After nearly four decades of stubbornly clinging to life, one of the largest icebergs ever recorded is entering its final act. A23a - the trillion-ton "megaberg," which once sprawled over an area more than twice the size of Greater London - has drifted into the warmer waters of the South Atlantic and has begun to disintegrate rapidly.



In recent weeks, satellite images show vast slabs calving away - some measuring hundreds of square miles - while a blizzard of smaller bergy bits spreads around it, posing hazards to ships as the giant wastes away.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iceberg-freed-after-30-years">Iceberg freed after 30 years</h2>



A23a’s story stretches back to 1986, when it calved from Antarctica’s Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and promptly ran aground in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-is-sea-ice-loss-affecting-biodiversity-in-the-weddell-sea/">Weddell Sea</a>, pinned to the seafloor for more than 30 years.



Freed at last in 2020, it joined “iceberg alley,” the conveyor belt of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-circumpolar-current-speed-increasing-rising-sea-levels/">Antarctic Circumpolar Current</a> that sweeps big bergs toward the South Atlantic.



By early 2025, it had loomed into view near South Georgia, raising fears it could block the island’s penguins and seals from their feeding grounds. The berg briefly grounded on shallow banks, then worked loose in late May and accelerated north.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-seas-speed-its-demise">Warming seas speed its demise</h2>



Heat and waves are now doing what gravity and time could not. According to an analysis of Copernicus satellite data, megaberg A23a is down to roughly 683 square miles, with a maximum width of about 37 miles - less than half its size at the start of the year. 



Its drift speed has jumped too, at times topping 12 miles per day as it rides stronger currents and increasingly rough seas.



“It’s breaking up fairly dramatically,” said Andrew Meijers, a physical oceanographer at the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Antarctic Survey</a> (BAS). “I’d say it’s very much on its way out - it’s basically rotting underneath." 



"The water is way too warm for it to maintain. It’s constantly melting…It won’t be really identifiable within a few weeks.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-made-megaberg-a23a-so-unusual">What made megaberg A23a so unusual</h2>



Iceberg calving is part of the normal life cycle of polar ice, and giant bergs are not unprecedented. But A23a’s persistence and path are striking.



“Most icebergs don’t make it this far,” Meijers said. “This one’s really big, so it has lasted longer and traveled farther than others.”



When BAS researchers sailed alongside it in late 2023 aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough, the experience was otherworldly.



“It looked like a towering wall emerging from the ocean, stretching from horizon to horizon,” Meijers said. “Some portions were quite pitted and undercut by the action of waves and melt.”



That undercutting is the giveaway. As the berg moves into warmer, saltier water and meets heavier swell, melting hollows its base while cracks propagate through the plate-like ice. Running aground - whether at South Georgia or now on patches of the continental shelf - adds extra stress that hastens the breakup.



“Large bergs have made it a long way north before - one got within 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of Perth, Australia - but they all inevitably break up and melt quickly afterward,” Meijers said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-danger-and-opportunity-collide">Danger and opportunity collide</h2>



Icebergs of this size can reshape local ecosystems as they pass. They can temporarily block straightforward routes from island rookeries to offshore feeding grounds, forcing adult <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/penguins-are-threatened-by-mercury-contamination/">penguins</a> and seals to detour and burn energy while chicks and pups wait ashore.



“Potentially, it could interrupt their pathway to feeding sites and force the adults to expend more energy to travel around it,” Meijers said of the South Georgia colonies, which is why the grounding in March drew concern. The berg’s drift around the island reduced that immediate risk.



There may also be benefits. As megabergs like A23a melt, they stir stratified waters and leak micronutrients such as iron into the sunlit surface layer - fertilizer for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-from-africa-sparked-a-massive-phytoplankton-bloom/">phytoplankton blooms</a> that can feed krill and fish, and ultimately seabirds and mammals.



BAS researchers sampled waters around A23a in December 2023 to gauge its biogeochemical “footprint.” They paired these results with past deployments of robotic ocean gliders around similar bergs. 



Together, the data show how iceberg-borne nutrients and upwelling can boost productivity and even enhance carbon sequestration as organic matter sinks to depth.

A23a’s decay has unfolded in near-real time thanks to daily satellite imagery, which captures both its changing outline and the swarms of fragments it sheds.



“It is easily observed from space, and daily visual-spectrum satellite snapshots make it easy to track its progress,” Meijers said. 



