Italy’s Campi Flegrei has been restless again when it comes to earthquakes, and a new AI approach is helping scientists see what the ground is really doing. 



In a peer-reviewed study, researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, along with colleagues at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano and the <a href="https://www.international.unina.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Naples Federico II</a>, reanalyzed continuous seismic records. The team found more than four times as many small earthquakes between January 21, 2022, and March 20, 2025.



The researchers did not detect any direct sign of magma moving upward. Instead, they highlighted very shallow hybrid quakes tied to the hydrothermal system.



That fuller picture matters because small events reveal where the crust is stressed and how energy is moving through the volcanic field. With cleaner detections and sharper locations, scientists can track changes faster and judge when activity starts to cluster in risky ways.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clear-signals-urgent-stakes">Clear signals, urgent stakes</h2>



“Seismicity could change at any time, and that may be the most important thing about this study: this capability of getting a clear view is now operational,” said study co-author Greg Beroza, a geophysics professor at Stanford University.



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-naples-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-signs-of-waking-up/">caldera</a> sits within the Neapolitan area, where more than half a million people live and work. That density means even modest shaking or ground movement can disrupt daily life, strain buildings, and complicate evacuations.



History shows why clarity is essential. During the 1982-1984 crisis, uplift and persistent earthquakes damaged structures across Pozzuoli. A major analysis documented that the events triggered the evacuation of about 40,000 people.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-turns-noise-into-earthquake-signals">AI turns noise into earthquake signals</h2>



The team trained a machine learning workflow on continuous waveforms and used it to scan years of data consistently. That created one catalog rather than a patchwork of methods, so patterns stand out instead of becoming blurred.



AI did more than count earthquakes. The workflow sharpened event locations and magnitudes, turning noisy curves into clean signals that line up with mapped features and known hot zones. 



That is the kind of precision emergency managers need when activity jumps in hours, not weeks. One payoff is a much clearer view of the caldera’s thin ring shaped structures and shallow faults. 



Those features organize the small quakes and help separate background rumble from changes that could matter for public safety.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcano-under-quiet-strain">Volcano under quiet strain</h2>



Campi Flegrei is a large caldera, the broad depression left by past eruptions, ringed by faults and dotted with old vents and fuming ground. It is not a single cone, it is a field where different parts can wake up at different times.



The region breathes over years through uplift and subsidence known as bradyseism. Those slow vertical motions have been recorded for centuries and often line up with swarms of small earthquakes.



In the new catalog, most activity sits at very shallow depths and traces a narrow ring fault system consistent with surface features and the zone now rising. 



The authors reported no direct signature of magma rising toward the surface in this interval. This lowers near-term eruption concern but does not remove the need for close watching.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faults-reveal-hidden-stress">Faults reveal hidden stress</h2>



Faults are breaks in rock that slip when stress overcomes strength, and their length and orientation constrain how big an earthquake could be. When small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-and-flood-zones-hidden-risks-in-the-pacific-northwest/">quakes</a> line up along a longer fault, planners can bound the upper size of plausible events rather than guess in the dark.



Seeing faults crisply also helps compare present unrest with past episodes. Shaking that migrates onto a new segment or clusters at the edge of the ring may signal a change in how the system stores and releases pressure.



Those signals are not predictions by themselves. They are inputs to models that weigh where stress is building, how close rocks are to failure, and what level of shaking the built environment can handle.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-refines-risk-planning">AI refines risk planning</h2>



Near real-time detections let observatories update maps of active zones as conditions evolve. That supports decisions like where to inspect bridges, how to stage ambulances, or when to test public alerts before a busy weekend.



Sharper locations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/">magnitudes</a> also help engineers validate expected shaking levels against what instruments record in town. With that feedback loop, officials can refine microzonation, revisit building priorities, and tune maintenance schedules before the next swarm.



Past experience is a warning here. During 1982-1984, the harbor shallowed and commerce paused, schools closed, and the government approved new housing to relocate residents. 



