<p>Male mice can learn to be aggressive just by watching. The twist is that the effect shows up after they see familiar cage mates fight, not strangers, and it appears to run through a specific hub in the brain.</p>



<p>This work adds a new layer to the classic <a href="https://www.simplypsychology.org/bystander-effect.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bystander effect</a>, shifting the focus from helping behavior to the spread of hostile actions. It also highlights observational <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-oil-omega-3-capsules-have-been-found-to-help-control-aggression/">learning</a>, the process of picking up behavior by seeing others do it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aggression-in-male-mice">Aggression in male mice </h2>



<p>Jacob C. Nordman of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (<a href="https://www.siumed.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SIU</a>) and his team designed a simple setup. Mice watched either known peers or unfamiliar mice attack intruders for 10 minutes, then were tested 30 minutes later in their own resident territory.</p>



<p>In a new <a href="https://www.jneurosci.org/content/early/2025/08/18/JNEUROSCI.1018-25.2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a>, the researchers report that only male witnesses who had observed familiar fighters showed a later uptick in attacking. Females did not show the effect, and observing strangers did not change later behavior.</p>



<p>The group chose this design to separate mere exposure to violence from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/geese-guide-the-flock-with-boldness-not-aggression/">social</a> context of the model. Familiarity turned out to be the on switch for later aggression in males.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-circuit-of-aggression">Brain circuit of aggression</h2>



<p>The experiments point to the amygdala, a region important for emotion and social signals. Within it, the medial amygdala contains a posterior ventral subdivision that previous work ties to aggression priming.</p>



<p>Prior <a href="https://www.jneurosci.org/content/40/25/4858" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> showed that repeated attacks strengthen connections from this MeApv node to downstream targets that control how often and how long mice attack. That background helped in framing the new results.</p>



<p>The team recorded neural activity in this area during the witnessing phase using fiber photometry, a population recording method that reads calcium-linked fluorescence in defined cells. A recent <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11582208/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> describes how this approach lets scientists monitor activity in freely moving animals.</p>



<p>Signals in excitatory MeApv neurons rose when males watched familiar peers attack, but not when they watched unfamiliar fighters. The pattern fits a model where recognized peers engage circuitry that prepares, or primes, an aggressive state.</p>



<p>“We previously found that these neurons are involved in an ‘aggression priming’ <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamines-role-in-male-aggression-fades-with-fighting-experience/">effect</a>,” said Nordman. The new study tested whether simply seeing known peers act aggressively would recruit the same circuit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-familiarity-matters">Why familiarity matters</h2>



<p>Social identity shapes imitation in many species. In humans, a long term longitudinal <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12661882/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> shows that heavier exposure to violent media in childhood predicts more aggressive behavior in young adulthood, even after accounting for important confounders.</p>



<p>A <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/204790" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> from 2006 revealed consistent short-term and long-term links between violent media exposure and aggressive behavior, thoughts, and arousal. That literature helps explain why repeated observation can change later actions.</p>



<p>In mice, familiarity may heighten relevance, salience, or identification with the model. The selective MeApv activation during familiar observations hints that the brain tags familiar peers differently, which can bias later choices toward attack.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirming-the-role-of-neurons">Confirming the role of neurons </h2>



<p>To move beyond correlation, the team manipulated the MeApv neurons during observation. Chemogenetic silencing cuts the later aggression that usually follows watching familiar fighters, which argues the activity is necessary.</p>



<p>The reverse effect was also observed. Activating the same neuron population while males watched strangers, who normally do not trigger the effect, made later attacks more likely.</p>



<p>Related animal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnins.2024.1433993/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> indicates that acute social defeat in adolescence drives long lasting aggression by recruiting MeApv neurons. Putting the findings together, MeApv emerges as a convergence point for both direct experience and observational routes to aggression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-for-tracking-aggression">Tools for tracking aggression</h2>



<p>Terms like chemogenetics and optogenetics describe ways to control defined neurons. Chemogenetics uses engineered receptors that respond to a designer drug to turn cells down or up for minutes to hours.</p>



<p>Optogenetics uses light sensitive ion channels to switch activity with millisecond timing. In this study, chemogenetics handled inhibition and activation during the viewing window, while photometry tracked the activity patterns that predicted later <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gorillas-adjust-their-aggression-based-on-risk-and-reward/">behavior</a>.</p>



<p>These tools let scientists pose causal questions about circuit nodes. If turning down a node prevents the learned behavior, and turning it up installs the behavior when it would not otherwise appear, that node likely sits on a necessary pathway.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-limitations-and-next-steps">Study limitations and next steps</h2>



<p>The work uses mice, so direct translation to people needs care. Sex differences showed up clearly here, and the effect depended on social familiarity, which may play out differently in human groups.</p>



