<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Far below the Atlantic waves, an unusual site known as the Lost City fascinates scientists and casual observers. It consists of towering <a href="http://www.lostcity.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbonate structures</a> in a hydrothermal field, at a depth of&nbsp;750 - 900 meters (2,460 - 2,950 feet) below the sea surface. </p>



<p>These carbonate vents, that rise 60 meters (180 feet) above the Atlantis Massif pump out basic molecules that some researchers believe are key to understanding how life began on our planet.</p>



<p>Investigations of these vents suggest the presence of chemical pathways that could have helped living systems form when Earth was still very young. </p>



<p>Many suspect that such conditions also exist on distant worlds, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-detect-hidden-magnetic-signals-in-earths-oceans/">hidden oceans</a> might mirror this remarkable environment and spark similar biochemical processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-lost-city-vents-matter">Why Lost City vents matter</h2>



<p><a href="https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/edu/oceanage/05kelley/welcome.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deborah Kelley</a>, a professor at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>, has studied this site to learn how simple molecules emerge from deep-sea conditions. </p>



<p>Her research draws on previous work by collaborators at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (<a href="https://www.whoi.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHOI</a>), and her findings suggest a link between the natural chemical reactions in the vents, and the building blocks of life</p>



<p>Among the most significant chemical components at Lost City are hydrocarbons, which are molecules made of hydrogen and carbon. </p>



<p>These can form when seawater interacts with certain rocks, and can generate substances that may have paved the way for making the first cell membranes and other vital structures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-lost-city">Inside the lost city</h2>



<p>Researchers <a href="http://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1151194" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> that chemicals generated by the vents in this undersea terrain support microbial life that is capable of thriving without sunlight. </p>



<p>The chemical energy from reactions between water and mantle rock produces hydrogen, which boosts unique microbial communities that survive in alkaline fluids.</p>



<p>These microbes feed on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-previously-unknown-sources-of-methane-production/">methane</a> and other chemicals, meaning that these ecosystems are powered by geology rather than photosynthesis. </p>



<p>Scientists are intrigued by how organisms adapt to conditions similar to what may have existed on early Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shaping-origin-theories">Shaping origin theories</h2>



<p>Some <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11541234/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scientists</a>, including those at the University of Washington, see a possible bridge between ancient hydrothermal systems and the start of cellular life. </p>



<p>This concept proposes that energetic fluids in such vents might drive the gradual assembly of amino acids and simple proteins.</p>



<p>Early Earth likely had large stretches of mantle exposed on the ocean floor. That arrangement could have given rise to the right chemical balance for forming organic molecules from inorganic ones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-planetary-parallels">Unexpected planetary parallels</h2>



<p>Some researchers believe that these vents have analogs on other celestial bodies, such as Saturn’s moon <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-could-survive-near-surface-europa-enceladus-moons/">Enceladus</a>. </p>



<p>Beneath its icy exterior lies liquid water, and if water-rock interactions there mimic what happens at Lost City, life-supporting chemistry might be possible.</p>



<p>Jupiter’s moon <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-will-search-for-signs-of-life-on-jupiters-icy-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa</a> may host a similar setup under its frozen shell. Detecting any evidence of hydrothermal venting on those worlds would open fresh debates about whether life is more widespread in our Solar System than once assumed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-a-natural-treasure">Protecting a natural treasure</h2>



<p>Reports indicate that deep-sea mining efforts could threaten this remarkable pristine habitat by disturbing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-ocean-holds-carbon-hidden-mechanisms-revealed/">ocean sediments</a> and water chemistry. </p>



<p>Although current efforts target specific minerals, any disruptions might affect the delicate balance that allows organisms to flourish in the Lost City vents.</p>



<p>Some scientists urge international organizations to <a href="https://mpa.highseasalliance.org/the-lost-city" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preserve</a> areas like Lost City for future study. If such sites vanish or degrade, humanity might lose vital clues about how life's earliest processes could unfold under extreme conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fresh-directions-in-exploration">Fresh directions in exploration</h2>



<p>Oceanographers are developing advanced vehicles to reach deeper vents and gather high-resolution data. </p>



<p>These instruments might one day map other hidden carbonate towers, shedding light on places where chemical gradients resemble those that spark the origins of life.</p>



<p>Teams also study the genetic makeup of organisms found in this extreme environment, searching for enzymes that endure harsh temperatures and pH levels. </p>



