Birdwatching was once a quiet, eccentric pastime. Now, it’s a worldwide phenomenon. Travelers go thousands of miles - even to remote places such as the Andes in Colombia - to catch a glimpse of one species. 



In the process, birdwatchers bond with the natural world, interact with fellow travelers, and spend money - lots of it. 



Now, birdwatching is one of the major engines of ecotourism, particularly in the tropics where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/all-birds-one-tree-complete-evolutionary-map-reveals-hidden-links/">bird</a> populations are rich and varied. But according to new research, not every country with rare birds is cashing in on this trend.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birdwatching-as-a-growing-business">Birdwatching as a growing business</h2>



Over the past decade, birdwatching has gone through the roof. Apps such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-may-solve-the-mystery-of-bird-movements/">eBird</a>, which allow users to record sightings, have made birdwatching a worldwide community. They receive millions of checklists from users who record what birds they have spotted and where.



The data is especially valuable for researchers trying to figure out how birdwatching tourism works - and where it’s growing.



A group of scientists from the <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/">University of California, Santa Cruz</a> decided to dig into this question. They analyzed eBird records for 155 nations from 2010 to 2022. 



The goal was to learn why birdwatching tourists are drawn to certain places and why others receive more visits than others.



The team started by determining which app users were likely tourists. If a user mostly posted bird sightings in one country but also submitted checklists from others, those other sightings were counted as tourism. 



Next, the researchers built models to analyze which factors were tied to rising tourist activity.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-birds-more-tourists">More birds, more tourists?</h2>



You’d think countries with the most birds would attract the most birders. That’s partly true - but it’s not the whole story.



The researchers looked at four main factors to understand what drives birdwatching tourism. First was the total number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hundreds-of-bird-species-face-extinction-risks-in-the-neotropics/">bird species</a> in a country. They also considered the number of small-range species - birds that are found only in a very specific area. 



Beyond <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/">biodiversity</a>, the team included the Human Development Index, which measures education, health, and income levels. Lastly, they factored in the Global Peace Index, which reflects a country’s overall safety and stability.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-influencing-bird-tourism">Factors influencing bird tourism </h2>



The analysis showed that the most important factor wasn’t birds - it was development. A country’s Human Development Index explained 41.4 percent of the variation in bird tourism. 



Species richness came in second at 22.4 percent. Small-range species mattered too, but not as much. Surprisingly, safety had only a minor influence - just 1.4 percent.



That means tourists care more about basic infrastructure and services than they do about peace rankings. They want to go somewhere that’s easy to travel in, not necessarily somewhere that’s totally safe on paper.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colombia-takes-the-lead">Colombia takes the lead</h2>



One of the biggest winners in the study was Colombia. Since 2010, birding activity in the country has grown 40 times over. 



The country also saw the biggest growth in tourist birdwatching, specifically. Colombia now holds a much bigger slice of the global birding pie than it did a decade ago.



South Africa ranked second in growth overall. Other countries, like Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru, also scored high in both visitation and biodiversity.



But some tropical countries, including Venezuela, Bolivia, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, barely saw any growth - even though they have incredible birds.



The gap is especially striking between Colombia and Venezuela. Both have rich bird life and similar development scores, but their tourism outcomes couldn’t be more different.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-working-and-what-isn-t">What’s working - and what isn’t</h2>



Part of Colombia’s success might come down to smart promotion. The country’s tourism agency launched a major campaign to boost birdwatching. 



Meanwhile, places like Costa Rica have spent years building infrastructure - trails, towers, trained guides - and focusing on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/travelers-are-ready-for-more-affordable-eco-friendly-options/">sustainable travel</a>. That kind of investment pays off.



On the other hand, some countries just haven’t built the conditions needed to welcome tourists, even if they have world-class birds. 



The study also suggests other factors might be in play: ease of getting visas, how affordable flights are, how a country is seen politically, and how well-connected it is to major tourist source countries like the U.S.