<p>Time scales also matter. The observation lasted 10 minutes and the test came 30 minutes later, so the results speak to short term acquisition expressed soon after witnessing.</p>



<p>Future studies can ask how long the familiarity gated effect lasts and whether repeated observing builds stronger, longer lived priming. Experts can also examine whether adolescence, stress history, or social rank change how the MeApv encodes familiar aggression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-matters-for-everyday-life">Why this matters for everyday life</h2>



<p>Social environments can nudge biology in ways that push behavior. The results suggest that who you watch may matter as much as what you watch when it comes to aggressive scripts.</p>



<p>Public health and education strategies often target exposure volume. Adding social identity and relationship context to that conversation could make prevention efforts more precise.</p>



<p>Circuit level insights can also guide ideas for intervention. If a specific node reads social familiarity and primes later attack, targeted behavioral training or neuromodulation approaches could aim to disrupt that readout before it turns into action.</p>

<p>Now, deepfake detection has entered a new era with an innovative breakthrough by scientists at <a href="https://www.klick.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Klick Labs</a>. The team has developed an unprecedented approach for combating the increasingly sophisticated world of audio deepfakes. </p>



<p>Utilizing artificial intelligence, this method captures the subtle nuances that distinguish genuine human speech from artificial imitations. It presents a promising solution to challenges highlighted by recent incidents, such as the fake Joe Biden robocall and the counterfeit Taylor Swift cookware advertisement on Meta. </p>



<p>Consequently, this advancement arrives at a critical moment, with increasingly indistinguishable artificial voices becoming more common.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tapping-into-humanity-s-vocal-signatures">Tapping into humanity's vocal signatures</h2>



<p>The inspiration for this novel detection method has a dual origin. Initially, it stems from Klick Labs' prior research on employing vocal biomarkers to improve health outcomes. Moreover, it is fueled by a fascination with the portrayal of artificial intelligence in science fiction movies, like "Blade Runner."</p>



<p>Subsequently, researchers honed in on the "signs of life" in human speech, such as breathing patterns and micro-pauses. They crafted a technique that leverages these vocal biomarkers for accurate deepfake detection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-a-new-detection-paradigm">Unveiling a new detection paradigm</h2>



<p>Yan Fossat, Senior Vice President of Klick Labs and the study's principal investigator, emphasized the effectiveness of this approach. </p>



<p>"Our findings highlight the potential to use vocal biomarkers as a novel approach to flagging deepfakes because they lack the telltale signs of life inherent in authentic content," explained Fossat. "These signs are usually undetectable to the human ear but are now discernible thanks to machine learning and vocal biomarkers."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-study-of-sounds">A study of sounds</h2>



<p>The open-access journal JMIR Biomedical Engineering recently published the study titled "Investigation of Deepfake Voice Detection using Speech Pause Patterns: Algorithm Development and Validation." The study demonstrates how vocal biomarkers, combined with machine learning, can distinguish between deepfakes and authentic audio with reliable precision. </p>



<p>The research involved 49 participants with diverse backgrounds and accents. Deepfake models were trained on their voice samples to create corresponding artificial audio samples. Through analyzing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/computer-models-can-mimic-human-language-processing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">speech</a> pause metrics, the team was able to differentiate real from fake voices with approximately 80 percent accuracy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-deepfake-detection">The future of deepfake detection</h2>



<p>This development is especially pertinent in light of recent voice cloning scams and the Federal Communications Commission's decision to outlaw deepfake voices in robocalls. Furthermore, with Meta's initiative to label AI-generated content and the looming threat of deepfakes influencing the upcoming U.S. presidential election, the need for effective detection methods is more pressing than ever.</p>



<p>Fossat acknowledged the constant evolution of deepfake technology and the ongoing challenge it presents. "While our study offers a promising solution to this growing problem, we recognize the need to continuously advance our detection technology to keep pace with the increasing realism of deepfakes," he said.</p>



<p>Klick Labs' pioneering work highlights the potential of AI and vocal biomarkers in safeguarding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/functioning-quantum-internet-makes-giant-stride-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">digital communication</a> authenticity. It also underscores the necessity of innovation amidst evolving digital threats. As deepfakes become more realistic, advancing detection methods is crucial to maintain our digital integrity.</p>



<p>Ultimately, deepfake detection is a multifaceted challenge. It's a critical field of research as the implications of undetected deepfakes can be significant, affecting everything from personal reputations to the integrity of democratic processes.</p>

<p>When scientists and policymakers decide on which regions to prioritize for conservation, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/">biodiversity</a> is frequently their top consideration. The rationale is clear: ecosystems with higher biodiversity tend to support a broader range of species and offer a wider spectrum of ecosystem services, making them prime candidates for conservation.</p>



