they are being watched, suggesting a desire to communicate through their dance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dancing-for-communication">Dancing for communication</h2>



<p>The team found that only mature female gibbons dance, primarily as a form of solicitation for copulation. </p>



<p>However, the dances are not limited to sexual arousal; they also occur in situations related to non-sexual arousal or frustration. Interestingly, when in captivity, the dances are often directed at humans.</p>

<p>Observing these dances, one can't help but draw parallels between crested gibbon dances and human dances. However, the researchers believe these practices evolved independently, noting that other species of apes do not display this behavior.</p>



<p>While human dances are primarily influenced by culture and are often accompanied by music or song, the researchers believe that the gibbon dances are likely innate. They also found that music or song does not accompany gibbon dances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-benefits-of-gibbon-dances">Evolutionary benefits of gibbon dances</h2>



<p>The evolutionary origins of the crested gibbons' dances may extend beyond mere communication. <p>This dancing behavior was discovered by chance, but now it is being reported from various zoos, noted Dr. Caspar.</p>



<p>To catch a glimpse of these dancing gibbons, one can visit the Duisburg Zoo or Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem in the Netherlands, among other locations.</p>



<p>So, the next time you see female crested gibbons swaying in an intriguing dance, remember there's more than meets the eye. This mesmerizing dance is not just an amusing display but also a complex and essential form of communication in the fascinating world of these gibbons.</p>

<p>In 1898, an encampment of bridge builders on the Tsavo River in Kenya felt tremors of terror. The cause? Two massive and maneless male lions had decided to make the camp their nightly haunt.</p>



<p>This is not about a couple of wandering cats. This is about two fearless, hefty creatures that took the darkness as a shroud to raid tents and drag off victims.</p>



<p>The infamous man-eating lions of Tsavo were said to have killed at least 28 people before Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson, the civil engineer of the project, put an end to their reign of terror.</p>



<p>These lions weren't forgotten, however. In 1925, Patterson sold their remains to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Fast forward to the present day, these remains have become the subjects of an intriguing study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tsavo-man-eating-lions">Tsavo man-eating lions</h2>



<p>Recently, researchers from the Field Museum collaborated with scientists at the <a href="https://illinois.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign</a> to shed light on some previously unexplored aspects of these lions. </p>



<p>The experts used microscopy and genomics to identify some of the species the Tsavo man-eaters consumed.</p>



<p>The findings, now published in the journal <em>Current Biology</em>, uncover compelling new details about these maneless <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honoring-the-king-of-the-jungle-on-world-lion-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predators</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-hairs-in-lions-teeth">Human hairs in lions' teeth </h2>



<p>The original discovery of the hairs began in the early 1990s by Thomas Gnoske - a collections manager at the Field Museum. While examining the lions' skulls for signs of their dietary habits, Gnoske made several intriguing discoveries.</p>



<p>He was the first to conclude that despite being maneless, these lions were fully grown older adult males. In addition, he uncovered that thousands of broken and compacted hairs had accumulated in their damaged teeth throughout their lifetimes.</p>

<p>In 2001, Gnoske, along with Julian Kerbis Peterhans, a professor at <a href="https://www.roosevelt.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roosevelt University</a> and Field Museum adjunct curator, first reported on the damaged condition of the lions' teeth and the presence of hairs embedded in the exposed cavities. </p>



<p>Initial analysis suggested the hairs were from eland, impala, oryx, porcupine, warthog, and zebra.</p>



<p>Fast forward to the present day, and the recent study has enabled a more in-depth examination of the hairs. The microscopic analysis was conducted by Ogeto Mwebi, a senior research scientist at the National Museums of Kenya; and Nduhiu Gitahi, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.uonbi.ac.ke" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Nairobi</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dna-investigation-of-lions-in-tsavo">DNA investigation of lions in Tsavo</h2>



<p>Alida de Flamingh and Ripan S. Malhi from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign led a genomic investigation of the hairs. They focused on four individual hairs and three clumps extracted from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/steller-sea-lions-threatened-by-rising-mercury-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lions</a>' teeth.</p>



<p>The investigation revealed familiar signs of age-related degradation in the nuclear DNA remnants in the lions' teeth. Once authenticated, de Flamingh geared her focus towards mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA).</p>



<p>This type of DNA is inherited from the mother side and can be used to trace lineage through time. So, why focus on mtDNA? For one, it's more abundant than nuclear DNA in cells and easier to reconstruct in potential prey species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dna-of-tsavo-s-man-eating-lions">DNA of Tsavo's man-eating lions</h2>



<p>The researchers built a database of mtDNA profiles of potential prey species and compared them with the mtDNA profiles obtained from the hairs. </p>



<p>“We were even able to get DNA from fragments that were shorter than the nail on your pinky finger,” noted de Flamingh.</p>



<p>“Traditionally, when people want to get DNA from hairs, they’ll focus on the follicle, which is going to have a lot of nuclear DNA in it,” Malhi said. “But these were fragments of hair shafts that were more than 100 years old.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lions-dietary-preferences-revealed">Lions' dietary preferences revealed</h2>



<p>Analysis of the hair DNA identified giraffe, human, oryx, waterbuck, wildebeest, and zebra as prey. Interestingly, there were also hairs that originated from other lions.</p>



<p>The findings suggested that the lions were siblings and had consumed at least two giraffes, besides a zebra likely from the Tsavo region.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, there was even wildebeest mtDNA present. This was unexpected, as the nearest wildebeest population during the late 1890s was about 50 miles away. </p>



<p>In contrast, the absence of buffalo DNA and the presence of only a single buffalo hair was also unexpected. Today, buffalo is the preferred prey for lions in Tsavo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-history-and-science">Linking history and science</h2>