“Over the years, we’ve seen Colombia really explode as a birdwatching destination, and we often asked ourselves why more countries aren’t similarly recognized as great places for birdwatching,” said Scott Winton, a UC Santa Cruz ecologist and study coauthor.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birdwatching-as-a-business-opportunity">Birdwatching as a business opportunity</h2>



The researchers say there are ways to grow <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birdwatching-boosts-alaskas-economy-by-hundreds-of-millions/">birdwatching tourism</a> - especially for countries in the tropics with untapped potential.



One important takeaway: it’s not all or nothing. A nation doesn’t necessarily have to be completely developed or 100% secure to attract birders. What is more important is whether certain areas are perceived as safe, boast trained local guides, and provide minimal amenities.



To get there, governments can facilitate the growth of birding tourism by providing tax incentives or low-interest loans to facilitate the construction of birding trails, canopy towers, and viewing hides. 



Investing in guide training can also go a long way, particularly if locals are equipped with bird identification and customer service knowledge. Preserving bird habitats is important, as ecotourism relies on maintaining these areas intact. 



Furthermore, investing in small, community-based tourism enterprises with incentives for sustainable activities can help make birding tourism more accessible and inclusive.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birdwatching-biodiversity-and-income">Birdwatching, biodiversity, and income</h2>



Birdwatching isn’t a shortcut to success. It requires long-term thinking. Natural habitats take years to recover if they’re destroyed, but tourism built around nature can last for generations. Still, it’s not a decision governments should make alone.



“Just as I’ve seen birding tourism change people’s lives in my native Colombia, I hope other tropical countries can come together to conserve and showcase their amazing bird capital,” said Natalia Ocampo-Peñuela, the study’s lead author.



Ultimately, local and Indigenous communities should have the final say. When they lead, and when the land is protected, birdwatching can be more than a hobby - it can be a way to protect biodiversity and build lasting income in places that need it most.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pan3.70105">People and Nature</a>.

In the past, studies have failed to answer the question of what makes a person thrive rather than just simply survive. Research published in the journal <a href="http://www.europeanpsychologist.eu/">European Psychologist</a> reveals that thriving may be as simple as feeling good about yourself and what you are capable of. 

Dr. Daniel Brown, a sport and exercise scientist at the <a href="http://www.port.ac.uk/">University of Portsmouth</a>, set out to determine what makes people thrive at every stage of life across all cultures. For his investigation, he pulled together research on thriving that ranged from studies of babies and teenagers to studies on employees, artists, athletes, and the elderly.

"Thriving is a word most people would be glad to hear themselves described as, but which science hasn't really managed to consistently classify and describe until now,” said Dr. Brown. “It appears to come down to an individual experiencing a sense of development, of getting better at something, and succeeding at mastering something.”

The study produced two “shopping lists” of underlying conditions which are needed to thrive. Dr. Brown explained that all aspects of the lists are not required for thriving, but that a combination of components from both lists can be advantageous.

According to List A, a person who thrives is often optimistic, spiritual or religious, motivated, proactive, enjoys learning, flexible, adaptable, socially competent, and has self-esteem. List B points out what a thriving person has available to them, including opportunity, outside support, a manageable level of difficulties, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yoga-meditation-reverse-ill-health/">calm environment</a>, a high degree of autonomy, or a trusted level of competency.

"Since the end of the 20th century, there has been a quest in science to better understand human fulfilment and thriving, there's been a shift towards wanting to understand how humans can function as highly as possible," said Dr. Brown.

"Part of the reason for a lack of consensus is the research so far has been narrowly focused. Some have studied what makes babies thrive, others have examined what makes some employees thrive and others not, and so on. By setting out a clear definition, I hope this helps set a course for future research."

Dr. Brown conducted the research as part of his PhD studies at the <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/">University of Bath</a> with co-author Dr. Rachel Arnold, an expert in the psychology of performance excellence. The authors of the study have recommended six areas for future exploration, such as an analysis of what enables thriving.