Planning for unrest is not only about eruptions, it is about everyday disruptions that stack up when the ground keeps moving.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-helps-not-predicts">AI helps, not predicts</h2>



The present results point to pressure within a shallow system, not direct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magma-layer-keeps-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-dormant/">magma</a> rise, during 2022-2025. That aligns with other independent work that has argued for pressure buildup and evolving stress in the crust during long stretches without eruption.



Unrest can still change quickly. More small quakes could organize into tighter clusters, or uplift rates could shift, and those changes would be visible fast with the new tools.



AI does not replace dense earthquake monitoring or local expertise. It helps analysts keep up when data surge, flag subtle changes that a human might miss after a long night, and focus attention on the signals that matter most.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adw9038" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

Long-term happiness in marriage could be genetic. A new study from researchers at <a href="https://publichealth.yale.edu/">Yale School of Public Health</a> reports that couples who share long-term happiness within marriage may have genes to thank for their longevity. Published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>, the study looks into a genetic variation that affects a social bonding hormone called oxytocin.

"This study shows that how we feel in our close relationships is influenced by more than just our shared experiences with our partners over time," said lead author Joan Monin, associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health. "In marriage, people are also influenced by their own and their partner's genetic predispositions."

Monin and her team studied 178 married couples ranging from 37 to 90 years old. Participants answered survey questions about their feelings of marital security and satisfaction. They also gave the team a saliva sample for genotyping purposes.

When at least one partner within a <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/couples-arguments-live-longer/">couple</a> had a genetic variation within their oxytocin receptor called the GG genotype, the couple as a whole reported greater marital satisfaction and security than those couples with different genotypes. This variation (OXTR rs53576) has been previously linked to personality traits like emotional stability, empathy, and sociability, however, before this study, its role within a marital relationship had not been examined.

Those with the GG genotype were also less anxiously attached to their spouse, meaning they did not exhibit insecure behaviors related to diminished self-worth, high rejection sensitivity, and approval-seeking behavior, as Monin explained.

Going forward, the team hopes to explore how other genotypes influence relationships as well as how OXTR rs53576 affects specific positive and negative experiences within a relationship to affect the quality of said relationship.

According to <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/2rs5yypwcn1d5en/EASAC_Forest_Bioenergy_Web-ready%20(2).pdf?dl=0">a new statement</a> released by the <a href="https://www.easac.eu/">European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC)</a>, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/carbon-capture-profitable-business/">CO2 removal technologies</a> and techniques are becoming more necessary to implement via climate policy due to the worldwide failure to reduce and reverse the growth of global emissions. 

However, the scientists say that mitigation must remain the highest priority, the EASAC notes. Relying on the future use of unproven technologies to fix the climate issue would be unwise, and, as the EASAC states, negative emissions technologies could not make up for the lack of effort to reduce CO2. They will simply help current emission statistics meet the targets of the Paris Agreement.

"As mitigation remains inadequate to keep warming within Paris Agreement Targets, applying negative emissions technologies at a potentially huge scale is increasingly likely to be necessary,” said Professor Michael Norton, Director of Environment at EASAC, which represents the national science academies of the EU Member States, Norway, and Switzerland. “Applying such technologies at the scale required would require the development of a new industry close to the same size as the current fossil fuel industry - a huge diversion of economic resources within the economy.”

“To avoid dangerous climate change and bolster its economy, therefore, the EU should be examining the most likely technologies to be relevant to Europe's future industries," Professor Norton continued.

The EASAC states that negative emission technologies (NETs), although important, have their downsides. Accepting such models could weaken resolve to mitigate and could cause bigger climate-related issues in the future. Therefore, NETs must be kept on the backburner and only be employed alongside mitigation.

Such negative emission technologies and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies include reversing deforestation, called “reforestation,” increasing soil carbon levels, and enhancing wetlands. This is perhaps the most cost-effective way to reduce carbon dioxide levels in both developed and developing countries.

