<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>Gender wage gaps aren't just a concern for adults. Recent studies show that these inequities begin to form much earlier.</p>



<p>In a study from NYU, researchers have found that boys and girls as young as six years old already exhibit signs of the wage gap, thus perpetuating the cycle of economic disparity.</p>



<p>The experts found that boys tend to value their worth more - asking for bigger rewards for the same work- while girls tend to undervalue their worth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-boys-overestimate-their-abilities">Boys overestimate their abilities </h2>



<p>The wage gap isn't just about work. It's about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-we-see-the-world-based-on-what-we-expect-to-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">perception</a>. How much do you think you're worth? </p>



<p>It turns out that boys estimate themselves to be worth more than girls do, even when performing the same activities. They don't just think they're worth more - they ask for more too.</p>



<p>“Our findings suggest that boys tend to overestimate their abilities compared to girls - and relative to their actual performance. This inflated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-digital-technology-influence-our-sense-of-self/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">self-perception</a> may lead boys to feel more entitled to push the boundaries during negotiations,” explained Sophie Arnold, a doctoral student at <a href="https://www.nyu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-boys-and-girls-same-work-different-pay">Boys and girls: Same work, different pay?</h2>



<p>The research was focused on boys and girls who were between six and nine years old. The children were introduced to hypothetical scenarios where they could negotiate bonuses with a teacher or a neighbor for completing tasks.</p>



<p>The tasks were identical, and both boys and girls believed they would face little backlash for negotiation and would receive similar rewards.</p>



<p>When asked to identify images rapidly on a computer screen, boys and girls performed the same. After the task, the children were informed that they were due to receive a bonus: pictures of animals.</p>



<p>When asked how many pictures they thought they deserved, boys asked for larger bonuses than girls, even after performing at the same level. And this wasn't a slight difference. A typical boy asked for more bonus pictures than about 65% of the girls did.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-perception">The power of perception </h2>



<p>Boys thought they did better than girls, even though the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-sleep-transforms-brain-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">performance</a> was equal. And those boys who believed they did better were more likely to negotiate for higher bonuses.</p>



<p>This suggests that one key to understanding the wage gap may involve focusing on perception - not ability.</p>



<p>“Boys leveraged their perceptions of how common and permissible it is to ask for more, while girls did not,” explained Katherine McAuliffe, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-the-wage-gap">Addressing the wage gap</h2>



<p>Understanding the early roots of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-children-learn-gender-stereotypes-from-storybooks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gender</a> wage gap can help us shape strategies and policies that tackle the issue head-on.</p>



<p>It's not enough to simply address wage disparities among adults. We need to tackle the problem at its source - in childhood.</p>



<p>Addressing the early emergence of the gender pay gap requires targeted interventions to boost girls' <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/power-posing-gives-children-an-instant-confidence-boost/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">confidence</a> and negotiation skills. Experts suggest that parents and educators play a critical role in shaping how children perceive their worth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-the-cycle">Breaking the cycle</h2>



<p>Encouraging girls to advocate for themselves and providing positive reinforcement for negotiating can help close the gap before it widens.</p>



<p>Structured activities that teach financial literacy and negotiation techniques tailored for young children could equip girls with the tools they need to value their contributions appropriately.</p>



<p>Schools can also incorporate lessons that highlight successful female role models who have broken barriers in their respective fields, thus inspiring young girls to challenge societal expectations.</p>



<p>By normalizing self-advocacy and negotiation from an early age, both boys and girls can learn to approach opportunities with equal confidence and ambition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-media-and-society">The role of media and society</h2>



<p>Beyond individual efforts, societal and media representations contribute significantly to the early development of gendered perceptions of worth. </p>



<p>Studies suggest that traditional portrayals of gender roles in media often reinforce the idea that boys should aim higher and ask for more, while girls are encouraged to be accommodating and grateful for what they receive. </p>



<p>Cartoons, books, and movies often depict male characters in leadership and negotiation roles, while female characters take on supportive, nurturing roles.</p>



<p>Addressing this requires a cultural shift in how we represent gender in media, in addition to encouraging narratives that showcase equality in leadership and success.</p>



<p>Parents and educators can introduce children to diverse media that challenge these stereotypes and promote the idea that ambition and self-advocacy are valuable traits for everyone, regardless of gender. </p>



<p>The earlier these ideas are introduced, the more likely they are to influence long-term perceptions and behaviors.</p>

<p>A team of scientists has recreated the face of an ancient human ancestor that might offer a fresh glimpse of our distant past. This reconstructed visage of "Dragon Man" is linked to a group of early humans called the Denisovans, who roamed parts of Asia for thousands of years. </p>



<p>Researchers believe these individuals may have handed down bits of genetic material that shaped the course of modern human evolution by helping our ancestors to adjust to different landscapes and climates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dragon-man-and-the-denisovans">Dragon Man and the Denisovans</h2>



<p><a href="https://gurche.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John Gurche</a>, working with National Geographic, is the paleoartist behind this striking portrait. Denisovans are known mainly from a sparse record of fossils and DNA first extracted in 2010 from a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0455-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">finger bone</a> in Siberia.</p>



<p>Scientists say these ancient humans lived between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/115000-year-old-human-footprints-found-alathar-lake-arabian-peninsula/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">200,000 and 25,000 years ago</a>, crossed paths with <em>Homo sapiens</em>, and left us with genetic traces seen today in populations across Southeast Asia and Oceania. </p>



<p>Neanderthals and these early humans are our closest extinct relatives, and they likely contributed to our ability to move into and adapt to new areas of the globe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-harbin-skull-matters">Why the Harbin skull matters</h2>



<p>A laborer in northeastern China uncovered a remarkably complete fossil many years ago, which became known as the <a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/stunning-dragon-man-skull-may-be-elusive-denisovan-or-new-species-human" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harbin skull</a>. </p>



<p>Some experts suspect it could have belonged to a Denisovan because it bears certain resemblances to a 160,000-year-old <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/01/science/denisovans-tibet-jawbone-dna.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jawbone</a> that was discovered on the Tibetan Plateau.</p>

<p>That jawbone, found in <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/05/denisovan-jawbone-roof-world/588442/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Xiahe Cave</a>, could not be used to extract DNA evidence, but researchers used a method called paleoproteomics to determine its lineage.</p>



<p>Because the Harbin fossil dates back roughly 150,000 years and was located in the same broad region where Denisovans once roamed, many scientists think it may be the most complete example of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elusive people</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-from-denisovan-s-face">Clues from Denisovan's face</h2>



<p>Gurche built his <a href="https://youtu.be/eatqu7hWw5g?si=1Nav7LXrwy-Z98qU" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a> by starting with a plastic replica of the Harbin skull, which he studied to gauge features like overall jaw breadth and prominent brow.&nbsp;</p>



<p>His aim was “To get as close as I could to looking into the eyes of these extinct species,” he told <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/other-human-species-evolution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Geographic</a>.<br><br>He estimated eye size by referencing the ratio of eyeball diameter to eye socket size that African apes and modern humans share, then used markings on the fossil to place chewing muscles in the right spots.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dragon-man-s-head-and-nose-shape">Dragon Man's head and nose shape</h2>



<p>Studying the bone structure gave Gurche clues about the nose’s width and protrusion. </p>



<p>Scientists often rely on similar methods for ancient reconstructions, since cartilage does not survive in fossils. </p>

