<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>While it's well-known that excessive alcohol consumption harms many organs, including the liver, brain, and heart, a paradox exists. About 50 years ago, studies began to suggest that moderate drinking might be beneficial for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/every-move-counts-even-minimal-activity-can-boost-heart-health/">heart</a>.</p>



<p>Moderate drinking is quantified as one to two drinks per day for a man, and one drink per day for a woman. Here, a "drink" is defined as either a shot (1.5 ounces) of spirits, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or a 12-ounce bottle of beer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heart-and-health-benefits">Heart and health benefits</h2>



<p>The notion of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-drinking-increases-the-buildup-of-ectopic-fat-around-the-heart-and-liver/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart</a> benefits from moderate drinking emerges from observational research involving hundreds of thousands of participants. These studies have closely monitored individuals' drinking patterns and health over several decades. </p>



<p>Participants were classified as non-drinkers, moderate drinkers, and more-than-moderate drinkers. Over time, it was observed that moderate drinkers had lower rates of coronary artery disease, including fewer heart attacks, compared to the other groups.</p>



<p>"That makes sense, since other studies have found that moderate drinking causes 'good' cholesterol to rise and blood to clot a bit less easily - both of which could explain a lower rate of heart attacks," explained Dr. Anthony Komaroff, an internal medicine specialist and editor-in-chief of the <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/is-moderate-drinking-heart-healthy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard Health Letter</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studies-of-moderate-drinking">Studies of moderate drinking</h2>



<p>However, observational studies are not without limitations. If such a study finds that moderate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-alcohol-has-a-significant-negative-impact-on-a-fathers-sperm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinkers</a> have a lower incidence of heart disease, it doesn't necessarily imply that moderate drinking is the direct cause. There could be other, unmeasured variables involved. </p>



<p>For instance, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moderate-alcohol-consumption-does-not-increase-risk-of-early-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moderate</a> drinkers may engage in other unknown heart-healthy practices, or non-drinkers might possess a gene that increases their risk of heart disease and also affects their alcohol tolerance.</p>



<p>"Good observational studies do their best to take account of all the factors that might affect an outcome," said Dr. Komaroff. "Unfortunately, they can't be done perfectly, and they can't take account of risk factors that have not yet been discovered."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-randomized-controlled-trials">Randomized controlled trials</h2>



<p>To definitively prove the benefits of any treatment or practice, including moderate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-may-amplify-alcohol-and-drug-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinking</a>, randomized controlled trials are needed. These trials involve randomly assigning participants to different groups to isolate the effect of the treatment or practice. </p>



<p>However, it is challenging to conduct trials on nutritional practices like moderate drinking due to difficulties in participant adherence and long-term monitoring.</p>



<p>Recent studies have cast doubt on the evidence that moderate drinking reduces the risk of heart disease. This doesn't negate past studies, but adds complexity to the existing body of research.</p>



<p>As it stands, the evidence suggests that while moderate drinking may offer some heart benefits, it should not be recommended solely for achieving these potential benefits. On the contrary, excessive drinking is undeniably harmful, causing multiple health issues, including heart problems.</p>



<p>"We all wish science could provide definitive and permanent answers to important questions, but that is rarely the case," said Dr. Komaroff. "The best that we can do is give you our current assessment of how we weigh the sometimes-conflicting evidence. Stay tuned!"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recent-moderate-drinking-research">Recent moderate drinking research</h2>



<p>In a separate report, researchers at <a href="https://www.massgeneral.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts General Hospital</a> have made a breakthrough in understanding why light to moderate alcohol consumption might be beneficial for heart health.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Published in the <a href="https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.2023.04.015" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology</em></a>, the study reveals a link between alcohol consumption and reduced stress signaling in the brain, which may lower the risk of heart disease.</p>



<p>This impact appeared to significantly account for the reductions in heart disease risk seen in light to moderate drinkers participating in the study, noted the researchers.</p>



<p>"We are not advocating the use of alcohol to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes because of other concerning effects of alcohol on health,” said study senior author and cardiologist Ahmed Tawakol.</p>



<p>“We wanted to understand how light to moderate drinking reduces cardiovascular disease, as demonstrated by multiple other studies. And if we could find the mechanism, the goal would be to find other approaches that could replicate or induce alcohol’s protective cardiac effects without the adverse impacts of alcohol.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-substantial-risk-reduction">Substantial risk reduction</h2>



