<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.70017" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Insect Conservation and Diversity</em></a><em>.</em></p>

Wasps shine a light on 'dark biodiversity' in rainforests

<p>In the remote, icy stretches of Antarctica, the melting of a massive glacier is picking up speed. This giant, called the Thwaites Glacier, is often referred to as the Doomsday Glacier.</p>



<p>Since 2018, experts leading the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) have been investigating the dynamics of Thwaites.</p>



<p>The researchers have been up close and personal with Thwaites, breaking through ice and using underwater robots to exhaustively study this massive glacier and comprehend its possible downfall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-retreat-of-the-doomsday-glacier">Retreat of the Doomsday Glacier </h2>



<p>The extensive and painstaking research has unveiled some rather disconcerting findings.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/doomsday-glacier-relentlessly-melting-due-to-warm-water-underbelly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thwaites</a> is not just in retreat, but it's retreating at an incredible speed that is set to increase in the future, according to Rob Larter, a marine geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey and an essential member of the ITGC team.</p>



<p>"Thwaites has been retreating for more than 80 years, accelerating considerably over the past 30 years, and our findings indicate it is set to retreat further and faster," noted Dr. Larter. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collapse-of-the-doomsday-glacier">Collapse of the Doomsday Glacier</h2>



<p>When it comes to future forecasts, optimism is scarce. The scientists predict that Thwaites and the Antarctic Ice Sheet could completely collapse within the next 200 years.</p>



<p>The Doomsday Glacier contains enough water to boost global sea levels by more than 2 feet. This amount of sea level rise could put coastal communities underwater worldwide, from Miami and London to Bangladesh and the Pacific Islands.</p>



<p>Making matters even worse is the fact that Thwaites acts similarly to a cork, preventing the colossal Antarctic Ice Sheet from cascading into the ocean. The collapse of the Doomsday Glacier could ultimately cause sea levels to rise by a staggering 10 feet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grounding-line-of-the-thwaites-glacier">Grounding line of the Thwaites Glacier </h2>



<p>Thwaites Glacier, with its mammoth size and perplexing characteristics, presents a formidable challenge to scientists. </p>



<p>The terrain slopes downwards, exposing more ice to the comparably warmer ocean water as it melts. To navigate these unique features, the researchers have been using innovative technologies such as Icefin, an underwater robot shaped like a torpedo.</p>



<p>Icefin was dispatched to the grounding line of the Thwaites Glacier. This is the precarious point where the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vanishing-glaciers-are-revitalizing-mountain-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glacier</a> parts from the seabed to float.</p>



<p>The first sight of the grounding line through Icefin was a landmark moment, equal to the emotional impact of the moon landing, according to Kiya Riverman, a glaciologist at the <a href="https://www.up.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Portland</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fast-paced-melting-of-thwaites">Fast-paced melting of Thwaites </h2>



<p>Images relayed back from Icefin revealed that the glacier is melting in unforeseen ways. Warm ocean water is seeping through deep crevices and stair-like formations in the ice, destabilizing the glacier.</p>



<p>But the discoveries didn't end there. The scientists also used satellite and GPS data to study the effects of tides, finding that seawater was able to push over 6 miles beneath Thwaites. This intrusion of seawater froths warm water under the ice, prompting fast-paced melting.</p>



<p>These discoveries led to further investigations into Thwaites' past through the analysis of marine sediment cores. Julia Wellner, a professor at the University of Houston, determined that Thwaites began its rapid retreat back in the 1940s, most likely triggered by a strong El Niño event.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-irreversible-retreat-of-thwaites">Irreversible retreat of Thwaites </h2>



<p>Despite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/petermann-glacier-melting-has-tripled-due-to-warm-ocean-waters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thwaites</a>' rapid retreat, there was a glimmer of hope amongst the otherwise grim discoveries. Computer simulations revealed that the chances of ice shelves collapsing, setting off a domino effect of plunging ice cliffs into the ocean, are lower than previously feared.</p>



<p>But the Doomsday Glacier is far from secure. Scientists predict that Thwaites and the Antarctic Ice Sheet behind it could vanish by the 23rd Century.</p>



<p>Regardless of whether humans manage to stop burning fossil fuels soon - which isn't currently in the cards - it may unfortunately be too late to prevent the collapse of the Doomsday Glacier.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unified-effort-against-climate-change">Unified effort against climate change</h2>



<p>The potential fate of the Thwaites Glacier underlines the vital need for a worldwide response to climate change. Collaborative projects like the ITGC are crucial for pooling global expertise and resources. </p>



<p>To tackle the challenges posed by Thwaites, scientists are sharing data and conducting interdisciplinary research spanning oceanography, geology, and climate science.</p>



<p>This united effort provides a glimmer of hope that through collective innovation, humanity can devise effective strategies to alleviate the impacts of rising seas and climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vulnerable-regions-of-antarctica">Vulnerable regions of Antarctica </h2>



<p>Thwaites Glacier gets a lot of attention because it could impact global sea levels, but we should also look at other vulnerable areas in Antarctica. The way different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/retreating-glaciers-unleash-a-world-of-ecological-potential/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glaciers</a> interact with the Southern Ocean is a tricky puzzle that researchers are working to figure out.</p>



<p>By understanding these dynamics, scientists aim to better predict scenarios and timelines for global sea level rise. This research also informs climate policies and adaptation strategies for coastal cities worldwide. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncertainty-about-the-future">Uncertainty about the future</h2>



