Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0025326X25009671?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marine Pollution Bulletin</a>.

Fierce winds of change are reshaping the world as we know it, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the rapid ice melt of Greenland. 



A recent, eye-opening study reveals that climate change is accelerating the melting of ice in Greenland at a rate that sends chills down one's spine.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-greenland-ice-melt">Climate change and Greenland ice melt</h2>



The researchers from the <a href="https://web.ub.edu/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Barcelona</a> paint a chilling picture of the extreme melting episodes -- periods of rapid snow and ice melt -- becoming about twice as commonplace during recent summers than in the 1950-1990 era.



But how severe are these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-summer-of-2024-could-make-it-the-hottest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">summertime</a> thaw sessions, exactly? Well, let's take 2012 and 2019 as examples. 



During these peak years of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-transformation-ice-melt-plant-growth-vegetation-cascading-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme melting</a> in Greenland, the equivalent of 244 million and 224 million Olympic-size swimming pools of ice vanished, respectively.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greenland-s-ice-admits-climate-change">Greenland's ice admits climate change</h2>



The study has been a deep dive into the extreme melt episodes in Greenland between 1950 and 2022. Shockingly, meltwater loss figures have averaged around 300 gigatonnes annually -- about 48 million Olympic-size swimming pools a year -- between 1980 and 2010.



Also, almost half of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melting episodes</a> have been extreme in recent decades, especially in the coldest areas in the north and northwest of the island.



To add fuel to the fire or in this case, water to the ocean, the UB researchers remind us that the loss of surface glacial melt is merely the tip of the iceberg. 



Increasing melting reels in the detachment of icebergs directly into the sea and the flow of glaciers into the ocean, thereby upping the ante for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-domino-effect">Domino effect</h2>



Another troubling twist to the tale is the escalating risk of large ice blocks breaking off. As the UB researchers explain, the extent of melting has ascended to higher areas of the ice cap where no ice melt was previously observed. 



The resulting cracks and structural changes in the ice sheet set the stage for more chunks of ice to break off into the ocean.



What’s worse, the team warns us about the grim forecast for the polar regions: a significant upswing in temperatures, which would accelerate the trend shown in this study.



“These atmospheric patterns keep the air over Greenland stagnant during the summer, increase solar radiation and reduce the albedo (sunlight reflectance) of snow and ice, which further accelerates warming and melting", the authors add.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripples-across-the-atlantic">Ripples across the Atlantic</h2>



The melting ice in Greenland due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> has rippling effects across the globe as a predominant accelerator of sea level rise, as well as a perturbator of atmospheric circulation patterns. 



These changes, the researchers note, might tinker with Europe’s climate, potentially impacting socio-economic activities, ecosystems, and potentially exacerbating climate extremes in nearby regions of the North Atlantic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-amplification">Arctic amplification</h2>



A phenomenon known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-amplification-is-destabilizing-the-delicate-balance-of-the-ecosystem/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic amplification</a>, where warming in the Arctic is occurring twice as fast as the global average, stands as both a catalyst and a consequence of the crises unfolding in Greenland.



This rapid warming exacerbates the melting processes, resulting in a feedback loop that intensifies the impacts seen today. 



As the ice melts, it exposes darker surfaces, decreasing the albedo effect and absorbing more heat.



The cycle perpetuates, reshaping the Arctic ecosystem and creating further challenges for the global climate. 



These scientists emphasize the need for detailed climate modeling to understand these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-influences-us-weather-patterns-ai-machine-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accelerating patterns and implications</a> on a finer scale.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



In light of these alarming findings, the international community faces a crucial juncture in addressing the ramifications of Greenland's thaw. 



Efforts must be doubled to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mitigate climate change effects</a> through policy implementation, technological innovation, and global cooperation. 



The study's results call for a reinvigoration of strategies such as carbon sequestration and alternative energy adoption. 



Moreover, fostering resilience in affected communities and engaging in inclusive dialogues are pivotal steps toward constructing pathways for sustainable futures. 



The stakes have never been higher, and the actions taken now will define the contours of the Earth's climate trajectory for generations to come.

Environmentalists and climate scientists have long emphasized the urgency of preserving the Amazon rainforest.



Contributing significantly towards the global climate-control mechanism, the Amazon rainforest is more than a verdant wonder - it is the breathing "lungs" of our planet.



However, a startling revelation about the world's largest tropical rainforest has raised new concerns.



Almost 40% of the Amazon - the areas most crucial to mitigating climate change - remain unprotected. These regions are not shielded as Indigenous sanctuaries or nature reserves, according to a new report.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-s-unprotected-regions">Amazon's unprotected regions</h2>



These unprotected territories are primarily situated in the extreme southwest of the Amazon in Peru, and the far northeast in Brazil, French Guiana, and Suriname.



What makes these parts exceptionally significant in the climate change combat "Those parts of the Amazon have the biggest, densest trees and the most continuous canopy cover," noted Matt Finer, who leads the Amazon Conservation's <a href="https://www.maaproject.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Project</a> (MAAP).



These regions store large amounts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-release-carbon-faster-than-we-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a>, potentially turning into climate-warming greenhouse gases if jeopardized by fire or logging.



Combining the powers of satellite imaging and machine-learning models, the Amazon Conservation team produced a 3D image of the forest, focusing solely on aboveground vegetation.



The analysis has been instrumental in mapping the most pristine parts of the Amazon that still exist. "It really just gives this overall roadmap in terms of some of the highest carbon areas that are important to protect," said Finer.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diminishing-levels-of-protection">Diminishing levels of protection </h2>



According to the MAAP analysis, 61% of the peak carbon areas in the Amazon are guarded as indigenous reserves or other protected lands. However, the remaining areas lack any formal designation.



Countries like Brazil, Suriname, and French Guiana show a diminished level of protection with only 51% of high carbon areas labeled for preservation. Peru, on the other hand, protects a higher ratio of its critical areas. 