<p>The research involved over 50,000 participants from the Mass General Brigham Biobank. The results showed that light to moderate drinking is linked to a substantial reduction in cardiovascular disease risk. This finding persisted even after adjusting for genetic, clinical, lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors.</p>



<p>A subset of 754 individuals underwent PET/CT brain imaging, primarily for cancer surveillance, to examine the effect of light/moderate alcohol consumption on stress-related neural network activity. </p>



<p>The imaging revealed reduced stress signaling in the amygdala - a brain region associated with stress responses - in light to moderate drinkers compared to those who abstained or drank little.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"When the amygdala is too alert and vigilant, the sympathetic nervous system is heightened, which drives up blood pressure and increases heart rate, and triggers the release of inflammatory cells,” explained Tawakol. </p>



<p>“If the stress is chronic, the result is hypertension, increased inflammation, and a substantial risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-interventions">New interventions</h2>



<p>The experts also discovered that while light to moderate drinking lowered the risk for cardiovascular disease, any amount of alcohol increased the risk of cancer. Furthermore, excessive drinking (more than 14 drinks a week) raised heart attack risk and decreased overall brain activity, potentially affecting cognitive health.</p>



<p>Given these findings, Tawakol and his team propose that future research should focus on new interventions that reduce brain stress activity without alcohol's harmful effects.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team is currently exploring the impact of exercise, stress-reduction techniques like meditation, and pharmacological therapies on stress-associated neural networks, aiming to induce similar cardiovascular benefits.</p>

<p>Imagine a remarkable creature, a flying dragon that doesn't spout fire, but has the incredible abilities of a firefighter, able to extinguish it with powerful blasts of water. </p>



<p>Thanks to a team of Japanese researchers, this futuristic beast, known as the Dragon Firefighter, may soon join firefighting teams worldwide to tackle fires that are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/firefighters-increased-risk-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">too hazardous</a> for human intervention. </p>



<p>The blueprint of this extraordinary robot was unveiled this week, allowing roboticists everywhere to access and utilize the plans for the benefit of all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-designing-the-dragon-firefighter">Designing the Dragon Firefighter</h2>



<p>The Dragon Firefighter is a remotely controllable flying firehose robot, measuring an impressive four meters in length. Its purpose is to safely and efficiently extinguish fires within buildings by directly approaching the fire sources. </p>



<p>“We here present a prototype of a four-meter-long, remotely controllable flying firehose robot, engineered to safely and efficiently extinguish fires in buildings by directly approaching the fire sources,” said joint corresponding author Dr Yuichi Ambe, an assistant professor at <a href="https://www.osaka-u.ac.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osaka University</a>.</p>



<p>The remarkable journey of the Dragon Firefighter began at Prof. Satoshi Tadokoro's laboratory at Tohoku University in 2016. Since then, a team of 11 dedicated researchers and students has contributed to further developing this innovative robot. </p>



<p>Throughout the development process, close collaboration with Japanese firefighters has helped refine the Dragon Firefighter to better meet their specific needs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-firefighting-power-of-the-dragon">Firefighting power of the Dragon</h2>



<p>The Dragon Firefighter's firehose is propelled upward, flying at a height of two meters above the ground, by eight controllable jets of water emanating from its center and head. </p>



<p>This flexible firehose can change shape and be directed toward flames with the help of a control unit stationed in a wheeled cart behind the robot. The cart is connected to a fire truck that carries a water reservoir of 14,000 liters through a supply tube.</p>



<p>The nozzles of the firehose emit water at an impressive rate of 6.6 liters per second, with a pressure of up to one megapascal. To aid in locating the fire, the hose's tip is equipped with both conventional and thermal imaging cameras, offering a comprehensive view of the surroundings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-successful-demonstration">Successful demonstration</h2>



<p>The Dragon Firefighter demonstrated its capabilities at the opening ceremony of the World Robot Summit 2020 (WRS2020), held in Fukushima in September 2021. </p>



<p>The robot triumphantly <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJankj0VYNg&amp;t" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinguished a ceremonial flame</a> composed of fireballs ignited by another robot at a distance of four meters. This successful demonstration not only showcased the Dragon's design but also provided valuable insights and lessons for further improvements.</p>



<p>Since the demonstration at WRS2020, the team, including Dr. Yu Yamauchi, an assistant professor at Akita Prefectural University and another corresponding author, has been working diligently to enhance the Dragon Firefighter and expand its capabilities. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-the-dragon-firefighter">Improving the Dragon Firefighter</h2>



