<p>Not everything in the universe is what it seems. Some things, like tiny red objects captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), might look like stars or galaxies. But new research suggests they could be something else entirely - something we’ve never seen before.</p>



<p>The objects, called “little red dots,” were first spotted when Webb returned its initial pictures in 2022. The dots appeared where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-galaxy-shows-us-what-the-early-milky-way-looked-like/">young galaxies</a> would be alone, 500 to 700 million years after the Big Bang. But they were too bright and too big to be galaxies that early in the universe. Something wasn’t adding up.</p>



<p>For a while, researchers thought they had discovered ancient, mature galaxies that somehow formed way faster than expected - so fast they started calling them “universe breakers.” But after digging deeper, a new idea started to form. Maybe these weren’t <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thousands-of-galaxies-revealed-in-a-single-webb-image/">galaxies</a> at all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-star-that-s-hiding-a-black-hole">A star that's hiding a black hole</h2>



<p>In a recent study, scientists proposed a bold theory: the red dots might be something called a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/free-floating-black-hole-appears-to-be-feeding-on-a-star/">black hole</a> star. Picture a huge sphere of gas that looks like a cold, low-energy star - but inside, it’s hiding a growing supermassive black hole.</p>



<p>Instead of getting its energy from fusion like a normal star, this object feeds off matter falling into the black hole at its core. That process generates energy and gives off light, creating the bright signal scientists saw.</p>



<p>“Basically, we looked at enough red dots until we saw one that had so much atmosphere that it couldn't be explained as typical stars we’d expect from a galaxy,” said Joel Leja, an associate professor of astrophysics at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a>. </p>



<p>“It’s an elegant answer really, because we thought it was a tiny galaxy full of many separate cold stars, but it’s actually, effectively, one gigantic, very cold star.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-stars-that-shine-strangely">Cold stars that shine strangely</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/video/earth-humans-and-all-living-creatures-are-made-from-stars/">Stars</a> that are cold emit very little visible light. They glow mainly in the red or near-infrared part of the spectrum - a type of light our eyes can’t see. These stars are usually small and faint, which makes them hard to find.</p>



<p>But these red dots stood out. The light they gave off wasn’t from a hot, bright region like we usually see near black holes. Instead, it came from very cold gas, similar to what’s found around low-mass stars.</p>



<p>Webb was built to pick up exactly this kind of ancient, stretched-out infrared light. Its infrared sensors can see light that traveled across the universe for over 13 billion years. That makes it perfect for spotting objects from the very early days of the cosmos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-most-extreme-red-dot">The most extreme red dot</h2>



<p>Between January and December 2024, the team gathered spectra - a kind of light fingerprint - from 4,500 galaxies. Spectra can tell scientists how bright something is across different wavelengths, which helps them figure out what it’s made of and how massive it is.</p>



<p>One of these objects stood out. Nicknamed “The Cliff,” it turned out to be the most extreme of all the red dots. It was so far away that its light took about 11.9 billion years to reach Earth.</p>



<p>“The extreme properties of The Cliff forced us to go back to the drawing board, and come up with entirely new models,” said Anna de Graaff, a researcher for the <a href="https://www.mpia.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Astronomy</a>.</p>



<p>Spectral analysis showed that The Cliff wasn’t made up of countless tiny stars. It was a single, massive object - a black hole pulling in gas so fast that it wrapped itself in a glowing shell of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-star-forming-hydrogen-cloud-discovered-surprisingly-close-to-earth-eos/">hydrogen</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-black-hole-stars-a-missing-link">Are black hole stars a missing link?</h2>



<p>Black holes are found at the center of most galaxies. Some of them are enormous - millions or even billions of times more massive than our sun. But no one knows exactly how they got that big, or how they formed in the first place.</p>



<p>“No one's ever really known why or where these gigantic black holes at the center of galaxies come from,” said Leja. “These black hole stars might be the first phase of formation for the black holes that we see in galaxies today - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supermassive-black-holes-are-much-more-common-in-the-universe-than-believed/">supermassive black holes</a> in their little infancy stage.”</p>



<p>That idea could help solve a major puzzle in astronomy. If these red dots are actually black hole stars, then maybe they’re the missing link - the early-stage objects that grow into the supermassive black holes we see in today’s galaxies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-following-clues-from-the-universe">Following clues from the universe </h2>



<p>The team plans to keep studying these black hole star candidates, especially by looking at how dense the gas is and how strong the light output is. That might help confirm whether they’re really seeing a new type of object.</p>



