Clocking more than 52 hours a week may do more than sap energy - it appears to alter the architecture of the brain itself.



A new imaging study of healthcare staff shows enlarged volumes in regions tied to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decision-making</a> and emotional control among people who consistently work long hours, hinting at structural shifts that could influence mental well-being.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-brains-work-overtime">When brains work overtime</h2>



Long schedules have long been blamed for higher rates of heart trouble, metabolic disease, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-depression-often-hold-tightly-to-self-doubt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a>. Yet scientists have struggled to identify what relentless work does to the brain's neural tissue.



To probe that question, a team of Korean researchers led by <a href="https://www.yonsei.ac.kr/en_sc/index.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yonsei University</a> invited volunteers from the <a href="https://www.kci.go.kr/kciportal/ci/sereArticleSearch/ciSereArtiView.kci?sereArticleSearchBean.artiId=ART002827338" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gachon Regional Occupational Cohort Study</a> to undergo high-resolution MRI scans. 



The final sample included 110 hospital workers, of whom 32 routinely surpassed the 52-hour threshold set by South Korea’s labor law, while 78 logged standard weeks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chronic-overtime-and-brain-volume">Chronic overtime and brain volume</h2>



Those in the overwork group were generally younger, held their jobs for fewer years and possessed more advanced degrees - reflecting the junior resident physicians and research fellows who often shoulder extended shifts.



After excluding scans of poor quality, the team used voxel-based morphometry, which compares minute differences in grey-matter density, and atlas-based analysis, which maps brain areas against a reference template. 



The goal was to see whether chronic overtime corresponded to measurable differences in brain volume.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-excessive-work-alters-brain-regions">Excessive work alters brain regions</h2>



Analyses converged on several hotspots in the frontal lobe and deeper cortical folds. The atlas comparison revealed a striking 19 percent increase in the middle frontal gyrus among overworked participants.



This ridge, situated just above the temples, contributes to working memory, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neurons-coordinate-group-activities-for-language-processing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language processing</a>, and top-down attention - skills heavily taxed by time-pressured clinical duties.



Voxel mapping then highlighted sixteen additional sectors, among them the superior frontal gyrus, a planner’s hub for deliberation and goal setting, and the insula, the hidden lobe that integrates bodily signals with emotional awareness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strain-shows-up-in-tissue">Strain shows up in tissue</h2>



Together, the pattern suggests that brains steeped in prolonged stress from work may add circuitry - or at least grow existing circuitry - in areas that juggle competing priorities and regulate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-timing-has-a-powerful-effect-on-our-mood/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mood</a>.



While these changes might sound beneficial, the authors caution against rosy interpretations. “Notably, the increased brain volumes observed in overworked individuals may reflect neuroadaptive responses to chronic occupational stress, although the exact mechanisms remain speculative,” the authors wrote.



In other words, tissue growth could hint at swelling or rewiring driven by persistent strain rather than healthy development.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-brain-changes">Unraveling the brain changes</h2>



Because the project offers only a snapshot, it cannot show whether large frontal lobes pre-existed and perhaps helped certain workers tolerate marathon schedules, or whether the extra hours sculpted the tissue over time.



“While the results should be interpreted cautiously due to the exploratory nature of this pilot study, they represent a meaningful first step in understanding the relationship between overwork and brain health,” the researchers wrote.



Either way, enlarged control centers do not guarantee sharper performance. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enlarged-brains-impaired-function">Enlarged brains, impaired function</h2>



Earlier behavioral research links excessive duty hours with memory lapses, poor emotional regulation, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-protects-against-work-stress-burnout/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">burnout</a>, echoing the executive and limbic roles of the structures that expanded here.



“The observed changes in brain volume may provide a biological basis for the cognitive and emotional challenges often reported in overworked individuals," noted the study authors. 



"Future longitudinal and multi-modal neuroimaging studies are warranted to confirm these findings and elucidate the underlying mechanisms."



