<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of New South Wales</a> (UNSW) Sydney have developed a comprehensive plan to cool off one of the world’s hottest cities. The researchers outlined a strategy to lower the temperature of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia by as much as 4.5°C. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-extreme-heat-nbsp">Reducing extreme heat&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In collaboration with the Royal Commission of Riyadh, the experts present a multi-faceted approach combining "super cool" building materials, expanded green spaces, and energy-efficient retrofitting to tackle extreme urban heat.</p>



<p>The study was led by Professor Mattheos Santamouris, who is renowned for his work in developing strategies to reduce urban heat. The research is especially relevant as over 450 cities struggle with extreme heat, exacerbating energy consumption and posing severe health risks.</p>



<p>“The project demonstrates the tremendous impact advanced heat mitigation technologies and techniques can have to reduce urban overheating, decrease cooling needs, and improve lives,” said Professor Santamouris.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-heat-island-nbsp">Urban heat island&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is a prime example of an urban heat island. Encircled by desert, the city often experiences <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-linked-to-vision-impairment/">temperatures</a> soaring above 50°C during summer months. </p>



<p>Contributing factors include limited vegetation, heat-trapping conventional building materials like asphalt and concrete, and additional heat from vehicles and industrial activities. This scenario is further intensified by climate change and rapid urbanization.</p>



<p>The UNSW team conducted extensive simulations in Riyadh's Al Masiaf precinct, analyzing the energy performance of 3,323 urban buildings under eight different heat mitigation scenarios. These scenarios combined various super cool materials, vegetation types, and energy retrofitting levels to identify the most effective strategies for cooling the city and reducing its energy requirements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pinpointing-the-optimal-approach-nbsp">Pinpointing the optimal approach&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The simulations revealed that it's possible to lower outdoor temperatures by nearly 4.5°C during summer months, while also conserving up to 16% in cooling energy. The optimal approach for Riyadh includes the implementation of super cool materials on building roofs and more than doubling the number of irrigated trees to enhance transpiration cooling.</p>



<p>The study warns against the indiscriminate application of urban cooling techniques without detailed scientific optimization. For instance, using non-irrigated greenery could inadvertently increase the city's temperature.</p>



<p>“By implementing the right combination of advanced heat mitigation technologies and techniques, it is possible to decrease the ambient temperature at the precinct scale,” said Professor Santamouris. “For a sweltering city the size of Riyadh, significantly reducing cooling needs is also tremendous for sustainability.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-far-reaching-benefits-nbsp">Far-reaching benefits&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Professor Santamouris noted that lowering the temperature of the city will help increase thermal comfort for people as well as reduce health issues from severe heat, decrease the concentration of pollutants, and improve human productivity.</p>



<p>Although not directly addressed in this study, previous research indicates that such cooling strategies can also reduce heat-related mortality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-impact">Energy impact</h2>



<p>The researchers examined the energy impact of retrofitting all 3,323 buildings in the precinct, in conjunction with the proposed urban-scale heat mitigation technologies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By optimally combining cooling technologies with retrofitting measures – like better windows, insulation, and cool roofs – the cooling demand could be slashed by up to 35 percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This represents a substantial reduction to the energy needs for Riyadh that would help further reduce costs associated with cooling for the city while improving the quality of life for the local population,” said Professor Santamouris.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers now hope to work with the Royal Commission of Riyadh to begin implementing their heat mitigation plan, which will be the largest of its kind in the world.</p>



<p>“Once implemented at the city scale, these advanced heat mitigation technologies will deliver important health, sustainability and economic outcomes for the city for years to come,” said Professor Santamouris.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Researchers on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal have unearthed a lost <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mangrove-forest-reveals-ancient-climate-change-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mangrove</a> forest, estimated to be over 22 million years old. </p>



<p>This revelation was made possible through the identification of the fossilized <em>Sonneratioxylon barrocoloradoensis</em>, a mangrove species previously unknown to science.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-find-a-lost-mangrove-forest">How to find a lost mangrove forest</h2>



<p>The study, conducted by experts at the <a href="https://stri.si.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute</a>, utilized radiometric analysis to date the forest and its 121 fossilized wood specimens back to the Aquitanian stage of the Early Miocene. </p>



<p>During this era, central Panama was a narrow peninsula, bridging North America and separated from South America, with high volcanic activity.</p>



<p>It's this volcanic activity that likely led to the forest's destruction. Analyses of sediment and rock indicate that these trees thrived in river or ocean environments until a volcanic event abruptly buried them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-mangroves">Understanding mangroves</h2>