Ocean current maps - also derived from satellites - help project its likely path, though the precise route always depends on winds, waves, and where the berg next snags the seafloor.



For shipping, vigilance is everything. A single monster is easy to avoid; a broken field of smaller floes is not. “As it breaks up over time, the smaller bergs are much harder to track,” Meijers said. Fishing operators may temporarily write off entire regions until the ice debris disperses.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-icebergs-in-a-warming-world">Icebergs in a warming world</h2>



Scientists are careful to distinguish between calving - a natural release valve for ice shelves - and the broader, climate-driven changes transforming Antarctica.



“Icebergs, including megabergs like this one, are a completely normal part of the lifecycle of the Antarctic (and Greenland) ice sheets,” Meijers said. But the context has shifted.



“Observations show that the ice shelves have lost around 6,000 giga (billion) tons of their mass since the year 2000.” 



It is a loss “roughly matched by an increase in straight-up melt of the ice shelves” and aligned with measured mass loss from grounded Antarctic ice.



That matters for global sea level - because thinning shelves buttress <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-are-reshaping-landscapes-and-national-borders-around-the-world/">glaciers</a> less effectively - and for ocean circulation, as freshwater input alters density and flow. Scientists are especially concerned about potential “tipping points” in West Antarctica, where retreat could become self-sustaining.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-final-days-of-a-giant">Final days of a giant</h2>



No one can say exactly how A23a’s last weeks will play out, only that the megaberg's direction is one-way. Grounding events, wave attacks, and heat from above and below guarantee a cascade of fractures until the berg is a memory and a field of bergy bits.



“Now it’s grounded, it is even more likely to break up due to the increased stresses,” Meijers noted earlier; whether or not it’s currently snagged, the outcome is the same.



For scientists, though, this isn’t just spectacle. It’s a chance to watch, measure, and model how a true giant interacts with the Southern Ocean - how it fertilizes, how it freshens, how it fragments - and to fold those insights into a bigger picture of a warming world.



As Meijers put it, icebergs provide interesting natural laboratories for studying ocean physics, chemistry, and ecosystems. A23a’s long journey is nearly over. The lessons it leaves behind won’t melt away.

Antarctica’s megaberg faces its final days in the South Atlantic

Inventory of plant defense tools is a major step toward disease-resistant crops. An international team of researchers has taken an inventory of the monitoring tools that are used by plants to detect harmful microbes. This catalog represents a major step forward in understanding plant biology and has important implications for the improved management of dangerous <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/global-surveillance-system-crop-diseases/">crop diseases</a>. 

Just like animals, plants depend on their immune systems for protection against pathogenic microbes such as bacteria and fungi. Proteins called Nucleotide-binding Leucine-rich Repeat receptors (NLRs) coordinate efforts to detect the ever-changing variety of microbes present in the plant's environment.

The team set out to identify the full spectrum of NLRs produced by plants and to investigate how much these receptors vary within a typical plant species. The study was focused on Arabidopsis plants, which come under attack by pathogenic organisms of all types.

In the lab of Detlef Weigel at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, the experts used advanced sequencing technologies to analyze the genetic diversity of NLRs in plants sampled from Europe, North America, and Asia. 

As expected, the collections of these receptors varied among geographic regions, likely due to their evolutionary response to local pathogens. The team was surprised to find that there is an upper limit on NLR gene numbers across the species.

"While the diversity is perhaps more limited than anticipated, it is the mixing of genes that makes each individual uniquely resistant to a different spectrum of pathogens," explained Weigel.

According to Jonathan Jones at <a href="http://www.tsl.ac.uk/">The Sainsbury Laboratory</a>, the study will change the way researchers approach the subject in future.

"One of the remarkable conclusions that emerge from this study is that so many populations need to be sequenced to define the full immune system repertoire of any plant," said Jones. "Gone are the days when a single reference sequence is sufficient to reveal the secrets of a species; it is now clear that we need to understand the genetic diversity of a species in order to understand its immune system."

The research has the potential to transform our understanding of agriculture and plant evolution. 

"This work will help drive new NLR receptor function discovery for developing disease-resistant crops and also guide the analysis of their evolution across the plant kingdom," said Jeffery Dangl of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Coordination and support for the study was provided by the 2Blades Foundation, an international organization dedicated to understanding plant disease and advancing crop disease resistance. The research was funded in part by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/">Cell</a>.

