A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092-8674(25)00917-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cell</a>.

A new study is calling into question everything we thought we knew about volcanic eruptions. 

It’s long been assumed that large chambers of magma located deep within the Earth are what drive eruptions, and this magma is turned to lava as it spews out of the mouth of a volcano.

However, researchers from<a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/"> Imperial College London</a> and the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> are challenging this fundamental theory and instead suggest that volcanoes are fed by mush reservoirs <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crystals-magma-forecast-eruptions/">made up of crystals</a> with small magma pockets. 

A study detailing their findings and reasoning behind the new hypothesis was published in the journal Nature. 

“We now need to look again at how and why eruptions occur from mush reservoirs,” said Matthew Jackson, the lead author of the study. “We can apply our findings to understanding volcanic eruptions with implications for public safety and also to understand the formation of metal ore deposits associated with volcanic systems.”

This is not the first time the mush reservoir model has been proposed, but previous models were not able to explain why magma contains so few crystals or old crystals if the eruption is fed from underground reservoirs filled with mostly solid crystal. 

The researchers were able to solve this problem with a more sophisticated mush reservoir model that showed how magma is less dense than the crystals and can spring up from small spaces between the crystals. 

“The new idea developed by geologists at Imperial and Bristol is that molten rock forms within largely crystalline hot rocks, spending most of its time in little pores within the rock rather than in large magma chambers,” said Stephen Sparks, the co-author of the study. “However, the rock melt is slowly squeezed out to form pools of melt, which can then erupt or form ephemeral magma chambers.”

The study helps explain some of the biggest mysteries of volcanic eruptions and completely contradicts everything we have come to know about magma chambers.

Volcanoes may be driven by “mush” reservoirs, not magma chambers

A new study is calling into question everything we thought...

A team of researchers from the <a href="https://medschool.ucsd.edu/Pages/default.aspx">University of California San Diego School of Medicine</a> have taken a different approach to treating and preventing the parasitic disease malaria. Rather than waiting for the parasite to replicate within a victim’s blood, the team attempted to target the parasite when it initially infects a person’s liver. This new method of treatment could potentially unlock the key for preventing <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dogs-diagnose-malaria/">malaria</a> infection altogether.

Researchers extracted malaria parasites from over one million mosquitos and tested over 500,000 chemical compounds that had the potential to shut down the parasite within a person’s liver. The team was able to narrow down their list to just 631 compounds that hold promise for the development of a malaria prevention drug.

The team’s findings, published December 7th in <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>, have already been made available within the scientific community.

“It's our hope that, since we're not patenting these compounds, many other researchers around the world will take this information and use it in their own labs and countries to drive antimalarial drug development forward," said Elizabeth Winzeler, PhD, professor of pharmacology and drug discovery at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Current malaria drugs only treat the symptoms after a person has become infected with the parasite. These drugs simply block the replication process within in the blood, however, they do not prevent infection nor the transmission of malaria parasites — Plasmodium falciparum or Plasmodium vivax — via mosquito bite.

After finding these 631 promising compounds by way of engineering malaria sporozoites to produce the luciferase enzyme, and then applying certain compounds to see which ones turn the luciferase enzyme off, therefore killing the sporozoite, Winzeler’s team now hopes to figure out how these compounds work to move forward in the drug production. Her team will work alongside members of the <a href="https://www.gatesfoundation.org/What-We-Do/Global-Health/Malaria">Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Malaria Drug Accelerator (MalDA)</a>, an international consortium focused on speeding up drug development.

"It's difficult for many people to consistently sleep under mosquito nets or take a daily pill," Winzeler concluded. "We've developed many other options for things like birth control. Why not malaria? The malaria research community has always been particularly collaborative and willing to share data and resources, and that makes me optimistic that we'll soon get there too."

A new breakthrough malaria prevention drug is just around the corner

A research team is arguing that Alzheimer's is not just one disease, but can actually be divided into six subgroups. The team suggests that this new approach could pave the way for more effective and personalized treatments. 

Currently, there is no cure for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/children-increase-alzheimers-risk/">Alzheimer's</a>, a debilitating disease that affects memory and causes cognitive decline. 

In the United States, 5.7 million people currently live with the disease, and the <a href="https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/facts-figures">Alzheimer's Association</a> projects that by 2050, 14 million people will have it. 