<p>“This is the best idea we have and really the first one that fits nearly all of the data, so now we need to flesh it out more,” said Leja. </p>



<p>“It's okay to be wrong. The universe is much weirder than we can imagine and all we can do is follow its clues. There are still big surprises out there for us.”</p>

<p>A study from <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a> has revealed fascinating new details about cat communication, focusing on the role of scent and bacteria in their interactions. The experts found that domestic cats send signals to each other using odors derived from bacteria living in their anal glands.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was conducted by Connie Rojas, a postdoctoral researcher, and Professor Jonathan Eisen from the UC Davis Department of Evolution and Ecology and Genome Center.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-communication">Animal communication</h2>



<p>Many different animals use scents to communicate with each other. This form of communication is especially important in the animal kingdom.</p>



<p>Some mammals mark their territory with scents. This serves as a warning to others of their presence and claims over an area.</p>



<p>Scents play a crucial role in the mating behaviors of various mammals. They can indicate when an individual is ready to mate or help in selecting a genetically compatible mate.</p>



<p>Animals express fear, aggression, or other emotions through scents. This is often a way to communicate danger or assert dominance. Scents can also help mammals identify each other.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-and-odor">Microbes and odor</h2>



<p>The UC Davis study adds to a growing body of research on the relationship between microbes and odor in mammals.</p>



<p>"Many mammals rely on volatile organic chemical compounds (VOCs) produced by bacteria for their communication and behavior, though little is known about the exact molecular mechanisms or bacterial species that are responsible," wrote the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>Rojas led a detailed three-part investigation into the anal gland secretions of domestic cats, utilizing advanced techniques like DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, and microbial culturing. The goal was to understand the chemical composition of these secretions and the microbes responsible for their production.</p>



<p>The subjects of the study were 23 domestic cats, patients at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, who were undergoing elective procedures like dental cleaning. Their participation was authorized by their owners through written consent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-findings">Significant findings</h2>



<p>The team discovered a highly variable microbiome in the cats' anal glands. Predominantly, five bacterial genera - Corynebacterium, Bacteroides, Proteus, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus - were found.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, there was considerable variation in the microbial makeup among individual cats. Notably, older cats tended to have a different microbiome compared to younger ones. The experts also observed variations in obese cats, although the sample size was too small for definitive conclusions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-living-environment-nbsp">Living environment&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Interestingly, we did find evidence that the microbiome functional repertoires in the anal gland were associated with host living environment; cats that lived indoors had microbiome functions that were not identical to cats that had outdoor access," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"It is thought that cats with outdoor access are more likely to be infected with parasites than indoor-only cats but may have more exposure to natural enrichment and mental stimulation. Conversely, cats that have an indoor-only lifestyle may experience reduced physical activity, greater food consumption, and less natural enrichment."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Nonetheless, it is not clear how these lifestyle differences and contact with the outdoors could be linked to functional differences in the anal gland microbiome."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-anal-gland-microbiome-nbsp">Anal gland microbiome&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers said it is important to acknowledge that another factor and source of variation in anal gland microbiome profiles could be the perianal skin surrounding the gland itself and the rectum.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Due to their physical proximity and host grooming behaviors, it is possible that there are microbes in the anal gland that came from the skin or rectum."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-compounds-nbsp">Organic compounds&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Further analysis of the chemicals in the anal glands revealed the presence of hundreds of organic compounds. Genetic analysis suggested that the residing bacteria are producing these organic compounds - including aldehydes, alcohols, esters, and ketones - which form the basis of cats' unique scents.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While these odors are mostly imperceptible to humans, they play a crucial role in cats' social behaviors, such as marking territory, attracting mates, and repelling rivals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-cat-communication">More about cat communication</h2>



<p>Cat communication is a complex and multifaceted aspect of feline behavior, encompassing a variety of vocalizations, body language, and scent signals. Understanding these different modes of communication can provide deeper insights into the world of cats.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vocalizations">Vocalizations</h3>



<p>Cats use a range of vocalizations to communicate. For example, cats typically use meows to communicate with humans. Kittens meow to get attention from their mothers, but adult cats usually reserve meowing for human interactions.</p>



<p>Purring often signifies contentment and can also be a comfort-seeking behavior when a cat is nervous or in pain. Hissing and growling sounds indicate fear, aggression, or territoriality.</p>



