A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092-8674(25)00917-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cell</a>.

Million year-old mammoth microbes reveal new clues about disease

Petrologists from <a href="https://www.rice.edu/">Rice University</a> believe that Earth received most of its elements essential for life — those being nitrogen, carbon, and other volatile elements — from another planet. More specifically, they believe that the planetary collision that resulted in the moon being created 4.4 billion years ago gave <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/asteroids-hitting-earth/">Earth</a> the elements needed to spark life.

"From the study of primitive meteorites, scientists have long known that Earth and other rocky planets in the inner solar system are volatile-depleted," said Rajdeep Dasgupta, the study’s coauthor. "But the timing and mechanism of volatile delivery has been hotly debated. Ours is the first scenario that can explain the timing and delivery in a way that is consistent with all of the geochemical evidence."

Dasgupta and his team conducted a series of high-temperature, high-pressure experiments to retrieve their theory, published January 23rd in <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>. Via these experiments, lead author and graduate student Damanveer Grewal collected enough evidence to test a potential theory that Earth’s volatiles came from a collision with an embryonic planet with a sulfur-rich core. Grewal explains that the planet in question must have had a sulfuric core in order to explain the presence of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen within Earth’s layers sans the core — known as the bulk silicate.

After several experiments regarding Earth’s core formation and the possible collision of a sulfur-rich planet, Dasgupta, Grewal and Rice postdoctoral researcher Chenguang Sun, designed a computer simulation using the experimental information as well as known ratios and concentrations of elements both on Earth and in non-terrestrial bodies. This simulation calculated the most likely situation — out of about one billion possible situations — during which Earth’s volatiles were formed.

"What we found is that all the evidence — isotopic signatures, the carbon-nitrogen ratio and the overall amounts of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in the bulk silicate Earth — are consistent with a moon-forming impact involving a volatile-bearing, Mars-sized planet with a sulfur-rich core," Grewal said.

"This study suggests that a rocky, Earth-like planet gets more chances to acquire life-essential elements if it forms and grows from giant impacts with planets that have sampled different building blocks, perhaps from different parts of a protoplanetary disk," Dasgupta said. "This removes some boundary conditions. It shows that life-essential volatiles can arrive at the surface layers of a planet, even if they were produced on planetary bodies that underwent core formation under very different conditions."

Because Dasgupta firmly believes Earth’s bulk silicate could not have attained the life-essential elements on its own, he says researchers can now “ broaden our search for pathways that lead to volatile elements coming together on a planet to support life as we know it."

The saga behind Einstein’s stolen brain is many things, part comedy, part tragedy and all with an eclectic cast of characters including doctors, Einstein's relatives, determined journalists, and even renowned beat poet William Burroughs. 

But what the story of Einstein’s stolen brain teaches us most is how far advances in neurology and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brains-cerebellum-addictive-behavior/">neuroscience</a> have come since the early 1950s. 

Our story starts with a pathologist, Thomas Harvey, who was on call at Princeton Hospital on April 18th, 1955. Einstein, the founding father of relativity and creator of the equation E = mc2, had just died after an abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptured a few days prior. 

Harvey, the “hero” of our tale, performed the autopsy after Einstein’s death and brought a small keepsake home with him, Einstein’s brain, which he kept in his possession for the majority of the rest of his life. 

What could drive such an act? According to Harvey, it was the pursuit of genius, or rather, discovering what makes a genius. Even though it was against Einstein’s last wishes, Harvey was able to convince Einstein's family that the brain offered an amazing opportunity for scientific discovery. 

Harvey wanted to find out what allowed the German theoretical physicist to unlock some of the greatest mysteries of our universe and to see if he could identify any differences in Einstein's brain to help explain the phenomenon. 

To the outside eye it would appear a noble pursuit, but as you dig deeper into the story, you begin to question Harvey's motives. 

And then there is the small fact that neuroscience was still in its early phases, relative to our understanding of the brain today, and so examining Einstein's brain amounted to a Herculean task at the time. 

In his book Postcards from the Brain Museum, Brian Burrell wrote of <a href="https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4602913">Harvey’s optimistic goals</a> and his own limitations as a pathologist:

“It should be emphasized that Thomas Harvey was not a brain specialist. His understanding of the brain did not extend beyond the postmortem diagnosis of disease, atrophy, or injury. Which is to say that he had neither the means nor the expertise to undertake the study he had proposed to Einstein's son.” 

