<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.



The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). 



Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.



The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. 



They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. 



That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.



The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.



State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.



Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.



Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. 



Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.



Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. 



In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.



That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.



Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.



Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.



The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.



Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.



The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.



Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.



Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mangrove-forest-reveals-ancient-climate-change-effects/">Mangroves</a> are known to thrive in conditions that most other plants cannot tolerate, such as salty coastal waters. Several species have air-conducting, vertical roots which act like snorkels when tides are high, giving them the appearance of trees floating on stilts.&nbsp;



A new study led by the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">University of California, Riverside</a> (UCR) and the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California, San Diego</a> (UCSD) has investigated how marine mangroves off the coast of La Paz in Mexico absorb and release substances such as carbon and nitrogen, through a process called biogeochemical cycling. The experts were amazed to discovered that these mangrove forests have been quietly keeping carbon out of the Earth’s atmosphere for nearly 5,000 years.



“What’s special about these mangrove sites isn’t that they’re the fastest at carbon storage, but that they have kept the carbon for so long,” said study senior co-author Emma Aronson, an environmental microbiologist at UCR. “It is orders of magnitude more carbon storage than most other ecosystems in the region.”



While the scientists expected that carbon would be found in the layer of peat beneath the forest – which consists of a mixture of submerged sediment and partially decayed organic matter, extending up to ten feet below the coastal water line – they did not expect that carbon to be 5,000 years old.



Since biogeochemical cycling is largely driven by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, the researchers set out to investigate which of these microbes are thriving in in the peat beneath mangroves. The analysis revealed no fungi living there, most likely due to the fact that little oxygen – which is needed by fungi to break down carbon - can make it to the deepest peat layer.&nbsp;



While the scientists identified over 1,100 types of bacteria living beneath the mangroves that can function in extreme environments with low or no oxygen, these microbes are not sufficient for breaking down carbon – which could explain the mangroves’ immense potential of safely storing this hazardous gas.&nbsp;



“The deeper you go into the peat soils, the fewer microorganisms you find. Not much can break down the carbon down there, or the peat itself, for that matter,” said study co-author Mia Maltz, a microbial ecologist at UCR. “Because it persists for so long, it’s not easy to make more of it or replicate the communities of microbes within it.”&nbsp;



“These sites are protecting carbon that has been there for millennia. Disturbing them would cause a carbon emission that we wouldn’t be able to repair any time soon,” added study lead author Matthew Costa, a coastal ecologist at UCSD.



“If we let these forests keep functioning, they can retain the carbon they’ve sequestered out of our atmosphere, essentially permanently. These mangroves have an important role in mitigating climate change,” he concluded.

A team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/">University of California, Santa Barbara</a> has discovered a process far more dynamic than volcanologists had assumed to be possible in the two centuries they have been studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-volcanic-events-linked-to-the-slowing-of-tectonic-plates/">volcanic events</a>. The experts made this discovery while sampling magma from the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland, which erupted in March 2021.



By trying to clarify how deep in the mantle the magma originated, how far beneath the surface it was stored prior to the eruption, and what was happening in the reservoir before and during the eruption, the researchers got “a big surprise” – as study co-author Matthew Jackson put it.



“The assumption was that a magma chamber fills up slowly over time, and the magma becomes well mixed. And then it drains over the course of the eruption.”&nbsp;



According to Jackson (and most other volcanologists), as a result of this well-defined two step process, there are usually no significant changes in the chemical composition of the magma as it flows out of the earth.&nbsp;



“This is what we see at Mount Kīlauea, in Hawaii,” said Jackson. “You’ll have eruptions that go on for years, and there will be minor changes over time.&nbsp;&nbsp;



“But in Iceland, there was more than a factor of 1,000 higher rates of change for key chemical indicators. In a month, the Fagradalsfjall eruption showed more compositional variability than the Kīlauea eruptions showed in decades. The total range of chemical compositions that were sampled at this eruption over the course of the first month span the entire range that has ever erupted in southwest Iceland in the last 10,000 years.”



The experts said this extreme variability is most likely a result of subsequent batches of magma flowing into the chamber from the deeper layers of the mantle. “Picture a lava lamp in your mind. You have a hot lightbulb at the bottom, it heats up a blob and the blob rises, cools and then sinks. We can think of the Earth’s mantle - from the top of the core to under the tectonic plates - operating much like a lava lamp,” explained Jackson.



