<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>According to new research, the captivating features of primates do more than just attract mates or establish social hierarchies. They hold a crucial role in communication between different social groups.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-signals-for-primate-communication">Critical signals for primate communication</h2>



<p>Researchers from the University of Zurich (<a href="https://www.uzh.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UZH</a>) and the University of Western Australia have uncovered an intriguing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-primates-must-prioritize-survival-over-long-term-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">connection</a> between the spectacular features of primates and their social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-unlock-the-mysteries-of-orangutan-communication/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interactions</a>.</p>



<p>Stefan Lüpold from the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies at UZH and Cyril Grueter from the University of Western Australia conducted a study revealing that primate ornamentation aids in intergroup communication. </p>



<p>The visually striking traits of many primate species - like the golden snub-nosed monkey’s blue face and lip wart - serve as critical signals for communicating with other groups.</p>

<p>The research involved the analysis of data from 144 primate species, both monkeys, and apes. The focus was on how ornamentation relates to the overlap of home ranges - simply put, how much living space groups share with their neighbors. Lüpold and Grueter’s findings unearthed a fascinating pattern.</p>



<p>Species that shared more space with their neighbors showcased greater differences in ornamentation between the sexes. In other words, in species where groups interact more frequently, males are more likely to sport flashy traits that set them apart.</p>

<p>Another interesting finding was that intergroup encounters were less likely to be aggressive in species with greater home range overlap. </p>

Visually striking primate features ease tension and reduce conflict

<p>Let's give pause to our bustling lives and explore a fascinating new field of study: mindfulness. In a world dominated by constant hustle and bustle, this may sound like an unachievable feat. But researchers at the University of Bath and Southampton beg to differ.</p>



<p>Their study elicits how a mere ten minutes of daily mindfulness could usher in substantial benefits. This includes enhancing wellbeing, mitigating depression, curbing anxiety, and triggering a fervor to adopt healthier lifestyle choices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unlocking-serenity-with-mindfulness">Unlocking serenity with mindfulness </h2>



<p>The researchers enlisted 1,247 adults from a whopping 91 countries and embarked on a unique experiment.</p>



<p>The participants, mostly novices in the realm of mindfulness, were randomly divided into two groups. One group engaged in a month-long mindfulness <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-protects-against-work-stress-burnout/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">routine</a>, while the other participated in a control condition - listening to excerpts from "Alice in Wonderland."</p>



<p>Here's what the mindfulness routine entailed: relaxation exercises, setting intentions, body scans, focusing attention on breath, and introspection. These were all delivered through a free mobile app named "Medito."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mindfulness-and-mental-health-changes">Mindfulness and mental health changes </h2>



<p>The transformation was strikingly apparent. Participants reported significant changes in their mental health before and after the 30-day mindfulness regimen. The numbers were impressive.</p>



<p>The mindfulness group reported a 19.2% reduction in depression compared to the control group, a 6.9% boost in wellbeing, a 12.6% decrease in anxiety levels, and a more positive attitude toward health by 7.1%, when compared to the control group. These individuals also expressed an increased willingness to take care of their health by 6.5% more than the control group.</p>



<p>The effects weren't ephemeral. The benefits of mindfulness endured, with survey follow-ups conducted after a month (Day 61) showing that the mindfulness group <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-can-lead-to-altered-states-of-consciousness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maintained their wellbeing</a>, depression, attitudes, and even reported better sleep quality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-praising-the-power-of-mindfulness">Praising the power of mindfulness</h2>

<p>"It is even more encouraging that these benefits were sustained after the mindfulness course ended, suggesting this practice can help build sustainable habits,” said Dr. Western.</p>

<p>How do rabbits transform from fluffy pets to destructive invaders? Rabbits have spread across various countries, often causing severe economic and ecological damage, yet the secret behind their success has remained unclear - until now.&nbsp;</p>



<p>An international research team has sequenced the genomes of nearly 300 rabbits from three continents to uncover the genetic changes that make these animals exceptional colonizers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-domesticated-animals-and-their-wild-ancestors-nbsp">Domesticated animals and their wild ancestors<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Throughout history, humans have <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-foxes-can-be-domesticated-thanks-to-breeding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">domesticated</a> a wide range of animals. “Some changed so much from their wild ancestors, it is difficult to imagine they are related, like chihuahuas that descend from wolves,” said lead author Pedro Andrade, a researcher at <a href="https://www.cibio.up.pt/en/internationalization/biopolis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BIOPOLIS-CIBIO</a>.</p>



<p>“Changes are often so drastic, that if you put your pet back in the wilderness, it will be very challenging for it to survive.”</p>



<p>However, some domesticated animals do manage to adapt to the wild again, becoming what are known as ferals. Rabbits are a prime example.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They have been introduced to various parts of the world multiple times, and despite extensive research, scientists have long been puzzled by a key question: how do domestic rabbits, bred for life in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pet-rabbits-need-space-and-freedom-to-play-and-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">captivity</a> over thousands of years, not only survive but thrive when released into the wild?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rabbits-released-into-wilderness">Rabbits released into wilderness</h2>



<p>“In a previous study by our team on the colonization of Australia by rabbits, we found that multiple releases of domestic rabbits had occurred over several decades, yet it was a single introduction of 24 wild ancestry rabbits in 1859 by Englishman Thomas Austin that triggered the massive population growth leading to one of the largest environmental disasters in history,” said Joel Alves, a scientist at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO and the University of Oxford.</p>



<p>Could this be the clue to understanding why rabbits so often establish feral populations? To investigate, the research team sequenced the genomes of nearly 300 rabbits, including six feral populations from Europe, South America, and Oceania, as well as domestic and wild rabbits from Southwest Europe, their native range. </p>



