<p>PFAS - short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances - are so common that they’ve earned the nickname “forever chemicals.” They’re in rain jackets, dental floss, and even the sticky side of a bandage. Too often, they’re also in drinking water.</p>



<p>For years, U.S. contamination maps showed clusters of problem spots in places like California, Michigan, and New England. But those dots didn’t necessarily reveal where PFAS actually are - they only marked where testing had happened.</p>



<p>Now, researchers at Northeastern University’s <a href="https://pfasproject.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS Project Lab</a> have redrawn the picture. Their new analysis suggests that while roughly 2,200 sites have confirmed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-that-eat-forever-chemicals-discovered-in-contaminated-soil/">contamination</a>, as many as 80,000 more are likely polluted but untested.</p>



<p>The result is what the team calls the most complete snapshot yet - a tool designed to help regulators and communities figure out where to look next.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-presumptive-pfas-sites-fill-the-map">Presumptive PFAS sites fill the map</h2>



<p>Because PFAS testing in the U.S. is spotty and often driven by state programs or local advocacy, the “known” map has always been incomplete. </p>



<p>To bridge that gap, the team built a model that flags “presumptive” contamination sites based on what those facilities do. If a type of place is well documented as a PFAS emitter, similar facilities elsewhere likely pose the same risk.</p>



<p>The approach flips the script: instead of waiting for sampling to reveal bad news one neighborhood at a time, it directs investigators toward the most probable sources before problems spread further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-groundwater-reveals-contamination">Groundwater reveals contamination</h2>



<p>When the researchers looked closely at the 2,200 verified sites, the picture was grim. Ninety-four percent of the locations with groundwater data had average PFAS concentrations above accepted regulatory levels.</p>



<p>Kimberly Garrett is the lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow at the PFAS Project Lab.</p>



<p>“We did find that, overall, all of the sites that we knew about had elevated PFAS concentrations that were above health-based guidelines,” said Garrett. "Some were associated with really high values, but they were all associated with unacceptable values.”</p>



<p>That matters for more than just the communities adjacent to those dots. PFAS contamination moves - through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reed-beds-a-sustainable-revolution-in-wastewater-management/">industrial waste</a> streams, municipal wastewater systems, biosolids applied to fields, and rivers that cross county and state lines. Knowing where it likely starts is the key to cutting it off.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foam-linked-to-high-pfas">Foam linked to high PFAS</h2>



<p>To make the presumptive map, the team sorted potential sources into categories. These included airports, military installations, industrial facilities, municipal fire activities, and wastewater treatment plants. They then compared how often and how strongly PFAS turned up.</p>



<p>Three stood out again and again: airports, military sites, and municipal fire activities. The common thread is aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), a firefighting foam historically loaded with PFAS. Foam used in training and emergency response can soak into soil and groundwater or run off into nearby waterways.</p>



<p>“AFFF was consistently connected to the highest average PFAS concentrations,” Garrett said - a pattern researchers and regulators have suspected for years, now mapped at a national scale.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factories-tied-to-pfas-leaks">Factories tied to PFAS leaks</h2>



<p>Beyond firefighting, the lab’s latest updates begin to tease out which industrial operations are most associated with PFAS releases. Metal manufacturing and electronics manufacturing emerged as frequent suspects.</p>



<p>“Metal manufacturers and electronic manufacturers could use a little more scrutiny in that area, especially as we think about making investments in semiconductor manufacturing and things like that,” Garrett said.</p>



<p>The point isn’t to halt innovation; it’s to ensure new industrial growth doesn’t lock in another generation of contamination.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fixing-pfas-starts-upstream">Fixing PFAS starts upstream</h2>



<p>Public conversation around PFAS often zeroes in on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-100-million-americans-exposed-to-contaminated-drinking-water/">drinking water</a> and wastewater utilities - logical endpoints where contamination becomes visible. But those facilities are downstream. </p>



<p>They inherit what industries and other emitters send them. Treating the problem at the end of the pipe is far harder and more expensive than preventing it in the first place.</p>



<p>“Turning off the tap of PFAS starts at the source,” said Garrett. “We can’t discount the industrial contributions to PFAS contamination.”</p>



<p>Phil Brown, the lab’s co-director, frames it as following the waste stream: identify the treatment plant, then look upstream for likely users and manufacturers.</p>



<p>“We can then tell them that they have to cut down their emissions before it gets into our plants,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-triage-plan-for-limited-budgets"><a></a>A triage plan for limited budgets</h2>



<p>Testing is costly, and agencies and utilities have finite staff and funds. The new map is designed with that reality in mind. </p>



<p>By highlighting presumptive hotspots, it helps decision-makers prioritize where sampling will have the biggest payoff. It also indicates where interim protections might be warranted. In some cases, this could mean providing alternative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pfas-forever-chemicals-in-tap-water-linked-to-33-percent-increase-in-cancer-rates/">water</a> sources while testing ramps up.</p>



<p>“We know that resources for testing bodies and regulatory bodies and municipal utilities are very limited,” said Garrett.</p>



<p>“So we hope that our tools can serve as a guide for if a municipality or a state has so much money for testing and they say, what would be the most impactful way to use this? We think that this paper can contribute to those decisions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-scattered-dots-to-a-strategy"><a></a>From scattered dots to a strategy</h2>



<p>PFAS are called forever chemicals because their carbon-fluorine bonds don’t readily break down. That persistence has made them useful - in nonstick coatings, waterproof gear, and industrial processes - and a nightmare to clean up once they escape into the environment.</p>



<p>The Northeastern team’s work doesn’t solve PFAS pollution, but it does something essential: it replaces a misleading patchwork of test results with a forward-looking map of risk.</p>