As the heat causes some regions of the mantle to rise and plumes form and move upwards towards the surface, molten rock accumulates in chambers and crystallizes, gases escape through the crust, and pressure builds allowing the magma to eventually erupt. In the case of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, although what first erupted was the expected “depleted” magma type accumulating in the reservoir, in about a month, the chamber was recharged by deeper, “enriched” type melts with a different composition (higher magnesium and carbon dioxide levels). In yet another month, the magma which dominated the flow was the deeper, enriched type.&nbsp;



Although such rapid, extreme changes&nbsp;in magma composition have never been observed before – most likely due to the fact that opportunities to sample eruptions at such an early stage are not common - they may not be so rare. Further research is needed to assess the frequency of such phenomena in other volcanic eruptions, and clarify the mysterious ways in which volcanoes work.

In a new study from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a>, scientists have looked at the impact of sublethal exposures of oil on mahi-mahi, a commonly sought sport <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-land-animals-had-fewer-skull-bones-than-fish/">fish</a>. Mahi-mahi are found in subtropical regions, including the Gulf of Mexico. Due to this, the scientists are using their research as an analogue for damage from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.&nbsp;



For the investigation, mahi-mahi were captured and placed either in a tank with sublethal amounts of oil or a control tank with clean water. The fish were fitted with satellite tags which collected and transmitted data on depth, acceleration, temperature and location to the scientists. Clips from fins were also taken to assess gene expression.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“Our findings showed that sublethal observations in the laboratory are also observed in wild fish and that they translate to reduced survival and reduced reproduction,” said lead author Lela Schlenker, a graduate of the <a href="https://www.earth.miami.edu/">Rosenstiel School</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“Understanding the direct impacts of oil exposure on wild fish is critically important as deeper and riskier offshore oil drilling operations increase.” said study co-author Professor Martin Grosell.



While still in the lab, the fish showed impacts to their vision, smell, and swimming abilities. There was also evidence that their entire sensory and central nervous systems were incapacitated to some degree.



After release, the mahi-mahi that had been exposed to oil were preyed upon more heavily for the first eight days. Exposed fish also saw a decrease in spawning for a full 37 days compared to control fish.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The scientists conclude that exposure of fish to oil, as happened during the Deepwater Horizon leak, can negatively impact fish and is one more step towards a full reckoning with the damage such oil spills cause.&nbsp;



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.est.2c01783">Environmental Science and Technology</a>.

Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) is a spectacularly successful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/managing-invasive-species-can-improve-climate-resilience/">invasive species</a>. It is indigenous to North America and was introduced into Europe in the late 19th century. Since then it has become established in more than 30 European countries and is currently ranked as the 12th “worst” exotic plant in Europe, in terms of its environmental and socioeconomic impact. And yet the reasons behind the success of this resilient weed have not been investigated.&nbsp;



For as long as humans have been traveling to different parts of the globe, they have carried with them the seeds and spores of plants that do not belong – sometimes this has been intentional, but often it has occurred inadvertently. In this way, humans have succeeded in changing the planet, as alien species have flourished in new regions and brought with them problems for indigenous flora and fauna, and for humans.



Alien species that become invasive currently pose one of the world’s major environmental problems as they outcompete local species and take over their habitats. As a consequence, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has identified&nbsp;invasive alien species as one of the biggest global threats to biodiversity.&nbsp;



“Invasive species are a key factor in the crisis that is affecting biological diversity now,” says Michael D. Martin, professor of evolutionary genomics at the <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu/">Norwegian University of Science and Technology</a>'s&nbsp;(NTNU) University Museum.



There are many examples of alien plants and animals that have become established in new areas and caused havoc among indigenous species. A striking example is the rabbits that were introduced to Australia to make the place feel more like ‘home.’ Within decades there were half a billion rabbits and their destruction of grazing and habitat were notorious. Currently, on Marion Island in the sub-Antarctic, a costly project has been underway to eradicate the mice that were introduced inadvertently and that quickly went to work eating the eggs and chicks of the ground-nesting seabirds that breed there.&nbsp;



Despite numerous such examples, not much research has been done on what makes some alien species able to adapt to new environmental conditions and spread so quickly. An international research group including some of the world’s leading genetic researchers has therefore taken up the case of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) in order to investigate the likely source populations of ragweed introduced into Europe, to test whether there are perhaps fewer plant pathogens in Europe than in North America, and to identify potential genetic reasons for the success of ragweed populations in Europe.