<p>Intriguingly, the wood anatomy of the newly discovered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-could-help-save-mangrove-forests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mangroves</a> bears similarity to a type found in Southeast Asia. </p>



<p>The researchers named this species after its discovery site, Barro Colorado Island, and estimate that these trees reached heights of up to 82 feet.</p>



<p>The tallest specimens measured beyond 131 feet, surpassing the height of contemporary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restoring-mangroves-could-help-countries-meet-their-climate-goals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mangrove</a> forests.</p>



<p>The authors note, "The fossil wood assemblage on Barro Colorado Island likely represents a mangrove forest along the coast of central Panama's volcanic chain."</p>

<p>A recent study has revealed alarming findings regarding the treatment of patients with broken heart syndrome, also known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This condition, which is often triggered by extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/managing-negative-emotions-may-prevent-dementia/">emotional distress</a>, has been shown to have a higher mortality rate than previously understood, with current treatments proving to be ineffective.</p>



<p>The study was conducted by a team of experts led by Professor Dana Dawson from the <a href="https://www.abdn.ac.uk/">University of Aberdeen</a> Cardiology and Cardiovascular Research Unit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ineffective-treatment-nbsp">Ineffective treatment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings highlight a critical gap in the medical understanding and treatment of broken heart syndrome.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Professor Dawson said the data shows “quite starkly” that takotsubo syndrome, which is more common in women, is not being treated correctly and more research is needed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-emotional-distress-nbsp">Extreme emotional distress&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can be triggered by extreme emotional distress, leading to its nickname of broken-heart syndrome," said Professor Dawson.</p>



<p>"It happens as a reaction to upsetting events such as the death of a family member, the ending of a relationship, or illness, when distress signals travel from the brain to the heart. But understanding is growing and there is evidence that it can be caused by other factors, including physical trauma or no incident at all."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complications-and-symptoms">Complications and symptoms</h2>



<p>“Takotsubo cardiomyopathy happens when one of the heart’s chambers, the left ventricle, suddenly balloons and weakens. The heart then can’t pump blood around the body as before and the extra stress leads to heart failure. It can develop at any age, and typically affects more women than men."</p>



<p>“Symptoms can appear like a heart attack including shortness of breath and chest pain. But takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a different condition entirely and, unlike a heart attack, patients don’t suffer from a blockage of the arteries that supply the heart with blood.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-rate-nbsp">Survival rate&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed data from 3,720 individuals, including 620 with takotsubo syndrome, spanning from 2010 to 2017.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results of the study are particularly concerning as they show that patients with takotsubo have a worse survival rate than the general population and are just as vulnerable as those who have had a heart attack.</p>



<p>Among the participants, 153 with takotsubo died over the median follow-up of 5.5 years, a mortality rate exceeding that of the general population.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts found that takotsubo patients were often prescribed the same medication as those who suffered heart attacks. However, these treatments did not improve survival rates and had uncertain benefits. This indicates an urgent need to reevaluate the treatment approaches for broken heart syndrome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed-nbsp">Further research is needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Professor Dawson said researchers were surprised that takotsubo patients were medicated in the same way as heart attack patients.</p>



<p>“These patients have increased mortality compared to the general population, an increased vulnerability to developing heart conditions, and as much chance of dying from this as people who have suffered heart attacks. It is vital that we identify precise ways to treat this unique group of people, and that is what we plan to do as we continue our research," said Professor Dawson.</p>



<p>“This study has identified one drug as a potential breakthrough with promising therapeutic benefit, however further research is needed to establish if this is the key to treating this devastating illness.”</p>

The study, a collaboration between <a href="https://dornsife.usc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC Dornsife College</a> and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's <a href="https://nhm.org/community-science-nhm/bioscan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BioSCAN project</a>, focuses on nonbiological factors like temperature fluctuations and proximity to the ocean and their impact on arthropods in urban settings.</p>



<p>The BioSCAN project, bolstered by around 80 volunteers, involved setting up Malaise traps across Los Angeles to collect various flying arthropods, including bees, flies, and moths. </p>



<p>Spiders were also hand-collected in these areas. This community science initiative played a vital role in understanding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-declines-in-europe-linked-to-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropod diversity</a> in the bustling metropolis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insects-have-diverse-responses-to-humans">Insects have diverse responses to humans</h2>



<p><a href="https://dornsife.usc.edu/profile/laura-melissa-guzman/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melissa Guzman</a>, the study's lead researcher and Assistant Professor of <a href="https://dornsife.usc.edu/bisc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Biological Sciences</a> and <a href="https://www.qcb-dornsife.usc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantitative and Computational Biology</a> at USC Dornsife, highlighted the unexpected diversity in bug responses to humans in urban environmental factors.</p>