<p>The takeaway is not simply that PFAS sites are widespread; it’s that the problem has a pattern. Airports, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preparing-u-s-military-bases-for-sea-level-rise/">military bases</a>, and firefighting sites are likely hotspots. Certain industries deserve closer scrutiny. And the most efficient path to safer water starts upstream, before PFAS reach the taps.</p>

<p>In quantum mechanics, particles can exist in multiple states at the same time, defying the logic of everyday experiences. This property, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radical-new-theory-finally-unites-gravity-spacetime-and-the-quantum-realm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> superposition, is the basis for emerging quantum technologies that promise to transform computing, communication, and sensing. </p>



<p>But quantum superpositions face a significant challenge: quantum decoherence. During this process, the delicate superposition of quantum states breaks down when interacting with its surrounding environment.</p>



<p>To unlock the power of chemistry to build complex molecular architectures for practical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> applications, scientists need to understand and control quantum decoherence so that they can design molecules with specific quantum coherence properties. Doing so requires knowing how to rationally modify a molecule’s chemical structure to modulate or mitigate quantum decoherence. </p>



<p>To that end, scientists need to know the “spectral density,” the quantity which summarizes how fast the environment moves and how strongly it interacts with the quantum system.</p>



<p>Until now, quantifying this spectral density in a way that it accurately reflects the intricacies of molecules has remained elusive to theory and experimentation. But a team of scientists has developed a method to extract the spectral density for molecules in solvent using simple resonance Raman experiments—a method that captures the full complexity of chemical environments. </p>



<p>Led by <a href="https://www.sas.rochester.edu/chm/people/faculty/franco-ignacio/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Ignacio Franco</strong></a>, an associate professor of chemistry and of physics at the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>University of Rochester</strong></a>, the team published their findings in the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2309987120" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em><strong>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</strong></em></a>.</p>



<p>Using the extracted spectral density, it is possible not only to understand how fast the decoherence happens but also to determine which part of the chemical environment is mostly responsible for it. As a result, scientists can now map decoherence pathways to connect molecular structure with quantum decoherence.</p>



<p>“Chemistry builds up from the idea that molecular structure determines the chemical and physical properties of matter. This principle guides the modern design of molecules for medicine, agriculture, and energy applications. Using this strategy, we can finally start to develop chemical design principles for emerging <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum</a> technologies,” says Ignacio Gustin, a chemistry graduate student at Rochester and the first author of the study.</p>



<p>The breakthrough came when the team recognized that resonance Raman experiments yielded all the information needed to study decoherence with full chemical complexity. Such experiments are routinely used to investigate photophysics and photochemistry, but their utility for quantum decoherence had not been appreciated. </p>



<p>The key insights emerged from discussions with <a href="https://www.sas.rochester.edu/chm/people/faculty/mccamant-david/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>David McCamant</strong></a>, an associate professor in the chemistry department at Rochester and an expert in Raman spectroscopy, and with Chang Woo Kim, now on the faculty at Chonnam National University in Korea and an expert in quantum decoherence, while he was a postdoctoral researcher at Rochester.</p>



<p>The team used their method to show, for the first time, how electronic superpositions in thymine, one of the building blocks of DNA, unravel in just 30 femtoseconds (one femtosecond is one millionth of one billionth of a second) following its absorption of UV light. They found that a few vibrations in the molecule dominate the initial steps in the decoherence process, while solvent dominates the later stages. </p>



<p>In addition, they discovered that chemical modifications to thymine can significantly alter the decoherence rate, with hydrogen-bond interactions near the thymine ring leading to more rapid decoherence.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the team’s research opens the way toward understanding the chemical principles that govern quantum decoherence. “We are excited to use this strategy to finally understand quantum decoherence in molecules with full chemical complexity and use it to develop molecules with robust coherence properties,” says Franco.</p>

<p>A new study from <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Hopkins University</a> reveals that apes can recognize photographs of their groupmates, even after a separation of over 25 years. This discovery highlights the longest-lasting social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-have-a-generic-memory-of-their-ancestral-environments/">memory</a> documented outside of humans, offering profound insights into the evolution of human culture from our shared ancestry with apes.</p>



<p>“Chimpanzees and bonobos recognize individuals even though they haven’t seen them for multiple decades,” said study senior author Professor Christopher Krupenye. </p>



<p>“And then there’s this small but significant pattern of greater attention toward individuals with whom they had more positive relationships. It suggests that this is more than just familiarity, that they’re keeping track of aspects of the quality of these social relationships.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memory-mechanisms-of-apes">Memory mechanisms of apes</h2>



<p>Study lead author Laura Lewis is a biological anthropologist and comparative psychologist at the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Berkeley</a>. She reflected on the cognitive similarities between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/apes-may-have-begun-walking-upright-to-eat-leaves-not-fruits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apes</a> and humans.</p>



<p>“We tend to think about great apes as quite different from ourselves but we have really seen these animals as possessing cognitive mechanisms that are very similar to our own, including memory. And I think that is what’s so exciting about this study," said Lewis.</p>



<p>The study was inspired by the researchers' personal experiences with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-can-understand-the-gestures-of-other-great-apes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apes</a>, noting their apparent recognition and enthusiastic responses after long absences. </p>



<p>“You have the impression that apes are responding like they recognize you and that to them you’re really different from the average zoo guest,” said Krupenye. “They’re excited to see you again. So our goal with this study was to ask, empirically, if that’s the case: Do they really have a robust lasting memory for familiar social partners?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-apes-recognize-their-families">How apes recognize their families</h2>



<p>The research involved chimpanzees and bonobos at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, Planckendael Zoo in Belgium, and Kumamoto Sanctuary in Japan.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-children-more-curious-than-apes-yes-and-no-finds-new-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apes</a> were shown photographs of former groupmates - including some they had not seen for up to 26 years - alongside images of strangers.</p>