<p>This massive dataset - the largest genetic collection of rabbits ever assembled - enabled the researchers to determine what makes these rabbits so successful in the wild.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mixed-origin-of-rabbits">Mixed origin of rabbits</h2>



<p>“Domestic rabbits are so common that we initially expected these feral populations to be composed of domestic rabbits that somehow managed to re-adapt to the wild, but our findings point to a more complex scenario,” explained Miguel Carneiro, one of the senior authors of the study.</p>



<p>Carneiro noted that despite looking at six largely independent colonizations, all these feral rabbits share a mixed domestic and wild origin.</p>



<p>The research revealed that during the transition back to the wild, genetic traits linked to domestication are often eliminated because they are detrimental in the wild, making animals more susceptible to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coyotes-move-into-towns-to-avoid-predators-only-to-be-killed-by-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predators</a>. This effect is more pronounced depending on how extreme the trait became during domestication. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-selection-in-action-nbsp">Natural selection in action<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Leif Andersson is a professor at <a href="https://www.uu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uppsala University</a> and another senior author of the study. </p>



<p>“In these feral populations, you will typically not see an albino or a fully black rabbit, even if these fancy coat colors are very common in domestic rabbits,” said Andersson.</p>



<p>“However, you may very well encounter rabbits that carry the mutation for diluted coat color, a domestic variant that has minimal effect on camouflage. This is a concrete example of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-rules-natural-selection-change-significantly-often-daphnia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural selection</a> in action.”</p>



<p>The natural selection process didn’t just target visible traits like coat color. The team also found strong evidence of natural selection acting on genes associated with behavior and nervous system development.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Tameness is crucial for domestic animals to live close to humans, but it will not help a rabbit that finds itself back in the wild survive, so natural selection removes the genetic variants linked to tameness,” Andrade explained.</p>

<p>Researchers have a new theory to explain how early humans might have used sharpened Clovis points to hunt megafauna, like mammoths and mastodons, around 13,000 years ago. </p>



<p>Instead of throwing spears or jabbing at these massive creatures, the researchers suggest that early humans used a less hands-on strategy to hunt. They braced the spear’s butt against the ground, angling the weapon upward to impale charging animals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The immense force of the animal’s movement would drive the spear deeper into its body, creating a devastating wound - more severe than what even the strongest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-masters-woodworking-crafting-wooden-hunting-weapons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric hunters</a> could inflict on their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hunting-with-planted-spears-nbsp">Hunting with planted spears<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Drawing from various historical writings and artwork, the archaeologists examined evidence from around the world about hunting with planted spears.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts also conducted the first experimental study focusing on how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timeline-early-humans-great-migration-reached-america-challenged-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stone weapons</a> like Clovis points might react to the force of an approaching animal when used in a pike hunting technique. </p>



<p>The results revealed that once the sharp rock penetrated the flesh, the spear’s engineered mounting system activated, making the spear tip behave like a modern hollow-point bullet, causing serious damage to creatures such as mastodons, bison, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ugly-fossil-unveils-secrets-of-extinct-cats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">saber-toothed cats</a>.</p>



<p>Study lead author Scott Byram is an expert in the Archaeological Research Facility at <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Berkeley</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This ancient Native American design was an amazing innovation in hunting strategies,” said Byram. “This distinctive Indigenous technology is providing a window into hunting and survival techniques used for millennia throughout much of the world.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clovis-points-used-by-early-humans-to-hunt">Clovis points used by early humans to hunt</h2>



<p>The study sheds light on the longstanding debate among archaeologists about how North American communities used Clovis points, some of the most commonly found Ice Age artifacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Named after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-comet-impact-triggered-the-invention-of-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clovis, New Mexico</a>, where the first of these stone tools were discovered nearly a century ago, Clovis points were crafted from rocks like chert, flint, or jasper. </p>

<p>These tools range in size from a person’s thumb to a midsize smartphone, featuring a razor-sharp edge and fluted indentations on both sides of their base. Thousands have been recovered across the U.S., with some even found within preserved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-drove-woolly-mammoths-to-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoth</a> skeletons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-humans-used-a-complex-system-nbsp-to-hunt">Early humans used a complex system<strong>&nbsp;</strong>to hunt</h2>



<p>Popular culture has often depicted Clovis points as the tips of thrown spears used in hunting, as seen in video games like <em>Far Cry Primal</em> and movies like <em>10,000 B.C</em>. However, these depictions likely oversimplify the realities of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-age-data-analysis-reshapes-climate-future-lowers-warming-estimates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life during the Ice Age</a>. </p>



<p>According to Byram and his co-author, Jun Sunseri, a Berkeley associate professor of anthropology, Clovis points were likely part of a more complex hunting system.</p>

<p>The team posits that this system also involved bone shafts, wooden spear bases, and bindings made of pine pitch and lacing - all elements that have not survived the passage of time.</p>



<p>“You have to look beyond the simple artifact,” Jun noted. “One of the things that's key here is that we're looking at this as an engineered system that requires multiple kinds of sub-specialties within our field and other fields.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-the-valuable-spears">Preserving the valuable spears</h2>



<p>Given the scarcity of suitable materials for tool-making in some regions, it would make sense that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-impacted-earth-than-previously-thought-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early humans</a> were cautious about risking their valuable spears during the hunt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Byram, who has explored the historical context of planted pike hunting through various archival records, suggests that these communities likely wouldn’t have thrown their tools recklessly.</p>