Nineteen researchers across multiple institutions including the <a href="http://www.uwmedicine.org/education">University of Washington School of Medicine</a> found that Alzheimer's was not one disease but could be classified into different groups. The researchers published their findings in a new study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. 

“Alzheimer’s, like breast cancer, is not one disease,” said Shubhabrata Mukherjee, the lead author. “I think a good drug might fail in a clinical trial because not all the subjects have the same kind of Alzheimer’s.”

For the two-year study, the researchers took 4,500 participants across five different studies diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer’s and placed them into groups based on cognitive functioning. 

The average age of the participants was 80, and the researchers reviewed neuropsychological test scores and genetic data to identify biological differences across the groups. Participants were scored on memory, executive functioning, language, and visuospatial functioning. 

Executive functioning describes skills like time management and focusing on a task, and visuospatial functioning refers to how people see and interpret the space around them. 

The researchers then created six different subgroups based on the scores. Each of the groups included participants who had scored lower on one or more categories compared to the others. 

39 percent of the participants belonged to a group where the scores were close together across all four categories. 

The next group was the second largest, and the members of this group had lower memory scores compared to the other categories. 

The researchers also used genome-wide genetic data to find any similarities in gene variants between the groups.

Being able to classify Alzheimer's could create personalized treatments that target specific issues and the research helps explain why treatments and cures for Alzheimer's have thus far been ineffective. 

“The implications are exciting,” said Paul Crane, a corresponding author. “We have found substantial biological differences among cognitively defined subgroups of Alzheimer’s patients.”

In a new study, researchers were able to predict the movements of rodents based on neuron activity in the hippocampus of the brain. 

The hippocampus, located in the brain’s medial temporal lobe, plays an important role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/memories-experiences-organized-brain/">long-term memory and spatial memory</a>, or how people can remember specific locations within their environment. 

Without the hippocampus, you would have a very hard time navigating around familiar streets, knowing where your house is, or remembering how to get to work. 

In 2014, the <a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/2014/press-release/">Nobel Prize </a>was awarded to John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser for their discovery of the brain’s inner positioning system in the hippocampus that makes spatial memory possible. 

Now, expanding on this previous work, researchers from the <a href="https://ist.ac.at/">Institute of Science and Technology Austria</a> conducted a study using rodents to see if it was possible to predict future movements based on how the neurons in the hippocampus responded to the brain’s positioning system. 

The researchers were able to create a “brain map,” which visually showed the decisions being made, according to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">Daily Mail</a>.

“This gives us an insight into what the animal is thinking about space,” Jozsef Csicsvari, the co-author of the study, told the Daily Mail. “We used this concept to understand how rats think during tasks that test their spatial memory.” 

The study was published in the journal Neuron.

The researchers set up an experiment with a maze that had eight arms attached to it, and three of the arms had a reward at the end. As the rats kept going through the maze and picking different arms to go down, memories of which arms had rewards were formed. 

The researchers were able to distinguish two types of spatial memory using this lab set up, reference and working memory. 

In the rats, reference memory recorded which arms had rewards, and working memory kept track of the arms that the rats chose. By working together, reference and working memory helped the rat avoid repeat trips to dead ends without rewards. 

When the rat was placed at the center of the maze, the researchers monitored and recorded the patterns of neuron firing in the inner positioning system cells in the hippocampus, called place cells. The place cell pattern was associated with a route already taken by the rat or an arm of the maze the rat planned to try next. 

When they isolated working memory from reference memory, the researchers were able to link the pattern to the arm the rat would choose next and predict the rat’s movements. 

“The animal is thinking about a different place than the one it is in. In fact, we can predict which arm the rat will enter next.” Csicsvari told the Daily Mail. “When the rat makes a mistake, it replays a random route. Based on the place cells, we can predict that the rat will make a mistake before it commits it.”

Experts at the <a href="http://www.mit.edu/">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT) have unveiled a houseplant that can actually guide itself to receive <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/sunlight-kill-harmful-bacteria/">sunlight</a> whenever necessary. The “cybernetic lifeform,” which is referred to as Elowan, can literally roll itself toward the sunlight.

Sensors in the form of electrodes placed in the plant's stems and also in the ground can be used to monitor the needs of Elowan, and can intensify the natural inclination of the plant to extend its leaves in the direction of the light. Any weak signals transmitted from the electrodes are amplified to send signals to the cyborg, which subsequently moves itself to a more optimal position. 