<p>Dr Yu Yamauchi, an assistant professor at <a href="https://www.akita-pu.ac.jp/language/EN/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Akita Prefectural University</a> and another corresponding author, said, “Since the demonstration at WRS2020, we have continued to work on improving our Dragon and have learned many new things.”</p>



<p>“For example, we found that the original passive dampening mechanism which counters oscillations of the Dragon Firefighter’s body was impractical: it took too long to prepare for flight," Yamauchi continued. "We also found that heat from fires can cause detrimental plastic deformation in outdoor applications of the corrugated tube that holds the water hose and electric cables.”</p>



<p>Key improvements discussed in the study include enhanced waterproofing, a nozzle unit capable of handling a wider range of net forces, and an improved mechanism for channeling water flow.</p>



<p>Furthermore, Dr. Ambe estimates that it will take approximately 10 more years to deploy the robot in real-world firefighting scenarios. The primary challenge lies in extending its reach beyond 10 meters. Developing effective firefighting tactics tailored to the unique capabilities of the Dragon Firefighter will also be a critical aspect of further development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-future-holds">What the future holds</h2>



<p>The Dragon Firefighter represents a remarkable feat of robotics, with its transformative potential to address dangerous fires and protect human lives. </p>



<p>With its publication as Open Science, the plans for building the Dragon Firefighter are freely accessible to roboticists worldwide, making collective progress in the development of this extraordinary robot possible. </p>



<p>As Dr. Ambe aptly states, "We estimate that it will take approximately 10 more years to deploy our robot in real-world firefighting scenarios. The primary challenge will be to extend its reach beyond 10 meters. Developing effective firefighting tactics tailored to this robot's unique capabilities will likewise be a critical aspect of further development." </p>

<p>Scientists have unraveled the mystery behind millions of crater-like ocean pits, known as pockmarks, scattered across the ocean floor worldwide, particularly in the North Sea.</p>



<p>These formations were believed to be the result of fluid discharges such as methane or groundwater. The ocean pits have now been linked to the behavior of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-waste-may-be-disrupting-the-sex-lives-of-marine-animals/">marine vertebrates</a> like porpoises and sand eels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-connection">Surprising connection </h2>



<p>The study was led by Dr. Jens Schneider von Deimling of <a href="https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kiel University</a> in collaboration with researchers from various other institutions. </p>



<p>The team identified a surprising connection between these ocean pits and the hunting patterns of porpoises. </p>



<p>"Our results show for the first time that these depressions occur in direct connection with the habitat and behavior of porpoises and sand eels and are not formed by rising fluids," said Dr. von Deimling. </p>



<p>"Our high-resolution data provide a new interpretation for the formation of tens of thousands of pits on the North Sea seafloor."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-ocean-pits">Studying the ocean pits</h2>



<p>The research team, which included experts from the <a href="https://www.awi.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfred Wegener Institute</a> and the <a href="https://www.tiho-hannover.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover</a>, meticulously examined the North Sea floor near Heligoland. </p>



<p>In the medical realm, pockmarks are well known as deep scars on the skin and are obviously of biogenic nature. In geoscience, pockmarks are referred to as cone-shaped depressions in the seabed. </p>



<p>"Geologic pockmarks are traditionally believed to result from fluid (i.e., gas or liquid) venting with erosive agents emerging from beneath the seabed," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>The high-resolution data not only provide a new interpretation for the formation of tens of thousands of pits on the floor of the North Sea, but also suggest that the underlying mechanisms might be a global phenomenon that has been overlooked until now.</p>



<p>They were first observed in the 1970s within clastic sediments offshore Nova Scotia, Canada. Now, about five decades after their initial discovery, it has become clear that pockmarks are among the most widespread morphologic features in the oceans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-pits-and-the-role-of-sand-eels">Ocean pits and the role of sand eels</h2>



<p>Dr. Anita Gilles from the <a href="https://www.tiho-hannover.de/en/clinics-institutes/institutes/institute-of-terrestrial-and-aquatic-wildlife-research-itaw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TiHo-Institute</a> for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research highlighted the significance of sand eels in this context. Being a crucial food source for the North Sea porpoise population, the sand eels inadvertently contribute to the creation of the ocean pits. </p>



<p>"From analyses of the stomach contents of stranded porpoises, we know that sand eels are an important food source for the North Sea population", says Dr Gilles.</p>



<p>Porpoises, while hunting for eels buried in shallow sediments, leave behind pits. Although these depressions resemble pockmarks, they are much shallower.</p>