<p>As this phase of the ITGC's profound research concludes, the team emphasizes the need for further studies to truly understand this complex glacier. </p>



<p>“While progress has been made, we still have deep uncertainty about the future,” said Eric Rignot, a glaciologist at the <a href="https://uci.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Irvine</a> and part of <a href="https://thwaitesglacier.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ITGC</a>. “I remain very worried that this sector of Antarctica is already in a state of collapse.”</p>

<p>Seabirds facing challenges of breed survival, including avian flu, have a more interesting life than we thought. The mighty sea waves aren't the only foes these valiant creatures battle.</p>



<p>Pirate birds of the sky - frigatebirds, skuas, and gulls - constantly ambush these birds, resorting to robbery to satiate their hunger. This odd behavior, called kleptoparasitism, has been a natural part of the avian world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deadly-form-of-avian-flu">Deadly form of avian flu</h2>



<p>The animal kingdom is filled with thrill, but do you ever wonder about the potential downsides of such extreme survival strategies?</p>



<p>As it turns out, being a pirate at sea may be riskier than it seems. More often than not, these pirate birds end up contracting a deadly form of avian flu, which has caused a worldwide stir in recent years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pirate-birds-of-the-sky">Pirate birds of the sky</h2>



<p>Picture this - you're a seabird returning from a tiresome hunt, belly full of food for your young ones. But there's a catch - you must outsmart the ever watchful pirates in the sky, who'd happily snatch your hard-earned feast away.</p>



<p>This is the everyday reality of seabirds. Sure, their tormentors can hunt for their food, but why bother when they can easily steal?</p>



<p>The lives of these seabirds are incredibly vital to the health of marine ecosystems. Seabirds are scattered across all oceans, their guano (droppings) shaping the soil and plant communities on many islands. </p>



<p>However, a shocking 155 of the world's 362 seabird species are teetering on the edge of extinction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-faced-by-seabirds">Threats faced by seabirds</h2>



<p>Seabirds live long lives, raising a single chick every one or two years, making recovery from population declines tediously slow.</p>



<p>The threats they face are numerous and grave - from invasive predators and overfishing to climate change and habitat loss. The threat that could be the final nail in the coffin for some species is disease.</p>



<p>According to the research, published in the journal <em>Conservation Letters</em>, the new strain of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-flu-is-now-spreading-from-mammal-to-mammal-alarming-health-officials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">avian flu virus</a> is proving to be particularly lethal, killing millions of birds worldwide.</p>



<p>This highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain is of particular concern, not only due to its swift propagation but also its ability to infect and kill marine mammals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pirate-birds-and-avian-flu">Pirate birds and avian flu</h2>



<p>The research has shown that pirate birds indulging in food-stealing are at an even higher risk of contracting this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-bird-flu-manage-to-infect-mammal-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deadly flu virus</a>.</p>



<p>The scientists who assisted in this research have painted a grave picture. When a great skua makes a gannet regurgitate its food through harassment, the skua doesn't realize that it's not just the meal it's consuming - it's also swallowing the virus lurking in the gannet's saliva.</p>



<p>Swift and vast in their range, these pirate birds can quickly escalate the spread of the flu virus. The situation might lead to outbreaks in new populations or places that stand a significant distance apart.</p>



<p>Scientists have seen alarming evidence of this behavior, with skuas being some of the first to show H5N1 infections at various new locations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-travels-of-the-frigatebird">Travels of the frigatebird</h2>



<p>Frigatebirds, known for their impressive red pouches, often traverse tens of thousands of kilometers (over 6,200 miles) across oceans. Their journeys, broken up by “island-hopping,” create ample opportunities for them to encounter and potentially infect other seabirds.</p>



<p>Although the virus is now widespread, some parts of the world remain untouched. But for how long? </p>



<p>We can use infected skuas, frigatebirds, and gulls as early warning systems to alert us when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/raw-milk-may-transmit-bird-flu-virus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virus</a> arrives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controlling-flu-outbreaks-in-seabirds">Controlling flu outbreaks in seabirds</h2>



<p>With the rapid spread of the HPAI virus among seabird populations, urgent actions are necessary to mitigate its impact. </p>



<p>Conservationists advocate for increased monitoring of seabird colonies, employing satellite tracking to understand the movements of infected birds better and preemptively manage potential hotspots. </p>



<p>Additionally, conservation agencies are focusing on biosecurity measures that aim to minimize human-induced transmission and limit interactions between domestic poultry and wild birds. </p>



<p>Public education plays a crucial role, raising awareness about preventing disease spread and protecting both avian and human health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-international-cooperation">Role of international cooperation</h2>



<p>Addressing the avian flu threat requires collaboration across nations, reflecting the global nature of seabird migratory patterns. </p>



<p>International organizations such as BirdLife International and the United Nations Environment Programme are working together to develop global strategies that align <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cattle-may-become-a-permanent-host-for-bird-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a> with disease management. </p>



<p>Countries are encouraged to share data, research findings, and resources to collectively combat this pervasive threat. </p>



<p>By promoting cooperation, the international community can enhance its capacity to respond effectively and work towards securing a healthier future for the planet's seabird populations.</p>

Pirate birds who steal food are spreading a deadly flu strain

<p>New research reveals a potential link between diabetes drugs and a reduced risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases.</p>