<p>The results were striking. The apes demonstrated a significant preference for looking at former groupmates over strangers, and even more so at friends.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In a notable instance, bonobo Louise showed a strong bias towards her sister Loretta and nephew Erin, whom she hadn't seen for over 26 years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-memory-of-apes">Social memory of apes</h2>



<p>These findings suggest that great ape social memory could outlast the majority of their 40 to 60-year lifespan, comparable to human memory, which can persist as long as 48 years after separation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This longevity in memory might have been present in our common evolutionary ancestors and could have played a crucial role in the development of human culture, including maintaining long-term intergroup relationships.</p>



<p>The idea that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/apes-evolved-shoulders-as-brakes-to-safely-climb-down-trees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apes</a> remember information about the quality of their relationships, years beyond any potential functionality, is another novel and human-like finding of the work, said Krupenye.</p>



<p>“This pattern of social relationships shaping long-term memory in chimpanzees and bonobos is similar to what we see in humans, that our own social relationships also seem to shape our long-term memory of individuals,” said Lewis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications">Study implications</h2>



<p>The research raises intriguing questions about the emotional depth of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-apes-spin-to-experience-altered-states-of-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">apes</a>. Do they miss their friends and family members they no longer see? </p>



<p>“The idea that they do remember others and therefore they may miss these individuals is really a powerful cognitive mechanism and something that's been thought of as uniquely human,” said Lewis. “Our study doesn’t determine they are doing this, but it raises questions about the possibility that they may have the ability to do so.”</p>



<p>The team hopes the findings will improve our understanding of great apes while shedding new light on how deeply they could be affected when poaching and deforestation separate them from their groupmates.</p>



<p>“This work clearly shows how fundamental and long lasting these relationships are. Disruption to those relationships is likely very damaging,” said Krupenye.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, the research team aims to investigate whether this remarkable social memory is unique to great apes or shared by other primates. They also plan to explore the richness of ape memories, probing whether they can remember experiences as vividly as they remember individuals.</p>

<p>A recent study led by researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University (<a href="https://www.vcu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VCU</a>) has found that a warmer climate could lead to an increase in mosquito populations, as it becomes more difficult for their predators to control their numbers. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-mosquito-populations">Climate change and mosquito populations</h2>



<p>The researchers discovered that rising temperatures, often associated with climate change, can reduce the effectiveness of mosquito larvae predators in controlling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mosquitoes-find-tasty-humans-from-hundreds-of-meters-away/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mosquito</a> populations. </p>



<p>Warmer temperatures accelerate the development time of the larvae. This, in turn, decreases the window of time available for dragonflies, their natural predators, to consume them. As a result, the study suggests that nearly twice as many mosquito larvae could reach adulthood in a warmer climate. </p>



<p>The researchers conducted their investigation in riverine rock pools at Belle Isle along the James River in Richmond. Even in the presence of their natural predators, warmer temperature pools were found to have a higher number of aquatic mosquito larvae.</p>



<p>It is important to note that the native rock pool mosquito studied in this research is not a significant disease vector. However, these findings could have implications for similar species, such as the invasive Asian rock pool mosquito, which do act as vectors for diseases like West Nile or Zika virus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-mosquitoes-and-disease">Climate, mosquitoes and disease</h2>



<p>Lead researcher of the study, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andrew-Davidson-28" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew T. Davidson</a>, Ph.D., shared his insights, saying, "We might see larger populations of everyone's least favorite bug, mosquitoes. While the mosquito larvae we studied here are the North American rock pool mosquito, these findings likely apply to species of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mosquito-hearing-could-be-targeted-to-combat-deadly-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mosquito</a> that do act as vectors for diseases like West Nile or even Zika virus." </p>



<p>Davidson conducted this research as part of his Ph.D. program in VCU's <a href="https://cilse.vcu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Integrative Life Sciences Education</a>.</p>



<p>The study also emphasizes the important role of predators in stabilizing ecosystems and food webs. Specifically, the researchers focused on the interactions between dragonfly nymphs and mosquito larvae. </p>



<p>Prior to conducting field work, the study was based on concepts of thermal physiology and short-term laboratory experiments, which generated predictive models of the relationship between predators, prey, and temperature in the field. Ultimately, the field study provided empirical evidence to validate these models in a natural environment.</p>



<p>In summary, this research sheds light on the impact of climate change on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-aims-to-control-mosquitoes-by-deactivating-their-sperm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mosquito</a> populations and highlights the need for further studies to better understand the consequences of rising temperatures on the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. </p>



<p>By uncovering the intricate predator-prey dynamics and demonstrating the influence of temperature on these interactions, this study lays the foundation for future research on effective mosquito control strategies in a changing climate.</p>

<p>A new study has found that the prevailing methods used to predict how tree species will respond to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-could-cause-one-billion-deaths-over-the-next-century/">climate change</a> are inaccurate and unreliable. Led by the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a> in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, the research was focused on the ponderosa pine -- a widespread tree in the Western United States.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-space-for-time-substitution-method">Space-for-time substitution method</h2>



<p>The results of the study challenge the reliability of the commonly used "space-for-time substitution" method in forecasting species <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heat-makes-pine-trees-more-susceptible-to-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adaptation to global warming</a>. This technique has been a cornerstone in ecological research for predicting how species might adapt to changing climate conditions. </p>



<p>The space-for-time substitution method assumes that individuals of a species thriving in hotter climates can be proxies for understanding how those in cooler areas might respond to global warming. The idea is that, as temperatures rise, species at the cooler edge of their distribution would adapt similarly to their counterparts in warmer regions.</p>



<p>However, the new study reveals that this approach might be fundamentally flawed. When applied to the ponderosa pine, the method inaccurately projected a positive response to warming, whereas the actual response was detrimental.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"We found that space-for-time substitution generates predictions that are wrong in terms of whether the response to warming is a positive or negative one," said study co-author Margaret Evans, an associate professor in the UArizona Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. "This method says that ponderosa pines should benefit from warming, but they actually suffer with warming. This is dangerously misleading."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-on-trees-and-climate">Critical insights on trees and climate</h2>