To answer these questions, the researchers conducted analysis of the genomes of ragweed plants, both from North America and from Europe. They also included specimens that were preserved in herbaria, in order to get a historical perspective on genetic changes in populations of this plant and to understand how ragweed genomes have evolved since being introduced into Europe. They searched in particular for the genetic basis of successful invasiveness in these plants. Their results have now been published in the journal&nbsp;<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abo5115">Science Advances</a>.



“We examined the genetic material in 655 specimens of common ragweed, of which 308 were taken from historical plant collections in herbaria. Some of them were as much as 190 years old and are from the time the plant got first introduced to Europe,” says Vanessa C. Bieker, an expert in evolutionary genetics at the NTNU University Museum and lead author on the publication.



The results of the analysis showed that significant changes had occurred in the genomes of ragweed plants in Europe over the past 200 years, but not in those from North America. The researchers state that these changes likely reflect the introduction of ragweeds from multiple diverse sources, as well as genetic drift during introduction bottlenecks. Furthermore, the European ragweed specimens all showed evidence of genes from other Ambrosia&nbsp;species with which they hybridized.&nbsp;



“We discovered that the plant hybridized in Europe with closely related species that were introduced around the same time,” says co-author Michael Martin. This behavior meant that common ragweed did not need to have another common ragweed plant nearby for reproduction purposes as pollen from close relatives could be used to produce seeds. This is especially useful in the early stages of the introduction when population sizes were small.



In more detailed analysis, the researchers found that genes associated with defense against pathogens, plant growth and flowering time had been selected for recently in European populations of ragweed. “The invasive populations in Europe favor the development of genes that contribute to their defense, like ones against pathogens that trigger disease,” says Bieker.



When the ragweed was introduced into Europe it was less exposed to some of its more significant pathogens from back home in the U.S. Some bacteria that commonly infect ragweed plants in North America were absent or rare in Europe, particularly in France where ragweeds were first introduced. This could have helped&nbsp;the species&nbsp;to establish a stable population in France and aided its subsequent spread.&nbsp;



The genomes of ragweed plants from historical collections in France indicate that these early plants were derived from different sources. Eleven percent of them were genetically similar to plants from western North America, 15 percent carried the genetic signature of plants from the eastern North America, and the majority (57 percent) were identified with plants from the Mideast. This indicates that ragweeds were introduced multiple times into France alone, probably mixed in with horse fodder or bags of seed.



Although Denmark is currently the northern limit for the common ragweed, it is now becoming more established there. The plant is not a threat in Norway at the moment, probably because of the country’s harsh climate. However, as global warming changes the world’s temperatures it is likely that the common ragweed will be at an advantage. It grows quickly, and reproduces very successfully using the wind to disperse its pollen. One plant can produce about a billion pollen grains per season, which causes hay fever sufferers much discomfort but means that sexual reproduction can be very effective in this species. It is likely that the advance of the common ragweed will not stop at Denmark, particularly as global warming takes effect.



The authors conclude that their study illustrates the potential of global herbarium collections as a rich source of historical material for the investigation of population genomics over continental, and even global scales. These meticulously curated and often well-preserved plant specimens contain not only the host plant genome but also a complex community of associated microbes that can reveal a rich history of coevolution during the Anthropocene.&nbsp;

Southern cattail (Typha domingensis) is a reedy marsh <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-may-remove-toxic-metals-from-soil/">plant</a> which inhabits fresh to slightly brackish waters and stands about five to 13 feet tall. A new study led by the <a href="https://www5.usp.br/">University of São Paulo</a> (USP) in Brazil has found that these marsh plants can scavenge up to 34 times more manganese from contaminated soils than other plants such as hibiscus, sedges, or rushes that inhabit similar environments. The findings demonstrate the Southern cattail’s potential for use in the sustainable rehabilitation of areas affected by iron mine tailings.



The scientists conducted the study in Regência on the Doce River estuary in the Espírito Santo state, an area that was flooded by part of the 50 million cubic meters of iron mining waste released when the Fundão tailings dam burst in November 2015 in Mariana, a city located in Minas Gerais (a neighboring state to Espírito Santo), leading to the worst environmental disaster in Brazilian history, which affected 41 towns and killed 19 people.&nbsp;



Moreover, the toxic waste that reached the estuary about two weeks later is estimated to have contaminated 240.8 hectares of the Atlantic Rainforest and killed 14 metric tons of fish. While many projects to mitigate the damage have been launched since then, the estuary remains contaminated.



