<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>In this digital day and age, it's no surprise that students are progressively trading in pencils for pixels in the classroom. The driving force behind this shift is the belief that testing with computers instead of pencils will leave students more prepared for a tech-centric future.</p>



<p>But as computer-based testing becomes widespread, questions are emerging about the overarching impact this has on children.</p>



<p>In light of recent <a href="https://www.acara.edu.au/reporting/national-report-on-schooling-in-australia/naplan-national-results" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NAPLAN</a> results in Australia, for instance, these queries are becoming more pertinent, as the data seems to suggest that fundamental skills in English and Math are being neglected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dilemma-of-computer-based-testing">Dilemma of computer-based testing</h2>



<p>A team of researchers decided to dig deeper into this topic. <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1475939X.2024.2367517" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In a recent study</a>, they conducted an extensive review, assessing 43 studies from 18 countries including Australia, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Of these studies, 14 were centered around school-aged children.</p>



<p>Before we delve into these intriguing findings, let's briefly touch upon the concept of '<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pupils-enlarge-dilate-when-working-memory-engaged-focused-on-task/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">working memory</a>'. This term refers to our brain's temporary storage system -- it's where we hold on to information as we use it.</p>



<p>In the context of computer-based testing, this could be the student juggling the several tasks: understanding the question, formulating an answer, and navigating the digital platform.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memory-mechanics">Memory mechanics</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study's analysis demonstrated a pattern -- younger students with more rudimentary computer skills had higher scores when tested on paper. </p>



<p>As students aged, this effect lessened. Moreover, tasks demanding multiple steps caused a dip in scores in computer-based testing. One might wonder why?</p>



<p>Well, engaging with these complex tasks overloads the student's working memory, often resulting in a '<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-is-essential-for-memory-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high cognitive load</a>'.</p>



<p>Picture it as an overloaded computer -- when too many programs run simultaneously, the computer sluggishly struggles to perform. </p>



<p>This seems to imply that the test mode itself may add to the cognitive burden students carry during testing sessions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-computer-vs-paper-tests">Computer vs paper tests</h2>



<p>In a <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10648-023-09781-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2023 study</a>, researchers glimpsed this phenomenon in action. They compared the test scores of Year 9 students on both computer and paper-based tests. </p>



<p>These students were no strangers to the tech used in their science tests, but the findings were rather surprising.</p>



<p>For relatively simple questions, these students scored higher (by about 7%) on computer-based assessments. </p>



<p>But when confronted with complex questions, they scored better (by around 12%) on paper-based assessments. The intriguing question here is -- what could <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spacing-effect-spaced-learning-long-term-impact-on-memory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">possibly bridge this gap</a>?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-to-equilibrium">Key to equilibrium</h2>



<p>As part of a Year 9 student study, the researchers also assessed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">working memory capacity</a> of these students. This was accomplished by asking them to remember increasingly longer lists of numbers.</p>



<p>Upon controlling for this factor through statistical means, a remarkable finding came to light -- when all students were assumed to have the same working memory capacity, there was no difference in test scores between paper and computer.</p>



<p>This insight suggests that it's the students with lower working memory capacities who may be the most disadvantaged by computer-based tests. </p>



<p>This could particularly impact students diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toddler-screen-time-linked-to-atypical-sensory-behaviors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ADHD</a>), who often struggle with working memory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reimagining-the-digital-testing">Reimagining the digital testing</h2>



<p>So, what's the next step here? Do we abandon computers in the classroom? Certainly not. There is no denying the instrumental role technology plays in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-motivates-students-to-cheat-in-online-exams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern education</a>. </p>



<p>However, it's clear that taking a test on a computer is a different experience compared to paper-based testing.</p>



<p>Schools can consider a few adjustments to enhance the learning environment. Giving students extra time for complex tasks or tests on computers can make a significant difference in their performance. </p>



<p>Starting early with word processing skills training will help students develop strong typing and computer navigation abilities. Additionally, minimizing digital distractions, such as pop-ups, multiple tabs, and online games during tests and classwork, can create a more focused and productive atmosphere.</p>

<p>Moreover, parents can play a part too by encouraging children to use the computer for everyday tasks such as typing out emails, messages, and shopping lists. This could help their children to progressively conquer the keyboard and enhance their computer confidence.</p>



<p>In closing, the key takeaway is that while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computing-outperformed-new-type-traditional-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">computers</a> are, indeed, part of the future, we must continue to explore how they're incorporated into education without hindering student performance or widening the achievement gap. </p>

<p>For more than 25 years, astronomers have grappled with a fascinating question: what lies behind the consistent density of matter observed in galaxies, regardless of their varying ages, sizes, and structures? More often than not, the answers circle back to stars and the enigmatic concept of dark matter. </p>



<p>This intriguing puzzle has consistently challenged prevailing theories of galaxy formation while suggesting a “conspiracy” between the visible matter we observe -- like stars and gas -- and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enigmatic dark matter</a> that remains largely elusive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stars-dark-matter-and-galaxy-density">Stars, dark matter, and galaxy density</h2>