<p>These included land covered by asphalt or concrete, and daily temperature changes. Contrary to initial thoughts, these factors had varied impacts across different arthropod groups.</p>



<p>For instance, the prevalence of concrete and asphalt surfaces increased the diversity of fruit flies but decreased that of crane flies. </p>



<p>“In general, we thought most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-insect-species-face-the-greatest-declines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a> would be similarly affected by environmental factors such as land covered by asphalt or concrete and temperature fluctuations over a 24-hour cycle,” said Guzman.</p>



<p>“Instead, we found an unexpectedly large range of responses to factors such as these, both within closely related groups and across different groups.”</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-pest-control-tree-species-diversity-increases-spider-density/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spiders</a>, interestingly, thrived in these hard-covered areas. Temperature variations also significantly influenced the diversity of specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-has-increased-seasonal-insect-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect families</a>.</p>



<p>The researchers theorize that summertime's higher temperatures cause the drying up of plants that aphids feed on, thus depleting a primary food source for many hover flies. </p>



<p>Additionally, they observe that non-native honeybees increase their foraging in warmer temperatures, directly competing for the same food resources as some hover flies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-planning-and-biodiversity">Urban planning and biodiversity</h2>



<p>These insights are crucial for urban planners and developers. Understanding the link between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-do-so-few-insect-species-live-in-the-ocean-scientists-think-they-know/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species diversity</a> and factors like land value and temperature can guide adjustments in urban projects to enhance biodiversity. </p>



<p>This, in turn, brings numerous benefits, including improved air quality, flood risk reduction, and better mental health for city dwellers.</p>



<p>Brian Brown, entomology curator at the Natural History Museum, revealed an exciting outcome. They discovered many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-larvae-had-sophisticated-defense-strategies-100-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropod species</a> previously unknown in the L.A. area, including about 50 new to science. </p>



<p>“Based on that, we have a new understanding of what the biodiversity of Los Angeles is like in terms of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-populations-are-headed-towards-widespread-chaos-in-our-continually-warming-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a>,” he said. “So instead of the 3,500 or 4,000 species that we previously thought, now we’re thinking there are close to 20,000 species living here in the ‘city of insects.’”</p>



<p>In a heartwarming tribute, each newly discovered species was named after a family participating in the BioSCAN project, emphasizing the crucial role of community involvement in conservation efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-path-forward-for-humans-and-bugs">The path forward for humans and bugs</h2>



<p>Despite some limitations, like not accounting for seasonal variations in weather, the study offers practical ways for Los Angeles residents to enhance arthropod biodiversity. </p>



<p>Guzman suggests prioritizing green areas, reducing pesticide use, and designing microhabitats in urban developments to support <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rise-and-fall-of-insect-populations-directly-linked-to-the-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diverse species</a>.</p>



<p>“Prioritizing green areas and reducing the use of pesticides would go a long way,” Guzman says. “And urban planners and builders could include microhabitats designed to allow a greater variety of species to thrive.”</p>



<p>While focused on Los Angeles, the study's findings have broader implications for urban environments across western North America. </p>



<p>By understanding and applying these insights, land developers and homeowners can play a significant role in nurturing and preserving the delicate balance of urban ecosystems.</p>



<p>In summary, the study emphasizes the often-unseen diversity of urban wildlife and provides a roadmap for fostering healthy, resilient urban ecosystems. </p>

<p>Astronomers recently unveiled the discovery of an Earth-like planet, younger and closer than any previously identified, named HD 63433d.</p>



<p>This exceptionally hot world offers an unparalleled opportunity to study planetary evolution, given its proximity to our planet and a sun-like star.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.astro.wisc.edu/staff/soares-furtado-melinda/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Melinda Soares-Furtado</a>, a NASA Hubble Fellow at the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Wisconsin–Madison</a> soon to be an astronomy professor, and <a href="https://astro.ufl.edu/directory/ben-capistrant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benjamin Capistrant</a>, a recent graduate now studying at the <a href="https://www.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Florida</a>, led this extraordinary study. </p>



<p>Their findings, detailed in <em>The Astronomical Journal</em>, were supported by a global team of co-authors.</p>



<p>Soares-Furtado highlights the significance of HD 63433d, stating, “It’s a useful planet because it may be like an early Earth.”</p>



<p>This comparison paves the way for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/theia-ancient-planet-buried-inside-of-earth-may-be-the-origin-of-our-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early planetary conditions</a> and evolutionary processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-characteristics-of-earth-like-planet-hd-63433d">Characteristics of Earth-like planet HD 63433d</h2>