<p>However, the task of quantifying biodiversity is fraught with challenges. Various metrics offer different lenses through which the intricate interactions of life within ecosystems, such as forests, can be viewed, sometimes leading to conflicting interpretations of biodiversity's significance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-forest-productivity">Measuring forest productivity </h2>



<p>A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Museum of Natural History</a> has shed light on this issue through a detailed analysis of two decades' worth of data. This comprehensive review suggests that the most straightforward biodiversity metric - simply counting the total number of species within a specific area - provides the most accurate reflection of a forest's productivity.</p>



<p>"Ecosystem services provided by forests - including wildlife habitat, wood, fiber, and carbon storage - depend on forest productivity, the collective biomass growth of individual trees. Forest productivity is thought to increase with tree biodiversity, but there are many ways to quantify biodiversity, with little consensus on which measures are most important," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"Despite experimental and observational studies demonstrating that biodiversity enhances primary productivity, the best metric for predicting productivity at broad geographic extents - functional trait diversity, phylogenetic diversity, or species richness - remains unknown."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-metrics-and-forest-productivity-nbsp">Biodiversity metrics and forest productivity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“There aren’t many studies that look at the differences between measurements of diversity,” said lead author Yunpeng Liu, a postdoctoral associate at the Florida Museum. With access to an extensive database maintained by the <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/">U.S. Forest Service</a>,&nbsp;</p>



<p>Liu and his team set out to explore how different biodiversity metrics correlate with the productivity of forests across the eastern United States, drawing on nearly two million tree measurements from 23,145 forest plots collected between 2000 and 2020.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forests-with-diverse-species-interactions-nbsp">Forests with diverse species interactions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings revealed a consistent trend: forests with a higher number of tree species, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/environmental-changes-put-a-cap-on-species-richness/">species richness</a>, demonstrated greater productivity. This aligns with the understanding that diverse species interactions within an ecosystem bolster essential services such as carbon sequestration and provide renewable resources like wood.</p>



<p>Contrary to initial expectations, the study found that measures of phylogenetic diversity (which tracks the evolutionary relationships among species) and functional diversity (which looks at the variety of structural and biological traits) were negatively correlated with productivity. This unexpected discovery complicates the narrative on how different dimensions of biodiversity influence ecosystem functionality.</p>



<p>However, as co-author Douglas Soltis (a distinguished professor with the Florida Museum of Natural History) argues: “These aren’t mutually exclusive measurements. They’re all ways that we might be able to make better conservation decisions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecosystem-resilience-and-productivity-nbsp">Ecosystem resilience and productivity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study also ventured into the implications of these findings for ecosystem resilience and productivity. Co-author Robert Guralnick, curator of biodiversity informatics at the Florida Museum, admitted the uncertainties that still linger, highlighting the ongoing need for research into the dynamics of tree interactions and the traits that enable diverse forests to flourish.</p>



<p>Unfortunately, there is not enough information about various specific traits, such as the shape and depth of roots, to make accurate assessments. “It may also be that there are aspects of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-species-diversity-shaped-by-climate-change-for-21000-years/">trees</a> of the same or different species structure their interactions with each other, especially as tree communities become more diverse, that we don't yet understand,” Guralnick added.</p>

<p>By illuminating the multifaceted role of biodiversity in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-face-threats-from-multiple-industries/">forest health</a> and productivity, the study provides valuable insights for conservation practices. It particularly highlights the significance of species richness as a straightforward and reliable indicator for evaluating ecosystem health.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s reassuring for other investigators and policymakers to know that species richness is reliable. This is especially important when making conservation decisions with short notice and limited data,” Soltis concluded.</p>

<p>A new study led by the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto Mississauga</a> has examined how climate change might fundamentally alter the animal species populating North American cities. </p>



<p>Shedding new light on the potential future shifts in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-greening-projects-can-dramatically-boost-urban-biodiversity/">urban biodiversity</a>, this research has major implications for the animals that city residents may encounter by the year 2100.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-landscape-of-us-and-canadian-cities">Biodiversity landscape of US and Canadian cities</h2>



<p>Urban areas, teeming with life, offer residents the opportunity to connect with local biodiversity, ranging from birds in backyards to animals represented as local sports team mascots.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the experts warn that the biodiversity landscape of US and Canadian cities could undergo significant changes due to human-induced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/">climate change</a>, affecting over 2,000 animal species that have historically inhabited the 60 most populous cities in North America.</p>



<p>"Just like the California grizzly bear is extinct from where it is displayed prominently on the state flag, with climate change, the floodgates are open and many other emblematic species are at risk of extirpation from the communities they represent," noted the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-causes-widespread-biodiversity-shifts">Climate change causes widespread biodiversity shifts</h2>



