Plants perched high on mountain slopes often seem untouchable. Many people picture these hardy survivors persisting no matter what the world throws at them.



Jill Anderson from the University of Georgia (<a href="https://www.uga.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UGA</a>) led a nine-year study that tracked more than 100,000 <a href="https://ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-learn/plants-trees/flowering-plants/drummonds-rock-cress" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Drummond’s rockcress</a> plants (also known as Boechera stricta), which are short-lived and grow in the mountains of North America. 



The <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adr1010" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">findings</a> show that climate change is accelerating so quickly that natural processes struggle to keep up, putting even these widely distributed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-future-climate-conditions-will-transform-plant-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> at risk.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mountain-plants-face-unexpected-threats">Mountain plants face unexpected threats</h2>



Some assume that cool alpine air insulates species in higher elevations. Yet these peaks are not immune to changing weather patterns, which shift temperatures and snowpack conditions.



Scientists use the term <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">montane</a> to describe mountainous regions where cold temperatures shape <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2025-our-power-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant</a> and animal communities. In these settings, species must cope with short growing seasons and sudden weather swings.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-adaptation-under-threat">Local adaptation under threat</h2>



Many species across large geographic ranges show <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982222001105" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">local adaptation</a>, meaning each population is especially fit for its specific climate. A <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-could-soon-talk-to-farmers-and-listen-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant</a> growing at one elevation may thrive in cooler settings, while relatives at lower altitudes prefer warmer days.



When warming speeds up faster than these populations can adjust, their specialized genetic traits can become a burden. 



Scientists have <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31061126/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warned</a> that climate change may shrink viable habitats before plant populations can produce new traits or spread existing genes to more favorable locations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gene-flow-in-the-wrong-direction">Gene flow in the wrong direction </h2>



Natural <a href="https://www.nature.com/scitable/knowledge/library/natural-selection-genetic-drift-and-gene-flow-15186648/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gene flow</a> is the mixing of genetic material between populations when seeds or pollen move across different areas. In mountain landscapes, genes often travel downslope, which can be a problem when populations uphill need genes adapted to warmer conditions.



Once temperatures ramp up, plants at higher elevations may lag behind in acquiring the beneficial traits found at lower sites. Many experts believe that if gene flow continues to flow in the wrong direction, certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2025-what-were-really-fighting-for/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a> will lose out.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-mountain-plants-are-not-safe">Local mountain plants are not safe</h2>



Many mountain plants live in narrow climate zones. Even small temperature changes can force them to move if suitable conditions shift uphill.



Furthermore, relocation can be slow. Limited seed dispersal and competition for newly available terrain make uphill migration a difficult gamble.



In the Colorado Rockies, researchers tested how these plants fare when the snowpack is manipulated to reflect varying future scenarios. Conditions mimicked both historical climates and predicted warmer settings.



Their data showed that populations already adapted to local sites were not safe just because they fell within the broader species range. As the weather changed, those local advantages vanished.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-gene-flow-alone-is-not-enough">Why gene flow alone is not enough</h2>



If some high-altitude plants cannot access the genetic diversity they need, their survival chances drop. Rising temperatures also move faster than seeds can scatter uphill.



It is possible that downhill gene exchange will leave upper populations stuck with less-suitable traits. Over time, that mismatch poses a real problem for any species in a fast-warming world.



Researchers suggest <a href="https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/new-research-shows-first-successful-demonstration-assisted-gene-flow-corals" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">assisted gene flow</a>, which involves moving seeds or plants from warmer-adapted locations to cooler zones. The aim is to insert heat-tolerant genes into colder populations before it is too late.



Such action requires careful planning to avoid harming the resident community. It can help maintain enough genetic variation for future climate scenarios.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mountain-plants-may-not-adapt-in-time">Mountain plants may not adapt in time</h2>



Sally Aitken, a professor at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of British Columbia</a>, elaborated on the research in a related perspective.



"The lessons from Anderson et al. are sobering with respect to the ability of natural populations to adapt to, and persist under, rapid global warming,” she wrote. 