<p>Such enzymes might eventually help industries design more efficient processes or pave the way for medical breakthroughs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-to-the-future">Looking to the future</h2>



<p>“The generation of hydrocarbons was the very first step; otherwise Earth would have remained lifeless,” said <a href="https://schmidtocean.org/person/giora-proskurowski/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Giora Proskurowski</a>, a researcher involved in these <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/feature/lost-city-pumps-life-essential-chemicals-at-rates-unseen-at-typical-black-smokers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">investigations</a>. </p>



<p>He highlighted the need to consider non-biological carbon molecules as a source of energy for microbes. </p>



<p>Such statements emphasize the importance of hydrothermal vents in debates about how life might emerge. Observations at Lost City offer a living laboratory where chemistry, geology, and biology cross paths in unexpected ways.</p>



<p>Tomorrow’s missions to uncharted ocean floors and distant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/">moon oceans</a> may confirm whether such geological processes are ubiquitous. </p>



<p>If they are, we might learn that life’s raw potential is woven into far more corners of the cosmos than once imagined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-research">More research</h2>



<p>Soon, new research expeditions aim to probe deeper into the labyrinthine vents, searching for clues about catalytic processes that might underlie early metabolism. </p>



<p>By studying the chemical signatures in situ and analyzing how microbes harness available energy, scientists hope to piece together a more complete story of how inorganic matter could have taken that monumental leap toward becoming living cells.</p>



<p>There is a growing belief that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-northwest-ecosystems-are-being-tested-by-climate-change/">Earth’s ecosystems</a>, from scorching desert plains to icy polar seas, are connected by the same fundamental chemical threads found at Lost City. </p>



<p>This is a powerful reminder that life can flourish under conditions once deemed too extreme. That ongoing resilience invites continued exploration. There’s so much yet to be discovered.</p>

'Lost City' reveals chemical pathways that could explain the origin of life

<p>Deep below the ocean’s surface, underwater mountains rise from the seafloor, creating landscapes few have explored. These seamounts, often teeming with life, stand in stark contrast to the vast, open ocean surrounding them. </p>



<p>New research has revealed that these hidden peaks hold far more predators than the open sea, drawing large numbers of sharks and other marine hunters.</p>



<p>A study led by the University of Exeter and the Ascension Island Government found that seamounts in the South Atlantic Ocean support astonishing levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axial-seamount-large-underwater-volcano-off-us-coast-will-likely-erupt-in-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a>. </p>



<p>The research focused on three seamounts near Ascension Island, uncovering why these locations serve as prime gathering spots for predators. </p>



<p>Scientists discovered that shallow seamounts, with peaks less than 100 meters below the surface, were particularly rich in marine life, including sharks and tuna.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-do-seamounts-attract-predators">Why do seamounts attract predators?</h2>



<p>Scientists have long suspected that seamounts act as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-like-marine-life-found-on-underwater-mountains-includes-100-new-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hubs for marine life</a>. Some of these underwater mountains create nutrient-rich upwellings that boost phytoplankton growth, which forms the foundation of ocean food chains.</p>



<p> However, this new study found no evidence of such upwellings at the seamounts near Ascension Island. Instead, the researchers observed a different pattern. Marine life increased at every level of the food web, even without a surge in phytoplankton.</p>



<p>Zooplankton, which consume phytoplankton, were twice as abundant near the seamounts as in the open ocean. Sharks, at the top of the food chain, were 41 times more numerous than in surrounding waters.</p>



<p>“Seamounts have been likened to oases of life in the comparative deserts of the open ocean,” said Dr. Sam Weber from the <a href="https://ecologyconservation.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Centre for Ecology and Conservation</a> at Exeter’s Penryn Campus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-seamounts-attract-predators">Why seamounts attract predators </h2>



<p>Several factors explain why seamounts attract so many predators. The underwater peaks interrupt ocean currents, pushing smaller organisms into concentrated areas. This creates an easy feeding ground for fish, which, in turn, draws larger predators.</p>



<p>Dr. Weber and his team suggest that filter-feeding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seamounts-underwater-mountains-impact-ocean-circulation-climate-surprising-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> benefit from food being swept over the seamount peaks, making prey easier to catch.</p>