<p>Perhaps the most moving part of this story is the connection to the past. Julian Kerbis Peterhans mentioned a historic facet to this investigation - a handwritten field journal kept by Colonel Patterson during his time in Tsavo.</p>



<p>Patterson's accounts didn't mention buffalo or indigenous cattle, most likely because these populations were devastated by a viral disease called rinderpest brought to Africa from India in the early 1880s.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>Beyond the fascinating insights about the Tsavo man-eaters, this research is a leap forward in scientific exploration. </p>



<p>We now know that we can reconstruct complete mitochondrial genomes from single hair fragments that are over a century old! And, as there are thousands of hairs compacted in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/male-and-female-lions-have-different-social-strategies-for-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lions</a>' teeth over time, further analyses might help reconstruct their diet over time and perhaps pinpoint when they began preying on humans.</p>



<p>The study, supported by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is also a testament to the advancements in biotechnology. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-sources-of-knowledge">Unexpected sources of knowledge </h2>



<p>“As biotechnologies advance, there are unexpected sources of knowledge, in this case genomics, that can be used to inform about the past,” said Ripan Malhi.</p>



<p>“Our results inform on the ecology and diet of lions in the past as well as on the impacts of colonization on life and land in this region of Africa.”</p>



<p>With the methodology created in this study, the possibility of getting DNA from hairs in the broken teeth of more ancient carnivores, dating back hundreds to thousands of years ago, is now a reality. </p>

Disturbing diets of "man-eating" lions from the 19th century discovered

<p>Beneath the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean lies a secret that's been waiting to be told. Scientists have revealed images of an asteroid impact crater buried 300 meters under the ocean floor, shedding new light on Earth's distant past.</p>



<p>The person behind this remarkable find is Dr. Uisdean Nicholson, a geologist from <a href="https://www.hw.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heriot-Watt University</a> who has dedicated years to studying the Earth's hidden structures. </p>



<p>While examining the seabed off the coast of Guinea in West Africa, Nicholson and his team spotted an 8.5-mile-wide depression that piqued their curiosity.</p>



<p>His keen eye led to the discovery of the Nadir Crater, a silent witness to a colossal event from 66 million years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3d-imaging-of-nadir-asteroid-crater">3D imaging of Nadir asteroid crater</h2>



<p>High-resolution, 3D seismic data provided by TGS, a global geophysical company, confirmed their suspicions. </p>



<p>The data proved that an asteroid, estimated to be between 1,476 and 1,640 feet wide, slammed into Earth at the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous period</a>.</p>



<p>The new images paint a picture of the catastrophic event.</p>



<p>"We can tell it came from about 20–40 degrees to the northeast, because of spiraling thrust-generated ridges surrounding the crater's central peak -- those are only formed following a low-angle oblique impact," Dr. Nicholson explained.</p>



<p>"And we think it would have hit Earth at about 12 miles per second, or 45,000 miles per hour, although we still need to confirm this with a new set of impact models."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happened-after-the-impact">What happened after the impact</h2>



<p>Using the seismic data, the scientists reconstructed the immediate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-winter-dinosaurs-were-likely-killed-by-dust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aftermath of the collision</a>. </p>



<p>They observed the formation of an initial bowl-shaped crater, rocks turning into a fluid-like state and flowing upward, and a damage zone covering thousands of square miles. </p>



<p>An enormous tsunami, over 2,600 feet high, would have raced across the Atlantic as a result.</p>



<p>"There are around 20 confirmed marine craters worldwide, and none of them has been captured in anything close to this level of detail. It's exquisite," said Dr. Nicholson. </p>



<p>He likened the advancement in imaging to the evolution of ultrasounds, saying, "We've gone from 2D, fuzzy imaging to amazing high-resolution imaging of the Nadir Crater."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-echoes-of-the-dinosaur-killing-impact">Echoes of the dinosaur-killing impact</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the Nadir Crater is the same age as the 125-mile-wide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-chicxulub-caused-dinosaurs-extinction-event-traced-to-origin-kuiper-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chicxulub impact crater</a> in Mexico, which is widely believed to have led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. </p>



<p>This raises questions about whether Earth was struck by multiple asteroids around the same time.</p>

<p>The team isn't stopping at images. "We've applied to IODP3, which is a new international drilling program, to drill into the seabed and recover cores from the crater," Dr. Nicholson shared. </p>



<p>"These will give us more information about the shock pressures experienced during impact and the precise age and sequence of events that occurred after this event."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asteroid-crater-insights">Asteroid crater insights</h2>



<p>Collaborators are buzzing with excitement. </p>



<p>"3D seismic images of a fully preserved impact crater are a fantastic research opportunity that can allow us to consider how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-equivalent-of-a-blindfolded-full-court-shot-caused-the-dinosaur-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact processes and craters</a> scale with the size of the impactor both for understanding the evolution of the Earth and other worlds," Dr. Sean Gulick from the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Texas</a> at Austin noted.</p>



<p>"We see pristine impact craters on airless bodies like the moon, but don't have subsurface structural information," Dr. Veronica Bray of the University of Arizona added.</p>



<p>"On the Earth, that is reversed: We have structural data from seismics, field mapping and drill cores, but the craters are usually very eroded at the surface. The new 3D seismic imaging of Nadir gives us both. It's a startlingly good look at an impact crater!"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asteroid-threats-today-the-case-of-bennu">Asteroid threats today: The case of Bennu</h2>



<p>While ancient impacts are fascinating, they also serve as a reminder of potential dangers lurking in space. </p>



<p>The asteroid Bennu, roughly 1,300 feet in diameter, is considered the most hazardous object in near-Earth orbit. </p>



<p>According to NASA scientists, its total impact probability through the year 2300 is about 1 in 1,750 (or 0.057%).</p>