However, certain unprotected regions have been marked for logging, causing concern among environmentalists.



With an earlier analysis indicating that the Amazon held a staggering 71.5 billion tons of carbon, approximately double the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global carbon dioxide emissions</a> anticipated for 2022, the need to protect these regions becomes more crucial than ever.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-the-unprotected-amazon">Protecting the unprotected Amazon</h2>



The study also revealed that the Amazon absorbed more carbon than it released in the decade leading up to 2022, offering a glimmer of hope for the global climate scenario. 



Yet, this is still a hot topic of debate. Some research suggests that the Amazon has now become a source of emissions, instead of a carbon sink.



Without a doubt, safeguarding our environment is not just an option, it's our duty. Recognizing the urgency to protect these remaining pristine parts of the Amazon, therefore, is vital for the long-term health of our planet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-impact-of-the-amazon">Global impact of the Amazon</h2>



The Amazon rainforest plays a pivotal role in maintaining global climate stability. Often referred to as the "lungs of the Earth," the forest absorbs vast amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate the effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-takes-a-major-toll-on-childrens-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>.



Its complex ecosystems also serve as critical habitats for millions of species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. 



Beyond its ecological significance, the Amazon influences weather patterns across the planet, contributing to rainfall in regions far beyond South America.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-threat-of-deforestation">The threat of deforestation</h2>



Despite its importance, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brazilian-amazon-crisis-deforestation-is-escalating-in-indigenous-territories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deforestation</a> and degradation continue to threaten the Amazon. Logging, mining, and agricultural expansion have left significant portions of the forest vulnerable.



The destruction of these areas not only accelerates biodiversity loss but also disrupts the Amazon's ability to act as a carbon sink. 



If deforestation trends continue, scientists warn that the Amazon could reach a tipping point where it would shift from being a vital carbon store to a carbon emitter, exacerbating the global climate crisis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-the-amazon">The future of the Amazon</h2>



Protecting the Amazon is not just a regional issue but a global responsibility. Efforts to create more protected areas, enforce conservation laws, and involve indigenous communities in land stewardship are crucial for safeguarding the rainforest’s future.

Envision some of the famous seafood dishes, like a beautifully cooked large yellow croaker. Now consider a critical yet unseen component of that seafood's journey to our plate - the cold chain. 



This chain plays an underestimated role in delivering fresh, high-quality seafood. At the same time, it is also a primary cause behind the spoilage of seafood, presenting unique challenges that researchers are eager to resolve.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-chain-dilemma">Cold chain dilemma</h2>



Cold chain logistics, an often unmentioned player in the food industry, holds the key to the freshness of our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-america-achieve-seafood-self-sufficiency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seafood</a>.&nbsp;



However, inconsistencies in temperature control during transit and handling can promote conditions ideal for microbial growth, enzymatic activity, and chemical reactions, which may reduce fish quality. This is where our story gets interesting.



New research from <a href="http://www.zjgsu.edu.cn/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zhejiang Gongshang University</a> is shedding light on this critical issue, taking us a step closer to mitigating quality loss during transit and offering valuable insights into improving the management of the seafood cold chain.



Led by Dr. Yanbo Wang, an ambitious team of researchers embarked on a study to examine the effects of temperature fluctuations on the large yellow croaker, a mariculture species noted for its economic value and perishable nature.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-combating-supply-complications">Combating supply complications</h2>



The team simulated actual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seafood-is-underestimated-source-of-pfas-exposure-in-humans/">cold chain conditions</a> to gauge how temperature fluctuations from 4°C (39°F) to 16°C (61°F) affect the integrity of large yellow croaker.



Their findings? A distinct correlation between inconsistency in temperatures and compromised fish quality.



By carefully tracking changes in total viable counts (TVC), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content, K values, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values - key spoilage indicators - the team uncovered that higher temperature variations led to significant increases in all these spoilage markers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quality-deterioration-markers">Quality deterioration markers</h2>



Perhaps one of the most fascinating results of the study was the identification of 81 volatile compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, and nitrogenous compounds.&nbsp;



The presence and concentration of these compounds swing wildly with temperature changes. Notably, 2-pentanone and ethyl acetate stood out as possible signs of quality degradation, offering new means to monitor seafood freshness.



“Our study clearly demonstrates how temperature fluctuations can dramatically affect seafood quality, reinforcing the need for stringent cold chain management. Identifying specific volatile compounds as markers of spoilage provides a new tool for monitoring seafood freshness throughout the supply chain," noted Dr. Yanbo Wang, the study's lead author. 



"These insights are critical for producers and distributors to minimize quality loss during transport and ensure food safety. By advancing our understanding of temperature effects on seafood, we can drive improvements across the entire cold chain logistics system.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transforming-the-seafood-supply-chain">Transforming the seafood supply chain</h2>



By solving the cold chain riddle, the study's influence transcends the realm of quality control. It opens doors to developing enhanced monitoring systems for early detection of quality degradation - a game-changer for the seafood supply chain. 



By identifying stalwart spoilage indicators such as TVC and volatile compounds like 2-pentanone and ethyl acetate, the research paves the way for new packaging and transport technologies that maintain stable temperatures. 



Ultimately, the insights from the study could help reduce food waste and improve consumer safety.



Furthermore, the research highlights the pressing need for updated regulatory standards to ensure better temperature management in cold chain logistics. This holds profound implications for a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dietary-shift-to-forage-fish-could-prevent-millions-of-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">safer and higher-quality journey</a> from ocean to table.

Pathogens traveling on the wind may be more common than we realize.&nbsp;A recent study has revealed a surprising discovery - potentially harmful microbes, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria, travel vast intercontinental distances on high-level winds.



The study, which is the first of its kind, focused on data from tropospheric aircraft surveys. 