Only repeated scans over months or years can reveal whether brain size shrinks back once work hours normalize or whether the alterations become permanent scars.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-global-toll-of-extra-shifts">The global toll of extra shifts</h2>



The <a href="https://www.ilo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Labor Organization</a> estimates that overwork kills more than 800,000 people every year, often via stroke or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart disease</a>. 



Yet policymakers rarely consider neurological fallout when drafting hours-of-service rules. The present evidence, although preliminary, hints that overtime may leave an imprint visible on MRI long before bodily organs fail.



To reduce that risk, experts urge both individual pacing and systemic reform. Employers can rotate demanding tasks, enforce true off-duty periods and foster cultures that prize mental restoration as much as productivity. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overwork-and-brain-health">Overwork and brain health</h2>



Governments, for their part, might revisit thresholds that define a legal workweek, ensuring that statutory limits align with current science.



“The results underscore the importance of addressing overwork as an occupational health concern and highlight the need for workplace policies that mitigate excessive working hours.” the authors said.



In practice, that could mean capping consecutive night shifts, mandating recovery sleep for trainees, or offering mental-health check-ins for employees in unavoidable crunch cycles such as pandemic surges.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-the-workweek">Rethinking the workweek</h2>



Confirming the new findings will require broader cohorts - ideally across industries, age ranges, and cultural settings - and techniques that assay brain chemistry as well as anatomy.



Wearable devices that track <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-is-essential-for-memory-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep</a>, stress hormones, and mood could enrich MRI snapshots with day-to-day context. Combining those streams may reveal thresholds at which adaptive growth tips into harmful swelling or connectivity loss.



For now, the message is plain. The brain is plastic, reshaping itself to meet the demands placed upon it. 



Prolonged weeks of intense problem solving and emotional labor appear to leave a signature in the very regions that power those abilities, raising the stakes for employers and legislators alike to keep workloads within healthy bounds.

The humble aluminum found in soda cans shows promising potential as a sustainable source of clean energy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soda-cans-and-clean-energy">Soda cans and clean energy</h2>



Experts at the <a href="https://www.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT) discovered that when the aluminum in soda cans is exposed in its pure form and mixed with seawater, the solution produces hydrogen.



This gas fuels engines and cells without producing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-carbon-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon emissions</a>. Intriguingly enough, this novel reaction is expedited significantly when caffeine is added to the mix.



In a study conducted at MIT, the researchers demonstrated their eco-friendly innovation by dropping pretreated aluminum pellets into a beaker of filtered seawater. 



Our familiar pure aluminum was scrubbed with a rare-metal alloy to allow it to interact with the seawater and generate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-hydrogen-energy-production-just-got-a-lot-easier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrogen</a>. The salt ions in the seawater could attract and recover the alloy, which was then reused in the hydrogen production process.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-caffeine">The role of caffeine</h2>



While the seawater and aluminum reaction was successful, it took place at a relatively sluggish pace. 



However, when coffee grounds were introduced to the solution, the scientists were taken aback at how rapidly the reaction progressed. 



They discovered that a minor concentration of imidazole, an active component of caffeine, could streamline the reaction to just five minutes, a noticeable improvement from the original two hours.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clean-energy-on-the-go">Clean energy on the go</h2>



The researchers are working on developing a small reactor that could function on a marine vessel or underwater vehicle. This vessel would carry aluminum pellets along with the rare-metal alloy and some caffeine.



The reactor would periodically be supplied with these ingredients and the readily available seawater to produce hydrogen.



The implications are significant. “This is very interesting for maritime applications like boats or underwater vehicles because you wouldn’t have to carry around seawater - it’s readily available,” said study lead author Aly Kombargi, a PhD student at MIT.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overcoming-challenges-and-limitations">Overcoming challenges and limitations </h2>



While this innovation appears game-changing, the researchers hit some roadblocks along the way.



When aluminum interacts with water, it generates hydrogen and heat, but this reaction can only occur if the aluminum remains in its pure form. 