Thomas Harvey would go on to lose his job at Princeton, his medical license, and go through a string of divorces, girlfriends, and jobs before ending up on a front porch in Kansas, talking with William Burroughs about the brain. 

Einstein's brain did not make it through these few decades of Harvey's life unscathed, and most of the brain was sectioned up into pieces and preserved in celloidin, according to <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/phenomena/2014/04/21/the-tragic-story-of-how-einsteins-brain-was-stolen-and-wasnt-even-special/">National Geographic. </a>

Pieces of Einstein's brain were sent to researchers all over the world. In fact, Burrell writes that Burroughs would brag that he could have a piece of the brain any time he wanted. 

This is not to say that Harvey hoarded Einstein’s brain away and didn’t perform any scientific research. A few (easily debunked) studies were published that were collaborations between Harvey and other researchers. 

The first study was published in 1985 and was conducted by researchers in California and Harvey. According to National Geographic, the study claimed that Einstein had disproportionate levels of glial cells. 

A 1996 study claimed that Einstein had thinner brain tissue compared to control brains and in 1999, a study published in the Lancet compared photographs of Einstein’s brain (before it was carved up into pieces and preserved) with other brains. The results of that study showed that Einstein had abnormal folding in parts of his brain compared to control brains. 

But even if these studies were accurate and the results replicable, do the abnormalities explain Einstein’s genius or was Einstein simply a genius with certain abnormalities in his brain? 

As we delve deeper in the story of Einstein's brain and the “mad scientist” that took it, it’s important to also look at how our understanding of the brain has changed throughout the years. To say that brain science has made great strides in recent years would be an understatement, to say the least.

In the 1800s, it was all about phrenology and phrenologists gained notoriety by claiming that the shape of someone’s skull could tell you everything you needed to know about a person. 

Harriet Dempsey-Jones, a researcher in Cognitive Neurosciences at the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford, </a>discussed the practice of phrenology in <a href="https://theconversation.com/neuroscientists-put-the-dubious-theory-of-phrenology-through-rigorous-testing-for-the-first-time-88291">The Conversation</a> writing:

“Phrenologists believed the brain was comprised of separate “organs” responsible for different aspects of the mind, such as for self-esteem, cautiousness and benevolence. They also thought of the brain like a muscle – the more you used a particular organ the more it would grow in size (hypertrophy), and less used faculties would shrink.” 

By feeling the bumps, ridges, and shape of a person’s skull, phrenologists believed you could gain insight into how people think and act. 

Incidentally, phrenology is what drove Joseph Carl Rosenbaum to steal the head of deceased composer <a href="http://mentalfloss.com/article/66717/why-does-haydns-tomb-contain-two-skulls">Joseph Haydn</a> in the early 1800s, but that’s a kidnapped head story for another day. 

Phrenology fell largely out of favor in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the late 1800s that neuron theory began to emerge with Ramón y Cajal who is considered to be the father of <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/illusion-chasers/santiago-ramon-y-cajal-the-young-artist-who-grew-up-to-invent-neuroscience/">modern neuroscience. </a>

In 1932, the Nobel Prize was offered to Edgar Douglas Adrian and Charles Sherrington for their research on the neuron and how neurons transmit messages. 

The 1950s was a burgeoning decade for neuroscience and science in general thanks to the discovery of DNA’s structure and huge strides were made advancing our understanding of <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/may/05/henry-molaison-amnesiac-corkin-book-feature">memory and the hippocampus</a>. 

But when it came to unlocking the secrets of genius and Einstein’s brain, it was more than a matter of being the wrong pathologist for the job. There were simply too many limitations for Harvey, or perhaps any renowned researcher, to overcome. 

In the 1990s Harvey donated what remained of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/story/the-bizarre-posthumous-journey-of-einsteins-brain">Einstein’s brain back to a pathologist at Princeton</a> and died in 2007, leaving behind a legacy that continues to fascinate audiences today.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> developed a new “brain training” mobile phone game that actually improves users’ concentration. This is good news for young people who have become more easily <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/digital-media-distract-drain/">distracted</a> due to pinging phones, poor sleep quality, and daily stressors.