This warning echoes broader concerns that standard models often miss how real populations respond. Simple range maps do not reveal the underlying genetic limits that influence whether plants can hang on.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-conservation">Implications for conservation</h2>



Some protected areas might not serve as reliable safe havens if warming outpaces adaptation. That’s especially worrisome for species already confined to mountaintops, where there is nowhere higher to go.



Those who manage conservation efforts might include assisted gene flow when other approaches are too slow. But balancing interventions with natural processes is tricky business.



Plants form the backbone of many mountain ecosystems. If they fade away, pollinators and seed-eating animals lose vital resources.



Such ripple effects can spread downhill, affecting everyone relying on mountain watersheds for irrigation and drinking water. Decreased plant cover can alter soil stability, which influences runoff and erosion patterns.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-species-will-need-a-helping-hand">Some species will need a helping hand</h2>



There is no universal fix. Solutions must address local challenges and take into account how quickly climates are shifting uphill.



Short-lived species can adapt quickly under the right conditions, but only if gene flow and the environment align. That makes thoughtful conservation choices even more urgent.



Some plants will persist if we reduce greenhouse gas emissions and give them time to adjust. Others may need a helping hand when relocation or genetic mixing becomes their best option.



Experts believe that mountain environments could lose more species if assistance does not arrive. Adaptive capacity has its limits when conditions change too fast.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-set-a-bedtime-alarm-that-helps-them-survive-the-night/">Plants</a> have been found preserved beneath mile-deep Greenland ice, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/">University of Vermont</a>. The experts believe that in the recent geologic history of Greenland, a vegetated landscape stood where an ice sheet as big as Alaska stands today.

The research confirms the troubling realization that Greenland's ice has melted off entirely during warm periods like the one we are now experiencing as a result of human-induced climate change.

With 20 feet of potential sea level rise frozen in the Greenland Ice Sheet, every coastal city in the world is at its mercy. In order to predict how the quickly the ice will melt in the future, it is critical for scientists to understand the ice sheet's behavior in the past.

The new study provides the strongest evidence yet that Greenland is more sensitive to climate change than what was previously expected. 

"Our study shows that Greenland is much more sensitive to natural climate warming than we used to think - and we already know that humanity's out-of-control warming of the planet hugely exceeds the natural rate," said UVM scientist Andrew Christ.

In 1966, the U.S. Army drilled down through nearly a mile of ice in northwestern Greenland. A massive sediment sample was recovered, but then lost in a freezer for decades. 

Two years ago, Christ examined the sediment under a microscope. He was stunned to see twigs and leaves instead of just sand and rock. 

In collaboration with an international team of researchers, Christ has been analyzing these fossil plants. The findings suggest that most, or all, of Greenland was ice-free within the last few hundred-thousand years.

"Ice sheets typically pulverize and destroy everything in their path, but what we discovered was delicate plant structures - perfectly preserved," said Christ. "They're fossils, but they look like they died yesterday. It's a time capsule of what used to live on Greenland that we wouldn't be able to find anywhere else."

The sediment sample examined for the study was pulled up from beneath the ice at Camp Century, located 75 miles inland from the coast and only 800 miles from the North Pole. The team's findings suggest that this ice completely vanished at least once within the last million years and was covered with vegetation, perhaps even a forest. 

"This is not a twenty-generation problem," said Paul Bierman, a geoscientist at UVM. "This is an urgent problem for the next 50 years."

"Greenland may seem far away, but it can quickly melt, pouring enough into the oceans that New York, Miami, Dhaka - pick your city - will go underwater."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

In a new report from <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">UC Davis</a>, experts have discovered that "total eradication" is not the best approach to target <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-species-are-driving-rapid-evolution/">invasive species</a>. According to the researchers, lessons learned from a failed experiment are leading to more successful strategies for controlling non-native species. 

"A failure in science often leads to unexpected directions," said study lead author Professor Edwin Grosholz. "We slapped our foreheads at the time, but with thought and understanding, it's told us a lot about what we shouldn't be doing and provided a way forward for us. The world should get less focused on total eradication and work toward functional eradication."