The moment it comes in contact with oxygen, such as in the air, it creates a protective oxide layer that prevents further reactions. This elusive layer is why hydrogen doesn't bubble up when you drop a soda can in the water.



The team successfully overcame this roadblock by pretreating the aluminum with a rare-metal alloy of gallium and indium, successfully removing the oxide layer.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-sustainable-energy">The future of sustainable energy</h2>



The team now plans to test this eco-friendly technology in marine and underwater vehicles. 



In addition, a future where trucks, trains, and even planes can be powered by aluminum and seawater might not be too far away.



“The next part is to figure out how to use this for trucks, trains, and maybe airplanes. Perhaps, instead of having to carry water as well, we could extract water from the ambient humidity to produce hydrogen. That’s down the line,” noted Kombargi.

New research from <a href="https://www.vt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virginia Tech</a> reveals that SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-lockdowns-had-unexpected-impacts-on-wildlife-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19</a>, is prevalent among various wildlife species. 



The study found the virus in six common backyard species and detected antibodies in five of these species, with exposure rates ranging from 40 to 60 percent.&nbsp;



Genetic tracking confirmed both the presence of the virus and unique viral mutations closely matching human variants, supporting human-to-animal transmission.



Animals near hiking trails and high-traffic public areas had the highest exposure rates, indicating that human activities play a significant role in transmitting the COVID virus to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-transmit-more-viruses-to-animals-than-we-catch-from-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a>. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-novel-covid-virus-mutations-in-wildlife-nbsp">Novel COVID virus mutations in wildlife&nbsp;</h2>



Scientists from the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, the Department of Biological Sciences in Virginia Tech’s College of Science, and the Fralin Life Sciences Institute conducted this study, emphasizing the need for broad surveillance due to the identification of novel COVID virus mutations in wildlife. These mutations could be more harmful and transmissible, posing challenges for vaccine development.



However, the researchers stressed that there was no evidence of the virus being transmitted from animals to humans. People should not fear typical interactions with wildlife, as noted by Carla Finkielstein, professor of biological sciences at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute.&nbsp;



“The virus can jump from humans to wildlife when we are in contact with them, like a hitchhiker switching rides to a new, more suitable host,” said Finkielstein. She emphasized the virus’s goal to spread and survive, adapting and mutating to thrive in new hosts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-widespread-covid-exposure-among-wildlife">Widespread COVID exposure among wildlife</h2>



Previous studies had primarily identified SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-is-circulating-and-evolving-rapidly-in-white-tailed-deer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white-tailed deer</a> and feral mink. The Virginia Tech study expanded the number of species examined, providing a broader understanding of virus transmission to and among wildlife. 



This data suggests widespread exposure in wildlife, particularly in areas with high human activity, which serve as points of contact for cross-species transmission. Signs of the virus were found in deer mice, opossums, raccoons, groundhogs, rabbits, and Eastern red bats.&nbsp;



“This study was really motivated by seeing a large, important gap in our knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a broader wildlife community,” said Joseph Hoyt, assistant professor of biological sciences and corresponding author on the paper.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



The research team collected 798 nasal and oral swabs across Virginia from animals either live-trapped and released or treated by wildlife rehabilitation centers. They also obtained 126 blood samples from six species.&nbsp;



Locations varied from urban areas to remote wilderness to compare virus presence in areas with different levels of human activity. Notably, two mice at the same site on the same day had the exact same variant, indicating possible transmission from the same human or between the mice.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-humans-pass-covid-to-wildlife">How do humans pass COVID to wildlife?</h2>



Researchers remain uncertain about how the virus is transmitted from humans to animals. While wastewater is one possibility, the scientists believe trash receptacles and discarded food are more likely sources.&nbsp;



“I think the big take-home message is the virus is pretty ubiquitous,” said Amanda Goldberg, the study’s first author and former postdoctoral associate in Hoyt’s lab. 



The study focused on Virginia, but many of the species that tested positive are common throughout North America, suggesting they are being exposed in other areas as well. Surveillance across a broader region is urgently needed, Hoyt emphasized.