Dr. Brown said that what basically constitutes thriving “is feeling good about life and yourself and being good at something.”

With the legalization of cannabis in Canada, the United States, and Uruguay, the future of international drug control treaties is now in doubt, as these changes are violate the treaties.

Professor Wayne Hall, who made world headlines after publishing a review of 20 years of cannabis research in 2014, published a paper in the scientific journal <a href="http://www.addictionjournal.org/">Addiction</a> that outline a cautious approach to policy reform. His suggestions revolve around trialing and evaluating the effects of incrementally more liberal drug policies is decriminalization is going to continue to expand.

The majority of member states of the United Nations endorse these international drug control treaties, which prohibit the non-medical use of cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. These treaties are designed to reduce illegal access to prohibited drugs while also facilitating access to these drugs for medical and research purposes.

However, critics have stated that these treaties have failed to effectively handle non-medical use of illegal drugs while also defending policies that conflict with UN human rights treaties through the incarceration of large numbers of drug users.

In his paper, Hall suggests policies that nations could adopt in order to address the harm that certain illegal drugs cause to users and others. This would include completely changing some treaties or allowing for “flexible interpretations” of treaty provisions by members of the UN.

Cannabis is the strongest candidate for national policy experiments on a variety of ways to regulate its sale and use. This is already occurring in the U.S., Uruguay, and Canada. Thorough evaluations of these experiments could be useful for other nations in how they may decide to legalize <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-treats-migraines-better/">cannabis</a> in the future.

For drugs such as ecstasy, LSD, and other psychoactive substances, the most imperative regulatory challenge would be ensuring that the manufacture and sale of these substances meet the standards of consumer safety, and that consumers are informed about the risks of using these drugs.

Hall suggests a mitigated form of prohibition for opioids, which would expand treatment for opioid dependence, reduce some of its serious medical complications, and reduce imprisonment of opioid users.

Unfortunately for cocaine and amphetamines, Hall doesn’t have any quick fixes. Policies for stimulants need to be improved to reduce the demand and offer more effective treatments for stimulant users. Prohibition may minimize their use, but it’s not sufficient, and regulation through a modified prescription system is unlikely to curtail harmful use.

When it comes to drugs and drug regulation, much of the world is changing. It makes sense the policies, both nationally and internationally, must adapt to change with it.

Ticks are major harbingers of diseases for humans and animals that spread Lyme disease and other sicknesses. Like all parasites, ticks are also an important part of the ecosystem, and balance is the key. But according to a new study, climate change affecting host animals could cause tick populations to soar with devastating consequences. 

The study was conducted by <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/">University of California, Santa Barbara</a> researchers and found that both tick populations and tick-borne diseases could increase in the coming years due to both climate change and decreasing wildlife populations

“Our research suggests that large mammal conservation may prevent increases in tick abundance and tick-borne disease risk. These results are timely and relevant in light of widespread wildlife declines and unpredictable regional climatic shifts in a steadily warming world,” said Georgia Titcomb, the study’s lead author and a graduate student from the UC Santa Barbara Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology. 

The researchers used a long term exclosure experiment to study how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protect-bees-managing-ticks/">tick</a> populations would fare in environments with differing herbivore animal numbers. Exclosure can refer to any area that is fenced in or isolated to avoid the entry of certain animals. 

The researchers isolated four different plots in the <a href="http://www.mpala.org/">Mpala Research Centre in Kenya</a> for their experiment. The first plot excluded most herbivores except rodents, the second plot allowed small and medium sized herbivores like hares, and the third excluded only giant herbivores like giraffes and elephants, the fourth was the control plot and had no exclusions. 

For a little over a year, the researchers monitored each plot and conducted monthly hour long tick drags. 

In the plots where there were fewer herbivores, there were more ticks. Some months even showed an increase of 360 percent in tick populations where all large wildlife were excluded from the area. 

Climate change continues to threaten habitats and animal populations, especially large herbivores who are necessary for keeping tick populations in check. And an increase in tick populations means an increase in tick borne pathogens. 

