A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.

Scientists identify a molecular switch that is critical for tissue renewal. The survival of multicellular organisms is strongly tied to their capacity for renewing their tissues. This is especially the case for tissues that are constantly exposed to the external environment, such as the epithelium that lines our <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/ingredient-beer-digestive-health/">digestive tract</a>. 

A research team led by the <a href="https://www.portal.uni-koeln.de/uoc_home.html?L=1">University of Cologne</a> has identified the transcription factor Ets21c as a vital regulator of the regenerative system within the adult intestine of the fruit fly Drosophila. The study highlights the existence of trade-off mechanisms between stress resilience and longevity. 

The intestinal epithelium is involved in nutrient absorption and digestion, but also serves as a selective barrier that prevents the intrusion of pathogens and toxic substances. The intestine is renewed over an organism's lifetime through the function of stem cells that are capable of differentiating to maintain the tissue integrity and function.

On the other hand, stem cell malfunctions have been linked to tissue degeneration or cancer development. The research is shedding new light on the molecular basis of the regenerative processes under both favorable and stressful conditions.

Transcription factors are proteins that directly bind to DNA to regulate which genetic information is expressed and which is suppressed. In response to stress, bacterial infection, and aging, the Ets21c transcription factor has repeatedly been found upregulated. The team used the Drosophila model to switch the function of Ets21c off either in the entire fly or specifically in stem cells of the intestinal epithelium. Surprisingly, flies lacking Ets21c developed normally and outlived the controls when maintained under non-stressed conditions. 

"The Ets21c deficiency, however, revealed its dark side as soon as the mutant flies encountered stress," explained study lead author Dr. Mirka Uhlirova. Flies lacking Ets21c died much faster when fed with herbicide, which generates damaging reactive oxygen species. "The intestine of adult flies emerged as the tissue which requires Ets21c function to confer stress tolerance."

In future studies, the researchers want to investigate whether tissues other than the intestine require Ets21c function for their maintenance and stress responses. They also plan to focus on mechanisms that control the Ets21c levels and activity.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-reports/home">Cell Reports</a>.

Research conducted by immunologists at the <a href="https://www.babraham.ac.uk/">Babraham Institute</a> has demonstrated that transplanting faecal matter from younger mice to older mice revived the gut immune system by stimulating the gut microbiome.

The aging process is particularly hard on the gut, and age-related changes to the human gut <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/link-gut-microbiome-fight-cancer/">microbiome</a> have been linked to increased frailty, inflammation, and intestinal disorders. While these changes coincide with a decrease in the function of the gut immune system, it has not been clear whether there is a direct link.

"Our gut microbiomes are made up of hundreds of different types of bacteria and these are essential to our health, playing a role in our metabolism, brain function and immune response," said study lead author Dr. Marisa Stebegg. "Our immune system is constantly interacting with the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. As immunologists who study why our immune system doesn't work as well as we age, we were interested to explore whether the make-up of the gut microbiome might influence the strength of the gut immune response."

Mice naturally like to sample the faecal pellets of other mice. The study showed that co-housing young and old mice boosted the gut immune system of aging mice, which partially corrected their age-related decline.

"To our surprise, co-housing rescued the reduced gut immune response in aged mice. Looking at the numbers of the immune cells involved, the aged mice possessed gut immune responses that were almost indistinguishable from those of the younger mice," explained Dr. Michelle Linterman.

The findings demonstrate that damage to the gut immune response is not irreparable. According to the study, the decline can be reversed with the appropriate stimuli by turning back the clock on the gut immune system to more closely resemble the conditions found in a young mouse.

The study confirms a link between the effects of the aging immune system and age-related changes in the gut microbiome. Furthermore, the research suggests that probiotics and diet have the potential to promote healthier aging.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Turning back the block on the gut microbiome promotes healthier aging

Buried beneath layers of sediment and preserved for millions of years, researchers from <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a> discovered some of the earliest evidence of flaked and chipped stone tools in Ethiopia. 