<p>The detection and analysis of these seabed depressions have been made possible through advanced multibeam echosounder technology.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The formation mechanism of these pits, as we call them, probably also explains the existence of numerous crater-like depressions on the seafloor worldwide, which have been misinterpreted as the result of methane gas leaks," said Dr. von Deimling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the North Sea alone, researchers identified 42,458 of these uniquely shaped, shallow pits. This discovery contradicts the previous belief that the depressions were primarily caused by rising fluids.</p>



<p>"Our results have far-reaching implications from a geological and biological perspective. They can help to assess the ecological risks associated with the expansion of renewable energies in the offshore sector and thus improve marine environmental protection," said Dr. von Deimling.</p>

<p>These crystals, often found in high-level clouds, bend sunlight or moonlight, resulting in a variety of stunning optical effects, including rings, arcs, and spots in the sky. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-formation-of-ice-halos">Formation of ice halos</h2>



<p>The formation of ice halos hinges on the presence of tiny, hexagonally-shaped ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. </p>



<p>These crystals act like prisms and mirrors, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-da-vinci-glow-will-illuminate-tonights-crescent-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bending and reflecting light</a>. The specific shape and orientation of the crystals determine the type of halo observed.</p>



<p>When light passes through these ice crystals, it refracts or bends at specific angles. The most common angle is 22 degrees, which results in the well-known 22-degree halo. </p>



<p>However, other types of halos can form at different angles, depending on the ice crystal's shape and orientation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-types-of-ice-halos">Types of ice halos</h2>



<p>The 22-degree halo is a circular ring surrounding the sun or moon. It forms when light refracts through the hexagonal ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds.</p>



<p>Sundogs, or parahelia, are bright, colored spots on either side of the sun, often seen as part of the 22-degree halo. They occur when sunlight refracts through ice crystals with a vertical orientation.</p>



<p>Circumzenithal arcs  are vividly colored, resembling an upside-down rainbow. They appear when sunlight refracts through horizontally oriented ice crystals high in the sky.</p>



<p>Light pillars appear as vertical columns of light extending above or below a light source, usually the sun or streetlights. They form in very cold conditions when flat ice crystals reflect light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-this-phenomenon">Observing this phenomenon</h2>



<p>Ice halos are best observed when the sky is filled with cirrostratus clouds. These high-altitude clouds are thin and contain the ice crystals necessary for halo formation.</p>



<p>To safely observe ice halos, never look directly at the sun. Use polarized sunglasses to enhance the visibility of halos around the sun. For moonlit halos, a clear, crisp night is ideal.</p>



<p>Meteorologists often use the presence of ice halos as indicators of approaching weather fronts. The ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds can signify the advance of a warm front, potentially leading to precipitation.</p>



<p>Ice halos are not only a stunning natural spectacle but also a fascinating subject for scientific study. <p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-hubble-image-captures-two-merging-galaxies-in-arp-107/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seyfert galaxies</a>, nestled alongside quasars in the celestial tapestry, represent a significant group within the AGN family. </p>

<p>But here’s the twist: forbidden emission lines are, by Earth-based quantum physics standards, highly improbable – so much so that they're often dismissed in laboratory settings. </p>



<p>However, the cosmos plays by different rules. In the highly energetic core of a Seyfert galaxy, these ‘forbidden’ emissions find their stage, defying our earthly expectations and shining their unique light across the vast expanse of space.</p>

<p>In a study that challenges long-standing assumptions, researchers have uncovered surprising insights into the nesting success of wild turkeys. </p>



<p>Contrary to popular belief, researchers from <a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Carolina State University</a> discovered that rainfall during nesting season may not be as crucial to their reproductive success as previously thought. This revelation opens new avenues for understanding how climate change could impact these fascinating birds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weather-and-wild-turkey-nesting-success">Weather and wild turkey nesting success</h2>



<p>The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of weather conditions during nesting season on wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turkey-domestication-happened-least-1500-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turkey</a> reproductive success and to extrapolate these findings to assess the potential impact of climate change on turkey populations. </p>



<p>Wesley Boone, corresponding author and postdoctoral researcher at North Carolina State University, explains, "We wanted to know how weather influences nesting success right now and then use that data to assess how climate change may influence wild turkey populations in the future."</p>



<p>Wild turkeys, known for their adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions, face numerous factors that can affect their reproductive success. </p>



<p>This study focused specifically on two critical environmental conditions: precipitation and temperature. The goal was to understand their influence on nest survival during the incubation period. </p>



