A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.



The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.



“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. 



“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”



The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. 



After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.



Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.



Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.



These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.



Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. 



That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. 



Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.



<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.



The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.



None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. 



NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.



The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.



The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.



Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.



Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.



The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.



Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;



“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;



“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. 



Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. 



That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.



If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.



Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.



The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. 



They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.



Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.



PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.



As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.

A groundbreaking study in the field of neuroscience has resulted in the most advanced and comprehensive brain map of an insect to date, bringing researchers one step closer to uncovering the elusive mechanism of thought.&nbsp;



The study, spearheaded by a team of scientists from <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> and the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>, focused on the larval fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, an important model organism in scientific research due to its significant genetic and behavioral similarities to humans.

<h2>Mapping an entire brain</h2>



The process of mapping an entire brain at the cellular level is a daunting task that requires advanced technology and an enormous amount of time. To achieve this feat, researchers must slice the brain into hundreds or thousands of individual tissue samples, then use electron microscopes to image each slice. Following this, they must painstakingly reconstruct the entire brain by piecing together each neuron in the correct position.



The larval fruit fly was chosen for this study due to its fundamental biological similarities to humans, including a comparable genetic foundation. Additionally, the fruit fly exhibits complex learning and decision-making behaviors, making it an ideal model organism for neuroscience research. The practical advantage of working with the fruit fly is its relatively small brain, which can be imaged and reconstructed within a manageable timeframe.



The research team meticulously charted and categorized each neuron by its role in the brain, discovering that the most active circuits were those connected to the learning center. The methods developed during this study can be applied to any brain connectome project.&nbsp;



Vogelstein even offered their code to other researchers attempting to map larger animal brains, predicting that scientists may take on the challenge of mapping a mouse brain within the next decade.



Edda Thiels, a program director in NSF's Division of Biological Infrastructure, highlights the far-reaching impact of this study: "Having connectomes, such as the fly brain connectome developed here, for diverse organisms will open the brain up to everyone - schoolchildren, citizen scientists, researchers, and others curious about the inner workings of the brain."&nbsp;

Elephants are known for their intelligence and unique trunk skills, but a recent discovery has pushed the limits of our understanding of these majestic creatures.&nbsp;



A study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2023.02.076">Current Biology</a> on April 10 describes fascinating behavior exhibited by an Asian elephant named Pang Pha, who lives at the Berlin Zoo. Pang Pha has learned to peel bananas - a skill she picked up all on her own, and one that has not been observed in elephants before.



The study's authors believe that the female elephant most likely learned this unusual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rats-on-tropical-islands-change-reef-fish-behavior/">behavior</a> by observing her caretakers peel bananas for her. According to the researchers, this finding in a single elephant suggests that elephants as a species possess advanced cognitive and manipulative abilities.

Michael Brecht of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin's Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience, a co-author of the study, remarked: “We discovered a very unique behavior. What makes Pang Pha's banana peeling so unique is a combination of factors - skillfulness, speed, individuality, and the putatively human origin - rather than a single behavioral element.”



Interestingly, Pang Pha does not peel every banana she consumes. Like other elephants, she eats green or yellow bananas whole and rejects brown bananas altogether. However, when it comes to yellow bananas with brown spots - the kind typically used for making banana bread - she peels them first.



Brecht and his colleagues, Lena Kaufmann, also at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Andreas Ochs from the Berlin Zoological Garden, were initially puzzled by Pang Pha's selective banana-peeling behavior. They discovered that she only peels yellow-brown bananas, which helped their research gain traction.



When presented with a group of yellow-brown bananas, Pang Pha alters her behavior, eating as many bananas as possible whole and saving the last one to peel later. None of the other elephants at the Berlin Zoo have been observed engaging in this behavior, making it an exceptionally rare occurrence.



The researchers speculate that Pang Pha acquired the skill of peeling bananas through observational learning from her human caretakers, who hand-raised her at the Berlin Zoo. While they never explicitly taught her to peel bananas, they did feed her peeled ones.&nbsp;



Previous reports on African elephants have shown that they can interpret human pointing gestures and classify people into ethnic groups. However, complex human-derived manipulation behaviors, such as banana-peeling, are considered extremely rare.



The findings in Pang Pha's case indicate that elephants, in general, possess impressive cognitive abilities and manipulative skills. “Elephants have truly remarkable trunk skills and that their behavior is shaped by experience," said Brecht.