<p>According to a recent study published by the American Academy of Neurology, certain diabetes drugs may significantly lower the risk of diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diabetes-medications-and-neuroprotection">Diabetes medications and neuroprotection</h2>



<p>The prime focus of the study was a class of diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, or SGLT2 inhibitors. </p>



<p>These gliflozins play an essential role in maintaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-become-hangry-when-their-blood-sugar-is-low/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blood sugar</a> levels. They achieve this by prompting the kidneys to dispel <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-sugar-sources-are-key-to-preventing-childhood-obesity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sugar</a> from the body through urination.</p>



<p>Dr. Minyoung Lee of <a href="https://medicine.yonsei.ac.kr/medicine-en/index.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yonsei University College of Medicine</a> in South Korea emphasized the significance of the research.</p>



<p>“We know that these neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s disease are common, and the number of cases is growing as the population ages, and people with diabetes are at increased risk of cognitive impairment, so it’s encouraging to see that this class of drugs may provide some protection,” said Dr. Lee.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comparing-diabetes-medications">Comparing diabetes medications</h2>



<p>The researchers took a retrospective approach, analyzing individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who started diabetes medication between 2014 and 2019 in South Korea.</p>



<p>Participants were segregated into two groups. One group was administered SGLT2 inhibitors, while the other was given alternative oral diabetes medications. </p>



<p>Over a period of roughly two years for the SGLT2 group and four years for the other group, the researchers tracked whether the participants developed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dementia-was-extremely-rare-in-ancient-times-so-why-is-it-now-so-prevalent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a> or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-plays-an-unexpected-role-in-movement-and-parkinsons-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Parkinson's disease</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-incidence-rates-of-dementia-and-parkinson-s">Incidence rates of dementia and Parkinson’s </h2>



<p>Among the 358,862 participants, who had an average age of 58, a total of 6,837 developed dementia or Parkinson’s disease during the study period. The incidence rates differed significantly across both groups.</p>



<p>For <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-disease-earliest-biomarker-protein-psd-95-identified/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer's disease</a>, those taking SGLT2 inhibitors had an incidence rate of 39.7 cases per 10,000 person-years. For those on other diabetes drugs, the incidence rate stood at 63.7 cases.</p>



<p>Similarly, for vascular dementia, the incidence rate was notably lower for the SGLT2 group (10.6) compared to the group on other diabetes medications (18.7). For Parkinson’s disease, those on SGLT2 inhibitors also had a lower incidence rate (9.3) compared to their counterparts (13.7).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lower-dementia-and-parkinson-s-risk">Lower dementia and Parkinson’s risk</h2>



<p>After adjusting for factors such as complications from diabetes and medications, the researchers found that SGLT2 inhibitor use was correlated with a 20% decrease in the risk of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and a 30% decreased risk of developing vascular dementia.</p>



<p>“The results are generally consistent even after adjusting for factors like blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and kidney function,” said Dr. Lee. “More research is needed to validate the long-term validity of these findings.”</p>



<p>Since participants were followed for less than five years, Dr. Lee noted that it’s possible that some participants could still develop dementia or Parkinson’s later on.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>This study opens the door to new possibilities in managing not only diabetes but also in preventing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s. </p>



<p>As populations age and cases of dementia rise, these findings provide hope for patients and healthcare professionals alike.</p>



<p>However, while the results are promising, experts caution that further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on brain health. </p>



<p>Larger clinical trials and extended follow-up periods could help determine whether these medications should play a more central role in preventing neurodegenerative diseases. </p>



<p>Additionally, researchers are looking into whether similar benefits could be observed in other types of diabetes treatments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diabetes-drugs-and-cognitive-health">Diabetes drugs and cognitive health </h2>

<p>Despite years of extensive research, black holes have remained largely enigmatic. In a striking revelation, an international team of scientists has unearthed new insights using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.</p>

<p>These supermassive black holes, each weighing more than a billion suns, raise intriguing questions about their rapid formation and extraordinary growth.</p>



<p>"Many of these objects seem to be more massive than we originally thought they could be at such early times - either they formed very massive or they grew extremely quickly," explained study co-author Alice Young from Stockholm University.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-after-the-big-bang">Black holes after the Big Bang</h2>



<p>Shortly after the Big Bang, the universe was a dense, hot place filled with primordial matter. As this matter began to cool and clump together, black holes likely formed from the collapse of the first massive stars, known as Population III stars. </p>



<p>These stars were larger than any we observe today, and their deaths resulted in the formation of early black holes.</p>



<p>Some black holes formed in this era may have grown rapidly through accretion of gas or merging with other black holes, leading to the formation of supermassive black holes. These early supermassive black holes are thought to power quasars, the highly luminous objects found in the centers of galaxies. </p>



<p>The discovery of quasars as far back as about 13 billion years ago suggests that some black holes reached masses of millions to billions of times the Sun's mass quite early in the universe's history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-black-hole-mystery">Unraveling the black hole mystery</h2>



<p>By surveying a population of faint galaxies during the universe's infancy, the scientists discovered variations in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxy-with-an-ultra-bright-core-is-concealing-a-secret/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brightness of galaxies</a>. These variations are considered as hallmark indicators of black holes.</p>



<p>While previous methods had been unable to identify the existence of these black holes, the Stockholm University team's techniques proved to be far more revealing.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that some black holes may have formed due to the collapse of massive, pristine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/18-black-holes-captured-devouring-nearby-stars-in-dramatic-tidal-disruption-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> during the universe’s first billion years. </p>