Other CDR technologies include direct air capture with carbon storage (DACCS), and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) — however both must go through more testing before being identified as preferred technologies.

The EASAC also welcomes developments in carbon capture usage and storage (CCS). The council notes in its statement that “efforts should continue to develop CCS into a relevant and relatively inexpensive mitigation technology,” and that “maximising mitigation with such measures will reduce the future need to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.”

Furthermore, the EASAC also warns that those responsible for the transition from coal to imported biomass must take real climate change impacts over the next 10 to 20 years into consideration and provide a clear line between positive and negative use of bioenergy. And policy-makers should end subsidies for non-renewable biomass.

Why CO2 removal technologies are becoming more necessary

Every day in the United States, about 2.5 billion gallons of produced water – a  byproduct of oil refinery and extraction – is generated as waste. This water is deemed unusable for household and commercial use by the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a> due to the many remaining contaminants. And while several commercial treatments are available to clean this <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/groundwater-reserves-environmental-time-bomb/">water</a>, they can be expensive, energy-intensive, and do not remove all traces of contaminants from the water.

But in what could be a major development for the oil refinery industry, <a href="https://www.purdue.edu/">Purdue University</a> researchers have now developed a process that removes almost all traces of oil in produced water. Their process involves using activated charcoal foam, which absorbs contaminants from the water, and subjecting the water to solar light in order to produce heat and purify the water.

This process has met all EPA standards for clean water from industrial sources, and tests have shown it to produce a total organic carbon of only 7.5 milligrams per liter. Furthermore, the researchers state that the oil absorbed by the foam can be recovered, as they were able to recover up to 95 percent of the oil that was absorbed.

“This is a simple, clean and inexpensive treatment process,” said Ashreet Mishra, a graduate research assistant at the Purdue University Northwest Water Institute. “I have seen in my home country of India how people suffer for the want of pure water, and we as researchers need to do as much as we can to help.”

Mishra also says that the Purdue process could be integrated with existing disposal systems to purify a large amount of water and reduce the current stress on water grids. “This is the first-of-its kind method to do this purification in a single step simultaneously via a perforated foam,” she says. “Our process is able to address the cost and energy aspects of the problem.”

Researchers are now working with the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization to patent this innovation, and they are looking for partners to assist in its continued development.

According to researchers at the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a>, social communication played an influential role in how the human face shape evolved. Because <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/humans-hunted-6th-extinction/">humans</a>, short-faced, and large-brained, look so different from our closest relatives, the researchers concluded that Homo sapiens most likely developed non-verbal communications and gestures in order to survive.

"We can now use our faces to signal more than 20 different categories of emotion via the contraction or relaxation of muscles", said Paul O'Higgins, Professor of Anatomy at the <a href="https://www.hyms.ac.uk/">Hull York Medical School</a> and the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. "It's unlikely that our early human ancestors had the same facial dexterity as the overall shape of the face and the positions of the muscles were different."

The human face should be seen as the result of biomechanical, physiological, and social influences, the research team stated in their study, published April 15th in <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol/">Nature Ecology and Evolution</a>. Climate and diet also contributed to the formation of the humans face, but the need for non-verbal communication helped shape our modern brow — smooth and capable of a wide range of movement. And human faces became slimmer, allowing us to express subtle emotions like sympathy and recognition.

Furthermore, human faces are still evolving. Over the past 100,000 years, our faces have become smaller as we developed cooking skills, therefore helping us process food more efficiently and chew less. This shift marks our transition from being hunter-gatherers to agriculturalists and city-dwellers.

"We know that other factors such as diet, respiratory physiology and climate have contributed to the shape of the modern human face, but to interpret its evolution solely in terms of these factors would be an oversimplification," Professor O'Higgins said. He continued, "Softer modern diets and industrialised societies may mean that the human face continues to decrease in size. There are limits on how much the human face can change however, for example breathing requires a sufficiently large nasal cavity."

O’Higgins concludes, "However, within these limits, the evolution of the human face is likely to continue as long as our species survives, migrates and encounters new environmental, social and cultural conditions."