<p>Cats may chirp or chatter when a cat is watching birds or other prey animals, possibly expressing frustration or excitement.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-body-language">Body language</h3>



<p>Cats convey much through their body posture, tail movements, ear positions, and facial expressions.</p>



<ul>
<li>Tail position: A raised tail generally indicates happiness or confidence, while a tucked tail suggests fear or submission. A twitching or lashing tail can signal irritation.</li>

<p>As highlighted in the UC Davis study, scent plays a vital role in cat communication. Cats have scent glands in various body parts, including their cheeks, paws, and base of their tails. They use these to mark territory, identify familiar objects, or signal their reproductive status.</p>

<li>Cheek Rubbing: When cats rub their faces on objects (or people), they are marking them with their scent, claiming them as familiar or safe.</li>



<li>Scratching: Cats also leave scent marks from their paws when they scratch surfaces, serving both as a visual and olfactory territorial marker.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kneading">Kneading</h3>



<p>Kneading is a behavior cats retain from kittenhood, where they would knead their mother’s belly to stimulate milk flow. In adulthood, it's often associated with contentment and may also serve as a way to mark territory with scent glands in their paws.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grooming">Grooming</h3>



<p>Cats groom themselves for cleanliness, but when they groom other cats (or humans), it's a sign of affection and bonding, also known as allogrooming.</p>

Cat communication is driven by bacteria in their anal glands

<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> have revealed how comets could transport life's essential building blocks to exoplanets. The study reshapes our understanding of how life may emerge on other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-discovery-about-earths-formation-raises-probability-of-finding-life-on-other-planets/">planets</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slow-speed-delivery">Slow speed delivery</h2>



<p>The team's key finding is that for comets to effectively deliver organic materials, they must be moving relatively slowly at speeds under 15 kilometers per second. At higher velocities, the vital molecules would not survive the impact due to the extreme speed and temperature, leading to their disintegration.</p>



<p>"In this work, we consider the potential of cometary impacts to deliver <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-a-galaxy-12-billion-light-years-away/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex organic molecules</a> and the prebiotic building blocks required for life to rocky exoplanets," wrote the study authors. "Numerical experiments have demonstrated that for these molecules to survive, impacts at very low velocities are required."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peas-in-a-pod-systems">Peas in a pod systems</h2>



<p>The research suggests that the most likely regions where comets can travel at the right speed are "peas in a pod" systems, where a group of planets orbit closely together. In such systems, a planet's orbit could transfer or "bounce" a comet to another orbit. This would sufficiently reduce its speed for a safe impact.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The slower approach would allow comets to deposit intact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/did-the-building-blocks-of-life-form-inside-of-water-droplets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">molecules</a> upon collision, believed to be the precursors for life. The results of the study suggest that peas in a pod systems are promising places to search for life outside of our solar system, if cometary delivery is important for the origins of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-s-building-blocks">Life's building blocks</h2>



<p>Comets are already known to harbor a variety of life's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-building-blocks-of-life-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">building blocks</a>, including prebiotic molecules. For instance, the Ryugu asteroid samples from 2022 confirmed the presence of amino acids and vitamin B3. </p>



<p>Furthermore, comets contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a robust prebiotic molecule, capable of withstanding high temperatures and possibly surviving atmospheric entry.</p>



<p>“We’re learning more about the atmospheres of exoplanets all the time, so we wanted to see if there are planets where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-the-perseus-cloud/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex molecules</a> could also be delivered by comets,” said study lead author Richard Anslow from Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy. “It’s possible that the molecules that led to life on Earth came from comets, so the same could be true for planets elsewhere in the galaxy.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The researchers do not claim that comets are necessary to the origin of life on Earth or any other planet. Their goal was to define the planetary conditions conducive for successful delivery of complex molecules like HCN by comets.</p>



<p>Comets in our solar system are primarily found in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-earth-like-planet-may-be-hiding-just-beyond-neptune/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kuiper Belt</a> beyond Neptune. The team examined how gravitational pulls from Neptune and Jupiter influence the journey of these comets, leading some to the inner solar system.</p>



<p>“We wanted to test our theories on planets that are similar to our own, as Earth is currently our only example of a planet that supports life,” said Anslow. “What kinds of comets, traveling at what kinds of speed, could deliver intact prebiotic molecules?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-specific-circumstances-nbsp">Specific circumstances&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers used various mathematical models to determine that comets can indeed transport life's precursor molecules, but under specific circumstances.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For planets around sun-like stars, certain criteria like low mass and proximity to other planets in the system enhance the chances of successful delivery. The significance of nearby planets is even greater around lower-mass stars due to typically higher speeds.</p>