<p>Their logic stems from comparing multiple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-wooden-structure-completely-rewrites-early-human-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hominin species</a> and applying standard patterns of human and ape anatomy. </p>



<p>By layering muscle over the replicated skull, Gurche produced a model with a wide mouth, a robust brow, and a braincase in the ballpark of a modern human’s - traits that underscore both our shared lineage and the intriguing diversity of this lost group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-travel-and-interbreeding">Evidence of travel and interbreeding</h2>



<p>Denisovans likely ventured far, with fossils and DNA traces turning up from Siberia to Southeast Asia. </p>



<p>Some experts point to strong signs that they interbred with <em>Homo sapiens</em>, possibly boosting our ancestors’ ability to cope with unfamiliar altitudes and diseases.</p>



<p>The story goes that our forebears met these other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humans</a>, passed along genes that improved survival, and then forged onward to inhabit new territories. </p>



<p>However, we still do not know why Denisovans themselves vanished, or how they managed to cover such large distances in eras when travel was slow and difficult.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-for-dragon-man-and-denisovans">Next steps for Dragon Man and Denisovans</h2>



<p>Experts say that solving the mystery of how these people journeyed across thousands of miles - and figuring out why they vanished - requires more fossils. </p>

<p>Compared to Neanderthals, Denisovan remains are exceptionally scarce, which is why the Harbin skull’s possible Denisovan link has excited many anthropologists. </p>



<p>Any additional finds, such as teeth or skull fragments, can help refine our picture of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/homo-juluensis-new-human-species-vanished-just-fifty-thousand-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient relatives</a> and fill in details about their environment, social behavior, and diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-glimpse-into-the-past">A glimpse into the past</h2>



<p>In February 2025, National Geographic featured Gurche’s Denisovan model, marking a milestone in our understanding of who these people were. Some see this lifelike creation as a vital leap for anyone curious about human origins.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The crossbreeding evidence, the scattered remains, and now this reconstructed face provide a chance to reflect on how many human groups once shared our planet. </p>



<p>The Denisovans’ disappearance still mystifies scientists, but every new bit of data reveals more about their place in our lineage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-dragon-man-and-denisovans">Understanding Dragon Man and Denisovans</h2>



<p>While we might never get every answer about the Denisovans, the puzzle pieces we do have hint at a world filled with varied human populations. </p>



<p>Each group may have contributed to the genetic tapestry that makes our species what it is today. </p>



<p>The Harbin skull’s similarities to that jawbone in Xiahe Cave underscore how a single fossil find can reshape our thinking on early humans. </p>



<p>As more studies zero in on these and other artifacts, a fuller narrative of the Denisovans’ story may surface - one that reminds us of our interwoven past.</p>

<p>Phillip Island’s little penguins - famous for their nightly waddle from the ocean to their burrows - have love lives that are far more complex than they appear. </p>



<p>While penguins are often thought to mate for life, new research from Monash University and Phillip Island Nature Parks reveals a different reality.</p>



<p>The researchers found that little penguins often divorce and find new mates if they are not satisfied with their reproductive success. However, this decision comes with risks, as higher divorce rates can lead to lower breeding success in the following season.</p>



<p>This remarkable study, published in the journal <em>Ecology and Evolution</em>, sheds new light on the intricate social behaviors of these beloved seabirds.</p>



<p>Over more than a decade, the researchers tracked hundreds of penguin pairs to better understand what drives their mating decisions and how those choices impact the overall health of the colony.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-love-loss-and-breeding">Love, loss, and breeding</h2>



<p>For 13 breeding seasons, the scientists followed nearly 1,000 penguin pairs on Phillip Island, recording their mating patterns, breakups, and the success of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emperor-penguins-are-struggling-to-survive-as-sea-ice-vanishes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">offspring</a>.</p>



<p>The team documented 250 divorces during the study period and found that the colony's reproductive success declined in years when divorce rates were high.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, these breakups had a greater impact on breeding success than environmental factors such as food availability or habitat conditions. While environmental pressures certainly influence penguin survival, the study suggests that social dynamics play an equally - if not more - important role in shaping the colony’s future.</p>



<p>Professor Richard Reina, who has dedicated 20 years to studying Phillip Island’s penguins, explains that their relationships are more fluid than people often assume.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bad-breeding-season-for-penguins">Bad breeding season for penguins</h2>

<p>"In good times, they largely stick with their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/enhanced-monitoring-of-emperor-penguins-can-help-us-save-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">partners</a>, although there's often a bit of hanky-panky happening on the side," Professor Reina said. "However, after a poor reproductive season, they may try to find a new partner for the next season to increase their breeding success."</p>

<p>This suggests that little penguins are strategic in their partnerships, evaluating past breeding success when deciding whether to stay or leave a mate. </p>



<p>If a pair struggles to raise chicks, one or both partners may seek a more promising partner in the hopes of producing more offspring. However, this gamble does not always pay off. </p>



<p>The researchers found that penguins who switched mates often had lower breeding success in their next attempt, indicating that the process of re-pairing might come at a cost.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-penguin-divorce-means-for-conservation">What penguin divorce means for conservation</h2>



<p>Phillip Island is home to the world's largest colony of little penguins, with around 37,000 individuals calling the island home. </p>



<p>The world-famous Penguin Parade draws thousands of visitors each year, eager to watch these charming birds return from the ocean at dusk. However, ensuring the long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-artificial-nests-help-save-african-penguins/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survival of the colony</a> requires a deeper understanding of their behaviors and breeding patterns.</p>

<p>The Earth is a water planet, with over 71% of its surface covered by oceans. These vast bodies of water play a crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate, influencing weather patterns and distributing heat.</p>



<p>One of the most significant systems within this global ocean network is the&nbsp;Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a massive conveyor belt of currents that moves warm and cold water between the tropics, poles, and continents.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-amoc-on-climate">Impact of AMOC on climate</h2>



<p>The AMOC has a profound impact on global weather and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/collapse-of-main-atlantic-ocean-circulaton-current-amoc-is-already-happening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>. It helps keep European winters milder, affects monsoon patterns in Africa and Asia, and supports marine ecosystems that millions of people depend on for food and livelihoods. </p>



<p>However, scientists have long feared that climate change, particularly the melting of polar ice sheets, could weaken or even collapse the AMOC. </p>



<p>A decline in the AMOC would lead to extreme weather shifts, including more severe storms, colder winters in some regions, and dramatic sea level rise along the U.S. East Coast. A complete collapse would be even more catastrophic, potentially triggering irreversible changes to the global climate.</p>



<p>Recent research, however, suggests that the AMOC may be more stable than previously thought. A study by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) challenges earlier claims that the AMOC has been weakening over the past several decades.</p>



<p>The findings indicate that, contrary to previous studies, the AMOC has not declined over the last 60 years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-amoc-stability">New perspective on AMOC stability</h2>



<p>For years, scientists have attempted to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-current-system-may-collapse-by-2037/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">track changes</a> in the AMOC by analyzing&nbsp;sea surface temperature (SST) data. </p>



<p>A 2018 study, which concluded that the AMOC had significantly weakened over the past 70 years, relied heavily on this approach. </p>



<p>However, researchers from WHOI now argue that SST-based reconstructions are less reliable than initially thought. Instead of using sea surface temperature as a proxy, they examined&nbsp;air-sea heat fluxes, which measure the exchange of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere.</p>