<p>The experts meticulously analyzed ponderosa pine tree rings dating back to 1900 across the Western United States. They compared the trees' actual growth with the predictions made by the space-for-time model.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings were alarming: the model had failed to accurately predict the trees' response to recent warming trends. The tree ring data painted a starkly different picture from the model's predictions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In reality, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-majority-of-urban-trees-are-threatened-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trees</a> consistently exhibited negative impacts due to temperature variability. Warmer years resulted in smaller-than-average growth rings, contradicting the model's suggestion of a beneficial effect of warming. </p>



<p>"If it's a warmer-than-average year, they put on a smaller-than-average ring, so warming is actually bad for them, and that's true everywhere," explained Professor Evan.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trees-and-rapid-climate-change">Trees and rapid climate change</h2>



<p>A key insight from the study is that the pace of climate change might be outstripping the trees' ability to adapt. The research underscores a fundamental ecological principle: adaptation and migration are gradual processes, often lagging behind rapid environmental changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While evolutionary adaptation and migration could theoretically enable species to cope with shifting temperatures, the current rate of climate change appears too swift for these natural processes to keep pace. </p>



<p>The team also explored how variations in rainfall affect tree growth, confirming that increased rainfall universally benefits the trees, regardless of temporal or spatial context.</p>



<p>"These spatially based predictions are really dangerous, because the spatial patterns reflect an end point after a long period of time when species have had a chance to evolve and disperse and, ultimately, sort themselves out on the landscape," said Professor Evans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"But that's just not how climate change works. Unfortunately, the trees find themselves in a situation where change is happening faster than the trees can adapt, which is really putting them at risk of going extinct. It's a word of caution for ecologists."</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em></a>.</p>

<p>How are memories consolidated during sleep, and how are breathing patterns involved? Recent research spearheaded by Dr. Thomas Schreiner, leader of the Emmy Noether junior research group at LMU’s <a href="https://www.lmu.de/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Psychology</a>, delves into this longstanding question.  </p>



<p>In a 2021 study, Schreiner and his team demonstrated a direct link between specific sleep-related brain activity and the reactivation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memories during sleep</a>. However, the question remained: What orchestrates these rhythms?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-back-at-old-data">Looking back at old data</h2>



<p>To explore this further, Schreiner's team collaborated with experts from the <a href="https://www.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> for Human Development in Berlin and the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>. Their meticulous reanalysis of data unveiled a surprising factor, which involves respiration. </p>



<p>“Our breathing influences how memories are consolidated during sleep,” reveals Schreiner, pointing to a novel understanding of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-helps-the-brain-consolidate-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory-sleep connection</a>.</p>



<p>In their original study, the researchers engaged 20 participants who were shown 120 images, each linked to specific words, over two sessions. Following this, the participants slept for approximately two hours in a sleep lab. </p>



<p>Upon waking, they were quizzed on the learned associations. Throughout the learning and sleep phases, the team recorded brain activity using EEG, alongside the participants’ breathing patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breathing-memory-and-the-sleeping-brain">Breathing, memory, and the sleeping brain</h2>



<p>The team found that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insomnia-may-lead-to-memory-loss-in-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleeping brain</a> spontaneously reactivated learned content in the presence of slow oscillations and sleep spindles - brief periods of heightened brain activity. “These brain rhythms, crucial for memory, evolve from childhood to adolescence and wane during aging,” notes Schreiner.</p>



<p>Intriguingly, as respiratory frequency varies with age, the researchers established a correlation between breathing patterns and the emergence of these distinct brain rhythms. </p>



<p>“Our findings connect breathing with the occurrence of specific brain patterns linked to memory,” explains Schreiner. This discovery extends the known relationship between breathing and cognition, highlighting its significance even during sleep.</p>



<p>Acknowledging that older individuals often experience <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lack-of-sleep-leads-to-risky-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep</a> disturbances, respiratory issues, and memory decline, Schreiner is eager to investigate potential interconnections. He speculates on the cognitive benefits of interventions like CPAP masks, commonly used for sleep apnea treatment, in addressing these interconnected phenomena.</p>



<p>In summary, this research opens a new chapter in our understanding of sleep and memory, suggesting that the simple act of breathing might hold the key to effective memory consolidation during sleep. As Schreiner and his team continue their explorations, they pave the way for innovative approaches to enhancing memory and cognitive health across the lifespan.</p>

<p>A recent study conducted by scientists at <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon State University</a> sheds light on the ability of certain coral species to withstand marine heat waves by "remembering" previous events. This phenomenon, known as ecological memory, appears to be intricately linked to the microbial communities living within the corals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-coral-resilience">Importance of coral resilience</h2>



<p>Alex Vompe, the study's lead author and a doctoral student under microbiology professor Rebecca Vega Thurber, emphasized the importance of this finding. </p>



<p>"<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-reefs-in-some-parts-of-the-world-actually-benefit-from-warming-el-nino-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coral reefs</a> are vital to our planet's ecosystem, but they face significant threats from various human-induced pressures, including climate change," Vompe stated. He highlighted the urgent need to understand how reefs adapt to increasing and repeated disturbances like marine heat waves, pointing out the potential role of coral microbiomes in this rapid adaptation process.</p>



<p>The study arrives at a critical time as marine heat waves are expected to become more frequent and severe due to climate change. Understanding and enhancing coral resilience is a key conservation goal. </p>