<p>They've also pinpointed September 24, 2182, as the most significant single date for a potential impact, with a probability of 1 in 2,700 (or about 0.037%). </p>



<p>It's a sobering thought that events like the one that created the Nadir Crater could happen again.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-future-by-studying-the-past">Preparing for the future by studying the past</h2>



<p>Dr. Nicholson pointed out, "The closest humans have come to seeing something like this is the 1908 Tunguska event, when a 50-meter asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere and exploded in the skies above Siberia."</p>



<p>The data from the Nadir Crater offers an unprecedented chance to study impact craters in detail. </p>



<p>"The new 3D seismic data across the whole Nadir Crater is an unprecedented opportunity to test impact crater hypotheses, develop new models of crater formation in the marine environment and understand the consequences of such an event," he said.</p>



<p>This discovery doesn't just peel back layers of sediment, it also peels back layers of time. By exploring the Nadir Crater, scientists hope to unlock secrets about Earth's past and better prepare for future asteroid encounters.</p>

<p>Ever wondered how an electronic tongue powered by artificial intelligence (AI) could enhance our ability to distinguish tastes? </p>



<p>Researchers have recently unveiled this innovative technology, which identifies subtle differences in liquids. </p>



<p>A team at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a> led the research, demonstrating how AI could redefine how we perceive and analyze <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-trained-an-ai-algorithm-to-taste-wine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flavors</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-processes-involved-in-taste">Biological processes involved in taste</h2>



<p>The electronic tongue is capable of identifying differences in liquids, such as milk with varying water content, diverse sodas, coffee blends, and even signs of spoilage in fruit juices. </p>



<p>“We’re trying to make an artificial tongue, but the process of how we experience different foods involves more than just the tongue,” said Saptarshi Das, professor of engineering science and mechanics.</p>



<p>Professor Das explained how the electronic tongue mimics the biological processes involved in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/taste-buds-are-the-first-line-of-defense-against-eating-too-much-and-too-fast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taste</a>, which go beyond the basic five taste categories.</p>



<p>To artificially imitate the gustatory cortex, the researchers developed a neural network, a machine learning algorithm that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-invent-computer-that-operates-just-like-the-human-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mimics the human brain</a>. </p>



<p>Study co-author Harikrishnan Ravichandran is a doctoral student in engineering science and mechanics.</p>



<p>"In this work, we’re considering several chemicals to see if the sensors can accurately detect them, and furthermore, whether they can detect minute differences between similar foods and discern instances of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/keeping-leafy-green-vegetables-safe-until-ready-to-eat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food safety</a> concerns," said Ravichandran.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ion-sensitive-field-effect-transistors">Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors </h2>



<p>The experts noted that ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) have emerged as indispensable tools in chemosensing applications. </p>



<p>"ISFETs operate by converting changes in the composition of chemical solutions into electrical signals, making them ideal for environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and industrial process control," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"Recent advancements in ISFET technology, including functionalized multiplexed arrays and advanced data analytics, have improved their performance."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-across-various-fields">Applications across various fields</h2>



<p>The electronic tongue can broadly detect and classify numerous substances, assessing their quality, authenticity, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shellfish-waste-can-be-used-for-fresher-safer-produce/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">freshness</a> with remarkable precision.</p>



<p>This comprehensive approach not only holds the potential to revolutionize food safety and production but also extends its applications to medical diagnostics and beyond.</p>



<p>According to study lead author Andrew Pannone, the AI reached a near ideal inference accuracy of more than 95% when utilizing the machine-derived figures of merit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decision-making-process-of-artificial-intelligence">Decision-making process of artificial intelligence </h2>



<p>To gain deeper insights into the AI’s decision-making process, the team applied Shapley additive explanations - an advanced method grounded in game theory.</p>



<p>This technique allowed the researchers to analyze how the AI weighed various factors in its assessments, providing a clearer view into the reasoning behind each decision.</p>



<p>“We found that the network looked at more subtle characteristics in the data - things we, as humans, struggle to define properly,” explained Professor Das. This highlights how the neural network’s holistic approach mitigates variations that might occur daily.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-the-electronic-tongue">Future of the electronic tongue</h2>



<p>Professor Das noted that the electronic tongue’s capabilities are “limited only by the data on which it is trained,” suggesting future applications in medical diagnostics.</p>



<p>“We figured out that we can live with imperfection. And that’s what nature is - it’s full of imperfections, but it can still make robust decisions, just like our electronic tongue.”</p>



<p>According to Professor Das, the electronic tongue's capabilities are only limited by the data it is trained on, making it potentially applicable in medical diagnostics and various industries.</p>



<p>A significant advantage lies in the sensor's robustness, a quality that could support broad deployment across industries, despite day-to-day variations.</p>



<p>Furthermore, these sensors do not need to be identical, making them more practical and cost-effective. Just like in nature, the electronic tongue can make robust decisions amid imperfections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-versatility-of-the-electronic-tongue">Versatility of the electronic tongue</h2>

<p>NASA is gearing up for an ambitious mission that could reshape our understanding of life in the universe. The Europa Clipper spacecraft is preparing to launch this week, aiming to discover if the hidden ocean beneath Jupiter's moon Europa holds the ingredients necessary for life.</p>



<p>Scheduled to lift off no earlier than Monday, October 14, the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/europa-clipper/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa Clipper</a> will embark on its journey from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. </p>



<p>The spacecraft will ride atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, marking a significant milestone in space exploration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-europa-matters">Why Europa matters</h2>



<p>Steve Vance, an astrobiologist and geophysicist on the Europa Clipper science team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>), shared his excitement about the mission. </p>



<p>"Non-icy materials on the surface could get moved into deep interior pockets of briny water within the icy shell," he said. "Some might be large enough to be considered lakes, or at least ponds."</p>