A new study from the <a href="https://en.natmus.dk/">National Museum of Denmark</a> shows that migration patterns shifted during the southern Scandinavian <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/foxes-domesticated-bronze-age/">Bronze Age</a>, which took place in modern-day Denmark during the 2nd millennium B.C. Evidence shows that migrants of varied backgrounds traveled from distant lands to take part in the economic growth happening in the Nordic region.

During the 2nd and 3rd millennia B.C., many significant migrations to western Europe took place, and only increased after southern Scandinavia became the hub for long-distance metal trade throughout Europe, which started at around 1600 B.C. By the later millennia, the Nordic Bronze Age peaked and wealth and migrants flooded into the area.

"Around 1600 BC, the amount of metal coming into southern Scandinavia increased dramatically, arriving mostly from the Italian Alps, whereas tin came from Cornwall in south England,” said co-author Kristian Kristiansen. “Our results support the development of highly international trade, a forerunner for the Viking Age period."

The Museum’s Karin Frei, Kristiansen, and colleagues examined ancient skeletal remains of 88 people from 37 localities across modern Denmark to investigate the migratory pattern shifts during the Bronze Age. Using strontium isotopes found in tooth enamel, which record geographic signatures, Frei and the team were able to identify where individuals originally hailed from.

Beginning at around 1600 B.C., and spanning into the Nordic Bronze Age, the geographic signal of migrants became more diverse. The authors suggest, via their study published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0219850">PLOS ONE</a>, that this migratory shift could have established new cultural alliances within southern Scandinavia, however, more research into ancient DNA could provide insight into this theory.

"Our data indicates a clear shift in human mobility at the breakthrough point of the Nordic Bronze Age, when an unprecedented rich period in southern Scandinavia emerged,” Frei said. “This suggests to us that these aspects might have been closely related."

Wide variety of migrants traveled to Denmark during the Nordic Bronze Age

A new study from the National Museum of Denmark shows...

Cranial modification may have been used as a way to show cultural affiliation during the 5th and 6th centuries in Croatia, a time when humans were moving across Europe in the Great Migration Period.

Artificial Cranial Deformation (ACD) has been practiced across multiple cultures and countries through the ages. 

Archaeologists have uncovered modified skulls in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-people-elongated-skulls/">China</a> dating back 5,000 to 12,000 years, and an ancient burial site in Mexico containing bones that dated to 945 A.D. to 1308 A.D. made headlines with the <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/12/alien-looking-human-skulls-found-in-mexico/">“alien-like” skulls discovered there</a>. 

In a new study, researchers from the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/">University of Vienna</a> and the <a href="https://inantro.hr/en/homepage-eng/">Institute for Anthropological Research in Croatia</a> examined skeletons that were excavated from the Hermanov vinograd archaeological site in Osijek, Croatia in 2013. 

Three human skeletons were discovered in a pit dating to 415 to 560 CE, and two of the skeletons had modified skulls. One of the skulls had been elongated, and another had been compressed and heightened.

The researchers used genetic, isotopic, and skeletal analysis to study the bones. All three skeletons were male, aged between 12 and 16 years old. The two with cranial modifications has very different genetic lineages. 

One of the skeletons discovered is the first person with mostly East Asian ancestry to be identified in Europe during the Great Migration Period. 

The find marks the oldest known evidence of ACD discovered in Croatia, and the researchers hypothesize that the practice may have been used as a way to distinguish different cultural groups.  

It is unclear if ACD was a common practice or unique to the individuals discovered. 

“The most striking observation, based on nuclear ancient DNA, is that these individuals vary greatly in their genetic ancestries,” said Dr. Mario Novak, an author of the study which was published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0216366">PLOS ONE. </a>

Experts may have just pinpointed how sea-surface temperature patterns influence the number, strength, and distribution of April tornadoes across the south-central region of the United States.

Published by the <a href="https://www.aaas.org/">American Association for the Advancement of Science</a>, the study highlights the fact that changing climate patterns such as warming trends have the potential to affect tornado formation within seasons.

The research may ultimately lead to the development of improved methods for predicting <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tornado-activity-shifting-eastward/">tornadoes</a>, which would help reduce fatalities and widespread property loss during peak tornado months. 

In 2011, nearly 1,700 tornadoes claimed over 500 lives and caused $10 billion in property and crop damage across North America. The next tornado season in 2012 produced 900 tornadoes and resulted in 70 deaths.