<p>Vompe notes that recognizing the role microbes play in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recent-coral-recovery-in-the-great-barrier-reef-has-paused/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral adaptation</a> can significantly impact coral gardening and planting efforts. He also suggests that a deeper grasp of microbial processes and the organisms responsible for ecological memory could aid in developing probiotics or monitoring protocols to enhance coral health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-coral-microbiome">Understanding the coral microbiome</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-study-provides-answers-to-how-coral-reefs-can-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Corals</a>, though occupying less than 1% of the ocean, are home to nearly a quarter of all marine species. They play a crucial role in regulating the sea's carbon dioxide levels and are invaluable for scientific research, particularly in medicine. </p>



<p>These fascinating organisms, consisting of interconnected polyps, house not only microscopic algae but also a diverse array of bacteria, viruses, archaea, and microeukaryotes, collectively known as the coral microbiome.</p>



<p>The symbiotic relationships within the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-growth-cannot-keep-pace-with-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral reef ecosystem</a> are foundational. Microbes assist coral hosts in various vital functions, including cycling of essential elements and protection against pathogens. In return, the coral polyps provide nutrients and shelter to these microbes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coral-reefs-and-climate-change">Coral reefs and climate change</h2>



<p>However, climate change poses a significant threat to these delicate relationships, with warming oceans potentially leading to the collapse of these symbiotic partnerships, a phenomenon known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepest-known-coral-reef-bleaching-discovered-alarming-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral bleaching</a>. But, as Vompe points out, there is a glimmer of hope. </p>



<p>"<em>Acropora retusa</em>, a prevalent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unexpected-coral-adaptations-challenge-conservation-plans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral</a> species in the Mo'orean coral reef, displays a powerful ecological memory response to heat waves, hinting at a greater resilience to climate change than previously thought," he explains.</p>



<p>This conclusion was drawn from a five-year study conducted by Vompe, Vega Thurber, and their colleagues from various universities. They examined 200 coral colonies in a reef on the north shore of Mo’orea, French Polynesia, which had undergone a drastic ecological reset in 2010 due to natural disasters. </p>



<p>This unique setting allowed the researchers to closely observe the coral's response to consecutive heat waves in 2016, 2017, 2018-2019, and 2020.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-corals-survive-bleaching-by-remembering-0">Some corals survive bleaching by "remembering"</h2>



<p>Vega Thurber noted that some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-skeletons-improve-reef-recovery-after-bleaching/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral</a> species seemed to maintain better health during subsequent heat waves, likely due to their exposure to past events. "The memory response of <em>Acropora retusa</em> was strongly linked to changes in its microbiome, supporting the idea that the microbial community plays a part in this process," she said.</p>



<p>Cauliflower corals in the genus Pocillopora also demonstrated resilience. Despite the initial disturbance caused by the 2019 heat wave, they recovered to their pre-disturbance state, even amidst the subsequent 2020 heat wave. The corals seemed to "remember" how to survive.</p>



<p>Vega Thurber attributes this resilience to the unique biological features of coral microbial communities. These include short generation cycles and large population sizes, which enhance adaptability and responsiveness to environmental change.</p>



<p>"In two of the three coral species we focused on, we observed initial microbiome resilience, host and microbiome acclimatization, or developed microbiome resistance to repeated heat stress," Vega Thurber concluded. "These patterns are consistent with the concept of ecological memory, highlighting the critical role of the microbiome in coral resilience."</p>



<p>In summary, this research not only sheds light on the complex interactions within coral ecosystems but also opens new avenues for conservation efforts and strategies to combat the effects of climate change on these vital organisms.</p>

<p>In an increasingly digitized world, social media has become an integral part of many people's lives, spanning across generations. While some studies suggest that engaging with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-you-use-social-media-affects-your-sense-of-happiness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> can boost mood, others indicate that it may have a negative impact on mental health, leading to the phenomenon known as Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). </p>



<p>In a recent study conducted by Associate Professor Julia Brailovskaia and her team from the Mental Health Research and Treatment Center at <a href="https://www.kli.psy.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/fbz/fbz-en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ruhr University</a> Bochum, Germany, and the <a href="https://www.leibniz-hki.de/en/german-centre-for-mental-health.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">German Center for Mental Health</a>, new evidence emerged regarding the effects of social media use on job satisfaction and mental health. The study revealed compelling insights into the relationship between social media use and overall well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-social-media-and-mood-swings">Studying social media and mood swings</h2>



<p>The research team designed a one-week study involving 166 participants working in various sectors, who spent a minimum of 35 minutes a day engaging in non-work-related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-use-is-not-an-addictive-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> use. </p>



<p>The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group continued their usual social media habits, while the other group reduced their social media use by 30 minutes per day for seven days. </p>



<p>The participants completed online questionnaires before the study, on the day after it commenced, and one week later. These questionnaires provided valuable data on workload, job satisfaction, commitment, mental health, stress levels, FoMO, and behaviors indicating addictive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-so-many-people-addicted-to-social-media/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> use.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-team-learned">What the team learned</h2>



<p>The team's findings revealed that a mere 30-minute reduction in daily social media use had significant positive effects on job satisfaction and mental health. </p>



<p>Julia Brailovskaia stated, "The participants in this group felt less overworked and were more committed on the job than the control group." </p>



<p>Moreover, the participants' sense of FoMO decreased, indicating reduced anxieties associated with missing out on important events in their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-behavior-groups-people-into-opposing-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">networks</a>. These improvements persisted for at least a week after the end of the study and, in some instances, even increased over time. </p>



<p>Encouragingly, participants who voluntarily reduced their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-causes-depression-in-adults-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> use continued to maintain the habit even after the study's conclusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-media-and-work-performance">Social media and work performance</h2>



<p>The study suggests that the observed improvements can be attributed to reduced feelings of being overworked and increased attention focused on job tasks. </p>



<p>Brailovskaia explains, "Our brains can't cope well with constant distraction from a task. People who frequently stop what they're doing to catch up on their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-over-social-media-less-stress-more-life-satisfaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> feed find it more difficult to focus and achieve poorer results." </p>