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/">University of British Columbia</a> (UBC) have discovered that honey samples can be used to measure environmental pollution. When <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/honeybees-solving-basic-math-problems/">bees</a> hunt for pollen and nectar near their hives, they pick up trace amounts of elements such as lead. As a result, these elements can be detected in the honey produced by the bees. 

Scientists at the UBC's Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research (PCIGR) analyzed honey samples from six Metro Vancouver neighborhoods, testing for lead, zinc, copper, and other elements. In addition, the team used lead isotope analyses to pinpoint where the lead originally came from. 

“The good news is that the chemical composition of honey in Vancouver reflects its environment and is extremely clean,” said study lead author Kate E. Smith, who is a PhD candidate at PCIGR. “We also found that the concentration of elements increased the closer you got to downtown Vancouver, and by fingerprinting the lead we can tell it largely comes from manmade sources.”

The experts found that the honey collected in Metro Vancouver was well below the worldwide average for heavy metals like lead. For example, an adult would have to consume more than two cups of honey every day to exceed safe lead levels. 

The study also revealed that the concentration of lead increased in areas with heavy traffic and industrial activity, while levels of manganese appeared to increase near areas with more agricultural activity and pesticide use. 

The isotope analysis showed that the lead could not be traced to any local, naturally-occurring sources. 

“We found they both had fingerprints similar to aerosols, ores and coals from large Asian cities,” said study senior author Dominique Weis. “Given that more than 70 per cent of cargo ships entering the Port of Vancouver originate from Asian ports, it's possible they are one source contributing to elevated lead levels in downtown Vancouver.”

The research was carried out in partnership with Hives for Humanity, which is a local non-profit that creates urban beekeeping job opportunities for people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

“One of the exciting parts of this study is that it bridges science with community interests,” said Smith. “Honey sampling can easily be performed by citizen scientists in other urban centres, even if they lack other environmental monitoring capabilities.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natsustain">Nature Sustainability</a>.

Honey from city bees can be used to trace environmental pollutants

Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have discovered...

Thanks to machine learning, computers are able to spot the risk signs of an impending heart attack or death – and more accurately than human doctors.

Researchers used machine learning to analyze the records of 950 patients who reported chest pain, and who had known six-year treatment outcomes. They taught the computer to look at 85 different variables and analyze the data, including scans that looked at coronary plaque, narrowing blood vessels and calcification. Additional tests, smoker status, age, biological sex and diabetes were among the dozens of other factors analyzed.

They found that the algorithm could identify patterns in the variables and predict heart attacks and death with an accuracy rate passing 90 percent.

"These advances are far beyond what has been done in medicine, where we need to be cautious about how we evaluate risk and outcomes,” study author Dr. Luis Eduardo Juarez-Orozco of the <a href="http://turkupetcentre.fi/">Turku PET Centre</a> said in a press release. “We have the data but we are not using it to its full potential yet."

Most doctors use risk scores that look at a handful of factors to determine if patients are at risk of a heart attack or other cardiac incident. But those scores look at far fewer than 85 variables – and they’re much less accurate than the new computer model.

“Humans have a very hard time thinking further than three dimensions (a cube) or four dimensions (a cube through time). The moment we jump into the fifth dimension we're lost,” Juarez-Orozco said. “Our study shows that very high dimensional patterns are more useful than single dimensional patterns to predict outcomes in individuals and for that we need machine learning."

Machine learning has led to major technological advances in the past few years. Computers are being programmed to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-threatened-species/">identify threatened species</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-debunk-fake-news/">debunk fake news</a>. It’s used by streaming video sites and online retailers to predict what shows or products customers might enjoy. Smartphones use it for facial recognition.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.salk.edu/">Salk Institute</a> even found that artificial intelligence is good at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/machine-learning-predict-healthy-aging/">predicting healthy aging</a>. However, machine learning is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientific-discoveries-machine-learning/">not yet always reliable</a>.

