<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>The recent detection of a&nbsp;cosmic explosion by the Einstein Probe is stirring excitement among space watchers everywhere. Early last year, the probe's Wide-field X-ray Telescope spotted a mysterious X-ray burst that defies the usual patterns.</p>



<p>The strange event lasted over 15 minutes before fading from view. Astronomers suspect it could reshape theories on how these cosmic blasts begin.</p>



<p>Yuan Liu is an expert in the National Astronomical Observatories at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAO, CAS) and first author on a new paper describing the observation.</p>



<p>“It was really good to see the algorithm working fine for this event,” explained Liu, who also designed the onboard software that flagged this outburst.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strange-cosmic-explosion">Strange cosmic explosion</h2>



<p>Experts have identified the source of the explosion as a fast X-ray transient. It is tagged EP240315a and seems to be tied to a gamma-ray burst designated GRB 240315C.</p>



<p>Such intense flares are best known for releasing enormous energy across multiple wavelengths. Researchers are excited about the chance to match X-ray data with radio signals and figure out if standard models still hold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-event-linked-to-a-gamma-ray-burst">Event linked to a gamma-ray burst</h2>



<p>Roughly an hour after the X-ray peak, observers in South Africa recorded matching visible light. Additional instruments in Hawaii and Chile confirmed a redshift that places this explosion about 12.5 billion light-years away.</p>



<p>This distance indicates that the blast happened when our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-blaze-star-explosion-visible-one-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmos</a> was far younger. According to the research team, it is a rare glimpse of primordial processes that shaped early star formation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-ancient-cosmic-explosions">Exploring ancient cosmic explosions</h2>



<p>The team collaborated with Roberto Ricci, <a href="https://web.uniroma2.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Rome Tor Vergata</a>, to investigate the outburst in radio wavelengths. The experts uncovered signs of a relativistic jet consistent with typical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bursts</a> from massive star collapse.</p>



<p>“Combining the power of X-ray and radio observations hands us a new way to explore these ancient explosions even without detecting their <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/ems/12_gammarays/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gamma rays</a>,” said Roberto. This multi-wavelength approach is a strong clue to the burst’s overall energy release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-powerful-jet-from-a-collapsing-star">Powerful jet from a collapsing star</h2>



<p>“Such a long delay has never been previously observed,” noted Hui Sun, a scientist at the <a href="https://gcn.nasa.gov/missions/einstein-probe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Einstein Probe Science Center</a>. EP240315a arrived hundreds of seconds before its corresponding gamma-ray signal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This difference complicates standard ideas about what triggers the blasts. Researchers are weighing new explanations for how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-novae-star-explosion-may-be-origin-phosphorus-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">burst</a> engine might fire up in stages.</p>



<p>“This tells us something really new and maybe we have to rethink the models we have for gamma-ray bursts,” said Weimin Yuan, Einstein Probe's principal investigator. He pointed to the extended soft X-ray glow as a clue to unexpected activity in the source.</p>



<p>Scientists say more bursts are needed to confirm whether EP240315a is a one-off or part of a pattern. They hope these puzzling signals might show that gamma-ray <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-year-on-mars-avalanches-icy-explosions-and-the-arrival-of-spring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bursts</a> go through previously unseen phases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-cosmic-explosion-theories">Rethinking cosmic explosion theories</h2>



<p>“This is just the starting point and really demonstrates the potential of Einstein Probe to detect cosmic explosions from the early Universe,” said Weimin. </p>



<p>The probe's wide field of view is expected to reveal more events in the distant corners of space.</p>



<p>“As soon as we opened the eyes of Einstein Probe to the sky, it found interesting new phenomena. That's pretty good and should mean that there are a lot more interesting discoveries to come,” noted Erik Kuulkers of the European Space Agency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-einstein-probe">More about the Einstein Probe </h2>



<p>Einstein Probe is a joint project led by the <a href="https://english.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, partnering with the European Space Agency and other institutions. </p>



<p>The orobe was launched from China’s Xichang site on January 9, 2024 with instruments ready to scan for uncharted X-ray outbursts.</p>



<p>The Follow-up X-ray Telescope locks onto sources flagged by its wide-view partner. This two-part approach helps scientists gather quick signals and then take a deeper look without missing fleeting moments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-cosmic-history">Early cosmic history</h2>



<p><a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0034-4885/53/8/003" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">High-redshift detections</a> can reveal how stars and galaxies formed under extreme conditions. Fresh data from future telescopes may confirm patterns or highlight even more surprises.</p>



<p>A few of these explosions could help astronomers piece together the puzzle of early cosmic history. They also hope to refine ideas about massive star endings and black hole birth.</p>



<p>Scientists remain intrigued by the bursts that appear more energetic at different stages. They are hopeful that more in-depth studies will confirm whether we need to revamp long-held assumptions.</p>



<p>Experts hope new detections will truly clarify massive star endings. The observations might reshape how we view ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/supernova-explosion-captured-in-the-constellation-gemini/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic events</a>.</p>

Strange cosmic explosion changes what we know about space

<p>Scientists have discovered two continent-sized regions hidden deep within Earth's mantle, referred to in a recent study as "islands." </p>



<p>Research from <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> reveals that these regions are not only hotter than their surroundings, but are also ancient, dating back at least half a billion years or longer.</p>



<p>The findings challenge conventional theories about the Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earths-mantle-shapes-surface-topography/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mantle</a> being a well-mixed and rapidly flowing system. Instead, the research suggests there is much less flow within the mantle than previously believed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-islands-inside-earth">Hidden islands inside Earth</h2>



<p>These subterranean islands are&nbsp;buried 1,200 miles (2,000km) beneath our feet, and reach heights of roughly 620 miles (1,000km), dwarfing every mountain peak found on Earth's surface and every other planet in our solar system.</p>