Now, the scientists discovered that the Southern cattail can effectively extract and remove elemental pollutants or lower their bioavailability in soil through a process called phytoremediation.&nbsp;



“We knew from research by others that manganese is a problem in the region, contaminating the water, soil and fish. When we went to the area affected by iron ore tailings, we expected to find that&nbsp;T. domingensis&nbsp;and&nbsp;Eleocharis acutangula&nbsp;[Acute spikerush] accumulated more manganese than&nbsp;H. tiliaceus, a tree species found in the area, but the results showed that&nbsp;T. domingensis&nbsp;can accumulate 13 times more manganese in its aerial parts than the other two species,” explained study lead author Amanda Duim Ferreira, a PhD student in Soil Science at USP.



“These discoveries open up a range of possibilities for the use of phytoremediation. Knowledge of absorption mechanisms can be a basis for growing&nbsp;T. domingensis&nbsp;via different strategies to obtain optimal results,” added study senior author Professor Tiago Ferreira.



"We’re applying several techniques on the basis of what we know about the best time for planting and the number of harvests per year to increase biomass production and remove the most manganese and iron,” concludes Ferreira.

As the frequency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/measuring-the-effect-of-wildfires-on-air-quality/">wildfires</a> increases, more research is needed on the release of toxic pollutants into watersheds, according to a new review study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2021WR030699">Water Resources Research</a>. Better understanding how urban wildfires affect water quality will help water quality managers to anticipate, respond to, and potentially mitigate wildfire impacts.



“Much less studied are the effects of fire burning not only forests and grasslands but also houses, vehicles, and other human-made material,” said study co-author Stephen LeDuc, a biologist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s <a href="https://www.epa.gov/aboutepa/about-center-public-health-and-environmental-assessment-cphea">Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment</a>. “There have only been a few studies of pollutants mobilized from these types of fires.”



Together with his colleagues, LeDuc examined trends in water after wildfires as documented in 184 scientific articles published since 1980. The analysis revealed that stream flow often increases for several years after a wildfire, as do sediments, water temperature, nutrients, as well as toxic metals and organic chemicals - which sometimes reach between ten to 100 times higher concentrations than before the fire.



Some of these dangerous post-wildfire chemicals found in water, including arsenic or benzene, frequently exceed regulatory limits, even in processed drinking water. In addition, many researchers have identified higher concentrations of metals in the ash from the wildfires, which could potentially affect runoff.



Since little research has been done on identifying the variety of pollutants emerging from urban wildfires, water managers and planners are often at a disadvantage when recovering from wildfires. “In my view, the main reason for the knowledge gap is the challenge of setting up an urban water quality monitoring program on short notice, like after a fire,” said Dennis Hallema, a hydrologist at the <a href="https://www.dri.edu/">Desert Research Institute</a> in Nevada, who was not involved in the study. “There’s plenty of interest, but at the end of the day, successful water quality monitoring efforts come out of projects that were approved in time.”



This new study will hopefully help water quality managers and communities plan for, and recover from, the negative impacts of wildfires on their water.



“Fire frequency is increasing in places like in the western U.S. due in part to climate change, and there is potential for areas burned by fire to become longer-term stressors to water quality if the previous vegetation is slow to recover or fails altogether. [But] burned areas could be targeted for restoration efforts, such as erosion control or plantings,” LeDuc concluded.

Throughout Earth’s geologic history, the sea level has risen and fallen numerous times, under the influence of cooling and warming conditions, as well as tectonic plate movements. At times in the past there was no ice at the poles, and the sea surface was several hundred meters higher than it is now. In contrast, when ice covered the planet the sea level was more than a hundred meters lower. These changes are part of Earth’s natural glacial cycles but they are of special interest to climate scientists today as we consider the potential consequences of the current <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-soils-may-be-deeply-changed-by-global-warming/">global warming</a>.



A team of researchers, led by scientists from <a href="https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/">Victoria University of Wellington</a> (NZ) and Birmingham (UK) have recently published the first record of Antarctic Ocean temperatures over the past 45 million years, which offers important insights into future sea level changes. They used a combination of evidence from molecular fossils and machine learning in order to track changes in sea temperature.