<p>“People who are doing metal military artifact analysis know all about it because it was used for stopping horses in warfare,” Byram said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But prior to that, and in other contexts with boar hunting or bear hunting, it wasn't very well known. It's a theme that comes back in literature quite a bit. But for whatever reason, it hasn't been talked about too much in anthropology.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-pike-hunting-theory">Testing the pike hunting theory</h2>



<p>To test their pike hunting hypothesis, the Berkeley team constructed a test platform to measure the force that a spear system could withstand before breaking.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their low-tech, static simulation of an animal attack with a braced Clovis point spear demonstrated how the spear system responded under stress, mimicking the energy generated by a charging animal.</p>

<p>“The kind of energy that you can generate with the human arm is nothing like the kind of energy generated by a charging animal. It's an order of magnitude different,” Jun said. “These spears were engineered to do what they're doing to protect the user.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clovis-points-and-traditional-spears">Clovis points and traditional spears</h2>



<p>Byram had pondered this idea for decades, recalling his graduate school days when he crafted replica Clovis points and traditional spears. </p>



<p>The time and effort invested in these tools led him to consider their potential uses beyond what had been previously assumed.</p>



<p>“It just started to make sense to me that it actually had a different purpose than some of the other tools,” Byram said. “Unlike some of the notched arrowheads, it was a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-hunting-cave-lions-earliest-evidence-uncovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more substantial weapon</a>. And it was probably also used defensively.”</p>



<p>Conversations between Jun, Byram, and Kent Lightfoot, a Berkeley anthropology professor emeritus, during the early days of the pandemic sparked renewed interest in exploring this theory.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sophisticated-engineering-behind-clovis-points-nbsp">Sophisticated engineering behind Clovis points<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Lightfoot, who also contributed to the study, emphasized the sophisticated engineering behind Clovis technology, noting its importance in understanding how early Indigenous people coexisted with now-extinct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tracing-the-disappearance-of-north-americas-megafauna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">megafauna</a>.</p>



<p>“The sophisticated Clovis technology that developed independently in North America is testimony to the ingenuity and skills that early Indigenous people employed in their cohabitation of the ancient landscape with now-extinct megafauna,” Lightfoot said.</p>



<p>In the coming months, the team plans to further test their theory by constructing a replica mammoth and simulating what a pike attack might have looked like as it impacted a massive, fast-moving mammal.</p>



<p>“Sometimes in archaeology, the pieces just start fitting together like they seem to now with Clovis technology, and this puts pike hunting front and center with extinct megafauna. It opens up a whole new way of looking at how people lived among these incredible animals during much of human history,” Byram concluded.</p>

<p>In a surprise revelation, Semaglutide, also known as the miracle weight-loss drug Ozempic, is now proving to prevent heart attacks, even in people who are overweight and have preexisting cardiovascular issues.</p>



<p>Originally created to prevent diabetes by helping people control their blood sugar, semaglutide mimics a hormone that regulates appetite and insulin release. Its success in promoting weight loss has been a game-changer for many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/want-to-lose-weight-try-eating-more-protein-and-fiber/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dealing with obesity</a>.</p>



<p>What’s really interesting is the ongoing research that points to its potential benefits for heart health, suggesting it might help lower the risk of cardiovascular events in people with diabetes.</p>



<p>This fascinating insight, shared by Professor John Deanfield at the <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/cardiovascular/ucl-institute-cardiovascular-science" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science</a>, offers hope for those facing various heart conditions, including heart failure.</p>

<p>In the absence of written records or digital aids, memory served as the primary repository of critical information.</p>



<p>One such method, as legends narrate, was the astonishing act of casting a child who had just borne witness to an important event into a river.</p>



<p>This stark and dramatic blend of physical and emotional experiences was assumed to arm the child with an unshakeable, lifelong memory of the event, ensuring that the significance of the moment would never be forgotten.</p>

<p>Understanding that memory is shaped by both past and future events opens new avenues for addressing memory-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD, and other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alarming-reality-one-in-four-americans-with-cognitive-impairment-lives-alone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive impairments</a>. </p>



<p>Traditional treatments have often focused on reinforcing specific memories or mitigating traumatic ones through therapies that target synaptic connections. </p>



<p>However, the discovery of heterosynaptic plasticity suggests that therapeutic strategies could be expanded to consider how unrelated, emotionally potent experiences might influence memory retention and recall.</p>



<p>For instance, therapies could be developed to introduce positive experiences or controlled stimuli after traumatic events to strengthen or weaken specific memories, potentially alleviating the symptoms of PTSD. </p>



<p>Similarly, in the context of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, understanding how future events might impact the retention of memories could lead to innovative approaches that preserve cognitive function for longer periods.</p>



<p>This broader perspective on memory formation also emphasizes the importance of emotional health in cognitive resilience. </p>



<p>By recognizing the interconnectedness of past and future experiences in shaping our memories, researchers and clinicians can design more holistic and effective interventions, paving the way for improved mental health outcomes.</p>

Memory has always been a crucial aspect of the human...