<p>Europa, one of Jupiter's largest moons, has captivated scientists for decades. Beneath its thick ice crust lies a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-jupiter-moon-europa-deep-ocean-shifting-icy-shell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vast ocean of liquid water</a> -- more than all of Earth's oceans combined. </p>



<p>The big question is whether this ocean could harbor life. The Europa Clipper <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-mission-set-to-search-for-life-on-jupiters-ocean-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mission aims to find out</a> by investigating the moon's potential habitability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-and-strategic-flight-path">Long and strategic flight path</h2>



<p>To maximize the mission's success, Europa Clipper will follow an elongated, looping orbit around Jupiter. </p>



<p>This trajectory minimizes exposure to Jupiter's intense radiation while allowing the spacecraft to swoop in for close passes -- 49 flybys in total -- by Europa. </p>

<p>During these encounters, the spacecraft will gather valuable data about the moon's surface and subsurface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-beneath-europa-s-icy-shell">Life beneath Europa's icy shell?</h2>



<p>One of the mission's main objectives is to understand how thick Europa's icy shell is and what's happening beneath it. </p>



<p>Using a suite of sophisticated instruments, scientists hope to "see" through the ice and gain insights into the underlying ocean. </p>



<p>They'll also search for materials on the surface that might have come from below, look for organic compounds -- the building blocks of life -- and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/iron-snow-brings-hope-for-finding-life-on-jupiters-moon-europa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sample any gases</a> escaping from the moon.</p>



<p>High-resolution images are crucial for studying Europa's geology. The Europa Imaging System (<a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/eis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EIS</a>) is designed for this task. </p>



<p>"The EIS imagers will give us incredibly high-resolution images to understand how Europa’s surface evolved and is continuing to change," said Dr. Morgan Cable, a planetary scientist at JPL and member of the Europa Clipper team. </p>



<p>These images will help researchers identify features like cracks, ridges, and possibly active plumes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-water-plumes">Searching for water plumes</h2>



<p>In 2005, NASA's Cassini mission spotted giant plumes of water vapor erupting from Saturn's moon Enceladus. Scientists suspect Europa might exhibit similar activity. </p>



<p>The Europa Ultraviolet Spectrograph (<a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/europa-uvs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa-UVS</a>) will search for these water plumes and analyze any material venting into space. Detecting plumes would offer a direct glimpse into the subsurface ocean.</p>

<p>Even if Europa doesn't have active plumes, the spacecraft is equipped to study tiny amounts of gas and dust ejected from the surface. Instruments like <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/maspex/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MASPEX</a> (Mass Spectrometer for Planetary Exploration/Europa) and <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/suda/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SUDA</a> (Surface Dust Analyzer) will collect and analyze these particles. </p>



<p>"The spacecraft will study gas and grains coming off Europa by sticking out its tongue and tasting those grains, breathing in those gases," said Dr. Morgan Cable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-the-magnetic-field">Investigating the magnetic field</h2>



<p>To learn more about the ocean's depth and salinity, the mission will measure Europa's induced magnetic field using the Europa Clipper Magnetometer (<a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/ecm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ECM</a>). </p>



<p>This data, combined with measurements from the Plasma Instrument for Magnetic Sounding (PIMS), will help scientists understand the moon's internal structure and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-could-survive-near-surface-europa-enceladus-moons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">properties of its ocean</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peering-into-the-ice">Peering into the ice</h2>



<p>The Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding to Near-surface (<a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/reason/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">REASON</a>) instrument will peer up to 18 miles into Europa's ice shell. </p>



<p>By sending radar waves into the ice, REASON can map its layers and possibly detect pockets of water. This information is vital for assessing whether the ice shell itself could be a habitable environment.</p>



<p>Using data collected during the mission, scientists will create computer models of Europa's interior. </p>



<p>Steve Vance explained, "Using the data gathered to inform <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-moon-europa-creates-enormous-amount-of-oxygen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extensive computer modeling</a> of Europa’s interior structure also could reveal the ocean’s composition and allow estimates of its temperature profile." </p>



<p>Understanding these factors is key to determining the moon's potential to support life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quest-for-life-on-europa-and-beyond-earth">Quest for life on Europa and beyond Earth</h2>



<p>The Europa Clipper mission represents a significant step in our quest to find life beyond our planet. </p>



<p>Discovering even the simplest life forms on Europa would have profound implications for science and philosophy. </p>



<p>It would suggest that life might be common in the universe, especially in environments once considered inhospitable.</p>



<p>As with any pioneering mission, Europa Clipper is expected to raise new questions. </p>



<p>"It’s almost certain Europa Clipper will raise as many questions or more than it answers -- a whole different class than the ones we’ve been thinking of for the last 25 years," Vance said. </p>



<p>The findings could pave the way for future missions, perhaps even landing probes on Europa's surface.</p>

NASA is set to find out this week if life exists in the alien ocean of Jupiter's moon Europa

NASA is gearing up for an ambitious mission that could...