In an effort to better understand the potential causes underlying such fluctuations from year to year, the research team conducted a month-by-month analysis of tornado counts across North America from 1954 to 2016. In particular, the investigation was focused on springtime events across Tornado Alley. 

When comparing the number of tornadoes in May to corresponding sea surface temperature patterns, the researchers found no significant connection. This finding indicates that tornadoes occurring in May are more strongly influenced by internal atmospheric processes. 

On the other hand, the team discovered that April tornado activity is strongly influenced by large-scale climate patterns. For example, the April tornadoes were found to be more frequent when equatorial Pacific and eastern North Pacific waters were cooler and subtropical Pacific and western Atlantic waters were warmer. 

Based on these results, the study authors propose that shifting weather patterns within seasons are important factors to consider when measuring the impact of climate change on tornado frequencies.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.bmj.com/">The BMJ</a>.

April tornadoes are strongly influenced by changing climate patterns

Just a few years ago, there was a significant decline in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/drinking-stations-koala-bears-hydrated/">koala</a> population of Cape Otway in Victoria, Australia. 

“In 2013 the koala population reached very high densities, leading them to defoliate their preferred food tree species, manna gum,” explains Dr. Michaela Blyton of the <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/">University of Queensland</a>, an author on a new study published in <a href="https://animalmicrobiome.biomedcentral.com/">Animal Microbiome</a>. “This led to 70 per cent mortality due to starvation, which was very distressing.”

Blyton noticed that even though the koalas were dying of starvation, many of them refused to start eating their less-preferred tree species, known as messmate. This was made stranger by the fact that some koalas feed only on messmate.

“This led me and colleague Dr. Ben Moore at Western Sydney University to wonder if the microbes present in koalas’ guts - their microbiomes - were limiting which species they could eat, and if we could allow them to expand their diet with fecal inoculations,” says Blyton. 

Thus began Blyton’s messy experiment of catching wild koalas and keeping them in temporary captivity in order to collect the end stage product of their messmate diets – less formally known as “poo.”

“We collected poo from radio-collared wild koalas that ate messmate, concentrated the microorganisms in the poo, packaged it into acid-resistant capsules and gave them to the captive koalas,” explains Dr. Blyton. “We then monitored how much messmate the koalas were willing to eat over an 18-day period and assessed how the microbiomes changed after the inoculations, comparing their diets to those of control koalas that received manna gum microbes.”

The results at the end of this period showed that the fecal inoculations actually changed the koalas’ microbiomes and allowed them to eat messmate. 

“This could affect all aspects of their ecology including nutrition, habitat selection and resource use,” says Blyton. “Koalas may naturally have trouble adapting to new diets when their usual food trees become over browsed or after being moved to a new location. This study provides a proof of concept for the use of encapsulated fecal material to successfully introduce and establish new microbes in koalas’ guts.”

Blyton believes that this procedure could be used to help adjust koalas’ microbiomes before they are moved to environments where they have the habitat and food source to survive. The inoculation may also serve as a source of probiotics during and after antibiotic treatment. So next time you complain about needing to swallow a pill, just be thankful that its contents are bound to be more appetizing than a koala’s fecal inoculation.

How fecal inoculations could help save koalas

A team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.amnh.org/">American Museum of Natural History</a>, the <a href="http://english.cas.cn/">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, and the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>, have concluded that the brain evolution of anthropoid primates — a diverse family of both modern and extinct monkeys, humans, and their nearest relatives — was much more complex earlier on in history than previously realized. 

By studying a 20-million-year-old Chilean primate skull (the only skull and known specimen of the Chilecebus carrascoensis) the researchers saw that the brain enlarged repeatedly and independently throughout anthropoid history. 

These findings are published in <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

"Human beings have exceptionally enlarged brains, but we know very little about how far back this key trait started to develop," said lead author Xijun Ni, a research associate at the Museum and a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "This is in part because of the scarcity of well-preserved fossil skulls of much more ancient relatives."

"Through more than three decades of partnership and close collaboration with the National Museum of Chile, we have recovered many remarkable new fossils from unexpected places in the rugged volcanic terrain of the Andes," said John Flynn, the Museum's Frick Curator of Fossil Mammals. "Chilecebus is one of those rare and truly spectacular fossils, revealing new insights and surprising conclusions every time new analytical methods are applied to studying it."

