A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.

The last <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthal-tools-hunt-distance/">Neanderthals</a> died off around 40,000 years ago after migrating from Africa to Europe, and there have been many theories as to what led to the demise of our extinct early relative.

Was it climate change, disease, or did interactions with modern humans cause Neanderthals to go extinct? Even though Neanderthals are some of the most intensely studied group of fossils today, researchers are still unsure about how the species went extinct. There are indeed several hotly contested debates about Neanderthal extinction. 

In a new study, researchers from the <a href="https://www.univ-amu.fr/">Aix Marseille Université</a> in France used a modeling approach to test different hypothetical extinction scenarios. 

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0216742">PLOS ONE</a>, and the researchers developed a model to simulate how demographic changes could have contributed to Neanderthal population declines over 4,000 to 10,000 years. 

“This study of the disappearance of the Neanderthals published today in PLOS ONE does not attempt to explain ‘why’ the Neanderthals disappeared, but to identify ‘how’ their demise may have taken place,” the researchers wrote. 

First, the researchers created baseline demographics parameters and identified what factors lead to a stable population by using data on Neanderthals, modern hunter-gatherers, and large apes. 

Next, the researchers tested different demographic changes like drops in fertility rates or an increase in infant mortality. 

If populations in the scenarios fell below 5,000 individuals, the researchers considered that extinct. 

The models showed that Neanderthals could have gone extinct within 10,000 years if fertility rates decreased by 2.7 percent, even earlier if fertility rates dropped by 8 percent. 

If infant survival dropped by 0.4 percent, this could have also led to eventual extinction in 10,000 years. 

The study is one of the first of its kind to show how small demographic changes could lead to extinction. 

“This original approach is made on the basis of demographic modeling,” the researchers said. “The results suggest that a very small reduction in fertility may account for the disappearance of the Neanderthal population.”

According to a new report from the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/27/us/politics/trump-climate-science.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share">New York Times</a>, President Donald Trump and his administration will complete the overhaul of Obama-administration efforts to curb greenhouse-gas emissions as well as attempt to undermine <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">climate science</a> in order to cut back climate change policy.

One such attempt to sweep climate change under the rug will revolve around the lack of reporting on climate science studies. Specific sectors of the federal government will no longer report on the future effects of the warming planet and alert people to what the globe may look like at the end of the century if climate change is not addressed. 

In fact, White House-appointed director of the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">United States Geological Survey</a>, James Reilly, has ordered that scientific assessments produced by that office must only use computer-generated climate models that predict climate change impacts through 2040 rather than through the end of the century, as has been commonplace.

Trump and his administration have also been heavily targeting the <a href="https://nca2014.globalchange.gov/">National Climate Assessment</a>, which has produced a new report roughly every four years, each pertaining to climate change figures if fossil fuel emissions aren’t cut back. The NCA team has already begun work on the next report, however, worst-case scenario projections will not longer be automatically included in the Assessment or in some other government-produced scientific reports.

“What we have here is a pretty blatant attempt to politicize the science — to push the science in a direction that’s consistent with their politics,” Philip B. Duffy, the president of the <a href="https://whrc.org/">Woods Hole Research Center</a>, and who also served on a <a href="http://www.nasonline.org/">National Academy of Sciences</a> panel that reviewed the government’s most recent National Climate Assessment, told the Times. “It reminds me of the Soviet Union.”

“The previous use of inaccurate modeling that focuses on worst-case emissions scenarios, that does not reflect real-world conditions, needs to be thoroughly re-examined and tested if such information is going to serve as the scientific foundation of nationwide decision-making now and in the future,” added James Hewitt, a spokesman for the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/">Environmental Protection Agency</a>.

The president also hopes to assemble a new climate review panel led by William Happer, a 79-year-old Princeton physicist who has claimed that “the demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler.” Happer currently serves on the National Security Council as President Trump’s deputy assistant for emerging technologies. 

Happer, who is a beneficiary of far-right billionaires Robert and Rebekah Mercer, who have used their riches to fund efforts to debunk climate science, has been dismissed by most climate scientists, including his peers at Princeton. He is also disliked by several White House officials, who have urged the president not to adopt Happer’s ideas and proposals.