<p>The regions in question, located beneath Africa and the Pacific Ocean, were first identified in the late 20th century through seismic analysis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When large earthquakes strike, they cause the Earth to resonate like a bell, producing oscillations that seismologists can analyze to reveal subsurface anomalies. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-low-seismic-velocity-provinces-llsvps">Large Low Seismic Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs)</h2>



<p>The studies showed the presence of what scientists now call Large Low Seismic Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs).</p>



<p>“Nobody knows what they are, and whether they are only a temporary phenomenon or if they have been sitting there for millions or perhaps even billions of years,” explained study senior author Arwen Deuss, a seismologist at Utrecht University.</p>

<p>Surrounding these “islands” is a graveyard of cold, sunken tectonic plates that have descended through Earth's mantle via subduction - the process by which one plate sinks beneath another. </p>



<p>Unlike the surrounding regions, seismic waves slow down significantly in the LLSVPs due to their elevated temperatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-mantle-is-still-a-mystery">Earth's mantle is still a mystery</h2>



<p>To delve deeper into these structures, Deuss and her colleague Sujania Talavera-Soza incorporated a novel approach to studying seismic waves.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Beyond analyzing how much waves slow down, they also measured “damping,” or how much energy the waves lose as they travel through the Earth.</p>



<p>“Against our expectations, we found little damping in the LLSVPs, which made the tones sound very loud there. But we did find a lot of damping in the cold slab graveyard, where the tones sounded very soft,” Talavera-Soza said.</p>



<p>The findings revealed that the LLSVPs, despite being hot, do not significantly dampen seismic waves. This contradicted expectations based on the behavior of waves in the hotter upper mantle, where both slowing and damping are observed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grain-size-plays-a-role-in-llsvps">Grain size plays a role in LLSVPs</h2>



<p>The unexpected results prompted the team to investigate the material properties of the LLSVPs. According to mineralogical analyses suggested by study co-author Laura Cobden, grain size plays a pivotal role.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the cold slab graveyard, tectonic plates recrystallize into small grains as they sink into the mantle, leading to significant energy loss as seismic waves cross numerous grain boundaries. </p>



<p>In contrast, the LLSVPs appear to consist of much larger grains, which allow waves to pass with minimal damping.</p>

<p>Since those mineral grains do not grow fast, it means that LLSVPs are much older than the surrounding slab graveyards.</p>



<p>This insight suggests the LLSVPs are not part of the mantle’s convection processes and have remained largely unchanged for vast periods - which is in stark contrast to the constantly recycling material around them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>The rigidity and age of the LLSVPs challenge the notion of the mantle as a uniformly mixed system. “After all, the LLSVPs must be able to survive mantle convection one way or another,” Talavera-Soza said.</p>



<p>This has profound implications for understanding Earth’s evolution. The mantle drives surface phenomena such as volcanism and mountain building.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, mantle plumes - columns of hot material rising from deep within the Earth - are believed to originate at the edges of LLSVPs. These plumes eventually cause <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-and-trees-predict-volcano-eruptions-when-viewed-from-space-satellites/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic activity</a>, such as that seen in Hawaii.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-the-hidden-islands">Studying the hidden islands</h2>



<p>To study these deep regions, seismologists rely on oscillations caused by massive earthquakes, particularly those occurring at great depths, such as the 1994 Bolivia earthquake.</p>



<p>“It never made it into the newspapers because it took place at a large depth of 650 km and luckily did not result in any damage or casualties at the Earth's surface,” Deuss said.</p>



<p>Seismometers have been recording high-quality data since 1975, allowing researchers to revisit past earthquakes to gather valuable insights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-llsvps-and-earth-s-mantle">LLSVPs and Earth’s mantle</h2>



<p>This research provides a transformative view of Earth’s mantle. Instead of a uniform, well-mixed system, the mantle contains ancient, stable structures that defy conventional models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding these regions is crucial for interpreting surface phenomena and offers a clearer picture of Earth’s complex inner workings.</p>



<p>“The Earth's mantle is the engine that drives all these phenomena. Take, for example, mantle plumes, which are large bubbles of hot material that rise from the Earth's deep interior as in a lava lamp. And we think that those mantle plumes originate at the edges of the LLSVPs,” Deuss said.</p>



<p>The discovery of the LLSVPs’ unique properties and their role in shaping Earth’s surface processes marks a significant step forward in the study of our planet’s dynamic interior.</p>

The director of the <a href="https://www.ipp.cas.cz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Plasma Physics</a> at the <a href="https://english.hf.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hefei Institutes of Physical Science</a>, under the <a href="https://english.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, is one of the key people guiding these operations.</p>



<p>“A fusion device must achieve stable operation at high efficiency for thousands of seconds to enable the self-sustaining circulation of plasma, which is essential for the continuous power generation of future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molten-salt-could-reshape-the-future-of-nuclear-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fusion</a> plants,” said <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1741-4326/ad4270" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Song Yuntao</a>, vice president of HFIPS.</p>

<p>Early tokamaks in the <a href="https://euro-fusion.org/fusion/history-of-fusion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1950s</a> showed that plasma confinement might be possible, but consistent power production remained elusive.</p>



<p>Reaching a state where fusion reactions produce net energy requires pushing the limits of temperature and duration, and that is exactly what EAST’s latest run has attempted to move closer toward.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-upgrading-fusion-reactor-s-heating">Upgrading fusion reactor’s heating</h2>



<p>EAST’s heating setup, reportedly once equal to the power of nearly <a href="https://phys.org/news/2025-01-chinese-artificial-sun-fusion-power.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">70,000 standard household microwaves</a>, received a surge in power output this year while maintaining steady functions. Engineers designed upgrades to manage increased load without sacrificing performance.</p>



<p>The improved hardware is expected to offer valuable data on high-energy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-fission-what-exactly-happens-when-the-nucleus-of-an-atom-splits-in-two/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plasma</a> behavior, which is critical for scaling up future reactors.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Additional experimental facilities are being assembled in Hefei, aiming to speed up fusion research. </p>