The researchers consider functional eradication to be a much more effective approach to invasive species management. This technique was described in a previous study led by the University of Alberta and co-authored by Professor Grosholz.

In 2009, intensive efforts were focused on fully eradicating the European green crab from Stinson Beach's Seadrift Lagoon in California. This crab costs the U.S. commercial shellfish industry about $20 million in losses every year. 

By 2013, 90 percent of the crabs had been removed from the estuary, and the population had dropped from 125,000 to fewer than 10,000 individuals. A year later, however, the population had exploded to about 300,000 green crabs - nearly triple the pre-eradication population size.

The scientists were monitoring four additional neighboring bays, and no such population explosions of the green crab were observed at those sites. This finding indicates that the increase in crabs was the result of eradication efforts and not environmental changes.

The experts determined that the population explosion in the Seadrift Lagoon was due in part to the fact that the adult crabs typically cannibalize younger individuals. With most of the adults removed, juveniles grew unchecked and overcompensated for the loss of adults.

The study serves as a precautionary tale for natural resource managers. "Don't try to get them all, or it could come back to bite you," said Professor Grosholz.

"Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, this study highlights the need to evaluate possible unintended consequences in selecting management strategies and tailoring these to the particular context and expected outcome," said study co-author Greg Ruiz.

Just as researchers described in the Alberta-led study, the UC Davis team recommends a "Goldilocks level" approach, where the population is low enough to protect native species without risking a population explosion of the invasive species.

Total eradication is not the best approach to invasive species

A new study from the <a href="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/">University of Leeds</a> has revealed that melting glaciers are accelerating the rate of plant decomposition downstream, which has a major influence on the global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/repeated-fires-reduce-the-ability-of-forests-to-store-carbon/">carbon</a> cycle. This means that melting glaciers are potentially speeding up carbon emissions, and therefore climate change, in a reinforcing feedback loop.

According to the report, the loss of glaciers worldwide enhances the breakdown of complex carbon molecules in rivers. The study represents the first time glacier-fed mountain rivers have been linked to higher rates of plant decomposition.

As a result of climate change, mountain rivers have warmer temperatures and other conditions that are favorable for fungi to become established. The fungi break down plant leaves, wood, and other organic materials, releasing the carbon that is stored inside of them. 

The researchers measured this process in 57 rivers across six mountain ranges worldwide. Study lead author Sarah Fell said that similar patterns were discovered in all of the sites, which were located in Austria, Ecuador, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United States.

"We found increases in the rate of organic matter decomposition in mountain rivers, which can then be expected to lead to more carbon release to the atmosphere," said Fell. "This is an unexpected form of climate feedback, whereby warming drives glacier loss, which in turn rapidly recycles carbon in rivers before it is returned to the atmosphere."

Mountain glaciers are shrinking at an unprecedented rate, and climate change will continue to drive ice loss throughout the remainder of this century. 

To investigate how critical river processes like plant decomposition and carbon cycling are impacted by glacier ice loss, the researchers designed an experiment using artists' canvas fabric to mimic plant materials like leaves that accumulate naturally in rivers. The canvas material was cotton, which is predominantly made up of cellulose, just like plants.

Canvas strips were left in the rivers for approximately one month, and then tested to determine how easily they could be ripped. The cotton material ripped more easily as fungi colonized them, which confirmed that decomposition is accelerated in warming rivers.

"Our finding of similar patterns of cellulose breakdown at sites all around the world is really exciting because it suggests that there might be a universal rule for how these river ecosystems will develop as mountains continue to lose ice," said study co-author Professor Lee Brown. "If so, we will be in much improved position to make forecasts about how river ecosystems will change in future."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/nclimate/">Nature Climate Change</a>.

Melting glaciers speed up plant decomposition, carbon emissions

In a new study from <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a>, experts have determined that the combination of urban development and climate change will cause devastating <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/high-tide-flooding-is-increasing-along-the-u-s-east-coast/">flooding</a> in U.S. cities.