According to Elowan's creator, Sareen Harpreet, humans robots will not be the only cyborgs of the future. He suggests that “cyborg botany” is potentially more important, as plants could be equipped with technology to help them thrive. 

“As humans, we rely on technological augmentations to tune our fitness to the environment,” Harpreet said on his website. “However, the acceleration of evolution through technology needs to move from a human centric to a holistic nature-centric view.”

The mobile houseplant is likely just the first of many more technologically advanced plants to come. 

“Elowan is an attempt to demonstrate what augmentation of nature could mean,” said Harpreet. “Elowan’s robotic base is a new symbiotic association with a plant. The agency of movement rests with the plant based on its own bio-electrochemical signals, the language interfaced here with the artificial world.”

“These in turn trigger physiological variations such as elongation growth, respiration, and moisture absorption.”

New houseplant can guide itself toward sunlight when necessary

An international team of researchers has identified a new strain of the bacteria that causes <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/global-pandemic-kill-900-million/">plague</a> in the DNA of 5,000-year-old human remains. The bacteria, or Yersinia pestis, may have contributed to the rapid decline of Neolithic European settlements at the beginning of the Bronze Age.

Study senior author Simon Rasmussen is a metagenomics researcher at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english">Technical University of Denmark</a> and the <a href="https://www.ku.dk/english/">University of Copenhagen</a>.

“Plague is maybe one of the deadliest bacteria that has ever existed for humans. And if you think of the word ‘plague,’ it can mean this infection by Y. pestis, but because of the trauma plague has caused in our history, it's also come to refer more generally to any epidemic,” said Rasmussen. “The kind of analyses we do here let us go back through time and look at how this pathogen that's had such a huge effect on us evolved.”


While screening genetic data from ancient humans to investigate the evolutionary history of the plague, the team discovered the new Y. pestis strain in the DNA of a 20-year-old woman who died approximately 5,000 years ago in Sweden. The strain had the same genes that make the pneumonic plague deadly today, and traces of it were found in additional remains from the same grave site.

The new strain of the plague is not only the oldest that has ever been discovered, but is also the closest to the genetic origin of Y. pestis. The strain likely diverged from other strains around 5,700 years ago, which was a time when mega-settlements of 10,000-20,000 inhabitants were becoming common in Europe. This made job specialization, new technology, and trade possible, but these large groups may have also provided a breeding ground for plague. 

“These mega-settlements were the largest settlements in Europe at that time, ten times bigger than anything else. They had people, animals, and stored food close together, and, likely, very poor sanitation. That's the textbook example of what you need to evolve new pathogens,” said Rasmussen.

“We think our data fit. If plague evolved in the mega-settlements, then when people started dying from it, the settlements would have been abandoned and destroyed. This is exactly what was observed in these settlements after 5,500 years ago. Plague would also have started migrating along all the trade routes made possible by wheeled transport, which had rapidly expanded throughout Europe in this period."

The researchers have not yet identified the plague in the genetic materials of the individuals from the mega-settlements where it may have evolved. 

“We haven't really found the smoking gun, but it's partly because we haven't looked yet. And we'd really like to do that, because if we could find plague in those settlements, that would be strong support for this theory,” said Rasmussen.

The research represents an important step toward understanding how plague and other pathogens became deadly. 

“We often think that these superpathogens have always been around, but that's not the case,” explained Rasmussen. “Plague evolved from an organism that was relatively harmless. More recently, the same thing happened with smallpox, malaria, Ebola, and Zika. This process is very dynamic - and it keeps happening. I think it's really interesting to try to understand how we go from something harmless to something extremely virulent.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/">Cell</a>.

Oldest known plague may have caused decline of Neolithic Europeans

Why is it that certain sounds can send a shiver down your spine and make you suddenly fearful? 

In a new study conducted by researchers from the<a href="https://www.cshl.edu/"> Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory</a> examined brain cells in mice to better understand how sounds gain meaning in the brain and why certain sounds elicit a fearful response. 

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications, and the researchers trained a group of mice to associate reward or punishment with a certain tone. 

The team able to implant a small microscope with a lens into the brain of a mouse which showed how the sounds triggered neuron activity in the amygdala of the brain. 

Within the amygdala, sights, sounds, and other experiences are given either positive or negative associations. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amygdala-experience-fear/">amygdala drives our fear response</a> and how we react to experiences and stimuli. 

After implanting the microscope in the trained mice, The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers were able to track and record neuron activity before and after a mouse heard the different tones. 