Scientists led by Professor Xavier Rodó at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.isglobal.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Barcelona Institute for Global Health</a>&nbsp;uncovered an unexpected diversity of bacteria and fungi, some of which are pathogenic to humans.&nbsp;



"Around 30-40% of the microbes were potentially pathogenic species, either well-recognized human pathogens or opportunistic pathogens," noted Professor Rodó. This can affect people with weakened immune systems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-flying-pathogens">High-flying pathogens</h2>



While concentrations of microbes in the air are too low to cause immediate illness, Professor Rodó warned that the real concern lies in the potential for these airborne microbes to introduce&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-have-been-found-in-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotic-resistant</a>&nbsp;genes into new environments.



"The genes are transported in living organisms, so they have a greater likelihood of passing once the aerosol settles," added Dr. Allen Haddrell of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, who was not involved in the study.



The resilient&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-deadly-microbes-travel-around-the-world-so-quickly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes</a>&nbsp;were found covering distances up to 1,200 miles, attached to dust particles in a study conducted over Japan.&nbsp;



These dust particles, originating from farm fields in northeastern China, transported more than 300 species of bacteria and 260 types of fungi across the skies.&nbsp;Similar wind patterns likely carry microbes across other regions of the globe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pathogens-and-winds-of-resistance">Pathogens and winds of resistance</h2>



The sheer number of microbial species surprised the researchers, as their initial goal was simply to analyze the chemistry of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-salt-lake-drying-up-causing-major-dust-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dust</a>&nbsp;particles.&nbsp;



"This is a word of caution that we should be changing our view of the air," said Professor Rodó. He pointed out that these microbes endured extreme environmental conditions, protected by the dust particles they traveled with.



Some of the species identified include well-known&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-vegetables-often-harbor-human-pathogens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human pathogens</a>&nbsp;such as E. coli, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Clostridium difficile.&nbsp;



Protected from ultraviolet light and dehydration, these pathogens remained viable and capable of replicating after long journeys.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pathogens-in-the-wind-samples">Pathogens in the wind samples</h2>



Dust samples were collected at altitudes between 0.6 and 1.9 miles above Japan, beyond the planetary boundary layer (PBL). At these altitudes, winds travel faster and farther due to reduced friction with the ground.&nbsp;



Chemical analysis confirmed the dust’s long-range origin, containing rare elements such as zirconium and hafnium, which were traced to agricultural regions in China.



"The chances of getting an infectious dose (via high-level winds) must be considerably less than when encountering an infected person on an airplane," noted Professor Chris Thomas from the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a>.



However, Professor Thomas noted that the dust and chemicals accompanying the microbes may pose a greater health risk as air pollution.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-this-mean-for-humans">What does this mean for humans?</h2>



Though the immediate risk of infection from these high-altitude travelers is low, the presence of antibiotic-resistant microbes raises concerns about global health.&nbsp;



Professor Rodó emphasized that the findings reveal an underappreciated dimension of antibiotic resistance. The experts concluded that the troposphere could act as a reservoir and long-distance transporter of various microbial species, including harmful ones.



This highlights the potential for airborne pathogens to contribute to antibiotic resistance, posing significant public health concerns that require further investigation. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing strategies to combat the spread of resistant bacteria.

The research opens up new questions about the spread of antibiotic resistance via wind-borne pathogens and dust particles.



Dr. Haddrell warned that this is going to be a problem over the long term as more resistant&nbsp;strains of bacteria&nbsp;may find new environments in which to thrive.



The study also raises broader concerns about air pollution, with dust and chemicals contributing to airborne health risks.



While the airborne pathogens may not pose an immediate threat to most people, their ability to survive long-distance travel and carry antibiotic-resistant genes should prompt further investigation.&nbsp;



The study adds yet another layer of complexity to our global ecosystem, highlighting the need for ongoing research into the invisible travelers riding the wind.

Pathogens ride high-altitude winds over vast distances

A recent study of 10,000 nine to 11 year olds has found that each additional day of exposure to wildfire smoke and other types of extreme forms of air pollution raises the risk of mental health issues in children.



“We found that a greater number of days with fine particulate air pollution levels above EPA standards was associated with increased symptoms of mental illness, both during the year of exposure and up to one year later,” said lead author Harry Smolker, a research associate at <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/">CU Boulder</a> Institute of Cognitive Science.



This study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1289/EHP13427">Environmental Health Perspectives</a>, was published at the same time as smoke from Southern California wildfires covers much of the Western U.S., extending as far away as Las Vegas and some parts of Colorado.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-severe-levels-of-particulate-matter">Severe levels of particulate matter</h2>



Although annual average air quality has improved in recent decades due to limits on greenhouse emissions from combustion engines, more frequent wildfires have led to a new critical problem: a larger number of days with severe levels of particulate matter in the air.



“We are entering a new age in which we are experiencing unprecedented levels of exposure to particulates multiple times a year,” Smolker said. “We need to understand what these extreme events are doing to young people, their brains and their behavior.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-smoke-and-mental-health">Wildfire smoke and mental health</h2>



Although scientists have already known that air pollution can harm the lungs and the heart, they have only recently started to explore its impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-mental-health-children/">mental health</a>.



Studies have shown that PM 2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers), is small enough to cross the blood-brain barrier, leading to inflamed tissue, damaged cells, and immune responses which can trigger both acute and long-term brain changes.



Experts have previously found that hospital admissions for depression, psychosis, and suicide attempts increase in adults on days with a high level of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-linked-to-increased-risk-of-dementia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a>.



When pregnant women are exposed to high levels of particulate matter, their children are at a higher risk of developing motor deficits and cognitive impairments later in life.&nbsp;



However, this new study is among the first to examine potential impacts on young people, whose brains are in a process of continuous development.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-smoke-exposure">Wildfire smoke exposure</h2>



The scientists analyzed data from 10,000 pre-teens participating in the <a href="https://abcdstudy.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study</a> - the largest longitudinal study of brain development and children’s health conducted in the U.S.&nbsp;



To determine how many days in 2016 children were exposed to PM2.5 levels exceeding the level the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Protection Agency</a> (EPA) considers safe (35 micrograms per cubic meter), the researchers examined participant addresses and historical air quality data.



