<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>

<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>

Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>

<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>In a massive analysis involving data from over 3,600 studies, the researchers examined the weight trends of 222 million people across 200 countries over a 32 year period, from 1990 to 2022.&nbsp;</p>

But, the bad news is that some regions, particularly in South Asia and Africa, still have a lot of underweight people.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This shows that undernourishment remains a challenge in these areas. Food insecurity, limited access to healthy food, and economic limitations that make it hard to buy or find good food are all problems these regions face.</p>

<p>Scientists have made a significant discovery regarding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-vaccines-linked-to-neurological-blood-and-heart-related-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19 vaccination</a> and its impact on menstrual cycles. Conducted by a research team from Oregon Health &amp; Science University (<a href="https://www.ohsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OHSU</a>), the study exposes how the timing of vaccination can lead to slight, albeit temporary, changes in the length of menstrual cycles. </p>

<p>"Understanding these changes on a population level allows us to more effectively counsel patients about what to expect with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/premature-births-linked-to-covid-19-were-halted-by-vaccines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19 vaccine</a>," she stated. <p>“Menstruation is a key indicator of fertility and overall health, so understanding these changes is very important to us as reproductive health researchers and to our patients," she concluded.</p>

<p>"“When we looked at the men taking finasteride in the survey, their cholesterol levels averaged 30 points lower than men not taking the drug. I thought we’d see the opposite pattern, so it was very interesting," he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-navigating-the-limitations-in-finasteride-research">Navigating the limitations in finasteride research</h2>



<p>The study, however, faced limitations due to its observational nature and the small sample size of men over 50 who reported using finasteride. </p>

<p>“This was not a clinical study in which you can control everything perfectly,” Amengual said. “It was more of an observation that led us to say, ‘Okay, now we've seen this in people. Let's see what happens in mice.’”</p>



<p>Amengual's curiosity about finasteride stemmed from its mechanism of action -- blocking a protein that activates testosterone, a hormone suspected to play a role in atherosclerosis. </p>

<p>“I was reading about this medication one day, and I started to notice that there were not many long-term studies of the implications of the drug. Initially, it was just my own curiosity, based on the fact that hormone levels are known to have an effect on atherosclerosis, hair loss, and prostate issues,” Amengual said. “So, we decided to dig into it.”</p>



<p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/donald-molina-ba3099197/?locale=es_ES" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Donald Molina Chaves</a>, a doctoral student working with Amengual, conducted experiments on mice predisposed to atherosclerosis. The mice were fed varying doses of finasteride alongside a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet. </p>



<p>“Mice that were given a high dose of finasteride showed lower cholesterol levels within the plasma as well as in the arteries,” Molina Chaves said. “There were also fewer lipids and inflammatory markers in the liver.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The highest dose tested showed significant decreases in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-salmon-can-help-lower-your-cholesterol/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cholesterol levels</a> and inflammatory markers in the liver, though Amengual notes such a dose would be impractical for human use.</p>



<p>“It's an incredibly high level of the drug. But we use mice as a model, and they are extremely resistant to things that would kill any of us,” he said. “So it is not that wild when you think about it that way.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-transgender-health">Implications for transgender health</h2>

In both cases, the hormonal changes can trigger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-gray-hair-will-soon-be-a-thing-of-the-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hair loss</a>,” he said. </p>



<p>“The interesting thing is that transgender people are also at a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. So this drug could have a potential beneficial effect to prevent cardiovascular disease not only in cis men, but also in transgender individuals.”</p>



<p>This research opens the door to further studies, including potential clinical trials to verify finasteride's cholesterol-lowering effects. </p>

<p>To quantify the pace of aging, the team utilized the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8853656/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DunedinPACE</a> epigenetic clock, a cutting-edge tool developed by Columbia researchers and their colleagues. </p>



<p>This algorithm measures biological aging through DNA methylation marks in white blood cells, offering a "speedometer" for how swiftly or slowly a person is aging. </p>



<p>According to their findings, an additional two years of education can slow the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-tea-delays-biological-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pace of aging</a> by two to three percent, equating to about a 10 percent reduction in mortality risk and longer lifespan.</p>



<p>The study meticulously analyzed data from 14,106 participants across three generations of the Framingham Heart Study. </p>



<p>By comparing educational attainment and biological aging data, including a subset of 3,101 participants for whom detailed educational mobility and aging metrics were available, the researchers uncovered compelling evidence of education's protective effects against rapid aging and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extended-human-lifespans-could-be-catastrophic-for-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">premature death</a>.</p>