<p>"Human experiences with nature are important for our culture, economy, and health. Anthropogenically-driven climate change is causing widespread shifts in biodiversity and resident urban wildlife are no exception," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"We modeled over 2,000 animal species to predict how climate change will impact terrestrial wildlife within 60 Canadian and American cities. We found evidence of an impending great urban shift where thousands of species will disappear across the selected cities, being replaced by new species, or not replaced at all."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Effects were largely species-specific, with the most negatively impacted taxa being amphibians, canines, and loons. These predicted shifts were consistent across scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions, but our results show that the severity of change will be defined by our action or inaction to mitigate climate change."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-favorable-conditions-for-animal-species">Favorable conditions for animal species</h2>



<p>The study leveraged data from online species distribution databases, primarily collected through citizen science initiatives, to compile records of terrestrial animal sightings across these cities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite acknowledging potential inaccuracies in citizen-sourced data, the team employed machine learning techniques to forecast the most favorable conditions for each species under three different emissions scenarios by the end of the century.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-substantial-turnover-in-urban-biodiversity">Substantial turnover in urban biodiversity</h2>



<p>The findings project a substantial turnover in urban biodiversity by 2100, affecting nearly all cities studied. Particularly, cities with a rich history of species diversity are expected to see significant declines, with minimal gains in new species.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooler-cities-will-gain-more-animal-species">Cooler cities will gain more animal species</h3>



<p>Geographical analysis predicts that cooler, wetter cities such as Omaha and Kansas City might welcome a surge of new species, with cities like Quebec, Ottawa, and Winnipeg potentially nearly doubling their current species count.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warmer-cities-will-lose-more-animal-species-nbsp">Warmer cities will lose more animal species&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Conversely, warmer cities with high precipitation levels, like those in coastal California, may witness the largest exodus of species. Arid regions, exemplified by Phoenix and Albuquerque, might see less dramatic shifts, attributed to their ecosystems' inherent resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-most-bird-and-insect-species-will-shift-to-new-urban-areas">Most bird and insect species will shift to new urban areas</h2>



<p>Alarmingly, up to fifty-four species could disappear from the analyzed cities. A taxonomic breakdown reveals that over 95% of bird and insect species could see changes in their urban distribution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Canines, most amphibians, and loons are among those anticipated to suffer the most significant losses, whereas turtles, mice, toads, and pelicans might become increasingly prevalent.</p>

<p>According to the researchers, residents who spend their lives in the same city will likely witness noticeable shifts in the local species composition.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the study's predictions are based on models and necessitate further ecological validation, it emphasizes the crucial role of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in preserving urban biodiversity.</p>



<p>“For people living in cities, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/city-life-plant-animal-evolution/">animals</a> in their backyards and local green spaces are going to change significantly with climate change. Over the next few decades, familiar species will be leaving the city and new species will be entering it, forever changing the composition of urban animals,” the authors concluded.</p>

<p>A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> (PIK) has found that healthy dietary shifts could play a significant role in supporting the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change. </p>



<p>According to co-lead author Florian Humpenöder, a senior scientist at PIK, transitioning towards a more sustainable diet could substantially increase the feasibility of meeting the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greenhouse-gas-emissions-and-dietary-shifts">Greenhouse gas emissions and dietary shifts</h2>



<p>"The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to dietary shifts, especially methane from ruminant animals raised for their meat and milk, would allow us to extend our current global CO2 budget of 500 gigatons by 125 gigatons and still stay within the limits of 1.5°C with a 50 percent chance," he explained.</p>



<p>The study underscores the importance of implementing policies that put a price on greenhouse gas emissions across the energy and land systems as a crucial measure to limit global warming to 1.5°C.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-diets-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions">Sustainable diets reduce greenhouse gas emissions</h2>



<p>“Our results show that compared to continued dietary trends, a more sustainable diet not only reduces impacts from food production within the land system, such as deforestation and nitrogen losses. It also reduces GHG <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-dietary-changes-could-offset-carbon-emissions/">emissions</a> from the land system to such an extent that it cuts economy-wide 1.5°C-compatible GHG prices in 2050 by 43 percent,” said study co-lead author Alexander Popp, leader of the working group land-use management at PIK.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Moreover, healthy diets would also reduce our dependence on carbon dioxide removal in 2050 by 39 percent."</p>



<p>The study represents a pioneering effort to isolate the contribution of dietary changes alone to achieving the 1.5°C target, an area previously unexplored in existing research.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dietary-shifts-and-climate-goals">Dietary shifts and climate goals</h2>