The molecular fossils came from core samples obtained during ocean drilling projects. Within these cores are the fossilized remains of lipid molecules that were produced by archaea – single-celled organisms that are similar to bacteria. The lipid molecules were part of the organism’s outer membrane and the composition of these molecules changed in response to differences in sea temperature. By studying these changes, scientists can draw conclusions about the ancient sea temperature which would have surrounded the archaea when they were alive.



While the use of molecular fossils is familiar to paleoclimatologists, the current researchers went a step further and used machine learning to refine the technique. This gave them the first record to date of changing Antarctic sea temperatures throughout the past 45 million years, which represents much of the Cenozoic Period.



The findings, published in Nature Geoscience, enable scientists to pinpoint much more accurately the historic temperatures which caused ice sheets to grow and shrink during that period. This is critical to our understanding of the possible consequences of the current global warming, as the loss of ice sheets and the retreat of glaciers in the Antarctic could mean a sea level rise of up to 50 m.



“The record we’ve produced offers a much more robust overview of fluctuating Antarctic temperatures and how these relate to changes in the amount of ice, and the topography of Antarctica, over this period and paves the way for improved estimates of future events,” explained study lead author Dr. James Bendle.



The link between CO2, sea-surface temperatures and the amount of ice on Antarctica is clearly evidenced in the study’s data from the last 45 million years. But one surprising finding was that ocean cooling did not always correspond to increases in Antarctic ice. This applies specifically to a period of 1 million years of ocean cooling that occurred between 25 and 24 million years ago. “We show that this is likely related to tectonic subsidence and the influx of relatively warm ocean water in the Ross Sea region,” said Dr. Bendle.



“We can see that ice in Antarctica is currently changing, not least with the loss of some ice-shelves and cracks appearing recently in the Thwaites Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the region. This new study of Earth’s past is one of the clearest indications yet that humans continue to produce CO2&nbsp;levels for which we can expect major ice loss at the Antarctic margins, and global sea-level rise over the coming decades and centuries.”



In fact, the researchers say their results suggest we are nearing a ‘tipping point’ where ocean warming, caused by atmospheric CO2,&nbsp;will lead to catastrophic rises in sea levels because of melting ice sheets. They plan to continue to apply biomarker and machine learning approaches to reconstruct the climatic evolution of Antarctica and understand the implications for future warming and sea-level rise.

The release of carbon caused by degradation in the Atlantic Rainforest could result in emissions that are more than 30 percent higher than those&nbsp;associated with climate change. This is the conclusion of a recent study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abl7968">Science Advances</a>, which clarifies carbon sequestration in the Atlantic Rainforest.&nbsp;



“We still know little about the factors that can lead forests to store more or less carbon," said study co-author <a href="https://bv.fapesp.br/en/pesquisador/668300/renato-augusto-ferreira-de-lima">Renato Augusto Ferreira de Lima</a>. "We used a large forest inventory database to see which factors are uppermost in explaining current levels of carbon storage in the Atlantic Rainforest."



"We found that factors relating to the different types of human impact on the forest are key, with two to six times the significance of factors such as climate, soil and the characteristics of the tree species in the forest."



Therefore, the researchers propose that reversing human-caused damage would be the best way to increase carbon sequestration.



The study also considered how climate change would affect the forest's health. If global warming falls within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, they predict the Atlantic Rainforest will release 3.53 (+ 5.12%) tons of carbon per hectare.



"But if the average temperature continues to rise at the current rate, carbon emissions could exceed 9.03 tons per hectare [+ 13.11%]," said study first author Marcela Venelli Pyles, a PhD candidate in the Ecology and Conservation Department of the <a href="https://ufla.br/en/ufla/">Federal University of Lavras</a> (UFLA).



Moreover, forest restoration should include planting denser, larger trees, and whatever methods are used to conserve carbon should be noted when considering carbon stocks.



&nbsp;"The difference between methodologies used in the field can lead to errors in estimating carbon, entailing misinterpretation and inefficient climate change mitigation measures," said Pyles.



Importantly, the authors note that species diversity will suffer if conservation policies only focus on carbon. Therefore, separate actions must be taken for species conservation.