On September 15, 2009, the Atlanta metropolitan area was hit with intense rainfall and catastrophic flooding. Entire neighborhoods were submerged, the state's busiest expressway was underwater, cars were swept away, and rising flood waters mixed with sewage.

The new research suggests that comparable scenarios will strike other urban areas in the coming years as a result of two coinciding human activities, greenhouse gas emissions and urban development.

"When we account for these twin forcing agents of environmental change, the effect of the built environment and the effect of greenhouse gasses, we note a strong tendency toward increased extreme precipitation over future US metropolitan regions," said study lead author Professor Matei Georgescu.

Previous research has shown that urban development intensifies precipitation through the urban heat island effect, which makes it hotter in cities compared to surrounding regions. The heat creates additional energy that forces the air to rise, condense, and form precipitation. 

The amount of precipitation a city receives either increases or decreases in response to the heat island effect. 

The researchers used regional climate modeling to investigate how extreme precipitation in cities throughout the continental United States would be affected by both urban development and climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

"This new study is unique," said Professor Georgescu. "We used climate-scale simulations with a regional climate model to examine potential changes in future extreme precipitation resulting from both urban expansion and increases in greenhouse gasses, across dozens of cities across the continental United States."

In essence, the results showed that incorporating greenhouse gasses into a regional climate model offset the sometimes-diminishing effect of urban development on extreme precipitation, said Professor Georgescu.

"These are the effects our cities are likely to experience when accounting for the twin forcing agents of urban expansion and greenhouse gas emissions, simultaneously. What this means for U.S. cities in the future is the need for a consistent response to an increase in extreme precipitation. We're no longer likely to see a decrease in precipitation as we've seen before."

Denver, Phoenix, and Houston are some of the cities like Atlanta that appear to be vulnerable to extreme precipitation and flooding. Professot Georgescu said the study's findings show the pressing need for cities to develop policies to address flooding that threatens each city's unique resilience and planned infrastructure investments.

"If we trust the models' capability to simulate average and extreme precipitation so well, and our results demonstrate such simulation skill, then we can conduct simulations that include future urbanization, future greenhouse gasses, separately and then together, and trust what the model will tell us."

Professot Georgescu noted that it's not just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. "It's also about how you build cities. How extensive they are, how vertical they are, how dense they are, how much vegetation there is, how much waste heat you put into the environment through electricity use, through air conditioning, or through transportation. All of these things can impact future precipitation in our cities."

The study highlights the complex and regionally specific ways in which the competing forces of greenhouse gases and urban development can impact rainfall across U.S. metropolitan regions, explained Professor Ashley Broadbent of ASU's School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.

"This complexity reinforces that future adaptation efforts must be informed by simulations that account for these interacting agents of environmental change," said Professor Broadbent.

In a new study from the <a href="https://www.agronomy.org/">American Society of Agronomy</a>, experts have discovered that excess cow manure leads to healthier <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-is-a-source-of-food-contamination/">soils</a> that have improved microbial communities. This is not easy to achieve in dry areas like the Southern High Plains of Texas.

"We know that planting perennial grasslands for cattle production can help protect and restore soil in semi-arid lands that are likely to erode and degrade from intense farming. But producers need additional ways to increase soil carbon and nutrient stores," said study lead author Lindsey Slaughter.

She describes soil health as the ability of a living soil ecosystem to perform a variety of important functions, such as nutrient cycling and storing and purifying water.

The "living" part of the soil is made up of a community of microorganisms that help maintain its health. For example, they help break down materials like manure so that its nutrients become part of the soil.

"Improving the soil's ability to perform these roles and support plant and animal life is our target for soil health," said Slaughter. "Adding the manure can provide a boost of material that can be incorporated into soil organic matter. This helps provide a stronger foundation for more microbial activity and nutrient cycling."

To investigate, the experts applied a low level of manure to two types of pastures. These pastures consisted of either grass that was fertilized occasionally or a mix of grass and legumes that was not fertilized.

Overall, manure helped increase soil organic carbon and the number of microbes in the soil. It took almost a year and a half to see these changes, but the researchers said this is not totally surprising.