<p>The sun's heat is one of the most fascinating mysteries of the solar system. While the surface of our star burns at an intense 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, its outer atmosphere - known as the solar corona - reaches a staggering 2 million degrees Fahrenheit. That’s about 200 times hotter than the surface.</p>



<p>This strange phenomenon, first discovered in 1939, has puzzled scientists for decades. Despite many studies and countless hours of research, the mechanism behind this drastic temperature increase has remained elusive.</p>



<p>But now, researchers may have found a clue. A team led by Sayak Bose at the U.S. Department of Energy’s <a href="https://www.pppl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory</a> (PPPL) believes they have unlocked part of the sun’s mystery. </p>



<p>The research suggests that the extreme heating in regions called coronal holes - areas of the corona with lower density and open magnetic field lines - may be driven by reflected plasma waves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-puzzle-of-the-sun-s-mysterious-heat">The puzzle of the sun's mysterious heat</h2>



<p>In a significant step forward, the team discovered that reflected Alfvén waves could explain the mysterious heat of the sun’s atmosphere.</p>



<p>“Scientists knew that coronal holes have high temperatures, but the underlying mechanism responsible for the heating is not well understood,” said Bose. </p>



<p>“Our findings reveal that plasma wave reflection can do the job. This is the first laboratory experiment demonstrating that Alfvén waves reflect under conditions relevant to coronal holes.”</p>



<p>Alfvén waves, predicted by Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén, act similarly to the vibrations of a plucked guitar string, except they’re plasma waves driven by oscillating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/milky-way-galaxy-is-surrounded-by-massive-magnetic-fields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic fields</a>. </p>



<p>The research provides the first experimental evidence that these waves can reflect back under the unique conditions around coronal holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strange-heating-of-coronal-holes">Strange heating of coronal holes </h2>



<p>Using the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) at UCLA, Bose and his team generated Alfvén waves within a 20-meter plasma column, carefully simulating the conditions present around <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-coronal-hole-from-geomagnetic-storm-prompts-aurora-alert-for-northern-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar coronal holes</a>. </p>



<p>The experiment revealed that, under specific conditions of plasma density and magnetic field strength, these waves could indeed reflect off the boundaries and travel back toward their origin.</p>



<p>This reflected wave movement generated turbulence within the plasma, which, in turn, could heat the surrounding particles, offering a plausible explanation for the intense temperatures observed in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/solar-storm-alert-auroras-radio-blackouts-expected-weekend-august-9-11-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun’s outer atmosphere</a>.</p>



<p>“Physicists have long hypothesized that Alfvén wave reflection could explain the strange heating of coronal holes," said Jason TenBarge, a visiting research scholar at PPPL.</p>



<p>"This work offers the first experimental verification that Alfvén wave reflection is not only possible, but also that the reflected energy is sufficient enough to heat the coronal holes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-our-understanding-of-the-sun">Improving our understanding of the sun</h2>



<p>To further validate their findings, the team conducted detailed computer simulations that replicated the experimental setup and confirmed the results observed in the lab. </p>



<p>The simulations reinforced the team's conclusions by demonstrating that Alfvén wave reflections could occur under conditions akin to those in the solar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-is-the-suns-corona-hotter-than-its-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corona</a>, providing a robust model for the heating mechanism.</p>



<p>“We regularly conduct multiple checks to ensure the accuracy of our observed results, and simulation was one such step," said Bose.</p>



<p>"The physics of Alfvén wave reflection is intricate and utterly fascinating! It’s incredible how rudimentary physics lab experiments and simulations can significantly improve our understanding of natural systems like our sun.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-space-weather">Implications for space weather</h2>



<p>Understanding the mysterious heat of the sun's atmosphere has practical implications beyond academic interest. </p>



<p>This phenomenon affects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-solar-wind-which-creates-beautiful-auroras-on-earth-is-now-less-mysterious/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar winds</a>, which are streams of charged particles emitted from the sun that can influence Earth’s magnetic field. These winds impact satellite operations, GPS accuracy, and even power grids.</p>



<p>By shedding light on the role of Alfvén waves in coronal heating, this research could improve predictions of solar activity and help protect critical technology here on Earth.</p>



<p>Moreover, the confirmation of Alfvén wave reflection in the lab marks a significant step forward in solar research. This breakthrough allows scientists to refine their models of solar phenomena like solar flares and coronal mass ejections.</p>



<p>Thanks to this experimental leap, researchers now have a powerful new tool to better understand the complex dynamics of our closest star.</p>

<p>Weather forecasting is a tricky business. We rely on it to plan our daily activities, prepare for natural disasters, and even to decide what to wear each day. Yet, despite advances in technology, we only get forecasts about 10 days into the future.</p>



<p>Why so? Small changes in atmospheric and surface conditions can trigger larger, unpredictable shifts in weather patterns. </p>



<p>For example, consider the devastating Pacific Northwest heat wave in June 2021. Power lines melted, crops were destroyed, and hundreds of people lost their lives. A longer lead time on forecasts could have helped communities better prepare for the extreme heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adjoint-models-in-weather-forecasting">Adjoint models in weather forecasting</h2>



<p>Weather scientists commonly turn to adjoint models to gauge how susceptible a forecast is to errors in initial conditions. Ever wondered how a slight tweak in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-summer-of-2024-could-make-it-the-hottest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature</a> or atmospheric water vapor can alter forecast results?</p>



<p>These models help answer that. They clarify the linkage between initial conditions and forecasted errors. Thus, scientists can adjust until they discover the set of initial conditions that yield the most accurate forecast.</p>



<p>However, there is a hitch. Running these models demands substantial financial and computing resources. And they can only measure sensitivities up to five days ahead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-learning-in-weather-forecasting">Deep learning in weather forecasting</h2>



<p>Researchers in the <a href="https://atmos.uw.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Atmospheric Sciences</a> at the University of Washington have been exploring whether deep learning could offer an efficient and more precise method to determine the optimal set of initial conditions for a 10-day forecast.</p>



<p>To test their hypothesis, the experts modeled forecasts of the disastrous June 2021 Pacific Northwest heat wave. They utilized two different forecasting models: Google DeepMind's GraphCast model and Huawei Cloud's Pangu-Weather model.</p>



<p>The scientists wanted to check if the models operated similarly and how they stacked up against the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">actual events of the heat wave</a>. To ensure unbiased results, they excluded the heat wave data from the dataset used to train the models.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evaluation-of-advanced-models">Evaluation of advanced models</h2>