<p>These kinds of stars are uniquely tied to the early universe, as later-generation stars are contaminated by remnants of stars that have previously lived and died.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-black-hole-formation">Insights into black hole formation </h2>



<p>Other speculations for black hole formation include collapsing gas clouds, star mergers in vast clusters, and so-called "primordial" black holes that formed in the first few seconds after the big bang. </p>



<p>New insights into black hole formation are instrumental in constructing more accurate models of galaxy formation.</p>



<p>"The formation mechanism of early black holes is an important part of the puzzle of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-galaxy-formation-occurred-much-faster-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy evolution</a>," noted study lead author Matthew Hayes.</p>



<p>"Together with models for how black holes grow, galaxy evolution calculations can now be placed on a more physically motivated footing, with an accurate scheme for how black holes came into existence from collapsing massive stars."</p>

<p>The Hammerschmiede fossil site in Germany has revealed a captivating story about the panda's diet about 11.5 million years ago. Unearthing the secrets buried deep within this site has rewritten part of evolutionary history. </p>



<p>But could you imagine that the only species of bear found in this site was related to our beloved, bamboo-chomping giant panda? And, it didn't much care for bamboo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-ancient-predators">Studying ancient predators</h2>



<p>The study was conducted by an international group of experts led by Professor Madelaine Böhme from the Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a>.</p>



<p>The team analyzed the dietary and lifestyle habits of 28 predator species from the Hammerschmiede that no longer roam our planet.</p>



<p>The findings have been detailed in two publications in the journals <em>Papers in Palaeontology</em> and<em> Geobios</em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-excavations-at-hammerschmiede">Excavations at Hammerschmiede</h2>



<p>In 2019, Hammerschmiede had the world buzzing with the discovery of the earliest great ape, Danuvius guggenmosi, which moved around on two legs approximately 11.5 million years ago.</p>



<p>The most recent excavations led by Professor Böhme have turned up an impressive variety of 166 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coelacanth-ngamugawi-wirngarri-new-species-living-fossil-fish-survived-over-400-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossilized species</a>.</p>



<p>"Such a flourishing ecosystem offers a wealth of ecological niches for the species that live in it," said Böhme.</p>



<p>These animals had versatile lifestyles - some lived in the water and some lived on land. Others were adept tree climbers, which allowed them to adapt well to the forested river landscape of the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diet-of-an-ancient-panda">Diet of an ancient panda </h2>



<p>The only bear species native to Hammerschmiede - known as Kretzoiarctos beatrix - shares an ancient lineage with the modern giant panda.</p>



<p>Intriguingly, the teeth of Kretzoiarctos beatrix bear similarities to those seen in pandas. However, unlike modern pandas with their bamboo-exclusive diet, Kretzoiarctos beatrix had a varied diet similar to today's brown bears.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-herbivorous-diet-of-modern-pandas">Herbivorous diet of modern pandas</h2>



<p>Dr. Nikolaos Kargopoulos from the University of Tübingen and <a href="https://www.uct.ac.za" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cape Town</a> is the lead author of the new studies.</p>



<p>"Today's giant pandas are part of the group of carnivores in the zoological taxonomy, but in fact, they live exclusively on plants. They've specialized in a hard vegetable diet, specifically of bamboo," noted Dr. Kargopoulos.</p>



<p>This adaptation to such a dedicated herbivorous diet by pandas, who were originally carnivores, is of significant scientific interest, said Dr. Kargopoulos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dental-clues-about-panda-ancestors">Dental clues about panda ancestors </h2>



<p>The first study by the research team decoded the diet of Kretzoiarctos using the macro- and micromorphology of fossilized teeth. These dental clues allow scientists to learn about an animal's dietary habits just before its death.</p>



<p>Most intriguingly, the investigation confirmed that the diet of Kretzoiarctos beatrix was not restricted to hard plants like modern pandas nor purely carnivorous like polar bears. Its diet mirrored that of a modern brown bear - a mix of plant and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protemnodon-kangaroo-fossils-may-explain-their-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal elements</a>.</p>



<p>"It turns out that Kretzoiarctos beatrix, the oldest of the pandas was a generalist. Specialization in the panda's diet only came about late in its evolution," said Böhme.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diverse-species-found-at-hammerschmiede">Diverse species found at Hammerschmiede</h2>



<p>In addition to the panda, 27 predator species were identified at the Hammerschmiede site. These animals ranged from tiny, weasel-like beings weighing less than a kilogram, to hefty hyenas and saber-toothed tigers weighing over 100 kilograms.</p>



<p>"Their respective primary sources of food were very varied: There were pure carnivores such as the saber-tooth tiger, fish-eaters like the otters, and bone-eaters such as the hyena," said Dr. Kargopoulos.</p>



<p>"A few other species like the panda and the marten fed opportunistically on plants and animals of various sizes."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-thriving-ecosystem">A thriving ecosystem </h2>



<p>The discovery of such varied predators in the Hammerschmiede is not just rare in fossils; it is also uncommon in any modern habitat. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that Hammerschmiede's ecosystem was extremely productive. Existing harmoniously, even while occupying similar niches, these different species indicate the richness of the environment.</p>



<p>As the research at Hammerschmiede continues, each excavation brings us a little closer to understanding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-life-and-environment-co-evolved-over-500-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mysteries of the past</a>. </p>