<p>Nicholas P. Foukal, adjunct scientist at <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/who-we-are/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHOI</a> and assistant professor at the University of Georgia, emphasized that the AMOC’s status today is different from what was previously believed. </p>



<p>"Our paper says that the Atlantic overturning has not declined yet. That doesn't say anything about its future, but it doesn't appear the anticipated changes have occurred yet."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-amoc-behavior">Analyzing AMOC behavior</h2>



<p>To improve the accuracy of their study, the researchers used&nbsp;data from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), a collection of advanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-and-arctic-mixing-is-crucial-for-earths-climate-stability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> models developed by the&nbsp;World Climate Research Program. </p>



<p>The team analyzed 24 different climate simulations, which allowed them to refine their understanding of how the AMOC has behaved over time. The findings indicate that the AMOC remains stable and has not shown any long-term weakening over the past six decades.</p>



<p>Jens Terhaar, a senior scientist at the University of Bern, explained why the new method was necessary. "We've learned that sea surface temperature doesn't work as well as initially thought," he said. </p>



<p>By focusing on air-sea heat fluxes instead, the researchers were able to build a more reliable picture of how the AMOC has evolved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-air-sea-heat-fluxes-matter">Why air-sea heat fluxes matter</h2>



<p>The AMOC plays a key role in moving warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, where it releases heat into the atmosphere. This process helps regulate the climate of many regions. </p>



<p>When the AMOC is strong, more heat is transferred from the ocean to the air. By measuring these&nbsp;air-sea heat exchanges, the researchers could track changes in AMOC strength with greater confidence.</p>



<p>Linus Vogt, a scientist at <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne Université</a>, highlighted the significance of these findings. "Based on the results, the AMOC is more stable than we thought. This might mean that the AMOC isn't as close to a tipping point as previously suggested." </p>



<p>The research team concluded that&nbsp;the AMOC has remained steady between 1963 and 2017, reinforcing the idea that its collapse is not imminent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-the-future">What this means for the future</h2>



<p>Despite these findings, the study does not suggest that the AMOC is invariable. Nearly all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/collapse-of-major-ocean-system-would-cause-weather-chaos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> models agree that the AMOC will slow down in the future due to global warming. The real question is whether it will weaken gradually or collapse suddenly.</p>



<p>Foukal emphasized that the AMOC’s future remains uncertain. "It's almost unanimous at this point that the Atlantic overturning will slow in the future, but whether or not it will collapse is still up for debate. This work indicates that there is still time to act before we reach this potential tipping point."</p>



<p>While this study provides reassurance that we are not yet at a crisis point, it does not eliminate the long-term risks. </p>



<p>As the planet continues to warm, melting&nbsp;polar ice sheets will introduce large amounts of freshwater into the North Atlantic, disrupting the delicate balance that keeps the AMOC functioning. </p>



<p>If too much freshwater enters the system, the AMOC could weaken rapidly, leading to dramatic shifts in global weather patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncertainties-and-limitations">Uncertainties and limitations</h2>



<p>As with all climate research, this study has limitations. The findings rely on&nbsp;proxy data, meaning they are based on indirect measurements rather than direct observations of AMOC strength. </p>



<p>Air-sea heat flux measurements from past decades are limited, which introduces some uncertainty into the results. However, the researchers believe their approach provides a&nbsp;more accurate reconstruction of AMOC behavior&nbsp;than previous methods.</p>



<p>Jens Terhaar acknowledged these limitations but remained confident in the study’s conclusions. "A decline in AMOC over the last 60 years seems very unlikely," he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bigger-picture">The bigger picture</h2>



<p>If the AMOC were to collapse, the consequences would be devastating. Scientists predict that such a shutdown could lead to harsher winters in Europe, more intense hurricanes in the Atlantic, and major disruptions to monsoon systems in Africa and Asia. </p>



<p>Additionally, the U.S. East Coast would experience rapid sea level rise, threatening major cities like New York and Miami.</p>



<p>Given these potential risks, continued monitoring of the AMOC is essential. While this study suggests that we&nbsp;still have time to act, it reinforces the urgency of addressing climate change. </p>



<p>Reducing carbon emissions and slowing global warming remain critical to ensuring that the AMOC does not reach an irreversible tipping point.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>The AMOC is one of the most important components of the global climate system. While past research suggested it was already in decline, this new study challenges that idea. </p>



<p>Instead, the AMOC appears to have remained stable over the past 60 years. This does not mean that the AMOC is safe forever, but it does suggest that we may have more time than previously thought to prevent a worst-case scenario.</p>



<p>The future of the AMOC - and the climate as a whole - depends on human action. The world must continue to study, monitor, and mitigate climate change to ensure that this crucial ocean current remains stable for generations to come.</p>

<p>A deadly bird flu outbreak has devastated U.S. poultry farms, leading to the loss of over 20 million egg-laying chickens in the last quarter alone. This marks the most severe blow to America’s egg supply since the outbreak began in 2022. </p>



<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the staggering toll includes not only birds that succumbed to the virus but also those culled to prevent further spread. The consequences have been dire, leading to record-high egg prices across all production systems, including conventional, cage-free, and certified organic.</p>



<p>The federal government has allocated $1.25 billion to compensate farmers for their losses, aiming to encourage prompt reporting of infections and curb the virus’s expansion. </p>



<p>This financial support highlights the scale of the crisis, as poultry farmers struggle to maintain operations in the face of widespread culling and biosecurity challenges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bird-flu-is-severe-in-the-u-s">Bird flu is severe in the U.S.</h2>



<p>Bird flu <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-virus-preparing-for-tomorrow-despite-minimal-risk-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outbreaks</a> tend to peak during the winter months as wild birds migrate south, bringing the virus with them. </p>



<p>Cooler temperatures allow the virus to survive longer in the environment, increasing the likelihood of transmission among poultry flocks. However, this season has seen an alarming development: the virus has jumped beyond poultry and into dairy herds.</p>



<p>Hundreds of infected dairy herds have been identified, with contaminated raw milk acting as a vehicle for transmission. </p>



<p>The virus spreads through contact with farmers’ clothing, shared equipment, and infected animals moving between farms. The rapid expansion into dairy livestock has raised new concerns about the virus’s adaptability and potential risks to food safety.</p>



<p>California has been particularly hard-hit, prompting the state to declare a state of emergency. The crisis has affected both small and large-scale poultry farms, leading to widespread economic strain and disruptions in the supply chain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-is-bird-flu-dangerous-to-humans">Is bird flu dangerous to humans?</h2>



<p>While bird flu remains primarily an animal health crisis, human infections have occurred. </p>



<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href="https://www.cdc.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CDC</a>) has reported 66 human cases of bird flu in the U.S. since the virus emerged. Most of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/efforts-to-control-bird-flu-are-not-working-are-humans-next/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cases</a> have been mild, affecting farm workers with direct exposure to infected poultry or dairy animals.</p>



<p>However, a tragic recent development has heightened concerns. A fatal case was reported in Louisiana, linked to the D1.1 strain of the virus that has been spreading in wild birds. This marks a rare but serious escalation, prompting renewed attention to the virus’s potential human health impacts.</p>



<p>Despite this, researchers believe the strain responsible for many human infections has mutated to be less severe in people compared to other circulating strains. While this offers some reassurance, experts continue to monitor the situation closely, as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-mutations-found-in-first-severe-u-s-human-case/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a> can evolve rapidly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-debate-over-a-bird-flu-vaccine">Debate over a bird flu vaccine</h2>