Still, the study shows great promise. 

"Doctors already collect a lot of information about patients – for example those with chest pain. We found that machine learning can integrate these data and accurately predict individual risk. This should allow us to personalize treatment and ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients," Juarez-Orozco said. 

The researchers’ findings will be presented at the <a href="https://www.escardio.org/Congresses-&amp;-Events/ICNC">International Conference on Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT</a>. New carbon sequestration method will turn CO2 into solid rock. An international team of researchers and engineers working with Iceland's <a href="https://www.carbfix.com/">CarbFix</a> project has devised a new method of carbon sequestration that turns dissolved carbon dioxide into solid rock. 

The technology mimics the natural process of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/air-conditioners-capture-carbon/">carbon</a> being absorbed by basalt rock, which usually takes place over thousands of years. 

“With this method we have actually changed the time scale dramatically,” said geologist Sandra Osk Snaebjornsdottir.

The technique, which has been developed in a collaboration among experts from utility company Reykjavik Energy, the University of Iceland, France's National Centre for Scientific Research, and Columbia University, dissolves CO2 into a type of “fizzy water.”

The method uses steam to capture CO2 and convert into condensate, or a liquid formed by condensation. “Basically we are just making soda water out of the CO2,” explained project director Edda Sif Aradottir. 

The liquid substance is then transported through pipes to a site several miles away. Under high pressure, it is injected into basalt rocks that are 3,300 feet beneath the ground in Iceland.

When the liquid makes contact with the calcium, magnesium, and iron in the basalt, it begins to mineralize. “Almost all of the injected CO2 was mineralized within two years in our pilot injection,” said Snaebjornsdottir.  

The researchers conducted their experiments in the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, where the method has effectively reduced CO2 emissions by one-third. This is the equivalent of 12,000 tons of CO2 that was intercepted using the technology. 

Despite its success in Iceland, the experts noted that the technique may not as be feasible in other regions. For each ton of CO2 injected and solidified, the method requires 25 tons of desalinated water. 

“I agree that the process uses a lot of water, but we gain a lot by permanently getting rid of CO2 that otherwise would be floating around the atmosphere,” said Aradottir. 

The CarbFix team is currently working to facilitate the widespread application of their method. The researchers believe this secure and environmentally friendly approach to reducing atmospheric CO2 levels will prove to be an important solution for fighting climate change.

50 million years ago, the Arctic was very different from the Arctic we know today. Geological records show that during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-emissions-56-million-years/">Eocene</a>, the North Pole was inhabited by crocodiles and resembled a palm tree covered landscape similar to Florida. 

Researchers have long wondered what could have caused such a drastic spike in global warming. But now, a new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="http://www.caltech.edu/">California Institute of Technology</a> may have solved a piece of the riddle. 

The new modeling study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, emphasizes an overlooked consequence of atmospheric carbon dioxide and shows that if CO2 concentrations reach a certain point, marine stratus clouds could disappear. 

Without marine stratus clouds, the Earth would experience a spike in warming as those clouds help cool the Earth and reflect sunlight. 

The researchers found that if CO2 concentrations rise above 1,200 parts per million, marine stratus clouds will become unstable, disappear, and global temperatures could increase by 14 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Currently, atmospheric CO2 levels measure around 410 parts per million, but CO2 levels could reach the 1,200 parts per million threshold (a rough estimate) in the next century if emissions continue to rise. 

“I think and hope that technological changes will slow carbon emissions so that we do not actually reach such high CO2 concentrations. But our results show that there are dangerous climate change thresholds that we had been unaware of,” Tapio Schneider, the lead author of the study. 

Marine stratus clouds cover 20 percent of the subtropical oceans and help keep coastal areas cool. 

While marine stratus clouds are a key part of regulating surface temperature, the air currents that sustain the clouds are impossible to model on a global scale because of their small size. 

The researchers found a way to bridge this hurdle in climate modeling by developing a small-scale model to mimic the atmosphere above a subtropical ocean. 