The study highlights the necessity of conservation efforts specifically targeted to hinder the effects of wildlife loss due to climate change.

A new study shows that children who were living or going to school near the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 are now at a greater risk of developing heart problems due to dust inhalation from collapse of the Twin Towers. 

A report published in the journal Environment International details a study conducted by<a href="http://nyulangone.org/"> New York University Langone</a> health researchers, who analyzed blood work from 308 children, 123 of whom were directly exposed to the toxic dust and debris from 9/11. 

The study gathered data from the 3,000 children enrolled in the <a href="http://www1.nyc.gov/site/911health/about/wtc-health-registry.page">World Trade Center Health Registry</a> (WTCHR) who were either living or going to school in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. WTCHR participants go through annual check-ups to help track mental and physical health as the years go on. 

Researchers found that the 123 children who inhaled dust from 9/11 were at risk for cardiovascular disease and had increased levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical used in manufacturing plastics that was released in the air as electronics burned in the collapse.  

The higher levels of PFOA indicated an increase in blood fats and artery-hardening fats like LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. According to the study, for every tripled increase of PFOA levels in the blood, there was a nine to fifteen percent increase in fats in the blood. 

These raised fat levels can cause heart attacks and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ways-keep-brain-healthy/">stroke</a> if not addressed. 

“Since 9/11, we have focused a lot of attention on the psychological and mental fallout from witnessing the tragedy, but only now are the potential physical consequences of being within the disaster zone itself becoming clear,” said Leonardo Trasande, MD, MPP, an associate professor at NYU School of Medicine and the study’s lead investigator. 

Luckily, as the warning signs of cardiovascular disease were caught early by the study and the children in the WTCHR are monitored yearly, the risks can be significantly decreased by exercise and healthy eating. 

Both the study and the WTCHR are important implements for monitoring the health of the children exposed to dust and debris from 9/11. 

“Our study emphasizes the importance of monitoring the health consequences from 9/11 in children exposed to the dust, and offers hope that early intervention can alleviate some of the dangers to health posed by the disaster,” said Trasande.

According to a new report from the <a href="http://www.heart.org/">American Heart Association</a>, a healthy lifestyle is reflected in your brain as much as it is in the rest of your body. A healthy lifestyle can lessen the risk of cognitive impairment, which limits healthy brain functions such as learning and remembering, communicating, making decisions, and solving problems.

As blood vessels become narrowed or blocked over the course of a person's life, the risk of atherosclerosis increases. This condition slowly and silently blocks the arteries and can prevent adequate blood flow to the brain and the heart, causing heart attacks and strokes. The experts published strategies to help avoid this and other diseases.

"Research summarized in the advisory convincingly demonstrates that the same risk factors that cause atherosclerosis, are also major contributors to late-life cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. By following seven simple steps - Life's Simple 7 - not only can we prevent heart attack and stroke, we may also be able to prevent cognitive impairment," said vascular neurologist Philip Gorelick, M.D., M.P.H.

Created by the American Heart Association, <a href="http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Conditions/My-Life-Check---Lifes-Simple-7_UCM_471453_Article.jsp">Life's Simple 7</a> highlights a set of health factors that define and promote cardiovascular wellness. The authors of the advisory reviewed 182 studies to produce a list of seven ways to achieve and maintain ideal brain health.

The program advises individuals to manage blood pressure, control cholesterol, keep blood sugar normal, get physically active, eat a healthy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/best-diet-longer-life/">diet</a>, lose extra weight, and quit smoking.

The report, which is published in the American Heart Association's journal <a href="http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/7624.php">Stroke</a>, urges people to take these steps to foster a healthy brain as early as possible, because atherosclerosis can begin as early as childhood. 

"Studies are ongoing to learn how heart-healthy strategies can impact brain health even early in life," said Gorelick. While further research is needed, he believes "the outlook is promising."