<p>A particularly innovative aspect of this research was its method to control for familial socio-economic differences that could skew results. </p>



<p>Gloria Graf, a PhD candidate in the Department of Epidemiology and the study's first author, explained the importance of focusing on educational mobility and sibling comparisons to isolate education's true effects. </p>



<p>“A key confound in studies like these is that people with different levels of education tend to come from families with different educational backgrounds and different levels of other resources,” explained Graf.  </p>



<p>“To address these confounds, we focused on educational mobility, how much more (or less) education a person completed relative to their parents, and sibling differences in educational attainment -- how much more (or less) education a person completed relative to their siblings. These study designs control for differences between families and allow us to isolate the effects of education.” </p>

<p>“We found that upward educational mobility was associated both with a slower pace of aging and decreased risk of death,” said Graf. “In fact, up to half of the educational gradient in mortality we observed was explained by healthier aging trajectories among better-educated participants.”</p>

<p>In the realm of science fiction, the concept of reconnecting with loved ones posthumously through technology, digital resurrection, has long intrigued audiences.</p>



<p>This notion, once a mere fabric of imaginative storytelling as seen in a 2014 episode of "<a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/70264888" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Black Mirror</a>," is rapidly evolving into a reality.</p>



<p>The episode depicted a young widow finding solace in an app that replicated her late husband's online presence. It seemed far-fetched, yet this fiction is inching closer to fact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-digital-resurrection">Evolution of digital resurrection</h2>



<p>In 2017, the company <a href="https://eternime.breezy.hr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eternime</a> proposed an audacious idea -- creating avatars of deceased individuals using their digital history. </p>



<p>Termed as “Skype for the dead,” this concept, though revolutionary, didn't gain traction. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simulation-hypothesis-are-we-living-in-a-computer-simulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">technological landscape</a>, particularly machine-learning and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-predict-human-life-events-including-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI algorithms</a>, wasn't ready. Perhaps, more importantly, neither were we.</p>



<p>Fast forward to 2024, and the landscape has drastically changed. With the widespread use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machines-and-consciousness-are-ai-systems-really-awake/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chat GPT</a>-like programs, the prospect of digitally resurrecting loved ones is no longer a distant possibility but a looming reality. </p>



<p>This raises critical questions: Should digital resurrection be permitted, and are we equipped to handle the ensuing legal and ethical dilemmas?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insight-through-research">Insight through research</h2>



<p>Dr. Masaki Iwasaki, a <a href="https://hls.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard Law School</a> alumnus and assistant professor at <a href="https://en.snu.ac.kr/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seoul National University</a>, delves into these questions in his recent study. </p>



<p>The research presents US adults with hypothetical scenarios: a woman in her 20s dies in a car accident, and a company offers to digitally resurrect her, albeit with ambiguous consent. </p>



<p>Participants were asked to rate the social acceptability of this resurrection, considering factors like ethics and privacy.</p>



<p>The findings are telling. When the deceased explicitly consented to digital resurrection, acceptability increased significantly compared to scenarios where consent was absent. </p>



<p>“Although I expected societal acceptability for digital resurrection to be higher when consent was expressed, the stark difference in acceptance rates&nbsp;-- 58% for consent versus 3% for dissent&nbsp;-- was surprising,” says Iwasaki. </p>



<p>This underscores the paramount importance of the deceased's wishes in public opinion regarding digital resurrection.</p>



<p>“While the will of the deceased is important in determining the societal acceptability of digital resurrection, other factors such as ethical concerns about life and death, along with general apprehension towards new technology are also significant,” says Iwasaki.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-rights-and-sentiments">Balancing rights and sentiments</h2>



<p>The study highlights a discord between existing law and public sentiment. The general consensus that the dead's wishes should be honored is not legally protected in most jurisdictions. </p>



<p>This disparity is evident in instances like the digital recreation of John Lennon in "Forrest Gump" or the animated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/older-adults-view-ai-as-more-human-like-than-younger-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hologram</a> of Amy Winehouse, where the rights of the deceased were superseded.</p>



<p>We should certainly engage in this conversation now. Many generative AI chatbot services, like <a href="https://replika.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Replika</a> and Project December, already facilitate interactions with chatbots that replicate the personalities of real people. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.myyov.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">'You, Only Virtual' (YOV)</a> service enables users to create a 'versona' chatbot by uploading someone's text messages, emails, and voice conversations. </p>