<p>The remarkable findings at this site have added captivating chapters to the tale of evolution, particularly regarding the panda and its diet, opening new avenues for scientists worldwide.</p>

<p>The MIND diet, designed specifically to boost brain health, might play a crucial role in preventing cognitive issues as we age by emphasizing nutrient-rich foods that support mental clarity and memory. </p>



<p>According to a recent study published in <em>Neurology</em>, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, individuals with diets closely aligned with the MIND diet may experience a lower risk of developing cognitive impairment over time.</p>



<p>This long-term study highlights the connection between consistent adherence to the diet and improved brain function, particularly in aging adults.</p>



<p>While the results do not definitively prove that the MIND diet can prevent cognitive decline, they do suggest a clear association between this nutritional approach and better brain health outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-merging-mediterranean-and-dash-diets">Merging Mediterranean and DASH diets</h2>



<p>Devised as a hybrid of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mediterranean-diet-keeps-the-brain-sharp-even-in-old-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mediterranean</a> and DASH diets, the MIND diet emphasizes the right foods for brain health. It includes green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and collard greens, along with whole grains, olive oil, poultry, fish, beans, and nuts.</p>



<p>Notably, the diet prioritizes berries over other fruits and prescribes at least one serving of fish per week.</p>



<p>“With the number of people with dementia increasing with the aging population, it’s critical to find changes that we can make to delay or slow down the development of cognitive problems,” said study author Dr. Russell P. Sawyer, a faculty member at the <a href="https://www.uc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cincinnati</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mind-diet-and-cognitive-health">MIND diet and cognitive health</h2>



<p>The study, which followed 14,145 people with an average age of 64 over a span of 10 years, assessed participants’ diets for their similarity to the MIND diet. </p>



<p>Participants were awarded points based on their intake of recommended foods and limited consumption of certain items like red meat, fried foods, and butter. </p>



<p>Diet scores were then divided into three groups, with the high-adhering group showing a 4% lower risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alarming-reality-one-in-four-americans-with-cognitive-impairment-lives-alone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive impairment</a> compared to the low-adhering group.</p>



<p>“These findings warrant further study, especially to examine these varying impacts among men and women and Black and white people," noted Dr. Sawyer. "But it’s exciting to consider that people could make some simple changes to their diet and potentially reduce or delay their risk of cognitive issues.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diet-scores-and-cognitive-impairment">Diet scores and cognitive impairment</h2>



<p>Thinking and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/digital-devices-can-actually-improve-our-memory-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory skills</a> were measured at the start and end of the study. Cognitive impairment developed in 12% of those in the low diet group, 11% in the middle group, and 10% in the high group.</p>



<p>The study revealed that cognitive decline was slower for participants who followed the MIND diet closely, with the effect stronger in Black participants compared to white participants.</p>



<p>Interestingly, female participants who followed the diet closely had a 6% reduced risk of cognitive impairment, while no significant decrease was observed in male participants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>While the findings are promising, the study was limited to older Black and Caucasian adults, and additional research is necessary to understand its broader implications for other populations.</p>



<p>Funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute on Aging, this research opens the door to future studies on how diet can be a simple yet impactful factor in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/walking-is-a-powerful-tool-to-boost-brain-health-and-overall-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain health</a>.</p>

<p>With growing evidence supporting the role of nutrition in brain health, the MIND diet may soon become a central component in preventive healthcare strategies aimed at reducing the global burden of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dementia-was-extremely-rare-in-ancient-times-so-why-is-it-now-so-prevalent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a> and cognitive decline.</p>

<p>New archaeological research has shed light on the long-debated ancestry of Australian dingoes, revealing insights that transform our understanding of this native species from Asia.</p>



<p>The remarkable findings establish a clear link between ancient dingo fossils and dogs from East Asia and New Guinea. </p>



<p>The research offers a fresh perspective that challenges previous assumptions and reshapes the narrative of dingo evolution and migration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-australian-dingoes">Origins of Australian dingoes</h2>



<p>The study was conducted by a team from the University of Sydney, University of New England, and University of Liverpool. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that dingoes arrived in Australia via Melanesia, contrasting earlier claims of their descent from South Asian pariah dogs.</p>



<p>For many years, traditional morphometric analysis (using calipers to measure the size and shape of bone) suggested that dingoes originated in South Asia. While this method provided valuable insights, it did not fully capture the evolutionary story of these fascinating animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-east-asian-ancestors">East Asian ancestors</h2>



<p>The latest study, published in <em>Nature Scientific Reports</em>, is changing the narrative. The researchers used cutting-edge 3D scanning technology and geometric morphometrics on ancient dingo fossils, leading to some remarkable discoveries that shed new light on their history.</p>



<p>The results reveal that dingoes do not resemble the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uncovering-the-truth-the-reality-behind-canine-dna-testing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">canines</a>&nbsp;of South Asia as much as they resemble Japanese dogs, the "singing dogs" of New Guinea, and the highland wild dogs of Irian Jaya.</p>



<p>Dr. Loukas Koungoulos is a research associate in the Discipline of Archaeology at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a>.</p>



<p>“The origins of this controversial Australian native animal have been heavily debated for more than a century," said Dr. Koungoulos.</p>



<p>"Our research has found the elusive first links between fossil material that suggest dingoes have evolved locally from an East Asian dog-like ancestor."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oldest-evidence-of-australian-dingoes">Oldest evidence of Australian dingoes </h2>