<p>The researchers carried out a rigorous comparison between the output of the GraphCast and Pangu-Weather models and actual meteorological data from the period of the June 2021 heat wave. </p>



<p>They focused on the accuracy of temperature predictions, the models' ability to anticipate extreme conditions, and their computational efficiency. </p>



<p>Preliminary results revealed that both models exhibited a high degree of accuracy, with Pangu-Weather displaying a slight edge in long-term temperature prediction. </p>



<p>The advanced models showed promising potential in enhancing forecast accuracy and retiming their delivery, offering valuable insights for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-and-severe-solar-storms-will-continue-through-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emergent situations</a> such as heat waves.</p>

<p>Yet, challenges persist, particularly in ensuring these models can process vast datasets in real-time scenarios and integrate seamlessly into existing forecasting frameworks. </p>



<p>Additionally, there is a growing need for collaboration between meteorologists, data scientists, and policymakers to maximize the utility of these technological advancements. </p>



<p>As research continues to unfold, these novel approaches hold the potential to revolutionize weather forecasting, resulting in better community preparedness and resilience against climate anomalies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scaling-deep-learning">Scaling deep learning</h2>



<p>Scaling deep learning approaches for global weather forecasts requires a comprehensive strategy to manage data heterogeneity, computational intensity, and energy consumption. </p>



<p>The vast and varied data sources - from satellite imagery to oceanic sensor readings - demand that models harmonize inputs with differing resolutions and formats.</p>



<p>The computational power needed to handle such voluminous and diverse datasets is substantial, raising concerns about environmental impact due to energy-intensive processes. </p>



<p>Consequently, researchers are exploring energy-efficient algorithms and innovative hardware solutions to mitigate these challenges. Additionally, there is a critical need for robust validation frameworks to ensure these models' generalizability across diverse climatic regions and conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-driven-weather-forecasting">AI-driven weather forecasting</h2>



<p>The integration of artificial intelligence in weather forecasting introduces several ethical considerations that warrant careful examination. </p>



<p>Predominantly, the question of data privacy emerges, as intricate datasets often include sensitive geolocation information. Additionally, there is an inherent risk of algorithmic bias, where disparities in data collection can skew predictions, disproportionately affecting certain populations or regions. </p>



<p>Transparency and accountability in AI decision-making processes are imperative to ensure equitable access to advanced forecasting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-is-expected-to-exceed-the-1-5c-warming-limit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">technologies</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reduction-in-forecast-errors">Reduction in forecast errors</h2>



<p>The results were nothing short of astonishing. Employing deep learning to pinpoint optimal initial conditions led to a massive 94% reduction in 10-day forecast errors in the GraphCast model.</p>



<p>A similar drop in errors was noted when the method was applied to the Pangu-Weather model. Remarkably, the new technique improved forecasts as much as 23 days in advance.</p>



<p>So, do we stand at the threshold of a new era in weather forecasting? Can we look forward to forecasts that are not just more accurate, but also offer longer lead times? If the findings are any indication, this might not be too far off.</p>

The newest twist in the tale however is the way climate change affects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-it-still-possible-to-save-the-ocean-from-plastic-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contaminants in ou</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-it-still-possible-to-save-the-ocean-from-plastic-pollution/">r seas</a>.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Rebecca Zitoun, a marine chemist at <a href="https://www.geomar.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GEOMAR</a> Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, and Dr. Saša Marcinek from the <a href="https://www.irb.hr/eng/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ruđer Bošković Institute</a> in Zagreb.</p>



<p>Lead, mercury, cadmium, and other metals don't just enter our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-plastic-pollution-has-become-a-global-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceans</a> through industrial or fossil fuel burning activities. </p>



<p>As it turns out, natural sources of these elements are undergoing changes due to climate factors such as rising sea levels, rivers overflowing, or drying up, and melting sea ice and glaciers. The result? Increased flow and mobilization of contaminants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-metal-contaminants-in-the-ocean">Metal contaminants in the ocean</h2>



<p>The research is the product of a working group of the UN Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (<a href="http://www.gesamp.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GESAMP</a>), with a focus on metal contaminants in the ocean. </p>



<p>Dr. Sylvia Sander, professor of marine mineral resources at GEOMAR and former head of the Marine Environmental Studies Laboratories at IAEA in Monaco, initiated this working group. German contributor Christoph Völker from the AWI is another member of this group.</p>



<p>"Our working group has focused on the effects of climate change and greenhouse gases on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hotspots-of-microplastic-pollution-found-in-the-north-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contaminants</a> in the ocean," explained Dr. Sander.</p>



<p>This rise is mainly due to melting glaciers, thawing permafrost, and coastal erosion. Such an increase in mercury levels poses a significant risk to communities dependent on traditional fishing, as mercury accumulates in the food chain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-contribution-of-human-activities">The contribution of human activities </h2>



<p>"Human activities have increased the global flow of toxic metals such as lead by tenfold and mercury by three to seven times compared to pre-industrial levels," said Dr. Sander.</p>



<p>"Toxic elements like silver are increasingly detectable in&nbsp;coastal waters, originating from coal combustion and the growing use of silver nanoparticles in antibacterial products."</p>

<p>The proliferation of plastics and shipping have further contributed to this issue. They can bind heavy metals such as copper, zinc, and lead, which can then enter the food chain. With <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-diversity-takes-a-hard-hit-near-offshore-platforms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasing exploitation of the oceans</a>, the human contribution of these heavy metals could rise even further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-climate-and-metals">Changing climate and metals</h2>



<p>Climate changes, like warming sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and oxygen depletion, impact trace elements in a variety of ways.</p>



<p>For instance, water temperatures directly influence the bioavailability and uptake of trace elements like mercury in marine organisms. </p>