<p>HD 63433d is the<a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Earth-sized-planet_HD-63433d_Ursa-major-constellation_Credit-Alyssa-Jankowski_2m.webp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> third planet orbiting a star</a> named HD 63433. Its orbit is remarkably short, completing a full revolution around its star every 4.2 days. This proximity has intriguing implications. </p>



<p>“Even though it's really close-orbiting, we can use follow-up data to search for evidence of outgassing and atmospheric loss that could be important constraints on how terrestrial worlds evolve,” explains Soares-Furtado. </p>



<p>However, she notes, “that’s where the similarities [with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earth-will-meet-its-demise-astronomers-witness-a-star-devour-a-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>] end — and end dramatically.”</p>



<p>The planet is likely tidally locked, meaning one side perpetually faces the star. This results in extreme conditions: one side may reach temperatures up to 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit.</p>



<p>At these temperatures, HD 63433d could possibly host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-lava-worlds-magma-oceans-affect-the-evolution-of-hot-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flowing lava</a>, while the other remains in eternal darkness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hd-63433-the-star-of-the-show">HD 63433: The star of the show</h2>



<p>The star HD 63433 shares similarities with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-dies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our sun</a> in size and type but is significantly younger, at roughly 400 million years old. </p>



<p>It's located about 73 light years away, in the constellation <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursa_Major" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ursa Major</a>, which includes the Big Dipper. </p>



<p>“On a dark night in Madison, you could see [HD 63433] through a good pair of binoculars,” Soares-Furtado remarks.</p>



<p>HD 63433d's discovery is a part of the <a href="https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20210015717" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">THYME</a> planet-hunting project. Utilizing data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (<a href="https://tess.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TESS</a>), the team initially identified two mini-Neptune-sized planets in 2020. </p>



<p>Continued observations led to the detection of HD 63433d as it transited between its star and the satellite.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-in-the-study-of-hd-63433d">What’s next in the study of HD 63433d</h2>



<p>The research team, including UW–Madison’s Andrew C. Nine, Alyssa Jankowski, and Professor Juliette Becker, is enthusiastic about the future study of HD 63433d. </p>



<p>Its young, vibrant star is visible from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, allowing for extensive observation using various instruments like the South African Large Telescope and the WIYN Observatory in Arizona, projects UW–Madison played a role in developing.</p>



<p>The proximity of HD 63433d offers unique opportunities for studying gas escape from the planet and possibly measuring its magnetic field. </p>



<p>Soares-Furtado emphasizes the excitement of this discovery, “This is our solar backyard, and that's kind of exciting. What sort of information can a star this close, with such a crowded system around it, give away? How will it help us as we move on to look for planets among the maybe 100 other, similar stars in this young group it’s part of?”</p>



<p>This fascinating discovery sheds light on a new world, while opening doors to a deeper understanding of the cosmos, especially regarding young, Earth-like planets.</p>

<p>Global warming demands immediate and effective actions. One critical aspect of tackling this challenge is the reduction of greenhouse gas <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epa-plans-to-eliminate-greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-power-plants-by-2040/">emissions</a>, specifically carbon dioxide (CO2).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Traditional approaches are not sufficient to meet the ambitious climate targets set by the global community. Consequently, there is a growing emphasis on innovative methods to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-capture-technologies-nbsp">Carbon capture technologies&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Current carbon capture technologies are energy-intensive and costly. This limitation highlights the urgent need for alternative, efficient methods.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A team of researchers at <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a> led by Professor Maria Lukatskaya has developed a novel approach to direct CO2 capture by harnessing the power of sunlight.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-phenomenon-nbsp">Chemical phenomenon&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In acidic aqueous solutions, CO2 exists in its original state, while in alkaline solutions, it converts to carbonates. This reaction is reversible, depending on the solution's acidity.</p>



<p>To manipulate this acidity, the ETH team introduced photoacids into the solution. These special molecules respond to light. In the presence of light, they acidify the liquid, and in darkness, they revert, making the liquid more alkaline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-technique-nbsp">Breakthrough technique&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The process begins by passing air through an alkaline solution containing photoacids in the dark, causing CO2 to react and form carbonates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once a significant amount of carbonates accumulate, the solution is exposed to light, turning acidic and releasing CO2 gas, similar to the effervescence observed in a cola bottle. The released CO2 is then collected in gas tanks. After most CO2 is expelled, the light is turned off, and the cycle restarts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overcoming-challenges-nbsp">Overcoming challenges&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Initially, the researchers found that the photoacids were unstable in water. “In the course of our earliest experiments, we realized that the molecules would decompose after one day,” said study lead author Anna de Vries.</p>