<p>Additionally, Microsoft secured a patent in 2020 for developing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-semantic-decoder-technology-can-read-minds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chatbots using text</a>, voice, and image data of living individuals, historical figures, and fictional characters, offering 2D or 3D renderings.</p>



<p>This brings us to an essential consideration: should we include digital directives in our wills? Iwasaki believes it's a conversation worth having, especially given the lack of clear legal regulations. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-road-ahead-for-digital-resurrection">The road ahead for digital resurrection</h2>



<p>Documenting such wishes could provide clarity for family and associates and may hold weight in future legal frameworks.</p>



<p>“For those with strong preferences documenting their wishes could be meaningful,” says Iwasaki. “At a minimum, it serves as a clear communication of one’s will to family and associates, and may be considered when legal foundations are better established in the future.”</p>



<p>Iwasaki plans to extend his research to the digital resurrection of celebrities and broader legal rights. He advocates for an opt-in rule, requiring consent for digital resurrection, as a potential safeguard for the deceased's rights. </p>



<p>“It’s necessary first to discuss what rights should be protected, to what extent, then create rules accordingly,” he explains. </p>



<p>“My research, building upon prior discussions in the field, argues that the opt-in rule requiring the deceased's consent for digital resurrection might be one way to protect their rights.”</p>



<p>His work underscores a critical juncture in our technological journey: balancing innovation with ethical responsibility and legal foresight.</p>

<p>Initially popularized by a "Black Mirror" episode, the idea of reanimating the deceased through their digital footprints has seen significant development, from Eternime's ambitious "Skype for the dead" proposal in 2017 to the current use of AI and machine-learning technologies. </p>



<p>These advancements have brought us to a point where creating digital avatars of loved ones post-mortem is not just imaginable but achievable, prompting critical reflections on the ethical, legal, and social implications of such technologies.</p>



<p>Dr. Masaki Iwasaki's research at Seoul National University sheds light on these concerns by exploring public opinion on digital resurrection under varying conditions of consent. </p>

Digital resurrection: Do dead people have the right to forbid it?

<p>Anacondas are solitary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coyotes-move-into-towns-to-avoid-predators-only-to-be-killed-by-humans/">predators</a>. They spend much of their time alone, submerged in the murky waters of rivers and swamps in South America, where they hunt for prey such as fish, birds, mammals, and even caimans.</p>



<p>Recent research from <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Queensland</a> has unearthed a surprising truth: anacondas are more diverse than meets the eye.</p>



<p>The green anaconda reigned supreme as the sole king (or queen) of its color class. But hidden within this seemingly unified group lurked a previously unknown species: the northern green anaconda.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invitation-to-explore-anacondas">Invitation to explore anacondas</h2>



<p>"Our team received a rare invitation from the Waorani people to explore the region and collect samples from a population of anacondas, rumoured to be the largest in existence," explained Professor Bryan Fry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The indigenous hunters took us into the jungle on a 10-day expedition to search for these snakes, which they consider sacred. We paddled canoes down the river system and were lucky enough to find several anacondas lurking in the shallows, lying in wait for prey.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-differences">Genetic differences</h2>



<p>The research team then explored the genetic differences between various types of green and yellow anacondas. The goal was to understand how these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dipsadine-snakes-have-skulls-that-evolve-to-fit-their-needs/">snakes</a> are related to each other and how diverse they are genetically.</p>



<p>Previously, yellow anacondas were classified into three separate species based on physical appearance and where they live. However, this study suggests these might not be truly distinct groups based on their genes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-green-anaconda-nbsp">New green anaconda&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While studying the green anaconda's genes, the scientists found two distinct groups within what was previously thought to be one species. These groups live in different parts of South America, with one group in the north and the other in the south. Interestingly, both types were found in French Guiana, suggesting it might be an area where they meet.</p>



<p>Even though they look almost identical, the genetic differences between the green anaconda groups are much larger than those seen in different types of yellow anacondas. Based on their genes, location, and level of difference, the researchers have classified the northern group as a new species - the northern green anaconda.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-types-of-scales"> Many types of scales</h2>



<p>The northern green anaconda is covered in many different types of scales, each with its own location and function. On its underside, from the neck to the tail, it has 247-249 ventral scales. Underneath its tail are 67-68 subcaudal scales, which help identify the specific characteristics of this snake species. Around the middle of its body, it has 65 dorsal scales. These contribute to the overall structure of the snake.</p>