“We've all experienced coming home from work feeling that we've been busy all day, but unsure what we actually did," said Professor Barbara Sahakian from Cambridge’s <a href="https://www.psychiatry.cam.ac.uk/">Department of Psychiatry</a>. "Most of us spend our time answering emails, looking at text messages, searching social media, trying to multitask. But instead of getting a lot done, we sometimes struggle to complete even a single task and fail to achieve our goal for the day. Then we go home, and even there we find it difficult to 'switch off' and read a book or watch TV without picking up our smartphones. 

She explained, “For complex tasks we need to get in the 'flow' and stay focused." And that’s exactly what this new app is programmed to help users do.

A research team from Cambridge’s Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute developed a game called “Decoder.” Professor Sahakian and her colleagues have proven that playing Decoder on an iPad for eight hours over the course of a month will improve a user’s attention and concentration.

To come to this conclusion, Professor Sahakian and team studied 75 young adult participants, each divided and put into one of three groups. The first group was given Decoder, the second was given Bingo, and the third group received no game at all. Those given games were invited to play for one hour at eight different intervals throughout a single month.

All 75 participants were tested with the CANTAB Rapid Visual Information Processing test (RVP), commonly used to measure concentration and attention, both before and after the gaming period, as well as with the Trail Making Test, used to measure attention shifting. Researchers found that those who played Decoder exhibited better attention and concentration than those who played Bingo or no game at all, and their ability to shift attention was not compromised.

In fact, playing Decoder had the same effect on participants as taking a stimulant drug like Ritalin or nicotine. These results were published January 20th in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/behavioral-neuroscience">Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience</a>.

"Many people tell me that they have trouble focussing their attention,” Professor Sahakian said. “Decoder should help them improve their ability to do this. In addition to healthy people, we hope that the game will be beneficial for patients who have impairments in attention, including those with ADHD or traumatic brain injury. We plan to start a study with traumatic brain injury patients this year."

Under the app developer Peak, Decoder has become available to those with Apple technologies via the Peak Brain Training app.

China has confirmed that the scientist who oversaw the birth of the world’s first <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/gene-edited-dna-twin-babies/">gene-edited babies</a> acted illegally, according to a report from state-run Xinhua news.

One of the biggest ethical concerns surrounding <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/gene-editing/">gene-editing and CRISPR-Cas9</a> technology is that these advancements could pave the way for “designer babies.”

Chinese authorities are now investigating He Jiankui, a Chinese scientist who shocked the world when he announced the successful births of two gene-edited twin girls, nicknamed Lulu and Nana, whose mother had undergone in-vitro fertilization and whose father had HIV. 

Jiankui explained that Lulu and Nana were perfectly healthy and that he had edited their genes so that they were resistant to HIV and would be unable to contract the disease. 

Gene surgery was performed when the twins were just a single cell to “close the door” to HIV, Jiankui explained in a video interview. 

While the idea that you could eradicate genetic diseases and risk of infection is a noble one, the risks of editing and snipping around the human genome cannot be taken lightly, and Jiankui’s unethical practices which had been shrouded in secrecy to avoid discovery broke every rule in the book.

While working at the <a href="http://www.sustc.edu.cn/en/">Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)</a>, it’s believed that Jiankui privately funded the research project, hired a team of experts to carry out the work, and forged ethical review papers to recruit eight couples. 

In each couple, the father was HIV-positive and the mother negative. So far Lulu and Nana are the only twins born from the experiments, but another couple is pregnant, according to the team investigating Jiankui and his research. 

The university that Jiankui worked at has publicly condemned his actions and announced that the researcher was fired from his position at the school, according to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6614607/China-says-doctor-gene-edited-babies-acted-own.html">Daily Mail.</a> Another report argued that Jiankui had only conducted the research for <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/local/2019-01/21/c_1124020517.htm">personal gain and notoriety. </a>

Currently, Jiankui is under house arrest as the investigation into his work continues.

Everyone knows or thinks they know of T. Rex and Velociraptor sp. from popular portrayals in movies and books like Jurassic Park.  We’re accustomed to these examples of dangerous predatory dinosaurs but those of us seriously interested in dinosaurs know they’re just the tip of the iceberg.  

Large raptors like Utahraptor and other Tyrannosaurids like Albertosaurus of Canada or Teratophoneus of the Grand Staircase-Escalante barely start to fill out a history of almost 200 million years occupied by the likes of Allosaurus and even giant birds (technically dinosaurs) like Moas.  It’s a history that spans the whole globe as well. Predatory Tarbosaurus lived in Mongolia with Velociraptor, theropod (two legged predator) dinosaurs have been found in South America and Africa.  A few theropod fossils have been found in Australia and even Antarctica as well. But now, a new chapter in the history of predator dinosaurs has been discovered.