The fact that Pang Pha alone picked up on banana peeling has prompted the researchers to question whether such habits are typically passed on through elephant families. They are now exploring other sophisticated trunk behaviors, including tool use, to gain a deeper understanding of these extraordinary animals.

As the United States grapples with an aging nuclear power infrastructure, policymakers face the tough decision of whether to retire or retrofit the reactors that currently generate nearly 20% of the nation's electricity. With 92 reactors in operation, the US boasts the largest nuclear fleet worldwide, but many of these facilities have been running for over 50 years and are nearing the end of their expected lifetimes. While nuclear energy is considered a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, a new study by <a href="https://www.mit.edu/">MIT</a> researchers adds another dimension to this debate: the impact on air quality.



The study, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/nenergy/">Nature Energy</a>, examines a hypothetical scenario in which all nuclear power plants in the US are shut down and replaced by other energy sources, such as coal, natural gas, and renewables, for an entire year. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-linked-to-a-higher-risk-of-stroke/">air pollution</a> would indeed increase as fossil fuel usage ramps up to compensate for the loss of nuclear power. The team quantified this impact, estimating that an additional 5,200 pollution-related deaths could occur over a single year as a direct consequence of the increased air pollution.



If more renewable energy sources were to become available to the grid, as anticipated by 2030, air pollution would be mitigated, but not entirely eliminated. Even under a scenario with significantly more renewable energy, the researchers found a slight increase in air pollution in some regions, resulting in 260 pollution-related deaths over one year. The study also highlights that Black or African American communities, who disproportionately reside near fossil-fuel plants, would be most exposed to the increased pollution levels.



Lead author Lyssa Freese, a graduate student in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), emphasized that this research adds another layer to the ongoing debate about the environmental health and social impacts of nuclear power plant shutdowns. The conversation surrounding these shutdowns has primarily revolved around local risks due to accidents, mining, and long-term climate impacts.&nbsp;



"In the debate over keeping nuclear power plants open, air quality has not been a focus of that discussion," added study author Noelle Selin, a professor in MIT's Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) and EAPS. She further explained that the air pollution caused by fossil fuel plants is so harmful that any increase, such as that resulting from a nuclear shutdown, will have significant impacts on some populations more than others.



<h2 id="h-fallout-of-future-nuclear-power-phase-outs">Fallout of future nuclear power phase-outs</h2>



As nuclear power plants have closed in the past, fossil fuel use has increased to compensate for the loss of electricity generation. This phenomenon can be observed in historical instances such as the 1985 closure of reactors in the Tennessee Valley which prompted a spike in coal use and the 2012 shutdown of a plant in California leading to an increase in natural gas consumption. Similarly, in Germany, where nuclear power has almost completely been phased out, coal-fired power initially increased to fill the gap.



Observing these trends, a team of researchers from MIT set out to investigate how the U.S. energy grid would respond if nuclear power were entirely phased out. “We wanted to think about what future changes were expected in the energy grid," said Freese. "We knew that coal use was declining, and there was a lot of work already looking at the impact of what that would have on air quality. But no one had looked at air quality and nuclear power, which we also noticed was on the decline.”



To analyze the impact of a nuclear power phase-out on air quality and public health, the team utilized an energy grid dispatch model developed by their colleague Jenn. The model simulates the production of every power plant in the country, running continuously to estimate the hourly energy demands in 64 regions across the nation. Functioning similarly to the actual energy market, the model prioritizes plants producing the cheapest energy at any given time, adjusting their production levels up or down accordingly.



The researchers fed the model available data on each plant's changing emissions and energy costs throughout an entire year. They then ran the model under different scenarios: an energy grid with no nuclear power, a baseline grid similar to today's grid that includes nuclear power, and a grid with no nuclear power that also incorporates additional renewable sources expected to be added by 2030.



Each simulation was combined with an atmospheric chemistry model to simulate how each plant's various emissions travel around the country. The research team overlaid these tracks onto maps of population density to examine the impact on populations exposed to pollution. The risk of premature death was calculated for individuals in the path of pollution based on their degree of exposure.



<h2>System response shows unintended consequences</h2>

“Climate change and population growth mean that water is becoming a more precious resource in big cities, but we have shown that social inequality is the biggest problem for poorer people getting access to water for their everyday needs," said study co-author Professor Hannah Cloke, a hydrologist at the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk/">University of Reading</a>.