<p>To overcome this, the team experimented with a mix of water and an organic solvent, eventually finding an optimum ratio that stabilized the photoacids for nearly a month and allowed the required reversible reaction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advantages-over-traditional-methods">Advantages over traditional methods</h2>



<p>The new technique stands out from existing carbon capture processes, which typically involve cyclical temperature-based systems requiring significant energy for heating and cooling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By contrast, the ETH Zurich method is more energy-efficient as it eliminates the need for heating, potentially operating solely on sunlight.</p>



<p>“Another interesting aspect of our system is that we can go from alkaline to acidic within seconds and back to alkaline within minutes. That lets us switch between carbon capture and release much more quickly than in a temperature-​driven system,” explained de Vries.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, the researchers aim to enhance the stability of photoacid molecules and optimize the process parameters for potential market application.</p>

<p>A new study has revealed that the world's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-of-americas-beaches-contain-alarming-levels-of-fecal-contamination/">beaches</a> and dunes are under significant threat due to a phenomenon known as "coastal squeeze." This issue stems from the encroachment of roads and buildings on these natural landscapes.</p>



<p>Coastal squeeze has adverse effects on biodiversity, drinking water supplies, and our protection against rising sea levels. However, the research provides a glimmer of hope, showing that beaches and dunes can be effectively safeguarded through the designation of nature reserves.</p>



<p>The study was led by a team of experts from the <a href="https://www.nioz.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Netherlands Institute for Sea Research</a>, University of Groningen, Utrecht University, TU Delft, and the Dutch Forestry Commission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-startling-reality">Startling reality</h2>



<p>The research highlights a startling reality: on average, a mere 390-meter walk from any given point on a beach leads to the nearest road or building.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This proximity, while seemingly convenient for beachgoers, actually spells disaster for the environment.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vital-functions-nbsp">Vital functions&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Beaches and dunes serve as crucial natural barriers against flooding and important habitats for diverse wildlife.&nbsp;</p>



<p>But as these areas become increasingly boxed in by human infrastructure on one side and rising sea levels on the other, their ability to perform these vital functions is severely compromised.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extensive-data-analysis">Extensive data analysis</h2>



<p>To quantify the extent of coastal squeeze, the team used a combination of previous measurement data from TU Delft.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers conducted an extensive survey, measuring the straight-line distance from the coastline to the nearest paved road or building along all the sandy beaches globally. This meticulous process involved 235,469 individual measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings">Key findings</h2>



<p>The study revealed that on a global scale, human infrastructure is alarmingly close to the sea, with the average distance to the first building or paved road being just 390 meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The situation is even more dire in densely populated regions like the Netherlands (210 meters) and France (30 meters). Europe emerges as the continent with the most constrained beaches and dunes, averaging a distance of only 130 meters, in contrast to Oceania's 2.8 kilometers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-outlook">Future outlook</h2>



<p>Looking ahead, the issue of coastal squeeze is expected to worsen due to rising sea levels. In a natural scenario, beaches and dunes would migrate inland to adapt, but the presence of buildings and roads obstructs this natural process.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers project that by 2100, up to 30 percent of the world's beaches and dunes could be eroded or submerged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-reserves-offer-hope">Nature reserves offer hope</h2>



<p>The study, however, offers hope that the establishment of nature reserves could help prevent the negative impacts of coastal squeeze. Areas with protected status exhibit a significantly greater distance between infrastructure and the coastline.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Encouragingly, we find that nature reserves relieve squeezing by 4-7 times. Yet, at present only 16% of world’s sandy shores have a protected status. We therefore advocate the incorporation of nature protection into spatial planning policies," wrote the study authors.</p>

<p>A recent report published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41558-023-01900-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Climate Change</em></a> emphasizes the crucial role of addressing inequality in achieving net-zero <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-co2-emissions-expected-to-reach-a-new-high-in-2023/">carbon emissions</a>. The researchers argue that inequality significantly limits individuals' capacity to adopt low-carbon behaviors, calling for societal changes and political acknowledgment of these barriers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-various-forms-of-inequality-nbsp">Various forms of inequality&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The report, authored by Dr. Charlotte Kukowski, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>, and Dr. Emma Garnett, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a>, highlights various forms of inequality, including wealth, income, political influence, free time, and access to low-carbon options like public transport and housing insulation subsidies.</p>