<p>Recent technological advancements and research, particularly the work of Dr. Caro Derkenne and her dedicated team, have provided more details about the intricate relationship between stars and dark matter.</p>



<p>Their findings are helping to decode the complexities of galactic density, ultimately reshaping our understanding of the universe.</p>



<p>Dr. Derkenne, an ASTRO 3D researcher from <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Macquarie University</a>, and her international team have published their findings in the <em>Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society</em>, overturning the previous theory that dark matter and stars were somehow interacting in ways we couldn’t understand.</p>



<p>Their research involved detailed observations of 22 middle-aged galaxies, looking back four billion years into the past using the Very Large Telescope (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/vlt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VLT</a>) in Chile.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-dark-matter">Understanding dark matter</h2>



<p>Dark matter is a theoretical substance that is believed by many to make up about 85% of the matter in the universe. It doesn't emit, absorb, or reflect light, which is why it's "dark."</p>



<p>Because we can't see dark matter directly, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/theory-gravity-exists-without-mass-so-dark-matter-does-not-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">its mere existence</a> is still up for debate in some scientific circles. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/existence-of-dark-matter-confirmed-by-new-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Most scientists assume it exists</a> because of its gravitational effects on visible matter, like stars and galaxies.</p>



<p>Without dark matter, they posit, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-holes-are-not-the-secret-source-of-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies would fly apart</a> because they don't have enough visible mass to hold them together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-so-called-conspiracy">The so-called 'conspiracy'</h2>



<p>The original theory emerged because galaxies appeared to have a uniform density structure, despite their differences.</p>



<p>This suggested that stars and dark matter must be interacting in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microscopic-primordial-black-holes-may-explain-all-dark-matter-in-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">some unknown way</a>. But no one could explain how this was happening. It was a mystery that stumped astronomers for decades.</p>



<p>"This homogeneity suggested that dark matter and stars must somehow compensate for each other in order to produce such regular mass structures," says Dr. Caro Derkenne</p>



<p>Dr. Derkenne and her colleagues, however, have discovered that this supposed “conspiracy” might not be happening at all. Instead, the problem lies in how astronomers have been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hubble-discovers-dark-matter-clump-center-draco-dwarf-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">measuring and modeling galaxies</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-the-stars-for-a-dark-matter-link">Searching the stars for a dark matter link</h2>



<p>The breakthrough came from the team's use of the VLT, equipped with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (<a href="https://www.eso.org/sci/facilities/develop/instruments/muse.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MUSE</a>). </p>



<p>This advanced tool allowed the team to analyze the galaxies in unprecedented detail, capturing the true diversity of galactic structures. </p>



<p>MUSE collects data cubes where each pixel represents a spectrum, giving a 3D view of the galaxy that was previously impossible to achieve.</p>



<p>These more complex models provided a clearer picture of the galaxies, showing that the previous uniformity observed in density was a result of oversimplified modeling rather than any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-may-consist-of-particles-that-travel-faster-than-light/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mysterious interaction</a> between stars and dark matter.</p>



<p>“In the past, people built simple models that had too many simplifications and assumptions,” says Dr. Derkenne. “Galaxies are complicated, and we have to model them with freedom or we’re going to measure the wrong things.”</p>



<p>"Our models ran on the OzStar supercomputer at <a href="https://www.swinburne.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swinburne University</a>, using the equivalent of about 8,000 hours of desktop computing time."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-tech-and-big-data">Big tech and big data</h2>



<p>This discovery has far-reaching implications for our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-galaxy-jwst-er1g-dark-matter-einstein-ring-mystery-solved/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies and the universe</a>. It challenges previous assumptions and opens the door to more accurate models of galactic formation and evolution.</p>



<p>Moreover, it highlights the importance of advanced tools and cutting-edge astronomical techniques.</p>



<p>“Astronomy sets you up really well to understand big data. The real world is messy, and we don’t always have all the data," explains Dr. Derkenne. </p>



<p>"No one is there to tell you the answers or if you’re wrong or right. You need to accumulate data and analyze until you find something that works.”</p>



<p>Dr. Derkenne’s work is part of the broader MAGPI (Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral field spectroscopy) survey, which aims to analyze the properties of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-influence-cosmos-galaxies-extends-much-farther-than-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies during their middle ages</a>. </p>



<p>The collaboration between Australian institutions and the European Southern Observatory has been crucial in making this research possible.</p>

<p>The findings from this study solve a long-standing problem in astronomy while demonstrating the potential for future research. <p>As Professor Emma Ryan-Weber, Director of ASTRO 3D, remarks, “The complex data from the ESO Very Large Telescope has not only solved a long-standing problem in astronomy, but also enabled young scientists, such as Dr. Caro Derkenne, a platform on which to launch their careers to solve real-world problems.”</p>



<p>This breakthrough in galactic research underscores the importance of continually challenging our assumptions and pushing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-seen-separating-from-normal-matter-after-galaxy-cluster-collision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">boundaries of scientific knowledge</a>. With the tools and expertise now available, the future of astronomy looks brighter than ever. </p>