According to the scientists, the primary factors driving the expansion of this area, known as the Subtropical Gyre, are shifting wind patterns and ongoing warming. Warmer water masses require more space, contributing to the rise in sea levels.&nbsp;

Future sea-level rise



Predictions for future sea-level rise vary depending on the emission scenarios, climate models, and timeframes considered. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (2021), global mean sea level is projected to continue rising over the 21st century, with different rates depending on the greenhouse gas emission scenarios.



Under a low-emission scenario (SSP1-1.9), the report estimates a global mean sea-level rise of 0.28 to 0.55 meters (11 to 22 inches) by 2100 compared to the 1995-2014 average.&nbsp;



In a moderate-emission scenario (SSP2-4.5), the projected rise ranges from 0.34 to 0.65 meters (13 to 26 inches). However, under a high-emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), sea levels could rise between 0.63 and 1.02 meters (25 to 40 inches).

Predictions beyond 2100 remain uncertain, but under most scenarios, sea-level rise is expected to continue for centuries. Over time, many chloroplast genes migrated to the plant nuclear genome, but some essential genes remained within the chloroplasts.



In this study, the research team focused on one such gene, a bacterial genetic legacy called a sigma factor (SIG5). In bacteria, comparable sigma factors are known to contribute to temperature responses. By conducting experiments in controlled laboratory conditions, the researchers manipulated light exposure and subjected plants to periods of chilling to better understand the role of SIG5 in plant cold tolerance.



Studying the intricate rhythms of the plant biological or circadian clock can be challenging. However, by removing plants from their natural day-night cycle, researchers have gained valuable insights into the free-running rhythms of these clocks. Similar to humans, plant circadian clocks are aligned to the 24-hour cycle, serving as an internal timekeeper within cells and regulating a wide range of essential biological processes.



Recent experiments conducted by a collaborative team from the John Innes Centre, the University of Bristol, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation in Japan, and Durham University, have revealed the sensitivity of the SIG5 gene to cold temperatures early in the morning, regulated by the circadian clock.&nbsp;



The researchers believe that SIG5 operates as part of a signaling network connecting the plant nucleus to the chloroplasts, which in turn regulates activities that protect the plant against harmful environmental effects.



“If the temperature is cold, then some enzymes involved in photosynthesis break down quickly,” explained Professor Dodd. “So, we think the process that is controlled by the nucleus signals into the chloroplast to make more of these proteins. When the plant sees cold and light at the same time, they need to switch on this signaling process from nucleus to chloroplasts to make more of these photosynthesis proteins.”



The role of the biological clock in this process is to act like a gate that either allows or blocks the signal, a phenomenon known as circadian gating.&nbsp;



“Plants could have evolved to be particularly responsive to it being light and cold, like a spring morning, because these are the conditions that damage the photosynthetic system," said Professor Dodd. "At some point during evolution, they have selected for this sensitivity and co-opted this ancient mechanism. Like many such processes in plants, this one turns out to be under the control of the circadian clock.”



Having demonstrated the effectiveness of this mechanism in laboratory settings, the researchers' next step is to examine its impact in the field. One potential application of this discovery is to modify the mechanism to further enhance cold tolerance, which could enable the cultivation of cold-sensitive plants, such as maize, in more northern latitudes.



This groundbreaking research not only enhances our understanding of plant biology but also has significant implications for the future of agriculture. However, according to a recent study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0282725">PLoS ONE</a>, children exposed to pet cats or indoor dogs during fetal development and early infancy tend to have fewer food allergies in comparison to other children.



The scientists used data from the <a href="https://www.env.go.jp/chemi/ceh/en/">Japan Environment and Children’s Study</a> (JECS) – a nationwide, prospective birth cohort – to investigate the associations between exposure to various types of pets during fetal development and early infancy and the incidence of food allergies in 66,215 children for whom such data was available. Among the participants, approximately 22 percent were exposed to indoor cats and dogs in their early years and, in some cases, even before birth.&nbsp;



The analysis revealed a significantly reduced incidence of food allergies among children exposed to indoor pets, but no significant difference in the case of those growing in households with outdoor dogs. Moreover, different pet species seemed to reduce the incidence of allergies to different types of foods. For example, children exposed to indoor dogs were less likely to experience egg, milk, and nut allergies, while those exposed to cats were less likely to develop egg, wheat, and soybean allergies. Surprisingly though, children exposed to hamsters (0.9 percent of the cohort) had a significantly greater incidence of nut allergies.