<p>Energy companies employ persistent and personalized pressure tactics to persuade landowners to permit hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on their properties when signing oil and gas leases.</p>



<p>Even when landowners decline, these companies often use legalized compulsion to proceed with fracking, according to a new study.</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-fracking-linked-to-mysterious-gentle-tremors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hydraulic fracturing</a> is a controversial issue, but a lot of the controversy has been focused on the big-picture consequences, for the climate and the economy,” said Benjamin Farrer, the study’s lead author and a former PhD student at <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a>.</p>



<p>“One of our hopes for this paper is that it will encourage policymakers to pay more attention to the individual experiences of the people who are closest to the issue.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compulsory-unitization-in-fracking">Compulsory unitization in fracking</h2>



<p>Led by researchers at Binghamton University, <a href="https://www.suny.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State University of New York</a>, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (<a href="https://www.unlv.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNLV</a>), the study uncovered various types of shady and unsavory practices employed by oil and gas companies against landowners.</p>



<p>Because many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-fuel-extraction-must-be-stopped-to-limit-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuel</a> reservoirs in the United States are located under private land, energy companies must negotiate with landowners, offering compensation for access to the minerals beneath their properties. </p>



<p>However, a well is only economically viable if it can drain a large spatial area, which requires pooling multiple mineral claims into a single working contract. </p>



<p>Landowners may hold out for various reasons, including concerns about health risks, financial dissatisfaction, or simple unavailability.</p>



<p>This is where compulsory unitization comes into play. In many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oil-and-gas-production-linked-to-77-billion-in-annual-health-care-costs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oil- and gas</a>-producing states, this law permits companies to compel remaining landowners to join a drilling project if a certain percentage of the land atop a reservoir has already been leased. </p>



<p>For instance, if 65% of the landowners on top of a gas deposit have given permission, the remaining 35% can be legally compelled to comply.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vertical-and-horizontal-drilling">Vertical and horizontal drilling</h2>



<p>“Under conventional vertical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biden-policy-aims-to-block-arctic-oil-drilling-for-conservation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drilling</a>, the use of compulsion generally was a net positive for mineral owners -- it prevented holdouts looking for better contract terms from tanking a project, and it allowed small properties or properties along the border of a drilling area to force themselves into a contract if the drilling company tried to shut them out,” explained Robert Holahan, associate professor of political science at Binghamton University and co-author of the study.</p>



<p>“Under fracking, though, where the drilling happens horizontally under multiple properties, compulsory unitization can force mineral owners who otherwise don't want to lease their property to do so.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fracking-practices-on-ohio-landowners">Fracking practices on Ohio landowners</h2>



<p>The research team, which included Holahan, Farrer, and former Binghamton students Kellyanne Allen and Tara Riggs, analyzed data from Ohio, a state that experienced a fracking boom in the 2010s.</p>



<p>They obtained the full database from Ohio’s <a href="https://ohiodnr.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Natural Resources</a>, covering compulsory unitization applications from January 2014 to April 2021.</p>



<p>The team reviewed a random sample of 37 applications, which documented each time a landowner was contacted about leasing, including the method, date, and outcome of the contact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-examples-of-fracking-pressures-on-landowners">Examples of fracking pressures on landowners</h2>



<p>In one notable case, a landowner opposed to signing a lease was persistently pursued by a company representative, or “landman.” </p>



<p>Despite the landowner’s refusal to engage, the landman continued to call, send letters, and even visit her home. When the landowner did not answer the door, the landman spoke with her neighbors and family members.</p>



<p>In another case, a landman contacted a landowner undergoing radiation treatment at a hospital. The landowner expressed interest in discussing the lease after returning home, yet the landman continued to press the matter while the landowner was still hospitalized.</p>



<p>“Overall, we find widespread use of personalized tactics like phone calls and visits, as well as evidence that these tactics are used persistently, as landmen make multiple attempts over multiple months to contact landowners. We also find that many negotiations end in compulsion rather than in consent,” the researchers noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-energy-policy">Broader implications for energy policy</h2>



<p>The study’s findings indicate that compulsory unitization is being utilized not only with economic holdouts and unreachable landowners but also with various types of landowners, underscoring the widespread use of these pressure tactics.</p>



<p>“Legal instruments, like compulsory unitization or pooling, are often designed to solve one type of problem (ensuring all mineral owners get a fair share of revenues from an oil or gas well), but eventually can be used for other purposes (forcing mineral owners to lease their rights),” said Holahan. </p>



<p>“Effective resource policy requires a continuous updating of the law as technologies change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-research-and-future-studies">Ongoing research and future studies</h2>



<p>The research team is conducting a follow-up survey with individuals whose conversation records were analyzed in the study to verify the accuracy of their findings. </p>



<p>Additionally, Holahan and his colleagues have surveyed 3,000 residents in the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania to gauge opinions on drilling and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wind-turbines-are-displacing-bats-from-their-forest-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wind turbines</a>, aiming to better understand how, or if, 'green energy' is viewed differently from 'conventional energy' among property owners.</p>

<p>Next time you manage to dodge a viral attack, you might want to extend a note of gratitude to our ancestors, not the human ones though, but the microbial ones. </p>



<p>It seems the roots of human immunity have been quietly existing for billions of years in the form of two critical defenses, laying its foundation even before complex life birthed itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbial-ancestors-with-macro-roles">Microbial ancestors with macro roles</h2>



<p>The microscopic bodyguards, known as viperins and argonautes, have been functioning as the primary shield against viruses not only in humans but across all complex life forms -- from plants to insects.</p>



<p>Tracing their origin back, these proteins have been bestowed upon us by a group of microbes termed Asgard archaea, as per a study from <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Texas at Austin</a>.</p>



<p>It's rather intriguing that variations of these defense proteins can also be spotted in bacteria. However, the proteins present in complex life forms have the closest resemblance to those in Asgard archaea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-viperins-and-argonautes-work">How Viperins and Argonautes work</h2>



<p>How do these microscopic entities fight off giant viruses to keep life forms healthy? </p>



<p>When viperins detect foreign DNA, a hallmark of a potentially harmful virus, they amend the DNA inhibiting the cell from creating more DNA copies, halting the virus in its tracks. </p>

<p>Argonautes, on the other hand, seize foreign DNA and chop it up, effectively limiting the virus.</p>