<p>The mystery of galaxy density might be solved, but there are countless other questions waiting to be answered. And as this research shows, the key to unlocking those answers lies in the combination of advanced technology, innovative thinking, and international collaboration.</p>

<p>What is it about space that enthralls billionaire Jared Isaacman, the civilian astronaut who will be leading, funding, and spacewalking in the upcoming Polaris Dawn mission? In 2021, Isaacman, founder of payment services giant Shift4, funded a mission that orbited Earth.</p>



<p>Known as Inspiration4, it raised funds for childhood cancer while also headlining as a journey undertaken by four space neophytes. </p>



<p>After spending three days in a 13-foot-wide SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, the crew returned home, having accomplished a feat many thought was the pinnacle of Isaacman's space ambitions. </p>



<p>"We kind of checked every one of the boxes we set out to achieve," Isaacman mused after the journey. But space, with its magnetic allure, has been calling Isaacman back.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chapter-2-polaris-dawn">Chapter 2: Polaris Dawn</h2>



<p>August 26 will find Isaacman standing on the precipice of a new adventure at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, accompanied by three colleagues that were not part of his <a href="https://inspiration4.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inspiration4 mission</a>. </p>

<p>Former <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> astronaut and current <a href="https://www.spacex.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpaceX</a> consultant, Garrett Reisman explained to CNN that, “Jared (wants) to do things that SpaceX wasn’t necessarily doing on its own, to increase their capabilities, to get them to move the ball further downfield.” </p>

<p>As part of this mission, the Polaris Dawn crew will spend five days aboard a <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/dragon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule</a>, flying to heights untouched since NASA’s Apollo missions ended in the 1970s.</p>



<p>One of the distinguishing aspects of this mission is its daring trajectory. <p>This daring feat will depend on new Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits designed by SpaceX over two and a half years. Only Isaacman and Sarah Gillis will leave the spacecraft, strapped by umbilical cords. </p>

<p>Since there's no airlock to facilitate this transition, the Polaris Dawn crew will use an innovative method: gradually decreasing cabin pressure while augmenting oxygen concentration. This meticulous process will take roughly 45 hours -- nearly two full days.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-travel-weakens-astronauts-immune-system-similar-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Once out there</a>, they will embark on an elliptical orbit that will take them as far as 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) from Earth, journeying into the inner band of the Van Allen radiation belts. </p>



<p>To prepare for these risky conditions, SpaceX has subjected the Crew Dragon spacecraft to extensive testing, including exposure to radiation in an oncology lab to mimic the mission's conditions.</p>

<p>NASA’s Juno mission has guided the development of the first comprehensive 3D radiation map of the Jupiter system.</p>



<p>Jupiter's radiation environment is one of the most intense in the solar system. This powerful radiation is primarily due to Jupiter's strong magnetic field, which is about 20,000 times stronger than Earth's. </p>



<p>The radiation belts around Jupiter are filled with high-energy particles, such as electrons, protons, and ions, which are trapped by the planet's magnetic field.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-from-the-juno-spacecraft">Insights from the Juno spacecraft</h2>



<p>Scientists calculated the intensity of high-energy particles near Europa's orbit and examined how the radiation environment is shaped by the smaller moons near Jupiter’s rings. This technique has unveiled new insights into one of the solar system's most hostile environments.</p>



<p>The mission's success is driven by data collected from Juno’s Advanced Stellar Compass (ASC). This star tracker camera system was designed and built by the Technical University of Denmark.</p>



<p>The work also relied on data collected by the Stellar Reference Unit (SRU), a camera on the spacecraft that was built by Leonardo SpA in Florence, Italy.</p>



<p>"On Juno, we try to innovate new ways to use our sensors to learn about nature, and we have used many of our science instruments in ways they were not designed for," said Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator from the <a href="https://www.swri.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southwest Research Institute</a> in San Antonio. </p>



<p>"This is the first detailed radiation map of the region at these higher energies, which is a major step in understanding how Jupiter’s radiation environment works."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-counting-fireflies-to-measure-jupiter-radiation">"Counting fireflies" to measure Jupiter radiation</h2>



<p>Juno's ASC, consisting of four star cameras mounted on the spacecraft’s magnetometer boom, plays a crucial role in determining the spacecraft’s orientation in space. </p>



<p>Originally designed for navigation, these cameras have proven to be valuable detectors of high-energy particle fluxes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-jupiters-magnetosphere-will-help-us-predict-space-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter’s magnetosphere</a>. </p>



<p>"Every quarter-second, the ASC takes an image of the stars," said John Leif Jørgensen, a scientist from the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a>. </p>



<p>"Very energetic electrons that penetrate its shielding leave a telltale signature in our images that looks like the trail of a firefly. The instrument is programmed to count the number of these fireflies, giving us an accurate calculation of the amount of radiation."</p>



<p>The ASC data has revealed that very high-energy radiation near Europa's orbit is more abundant than previously thought, offering new insights into the radiation dynamics within Jupiter's magnetosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-jupiter-radiation-detection">Beyond Jupiter radiation detection</h2>