<p>With higher temperatures, metabolism increases, oxygen solubility reduces, and gill ventilation improves, leading to more metals entering organisms and accumulating in their bodies.</p>



<p>Additionally, as our oceans absorb more human-emitted CO2, their pH levels drop, thus increasing the solubility and bioavailability of metals like copper, zinc, and iron. </p>



<p>This can be particularly damaging with copper, which is highly toxic to many marine organisms at increased concentrations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changes-in-ocean-contaminants">Changes in ocean contaminants </h2>



<p>Human activities have a two-pronged effect on the amount of contaminants in our coastal regions. There is the direct impact where we release pollutants into the environment, and then there is the indirect effect of climate change on natural sources of these elements.</p>



<p>What's concerning is that there is a significant lack of data on how climate change influences contaminants in the ocean. </p>



<p>The working group argues that we need more research into new and under-studied contaminants. They also stress on the need for better models, as well as updating legislation that controls the impact of contaminants in the seas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emerging-challenges">Emerging challenges</h2>



<p>The dual threat of climate change and environmental contamination presents a formidable challenge requiring innovative solutions and collaborative strategies. </p>



<p>One burgeoning area of research is the development of advanced models that provide comprehensive insights into the interaction between climate variables and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-plastic-pollution-lurks-beneath-the-surface-of-rivers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contaminant behavior in marine eco</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-plastic-pollution-lurks-beneath-the-surface-of-rivers/">systems. </a></p>



<p>Such models would enable scientists to predict shifts in contaminant distribution and, more importantly, devise mitigation strategies that prioritize environmental and human health.</p>



<p>In addition, the integration of satellite technology and big data analytics offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance our understanding and monitoring of marine pollution on a global scale.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-oceans-from-toxic-metals">Saving oceans from toxic metals</h2>



<p>"To better understand the impacts on ecosystems and human health, we need to close knowledge gaps on the interactions between pollutants and climate change and develop standardized methods that provide globally comparable data," said Dr. Zitoun.</p>



<p>While there is much we still need to learn, the importance of strengthening marine protection and developing sustainable solutions for vulnerable coastal areas cannot be overstated. Climate change and pollution are complex issues, but addressing them is essential for preserving our oceans.</p>

<p>Have you ever stopped to consider the moon's earthly influence on humans and wildlife? Sure, we're familiar with its role in tides, but it's far from just a celestial object that adorns our night sky.</p>



<p>In a recent twist, a study has found something surprising. The research reveals a startling 45.8 percent spike in wildlife-vehicle collisions during full moon nights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-collisions-during-full-moon">Wildlife collisions during full moon</h2>



<p>Kentaro Iio, a former Texas A&amp;M student, together with Dr. Dominique Lord, a faculty member in the Zachry <a href="https://engineering.tamu.edu/civil/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering</a>, dug into a decade's worth of Texas collision data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By comparing full-moon nights to new-moon nights and the respective <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-wildlife-overlap-is-rapidly-rising-across-the-globe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a>-vehicle collisions, they found that non-wildlife collisions during the same timeframes showed no significant change.</p>



<p>This research highlights the importance of being extra careful while driving on full moon nights. It also gives policymakers food for thought about potential improvements to transportation policy and infrastructure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-full-moon-s-impact-on-wildlife">Full moon's impact on wildlife</h2>



<p>"I compared really dark nights without moon illumination (new moon) to really dark nights with the full moon illumination," Iio said. </p>



<p>"If you include other lunar phases in the analysis, they appear on the horizon at different times each day, making it more difficult for true apples-to-apples comparisons."</p>



<p>Interestingly, this isn't an isolated finding. Other studies conducted in areas such as Spain, Canada and Lithuania reflect similar trends.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Although the illumination is better, it's still nighttime," said Dr. Lord. "When you drive at night, I'm not sure the illumination from the various perspectives is so much greater compared to daytime."</p>



<p>Although, the suggested explanations vary in each case. Iio and Lord believe the rise in wildlife-vehicle collisions is likely tied a mix of elements, like driver fatigue and increased wildlife activity at night, that play their parts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-city-lights-and-rural-routes">City lights and rural routes</h2>



<p>The study's data was also broken down to illuminate rural and urban areas. Interestingly enough, the capital area of Texas was the only one with a lower relative risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions during a full moon, although the difference wasn't significant.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Rural areas tended to have higher collision ratios concerning the&nbsp;full moon&nbsp;than&nbsp;urban areas," Iio said.</p>



<p>Despite the study's compelling findings, several areas remain unexplored. For instance, the study didn't identify the types of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-using-technology-to-protect-our-natural-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a> involved or account for variations in illumination intensity over the years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, incoming studies could fill these gaps and provide a more comprehensive picture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-collision-prevention-during-full-moon">Wildlife collision prevention during full moon</h2>



<p>Let's not forget, each statistic represents a real-life incident. Hence, potential improvements like increased lighting in rural areas, wildlife warning reflectors or boosted emergency services during full moon nights could save lives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As technological advancements continue to reshape our world, emerging innovations hold promise in mitigating wildlife-vehicle collisions. For instance, smart road technology integrates sensors and cameras that can detect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-adversity-reduces-life-expectancy-of-most-mammals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife presence</a>, alerting drivers in real-time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, advances in vehicle technology, such as automatic braking systems and enhanced night vision capabilities, are playing crucial roles in preventing accidents.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Harnessing these innovations, combined with data-driven approaches, can provide a more robust defense against collision-related incidents on full moon nights and beyond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-animal-behavior">Understanding animal behavior</h2>



<p>A key component to addressing wildlife-vehicle collisions during full moon nights involves a deeper understanding of animal behavior in different environmental contexts. </p>



<p>Wildlife activity often escalates during nights illuminated by the full moon, as animals capitalize on the increased visibility for foraging and social interactions. This behavior can vary significantly based on species and local ecological conditions.</p>