Although the study had several limitations - including the use of self-reported data relying on the accurate recall of participants, and the impossibility to determine whether the association between pet exposure and food allergy incidence was causative or merely correlational – these findings suggest that exposure to pets may be extremely beneficial to children, leading to better health outcomes. However, further research into the mechanisms behind childhood food allergies and how they are influenced by exposure to pets is needed.

Sargassum is a rootless and buoyant algae that forms large floating mats on the ocean surface. It is an important habitat for marine species, providing food, refuge, and breeding grounds.



<h2>What is Sargassum?</h2>



First written about by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Sargassum is found in the Sargasso Sea and other parts of the Atlantic Ocean. Like other floating marine vegetation, Sargassum absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and converts it into organic carbon, which makes it an important tool in mitigating the effects of greenhouse gases.



However, when Sargassum collects along coastlines, it can emit toxins like hydrogen sulphide, which produces a pungent smell. These toxins can cause headaches, eye irritation, and upset stomachs, depending on the quantity. Mounds of algae on beaches can harm marine ecosystems and disrupt recreation and fishing, costing communities millions.



<h3>History of Sargassum Blooms</h3>



Scientists have been tracking Sargassum blooms since 2011, but this year's bloom is estimated to be the largest ever, collectively spanning more than 8800 km from the shores of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico and weighing 10 million tonnes.&nbsp;



According to Chuanmin Hu, a professor of oceanography at the <a href="https://www.usf.edu/">University of South Florida</a>, the size of this bloom is due to the convergence of multiple factors, including changes in ocean currents, the amount of nutrients in the water, and the winds.



In an interview with CNN, Professor Hu said: "It's a combination of things we've never seen before." He went on to explain that the Gulf of Mexico is the final destination for many of the world's rivers, which carry nutrients that can fuel the growth of Sargassum. The increase in ocean temperature due to climate change is also a factor, as Sargassum thrives in warm water.

According to <a href="https://myfwc.com/">Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission</a>: "The severity of the impacts of the Sargassum landing events on Florida's coastline depends on many factors, including the timing, location, quantity, and duration of the event."



"We need to prepare for the worst-case scenario," said Professor Hu. While it's impossible to predict exactly when or where the Sargassum will make landfall, experts are keeping a close eye on the situation and working to better understand this unique phenomenon.



<h2>Sargassum&nbsp;Seaweed Belt Seen from Space</h2>



The <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> (ESA) is collaborating with CLS-NovaBlue Environment to monitor floating Sargassum using data from Earth observation satellites as part of ESA’s Earth Observation Science for Society initiative. Sargassum is a type of seaweed that is found in the Sargasso Sea, which is located in the western North Atlantic Ocean.



To better understand the extent and evolution of the Sargassum belt stretching across the Atlantic Ocean, multispectral satellite measurements from Sentinel-2 at 10m resolution have been used to capture the density and size of Sargassum levels since 2011. This is complemented by radar altimeter measurements from Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 satellites that provide access to geostrophic ocean currents.

The Ocean Virtual Laboratory, which allows oceanographers to discover the world’s oceans, has also been monitoring the Sargassum. The virtual lab uses more than 350 datasets, Copernicus Sentinel data, in situ measurements, and numerical model outputs to provide an unprecedented view of our oceans and improve scientific understanding of ocean and coastal processes leading to the Sargassum.



<h3>How Sargassum is Monitored</h3>



The Sargassum mats, which are being monitored, could soon threaten beaches along the Florida Keys, Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, and the eastern Caribbean. The trajectory of ocean currents that are leading the Sargassum westward can be monitored using satellite data, providing valuable insight into the extent of the threat.



“Since 2011, a change in the density and in size of Sargassum levels has been seen which can be monitored from space in different ways,” says ESA. With the help of satellite data, oceanographers are gaining a better understanding of ocean and coastal processes leading to the Sargassum and are able to provide an unprecedented view of our oceans.



As our planet continues to change, it is important to monitor and understand the impacts on our oceans. The collaboration between ESA and CLS-NovaBlue Environment is a great example of how satellite data can be used to monitor our planet and improve our understanding of the natural world.