Flynn, Ni, and their colleagues had previously studied Chilecebus and gathered a rough outline of the species’ encephalization, or the brain size relative to body size. Most primate species have encephalization quotients (EQs) relative to other mammals, however some <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/young-brains-impulsive-behavior/">primates</a> have higher EQs than others, such as humans and their closest kin.

To look deeper into the EQ history of anthropoids, the researchers used Chilecebus to map out patterns across the anthropoid family tree, which resulted in a phylogenetic encephalization quotient (PEQ). Most modern monkeys have PEQs of 0.86 to 3.39, whereas Chilecebus had a PEQ of 0.79. And humans have a PEQ of 13.46.

Using this framework, the researchers were able to confirm that cerebral enlargement happened repeatedly and independently throughout anthropoid evolution, as did occasional cerebral reduction.

Ancient skull reveals complex brain evolution in apes and monkeys

Experts at the <a href="https://alleninstitute.org/">Allen Institute for Brain Science</a> have categorized brain cell types to produce the most detailed "parts list" of the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/high-blood-pressure-brain-health/">human brain</a> to date. The research will improve our understanding of the brain, which could transform the way that brain diseases and disorders are treated.

For the first time, an ultra-high-resolution comparison of human and mouse brain cell types has been achieved. The researchers discovered that the majority of our brain cells have a counterpart in the mouse brain. These counterparts have been maintained over approximately 75 million years of evolutionary distance. 

To compare and contrast the human and mouse brains, the researchers studied genes in one region of the human brain a single cell at a time.

"Just as we can use our genes to build our family trees or find long-lost relatives with services like ancestry.com or 23andme, we're letting the genes tell us the story of our brains and their evolution," said study senior author Dr. Ed Lein. "And in the same way that police were able to use information in those genetic databases to track down the Golden State Killer, this new high-resolution view of our brains provides a baseline to find the cells that go wrong in disease."

The brain cell map will help scientists to interpret decades of rodent neuroscience research to be applied to the human brain. For example, some of the findings highlight key differences between mice and people that could explain why so many psychiatric drugs developed in mouse studies do not work in humans.

"The parts list of the human brain is key. That list allows us to understand what's different between mice and human beings and what's similar. The ultimate impact of this understanding will be better treatments for mental illnesses," said Dr.Joshua Gordon. "The eventual goal will be to develop the complete parts list of the entire human brain. It's a hugely ambitious goal, but this paper shows us that it's a doable undertaking."

The researchers found that serotonin receptors are very different between mouse and human brain cells. In mice, these proteins are used by other kinds of neurons, which means that a drug developed to act on a serotonin receptor would not affect a mouse and a person in the same way. This discovery will shed new light on why clinical researchers have struggled to develop effective treatments for depression and other serotonin-related disorders.

The finding that the 75 human brain cell types identified in the study have a counterpart in the mouse brain supports a revelation by the 2003 Human Genome Project that humans and mice have almost the same number of genes.

"Many people would assume that the human brain is more complex than the mouse brain," said Dr. Lein. "It's somewhat of a surprise that at least in terms of cellular diversity, that doesn't seem to be the case. But now that we have a way to make a true apples-to-apples comparison, we start to see many differences in how the genes are used, what the cells look like and the proportions of different cell types in the brain."

Irregular Sonoran monsoon highlights danger of always blaming climate change. The Sonoran Desert in the United States is home to the large cities of Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. On June 26, 1990, Phoenix had its <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-weather/2019/06/26/29th-anniversary-phoenix-heat-record-temperatures-wont-get-close/1575187001/">hottest day on record</a>, a sweltering 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Although California’s Death Valley has reached hotter temperatures, Phoenix is consistently one of the hottest cities in the US with temperatures rising to above 100 degrees daily from May through September. 

There is typically one relief to the physical assault of these extreme temperatures. The Sonoran Desert also has an annual rainy season in the summer. The monsoon rains are where most of the region’s precipitation comes from. Actually, 70% of the annual precipitation in the Sonoran comes during the summer monsoon. 

The monsoon rains have created a desert within the Sonoran like no other in the world and certainly not like any other in North America. The Sonoran Desert covers 120,000 acres of land in Arizona, California and in Mexico – Baja California and Sonora. The desert is the most <a href="https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/public_lands/deserts/sonoran_desert/index.html">biodiverse</a> in North America, with 2,000 native plants, 100 species of reptiles, 60 mammals and 350 bird species. 