A recent grant from the <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/office-science">Department of Energy’s Office of Science</a> will fund a three-year project led by the <a href="https://www.uh.edu/">University of Houston</a> to investigate the impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-will-clouds-be-affected-by-climate-change/">clouds</a> on our planet’s climate. By studying the interaction between clouds and the tiny particles that comprise them -&nbsp; known as aerosols - the scientists will try to better understand how cloud formation and location in the atmosphere maintain the Earth’s temperature.



“Clouds cover about 70 percent of the Earth’s surface,” said project leader Professor Yunsoo Choi. “They are one of the most essential components of the global climate system because of their regulation of surface precipitation and the atmosphere’s radiation balance,” i.e. the difference between the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth and the amount released back into space.



The scientists will focus on how aerosols form various types of clouds with different radiative impacts. Aerosols – which can be both inorganic, consisting of sulfates, nitrates, or ammonium, and organic, such as black carbon or soil particles – play a fundamental role in cloud formation. When water vapor condenses on their surface, it forms cloud condensing nuclei, which are essentially the “seeds” from which clouds grow.



“The formation of cloud droplets typically cannot occur without aerosols. Clouds strongly affect the Earth’s energy balance by trapping heat near the surface and reflecting solar radiation back to space,” explained study co-author Ali Mousavinezhad.



To better understand the role of aerosols in cloud formation and their impact on the Earth’s climate, the researchers will use data from the Department of Energy-funded Atmospheric Radiation Measurement’s&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.uh.edu/2021-tracer-campaign/index.html">TRacking Aerosol Convection Interaction ExpeRiment</a>, together with data from an aerosol-cloud interaction targeted modelling system.



“For me, the most interesting aspect of this project is the combination of a modeling system with the dataset from an ongoing campaign, happening right here in our backyard,” said study co-author Arman Pouyaei. “The idea is to use this dataset in a novel technical approach. We hope to learn important lessons about the capabilities of current modeling frameworks in representing the impacts of aerosols on cloud formation and climate change.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



“Climate change is primarily discussed in terms of greenhouse gases. By the end of this project, we&nbsp;will gain a deeper understanding of how aerosols as air pollutants influence cloud formation and our planet’s climate, which I am very excited about,” concluded Mousavinezhad.

When under attack, the trees release volatile organic compounds to warn neighboring seedlings. These are the findings from a new study out of the <a href="https://www.uef.fi/en">University of Eastern Finland</a>.



When plants are damaged, they release odorous chemicals into the atmosphere as a way to communicate. This defense mechanism had not been identified in conifer trees. 



“We decided to look at whether conifers undergo a similar response and were amazed at the results,” said study co-author Hao Yu.



The experts found that when Scots pine seedlings are damaged by bark-feeding weevils, they release volatile chemicals into the atmosphere. Undamaged plants exposed to these chemicals also start to release volatiles and prepare themselves to emit more once they are under attack.&nbsp;



“This observation is novel and has broad implications for further research investigating the mechanisms of how plants obtain information from their neighbors,” said Professor James Blande.



After the warning, receiver plants altered resin duct traits, and were subject to reduced amounts of damage by pine weevils. The researchers also discovered that receiver plants had increased their net photosynthesis rate.



The team investigated the responses of receiver plants under elevated ozone conditions to represent more polluted regions. They found that the responses were significantly altered, but the final defense outcome was not affected.



“The different responses of receiver plants made us think that the communication process was eliminated, but receiver plants still had more resistance to weevils,” said Yu.&nbsp;



The research sheds new light on conifer communication, and indicates that it can be substantially altered by air pollution.



The study is published in the <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2022.0963">Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences</a>.

The negative effects of breathing polluted air are well known for adults. Inhaling polluted air has been associated with increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/medical-cannabis-increases-risk-of-heart-arrhythmia/">arrhythmias</a>, and the development of atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty deposits inside the arteries. Although there are many chemical components to polluted air, experts are especially concerned about the levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) because it can be drawn deeply into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.



According to new research published in the <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/journal/jaha">Journal of the American Heart Association</a>, polluted air may have a negative effect on the heart health of teenagers as well. The study examined the impact of inhaling fine particulate matter on the heart rhythms of adolescents and found that this form of air pollution may trigger irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) in healthy teenagers.