The action items included in Life's Simple 7 meet three practical rules agreed upon by the panel as they pinpointed ways to improve brain health. The experts wanted to include health factors which could be measured, modified and monitored, according to Gorelick, and which could be easily accessed by healthcare providers who will inform patients of how to meet these goals.

A special issue of <a href="http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/amp/">American Psychologist</a>, a journal from the <a href="http://www.apa.org/">American Psychological Association</a>, features a collection of articles which emphasize the health benefits of close relationships. The compilation of studies is an effort to convince scientists and psychologists to join forces and make it a priority to bring public awareness to the health advantages of close relationships.

The introduction to the special edition is written by editor Christine Dunkel Schetter, PhD. 

"The articles in this special issue represent state-of-the-art work on the central issues in the study of close relationships and health. They draw from relationship science and health psychology, two areas of scientific inquiry with independent histories and distinct domains," writes Schetter. "The goal of this special issue is to bridge the gap between these two specialties to improve the quality and usefulness of future research and practice."

The article "Advancing Social Connection as a Public Health Priority in the United States” provides scientific evidence that feeling socially connected and participating in high-quality relationships are linked to a decreased risk of mortality. Despite these facts, the authors say that government agencies, healthcare providers, and health care funders have not made social connection a public health priority. The experts point out that frequent and intense loneliness affects as many as 43 percent of adults in the U.S. over age 60.

Another report included in the special issue is "Interpersonal Mechanisms Linking Close Relationships to Health." This article gives insight into how interpersonal processes influence <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deportation-fears-american-children/">health</a> and disease. The authors say relationships can help protect against the negative effects of stress. Relationships can also foster positive emotions, personal growth and health-promoting behaviors.

Another article,"Childhood Close Family Relationships and Health," investigates how relationships early in life can affect one's health over the course of a lifetime. According to the authors, comforting relationships during childhood are linked to better physical health from infancy to adulthood. In addition, the impact of difficult health issues can be greatly reduced by close family relationships.

Other articles included in the special issue of the journal examine topics such as the increasingly complex biological pathways involved linking relationships to health. One article, for example, explains that a happy marriage can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, while a stressful relationship can increase this risk.

Dunkel Schetter says that the “challenge remains to translate existing and future knowledge into interventions to improve social relationships for the benefit of physical and mental health.”

Voter fraud and registration manipulation have been hot topics of concern on both sides of the aisle. But what happens when hackers use your identity to change your voting information?

A new <a href="http://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard</a> study has examined how hackers can access personal voter information, which can be bought online through both traditional resources the dark web. 

The researchers found that for a few thousand dollars, hackers could obtain enough data to change information where voters can register online, impersonate voters online, and target key demographics that would make <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weather-temperature-election-outcomes/">voting</a> difficult for certain people, districts, or communities. 

For example, a hacker armed with enough data could potentially change the addresses of a number of voters who, upon going to the polls to vote, would be told that he or she was in the wrong location, or that they would have to fill out a different ballot. 

The study was conducted by Latanya Sweeney, Harvard professor of Government and Technology in Residence, in collaboration with research analyst Ji Su Yoo and graduate student Jinyan Zang.

Together, the researchers examined how vulnerable the US voting system is to hackers. The study details multiple channels that hackers could use for buying and finding sensitive voter information.

Data sets with lists of personal information can be purchased or obtained fairly easily the researchers noted. Contrary to what one might think, voter information, including addresses, gender, and political party affiliation, is publically accessible. 

All in all, the researchers spent $18,000 obtaining voter information from the 35 states that allow online registration. The information did not include social security numbers or driver's license numbers, although those lists can be purchased from commercial data brokers and from the dark web.

Sweeney was able to purchase two sets of data containing the personal identity information of most adult Americans for just a little over $1,000. 

“The money, I think that's a real shocker. In Ohio, the data is free - you can download it from the Web. And others who have purchased the data have made it freely available in an attempt to add transparency to the election process. Even data brokers who specialize in voter lists, $2,000 was the maximum, and they covered all 50 states,” said Sweeney. 