<p>Beyond that, in more complex organisms, argonautes can obstruct the virus from generating proteins through a process termed RNA silencing. </p>



<p>Whew! Now that's one impressive microbial defense strategy, isn't it?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-microbial-ancestors">Understanding the microbial ancestors</h2>



<p>The game-changing study was headed by Brett Baker, an associate professor of integrative biology and marine science at UT Austin.</p>



<p>“It adds more support to the fact that the Asgards are our microbial ancestors,” Baker noted. </p>



<p>It further substantiates that these Asgard archaea contributed not only to the structural proteins in complex life forms but even some of its defense systems.</p>

<p>The team, for the first time, identified a vast set of defense mechanisms in archaea, previously known only in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a>. They compared proteins involved in immunity across the tree of life and found several closely related ones. </p>



<p>Using an AI tool named ColabFold, they predicted whether proteins with similar amino acid sequences also boasted similar three-dimensional structures, essential to determining its function. </p>



<p>The findings suggested that variations of the viperin protein likely maintained consistent structures and functions across the tree of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-asgard-viperins-in-immunity">Role of Asgard viperins in immunity</h2>



<p>The researchers took an extra step to illustrate the effectiveness of Asgard viperins. </p>



<p>They cloned Asgard archaea genomes into bacteria, induced the bacteria to express the proteins, and then exposed the bacteria to viruses.</p>



<p>What they found was truly remarkable -- the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-in-lakes-help-fight-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a> with the immune proteins survived better than those without.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-research">Implications for future research</h2>



<p>The insights gleaned from the study on viperins and argonautes not only illuminate the ancient origins of our immune defenses but also pave the way for innovative applications in biotechnology and medicine. </p>



<p>Understanding the mechanisms by which these proteins function opens the door to harnessing their capabilities for novel antiviral therapies. </p>



<p>By mimicking or enhancing the action of viperins and argonautes, scientists could potentially develop new strategies to combat viral infections, offering more effective treatment options that are rooted in our own <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/phagosome-crucial-overlooked-player-in-our-microbiome-gut-bacteria-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary history</a>. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the evolutionary continuity of these proteins across diverse life forms suggests that future research may lead to the discovery of additional microbial-derived molecules that could bolster our immune responses, revealing an untapped reservoir of natural defenses waiting to be explored. </p>



<p>As we deepen our comprehension of these ancient mechanisms, we not only honor the legacy of our microbial ancestors but also unlock the potential for transformative advancements in health and medicine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viperins-argonautes-and-future-immunology">Viperins, argonautes, and future immunology</h2>



<p>All this research points to an exciting possibility – the key to understanding modern eukaryotic immunity might just lie in uncovering its most ancient origins. </p>



<p>"It’s undeniable at this point that Asgard archaea contributed a lot to the complexity that we see in eukaryotes today," said Pedro Leão, a former postdoctoral researcher in Baker’s lab and now an assistant professor at <a href="https://www.ru.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Radboud University</a> in the Netherlands.</p>

<p>In a stellar display of celestial navigation, ESA's Juice spacecraft has expertly navigated a tricky and world-first lunar-Earth gravitational flyby, setting its course for the depths of the outer Solar System.</p>



<p>This mission is a critical step towards unraveling the secrets of Jupiter and its intriguing moons, and in the grand scheme of things, expanding our knowledge about possible life-friendly habitats beyond our blue planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-precision-ballet-of-celestial-bodies">Precision ballet of celestial bodies</h2>



<p>Being in the right place and at the right time is an art -- and this is exactly what the European Space Agency’s <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Juice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer</a> (Juice) demonstrated this week with a perfect lunar-Earth flyby.</p>



<p>With this maneuver, Juice didn't just prove stellar navigation is possible, but that it's a sublime blend of science and artistry.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/juice-spacecraft-is-zooming-by-earth-today-on-its-way-to-jupiter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">On August 19, 2024</a>, it danced dangerously close to the Moon, followed by a rendezvous with Earth just over a day later, in the first-ever lunar-Earth flyby for a gravity assist on its way to Jupiter.</p>



<p>Why? To maneuver itself towards Venus using the gravitational pull of these celestial bodies. As you can imagine, this wasn't easy. It needed extremely accurate, real-time navigation to keep Juice on its intended path.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-juice-executed-a-perfect-flyby">Juice executed a perfect flyby</h2>



<p>Ignacio Tanco, the mission's Spacecraft Operations Manager, could hardly contain his excitement. "The gravity assist flyby was flawless, everything went without a hitch, and we were thrilled to see Juice coming back so close to Earth." he said.</p>



<p>The main goal of this flyby was to adjust Juice’s pace and direction. Simple enough, right? Not really. It involved some intricate calculations.</p>



<p>The Moon’s gravity increased Juice’s speed by 2,000 mph, guiding it towards Earth. Then, it was Earth's turn to decrease the spacecraft’s speed by 10,700 mph, effectively rerouting it <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-there-life-on-venus-the-possibility-cant-be-ruled-out/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">towards Venus</a>.</p>



<p>The result? A deflection by an angle of 100° from its original route - all without guzzling up too much fuel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-fuel-for-a-long-journey-ahead">Saving fuel for a long journey ahead</h2>



<p>This deft maneuver not only conserved between 100 to 150 kg (220 to 330 lbs) of fuel for the Juice spacecraft but also ensured a bit of extra propellant remained in its tanks.</p>



<p>“Thanks to very precise navigation by ESA’s Flight Dynamics team, we managed to use only a tiny fraction of the propellant reserved for this flyby," added Ignacio.</p>