<p>Many experts believe that test reactors like EAST will guide the design of next-generation projects, including the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (<a href="https://nucleus.iaea.org/sites/fusionportal/Shared%20Documents/FEC%202018/fec2018-preprints/preprint0216.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CFETR</a>).</p>

<p>“We hope to expand international collaboration via EAST and bring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-dogs-are-rapidly-evolving-in-strange-ways-due-to-nuclear-radiation-exposure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fusion</a> energy into practical use for humanity,” said SONG.</p>



<p>The momentum from EAST’s milestone has fueled discussions about how soon fusion might serve everyday needs. </p>



<p>Some commentators claim it is still decades away, while others argue that improved materials and new fusion reactor designs may accelerate progress.</p>



<p>Regardless of timelines, steady, clean power remains a priority as we search for reliable ways to satisfy growing energy demands. </p>

<p>In the ceaseless dance of evolution, it has been recently discovered that men are moving at a faster rhythm than women. This isn't a matter of opinion or casual observation, but a result of extensive analysis.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that biological and environmental factors are interacting in ways that favor men's physical development at a faster pace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-living-conditions-and-male-evolution">Living conditions and male evolution</h2>



<p>The research was led by experts at the <a href="https://unige.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Genova</a>. They have found that enhanced living conditions - including access to healthier food, superior healthcare, and reduced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-eats-away-our-brains-cognitive-defenses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> factors - have led to a rapid increase in men's stature and weight.</p>



<p>Remarkably, this growth trend appears to be passed down from generation to generation.</p>



<p>A somewhat intriguing aspect of this study is that the same positive environmental changes have not sparked comparable evolutionary progress in women. </p>



<p>This has led to the suggestion that women may not be as responsive to changes in their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-at-evolutionary-rhythms">A closer look at evolutionary rhythms</h2>



<p>Digging a bit deeper into the study, the researchers focused on more than 135,000 people from 62 different countries. </p>



<p>They used 2003 data from the World Health Organization (<a href="https://www.who.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHO</a>) as the basis of their research, specifically examining the height and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fathers-have-a-surprising-influence-on-their-babys-birth-weight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weight</a> of the individuals.</p>



<p>To add another layer to their analysis, the team weighed this data against a measure known as the Human Development Index (HDI). This tool evaluates a country's overall quality of life, taking into account factors like health, education, and income.</p>



<p>The idea was to look for a correlation between a country's living conditions and the physical characteristics of its male population.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environment-fuels-the-evolution-of-men">Environment fuels the evolution of men</h2>



<p>The results were not only intriguing but also quite significant. An increase of 0.2 in HDI resulted in men growing by 1.5 inches and gaining 14 pounds of muscle. So, to put it simply, better living conditions are making men taller and stronger.</p>



<p>The researchers explained that these changes align with basic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evolution-is-not-as-random-as-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary theory</a>. Traits such as height in men are seen as signals of health and strength, making them more attractive to potential mates in the process of evolution.</p>



<p>"Consequently, this is why men assess the formidability of potential opponents using physical cues, such as upper body strength, and women find taller, muscular men with a relatively large overall <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-and-bmi-do-not-accurately-reflect-a-persons-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">body mass</a> (but not obese) particularly attractive," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-body-sizes-of-males-and-females">Body sizes of males and females</h2>



<p>This research on the evolution of men and women also touched on an interesting concept known as sexual size dimorphism (SSD). This term refers to a noticeable difference in body sizes between males and females within the same species.</p>



<p>The blanket octopus is a perfect illustration of SSD, as the females outweigh males by a factor of 40,000.</p>



<p>The study revealed that for every 0.2 increase in HDI, women gained about six pounds, while men gained about 14 pounds. A similar pattern emerged with height, with women growing roughly 0.6 inches compared to men's 1.5-inch increase.</p>



<p>The researchers also examined data specific to the UK and found that men's height increased faster than women's over time. While women's height grew by 0.25 centimeters every 5 years, the growth rate for men was 0.69 centimeters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-trends-in-evolution">Global trends in evolution </h2>



<p>The researchers concluded that as living conditions improve globally, people's height and weight increase. However, this effect is notably more pronounced in men than in women.</p>



<p>"Based on our main finding of sexual size dimorphism being greater in more favorable environments, it is clear that the development and maintenance of gross morphology is more sensitive to living conditions in men than in women," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>It's important to clarify here that these results don't suggest any form of superiority or inferiority. Instead, they attest to the complex dance of evolution and the various factors, from genetics to environmental conditions, that cause species to evolve differently.</p>



<p>Ultimately, even as our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-evolution-may-be-the-biggest-roadblock-to-solving-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human evolution</a> grows, the dance continues, and each step we learn brings with it new insights and possibilities.</p>

<p>For alpha baboons, for example, the price of power is steep. </p>



<p>A new study shows that these primates live under intense stress. Surprisingly, their stress doesn’t come from fighting rivals but from guarding their mates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-alpha-male">What does it mean to be an alpha male?</h2>



<p>Being an alpha male often means embodying confidence, leadership, and a strong presence in social situations. </p>



<p>People who see themselves - or others - as alpha males typically take charge in group settings, make decisive choices, and inspire others to follow their lead. </p>



<p>They usually exhibit traits like assertiveness, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-robots-with-charismatic-voices-get-better-results-from-students/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">charisma</a>, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Whether it's in the workplace, among friends, or in romantic relationships, alpha males are seen as the ones who set the tone and drive the group forward. </p>



<p>They prioritize their goals and are often highly motivated, which can make them natural leaders in various aspects of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alpha-males-and-leadership-pressure">Alpha males and leadership pressure</h2>