The investigation revealed that approximately one-third were exposed to at least one day above the EPA standard, with one participant exposed to unsafe levels for 173 days. The highest level of exposure was 199 micrograms per cubic meter, which is over five times the level deemed safe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-impacts-of-wildfires">Mental health impacts of wildfires</h2>



The experts looked at parent questionnaires at four time points during three years. They discovered that, across both genders, each additional day of exposure to unsafe levels of PM2.5 increased the probability of an adolescent developing symptoms of depression, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fear-and-anxiety-the-mental-health-impacts-of-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anxiety</a> and other mental health issues up to one year later.



These findings came after taking into account a wide variety of possibly confounding factors, such as race, socioeconomic status and, most importantly, parental mental health. Even when parents did not report any symptoms of mental illness, their children frequently did.



“This suggests that PM2.5 exposure may have specific impacts on youth distinct from impacts on their parents,” Smolker said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-repeated-exposure-is-most-damaging-nbsp">Repeated exposure is most damaging&nbsp;</h2>



Repeated high levels of PM2.5 exposure had a larger influence on risk than annual averages or maximum levels did, an alarming finding suggesting that each additional day of exposure counts.



For each day of unsafe exposure, risk increased up 0.1 points on average on a scale from 1 to 50.



“This is relatively small, but not trivial,” Smolker said, emphasizing that PM2.5 is only one of the large variety of pollutants in the “exposome,” the collection of environmental exposures which shape children’s development. “Collectively they can add up.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-impacts-of-air-pollution">Cognitive impacts of air pollution </h2>



Some children may be genetically predisposed to be even more vulnerable to the cognitive impact of air pollution



Although PM2.5 can arise from many sources, including traffic and industry, the experts suspect that most of the exposures in the study were due to wildfire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-creates-conditions-that-favor-more-fires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smoke</a>.



“Wildfire smoke events are becoming more and more common, and this study adds to a growing body of evidence that they can impact our health,” said co-author Colleen Reid, a geographer at CU Boulder.



“The current study concluded that the number of days of PM2.5 exposure above US EPA standards during late childhood was associated with higher concurrent levels of internalizing symptoms across females and males, even after considering effects of other temporal patterns of exposure,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;



“Notably, this association remained when accounting for parental psychopathology, suggesting PM2.5 exposure may have specific impacts on youth distinct from impacts on their parents.”

Wildfire smoke exposure linked to mental health issues

Antarctica’s rapidly shrinking sea ice could have a significant impact on the food supply of seabirds that breed far from the continent, according to new research. 



Most of the world’s albatrosses and their relatives, the petrels, breed on islands in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. These seabirds rely on the nutrient-rich waters affected by the seasonal sea ice for feeding.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-the-movement-of-seabirds">Monitoring the movement of seabirds</h2>



A study led by <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Durham University</a> in collaboration with the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Antarctic Survey</a> (BAS) used satellite tracking technology to monitor the movements of these birds. 



The researchers discovered that albatrosses and petrels travel vast distances to reach areas affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-low-antarctic-sea-ice-and-rapid-melting-pace-stuns-climate-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea ice</a>, known as the Antarctic seasonal sea ice zone. 



This is where they either feed in the nutrient-dense waters left behind after the ice melts each summer or, in the case of southern giant petrels, scavenge for seals found on the ice itself.



Historically, Antarctica had not experienced the dramatic loss of sea ice seen in the Arctic. However, in the past five years, Antarctic sea ice has begun to retreat more rapidly.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seabirds-may-struggle-to-find-food">Seabirds may struggle to find food</h2>



The study suggests that as sea ice continues to decline, seabirds may be forced to fly further from their breeding grounds in search of food, or they may encounter shifts in where their food sources are located. This, in turn, could disrupt the ecosystems to which these seabirds belong.



Published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.pocean.2024.10333" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Progress in Oceanography</a>, the study provides new insight into how these changes in sea ice could affect bird populations that breed far from the continent. 



Study lead author Ewan Wakefield is a scientist from Durham University’s Department of Geography.



“Every winter, the sea freezes around Antarctica, with sea ice covering tens of millions of square miles. We found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-uncovers-4000-years-of-foraging-behavior-among-albatrosses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">albatrosses</a> and large petrels travel hundreds of miles, some far into the area covered by this sea ice, and we think that they do this to feed,” said Wakefield. 



“In that case, Antarctica’s receding sea ice, driven by climate change, could affect not just the penguins, familiar to many people, that breed on the continent, but also huge numbers of seabirds breeding hundreds or thousands of miles away.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-species-rely-on-sea-ice">Many species rely on sea ice</h2>



The experts analyzed the movements of seven species of albatross and large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-snowstorms-impact-breeding-success-of-petrels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">petrel</a>, including northern and southern giant petrels, white-chinned petrels, and several species of albatross. 



Using satellite data collected between 1992 and 2023, the researchers tracked 2,497 foraging trips by 1,289 seabirds from South Georgia, a sub-Antarctic island about 1,000 miles from Antarctica. The research revealed that all seven species used sea ice-affected waters, though in different ways.&nbsp;



For example, albatrosses largely avoided ice-covered areas, likely because of the difficulty in flying or landing on the ice. Instead, they fed in regions where the ice had melted and released concentrated nutrients.&nbsp;



Southern giant petrels, on the other hand, ventured hundreds of miles into the pack ice during spring, likely scavenging for seals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shrinking-sea-ice-levels">Shrinking sea ice levels</h2>



The researchers also observed a seasonal pattern, with birds moving north and south in sync with plankton blooms in the oceans - a phenomenon known as green wave surfing.