<p>“It’s increasingly acknowledged that there’s inequality in terms of who causes climate change and who suffers the consequences, but there’s far less attention being paid to the effect of inequality in changing behaviors to reduce carbon emissions,” Kukowski said, noting that those on lower incomes face more restrictions in reducing their carbon footprint due to cost and time constraints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-financial-inequalities-nbsp">Financial inequalities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The report details how deep-rooted inequalities hinder the shift to lower-carbon behaviors. For instance, in the UK, insulating a house can be costly, with subsidies mainly available for homeowners, leaving renters with little control over their living conditions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The UK's old, poorly insulated houses demand more energy for heating, necessitating government schemes that aid lower-income groups in reducing home carbon emissions.</p>



<p>Similarly, plant-based meat alternatives, though more sustainable, are often less affordable than animal products. Despite the significant impact of eating more plant-based foods on carbon footprint reduction, the cost makes it less accessible for those on lower incomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inability-to-change-behaviors-nbsp">Inability to change behaviors&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers also highlight the challenges in acquiring electric vehicles and bikes due to their high upfront costs and the inaccessibility of tax breaks or financing for those not in permanent employment. Additionally, inadequate public transport services, especially in rural areas, make it difficult for many to opt for this lower-carbon transport method.</p>



<p>“If you have more money you're likely to cause more carbon emissions, but you're also more likely to have greater ability to change the things you do and reduce those emissions,” Garnett explains. She stresses the need for interventions targeting high emitters and making lower-carbon choices in areas like food and transport accessible to everyone.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overcoming-the-barriers-to-change">Overcoming the barriers to change</h2>



<p>The researchers criticize current campaigns focusing mainly on providing information, pointing out that understanding the issues doesn't automatically overcome barriers to change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Policies and psychological approaches often overemphasize individual agency, overlooking how socioeconomic inequality can constrain access to low-carbon alternatives. We argue that tackling these inequalities is urgent for impactful, equitable behavior change," wrote the experts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts propose policy interventions, such as urban planning for bus and bike lanes, progressive taxation, and employer-subsidized low-carbon meal options, to facilitate more inclusive and practical ways for people to adopt lower-carbon lifestyles.</p>



<p>This report underscores the intricate link between socio-economic inequality and environmental sustainability, advocating for comprehensive strategies that address both to effectively combat climate change.</p>

<p>Experts at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Boulder</a> have discovered a "chemical imprint of desire" in the brain, revealing a profound insight into the neurological underpinnings of love and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spending-time-with-a-romantic-partner-can-improve-your-health/">relationships</a>. The study highlights the critical role of dopamine in sustaining romantic bonds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monogamous-prairie-voles-nbsp">Monogamous prairie voles&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research, led by Professor Zoe Donaldson, was focused on the behavior of prairie voles, a species known for their monogamous pair bonding. Like humans, these creatures exhibit long-term coupling, shared child-rearing, and even show signs of grief upon losing a partner.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Professor Donaldson's work with prairie voles offers a window into how the human brain develops and maintains intimate relationships, as well as the neurochemical response when these bonds break.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-signature-of-desire">Biological signature of desire</h2>



<p>“What we have found, essentially, is a biological signature of desire that helps us explain why we want to be with some people more than other people,” explained Professor Donaldson.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study illustrates for the first time how dopamine, a neurotransmitter, is vital for keeping love alive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As humans, our entire social world is basically defined by different degrees of selective desire to interact with different people, whether it’s your romantic partner or your close friends,” said Professor Donaldson. “This research suggests that certain people leave a unique chemical imprint on our brain that drives us to maintain these bonds over time.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-love-lights-up-the-brain">Love lights up the brain</h2>



<p>To investigate, the researchers used advanced neuroimaging technology. They observed voles' brain activities as they attempted to reunite with their partners, either by pressing a lever or climbing a barrier.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The focus was on the nucleus accumbens, a brain area that motivates rewarding behaviors. The team used a tiny fiber-optic sensor to track activity in the nucleus accumbens millisecond by millisecond. Remarkably, each time the voles neared their partners, this region showed a surge in dopamine, lighting up "like a glow stick."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewarding-relationships-nbsp">Rewarding relationships&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study first author Anne Pierce said that when the voles pushed the lever or climbed over the wall to see their life partner, the fiber-optic sensor “lit up like a rave,” and this continued as the pair snuggled and sniffed each other. By contrast, when the animals encountered a stranger vole, the fiber had a dim response.</p>



<p>“This suggests that not only is dopamine really important for motivating us to seek out our partner, but there’s actually more dopamine coursing through our reward center when we are with our partner than when we are with a stranger,” said Pierce.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurological-coping-mechanism">Neurological coping mechanism</h2>