<p>The peaks may also prevent prey from escaping into deeper waters, effectively trapping them in a confined space. This allows predators to hunt with greater success, making these locations an efficient source of food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seamounts-are-social-hubs">Seamounts are social hubs </h2>



<p>Beyond hunting opportunities, seamounts appear to serve another function. Researchers found that some predators use these underwater mountains as social meeting points. </p>



<p>Sharks and other species may gather to interact, mate, or rest before returning to the open ocean.</p>



<p>“Also, some predators appear to use seamounts as ‘hubs’ to gather, socialise, mate or rest, and as a base to return to after hunting in the open ocean. This may lead to more top predators on seamounts than you would expect based on the amount of food available,” Dr. Weber explained.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that seamounts are more than just feeding zones. They may be essential gathering sites for marine predators, helping them interact and maintain social structures within their populations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-species-found-at-seamounts">Species found at seamounts</h2>



<p>The experts found that certain species consistently gather at seamounts. Among them are Galapagos and silky sharks, along with yellowfin and bigeye tuna.</p>



<p>Some individuals remained at a single seamount for long periods, while others traveled between seamounts up to 80 kilometers apart.</p>



<p>The researchers also noted a “halo” effect around the seamounts, where marine life remained abundant up to five kilometers into the surrounding ocean. This suggests that the influence of seamounts extends beyond their immediate area, affecting a much larger ecosystem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-for-seamount-ecosystems">Conservation for seamount ecosystems</h2>



<p>The seamounts included in the study fall within the <a href="https://www.ascensionmpa.ac" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ascension Island Marine Protected Area</a>. This vast 445,000 square kilometer zone is free from large-scale commercial fishing and seabed mining, ensuring that marine life can thrive without human interference.</p>



<p>“Our results reinforce the conservation significance of shallow seamounts for many top predators,” Dr. Weber said.</p>



<p>“This research also offers fundamental insights into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-oceans-are-rapidly-changing-colors-matching-climate-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seamounts</a>’ role as activity hubs and oases for marine species and shows how these remarkable habitats influence the oceans that surround them.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-deeper-understanding-of-seamounts">A deeper understanding of seamounts</h2>



<p>Despite their importance, seamounts remain one of the least studied ecosystems in the ocean. This research sheds light on the critical role they play in supporting marine predators and influencing broader oceanic food webs. </p>



<p>Understanding these underwater structures is essential for ocean conservation, as protecting seamounts could help maintain predator populations and overall marine biodiversity.</p>



<p>The study gathered data from a National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition aboard the British Antarctic Survey research vessel <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/polar-operations/sites-and-facilities/facility/rrs-james-clark-ross/rrs-james-clark-ross-computing-facilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RRS James Clark Ross</a>. Funding came from a European Union BEST grant and the UK government’s <a href="https://www.darwininitiative.org.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Darwin Initiative</a>. </p>



<p>As scientists continue to explore these hidden underwater worlds, seamounts may reveal even more secrets about the complex relationships that shape life in the ocean.</p>

<p>To prevent this substantial increase in electricity usage from fuelling climate change, numerous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-utilities-may-be-100-percent-renewable-energy-by-2060/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable energy</a> sources need to join forces. Solar energy has long been seen as a vital player in this ensemble. </p>



<p>Silicon-based solar panels have been in the commercial sphere for over three decades. However, their life cycle is nearing its end, leading to a significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electronic-waste-is-growing-five-times-faster-than-recycling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">waste problem</a>.</p>



<p>Study lead author Xun Xiao is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at <a href="https://liu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Linköping University</a>.</p>



<p>“There is currently no efficient technology to deal with the waste of silicon panels. That’s why old solar panels end up in the landfill. Huge mountains of electronic waste that you can’t do anything with," said Xiao.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emerging-solar-cell-technologies">Emerging solar cell technologies </h2>



<p>The researchers are focused on developing flagship solar cell technologies that inherently accommodate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-trash-to-treasure-e-waste-is-a-literal-gold-mine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recycling</a>.</p>



<p>“We need to take recycling into consideration when developing emerging solar cell technologies. If we don’t know how to recycle them, maybe we shouldn’t put them on the market at all," noted study co-author Feng Gao, a professor of optoelectronics.</p>



<p>Perovskite solar cells are cost-effective and simple to produce. They are also lightweight, flexible, and transparent.</p>