<p>“In these tightly-packed systems, each planet has a chance to interact with and trap a comet,” said Anslow. “It’s possible that this mechanism could be how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-at-the-heart-of-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prebiotic molecules</a> end up on planets.”</p>



<p>However, the scenario is more challenging for planets orbiting lower-mass stars like M-dwarfs, particularly in loosely packed systems. These planets often endure high-velocity impacts, creating additional hurdles for life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-nbsp-of-finding-life-s-building-blocks">Implications&nbsp;of finding life's building blocks</h2>



<p>"Our results highlight the importance of understanding a planet’s bulk properties, the stellar-mass and the surrounding planetary environment, as all of these factors individually can drastically affect a comet’s minimum impact velocity," wrote the study authors. This could be useful when determining where to look for life outside the solar system.</p>



<p>“It’s exciting that we can start identifying the type of systems we can use to test different origin scenarios,” said Anslow.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s a different way to look at the great work that’s already been done on Earth. What molecular pathways led to the enormous variety of life we see around us? Are there other planets where the same pathways exist? It’s an exciting time, being able to combine advances in astronomy and chemistry to study some of the most fundamental questions of all.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-comets">More about comets</h2>



<p>Comets offer a fascinating insight into the early solar system and the origins of life. These celestial bodies primarily consist of frozen gases, rock, and dust.</p>



<p>As a comet approaches the Sun, its ice warms and vaporizes, releasing gas and dust that form a glowing head known as the coma. Radiation pressure and solar winds blow this material away, forming the comet's characteristic tails. There are typically two tails. The first is a dust tail (curved and yellowish). The second is an ion tail (straight and bluish), pointing away from the Sun.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comets-and-life-s-building-blocks">Comets and life's building blocks</h3>



<p>Astronomers believe that comets are remnants from the early solar system, formed over 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists refer to them as "icy time capsules."</p>



<p>They mainly consist of water ice, along with frozen carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ammonia. Mixed within this icy conglomerate are dust and rocky particles, making them like dirty snowballs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-types-of-comets">Types of comets</h3>



<p>Short-period comets have orbits that last less than 200 years. They often originate from the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune filled with icy bodies.</p>



<p>Long-period comets have orbits extending over 200 years. Astronomers believe they come from the Oort Cloud, a distant spherical shell surrounding the solar system.</p>

<p>Researchers have identified significant changes in children's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-implant-may-allow-people-to-communicate-through-their-thoughts/">brain</a> structure and function associated with screen time. The experts report that time spent watching television or playing computer games in childhood has measurable and long-term effects on the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study is based on an extensive analysis of 33 neuroimaging studies spanning 23 years and involving over 30,000 children under 12. This comprehensive review highlights both the positive and negative impacts of digital technology on young minds.</p>

<p>While some negative impacts, such as decreased attention, executive control, and cognitive processes, were noted, there were also positive influences.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"About 23 studies reported the impact of digital experiences on the function of children’s brains. Among them, six studies reported positive effects, 15 studies demonstrated negative ones, and two reported mixed results," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Certain studies pointed to improved focus and learning abilities, particularly in the frontal lobe. Video gaming, in particular, was shown to potentially enhance cognitive skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-function-and-structure">Brain function and structure</h2>



<p>Meanwhile, other studies revealed the negative impact of digital experience on children’s brain function, including functional connectivity.</p>



<p>"About nine studies reported the impact of digital experiences on the structure of young children’s brains. Two studies reported no impact, five demonstrated negative ones, and two reported mixed results," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-screen-time-nbsp">Screen time&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“It should be recognized by both educators and caregivers that children's cognitive development may be influenced by their digital experiences,” said study co-author Professor Hui Li from the <a href="https://www.eduhk.hk/zht/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Education University of Hong Kong</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Air filtration systems, considered crucial in reducing the spread of viral infections indoors, may not be as effective as previously thought, according to a study from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of East Anglia</a>.</p>