<p>The study also sheds light on the brain's coping mechanisms after a breakup. In a separate experiment, voles were separated from their partners for an extended period of time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When the pairs reunited, there was almost no dopamine activity. “We think of this as sort of a reset within the brain that allows the animal to now go on and potentially form a new bond,” said Donaldson.</p>



<p>This discovery offers hope for humans experiencing heartbreak or loss, hinting at a natural brain mechanism that guards against prolonged unrequited love.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts emphasize that more research is needed to determine how these results translate to humans. However, they believe their study could ultimately have important implications for people who either have trouble forming close relationships or those who struggle to get over loss – a condition known as prolonged grief disorder.</p>



<p>“The hope is that by understanding what healthy bonds look like within the brain, we can begin to identify new therapies to help the many people with mental illnesses that affect their social world,” said Donaldson.<br></p>

Despite naming 74 new plants and 15 fungi last year, these 10 discoveries stand out for their uniqueness and peculiarities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings span from explosive orchids on dormant volcanoes to underground flowering plants, highlighting species from various corners of the globe, including Borneo's jungles and Antarctica's icy wilderness. However, concerns arise as some of these species are already facing the threat of extinction.</p>

<p>The Aeranthes bigibbum, found in Madagascar, is particularly remarkable because it is found only in a small nature reserve. This reserve, managed by local villagers, is primarily focused on protecting the Helmet vanga, a rare bird with a distinctive blue beak. The income generated from birdwatchers visiting the reserve helps protect the forest, indirectly saving the orchid.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-explosive-discovery-on-a-dormant-volcano"><strong>An explosive discovery on a dormant volcano</strong></h2>



<p>The Dendrobium lancilabium subspecies wuryae, a striking red orchid, was an unexpected find on Mount Nok, a dormant volcano on Indonesia's Waigeo Island. The researchers were originally searching for a blue orchid not seen for decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nine-species-of-australian-tobacco"><strong>Nine species of Australian tobacco </strong></h2>



<p>Researchers discovered nine new species of Nicotiana in Australia, known for its arid climate. These species, part of the tobacco plant family, are adapted to survive in harsh environments. The new plants include N. olens, named for its pleasantly scented flowers.</p>

<p>In Madagascar, a peculiar sticky flower covered with thin hairs, each topped with a drop of dew, was discovered. Named Crepidorhopalon droseroides for its resemblance to carnivorous sundew plants, it belongs to the mint family and may possess insect-eating capabilities.</p>

<p>In the Kalahari's sandy soils of Angola, researchers found two extraordinary tree species that grow mostly underground. The second species, Adjanys Cochlospermum, named after environmental prize-winner Adjany Costa, features beautiful yellow flowers.</p>

<p>The Lichtheimia koreana, part of a heat-loving fungal group, was discovered in soy waste in South Korea. While it belongs to a family with three known human pathogens, this particular species is less likely to pose a threat to human health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-three-new-antarctic-fungi">Three new Antarctic fungi </h2>



<p>Despite the harsh conditions of Antarctica, scientists have found a rich diversity of lichens. The newly discovered fungi species live on these lichens and contribute to the surprising biodiversity of the continent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unusual-underground-palm"><strong>An unusual </strong>underground<strong> palm </strong></h2>



<p>The Pinanga subterranea is a unique palm from Borneo that fruits and flowers entirely underground, a rare trait previously observed only in a single orchid species. Though new to science, this palm is well-known to some local Bornean communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-endangered-thai-violet">An endangered Thai violet</h2>



<p>A new species from the Microchirita family, with small yellow flowers known locally as Yat neramit, is already considered endangered. Found only in two unprotected sites in Thailand, the Microchirita fuscifaucia is threatened due to its limited habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-indigo-bearing-shrub">An indigo-bearing shrub </h2>



<p>The newly discovered Indigofera abbottii, named after conservationist Anthony Dixon Abbot, is part of a family known for blue dye-producing plants. Found in South Africa, this species adds to the diverse Indigofera genus, which has various uses and ecological roles.</p>



<p>Dr. Martin Cheek of Kew's Africa Team underscores the importance of documenting these new plants. “Without doing so, we risk losing these species without ever even knowing they existed,” he said. These findings highlight the incredible diversity of plant life and the need for conservation efforts to protect these unique species and their habitats.</p>

<p>Their findings underscore the significant yet underrecognized impacts this trend has on economies and societies worldwide.</p>



<p>The physicians note a startling forecast: excluding migration, many countries might see their populations halve between 2017 and 2100. </p>