<p>With a potential 25% efficiency in converting solar energy into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tech-uses-chicken-feathers-to-generate-clean-electricity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electricity</a>, perovskite solar cells rival modern silicon-based counterparts.</p>



<p>“There are many companies that want to get perovskite solar cells on the market right now, but we’d like to avoid another landfill. In this project, we’ve developed a method where all parts can be reused in a new perovskite solar cell without compromising performance in the new one," noted study co-author Niansheng Xu.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recycling-perovskite-with-water">Recycling perovskite with water</h2>



<p>Even though the power-packed perovskite solar cells have a shorter lifespan than silicon panels, it is crucial that their recycling process is both productive and environmentally benign.</p>



<p>A small amount of lead, vital for high efficiency, is present in these cells. This creates the need for a well-functioning recycling procedure.</p>



<p>Existing methods to disassemble perovskite solar cells often require a toxic, environmentally damaging, and potentially carcinogenic compound present in paint solvents. </p>



<p>However, the experts at Linköping University have ingeniously replaced it with water. The result? High-quality perovskite recycled from the water solution, without compromising efficiency or performance.</p>



<p>This breakthrough not only eliminates hazardous waste but also simplifies the recycling process, making large-scale implementation more feasible.</p>



<p>“We can recycle everything - covering glasses, electrodes, perovskite layers and also the charge transport layer," said Xiao.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-solar-economy">Sustainable solar economy </h2>



<p>With plans to develop this method for larger scale use, the scientists are optimistic that perovskite solar cells will play a crucial role in future energy supply, once the proper infrastructure is established.</p>



<p>"We demonstrate that our recycling strategy can greatly alleviate the environmental burden of waste perovskite modules, especially for the human toxicity and resource depletion impacts, and also reduce the levelized cost of electricity," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"This study demonstrates unique opportunities of holistic perovskite solar module recycling - which are barely possible for other PV technologies - for a sustainable and circular solar economy in the future."</p>

<p>Coral reefs are known for their vibrant colors and abundant marine life. They shelter countless fish and invertebrate species, stabilize coastlines, and supply vital resources for communities.</p>



<p>Scientists have speculated whether these important habitats underwent dramatic shifts in the distant past. A new investigation has unearthed a major interruption in coral growth in the Gulf of Eilat, raising new questions about coral resilience.</p>



<p>This region, at the northern tip of the Red Sea, is home to corals that tolerate warmer waters than many other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-pollution-is-transforming-nightlife-on-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reef systems</a>. Their apparent resilience has made the area a favored spot for studying how reefs cope with changing conditions.</p>



<p>The latest findings come from a team led by Professor Adi Torfstein of <a href="https://en.huji.ac.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hebrew University</a> and Professor Oren Levy of <a href="https://www.biu.ac.il/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bar-Ilan University</a>, in collaboration with several other international scientists.</p>



<p>The research opens a window into the historical factors that have shaped coral life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-coral-reefs-matter">Why coral reefs matter</h2>



<p>Reefs are not just pretty landscapes. They play a role in the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/syr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon balance</a> of the oceans. Coral reefs are also biodiversity hotspots that support tourism and feed local fisheries.</p>



<p>Some species that thrive in reef environments form the basis of drug discovery. These organisms produce compounds that could one day lead to breakthroughs in treatments for human diseases.</p>



<p>Furthermore, coral skeletons serve as natural archives, preserving details about past water temperatures and nutrient levels. </p>



<p>By sampling these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-reefs-may-not-adapt-quickly-enough-to-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">structures</a>, researchers can piece together long-term climate shifts that might otherwise go unnoticed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pause-in-coral-growth">Pause in coral growth </h2>



<p>The researchers found that there was a hiatus in coral growth between 4,400 and 1,000 years before 1950. The corals on certain reefs stopped growing for several thousand years.</p>



<p>The researchers suggest that a mix of tectonic (Earth’s crust movement) and glacio-eustatic (sea-level fluctuation due to ice changes) forces lowered the water level in this region. </p>



<p>Similar patterns were noted in other parts of the globe, hinting at a larger climate trend.</p>



<p>Corals in certain deeper zones survived and, when the sea rose again, they repopulated the reefs in shallower areas where other corals had died out. This rebound demonstrates how a single interruption might not eliminate a reef forever.</p>