As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-predatory-jurassic-dinosaur/">we reported</a> last month, researchers working in the Italian Alps have discovered what so far is the oldest example of a ceratosaurian.  Ceratosaurians are the oldest clade of theropod dinosaurs, perhaps best known by the horned Ceratosaurus as well as the Dilophosaurus that played an important role in Jurassic Park.  Both of these examples have strange head gear, the crest on top of the Dilophosaurus (sorry but the neck frill was pure Hollywood invention) and a horn on the nose of the Ceratosaurus.  

As the oldest of theropods, it’s possible that these dinosaurs were the ancestors of all theropod dinosaurs but it’s impossible to say for sure at this point.  According to the <a href="http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/diapsids/saurischia/ceratosauria.html">University of California Museum of Paleontology</a>, Ceratosaurians were very bird-like that scientists believe first evolved during the Triassic, a period that started about 225 million years ago.  Despite this, no examples of Ceratosaurians have been found earlier than the Jurassic. 

The new dinosaur discovered in Italian Alps is still a Jurassic dinosaur of about 198 million years ago but it’s the oldest of its type found so far.  Other theropod dinosaurs close to the same age are rare and often incomplete. Other old theropod dinosaurs from Europe include incomplete discoveries like a pelvis, vertebrae and femur found in England and a 40% complete Dracoraptor skeleton from Wales. 

The new dinosaur has been named Saltriovenator zanellai and is not only older than any other Ceratosaurians found so far, it also seems to represent the largest predator dinosaur that old known to science. The dinosaur is about 25 million years older than previously known large theropod dinosaurs.  This is also the first Jurassic dinosaur fossil found in Italy. The find was <a href="https://peerj.com/articles/5976/">just recently published</a> but the fossil was found by an amateur fossil hunter at a quarry back in 1996.

It seems from bite marks left by invertebrates on the bones that the dinosaur died and was nibbled at in the ocean, it likely drifted into before eventually being covered in sediment and fossilized in an area that slowly became part of the Italian Alps.  

The dinosaur is estimated to have weighed 1 ton, measuring 7.5 meters in length when alive and was armed with sharp serrated teeth similar in form and function to other theropod dinosaur teeth as well as living Komodo dragons.  Uniquely S. zanellai has three fingers rather than four as would be expected and seems to have some features common to later dinosaurs mixed with those of earlier dinosaurs.  

The new dinosaur is important in showing the state of dinosaur evolution at that time.  Despite the probability of Ceratosaurians in the Triassic, we know very little about these early theropod dinosaurs.  The end of the Triassic represented a major extinction much less famous than the one that killed off dinosaurs. So the beginning of the Jurassic represent a time when new forms were evolving and filling niches left open by the earlier extinction event. 

 It seems that Saltriovenator zanellai is just one example of an explosion in the diversity of Ceratosaurians spreading across the world.  Examples of other dinosaurs from Morrocco, South Africa, Massachusetts, Antarctica and elsewhere seem to reflect this interpretation of dinosaur evolution.  In <a href="https://peerj.com/articles/5976/">their paper</a>, the scientists, Cristiano Dal Sasso​, Simone Maganuco and Andrea Cau describe the importance of the find to dinosaur paleontology, 

“…In this context, the discovery of a new specimen from the Sinemurian of Italy is extremely relevant as it is among the oldest Jurassic theropods, it is larger than all other pre-Aalenian theropods (see Skeletal reconstruction and body size section, below) and it improves our knowledge on some of the macroevolutionary patterns that would have characterized the evolution of Theropoda during the Jurassic. It also represents the first dinosaur skeleton from the Italian Alps, the first of Jurassic age, and the second theropod skeleton found in Italy...”

In the evolution of birds more generally, this find also represents a new piece of information on the formation of bird hands (and eventually wings).  The fossil shows that long before evolving into wings, the arrangement of bones in dinosaurs were for grasping and struggling with prey. Today, we’re more accustomed to thinking of living dinosaurs (birds) as having no real hands at all but wings, flippers or nearly useless vestiges.  While munching on hot wings or watching birds sitting on a wire, it’s interesting to reflect on the amazing power of evolution over mind boggling lengths of time. 