<p>In response to the escalating outbreak, the <a href="https://www.usda.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USDA</a> has announced plans to stockpile a new poultry vaccine targeting the D1.1 strain. However, officials remain cautious about widespread vaccination. </p>



<p>There are concerns that vaccinating poultry could mask symptoms, making it harder to detect outbreaks. Additionally, some countries may refuse to import vaccinated poultry, fearing the virus could still be present in asymptomatic birds.</p>



<p>The poultry industry remains divided on the issue. <p>For now, biosecurity measures, early detection, and culling remain the primary tools for controlling the virus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threats-to-household-pets">Threats to household pets</h2>



<p>The bird flu virus is no longer just a threat to chickens and cows - it has already infected household pets. In two separate incidents, raw pet food made from infected animals was linked to the deaths of cats in California and Oregon.</p>



<p>This highlights how the virus can spread through contaminated food products, raising concerns about broader risks to domestic animals.</p>



<p>“All recent detections of H5N1 [bird flu] in cats had these things in common: the infected cats ate wild birds, unpasteurized milk, raw poultry, and/or raw poultry pet food,” noted an FDA spokesperson.</p>



<p>This development raises alarms about food safety and the importance of avoiding raw, unpasteurized products that could carry the virus. Experts warn pet owners to be vigilant and avoid feeding their animals raw poultry or unpasteurized dairy products.</p>

<p>For now, experts emphasize the need for strict biosecurity measures, rapid detection, and ongoing research into the virus’s evolution. Consumers can also take precautions by purchasing pasteurized dairy products, avoiding raw pet food, and staying informed about the latest developments.</p>



<p>As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: bird flu is no longer just a poultry problem. It’s a growing public health and economic challenge that requires continued vigilance and action.</p>

<p>Recent modifications in the global water cycle are a significant concern, according to a study conducted by NASA scientists.</p>



<p>Over the past two decades, the experts have observed an unprecedented shift in the water cycle - which they believe is largely influenced by human activities such as farming.</p>



<p>These changes are not just an environmental concern but also impact ecosystems and pose challenges to water management.</p>



<p>"We established with data assimilation that human intervention in the global water cycle is more significant than we thought," said Sujay Kumar, a scientist at <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center</a>.</p>



<p>The paper was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-water-cycle-changes">Impacts of water cycle changes </h2>



<p>Radical shifts in the water cycle can have serious implications for communities all over the globe.</p>



<p>Traditional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/californias-streamside-forests-are-threatened-by-water-management/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water management</a> practices like flood infrastructure or developing early drought indicators are usually based on the concept that the water cycle fluctuates only within a certain limit. </p>



<p>“This may no longer hold true for some regions," said study lead author Wanshu Nie.</p>



<p>"We hope that this research will serve as a guide map for improving how we assess water resources variability and plan for sustainable resource management, especially in areas where these changes are most significant.”</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-a-major-influence-on-the-global-water-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human impacts on the water cycle</a> are perceptible in regions like North China, which is experiencing an ongoing drought. But vegetation in many areas continues to thrive, partially because producers continue to irrigate their land by pumping more water from groundwater storage, noted Kumar.</p>



<p>These interlinked human interventions often have intricate impacts on other water cycle variables like evapotranspiration and runoff.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-shifts-in-the-water-cycle">Distinct shifts in the water cycle</h2>



<p>Nie and her team focused on three kinds of shifts in the cycle. First, they analyzed a change in trends - such as a reduction in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pumping-too-much-groundwater-affects-earths-spin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater</a> reservoirs.</p>



<p>Second, the team examined a shift in seasonal patterns like the typical growing season starting earlier in the year, or a premature snowmelt. The researchers also looked for changes in extreme events, such as “100-year floods” happening more frequently.</p>



<p>The scientists used remote sensing data from 2003 to 2020 that was collected by different NASA satellites.</p>



<p>These included precipitation data from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission satellite, a soil moisture dataset from the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative, and terrestrial water storage data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellites. </p>



<p>The researchers obtained data about vegetation health from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite instrument.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integrating-human-activities-into-future-models">Integrating human activities into future models</h2>



<p>"This paper combines several years of our team’s effort in developing capabilities on satellite data analysis, allowing us to precisely simulate continental water fluxes and storages across the planet," noted study co-author Augusto Getirana.</p>



<p>The findings of the study suggest that the Earth system models currently used to predict the future global water cycle should be revised to factor in the ongoing effects of human activities. </p>



<p>With more data and improved models, producers and water resource managers could better understand and plan effectively for the “new normal” of their local water conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interconnected-nature-of-the-water-cycle">Interconnected nature of the water cycle</h2>



<p>The water cycle is a delicate and interconnected system that regulates the movement of water through the atmosphere, land, and oceans. </p>



<p>Human activities, such as agriculture, urbanization, and industrial processes, are increasingly influencing this natural balance. </p>



<p>When groundwater is over-extracted for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-irrigation-could-feed-feed-1-4-billion-more-people/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">irrigation</a> or urban use, it disrupts the natural recharge process, leading to depletion and long-term consequences for regional water availability. </p>



<p>Similarly, deforestation and land-use changes can alter precipitation patterns and runoff, exacerbating the risks of both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-risk-of-summer-droughts-linked-to-changes-in-river-flow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a> and floods.</p>



<p>Climate change further compounds these human influences by intensifying weather extremes and shifting regional precipitation patterns. Warmer temperatures accelerate evaporation rates, altering the distribution of water resources across the planet.</p>



<p>This has far-reaching consequences for ecosystems, food security, and the sustainability of freshwater supplies.</p>

<p>In an extraordinary blend of history, science, and detective work, paleontologists have identified a new species of predatory dinosaur in lost photos.</p>



<p>Named&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor markgrafi</em>, this massive theropod roamed the Earth approximately 95 million years ago, during the mid-Cretaceous period.</p>



<p>What makes this discovery particularly fascinating is that the original fossil was thought to be lost forever. It was excavated in Egypt’s Bahariya Oasis in 1914 and later stored in Munich. However, it was destroyed in World War II during an air raid.</p>



<p>The recent identification of this new species is the result of an innovative analysis of long-forgotten photographs taken before the fossil’s destruction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-one-of-the-largest-land-carnivores-in-history">One of the largest land carnivores in history</h2>



<p>The story of&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor</em>&nbsp;begins in the early 20th century with paleontologist Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach, a Munich-based scientist with a deep interest in North African <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tracks-discovered-on-uks-dinosaur-highway/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a>. </p>



<p>During an expedition in 1914, Stromer’s team unearthed the remains of a giant carnivorous dinosaur from the Bahariya Oasis in Egypt. The fossil was shipped to Germany and placed in the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology.</p>



<p>At the time, Stromer classified the specimen as&nbsp;<em>Carcharodontosaurus</em>, a genus of large theropods known for their shark-like teeth. He described it as one of the largest land carnivores in Earth's history, comparable in size to&nbsp;<em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em>, which would evolve several million years later in North America.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lost-dinosaur-fossil">Lost dinosaur fossil</h2>



<p>The fossil remained in Munich for decades until a devastating event altered its fate forever. On the night of July 21, 1944, an Allied bombing raid targeted the city, striking the Old Academy building where the Bavarian State Collection was housed. </p>