The tool fragments are more than 2.58 million years old, which precedes the oldest evidence of systematic and purposeful stone tool production. 

It's a discovery that helps shed light on how human evolution and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-tools-intelligence/">origins of tool use </a>coincide. 

The researchers published their findings in a new study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

The tools were discovered in the excavation site called Bokol Dora 1 (BD 1), and the site is near the same area where the oldest fossil of the genus Homo was discovered. 

"At first we found several artifacts lying on the surface, but we didn't know what sediments they were coming from," said Christopher Campisano, a geologist who helped uncover the tools. "But when I peered over the edge of a small cliff, I saw rocks sticking out from the mudstone face. I scaled up from the bottom using my rock hammer and found two nice stone tools starting to weather out."

After years of meticulous excavating the area by hand, the researchers came across a layer of bones and hundreds of pieces of stone tools indicating human activity and systematic chipping of stones to make knives. 

Luckily, the tools had been discarded near a water source where they were immediately buried and well preserved. 

To date the million-year-old fragments and bones, the researchers dated a layer of volcanic ash located below the site and analyzed magnetic signatures in the sediment. 

The Earth has gone through several pole reversals in it 4.5-billion-year history and these reversals leave a mark in the Earth's soil. The sediment at the BD 1 site has "normal" polarity which means that it's older than other sites which have "reversed" sediment signatures. 

Early humans and chimpanzees were using tools long before modern humans started working with stone, but the difference is how these tools were made and used. Stone tools discovered in Kenya dating back 3.3 million years ago were described as "percussive," which means that the stones were used for hammering and breaking food. 

These tools were called "Lomekwian" while the "Oldowan" tools discovered at BD 1 are distinctly different from those made by chimpanzees and early human relatives. 

"We expected to see some indication of an evolution from the Lomekwian to these earliest Oldowan tools," said Will Archer, a member of the research team. "Yet when we looked closely at the patterns, there was very little connection to what is known from older archaeological sites or to the tools modern primates are making."

Oldowan tools were chipped to create more precise edges, and the artifacts discovered at BD 1 helps illustrate that tool production went through many reinventions over the years. 

Interestingly, the researchers say that the shift to knife-like chipped tools coincides with changes in our human ancestors' teeth and jaw. 

Human teeth started getting smaller along with a change in the way our ancestors ate, and the researchers say that this is closely tied to advancements in tool making. 

"Given that primate species throughout the world routinely use stone hammers to forage for new resources, it seems very possible that throughout Africa many different human ancestors found new ways of using stone artifacts to extract resources from their environment," said David Braun, lead author of the paper. "If our hypothesis is correct then we would expect to find some type of continuity in artifact form after 2.6 million years ago, but not prior to this time period. We need to find more sites."

In an unprecedented study, a team of experts at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">The Ohio State University</a> has created high-resolution maps pinpointing where <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-contamination-groundwater-sources/">groundwater</a> meets the ocean. The research will provide insight that could help protect drinking water as well as the ocean itself. 

The study revealed that nearly half of fresh submarine groundwater discharge flows into the ocean near the tropics. Regions near active fault lines were found to release even larger amounts of groundwater into the ocean. 

On the other hand, the researchers determined that arid regions have very little groundwater discharge, which makes these water supplies more vulnerable to saltwater intrusion.

In collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Saskatchewan, the team combined topographical data from satellites and climate models to examine the flow of groundwater along the coastline. 

"Freshwater-groundwater discharge is a natural line of defense against saltwater intrusion," said study co-author Professor Audrey Sawyer. "And saltwater intrusion is a concern in places like Miami, Georgia, Cape Cod--it's up and down the coast. It's a problem that dry regions have as little groundwater discharge as they do because these are also the places where people are going to tend to look for groundwater to meet their freshwater needs."

This type of monitoring is more difficult than tracking the water quality of a river or stream because groundwater enters another water body from below where it cannot be detected on land. 