The researchers noticed drastic changes in neuron activity in the brain, and after a while, a pattern emerged in correlation with either the punishment or reward tone. 

“If you look at the patterns of brain cell activity in the amygdala, you can know whether the animal is expecting a reward or fearing a punishment,” said Bo Li, a co-author of the study. 

First, the neurons in the amygdala fired off randomly, but after enough repetition, the neurons began to form a pattern in anticipation of either a reward or punishment. In turn, the mice also started to anticipate either punishment or reward upon hearing a tone. 

The researchers found that when the tones switched and the sounds that were accompanied by a reward were suddenly followed by punishment, the brain let go of its established pattern and a new pattern formed. 

The results shed light on activity in the amygdala and could help explain how the brain places meaning onto different sounds. 


In the brain, the amygdala continually goes through a process of learning and unlearning. But in people with anxiety or major depression, this process is hindered, and studies that focus on brain activity in the amygdala could help provide better treatments for certain mental health disorders.

The <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/young-adult-deaths-opioid-use/">opioid epidemic</a> in the United States shows no signs of slowing, and with about 130 citizens dying from overdoses each day, officials are searching for new ways to track and intervene in drug use in their communities. Testing municipal wastewater may be an effective new way to see if and how treatment programs are working while giving officials real-time data of drug usage within one area. 

Because most drug use data relies on users self reporting, it’s difficult for officials to put forth anti-drug initiatives without knowing their true outreach. However, Aparna Keshaviah, Sc.M., of <a href="https://www.mathematica-mpr.com/">Mathematica Policy Research</a>, believes that municipal wastewater may be the key to tracking opioid usage and intervention initiatives.

"Cities can use wastewater tests to locate "hot spots" of drug use,” Keshaviah, whose study will be presented at the December 5th 2018 <a href="http://www.sra.org/">Society for Risk Analysis (SRA)</a> Annual Meeting, states. “The method can provide an early warning that drugs are entering a community. Repeated testing over time can show shifts in drug use that reveal how well control policies are working."

Her findings promote prediction rather than reaction to changes in drug use, as do the findings of Sheree Pagsuyoin, of the University of Massachusetts. Pagsuyoin’s study, also being presented at the SRA Annual Meeting, similarly examined the application of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to track community drug use within three regions in the United States.

In Pagsuyoin’s study, wastewater samples were analyzed for the presence of MDMA, cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. The wastewater results were then compared to survey-based data to round out the breadth of drug usage in a specific area. The vast majority of the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/starlight-universe-produced/">universe</a> is made up of dark matter that emits no light or energy, making it impossible to observe and study. Dark energy, or the anti-gravity force that causes the Universe to expand, has also remained a mystery to scientists. 

A groundbreaking new theory from Dr. Jamie Farnes at the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a> e-Research Centre proposes that dark matter and dark energy are essentially interchangeable, and that they are both a fluid substance that contains a negative mass. Dr. Farnes has developed a model that demonstrates what dark matter and dark energy may be like physically. 

“We now think that both dark matter and dark energy can be unified into a fluid which possesses a type of ‘negative gravity,’ repelling all other material around them,” said Dr. Farnes. “Although this matter is peculiar to us, it suggests that our cosmos is symmetrical in both positive and negative qualities.”

The idea of negative matter was previously disregarded because it was believed that this material would become less dense as the Universe expands, which is contrary to the knowledge that the density of dark energy does not thin out over time. 

However, Dr. Farnes has identified conditions that would allow for negative masses to be continuously created. The new model shows that when more and more negative masses are bursting into existence, the negative mass fluid is not diluted as the Universe expands. Instead, it maintains its density, just like dark energy.

“Previous approaches to combining dark energy and dark matter have attempted to modify Einstein's theory of general relativity, which has turned out to be incredibly challenging,” said Dr. Farnes. “This new approach takes two old ideas that are known to be compatible with Einstein's theory - negative masses and matter creation - and combines them together.”

“The outcome seems rather beautiful: dark energy and dark matter can be unified into a single substance, with both effects being simply explainable as positive mass matter surfing on a sea of negative masses.”


The new theory will now be tested with a cutting-edge radio telescope known as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which is the product of an international effort to build the world's largest telescope.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.aanda.org/">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics</a>.