“While relatively rare, irregular heart rhythms can lead to&nbsp;sudden cardiac death&nbsp;in otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults. Our findings linking air pollution to irregular heart rhythms suggest that particulate matter may contribute to the risk of sudden cardiac death among youth,” said study lead author Dr. Fan He, an instructor at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.&nbsp;



“Since childhood and adolescent cardiovascular conditions can track into adulthood and affect risk of major cardiovascular disease later in life, identifying modifiable risk factors of cardiac arrhythmia that may cause sudden cardiac death among adolescents should be of great public interest.”



Fine particulates (PM2.5) are tiny particles less than 2.5 microns in size. They derive from the combustion of fuel and from wildfires and, when inhaled deeply, can enter the blood stream. These particles irritate the lungs and blood vessels around the heart and may, over time, increase the risk of disease in the arteries.&nbsp;



The investigators analyzed the impact of breathing PM2.5 pollution on two types of irregular heart rhythms in adolescent participants. Arrhythmia is characterized by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/arrhythmia/about-arrhythmia/premature-contractions-pacs-and-pvcs">premature contraction in the heart muscle</a>, often described as a “skipped heart beat,” but this condition can originate in either the top chambers (atria) or bottom chambers (ventricles) of the heart.&nbsp;



In premature atrial contractions (PACs), the abnormal heart beat usually causes no symptoms or harm, although frequent premature atrial contractions have been related to an increased risk of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/atrial-fibrillation">atrial fibrillation</a>&nbsp;– a severe form of arrhythmia in which the top chambers quiver instead of beating effectively, thereby raising the risk of blood clots and strokes. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are more serious and raise the risk of later heart attacks, strokes, heart failure or sudden cardiac death.



The researchers analyzed health data for 322 adolescents (average age 17 years; 56 percent males; 79 percent non-Hispanic white teens) living in central Pennsylvania who participated in a follow-up evaluation in the Penn State Child Cohort study. That study, conducted between 2002 and 2006, initially recruited children aged between six and twelve years. The data analyzed in this study reviewed results from the follow-up evaluation nearly 7.5 years later (2010-2013).&nbsp;



The children in this group were free of major cardiovascular conditions at the start of the study and were considered at low risk for irregular heart rhythms. In the follow-up study, the researchers simultaneously measured exposure to fine particulate matter in the air each teen breathed (using a device called a nephelometer) for 24 hours, and took EKG tracings of each teen’s heart rhythms via a small wearable device called a Holter monitor.



Data collected during the study showed that the average PM2.5&nbsp;concentration recorded in the air around the participants was approximately 17 micrograms per cubic meter of air (µg/m3) per day, which is well-below the health-based air quality standard of 35 µg/m3/day&nbsp;established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).&nbsp;



Despite this low level of PM2.5&nbsp;present, almost 80 percent of the participants experienced at least one irregular heart rhythm during the 24-hour study period. Of that group, 40 percent had only premature atrial contractions, 12 percent had only premature ventricular contractions, and 48 percent experienced both.



In addition, although no association was found between the concentration of fine particulate matter and the number of premature atrial contractions, there was a link between premature ventricular contractions and the levels of PM2.5&nbsp;. The researchers found an increase of 5 percent in the number of PVCs for each 10 µg/m3&nbsp;increase in PM2.5. This result was recorded within two hours of exposure to higher levels of particulate matter in the air.&nbsp;



“Our study found that air pollution increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and sudden cardiac death, even among healthy adolescents,” said Dr. He. “Protective measures, such as wearing masks and avoiding vigorous physical activities, may be warranted on days that particulate matter concentration is high, especially during early morning rush hours.”



“It is alarming that we were able to observe such a significant impact of air pollution on cardiac arrhythmias when the air quality remained well within the health-based standards established by the EPA. It may suggest that adolescents who live in highly polluted areas such as inner cities are at even higher risk.”&nbsp;



The results were consistent with data previously obtained for adults, using similar methods, although the increase in premature ventricular contractions was even higher in adults. The researchers propose that reducing the risk of irregular heart rhythms in adolescents may reduce their risk of developing heart disease as adults.



“The most effective way to reduce everyone’s exposure to air pollution is by supporting more robust national-level air quality regulations,” said American Heart Association volunteer expert Dr. Robert D. Brook, who has co-authored several American Heart Association scientific statements on air pollution.