<p>By incorporating dietary shifts towards the <a href="https://eatforum.org/eat-lancet-commission/the-planetary-health-diet-and-you/">EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet</a> into their models, the scientists highlight the potential of a flexitarian diet, which emphasizes a variety of plant-based foods, reduced consumption of livestock products, and limited intake of added sugars, to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable and healthy global diet.</p>



<p>However, there are considerable challenges that lie ahead in implementing these dietary changes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerted-efforts-are-needed">Concerted efforts are needed</h2>



<p>Effective decision-making in food policy is often complicated by the dispersion of responsibilities across various institutions, making it difficult to enforce coherent policies that promote healthy diets. Furthermore, ensuring social inclusion and providing adequate compensation are crucial for a just transition.</p>



<p>"The results indicate that a shift in our diets could make a considerable difference if we do not want to crash through the 1.5°C limit in the next 10 to 15 years. This calls for globally concerted efforts to support the transition towards <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-friendly-foods-can-reduce-your-risk-of-mortality-by-25-percent/">sustainable healthy diets</a>,” concluded co-author Johan Rockström, the director of PIK.</p>

But what if there's a way to slow down this decline? This is where the compelling study from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (<a href="https://sutd.edu.sg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SUTD</a>) on <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/babies-in-bilingual-homes-have-cognitive-advantages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bilingual</a> brain becomes relevant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-reserves">Cognitive reserves</h2>



<p>Cognitive reserve provides an alternative perspective on brain function, emphasizing the brain's capacity to form various pathways and implement backup systems to maintain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bilingual-babies-cognitive-advantages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive</a> health. </p>



<p>This concept suggests that some individuals possess a more extensive network of these pathways, enabling them to manage cognitive challenges more effectively.</p>



<p>Professor Yow Wei Quin from SUTD noted, "These reserves highlight the brain’s flexibility and resilience. An individual with greater reserves is likely to maintain good cognitive function in aging.”</p>



<p>Here's the surprise -- bilingualism might be a major key. Imagine the workout your brain gets switching between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-storage-learn-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">languages</a>. </p>



<p>Previous studies have shown that bilinguals tend to have better mental flexibility, focus, and memory -- vital skills for understanding others' thoughts and emotions (known as "theory of mind").</p>

<p>But here's the burning question: could these social benefits protect the aging <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bilingual-children-have-lasting-cognitive-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a>? That's what Prof. Yow and Dr. Li Xiaoqian from SUTD set out to explore. </p>



<p>The team suspected that learning a second <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/language-impact-perception-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language</a> early in life could reshape our brains to create those precious cognitive reserves.</p>



<p>"There is evidence that learning and using a second language results in structural and functional changes in the bilingual brain," explained Dr. Li. It's a little like building an extra wing on your mental mansion!</p>

Specifically, the research pointed out significant increases in brain volume in key areas responsible for a set of crucial functions.</p>



<p>First, there's the area related to understanding mental states. This is where our capacity to infer what others are thinking and feeling resides. </p>



<p>It's a fundamental aspect of human interaction, allowing us to empathize and connect with people on a deeper level. </p>



<p>The study found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bilingual-children-learn-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early bilinguals</a> have greater volume in this part of the brain, suggesting they might be better equipped at navigating social landscapes.</p>

<p>Cognitive control is another area where early bilinguals shine. This function is essential for focusing attention, especially in environments filled with distractions. </p>



<p>It's about being able to maintain concentration on a task at hand, disregarding irrelevant information. The study reveals that early bilingualism contributes to greater brain volume in regions associated with cognitive control.</p>

<p>What's particularly striking is that the earlier a person learns a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/speaking-multiple-languages-slows-down-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">second language</a>, the more pronounced these brain benefits appear to be. </p>



<p>This insight is groundbreaking because it suggests that the timing of bilingual education can influence the degree to which it fortifies the brain against age-related decline. </p>



<p>Essentially, the study posits that early bilingualism doesn't just teach a child <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/best-ages-learn-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">another language</a> -- it builds a more resilient brain.</p>



<p>But the magic didn't stop there. The earlier a person learned that second language, the more benefits their brains seemed to reap. <p>This revelation suggests that the preservation strategies for historical sites, which have favored in situ conservation for decades, may need reassessment due to the risk of contamination compromising the integrity of archaeological remains.</p>



<p>David Jennings, the Chief Executive of York Archaeology, reflected on the novelty of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/contamination-crisis-microplastics-found-in-88-of-protein-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microplastics</a> as a contemporary issue, citing their recent identification despite being a product of the post-war boom in plastic production. </p>



<p>He noted, "This new study shows that the particles have infiltrated archaeological deposits," drawing a parallel to the gradual recognition of microplastics in oceans since the 1960s.</p>