"If you've ever been swimming in a lake or in the ocean in the summertime and you go through a cold patch, that is probably a place where groundwater is coming out," said Professor Sawyer. "And that's just one way that groundwater affects surface water - in that case, it's affecting temperature, but it also affects the chemistry of the water. These effects can be hard to measure over large scales."

The research showed that groundwater could be polluting oceans and lakes with nutrients and other chemicals. For example, groundwater can carry higher concentrations of nitrates and mercury.

"This study draws attention to the idea that surface water and groundwater are all connected, and if you start to extract groundwater, you're affecting that connection to our surface water bodies, and that can affect surface water quality, too," said Professor Sawyer. "There is competition between the outward push of groundwater towards the coast and the saltwater that wants to come in, and if we don't have as much of an outward push because we're taking that fresh groundwater out of the ground instead of letting it flow to the coast, it puts us in a more vulnerable position. It's not that we can't use groundwater, but we need to monitor our impact and remember that groundwater is not an inexhaustible resource."

Stem cell therapy restored a sense of smell in mice in an innovative new study that has many positive implications for age-related declines in smell sensitivity. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> and published in the journal Stem Cell Reports.

“This is the first model of smell loss showing evidence of recovery using a cell-based therapy,” said Bradley Goldstein, the senior study author. “It is very important to understand that many questions would need to be worked out before considering this in a human patient. However, it does provide evidence that such an approach warrants further study.”

Twelve percent of the US population currently has an impaired sense of smell, and many factors can contribute to olfaction impairment, including age-related decline, head trauma, or genetic risk factors. 

While not as hindering to quality as life <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hearing-loss-premature-death/">as age-related hearing impairment</a>, any decrease in sense sensitivity can have a detrimental impact on health and well-being. 

As of now, there are no treatments for a lost sense of smell, but recent research has shown that viral gene therapies could help restore olfaction. 

In this study, the researchers wanted to test the potential of stem cell therapy in restoring olfaction, which, unlike viral therapies, can target impaired olfaction caused by a wide range of factors. 

“There is some evidence that a failure to normally replace damaged or lost olfactory neurons may contribute to many forms of acquired olfactory loss,” said Goldstein. “So, we were interested in testing the idea that a cell-based therapy approach, to replace neurons, might be plausible.”

The researchers used gene editing to create mice that had no sense of smell. Drops of globose basal cells were inserted in the noses of the mice and sense of smell was soon restored as the cells worked to repair the sensory neuron connections responsible for olfaction. 

The results hold promise for treating loss of smell in humans, but the researchers say that there is much more work that needs to be done before human trials can begin. 

“To be potentially useful in humans, the main hurdle would be to identify a source of cells capable of engrafting, differentiating into olfactory neurons, and properly connecting to the olfactory bulbs of the brain,” said Goldstein. “Regardless, continuing to study the mechanisms in human cells that are required for production of functional olfactory neurons from progenitor cells will be broadly important for moving forward.”

Crop production makes the world go round – especially top crops like barley, cassava, soybean, wheat and sorghum. But climate change may already be having an effect on yields for the top 10 crops, and it isn’t hitting everywhere equally.

A new study led by researchers at the <a href="https://twin-cities.umn.edu/">University of Minnesota</a>, who teamed up with colleagues at the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a> and <a href="https://www.ku.dk/english/">University of Copenhagen</a>, looked at weather reports and crop data to see if climate change is affecting farmers. 

They found that climate change is having an influence on crop production, and in some surprising ways.

"There are winners and losers, and some countries that are already food insecure fare worse," lead author Dr. Deepak Ray of Minnesota said in a press release.

They found that most of the top 10 food crops are seeing production changes, with oil palm production dropping by 13.4 percent; soybean crops saw an increase of 3.5 percent. The net change for all of the top 10 was a 1 percent decrease in production, the researchers said.

Europe, Australia and southern Africa saw mainly declines in crop production. South America saw its production mostly go up. Results were mixed in Asia, North America and Central America.