The model simulates clouds and turbulent air motion using supercomputers and the researchers found that when CO2 levels reached a certain point (exceeding 1,200 parts per million), the cloud decks covering the ocean became unstable and disappeared. 

Furthermore, the model projected that the stratus clouds would not reappear until CO2 levels were lower than what they had been before the clouds destabilized. 

Disappearing marine stratus clouds could explain what caused the Eocene’s spike in temperature, as previous models showed that CO2 concentrations would have had to more than double to create such a warm climate. 

This study now adds an important element to consider future climate projections and makes modeling stratus cloud instability possible. 

“This research points to a blind spot in climate modeling,” said Schneider. 

Schneider is currently working to build a new climate model that incorporates cloud cover and small-scale features to future climate projections.

Artificial intelligence can diagnose diseases with impressive accuracy. A team of researchers has investigated the potential for <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-earth-data/">artificial intelligence</a> (AI) to detect diseases in medical images as well as humans can. After conducting the first systematic review of published studies related to this topic, the experts found that humans and machines have similar levels of accuracy.

The researchers explained that medical imaging is one of the most valuable sources of diagnostic information, but the need for diagnostic images is outpacing the capacity of available specialists, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.Artificial intelligence can diagnose diseases with impressive accuracy

"Deep learning offers considerable promise for medical diagnostics," wrote the study authors. "We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of deep learning algorithms versus health-care professionals in classifying diseases using medical imaging."

Out of more than 20,000 studies of applications using AI for medical imaging, the team found that only 14 produced good quality data. Collectively, these 14 studies suggest that deep learning systems correctly detect a disease 87 percent of the time, while healthcare professionals are accurate 86 percent of the time.

Study co-author Professor Alastair Denniston is an eye specialist at the <a href="https://www.uhb.nhs.uk/home.htm">University Hospitals Birmingham</a>. He explained that while the results are encouraging, the study is a reality check for some of the hype about AI.

“There are a lot of headlines about AI outperforming humans, but our message is that it can at best be equivalent,” said study lead author Dr Xiaoxuan Liu.

The experts noted that there were few high-quality studies that involved a direct comparison or evaluated the performance of AI in a real clinic setting, which could significantly change the results of the meta-analysis. Because of these limitations, the researchers said the true diagnostic power of AI “remains uncertain.”

Professor Paul Leeson is a professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, who was not involved with the study. 

"This paper summarizes the current state of research testing how well artificial intelligence identifies disease in a medical image compared to a clinician. The review has been performed very carefully but real challenges were encountered trying to get a useful result," said Professor Leeson. 

"The authors had to lump together findings from completely different medical problems and types of imaging, including research performed at a very early stage in the development." 

"Importantly the work highlights a new phase of research is needed, using more detailed trials, to work out the best ways to use artificial intelligence in healthcare."

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/digital-health">Lancet Digital Health</a>.

For some time, biologists have known that some migratory animals, from birds to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migrating-turtles-magnetic-field/">sea turtles</a>, are able to sense Earth’s magnetic fields. Now, a new study has found that humans can also sense changes in those fields.

A team of geoscientists and neurobiologists from the <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/">California Institute of Technology</a> and the <a href="https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/index.html">University of Tokyo</a> set out to determine whether humans have a sense known as magnetoreception.

“Magnetoreception, the perception of the geomagnetic field, is a sensory modality well-established across all major groups of vertebrates and some invertebrates, but its presence in humans has been tested rarely, yielding inconclusive results,” the researchers wrote. 

Led by geoscientist Dr. Joseph Kirschvink and neuroscientist Dr. Shin Shimojo, the team used electroencephalography, or EEG, to record participants’ brain wave patterns as they manipulated magnetic fields.

The controlled experiments recorded a decrease in alpha-band activity in some of the study’s participants. Such a decrease is a common response to sensory input, the scientists said.

“We report here a strong, specific human brain response to ecologically-relevant rotations of Earth-strength magnetic fields,” the researchers wrote.