It’s likely that older Ceratosaurian dinosaurs are still hidden somewhere waiting to be found.  Paleontology itself is a speculative science relying on necessarily incomplete physical evidence and hypotheses based on the best of this evidence.  This discovery if anything verifies what scientists have thought about the origins of theropod dinosaurs, showing that they were evolved into something similar to what we expect later in geologic history by the Jurassic.  Scientists speculate that they may have existed even earlier than that. This discovery also shows that Europe played an important role in the evolution of theropod dinosaurs and opens up new possibilities of where to look for them.

Meet the oldest large predatory dinosaur ever found

Everyone knows or thinks they know of T. Rex and...

A subglacial <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/operation-icebridge-returns-to-antartica/">Antarctic</a> lake buried beneath a kilometer of ice contains the remains of ancient life that have been preserved for thousands of years. 

Researchers that drilled into Lake Mercer to study the lake and collect sediment samples found carcasses of crustaceans, a tardigrade, and even preserved plant material in the mud collected from the lake floor. 

The discovery was part of the <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/concept-and-purpose/">Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access</a> expedition which used a high-pressure water drill to melt a small hole through the thick layer of ice that sits above Lake Mercer. 

This is the first time that the lake has ever been explored in depth, as previously, radar and remote sensing technology were the only way to access the lake. 

After cleaning mud off a water temperature instrument, David Hardwood, a micro-paleontologist who was part of the SALA expedition, examined the mud under a microscope, according to a release from <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Hardwood found diatom shells and crustacean carcasses that looked relatively new. 

“It looked really fresh,” Hardwood told Nature. “Like something that had been living.”

Lake water samples that were collected were also analyzed and revealed that the lake was teeming with bacteria and had plenty of oxygen to support life. 

At first, Hardwood was concerned that the equipment used to measure the water temperature might have been contaminated, and so the SALA team cleaned the equipment and dropped it back in the lake for another test. Again, Hardwood found ancient animal remains. 

The ancient signs of life are both exciting and puzzling for the researchers who discovered them, according to Nature.

It is unclear how the carcasses, shells, and microbes got there in the first place, especially since some of the ancient species discovered used to live on or near land.

One potential theory is that the creatures originated from ponds in the Transantarctic Mountains near Lake Mercer and a period of warming washed sediment and organic material into the lake which was then covered by ice as temperatures shifted. 

The next step for the SALA researchers is to carbon date the organic material found in the mud, which could help show exactly how and when the different animals ended up in Lake Mercer.

Ancient fossils found preserved in Antarctic subglacial lake

New research from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/home">University of Edinburgh</a> shows that rocks found in the North Sea off the UK coast could be used as long-term storage locations for <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/california-renewable-2045/">renewable energy</a> production.

Researchers believe that pressurized air in porous rocks can be trapped via an advanced technique that uses electricity from renewable technologies. The pressurized air could then later be used to drive a turbine that would generate large amounts of electricity — perhaps enough to meet the UK’s electricity needs during winter, when demand for such is highest.

Engineers and geoscientists from the Universities of Edinburgh and <a href="https://www.strath.ac.uk/">Strathclyde</a> developed the process, which they have dubbed compressed air energy storage (CAES), and calculated its potential via mathematical models. Using estimates from these models and a database of geological rock formations in the North Sea, the team believes porous rocks off the UK coast could store about one and a half times the UK's average electricity demand for January and February.

CAES would work by using electricity generated by renewable technologies to power a motor that generates compressed air. The compressed air would be stored in sandstone pores via a well drilled into the rock. This pressurized air could then be released during times of energy shortage and used to generate turbine electricity.

Their study and findings were published January 21st in <a href="https://www.nature.com/nenergy/">Nature Energy</a>.

"This method could make it possible to store renewable energy produced in the summer for those chilly winter nights. It can provide a viable, though expensive, option to ensure the UK's renewable electricity supply is resilient between seasons. More research could help to refine the process and bring costs down." said study leader Dr. Julien Mouli-Castillo, of the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/geosciences">University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences</a>.

Rocks off the UK coast could be used for renewable energy storage

New research from the University of Edinburgh shows that rocks...

SUE the T. rex is famous for being the most complete skeleton ever discovered of the world's most popular dinosaur. And now, hidden in the leftover sediment that once surrounded SUE's bones, experts have found the remains of a new shark species.

For decades, the leftover rock that Sue was recovered from has been stored underground. When scientists took a new look at it, they found teeth from a <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/exploding-star-shark-megalodon/">shark</a> that they believe lived in a river SUE drank from.