<p>Air filtration systems gained significant attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as a potential tool to reduce the spread of the virus indoors. They are also used to manage allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions by removing allergens and pollutants from indoor air.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>The research was focused on technologies such as air filtration, germicidal lights, and ionizers. Based on the results, these systems fall short of expectations. The study was led by Professor Paul Hunter and Dr. Julii Brainard from UEA’s Norwich Medical School.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team set out to investigate the real-world effectiveness of air treatment technologies by analyzing 32 studies conducted in practical settings like schools and care homes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weighing-the-costs-and-benefits-nbsp">Weighing the costs and benefits&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Air cleaners are designed to filter pollutants or contaminants out of the air that passes through them," said Professor Hunter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When the Covid pandemic hit, many large companies and governments - including the NHS, the British military, and New York City and regional German governments - investigated installing this type of technology in a bid to reduce airborne virus particles in buildings and small spaces."</p>



<p>“But air treatment technologies can be expensive. So it’s reasonable to weigh up the benefits against costs, and to understand the current capabilities of such technologies.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lack-of-evidence-nbsp">Lack of evidence&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite the initial optimism, the study concludes that there is minimal evidence supporting the effectiveness of these technologies in safeguarding individuals from airborne respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dr. Brainard pointed out that while some air treatment strategies, especially germicidal lights and HEPA filtration, can reduce environmental and surface contamination, they fall short in preventing or reducing illnesses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-little-protection">Little protection</h2>



<p>“The kinds of technologies that we considered included filtration, germicidal lights, ionizers and any other way of safely removing viruses or deactivating them in breathable air," said Dr. Brainard. “In short, we found no strong evidence that air treatment technologies are likely to protect people in real world settings."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"There is a lot of existing evidence that environmental and surface contamination can be reduced by several air treatment strategies, especially germicidal lights and high efficiency particulate air filtration (HEPA).&nbsp; But the combined evidence was that these technologies don’t stop or reduce illness."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed-nbsp">Further research is needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“There was some weak evidence that the air treatment methods reduced likelihood of infection, but this evidence seems biased and imbalanced."</p>



<p>“We strongly suspect that there were some relevant studies with very minor or no effect but these were never published."</p>



<p>Dr. Brainard said the findings are disappointing, but it is vital that public health decision makers have a full picture. “Hopefully those studies that have been done during Covid will be published soon and we can make a more informed judgement about what the value of air treatment may have been during the pandemic.”</p>

The researchers wanted to learn more about this behavior, particularly its timing and motivation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Though we can never read a chimpanzee’s thoughts, we can perhaps start to get an idea of their expectations of resource availability by analyzing the instances in which they arrive at termite mounds and investigate them for fishing viability," said study senior author Dr. Vicky Oelze.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nutrient-sources">Nutrient sources</h2>



<p>Termites serve as a vital nutrient source for chimpanzees. Despite the availability of other food sources in the wet season, chimpanzees exhibit a preference for termite fishing during this period.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-issa-valley-nbsp">Issa Valley&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study was conducted in the Issa Valley, Tanzania. The team analyzed meteorological data and camera trap footage. The researchers also attempted termite fishing with chimpanzee-like tools and techniques.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When I first visited the Issa Valley, I quickly learned that it was more difficult to termite fish than I had expected,” said study co-author Seth Phillips. “It alerted me to the idea that effective foraging for these termite prey might be more complicated than people commonly understand it.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-success-rate-nbsp">Success rate&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Of the 1,924 termite fishing attempts recorded, 363 were successful. The success rate correlated with rainfall, peaking when cumulative rainfall was between 50-200mm and diminishing after 200mm.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This pattern aligns with termite mound activity and dispersal flights, which are predominantly observed in the wet season and reduce significantly after 400mm of rainfall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foraging-cognition-nbsp">Foraging cognition&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“We are currently reviewing camera trap footage of the chimpanzee behaviors at these mounds,” said Phillips. “We want to know how chimps adapt their searching behavior according to seasonal changes."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"For instance, do they investigate termite mounds directly after rainfall after a long dry spell? This data could say something interesting about their foraging cognition as related to tool-use.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tool-use">Tool use</h2>



<p>The team found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-not-the-only-primates-that-experience-menopause/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimpanzees</a> were among the most frequently recorded predators at termite mounds during dispersal flights and they often arrived carrying a tool. According to the researchers, the chimpanzees use tools to termite fish because they can, not because they need to.</p>



<p>In some communities, such as Gombe Stream, chimpanzees fish for termites all year, but this activity peaks in the wet season. The experts noted that some year-round fishers may be benefiting from softer soil or more effective toolsets.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-conclusion">Study conclusion</h2>