<p>A massive fire engulfed the facility, and the entire collection (including the Egyptian dinosaur fossils) was lost in the blaze. Only Stromer’s notes, a few illustrations, and some black-and-white photographs of the specimens survived.</p>



<p>With the physical evidence gone, <em>Carcharodontosaurus</em> faded into obscurity - its existence known only through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/north-americas-oldest-dinosaur-is-completely-rewriting-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">historical records</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resurrecting-a-dinosaur-from-the-archives">Resurrecting a dinosaur from the archives</h2>



<p>More than 80 years later, paleontologists have rewritten this chapter of history. Maximilian Kellermann, a master’s student at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (<a href="https://www.lmu.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LMU</a>), made a remarkable discovery while researching archival material.</p>



<p>He unearthed previously unknown photographs of the original <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-evolved-feathers-for-much-more-than-just-flying/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil</a> taken before its destruction in 1944. These images, preserved in university archives, provided an unexpected window into the past.</p>



<p>“What we saw in the historical images surprised us all. The Egyptian dinosaur fossil depicted there differs significantly from more recent <em>Carcharodontosaurus</em> finds in Morocco. Stromer's original classification was thus incorrect," said Kellermann. </p>



<p>"We identified a completely different, previously unknown predatory dinosaur species here and named it <em>Tameryraptor markgrafi</em>."</p>



<p>Kellermann collaborated with renowned dinosaur specialist Professor Oliver Rauhut from the SNSB-<a href="https://bspg.snsb.de/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BSPG</a> and Dr. Elena Cuesta from LMU.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that the fossil possessed unique anatomical features that set it apart from&nbsp;<em>Carcharodontosaurus</em>. Among its distinguishing traits were symmetrical teeth and a prominent nasal horn, both of which indicated it was a new dinosaur species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-honoring-a-forgotten-fossil-hunter">Honoring a forgotten fossil hunter</h2>



<p>The new species was given the name&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor markgrafi</em>. The first part of the name,&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor</em>, references the ancient Egyptian term "Tamery," which means "the promised land." </p>



<p>This nod to Egypt’s historical significance highlights the dinosaur’s origins. The second part,&nbsp;<em>markgrafi</em>, honors Richard Markgraf, the fossil collector who originally excavated the specimen more than a century ago.</p>



<p>Despite its destruction, <em>Tameryraptor</em> has finally been recognized, bringing Markgraf’s discovery back into the scientific spotlight. The story also highlights the importance of Markgraf’s contributions, which were overshadowed by war and time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-north-africa-s-prehistoric-past">North Africa’s prehistoric past</h2>



<p>The identification of&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor markgrafi</em>&nbsp;challenges previous assumptions about North Africa’s Cretaceous dinosaur diversity. </p>



<p>For many years, paleontologists believed that&nbsp;<em>Carcharodontosaurus</em>&nbsp;dominated the region’s predatory ecosystem. However, the discovery of&nbsp;<em>Tameryraptor</em>&nbsp;suggests a more complex picture, with multiple large carnivorous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/qunkasaura-pintiquiniestra-new-sauropod-dinosaur-discovered-in-spain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a> coexisting.</p>



<p>"Presumably, the dinosaur fauna of North Africa was much more diverse than we previously thought. This work shows that it can be worthwhile for paleontologists to dig not only in the ground, but also in old archives," said Rauhut.</p>



<p>Interestingly, <em>Tameryraptor</em> appears to share evolutionary links with not only <em>Carcharodontosaurus</em> but also with Metriacanthosaurs, a group of predatory dinosaurs from Asia. This connection raises intriguing questions about dinosaur dispersal and migration patterns between continents during the Cretaceous period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-dinosaur-fossils-are-needed">More dinosaur fossils are needed</h2>



<p>While the rediscovery of the lost dinosaur from archival photographs is an incredible achievement, the researchers acknowledge that much remains unknown. Without physical fossils to study, some aspects of the dinosaur’s anatomy and classification remain uncertain.</p>



<p>"A more comprehensive assessment of the Cretaceous predatory dinosaur fauna from the Bahariya Oasis would require the recovery of more fossils from the site," noted Rauhut.</p>



<p>The Bahariya Oasis, once a hotbed of dinosaur discoveries, has been largely unexplored in modern times. Future expeditions to the region could yield new fossils that provide further insights into the prehistoric ecosystem. </p>



<p>Paleontologists hope that renewed interest in the area will lead to fresh discoveries that can complement the findings from Stromer’s lost collection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-lost-dinosaur-finds-its-place-in-history">A lost dinosaur finds its place in history</h2>

<p>Hummingbirds may be among the smallest birds in the world, but they endure some of the most grueling migrations. Some species travel more than 9,000 km (5,590 miles) annually, relying almost entirely on nectar from wildflowers to fuel their journeys. </p>



<p>This nectar is quickly converted into fat, which serves as their primary energy reserve. However, climate change and habitat loss are making the distribution of wildflowers along the birds' migratory routes increasingly unpredictable.</p>



<p>To cope with these challenges, hummingbirds rely on a remarkable physiological adaptation called torpor, a temporary hibernation-like state that allows them to conserve energy. </p>



<p>Understanding how and when hummingbirds use torpor is crucial for conservation efforts, especially as environmental changes continue to threaten their survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hummingbird-migration-and-food-availability">Hummingbird migration and food availability </h2>



<p>A recent study led by Shayne R. Halter, a Ph.D. candidate at The University of New Mexico (<a href="https://www.unm.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNM</a>), provides new insights into how hummingbirds regulate their energy reserves during migration.</p>



<p>The research was conducted in collaboration with UNM Professor Blair Wolf and <a href="https://www.uwyo.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Wyoming</a> Professor Emeritus Carlos Martinez del Rio.</p>



<p>Halter’s research focused on Rufous (<em>Selasphorus rufus</em>) and Calliope (<em>Selasphorus calliope</em>) hummingbirds migrating through New Mexico in the fall. </p>



<p>The goal was to determine the role of fat reserves in regulating torpor usage and how these tiny <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbird-wings-the-future-of-robotic-flight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> adjust their metabolism in response to uncertain food availability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conserving-energy-to-survive">Conserving energy to survive</h2>



<p>Torpor is a survival mechanism that allows hummingbirds to dramatically lower their metabolic rate and body temperature for several hours, typically overnight. Unlike hibernation, which lasts for days or months, torpor is temporary and allows the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbird-bills-are-an-evolutionary-wonder/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> to conserve energy when food sources are scarce.</p>



<p>"During torpor, hummingbirds are unaware of their surroundings, making them more vulnerable to predation and other risks. For this reason, torpor should only be used when needed," Shayne Halter explains.</p>



<p>Hummingbirds enter torpor when their body fat reserves are too low to sustain their high-energy needs through the night. Without it, they risk starving before sunrise, when they can begin feeding again. </p>



<p>Halter’s research identified a critical fat threshold that determines when a hummingbird will enter torpor. His findings show that hummingbirds initiate torpor when their fat levels drop below 500 milligrams at night and ensure they wake up with at least 180 milligrams of fat in the morning to sustain them until they find food. </p>



<p>If a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbirds-have-an-amazing-sense-of-touch-for-precise-navigation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> has enough fat, it will avoid torpor, since staying alert reduces the risk of predation. If food is scarce and fat reserves are low, the bird will enter torpor and adjust its duration to preserve a minimal morning fat reserve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-habitat-loss">Climate change and habitat loss</h2>