The researchers also saw that about half of food insecure nations were seeing crop declines – but so are many industrial nations, they said.

The results of the study has the researchers worried.

"This is a very complex system, so a careful statistical and data science modeling component is crucial to understand the dependencies and cascading effects of small or large changes," co-author Dr. Snigdhansu Chatterjee of Minnesota said.

The report raises major red flags not just for food producers and traders, the researchers said. Everyday citizens should be concerned as well – especially those in countries that are seeing declines in crop production.

"The research documents how change is already happening, not just in some future time,"  Ray said.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0217148">PLOS ONE</a>.

The amount of radiation that is reflected back toward space by the Earth's surface is referred to as its albedo. In a recent report, the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> (ESA) described how the extent of the sunlight that can be bounced off of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/generate-electricity-snow/">snow</a> is affected by its grain size.

Both snow and albedo play major roles in our planet's climate system. Scientists are now applying a new analytical theory to Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite data to shed new light on Greenland’s changing albedo.

According to the ESA, about one-third of the sunlight that hits the Earth is reflected, while the other two-thirds is absorbed by the atmosphere, land, and the ocean.

Those surfaces with lighter colors are capable of redirecting more sunlight than those with darker colors. For example, a planet completely covered in ice could reflect over 80 percent of sunlight back into space. A planet completely covered in forest, however, could only reflect 10 percent of the light and radiation. 

"The albedo of Earth’s surface varies naturally according to the changing colors of the season, but long-term trends in changing snow and ice cover, as well as changing vegetation cover and air pollution, are having an impact on the overall balance of Earth’s albedo - and, hence, on how much heat it absorbs," explained the ESA.

Fresh, dry snow tends to have a small grain size that is under 0.5 mm in diameter. As it melts, the grain size grows and the larger grains reflect less sunlight. A team led by Alex Kokhanovsky has provided scientists with a fast and accurate method of retrieving snow grain size from satellite images.

"One way of measuring the albedo of snow is to monitor how the surface colour changes because of pollution such as from wildfire soot. But this doesn’t give us the whole story. Remarkably, this exciting new theory allows us to retrieve snow grain size from satellite optical images," explained Jason Box, who is an expert at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS).

"Through ESA’s Earth Observation Science for Society program, we have been able to demonstrate this over Greenland. We have found that pulses of warm air cause dark blemishes far inland on the ice sheet, contributing to increased climate sensitivity."

The technique will eventually be applied to areas with more complex terrain than Greenland. In addition, the grain size data will ultimately be used to improve weather forecasts.

A new study has found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/anesthesia-weaken-traumatic-memories/">anesthetic drugs</a> are not degraded or impacted by the freezing conditions found in Antarctica. Even when the drugs were left outside with little protection from the elements, testing showed that the drugs were safe to use. 

The research was conducted by Major Ricardo Navarro-Suay from the <a href="http://www.comunidad.madrid/centros/hospital-central-defensa-gomez-ulla">Hospital Central de la Defensa “Gómez Ulla”</a> in Spain and presented at the annual meeting of the <a href="https://www.esahq.org/">European Society of Anaesthesiology</a>. 

Doctors and Anaesthetists need to be sure that their medical supplies are not affected or altered by environmental factors even in extreme environments, as this could endanger a patient’s safety or make treatment difficult. 

For this study, the researchers exposed fentanyl citrate, etomidate, rocuronium bromide, and suxamethonium chloride, all of which are common anesthetics, to Antarctic weather conditions. 

The researchers placed vials of the drugs in a clear plastic bag and left the bags outside for 72 hours on Deception Island in Antarctica. 

Daily weather measurements were recorded, and the researchers examined the vials 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours after they were placed outside to look for any signs of damage. 

After the experiment, the researchers analyzed the drugs using high-resolution liquid chromatography. 

All four of the drugs were still safe to use and were within the 99-110 percent margins of security. 

The researchers say that the extreme cold may have even benefitted the chemical makeup of the drugs.  