<p>By freeing up time from social media use, participants had more opportunity to prioritize their work responsibilities and avoid divided attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-media-and-personal-relationships">Social media and personal relationships</h2>



<p>Another significant finding from the study emphasized the potential negative impact of excessive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-social-media-cause-depression-in-children-a-new-study-says-no/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> use on interpersonal relationships in the workplace. </p>



<p>Spending excessive time on social media may hinder face-to-face interaction with colleagues, potentially leading to feelings of alienation. Limiting social media use could help mitigate this effect and encourage real-life interactions among colleagues, fostering a more supportive work environment.</p>



<p>The study's results align with <a href="https://news.rub.de/wissenschaft/2022-04-20-psychologie-weniger-smartphone-mehr-wohlbefinden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previous research</a> conducted by the team. It suggests that even a modest reduction of 20 to 30 minutes in daily social media consumption can alleviate depressive symptoms and improve overall mental health. </p>



<p>Julia Brailovskaia suggests that incorporating a reduction in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-impacts-boys-and-girls-at-different-ages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a> use as a component of business coaching training, mental health programs, and psychotherapeutic interventions could yield valuable benefits for individuals' well-being and job performance.</p>

<p>In an effort to understand the ecological impact of climate change on aardvarks, researchers from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon State University</a> embarked on a unique study in sub-Saharan Africa.</p>



<p>The goal was to collect and analyze aardvark feces, providing insights into the species' adaptation and survival in a changing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-disrupts-communication-among-animals/">environment</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>“Everyone had heard of aardvarks and they are considered very ecologically important but there has been little study of them,” said wildlife biologist Clint Epps, who led the study with wildlife geneticist Rachel Crowhurst. “We wanted to see if we could collect enough data to begin to understand them.”</p>



<p>Epps had previously acquired skills in identifying aardvark tracks and feces during postdoctoral research in Tanzania. For the current study, the team collected 253 fecal samples, of which 104 were used for genetic analysis.</p>



<p>“During times of rapid environmental change, evaluating and describing changes in the landscape where a species lives is important for informed conservation and management decisions,” said Crowhurst.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elusive-aardvarks-nbsp">Elusive aardvarks&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Aardvarks are nocturnal and burrowing mammals that weigh up to 180 pounds and are distinct in their ecology. With long snouts and claws used for digging out ant and termite hills, aardvarks are the sole members of the order Tubulidentata, distantly related to golden moles, elephants, and manatees.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite being categorized as "least concern" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the actual distribution and population trends of aardvarks remain largely unknown. This lack of knowledge is attributed to their nocturnal habits, low population densities, and expansive, often remote habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aardvarks-are-understudied-animals">Aardvarks are understudied animals</h2>



<p>“I wanted to work on a system that was understudied, where anything I learned would likely be truly new information to the scientific community,” said Epps. “I also wanted to work over large landscapes, on foot, alone or with a friend or with guards when needed, in protected areas, with minimal logistical support and little cost.”</p>



<p>By analyzing the genetic data from the fecal samples, the researchers inferred the distribution and range of aardvark movements. For instance, they could identify if fecal samples from different locations belonged to the same individual, which helped in estimating the scale of their movements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In South Africa, the findings revealed three distinct regional groups of aardvarks, suggesting some degree of isolation among populations in the western, central, and eastern regions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results further indicated that aardvarks could travel up to 55 kilometers from their birthplace, with closely related individuals found as far as 44 kilometers apart.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, the genetic differentiation was more pronounced in arid landscapes, implying that such environments hinder aardvark movement, potentially affecting their gene flow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers plan to continue the research with genomic analyses and field work across a wider area of sub-Saharan Africa.</p>



<p>“Our initial findings suggest that climate change will increase habitat fragmentation and limit gene flow for aardvarks, particularly where precipitation is expected to decrease and temperature increase,” said Epps. “With aridity expected to increase in southern-most Africa under most climate change scenarios, the need for further research is clear.”</p>



<p>Despite their extensive fieldwork, Epps and his team have yet to see an aardvark in the wild, and hope to do so in the near future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.iucn.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Union for Conservation of Nature</a> (IUCN) has raised an alarm about the risk of extinction facing a significant number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/value-freshwater-fish/">freshwater fish</a> species. </p>



<p>In a report presented at the United Nations climate conference in Dubai (COP28) on Monday, the IUCN’s assessment of nearly 15,000 species revealed that about 25 percent are on the brink of extinction, with climate change affecting at least 17 percent of these threatened species.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-contributing-factors">Contributing factors</h2>



<p>Rising sea levels are pushing seawater into rivers, exacerbating the threat to freshwater species. Additionally, these species are endangered by factors such as pollution, overfishing, invasive species, diseases, dams, and water extraction. According to the IUCN, pollution affects 57 percent of the at-risk freshwater fish species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-freshwater-ecosystems-nbsp">Freshwater ecosystems&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Kathy Hughes, co-chair of the IUCN freshwater fish specialist group, highlighted the critical role of these species in ecosystems, noting their importance to billions of people dependent on freshwater ecosystems and the millions who rely on fisheries for their livelihood.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Ensuring freshwater ecosystems are well managed, remain free-flowing with sufficient water, and good water quality is essential to stop species declines and maintain food security, livelihoods, and economies in a climate resilient world,” said Hughes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-salmon-nbsp">Atlantic salmon&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In 2021, the <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Wildlife Fund</a> reported that at least 200 million people globally depend on freshwater fish as their primary protein source. The IUCN assessment also pointed to a decline in the global population of Atlantic salmon, classified as near threatened, with a 23 percent decrease from 2006 to 2020. </p>