<p>The archaeological sites at Lake Mungo and Lake Milkengay, both in western New South Wales, hold some of the oldest evidence of dingoes in Australia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is incredible to see how these remarkable animals have evolved over thousands of years and gives us a greater understanding of this uniquely Australian species,” noted Dr. Koungoulos.</p>



<p>Professor Melanie Fillios from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.une.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of New England</a> and Dr. Ardern Hulme-Beaman from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Liverpool</a> were also key contributors to the study.&nbsp;Their analysis of ancient remains confirms the deep antiquity of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dingoes-and-modern-dogs-share-very-little-dna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dingo lineage</a>. </p>



<p>"Our research emphasizes the antiquity of dingoes, pointing to a common ancestor between dingoes and the more recent canines in Southeast Asia," said Professor Fillios.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-australian-dingoes">Evolution of Australian dingoes </h2>



<p>Working in close collaboration with the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area Traditional Owners, the experts used&nbsp;radiocarbon dating&nbsp;techniques to uncover the age of the dingo remains. </p>



<p>The analysis revealed that some of the remains are more than 3,000 years old.&nbsp;This discovery offers a fascinating look into the dingo's ancient roots. </p>



<p>What's even more interesting is that today's dingoes have changed a lot in their appearance over time. They have evolved to become larger and leaner, with an average height of 54 cm, compared to the 40-47 cm stature of their ancient ancestors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This growth brings the modern dingo much closer in size to their contemporary canine relatives in Southeast Asia and Melanesia, suggesting an adaptive evolution in response to environmental changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dingoes-and-their-ecological-role">Dingoes and their ecological role</h2>

New archaeological research has shed light on the long-debated ancestry...

<p>Enamel may hold the key to tracing the health narratives of not just present-day humans but also our ancestors. This once-unimaginable possibility is now within reach, thanks to an exciting new research method that analyzes proteins preserved in human tooth enamel.</p>



<p>Published in the <em>Journal of Archaeological Science</em>, the study focuses on two immune proteins: immunoglobulin G, an infection-fighting antibody, and C-reactive protein, which signals inflammation in the body.</p>



<p>Tammy Buonasera is an assistant professor at the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/uaf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alaska Fairbanks</a> and the study's lead author.</p>



<p>“These proteins are present in tooth enamel, and they are something we can use to study the biological and potentially the emotional health of past human populations,” said Buonasera.</p>



<p>“Analysis of immune proteins in enamel has not been done before, and this opens the door to studying disease and health in the past in a more targeted way than we can today."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tooth-enamel-health-study">Tooth enamel health study</h2>



<p>The innovative method was applied to tooth enamel from three groups: ancestral Ohlone people from the late 1700s and early 1800s in the San Francisco Bay Area, European settlers from the late 1800s, and modern-day military cadets.</p>



<p>The research team, including representatives from local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bison-slaughter-had-lasting-traumatic-impacts-on-indigenous-communities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indigenous tribes</a>, examined the immune proteins found in the enamel of these populations, comparing them against their historical contexts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elevated-levels-of-immune-proteins">Elevated levels of immune proteins </h2>



<p>The results revealed that the Indigenous population, exposed to high mortality rates, stress, and infectious diseases, had significantly elevated levels of the immune proteins.</p>



<p>Jelmer Eerkens is an anthropology professor at <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a> and a co-author of the study.</p>



<p>“We see certain individuals, especially children, with very high levels of immunoglobulins, which the body uses to battle disease, and C-reactive protein, which people produce when they are under <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-thrives-on-human-stress-as-it-spreads-throughout-the-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a>,” explained Eerkens.</p>



<p>“It’s heartbreaking to think about children who may have lost their parents and family to disease, were thrown into a new cultural environment they didn’t understand, and how it affected their well-being.”</p>



<p>The contrast between the Ohlone group and the European settlers or modern cadets reflected the varying health challenges faced by different populations across time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-records-in-tooth-enamel">Health records in tooth enamel </h2>



<p>Tooth enamel forms over different stages of human development, much like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-rings-reveal-the-carbon-storage-capacity-of-a-forest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree rings</a>, and provides a timeline of a person’s health from birth to early adulthood. </p>



<p>Since enamel forms during specific developmental periods - from in utero through late adolescence - researchers can pinpoint the health status during different phases of an individual's life.</p>



<p>This allows scientists to piece together a unique health record that spans several years. Additionally, immune proteins within tooth enamel offer more detailed information about a person’s health than structural changes observed in bones or teeth.</p>



<p>Many illnesses don’t leave a visible trace on the skeleton, but the proteins embedded in enamel may record responses to illness or inflammation that would otherwise go undetected. </p>



<p>Furthermore, tooth enamel degrades much more slowly than other tissues, allowing scientists to investigate the health of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-ancestors-coexisted-with-dinosaurs-yes-according-to-shocking-new-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient humans</a> over thousands of years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-modern-health">Implications for modern health</h2>



<p>Beyond gaining insight into ancient populations, the new method of analysis has the potential to provide critical discoveries about how stress, disease, and lifestyle impact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthal-genes-still-influence-modern-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern humans</a>.</p>



<p>“Without trying to overstate things too much, looking at stresses and immune responses in past populations could provide points of comparison with modern lifestyles that can be especially valuable because you have that depth of time,” said Buonasera.</p>