Experts at <a href="https://www.yale.edu/">Yale University</a> are studying brain measurements to predict where people's eyes will move as they view images of natural settings. According to the researchers, a better understanding of the human visual system will help to advance technology driven by <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-protect-elephants/">artificial intelligence</a>, such as autonomous vehicles.

Study co-author Marvin Chun is the Richard M. Colgate Professor of Psychology. He explained, “We are visual beings and knowing how the brain rapidly computes where to look is fundamentally important.”

Eye movement is a very popular research topic, and experts have previously established which direction a gaze will most likely be focused among different scenes of the natural environment. However, the way that the brain coordinates this ability, which is critical for survival, is not entirely understood. 

In a previous experiment based on “mind reading,” Professor Chun's team managed to reconstruct facial images based on MRI brain imaging data alone. 

For the current study, Professor Chun and lead author Thomas P. O'Connell used the same approach to demonstrate that they could predict where people would direct their attention and gaze while looking at natural scenes. They did this by analyzing the brain data with deep convolutional neural networks, which are models that are widely used in artificial intelligence systems.

“The work represents a perfect marriage of neuroscience and data science,” said Professor Chun. “People can see better than AI systems can. Understanding how the brain performs its complex calculations is an ultimate goal of neuroscience and benefits AI efforts.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

There has been a long, controversial debate about the existence of cardiac stem cells that could repair tissue and muscle damage after a myocardial infarction or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-the-weather-gets-colder-heart-attacks-get-more-lethal/">heart attack</a>.

Both animals and humans have stem cells that help repair tissue damage by rapidly producing lost tissue cells. For decades, researchers have been hunting the elusive cardiac stem cells which, if found, could offer a lifeline for patients that suffer a myocardial infarction. 

Some research groups claimed that they have found cardiac stem cells, but upon further inspection, these claims always proved inconclusive, and the existence of cardiac stem cells has remained heavily debated.

Researchers from several academic institutions across Europe have finally settled the matter once and for all in a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

The researchers looked for cardiac stem cells in mice based on the most fundamental definition of stem cell function, which is a cell that can replace lost or damaged tissue through cell division in the heart. 

A cell-by-cell map of the dividing cardiac cells both before and after a mouse experienced a heart attack was created for the study. While the researchers were able to identify many different dividing cells, none of them built new heart muscle. 

The researchers conclude that cardiac stem cells simply do not exist and any lost heart muscle after a heart attack cannot be replaced.

While the findings are certainly disappointing, the researchers also found that scar tissue produced after a heart attack plays an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of the damaged heart and lost muscle function.

Creating miniature replicas of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/earth-supercontinent/">Earth</a> may sound like a futuristic, almost God-like power, but it’s something that scientists around the world attempt to do on a daily basis. These researchers are looking for the primordial ingredients that created the building blocks for life, and their work is about more that just creating worlds.

Today, a significant amount of origin-of-life research is focused on one specific building block: RNA. Although some scientists believe life formed from simpler molecules and only later evolved RNA, some search for evidence to either prove or disprove that RNA formed first. 

RNA is a complex molecule that both stores and transmits genetic information and helps synthesize the proteins that make us living beings. In the effort to verify this “RNA World Hypothesis,” researchers are met with two challenges. First, they need to identify which ingredients reacted to create RNA’s four nucleotides – adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil (A, G, C, and U). Second, they must determine how RNA stored and copied genetic information in order to replicate itself.

In this quest, scientists have made major progress finding precursors to C and U – but A and G remain ever elusive. But a recent study published in <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">PNAS</a> by Jack W. Szostak, a professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a>, suggests that RNA could have started with a different set of nucleotide bases. Rather than guanine, RNA may have been built with a surrogate called inosine.

“Our study suggests that the earliest forms of life (with A, U, C, and I) may have arisen from a different set of nucleobases than those found in modern life (A, U, C, and G),” says Seohyun Kim, a graduate student and first author of the paper.

They made this discovery while testing whether 8-oxo-purine RNA – which could be made with materials available on primeval Earth – could replicate efficiently. It turned out that the 8-oxo-purine RNA still performs, but loses the speed and accuracy needed to copy itself. But as the researchers compared it against a control – inosine – they found that inosine enabled RNA to replicate with high speed a little error.

“We propose that inosine could have served as a surrogate for guanosine in the early emergence of life,” the team concludes. This discovery could provide some of the evidence needed to support the RNA world hypothesis. However, scientists could find that early Earth had many paths for the growth of life. Ultimately, it seems that the search for life continues.

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.

The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