<p>Atlantic salmon, which inhabit both freshwater and saltwater, are adversely affected by climate change across their life cycle, including developmental challenges, reduced prey availability, and the expansion of invasive species. Additionally, human-made barriers like dams hinder their access to vital spawning and feeding grounds, while pollution and sedimentation from activities like logging and agriculture increase young salmon mortality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change">Climate change</h2>



<p>The threat is not limited to freshwater species alone. The IUCN’s updated <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red List of Threatened Species</a> now includes 157,190 species, with 44,016 facing the threat of extinction. “Climate change is menacing the diversity of life our planet harbors, and undermining nature’s capacity to meet basic human needs,” said IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar.</p>



<p>Climate change poses several significant threats to freshwater species through various mechanisms. Protecting freshwater species from these threats requires global efforts to mitigate climate change and local conservation actions to preserve and restore freshwater habitats.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-changes-nbsp">Temperature changes&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Increasing water temperatures can disrupt the life cycles and breeding patterns of many species. Some species will not survive if the water becomes too warm for their physiological processes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-altered-water-levels">Altered water levels</h3>



<p>Climate change causes changes in precipitation patterns, resulting in altered river flows, lake levels, and wetland areas. This can destroy or reduce habitats for many freshwater species.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-pollution">Increased pollution</h3>



<p>Higher temperatures can exacerbate pollution issues by increasing the concentration of pollutants and reducing the water's capacity to dissolve oxygen, leading to hypoxic conditions.</p>

<p>The timing of seasonal events, like spring thaw or seasonal rains, is shifting due to climate change. This can affect breeding and migration patterns of aquatic species.</p>

<p>Warmer temperatures may allow invasive species and new pathogens to thrive in areas where they were previously unable to survive, outcompeting or infecting native species.</p>

<p>While primarily an issue for marine ecosystems, the increasing acidity of oceans can affect freshwater systems as well, especially in coastal and estuarine areas.</p>

<p>Extreme weather events like droughts and floods, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change, can lead to habitat fragmentation, isolating populations and reducing genetic diversity.</p>

<p>In a breakthrough study, astronomers have harnessed asteroseismology - the study of stellar oscillations - to measure the distance between stars and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-ancient-ocean-floor-surrounds-the-earths-core/">Earth</a> with remarkable accuracy. The experts compare this technique to using the "music" of stars.</p>



<p>The team applied this method to thousands of stars, cross-verifying measurements from the Gaia mission's exploration of the near Universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gaia-mission">Gaia mission</h2>



<p>The night sky is a mosaic of celestial bodies - stars, planets, distant suns, and galaxies billions of light years away. Discerning their exact distances from Earth is a significant challenge and a key objective for astronomers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This pursuit led to the launch of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission a decade ago. Gaia's satellite has since provided astronomical data on nearly two billion stars, improving our understanding of their positions, distances, and movements.</p>



<p>At the <a href="https://www.epfl.ch/en/">Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne</a> (EPFL), Professor Richard Anderson's research group is focused on measuring the expansion of the Universe using Gaia as an instrumental tool.</p>



<p>"Gaia increased by a factor of 10,000 the number of stars whose parallaxes are measured thanks to a massive gain in accuracy over its predecessor, the ESA Hipparcos mission," said Professor Anderson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parallax-measurements">Parallax measurements</h2>



<p>Parallaxes are fundamental in calculating star distances. This technique involves triangulating Gaia's location in space, the Sun, and the star in question. However, measuring parallax becomes increasingly challenging with distant stars.</p>



<p>Despite Gaia's success, its parallax measurements are complex and subject to small systematic errors. To address this, the research team conducted calculations on over 12,000 oscillating red giant stars, creating the most extensive and accurate sample to date.</p>



<p>"We measured the Gaia biases by comparing the satellite's parallax reports with those we determined using asteroseismology," explained study lead author Saniya Khan, a scientist in Anderson's group. This research, published in the journal <a href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/full_html/2023/12/aa47919-23/aa47919-23.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics</em></a>, marks a significant leap in celestial measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frequency-spectrum-nbsp">Frequency spectrum&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Asteroseismology functions similarly to how geologists use earthquakes to understand Earth's structure. Astronomers analyze stars' vibrations and oscillations, which manifest as variations in light intensity. These are translated into sound waves, forming a frequency spectrum of the oscillations.</p>



<p>"The frequency spectrum lets us determine how far away a star is, enabling us to obtain asteroseismic parallaxes," said Khan. "In our study, we listened to the 'music' of a vast number of stars - some of them 15,000 light-years away!"</p>



<p>This process involves understanding the propagation speed of sound waves in space, which varies based on the star's interior temperature and density.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance">Study significance</h2>



<p>"By analyzing the frequency spectrum of stellar oscillations, we can estimate the size of a star, much like you can identify the size of a musical instrument by the kind of sound it makes -- think of the difference in pitch between a violon and a cello," said study co-author Professor Andrea Miglio from the University of Bologna.</p>



<p>The team then compared the luminosity of stars with perceived luminosity on Earth, coupling this with temperature and chemical composition data obtained through spectroscopy. Sophisticated analyses of these data allowed them to calculate star distances accurately.</p>



<p>"Asteroseismology is the only way we can check Gaia's parallax accuracy across the full sky - that is, for both low- and high-intensity stars," explained Anderson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research">Future research</h2>



<p>Going forward, missions like TESS and PLATO will use asteroseismology for exoplanet detection and survey, expanding dataset coverage across vast sky regions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Methods similar to ours will therefore play a crucial role in improving Gaia's parallax measurements, which will help us pinpoint our place in the Universe and benefit a plethora of subfields of astronomy and astrophysics," said Khan.</p>

<p>The annual migration of billions of birds, a journey spanning thousands of miles, has long fascinated and puzzled ornithologists. A critical aspect of this phenomenal journey is where these birds rest and refuel. This question is now being addressed in a new study by Fengyi Guo, a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.princeton.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton</a>, and her team.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-study-bird-migration">How to study bird migration</h2>