<p>Scientists have finally figured out how, and their discoveries could revolutionize the way we think about emergency blood clotting treatments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hemolymph-caterpillar-blood">Hemolymph: Caterpillar blood</h2>



<p>Humans have blood. Insects sport a similar fluid known as hemolymph. Both are essential, circulating nutrients and crucial substances throughout the body. Yet, this is where their common ground largely ends. </p>



<p>Our blood boasts a rich composition, teeming with red blood cells and platelets. These components are vital for clotting, a natural defense against bleeding out from injuries.</p>



<p>On the flip side, insects navigate through life with a distinct setup. Their hemolymph lacks the red blood cells and platelets found in humans. Instead, it contains hemocytes. These cells are the insects' multitaskers. They play a pivotal role in the immune system, combating infections and ensuring the insect remains healthy.</p>



<p>But their abilities stretch beyond defense against microbes. Hemocytes have another, equally crucial function. They're key players in repairing damage. When an insect gets hurt, hemocytes spring into action. They converge at the injury site, working together to form a patch. This process is fast and efficient, sealing the wound and preventing further harm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-caterpillars-stop-the-bleeding">How caterpillars stop the bleeding</h2>



<p>"These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/caterpillars-defense-sticky-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">caterpillars</a>, called tobacco hornworms, can seal the wounds in a minute," said Dr. Konstantin Kornev, a professor specializing in materials science at Clemson University. So, how do they do it?</p>



<p>Here's the step-by-step:</p>



<p>Insect hemolymph is typically watery. Yet, once it exits the body, an extraordinary transformation occurs. It morphs into a viscoelastic material. Imagine it becoming slimy and stretchable. “A good example of a viscoelastic fluid is saliva,” said Dr. Kornev. </p>



<p>“When you smear a drop between your fingers, it behaves like water: materials scientists will say it is purely viscous. But thanks to very large molecules called mucins in it, saliva forms a bridge when you move your fingers apart. Therefore, it’s properly called viscoelastic: viscous when you shear it and elastic when you stretch it.”</p>



<p>Then, the hemocytes spring into action. They converge on the injury, clustering to form a barrier atop the now gooey hemolymph. As time passes, this barrier crystallizes into a crust, effectively sealing the cut. This process is vital for an insect's survival, preventing excessive loss of hemolymph and warding off infections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-of-caterpillar-blood">Benefits of caterpillar blood</h2>



<p>“Turning hemolymph into a viscoelastic fluid appears to help <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/monarch-caterpillars-become-very-aggressive-when-food-is-limited/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">caterpillars</a> and cockroaches to stop any bleeding, by retracting dripping droplets back to the wound in a few seconds,” explained Dr. Kornev. </p>



<p>“We conclude that their hemolymph has an extraordinary ability to instantaneously change its material properties. Unlike silk-producing insects and spiders, which have a special organ for making fibers, these insects can make hemolymph filaments at any location upon wounding.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-should-we-pay-attention-to-caterpillar-bleeding">Why should we pay attention to caterpillar bleeding?</h2>



<p>"Our discoveries open the door for designing fast-working thickeners of human blood," explained Dr. Kornev. "We needn't necessarily copy the exact biochemistry, but should focus on designing drugs that could turn blood into a viscoelastic material that stops bleeding."</p>



<p>Imagine paramedics having access to a medicine that could temporarily thicken blood at the site of an injury. This could buy precious time for someone seriously hurt or even increase survival rates during complex surgeries. </p>



<p>Beyond emergency care, the study of caterpillar blood clotting mechanisms offers exciting possibilities for various medical fields. Here are a few applications:</p>

<p>A new study led by Professor Bryan Fry at the <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Queensland</a> offers interesting insights into how lizards have adapted to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-blue-tongue-lizard-evolved-resistance-to-deadly-snake-venom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survive</a> snake venom attacks.</p>



<p>Lizards and snakes have been locked in a remarkable evolutionary battle for millennia. Venomous snakes wield a powerful weapon, but their reptilian cousins have developed fascinating ways to stay alive.</p>

<p>“Australian snakes have developed potent venoms to counteract the lizards’ defenses, highlighting an intense predator-prey dynamic," said PhD candidate Uthpala Chandrasekara. "Once the lizards evolve, the snakes fire back with even more potent toxins. It's a biological arms race where the only constant is change."</p>

<p>"Evolution has equipped these giant lizards with the ability to combat venoms, but not all shield themselves in the same way," says Professor Fry. That's where it gets really interesting.</p>

<p>The traditional view of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-build-higher-nests-when-there-are-no-visible-landmarks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ant colonies</a> has always painted a clear division of labor: the queen, as the reproductive engine, solely dedicates herself to egg-laying, while the worker ants buzz around performing all the other necessary tasks to maintain and expand the colony. </p>