<p>Like the ASC, the Stellar Reference Unit has also been utilized as a radiation detector and a low-light imager, providing crucial data on how Jupiter's radiation environment interacts with its moons and rings.</p>



<p>The SRU has captured rare low-light images of Jupiter's rings from Juno's unique vantage point, shedding light on the mysterious formation of these rings. </p>



<p>"There is still a lot of mystery about how Jupiter’s rings were formed, and very few images have been collected by prior spacecraft," said Heidi Becker, co-lead investigator for the SRU and a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. </p>



<p>"These images allow us to learn more precisely where the ring moons are currently located and see the distribution of dust relative to their distance from Jupiter."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-radiation-challenges-of-jupiter-missions">Radiation challenges of Jupiter missions </h2>

<p>Air pollution is making summertime thunderstorms more intense and dangerous, according to a new study from James Madison University (JMU). The experts found that in an unstable atmosphere, pollution particles increase the number of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.</p>



<p>To investigate the relationship between air pollutants and thunderstorms, the researchers examined half a million storms in two geographically distinct regions: Washington D.C. and Kansas City, Missouri. They focused on the aerosol and thermodynamic environments surrounding <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/thunderstorm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thunderstorm</a> initiation.</p>



<p>“Regional weather patterns vary in their propensity for producing thunderstorms and lightning. However, these weather patterns can also be associated with different transport directions and concentrations of air pollution,” noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-hundreds-of-thousands-of-storms-nbsp">Studying hundreds of thousands of storms<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Overall, the <a href="https://www.jmu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JMU</a> team analyzed nearly 200,000 thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C. area and over 300,000 in the Kansas City area. They combined 12 years of cloud-to-ground lightning data from the National Lightning Detection Network with air pollution data from hundreds of monitoring stations in both cities.</p>



<p>The study revealed a clear correlation: in environments with high atmospheric instability, increased pollution leads to a rise in cloud-to-ground <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dry-lightning-can-ignite-wildfires-in-wetter-conditions-than-expected/">lightning</a> strikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollution-and-lightning-production-nbsp">Air pollution and lightning production<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>"Pollution acts as cloud nuclei,” explained study lead author Professor Mace Bentley. “It gets brought into the cloud through the updraft; the updraft and downdraft then separate the <a href="https://phys.org/tags/pollution+particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution particles</a>, which divides the electrical charges in the cloud and leads to more lightning production."</p>



<p>The experts noted that even though warm season thunderstorm environments are considerably different between the Washington D.C. and Kansas City regions, it appears that thunderstorm intensity (as measured by flash counts) is regulated by similar thermodynamic-aerosol relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thunderstorms-impact-on-air-pollution">Thunderstorms’ impact on air pollution</h2>



<p>Looking at the flip side of the coin, thunderstorms also have impacts on air quality. The nature of these effects are complicated because thunderstorms influence <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a> in both positive and negative ways. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-positive-air-quality-effects">Positive air quality effects</h3>



<p>Heavy rainfall can act as a natural cleanser for the atmosphere. Rain helps to “wash away” pollutants like dust, pollen, and particulate matter from the atmosphere. This cleansing effect can lead to a temporary improvement in air quality.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Furthermore, the strong winds and turbulence generated by thunderstorms help mix the air, dispersing localized pollutants and reducing their concentrations near the surface.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-negative-effects-on-air-pollution-nbsp">Negative effects on air pollution<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h3>



<p>However, thunderstorms can also have negative impacts on air quality. For example, thunderstorms contribute to air pollution by lifting surface pollutants into the upper atmosphere, where they can be transported over long distances, potentially impacting air quality far from their source.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In some cases, lightning from thunderstorms can ignite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twenty-years-of-air-quality-improvement-erased-by-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a>, which release large amounts of smoke and particulate matter, significantly degrading air quality across vast areas.</p>



<p>Furthermore, lightning produces ozone in the lower atmosphere. While ozone is beneficial in the upper atmosphere, it becomes a harmful pollutant and a key component of smog at the ground level.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-impacts-of-smog">Health impacts of smog</h3>



<p>Smog significantly impacts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollution-is-a-greater-health-threat-than-we-ever-imagined/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human health</a> in several ways. It primarily affects the respiratory system, causing irritation in the airways, leading to symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, and shortness of breath.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or bronchitis, smog can exacerbate these issues, making breathing more difficult and potentially triggering severe attacks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, the fine particulate matter present in smog can enter the bloodstream, contributing to cardiovascular problems. This can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other heart-related conditions.</p>

<p>The relationship between air pollution and thunderstorms is also influenced by broader environmental factors. <p>Ultimately, while thunderstorms can help reduce air pollution, which in turn might reduce the frequency or intensity of subsequent storms, the exact nature of the feedback loop depends on specific atmospheric conditions and the types of pollutants involved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research-efforts">Ongoing research efforts</h2>



<p>As for the JMU study, Professor Bentley is currently expanding his research to Bangkok, a megacity with even higher pollution levels than Washington, D.C., and Kansas City, and situated in a hot, tropical climate. His preliminary findings suggest a similar pattern, with even higher rates of lightning in these storms.</p>