At times, walking in the Sonoran it feels more like a forest of saguaro cactus, ocotillo and polo verde rather than a desert at all. The plants and animals in the Sonoran have adapted to dry conditions but also to take advantage of rain bursts, essential for their long term survival. Humans like other animals have long called the Sonoran home and adapted to its beautiful but harsh conditions.        

The Sonoran Desert has been inhabited by humans for at least 12,000 years, the <a href="https://www.desertmuseum.org/books/nhsd_human_ecology.php">Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum</a> reports. The Hohokam of the Sonoran created the largest system of pre-Colombian irrigation canals in North America and created a unique system of agriculture adapted to the Sonoran. Or course, European Americans created a much larger and more intensive irrigation and dam system across the whole of the arid western landscape. 

Cities with human densities like Phoenix and Tucson wouldn’t be possible without intensive water systems. These systems are already on shaky ground from a sustainability standpoint, emptying the Colorado River as it’s about to reach the Sea of Cortez and draining aquifers at a pace that can’t be replenished naturally. Drought only adds another dimension to the predicament. 

This year, the monsoon rains in the Sonoran Desert have been rather unimpressive so far. <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-weather/2019/06/01/arizona-monsoon-2019-forecast-calls-slow-start-heat-rain/3710374002/">AZCentral</a> reports that predictions show a slow start to the Sonoran monsoon season with rain between June and August lower than usual. An easy conclusion to come to would be that global climate change is contributing to the drier and later start to the monsoon, but climate and weather are complicated. 

El Niño conditions in the eastern Pacific Ocean may be a factor in the late start to the monsoon, even though any correlation between the two is minimal. The El Niño created lower than normal spring temperatures, which in turn could be delaying the monsoon later in the summer. Hot air over Mexico builds winds that drive the rain bearing clouds north into the Sonoran Desert, causing the monsoons. Weather in the region and further south is hot now though, which may in turn drive a later monsoon in August and September.  

The irony of the hot, dry summer is that it was caused by a wetter, colder winter. Near Tucson, the year began with a New Year's morning light blanket of snow across a prickly landscape of cactus. Across the west, the overall winter was even more impressively snowy and cold. <a href="https://opensnow.com/news/post/2018-2019-western-united-states-snowpack-recap">OpenSnow</a> reports that some high elevation parts of the US had reasonable snowpack into July this summer. 

The snow started dumping relatively early in November and continued through the winter, allowing many ski resorts in the west to stay open later into the year than usual. <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2019/05/13/colorado-snow-totals-2018-19-winter-season/">The Denver Post</a> called the winter ‘remarkable’ and noted that the snowpack in Colorado was 161% of the 1981-2010 median.  

I <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/donald-trump-climate-weather/">reported earlier</a> about Trump’s mockery of climate change science in the face of cold weather. This is a common tactic for Trump and other climate change deniers, but it also teaches those concerned about climate change a valuable lesson.

Climate change is about gradual average temperature change over time. The <a href="https://features.weather.com/collateral/climate-change-extreme-weather-sidebar/">Weather Channel</a> reports that although there is no real controversy over the fact that carbon emissions are driving a changing climate, specifics are complicated. 

Some extreme weather patterns are almost certainly linked to climate change, for instance the melting of polar ice caps and some glaciers. Other examples of extreme weather are harder to connect directly as caused by global climate change. The increased prevalence of tornados might be due to climate change but it might not be. Droughts and floods happen and which instances are connected to climate change is a bit hard for scientists to say. One thing is certain, blaming all bad weather on climate change is dangerous. 

Trump and others are right to be ridiculed for their arrogance when they proclaim a bad snow day in February invalidates climate change science. For every warm day in the winter and every drought, flood, hurricane or tornado, it’s important to understand, these don’t prove climate change either. The world is complicated and even without a damaged climate, there is variation and the line of causality between a heavy snow in winter and a dry hot day in summer is hard to trace. 

The complicated nature of weather patterns over the Gulf of Mexico and those over the dry canyons, mountains and prairies of the southwestern US are interlinked in ways not easily simplified into brief statements. If we are to keep on the side of scientific understanding, it’s best to embrace the complex nature of our world. Climate change is happening, but to imagine that any one model can capture the whole of it is the same arrogance that blinded us to the interconnectedness between human luxury and climate in the first place.