<p>Hummingbirds are facing increasing challenges due to climate change and habitat destruction. The southwestern United States, a critical migratory corridor, is experiencing rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and unpredictable nectar availability.</p>



<p>Land-use changes, such as urban development and the spread of invasive, non-nectar-producing plants, are further reducing food sources along their migration routes.</p>



<p>"Annual migrations are demanding events for hummingbirds and are often accompanied by high mortality rates. The arid southwest is becoming warmer and drier, and these conditions are already affecting the timing and distribution of nectar sources," noted Halter.</p>



<p>These environmental shifts may force hummingbirds to rely more on torpor, potentially altering their migration success rates and survival. If nectar becomes too scarce, more birds may struggle to maintain the fat reserves they need to sustain their journeys. </p>



<p>As their environment becomes increasingly unpredictable, their ability to adapt will be tested like never before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-the-health-of-hummingbirds">Monitoring the health of hummingbirds</h2>



<p>Halter’s study not only advances our understanding of hummingbird physiology but also provides a predictive model for conservation efforts. </p>



<p>By analyzing torpor frequencies, durations, and fat reserves, scientists can assess the ecological health of hummingbird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-hummingbirds-deal-with-their-need-for-flight-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a> and monitor how they are adapting to environmental changes.</p>



<p>A better understanding of how hummingbirds regulate energy during migration can help guide conservation strategies.</p>



<p>Protecting and restoring native wildflower habitats along migratory routes will be crucial for ensuring that hummingbirds have consistent food sources. Identifying key stopover sites where hummingbirds refuel and ensuring these locations remain rich in nectar-producing plants could further support their survival.</p>



<p>Researchers can also use Halter’s predictive model to determine how climate change might affect hummingbird migration patterns and energy balance in the future.</p>



<p>By providing critical data on how much energy hummingbirds need to survive and how they adapt to changing conditions, this research offers valuable insights for conservationists working to protect these tiny but resilient birds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-migrating-hummingbirds">Future of migrating hummingbirds</h2>



<p>Hummingbirds are an incredible example of nature’s adaptability. Despite their small size, they undertake some of the most demanding migrations in the animal kingdom. <p>However, as climate change and habitat loss continue to threaten their food supply, these birds may be forced to adapt in ways that could impact their long-term survival. </p>



<p>By understanding their energy needs and the role of torpor in their survival, we can take meaningful steps to protect these remarkable birds for generations to come. </p>

<p>Scientists have stumbled upon a trio of tiny dwarf galaxies located about 6.5 million light-years away from Earth.</p>



<p>Identified as Sculptor A, B, and C, these galaxies are known for their faintness. They form part of a galaxy cluster around NGC 300.</p>



<p>Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies typically contain just a few hundred to thousands of stars. By comparison, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newly-discovered-stars-milky-way-are-old-as-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a> has hundreds of billions of stars. </p>



<p>Dwarf galaxies are usually hidden by these brighter systems in the sky, which makes them significantly more challenging to locate. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-dwarf-galaxies-in-the-early-universe">Tiny dwarf galaxies in the early universe </h2>



<p>The research was led by David Sand, a professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona <a href="https://astro.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Steward Observatory</a>.</p>



<p>According to Professor Sand, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/dwarf-galaxy-i-zwicky-18-has-a-youthful-appearance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">petite galaxies</a> have a grand role to play. They are exceptionally old and serve as real-life time capsules, providing a unique insight into the early universe – a time when the first stars and galaxies were just beginning to form.</p>



<p>These galaxies help us fathom why certain cosmic masses stopped creating new stars and became "silent."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-a-needle-in-the-cosmic-haystack">Finding a needle in the cosmic haystack</h2>



<p>Uncovering these galaxies was no simple task. It called for a bit of old school, manual searching combined with modern technology. </p>



<p>While browsing through the DECam Legacy Survey's images, Professor Sand found the galaxies almost by chance during hours of searching.</p>



<p>One notable aspect of the Sculptor galaxies is their isolation, which places them far enough away from the influence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">larger galaxies</a> like the Milky Way.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ghost-towns-with-no-star-forming-fuel">Ghost towns with no star-forming fuel</h2>



<p>Taking a closer look at these galaxies using the Gemini South telescope, the astronomers found that they housed only very old stars and showed signs of halted star formation.</p>



<p>The galaxies essentially seemed like abandoned ghost towns – once vibrant and bustling, now quiet and deserted.</p>



<p>Some theories suggest that these galaxies may have lost their star-making ingredient, gas, which is vital for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/black-hole-triggers-the-birth-of-new-stars-in-nearby-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birth of new stars</a>.</p>



<p>"Gas is the crucial raw material required to coalesce and ignite the fusion of a new star. But ultra-faint dwarf galaxies just have too little gravity to hold on to this all-important ingredient, and it is easily lost when they are affected by nearby, massive galaxies," explained Professor Sand.</p>



<p>Ultimately, these galaxies were cut off from their star-creating gas either by the strong ultraviolet photons that filled the cosmos after the Big Bang, by energetic supernova explosions, or by the gravitational forces of larger, nearby galaxies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-mysteries-of-the-universe">Unraveling the mysteries of the universe </h2>



<p>As the Sculptor galaxies are quite isolated, it is unlikely that their gas was stolen by neighboring giants. This further supports the other explanations of their halted star formation.</p>



<p>Studying dwarf galaxies like the Sculptor trio could potentially allow us to connect the dots between the present-day structure of all galaxies and the earliest formations on a cosmic scale.</p>



<p>The experts plan to search for more "ghost town" galaxies. By leveraging machine learning tools, the research team aims to automate and speed up the discovery process.</p>



<p>The scientists believe that by understanding dwarf galaxies, we can unravel the mysteries of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fastest-feeding-black-hole-found-in-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early universe</a>.</p>

<p>Florida’s wetlands are home to two striking and often confused waterbirds - the&nbsp;anhinga&nbsp;and the&nbsp;double-crested cormorant. Both are expert divers that rely on their feet to propel themselves underwater. They are commonly seen perched on branches or docks with their wings spread wide to dry.</p>



<p>However, despite their similar appearances and behaviors, new research from the&nbsp;University of Miami&nbsp;reveals that these birds are quite different in their&nbsp;physiology, hunting techniques, and metabolism.</p>



<p>A research team led by&nbsp;Jeff White, a recent&nbsp;biology doctoral graduate, spent months studying these species to understand their unique adaptations.</p>

<p>"Cormorants have a really large muscle in their leg and are able to really prioritize storage of oxygen in their leg muscles," explained White, who is affiliated to the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Miami</a>. This muscle adaptation gives them an edge in deep-water environments, including&nbsp;coastaland&nbsp;oceanic waters.</p>



<p>In contrast, anhingas are stealthy ambush <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-wings-have-a-surprising-effect-on-island-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predators</a>. Rather than chasing fish, they wait patiently in shallow water, camouflaged among vegetation, until their prey swims close enough for a lightning-fast strike.</p>



<p>This sit-and-wait strategy is common among ambush predators like herons and alligators, but it is unusual among diving birds. By minimizing movement, anhingas conserve energy and use less oxygen than cormorants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-they-stay-underwater">How do they stay underwater? </h2>