“The virus is indifferent to whether its host walks on two legs or four. Its primary objective is survival,” said Finkielstein, who is also director of the Virginia Tech Molecular Diagnostics Lab.&nbsp;



She highlighted the importance of sequencing the virus’s genome in these species, a monumental task accomplished by a talented team of molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, and modelers in a state-of-the-art facility. “We understood the critical importance of sequencing the genome of the virus infecting those species,” she said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



The researchers stressed the need for continued surveillance to monitor these mutations. Further research is needed to understand how the virus is transmitted from humans to wildlife, spreads within species, and potentially between species.&nbsp;



“This study highlights the potentially large host range SARS-CoV-2 can have in nature and really how widespread it might be,” Hoyt said. Understanding which wildlife species might play a role in the long-term maintenance of SARS-CoV-2 in humans requires much more work.&nbsp;



“What we’ve already learned is that SARS CoV-2 is not only a human problem, and it takes a multidisciplinary team to address its impact on various species and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healthy-ecosystems-are-needed-to-prevent-future-pandemics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> effectively,” Finkielstein concluded.



The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-49891-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a>.

Celebrations in 2016 signified the midpoint of this ambitious objective, and the participation was heartening, to say the least. 



The #ThumbsUpForTigers campaign saw WWF offices, organizations, celebrities, government officials, individuals, and families uniting on an international scale to honor the grandeur of this regal feline.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-tiger-day">Global Tiger Day</h2>



“Doubling tigers is about tigers, about the whole of nature - and it's also about us," noted Marco Lambertini, Director General WWF.&nbsp;



This statement embodies the interconnectedness of our existence. The survival of tigers isn't just about conserving a species but preserving the intricate balance of nature - and ensuring our survival.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-tiger-day-in-bhutan-and-nepal">Global Tiger Day in Bhutan and Nepal</h2>

Each year, the 29th of July marks a remarkable day...

Have you ever wondered about the small beetles that lurk beneath the surface of Africa's vast savannas? How about their relationship with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elephants-use-specific-names-to-address-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">larger animals</a> like elephants that roam these wide-open lands? 



The unsung heroes in this natural spectacle are the dung beetles, whose sheer number and critical function in the savanna landscape is nothing short of remarkable. 



Dr. Frank Krell, a seasoned research entomologist associated with the <a href="https://www.dmns.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Denver Museum of Nature &amp; Science</a>, has dedicated more than two decades to studying the enigmatic world of dung beetles in East Africa. 



Collaborating with his wife, ecologist Sylvia Krell-Westerwalbesloh, Dr. Krell embarked on a three-year-long project. The research was conducted deep in the heart of East and West African savannas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beetles-and-elephant-dung">Beetles and elephant dung</h2>



The Science of Nature recently published their latest findings, illuminating a fascinating dynamic. Imagine standing in the African grasslands. You might not realize it, but you'd be standing in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dung-beetles-share-their-workload-with-their-mates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dung beetle heaven</a>.



If an unfortunate circumstance forces you to leave behind <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-bugs-bug-humans-more-than-humans-bug-bugs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human</a> waste, it can disappear in less than thirty minutes, thanks to the army of dung beetles. If it’s elephant dung though, things get a bit more complex.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beetle-elephant-relationship">Beetle-elephant relationship</h2>



While studying in Kenya's Laikipia region, the duo noticed that elephant dung attracted a totally different league of dung beetles. And the question was - just how many?



Their investigation had a straightforward approach but needed careful execution. They collected two "boli" or balls of elephant dung, one exposed during the day and the other at night, then took notes.



The results were astounding. They found that while the "day bolus" served meals to just over 3,300 beetles, the sun setting saw an impressive surge in diner numbers - a whopping 13,399 beetles were feasting on the dung pile by the end of the night.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-and-shelter-for-beetles">Food and shelter for beetles</h2>



It's known that two pounds of elephant dung serve about 13,400 beetles with food and shelter. Considering an elephant produces around 320 pounds of dung a day, a single elephant can feed over 2 million dung beetles on any given day.