<p>By studying these patterns, researchers can develop targeted strategies to mitigate collision risks, such as timing vehicle alerts or implementing seasonal warning systems to correspond with periods of heightened wildlife movement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-awareness-and-education">Public awareness and education</h2>



<p>Beyond technology and data, public awareness and education are critical in reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chemists-could-be-key-to-prevent-animal-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a>-vehicle collisions during full moon. </p>



<p>Educating drivers about the specific risks and challenges posed by driving during full moon nights can empower them to make informed decisions. </p>



<p>Campaigns aimed at highlighting the importance of slowing down in high-risk areas and adopting defensive driving techniques can be particularly effective. </p>



<p>Furthermore, involving community stakeholders in these educational efforts can foster a collaborative approach to problem-solving, encouraging local initiatives that tailor preventive measures to specific regional needs.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the Texas A&amp;M study has opened our eyes to an often overlooked realm - how the moon indirectly influences daily lives of humans and wildlife.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We all know that food is central to survival, but have you considered how the diversity and abundance of food in our surroundings might have played a significant role in our evolution? </p>



<p>A recent study suggests that food diversity in steep mountainous terrains had a significant impact on early human species. The research was led by a team at the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) at <a href="https://pusan.ac.kr/eng/Main.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pusan National University</a> in South Korea</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-allure-of-mountain-diversity">The allure of mountain diversity</h2>



<p>The research team analyzed an extensive dataset of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hominin-fossils-are-a-million-years-older-than-estimated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hominin fossils</a>, artifacts, high-resolution landscape data, and a simulation of Earth’s climate dating back 3-million-years. </p>



<p>The goal was to answer an intriguing question: Why were our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-evolution-was-shaped-by-competition-not-just-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary ancestors</a> more inclined towards mountainous regions than flat landscapes?</p>



<p>Archeological sites show that early human settlements, primarily hominins, were often nestled in or near mountain regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-humans-in-the-mountains">Early humans in the mountains</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-and-why-do-mountains-form-new-theories-for-an-age-old-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mountains</a> are rich in biodiversity due to the climatic shifts caused by variations in elevation. Flora and fauna thrive under diverse environmental conditions, and mountainous regions host a myriad of ecosystems and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/changes-in-vegetation-are-a-key-driver-of-global-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vegetation</a> types, also known as biomes.</p>



<p>Such ecological prosperity drew our early ancestors to these landscapes, providing them with an abundant supply of food resources and a means to withstand climate changes. This concept is the basis of the Diversity Selection Hypothesis.</p>



<p>Elke Zeller is a PhD student from the IBS Center for Climate Physics and lead author of the study.</p>



<p>"When we analyzed the environmental factors that controlled where human species lived, we were surprised to see that terrain steepness was standing out as the dominant one, even more than local climate factors, such as temperature and precipitation," noted Zeller.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balanced-equation-of-mountain-diversity">Balanced equation of mountain diversity</h2>



<p>However, living in these steep regions wasn't exactly easy. The rugged terrain posed considerable challenges, from difficulty navigating the land to high energy consumption.</p>



<p>The researchers assessed how human adaptations over time gradually swayed the cost-benefit equilibrium of residing in such challenging environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adapting-to-steeper-environments">Adapting to steeper environments</h2>



<p>Human resilience is evident in the adaptive journey of early Homo habilis, Homo ergaster, and Homo erectus, who gradually acclimated to steeper environments until about 1 million years ago.</p>



<p>After a brief disappearances, the topographic signal resumes around 700,000 years ago, with the emergence of more culturally advanced species such as Homo heidelbergensis and Homo neanderthalensis. These groups demonstrated higher tolerance for colder and wetter climates and also learned to control fire.</p>



<p>“Whether it’s all a coincidence, or the intensifying glacial climate shifts contributed to the genetic transitions in early humans, remains an open question," said Axel Timmermann, co-author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-puzzle-of-human-evolution">Puzzle of human evolution </h2>



<p>The debate on human evolution and how we adapted to environmental challenges continues to spark scientific discussions worldwide. However, this South Korean team's findings shed light on one piece of the human evolution puzzle.</p>



<p>The analysis suggests that it was indeed beneficial for early human groups to populate mountainous regions, despite the increased energy consumption needed to navigate these environments.</p>



<p>"Our results clearly show that over time hominins adapted to steep terrain and that this trend was likely driven by the regionally increased biodiversity," said Zeller. </p>



<p>The data - averaged over hundreds of thousands of years, spanning different species and continents - confirm that our ancestors were, indeed, “steeplanders.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mountain-life-and-social-bonds">Mountain life and social bonds</h2>



<p>Mountainous regions not only presented a diverse array of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-help-reduce-food-insecurity-in-rural-communities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food resources</a> but also likely influenced early hominin social structures and innovations. </p>



<p>The rugged terrain and varied ecosystems would have required early humans to develop cooperative strategies for survival, as foraging and hunting in these challenging environments often demanded group effort. </p>



<p>This need for collaboration may have encouraged the development of early social bonds and the sharing of resources, leading to more complex social behaviors over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-tool-innovation-in-the-mountains">Human tool innovation in the mountains</h2>



<p>In addition to social adaptation, the challenging environment of mountainous areas likely spurred the invention and refinement of tools. </p>



<p>Early hominins in these regions may have relied on rudimentary tools to navigate the terrain, hunt diverse prey, and process different plant materials. </p>



<p>These innovations allowed them to exploit a broader range of food sources and adapt to the ever-changing conditions found at higher altitudes.</p>



<p>By pushing hominins to adapt both socially and technologically, these steep and varied landscapes may have been a driving force behind some of the earliest forms of human innovation.</p>

<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