<p>The snake's back is patterned with 80-90 blotches, which help it camouflage itself in its environment. Additionally, 10-20 of these blotches touch or overlap with each other. On its upper lip, the snake has 14-15 supralabial scales, which might be involved in sensing its surroundings. The lower lip has 16-20 infralabial scales, also likely playing a role in its senses.</p>



<p>Below each eye, there are 2-3 infraocular scales, contributing to the unique shape of its face. Around each eye, there are 8-9 scales, showing the detailed pattern of scales in this area. Finally, near its nostrils, the snake has 4-5 loreal scales and 1-2 supraocular scales, further detailing its facial scale pattern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-anaconda-taxonomy">Rethinking anaconda taxonomy</h2>



<p>The experts also examined the classification of three groups of yellow anacondas: Eunectes notaeus, Eunectes deschauenseei, and Eunectes beniensis. They looked at the snakes' genes and found that the groups aren't as distinct as previously thought.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While E. deschauenseei and E. beniensis have some unique features, their genes are very similar to E. notaeus. This suggests they might not be separate species but rather variations of the same species.</p>



<p>The study proposes that all three groups should be combined into one species, E. notaeus. This challenges the current classification based on location and physical appearance. However, the researchers acknowledge the need for further studies using more genetic data and examining snakes from a wider range of locations.</p>



<p>One possibility is that E. beniensis and E. deschauenseei are simply E. notaeus that live in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/californias-forests-are-losing-their-ability-to-recover/">forests</a> and have adapted to that environment, explaining their darker color and resemblance to another snake species. Until more research is done, the study suggests grouping these snakes together under E. notaeus and carefully considering future classification based on additional evidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications">Broader implications</h2>



<p>The findings have crucial implications for conservation strategies. Recognizing the northern green anaconda as a distinct species highlights the need for targeted conservation efforts to protect it.&nbsp;Similarly, the potential reclassification of yellow anacondas requires a reassessment of conservation priorities and strategies for these snakes.</p>



<p>The findings emphasize the importance of habitat protection, not only for the anacondas themselves but also for the broader <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammal-defaunation-is-wiping-out-valuable-ecosystem-services/">ecosystem services</a> these top predators provide, such as controlling prey populations.</p>



<p>Their vulnerability to habitat degradation, conflict with humans, and impacts on their prey base necessitates urgent conservation measures to mitigate these threats.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the study serves as a wake-up call. It highlights the importance of ongoing research to understand the true diversity of our planet's creatures. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research">Future research</h2>



<p>Professor Fry has announced that his next research project will tackle the pressing issue of heavy metal contamination in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-rainforest-is-approaching-widespread-collapse/">Amazon rainforest</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"These rare anacondas, and the other species that share this remote ecosystem, face significant challenges. It's not only these gigantic snakes that are facing environmental threats, but almost all living things in the region," said Professor Fry.</p>



<p>"The discovery of a new species of anaconda is exciting, but it is critical to highlight the urgent need to further research these threatened species and ecosystems. Of particular urgency is research into how petrochemicals from oil spills are affecting the fertility and reproductive biology of these rare snakes and other keystone species in the Amazon."</p>

<p>The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made a cosmic discovery about reionization that unravels more of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/red-supermassive-black-hole-found-in-the-shadows-of-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mysteries</a> of the universe's first billion years. </p>



<p>An international team of scientists has successfully conducted the first spectroscopic observations of the universe's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxy-named-nube-almost-invisible-astronomers-baffled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">faintest galaxies</a> during this formative period, offering insights into a fundamental question that has puzzled astronomers for decades: what powered the reionization of the universe?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-reionization-and-the-dawn-of-the-universe">Decoding reionization and the dawn of the universe</h2>



<p>The era of reionization marks a critical phase in the universe's early history, a time when it was plunged into darkness, devoid of stars and galaxies, and enveloped in a dense hydrogen fog. </p>



<p>This period ended when the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-may-soon-observe-the-earliest-light-in-our-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first stars</a> ionized the surrounding gas, allowing light to traverse the cosmos. Determining the sources of radiation capable of clearing this primordial fog has been a key focus of astronomical research for years.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://jwst-uncover.github.io/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNCOVER</a> program, which stands for Ultradeep <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Webb/Webb_s_instruments" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NIRSpec</a> and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization, utilized both imaging and spectroscopic techniques to study the lensing cluster Abell 2744, also known as Pandora’s Cluster. </p>