<p>Becoming an alpha male <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-face-an-uncertain-future-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboon</a> is no easy feat. Males must battle their way up the ranks - relying on strength, strategy, and persistence. But reaching the top is only the beginning. Staying there demands constant vigilance.</p>



<p>The dominant male must protect his status against challengers, ensuring that no rival steals his position. But his biggest concern is not other males - it is the females.</p>



<p>During fertile periods, he must closely monitor them and prevent other males from mating with them. This requires following the females around for days on end, ensuring that he remains their only mate.</p>



<p>“They’re essentially staking a claim; preventing other males from gaining access,” said Professor Susan Alberts of <a href="https://duke.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke University</a>.</p>



<p>This near-constant surveillance takes a toll. Instead of using their time to rest, eat, or socialize, alpha males devote their energy to guarding their mates. Over time, this effort drains them both physically and mentally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-in-alpha-male-baboons">Stress in alpha male baboons</h2>



<p>For decades, scientists have studied wild baboons in Kenya as part of the <a href="https://amboselibaboons.nd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amboseli Baboon Research Project</a>. Since 1971, researchers have closely tracked the social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visually-striking-primate-features-ease-tension-and-reduce-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interactions and behaviors</a> of these animals, collecting valuable data about their lives.</p>



<p>A study published in 2011 provided one of the first clues that being an alpha male comes with a cost. The research, led by senior scientist Laurence Gesquiere at Duke University, found that alpha males had significantly higher levels of glucocorticoids - hormones linked to stress and the "fight-or-flight" response.</p>



<p>“In humans, this response is activated for every kind of challenge we face, whether it’s running down the block because you’re late for a meeting, running a marathon, or going into a stressful meeting with your boss,” Alberts explained.</p>



<p>The new study builds on these findings. The research team analyzed 14 years of behavioral data from 204 male baboons and measured their stress hormone levels using droppings left behind in the wild.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-source-of-stress">Surprising source of stress</h2>



<p>The results confirmed that life at the top is stressful. Alpha males had 6% higher glucocorticoid levels than lower-ranking males. </p>



<p>But the study also revealed something unexpected: aggressive behaviors such as fighting, bullying, or threatening rivals had no impact on the stress levels of alpha male baboons. “That was a big surprise!” Gesquiere exclaimed.</p>



<p>The researchers had expected that constant battles with other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primate-evolution-completing-the-timetree-of-life-for-all-of-our-closest-relatives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">males</a> would be the main cause of stress. Instead, they found that stress hormones spiked when alpha males spent more time guarding females.</p>



<p>Their thyroid hormone levels also dropped, indicating they were burning more calories than they consumed. This suggested that being an alpha male is not just stressful - it is physically exhausting as well.</p>



<p>“Being alpha really has energy consequences,” Gesquiere noted. Unlike lower-ranking males, who can focus on feeding and resting, alpha males are constantly on alert, even when they attempt to eat.</p>



<p>“They’re constantly interrupted,” Alberts said. “They'll start to dig up or pry open a tasty morsel, but then the female gets up and walks away, and they have to abandon it.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-cost-for-short-term-rewards">High cost for short-term rewards</h2>



<p>The constant stress of being an alpha male baboon appears to have lasting effects. Previous research on Amboseli <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/non-human-primate-chromosomes-mapped-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboons</a> found that top-ranking males age faster and have shorter lifespans than their lower-ranking counterparts.</p>



<p>Chemical changes in their DNA suggest that stress accelerates aging, and weakens their bodies over time. Once they lose their alpha status, they may struggle to recover from years of physical and emotional strain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-can-humans-learn-from-baboons">What can humans learn from baboons?</h2>



<p>While baboon society is different from human society, some parallels exist. Alpha males live in a rigid hierarchy, but humans navigate multiple social structures. A person may be a low-ranking employee at work but a leader in their sports team or community.</p>



<p>Still, the study on alpha male baboons highlights an important lesson: leadership comes with challenges, and constant stress can take a toll on well-being. In humans and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-primates-must-prioritize-survival-over-long-term-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baboons</a> alike, maintaining power requires energy, focus, and sacrifice.</p>



<p>For dominant male baboons, the cost of being on top is clear. “Stress definitely has long-term consequences,” noted Gesquiere.</p>

<p>The human memory, as complex as it is, relies on several factors for successful information retrieval. These factors include context, variation, and the way knowledge is reinforced over time.</p>



<p>Simply reviewing material in the same way may not always yield the best results, highlighting the need for more dynamic approaches.</p>

<p>When it comes to providing practical guidelines for effective learning, it's not always easy to translate scientific findings into actionable strategies.</p>



<p>Learners often fall into the trap of relying on familiar study methods that may feel effective but fail to promote long-term retention.</p>



<p>A recent study offers compelling evidence that varying methods of learning and recalling information could significantly improve memory performance, providing fresh insight into the subject.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rediscovering-memory-retrieval">Rediscovering memory retrieval</h2>



<p>So what does it take for our brain to learn and remember effectively? Is there a method for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spacing-effect-spaced-learning-long-term-impact-on-memory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memorizing</a> things more efficiently?</p>



<p>The answer perhaps lies not only in retrieving information from memory at regular intervals - but also doing it in varied ways. </p>



<p>The study was led by scientists from <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=SWPS+University&amp;client=ms-android-charter-us-rvc3&amp;sourceid=chrome-mobile&amp;ie=UTF-8#ebo=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPS University</a> in Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The initial findings suggest that one could boost <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sleep-improves-memory-formation-and-recall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory recall</a> using a method that the researchers refer to as "variable learning."</p>



<p>This technique involves introducing variety into the way we memorize, essentially learning about a phenomenon from different perspectives, contexts, and methods. </p>



<p>According to the study,  even the process of retrieval should be varied (not tied to identical cues leading to the answer).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-variable-retrieval-in-learning">Understanding variable retrieval in learning</h2>