<p>This almost industrial efficiency, with roles seemingly assigned at the genetic level in some species, underscores the perceived rigidity of social insect societies. But what if this understanding is more of a generalization than a universal truth?</p>



<p>Dr. Romain Libbrecht and his research team from <a href="https://international.univ-tours.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tours</a> have thrown a wrench into this neatly sorted mechanism. Their research suggests that the roles within ant colonies, particularly that of the queen, may not be as fixed as once thought. </p>



<p>Through their detailed observations and experiments, they have shown that the queen's behavior and role can significantly change depending on the social environment of the colony.</p>

<p>The scientists studied the common black garden <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-have-a-communications-system-that-closely-resembles-mental-telepathy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ant</a> (Lasius niger). Here's the wild part: When a new queen starts a colony, she's a Jill-of-all-trades. She takes care of the brood herself at first, ensuring those first precious workers hatch. </p>



<p>But, once those workers arrive on the scene? She transforms. Suddenly, egg-laying becomes her sole focus, and the workers take over everything else.</p>



<p>If you take an established, egg-laying queen <em>away</em> from her workers, she switches back to all-purpose mode.</p>



<p>"With regard to the ant species we studied, it is social factors that control whether queens become specialized or not. Our findings challenge the widely accepted notion of social insect queens as inherently specialized egg-laying machines," Dr. Libbrecht said.</p>

<p>Fans of Jurassic Park might remember the iconic scene where Dr. Alan Grant and the kids encounter a sick Triceratops -- a gentle, social giant of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jurassic-rocks-reveal-new-details-about-earths-climate-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric world</a>. </p>



<p>These herbivorous dinosaurs, with their massive three-horned heads and protective frills, have long captured our imaginations. </p>



<p>But did these impressive creatures roam the earth alone, or did Triceratops have a complex social structure, as Spielberg seemed to suggest?</p>



<p>New research from the <a href="https://www.naturalis.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Naturalis Biodiversity Center</a> in the Netherlands provides tantalizing clues that these titans of the Cretaceous period might have been more than solitary wanderers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-behaviour-from-triceratops-fossils">Social behaviour from Triceratops fossils</h2>



<p>The discovery begins with a team of paleontologists led by Jimmy de Rooij. Back in 2013, the team ventured to Wyoming with hopes of unearthing a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-dinosaur-species-tyrannosaurus-mcraeensis-discovered-in-new-mexico/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tyrannosaurus</a>. Instead, they hit the paleontological jackpot -- stumbling across a treasure trove of Triceratops fossils.</p>



<p>What began as a routine expedition transformed into a decade-long project. Over 1200 bones and fragments emerged from the dig site, meticulously removed and analyzed. </p>



<p>This wasn't just about finding cool fossils -- it was about reconstructing the lives (and deaths) of these magnificent creatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-triceratops-characteristics">Triceratops characteristics </h2>



<p>The key discoveries that led de Rooij and his team to this herd hypothesis includes:</p>

<p>"The material is of very good quality. This enabled us to show that these triceratops grew really slowly, for instance," noted de Rooij. </p>



<p>Similar to tree rings, the growth patterns trapped in the fossilized bones reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/triceratops-horns-attract-mates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Triceratops</a> likely didn't reach full size for many years. </p>



<p>This extended growing period hints at social structures where adults potentially cared for and protected younger members.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-swamp-of-doom">The swamp of doom</h3>



<p>The fossils were clustered within a thin layer of rock with no other species present. It's possible that these unlucky Triceratops became bogged down in a swamp -- a tragic but revealing mass death that preserved their remains together.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teeth-and-tales-of-travel">Teeth and tales of travel</h3>



<p>"Research into the physical and chemical properties of the hundreds of triceratops teeth tells of a migratory existence - one that was the same for all five of the dinos," de Rooij explained. </p>



<p>Like tiny time capsules, the chemical makeup of their teeth suggests that the entire group roamed together, seeking out food or perhaps seasonally moving to better grounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-behavior-of-triceratops">Social behavior of Triceratops</h2>



<p>While not conclusive proof, the evidence strongly suggests that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-triceratops-relative-two-feet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Triceratops</a> formed groups for various reasons. Maybe strength in numbers provided protection from predators. </p>



<p>Perhaps they banded together for long migrations, relying on collective knowledge of routes and resources. Some experts even speculate that there might have been complex social structures within the herd.</p>



<p>"And that of course leads to all kinds of new questions. How complex was this social behavior, exactly?" de Rooij wondered. It's an exciting new chapter in our understanding of dinosaur behavior. </p>