In a bid to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Biden administration is reportedly planning to implement some of the most stringent auto pollution limits in the world.&nbsp;



According to anonymous sources speaking to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/">New York Times</a>, these new regulations aim to ensure that all-electric vehicles account for as much as 67 percent of new passenger cars sold in the United States by 2032. This ambitious target would far surpass President Biden's previous goal of having all-electric cars make up half of those sold by 2030.



The move would represent a significant leap for the United States, where only 5.8 percent of vehicles sold in the previous year were all-electric. The proposed regulations would place the US at the forefront of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases generated by cars, a major contributor to climate change. The European Union, Canada, and Britain have already enacted or proposed vehicle emissions standards expected to phase out the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035.



However, the proposed regulation presents a considerable challenge for automakers. Most major car companies have already invested heavily in electric vehicles, but few have committed to the levels envisioned by the Biden administration.&nbsp;



Manufacturers have encountered supply chain issues that have delayed production, and there is uncertainty as to whether consumers will purchase enough electric vehicles to make up the majority of new car sales within a decade.



Michael S. Regan, the administrator of the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA), is expected to announce the proposed limits on tailpipe emissions in Detroit on Wednesday. The requirements are intended to ensure that electric cars represent between 54 and 60 percent of all new cars sold in the US by 2030, with that figure rising to 64 to 67 percent by 2032. These figures were shared by sources familiar with the matter who requested anonymity.



To significantly increase the adoption of electric vehicles in the US, other changes would be necessary, including constructing millions of new charging stations, overhauling electric grids to accommodate the power needs of these chargers, and securing supplies of minerals and other materials needed for batteries.



The proposed regulation, which will go through a public comment period and may be altered before becoming final, is likely to face legal challenges and could become an issue in the 2024 presidential campaign. A future administration could undo or weaken the regulation.



John Bozzella, president of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, commented on the scale of the undertaking, stating: “It is nothing short of a complete transformation of the automotive industrial base and the automotive market.”



Maria Michalos, an EPA spokeswoman, did not confirm the new targets but stated that the agency was working on new standards as directed by the president to “accelerate the transition to a zero-emissions transportation future, protecting people and the planet.”



The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act has already helped stimulate demand for electric vehicles by providing up to $7,500 in tax incentives for car buyers, as well as billions in incentives for battery manufacturing and critical mineral processing and mining.



The US is the second biggest polluter on the planet, and transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gases generated by the country. Rapidly phasing out gasoline-powered cars in favor of electric models would help President Biden achieve his pledge to cut the country's emissions in half by 2030 and effectively eliminate them by the middle of the century.



This proposed auto emissions rule is even more demanding than the target laid out by President Biden in a 2021 White House speech, where he called for federal policies to ensure that half of new cars sold would be all-electric by 2030.

An intergalactic "monster" is hurtling through space, leaving behind a never-before-seen "contrail" of newborn stars. The supermassive black hole weighs as much as 20 million suns and travels so quickly that if it were in our solar system, it could travel from Earth to the Moon in just 14 minutes.&nbsp;



The trail it has left behind is almost 200,000 light-years long, twice the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy, and is the result of a rare game of galactic billiards among three massive black holes.



Instead of gobbling up stars ahead of it, as a cosmic Pac-Man would, this supermassive black hole is plowing into gas in front of it to trigger new star formation along a narrow corridor.

"We think we're seeing a wake behind the black hole where the gas cools and is able to form stars. So, we're looking at star formation trailing the black hole," explained Pieter van Dokkum of <a href="https://www.yale.edu/">Yale University</a>.



The black hole is traveling so fast that it is unable to stop for a snack, so it triggers new star formation as it moves through gas. This phenomenon has never been seen before, but it was captured by accident using <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/main/index.html">NASA's Hubble Space Telescope</a>. The trail must have lots of new stars, given that it is almost half as bright as the host galaxy it is linked to.



The black hole lies at one end of the column, which stretches back to its parent galaxy. There is a remarkably bright knot of ionized oxygen at the outermost tip of the column. Researchers believe gas is probably being shocked and heated from the motion of the black hole hitting the gas, or it could be radiation from an accretion disk around the black hole.



"This is pure serendipity that we stumbled across it," said van Dokkum. He was initially looking for globular star clusters in a nearby dwarf galaxy when he stumbled upon the trail. "I was just scanning through the Hubble image, and then I noticed that we have a little streak. I immediately thought, 'oh, a cosmic ray hitting the camera detector and causing a linear imaging artifact.' When we eliminated cosmic rays, we realized it was still there. It didn't look like anything we've seen before."