"This tells us that it can take a long time for even a little added compost to become incorporated into the soil organic matter of semi-arid grasslands, but it definitely helps," said Slaughter.

"We think this is mostly due to the dry climate at our study site," says Slaughter. "We commonly get little rainfall per year. The microbial community was not able to work quickly or efficiently to decompose the manure without water."

The experts found that the pastures which had received fertilizer responded better to the manure. This is likely because the nitrogen in the fertilizer helped the microbes decompose the manure better.

"Microbes help directly with releasing nutrients from organic material in a form that plants can use, as well as decomposing those residues to build soil organic matter," said Slaughter. "A lot of work has been done on how this can help improve cropping systems. However, we wanted to also test this on forage pastures."

According to Slaughter, the next steps in the research are to determine whether more manure or multiple applications would get faster results. They also plan to investigate if irrigation or fertilizer would help incorporate the manure faster.

"We need more research along these lines to help us design strategies that quickly and effectively increase soil health and productivity in these grasslands," said Slaughter. 

"This helps farmers save money on nutrients and amendments while building soil organic matter and nutrient cycling capacity. This also saves them water and protects against soil degradation."

In a new study from <a href="https://www.cell.com/">Cell Press</a>, experts report on how environmental DNA could be used to monitor grass pollen levels and to help identify which of thousands of types of grasses are triggers for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-peanuts-allergies/">allergic</a> reactions. Grass pollen is responsible for respiratory conditions such as allergic asthma and hay fever.

"These findings represent a first step towards changing and improving our understanding of the complex relationships between pollen and population health," said study lead author Benedict Wheeler of the University of Exeter. 

"If confirmed and refined, this research could help to improve pollen forecasts and warnings in the future, supporting individual and community-level prevention strategies and management of healthcare system responses."

The researchers noted that over 400 million people around the world suffer from allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, while another 300 million have asthma. 

Even though grass is a common allergen, it has remained unclear which of more than 11,000 species are the main triggers. 

"Previous investigations of airborne grass pollen have been constrained by the way in which concentrations of grass pollen in the atmosphere are typically monitored: using optical microscopy to identify and count pollen grains collected from aerial samplers," said study co-author Francis Rowney. 

"Since grass pollen grains from different taxa are generally not distinguishable using optical microscopy, most epidemiology has focused on population exposure to total grass pollen concentrations and how they associate with allergy-related health outcomes."

For the current investigation, the experts used environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling to measure airborne pollen from common grass species over two seasons. 

Based on this data, the team looked for correlations between the prevalence of particular types of grass pollen and the incidence of severe asthma episodes, as well as the prescriptions for allergy medicines.

The study revealed that the prevalence of airborne pollen from different grass species was largely variable throughout the season. The results also indicated that some types of grass pollen are more harmful to human health than others. 

"We've known for a long time that grass pollen has important implications for health at population scales, but, we didn't really know very much about different types of grass pollen," said study co-author Georgina Brennan.

"This research suggests that there may be important differences in the public health impacts of pollen from different grasses. It suggests we should work to find out more and to consider whether the way we manage pollen health risks - such as warnings in the weather forecast - can be improved."

Disposable face masks made from plastic microfibers are a ticking time bomb for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-stars-may-be-drowning-in-their-environment/">environment</a>, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.sdu.dk/en">University of Southern Denmark</a>. Based on recent studies, the study authors estimate that 129 billion face masks are used each month, which is the equivalent of three million masks per minute. 

The experts report that most of the billions of masks that are being used on a monthly basis are disposable face masks made from plastic microfibers.

The researchers warn that, with increasing reports on inappropriate disposal of masks, it is urgent to recognize this potential environmental threat and prevent it from becoming the next big plastic problem.

"We know that, like other plastic debris, disposable masks may also accumulate and release harmful chemical and biological substances, such as bisphenol A, heavy metals, as well as pathogenic microorganisms," said study co-author and environmental toxicologist Elvis Genbo Xu.

The alarmingly high number of masks that are being produced is comparable to that of plastic bottles, which is about 43 billion per month. Unlike plastic bottles, however, there are no official guidelines for recycling face masks. This makes them more likely to be disposed of as solid waste, explained the study authors. 