<p>Most striking was the finding that this standstill persisted for nearly three millennia, which is a significant stretch in geological terms. </p>



<p>The researchers believe the pause in coral growth coincided with a period of global cooling, which reduced sea levels enough to disrupt reef expansion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-threats-to-coral-reefs">Future threats to coral reefs</h2>



<p>Coral <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/coral_bleach.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bleaching</a> events have become more frequent in the past few decades, and have often been linked to the presence of warmer waters. Some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-bleaching-has-reached-catastrophic-levels-on-the-great-barrier-reef/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reefs</a> bounce back, but others suffer long-term harm, especially if pollution or destructive fishing adds stress to the situation.</p>



<p>Ocean <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/acidification.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">acidification</a> is another growing concern, as shifting pH levels can dissolve coral skeletons faster than they can regenerate. This chemical imbalance makes it tougher for new corals to build their stony foundations.</p>



<p>"Understanding how reefs have responded to past sea-level changes helps us predict their future resilience and informs conservation strategies," noted Dr. Torfstein.</p>



<p>"While our research shows that coral communities can recover after major disruptions, today’s climate crisis presents unprecedented challenges that demand urgent action."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-ancient-corals">Studying ancient corals</h2>



<p>To investigate the environmental conditions in ancient times, the team drilled coral cores up to ten feet deep into the seafloor. </p>



<p>Each layer in these samples contains evidence about the salinity, temperature, and ecological conditions at the time the coral skeleton was formed.</p>



<p>By comparing layers from different time periods, the researchers identified distinct phases of coral growth. </p>



<p>One of the biggest revelations was a shift in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/carbon-isotopes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon isotopes</a> over recent centuries, suggesting increased human impact on local waters.</p>



<p>The approach of drilling and analyzing such extensive coral reef samples had been rarely applied in this region. It provided a way to see how these reefs evolved over the past 10,000 years, capturing both abrupt changes and gradual trends in the environmental indicators.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-from-ancient-corals">Learning from ancient corals</h2>



<p>As scientists build on these findings, they understand more about the broader ocean changes that can happen over thousands of years. </p>

<p>Local communities in Eilat rely on healthy reefs for tourism and fishing, which raises the stakes for successful conservation. </p>

<p>Scientists are constantly searching for ways to improve crop yields, enhance food quality, and speed up plant breeding. Traditional methods take years, sometimes decades, to create new crop varieties with better genetic traits. </p>



<p>However, researchers at the University of Queensland (<a href="https://www.uq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UQ</a>) have introduced a remarkable technique that could change the future of agriculture.</p>



<p>For the first time, the experts have successfully delivered genetic material into plants through their roots. This approach, detailed in the journal <em>Nature Plants</em>, offers a faster and more efficient way to modify plants. </p>



<p>By using nanoparticles to transport synthetic mRNA, the researchers have opened new possibilities for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-technology-will-accelerate-the-pace-of-plant-species-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural advancements</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nanoparticles-carry-genetic-material-in-plants">Nanoparticles carry genetic material in plants</h2>



<p>Professor Bernard Carroll from UQ’s <a href="https://scmb.uq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences</a> explained how this technology can help fine-tune plant genes. He highlighted the slow and expensive nature of traditional breeding and genetic modification methods.</p>



<p>"Traditional plant breeding and genetic modification take many generations to produce a new crop variety, which is time-consuming and expensive," said Professor Carroll.</p>



<p>The research team has developed a way to introduce nanoparticles into plant roots. These nanoparticles, initially created for vaccine and cancer treatment delivery in animals, have now been repurposed for plant genetic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-use-dna-duplication-to-increase-their-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modification</a>. </p>



<p>Professor Gordon Xu’s group at UQ developed these nanoparticles, which offer a promising method for introducing beneficial traits into plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-getting-past-tough-plant-cell-walls">Getting past tough plant cell walls</h2>



<p>Unlike human or animal cells, plant cells have rigid walls that make genetic modifications challenging. The research team tackled this problem by coating the nanoparticles with a special protein. </p>



<p>The protein softened the tough plant cell walls, allowing the nanoparticles to penetrate and deliver genetic material directly into the cells.</p>



<p>"The protein coating helped the nanoparticle break through the cell walls to deliver a synthetic mRNA cargo into plants for the first time," said Professor Carroll.</p>