Sweeney urged that the point of the study was not to emphasize the major flaws in the voting system or the security measures invested in by the states. Instead. Sweeney said the information should be used to help close any gaps and halt potential future voter identity theft.

Research from Australia and the Netherlands has revealed that listening to happy music affects creative cognition in a positive way. People may develop more unique ideas and innovative solutions while listening to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/like-songs-dislike-others/">music</a> compared to those working in silence.

The study was conducted by by Simone Ritter from <a href="http://www.ru.nl/english/">Radboud University</a> and Sam Ferguson from the <a href="https://www.uts.edu.au/">University of Technology Sydney</a>. The researchers enlisted the help of 155 individuals who completed questionnaires before being divided into groups. Each group was exposed to a different type of music that was classified as either calm, happy, sad, or anxious. In addition, a control group was not exposed to music. 

The volunteers attempted various cognitive tasks that tested their divergent and convergent creative thinking. Original and useful solutions to a task earned the participants a high score in divergent creativity, while those who came up with the best possible solution to a task earned a high score in convergent creativity.

The study showed that listening to happy music promotes divergent creative thinking. The researchers define happy music as classical music that has a positive emotional valence and is high in arousal. These variables which constitute happy music may enhance flexibility in thinking. This inspires solutions that may never have been conceived in silence, according to the authors.

The study, which is published today in the open-access journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>, shows that creative cognition is boosted by music. The authors suggest that music could provide an inexpensive way to inspire creativity in both school and work settings. Future research could explore how different ambient sounds affect creativity in a diverse range of people, including participants with varying levels of experience in music.

Cosmetic companies tout products that slow aging and provide a more youthful look, but no cosmetic can reverse the damaging effects of Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases related to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reverse-effecs-aging-brain/">age decline</a>. But now, new research from <a href="http://www.ucla.edu/">UCLA</a> scientists found a way to slow aging and extend the healthy lifespan of fruit flies. 

The key to the breakthrough was targeting mitochondria, the part of the cell in charge of growth and determining when the cell lives and dies. 

The study was conducted by Anil Rana, lead author and UCLA project scientist, and David Walker, senior author and UCLA Professor of Integrative Biology and Physiology.

As we age, damaged mitochondria build up in the brain, muscles, and other organs. The stored up mitochondria are the cause of many age related health problems. 

The researchers noticed that when fruit flies reach middle age, about a month into their typical two-month lifespan, their mitochondria starts to change shape, becoming thinner and more oblong. 

“We think the fact that the mitochondria become larger and elongated impairs the cell's ability to clear the damaged mitochondria, and our research suggests dysfunctional mitochondria accumulate with age, rather than being discarded,” said Walker. 

Walker and his colleagues removed the damaged mitochondria in fruit flies using two different methods, and both resulted in the fruit flies living longer with a healthier lifespan. 

For one method, the researchers increased Drp1 levels in the fruit flies. Drp1 is a protein vital to the aging process, and by increasing its levels, the researchers saw the long damaged mitochondria breaking up into smaller manageable pieces that were then discarded in the fruit flies. 

Breaking up damaged mitochondria gave the fruit flies more energy and endurance and increased their lifespans. 

In another method, researchers turned off a protein called Mfn, which stopped the damaged mitochondria from bonding together and turning into bigger pieces. This method also resulted in similar age slowing effects. 

“You can either break up the mitochondria with Drp1 or prevent them from fusing by inactivating Mfn. Both have the same effect: making the mitochondrial smaller and extending lifespan,” said Rana. 

Walker hopes this researcher can be extended to humans and effectively delay age related decline, halting the serious effects of age related diseases like Parkinson's, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

The <a href="http://www.nhs.uk/">National Health Service</a> recommends that adults should be getting between seven and eight hours of sleep every night, but in the real world what percentage of adults are actually doing this? A recent study has found that adults who get less than five hours of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/adhd-triggered-quality-sleep/">sleep</a> a night found it hard to function efficiently during the day. Inadequate sleep was revealed to lead to poor memory and increased risk of depression, stress, and anxiety.