“PM2.5&nbsp;levels have fallen dramatically since the 1970s–80s due to regulations that have been unquestionably linked to improved health effects and life expectancy. We outlined, in a recent AHA scientific statement titled&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000000931?utm_campaign=sciencenews20-21&amp;utm_source=science-news&amp;utm_medium=phd-link&amp;utm_content=phd11-05-20">Personal-Level Protective Actions Against Particulate Matter Air Pollution Exposure</a>,&nbsp;strategies and activity or behavioral changes that may reduce pollution exposure, such as portable air cleaners, facemasks, respirators and exercising during non-peak hours. However, there have been no studies to show these measures can actually prevent adverse clinical health effects such as heart attacks.”



According to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000000930?utm_campaign=sciencenews20-21&amp;utm_source=science-news&amp;utm_medium=phd-link&amp;utm_content=phd11-05-20">2020 American Heart Association policy statement</a>, ambient air pollution is widely recognized as a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease and death. In 2017, exposure to particulate air pollution was estimated to be associated with more than 7 million premature deaths and the loss of 147 million healthy life-years globally. The Association recommends further development of evidence-based policy approaches, continued investment in research and greater innovation and transformational partnerships to reduce the cardiovascular burden of ambient air pollutants in the U.S.



“The most interesting and significant aspect of this study is clearly that the results were found in healthy young adolescents,” said Dr. Brook. “The study adds support for the concern that even healthy young people are not immune to adverse cardiovascular responses to PM2.5&nbsp;and at exposure levels within National Ambient Air Quality Standards for 24 hours, established by the EPA. It is plausible that the findings help explain the potential reason for the time of onset of arrhythmias and even sudden death in some susceptible young people.”



Dr. He and colleagues are currently evaluating the impact of air pollution on other markers of cardiac electrical activity.

Recent studies using computational modeling to investigate how melting ice in Antarctica may impact the world’s oceans have largely focused on aspects such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-prevent-a-catastrophic-meltdown-of-the-worlds-largest-ice-sheet/">ice-sheet</a> geometry, fracture, and surface melting, which could potentially trigger or accelerate ice-sheet mass loss. Now, a research team from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> has identified and described an additional process which could have a similarly strong impact on the future of Antarctic ice sheets: the thawing of the bed at the interface of the land and the miles-thick ice sheets above it – a phenomenon known as basal thaw.



By using numerical ice-sheet models, the researchers tested whether the onset of basal thaw could lead to significant ice loss within a 100-year period, and discovered that triggering thaw can lead to mass loss in areas of the ice sheet which are not usually associated with instability and sea-level rise contributions at such a short timescale.



“There really has been little to no continental-wide work that looks at the onset of thawing –&nbsp;that transition from frozen ice to ice at the melting point, where a little bit of water at the bed can cause the ice to slide,” said study lead study author Eliza Dawson, a doctoral student in Geophysics at Stanford. “We were interested in learning how big an effect thawing could have and what regions of the ice sheet were potentially most susceptible.”



Together with her colleagues, Dawson modeled temperature changes at Antarctica’s base according to shifts in friction caused by the ice sheet sliding over the land beneath it. The simulations revealed that in East Antarctica - an area considered relatively stable compared to West Antarctica - the Enderby-Kemp and George V Land regions would be most sensitive to basal thaw. If thawing were to occur, such areas could end up being leading sea-level rise contributors, comparable to the rapidly evolving and highly unstable Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica.



“The whole community is really focusing on Thwaites right now,” said study senior author Dustin Schroeder, an associate professor of Geophysics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford. “But some of the regions that are the usual suspects for big, impactful changes aren’t the most provocative and impactful areas in this study.”



Although scientists do not yet know what forces are most capable of triggering basal thaw in the potentially susceptible regions identified in this study, one possible driver could be changing ocean conditions. “Warm ocean water does not necessarily reach these East Antarctica regions as it does in parts of West Antarctica, but it’s nearby, so there’s potential that could change,” Professor Schroeder explained. “When you consider the recent theoretical work showing that thermal processes at the bed can be easy to activate – even spontaneous – it makes near-term thawing of the ice-sheet bed seem like a far easier switch to flip than we’d thought.”



“Follow-on work will be needed to take a closer look at these regions that this paper identified. Showing that thawing at the bed can result in mass loss from the ice sheet is a process that the community needs to understand and really start looking at – especially in these potentially vulnerable areas,” Dawson concluded.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