<p>This technique allows scientists to introduce specific genetic instructions into plants. The mRNA molecules serve as messengers, guiding the plant cells to produce desired proteins. </p>



<p>The researchers tested their method on multiple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-climates-force-plants-to-compete-with-each-other/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant species</a>, including Arabidopsis, a model plant closely related to canola and cabbage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-movement-of-genetic-material-within-plants">Movement of genetic material within plants</h2>



<p>One of the most surprising findings of the study was how the nanoparticles moved within the plant. Instead of releasing their genetic cargo into a single cell, the nanoparticles traveled with water, spreading the mRNA throughout the plant.</p>



<p>"It was surprising that rather than delivering all of its load in the first cell it entered, the nanoparticle traveled with water through the plant distributing the mRNA as it went," said Professor Carroll.</p>



<p>The unexpected movement of nanoparticles opens exciting possibilities for plant genetic modification. If scientists can control and refine this process, they could develop <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-plant-can-cause-severe-burns-and-dna-damage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crops</a> with improved traits much more quickly than before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faster-alternative-to-traditional-breeding">Faster alternative to traditional breeding</h2>



<p>The ability to modify plant genes quickly could revolutionize agriculture. Traditional breeding methods require years of careful crossbreeding to achieve desirable traits such as better flavor, increased yield, or improved resistance to pests. </p>



<p>Genetic modification using conventional methods also involves long and complex processes.</p>



<p>"With further research, we could target an issue with a crop such as flavor or quality and have a new variety without the need for a decade of cross breeding or genetic modification," noted Professor Carroll.</p>



<p>This new nanoparticle-based technique provides a faster alternative. The mRNA delivered into the plant does not permanently alter the plant’s DNA. Instead, it temporarily instructs the plant to produce a beneficial protein and then degrades naturally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-parallel-with-mrna-vaccines">A parallel with mRNA vaccines</h2>



<p>The way this technology works is similar to mRNA vaccines in humans. Just as mRNA vaccines instruct human cells to produce a protein that stimulates the immune system before breaking down, the synthetic mRNA delivered into plants expresses a protein and then disappears.</p>



<p>"Similar to how an mRNA vaccine produces a protein to stimulate the immune system and then degrades away, the mRNA we deliver into plants is expressed transiently and then disappears," said Professor Carroll.</p>



<p>This characteristic makes the technique more adaptable and safer for rapid agricultural improvements. Scientists could use it to introduce temporary changes in plants without affecting their genetic makeup permanently.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-developing-plant-genetics-research">Developing plant genetics research</h2>



<p>The potential applications of this technology extend beyond academic research. </p>



<p>The University of Queensland has already patented the technique through its commercialization company, UniQuest. They are now looking for partners to help further develop and apply this technology in real-world agriculture.</p>



<p>The research team included experts such as Professor Zhi Pin (Gordon) Xu and Dr. Jiaxi Yong from UQ’s <a href="https://aibn.uq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology</a> and the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation.</p>

<p>These tiny, plant-like organisms are responsible for producing nearly half of the oxygen we breathe, making them vital to life on the planet.</p>



<p>Beyond oxygen production, phytoplankton form the base of the marine food chain. Many ocean creatures, from small fish to massive whales, rely on them for survival. </p>



<p>Phytoplankton also act as natural regulators of climate by absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to reduce the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-draining-nutrients-from-the-oceans-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effects of global warming</a>.</p>



<p>Despite their significance, much remains unknown about how individual phytoplankton function and react to environmental changes. Scientists have struggled to study them in detail due to the limitations of traditional research methods.</p>

<p>The system relies on a specially designed microscope that captures detailed images of phytoplankton as they travel through tiny channels. By analyzing the different colors of light emitted by each cell, experts can obtain valuable information about how efficiently the organism processes light for energy.</p>



<p>Focusing research on individual phytoplankton rather than entire groups will provide deeper insights into their unique adaptations in the ocean.</p>

<p>The depths of the ocean have always held secrets, but scientists never expected to find something quite like this. Researchers analyzing deep-sea samples from the Pacific Ocean have discovered an unexplained surge in radiation, one that dates back more than 10 million years.</p>



<p>While it might sound like the plot of a science fiction movie, this anomaly is real. It involves an unusual spike in beryllium-10, a rare radioactive isotope. </p>