The study was led by academic psychologists Anna Weighall and Ian Kellar of the <a href="http://www.leeds.ac.uk/">University of Leeds</a>. They analyzed data from a survey of sleeping habits encompassing over 1,000 adults from the UK. The study was conducted in collaboration with UK bed manufacturer, Silentnight. 

“A lot of previous sleep research has been based on lab studies - this is the first time we have surveyed people in their everyday lives,” says Weighall.

In their study, they looked at the relationship between quality and quantity of sleep, as well as the cognitive processes involving memory and recall. They also analyzed wider indicators of physical and mental wellbeing.

The results showed a significant relationship between poor sleep and reduced mental well-being. They also found a relationship between lack of sleep and increase in everyday memory problems. In participants that habitually slept less than five hours a night, these relationships were even stronger.

“There is now a very compelling case to say there is a strong relationship between getting a good night's sleep and experiencing better health, wellbeing and memory function,” says Weighall.

Kellar emphasizes that sleep needs to be treated as a public health priority; similar to how maintaining a healthy weight and eating a healthy diet are seen in the public eye. Scientists have known that sleep is necessary for laying down new memories and re-processing what is already “stored” in the brain.

These findings show that a significant portion of UK adults are sleep deprived, which could be a major public health issue. Weighall explains, “What is emerging is the debilitating impact of poor patterns of sleep. People who are not getting enough sleep are at risk of experiencing a much lower quality of life and it hinders their ability to function effectively when they are awake.”

According to the <a href="https://www.nimh.nih.gov/index.shtml">National Institute of Mental Health</a>, approximately 18 percent of US adults have some form of an anxiety disorder, and women are 60 percent more likely to develop an anxiety disorder than men.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems in the United States and can include Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and specific phobias. 

While anxiety disorders are treatable, and a wide a range of medications are prescribed to sufferers, science is finding more and more that in the long term, these treatments cannot be solely relied upon to relieve symptoms, and some can have unpleasant side-effects. 

Coping methods such as mindfulness, meditation, psychotherapy, exercise, and art therapy have been shown to be even more effective than medication in treating anxiety. 

A new study presented at the <a href="https://www.ecnp.eu/">European College of Neuropsychopharmacology</a> Conference shows how coping methods are crucial in treating anxiety disorders. Those who have a strong coping system in place were found to have a greater sense of self-worth and be less likely to exhibit anxiety symptoms.

Specifically, the study examines how coping methods can help women deal with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marijuana-low-doses-relieve-stress/">anxiety</a>, especially those in deprived communities or adverse situations. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>, led by Olivia Remes, surveyed 10,000 women over the age of 40 taking part in a wide reaching study. 

The researchers assessed the participants’ mental and physical health and used census data to determine deprived living conditions. The research team also measured each woman’s sense of fulfillment and meaning in their lives. 

Of the 10,000 women participating, almost 300 (2.6 percent) had Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The researchers found that in deprived communities, women without coping skills were nearly twice as likely to have anxiety than those who lived in wealthier areas. 

But the women who had solid coping methods weren’t nearly as affected by anxiety no matter their living conditions. 

“Individuals with this sense of coherence, with good coping skills, view life as comprehensible and meaningful. In other words, they feel they can manage their life, and that they are in control of their life, they believe challenges encountered in life are worthy of investment and effort, and they believe that life has meaning and purpose. These are skills which can be taught,” said Remes. 

The new research has exciting implications for mental health professionals and for people suffering from anxiety disorders. Finding and learning coping methods can prove, as Remes shows, a more powerful therapy than medication.

A recent study from the <a href="http://www.uef.fi/en">University of Eastern Finland</a> has found that men may have a more difficult time than women when trying to kick the habit of drinking. Long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heavy-drinking-affects-men/">drinking</a> causes changes in a region of the brain associated with addiction and alcohol cravings in men, but those changes were not detected in women.