<p>“Wild turkeys are fairly tolerant of a wide range of conditions, but there are a host of factors that can affect their reproductive success,” says Chris Moorman, co-author of the study and a professor of forestry and environmental resources at NC&nbsp;State. “This work focused on two of those conditions, precipitation and temperature, and how they may influence nest survival during the incubation period.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-methodology-and-results">Study methodology and results</h2>



<p>To investigate the impact of weather conditions on wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-turkeys-struggle-to-shift-their-behavior-in-response-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turkey</a> nesting success, researchers closely examined daily nest survival, which measures whether the eggs within a nest survive over a 24-hour period. </p>



<p>Over a span of eight years, the team monitored 715 turkey nests, meticulously collecting daily data on precipitation and temperature throughout the entire incubation period. With temperature, researchers analyzed the variations between nest temperatures and historical averages.</p>



<p>The study's most astonishing discovery was that precipitation during nesting had no significant correlation with daily nest survival. This finding contradicts the widely held belief that increased rainfall heightens the chances of egg mortality. </p>



<p>“The most surprising finding was that precipitation during nesting was not a good predictor of daily nest survival,” Moorman says. “It had been widely believed that particularly rainy weather made it more likely that eggs wouldn’t survive.”</p>



<p>Surprisingly, the data revealed that higher temperatures, exceeding historical averages, were correlated with enhanced daily nest survival during the incubation period. As peak nesting season typically falls in April, this finding specifically refers to warmer-than-average spring weather. </p>



<p>“We also found that temperatures which were higher than historical averages were associated with higher rates of daily nest survival during incubation,” says Boone. “Peak nesting season is generally in April, so we’re talking about warmer than average spring weather.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wild-turkey-nesting-success-is-complicated">Wild turkey nesting success is complicated</h2>



<p>While the initial findings seem to suggest that climate change might favor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/10-things-turkeys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wild turkey</a> reproductive success and, consequently, population growth, a more in-depth analysis reveals the complexity of this relationship. </p>



<p>“Taken by itself, this might suggest that climate change could benefit turkey reproductive success and, by extension, turkey populations,” Moorman says. </p>



<p>“However, we also looked at precipitation and temperature data for the months leading up to nesting season, and at the overall likelihood that a turkey nest will successfully hatch at least one egg. And when we looked at both of those datasets, things get a lot less clear,” Moorman continued.</p>



<p>The researchers also investigated precipitation and temperature data for the months leading up to nesting season and examined the overall likelihood of successful hatching for individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/troublemaking-turkeys-boston/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turkey</a> nests. This cumulative analysis proves considerably less conclusive.</p>



<p>The data suggests that higher levels of precipitation in January, well before nesting season, are associated with increased nest survival rates. Conversely, higher January temperatures appear to have a negative impact on nesting survival. </p>



<p>However, due to the considerable uncertainty surrounding these findings, it is unclear whether a definitive relationship exists or if these observations are merely anomalies. </p>



<p>“For example, the data suggest that more precipitation in January – long before nesting season – is associated with greater nest survival,” Boone elaborates. </p>



<p>“The data also suggest that higher temperatures in January are associated with worse nesting survival. But there is so much uncertainty related to those findings that it’s not clear whether there’s a real relationship there, or if it’s an anomaly. However, it does temper any enthusiasm we might have about the likelihood that climate change will benefit turkey populations,” Boone concluded</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-wild-turkey-conservation">Implications for wild turkey conservation</h2>



<p>While this study challenges the prevailing assumption regarding the influence of precipitation on wild turkey nesting success, it offers a new perspective on how climate change may affect these populations. </p>



<p>The findings show that the intricate interplay between weather conditions and reproductive success requires further investigation. Understanding the nuances of this relationship is crucial for effective wildlife conservation strategies in the face of climate change.</p>



<p>In summary this study serves as a reminder of the complexities of ecological systems and the impact that climate change can have on wildlife populations. By delving into the intricate dynamics of wild turkey nesting patterns, researchers are striving to safeguard these iconic birds and inform conservation efforts in an ever-changing world.</p>

Conducted by Shani Agron at the <a href="https://www.weizmann.ac.il/pages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Weizmann Institute of Science</a> in Israel, the research reveals that chemicals in women’s tears have the ability to diminish <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childhood-aggression-environment/">aggression</a> in men.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the experiment, the men engaged in a two-person game designed to provoke aggressive responses against a perceived cheating opponent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The opportunity for revenge presented itself in the form of financial loss for the other player. Importantly, the men could not differentiate between the tears and saline, as both were odorless.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights">Key insights</h2>