<p>However, something unusual happened around 10 million years ago. When researchers examined samples from that era, they found that beryllium-10 levels were nearly double what they had expected. This unexpected increase suggests that Earth experienced an event that dramatically altered its exposure to this isotope.</p>

<p>In this scenario, the shift in currents could have concentrated beryllium-10 in the Pacific rather than spreading it evenly across the seabed. This would explain the unexpected increase in radiation levels found in these samples.</p>



<p>If this theory is correct, further research could uncover similar shifts in isotope distribution in other regions. However, the presence of this anomaly worldwide would suggest a much more dramatic cause - one that came from space.</p>

<p>Another potential explanation involves Earth temporarily losing its protective heliosphere. The heliosphere is a magnetic shield created by the Sun, which helps protect the planet from interstellar radiation. </p>



<p>If Earth passed through a dense cloud of interstellar material, the heliosphere may have weakened, allowing more cosmic rays to reach the atmosphere and generate excess beryllium-10.</p>



<p>If this theory is correct, then scientists should find similar spikes in beryllium-10 levels across the globe, not just in the Pacific Ocean. This would provide strong evidence that Earth experienced a dramatic cosmic event 10 million years ago.</p>

<p>Dr. Koll sees the potential for this discovery to change that. “For periods spanning millions of years, such cosmogenic time markers do not yet exist. However, this beryllium anomaly has the potential to serve as such a marker,” he said.</p>



<p>If future studies confirm that this anomaly appears in multiple regions, it could provide a new tool for synchronizing geological records. Scientists studying ancient climate changes, mass extinctions, or shifts in Earth's magnetic field could use this spike as a global reference point.</p>

<p>A new study from Tel Aviv University has uncovered a surprising effect of city life on bats - urban-dwelling bats give birth significantly earlier than those in rural areas.</p>



<p>This research is the first of its kind to establish a link between urban environments and the timing of birth in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-surf-the-winds-of-storms-during-migration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a>. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that factors such as warmer temperatures and an abundance of food influence when bats reproduce. These discoveries could have broader implications for understanding how other species are adapting to human-made landscapes.</p>

<p>"These conditions allow urban <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bat-conservation-benefits-human-health-and-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a> to cope better with harsh winters and start their reproductive cycles earlier. This enables females to give birth earlier in the season, increasing their chances of becoming pregnant again within the same year."</p>



<p>The availability of food also plays a crucial role. In cities, ornamental fruit trees provide a consistent supply of food, while rural bats must rely on seasonal availability. This steady diet may allow urban bats to maintain better overall health, supporting more frequent and earlier reproduction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pregnancy-duration-of-urban-bats">Pregnancy duration of urban bats</h2>



<p>One of the most interesting findings of the study is the uncertainty about why urban bats give birth earlier. Researchers are unsure whether these bats are shortening their pregnancies or if they are simply conceiving earlier than rural bats. </p>

<p>Researchers at the University of Galway recently introduced a collection of 247,092 computer models of these bacteria, marking the largest digital microbe library ever created.</p>



<p>Their project, known as APOLLO, provides a fresh way to study the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-play-a-big-role-in-shaping-the-health-of-rivers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome</a> without relying on slow laboratory work.</p>



<p>This ambitious effort is led by Professor Ines Thiele, a principal investigator with <a href="https://www.ucc.ie/en/apc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">APC Microbiome Ireland</a>, housed at University College Cork.</p>



<p>She also directs the University of Galway’s Digital Metabolic Twin Centre, where this vast model collection was born.</p>

<p>“APOLLO marks a major milestone in personalized microbiome modeling on a global scale,” said Dr. Cyrille Thinnes, project scientist at the University of Galway. </p>

<p>“The human microbiome is a vital player in health and disease, dynamically interacting with its host,” explained Professor Thiele. She emphasized that these digital models allow a closer look at how microbes might respond to different interventions.</p>

<p>For billions of years, Earth has been a planet without ice caps. Vast oceans, lush forests, and volcanic landscapes have dominated its surface. The ice-covered world we see today is an exception rather than the rule. </p>



<p>According to a new study by the University of Leeds, the cool conditions that allowed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-patterns-point-to-rapid-melting-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> caps to form are rare in Earth's history.</p>