<p>"In summary, the results of this study indicate that the seasonality of termite-fishing in the Issa Valley is likely driven in large part by the seasonal reproductive ecology of Macrotermes, which is in turn driven by meteorological factors, in particular cumulative rainfall," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"This explanation aligns with the 'opportunity' hypothesis of cultural variation in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-have-a-much-more-complex-language-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimpanzee</a> tool use behavior in this case on seasonality. Similar research on Macrotermes reproductive life cycle is warranted at other chimpanzee termite-fishing sites in order to clarify differences in seasonal exploitation of this resource."</p>

<p>A new study has uncovered how some plants used nitrogen to survive the cataclysmic events that led to the extinction of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-self-regulated-their-body-temperature/">dinosaurs</a>. Michael Kipp, the lead author of the study and an upcoming assistant professor of Earth and Climate Sciences at <a href="https://duke.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a>, has provided significant insights into this enduring mystery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cycads">Cycads</h2>



<p>Cycads, once a prevalent source of food for grazing dinosaurs, have mostly vanished, with only a few species existing in tropical and subtropical areas today.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Their decline, which began in the late Mesozoic and continued into the early Cenozoic Era, was accelerated by the asteroid impact and volcanic activity marking the K-Pg boundary 66 million years ago. However, unlike their ancient grazers, some cycads managed to survive until the present day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nitrogen-fixing-bacteria-nbsp">Nitrogen-fixing bacteria&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The results of the study suggest that the key to their survival was their symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots. This relationship allowed the plants to extract nitrogen directly from the atmosphere, similar to modern legumes and other nitrogen-fixing plants.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Through this symbiosis, cycads traded sugars with the bacteria in exchange for atmospheric nitrogen, enabling them to thrive in changing environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nitrogen-fixing-plants">Nitrogen-fixing plants</h2>



<p>Kipp's research was based on the knowledge that the tissues of nitrogen-fixing plants can reveal the atmospheric composition of the past. He set out to analyze old plant fossils to gain insights into ancient atmospheres.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This analysis led to the realization that the surviving cycads were the ones that had developed nitrogen-fixing capabilities, unlike their extinct counterparts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolving-plants">Evolving plants</h2>



<p>“Instead of being a story about the atmosphere, we realized this was a story about the ecology of these plants that changed through time,” said Kipp, who spent nearly a decade on this finding, first at UW and then as a postdoctoral researcher at CalTech.</p>



<p>The surviving cycads showed the same nitrogen signatures in their fossils as modern cycads, indicating their reliance on symbiotic bacteria for nitrogen. This contrasted with older, extinct cycad fossils, which lacked this nitrogen signature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The exact benefits of nitrogen fixation for the survival of these cycads remain an area of ongoing research. It might have aided them in adapting to the dramatic climatic changes post-dinosaur extinction or in competing with rapidly proliferating angiosperms, or perhaps both.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Kipp's upcoming role at Duke University will further focus on using the fossil record to unravel Earth's climate history and its potential future.</p>



<p>Much of what we know about ancient atmospheres comes from chemical studies of ancient sea life and sediments, said Kipp. Applying some of those methods to terrestrial plants will add new pieces to this puzzle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japanese astronomers have proposed that an "Earth-like" planet exists much closer to home than the infamous Planet Nine. The research is published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-3881/aceaf0"><em>The Astronomical Journal</em></a>.</p>



<p>For years, the astronomy community has speculated about a ninth planet in our solar system, commonly referred to as Planet Nine.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kuiper-belt-planet">Kuiper Belt planet</h2>



<p>However, researchers from Japan now suggest that there might be another planet, closer than Planet Nine, hiding in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-explains-the-absence-of-super-earths-in-our-solar-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kuiper</a> Belt, a doughnut-shaped ring of objects just beyond Neptune's orbit.</p>



<p>The study was conducted by Patryk Sofia Lykawka of <a href="https://www.kindai.ac.jp/english/">Kindai University</a> in Osaka, Japan, and Takashi Ito of the <a href="https://www.nao.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Astronomical Observatory</a> of Japan in Tokyo.</p>



<p>"We predict the existence of an Earth-like planet," the researchers wrote. "It is plausible that a primordial planetary body could survive in the distant Kuiper Belt as a Kuiper Belt planet (KBP), as many such bodies existed in the early solar system."</p>