<p>The results were striking: men exhibited more than a 40 percent decrease in aggressive behavior after inhaling women’s emotional tears.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Further insights were gained through functional MRI imaging, which showed reduced activity in two aggression-related brain regions - the prefrontal cortex and anterior insula - when the men smelled the tears, compared to the saline. This diminished brain activity correlated with a decreased likelihood of the men seeking revenge in the game.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study’s findings suggest that social chemosignaling plays a significant role in modulating human aggression, a concept previously considered more relevant to animal behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found that just like in mice, human tears contain a chemical signal that blocks conspecific male aggression. This goes against the notion that emotional tears are uniquely human,” the authors wrote.</p>



<p>Thus, this research not only sheds light on the complex interplay between human emotions, biochemistry, and behavior but also challenges the long-held belief that emotional tears are a uniquely human trait.</p>

MIT's vibrating <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/obesity-treatment_vibrating-ingestible-capsule_Credit-Shriya-Srinivasan_MIT_1medium.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">capsule</a> exploits this phenomenon.</p>



<p>In animal tests, administering this pill 20 minutes before eating not only prompted satiety hormones but also cut food consumption by about 40 percent. </p>



<p>While much remains to be understood about body weight control in humans, this technology, if proven safe for human use, could provide a non-invasive obesity treatment, the researchers suggest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-satiety-and-hunger">Science behind satiety and hunger</h2>



<p>Shriya Srinivasan PhD ’20, now an assistant professor of bioengineering at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a>, suggests that individuals looking to control their appetite or lose weight could use this pill before meals. </p>



<p>“For somebody who wants to lose weight or control their appetite, it could be taken before each meal,” says Srinivasan. “This could be really interesting in that it would provide an option that could minimize the side effects that we see with the other pharmacological treatments out there.” </p>



<p>Srinivasan, the lead author of this study, collaborated with Giovanni Traverso, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT and a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Their findings are published today in Science Advances.</p>



<p>Our stomachs play a crucial role in regulating hunger and fullness. When stretched, specialized cells called mechanoreceptors detect this expansion and signal the brain through the vagus nerve. </p>



<p>This leads to the production of insulin and hormones like C-peptide, Pyy, and GLP-1, which aid in digestion, induce fullness, and curb eating. Concurrently, ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger, decreases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-obesity-with-a-vibrating-capsule">Fighting obesity with a vibrating capsule</h2>



<p>While at MIT, Shriya Srinivasan delved into the potential of artificially stimulating these mechanoreceptors to control hunger. Her curiosity stemmed from previous studies indicating that vibrating muscles can create an illusion of more substantial stretching.</p>



<p>“I wondered if we could activate stretch receptors in the stomach by vibrating them and having them perceive that the entire stomach has been expanded, to create an illusory sense of distension that could modulate hormones and eating patterns,” Srinivasan explains.</p>



<p>During her postdoc at MIT's <a href="https://ki.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Koch Institute</a> for Integrative Cancer Research, Srinivasan joined forces with Giovanni Traverso’s lab, renowned for pioneering drug delivery and electronic devices. Their collaboration birthed a capsule, roughly the size of a multivitamin, equipped with a vibrating element. </p>



<p>Powered by a small silver oxide battery, it springs to action in the stomach when a gelatinous membrane dissolves in gastric fluids, completing an electronic circuit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impressive-results-from-animal-studies">Impressive results from animal studies</h2>



<p>The team's animal studies revealed significant findings. The vibrating capsule activated mechanoreceptors, mimicking the hormonal response of a meal, even during fasting. </p>



<p>More strikingly, when activated for about 20 minutes before feeding, the animals ate 40% less than without the capsule, also gaining weight more slowly.</p>



<p>“The behavioral change is profound, and that's using the endogenous system rather than any exogenous therapeutic. We have the potential to overcome some of the challenges and costs associated with delivery of biologic drugs by modulating the enteric nervous system,” Traverso says. </p>



<p>Currently designed to vibrate for 30 minutes in the stomach, future adaptations may extend this duration, offering wireless control. The animal studies confirmed the pill's safe passage through the digestive system within four or five days, without adverse effects like obstruction or perforation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vibrating-capsule-clinical-trials-are-next">Vibrating capsule clinical trials are next</h2>



<p>This innovation could revolutionize obesity treatment. Traditional methods, such as diet and exercise, aren't universally effective, and existing medical interventions are often invasive or costly. By contrast, the MIT capsule could be manufactured affordably, making it accessible to broader populations.</p>