Extrapolate that to the Laikipia-Samburu ecosystem, home to between 5,000 and 7,500 elephants, and you're looking at a staggering 14 billion dung beetles, spanning over an area of about 21,000 square miles - approximately the combined size of Maryland and New Jersey.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ripple-effect">The ripple effect</h2>



The African savanna elephant is not currently near extinction in East Africa. However, it's classified as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and has vanished from other parts of the continent. What would happen if elephants disappeared from these areas?



While some beetles might find other food sources, the support system for the 14 billion dung beetles would be disrupted.



The extinction of the largest land mammal would undeniably have far-reaching effects, impacting the lives of billions and billions of smaller creatures that so vitally depend on them. This relationship underscores the complex and beautifully orchestrated symphony that is our natural world.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-efforts">Conservation efforts</h2>



The health of the savanna ecosystem is closely tied to its largest inhabitants. Elephants and dung beetles play vital roles. Monitoring their populations is essential. It helps us understand ecological balance.



Researchers are gathering data to improve conservation strategies and advocate for protective policies. By focusing on both species, we contribute to preserving the complex web of life in the African savanna. This effort promotes a healthier planet for future generations.

Elephant dung feeds over 2 million beetles daily

Have you ever wondered about the small beetles that lurk...

Have you ever wondered what the universe looked like after the Big Bang when it was still in its infancy, a mere billion years old? With NASA's new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, we're about to get a glimpse of the cosmic dawn.



This cosmic time machine is set to explore an era known as the cosmic dawn, a significant transition when the universe went from a foggy opacity to the stunning, star-filled expanse we observe today.



Behind this ambitious project is the esteemed astrophysicist Michelle Thaller from NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a> in Greenbelt, Maryland. 



"Something very fundamental about the nature of the universe changed during this time. Thanks to Roman's large, sharp infrared view, we may finally figure out what happened during a critical cosmic turning point," she shares.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-setting-the-stage">Setting the stage</h2>



Imagine the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe as a newborn</a>, a hot sea of particles and radiation. As it expanded and cooled down, protons captured electrons, forming neutral atoms and setting the stage for the stars and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-seen-separating-from-normal-matter-after-galaxy-cluster-collision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a>. 



But there was a catch -- these neutral atoms absorbed light, creating a fog that cloaked the cosmic stage, an epoch now known as the cosmic dark ages.



This intriguing period, lasting from around 380,000 to 200 million years after the big bang, was a time of suspense, like an overture before the main performance, culminating in the cosmic dawn when the fog finally lifted. 



"We're very curious about how the process happened," adds Aaron Yung from the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> in Baltimore.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prime-suspects-reveal-cosmic-dawn">Prime suspects reveal cosmic dawn</h2>



So, what caused the fog to lift? The <a href="https://roman.gsfc.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope</a> aims to unmask the culprits. The likely suspects include early galaxies and their black holes.



How? Early galaxies, characterized by massive stars, could produce energetic light capable of breaking up neutral atoms. Meanwhile, black holes could have generated massive radiation, contributing to the same process.



"Roman will excel at finding the building blocks of cosmic structures," says Takahiro Morishita, an assistant scientist at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caltech</a>/IPAC. 



He explains that Roman's wide, clear views could quickly identify dense regions where the "fog" was being cleared, providing data on early galaxy evolution and the cosmic dawn.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-cosmic-dawn-emerged">How the cosmic dawn emerged</h2>



The earliest stars were no ordinary performers. Their intimidating mass and high-energy radiation lit up the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-novae-star-explosion-may-be-origin-phosphorus-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a>, played a part in forming galaxies, and eventually contributed to the emergence of the cosmic dawn. But their lifetime was a fleeting moment on the cosmic scale.



Science theorizes that these celestial heavyweights quickly collapsed to birth black holes. 