During the period when the satellite data was recorded, Antarctic sea ice was relatively stable. However, recent summers have seen earlier retreats and record-low levels of seasonal sea ice.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-escalating-impacts-on-seabirds-nbsp">Escalating impacts on seabirds&nbsp;</h2>



According to Richard Phillips, co-author and leader of the Higher Predators and Conservation Group at BAS, these declines in sea ice, exacerbated by climate change, could worsen the already unsustainable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-all-seabirds-have-ingested-microplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human impacts</a> on seabird populations.



While the study sheds light on how seabirds interact with sea ice-affected habitats, researchers acknowledge some limitations. They do not yet know exactly what the birds are eating in these areas, which future tracking and dietary studies aim to reveal.&nbsp;



Additionally, the resolution of the tracking data wasn’t fine enough to show exactly how birds interact with sea ice on a small scale. Finally, the study didn’t cover the entire breeding period for several species, so it remains unclear how they might use these habitats during other times of the year.



Despite these limitations, the study underscores the importance of understanding how Antarctic sea ice dynamics influence not only the continent’s wildlife but also the seabirds that breed far away in the Southern Ocean.

Shrinking sea ice makes it harder for seabirds to find food

In an astounding revelation, scientists have shed new light on the contributing factors behind Amazon rainforest carbon emissions. 



Using high-resolution aerial scans and cutting-edge computational modeling, the researchers have identified wildfires, storms, and selective logging as the dominant culprits.



These disturbances, once thought to have a lesser impact, surprisingly outweigh traditional clear-cutting practices in terms of Amazon carbon loss.



This new understanding challenges long-held assumptions and highlights the urgent need to address multiple drivers of degradation to protect the Amazon’s crucial role in regulating Earth's climate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-the-drivers-of-amazon-carbon-loss">Unveiling the drivers of Amazon carbon loss</h2>



Instead of relying on conventional methods, the researchers used drones equipped with state-of-the-art light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors.



These sophisticated devices allowed the experts to accurately map and measure tree biomass and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/circular-economy-needed-to-reduce-americas-carbon-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon emissions</a> across vast stretches of Brazilian forests.



"Here, we estimate changes of forest aboveground carbon (AGC) stocks attributed to both human-induced degradation and natural disturbances, and the postdisturbance regrowth over an area of active land use change in the southern Brazilian Amazon," noted the researchers.



With the backing of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the scientists uncovered alarming findings. Of the estimated 90.5 million tons of carbon lost annually, a staggering 60 million tons were attributed to forest degradation caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-in-old-growth-amazon-forests-increased-by-152-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a>, storms, and selective logging.



In contrast, only about 24 million tons could be traced back to clear-cutting, challenging the traditional view of deforestation as the primary driver of carbon loss in the Amazon.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dynamics-in-forests">Carbon dynamics in forests </h2>



Study co-author K.C. Cushman is an environmental scientist and expert in data analytics at the <a href="https://www.ornl.gov/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwxY-3BhAuEiwAu7Y6sz_5c-_3HT-Qu7Wo4kTAuc8pjs6xQqv5i_IiLOxqGcEn-S4Su1nfFRoCAa8QAvD_BwE">Oak Ridge National Laboratory</a>.



"It's important to calibrate models to local conditions to achieve the best estimates," noted Cushman. "Tree shape varies a lot from one setting to another even if it's the same species."



The research highlights the urgency of addressing these newly uncovered triggers for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-rainforest-is-approaching-widespread-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainforest</a> carbon emissions.



Cushman and his team are now applying similar cutting-edge methodologies to study carbon dynamics in forests across the U.S. Southeast and also in tropical regions, further broadening the understanding of global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-explores-forest-degradation-in-the-atlantic-rainforest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest degradation</a>.



While clear-cutting was once considered the primary villain behind carbon emissions in rainforests, the new findings shift the focus to other key contributors.



Coordinated action is urgently needed to safeguard the planet's rainforests, which play an essential role in stabilizing Earth's climate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-carbon-loss-and-global-warming">Amazon carbon loss and global warming</h2>



The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” due to its vast capacity to absorb and store carbon dioxide, acting as a critical buffer against climate change.

Efforts must move beyond simply preventing clear-cutting and should address forest degradation caused by smaller-scale but equally destructive activities. 



Integrating advanced technologies like LiDAR into conservation strategies will be vital in monitoring and managing forest health. 



Local communities, governments, and international organizations must collaborate to enforce stricter logging regulations, prevent wildfires, and restore degraded areas to safeguard the Amazon’s ecological and carbon-regulating functions.

However, when ozone managed to take residence at the ground level, it ceased to be a silent guardian; it became a dangerous threat to both the environment and public health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-ground-level-ozone">Impacts of ground-level ozone </h2>



Ground-level ozone is a harmful combination of pollutants emitted from human activities such as industrial processes, vehicle emissions, and deforestation. 



Under the unforgiving glare of sunlight, ozone pollution is causing considerable disturbance to our ecosystems.



Not only does it pose serious health risks to humans, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, but it also interferes with plants' ability to absorb carbon dioxide, undermining their role in mitigating climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ozone-and-stunted-forest-growth">Ozone and stunted forest growth</h2>



New research published in the journal Nature Geoscience paints an alarming picture of the growing threat posed by ground-level <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-pollution-may-endanger-millions-by-2050/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ozone pollution</a>. It is significantly stunting the annual growth of tropical forests, with an average reduction of 5.1% in new growth.



The situation is even more severe in Asia, where certain regions are experiencing a dramatic 10.9% decline in new forest growth, highlighting the unequal impact of ozone pollution across the globe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reduction-in-forest-carbon-storage">Reduction in forest carbon storage </h2>



According to Dr. Alexander Cheesman from <a href="https://www.jcu.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Cook University</a> and the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>, tropical forests play a crucial role in offsetting carbon dioxide emissions. "Our study shows that air pollution can jeopardize this critical ecosystem service."