Disposable face masks are plastic products that are not biodegradable and may break down into smaller microplastics that are now invading even the most remote and pristine ecosystems. 

According to the experts, a major concern is that the masks are directly made from microsized plastic fibers with a thickness of ~1 to 10 micrometers. 

"When breaking down in the environment, the mask may release more micro-sized plastics, easier and faster than bulk plastics like plastic bags," wrote the researchers.

"Such impacts can be worsened by a new-generation mask, nanomasks, which directly use nano-sized plastic fibers (with a diameter smaller than 1 micrometer) and add a new source of nanoplastic pollution."

The study authors emphasized that they do not know how masks contribute to the large number of plastic particles detected in the environment, simply because no data on mask degradation in nature exists.

"But we know that, like other plastic debris, disposable masks may also accumulate and release harmful chemical and biological substances, such as bisphenol A, heavy metals, as well as pathogenic microorganisms. These may pose indirect adverse impacts on plants, animals and humans," said Xu.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.springer.com/journal/11783">Frontiers of Environmental Science &amp; Engineering</a>.

Rapid climate changes across the Arctic and Antarctic regions are causing serious concerns over sea level rise, as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meltwater-is-a-driving-force-behind-disappearing-glaciers/">glaciers</a> and sea ice vanish at unprecedented rates. During the second half of the 20th century, the Antarctic Peninsula was one of the fastest warming places on Earth. 

The primary cause of global is burning fossil fuels, which release heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Ocean currents, atmospheric variations, and wind patterns also play a major role in driving up temperatures. 

In a new study from the <a href="https://www.rois.ac.jp/en/">Research Organization of Information and Systems</a>, researchers set out to identify which specific climate factors are responsible for the alarming speed of ice retreat observed on the Antarctic Peninsula.

"The impacts of climate variabilities over the mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere on this Antarctic warming have yet to be quantified," explained study lead author Dr. Kazutoshi Sato.

To investigate, his team analyzed climate changes in the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean to determine whether these changes could be linked to temperature variations in the Antarctic Peninsula.

The study was focused on temperature data from six stations across the Antarctic Peninsula, as well as wind and cyclone patterns over the Tasman sea and the Southern Ocean from 1979 to 2019.

The experts discovered that heating in the Tasman Sea modifies the wind patterns over the Southern Ocean and transfers heat to the Antarctic Peninsula through Rossby waves. This effect takes place even without unusual heating in the tropics, and is more prominent in the winter months when cyclones are more active. 

"We have shown that warm winter episodes in the Tasman Sea influence warm temperature anomalies over key regions of West Antarctica, including the Antarctic Peninsula, through a poleward shift of South Pacific cyclone tracks," explained Dr. Sato.

According to study co-author Dr. Jun Inoue, identifying the factors that are responsible for melting the Antarctic ice sheet will help scientists, policymakers, and administrations devise measures for people who will be most affected by the rising sea levels.

The researchers noted that their findings can also aid the future forecast of ice sheet melting in Antarctica and consequent global sea level rise.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

In a new study from <a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/">North Carolina State University</a>, experts have found that rising temperatures are detrimental to rice yields. Even more recent strains of rice, which have been engineered to cope with environmental stressors like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-heatwaves-will-intensify-due-to-thinning-ocean-layer/">heat</a>, are less successful in warmer conditions. 

The research was focused on the productivity of various types of rice grown on farms in the Philippines. Despite the fact that the Philippines is of the top 10 countries in global rice production, the country also imports a large amount of rice in order to meet demands. 

Study co-author Professor Roderick Rejesus said that teasing out the effects of temperature on rice yields is important to understand whether rice-breeding efforts have helped address the environmental challenges faced by modern society, including global warming.

The investigation was focused on rice yields and atmospheric conditions from 1966 to 2016 in Central Luzon, which is a major rice-growing region of the Philippines. 

"This rich dataset allowed us to see what was actually happening at the farm level, rather than only observing behavior at higher levels of aggregation like in provinces or districts," said Professor Rejesus.