<p>The phenomenon of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-finds-a-second-lensed-supernova-in-a-distant-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational lensing</a>, where the massive cluster acts as a 'lens' warping the space around it, magnifies and distorts the light from distant galaxies. This effect enabled the team to identify eight exceptionally faint galaxies beyond <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Webb/Webb_finds_dwarf_galaxies_reionised_the_Universe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Abell 2744</a> that would otherwise remain hidden from view.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-of-ultra-faint-galaxies">Discovery of ultra-faint galaxies</h2>



<p>The revelations from this study are profound. The faint galaxies identified are found to be significant sources of ultraviolet light, emitting at levels four times greater than previously estimated. </p>



<p>This suggests that these dwarf galaxies were likely the primary contributors to the reionization process.</p>



<p>Iryna Chemerynska from the <a href="https://www.iap.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris</a> highlights the critical role of these ultra-faint galaxies in the cosmic saga. </p>



<p>"This discovery unveils the crucial role played by ultra-faint galaxies in the early Universe's evolution. They produce ionising photons that transform neutral hydrogen into ionised plasma during cosmic reionization. It highlights the importance of understanding low-mass galaxies in shaping the Universe's history," Chemerynska explained.</p>



<p>Echoing this sentiment, team leader Hakim Atek, also from the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris, emphasizes the surprising efficiency of these galaxies. </p>



<p>"Despite their tiny size, these low-mass galaxies are prolific producers of energetic radiation. Their collective influence during this period was so substantial that they could transform the entire state of the Universe," Atek explains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methodology-and-technological-marvels">Methodology and technological marvels</h2>



<p>The team's methodology involved an innovative combination of sensitive imaging data from Webb and the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Hubble_overview" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble Space Telescope</a>, focusing on selecting faint galaxy candidates from the epoch of reionization. </p>



<p>Following this, Webb’s Near-InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) played a pivotal role in capturing spectra of these galaxies, marking a significant milestone in our understanding of faint galaxies' commonality and ionizing power during this epoch.</p>



<p>Hakim Atek further elaborates on the technical achievements that facilitated this discovery.</p>



<p>"The incredible sensitivity of NIRSpec, coupled with the gravitational amplification by Abell 2744, allowed us to explore these galaxies from the universe's first billion years in unprecedented detail, despite being over 100 times fainter than our Milky Way," Atek explained further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-explorations-the-glimpse-program">Future explorations: The GLIMPSE program</h2>



<p>Looking ahead, the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/jwst/science-execution/program-information?id=3293" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GLIMPSE</a> observing program aims to extend these findings by targeting another galaxy cluster, Abell S1063. </p>



<p>This future endeavor seeks to identify even fainter galaxies from the epoch of reionization, potentially confirming whether the dwarf galaxies studied are representative of the broader <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shapes-of-one-million-galaxies-hint-at-the-universes-origins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy distribution</a>. </p>



<p>As the current findings are based on a single field, further observations are necessary to validate these results and understand the ionizing properties of faint galaxies in different cosmic environments.</p>

<p>As discussed above, reionization marks a pivotal epoch in the history of the universe, a transformative process that reshaped the cosmic landscape. </p>



<p>Following the Big Bang, the universe was in a hot, dense state, filled with a plasma of protons, electrons, and photons. </p>



<p>As it expanded and cooled, protons and electrons combined to form neutral hydrogen atoms, leading to the Cosmic Dark Ages, a period devoid of light, except for the fading glow of the Cosmic Microwave Background.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-era-of-reionization">The era of reionization</h3>



<p>The Era of Reionization began around 400,000 years after the Big Bang and is thought to have lasted until approximately one billion years post-Big Bang. </p>



<p>This epoch was characterized by the first stars and galaxies forming out of dense pockets of gas in the universe. </p>



<p>The intense ultraviolet light from these first luminous objects was powerful enough to ionize the surrounding neutral hydrogen, stripping electrons away from protons and thus ending the universe's neutral phase.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-the-first-stars-and-galaxies">Role of the first stars and galaxies</h3>



<p>The first stars, often referred to as Population III stars, played a crucial role in this process. These stars were massive, hot, and short-lived, emitting a significant amount of ultraviolet radiation capable of ionizing hydrogen over vast distances. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