<p>This additional fuel not only provides a buffer for unforeseen circumstances but could also come in handy, allowing the spacecraft to get even closer to Jupiter’s largest moon, Ganymede, than originally planned.</p>



<p>The proximity to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-moon-ganymede-has-huge-internal-ocean-and-salty-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ganymede</a> presents a unique opportunity for detailed observations and data collection.</p>



<p>"This will add to the margins we keep for a rainy day, or to extend the science mission once we get to Jupiter," Ignacio added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calibrating-scientific-instruments">Calibrating scientific instruments</h2>



<p>While the primary objective of the flyby was to alter Juice’s trajectory to optimize its mission path, it also offered a priceless chance to thoroughly test the spacecraft’s <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2022/12/Juice_s_science_instruments" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced scientific instruments</a> in the harsh environment of space.</p>



<p>This testing phase is crucial, as it helps ensure that all systems are functioning correctly and can withstand the challenges of the mission, ultimately contributing to the success of future explorations of the Jovian system.</p>



<p>Claire Vallat, Juice Operations Scientist, underscored the significance of this testing phase, saying, “The timing and location of this double flyby allow us to thoroughly study the behavior of Juice’s instruments."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-juice-continues-voyage-to-jupiter-after-flyby">Juice continues voyage to Jupiter after flyby</h2>



<p>Juice's journey is far from done. After its <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Juice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">launch in April 2023</a>, and now with what could be called a "secondary launch" this week after returning to Earth, the spacecraft is now journeying towards Venus, with another flyby slated for August 2025.</p>



<p>This rendezvous with Venus will further adjust Juice’s trajectory, setting it on a course back to Earth for two more flybys.</p>



<p>Once Juice reaches Jupiter, the real work begins. It will scrutinize the gas giant and its three large ocean-bearing moons -- Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa -- seen as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/iron-snow-brings-hope-for-finding-life-on-jupiters-moon-europa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential habitats for life</a>.</p>



<p>Juice’s endeavor is a significant stride in humankind’s exploration of the outer Solar System. Each move, each observation, moves us closer to answering the deeper questions about our place in the cosmos.</p>



<p>As Juice continues on its path, it will bring us face to face with discoveries that could change our understanding of the universe forever.</p>

<p>Honey bees may play a significant role in increasing virus levels in wild bumblebees each spring, according to a study conducted by researchers at the Pennsylvania State University.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By analyzing seasonal trends in the transmission of parasites and viruses among bees, the experts found that honey bees consistently carried higher levels of viruses compared to bumblebees.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, while both bee species showed lower virus prevalence during the winter, only bumblebees experienced negligible virus levels by spring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-honey-bees-may-reinfect-bumblebees-in-spring">Honey bees may reinfect bumblebees in spring</h2>



<p>Heather Hines, an associate professor of biology and entomology at Penn State’s <a href="https://agsci.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">College of Agricultural Sciences</a> and the study's corresponding author, suggested that these results indicate honey bees might be reinfecting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-increasingly-stressed-over-the-past-century/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bumblebees</a> in the spring, a time when bumblebees would otherwise have very low virus prevalence.</p>



<p>“Our data suggests that healthy wild bee communities require healthy honey bee colony management,” Hines said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Practices that help reduce disease loads in honey bees include ensuring cross-season high-quality nutrition, reducing pesticides and mitigating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breeding-cleaner-bees-may-stop-varroa-mites-in-their-tracks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Varroa mites</a>, which are known to be responsible for higher late-season viral loads.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-honey-bee-colony-management-nbsp">Importance of honey bee colony management<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>According to Hines, while the study highlights honey bees as spring viral reservoirs, this does not imply that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honey-bees-face-a-multitude-of-complex-stressors-in-the-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">honey bees</a> are detrimental. Rather, it underscores the importance of good honey bee colony management for the overall health of pollinator communities.</p>



<p>Pollinators are vital for the reproduction of many food crops and wild plants worldwide. Managed honey bee colonies significantly benefit agriculture by pollinating plants, while native bee species like bumblebees and solitary bees provide natural pollination services that can enhance fruit set and are essential for many plant species.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamics-of-parasite-and-virus-spread">Dynamics of parasite and virus spread</h2>



<p>Bumblebees, native to the United States, are particularly important for pollinating crops like blueberries and cranberries, while honey bees, originally from Asia, excel in pollinating most orchard crops due to their ability to recruit large numbers of foragers.</p>



<p>Hines argued that although honey bees and bumblebees share many traits, they also have differences that influence the dynamics of parasite and virus spread.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Honey bees are managed bees that are perennial, while bumblebees are annual - overwintering as new queens and starting and growing their colonies in the following spring,” she explained. These differing colony dynamics likely impact how diseases are transmitted between managed and native bees.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bee-viruses-across-seasons">Bee viruses across seasons</h2>



<p>The study focused on the spread of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honeybees-may-be-superspreaders-of-plant-viruses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a> and parasites across seasons, particularly examining deformed wing virus (DWV) and black queen cell virus (BQCV), which are harmful to both honey and bumblebees and can spread between species. </p>



<p>The researchers collected both types of bees at multiple time points across four years from six sites in Center County. They then screened the bees for viruses using molecular biomarkers and for protozoan pathogens and parasites using a microscope, comparing virus and pest prevalence across different seasons.</p>