Irregular Sonoran monsoon highlights danger of always blaming climate change....

A new method for protecting plants from viral infections. A team of scientists led by <a href="https://www.uni-halle.de/?lang=en">Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg</a> (MLU) has developed a new method which may ultimately make it easier to immunize plants for protection against viruses.

Based on plant cell extracts, the researchers created a screening process that can quickly identify and produce substances to combat various pathogens. The technique was modeled after a plant's natural defense system, which is triggered by viral infections and other threats. 

When a <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/plants-water-acid-rain/">plant</a> is attacked by a virus, the cells serve as a host where the virus can reproduce and establish infection by producing viral ribonucleic acid molecules (RNAs). 

Plants detect these molecules and cut them up using special enzyme scissors. As a result, small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are generated throughout the plant to launch a second line of defense. 

The siRNA molecules attach themselves to Argonaute protein complexes, which play a central role in RNA silencing. Next, the siRNA molecules try to guide the Argonaute proteins to the harmful RNAs in an effort to break them down into harmless compounds. 

"By implementing this two-stage process, the plant is trying to protect itself from the virus both at the site of the infection and throughout its structure," said Professor Sven-Erik Behrens. However, he explained, this process is not very efficient. "When a viral infection occurs, lots of different siRNA molecules are produced, but very few of them have a protective effect. The majority simply saturate the Argonaute complexes, rendering them inactive."

The team established a strategy to identify the few antiviral siRNA molecules that are effective against specific viruses so that their dexterity can be exploited for the development of new plant vaccines. 

The siRNA molecules that make the best candidates for reliable vaccination must have two key properties - the ability to bind strongly to the Argonaute complexes and the capacity to lead these proteins in the right direction. 

"If the pathogen changes or the plant needs to be protected against another virus, the established screening process enables suitable RNA molecules to fight the respective pathogen to be identified very quickly," said Behrens. "This means we can be very flexible when it comes to combating new pests."

The researchers plan to continue improving upon their method, and further studies may help to clarify how vaccines can be produced in larger quantities, as well as how they can be absorbed by plants. 

According to Behrens, the research suggests that there is potential for a spray that can be used in greenhouses."Tomato growers have to contend with whiteflies, for example, and these can transfer viruses from one plant to another very quickly." 

While harsh pesticides have been required to kill off insects in the past, the new system may prove to be a much safer and eco-friendly alternative.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://academic.oup.com/nar">Nucleic Acids Research</a>.

Rainwater from 300 million-year-old minerals has helped researchers piece together the surface topography of Western France during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coal-earth-ice/">Late Carboniferous</a> before the dinosaurs. 

A team of researchers from the UK, France, and Germany conducted an isotopic analysis of ancient rainwater stored in granite samples. 

The granite rocks came from Western France, areas that were near the equator and part of the Variscan Belt mountain chain that extended into Spain, Germany, and England.  

As rain fell on this ancient mountain range, fault zones and deep cracks allowed the water to sink below the surface. 

The researchers then determined the chemical composition of the rainwater using spectrometry. 

“Once we realised that the water in the sample was from rainfall, it meant that we could use standard geochemistry techniques to look back into history,” said Dr. Camille Dusséaux, the lead researcher for the study. “This means that the rainfall can tell us about the altitude, the latitude of the mountains where it fell, and hints at why some radioactive minerals are found in the area.” 

The team measured hydrogen isotope ratios in muscovite, a mineral found in granite that has water within its structure. 

“This is not the oldest rainwater ever found, but the oldest where scientists have been able to isotopically reconstruct its composition and history,” said Dusséaux. 

The samples were dated and confirmed to be around 300 million years old, and the chemical composition of the rainwater indicated that the rain fell on a mountain range. 

“This study is a nice example highlighting how traditional isotope geochemistry and careful petrography of minerals formed deep in the Earth can shed light on surface conditions, even before dinosaurs roamed the Earth,” Dr. Catriona Menzies who was not involved in the study commented on the research. 

The study findings were recently presented at the <a href="https://goldschmidt.info/2019/">Goldschmidt Geochemistry Conference</a> in Barcelona.

Newly identified microbe has the potential to transform oil to gas. An oil seep is a natural leak of crude oil and gas that rises up from fractures in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-seafloor/">seafloor</a>. When these hydrocarbons leak out onto the sediment surface, they can support highly diverse habitats in the darkest part of the ocean. 