<p>By comparing modern health issues with patterns observed in ancient populations, researchers could gain a better understanding of how human bodies have adapted to changing environments and stressors over millennia.</p>



<p>In addition to being the first to examine serum proteins trapped in enamel, the study’s precision is noteworthy. </p>



<p>“We see the approach Tammy and her team have taken to be relevant in many contexts, for this and other questions,” said Glendon Parker, adjunct associate professor at UC Davis and one of the study’s co-authors. </p>



<p>“These new tools will give us further insight into the lives of past peoples. It is an exciting time for bio-anthropology as these tools become available.”</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0305440324001377" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Archaeological Science</a></em>.</p>

Tooth enamel holds a record of human health

<p>In an unprecedented development, astronomers have managed to capture detailed images of a star outside of our solar system, including gas bubbling on its surface.</p>



<p>These images, revealing giant hot gas bubbles larger than our sun, have been retrieved from the star R Doradus.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the gas bubbles seem to disappear into the interior of the star at a quicker rate than anticipated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bubbling-surface-of-r-doradus">Bubbling surface of R Doradus</h2>



<p>"This is the first time the bubbling surface of a real star can be shown in such a way," noted study lead author Wouter Vlemmings, a professor from <a href="https://www.chalmers.se/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chalmers University of Technology</a>, Sweden.</p>



<p>"We had never expected the data to be of such high quality that we could see so many details of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/R-Doradus-star_surface-image_alma_ESO_1b.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">convection on the stellar surface</a>."</p>

<p>How stars generate energy is a fascinating process. At their cores, stars undergo nuclear fusion. This prodigious energy then ascends toward the surface in the form of large, hot gas bubbles -- resembling movement within a lava lamp.</p>



<p>The bubbles eventually cool down and descend back into the core in a process known as convection.</p>



<p>The mixing motion of convection helps distribute heavy elements like carbon and nitrogen across the star. </p>



<p>It is also believed to generate <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/cosmic-cannibalism-and-stellar-winds-unveiling-the-secrets-of-messier-76/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stellar winds</a> that propel these elements into the cosmos, contributing to the birth of new stars and planets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-convection-outside-of-our-star-system">Convection outside of our star system</h2>



<p>In an exciting first, detailed tracking of convection movements has been achieved for stars other than our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/team-creates-video-showing-the-sun-in-gamma-rays-over-a-14-year-period/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/alma/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ALMA</a>), jointly owned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).</p>



<p>The target, R Doradus, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mays-full-moon-will-eclipse-a-giant-red-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">red giant star</a> with a diameter nearly 350 times that of our sun, is conveniently located about 180 light-years away in the constellation Dorado.</p>



<p>Given its massive size and relative proximity to Earth, R Doradus proved to be an ideal candidate for the detailed observations. Interestingly, the star has a mass that is similar to the sun. </p>



<p>The researchers noted that convection bubbles have been previously observed in detail on the surface of stars, including with the PIONIER instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer. </p>



<p>However, the new ALMA observations track the motion of the bubbles in a way that was not possible before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-close-observations-of-granular-structures">Close observations of granular structures</h2>



<p>"Convection creates the beautiful granular structure seen on the surface of our sun, but it is hard to see on other stars," explained study co-author Theo Khouri, a researcher at Chalmers.</p>



<p>"With ALMA, we have now been able to not only directly see convective granules - with a size 75 times the size of our sun! - but also measure how fast they move for the first time."</p>

<p>The granules of R Doradus seem to operate on a monthly cycle. This is a speedier pace than expected based on the sun's convection process.</p>



<p>"We don’t yet know what is the reason for the difference. It seems that convection changes as a star gets older in ways that we don't yet understand," explained Vlemmings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-r-doradus-and-sun-like-stars">Evolution of R Doradus and sun-like stars</h2>



<p>The recent observations are crucial as they deepen our understanding of sun-like stars when they mature into red giants as cool, large, and effervescent as R Doradus.</p>



<p>"It is spectacular that we can now directly image the details on the surface of stars so far away, and observe physics that until now was mostly only observable in our sun," said Behzad Bojnodi Arbab, a PhD student at Chalmers who also participated in the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-the-sun-s-future">Glimpse into the sun's future</h2>



<p>The red giant R Doradus offers a preview of what our sun may become in about five billion years. As stars like the sun age, they expand dramatically, becoming cooler and more luminous as red giants.</p>



<p>During this phase, convection becomes a dominant process on their surface, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-chimney-venting-found-heart-milky-way-galaxy-sagittarius-a/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hot gas</a> rises and cools, creating enormous granules of bubbling plasma. </p>



<p>This phase plays a crucial role in the distribution of elements across the star and into space, enriching the interstellar medium. </p>



<p>Understanding how red giants like R Doradus evolve not only helps astronomers study <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-sheds-light-on-earendel-the-most-distant-star-in-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">distant stars</a> but also sheds light on the eventual fate of our own solar system.</p>

<p>Every cloud has a silver lining, even on Mars. For any space enthusiast or sky observer fascinated by the Red Planet's atmospheric beauty, scientists have invented a comprehensive and browsable image database containing two decades worth of Martian sky-splendor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-cloud-atlas">Mars Cloud Atlas</h2>



<p>The research begins in Berlin, at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), where this database or the "Mars Cloud Atlas," as it is fondly called, was created.</p>