<p>The results showed that both DWV and BQCV were common in honey and bumblebees, with DWV levels peaking in the fall and BQCV in mid-season.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, honey bees consistently harbored higher levels of these viruses throughout the year. The most significant seasonal difference was observed in the spring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-honey-bees-as-a-viral-reservoir-nbsp">Honey bees as a viral reservoir&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Bumblebees had negligible levels of viruses in the spring, suggesting queens are either resistant or die during overwintering if infected,” Hines said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Honey bee colonies tend to have lower viral prevalence by spring as well; however, they still retain fairly high viral levels compared to bumblebees. This means that honey bees serve as a viral reservoir that can reinfect native bee communities that would naturally purge these viruses in the spring.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The study contributes to the growing body of research on the impact of managed honey bees on disease levels in bee communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Hines Lab has been particularly involved in exploring how landscapes in the eastern United States affect bumblebee pathogen loads, aiming to identify manageable factors that can most effectively reduce disease in these bees.</p>



<p>Looking forward, the researchers plan to conduct further studies on queen immunity and vulnerability to pathogens, which could provide deeper insights into these patterns and help inform strategies for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-conservation-relies-on-plant-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bee conservation</a>.</p>

<p>As the global human population continues to grow, more than half of Earth's land is expected to see an increasing overlap between humans and animals by 2070, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan (U-M).&nbsp;</p>



<p>This growing human-wildlife interaction could lead to heightened conflicts between people and animals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, understanding where these overlaps will occur and which species will interact with humans is crucial for urban planners, conservationists, and countries committed to international conservation efforts.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-populations-of-humans-and-wildlife-nbsp">Populations of humans and wildlife<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Study lead author Deqiang Ma is a postdoctoral research fellow at the <a href="https://seas.umich.edu/globalchangebiology#:~:text=The%20IGCB's%20Mission,our%20climate%20and%20sustainability%20crises)." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U-M Institute for Global Change Biology</a> in the School for Environment and Sustainability.</p>



<p>“We found that the overlap between populations of humans and wildlife will increase across about 57% of the global lands, but it will decrease across only about 12% of the global lands,” noted Ma.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We also found that agricultural and forest areas will experience substantial increases of overlap in the future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-driving-the-human-wildlife-overlap">What is driving the human-wildlife overlap?</h2>



<p>The study revealed that this increasing human-wildlife overlap will be driven primarily by human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-population-will-peak-at-10-3-billion-by-2085/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">population growth</a> rather than by climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In other words, the expansion of human settlements into previously undeveloped areas will be the main driver of this overlap, rather than climate change causing animals to shift their habitats.</p>



<p>Neil Carter is the study's principal investigator and an associate professor of environment and sustainability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“In many places around the world, more people will interact with wildlife in the coming decades and often those wildlife communities will comprise different kinds of animals than the ones that live there now,” said Carter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This means that all sorts of novel interactions, good and bad, between people and wildlife will emerge in the near future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calculating-future-human-wildlife-overlap-nbsp">Calculating future human-wildlife overlap<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>To calculate future human-wildlife overlap, the researchers developed an index that combined estimates of where human populations are likely to grow and the spatial distributions of 22,374 species of terrestrial amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts based their projections on previously published data that forecasted species distributions based on their climatic niches and on projections of economic development, global society, and demographics.</p>



<p>“The index we created showed that the majority of global lands will experience increases in human-wildlife overlap, and this increasing overlap is the result of the expansion of human population much more so than changes in species distributions caused by climate change,” Ma explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-major-areas-of-concern">Major areas of concern</h2>



<p>The researchers found that areas with high current and projected human-wildlife overlap, such as China and India, are already densely populated.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, they also identified forests in Africa and South America as major areas of concern due to the expected significant increase in overlap in these regions. “The reason that is concerning is because those areas have very high biodiversity that would experience greater pressure in the future,” Carter said.</p>



<p>The study also projected a decrease in median <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/environmental-changes-put-a-cap-on-species-richness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species richness</a> - meaning the variety of species - in many forests across Africa and South America.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In South America, mammal richness is projected to decline by 33%, amphibian richness by 45%, reptile richness by 40%, and bird richness by 37%. In Africa, mammal richness is expected to decline by 21%, and bird richness by 26%.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-pronounced-human-wildlife-interactions-nbsp">More pronounced human-wildlife interactions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to Carter, preserving biodiversity in these overlapping zones is vital. He noted that there are cases of human-wildlife interactions that are both good and bad, but we anticipate that they're going to become more pronounced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For example, COVID-19 was the result of human contact with wild animals, and there is concern that new diseases will emerge from greater encounters between people and certain wildlife species,” said Carter. “But you also have species that provide important benefits to people, like reducing the abundances of pests.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Ma's analysis showed that birds that consume insects in agricultural areas may decline in croplands experiencing increased human-wildlife overlap by 2070, which could affect pest control.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“What we're doing is finding those areas and saying, if you have cropland or pastures here, are you going to have species move into those areas or species moving away from those areas,” Carter said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Are those new croplands or pastures going to be an additional threat to the species or could there be ecosystem services harnessed for free?”</p>



<p>Carter also highlighted the critical role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scavengers-clean-up-wetlands-and-boost-their-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scavengers</a>, such as vultures and hyenas, in cleaning waste from urban areas and other landscapes, which helps reduce the prevalence of diseases like rabies, anthrax, and bovine tuberculosis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Hyenas and other species that are vilified or persecuted because they are scavengers provide a lot of disease reduction benefits. On one hand, they're viewed as a threat, but on the other hand, they're providing free health benefits,” explained Carter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creative-conservation-planning-is-needed">Creative conservation planning is needed</h2>



<p>According to the researchers, conservation strategies will need to evolve, particularly in regions that have not seen significant human settlement in the past.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Traditional conservation methods, such as establishing protected areas with restricted human access, may become increasingly difficult to implement as more areas of the world are shared by both humans and wildlife.</p>