<p>Fengyi Guo, along with colleagues from Princeton and the <a href="https://www.udel.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Delaware</a>, has published a paper that utilizes weather radar imagery to map the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/surprising-discovery-behind-long-distance-bird-migration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migratory</a> stopover sites of birds in North America. This innovative approach has enabled the team to identify over 2.4 million hectares of crucial stopover hotspots across the eastern United States.</p>



<p>Guo explains the methodology, stating, “Most landbirds migrate at night, lifting off from stopover sites after sunset. Weather radar captures this movement, but interpreting the data requires extensive processing.” The radar, sampling the atmosphere every 6-10 minutes, detects bird take-offs within an 80 km radius, providing intricate details of stopover habitats.</p>



<p>David Wilcove, a co-author and C-PREE faculty member, highlights the significance of this research. “Fengyi’s work gives us the first accurate picture of key stopover sites for birds across the eastern United States,” he says. This information is vital for identifying and protecting these critical sites to ensure safe passage for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-birds-have-new-strategy-to-cope-with-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migrating</a> birds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-resting-spots-for-migrating-birds">Identifying resting spots for migrating birds</h2>



<p>The study reveals that these hotspots are predominantly deciduous forests, including fragments in deforested regions. These areas are essential resting points for numerous landbirds annually. However, bird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/geomagnetic-disturbances-throw-nocturnal-birds-off-course/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration challenges</a> remain. Only half of these protected hotspots are free from extractive resource use, and two-thirds lack formal protection.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the study found substantial seasonal differences in hotspot locations. The places where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-birds-take-breaks-to-boost-their-immune-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds rest</a> in the fall often differ from those used in the spring. With only 17% of hotspots being used in both seasons, the need for protecting a vast number of sites across the eastern U.S. becomes apparent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-decline-of-migratory-bird-populations">The decline of migratory bird populations</h2>



<p>Since 1970, migrating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-radio-waves-disrupt-the-magnetic-compass-of-migratory-birds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird populations</a> in the U.S. have declined by over a quarter, primarily due to human-induced factors such as habitat loss, overexploitation, and climate change. The authors of the paper emphasize the importance of protecting key habitats, noting higher stopover densities in protected areas.</p>



<p>The paper states, “A well-distributed network of well-protected stopover areas is essential to sustaining healthy populations of migratory landbirds in North America.” This network would complement conservation efforts on breeding and wintering grounds.</p>



<p>In summary, this study by Guo and her team marks a significant advancement in understanding and conserving migratory bird pathways. By leveraging the power of weather radar, this research provides a foundation for targeted conservation efforts, ensuring the survival and health of migratory bird populations in North America.</p>

<p>The debate over the first human settlement of America has long captivated the archaeological community. Traditional theories posited that early humans arrived in American through an ice-free corridor around 13,000 years ago. </p>



<p>However, recent archaeological and genetic discoveries, such as the 23,000-year-old human footprints found in New Mexico, challenge this timeline, suggesting an earlier arrival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-americans-traveled-on-ice">First Americans traveled on ice</h2>



<p>Increasing evidence indicates that the first Americans might have traversed the Pacific coastline from Beringia, a land bridge connecting Asia and North America. This route became accessible during the last glacial maximum as ice sheets trapped vast water amounts, lowering sea levels.</p>



<p>At the American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting (<a href="https://www.agu.org/Fall-Meeting" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AGU23</a>) in San Francisco, researchers presented paleoclimate reconstructions of the Pacific Northwest. These findings suggest that sea ice might have facilitated southward migration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-kelp-highway-hypothesis">The kelp highway hypothesis</h2>



<p>The idea of coastal migration isn't novel. Scientists speculate that early Americans were south of the continental ice sheets at least 16,000 years ago, long before the ice-free corridor opened. </p>



<p>The "kelp highway" theory proposes that these individuals traveled in boats down into North America, exploiting coastal waters' rich resources.</p>



<p>Archaeological evidence from western Canada indicates coastal settlements dating back to 14,000 years ago. However, a 2020 study highlighted potential challenges to coastal migration, such as strong currents from glacial meltwater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-conditions-for-the-first-americans">Ocean conditions for the first Americans</h2>



<p>Summer Praetorius from the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">US Geological Survey</a> and colleagues turned to climate proxies in ocean sediment to understand ocean conditions during these migration periods. By analyzing fossilized plankton, they reconstructed past ocean temperatures, salinity, and sea ice cover.</p>



<p>Praetorius' presentation is part of a <a href="https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm23/meetingapp.cgi/Session/207108#isCurrent" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">session</a> focusing on the Pleistocene climate history and geology of Beringia and the North Pacific. The AGU23 conference, attracting over 24,000 experts, explores various Earth and space science topics.</p>



<p>Praetorius' team used climate models and discovered that, around 20,000 years ago, ocean currents were over twice as strong as today, making boat travel challenging. However, their records also indicated significant winter sea ice presence until about 15,000 years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-sea-ice-highway-concept">The sea ice highway concept</h2>



<p>Praetorius suggests that early Americans, adapted to cold environments, might have used sea ice as a platform for migration, similar to how Arctic people today use dog sleds and snowmobiles. </p>



<p>This "sea ice highway" could have been a viable route between 24,500-22,000 and 16,400-14,800 years ago.</p>



<p>While proving sea ice travel remains challenging due to underwater archaeological sites, this theory offers a new perspective on how humans might have reached North America. </p>



<p>Praetorius emphasizes that various migration methods, including sea ice and later coastal boat travel, are not mutually exclusive. Praetorius concludes, "Nothing is off the table. We will always be surprised by ancient human ingenuity." </p>



<p>This statement encapsulates the ongoing quest to understand the complex and ingenious ways early humans conquered new frontiers.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