<p>The scientists believe that this KBP is up to 500 astronomical units (AU) from the sun. This is 500 times the distance between Earth and the sun, and closer than Planet Nine.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-icy-objects">Icy objects&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to the experts, the KBP could be up to three times as massive as Earth. However, the temperatures are likely too cold to sustain life as we know it.</p>



<p>The Kuiper Belt is known to contain millions of icy objects, referred to as trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), because they are located beyond <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-dark-spot-on-neptune-detected-from-earth-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neptune</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Astronomers believe that TNOs are remnants from the formation of the solar system. They are composed of mixtures of rock, amorphous carbon, and volatile ices such as water and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-massive-amounts-of-methane-gas-spews-from-wildfires/">methane</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The orbits of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) can indicate the existence of an undiscovered planet in the outer solar system," the researchers noted. "These rock and ice bodies are the remnants of planet formation in the outer solar system."f</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gravitational-pull">Gravitational pull</h2>



<p>The research team observed that something larger nearby gravitationally influences some of these objects, giving them "peculiar orbits".</p>



<p>Additionally, the belt has a significant population of high-inclination objects, those with a high tilt as they orbit around the sun. Computer simulations suggested that the hypothetical KBP could be responsible for these effects.</p>



<p>"We determined that an Earth-like planet located on a distant and inclined orbit can explain three fundamental properties of the distant Kuiper Belt," the researchers wrote.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"[These are] a prominent population of TNOs with orbits beyond Neptune's gravitational influence, a significant population of high-inclination objects, and the existence of some extreme objects with peculiar orbits."</p>



<p>The researchers clarify that they predict, rather than confirm, the existence of the KBP, and more research is needed.</p>

<p>They also emphasized that their proposed planet is different from the already-hypothesized Planet Nine, which is much more massive and thought to be located on a more distant orbit.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/super-planet-solar-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planet Nine</a> was first theorized by experts from Caltech in 2014 when they noticed that the orbits of the most distant TNOs were being perturbed or disrupted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Astronomers still claim that this can be explained by the gravitational pull of a ninth planet in our solar system that orbits 20 times farther from our sun than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamond-rain-may-be-common-on-giant-icy-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neptune</a>. However, to date, astronomers only have circumstantial evidence for the existence of Planet Nine. Some aren't convinced it exists at all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-outer-reaches-of-the-solar-system">Outer reaches of the solar system&nbsp;</h2>



<p>If it does exist, Planet Nine is believed to be in the outer reaches of our solar system, beyond the Kuiper Belt, rather than within it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A separate team of researchers suggested in 2020 that Planet Nine could have formed in the inner solar system at its genesis and was then kicked out by interactions with Jupiter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another study published earlier this year suggested that Planet Nine could be surrounded by 20 hot moons, which might help experts locate it.</p>



<p>The new proposal by the Japanese researchers adds another layer of intrigue in the quest to fully understand the outer reaches of our solar system. While the existence of the KBP is yet to be confirmed, its prediction brings us one step closer to unveiling the mysteries of the cosmos.</p>

<p>Climate change, with its increasing temperature variability, poses a significant threat to the survival of bird nestlings, according to a recent study from the <a href="https://www.birds.cornell.edu/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell Lab of Ornithology</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research highlights how early nesting in spring due to warmer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-linked-to-vision-impairment/">temperatures</a> exposes young birds to the risks of cold snaps and heat waves, leading to higher nest failure rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-extremes">Temperature extremes</h2>



<p>Study co-lead author Conor Taff emphasized the crucial distinction between average temperature changes and immediate weather conditions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"When we talk about temperature changes, the focus is mostly on averages," said Taff. "But all creatures, including humans, interact with weather conditions right in the moment, not with long-term averages."</p>



<p>"Even a one or two-day period when it’s really cold or really hot can be incredibly challenging even if the average temperature hasn't changed. Changing temperature averages and temperature variability are two different components of climate change."</p>



<p>This is especially true for birds, as even short periods of extreme cold or heat can be detrimental.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study involved an extensive analysis of 300,000 breeding bird records from 1995 to 2020, submitted to the Cornell Lab's NestWatch project.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By examining the coldest and hottest three-day periods for each nest, the researchers assessed the impact of these extremes on nesting success, defined by the number of nestlings surviving to fledge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-insights">Alarming insights</h2>



<p>"We found that 16 of the 24 species we studied had reduced reproductive success when a cold snap occurred during the incubation or nestling stages," Taff said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Eleven of 24 had reduced success when a heat wave occurred during the breeding season. Aerial insectivores were the most sensitive to temperature extremes, especially cold."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-snaps">Cold snaps</h2>