The researchers analyzed three varieties of rice planted during the 50-year study period, including traditional varieties; early modern varieties, which were bred for higher yields; and recent modern varieties that were bred for particular characteristics such as heat or pest resistance.

"Taken all together, there are two main implications here," said Professor Rejesus. "The first is that, at the farm level, there appears to be a 'yield gap' between how rice performs in breeding trials and on farms, with farm performance of recent varieties bred to be more tolerant to environmental stresses not being statistically different relative to the older varieties."

"The second is that rice breeding efforts may not have reached their full potential such that it may be possible to produce new varieties that will statistically perform better than older varieties in a farm setting."

According to Professor Rejesus, the findings can be applied to other rice-breeding countries, like Vietnam, because the timing of the release of various rice varieties is somewhat similar to that of the Philippines.

"Plant-breeding institutions can learn from this type of analysis, too. It provides guidance as to where research funding may be allocated by policymakers to further improve the high temperature tolerance of rice varieties available to farmers."

Professor Rejesus plans to assess other agricultural practices and innovations that affect crop yields - such as plants that can be grown during the off season to keep soils healthy - to investigate whether they can mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.

The study is published in the <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14678276">American Journal of Agricultural Economics</a>.

In a new study from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>, scientists report that traces of Earth's early magma ocean have been discovered in ancient rocks in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mineral-dust-is-melting-the-greenland-ice-sheet/">Greenland</a>. 

The research is providing new insight into a critical time during the formation of the Earth, when a deep sea of magma covered its surface and extended hundreds of kilometers into its interior.

"There are few opportunities to get geological constraints on the events in the first billion years of Earth's history. It's astonishing that we can even hold these rocks in our hands - let alone get so much detail about the early history of our planet," said study lead author Dr. Helen Williams.

The gradual cooling and crystallization of the "magma ocean" produced the chemistry and x structure of the planet's interior.

The rocks, recovered from Greenland's Isua supracrustal belt, date back 3.6 billion years. The chemical remnants contained in them provide a window into a time when the planet started to solidify. 

According to the experts, the findings suggest that other rocks on Earth's surface may also preserve evidence of ancient magma oceans.

"The geochemical signals we report in the Greenland rocks bear similarities to rocks erupted from hotspot volcanoes like Hawaii - something we are interested in is whether they might also be tapping into the depths and accessing regions of the interior usually beyond our reach," said study co-author Dr.  Oliver Shorttle.

The team conducted a forensic chemical analysis on the rocks and identified residues of some of the crystals left behind as the ancient magma ocean cooled.

"It was a combination of some new chemical analyses we did and the previously published data that flagged to us that the Isua rocks might contain traces of ancient material. The hafnium and neodymium isotopes were really tantalizing, because those isotope systems are very hard to modify - so we had to look at their chemistry in more detail," said study co-author Dr. Hanika Rizo.

Most of the rocks in Earth's interior that formed from magma ocean crystallization have been mixed up by convection in the mantle, but scientists believe that some crystal graveyards may have remained undisturbed for billions of years in isolated areas deep at the mantle-core boundary

"Those samples with the iron fingerprint also have a tungsten anomaly - a signature of Earth's formation - which makes us think that their origin can be traced back to these primeval crystals," said Dr. Williams.

The researchers plan to expand their search for clues in ancient rocks to gain a better understanding of Earth's early magma ocean. 

"We've been able to unpick what one part of our planet's interior was doing billions of years ago, but to fill in the picture further we must keep searching for more chemical clues in ancient rocks," said study co-author Dr. Simon Matthews from the University of Iceland.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Climate change is triggering harmful ecological changes in North America's largest temperate rainforest. The researchers said that even though this region is extremely remote, it is not immune from the negative impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-may-have-altered-river-flow-worldwide/">climate</a> change.

The northeast Pacific coastal temperate rainforest in southeast Alaska can store more than 1,000 tons of carbon per hectare in biomass and soil. Across this region, glaciers are disappearing faster than most other places on the planet, and winter snowfall is turning into winter rain. 