Whether or not President Trump adopts Happer’s proposal, he will still take strides to undermine the severity of climate change and climate science. Since backing out of the Paris accord in 2017, it’s clear the president is determined to ignore evidence of warming in order to benefit his colleagues within the oil, gas, gold, and rare-earth mineral industries.

However, individual government science agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have stated they will continue to produce thorough climate models that do not give in to the administration’s request for data limitations.

“It is very unfortunate and potentially even quite damaging that the Trump administration behaves this way,” Johan Rockström, the director of the <a href="https://www.pik-potsdam.de/pik-frontpage">Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research</a> in Germany, told the New York Times. “There is this arrogance and disrespect for scientific advancement — this very demoralizing lack of respect for your own experts and agencies.”

Trump administration moves to undermine climate science

How exploding stars may have led to humans walking upright. Scientists are describing a celestial phenomenon that may have ultimately caused humans to walk upright. According to a study from the <a href="https://ku.edu/">University of Kansas</a>, the Earth was bombarded by cosmic energy from supernovae over millions of years. At its peak 2.6 million years ago, this influx of energy initiated an avalanche of electrons in the lower atmosphere and triggered a series of events that led to bipedal movement. 

The researchers theorize that atmospheric ionization instigated a large increase in cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that lit forests on fire all over the world. This likely means that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/diverse-climates-homo-sapiens-thrive/">homo sapiens</a> mastered the ability to walk upright in response to the transformation of forests into savannas.

"It is thought there was already some tendency for hominins to walk on two legs, even before this event," said study lead author Professor Adrian Melott. "But they were mainly adapted for climbing around in trees. After this conversion to savanna, they would much more often have to walk from one tree to another across the grassland, and so they become better at walking upright. They could see over the tops of grass and watch for predators. It's thought this conversion to savanna contributed to bipedalism as it became more and more dominant in human ancestors."

The researchers have found evidence in seafloor deposits that supernovae exploded around 163 light years away from the Earth during the transition from the Pliocene Epoch to the Ice Age.

"We calculated the ionization of the atmosphere from cosmic rays which would come from a supernova about as far away as the iron-60 deposits indicate," said Professor Melott. "It appears that this was the closest one in a much longer series. We contend it would increase the ionization of the lower atmosphere by 50-fold. Usually, you don't get lower-atmosphere ionization because cosmic rays don't penetrate that far, but the more energetic ones from supernovae come right down to the surface - so there would be a lot of electrons being knocked out of the atmosphere."

Professor Melott and study co-author Brian Thomas explained that ionization in the lower atmosphere meant an abundance of electrons would form more pathways for lightning strikes.

"The bottom mile or so of atmosphere gets affected in ways it normally never does," said Professor Melott. "When high-energy cosmic rays hit atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they knock electrons out of them - so these electrons are running around loose instead of bound to atoms. Ordinarily, in the lightning process, there's a buildup of voltage between clouds or the clouds and the ground - but current can't flow because not enough electrons are around to carry it. So, it has to build up high voltage before electrons start moving. Once they're moving, electrons knock more electrons out of more atoms, and it builds to a lightning bolt. But with this ionization, that process can get started a lot more easily, so there would be a lot more lightning bolts."

According to Professor Melott, ancient carbon deposits support the idea of widespread fires because they correspond with the timing of the Earth's bombardment.

"The observation is that there's a lot more charcoal and soot in the world starting a few million years ago," said Professor Melott. "It's all over the place, and nobody has any explanation for why it would have happened all over the world in different climate zones. This could be an explanation. That increase in fires is thought to have stimulated the transition from woodland to savanna in a lot of places - where you had forests, now you had mostly open grassland with shrubby things here and there. That's thought to be related to human evolution in northeast Africa. Specifically, in the Great Rift Valley where you get all these hominin fossils."How exploding stars may have led to humans walking upright

Professor Melott pointed out that there will not be a cosmic event like this anytime soon. In the next million years, the nearest star capable of exploding is 652 light years away. 

"Betelgeuse is too far away to have effects anywhere near this strong," said Professor Melott. "So, don't worry about this. Worry about solar proton events. That's the danger for us with our technology - a solar flare that knocks out electrical power. Just imagine months without electricity."

A panel of scientists has now officially recognized that human activities have pushed our planet into a new geological era called the Anthropocene, which means "age of man." The <a href="https://theanthropocene.org/topics/anthropocene-working-group/">Anthropocene Working Group</a> (AWG) formally approved not only the term of the new epoch, but also its origin in the 1950s when humans began leaving their permanent mark on the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/venus-mars-insight-earth/">Earth</a>. 