<p>The goal? To better comprehend the Martian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-lost-most-of-its-water-but-where-did-it-go/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric conditions</a>, the origins of specific features, and most importantly, to answer what these "tell-tale" signs reveal about not just Mars, but also the climates of other heavenly bodies in our solar system.</p>



<p>The Atlas, which was presented by Daniela Tirsch of DLR at the <a href="https://www.epsc2024.eu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europlanet Science Congress</a> in Berlin, is free for public access and features brilliant photos of clouds, storms and more, across the Martian skies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-express-continues-to-dazzle">Mars Express continues to dazzle</h2>



<p>The images in the Cloud Atlas are indeed a sight to behold, captured over 20 years by the High Resolution Stereo Camera <a href="https://www.esa.int/var/esa/storage/images/esa_multimedia/images/2004/01/the_high_resolution_stereo_camera_hrsc/10113150-2-eng-GB/The_High_Resolution_Stereo_Camera_HRSC_article.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(HRSC) instrument</a>.</p>



<p>For two decades, HRSC has been aboard the European Space Agency’s <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Mars_Express" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars Express</a> spacecraft, orbiting the red planet since 2005, recording atmospheric conditions.</p>

<p>Despite Mars having a considerably thin atmosphere, the HRSC has done a fascinating job of capturing numerous cloud formations and dust storm phenomena. </p>



<p>These formations are made up of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-water-found-on-mars-would-cover-the-planet-over-one-mile-deep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> and carbon dioxide ice crystals, alongside dust particles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-express-the-basics">Mars Express -- the basics</h2>



<p>The Mars Express spacecraft is packed with cool scientific instruments aimed at studying Mars from orbit, focusing on its atmosphere, surface, and what lies beneath.</p>



<p>Its main goal? To uncover clues about Mars' past environment, especially when it comes to water, to figure out if the planet ever had conditions that could support life.</p>



<p>Mars Express has sent back some amazing high-resolution images of the Martian surface, showing everything from massive canyons and ancient river valleys to icy polar caps and stunning cloud formations.</p>

<p>Over the years, Mars Express has made some really amazing discoveries. It picked up <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-is-letting-out-mysterious-methane-burps-but-why/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">methane in the Martian atmosphere</a>, sparking exciting questions about the potential for microbial life hiding beneath the surface.</p>



<p>The mission also found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-has-a-water-reservoir-two-miles-deep-enough-to-fill-earths-red-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of liquid water</a> under the south polar ice cap, a finding that could really change how we think about Mars' habitability.</p>



<p>Almost two decades later, Mars Express is still orbiting Mars, sending back valuable data that deepens our understanding of the planet and keeps the dream of future human exploration alive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mesmerizing-martian-spectacles">Mesmerizing Martian spectacles</h2>



<p>Clouds on Mars are just as diverse and fascinating as those we see in our skies on Earth, with some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-express-ice-spiders-surface-angustus-labyrinthus-inca-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">features unique to the Red Planet</a>. </p>



<p>"One of my favorite phenomena are the beautiful 'cloud streets' -- linear rows of fleecy clouds that develop around the huge volcanic Tharsis rise and the northern lowlands in northern spring and summer," noted Tirsch.</p>

<p>"While they resemble cumulus clouds on Earth, they are formed under different atmospheric conditions. We also see impressive dust clouds that can spread hundreds of kilometers -- a phenomena we luckily don’t experience on Earth.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-clouds-and-dust">Mars clouds and dust</h2>



<p>Dust plays a leading role in Mars's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-search-for-signs-of-life-on-mars-continues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a> and climate. Uncommon upwelling events can lead to the formation of beige, dust-filled blobs that linger in the atmosphere. </p>



<p>At specific seasons, large temperature and air pressure differences can trigger stronger-than-usual winds. </p>



<p>These powerful gusts lift enormous amounts of dust from the Martian surface, forming clouds that, from the vantage point of giant dormant volcanoes, mimic eruption clouds.</p>



<p>Cyclone systems and large spiral dust storms are annual phenomena near the Martian North pole. Studying these atmospheric marvels is vital for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-plan-terraform-mars-nanoparticles-would-make-it-habitable-for-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air mass circulation on Mars</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-cloud-types">Mars cloud types</h2>



<p>On both Mars and Earth, "gravity clouds" are common. They appear in mid-latitudes during the winter for both hemispheres. </p>



<p>Also, these clouds are frequently observed over the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-frost-detected-on-mars-enormous-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tharsis volcanic plateau</a> in the southern Martian winter.</p>

<p>A particular type of gravity cloud, the "Lee waves," form on the downwind side of ridges, mountains and other hurdles, resulting in repeating ridge formations.</p>



<p>While some clouds are location and season-specific, other types like 'twilight clouds' can magically appear in the early morning, at any time of year, any place.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-martian-weather">Understanding Martian weather</h2>



<p>The HRSC Cloud Atlas, thus, is an incredible tool offering valuable insights into the physical characteristics of Martian clouds and storms, their timing and locations. </p>



<p>This knowledge contributes to our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and climate cycles on Mars, further providing basis for climate studies on other planets, including Earth and Venus.</p>



<p>Daniela Tirsch confirms that the DLR team has already used the database to create global maps that indicate the occurrence of various cloud types, based on season and location.</p>



<p>She also shared that Mars Express will continue its mission till at least 2026, meaning the database will keep expanding, further refining our understanding of Mars's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-desert-moss-might-help-humans-live-on-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>. </p>



<p>Delightfully, papers on the database and its scientific applications are already underway.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