“Sometimes a drug can be changed or improved with weather conditions, like light or cold. The drug administration security interval is from 95 to 110% so these results show we could employ these drugs safely to patients under the extreme conditions like the polar weather found in Antarctica,” said Navarro-Suay.

Anesthetic drugs still work in extreme environments like Antarctica

Researchers and military members sometimes must travel to extreme and...

Google Earth allows us to navigate the world through our computer or phone screens, zooming into <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/coastal-cities-fastest-growing-population/">cities</a> and communities all over the world with a birds-eye view of the land. For the average civilian, this technology can help provide better directions to a location, or just serve as a fun time-waster as you jump from one continent to the next. 

But it may not surprise you that a tool such as this could be of great service to the military. Recently, a report from <a href="http://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/">National Defense</a> details an initiative from the U.S. military that is attempting to develop what one researcher called “Google Earth on steroids.”

This improved version of the technology would map entire landscapes and entire cities with the potential of even mapping the inside of buildings. This could then be used to simulate environments and train soldiers.

The initiative is named “One World Terrain,” and is made possible by recent advances in drone technology and databases of satellite imagery. <a href="https://cdn.defenseone.com/b/defenseone/interstitial.html?v=8.28.0&amp;rf=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.defenseone.com%2F">Defense One</a> reports that building a city the size of San Francisco would have taken an entire year previously while costing more than $1.7 million, but now it’s possible to reconstruct a city this size in roughly 8 hours.

It was also reported that researchers were able to map and recreate one compound in about an hour using a mixture of commercially available software and unmanned aerial vehicles. This allowed researchers to spend less time designing terrain and other natural environments, giving them the freedom to build other aspects of the simulation – such as the interior of buildings.

“The interior of buildings are now being fused and snapped inside of that 3D model,” army researcher Jason Knowles told National Defense, adding that the program has tools that “strip the outside of a building level by level and see what’s inside the building.”

The hope for the future of this technology is that it will eventually be able to simulate a wall’s underlying characteristics, determining whether or not it could be breached by an explosive, munition, or vehicle. But in its current state, this tool is still of great use to the military for training purposes.

As we’ve reported, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/left-behind-science-research-excludes/">underrepresentation</a> in scientific research continues to put many women and minority groups at risk. 

But research, studies, and lab tests also leave out female animal subjects due to the persistent notion that female hormones will get in the way of collecting accurate and useable data. 

The fact that women are still described as “hormonal” and emotional does nothing to remedy these dated views. 

Rebecca Shansky, a neuroscientist from <a href="https://www.northeastern.edu/">Northeastern University</a>, tackled this stereotype in a new perspective titled “Are hormones a ‘female problem’ for animal research?” which was published in the journal Science. 

Many researchers today continue to operate under the false idea that ovarian hormones in female animal subjects will skew data and because of this, animal test subjects are often mainly male. 

This is not only problematic because its founding is based on sexist ideas, but it can also be dangerous when researchers leave out female test subjects.

“When we view females through a male lens, we risk missing what may be at the crux of the question for females,” said Shanksy. 

Mood and anxiety disorders like Major Depressive Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are twice as prevalent in women, yet studies with mostly male test subjects will do little to help explain why women have an increased risk of these mental health disorders. 

What’s surprising is that these troublesome stereotypes were not called seriously into question and scientifically examined until 2014, when a meta analysis showed that in female mice, the estrous cycle had no impact on the data and responded no differently than the male mice in the tests. 

It wasn’t until 2016 when the Sex as a Biological Variable mandate was implemented in the US for grant-funded research, but some scientists continue to work around this rule by conducting tests first on male animal subjects and then redoing the test on female subjects. 

“[This strategy is] dangerous because it perpetuates the dated, sexist, and scientifically inaccurate idea that male brains are a standard from which female brains deviate,” said Shanksy.

Shanksy urges researchers to ensure that gender stereotypes or bias to color or skew their research. 