<p>Cold snaps pose a unique challenge as they reduce insect availability, a critical food source for nestlings. During these periods, adult birds may leave their nests in search of survivable conditions. This makes eggs and nestlings vulnerable to cold and starvation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"It's the nestlings that really get hit hard because they can't regulate their own body temperature yet," said study co-author Ryan Shipley. "Nestlings also grow at an exponential rate during the first week or two of life and if insect activity drops because of a cold snap, the young birds likely won’t survive."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-consequences-nbsp">Long-term consequences&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers also analyzed 100 years of weather data, focusing on the March-August breeding season in the U.S. and Canada. While no clear pattern emerged regarding the timing of temperature extremes, a general warming trend was evident.</p>



<p>"Even if nestlings somehow manage to survive a cold snap or heat wave, there may still be long-term consequences affecting the overall health of the birds," said Shipley. "We're only looking at a brief snapshot during early life and cannot measure long-term health in an unbanded wild population."</p>

<p>Earlier studies on tree swallows by the same authors indicate that during development, temperature significantly influences nestling growth and survival, affecting their chances of successful migration and breeding in subsequent years.</p>

<p>The researchers found that gray wolves’ habitat selection evolved from the early to the late phases of recolonization in a specific area, refining their 2020 habitat modeling originally published by the <a href="https://www.bfn.de/en">Federal Agency for Nature Conservation</a>.</p>

<p>Gray wolves, which prefer habitats with ample cover and distance from human activity, demonstrated these preferences during their return to Germany. The recolonization of habitats they were extirpated from 200 years ago allowed for predictions of future range expansion in Germany.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 2020 study by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), conducted with the Leibniz-IZW team, estimated around 700 to 1,400 potential wolf territories in Germany’s natural areas. The scientists have now delved deeper, testing various spatio-temporal modeling approaches in relation to different phases of recolonization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-conditions">Dynamic conditions</h2>



<p>“There is reason to believe that the recolonization of Germany by the gray wolf is not a so-called stationary process, but is characterized by changing framework conditions,” said senior author Stephanie Kramer-Schadt, the head of the Department of Ecological Dynamics at the Leibniz-IZW.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Kramer-Schadt noted that the recolonization process might not be uniform across Germany due to differences in environmental conditions, like between eastern Germany and the Rhine-Ruhr area. Wolves’ habitat preferences might also vary depending on whether they are in the early or late phase of recolonization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-developing-accurate-models">Developing accurate models</h2>



<p>Dr. Aimara Planillo, the study’s first author, emphasized the importance of these factors for model accuracy. “If models are developed on the basis of the specific environmental conditions of a particular region, they could underestimate the suitability of another, very different region to which such a model might be applied,” she explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dr. Planillo also noted that models based on early recolonization phases might underestimate wolves’ habitat suitability during later phases when they are less selective.</p>

<p>Key findings include that wolves initially select the best habitats during early recolonization but become less selective in later stages.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When recolonizing an area, wolves always secure the best habitats first. It therefore appears that they are considerably more sensitive to environmental variables,” the scientists said. They also found that neighboring second-class sites are colonized in later phases, as demonstrated in eastern Germany.</p>

<p>The study suggests that suitable habitats for wolves are concentrated in the north, northeast, and south of Germany, while lower quality habitats are more common in the west.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The research, which modeled virus death and unemployment rates under different pandemic policies, indicated that while blanket shutdowns reduced fatality rates, a strategy similar to Sweden’s, where people adjusted their behavior voluntarily, was just as effective.</p>

<p>“Both substantial behavioral changes and stringent closures lead to similar patterns of rising unemployment and fewer infections,” the authors reported. <p>However, as the experts argued, “individuals changing their behavior of their own accord - such as by minimizing contacts and less frequent trips to shops or restaurants - could have also minimized deaths.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-023-01747-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Human Behavior</em></a>, utilized data from around 416,000 people in New York City, exploring various scenarios of restrictions and behavior changes. The findings revealed that both strict lockdowns and high rates of behavioral change led to a rise in unemployment and fewer Covid deaths. </p>

<p>“While it is intuitive to expect stricter mandated NPIs to increase unemployment and decrease Covid-19 deaths, it is less apparent that heightened behavioral adaptation would yield similar results.”</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