As the universe was still comparatively smaller, these black holes could have easily merged to form even larger ones. These supermassive black holes may have played key roles in clearing the hydrogen fog of the early universe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-symphony-of-telescopes">Symphony of telescopes</h2>



The Roman Space Telescope isn't alone in this journey; it pairs with NASA’s <a href="https://webb.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a>, working as a dynamic duo to illuminate the cosmic dawn. 



While Webb probes the early universe with its deeper view, Roman broadens the perspective, examining how common quasars truly are and collecting a massive amount of data on early galaxies. 



These combined efforts will give us an unprecedented glimpse into the universe’s early life.

As we step back into the throes of the universe's birth with Roman's extensive view, we inch closer to resolving the mystery of cosmic dawn. 



Exploring the contributions of early galaxies and quasars, the Roman Space Telescope could decipher how these cosmic elements carved out bubbles in the primordial fog, paving the way for today's clear and expansive cosmic views.



In this cosmic journey, Roman's observations will contribute significantly to understanding how galaxies and their central supermassive black holes emerged from the primordial gas, influencing star formation, and ultimately, the universe as we know it.



With the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, we embark on an enlightening exploration of how our universe transitioned from being opaque to the brilliant cosmos we perceive today.

During the cosmic dawn of our universe, 'empty' space looked very different

Have you ever wondered how carbon dioxide (CO2) moves through our atmosphere, or how the invisible dance of this particular gas impacts our planet on a global scale? Well, it's about time we pull back the curtain and shed light on this fascinating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-declared-ocean-pollutant-international-court-ruling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phenomenon</a>.



The expert behind the latest captivating observations of our Earth’s atmosphere is climate scientist Lesley Ott from NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a> in Greenbelt, Maryland. The research brings us closer to understanding the complex movements of carbon dioxide.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sources-of-carbon-dioxide-in-the-atmosphere">Sources of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere</h2>



Let's start by understanding the patterns of carbon dioxide movement. If we were to imagine the Earth from afar, between January to March of 2020, the swirling patterns of concentrated carbon dioxide would be noticeable, driven by wind patterns and atmospheric circulation.



China, the United States, and South Asia majorly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-weaker-ocean-will-release-more-carbon-into-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contribute to CO2 emissions</a>. The primary sources of these emissions are power plants, industrial facilities, and automobiles.



Africa and South America's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> are largely due to fires, especially those related to land management, controlled agricultural burns, deforestation, and the burning of oil and coal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-carbon-dioxide-movement-in-atmosphere">Mapping carbon dioxide movement in atmosphere</h2>



The map of carbon dioxide movement was created using a model called GEOS, short for the Goddard Earth Observing System. It's a high-resolution weather model, powered by supercomputers. The resolution of this model is more than 100 times greater than a typical weather model.

Ott and fellow climate scientists were curious about what GEOS would reveal regarding the movement and density of carbon dioxide. 



“We had this opportunity to say: can we tag along and see what really high-resolution CO2 looks like?” Ott said. “We had a feeling we were going to see plume structures and things that we've never been able to see when we do these coarser resolution simulations.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-pulsing-pattern">Why the pulsing pattern?</h2>



You may be wondering about the pulsation seen in the carbon dioxide distribution patterns. The pulsations are due to the day-night cycles of fires flaring up and dying down and the photosynthetic activities of trees and plants.



Furthermore, the atmospheric layer called the planetary boundary layer also contributes to the pulsation due to its rising and falling motion as the Earth’s surface heats and cools.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



Understanding patterns of carbon dioxide movement is vital to tackle climate change. As a heat-trapping greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide is the main contributor to Earth's rising temperatures. An excessive amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes the Earth to warm too quickly.



Human activities have "unequivocally caused warming," according to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This warming leads to extreme weather events and other severe consequences such as intense storms, wildfires, heat waves, and rising sea levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-art-of-visualization">The art of visualization</h2>



The challenge for AJ Christensen, a senior visualization designer at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, was to show the differences in density of this invisible gas. 