The study estimates that ozone pollution has prevented the capture of a staggering 290 million tons of carbon annually since 2000.



This significant loss of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> sequestration capacity underscores the detrimental effect ozone pollution is having on tropical forests, which are critical for absorbing excess atmospheric carbon and mitigating the impacts of climate change.



"The resulting cumulative loss equates to a 17% reduction in carbon removal by tropical forests so far this century," said Dr. Cheesman.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ozone-pollution-and-forest-restoration-efforts">Ozone pollution and forest restoration efforts</h2>



Urbanization, industrialization, and increased burning of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels-kills-5-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuels</a> have escalated emissions of "precursor" molecules, such as nitrogen oxides, that lead to ozone formation. 



"Ozone concentrations across the tropics are projected to rise further due to increased precursor emissions and altered atmospheric chemistry in a warming world," said Dr. Flossie Brown, co-lead author of the study.



These rising ozone levels pose a significant threat to current and future forest restoration efforts, particularly in areas critical to mitigating climate change. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-air-quality">Improving air quality</h2>



"We found that areas of current and future forest restoration are disproportionately affected by this elevated ozone. It is clear that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-and-bushes-near-highways-improve-air-quality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air quality</a> will continue to play an important but often overlooked part in the way forests absorb and store carbon," said Dr. Brown. 



Improving air quality is vital for enabling forests to effectively absorb and store carbon, noted study co-author Professor Stephen Sitch.



"Embracing a future with greater environmental protection would lead to reduced ground-level ozone, improved air quality, and the additional benefit of enhanced carbon uptake in tropical forests," said Professor Stitch.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dual-nature-of-ozone">The dual nature of ozone</h2>



Ozone exists in two forms: one as a protective shield in the stratosphere and the other as a harmful pollutant at ground level. 



While stratospheric ozone is essential for blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation, ground-level ozone (also known as tropospheric ozone) forms when pollutants from vehicles, industrial activities, and fires react with sunlight.



This ground-level ozone acts as a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas</a>, trapping heat and contributing to climate change.



Ozone pollution is not only a threat to tropical forests but also to a wide range of ecosystems. In addition to stunting forest growth, ozone can damage crops, reduce agricultural productivity, and affect water quality by altering plant and soil interactions.



The broader ecological consequences of ozone pollution are becoming clearer, signaling an urgent need for stricter air quality regulations and the reduction of emissions that lead to its formation.

Have you ever paused to consider the hidden world of insect communication? For over 30 years, a scientist named Rex Cocroft has dedicated his career to understanding this fascinating arena. 



With a background in music and biology, Cocroft's work has been recognized across the globe, earning him a feature in a BBC documentary series and even inspiring fellow researchers to name a new species of treehoppers, Cladonota rex, in his honor.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-treehoppers-communicate-using-vibrations">Treehoppers communicate using vibrations</h2>



Treehoppers are tiny insects that inhabit every continent except Antarctica. These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-boost-plant-evolution-in-surprising-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">small creatures</a> have advanced communication systems that are as intriguing as they are mysterious. 



The insects communicate by sending vibrations through a plant’s leaves and stem, almost like a silent symphony that humans cannot detect.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sending-messages-through-vibrations">Sending messages through vibrations</h2>



"Treehoppers have vibration sensors that detect when their legs move up and down, and they are extremely sensitive to that kind of motion," explained Cocroft, who is a biologist at the <a href="https://missouri.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Missouri</a>.



These vibrations work much like our sense of sound, allowing treehoppers to convey messages and signals. But remember, what we perceive as silence, is a robust conversation for treehoppers.



Cocroft uses unique sensors that function like guitar amplifiers. "Piezoelectric materials produce an electrical current when under mechanical stress," he noted. 



So, by using a piezo disk, the vibrations become an electrical signal that can be amplified, allowing him to tune into the chat between the bugs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-treehoppers-diverse-way-of-communicating">Treehoppers' diverse way of communicating</h2>



Treehoppers <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-have-complex-biochemical-communication-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communicate</a> by vibrating different parts of their bodies, which transmits vibrations via their legs to the plant stem. 



Interestingly, these creatures can also mimic cicadas by creating a clicking sound, and some can even create song-like sounds that vary in pitch, tone, and volume.



"Treehoppers typically have several different types of signals in their repertoire, and they are good at distinguishing between those and responding appropriately," explained Cocroft. It might not be what we usually associate with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/beneficial-insects-are-severely-impacted-by-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insect</a> sounds, but the mechanics of producing and transmitting these sounds are unique.



"With more than 3,000 species of treehoppers worldwide, every species has different songs, so you don’t know what you’re going to hear until you begin to listen," said Cocroft.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-musician-turned-biologist">Musician turned biologist</h2>



Having been drawn to the piano during his high school days, Cocroft initially pursued a degree in music in college. 



But the call of biology, a childhood passion, was too strong for him to ignore. After a stint as a research assistant at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Cocroft's interest in animal communication took flight, a journey that led him to the fascinating world of treehoppers. 



"Communication is such a key part of the behavior of any animal,” said Cocroft, who embodies a unique blend of passion, curiosity, and dedication.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-communication-for-survival">Communication for survival</h2>



One might wonder, what evolutionary advantage does such complex communication provide to treehoppers? These small insects are not just engaging in idle chatter; their communication is essential for survival and reproduction. 



Through vibrational signals, treehoppers can relay alarms about potential predators, coordinate collective movements, and even engage in mating duets, where males and females signal back and forth to evaluate compatibility. 



Such intricate layers of communication have likely evolved to ensure that treehoppers can efficiently interact with their environment and make adaptive decisions critical for their biodiversity. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrets-of-insect-communication">Secrets of insect communication</h2>



Reflecting on decades of research, Cocroft is optimistic about the future of studying insect communication. 



With advancing technology, researchers are poised to uncover even more secrets about how treehoppers and other insects communicate. 