<p>By 2050, 77% of predominantly high-income countries, and by 2100, a staggering 93% of all nations, are projected to have fertility rates below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-perspective-on-fertility">A global perspective on fertility</h2>



<p>This team of experts includes fertility specialists from diverse <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childbirth-rates-vary-greatly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nations</a>, including Australia, Chile, Denmark, Egypt, Greece, The Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cdc-total-fertility-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">United States</a>, ensuring a global perspective on the issue.</p>



<p>With underpopulation looming as a critical concern, the paper presents a suite of recommendations for governments, policymakers, companies, healthcare professionals, and patients to combat infertility risks and improve the affordability and accessibility of fertility care.</p>



<p>Bart CJM Fauser, co-first author of the paper and IFFS Scientific Director, emphasizes the human right to family building. He highlights the challenges in accessing fertility care, noting its often prohibitive costs and limited availability. </p>



<p>“Choosing to have a family is a human right,” said Fauser. “But access to fertility care is often unaffordable, inaccessible, and inequitable and that needs to change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disparities-in-access-and-human-rights">Disparities in access and human rights</h2>



<p>The paper points out significant advancements in fertility treatments over the past three decades, benefiting infertile couples, singles, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. However, disparities in access and equity persist globally.</p>



<p>Edgar Mocanu, IFFS President, offers a silver lining: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-population-could-peak-below-nine-million-by-2050/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infertility</a> is often preventable. He advocates for comprehensive education on fertility and contraception, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about family planning.</p>



<p>“The good news is that infertility is often preventable,” said Mocanu. “A simple step is offering balanced fertility and contraceptive education so that everybody can decide when to prevent pregnancy and when it is ideal for them to start a family, if they choose.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-infertility-with-a-multifaceted-approach">Addressing infertility with a multifaceted approach</h2>



<p>The paper addresses the alarming prevalence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-may-be-linked-to-female-fertility-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infertility</a>, affecting one in six individuals of reproductive age, with both sexes equally impacted. </p>



<p>Factors such as sexually transmitted infections, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/e-cigarette-fertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smoking</a>, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, and poor nutrition contribute to decreased fertility in both sexes. </p>



<p>Additionally, environmental factors like air pollution and unregulated chemicals pose increasing risks.</p>



<p>The authors propose several solutions to bolster birth rates, including policy measures supporting families and working women. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disparity-in-art-services">Disparity in ART services</h2>



<p>These encompass extended pregnancy leave compensation, childcare, parental leave, and broader access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) services.</p>



<p>Dr. Luca Gianaroli, IFFS Director of Education, notes the disparity in ART access. While some wealthy countries report over 10% of children born through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mediterranean-diet-improves-sperm-quality-and-fertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertility</a> assistance, the high costs and varying availability remain barriers worldwide. </p>



<p>“While more than 10 percent of all children are born with fertility assistance in some wealthy countries, there is great variation in access to care and the high cost remains a barrier across the board,” said Dr. Gianaroli. </p>



<p>He calls for more countries to consider public funding for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-intelligent-men-tend-to-become-fathers-later-in-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertility</a> treatments as a response to declining birth rates.</p>



<p>“A limited number of countries have started public funding of fertility treatment to mitigate falling birth rates, and the IFFS is asking that more countries consider providing financial assistance for individuals needing fertility care,” Gianaroli explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-increase-global-fertility-rates">How to increase  global fertility rates</h2>



<p>The paper concludes with four primary action items, forming the backbone of their 'More Joy' global awareness and education campaign:</p>

<li>Develop policies to reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humanity-is-facing-a-reproduction-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infertility</a> risk factors and enhance the affordability, accessibility, and equity of fertility care.<br></li>



<li>Create simpler, less intensive, and more cost-effective assisted reproductive technologies.<br></li>



<li>Educate patients about infertility prevention and incorporate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-sperm-structure-offers-new-insights-on-infertility/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertility awareness</a> into family planning and contraceptive education.<br></li>



<li>Improve infrastructure and support to expand care access, especially in low-resource countries.</li>
</ol>

<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

Recent scientific discoveries are revolutionizing our understanding of this peculiar human behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. <p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>



<p>When someone else tickles you, your brain can't predict their movements, so the full tickling response activates. It's like your brain's way of distinguishing between self and others.</p>

<p>Dr. Konstantina Kilteni's 2025 research, published in <em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt0350" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a></em>, reveals another technique: place your hand on the tickler's hand. This allows your brain to partially predict the sensations, reducing the tickling response by up to 90 percent.</p>



<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