<p>In their research paper, "<em>The role of variable retrieval in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-how-students-learn-is-key-to-helping-them-succeed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effective learning</a>,</em>" the experts examined the many layers of the concept of variable learning.</p>



<p>In a series of experiments, participants were asked to learn foreign words, specifically Finnish. These words were embedded in sentences presented in the participants' native language. For instance, "Dad is sweeping the lattia" (Finnish: floor).</p>



<p>During the study, each foreign word was presented multiple times, either in the same sentence or in different sentences. </p>



<p>The researchers found that memory performance was improved when foreign words were presented in varied sentences rather than repetitive ones.</p>



<p>The benefits of this method were observed both immediately after the study phase and 24 hours later.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-false-belief-in-learning-methods">False belief in learning methods</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the participants believed that it was easier for them to memorize foreign words when they learned them using the same sentences repetitively, which contradicted the test results.</p>



<p>This phenomenon is referred to as a metacognitive illusion - a false belief in the effectiveness of certain learning conditions, leading to less effective ways of learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-of-variable-learning">Challenges of variable learning </h2>



<p>The concept of learning different features of information in each session is not foreign; it's vital for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-our-brain-form-long-term-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">long-term memory</a>. This could be analogous to creating multiple paths to memorized information, which can then be used to retrieve it.</p>



<p>The more paths we create while learning, the higher the chance of effectively recalling the information later. Such a diverse way of learning, where we explore several aspects of information, is a challenge for our memory.</p>



<p>While this approach requires more effort than learning repetitively, the effort boosts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/having-too-much-knowledge-can-be-a-curse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">knowledge</a> acquisition.</p>



<p>"If we want our knowledge to be useful, i.e., accessible in different circumstances and in response to different cues or questions on a test, we should enrich our study sessions with the following difficulties: retrieving previously learned information (instead of reading it multiple times), spreading learning over a period of time (instead of accumulating it in a single learning session), and retrieving information from memory in different ways (and not in response to the same cue)," noted study co-author Dr. Ewa Butowska-Buczyńska.</p>



<p>The researchers believe that their findings could guide effective learning strategies. However, they noted that further work is needed to put these methods of learning into a broader context.</p>

<p>The January blues aren't just a human struggle - our four-legged friends can feel them too. Dogs, much like humans, can experience post-holiday lows that leave them feeling out of sorts.</p>



<p>We're not talking about an episode of Blues Clues here, but rather a real phenomenon that affects many pets during this time of year.</p>



<p>According to new research conducted by the Guide Dogs organization, changes in routine and shorter days might be contributing to your dog's seasonal slump.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-january-blues-in-dogs">January blues in dogs</h2>



<p>Just as many of us feel a bit lethargic and down in January, our canine companions are no different. </p>



<p>In fact, the survey found that about one in four dogs exhibit signs of lethargy and lack of energy. Furthermore, roughly one in seven dogs appear to show signs of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-household-sounds-trigger-anxiety-in-dogs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anxiety</a> or boredom. </p>



<p>But what is bringing dogs down in January? The answer is surprisingly human-like: changes in daily routines, dark mornings, and the absence of their owners (after the festive season).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-canine-emotions-mimic-humans">Canine emotions mimic humans</h2>



<p>A staggering 94% of the surveyed owners agreed that their pets seemed to mirror their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-can-feel-our-emotions-through-our-heart-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotions</a>.</p>



<p>"Dogs are incredibly attuned to their owners’ feelings, and when routines are disrupted or we feel low, it’s no surprise that they might reflect those changes," said Tim Stafford, director of canine affairs at Guide Dogs.</p>



<p>However, it’s worth mentioning that while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-evolving-to-fit-the-modern-lives-of-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a> may be receptive to our feelings, we might not be as good at recognizing theirs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-helping-your-dog-cope-with-the-blues">Helping your dog cope with the blues </h2>



<p>January is undoubtedly a rough month for both dogs and their owners. With this in mind,  it's important to pay extra attention to your dog’s behavior at this time.</p>



<p>"We know that dogs thrive on routine and consistency, so whilst January can be tough, by focusing on re-establishing structure and following our tips on exercise and stimulation, we can easily help our dogs (and ourselves) feel better," noted Stafford. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-january-s-impact-on-dog-owners">January's impact on dog owners</h2>



<p>Did you know that more than half of dog owners feel the pressure of the dark days and cold weather of January? Approximately one-third are dealing with financial stress, while 39% struggle to get back into their routine.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, during January, many dog owners also observed noticeable changes in their pets' behavior. </p>



<p>Lethargy was the most commonly reported issue - affecting 27% of dogs - while 15% of owners noted signs of anxiety in their furry friends. Additionally, 13% reported their dogs experiencing boredom.</p>



<p>Overall, 59% of owners acknowledged observing behavioral shifts in their pets during the post-holiday period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-boost-your-dog-s-mood">How to boost your dog's mood</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.guidedog.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guide Dogs organization</a> recommends maintaining regular routines around walks, playtimes, and meals. There's no denying that dogs feel secure when they know what to expect.</p>



<p>Engaging with your dog during walks, playing games, and teaching them new skills can spark joy and distract them from their January blues. </p>



<p>On cold, dreary days, snuggling on the sofa with your furry friend can also help to reduce stress and forge a stronger bond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupted-dog-routines">Disrupted dog routines</h2>



<p>The January blues can impact how you care for your dog too. Around one in five people confessed that the dark mornings have delayed outings, disrupting their dog's routine.</p>



<p>With many dog owners returning to work, about 13% reported that their dogs are spending more time alone compared to the holiday season.</p>



<p>However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. An uplifting 88% of owners agreed that walking their dog improved their mental well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-battling-the-january-blues">Battling the January blues</h2>



<p>The survey concluded on a positive note, revealing that 45% of owners have resolved to lead a more active lifestyle this year. The respondents plan to use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dog-walking-improves-mobility-and-prevents-falls-in-older-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dog walks</a> as an opportunity to improve their fitness.</p>