As they define the beginning of the new era, the AWG scientists are working to pinpoint what geological feature best describes its initiation. This "golden spike" may encompass the hydrogen bomb tests of the 1950s, a spike in the burning of fossil fuels, or the emergence of widespread poultry farming. 

The AWG is chaired by Professor Jan Zalasiewicz from the University of Leicester. "The Anthropocene works as a geological unit of time, process and strata. It is distinguishable. It is distinctive," he explained.

The golden spike that the team is probing is technically called a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), which will produce an exact date and location for the signal of the beginning of the Anthropocene. The GSSP must be measurable in the geological record in rocks, lake sediments, ice cores, or other formations in order to qualify as the sign of a new epoch. 

Professor Zalasiewicz suggested that there are a lot of options. "We are spoiled for choice," he told <a href="https://www.afp.com/en">AFP</a> in 2016. "There's a whole array of potential signals out there." For example, a spike in atmospheric CO2 can be measured in ice cores, while microplastic pollution is appearing in sediments around the world.

The AWG will now construct a proposal to be considered in 2021 by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, which is in charge of the official geologic time chart.

In a new study — the first of its kind to functionally link DNA mutations to autism — researchers used artificial intelligence to demonstrate how mutations in “junk” DNA can cause <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-autism/">autism</a>. 

Their findings are published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-019-0420-0">Nature Genetics</a>.

Via machine learning, the research team analyzed complete genomes of 1,790 individuals with autism and their unaffected parents and siblings. Those participating in the study did not have a family history of autism, which meant that their autism was caused by a spontaneous mutation.

The machine learning system predicted that mutations that cause autism are located in parts of the genome that do not encode proteins — regions often called “junk” DNA. The number of autism cases linked to the noncoding mutations was similar to that of cases linked to protein-coding mutations that disable gene function, meaning this discovery goes beyond autism.

"This is the first clear demonstration of non-inherited, noncoding mutations causing any complex human disease or disorder,” said study leader Olga Troyanskaya, the deputy director for genomics at the <a href="https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-biology/">Flatiron Institute's Center for Computational Biology (CCB)</a> and a professor of computer science at <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton University</a>.

"This [discovery] enables a new perspective on the cause of not just autism, but many human diseases,” added co-author Jian Zhou of CCB and Princeton.

Mutations in protein-coding regions of the genome (which only make up about 1-2% of the entire genome) account for at most 30% of autism cases that aren’t linked to a family history of autism. The research team also found evidence to suggest that autism-causing mutations must happen elsewhere in the genome as well.

To figure out which noncoding mutations may cause autism, the team used machine learning to predict how any given sequence would affect gene expression. They applied the machine learning technique to a collection of genetic data called the <a href="https://www.sfari.org/resource/simons-simplex-collection/">Simons Simplex Collection</a>, which contains the whole genomes of about 2,000 “quartets,” meaning a child with autism, an unaffected sibling, and two unaffected parents.

"This is a shift in thinking about genetic studies that we're introducing with this analysis," said Chandra Theesfeld, a research scientist in Troyanskaya's lab at Princeton. "In addition to scientists studying shared genetic mutations across large groups of individuals, here we're applying a set of smart, sophisticated tools that tell us what any specific mutation is going to do, even those that are rare or never observed before."

"The design of the Simons Simplex Collection is what allowed us to do this study," said Zhou. "The unaffected siblings are a built-in control."

The analysis showed that noncoding mutations in many of the children with autism altered their gene regulation, and these mutations also affected gene expression in the brain and genes linked to autism.

 "This is consistent with how autism most likely manifests in the brain," said study co-author Christopher Park, a research scientist at CCB. "It's not just the number of mutations occurring, but what kind of mutations are occurring."

Troyanskaya hopes to expand their methods and use them to improve how genetic data is used for diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders outside of autism.

"Right now, 98 percent of the genome is usually being thrown away," Troyanskaya said. "Our work allows you to think about what we can do with the 98 percent."