<p>Scientists have long wondered why Earth has spent most of its past in a "greenhouse" state, free from ice at the poles. In this study, the researchers found that our current climate resulted from a rare combination of multiple factors.</p>



<p>Without this lucky coincidence, Earth would have remained warm and ice-free, as it has been for most of its existence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-unusual-cold-state">Earth’s unusual cold state</h2>



<p>Scientists have suggested several explanations over the years. Some believe that lower volcanic activity reduced the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, leading to cooling. </p>



<p>Others argue that forests played a role by absorbing more carbon from the air. Another idea points to chemical reactions between CO2 and certain rocks that removed carbon from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>These explanations made sense individually, but no single process seemed strong enough to push Earth into a long-lasting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> age. That is where the new study introduced an innovative approach. </p>



<p>To understand what caused the shift from a warm planet to an ice-covered one, the researchers examined past cold intervals.</p>



<p>The team used a long-term 3D climate model, developed at the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>, to test all these processes together. This type of "Earth Evolution Model" had only recently become possible due to advances in computing power.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-factors-aligned-for-ice-caps">Climate factors aligned for ice caps</h2>



<p>The results of the study were clear. No single factor caused Earth to become an ice-covered planet. Instead, a combination of processes had to occur at the same time. </p>



<p>It was only through the right mix of reduced volcanic activity, increased carbon absorption, and specific land conditions that the planet cooled enough for ice caps to form.</p>



<p>Study lead author Dr. Andrew Meredith emphasized the significance of this finding.</p>



<p>“We now know that the reason we live on an Earth with ice caps - rather than an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drastic-warming-will-transform-the-arctic-beyond-recognition/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice-free planet</a> - is due to a coincidental combination of very low rates of global volcanism, and highly dispersed continents with big mountains, which allow for lots of global rainfall and therefore amplify reactions that remove carbon from the atmosphere,” he said.</p>



<p>This means that Earth's current ice-covered state is not something that happens naturally or regularly. The planet’s usual condition is much warmer, with high levels of atmospheric CO2.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-natural-preference-for-warmth">A natural preference for warmth</h2>



<p>The study also sheds light on how Earth avoids extreme glaciation. In the distant past, the planet experienced rare periods of complete ice coverage, known as "snowball Earth" events. </p>



<p>These periods were devastating, with ice stretching across nearly all land and oceans. However, such events were extremely rare.</p>



<p>According to Dr. Meredith, the findings suggest that Earth's natural climate system works against extreme freezing.</p>



<p>“We think this general tendency towards a warm climate has helped prevent devastating 'snowball Earth' global glaciations, which have only occurred very rarely and have therefore helped life to continue to prosper,” he said.</p>



<p>This preference for warmth allowed life to thrive without being trapped in permanent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-ice-caps-changing-earths-rotation-need-negative-leap-second/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a>. While temporary cooling events occurred, the overall trend favored a high-CO2 world with no ice caps.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-ice-caps-may-not-return">Earth’s ice caps may not return </h2>



<p>Professor Benjamin Mills, who supervised the project, pointed out the study’s relevance to modern climate discussions. He warned against assuming that Earth will naturally return to colder conditions, as some might hope.</p>



<p>“There is an important message, which is that we should not expect the Earth to always return to a cold state as it was in the pre-industrial age,” he said.</p>



<p>“Earth’s current ice-covered state is not typical for the planet’s history, but our current global society relies on it."</p>



<p>“We should do everything we can to preserve it, and we should be careful with assumptions that cold climates will return if we drive excessive warming before stopping emissions. Over its long history, the Earth likes it hot, but our human society does not.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenge-of-a-changing-climate">Challenge of a changing climate</h2>



<p>The study highlights a difficult truth. While humans depend on a stable, ice-covered world, Earth itself does not. </p>



<p>The conditions that allowed ice caps to form resulted from a rare set of circumstances that will not automatically repeat themselves. If human activity pushes global temperatures higher, we cannot rely on natural processes to bring them back down.</p>



<p>The research serves as a reminder that Earth's climate system is more fragile than it appears. A return to a warmer world may be the planet’s default state, but for human civilization, it would be a disaster. The findings emphasize the need to protect the current climate rather than assume it will correct itself.</p>



<p>As the planet faces rising temperatures, this study provides a crucial perspective. Earth has spent most of its existence without ice caps, and without action, it may return to that state far sooner than expected.</p>

<p>Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