Even deep in the sediment, where no oxygen exists, hydrocarbons provide an important energy source for subsurface microbes, such as archaea.

A new study led by scientists from the <a href="https://www.mpi-bremen.de/en/Home.html">Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology</a> has identified a microbe, an archaeon named Methanoliparia, that has the potential to transform long-chain hydrocarbons into methane. 

The microbe uses a process called alkane disproportionation, which splits the oil into methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). "This is the first time we get to see a microbe that has the potential to degrade oil to methane all by itself," said study first author Rafael Laso-Pérez.

In the Gulf of Mexico, the scientists collected sediment samples from an oil and gas seep 3,000 meters deep in the ocean called the Chapopote Knoll. Genomic testing revealed that Methanoliparia is equipped with enzymes that are capable of using the oil without having access to oxygen. 

"The new organism, Methanoliparia, is kind of a composite being," said senior author Gunter Wegener. "Some of its relatives are multi-carbon hydrocarbon-degrading archaea, others are the long-known own methanogens that form methane as a metabolic product."

It is important to study Methanogenic microbes because their metabolic product, methane, is a potent greenhouse gas that is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide in the short term. With this in mind, the team also wanted to investigate how widespread these microorganisms actually are.

"We scanned DNA-libraries and found that Methanoliparia is frequently detected in oil reservoirs - and only in oil reservoirs - all over the oceans. Thus, this organism could be a key agent in the transformation of long-chain hydrocarbons to methane," said Laso-Pérez.

Going forward, the scientists hope to gain many more useful insights into this new microbe. 

"Now we have the genomic evidence and pictures about the wide distribution and surprising potential of Methanoliparia. But we can't yet grow them in the lab. That will be the next step to take. It will enable us to investigate many more exciting details," said Wegener. "For example, whether it is possible to reverse the process, which would ultimately allow us to transform a greenhouse gas into fuel. "

For decades, Professor Sharon Long has studied the symbiotic relationships among bacteria that help alfalfa grow, publishing more than 150 papers on this single topic. But now, Long has shifted her focus to citrus greening, which is one of the deadliest diseases for citrus crops in the world. 

"I'm only two generations off a farm, and I read about citrus farmers losing their livelihood and land, and thus also losing generations of family tradition," said Long, who is a biologist at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a>. "We decided to redirect our efforts to work on this problem because we wanted to make a difference."

In the time since Professor Long realized her lab's research could contribute to a solution for citrus greening, her team has found potential treatments for the disease. The researchers have identified 130 compounds to explore further. 

"What we've completed is just a small part of what needs to be done," said study lead author Melanie Barnett. "It's beyond our expertise to pursue these findings to the level needed for real-world application, but it's a foot in the door for researchers who can take those next steps."

By the time that symptoms of the lethal bacterial infection appear, it is too late to save crops from the lethal damage of citrus greening. 

The bacteria that cause the disease, Liberibacter asiaticus, will not grow in a lab and this makes it difficult for scientists to study infected plants. The experts in Professor Long's lab realized they could focus on a distant relative, Sinorhizobium meliloti, which forms symbiotic relationships with certain plants. 

"We've been working on this bacterium for 40 years and have developed tools that allow finely detailed genetic studies to be done," explained Professor Long. "That provides an experimental platform not possible by working directly on this pathogen or even its close relatives."

The researchers introduced genes from the citrus greening bacterium into their familiar S. meliloti cell. These genes are believed to code for a protein that regulates certain aspects of infection.

Next, the team engineered the bacteria so that when the infection-critical proteins were active, the bacteria glowed green in certain light. When they exposed the bacteria to a chemical that inhibits the proteins, the cell would become noticeably less green.

Screening over 120,000 different compounds allowed the experts to pinpoint 130 compounds that visibly reduced the green glow without without affecting the growth of the cell.

"Our system allowed us to find very specific inhibitors that do not harm beneficial bacteria," said Professor Long. "Such inhibitors would be a big improvement compared to environmental spraying of general antibiotics."

The system developed by the team could also be used to test additional chemicals and genes. 

"With this system, any gene from this pathogen or closely related pathogens can be tested in a very controlled way, very efficiently," said Barnett. "The years of research that have gone into studying and working with Sinorhizobium can now save years of time that others would have spent developing such a system from scratch."

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.



The full study was recently published in <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2023GL104851" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