Mutations in ‘junk’ DNA can cause autism

Investigation reveals new clues to the evolution of language and communication. In an effort to better understand how <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-storage-learn-language/">human language</a> and communication developed, a team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/en/institutes-museums/einrichtungen/dpz/">Leibniz Institute for Primate Research</a> has analyzed the vocalizations of vervet monkeys. It is known that East African vervets have specific alarm calls to warn for a leopard, eagle, or a snake, and the researchers wanted to investigate the call system used by the closely-related <a href="http://www.earth.com/image/the-gambia-river-in-west-africa/">West African</a> vervets.

To examine how the West African vervets would react to unknown sounds, the researchers flew a drone over a group of monkeys and later played them a sound recording of the drone noise. The reactions of the monkeys indicated that they learned very quickly what the sound of the drone meant. 

However, instead of creating a new vocalization, the animals used the alarm call that East African vervets use to warn of eagles or other aerial predators. According to the study authors, this suggests that the call structure was determined long ago in the course of evolution and has been conserved.

Leopards, eagles, and snakes are the three main predators faced by East African vervet monkeys, and the animals use alarm calls that are followed by a specific strategy. When they hear the call for leopard, for example, they climb a tree. The call for eagle means to search the sky and hide, while the call for snake means to freeze like a statue on two legs.

The West African green monkeys were found to use alarm calls for leopards and snakes, but had not developed a call for aerial predators. When the research team carried out the drone experiment, the animals reacted to the drone sound with alarm calls, searched the sky, and hid. 

"The animals quickly learned what the previously unknown sounds mean and remembered this information," said study lead author Julia Fischer. "This shows their ability for auditory learning."

The calls used by West African vervets closely resembled those used by East African vervets as an eagle approaches. Scientists identify dozens of genes that led to the evolution of humans. Researchers from the <a href="http://www.utoronto.ca/">University of Toronto</a> have identified genes that are unique to humans and may help to explain our very existence. The study was focused on dozens of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dog-ownership-influenced-genes/">genes</a> that code for proteins called transcription factors (TFs), which are responsible for converting DNA into RNA.

TFs recognize short, recurring patterns across DNA known as motifs and then use them as binding sites to turn genes on or off. It was previously thought that similar-looking TFs bind similar motifs across different species, but the current study has produced evidence which contradicts this theory. 

By using a new computational method, the team was able to better predict motif sequences that each TF binds with. The experts found that some sub-classes of TFs are much more functionally diverse than what was expected.

Study lead author Sam Lambert worked in the lab of Professor Timothy Hughes at the <a href="http://ccbr.utoronto.ca/donnelly-centre-cellular-and-biomolecular-research">Donnelly Centre</a> for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.

"Even between closely related species there's a non-negligible portion of TFs that are likely to bind new sequences," said Lambert. "This means they are likely to have novel functions by regulating different genes, which may be important for species differences."Scientists identify dozens of genes that led to the evolution of humans

According to the researchers, even between chimps and humans - who share 99 percent of the same genetic makeup - there are dozens of TFs that would ultimately express hundreds of genes in different ways. "We think these molecular differences could be driving some of the differences between chimps and humans," explained Lambert.

Professor Hughes is excited about the possibility that some of these TFs could be responsible for the unique features of the human immune system and brain, which are the most complex among animals. The findings may also shed new light on distinct  differences between the sexes, or sexual dimorphism. These differences guide mate selection and decisions that have a major impact on reproductive success.

'Almost nobody in human genetics studies the molecular basis of sexual dimorphism, yet these are features that all human beings see in each other and that we are all fascinated with," said Hughes. "I'm tempted to spend the last half of my career working on this, if I can figure out how to do it!"

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ng/">Nature Genetics</a>.

Anyone interested in creepy, crawly creatures may have already known that mites and ticks are both arthropods – an incredibly diverse grouping that also includes spiders, scorpions, bees, locusts, crabs, cockroaches and mosquitoes, among others. New genetic data, though, points to a closer relationship.

A genetic study of 10 species of mites and 11 species of ticks found that they’re much more closely related than anyone expected. 

Mites and ticks are both, along with spiders and scorpions, members of the group Chelicerata under the larger arthropod umbrella. The new research, however, shows that they are not two separate groups of species, but rather a single evolutionary lineage.

The discovery could change how scientists think of the chelicerates.