<p>"It looks like no matter where you go in the world, urban pollution is capable of enhancing thunderstorms and lightning," said Professor Bentley.</p>



<p>The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0169809524001844?dgcid=rss_sd_all" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Atmospheric Research</em></a>.</p>

<p>Recently, the Hubble Space Telescope turned its gaze to the heart of a spiral galaxy named Messier 33 (M33), tucked away in the constellation of Triangulum. </p>



<p>This web of stars and nebulosity, about half the size of our own Milky Way, is the third largest galaxy in our Local Group.</p>



<p>Borne from the remarkable scientific endeavors of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> and JP Dalcanton from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, these insights help us grasp the magnetic allure of this celestial powerhouse.</p>



<p>The spectacle unveils a remarkable characteristic about M33 -- it's a hotbed nursery for stars. The galaxy's star-forming activity outpaces the Andromeda galaxy, its neighbor, by ten-fold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-messier-33-m33-galaxy">Inside the Messier 33 (M33) galaxy</h2>



<p>The core of M33 is dominated by vibrant hues of pink and red glowing from regions of nebulosity. Amidst this colorful chaos, M33 shelters abundant dust and gas, the raw ingredients for star formation. </p>



<p>Add to this the presence of ionized hydrogen clouds or H-II regions, and we're looking at a stellar breeding ground.</p>



<p>But unlike many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-galaxy-formation-occurred-much-faster-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> whose star formations are often triggered by galactic collisions, M33's firework display of starbirth plays out on a different stage. </p>



<p>The galaxy's neat, ordered spiral arms imply minimal interaction with other galaxies, leading experts to believe that the star formation is the result of molecular cloud collisions within M33 itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-glow-of-countless-stars">The glow of countless stars</h2>



<p>Take a closer gaze at the image, and you'll see the star-studded graininess come to life. It isn't mere noise; rather, it's the glow of countless stars visible due to the proximity of M33. </p>



<p>This galaxy is one of fewer than a hundred close enough for the <a href="https://hubblesite.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble Space Telescope</a> to analyze its individual stars, revealing their beauty and intricate details. </p>



<p>The view not only showcases the stars but also emphasizes the vastness and wonder of our universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-signs-of-a-black-hole">No signs of a black hole </h2>



<p>It may seem unusual to observe that M33, also known as the Triangulum Galaxy, lacks a central bulge and shows no signs of a supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/awakening-of-a-black-hole-witnessed-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> at its core. </p>



<p>This characteristic appears peculiar for a spiral galaxy, as most galaxies of this type typically host densely packed stars and supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-hole-found-in-mysterious-milky-way-star-cluster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a>, making their absence noteworthy. </p>

<p>In 1977, something peculiar happened. A radio telescope at the Ohio State University -- the Big Ear, captured a peculiar signal from outer space. This signal was so astonishing that it made astronomer Jerry Ehman utter a profound "WOW!" Now, decades later, the mystery surrounding the signal might finally be unraveling.</p>



<p>This revelation comes from the diligent research undertaken by scientists from the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. </p>



<p>Their findings are not pointing towards extraterrestrial activity. At least, not yet. According to their analysis, this signal captured at <a href="http://www.bigear.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Ear radio observatory</a> was likely caused by a natural microwave laser slamming into Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unearthly-origins-or-not">Unearthly origins or not?</h2>



<p>For years, there had been countless theories attempting to explain the origin of the "WOW!" signal. </p>



<p>Some exclaimed it as a "hello" from an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraterrestrial-life-moons-planets-detected-single-grain-ice-floating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alien civilization</a>, while others suggested it was an unusual frequency produced by an abundance of atomic hydrogen in the universe.</p>



<p>The central puzzle was the unique nature of the signal - not only powerful but also registered in a narrow band of frequencies around 1420 MHz. </p>



<p>And despite theories ranging from alien broadcasts to cosmic collisions, the inability to pick up the signal again left astronomers scratching their heads.</p>



<p>But the tenacity of <a href="https://phl.upr.edu/about/abel_mendez" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Abel Méndez</a> and his team has finally shed light on this enduring cosmic mystery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-wow-signal">Decoding the WOW! signal</h2>



<p>Their study was initiated using the now-defunct Arecibo Observatory's Radio Emissions from Red Dwarf Stars (REDS) project. </p>



<p>The goal was straightforward -- to comb through the archives and see if anything similar to the "WOW! signal" had ever been spotted.</p>



<p>Their search led to the discovery of a few signals strikingly similar yet fainter than the original signal. Surprisingly, these signals all originated from a red dwarf star named Teegarden's Star, just 12.5 light-years from Earth.</p>



<p> "Our latest observations, made between February and May 2020, have revealed similar narrowband signals near the hydrogen line, though less intense than the original Wow! signal," notes Professor Méndez.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-microwave-laser">Natural microwave laser</h2>



<p>What sets Teegarden's Star apart is an intriguing environment around it - clouds of cool atomic hydrogen. </p>