<p>“There's also a significant environmental justice argument around the validity of telling communities that may have lived in a certain area for generations that they have to move,” Carter added.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our study suggests that with more areas of the world expected to be shared both by people and wildlife, conservation planning will have to get more creative and inclusive.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-engaging-local-communities-in-conservation-efforts">Engaging local communities in conservation efforts</h2>



<p>The researchers advocate for engaging local communities in the conservation process to build interest and improve outcomes. </p>



<p>This could involve establishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildlife-corridors-habitat-fragmentation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife corridors</a> to connect existing protected areas with new ones, creating temporary protected areas during critical wildlife periods like breeding seasons, and exploring other innovative conservation strategies.</p>



<p>“We care a lot about which areas can support populations of endangered species, like tigers, and how human communities interact with these species,” said Carter.</p>



<p>“In some places it's going to be really hard to do everything at once: to grow crops and have urban areas and protect these species and their habitats. But if we can start planning now, we have a lot of tools to help us promote sustainable coexistence.”</p>

When that puzzle is vibrant and diverse, filled with different landscapes and habitats and rich in biodiversity, it's more stable, more resilient, and bursting at the seams with life.</p>



<p>It's a thrilling discovery, one that challenges us to rethink how we approach conservation efforts and manage our landscapes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-landscape-habitats-and-biodiversity">Landscape habitats and biodiversity</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, a leading hub of research and innovation, has pulled back the curtain on this dynamic world in an exciting new study led by ecologists.</p>



<p>Their findings bring insightful answers to critical questions on conservation and land management. It even shines a light, bright and compelling, on how food chains operate across multiple habitats.</p>



<p>The study was conducted across 30 field sites in the Southwest UK, offering a sweeping, panoramic look at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-biodiversity-wildlife-habitats-delicate-balancing-act/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">varied habitats</a> across the landscape. What the researchers discovered was, to use a colloquial term, pretty awesome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-variety-is-the-spice-of-life">Variety is the spice of life</h2>



<p>You know the old saying, “variety is the spice of life”? Well, it turns out, it holds true for our habitats as well. </p>



<p>The study unearthed significant differences in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbial-awakening-arctic-food-webs-are-transforming-from-green-to-brown/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food web structures</a> among landscapes with one, two, or three habitats. The more varied the habitat, the more diverse the species and the more evenly distributed they were.</p>



<p>A landscape peppered with multiple habitats is like a party hosting a bigger crowd, including those who are seasoned party-goers and know how to mix up the fun, leading to a more spirited, vibrant environment. </p>



<p>In our case, habitat specialists, the ones particular about the party they attend, perk up when they see a multi-habitat landscape, leading to a dramatic increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-monitor-biodiversity-through-animal-sounds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overall biodiversity</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-landscapes-and-habitats">Biodiversity, landscapes, and habitats</h2>



<p>“Conservation and restoration projects increasingly focus on landscape-scale efforts, however, data on species interactions are often limited to specific habitats, such as woodlands, farmland or urban areas,” explained lead author <a href="https://www.biology.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-talya-hackett" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr Talya Hackett</a>, who ran the project from Bristol’s <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Biological Sciences</a> and is currently at <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>.  </p>



<p>But landscapes with varied environments displayed a different picture. They showed a tougher resistance to species loss. </p>



<p>In other words, despite life's ups and downs, they tend to bounce back quickly. Besides, a higher variety of habitats also led to better pollination services, a boon for our environment that depends heavily on this critical natural process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multiplication-not-addition">Multiplication, not addition</h2>



<p>But the multiple habitats did more than just attract a larger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-shaped-plant-biodiversity-for-thousands-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">number of species</a> or provide better pollination. They brought something unique to the table.</p>



<p>If we think of each habitat as a piece of a puzzle, then the complete picture -- the landscape wasn’t merely an addition of these pieces, it was something more.</p>



<p>It showcased properties, like increased buffering against species loss and improved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hornets-are-the-most-important-pollinators-for-some-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollination</a>, that you can't predict from looking at individual habitats.</p>



<p>That's what Professor Jane Memmott, the project leader and co-lead author emphasized.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-conservation-strategies">Shift in conservation strategies</h2>



<p>These findings have profound implications for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation strategies</a>. Historically, our efforts have centered around specific habitats, such as prairie restoration, wetland creation, or connecting similar ecosystems. </p>



<p>However, the latest research highlights the necessity of a broader approach. To effectively boost biodiversity conservation, we must prioritize preserving landscapes that encompass multiple habitats. </p>



<p>This holistic view recognizes the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how they support a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-fill-a-150-year-gap-in-biodiversity-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wide variety of species</a>. </p>



<p>By maintaining diverse landscapes, we can create resilient environments that thrive amidst changing conditions. </p>



<p>This shift in strategy is vital for ensuring the survival of countless species and promoting overall ecosystem health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-is-bright">Future is bright</h2>



<p>The Bristol team plans to dive deeper into the effects of various habitat combinations and their compatibility.</p>



<p>They also aim to explore other ecological functions -- such as seed dispersal and decomposition -- in multi-habitat landscapes. </p>



<p>These studies could very well revolutionize agricultural practices, possibly boosting food production and pest control, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maintaining ecosystem health</a>.</p>



<p>“Mobile species effectively glue the various <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-know-far-less-about-four-footed-animals-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitats</a> together, underscoring the intricate connections that sustain biodiversity and ecosystem services,” concluded Professor Memmott.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Scientists are transforming chocolate into a functional food by infusing it with probiotics and prebiotics, aiming to create a treat that satisfies cravings while supporting gut health. </p>



<p>The challenge lies in maintaining chocolate's beloved texture and flavor while adding health benefits.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