“We didn’t want people to get the impression that there was no carbon dioxide in these sparser regions,” said Christensen. “But we also wanted to really highlight the dense regions because that’s the interesting feature of the data. We were trying to show that there’s a lot of density over New York and Beijing.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



These visualizations are important to understand how Earth's systems work and to identify patterns in massive datasets, which can lead scientists closer to deciphering the puzzle of Earth's atmospheric processes. 



“What’s happening is you’re stitching together this very complex array of models to make use of the different satellite data, and that’s helping us fill in this broad puzzle of all the processes that control carbon dioxide,” Ott said. 



“The hope is that if we understand <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-soil-bacteria-contribute-to-atmospheric-co2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gases</a> really well today, we'll be able to build models that better predict them over the next decades or even centuries.”



Remember, understanding our planet starts with paying attention to the smallest details, even the invisible pattern of gases in our atmosphere.

How carbon dioxide travels in the atmosphere

Have you ever wondered how tiny water droplets inside clouds grow large enough to begin their downward journey, manifesting as a refreshing rain shower? This intricate process, influenced by turbulence and fondly called the "rain formation bottleneck," has fascinated scientists globally.



It is of fundamental importance to improving computer model simulations of weather and climate, thus paving the way for enhanced weather forecasts.



In an exciting breakthrough, a research team spearheaded by scientists at the renowned U.S.&nbsp;National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research&nbsp;(<a href="https://ncar.ucar.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF NCAR</a>) made a significant discovery.



Their investigation revealed that the turbulent motions of air within clouds profoundly influence droplet growth and the initiation of rain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turbulence-clouds-and-rain-showers">Turbulence, clouds, and rain showers</h2>



The team employed sophisticated computer modeling for detailed observations of droplets within cumulus&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosols-have-an-underestimated-effect-on-clouds-and-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clouds</a>.



The data used was collected during a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> field operation, providing invaluable insights into the impacts of turbulence on the tiny droplets that eventually coalesce and become raindrops.



“This research shows that turbulent effects on drop coalescence are critical for the evolution of droplet sizes and the initiation of rain,” expressed lead author and an esteemed scientist at NSF NCAR, Kamal Kant Chandrakar. 



“Turbulence in cumulus clouds substantially speeds up rainfall and leads to far greater amounts of rain.”



Through their findings, the team discovered that in computer simulations that included&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-caused-more-severe-turbulence-on-airplanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turbulence</a>, rain formed nearly 20 minutes earlier than in those without turbulence.



Furthermore, the mass of rainwater was more than seven times higher in turbulence-inclusive simulations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-journey-from-tiny-water-droplets-to-rain">Journey from tiny water droplets to rain</h2>



Let's understand &nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smallest-pollution-particles-affect-rainfall-in-the-amazon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rain formation</a>. The process starts with tiny water droplets in clouds condensing around microscopic particles like dust or salt, known as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).&nbsp;



As these millions of droplets meet and mingle, they merge into larger droplets that eventually become weighty enough to descend from the cloud and grace us as rain.



The formation of these raindrops can be influenced by a variety of factors, from the distribution of different droplet sizes to turbulent motions and the properties of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-rain-the-growing-threat-of-airborne-microplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particles in the cloud</a>. 



Ensuring accurate representation of this process in weather and climate system models is crucial for improving their reliability.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-turbulence-on-rain-formation">Impact of turbulence on rain formation</h2>



Chandrakar and his team used detailed observations of drop size distributions taken by research aircraft flying into cumulus congestus clouds during NASA's 2019 field campaign, the Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (<a href="https://espo.nasa.gov/camp2ex/content/CAMP2Ex" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CAMP2Ex</a>). 



They developed high-resolution simulations to recreate the cloud conditions observed during the campaign, exploring how the droplets coalesced under different turbulent flows.



These simulations illuminated the fundamental role of turbulence in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-gets-an-unpredictable-boost-from-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a>&nbsp;timing and extent. Contrary to some rain formation theories, the presence of large CCN could not account for the observed sizes and evolution of droplets.



In simulations with large CCN and minimal turbulence, droplet coalescence was slower, yielding less rain.