<p>When the intense light from the red dwarf hits these clouds, they stimulate a powerful burst of microwave energy in the 1420 MHz band. This phenomenon results in a natural microwave laser or, in scientific terms, a maser.</p>



<p>The scientists believe that the "WOW! signal" was likely a similar, albeit more potent, maser burst. But what could have caused such enormous energy? </p>



<p>The researchers think it was a neutron star, or to be precise, a specific type of neutron star called a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fastest-spinning-magnetar-reveals-secrets-of-neutron-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetar</a>.</p>



<p>Magnetars are remnants of collapsed stars that have exploded into supernovae. What remains is a dense, super-rotating, magnetic core. </p>



<p>When a burst from a magnetar collides with a hydrogen gas cloud, it can trigger a colossal maser burst, just like the "WOW! signal".</p>



<p>Although this alignment is rare, it offers a plausible explanation why the signal hasn't been heard since.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revisiting-the-wow-signal">Revisiting the WOW! signal</h2>



<p>So, can we finally put the alien life speculation to rest? According to this research, it seems so. The scientists have concluded that the "WOW! signal" is more likely a product of complex cosmic phenomena than evidence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-hellish-planet-venus-can-help-us-find-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life beyond Earth</a>.</p>



<p>Perhaps this will temper some of our high expectations that any ambiguous signal received from space is a call from our extraterrestrial neighbors. </p>



<p>However, as the enduring fascination with the "WOW! signal" proves, we will continue to look towards the stars and wonder who else might be out there.</p>



<p>The next time you look up at the night sky, remember that some of mystery's allure lies in its solution. And the story of the "WOW! signal" shows that sometimes the answers are as astounding as the questions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



<p>The team at Arecibo plans to continue their research, exploring extensive sets of observations from the REDS project.</p>



<p>As for the rest of us, let's continue to marvel at the mysteries that cosmic space sends our way. Because, every "WOW!" we utter leads us on an unpredictable journey, deeper into understanding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-energy-flash-brighter-than-a-galaxy-traveled-8-billion-light-years-to-reach-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vast universe</a> around us.</p>

<p>When you envision the picturesque landscapes of Rhön, a broad expanse of rolling hills and forests in central Germany, springs might not be the first thing to come to mind in the context of global conservation.</p>



<p>However, for Stefan Zaenker, a conservation officer for the state of Hesse, these water sources are of utmost importance.</p>



<p>Leading a team of volunteers, Zaenker runs through a checklist before heading into the forest: “Are rubber boots disinfected to prevent introducing potentially harmful microorganisms into the wetland? Are the team app and GPS functioning correctly? Have enough flags been packed?” </p>



<p>The mission is to locate and map the area's hidden springs, and document the lifeforms they harbor. Far too little is known about where springs occur and what species they harbor, noted Zaenker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-role-of-springs-in-ecosystems">Critical role of springs in ecosystems</h2>



<p>Zaenker, along with volunteers from the Hesse Association for Cave and Karst Research, spends much of his spare time on this critical task, focusing on Rhön and a nearby national park. </p>



<p>He believes that springs play a crucial role in human life and biodiversity, connecting groundwater to the sunlit world. </p>



<p>"Without a continual connection to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-has-a-vital-role-in-ecosystem-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater</a>, which also feeds rivers, many landscapes would quickly dry up and become hotter," said Zaenker.</p>



<p>Springs also serve as habitats for highly specialized species, some of which alternate between the outdoor nightlife and the dark realm of groundwater during the day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-springs-and-global-conservation-strategies">Springs and global conservation strategies</h2>



<p>Despite their importance, springs rarely receive the attention they deserve in global conservation strategies, overshadowed by more prominent ecosystems like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-happens-when-rivers-jump-their-banks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a>, bogs, and coral reefs. </p>



<p>In the United States, for instance, springs do "not appear to be a prominent feature on the conservation radar," according to Kirsten Work, a zoologist from <a href="https://www.stetson.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stetson University</a> in Florida. </p>



<p>Yet, these small, seemingly inconspicuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-source-water-exceeds-safe-drinking-limits-of-pfas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water sources</a> support more than 10 percent of U.S. endangered species, including the Comal Springs riffle beetle and the endangered White River springfish, highlighting their critical ecological role.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-hidden-springs-of-germany">Mapping the hidden springs of Germany</h2>



<p>In Germany, a country known for its efficient bureaucracy, the assumption that all natural features are thoroughly documented is widespread. </p>



<p>However, Zaenker challenges this belief. “I can stand right next to an impressive spring with water flowing out, but the official topographical map shows nothing,” said Zaenker.</p>



<p>These undocumented springs, legally protected habitats denoted by blue dots on maps, pose a significant question for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a>: "How can we effectively protect these important habitats if we don’t even know they exist?"</p>



<p>During one of their missions, Zaenker's team discovered eight new helocrene springs, where water seeps diffusely into a marsh or bog. </p>