“Women are not more complicated than men, and hormones are not a ‘female problem’ for animal research. We need to stop treating them that way,” said Shanksy.

The DNA of 41 human skeletons dating back thousands of years is helping researchers piece together the transition from foraging to farming and herding in Africa. 

An international team of archeologists, geneticists, and museum curators analyzed ancient DNA to help pinpoint the origins of farming and herding in East Africa. 

The team, led by researchers from <a href="http://www.slu.edu/">Saint Louis University</a>, detailed their findings in a new study published in the journal Science. 

Herding livestock as a form of food production first spread through Kenya and Tanzania 5,000 years ago and later <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/east-africas-hunter-gatherers-ancestry/">foragers in East Africa</a> interacted and mixed with herders. 

But exactly how and when these populations came together was unknown. 

“The origins of food producers in East Africa have remained elusive because of gaps in the archaeological record,” said Mary Prendergast, a co-first author of the study. “This study uses DNA to answer previously unresolvable questions about how people were moving and interacting.”

The DNA analyses showed that between 4,500 and 3,500 years ago, foragers in East Africa interacted with herders and herding livestock quickly spread through the region. 

After 3,500 years ago though, the two groups split off again and became genetically isolated although still living in the same areas next to each other. This suggests that after a brief interlude of co-mingling, the two groups had strict social barriers in place. 

It wasn’t until 1,200 years ago that the researchers found evidence of another major genetic shift when migrations of people from northeastern and western Africa spread into East Africa, bringing with them farming and iron-working. 

“Today, East Africa is one of the most genetically, linguistically, and culturally diverse places in the world,” said Elizabeth Sawchuk, a co-first author of the study. “Our findings trace the roots of this mosaic back several millennia. Distinct peoples have coexisted in the Rift Valley for a very long time.”

DNA sheds light on the story of first farmers and herders in East Africa

African mole-rats have an unbelievable tolerance for pain which allows them to burrow next to venomous ants and eat roots that other animals would avoid. 

In a new study, researchers from the <a href="https://www.mdc-berlin.de/">Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine </a>(MDC) and the <a href="https://www.up.ac.za/">University of Pretoria </a>in South Africa isolated the genes that are directly responsible for pain insensitivity in mole rats. 

Published in the journal Science, the results help show the underlying genetic mechanisms that make some mole rats less <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chinese-tree-shrews-spicy-peppers/">sensitive to pain</a>.

“The insights provided by our studies of these animals should help, among other things, in the development of new pain-relieving drugs,” said Gary Lewin who first discovered the extent of mole-rat pain tolerance back in 2008. 

For the study, Lewin and colleagues tested pain tolerance in naked mole-rats and eight related species of mole rats. 

The mole rats were exposed to diluted hydrochloric acid, capsaicin, and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC). Each substance is known to cause a burning sensation when it touches the skin of humans and mammals. 

Mole rats are naturally exposed to some of these substances which are found in the roots and tubers they forage for and eat. 

The researchers injected the substance into the paws of the rats, and three mole-rat species were unphased by the hydrochloric acid. Two of the species in the study did feel the capsaicin solution but only one species, the highveld mole-rat, was unaffected by the AITC. 

“This was a thrilling finding for us,” says Lewin. “AITC attacks amino acids in the body and can thus destroy proteins. That is why all the other species we know avoid coming into contact with the substance.” 

After establishing which species were impervious to which substances, the researchers collected sensory tissue from the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia from all nine species in the study.

Gene sequencing technology allowed the researchers to compare gene activity and isolate two altered genes in the highveld rat. 

The genes contain the blueprint for the ion channels TRPA1 and NaV1.7, which are known for their role in pain sensitivity and perception.

Substances like AITC activate these channels, and in highveld rats, the TRPA1 channel is completely switched off. 

The researchers also found that pain sensitivity could be “turned on” again in the mole-rats. 

“From the thousands of genes we were looking at, we had obviously found the very gene responsible for the highveld mole-rat’s remarkable pain resistance,” said Lewin.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