<p>“For a lot of populations, some of the more effective therapies for obesity are very costly. At scale, our device could be manufactured at a pretty cost-effective price point,” Srinivasan highlights. </p>



<p>"I'd love to see how this would transform care and therapy for people in global health settings who may not have access to some of the more sophisticated or expensive options that are available today."</p>



<p>The team's focus now shifts to scaling up manufacturing for human clinical trials. These studies are crucial for assessing safety and optimizing usage parameters, such as timing and frequency relative to meals.</p>



<p>In summary, the MIT capsule represents a novel, non-invasive approach to managing obesity, offering hope for more accessible and effective treatments in the future.</p>

<p>"While the ecological impacts of large scale accidental releases such as the Kingston coal ash spill are well documented, little is known about the effects of chronic exposure to contamination stemming from leaking repositories," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings">Key findings</h2>



<p>The research was focused on areas surrounding five coal ash facilities in Virginia. The results were alarming. Coal ash, a common industrial waste in the U.S., contains several water-soluble metals such as cadmium, selenium, mercury, lead, and arsenic.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts found that there were significantly increased levels of these metals in the sediments at the bottoms of waterways and within the tissues of banded killifish living near the coal ash landfills.</p>



<p>"These waterways serve as important routes for several migratory fish species and sensitive nursery habitats for various endemic species," said Dr. Frankel. "Our work highlights the importance of considering this exposure pathway in conservation strategies."&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The health implications of these findings are severe. Long-term exposure to metals like arsenic, cadmium, and chromium is linked to cancer, cardiovascular risks, and other health issues in both wildlife and humans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Imagine a creature so small that it fits on your pinkie nail, yet so remarkable that it can regrow an amputated tentacle in just a few days. This is the reality for the jellyfish species <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/jellyfish_Cladonema-pacificum_tentacles_University-of-Tokyo_1medium-1.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cladonema</a></em>, a subject of fascination in the scientific community due to its extraordinary regenerative abilities. </p>



<p>Until recently, the mechanisms behind this rapid healing remained a puzzle. Now, an intriguing study by a Japanese research team offers unprecedented insights into this process, transforming our understanding of regeneration across species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stem-like-cells-help-jellyfish-regenerate">Stem-like cells help jellyfish regenerate</h2>



<p>The team's discovery uncovers the role of special stem-like cells in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-the-immortal-jellyfish-teach-us-how-to-reverse-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> regeneration. These cells, found at the injury site, are pivotal in forming a blastema -- a cluster of undifferentiated cells essential for tissue repair. </p>



<p>This finding is significant because, unlike salamanders and insects that rely on similar processes, the exact nature of blastema formation in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jellyfish-are-capable-of-more-complex-learning-than-ever-imagined/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> and related cnidarians like corals and sea anemones was unknown.</p>



<p>According to Yuichiro Nakajima, a lecturer at the <a href="https://www.f.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tokyo</a>'s Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the study's corresponding author, these stem-like cells differ from the resident stem cells in the jellyfish tentacles. </p>



<p>“Importantly, these stem-like proliferative cells in blastema are different from the resident stem cells localized in the tentacle,” said Nakajima. “Repair-specific proliferative cells mainly contribute to the epithelium -- the thin outer layer -- of the newly formed tentacle.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-cellular-roles-discovered">Distinct cellular roles discovered</h2>



<p>While resident stem cells are responsible for generating various cell types during the organism's life, the newly identified cells are specialized to repair and regenerate, contributing mainly to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jellyfish-shed-light-on-the-origins-of-hunger-regulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> tentacle's outer layer.</p>



<p>This distinction is crucial, as Nakajima points out. It's the synergy between the resident stem cells and these repair-specific cells that enables the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/larger-jellyfish-are-more-nutritious/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> to swiftly regenerate a functional tentacle, a vital organ for hunting and feeding.</p>



<p>“Together, resident stem cells and repair-specific proliferative cells allow rapid regeneration of the functional tentacle within a few days,” Nakajima said, noting that jellyfish use their tentacles to hunt and feed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-cladonema-jellyfish">Broader implications of <em>Cladonema</em> jellyfish</h2>



<p>Sosuke Fujita, the study's first author and a postdoctoral researcher in Nakajima's lab, highlights the broader implications of their work. By studying <em>Cladonema</em> <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jellyfish-eyes-catch-a-glimpse-of-evolutionary-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a>, a non-bilaterian animal, they aim to understand blastema formation from an evolutionary perspective. </p>