“This shark lived at the same time as SUE the T. rex, it was part of the same world,” said study co-author Pete Makovicky, the curator of dinosaurs at the <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/">Field Museum</a>. “Most of its body wasn't preserved, because sharks' skeletons are made of cartilage, but we were able to find its tiny fossilized teeth.”

The team of researchers, led by Terry Gates of <a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/">North Carolina State University</a>, named the shark Galagadon nordquista. This name honors Karen Nordquist, a retired chemist and Field Museum volunteer who discovered the tiny fossils, and also references the shark’s teeth, which have a triangle shape like the spaceships in the 1980s video game Galaga.

“Galagadon was less than two feet long - it's not exactly Jaws,” said Makovicky. “It's comparable to bamboo sharks living today. It probably had a flat face and was very likely camouflage-colored, since its relatives today have a camouflage pattern. It would have eaten small invertebrates and probably spent a fair amount of time lying on the bottom of the riverbed.”

The discovery of Galagadon is shedding completely new light on the area where SUE the T. rex once lived. 

“We had always thought of the SUE locality as being by a lake formed from a partially dried-up river - the presence of this shark suggests there must have been at least some connection to marine environments,” said Makovicky. “This wasn't some Sharknado event - these animals were making their way up rivers from the sea.”

Study co-author Eric Gorscak explained, “Today, carpet sharks, which include bamboo sharks and wobbegongs, mostly live in the waters in southeast Asia and Australia, so it's surprising to find their fossils at the SUE locality.”

“During the Late Cretaceous the continents continued to drift apart, further isolating dinosaurs and other land animals, and at the same time created the Atlantic and Indian oceans. With occasional seaways connecting these young oceans, we have found fossils of marine life flourishing globally, including Galagadonand its relatives.”

The study highlights the importance of fossils beyond those belonging to dinosaurs. 

“Every species in an ecosystem plays a supporting role, keeping the whole network together,” said Gates. “There is no way for us to understand what changed in the ecosystem during the time of the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous without knowing all the wonderful species that existed before.”

The research is published in the <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-paleontology">Journal of Paleontology</a>.

Cells must stay in shape in order to successfully reproduce. A team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk/">Francis Crick Institute</a> has found that staying in the right shape is essential for the reproductive success of cells. The study demonstrated that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/death-brain-cells-beneficial/">cells</a> must maintain a certain proportion in order to properly divide. 

The researchers identified a biological foundation for scaling, by which cells stay proportionate as they shrink or grow. Although this phenomenon continues throughout life, its physiological origins have remained unclear. Cells must stay in shape in order to successfully reproduce


The analysis, which was focused on yeast cells from the related S. japonicus and S. pombe species, showed that scaling plays a vital role in cell division. In order to divide, fission yeast cells copy their DNA and then split down the middle to create two new cells. 

According to the study, staying in the right shape is essential for cells to find their “middle” where the split should occur. For example, fission yeast cells are usually pill-shaped, and the researchers found that if the cell is too round it cannot receive clear signals about where its middle is located. As a result, two copies of DNA may end up in one cell, with none in the other.

“If a division leaves two copies of DNA in one cell, the one without DNA will die and the one with two copies is likely to have problems when it next divides, which in human cells can lead to cancer,” explained study co-author Professor Snezhka Oliferenko. 

“To avoid this, it's vital that the division happens in the right place. We found that a cell's shape determines where it will divide, highlighting the crucial function of scaling at the cellular level. This helps to answer the fundamental evolutionary question of why and how organisms would evolve the ability to scale when their size changes.”

In an effort to conserve nutrients, yeast cells that are genetically edited or nutritionally restricted shrink when they divide.

“We found that S. japonicus relies on a gene called rga4 to regulate growth so the cell keeps its shape when it shrinks,” said study lead author Dr.  Ying Gu. “The cells simply divided into thinner cells of the same shape, which were able to live and multiply as normal.”

The team discovered that when the rga4 gene was inhibited, the cells lost their ability to scale, grew too wide, and divided off-center. However, when these genetically-edited cells were grown in a narrow channel to keep them thin, they divided normally.

“As long as the length-to-width aspect ratio is correct, S. japonicus can accurately divide in the middle and continue to thrive,” said Professor Snezhka. 