<p>Did they share parenting duties? Engage in play-fighting like young elephants? Did they have leaders to guide them? The possibilities are thrilling and inspire a whole new range of research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-landmark-discovery">A landmark discovery</h2>



<p>The impact of this research is undeniable. Prof. Anne Schulp, de Rooij's supervisor, declares: "Naturalis, the national natural history museum of the Netherlands, now has the biggest triceratops find in the world, and <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> has the first Dr Triceratops in the Netherlands."</p>



<p>But the story doesn't end in the lab. This October, the Naturalis Museum will unveil an exhibition showcasing the Triceratops herd in all its glory. </p>



<p>The exhibit aims to recreate their lives and ill-fated end, giving visitors a glimpse into the social world of these ancient giants before they embark on a world tour.</p>

<p>Its most striking features were its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/big-john-had-a-skull-injury-from-fighting-another-triceratops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">large skull</a>, adorned with two impressive horns above the eyes and a smaller one on the nose, and its massive neck frill.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-discovery">First discovery</h3>



<p>First discovered in the late 19th century, Triceratops quickly became a subject of intrigue and study. Paleontologists have unearthed numerous fossils, primarily in North America, where this dinosaur once thrived. Over the years, these discoveries have shed light on the life and habits of Triceratops.</p>



<p>Interestingly, Triceratops was a herbivore. It used its beaked mouth to clip off leaves and plants. Its teeth, arranged in groups called batteries, were perfectly adapted for shredding tough plant material. </p>



<p>Scientists believe this diet played a crucial role in its large size, with some adults reaching over 9 meters in length and weighing up to 12 tons.</p>

<p>A team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a> has uncovered a fascinating aspect of bird communication. The study reveals that the Japanese <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-tits-are-nesting-earlier-due-to-climate-change/">tit</a> (<em>Parus minor</em>) utilizes wing gestures to communicate a polite "after you" to its mate.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This discovery challenges the prevailing assumption that complex gestural communication, akin to the symbolic gestures observed in humans and great apes, was beyond the capacity of birds. </p>



<p>The findings mark a significant advancement in our understanding of non-verbal communication mechanisms in the animal kingdom, particularly among birds.</p>

<p>Further studies extended this understanding to other animals, including ravens and fish, which exhibited simple gestural behaviors like pointing to indicate objects or interests.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-symbolic-gesturing-in-a-non-human-species-nbsp">Symbolic gesturing in a non-human species&nbsp;</h2>



<p>However, the concept of symbolic gesturing, which implies a higher level of cognitive processing - such as a human showing an open hand to signal "after you" - had not been definitively observed in non-human species until now.</p>



<p>“In our latest discovery, we revealed that the Japanese tit uses gestures to communicate with their mate,” said study lead author Toshitaka Suzuki, an assistant professor of animal communication at the University of Tokyo.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For over 17 years, I have been engaged in the study of these fascinating birds. They not only use specific calls to convey particular meanings, but also combine different calls into phrases using syntactic rules. These diverse vocalizations led me to initiate this research into their potential use of physical gestures.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-form-of-gestural-communication">Unique form of gestural communication</h2>



<p>Observations conducted during the breeding season provided valuable insights into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-is-not-the-only-thing-changing-the-behavior-of-birds/">behavior</a> of Japanese tits. These birds, which form mating pairs and construct their nests within tree cavities, displayed a unique form of gestural communication.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers focused on 16 parent birds across eight pairs, closely monitoring their interactions during nest visits. Notably, when arriving at the nest with food, the birds would often perch nearby, and one would flutter its wings toward the other, signaling for its mate to enter the nest first.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This wing-fluttering gesture, primarily exhibited by females, effectively determined the order of nest entry, mirroring the human ‘after you’ gesture.</p>

<p>“We were surprised to find that the results were much clearer than we had expected. We observed that Japanese tits flutter their wings exclusively in the presence of their mate, and upon witnessing this behavior, the mate almost always entered the nest box first,” Suzuki said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers concluded that this behavior satisfies the criteria for a symbolic gesture, as it is aimed at the mate rather than the nest box, distinguishing it from deictic gestures that indicate the location of an object of interest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-evolution-of-gestures">Understanding the evolution of gestures</h2>



<p>Suzuki also touched on the broader implications of their findings for understanding the evolution of gestures, drawing parallels between the freed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-wing-shape-is-driven-by-environment-and-behavior/">wings</a> of perching birds and the mobility of human hands due to upright posture and bipedalism.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"There is a hypothesis that walking on two legs allowed humans to maintain an upright posture, freeing up their hands for greater mobility, which in turn contributed to the evolution of gestures. Similarly, when birds perch on branches, their wings become free, which we think may facilitate the development of gestural communication," he explained.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