<p>“In this study, our aim was to address the mechanism of blastema formation, using the tentacle of cnidarian <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-impacts-helmet-jellyfish-foretell-the-dangers-of-seafloor-mining/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jellyfish</a> <em>Cladonema</em> as a regenerative model in non-bilaterians, or animals that do not form bilaterally -- or left-right -- during embryonic development,” Fujita said, explaining that the work may provide insight from an evolutionary perspective.</p>



<p>Their findings suggest parallels between the jellyfish's repair cells and the restricted stem cells in bilaterian animals like salamanders, hinting at a common regenerative feature evolved independently across different animal groups.</p>



<p>However, the journey doesn't end here. The origin of these repair-specific cells remains a mystery, and current research tools are limited in tracing their lineage.</p>

<p>Nakajima emphasizes the need for advanced genetic tools to delve deeper into <em>Cladonema's</em> cellular dynamics. <p>A team of scientists led by the Smithsonian’s <a href="https://naturalhistory.si.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Museum of Natural History</a> has identified five new species of soft-furred hedgehogs in Southeast Asia. </p>



<p>The discovery highlight the importance of DNA analysis in uncovering the mysteries of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animal-welfare-concerns-more-people-than-climate-change/">animal</a> kingdom.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-museum-specimens-nbsp">Museum specimens&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers used DNA analysis and physical characteristics to describe two previously unknown species of soft-furred hedgehogs and to elevate three subspecies to full species status.</p>



<p>The two new species, Hylomys vorax and H. macarong, are native to the endangered Leuser ecosystem in North Sumatra and Southern Vietnam, respectively.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Intriguingly, these species were identified using museum specimens collected decades ago, stored at the Smithsonian and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soft-furred-hedgehogs">Soft-furred hedgehogs</h2>



<p>Soft-furred hedgehogs, or gymnures, belong to the hedgehog family but lack the characteristic spines. Without the spines of their more well-known cousins, soft-furred hedgehogs superficially look a bit like a mixture of a mouse and a shrew with a short tail, noted Arlo Hinckley, the study’s lead author.</p>



<p>“We were only able to identify these new hedgehogs thanks to museum staff that curated these specimens across countless decades and their original field collectors,” explained Hinckley. “By applying modern genomic techniques like we did many years after these hedgehogs were first collected, the next generation will be able to identify even more new species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lack-of-knowledge-nbsp">Lack of knowledge&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Hinckley said these small mammals are active during the day and night and are omnivorous, likely eating a diversity of insects and other invertebrates as well as some fruits as opportunities present themselves.</p>



<p>“Based on the lifestyles of their close relatives and field observations, these hedgehogs likely nest in hollows and take cover while foraging among tree roots, fallen logs, rocks, grassy areas, undergrowth and leaf litter,” said Hinckley. “But, because they’re so understudied, we are limited to speculate about the details of their natural history.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Hinckley's interest in the Hylomys group started during his doctoral studies in 2016. Subsequent genetic data and studies suggested the existence of more species within this group. This led to a meticulous examination of specimens across several natural history collections worldwide.</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed 232 physical specimens and 85 tissue samples, combining modern and historical museum specimens.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The genetic analysis, conducted at Doñana Biological Station and Smithsonian’s laboratories, revealed seven distinct genetic lineages within Hylomys, pointing to five new species, later confirmed by physical observations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hylomys-species">Hylomys species</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h-macarong">H. macarong</h3>



<p>Named after the Vietnamese word for vampire due to its long, fang-like incisors, this species features dark brown fur and measures about 14 centimeters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h-vorax">H. vorax</h3>



<p>Slightly smaller, with dark brown fur, a black tail, and a very narrow snout, it is found only on Mount Leuser in Northern Sumatra.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h-dorsalis">H. dorsalis</h3>



<p>Native to Northern Borneo, it has a distinct dark stripe on its back and is similar in size to H. macarong.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h-maxi">H. maxi</h3>



<p>Found in the mountains of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, this species also measures about 14 centimeters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h-peguensis">H. peguensis</h3>



<p>Smaller in size, it inhabits mainland Southeast Asia and has slightly yellow-colored fur.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications">Study implications</h2>



<p>Hinckley emphasized the role that such studies play in informing conservation priorities, especially in biodiversity-rich but threatened areas like the Leuser ecosystem.</p>



<p>“This kind of study can help governments and organizations make hard choices about where to prioritize conservation funding to maximize biodiversity."</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