<p>To an untrained eye, these might look like mere puddles, but Zaenker identifies them as critical habitats. His team meticulously logs the positions of these springs, measures pH levels and electrical conductivity, and collects samples to assess <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-at-risk-climate-change-is-diminishing-global-water-quality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water quality</a> and identify plant and animal species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-perspectives-on-spring-conservation">Global perspectives on spring conservation</h2>



<p>Ecologist Larry Stevens, co-founder of the Springs Stewardship Institute and author of <em>Springs of the World: Distribution, Ecology, and Conservation</em>, echoes Zaenker's concerns.</p>



<p>Stevens describes springs as “canaries in coal mines” due to their role in signaling water table declines and biodiversity loss. </p>



<p>“Springs are often isolated from one another geographically, and many have been in place for millennia, making them hotspots for new species to arise and refuges for species that have lost their habitats elsewhere,” said Stevens.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-springs-face-threats-worldwide">Springs face threats worldwide</h2>



<p>Despite their significance, springs often go unnoticed as people no longer rely on them for water, turning instead to municipal supplies. This has led to springs being piped, tapped, built over, and polluted.</p>



<p>A concerning trend highlighted by Stevens and other researchers is the rapid decline in groundwater levels globally. </p>



<p>A study conducted by the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>, using data from 170,000 monitoring wells, reveals that groundwater levels are declining by up to 50 centimeters per year in some regions. </p>



<p>In Germany, despite periods of intense rainfall, a water deficit from years of drought persists, underscoring the need for proactive conservation measures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hope-for-future-conservation">Hope for future conservation</h2>



<p>Zaenker's extensive survey in the Rhön region stands out for its detail and impact. Over two decades, he has mapped exactly 8,000 springs, about ten times the number officially listed.</p>



<p>The data has been integrated into the geographical information system used by forest authorities, ensuring that these vital habitats are protected during logging operations.</p>



<p>Although official mapmakers have yet to recognize these efforts, Zaenker remains optimistic.</p>



<p> “When they are ready to represent all springs as protected habitats with blue dots, our vast database will be ready to guide the process,” he says, emphasizing the importance of ongoing efforts to safeguard these overlooked but invaluable ecosystems.</p>

<p>Cluster, a trailblazing mission by the European Space Agency (ESA), is nearing its end with a historic "targeted re-entry" into Earth's atmosphere.</p>



<p>For over 24 years, the four satellites of Cluster have provided valuable insights into Earth's magnetic environment and its interactions with solar wind.</p>



<p>As the mission concludes, it marks not only the end of a significant era in space exploration but also the beginning of new standards in sustainable space practices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observations-of-earth-s-magnetic-shield">Observations of Earth's magnetic shield</h2>



<p>Launched in 2000, the Cluster mission comprised four satellites that tirelessly observed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-solar-shockwave-has-cracked-earths-magnetosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetosphere</a>, the powerful magnetic shield that protects our planet from solar wind. </p>



<p>In the years since their launch in 2000, these satellites - Rumba, Salsa, Samba, and Tango - have studied how solar wind particles interact with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-is-shifting-and-putting-navigation-at-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic environment</a>, a phenomenon known as space weather.</p>



<p>"For over two decades, Cluster has shown us time and time again how important the magnetosphere is in shielding us from the solar wind," said Philippe Escoubet, Cluster Mission Manager. "It has watched the effects of solar storms to help us better understand and forecast space weather."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-return-of-salsa">The return of Salsa</h2>



<p>Even a mission as important as Cluster must eventually conclude. ESA has taken the initiative to use the mission's termination to demonstrate responsibility in mitigating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-space-exploration-could-be-shut-down-by-orbiting-debris/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space debris</a>, an issue that has gained international attention.</p>



<p>On September 8, 2024, Salsa, the first of the four satellites, will re-enter Earth's atmosphere over the remote South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area. The targeted region is as far from populated regions as possible.</p>



<p>Bruno Sousa, Cluster Operations Manager, emphasized ESA's commitment to space safety. He noted that back in January, Salsa’s orbit was tweaked to make sure that it experiences its final steep drop on September 8th from an altitude of roughly 110 kilometers to 80 kilometers.</p>



<p>"This gives us the greatest possible control over where the spacecraft will be captured by the atmosphere and begin to burn up," said Sousa.</p>



<p>Despite the predictability of this re-entry, ESA acknowledges that there is still much to learn about how spacecraft behave in the lower atmosphere. To gather valuable data, ESA is considering observing Salsa's re-entry from an aircraft, which would offer insights to enhance the safety of future returns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cluster-s-legacy-sustainable-space-practices">Cluster's legacy: Sustainable space practices</h2>



<p>Cluster's targeted re-entry is not just about concluding a mission; it sets a standard for sustainable space practices.</p>



<p>Tim Flohrer, head of ESA’s Space Debris Office, noted: "By studying how Salsa burns up, which parts might survive, for how long and in what state, we will learn much about how to build ‘zero-debris’ <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burning-up-of-satellites-severely-harms-ozone-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellites</a>."</p>



<p>The knowledge gained will help ESA develop safer, more predictable re-entry strategies for future missions, such as Smile and Proba-3.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conclusion-of-the-cluster-mission">Conclusion of the Cluster mission</h2>