"Spiders, with more than 48,000 described species, have long been considered the most biodiverse chelicerate lineage, but 42,000 mite and 12,000 tick species have been described. So, if mites and ticks are a single evolutionary entity rather than two distantly related ones, they are more diverse than the spiders,” co-author Dr. Davide Pisani of the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> said in a press release.

Arthropods make up about a million of the estimated 9 million animal species on Earth. Not only that, but fossils show that they have been around for about 500 million years. Scientists are still trying to work out how all of the species relate to one another.

"Because of their anatomical similarities it has long been suspected that mites and ticks form a natural evolutionary group, which has been named Acari,” Dr. Greg Edgecombe of the <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/">Natural History Museum London</a> said. “However, not all anatomists agreed, and genomic data never found any support for this idea before."

Because of the roles that many arthropods play in the food chain – from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-bees-crops-humans/">bees that pollinate crops</a> to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-virus-dangerous-mite/">mites that endanger them</a>, from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tick-mosquito-borne-disease-spreading/">ticks and mosquitoes carrying disease</a> to <a href="https://www.earth.com/animals/edible-crab-cancer-pagurus/">crabs beloved by foodies</a> – determining how they are all related is a chore. Figuring it out, however, could lead to advances in agriculture or against diseases like malaria and Lyme disease. 

The discovery that mites and ticks are close cousins can help researchers piece together other relationships between chelicerates.

"Regardless of the methods we used, our results converge on the same answer – mites and ticks really do form a natural group. Evolutionary trees like the one we've reconstructed provide us with the background information we need to interpret processes of genomic change,”  lead author Dr. Jesus Lozano Fernandez of the University of Bristol said. "Our genealogical tree can now be used as the foundation for studies using comparative genomics to address problems of potential biomedical and agricultural relevance, like the identification of the genomic changes that underpinned the evolution of blood-feeding parasitic ticks from ancestors that weren't blood-feeders."

For decades, scientists have believed that the organs and structures within a living cell simply float around in the cytoplasm. A new study turns this on its head, discovering that cell structures are actually organized into a sort of “cell-wide web” that carries signals throughout the cell.

"We found that cell function is coordinated by a network of nanotubes, similar to the carbon nanotubes you find in a computer microprocessor,” Dr. Mark Evans of the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a> said in a press release.

The discovery changes our entire understanding of how cells are structured. Previously, cells were thought to send signals like waves through the cytoplasm. But the Edinburgh team found that signals move across a network structured similarly to a computer’s circuit board. 

Unlikely in a computer, however, the cell-wide web is plastic – it can rapidly restructure its communication network as needed.

The Edinburgh team discovered the cell-wide web by studying how calcium-charged move within each cell using high-powered microscopes and computer algorithms similar to those used by Katie Bouman and her team to reveal an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIvezCVcsYs">image of a black hole</a>.

"The most striking thing is that this circuit is highly flexible, as this cell-wide web can rapidly reconfigure to deliver different outputs in a manner determined by the information received by and relayed from the nucleus,” Evans said. “This is something no man-made microprocessors or circuit boards are yet capable of achieving."

Each signal gives the nucleus information that signal slight changes in structure. The changes then dictate which genes are switched on and off. For example, when a cell moves into its growth phase, the cell-wide web is reconfigured to turn on the genes that trigger growth.

Scientists hope that understanding the code cells use to transmit signals will help doctors understand diseases like cancer and pulmonary hypertension, and maybe even open up new treatments.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10055-w">Nature Communications</a>.

'Cell-wide web' carries signals throughout cell structure

A polymer cube that reacts to light and shadow is actually a nature-inspired computer that can perform basic addition and subtraction.

Researchers at <a href="https://www.mcmaster.ca/">McMaster University</a> were inspired by how plants turn to capture sunlight and cuttlefish change their skin for camouflage when they created the tiny cube, about the size of a die used in board games.

The translucent cube is filled with an amber-colored polymer that transforms from a liquid to a gel when researchers shine bands of layered light into the cube’s sides.

"These are autonomous materials that respond to stimuli and do intelligent operations," Dr. Kalaichelvi Saravanamuttu, who supervised the project, said in a press release. "We're very excited to be able to do addition and subtraction this way, and we are thinking of ways to do other computational functions."

The polymer cube is the basis for an entirely new form of computing. While the cube can only perform some very basic functions now, the team believes it can form the foundation for a much more complex and useful technology, perhaps one that would be organized like a neural network.