<p>Both species dive for about&nbsp;two minutes at a time, but their bodies handle oxygen storage differently. Unlike ducks and other diving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-than-100-bird-species-have-been-lost-for-over-a-decade/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a>, anhingas and cormorants&nbsp;fully wet their feathers. </p>



<p>This reduces buoyancy and allows them to stay underwater more easily. However, their methods of&nbsp;oxygen management&nbsp;vary.</p>



<p>"They both must hold their breath to dive, so we observed how each of these species convert their oxygen stores into energy in the swimming and flying muscles," noted McCracken, a co-author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oxygen-use-of-anhingas-and-cormorants">Oxygen use of anhingas and cormorants</h2>



<p>Cormorants store&nbsp;most of their oxygen in their leg muscles, which power their&nbsp;aggressive swimming style. These&nbsp;large, oxygen-rich muscles&nbsp;allow them to&nbsp;generate bursts of speed&nbsp;and maneuver swiftly to catch prey. This trait aligns them more with deep-diving seabirds like penguins.</p>



<p>Anhingas, on the other hand, rely on neutral buoyancy, meaning they neither sink nor float. This allows them to remain motionless under the water without needing to swim to stay in place.</p>



<p>"They are the only aquatic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/terror-bird-phorusrhacid-discovery-was-largest-meat-eating-bird-of-its-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bird</a> I know of that can sit underwater without having to swim to stay in place," said White. This&nbsp;passive diving adaptation&nbsp;is&nbsp;unique among aquatic birds&nbsp;and helps anhingas hunt with minimal energy expenditure.</p>



<p>Additionally, anhingas have a&nbsp;low metabolism, which means they require&nbsp;less oxygen to generate energy. While cormorants prioritize storing oxygen in their muscles, anhingas make efficient use of the oxygen in their blood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flight-differences-soaring-vs-powerful-wingbeats">Flight differences: Soaring vs. powerful wingbeats</h2>



<p>Beyond their diving behaviors, the two species differ in&nbsp;flight mechanics. </p>



<p>Cormorants are&nbsp;strong fliers. Their powerful wing muscles allow them to&nbsp;fly quickly and with sustained flapping, making them more agile in the air. This strength is necessary since they often travel between freshwater and saltwater environments in search of food.</p>



<p>Anhingas, by contrast, are less suited for continuous flapping. Instead, they&nbsp;soar and glide, using&nbsp;thermals&nbsp;(rising air currents) to stay in the air with minimal effort. This flight style is similar to&nbsp;hawks and vultures, rather than the rapid, flapping flight of cormorants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-research">Significance of the research</h2>



<p>While this study sheds light on anhingas and cormorants, its implications&nbsp;reach far beyond ornithology. Understanding how these birds&nbsp;manage oxygen&nbsp;could offer insights into&nbsp;human physiology, exercise science, cardiovascular health, and metabolism.</p>



<p>"There might be benefits to understanding how other species can generate energy without oxygen," White noted. Some medical conditions and athletic performance studies could benefit from&nbsp;learning how these birds use oxygen efficiently.</p>



<p>Additionally, this research helps scientists&nbsp;better understand metabolism. Different species process nutrients and oxygen in distinct ways, and the anhinga’s ability to function&nbsp;with minimal oxygen use&nbsp;is a&nbsp;fascinating case study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-anhingas-and-cormorants">Future research on anhingas and cormorants</h2>



<p>Despite this latest research, anhingas remain one of the least studied aquatic birds. Jeff White hopes to continue his work to uncover more about their unique adaptations. He realized that scientists know surprisingly little about these birds, especially compared to other diving species.</p>



<p>Future studies could explore how anhingas achieve&nbsp;neutral buoyancy, allowing them to stay underwater without sinking or floating. Researchers also want to examine their&nbsp;metabolic rates&nbsp;to understand how they survive on lower oxygen levels compared to other diving birds. </p>



<p>Additionally, studying their&nbsp;evolutionary adaptations&nbsp;could reveal how they developed their distinct physiological traits over time.</p>



<p>Anhingas’ unique energy conservation and oxygen use strategies could also help scientists learn more about metabolism in other animals, including humans. Further research will help unravel the mysteries of this remarkable waterbird.</p>

<p>The debate about when our ancestors started eating meat has taken an unexpected turn. While we've long associated early human evolution with meat consumption, a recent study reveals that some of our earliest ancestors stuck to a mostly plant-based diet.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Tina Lüdecke from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany in collaboration with researchers from South Africa.</p>



<p>The findings challenge our previous assumptions about early hominin diets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teeth-hold-clues-of-ancient-diets">Teeth hold clues of ancient diets</h2>



<p>A team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.mpic.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Chemistry</a> in Germany and the University of the Witwatersrand (<a href="https://www.wits.ac.za" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wits University</a>) in South Africa analyzed nitrogen isotopes in the fossilized tooth enamel of seven <em>Australopithecus</em> individuals.</p>



<p>These fossils were recovered from the Sterkfontein Caves near Johannesburg, a site rich in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-species-of-human-ancestors-literally-crossed-paths-1-5-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early hominin</a> remains. </p>



<p>By comparing these isotopic signatures to those of coexisting animals - including herbivores like antelopes and monkeys, as well as carnivores such as hyenas and big cats - the scientists established the positrons of <em>Australopithecus</em> in the prehistoric food web.</p>



<p>The nitrogen isotope ratios in the&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus</em>&nbsp;teeth were consistently low, closely resembling those of plant-eating animals. This strongly suggests that these early human ancestors primarily consumed a plant-based diet and did not regularly eat meat. </p>



<p>While the researchers acknowledge that&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus</em>&nbsp;may have occasionally consumed animal proteins such as eggs or insects, their findings indicate that meat was not a significant part of their diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-based-vs-meat-diets">Plant-based vs. meat diets</h2>



<p>The key to this discovery lies in the analysis of nitrogen isotopes, which provide reliable indicators of an animal’s diet. When animals digest food, their bodies process nitrogen in a way that leaves distinct chemical traces. </p>



<p>Specifically, the ratio of heavy nitrogen isotopes (15N) to light nitrogen isotopes (14N) increases as one moves up the food chain. </p>



<p>Herbivores, which consume plants, have lower nitrogen isotope ratios, while carnivores have higher ratios because they consume herbivores.</p>



<p>"Tooth enamel is the hardest tissue of the mammalian body and can preserve the isotopic fingerprint of an animal's diet for millions of years," noted geochemist Tina Lüdecke.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nitrogen-isotopes-reveal-ancient-diets">Nitrogen isotopes reveal ancient diets</h2>



<p>By measuring nitrogen isotope ratios in fossilized tooth enamel, scientists can determine whether an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-discovery-anadoluvius-turkae-suggests-humans-originated-in-europe-not-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">organism</a> primarily consumed plants or animals. </p>



<p>While this method has been widely used to study the diets of modern animals and humans, it was previously limited to fossils only tens of thousands of years old due to the degradation of organic material over time. </p>



<p>However, Lüdecke and her team applied a breakthrough technique developed in Alfredo Martínez-García’s laboratory at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. This method allowed the researchers to extract nitrogen isotope data from fossilized tooth enamel that is millions of years old.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-meat-in-diets">Evolution of meat in diets</h2>



<p>One of the most significant aspects of this study is how it challenges existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theories</a> about the role of meat in human evolution. </p>



<p>Many researchers have theorized that the consumption of animal resources, especially meat, played a crucial role in the development of larger brains and more advanced tool-making abilities.</p>