“It's a beautiful organism to study, as it allows us to test fundamental biological principles and get clear, elegant results. We can ask questions like 'What's the point in scaling?', 'Why does cell shape matter?' and many more. By studying the similarities and differences between S. japonicus and sister species like S. pombe, we can gain insights into processes that are fundamental to life itself.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Cells must stay in shape in order to successfully reproduce....

A giant lizard that lived almost 300 million years ago has been reconstructed in the form of a robot. The study revealed that the ancient creature was capable of more upright walking than what was previously thought.  

The investigation was focused on the remains of a lizard known as Orobates pabsti, which dates back millions of years before <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-nasal-passages-cool/">dinosaurs</a>. The scientists digitally scanned the fossils and matched them with well-preserved O. pabsti footprints to create computer simulations that could accurately represent the unique gait of the ancient animal. 

Reptiles, birds, and mammals known as amniotes were thought to be the first to evolve stronger muscles and limbs that were positioned well for efficient upright movement. The findings of this study, however, suggest that the development of an upright gait predated amniotes.

Study co-author Dr. John Nyakatura from <a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en/">Humboldt University</a> said: “Our metrics indicate that Orobates exhibited more advanced locomotion than has previously been assumed for earlier tetrapods (four-legged animals), which suggests that advanced terrestrial locomotion preceded the diversification of crown amniote.”

O. pabsti  grew up to five feet in length and weighed around nine pounds. Much like a crocodile, it had a long body and tail with a small skull and short legs.

“To our knowledge, no reconstructions of the locomotor characteristics of stem amniotes based on multiple quantitative methods have previously been attempted,” said Dr. Nyakatura. “Previous methods have relied on anatomical features alone, ambiguous locomotor information preserved in fossils or unspecific modelling of dynamics.”

“Here we quantitatively examine plausible gaits of the stem amniote Orobates pabsti, a species that is known from a complete body fossil preserved in association with trackways.”

“We reconstruct likely gaits that match the footprints. Our metrics indicate that Orobates exhibited more advanced locomotion than has previously been assumed for earlier tetrapods.”

According to the researchers, the study sheds new light on how animals moved from the oceans to conquer land. 


The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Almost 50 years ago, two men did what no one had ever done before: walked on the lunar surface.

When they landed on the Moon, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left behind an American flag and plaque that read: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.”

In seven missions between 1969 and 1972, a dozen astronauts walked on the Moon, with the help of six pilots. According to the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a>, they’ve brought back more than 800 pounds of moon rocks, soil and other material from the lunar surface.

But the Moon was an object of fascination long before anyone landed on its surface.

Test your knowledge: Landing on the lunar surface to tonight's eclipse

If you often feel isolated, the cause may go deeper than you think. Genetic researchers have found that loneliness genes may be behind those solitary feelings, at least some of the time.

But that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to sadness. Putting yourself into fulfilling social situations can head off feelings of isolation before they set in.

To see whether loneliness genes exist and how nature and nurture affect feelings of friendlessness, researchers from the <a href="https://www.uwo.ca/">University of Western Ontario</a> looked at the lives of adult twins.

They found that the twins had very similar experiences up until they reached school age – and often, ended up in different classrooms. In pairs of twins more prone to loneliness, whether or not they made friends and developed a social life had an impact on how lonely they felt.

“If one makes friends in their class and is happy with the level of interaction they are having with other people, they are less likely to feel lonely,” lead author Dr. Julie Aitken Schermer told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>. “The [identical] co-twin has the same genetic likelihood of loneliness and is in an environment that is not as fulfilling in terms of relationships, they are more likely to experience feelings of loneliness.”

That may seem obvious.

But loneliness genes played a role, too. Identical twins were more likely to feel similar levels of loneliness regardless of their environment than fraternal twins. And those with a tendency toward neuroticism – one of the “big five” personality traits that DNA can influence – were more prone to feeling isolated.

“If you're neurotic you're more likely to worry about your situation, your lot in life, and ruminate and that may exasperate your feelings of loneliness,” Aitken Schermer said.

Researchers found a couple of ways to help relieve neuroticism and loneliness: practicing mindfulness, and cutting down screen time. 

While some people may need more face time to counteract their loneliness genes than others, even introverts should make an effort to connect, Aitken Schermer said.

“We have to realize that we are social beings and having feelings of isolation is not a character fault and go interact with people,” she said. “It's not a weakness on your part, you're showing insight into yourself. If you're hungry, go eat.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."

Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.

The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