The team shined a neutral carrier beam through the cube to a camera that would read how the polymer refracted the light. The light would be refracted through the polymer in a variety of complex patterns; interpreting those patterns gave the team the results of their simple equations.

“Data input as binary (dark-bright) strings generate a unique distribution of filament geometries, which corresponds to the result of a specific operation,” the team wrote in their paper.

The students used a branch of chemistry called nonlinear dynamics – which engineers light-reactive materials – to conceive of the new polymer.

They're not the only researchers looking at light as a potential way to improve computer technology. Researchers at <a href="https://home.dartmouth.edu/">Dartmouth College</a> are looking at how to use light to <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/scientists-are-using-light-to-speed-up-the-internet/">speed data transfers</a>.

"We don't want to compete with existing computing technologies," said graduate student Fariha Mahmood, who co-authored the study. "We're trying to build materials with more intelligent, sophisticated responses."

Their research has been published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10166-4">Nature Communications</a>.

New technology uses light, polymer cube for computing

Scientists have found a surprisingly large amount of frozen water buried beneath the sandy surface of Mars, according to two new studies published in the <a href="https://sites.agu.org/">American Geophysical Union’s</a> journal Geophysical Research Letters. 

The ice sheets are sandwiched between layers of sand, similar to the layers of a cake, and these layers provide evidence that the ice caps on <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/venus-mars-insight-earth/">Mars</a> declined and increased depending on the planet’s tilt. 

There is enough frozen water buried beneath the surface that if the ice were to melt it would create a planet-wide layer of water five feet deep. 

The discovery was made by researchers from the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin</a> and the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/">University of Arizona</a> who reviewed and analyzed measurements taken by <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/mro/">Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter</a>. 

Not only does the data show rich deposits of ice comprised of 90 percent water in some areas, but the icy strata are also reliable indicators of past climate on Mars. Studying the layers could help researchers in their quest to determine if there was once life on the Red Planet. 

“We didn’t expect to find this much water ice here,” said Stefano Nerozzi, the lead author of the new study. “That likely makes it the third largest water reservoir on Mars after the polar ice caps.”

Nerozzi’s findings were corroborated by a second independent study conducted by researchers from <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">John Hopkins University </a>who used gravity rather than radar to examine the composition of Mars. 

It’s long been theorized that Mars was once home to robust ice caps that shrank as the planet tilted toward the sun, but until now evidence of these ice caps has been challenging to find. 

It was even thought that Mars’ ice caps completely vanished, but the new studies show that ancient layers still linger, protected by sand.

Surprising amount of frozen water found beneath the surface of Mars

Scientists have found a surprisingly large amount of frozen water...

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/facial-recognition-technology/">Facial recognition software</a> is now being used to help conservationists identify wild pandas in China. Tracking and monitoring these critically endangered animals can be challenging because of the extremely similar markings and faces that many pandas have.

To remedy this problem, researchers from the <a href="https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1169756-d1795796-Reviews-China_Conservation_and_Research_Center_for_the_Giant_Panda-Wenchuan_County_Sichu.html">China Conservation and Research Center</a> for Giant Pandas started a facial recognition project in 2017, according to <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-05/17/c_138066845.htm">Xinhua News</a>. 

Now, the Research Center has a database of 120,000 photos and 10,000 video clips. So far, 10,000 of the images have been annotated, analyzed, sorted and categorized. 

By filtering through thousands of panda images, the software will be able to cross-reference the database and identify a specific panda. 

The goal of the facial recognition project is to have a better way to collect data, track specific pandas, and monitor both wild and captive panda populations. 

“The app and database will help us gather more precise and well-rounded data on the population, distribution, ages, gender ratio, birth and deaths of wild pandas, who live in deep mountains and are hard to track,” Chen Peng, a researcher who is working on the project told Xinhua News. “It will definitely help us improve efficiency and effectiveness in conservation and management of the animals.” 

To see the software in action, visitors to the Conservation and Research Center can download the app, scan a panda’s face, and learn more information about the animals currently in captivity there. 

Pandas are one of the species most vulnerable to climate change. Like the polar bear, it’s continued existence is reliant on its preferred habitat and food sources. 

Bamboo makes up the majority of a panda’s diet, but habitat degradation due to climate change, deforestation, and urban sprawl are all threatening bamboo stocks.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