The study was especially tuned for the Northern Hemisphere, where the research was conducted. The researchers hope to keep studying how different human populations react to changes in Earth’s magnetic fields to gain more information about this extra “sense.”

“Given the known presence of highly-evolved geomagnetic navigation systems in species across the animal kingdom, it is perhaps not surprising that we might retain at least some functioning neural components, especially given the nomadic hunter/gatherer lifestyle of our not-too-distant ancestors,” the team wrote in their study. “The full extent of this inheritance remains to be discovered.”

The study has been published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1523/ENEURO.0483-18.2019">eNeuro</a>. A new study from the <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/">Pew Research Center</a> has found that, when it comes to what Americans know and understand about science, there are vast differences. A survey of 4,464 adults revealed that just about 39 percent of American adults have a high level of science knowledge, while 29 percent have little knowledge of scientific facts. 

“In an era of easy access to a wide array of information, along with sometimes-intense debate over what information is true and false, this survey takes stock of the degree to which the public shares a common understanding of science facts and processes,” said Cary Funk, who is the director of science and society research at the Pew Research Center.


Of the 11 multiple-choice questions included in the survey, participants with a postgraduate degree answered an average of four more questions correctly compared to participants with a high school degree or less. Overall, 71 percent of those with a higher education were classified as having the most science knowledge, while only 19 percent of those with a high school degree were able to perform as well. 

There were also some gender differences found in the scores, but these discrepancies were not consistent across questions. For example, men and women were about equally likely to identify that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistance-wastewater/">antibiotic resistance</a> is a major concern related to overuse of these drugs. However, about 20 percent more men were aware that inserting a gene into a plant is an example of genetic engineering.

Republicans and Democrats were found to have similar levels of science knowledge. Study participants who leaned toward the Republican Party averaged seven correct answers, while those who leaned toward the Democratic Party got an average of 6.6 survey questions correct.

The findings are based on a nationally representative survey conducted in January of 2019, involving adults 18 years of age or older across the United States.

Research reveals vast differences in what Americans know about science....

Artificial intelligence can be used to detect risk of premature death. Preventative healthcare is a growing field, bolstered by the drive for physicians to help stamp out health issues before they arise. 

“Preventative healthcare is a growing priority in the fight against serious diseases,” says Dr. Stephen Wang, an assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Data Science at the <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/">University of Nottingham</a>. He is also the lead researcher on a new study published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a> detailing the development and testing of a system of computer-based ‘machine learning’ algorithms, which could be used to predict risk of early death due to chronic disease in a large middle-aged population.

“We have been working for a number of years to improve the accuracy of computerized health risk assessment in the general population,” explains Dr. Wang. In this study, the research team used health data from over half a million people aged between 40 and 69 who were recruited to the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010, and followed up in 2016. 

The AI machine learning models used in the study are known as “random forest” and “deep learning.” They were tested against the traditionally used “Cox regression” prediction model based on age and gender and a multivariate Cox model – both of which are known to have issues with accuracy in predicting <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/human-mortality-slow-down/">mortality</a>.

The computer models tested in the study take into account a range of demographic, biometric, clinical, and lifestyle factors for every individual they assess. 

“We mapped the resulting predictions to mortality data from the cohort, using Office of National Statistics death records, the UK cancer registry and ‘hospital episodes’ statistics,” explains Wang. “We found machine learned algorithms were significantly more accurate in predicting death than the standard prediction models developed by a human expert.”

Interest in the potential of AI or machine-learning in healthcare has risen over the years as new developments have been made. “These techniques can be new to many in health research, and difficult to follow,” says Professor Joe Kai, one of the clinical academics working on the study. “We believe that by clearly reporting these methods in a transparent way, this could help with scientific verification and future development of this exciting field for health care.”

The researchers believe that AI will be a pivotal tool in the development of future technologies that can deliver personalized medicine to individual patients. While further research is needed to validate these new systems, it’s quite possible that machine learning and AI may one day be central to our health.

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