“The development of rain is fundamental to clouds, weather, and the entire climate system," Chandrakar astutely summed it up. 



Deepening our understanding of this process could lead to significant improvements in computer models, enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasts and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthcare-satellite-will-reveal-the-climate-effects-of-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>&nbsp;projections, contributing to societal protection.

Now, as Earth's climate continues to warm up, we can expect an increase in both the speed of jet streams and the prevalence of vertical wind shears, heralding a likely rise in turbulence incidents.



A recent study involved the analysis of extensive data sets and comprehensive model simulations. The results of the study suggest that the frequency of clear air turbulence will increase in most jet stream-affected regions, especially North Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East.

Foudad and his team have been leading the research into this phenomenon, including the potential impacts of climate change.



"We now have high confidence that climate change is increasing clear air turbulence in some regions," noted Foudad. Upon reanalyzing atmospheric data from 1980 to 2021, they discovered that moderate-to-severe clear air turbulence swelled by approximately 60 to 155 percent over North Africa, East Asia, the Middle East, the North Atlantic, and the North Pacific.

A new analysis has illuminated why this discrepancy exists.

Consequently, moderate drinkers were compared to a group of "abstainers" and "occasional drinkers" comprising older adults.&nbsp;



Some of these individuals had quit drinking or reduced their alcohol intake due to the onset of various health concerns.



These flawed comparisons have skewed the appearances, making moderate drinkers look ostensibly healthier. However, as the researchers note, appearances can be quite deceiving in this context.

The research team reviewed 107 published studies exploring the relationship between drinking habits and longevity.&nbsp;

The studies differentiated between former drinkers and lifelong abstainers, revealing no connection between moderate alcohol drinking and increased longevity.



It was only the "lower quality" studies that established such a correlation. "If you look at the weakest studies, that’s where you see health benefits," noted the researchers.

The secret of the cicada wing's magical properties lies in its hidden nanoscale features. When magnified 10,000 times, the cicada wing reveals its true complexity.



What appears to be a smooth surface has microscopic structures known as nanopillars. These tiny features contribute to the wing's unique characteristics.



Distributed uniformly across each wing, these nanopillars are the key to the wings' remarkable hydrophobic and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dragonfly-wings-inspire-antibacterial-medical-implants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibacterial properties</a>.&nbsp;



When microbes touch the nanopillars, they suffer physical damage to their outer membranes. This process effectively eliminates the microbes. It showcases the remarkable defensive mechanisms found in cicada wings.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antibacterial-surfaces-inspired-by-cicadas">Antibacterial surfaces inspired by cicadas</h2>



To mimic these natural antibacterial features, Chen used an advanced method known as nanoimprinting lithography. This technique makes it possible to copy the tiny nanopillars from cicada wings onto a type of plastic called polystyrene.



The resulting material is precisely textured with nanopillars, giving it the power to effectively destroy bacteria. This demonstrates the material's potential for innovative applications. It could be used to create self-cleaning and antibacterial surfaces.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-antibacterial-surfaces">Future of antibacterial surfaces</h2>



Chen's work is far from over. In fact, he intends to experiment with other fabrication techniques and observe more dynamic interactions between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a> and replicated surfaces. 



With over 95% of bacteria destroyed within 3 hours by the replicated nanopillars, the future holds promise for the development of durable, antibacterial surfaces inspired by a humble <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-wings-inspire-new-method-to-kill-bacteria-on-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect's wing</a>.



We learn from nature. This is the essence of bioinspired design. It leads us into a new era of scientific discovery and also sparks technological innovation.



With the magic of the cicada as our muse, who knows what we might uncover next?

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes a new map of Mars that is providing insight into the planet’s watery past. The map also reveals where future missions could safely land on Mars.&nbsp;



The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The experts found that the muscle metabolism of cavefish has been genetically reprogrammed over time. As a result, the animals have experienced major changes in their morphology and behavior. Despite these changes, however, the cavefish remain healthy and fit.



The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”