<p>The protein and fat found in meat have been linked to the evolutionary increase in brain size seen in later hominins. However, direct evidence of when meat became a staple in the human diet has remained elusive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-australopithecus-did-not-eat-meat"><em>Australopithecus</em> did not eat meat</h2>



<p>The findings from this study suggest that&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus</em>&nbsp;did not regularly hunt or consume large mammals, unlike Neanderthals, who lived millions of years later and actively pursued large game. </p>



<p>This implies that the shift toward a meat-based diet occurred later in human evolution, possibly with the emergence of the genus&nbsp;<em>Homo</em>.</p>



<p>"This method opens up exciting possibilities for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazing-adaptation-early-humans-thrived-in-extreme-conditions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human evolution</a>," said Martínez-García. "It has the potential to answer crucial questions, for example, when did our ancestors begin to incorporate meat in their diet? And was the onset of meat consumption linked to an increase in brain volume?"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-major-breakthrough-in-dietary-research">Major breakthrough in dietary research</h2>



<p>This research represents a major breakthrough in the study of ancient diets. Previous studies relied on indirect evidence, such as tool use and wear patterns on teeth, to infer what early hominins ate. </p>



<p>However, by directly measuring nitrogen isotopes in fossilized tooth enamel, Lüdecke’s team has provided the most concrete evidence yet that&nbsp;<em>Australopithecus</em>was largely herbivorous.</p>



<p>"This work represents a huge step in extending our ability to better understand diets and trophic levels of all animals back into the scale of millions of years. The research provides clear evidence that its diet did not contain significant amounts of meat," said Professor Dominic Stratford, director of research at the Sterkfontein Caves.</p>



<p>"We are honored that the pioneering application of this new method was spearheaded at Sterkfontein, a site that continues to make fundamental contributions to science even 89 years after the first hominin fossils were discovered there by Robert Broom."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Lüdecke’s team now plans to expand their research by analyzing fossilized tooth enamel from other early hominin species across different time periods and geographic regions. </p>



<p>By collecting data from key fossil sites in eastern and southern Africa as well as Southeast Asia, they hope to better understand when and how meat consumption became a regular part of the human diet.</p>



<p>The research could help answer long-standing questions about whether the introduction of meat provided an evolutionary advantage.</p>



<p>Did meat consumption contribute to the development of larger brains? Did it play a role in social structures and hunting behaviors? These are the types of questions that future studies will seek to address.</p>



<p>The study, funded by the Max Planck Society and supported by the German Research Foundation’s Emmy Noether program, marks a major advancement in the field of paleoanthropology.</p>



<p>By applying cutting-edge scientific techniques to ancient fossils, researchers are now able to uncover new details about the dietary habits of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">distant ancestors</a>.</p>

<p>Scientists have been mapping changes in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, where glaciers are withdrawing at alarming rates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts used high-resolution satellite data to examine the edges of ice fields, revealing how one of the fastest-warming places on Earth continues to show visible marks of change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-patterns-of-glacier-retreat">Alarming patterns of glacier retreat</h2>



<p>According to the recent <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-55948-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>, 91% of Svalbard’s glaciers appear to be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellite-images-reveal-hidden-retreat-of-arctic-glaciers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shrinking</a>, with an overall area loss of more than 500 square miles since 1985.</p>



<p>These findings indicate that more than half of these ice masses show distinct seasonal cycles in how they fracture and roll into the surrounding seas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The scale of glacier retreats over the past few decades is astonishing,” noted Dr. Tian Li, senior research associate in the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/geography/research/bgc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glaciology Centre</a> at the University of Bristol.</p>



<p>Svalbard’s northern latitude and relatively low-altitude ice fields leave it open to creeping warmth from ocean currents, while the air above is heating up to <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/330857321_Climate_in_Svalbard_2100_Editors-a_knowledge_base_for_climate_adaptation_Title_Date" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seven times faster</a> than the global average.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cascade-of-changes-in-the-arctic">Cascade of changes in the Arctic</h2>



<p>The most striking acceleration in glacier retreat was pinpointed in 2016, when the ice shrunk faster in response to extreme air and ocean temperature spikes.</p>



<p>"The interannual variability of calving front retreat shows a strong sensitivity to both atmospheric and oceanic warming, with immediate responses to large air and ocean temperature anomalies in 2016 and 2019," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>The experts suggest that an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-ice-free-day-in-the-arctic-may-arrive-in-2027/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric feature</a> known as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/atmospheric-blocking" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blocking</a> contributed to these conditions. This weather pattern often stalls normal airflow and can lead to unusually high temperatures in certain parts of the Arctic.<br><br>This warming trend is not only driving glacier retreat but also influencing precipitation patterns, creating a cascade of changes throughout the Arctic environment. Precipitation trends in the Arctic, especially Svalbard, show a <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/341146545_Measured_and_Modeled_Historical_Precipitation_Trends_for_Svalbard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">substantial increase</a> over recent decades.</p>



<p>As extreme weather events increase, glacier melt will accelerate, threatening ecosystems and marine species. Cold-water habitats may disappear, disrupting food chains and forcing species to migrate. </p>



<p>Fish and other marine life rely on conditions with stable ice, and their survival is at risk as glaciers continue to retreat at increasing rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-calving-risks-with-glacier-retreat">Increased calving risks with glacier retreat</h2>



<p>Falling shards of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-are-reshaping-landscapes-and-national-borders-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> that plunge into the sea during calving events are more than just a spectacle for passing ships.</p>



<p>Calving plays a key role in how glaciers keep or lose mass. Slight changes in water and air conditions can tip the balance toward more ice breaking off than freezing in place. </p>



<p>Study co-author Professor Jonathan Bamber explained why current estimates for future sea-level rise still carry substantial uncertainties.</p>



<p>“Calving is a poorly modeled and understood process that plays a crucial role in the health of a glacier,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-for-the-arctic-environment">Consequences for the Arctic environment</h2>



<p>Melting glaciers release fresh water and sediment into surrounding seas, which affects ocean circulation and marine ecosystems. These influxes alter local conditions, making it harder for certain animals to survive in their usual breeding grounds. </p>



<p>Plankton communities also shift in response to changing salinity and nutrient levels. Locals who depend on fishing may find that their livelihoods become more difficult to sustain when familiar species migrate or diminish.</p>



<p>As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-melting-arctic-sea-ice-could-disrupt-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> retreats further, new shipping routes open up. While the additional routes potentially boost economic opportunities, they also also threaten marine ecosystems and fragile coastlines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-the-changes-ahead">Predicting the changes ahead</h2>



<p>Regional officials and research groups are keeping a close eye on Svalbard’s glaciers, while governments weigh updates to climate adaptation strategies. </p>



<p>Experts emphasize that reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains one of the most direct ways to slow changes. </p>



<p>Scientists and policymakers are discussing ways to slow <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/retreating-glaciers-unleash-a-world-of-ecological-potential/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glacier loss</a>, but retreat is inevitable as temperatures continue to rise. Protective measures, like improving monitoring stations, may help to predict changes more accurately.</p>



<p>These stations can provide better forecasts of atmospheric blocking events, which cause sudden temperature spikes and accelerate ice melt.</p>



<p>"With more frequent blocking occurring and continued regional warming, future calving front retreats will likely intensify, leading to more significant glacier mass loss," noted the researchers.</p>

New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