<p>Following Salsa's re-entry, the remaining satellites - Rumba, Samba, and Tango - will enter "caretaker" mode to avoid collisions. They are scheduled for similar controlled re-entries, with the last goodbye set for August 2026.</p>



<p>This farewell, however, is more of a passing of the baton to the next generation of ESA missions, ensuring that the pioneering work of Cluster continues to inform and inspire.</p>



<p>Smile, a collaboration with the <a href="https://english.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, is slated to launch in late 2025 and will continue to explore the complex magnetic environment surrounding Earth, building upon the pioneering work of Cluster.</p>

<p>No matter where the participants hailed from, their notions of wisdom revolved around two key dimensions: reflective orientation and socio-emotional awareness.</p>



<p>Reflective orientation is all about logical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/transcendent-thinking-promotes-brain-growth-in-adolescents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thinking</a>, controlling one's emotions and applying knowledge effectively. On the other hand, socio-emotional awareness includes paying attention to the social context and caring for others' feelings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-consensus">A global consensus</h2>



<p>“To our surprise, the two dimensions emerged across all cultural regions we studied, and both were associated with explicit attribution of wisdom,”&nbsp;said Dr. Maksim Rudnev, a postdoctoral research associate in psychology at <a href="https://uwaterloo.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waterloo</a> and lead author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The implications of the research extend beyond academia. The findings provide profound insights into how people worldwide judge, trust, and support influential figures, be it leaders or educators.</p>

<p>“While both dimensions of wisdom work together, people associate wisdom more with the reflective orientation. If someone is viewed as not able to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/intelligent-minds-take-longer-to-solve-difficult-problems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reflect and think</a> logically, then perceptions of them as socio-emotionally competent and moral won’t compensate,” said Dr. Grossman.</p>



<p>“You could see it in the immediate aftermath of the infamous Trump-Biden 2024 presidential debate: both candidates did not appear reflective, yet Trump seemed to have won the debate with many viewers perceiving Biden as socio-emotionally well-meaning but cognitively frail.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaborative-research-effort">Collaborative research effort</h2>



<p>The study was a collaborative effort involving 26 research institutions, coordinated by the Geography of Philosophy consortium with researchers representing the North and South Americas, Asia, Africa, and Europe.</p>



<p>A total of 2,707 enthusiastic participants from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds compared and rated the wisdom of 10 individuals and themselves. </p>



<p>How was this measured? They were presented with a real-life scenario involving a difficult choice with no clear right or wrong, and then asked to reflect and rate.</p>



<p>“Interestingly, our participants considered themselves inferior to most exemplars of wisdom in regard to reflective orientation but were less self-conscious when it comes to socio-emotional characteristics,” said Dr. Rudnev.</p>



<p>“Understanding perceptions of wisdom around the world has&nbsp;implications for leadership, education and cross-cultural communication.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the conversation around these policies often becomes entangled in debates over which approaches genuinely reduce emissions and which fall short of making real progress.</p>



<p>Moreover, many discussions focus primarily on mainstream policies, overlooking numerous lesser-known but potentially impactful measures. </p>



<p>A recent study aims to broaden this perspective by providing a comprehensive analysis of various climate policy instruments implemented over the past two decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-collaborative-endeavor">A collaborative endeavor</h2>



<p>This monumental study is a result of the joint efforts of several notable institutions. Among them, the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> (PIK) and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) have taken the lead.</p>



<p>Also contributing their knowledge and expertise were experts from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>, the University of Victoria, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).</p>



<p>Aiding this endeavor is an innovative digital resource, the "Climate Policy Explorer." This tool provides an in-depth overview of the results and methodology involved and is accessible to the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-insights-new-perspectives">New insights, new perspectives</h2>



<p>"We systematically evaluated policy measures that have rarely been studied until now, providing new insights into well-designed combinations of complementary policy instruments," noted study co-author Nicholas Koch.</p>



<p>"Our findings demonstrate that more policies do not necessarily equate to better outcomes. Instead, the right mix of measures is crucial. For example, subsidies or regulations alone are insufficient; only in combination with price-based instruments, such as carbon and energy taxes, can they deliver substantial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-pricing-is-effective-in-reducing-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emission reductions</a>."</p>



<p>To illustrate this point, the study brings up specific examples such as bans on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coal-fired-power-generation-weakened-by-the-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coal-fired</a> power plants and combustion engine cars. </p>



<p>The research shows that these measures do not result in significant emissions reductions when implemented alone. Successful implementations are observed only when coupled with tax or price incentives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-policy-interventions">Climate policy interventions</h2>



<p>The team examined 1,500 policy interventions implemented from 1998 to 2022. <p>“While it remains challenging to precisely disentangle the effects of individual measures within a policy mix, our 63 success cases provide systematic insights into effective policy combinations, and show how well-designed policy mixes depend on sectors and the development level of countries," said lead author Annika Stechemesser.</p>



<p>"This knowledge is vital for supporting policymakers and society in the transition to climate neutrality.”</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