<p>So, as we muddle through January, know that you are not alone battling the blues. It seems even our furry friends are feeling it too. </p>



<p>However, by spending more time with our dogs, we can lift their spirits while giving our own a much-needed boost as well.</p>

<p>Understanding how birds think and process information has long been a mystery. Unlike mammals, birds do not leave behind preserved brains in fossils, making it difficult for scientists to study their cognitive abilities over time. </p>



<p>However, a breakthrough study by evolutionary biologists in Australia and neuroscience researchers in Canada is now providing remarkable insights into avian intelligence.</p>



<p>By analyzing the structure of bird skulls using advanced digital technology, researchers at Flinders University in South Australia and the University of Lethbridge in Canada have developed a new way to study both extinct and living birds. </p>



<p>The method involves creating digital "endocasts" from the cranial spaces inside bird skulls, allowing them to estimate brain size and shape with remarkable accuracy. </p>



<p>This approach is giving scientists a clearer picture of bird cognition, intelligence, and evolutionary history without needing to physically examine brain tissue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reconstructing-bird-brains">Reconstructing bird brains</h2>



<p>The research, published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Biology Letters</em>, focuses on reconstructing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seagulls-birds-more-intelligent-than-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> brain structures by analyzing the inside of their skulls.</p>



<p>By scanning dry museum skulls from long-dead birds, scientists have been able to extract surprisingly detailed information about their brains. This includes insights into the size of crucial brain regions responsible for intelligence and agility.</p>



<p>"This showed that the two correspond so closely that there is no need for the actual brain to estimate a bird's brain proportions," said study lead author and <a href="https://www.flinders.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flinders University</a> PhD researcher Aubrey Keirnan.</p>



<p>Despite the term "bird brain" often being used as an insult, birds are known for their remarkable intelligence. Many bird species such as crows and parrots demonstrate problem-solving skills, tool use, and even self-awareness.</p>



<p>"The brains of birds are so large that they are practically a braincase with a beak," noted Keirnan.</p>



<p>This study sought to determine whether the imprint left by a bird's brain on its skull accurately reflects the proportions of two crucial parts of the brain: the forebrain, which is responsible for intelligence, and the cerebellum, which controls coordination and movement.</p>



<p>To test this, the researchers scanned the skulls of 136 bird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survival-of-the-smartest-chickadees-with-better-memory-live-longer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> and compared the results with either microscopic brain sections or existing literature data. </p>



<p>By doing so, they were able to determine whether the volume of these critical brain regions matched the imprints left inside the skull.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpectedly-precise-correlation">Unexpectedly precise correlation</h2>



<p>The results of the study surprised even the researchers. The correlation between brain volume and endocast surface area was almost one-to-one, indicating a highly reliable method for estimating brain proportions.</p>



<p>"We used computed microtomography to scan the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crows-hold-grudges-for-up-to-17-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> skulls. This allows us to digitally fill the brain cavity to get the brain's imprint, also called an endocast," explained Professor Vera Weisbecker from Flinders University.</p>



<p>The fact that endocasts so precisely reflect the shape of the brain means that scientists can now study the brains of rare and even extinct bird species without the need for preserved brain tissue. </p>



<p>"This is excellent news because it allows us to gather insight into the neuroanatomy of elusive, rare, and even extinct species without ever even seeing their brains," said Weisbecker.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionizing-bird-brain-research">Revolutionizing bird brain research</h2>



<p>The ability to create digital endocasts marks a significant shift in how scientists study bird brains. In the past, researchers had to pour liquid latex into a skull cavity, wait for it to harden, and then break the skull to retrieve the endocast. This process was destructive and often impractical for studying rare or fragile specimens.</p>



<p>"Using non-destructive scanning not only allows us to create endocasts from the rarest of birds, it also produces digital files of the skulls and endocasts that can be shared with scientists and the public," explained Weisbecker.</p>



<p>With these digital models, researchers can now conduct large-scale comparative studies, track evolutionary trends, and even explore how different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crows-count-out-loud-just-like-toddlers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird species</a> developed their unique cognitive abilities. </p>



<p>The ability to share digital endocasts worldwide also means that scientists can collaborate more easily and work with data from species that might be difficult to access in person.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-bird-evolution">Implications for bird evolution</h2>



<p>One of the most exciting aspects of this research is its potential to shed light on the evolution of bird intelligence. </p>



<p>By studying the brain structures of different bird species, researchers can gain a better understanding of how certain cognitive traits developed over time.</p>



<p>University of Lethbridge Professor Andrew Iwaniuk, who co-led the study, admits he was surprised by how accurately the endocasts reflected brain structures. </p>



<p>"While most of the telencephalon (outer part of the forebrain) is visible from the outer surface, a substantial portion of the cerebellum is obscured by this region," said Professor Iwaniuk.</p>



<p>"Given that the degree of obscurity can vary between species, I did not expect a strong correlation between endocast surface area and brain volume across all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bigger-bird-brains-grow-at-the-expense-of-the-parents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-bird-conservation">Implications for bird conservation</h2>



<p>The study also has implications for conservation and research on endangered birds. Since many threatened species are difficult to study in the wild, being able to analyze skull structures from museum specimens could provide valuable insights into their cognitive abilities and behaviors.</p>



<p>Additionally, this research could offer clues about extinct species, including birds' closest prehistoric relatives: the dinosaurs. However, applying this method to dinosaurs remains uncertain. </p>



<p>"For example, crocodiles are the closest living relatives of birds, but their brains look nothing like that of a bird - and their brains do not fill the braincase enough to be as informative," said Keirnan.</p>



<p>This suggests that while digital endocasts may help reconstruct the brains of extinct birds, they may not be as useful for studying dinosaur cognition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-avian-neuroscience">Future of avian neuroscience</h2>