"This is an incredible landscape in a relatively compact area we have as much biomass carbon as 8% of the lower 48 states put together," said study co-lead author Professor Brian Buma of <a href="https://www.ucdenver.edu/">CU Denver</a>. 

"The 200-foot trees, the deep soils - it's just layers and layers of life. And that land is so intertwined with the water that any change in one means massive change in the other, downstream and into the ocean."

Throughout the temperate rainforest, global warming is increasing temperatures in streams which can harm salmon. Climate change is also boosting ground temperatures, with potentially fatal consequences for trees.

"Coastal temperate rainforests (CTRs) epitomize how connections between terrestrial, freshwater, and nearshore marine ecosystems are being altered by temperature increases, precipitation changes, and the loss of glacial mass," wrote the researchers.

The temperate rainforest in Southeast Alaska is one of the most pristine and intact ecosystems on the continent. As the climate warms, the forest is growing faster and removing large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.

The experts report that a lot of this carbon "leaks" out through the creeks and rivers, where marine ecosystems thrive on the flow of energy off the land.

"Coastal margins are highly active zones at the interface between land and ocean, encompassing tightly linked, dynamic, and productive ecosystems," explained the study authors. They noted that climate change is now threatening the resilience of these complex social-ecological systems.

"This region is immensely important to global carbon cycles and our national carbon strategy, but we still don't know the direction overall carbon stocks and movement will take as the world warms," said Professor Buma. 

"While there is ample research identifying how important this area is, more work is needed to determine where this large reservoir will trend in the future."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://academic.oup.com/bioscience">Oxford Academic BioScience</a>.

A new study by Earth scientists at <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">UH Mānoa</a> has revealed that sea level rise is driving wastewater into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/model-predicts-the-fate-of-plastic-debris-in-the-ocean/">ocean</a>. The experts report that sewer lines and other coastal wastewater infrastructure are likely to flood with groundwater as the sea level swells.

The research is the first of its kind to provide direct evidence that wastewater infrastructure is being inundated by tidally-driven groundwater in urban Honolulu.

The study has found that higher sea levels are pushing wastewater into storm drains and into coastal waters, with negative impacts to water quality and ecological health.

To investigate the impacts of future sea levels,  the team analyzed coastal ocean water and storm drain water in low-lying areas during spring tides. The researchers used chemical tracers to detect groundwater discharge and wastewater present at each site.

"Our results confirm that indeed, both groundwater inundation and wastewater discharge to the coast and storm drains are occurring today and that it is tidally-influenced," said study lead author Trista McKenzie. "While the results were predicted, I was surprised how prevalent the evidence for these processes and the scale of it."

During spring tides, storm drains can overflow. At the same time, wastewater from compromised infrastructure also discharges into storm drains in low-lying areas, according to the study. This contaminated water poses a risk to human health.

In addition, many of the human-derived contaminants were found at levels that pose a high risk to marine organisms. 

"Many people may think of sea-level rise as a future problem, but in fact, we are already seeing the effects today," said McKenzie. "Further, these threats to human health, ocean ecosystems and the wastewater infrastructure are expected to occur with even greater frequency and magnitude in the future."

"Coastal municipalities should pursue mitigation strategies that account for increased connectivity between wastewater infrastructure and recreational and drinking water resources."

"We need to consider infrastructure that minimizes flooding opportunities and contact with contaminated water; and decreases the number of contaminant sources, such as installation of one-way valves for storm drains, decommissioning cesspools, monitoring defective sewer lines, and construction of raised walkways and streets."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/23782242">Limnology and Oceanography Letters</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

In the 20th century, chemical companies developed thousands of herbicides. The most commonly used herbicide was glyphosate, which was introduced in 1974.



Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

NASA monitors giant dust storms on Mars

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Inhambane Bay in southeast Mozambique.&nbsp;



"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency </a>&nbsp;features the Kangerlussuaq Glacier, one of the largest tidewater outlet glaciers in Greenland. The glacier is located on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet.



As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

Ocean heat influences regional climate

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.