Van Dokkum and his team did follow-up spectroscopy with the W. M. Keck Observatories in Hawaii because the phenomenon was so unusual. He describes the star trail as "quite astonishing, very, very bright and very unusual." This led to the conclusion that he was looking at the aftermath of a black hole flying through a halo of gas surrounding the host galaxy.



This intergalactic phenomenon is likely the result of multiple collisions of supermassive black holes. According to astronomers, the first two galaxies merged, perhaps 50 million years ago. This brought together two supermassive black holes at their centers. They whirled around each other as a binary black hole.



Then another galaxy came along with its own supermassive black hole. This led to a chaotic and unstable configuration, with the three black holes mixing it up.&nbsp;



One of the black holes robbed momentum from the other two and was thrown out of the host galaxy. The original binary may have remained intact, or the new interloper black hole may have replaced one of the two that were in the original binary and kicked out the previous companion.



The binary black holes and the single black hole displayed opposite directions when the latter departed. Researchers have spotted a feature on the opposite end of the host galaxy, which they suspect to be the runaway binary black hole.&nbsp;



Supporting this notion is the absence of any active black hole at the center of the galaxy. To confirm the presence of the black hole, NASA plans to conduct additional observations with the James Webb Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory.



NASA's upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope boasts a wide-angle view of the universe with Hubble's superior resolution. The telescope is designed for surveying, and scientists anticipate that it may detect more rare and unlikely "star streaks" in other parts of the universe.&nbsp;



According to van Dokkum, machine learning algorithms will likely be necessary to identify these peculiar shapes among the vast amounts of astronomical data collected.

Runaway black hole creates a trail of stars

A recent study has revealed that monk parakeets may lose their social standing if they are separated from their flock for as little as eight days. The study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/beheco/arad015">Behavioral Ecology,</a> was conducted by a team led by postdoctoral researcher Annemarie van der Marel at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, who observed and studied three groups of captive monk parakeets in 2021 and 2022.



The researchers identified each bird's status in the dominance hierarchy of their respective flocks by observing their interactions and quantifying their rank using networks of aggression. According to van der Marel, monk parakeets are "loud" and "very affiliative toward some members of the group but can be quite grumpy towards others." She also noted that there is a lot of social drama among these birds.



The field crew recorded over 100,000 fights over two years of experimentation, which indicates that monk parakeets are quite feisty and fight constantly, although they generally do not have "knock-down, drag-out fights." Rather, they are constantly squabbling, with one bird threatening to peck another, causing the other bird to flee before the interaction becomes physical. This behavior is called a displacement, and it is clear who the winners and losers are, according to Elizabeth Hobson, a behavioral ecologist and assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati.



Once the researchers established the dominance hierarchy in the social groups, they removed birds of different social standing for eight days before returning them and observing their reintegration to the flock. The researchers predicted that if there was something intrinsic about the bird that gave it a high rank, it should have been able to retake its former rank easily upon returning.



However, the experts found that high-ranked birds had a much more difficult reintegration into their former groups. While lower-ranked birds also experienced a decline in status, it was not nearly as dramatic as in higher-ranked birds. "The group treats them very differently," Hobson said. "In general, when we reintroduce the top-ranked bird, the group responds with a lot of aggression towards that reintroduced bird. A lot of bullying happens."



Hobson further noted that it's possible that the lower-ranked birds are not perceived as a threat to the other birds' standing, so they are not targeted as aggressively upon their return.&nbsp;



Study co-author Chelsea Carminito, a doctoral student at the <a href="https://www.uc.edu/">University of Cincinnati</a>, added that when a bird is removed, there is a power vacuum, and everything shifts to accommodate it. When that bird suddenly comes back, the birds at the top don't want to relinquish their top rank and will defend their position.



Carminito is studying the behavior of monk parakeets to learn ways to improve their care and the care of other social birds in captivity, zoos, and research centers. "My interest is how to reduce stress in captive situations when you have to remove a bird," she said. The findings of this study could be crucial in developing strategies to reduce stress in captive situations and ensuring the welfare of captive birds.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Scientists are transforming chocolate into a functional food by infusing it with probiotics and prebiotics, aiming to create a treat that satisfies cravings while supporting gut health. 



The challenge lies in maintaining chocolate's beloved texture and flavor while adding health benefits.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