<p>This study marks a major step forward in avian neuroscience and evolutionary biology. By using advanced digital techniques, scientists can now explore the complexities of bird brains without relying on preserved brain tissue, opening up new possibilities for research.</p>



<p>As scanning technologies continue to improve, researchers may be able to refine their methods even further, potentially unlocking new insights into how birds process information, solve problems, and interact with their environments. </p>



<p>The findings could also lead to a better understanding of the evolutionary pressures that shaped bird intelligence over millions of years.</p>



<p>Ultimately, this research demonstrates that birds are far more intelligent than the outdated stereotype of "bird brains" suggests. </p>



<p>With new digital tools, scientists are now able to unlock the secrets hidden within bird skulls, providing a clearer picture of avian cognition and evolution.</p>



<p>As more species are studied, we may discover even more surprising connections between brain structure and intelligence in the animal kingdom.</p>

"Bird brain" study gives remarkable new insights into avian intelligence

<p>A mysterious item from the inner workings of a cow has sparked a worldwide scramble. Hardened lumps of bile known as cattle gallstones have become so valuable that criminal rings on multiple continents have begun hunting them down.</p>



<p>Some stones can command over twice the price of gold, sparking tales of nighttime thefts and elaborate smuggling schemes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-cattle-gallstones-are-suddenly-important">Why cattle gallstones are suddenly important</h2>



<p>The fascination with gallstones centers on their use in <a href="https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/traditional-chinese-medicine-what-you-need-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese traditional medicine</a>, which is valued at around $60 billion annually, according to the World Health Organization (<a href="https://www.who.int/health-topics/traditional-complementary-and-integrative-medicine#tab=tab_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHO</a>).&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://africana.sdsu.edu/our-faculty/gomes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Daniela Gomes da Silva</a>, a researcher at <a href="https://www.international.unesp.br/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">São Paulo State University</a>, says the intensifying appetite for these stones has pushed some producers to consider strange ideas, such as trying to induce gallstones in their herds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-cattle-gallstones-the-basics">Understanding cattle gallstones - the basics</h2>



<p>Cattle gallstones are solid formations that develop in the gallbladder of cows, although they’re not as common as in humans. They usually form when there's an imbalance in the substances that make up bile, much like in humans. </p>



<p>However, in cattle, gallstones are typically made up of calcium salts like calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate instead of cholesterol, which is more common in humans. </p>



<p>This difference stems from cattle’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ai-can-help-reduce-methane-emissions-from-cows/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unique digestive systems</a>, which are designed to process large amounts of plant material. </p>



<p>Their high-fiber diets and the way their bodies handle bile contribute to the formation of these calcium-based stones.</p>



<p>When cattle develop gallstones, they might not always show obvious signs at first. However, if the stones block the bile ducts, cows can experience discomfort, reduced appetite, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seaweed-supplements-reduce-methane-in-grazing-cattle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">digestive issues</a>. </p>



<p>Farmers and veterinarians usually detect gallstones through ultrasound examinations or other imaging techniques if they suspect a problem. </p>



<p>The fact that it's impossible to know if a cow has a gallstone without proper examination adds an entirely separate and sinister layer to this new global smuggling market.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-price-and-a-hidden-black-market">High price and a hidden black market</h2>



<p>These rust-colored nuggets can fetch more than $5,800 an ounce - twice as much as gold - in certain markets.</p>



<p>They are often dried, powdered, and then combined with other materials to form traditional pills that some believe can help treat serious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stem-cell-therapy-improves-brain-activity-after-stroke/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions like strokes</a>.</p>



<p>Because of the profits involved, a black market has developed. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saving-parrots-in-the-illegal-wildlife-trade-with-dna-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smugglers</a> are known to transport stones in hidden compartments to avoid taxes and police, and some producers are wary of armed theft by those who want a shortcut to these lucrative byproducts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cattle-gallstones-and-stroke-recovery">Cattle gallstones and stroke recovery</h2>



<p>The WHO <a href="https://www.emro.who.int/health-topics/stroke-cerebrovascular-accident/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a> that strokes are the leading cause of death in China. Traditional remedies that include gallstone powder are often promoted as a way to provide extra time for stroke patients.</p>



<p>One <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6548905/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> from the <a href="https://www.hku.hk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hong Kong</a> found evidence that certain ingredients in popular “<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4281447/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Angong</a>” pills, which include cattle gallstone powder, may offer short-term protection for the brain in rats experiencing ischemic strokes. </p>



<p>While these findings are still under investigation, this belief in gallstones’ protective qualities has added to their demand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-controversies">Wildlife controversies</h2>



<p>“The rapid growth of the TCM industry over the last few decades has exacerbated the pressure on endangered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-wildlife-conservation-day-2024-saving-species-from-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildlife</a> in Asia and beyond,” said the London-based <a href="https://eia-international.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Investigation Agency</a>. Some in the conservation community are concerned about the wider industry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although cattle gallstones themselves do not threaten wild species, the industry sometimes combines them with ingredients like rhino horn or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-pangolin-day-project-launched-to-save-the-elusive-mammal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pangolin scales</a> in certain remedies. That element has triggered alarm among groups working to curb illegal wildlife trafficking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-demand-for-cattle-gallstones">Rising demand for cattle gallstones</h2>

<p>Da Silva explains that younger herds may yield better meat and fewer gallstones because there is less time for these lumps to form.</p>



<p>The irony is that while certain ranchers see gallstones as valuable gold nuggets, modern techniques that improve farm production may unintentionally reduce the presence of these costly stones. </p>



<p>Still, unscrupulous players look to exploit any opportunity to get their hands on the product, even resorting to theft in some regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lingering-mysteries">Lingering mysteries</h2>



<p>Scientists have yet to determine the precise reasons some cattle develop gallstones. Da Silva notes that older animals with more time on pasture are more prone to this condition.</p>