Innovations in sensor technology and computational analysis promise to deepen the understanding of vibrational ecology and its implications across <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-day-using-technology-to-protect-our-natural-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a>. 



Cocroft envisions a future where these insights could impact agriculture, conservation, and even robotics, by emulating the efficient communication systems found in nature. 



"We are just scratching the surface of what these tiny creatures can teach us about communication and adaptation."

Treehoppers secretly communicate by making plants vibrate

Global methane emissions have continued to rise at an alarming rate despite international efforts to curb them.&nbsp;



More than 150 countries have pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30% by the end of this decade, yet new research reveals that in the past five years, methane emissions have surged faster than ever before.



In a perspective article published on September 10 in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ad6463" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Research Letters</a>, alongside data in Earth System Science Data, researchers warned that the current trend “cannot continue if we are to maintain a habitable climate.”&nbsp;



Both papers were part of the <a href="https://www.globalcarbonproject.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Carbon Project</a>, led by <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a> scientist Rob Jackson, which tracks global greenhouse gas emissions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-trajectory-of-rising-methane-rates-nbsp">Extreme trajectory of rising methane rates&nbsp;</h2>



The data reveals that atmospheric methane levels are now more than 2.6 times higher than pre-industrial levels, marking the highest concentration in at least 800,000 years.&nbsp;



Methane <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/methane-emissions-are-greatly-underestimated-by-the-epa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emission rates</a> are currently rising along the most extreme trajectory predicted by climate scientists. This trend could lead to global warming of more than 3 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century.&nbsp;



“Right now, the goals of the Global Methane Pledge seem as distant as a desert oasis,” said Jackson, who is the Michelle and Kevin Douglas Provostial Professor at Stanford's Doerr School of Sustainability. “We all hope they aren’t a mirage.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spike-in-methane-emission-rates">Spike in methane emission rates</h2>



Methane, though short-lived compared to carbon dioxide, is a potent greenhouse gas. During its first 20 years in the atmosphere, methane traps heat nearly 90 times more effectively than carbon dioxide, making it a critical target in efforts to limit global warming.&nbsp;



However, despite increased attention on methane reduction, total emissions have surged by 61 million tons - or about 20% - over the past two decades.&nbsp;



This spike has been primarily driven by increases in coal mining, oil and gas production, livestock farming, and decomposing organic waste in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/landfills-emit-exorbitant-amount-methane-into-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">landfills</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regional-disparities-in-methane-emissions-nbsp">Regional disparities in methane emissions&nbsp;</h2>



Marielle Saunois of <a href="https://www.universite-paris-saclay.fr/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Université Paris-Saclay</a>, lead author of the Earth System Science Data paper, emphasized the regional disparities in methane emissions.



“Only the European Union and possibly Australia appear to have decreased methane emissions from human activities over the past two decades. The largest regional increases have come from China and southeast Asia.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-from-human-activities-nbsp">Methane from human activities&nbsp;</h2>



In 2020, the most recent year for complete data, around 400 million tons - or 65% - of global methane emissions were linked to human activities.&nbsp;



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agriculture-higher-methane-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Agriculture</a> and waste management together contributed two-thirds of these emissions, while the fossil fuel industry was responsible for the remainder. The researchers found that methane emissions from human sources have continued to rise through at least 2023.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reduced-emissions-of-nitrogen-oxides">Reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides</h2>



A particularly sharp increase in atmospheric methane was recorded in 2020, with 42 million tons added - double the average annual increase during the 2010s and more than six times the increase seen during the early 2000s.&nbsp;



Pandemic lockdowns in 2020 temporarily reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), pollutants that typically degrade methane in the atmosphere. This reduction in NOx emissions contributed to the methane buildup.&nbsp;



“We’re still trying to understand the full effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-lockdowns-had-unexpected-impacts-on-wildlife-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID lockdowns</a> on the global methane budget,” Jackson explained. “COVID changed nearly everything - from fossil fuel use to emissions of other gasses that alter the lifetime of methane in the atmosphere.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-influence-of-humans-on-methane-rates">Growing influence of humans on methane rates</h2>



In their most recent assessment, Global Carbon Project scientists revised how they classify methane sources.&nbsp;



Previously, all methane from wetlands, lakes, and rivers was considered natural. However, the latest methane budget accounts for the growing influence of human activities on these emissions.&nbsp;



For example, human-made reservoirs contribute an estimated 30 million tons of methane annually, as submerged organic material decays and releases the gas.&nbsp;



“Emissions from reservoirs behind dams are as much a direct human source as methane emissions from a cow or an oil and gas field,” noted Jackson.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threat-to-global-climate-goals-nbsp">Threat to global climate goals&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers estimate that about one-third of methane emissions from wetlands and freshwater sources in recent years have been influenced by human factors, such as agricultural runoff, wastewater, land use changes, and rising temperatures.



The continued rise in methane emissions poses a significant threat to global climate goals. As extreme weather events and heat waves become more frequent, the consequences of this trend are becoming increasingly clear.&nbsp;



“The world has reached the threshold of 1.5C increases in global average surface temperature, and is only beginning to experience the full consequences,” noted the study authors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-action-is-needed">Urgent action is needed </h2>



Addressing this challenge will require global efforts to reduce methane emissions at their source. This includes implementing measures such as leak detection in the fossil fuel industry, improved waste management, and changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-detect-methane-emission-from-cow-burps/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">livestock</a> farming practices.&nbsp;



Without urgent and concerted action, methane emissions will continue to drive global temperatures beyond critical thresholds, threatening the planet's habitability.

Rising methane emissions threaten Earth's habitability

Global methane emissions have continued to rise at an alarming...

Warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico can power massive hurricanes. However, the level of destructiveness of such hurricanes does not depend only on the climate, but also on the people and properties that are in harm's way.&nbsp;



For instance, in various coastal cities, fast population growth has left an increasing number of people inhabiting areas at high risk of flooding.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-socially-vulnerable-communities-nbsp">Socially vulnerable communities&nbsp;</h2>



Wanyun Shao, an associate professor of geography at the <a href="https://www.ua.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Alabama</a>, studies precisely this human dimension of climate change and related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-risk-natural-disasters-doubled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural disasters</a>.&nbsp;



Her research shows that socially vulnerable communities - which are least capable of preparing for disasters or recovering afterward - are usually concentrated in regions which are more susceptible to flooding, especially on the Gulf Coast.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-populations-nbsp-exposed-to-hurricanes">Coastal populations&nbsp;exposed to hurricanes </h2>



Nowadays, almost 40% of the U.S. population lives in coastal areas, many of which are increasingly exposed to hurricanes and high tide flooding that have been worsened by sea level rise.



Particularly, the Gulf of Mexico is prone to multiple climate change-induced severe weather events. For instance, when Hurricane Beryl hit Texas in July 2024 and caused heavy rain and flooding, three million homes and businesses lost power for several days - at the same time when they were exposed to an intense heat wave.&nbsp;



Furthermore, over one-fifth of the population in Harris County (home to Houston), is socially vulnerable, so they are more susceptible to harm from extreme weather.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vulnerable-cities-on-the-gulf-coast-nbsp">Vulnerable cities on the Gulf Coast&nbsp;</h2>



Socially vulnerable populations include the elderly, persons with disabilities, people living in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellite-imagery-used-to-map-global-poverty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">poverty</a>, and mobile home dwellers. These people don't have the necessary resources or physical ability to prepare for storms, or the means to rebuild their homes in the wake of such natural disasters.



Many cities along the Gulf Coast, including Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Alabama, and Tampa, Florida, have large socially vulnerable populations. In addition, in some of these cities, land development and political decisions have increased the risks posed by hurricanes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-challenges-from-urban-sprawl-nbsp">Extreme challenges from urban sprawl&nbsp;</h2>



Houston is a clear case study that shows the extreme challenges arising from unbridled urban sprawl in coastal cities, particularly those most threatened by hurricanes.



From 2000 to 2023, Harris County grew by one-third, adding 1.3 million residents. While the economic boom related to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-population-10-9-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">population growth</a> brought new jobs to the county, many of these jobs do not pay well, making Harris County's poverty rate 16.5% (compared to the national average of 11.5%).



After Hurricane Harvey's massive flood damage in 2017, a heated debate started. Many people pointed out a problematic reality - Houston was built on a swamp.&nbsp;



In these conditions, the laissez-faire mentality of Texas politics, which prioritizes not intervening in population growth, has contributed to unbridled urban development, turning what once was a wetland to concrete land. Thus, with wetlands just paved over, heavy rain cannot be easily absorbed, making new neighborhoods highly vulnerable to flooding.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-need-to-rethink-urban-development-nbsp">Urgent need to rethink urban development&nbsp;</h2>



Previous research by Shao’s research group that focused on risk decision-making has found that, among all land use and land cover types in the county, developed land has increased fastest, from 35% of the county's land in 2000 to 50% in 2020.



Hurricane Harvey provided a good example of the importance of planning for extreme weather events in urban development. Unfortunately, as the hurricane’s devastation fades in the collective memory, increasingly more people are now moving to Houston.



According to Shao and her colleagues, coastal communities cannot afford to wait for a natural disaster's wake-up call to start investing in protecting themselves. To prepare for future such disasters, they must urgently rethink urban development, while keeping the realities of climate change in mind.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-resilience-in-coastal-cities">Hurricane resilience in coastal cities</h2>



Building resilience involves strengthening flood control systems and upgrading emergency response strategies to account for increasingly severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-hurricanes-are-intensifying-faster-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storms</a>. This also requires implementing zoning regulations that restrict construction in high-risk flood zones.&nbsp;



In some cases, it may even be necessary to consider managed retreat, where buyouts are used to relocate vulnerable communities to safer areas.



Raising public awareness is equally crucial. Educational campaigns can inform people about disaster risks, while accurate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flood</a> risk maps can encourage individuals to purchase insurance, select safer locations, and better safeguard their homes against local hazards.&nbsp;



Effective awareness efforts often collaborate with grassroots organizations to expand their reach, ensuring that vulnerable populations are informed and prepared.

During this trip, magma may pause in reservoirs and travel through a winding path before eventually erupting. As magma ascends, it cools, forming small crystals that can be carried to the surface during eruptions.



Once magma reaches the surface, it can either flow as lava or explode into fragmented particles known as pyroclasts. As these materials cool, they solidify into volcanic rocks, which preserve the crystals formed deep within the Earth. These crystals serve as “crystal balls,” preserving the memory of everything they experienced inside the volcano.

The appearance of these crystals depends on their mineral composition. For instance, the green olivine found in Hawaiian lavas and the white plagioclase crystals in the Tweed volcano's lavas on the Queensland-New South Wales border are distinct examples.&nbsp;



However, one of the most critical minerals for studying volcanoes is clinopyroxene. This mineral produces shiny black crystals that hold essential information about the inner workings of volcanoes.

By analyzing the chemical changes within these crystals, scientists can estimate how long it took for magma to reach the surface - information that could help predict future eruptions.

These crystals sometimes grow with different compositions in various directions, a phenomenon called sector zoning, which resembles an hourglass inside the crystal.&nbsp;



Sector zoning provides further clues, suggesting that the magma underwent complex processes such as mixing with other magma, releasing gas, or rising quickly before an eruption.&nbsp;



By identifying these processes in the crystals, volcanologists can watch for similar signs at the surface, offering early indications of potential volcanic activity.



It’s also critical to identify where within the volcano these eruption triggers occur. This information can help determine if certain depths, where earthquakes or ground deformations occur, are particularly significant for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-research-enhances-predictions-on-volcanic-eruptions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predicting an eruption</a>.

The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