“We found more changes in brain electrical activity in male subjects than in females, which was a surprise, as we expected it would be the other way around,” said researcher Dr. Outi Kaarre.

Previous studies by this research team had shown that heavy drinkers have increased electrical activity in the cortex region of the brain, which is responsible for decision-making. 

For the current study, the researchers monitored the brain activity of 11 men and 16 women under the age of 28 years old. The individuals had been consuming at least 25 units of alcohol per week over the course of a decade. One unit of alcohol is equivalent to a third of a pint of beer or half of a standard glass of wine.

The results of the study, which were reported to the <a href="https://www.ecnp.eu/">European College of Neuropsychopharmacology</a>, revealed that men have more of an electrical surge in a region of the brain linked to addiction. The experts also determined that “male brain electrical functioning is changed more than female brains by long-term alcohol use.”

“What this work means is that long-term alcohol use affects young men and women very differently, and we need to find out how these differences manifest themselves,” said Dr. Kaarre.

According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/">Center for Disease Control</a> (CDC), men are more likely than women to drink excessively. The CDC also states that men consistently have higher rates of alcohol-related deaths and hospitalizations than women.

This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>



Why does a 385-million-year-old forest matter today? It shows how dramatically forests can change Earth's climate. These ancient woodlands created the atmospheric conditions supporting complex life.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Economic impact</h2>



Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Tourism suffered as lakes became fishless and forests declined. EPA economic analyses from the period documented repair costs mounting into billions annually.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The solution: government action and technology</h2>



Transformation from crisis to success required unprecedented cooperation between governments, industries, and environmental groups.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Clean Air Act of 1990</h2>



The turning point came with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, signed by President George H.W. Bush. This represented a fundamentally new approach to environmental regulation, as documented in EPA historical records.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cap-and-trade success</h2>



Instead of mandating specific technologies, the 1990 amendments introduced something revolutionary: a cap-and-trade system for sulfur dioxide emissions. EPA program documentation shows this market-based approach set overall limits but allowed companies to trade emission allowances.



The genius was harnessing market forces to find cost-effective pollution reduction. Companies reducing emissions cheaply could sell excess allowances to those facing higher costs. Research published in environmental economics journals and EPA progress reports shows this resulted in dramatic SO2 reduction at a fraction of projected costs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Technology advances</h2>



Policy provided the framework, but technology made reductions possible. Studies in atmospheric science journals document the widespread adoption of flue gas desulfurization systems ("scrubbers") that removed sulfur dioxide before it reached the atmosphere. By the 2000s, new installations could remove over 95% of SO2 emissions, according to EPA technical reports.



The push coincided with cleaner energy development. Natural gas produces fewer sulfur compounds than coal. Wind and solar, emerging in the 1990s, captured growing market share, reducing reliance on high-sulfur coal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-we-don-t-hear-about-it-today">Why we don't hear about it today</h2>



Why did acid rain disappear from headlines? Simple: the problem was largely solved.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Success doesn't make news</h2>



There's an old journalism saying: "If it bleeds, it leads." Environmental success stories don't generate urgency like crisis reporting. Media attention shifted to other challenges: climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. There's only so much environmental anxiety the public can absorb, and newer concerns replaced acid rain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mission accomplished</h2>



The primary reason is beautifully simple: interventions worked. EPA monitoring data shows sulfur dioxide emissions dropped over 90% since 1990. Academic research published in environmental science journals confirms pH levels in formerly affected areas returned closer to normal. This represents one of history's most dramatic environmental recoveries. Studies by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation show fishless lakes now support healthy populations. Forests recovered, and building damage slowed dramatically.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-it-really-gone">Is it really gone?</h2>



The crisis is largely resolved, but monitoring data shows the problem isn't completely eliminated – it's managed to acceptable levels. Some areas still experience occasional events during high pollution periods. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