<p>However, it remains unclear how diet, genetics, and stress might play a role. Rumors occasionally spread of stones the size of a football, but these stories are rarely supported by credible evidence.</p>



<p>Experts caution producers not to chase unrealistic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-elephant-day-2024-saving-the-gentle-giants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">legends</a>, warning that the gallstone frenzy can lead to costly risks, including robberies and legal troubles if regulations are ignored.</p>

<p>Strict enforcement and improved oversight may push more of the market into legal channels. <p>A recent study by researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) and the National University of the Peruvian Amazon reveals the existence of an unknown family of microbes thriving in the waterlogged, low-oxygen peatlands of Peru’s northwestern Amazon rainforest.</p>



<p>These tiny organisms play a crucial role in the carbon cycle, with the ability to either stabilize carbon for long-term storage or release it into the atmosphere as greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide and methane.</p>



<p>The findings highlight the vital function of tropical peatlands as one of the world’s most significant carbon storage systems. The microbes within these ecosystems determine whether the peatlands remain vast carbon reservoirs or become sources of emissions that accelerate climate change. </p>

<p>These microbes perform a dual function. Under stable conditions, they help store carbon, keeping it locked away in the peat and reducing the risks associated with climate change. </p>



<p>However, environmental shifts, such as drought and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-extremes-in-2024-what-have-we-learned/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rising temperatures</a>, can activate these microbes in ways that lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions. If peatlands dry out or are disturbed, these organisms accelerate the release of stored carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.</p>

<p>The microbes identified in the study are found in the&nbsp;Pastaza-Marañón Foreland Basin, one of the most extensive peatland regions in the northwestern Amazon rainforest of Peru. </p>



<p>Spanning approximately&nbsp;100,000 square kilometers, this area contains vast stretches of flooded rainforest and swamps underlain by ancient peat. These peatlands store around&nbsp;3.1 billion tons of carbon, roughly double the carbon held in all the world’s forests combined.</p>



<p>Despite their immense importance, these peatlands face increasing threats from climate change and human activity. Shifts in rainfall patterns and rising temperatures can dry out the peat, changing the microbial activity and turning these carbon sinks into carbon sources. </p>



<p>Deforestation, mining, and land-use changes further disrupt the natural equilibrium, accelerating the release of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The microbial universe of the Amazon peatlands is vast in space and time, has been hidden by their remote locations, and has been severely under-studied in their local and global contributions," said Hinsby Cadillo Quiroz, corresponding author of the study and researcher at <a href="https://www.asu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ASU</a>’s Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology.</p>



<p>“Our work is finding incredible organisms adapted to this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-added-41-extra-days-of-dangerous-heat-in-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment</a>, and several of them provide unique and important services - from carbon stabilization or recycling to carbon monoxide detoxification and others."</p>

<p>For centuries, tropical peatlands have functioned as reliable carbon sinks, absorbing more carbon than they release. <p>According to the study, continued human-caused disruptions could result in the release of 500 million tons of carbon by the end of the century - an amount equivalent to 5% of the world’s annual fossil fuel emissions. Such an outcome would significantly amplify global warming and accelerate environmental changes worldwide.</p>



<p>The researchers emphasize the urgent need for sustainable land management strategies to prevent these carbon-rich ecosystems from turning into major emission sources. <p>Artificial intelligence (AI) experts are abuzz about a new multimodal generative language model that may change how we think about proteins. </p>



<p>Scientists have spent years searching for better ways to predict and design these tiny building blocks of life.</p>



<p>Yet, progress always felt like tiptoeing around a vast ocean. Now, a tool known as ESM3 has arrived. It is generating a fresh wave of excitement for anyone interested in uncovering uncharted protein varieties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-esm3-and-protein-science">ESM3 and protein science</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ads0018" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESM3</a> can learn from protein sequences, structural information, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-life-begins-egg-sperm-and-a-covert-team-of-proteins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">functional annotations</a> at the same time, which broadens what it can “understand.” Previous models mostly looked at sequences alone.</p>



<p>This more robust approach gave the <a href="https://github.com/evolutionaryscale/esm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">developers</a> a chance to encode intricate biological knowledge in a single model with an impressive 98 billion parameters. </p>



<p>Thomas Hayes from <a href="https://forge.evolutionaryscale.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EvolutionaryScale Forge</a> and colleagues used this model to produce a fluorescent protein with a genetic sequence that is far removed from anything seen before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leaping-through-time">Leaping through time</h2>



<p>“We found a bright fluorescent protein at a far distance (58% sequence identity) from known fluorescent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/futuristic-food-supply-transforming-co2-into-protein/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proteins</a>, which we estimate is equivalent to simulating five hundred million years of evolution,” said Thomas Hayes, who led the study.</p>



<p>This method explores sequence space far beyond the scope of typical lab experiments. While labs traditionally direct mutations step by step, ESM3 can jump to regions of protein space that look like they arose eons ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-analyzing-billions-of-proteins">AI analyzing billions of proteins</h2>



<p>The training <a href="https://www.fpbase.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">data</a> for ESM3 is unusually large. Its developers compiled 771 billion unique tokens from around 3.15 billion protein sequences, 236 million three-dimensional structures, and 539 million annotated functions.</p>



<p>This variety helps the model see patterns that might otherwise remain hidden. It also offers a view of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/junk-proteins-responsible-for-aging-cause-als/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">different proteins</a> fit together and carry out biological tasks.</p>



<p>This depth of insight has led to speculation that ESM3 may help us fill gaps in our knowledge of how proteins fold and what structural elements matter most.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-fluorescent-proteins-matter">Why fluorescent proteins matter</h2>



<p>Fluorescent proteins light up under specific conditions, making them indispensable in microscopy and related imaging. They help scientists see inside cells and observe processes that used to be invisible.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
